Jantz plans to transfer; A.Leonard gets tryout

Sad news for the A-House household: quarterback Steele Jantz told the UH coaches he is planning to transfer.
Jantz, who is in his third semester at UH, was not expected to get much playing time at quarterback. He was told he would not be invited to training camp. Greg Alexander is the starter, and Brent Rausch and Shane Austin are the top backups. Bryant Moniz is on the 105-player roster for training camp.
This summer, freshmen Cayman Shutter, Corey Nielsen and David Graves join the mix.

Al you got to come out and celebrate with Rob…frank returns from the big sand box….

  25. al ™ May 1, 2009 12:51 am

at least two incoming qb’s will redshirt.
the one that doesn’t would be wasted if he doesn’t get any pt.
hopefully rausch and/or austin or moniz can step it up this year to compete for the 2010 starting assignment.

thus, giving the freshman time to develop physically, adapt to college, and to the system.

i heard we are already after another qb come the 2010 recruiting sessions, well, two actually.

  26. Hawaiianbod May 1, 2009 12:52 am

howzit al! yes, it has been awhile. pray all is well. let me know when the next cc is?

  27. Ralph May 1, 2009 12:53 am

Al not sure, but practice starts in August, first game is sept 5, and I believe the NCAA restricts the number of practices or hours per week the team can practice….was it 20 hours total per week and that’s why they have some 2 a day and others a single practice with meeting after that…

  28. al ™ May 1, 2009 12:54 am

    shoots hawaiian.
this coming tuesday, bulla has called one for the return of the beast.
    noon at camellia at mccully.
    come on down.

  29. Ralph May 1, 2009 12:55 am

ST is up, he’ll give us the schedule or at least tell us how many hours per week and the number of weeks the team will practice before kickoff

  30. Ralph May 1, 2009 1:02 am

two more qbs, that will be 8 qbs after alexander is out, too many qbs..convert some to slots like Bess and Grice Mullen were switched. and if a few qbs transfer our APR goes down hill….

  43. Garret May 1, 2009 4:44 am

    lakesidegt,

I hope that your family is okay. I wouldn’t have expected them to have to cancel sports in Huntsville due to the swine flu and have sports keep going in San Diego so close to the border.

  44. Garret May 1, 2009 4:45 am

Best wishes to Steele Jantz. The QB depth chart is *really* deep, which makes it hard for any walk on to earn playing time and a scholarship.

  45. Garret May 1, 2009 4:47 am

    Happy Birthday jm2375!

I hope that you are enjoying your restaurant gifts! Our whole family is signed up with restaurants and we always look forward to eating out near our birthdays. Luckily, the certificates we get are good for 2 weeks or a whole month, so we have time to hit the different places.

  46. Garret May 1, 2009 4:49 am

It is good that UH has a recruiting link to the College of San Mateo, because they sure have a lot of D-IA recruits each year!

What’s one barometer of success for a community college football program? For starters, the number of players it transfers to four-year universities. In that regard, you’d be hard-pressed to find teams with more success than CSM. The Bulldogs program is doing what it normally does in the offseason — moving players to the next level.

So far CSM has moved on 12 players, with more signings to come. Players who have signed include Daniel Porter (Kansas), Matt Taufoou (Iowa State), Jamie Fehoko (Ohio), David Hafoka (Hawaii), Tevita Halaholo (Idaho), Richard Wilson (James Madison), Warren Zeigler (UNLV), Dajon Green (Hofstra), Danny Keenan (Southern Oregon), Ernesto Lacayo (Hastings-Nebraska), Alec Williams (Valdosta State), Wes Price (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and Anthony Arrellanes (Chowan University-North Carolina).

CSM coach Bret Pollack expressed pride in being able to transfer around 20 athletes every year.

Bess went fishing for charity yesterday.

He and a number of teammates — Yeremiah Bell, Davone Bess, Kendall Langford, Channing Crowder, Paul Soliai, Jason Allen and Greg Camarillo — fished in the pond next to the store’s Islamorada Fish Company restaurant with kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County. The event was part of the 13th annual Miami Dolphins Fishing Tournament, which is June 6 out of Miami Beach and benefits the charities of the Miami Dolphins Foundation.

MAC schools sure lost a lot of money by going to Bowl games.

  49. Garret May 1, 2009 4:57 am

Ball State is the latest Mid-American Conference team to pay a deep price for participating in a bowl game. The school has reported a loss of $142,398.07 for its trip to the GMAC Bowl in Mobile.

Last week, MAC member Northern Illinois reported a loss of $154,125 for its trip to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport. Central Michigan, another conference member, dropped $67,227 on its trip to the Motor City Bowl in nearby Detroit.

Article about how this could be Pat Hill’s last year at Fresno State. I like the mention about their game in Hawaii this season.

Football coaches aren’t supposed to be building young men, or making sure they go to class, they’re supposed to be winning football games. And pretty much everyone agrees Hill hasn’t done enough of that the last four years. It’s why he’s down to the last two seasons on his contract, and a possible extension is on hold, awaiting further results.

This season is set up to be Hill’s last. Not that someone’s set it up. It just is. I’m not trying to be cynical. I hope it isn’t. And I’ve learned that making sports predictions is almost always a bad idea. Projected stars will underachieve. New stars will come from nowhere. Momentum carries a season in directions one never expects. But this really could be it. We don’t need to re-hash the entire thing, why this season will be so tough, the seven road games, the trip to Hawaii, the loaded Boise State team, the new offensive and defensive coordinator, the new quarterback, the inexperienced offensive line. OK, I guess we did re-hash it. It’s just hard to look at the schedule and see anything but a 1-3 start, and that’s followed by a game at Hawaii, where Fresno State never wins. And that would lead to a lot of empty seats at Bulldog Stadium in the last half of the season. Empty seats mean lack of money coming into the athletic department, and that, ultimately, is even more important than winning. It’s been a rumor thus far, but a donor might really come forward to help Fresno State buy out that last year of Hill’s contract.

  51. Garret May 1, 2009 5:03 am

Joe Paterno says that the Big 10 should take a team from the Big East so that they can expand to 12 teams and have a championship team. That might make sense, but will they still use the term “Big 10” then? The name Big 12 is already taken…

Penn State coach Joe Paterno said Thursday night that he has pushed within the Big Ten conference to expand it to 12 teams as a method of leveling the playing field in college football.

“We go into hiding for six weeks,” Paterno said, referring to the hiatus between the end of the Big Ten regular season and the BCS bowls. The other major FBS conferences play into the first weekend of December.

“Everybody else is playing playoffs on television,” Paterno said. “You never see a Big Ten team mentioned. So I think that’s a handicap.

“I’ve tried to talk to the Big Ten people about, ‘Let’s get a 12th team — Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt — we could have a little bit of a playoff.'”

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. You guys are the bestest. The thing about having a bday on Lei Day is that if you’re wearing a lei, nobody thinks twice about it. 🙂

Garret – already used one of the coupons. The 2 ice cream coupons are the ones with the short expiration dates. The restaurant ones usually give you a month.

May is a bad month for maintaining weight, between my bday, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, end of school (esp when I was working at UH), it’s constant eating. 😀

HA techies – please do something about those spams.

Off to work, with a stop for da keed to get her friend a bday present and get some tea/kope.

Waiting for coach Mack to announce the ‘cuts’ being made for the Tsaiko T-gate team.

Homey looks like our only garands starter, back for another season. Mrs. A-House gets real excited about his backfield in-motion moves. Hehehehe!

Calvin from Kona was our leading receiver going into camp, but after a bad case of the dropsies on every other catch, this observer thinks it’s time for him to move on to the Makule league where they will appreciate his ability to chug a beer and make the occasional catch.

Kazz showed promise out on the grill iron! He showcases his intensity and he proved that he is not just another ‘hot’ prospect. No doubt about it…he loves to hit people!

    Best wishes to Steele.

Although there will be a lot of QB’s in the queue next year, I don’t think you can pass on a solid prospect if he shows a desire to be a part of the Warrior family; and if he so desires, I would love to see Andrew Manley in the QB mix. I think he has that something…that toughness…that desire…he’s a winner. IMHO of course.

Too bad regarding Steele. I was hoping he’d do well here and eventually make it to the top of the heap. I wish him well wherever he goes. I’m sure he’ll be a welcome addition to the fans at whatever school he plays for.

Article about how Washington has 4 QBs and only 3 will make their team. I hope that Colt wins the #2 spot, as most #2 QBs get at least some time during the regular season. If Colt doesn’t beat out Collins, then he has to beat out Daniel…and the Washington coaching staff seems to like Daniel.

Skins quarterback coach Chris Meidt began regularly contacting Daniel at the scouting combine and Coach Jim Zorn has also contacted Daniel by phone. Meidt repeatedly praised Daniel’s passing and he will be one of four QBs in Skins’ camp. Daniel’s limited size, and the fact he operated in a spread offense that differs from most NFL systems worked against him in the draft, but he is a player the Skins were focusing on, according to sources.

New Orleans and Buffalo were also pursuing Daniel. With Jason Campbell, Todd Collins and Colt Brennan all under contract, the Skins have more passers than they will carry in the regular season. Brennan has earned high marks during his development and Zorn and executive VP Vinny Cerrato have repeatedly said Campbell will be the starter. Perhaps Brennan could unseat Collins for the backup role – the Skins considered signing free agent Byron Leftwich in that role a few weeks back. That would open up a space for Daniel; otherwise he would have to beat out Brennan, a 2008 draft pick, for the third QB spot.

The Skins gave Daniel a modest signing bonus as part of the deal, according to a league source.

better game tonight for the warrior bballer, show more enthusiasm, protect the hale, challenge them and kick some butt.

  73. Garret- Washington actually has 5 QBs flinging it during mini camp. They are looking at a LOT of WRs and a couple of TE’s so my hope is that the WCO will take hold soon. I hope Campbell gets it this year and I will not go hoarse on Sundays yelling THROW THE BALL at the TV in some sportsbar somewhere!

Otherwise, if it were “my” team, I would work Colt and Chase up the foodchain and give them a lot of reps and get that throwing game DOWN!

Congress is holding hearings today to discuss a college Football championship format. Folks on the hill aren’t happy with the Bull Crap System. Now that’s CHANGE we can BELIEVE in.

A poll on HLN indicates that 84% of all respondents prefer a playoff system instead of the BCS.

  78. NYUH May 1, 2009 8:33 am

WASHINGTON — The coordinator of the Bowl Championship Series told a House congressional committee Friday that a switch to a playoff would threaten the existence of celebrated bowl games, but skeptical lawmakers called college football’s system of choosing its top team unfair.

Totally agree we don’t need a playoff. Just get rid of the BCS trust!

  79. da princess' classmate May 1, 2009 8:38 am

tough nite at the ballyard last nite, kramer pitched another gem imho making a couple mistakes, a hanging breaker in the 4th for a single up the middle and what looked like an elavated fastball for a dinger. how one error can change the whole complexion of the game. the o at the Les remains dormant. turn it around tonite hopefully

  81. madeinhawaii May 1, 2009 8:49 am

The BCS system may be what keeps many of the mid-majors and independents from profitability. The question though, is if there will be as much money floating around without the BCS and would this money be more accessible to schools outside of the current BCS makeup? Maybe conferences should be split up with a $$ cap on the total athletic expenditure each conference can have as a group based on it’s membership? Any conference with Hawaii gets a 25% COLA exception, of course.

  82. Rob25 May 1, 2009 8:50 am

  83. Garret May 1, 2009 8:56 am

    Liz,

I don’t count the 5th QB for Washington as a serious contender to make their roster…

  84. Garret May 1, 2009 8:58 am

    madaeinhawaii,

I’ve posted my support for a students athletics fee many times and hope that something gets worked out soon. This should have been done a long time ago when economic conditions were better and UH Athletics started to lose money, but someone (*cough* HF *cough*) wasn’t pro-active. Adding a fee now is a harder sell to the students…

    madeinhawaii,

If we ended the BCS system and went back to the old system of bowl games, teams not in BCS conferences would make *less* money. The big $$$ comes from teams that get big TV ratings, which are the teams in the BCS conferences. Those conferences aren’t forcing Fox and ESPN to give them the big $$$.

Remember when BYU was in the WAC and won the national title? They didn’t play in one of the big bowl games, they played in the Holiday Bowl. Even though BYU was #1, their bowl payout was just a fraction of the big bowls, and even though they played a big name in Michigan, the TV ratings were much lower than the big bowl games.

Has Bryant Moniz been impressive during the spiring? Did he pass Steele on the depth chart?

Best of luck to Adam Leonard at Seattle’s mini-camp this weekend!

  89. Garret May 1, 2009 9:03 am

    J-Dog,

The reports I read seemed to indicate that Moniz was ahead of Steele. Considering that Moniz got a camp invite and Steele did not, their ranking with the coaches is clear.

  90. J-Dog May 1, 2009 9:03 am

Is it likely that one or two of the 3 freshman QB’s will greyshirt?

Garret thanks, I was wondering about that. I haven’t had a chance to get out to practices and from what I’ve read, seems Moniz has fit right in.

  92. Dirty Commish May 1, 2009 9:14 am

Dirty Commish wishes Steele all the best and is a little sad to see him go because he quite possibly had the coolest name on the roster. His official nickname practically writes itself.

But we do need to give reps to the top three. This Gruden-esque habit of stockpiling QBs is akin to throwing spaghetti at the wall and hope some of them stick.

  93. FloridaTed May 1, 2009 9:29 am

Good morning, Tsaiko-Town and its Buergermeister, the honorable Mr. Stephen Tsai.

May this be a day without calamities or other misfortune to anyone.

A most enjoyable birthday to jm2375.

    LizK,

Have you been able to figure out the Redskins brass, what they’re trying to do with Colt? Maybe I’m crazy, but I really have the feeling that if Jason will not inprove considerably, Colt might just get his chance. Should be interesting. I will see a lot more, if Colt can replace their Nr.2, would clear up some nice cap space to boot.

At first glance it might look like BigMack might have a QB quandery, but it’s all good. We have 3 outstanding freshmen coming in, so, unless one of them is so outstanding as to replace GA, redshirt all of them, with 5 year of training available, then Rausch or Santos for one year, by then, one or two of the freshmen are stars. Let the QB factory begin.

Man, that took awhile to write, lol.

Happy Birthday JM2375!!! I hope you get lei’d today and have a wonderful birthday dinner!

Did the blog change again?….or is it just my computer?….or is it just my eyes? The words are smaller and centered.

  96. madeinhawaii May 1, 2009 9:40 am

    G’day, Florida Ted.. Good Day!

Take your time. I still read and internalize slower than you can type so it’s all good.

I, too, think this might be Colt’s chance to move up. Jason hasn’t been given a contract renewal yet, and the longer they sit on it, the less likely that’s going to happen. UNLESS, they see him as a backup?

  97. madeinhawaii May 1, 2009 9:42 am

    Happy B-day Happy Birthday JM2375…

Words smaller? NAH… the ADs are just getting bigger.

  98. Garret May 1, 2009 9:46 am

I never would have imagined Michael Vick becoming a spokesman for PETA…but he and his advisors are trying all they can to get him back into the NFL.

Michael Vick is in talks to become the new spokesman for PETA.

Yes, you read that correctly. The disgraced one-time NFL superstar serving prison time for funding an illegal dog-fighting ring is primed to do public-service ads for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals upon his release later this month. According to three people with knowledge of the matter, the proposed endorsement is part of a comprehensive PR scheme aimed at rehabilitating the quarterback’s image and gaining him readmission to the league that banned him from playing.

That’s not all Mr. Vick will do to try to rehabilitate his image. People with knowledge of his comeback plan said it will also include mea culpa TV interviews, PSAs and charitable donations to other animal-rights organizations (or perhaps the formation of his own foundation), along with the possibility of working with PETA.

  99. ❗ “Best of luck to Adam Leonard at Seattle’s mini-camp this weekend!” ❗

FloridaTed- love seeing you here. Hoping for the best for Colt. I think this is his chance to move up to BU. One step at a time!

  100. Kazz May 1, 2009 9:54 am

That’s unfortunate for Warrior Football fans.

MAHALO STEELE FOR WHAT YOU HAVE CONTRIBUTED AND HAVING TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE CALL YOU “STEELE-BO” DURING THE FALL LAST SEASON.

While I didn’t really watch him closely, Jantz seems like a good physical specimen and I’m some other school would love to have his services.

However, I think this WON’T be the last time we’ll see a UH QB transfer out. I think we may hear about another one come the end of fall camp or at the latest by the off-season following the 2009 football year…. It’s a numbers game at a position in an offensive system that needs to have ONE solid guy for a good amount of time for the entire offense to be effective.

  101. Kazz May 1, 2009 9:59 am

Even though I never saw Steele Jantz have a rep with the 11-11’s, for some strange reason I thought that Moniz was a little behind Jantz.

I was only thinking this based on Jantz’s previous work with the scout team last season and Moniz just arriving to UH this spring.

Good for Moniz though! Only thing, CUT YOUR HAIR! BUMBAI NO CAN SEE YOUR NAME ON YOUR JERSEY!!!

  102. FloridaTed May 1, 2009 10:06 am

    Kazz,

You,re right, it seems Jantz didn’t want to play another position, too bad, he is a nice ‘kid’.

  114. kama krab May 1, 2009 10:41 am

The qb situation is getting very interesting and it looks like it will just get more interesting when the three freshman qb’s get into camp. My gut feeling says that one of the three will stay on the active roster, one will redshirt and one will grayshirt. I am thinking that they are bringing Moniz back as maybe a scout guy. That is as far as I see him going.

Just got news that Danny Gans (performer extraordinaire in Las Vegas)has passed away. Shocking news that has taken everyone by surprise…even Steve Wynn at whose casino/hotel Danny had just signed a 5-year contract to perform. Cause of death is still not determined. Saw his show, and he was a truly gifted performer.

I wonder how much longer Mouse Davis is/will be staying at Portland State, though I agree it would make for an easy(-ier) transition for him w/r/t learning the offensive schemes.

Speaking about PSU, this season might be the year they put everything together if they can maintain the path they’re going on. They were fairly competitive in most of their games, and actually went 4-1 at home last year (lone loss being to 1-AA/FCS powerhouse Montana).

    VENTING TIME!!!

Ok so Ferd Lewis reports that Utah State’s students voted to INCREASE their athletic fee to more than 240.00…

Let’s just take a look at the athletic track records of late for our respective spectator sports:

    Utah State… basketball = check, football = nope, softball = nope, women’s volleyball = nope, baseball = nada …

    UH… basketball = um… we’ll see, football = check, softball = check, women’s volleyball = CHECK, baseball = we have it.

What is wrong with this picture here? I suspect the ASUH “skewing” the results of their “poll”. Seriously, how was the issue presented in the poll? What were the response options given? Just a “yes” or “no”? Was there a “don’t really care” option? To me a “don’t really care” option works in favor of a “yes” vote.

I’m sorry but it’s time to impose the fee and stop this non-sense. Yes some students, if not, most may not be interested in UH athletics at the present time, but at the same token A LOT of students don’t have access to that shuttle bus/trolley thing the ASUH was in favor of which requires a fee to operate…

Something smells pilau at Manoa concerning this.

To JD, Chancellor Hinshaw, and Dr. McClain, enough already. You’ve been patient enough. JUST DO IT!

    Hello sir!

With Shutter, Nielsen, and Graves coming in I suspect one will eventually transfer, and two may stay. Based on their high school resumes they all have the potental to start somewhere. Only one can play here.

Also I think Bryant Moniz is a sophomore.

  122. Kazz May 1, 2009 11:35 am

    Happy birthday to Jm2375!!!

  123. A-House May 1, 2009 11:48 am

    Kazz:

Maybe, perhaps, maybe, The Bus would be willing to “donate” the cost of the buses/drivers only for the “home” games and deduct this amount on their taxes as a donation to UH. This transportation mode will only be available only to UH and Community College students with a valid ID card. Bus route will be UH-Manoa campus to Aloha Stadiium and back.

If it becomes very successful, maybe other locations on the Leeward, Windward, and Mililani areas can be added.

I do not know the cost of “renting” a bus nor wage for each driver, but this may be a way of The Bus supporting the Warriors.

It would be no different than the company who provided the TVs and furniture to the Coache’s office.

  144. SteveM May 1, 2009 1:41 pm

Just received this newsletter from my favorite on-line cruise travel agency…

A swine flu outbreak is dominating the news. The headlines are changing hourly but at the time of this writing it has been confirmed that this new strain of swine flu originated in Mexico and that Americans traveling in Mexico have returned to the U.S. infected with swine flu.

The U.S. Department of State has issued the following Travel Alert:

“The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens of the health risks of travel to Mexico at this time due to an outbreak of H1N1 “swine flu.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an April 27 notice recommending that American citizens avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico at this time. CDC’s notice also suggests precautions that travelers and U.S. citizen residents in Mexico can take to reduce their risk of infection while in Mexico. CDC provides recommendations for those who must travel to an area that has reported cases of swine flu, and recommends measures to take following return from an area that has reported cases of swine flu. The complete CDC notice can be found at the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/. Please check this site frequently for updates…”

As a result of this advisory and in an abundance of caution, major cruise lines that we represent have stopped calling on ports in Mexico and have developed–or are developing–positions with regard to future calls at ports in Mexico, while the outbreak lasts. We have been waiting for these official statements and I wanted to get them to you as quickly as they were available–hence the second newsletter this week. To see these cruise line announcements now, please click http://www.vacationstogo.com/swine_flu.cfm.

If you are booked on a cruise that is scheduled to visit Mexico, you may want to check these statements on a regular basis. We will update this page every weekday with any new policies or changes…

These itinerary changes disrupt the vacation plans of guests, cost the cruise lines money and deal a harsh blow to anyone in Mexico who relies on tourists for their livelihood. Indeed, there are no winners in the swine flu outbreak, but canceling port calls in Mexico was absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of every passenger and crewmember and to combat the spread of the influenza.

I applaud the cruise lines for taking prompt and decisive action.

I wonder how my 11-day Mexico cruise might be affected on the day after the UNLV game. 🙁 Maybe there’ll be an itinerary change and we go in the opposite direction…interesting. This could be an adventure. 😉

Again, Mrs. A-House and Midori, we’re sorry for your loss of Steele.
But many of our male bloggers — the Bunz of Steele — have agreed to pose shirtless if it will help fill the void.

Here’s an idea for the BaseBows game tonight ~ Since it’s Lei Day, go get one (or make one) green lei to wear to the game. I just bought a few from a lei maker at Kapi’olani Paka today. Too bad Aunty can’t sell them on campus in front of the stadium. Would be a winnah for the day.

Good luck to the Bows tonight!

    For immediate press release
    05/01/2009

In honor of the future president of the Philippines, his fight will be shown for free at Hans L’Orange Park on a big screen aka the world’s largest blue tarp.

Since there are no seats at the park, please feel free to squat at your leisure.

With each order of pork guisantes or adobo, you get one balot pour pree.

BTW, had a nice interview with Brian Viloria on Leahey and Leahey this morning. Speaking of which, I never understood why the folks at my church aren’t into Viloria. They are all crazy over Pacquiao, and it’s rubbed off on me.

  203. Garret May 1, 2009 7:22 pm

    Feature article on David Veikune.

Veikune’s mom, the former Sheila Kerr, was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio State. Most of her siblings still live within a mile of each other in Canton and he has “about 30, 40, maybe 50 cousins” living there, too.

“They were so excited, they called me that day and I’ve been keeping in contact with them,” said Veikune on the first day of rookie camp Friday. “It’s a dream come true. It’s not only a blessing to play for the Browns but to reunite with my family.”

Veikune, the Browns’ 52nd overall pick out of the University of Hawaii — the second-rounder acquired in the Jets trade — has never been to Ohio, but many of his relatives have visited him over the years.

“I haven’t seen a lot of them since sixth grade,” he said. “But they’re huge Browns fans. They’re all going to come to a game.”

  204. Garret May 1, 2009 7:23 pm

Veikune seems to have done well in the practices.

“This was my first day ever playing linebacker, so it was a new experience but a lot of fun,” said Veikune (6-2, 257). “I have a lot to learn. It will be hard, because the plays are a lot harder and the tempo is a lot faster. But the coaches are great and I’ve learned a lot really quickly.”

Mangini was impressed with what he saw from Veikune in the first two practices.

“He’s fluid for someone his size and for someone who’s had limited exposure to standing up,” said Mangini. “In the bag drills, he went through more like a linebacker than a defensive end.” Mangini may have reached a little for Veikune in the second-round — some experts pegged him for the third- or fourth- round — but was sold on his tenacity.

“I love the guy’s motor,” said Mangini. “This guy’s got toughness, aggressiveness and a smoothness to the way that he changes directions and run games. I think he could play both outside and inside for us moving forward.”

  205. Garret May 1, 2009 7:23 pm

Mac was quoted in the article!

“The Browns were very smart in taking David where they did,” said McMackin. “They did more homework on him than some of the other teams and [pick] No. 52 is not a reach for him. I have no doubt he’ll be fine at that position. We played some 3-4 in passing situations and for the past two years he’s dropped back a lot. I know [coach Mangini] will do a great job teaching him the techniques.”

McMackin echoed what Mangini saw on film.

“He’s tenacious, smart, physical and his motor runs every play,” said McMackin. “Our defensive ends were more like outside linebackers — speed-rushers — with their hands on the ground. That’s what he is. He’s got the inner desire to get to the quarterback and he goes full speed every play.”

  206. Garret May 1, 2009 7:26 pm

Article on Samson…though the quality of Bleacher Report articles is often suspect (several redshirt seasons?), I still enjoyed reading it.

When it was time to go to college there was no doubt in which school he would go to—the University of Hawaii.

After redshirting his first couple of seasons, Satele’s college career took off as a junior and a senior—when he served as the team’s captain. He also earned first-team ALL-WAC both years, and lead the No. 1 offense in the nation as a senior (559.21 YPG).

Satele came out in 2007, the same year as Jarmarcus Russell, Zack Miller, Mario Henderson, Johnny Lee Higgins, Micheal Bush, and Oren Oneal. If anything, this could be a major upgrade over Jake Grove.

Samson Satele will be a perfect fit in Oakland, he will be healthy and ready to go. I look forward to having him on our offensive line.

The Titans told Ryan Mouton to take it easy in minicamp today.

The Titans gave an order to one of their third-round draft choices: Take it easy on the hamstring.

Hawaii cornerback Ryan Mouton, who initially injured his hamstring at the NFL combine in February, was limited during Friday afternoon’s rookie minicamp practice at Baptist Sports Park.

Mouton tested his leg in individual drills, running with no visible issues. Later, though, he watched as the rest of the defensive backs faced receivers in passing drills.

Mouton is “probably a couple weeks away” from being healthy, Coach Jeff Fisher said.

The Dolphins’ stadium may soon be named after a beer. I like the headline of the article (“Strange brew?”)…it reminds me of a Tsaiko.

Dolphin Stadium, which has not had a corporate name since 2005, likely will complete a naming rights deal with Landshark Lager, a beer brewed by Anheuser-Busch, the stadium’s president said Friday morning.

The stadium could be renamed Landshark Stadium, though Dolphin Stadium president Bruce Schulze would not confirm the exact likely new name.

The Akron Beacon Journal has a feature article on David Veikune.

“She went to high school in Canton,” Veikune said before a Browns minicamp practice. “What high school? I’m not sure.”

Sheila (Kerr) Veikune is a 1975 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas.

“I was excited about going to the Browns,” David Veikune said. “I still have a lot of family around Canton … all my cousins … Mark, Claudia …

“They’re all so excited the Browns picked me. I haven’t seen ’em since I was in sixth grade, a lot of them. Some, I haven’t seen since I was a baby.”

“It’s a blessing to play for the Browns and to reunite with my family,” he said.

Sheila Kerr moved to Alaska after graduating from Ohio State. There she met Oma Veikune, a body-builder whose titles include former Mr. Alaska. David was born in Anchorage.

“I remember Alaska, even though I was just a kid,” Veikune said. “I remember it never getting dark because of the northern lights.

“Mom is a pharmacist, and to get promoted we had to move around quite a bit. We were in New Mexico and Arizona and finally Hawaii. Hawaii’s our last stop.”

  225. Garret May 1, 2009 8:35 pm

I like what Cleveland’s GM says about Veikune.

GM GEORGE KOKINIS SAYS “Big-time motor. He finishes, he runs to the football, and he can get to the quarterback. That size, that versatility, that motor … we went after it. He’s a smart kid we could probably use in a lot of positions.”

  226. Garret May 1, 2009 8:37 pm

Oops, that last article was from the Canton Repository, this article is from the Akron Beacon Journal.

Outside linebacker David Veikune, the Browns’ second-round pick, lived in Alaska, New Mexico, Arizona and Hawaii growing up and attended the University of Hawaii. But his mother, Shelia Kerr, was born in Canton, and he has five or six relatives there. ”They’re so excited. I haven’t seen them since sixth grade,” he said. ”It’s a dream come true. It’s not only a blessing to play for the Browns, but also to reunite with my family.”

  227. Yay hooray for the Veikune ohana!!!

  229. COLT WATCH!
“As most of you know, I’m not much of a Colt Brennan guy but I have to say that I was impressed during seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills. He fired a few intermediate passes over the middle with great accuracy and authority and showed good touch on deep passes. I’m not ready to anoint him as a future star or anything but after today I’ll be a lot less surprised if it does happen.”

Then the wheels fall off the Bows in the top of the 9th…

Gotta split this series vs LaTech to save face at home! 👿

  232. Ralph May 1, 2009 9:31 pm

our young pitchers have been suspect in the last few series…good pitching with timely clutch hitting helped the bows earlier in the season. now with the pitching struggling and several of the outfielders and DH not hitting we become an average team. hope they rejuvenate and start peaking again for the WAC tournament..

Browns coach Eric Mangini discussed David Veikune:

(On his impressions of David Veikune) – “I’ve been really happy with what I’ve seen. He is fluid for someone his size, for someone who has limited exposure to standing up. In the morning we do the bag drill where they run through the bags; you guys have probably seen it over time. His ability to do those different, it’s a range of exercises so it could be shuffling through sideways, up and back, it’s all the different movements that you have in football. He went through that in a way more similar to a linebacker then a converted defensive end.”

How are you doing on the Ea(s)tside of the hill?

  254. djmitcho May 2, 2009 6:00 am

    wafan,
nice yesterday, supposed to be awesome today….over 70 and sunny. I find it funny that tomorrow its supposed to be below 60 and rainy and its the annual Bloomsday run here in Spokane.

  255. wafan May 2, 2009 6:26 am

    dj . . .

If we get up to the mid-50’s today it will be a good day. And, if it does not rain it will be a great one!

One would think the Bloomsday participants would welcome the cooler weather.

  256. wafan May 2, 2009 6:29 am

    Dang. A slow-motion conversation.

    HA!

  257. addahknowjoe May 2, 2009 6:32 am

  258. wafan May 2, 2009 6:36 am

    A-Joe . . .

How are you and the homeland this fine morning?

  259. djmitcho May 2, 2009 6:49 am

    ajoe, aloha to you too.

    wafan,
you’d think that the the cold weather would affect the kenyan runners, but they still seem to win the race every year.

  260. d1島 May 2, 2009 6:52 am

    Great Morning All!

  261. Kekoa May 2, 2009 6:54 am

Aaahhh!…The Morning Sunshine of another great Hawaiian day! Gooood morning all!

Lots of softball to be played today at UH. Last chance for the Seniors to strut their stuff. They should be playing in front of a huge home crowd and yes…I’ll bet Ariel will be there to collect her smooches!

  262. Kekoa May 2, 2009 7:09 am

Our Washingtonian Tsaikos are looking at some mixed weather forecasts for today, but it’s that Kona wind on the way that will bring you the Aloha!

  263. djmitcho May 2, 2009 7:22 am
