It appears that, by mutual decision, middle blocker Shane Welch and the volleyball Warriors have agreed to part ways.

Welch missed the first half of the 2012 season with a knee injury. He then was part of the rotation at middle. But he did not play in the final four matches because of a sprained ankle.

It was fitting that the Nagatani Academic Center was the pre-ceremony gathering site for UH’s graduating student-athletes yesterday.

It also is fitting that the expansion of the Nagatani Center will be part of a $4.5 million renovation project that will begin next month.

Forgot to mention that graduate assistant coach Inoke Funaki earned a master’s degree in public administration yesterday. Congratulations. Next step: Dr. Funaki?

Eduardo Saverin joins a growing number of people giving up US citizenship, a move that can trim their tax liabilities in that country. He is like a lot of people, frightened and worried about the Taxmageddon that’s on the horizon the beginning of next year.

On January 1st, the Bush tax cuts expire and a number of other stuff happens. Health care implements and taxes go up. Charitable deductions practically go away

He hasn’t lived in the U.S. for quite awhile.

    Kevin:

Saw Clapp and Donovan this morning. They said the team will stay on the mainland until it is decided where it will play in the Regionals.

    From Jason Kaneshiro’s story today:

The Wahine are scheduled to depart New Mexico this morning and, barring delays, should be somewhere over the Pacific on their way back from Los Angeles when the NCAA softball selection show airs on ESPNU today at 4 p.m.

    ——-

“We may have been there before (Friday), but I have no idea after (Friday),” Coolen said.

“If we do touch down and they say we’re coming back to the mainland, that’s a lot of planning.”

Either Coolen doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going, JD and CC don’t know what’s going on with a team that they are responsible for, or, all of you are welcome to fill in the blank about what was said yesterday.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Best wishes to Bob Coolen and to the Women Softball Team (Na Wahine).

I thought the problem was that if the WSB stayed on the Mainland waiting the call, (1) there would be a problem that a lot of the seniors would temporarily jump ship visiting friends and family – not that I blame them – but it would be hard to practice as a team; (2) that a lot of them would prefer to be back here in Hawaii to wait the call as the roadtrip was a long one.

In any event, the Na Wahine deserves our applause for a great season!

I AM NOT A TAX EXPERT.

But it is my understanding that if you renounce your citizenship and move to a foreign country, you are still wacked for five years by IRC 877A for income and property in the US.

And if X is working in a foreign country and is working or collecting from a US company, he gets wacked by the US and that foreign country (assuming it has an income tax).

I would have to assume Eduardo Saverin has worked this out with his tax accountant/lawyer.

I wonder – the Eduardo Saverin Aloha Stadium?, the Eduardo Saverin University of Hawaii football team? – just a thought!

  59. Garret May 13, 2012 10:02 am

Congratulations to Abe! Congratulations also to all of the UH graduates!

  60. Garret May 13, 2012 10:06 am

I agreed with Kevin’s post yesterday that it doesn’t make sense to send the softball team back to Hawaii and then back again to the mainland right away. Waste of their time, a really draining trek to go through, something that really doesn’t take care of the student-athlete.

I cannot imagine the softball team not making the tournament, and they already know they aren’t likely hosting the first round.

  61. innocent observer May 13, 2012 10:13 am

the men’s volleyball situation does not look good for next year, might spell the end for charlie. he got a lot of recruits last year, but the were all marginal players, and the new three do not appear to be any better. none of the players are great servers or hard hitting outsides (need heat). men’s volleyball is a power game, you need power in those areas.

  62. βρεω808 May 13, 2012 10:14 am

A-House/Stretch Stadium would be surrounded by three golf courses and no parking. All the concession stands would be set up for “marketing”. 🙄 😀 😆

  63. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 10:15 am

MVB – I like and support Coach Wade and the MVB Team – but….

realistically (pessimistically?), I don’t see much, if any, future for the sport. 🙁 😥 🙁

  67. Garret May 13, 2012 10:21 am

    Tommui,

I’m sorry that I didn’t get back to you sooner, but my family left for Legoland right after my last post yesterday. We spent the day with the family that has the twin boy who passed away from brain cancer…the family is still recovering emotionally, but outings like this are nice for them.

Any comments on the BSU and SDSU possible bugging out of the Big East?

Boise State needs a place for their Olympic sports. For them, everything hinges on the TV deal that the Big East will get. If the Big East doesn’t get a big TV deal for football, the economics don’t work our for them. Given money, they can buy their way into a conference (like how UH bought its way into the Big West with travel subsidies) or they can be forced to be content with a lower level conference.

My personal opinion (which is likely wrong at least in part) is that the Big East will get enough TV money to keep Boise State. I also feel that Boise State isn’t looking at the Big East as a long-term solution, they are just looking to get extra money to build their facilities up so that they will be in a good spot when realignment happens again in the future. UH gets the State of Hawaii to build their facilities, but Boise State’s Athletic Department pays for all of their facility upgrades and the Big East is how they plan to finance it.

San Diego State *has* a perfect spot for its Olympic sports. If you notice, the rumors are more about Boise State than SDSU because of this. San Diego State needs the money from the Big East’s TV deal to help with the budget cuts that are coming due to the $16 bil deficit that the state has–$7 bil more than expected a few months ago due to reduced tax revenue in April. SDSU will also have significantly lower travel expenses in the Big West…I don’t see how they could afford *not* to join the Big East.

Any comments on BYU still on its independence stance?

To put things in perspective, BYU gets as much from TV as an ACC school does, nearly equal to the ENTIRE MWC. BYU wants the Big 12 on its terms, but the Big 12 may have better options. BYU is having some trouble scheduling games now, so I don’t know how feasible their indy stance is.

  68. Garret May 13, 2012 10:25 am

Here is one of the articles about the Florida State/Big 12 news that popped up. This is *not* just a rumor, Florida State’s board of trustees is pushing for it and they have a lot of support within Florida State’s Athletic Department. Florida State was falling behind Florida, in part because of the $6 mil less per year in TV money Florida State was getting from the ACC…but now the difference between the SEC and ACC will be more than $10 mil.

So here’s Florida State, which acknowledged this spring it is running an operating deficit and may have to trim up to $2.4 million a year in expenditures. It’s saddled with what it considers a less-than-desirable football schedule as it tries to lure 80,000-plus all the way to the Panhandle. The addition of Syracuse and Pitt to the league slate won’t help that problem in the least. And it’s literally surrounded by cash-rich SEC clubs.

Across the ACC, the television deal was seen as anywhere from a disappointment to a disaster, sources said.

In Tallahassee, it may have been the last straw.

  69. A-House May 13, 2012 10:25 am

A beautiful and happy mother’s day to all the Moms in the world.

For Mrs A-House, every day is “mother’s day”.

  70. βρεω808 May 13, 2012 10:26 am

IMHO – $16 gigabucks is only the current number. I expect that to grow unless the economy ramps up quickly and the tax revenues rebound. CA is in bad shape. 😥

  71. Garret May 13, 2012 10:29 am

If the Big 12 takes Florida State and Miami, the ACC and the Big 12 would each have 12 schools. If they decide to just stay like that, maybe realignment would be over for a decade…the TV contracts could finally get to the point where adding schools would result in *less* money for the big conferences, which would make things stable.

For UH’s sake, I’d like for things to be stable for awhile. UH isn’t an attractive realignment candidate right now, but when Coach Chow gets the Warriors on a roll then UH will be in a better position.

Everybody keeps speculating that the Big 10, Big 12, or ACC will take Big East schools…but the Big 10 will only get more money if Notre Dame joins them and the Big 12 and ACC might both be locked into TV contracts soon, so if there is nowhere to go the Big East will stabilize also.

  72. Garret May 13, 2012 10:31 am

    Brew808,

The current deficit includes *zero* dollars projected from IPOs such as Facebook’s upcoming IPO. California gets huge tax windfalls when big IPOs happen, so that could help balance out the over-optimistic projections that the head-in-sand Legislature and Governor made.

  73. whitey May 13, 2012 10:33 am

i don’t know what the current roster for mvb is, but in 2011-12 they had 22 players, 10 fr, 5 soph, 3 jr, and 4 sr. they lose 4 + 1, but have a very good nucleus coming back. am trusting Coach Wade on this one and wish him and the team well for the upcoming new season.

  77. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 10:47 am

    I don’t worry about men’s volleyball.

It’s all about repetition. Players always get better. Marks was too predictable a hitter last year. But so was Josh Walker as a freshman. Marks will learn. Timmer will be better. Davis Holt will step up. He reminds me of Maulia La Barre. I think Hartley and Sedore are going to be good. But, yes, it’s a must-win time for the program.

  78. βρεω808 May 13, 2012 10:48 am

I am a little worried they are replacing a 6′ 10 middle with someone 6′ 4. He will get eaten alive in the MPSF blocking wise. Holt doesnt impress during pregames hitting wise at all. Is the new setter/opp recruit Max going to get a shot at setting??

I’ve stopped watching men’s volleyball and women’s basketball. To painful to watch. The results seem to be so predictable lately, a loss. And that’s too bad. On those subjects, I haven’t heard anything about any new recruits that Coach Beeman got. Regarding m. volleyball, I’m not impressed with the talent level. Certainly, no Katz or Umlauft type player. You can just see the stands for these sports, there isn’t that much interest. I can see w. basketball losing money, but in better times the m. volleyball program was profitable. Time for a new coach? Possibly. The person I’d really like to see come back as a head coach is Mike Sealy, either after Shoji retires or as m. volleyball head coach. You could tell early on that he was excellent. Oh, I long for the day for another Nani Cockett type player, or Judy Moseley, or a Costas Theoharidis. There has to be a type of player that brings the people to define a program such as Colt Brennan for football, Kanani Danielson for women’s volleyball, Kolton Wong for baseball, or Kelly Majam/Iwata for softball. Possibly, Manroop Clair will be that person for men’s basketball. I hate to put pressure on him as he’s only 17, but he seems to have the type of game that can bring people out to Stan Sheriff. Any player who lights up a McDonalds’s All Amercian gets me excited. In other words, the “Holy Grail” material! UH recruit Quinton Torres-Costa from Waiakea seems to be one of those special players and I hope he doesn’t go in the MLB draft and comes to UH. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there.

  101. jm2375 May 13, 2012 1:44 pm

Awwww, gee, thanks, ST for ruining a perfectly good Mother’s Day with the bad news. j/k Shane was one of my favorite players. This auntie is gonna miss him.

Good luck Shane, wherever you end up.

    GO WAHINE!

  102. madeinhawaii May 13, 2012 2:01 pm

So which starter(s) from the past season are/is still with the men’s Volleyball team?

  103. Kekoa May 13, 2012 2:06 pm

Congrats to Abe for making the Academic team as well. He’s got one, possibly 2 years of eligibilty left if he gets the medical wavier. Meanwhile, he’s trying to get in to grad school.

He will be a force to reckon with on the offense line when we meet USC in the opener!

  104. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 2:32 pm

    I guess MIH doesn’t follow men’s volleyball.

  105. Ralph May 13, 2012 3:36 pm

softball selection on now on ESPNU, 4 p.m.

  106. Ralph May 13, 2012 3:37 pm

16 regionals, 64 softball teams….oh no, Michelle Smith on the tube

  107. Mac May 13, 2012 3:50 pm

No Hawaii yet. But they are not at Cal or Washington. Looks like it will be AZ, ASU, or UCLA.

  108. Ralph May 13, 2012 4:08 pm

so far, so good, we are not in the same bracket as Cal, Alabama and Arizona State

  109. Slugger May 13, 2012 4:17 pm

    Congrats to Inoke & Abe!

Best of luck to Shane Welch. Saw Stephen Hunt in the SSC sitting with Kanani. Loved the student who did the undergraduate ‘speech’ performing her slam poetry. So cool!

  110. Slugger May 13, 2012 4:18 pm

    What’s the word, Ralph?

  111. el burro sabio May 13, 2012 4:19 pm

    Whew!

  112. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 4:22 pm

Great matchup. Big hitting, good pitching.

And since UH stayed in Las Cruces today, it’s a Southwest Airline flight away.

  113. el burro sabio May 13, 2012 4:25 pm

ST, that’s a quick trigger on the delete button!

  114. Ralph May 13, 2012 4:25 pm

We got Arizona, Norte Dame and North Dakota State in Tucson, we win out, we play the Oklahoma regional winner in the super…a chance for the Ricketts to get together and play some softball.

  115. el burro sabio May 13, 2012 4:29 pm

Aw, no direct Southwest flights from El Paso to Tucson. Might be simpler to take a bus.

  116. el burro sabio May 13, 2012 4:31 pm

Or fly to Phoenix and bus it to Tucson

  117. Slugger May 13, 2012 4:32 pm

Think we ought to collect on some of the Dollars for Dingers & Kokua for K’s pledges to use in the post-season? (What’s our total so far?)

Dang! If I weren’t working, I’d fly to Phoenix and drive down to Tucson for the Regionals. I have friends to stay with in Tucson… Good luck, Na Wahine!

  118. Ralph May 13, 2012 4:43 pm

dollars for dingers and kokua for k’s is cumulative for the entire season, includes all post season play. got to be patient.

  119. Ralph May 13, 2012 4:45 pm

major road connecting Las Cruces and Tucson, but open country with a lot of smugglers and illegals looking for a ride.

  120. Ralph May 13, 2012 4:48 pm

easy drive from So Cal to Tucson for our So Cal families.

  121. HiFlyer May 13, 2012 4:53 pm

  124. madeinhawaii May 13, 2012 5:12 pm

Right… I haven’t followed men’s volleyball seriously since the Wiltons. Just a casual parlance in that direction. Same with Women’s BB… I watch a little now and then. I’m hoping Beeman can get me hooked again.

  125. el burro sabio May 13, 2012 5:23 pm

    HiFlyer,

8-10 hours on a moped, 4-5 hours on a more conventional vehicle.

  126. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 5:34 pm

    MIH:

Didn’t mean it as a criticism.

With the football coaching change, I didn’t have as much time as I hoped to spend on men’s volleyball. It will be different this coming year. By the time the season opens, you’ll know everything about the team.

  127. HiFlyer May 13, 2012 5:35 pm

    el burro sabio

    thats the sightseeing spped.

  128. kapakahi May 13, 2012 5:42 pm

Definitely premature but IF the girls can somehow get through this weekend’s Arizona Regional, it’ll probably set up for an All-Ricketts showdown in Oklahoma with Stephanie against younger sis Keilani.

will be taking the bus…Time for the gals to catch zome zzzzzz’s…

  131. Ipu Man May 13, 2012 6:25 pm

So…is it single elimination or got chance if lose first game?

  132. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 6:27 pm

    It’s double-eliminiation, I believe.

  133. krump1_AKA_protector May 13, 2012 6:28 pm

Good luck to the Wahine and Rainbow teams; (s)he who laughs last

    laughs best!!

  134. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 6:31 pm

It’s about a half-hour drive from Las Cruces to El Paso. It’s about 317 miles between El Paso and Tucson. It’s about 255 miles between Las Cruces and Tucson. Tough call. But it probably would be easier to make the 4-hour drive than to drive to El Paso and fly to Phoenix, then drive to Tucson.

  135. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2012 6:32 pm

But, hey, these aren’t those Hawaii excursion buses.

They’re air-conditioned, and have overhead DVD players.

  136. Ipu Man May 13, 2012 6:34 pm

Tucson is the 2nd largest city in Arizona. Home to the U of AZ, with

37,000 students and 900,000 plus people, lots of senior citizens…

and 60 miles North of Mexico. Hope Coolen watches what they eat…

I’m not too disappointed that the Wahine lost at the WAC tournament. I think all along the goal was to try to win the college world series. The Wahine was a shoo in to make the regionals, the question is where? Arizona isn’t a bad regional and it’s do-able. Losing now isn’t a bad thing, because going undefeated is a long shot. In softball, pitching is the name of the game. Ricketts and Parnaby have been consistent and the last 2 ball games are not indicative of their performance for the year. Pitching and timely hitting will make the difference.

    BHF2,

Try the link again. It worked for me. Pretty interesting article tho, however it seems although Chow has an extensive resume, the writer seems apprehensive in giving his full confidence on Chow changing the program.

Thanks WNY, always good to have someone on the East coast to do the research for us so that peeps in Hawaii and the West coast have something to read without spending too much time searching online.

Anywho, everyone have a great Monday (ugh!)!
