With the exception of libel or promoting the overthrow of government, a columnist can write whatever he wishes. Every newspaper in the country has a columnist.
Whether you love the column he wrote or use it as a Charmin, ย he has a right to express his opinion. His opinions are his opinions.
With the exception of slander or promoting the overthrow of government, a head coach can close practices, not participate in post-practice interviews, and ban players and assistants from speaking with the media. That happens across ย the country.
Whether you love that a coach would make a stand against perceived unfair reporting or think he needs to see a dermatologist for thin skin, he has a right to create his own media policy for practices. His policies are his policies.

ST- you are right. The question is whether the coach’s policies (and behavior) are in the best interests of the program. He is, after all, a state employee.

I don’t know if the policies are in the best interest of the program. I do know yesterday was not in the best interest of me. Dave is our columnist. He can write whatever he wants. But tomorrow he could be writing about the Pro Bowl or BYUH or Natalie Iwamoto’s departure from HHSAA. Tomorrow I’ll be writing about football. And the next day, too. And the day after that.

Aloha kฤkou, I think the current issue before us, is not about the protected freedoms and latitudes that are inherent to their respective positions, but rather, more about the adult quality of discernment.
A person long ago impressed on me that as we all grow older, whether it be in our family, our job or the community at large, we must recognize and utilize the power that comes from our individual experiences and positions. But, moreover, the usage of that power is a discernible reflection of our own character, and whether we use both moderation and charity in its’ application.
My long winded point? You can both have a malama or rightful position, (e.g. a journalist has the ability to write on this or that, or a coach can manage his inner circle…)however, it is more important, how you exercise that right or autonomy, and what are your intentions/objectives with said right.
Well I just read Dave Reardon’s column and it makes me sick to my stomach. Dave is an A** in my book. Sorry, but that’s my opinion of his work and attitude. Mighty the sword is not when it is used like this. Sad for our program. Sad for our school. Sad for our state.

I thought Ikaika Woolsey and Taylor Graham did very well.
There was one broken play where Woolsey rolled out and inadvertently got knocked to ground. He popped back up, and was ready to go again. That’s Woolsey. He’s got some ruggedness.
It was surprising that Graham was out there. The talk was that they would ease him in. But he threw well. There was a time when he was stretching out his (surgically repaired) left shoulder. But after that, he was throwing well.
And Beau Reilly was watching practice. Tall dude. He’s really eager to learn.

Absolutely true. I was critical of Chow’s reaction because it seemed like he was shooting himself (and the program) in the foot. And someone at UH thought the same, as evidenced by the damage control apology. But that doesn’t mean that I support DR’s journalism style. Does he fancy himself as the TJ Simers (LA Times page 2 columnist who gets off on targeting certain coaches, players, and owners) of Hawaii? Regardless, Chow shouldn’t have taken the bait. Would have been nice to have other players give interviews for the media.

as a coach, if after 2 or more seasons of off-season sessions and games, if a player shows very little or no improvement, do you terminate his scholarship by telling him that his playing time will be severely limited or none at all and let the player decide to transfer?
keeping in mind that ALL scholarships are annually renewable, yet it appears that it is taken for granted that it will be automatically renewed

Sure miss the fun spring practices with June Jones and Jerry Glanville. That was fun, interesting and positive reading. What was the name of Jerry’s blocking bag? This negative situation was started by the HC. Now he has more work to do to turn this thing around. We need positive transparency through more open communication. Open your mind!
So, its not really clear, but is Chow going to put the kibosh on any further interviews during and after practice?
In my opinion, that would be a mistake.
Not to worry folks, there will be football stories the next 24 days.
In tomorrow’s paper, Jason Kaneshiro will have a good story on the freshmen offensive linemen.
By the way, Tui Unga is going to be quite a player, based on yesterday’s practice.
And Beau Yap, who was used as an outside linebacker, looked really good there. It almost reminded me of the ’92’s team’s double-eagle formation.

Be what it may, Coach Chow shows me that he has the backs of his team and staff and has shown that both team and staff is like his family and will not, I repeat, will NOT, tolerate anyone or anybody criticizing his players or staff and that only gives the players and his staff more motivation to do what they have to do to be the best on the field of play and not worry about outside criticism because they know the coach is there to protect and support them. Just like your own family, I am sure, you would react the same way if someone criticized a member of your family which, I know, I definitely would and so would Chow and with that in mind, Coach Chow has my support and will I continue to defend him against outside criticism. Building a program takes time and patience esp. what is demanded of the program and many of you naysayers that are looking for positive results just be patient…i know its not easy but you can’t be an arm chair q.b. but you have to be out there, win or lose, to support the team because that exemplify big time fans just like when Michigan lost to that Div. 11 team many years ago and has a miserable season but the fans continued to support the team with sellouts …Hawaii fans can be fickle and I applaud those fans that are out there in the stadium, win or lose, to support the team. Nothing more and nothing less.
Power of the pen is mighty. Unfortunately, what is written stays written. Is DR’s job on the line?
I once heard that the Samurai warrior never kills his opponent in anger. Some think this means the Samurai is without emotion. I think not. I think it indicates that the Samurai is a highly developed human being. Their crude anger has been refined into pure and focused strength. There is no need for hacking and whaling and chopping at your opponent. One elegant slice of the sword and the opponents head is off. And you can be respectful of your fallen adversary. As dead as he is.
Of course most of us will never have the development of a Samurai. And most people struggle to manage their anger in mature ways. Yet (in my opinion) the example of the Samurai is something to aspire to. Especially in sports where uncontained anger and aggression produces more in the way of bone head penalties than outstanding plays. The anger and aggression needs to be concentrated and refined into clear and focused strength and then it is sublime.
Both coach Chow and DR fell short in this area. Then it leads to the expected set of embarrassments and apologies and guilt and the like. What is needed here is refinement. As for DR his style of writing opinion pieces feels more like judgmentalism than outstanding journalism at times. But it is easy for me simply not to read him or take him seriously when he heads in that direction. Sometimes his articles are good and reach a higher standard. But I don’t care too much about what DR does or doesn’t do.
As for coach Chow it is more important to me that he himself learns how to be a more refined warrior. He sets the tone and example for his team. I don’t say this judgmentally. We all need to keep refining ourselves. But these young men on this team need leadership. How do you stand tall in front of your adversary and defeat him with the strength and skill and the dignity of a Samurai warrior.
Learn yourself coach and then teach and lead these young men!

Should be an interesting meeting between Coach Chow and Dave today. I hope there are others sitting in with them to keep things in order. After today’s write up I wouldn’t think anything will be mended, only that some lines in the turf war will be drawn.

I wrote yesterday and repeat today (getting to be like some other bloggers, but I digress): Never getting into a p*ssing match with a newspaper reporter – you know you will lose.
I once went to a party where I knew I was not invited nor welcomed. Wonder why the hostess was so upset? Of course the hostess could have faked graciousness or have a hissy fit – either way!
This incident has many fans wondering if Norm Chow is spending his time worrying about Dave Reardon or a winning season. My advice is to spend 100% of your time on the team.

You should probably add “college” in front of the coaches, even though we know what you are talking about. In the professional leagues, they require the coaches and the players to talk to the media.

There must be more to the drama between Reardon and Norm. I re-read the article the Reardon wrote on Clune and it wasn’t foul.
His main point was that he never heard of Clune before and he hopes one of the assistants we pick up played for the Green and White.

is doing.He has dealt with reporters before.
We all know Reardons style and talentless writings.
Last year he fires the OC on the first day of practice. This year he picks a fight with an established columnist. It is clear that he is desperate to assert his control after back to back LOSING seasons. In both situations the athletes and athletic department suffer. Could he not have let the OC go before the first day? Could he not have worked out the perceived problems with Reardon before yesterday and in a less confrontational manner? Is the S.A. being negatively affected by Reardons behavior? I do not think so…perhaps even the opposite. Is U.H. served well by the actions of their highest paid coach? Ben Jay better be paying very close attention to this matter. I think the future of UH football is in serious jeopardy!
I think it might be a good idea to have a mediator during the one-on-one with Reardon and Chow. Hopefully, both can put an end to the animosity.
After looking at all of the stuff, I get a picture akin to the Kona Bill fish tournament.
DR baited the hook and got the fish (NC) to chase. Maybe he could not get him before but figured that he may be able to snag him in shallow waters. So he goes where he may never have fished before, the practice field. And “Bang” he hooks up and lands the big one (Front page story).
So there hangs (NC) like the landed fish who took the hook, and the happy angler (DR) proudly smiling as he has landed the one he’s been after.
Winner DR, loser, NC. He took the bait and got hooked and is now the trophy.
Too bad in this situation there is a winner and a loser.
A sad commentary to securing a story, but hey, the fish did not have to go after the baited hook.
I guess if I were Chow…I too would have had a hard time holding my tongue when it comes to Dave Reardon. Especially if he basically called for my firing in his blog.

Hmm…..this present day flap about DR and Norm chow is not exactly new. I recall a time when the SB reporter Bill Kwon wrote something critical about the BB team. Next time Kwon showed up at the UofH athletic office Riley screamed at him. In essence telling him he was not welcome. Kwon just replied “I’m here to do my job.” So I certainly understand the the feelings and views of both coach and columnist. Anyone out there want to suggest a televised program like MEET THE PRESS? I would think Leahy and Leahy could do it.

Dave Reardon might have just written the most perfect spot on article today on the reality of UH football and what Norm Chow should be focused on….. Every HC has to deal with good media coverage during the ups, and bad during the down. What exactly does Norm Chow think should be written about Hawaii football following a 1 win season? I mean, not everyone can sell ice to an eskimo. Some guys just need to be dead honest. And that is what Reardon is. I commend him for it.

I too love that defensive line-up. Loaded with studs. Beau Yap is gonna create mayhem at OLB. Love the idea of seeing him coming in off the edge with a QB in his bullseye.
I love UH football as much or more than anyone on these blogs…. But Norm Chow is just a HC. No bigger than the program. His job is to win games and put seats in the stadium…. If his job was to make sure every kid graduates, gets good grades, become good human beings, he would get paid 150k. But football is a business. It comes with high rewards and big risks. If Norm Chow isn’t succeeding at what he was hired to do, which is coach football at a high level, articles not in his favor will come about. Same way it does when Lane Kiffin isn’t winning at USC. Same thing when Mack Brown isn’t winning championships at Texas. These coaches aren’t getting paid to teach kids life lessons…

Who does Chow think he is? I heard Nick Saban lays down the law with the media at Alabama. Say anything negative there and your banned forever. Of course he can do that after winning a few National Championships. Chow on the other hand well, need I say more? Chow needs to earn that right to wield the power and banish a reporter for rubbing his program the wrong way. Don’t blame an article for hurting the program. Look in the mirror, that’s what’s hurting the program!

The quality of the writing may be judged on the imagery it creates in the reader’s mind. I think the image created by the apt usage of the word “boogerish” will be indelibly imprinted on my mind. DR’s words have already been forgotten, replaced forever by ST’s literary artistry.

Chow is a dead man walking. Biggest mistake in UH athletic history was not firing him and hiring Dino Babers. UH will pay for that mistake for years.
The Advertiser jumped the shark today, posting Dave’s fanboy rant column on the front page.
My annoyance with Reardon’s column has little to do with Chow’s meltdown but more of disappointment that a salaried sports columnist for Oahu’s only daily would resort to cheap retorts like pointing out Chow’s W/L record and harping a ‘instead of selling the program you helping us sell papers with your lack of composure’ <- paraphrasing of course. I guess I expected I more a rational, composed, response – after all Chow already overplayed his hand by going on tilt so a counterpoint of reason would allow Reardon to keep foot on the high road. Instead, he stooped even lower and looks just as foolish in the process.
Also, if any SA editors are reading this can you get Dave to cut out his lazy and frequent use of fictitious quotes EG — "A friend said it best at the time …." Who was the friend? and if you can't name anyone specifically then find a way to incorporate that POV from your own narrative. Journalism 101. sheesh.

Isn’t chow just being hawaiian style? If someone was talking stink to your family and came around a party, you would ask them to leave. And if they didn’t you would angrily force them to leave. If people think there’s something wrong with that then they shouldn’t advocate for a coach raised in Hawaii.

I read the Kevin Clune article written by Dave Reardon, In my opinion, it was pathetic.
I find it hard to understand how a person can form an “opinion” of another person, without ever, and I mean ever, meeting them or talking to them before forming said opinion.
Oh, and it’s not the first time Reardon showed his real colors, I clearly remember his harsh words toward Al Noga’s induction into the UH Circle of Honor.
Luckily, I spoke to a few people today, and it is their knowledge that Reardon already was sent the message he wasn’t welcomed, and he still, basically to throw it in everyone’s face, showed up anyway.
That tells a lot of what I need to know about a man’s character.
To me, he knows damn well what he was doing. And that’s pushing buttons.
Pretty simple from where I come from, be a chicken-sh*t person, and well, be treated like chicken sh*t.
Columnists and their “Power of the Pen”, I can respect a man’s opinion, I can respect writings that make us all think a little bit, but, only if it comes from a first-person account. Opinions based on second, third, even fourth party information, to me, horse sh*t.
And when a columnist resorts to bullsh*t e-mails, or “sources”, or hides behind “my friend told me”, or uses idiots on Facebook as source material.
Don’t even get me started.

Now he’s all high and mighty, almost relishing it all over Facebook, bragging about doing two radio shows and a TV interview, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t a journalist, and I’m assuming that’s what a columnist is, well, isn’t one supposed to cover the story and not be the story?

And no, I am not sucking up to Norm Chow. Fact is he should be criticized a bit, and fact is he should be thick-skinned enough to acceot it, deal with it. let us not forget, UH football team was 1-11 in 20-13, 4-20 in two seasons under Chow.

ba-Zing, Baber was the right coach at the right time and they blew it.
Reardon didn’t setup Norm Chow. Chow set himself up. A guy who is almost 70 years old must take responsibility for his actions.
Spring Practice should be about things positive. We were all disappointed at last season’s won – loss record. We all need something positive to look forward to.
There will be plenty of time for negativity when the losses come in the Fall.
For now, we are still undefeated and can’t lose any games for the next 4-5 months.
Keep it positive and give the Team and the Coaches a chance and show our Support.
OK, back from reading the paper. Got the answer to the question I asked yesterday about if Reardon was informed he was persona non grata before the incident.

Agreed. Dave Reardon got the confrontation he wanted. Coach didn’t disrupt practice, Dave knowingly did.
And Dave then has the gall to say in his column, “Is that really the message youโre trying to convey to your team? A spiteful attitude that results in a negative?”

I’m also repeating myself, but for the last time on this point. I don’t speak for Chow and I absolutely don’t agree with his actions yesterday. He was stupid. BUT, this statement from Reardon’s January column is disgusting:

If Dave was in the wrong then why no one for the SA come out and apologized for his actions but instead it was Chow and the BJ came out and apologized, HMMMMMM.
Most of us folks that have been around a bit, know that whether it was a teacher, coach, or boss, the relationships in which we extract much professional and/or personal growth, are sometimes, not free swinging and easy. They place demands on our previous experience and skill sets. What is common to these experiences, is these people have a consistent interest in our lives, and provide the resources and energies for us to involve to the next level. Hmmmn, something like a good coach does for his players…

Your absolutely right ST, but I have a problem with Dave’s column in today’s SA. I think Coach Chow could have handled it better. We know he wears his emotions on his sleeve and he let it get to him personally. But what Dave as a columnist knows and used it to his advantage is that he can hide behind the First Admendment right to free speech and say whatever he wants but Coach Chow can’t as an employee and a representative of UH. This matter is better handled behind close doors Dave. You say it doesn’t make Chow or UH look good but you could add yourself as well.

I thought hiring Chow was a mistake from the start. I thought his approach to the game was not suited to Hawaii. I hoped he proved me wrong. So far, he has NOT proved me wrong. I like DR and others, are disgusted with the past two years.
But now, I am pulling for Chow to succeed. He is a top notch offensive mind. There were some green shoots last season. Chow seems to be putting in a lot of effort, as evidenced by the players he has recruited. There seems to be incremental improvement in the coaching staff.
The problem with his approach is that it takes time, and then, it still might not be enough with the disadvantages inherent with UH football. I see he is trying to build a solid foundation for the program. But again, this takes time. Unfortunately, most people want a winner and now. Never mind the bad consequences later.
June Jones and the run and shoot is an example. Yes, you can get quick results. But it will only take you so far. Yes, we went to the Sugar Bowl. But only to get exposed by being blown out and embarrassed. So we must choose. Go fast and limit your upside, or be patient and build something with a stronger foundation that will last longer and hopefully, reap bigger rewards.
Pete Carroll is the antithesis of Chow. One is energetic and enthusiastic, the other is stoic and placid.
The HC sets the tone for the program and is the face of the program. It is as much a selling job, as it is Xs and Os. You must sell the players, the coaches, and the fans, on your direction and skill to do the job. Communication is critical.
What happened yesterday is not good. Chow did not handle himself as he should, period.
Reardon asked me for some dirt on Clune and I didn’t have any so I just told him that Clune was a drug addicted serial pedophile, but Reardon said he couldn’t use that.
So I told him instead that Clune disliked reggae, hated going to the beach, and ate potatoes with every meal. And Reardon said, “Perfect’.
Anyone have the link to this Reardon on Clune article? I am curious to see how offensive it is… If all he said was the hire is a red flag then lets get real…. it’s just an opinion … I think any Chow hire can be considered a “red flag” after TK, Tommy Lee, Tuioti, Rauscher, and Price couldn’t cut it. Before the hiring of Gouveia, this team hardly has any Hawaii ties so I don’t see it as a problem if someone thinks there is an issue with having a staff made up of majority mainland guys.
Several years ago, I heard a UH quarterback was suspended.
I called the head coach, who didn’t return messages.
So I called the player, who confirmed he was suspended.
The quarterback then called the head coach โ to cut a deal, I suppose โ and the coach “suspended” me. I’d ask him a question, he’d stare blankly, and then Ferd would ask the question and I would record the coach’s answer. Then everyone got together, the “suspension” was lifted, mostly because UH acknowledge it had no authority to suspend me.
When I became the UH men’s volleyball beat writer in 2001, Mike Wilton summoned me into his office. He said we’d get along well as long as I gave him a chance to respond to any controversial story. I agreed, and we had a great relationship. I broke stories about suspensions, fights transfers and the loss of a national title. He never objected because I gave him a chance to comment.
We all can get along.

I respect his position, but being a former UH HC and in the WAC, why not give UH and the WAC a much needed boost?

After the incident at University of Hawaii football practice Tuesday morning, I was asked by UH sports media relations director Derek Inouchi if I’d be willing to meet with coach Norm Chow to “clear the air.”
I agreed, and we met this morning for about 40-45 minutes in Inouchi’s office. We shook hands, we talked story and we shook hands again and went on with our days.
It was an amicable meeting. Most of what we discussed will remain among the three of us, at least for now, but the most important thing is that we all agreed to communicate better and to move forward.
I will be welcome at open practices, and I will be allowed to interview coach Chow and players, as other media members will, of course.
I submit this at around 1:30 p.m. About an hour ago, I learned that Chow has agreed to be a radio guest on the Sports Animal Show this afternoon, a show which I happen to be guest co-hosting, with Chris Hart, on KKEA 1420-AM. Chow is scheduled to join us at 3:35 p.m.
