It is what it is

With the exception of libel or promoting the overthrow of government, a columnist can write whatever he wishes. Every newspaper in the country has a columnist.

Whether you love the column he wrote or use it as a Charmin, ย he has a right to express his opinion. His opinions are his opinions.

With the exception of slander or promoting the overthrow of government, a head coach can close practices, not participate in post-practice interviews, and ban players and assistants from speaking with the media. That happens across ย the country.

Whether you love that a coach would make a stand against perceived unfair reporting or think he needs to see a dermatologist for thin skin, he has a right to create his own media policy for practices. His policies are his policies.

It is what it is.

ST, the question I have is was Dave Reardon asked not to be there prior to practice and he showed up anyway?

  9. JustAsking April 2, 2014 7:35 am

ST- you are right. The question is whether the coach’s policies (and behavior) are in the best interests of the program. He is, after all, a state employee.

  10. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 7:41 am

    JustAsking:
I don’t know if the policies are in the best interest of the program. I do know yesterday was not in the best interest of me. Dave is our columnist. He can write whatever he wants. But tomorrow he could be writing about the Pro Bowl or BYUH or Natalie Iwamoto’s departure from HHSAA. Tomorrow I’ll be writing about football. And the next day, too. And the day after that.

  11. cocobean April 2, 2014 7:44 am

The burning question unanswered from yesterday…..how did the QBs look?

  12. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 7:48 am

I had several pages of observations on my notepad, and 3-minute interviews with Julian Gener and Kevin Clune. You just take what you have and write your ass off.

  13. boolakanaka April 2, 2014 7:50 am

Aloha kฤkou, I think the current issue before us, is not about the protected freedoms and latitudes that are inherent to their respective positions, but rather, more about the adult quality of discernment.

A person long ago impressed on me that as we all grow older, whether it be in our family, our job or the community at large, we must recognize and utilize the power that comes from our individual experiences and positions. But, moreover, the usage of that power is a discernible reflection of our own character, and whether we use both moderation and charity in its’ application.

My long winded point? You can both have a malama or rightful position, (e.g. a journalist has the ability to write on this or that, or a coach can manage his inner circle…)however, it is more important, how you exercise that right or autonomy, and what are your intentions/objectives with said right.

  14. haka April 2, 2014 7:51 am

Well I just read Dave Reardon’s column and it makes me sick to my stomach. Dave is an A** in my book. Sorry, but that’s my opinion of his work and attitude. Mighty the sword is not when it is used like this. Sad for our program. Sad for our school. Sad for our state.

  15. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 7:51 am

    Cocobean:
I thought Ikaika Woolsey and Taylor Graham did very well.
There was one broken play where Woolsey rolled out and inadvertently got knocked to ground. He popped back up, and was ready to go again. That’s Woolsey. He’s got some ruggedness.
It was surprising that Graham was out there. The talk was that they would ease him in. But he threw well. There was a time when he was stretching out his (surgically repaired) left shoulder. But after that, he was throwing well.
And Beau Reilly was watching practice. Tall dude. He’s really eager to learn.

    Boola:
There was going to be a loud encounter no matter what. It could have been any of the 15 practices. It just so happened to be yesterday.
    It was an uncomfortable moment.
i felt badly for both parties … until I realized, oh, s–t, I only have several pages of observations on my notepad and 3-minute interviews with Julian Gener and Kevin Clune. It’s hard to prepare two meals with a can of tuna.

  19. JustAsking April 2, 2014 7:57 am

Absolutely true. I was critical of Chow’s reaction because it seemed like he was shooting himself (and the program) in the foot. And someone at UH thought the same, as evidenced by the damage control apology. But that doesn’t mean that I support DR’s journalism style. Does he fancy himself as the TJ Simers (LA Times page 2 columnist who gets off on targeting certain coaches, players, and owners) of Hawaii? Regardless, Chow shouldn’t have taken the bait. Would have been nice to have other players give interviews for the media.

  20. Haleakala April 2, 2014 7:57 am

    ST:
Thanks for writing about UH Warriors football!
I find your observations about the players more interesting than the personality clashes by the grownups.

  21. A-House April 2, 2014 7:58 am

as a coach, if after 2 or more seasons of off-season sessions and games, if a player shows very little or no improvement, do you terminate his scholarship by telling him that his playing time will be severely limited or none at all and let the player decide to transfer?

keeping in mind that ALL scholarships are annually renewable, yet it appears that it is taken for granted that it will be automatically renewed

now, does this sound like a business or what!

Mr. Jay, this is Tom Apple. Just wanted you to know that the UH BOR said to run the UHAD as a “business” and you get NO financially assistance from me. Happy trails to you!

Sure miss the fun spring practices with June Jones and Jerry Glanville. That was fun, interesting and positive reading. What was the name of Jerry’s blocking bag? This negative situation was started by the HC. Now he has more work to do to turn this thing around. We need positive transparency through more open communication. Open your mind!

  25. Shoko April 2, 2014 8:02 am

So, its not really clear, but is Chow going to put the kibosh on any further interviews during and after practice?

In my opinion, that would be a mistake.

  26. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 8:03 am

Not to worry folks, there will be football stories the next 24 days.
In tomorrow’s paper, Jason Kaneshiro will have a good story on the freshmen offensive linemen.

  27. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 8:04 am

By the way, Tui Unga is going to be quite a player, based on yesterday’s practice.

  28. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 8:05 am

And Beau Yap, who was used as an outside linebacker, looked really good there. It almost reminded me of the ’92’s team’s double-eagle formation.

Be what it may, Coach Chow shows me that he has the backs of his team and staff and has shown that both team and staff is like his family and will not, I repeat, will NOT, tolerate anyone or anybody criticizing his players or staff and that only gives the players and his staff more motivation to do what they have to do to be the best on the field of play and not worry about outside criticism because they know the coach is there to protect and support them. Just like your own family, I am sure, you would react the same way if someone criticized a member of your family which, I know, I definitely would and so would Chow and with that in mind, Coach Chow has my support and will I continue to defend him against outside criticism. Building a program takes time and patience esp. what is demanded of the program and many of you naysayers that are looking for positive results just be patient…i know its not easy but you can’t be an arm chair q.b. but you have to be out there, win or lose, to support the team because that exemplify big time fans just like when Michigan lost to that Div. 11 team many years ago and has a miserable season but the fans continued to support the team with sellouts …Hawaii fans can be fickle and I applaud those fans that are out there in the stadium, win or lose, to support the team. Nothing more and nothing less.

  34. papajoe2 April 2, 2014 8:19 am

Power of the pen is mighty. Unfortunately, what is written stays written. Is DR’s job on the line?

  35. Tired April 2, 2014 8:35 am

I once heard that the Samurai warrior never kills his opponent in anger. Some think this means the Samurai is without emotion. I think not. I think it indicates that the Samurai is a highly developed human being. Their crude anger has been refined into pure and focused strength. There is no need for hacking and whaling and chopping at your opponent. One elegant slice of the sword and the opponents head is off. And you can be respectful of your fallen adversary. As dead as he is.

Of course most of us will never have the development of a Samurai. And most people struggle to manage their anger in mature ways. Yet (in my opinion) the example of the Samurai is something to aspire to. Especially in sports where uncontained anger and aggression produces more in the way of bone head penalties than outstanding plays. The anger and aggression needs to be concentrated and refined into clear and focused strength and then it is sublime.

Both coach Chow and DR fell short in this area. Then it leads to the expected set of embarrassments and apologies and guilt and the like. What is needed here is refinement. As for DR his style of writing opinion pieces feels more like judgmentalism than outstanding journalism at times. But it is easy for me simply not to read him or take him seriously when he heads in that direction. Sometimes his articles are good and reach a higher standard. But I don’t care too much about what DR does or doesn’t do.

As for coach Chow it is more important to me that he himself learns how to be a more refined warrior. He sets the tone and example for his team. I don’t say this judgmentally. We all need to keep refining ourselves. But these young men on this team need leadership. How do you stand tall in front of your adversary and defeat him with the strength and skill and the dignity of a Samurai warrior.

Learn yourself coach and then teach and lead these young men!

Should be an interesting meeting between Coach Chow and Dave today. I hope there are others sitting in with them to keep things in order. After today’s write up I wouldn’t think anything will be mended, only that some lines in the turf war will be drawn.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

I wrote yesterday and repeat today (getting to be like some other bloggers, but I digress): Never getting into a p*ssing match with a newspaper reporter – you know you will lose.

I once went to a party where I knew I was not invited nor welcomed. Wonder why the hostess was so upset? Of course the hostess could have faked graciousness or have a hissy fit – either way!

  39. Rite80 April 2, 2014 8:38 am

This incident has many fans wondering if Norm Chow is spending his time worrying about Dave Reardon or a winning season. My advice is to spend 100% of your time on the team.

  40. NotNasti April 2, 2014 8:41 am

    29. ST: That’s a pretty studly lineup.

  41. rage777 April 2, 2014 8:43 am

You should probably add “college” in front of the coaches, even though we know what you are talking about. In the professional leagues, they require the coaches and the players to talk to the media.

  42. andbacktoreality April 2, 2014 8:45 am

um….who cares. Other teams have private practices. Why is Hawaii such a bunch of crying old men. He has a year to make things happen. Who cares who goes to spring practice.

ST is the only media source that reports positives. The rest blow donkeys.

  43. boolakanaka April 2, 2014 8:45 am

ST and Ipu Man, I think its actually boogeresque.

  44. jm2375 April 2, 2014 8:48 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

I’m gonna leave all the cr$p to the parties involved and just enjoy Spring Practice.

Despite its size, remember that Honolulu still has a “small-town” feel to it, i.e., NEVER BURN YOUR BRIDGES unless you’re never coming back.

Busy weekend of sports ahead – baseball, softball, and, of course, VOLLEYBALL!!

Last homestand of the season for volleyball, against BYWho. Come and honor the seniors on Saturday night. I understand Stretch has something special planned for the kittycats on Friday night. ๐Ÿ˜†

I expect all you Oahu fans to be at one or more of the venues on Lower Campus this weekend.

There must be more to the drama between Reardon and Norm. I re-read the article the Reardon wrote on Clune and it wasn’t foul.

His main point was that he never heard of Clune before and he hopes one of the assistants we pick up played for the Green and White.

  46. mo808 April 2, 2014 8:57 am

    Good Morning, folks!
    Go Warrior Bows!

  47. Rodney April 2, 2014 8:57 am

Norm Chow has been at the highest level of football
Coached at top college programs. He knows what he
is doing. He has dealt with reporters before.
We all know Reardons style and talentless writings.

  48. football=concussions April 2, 2014 9:07 am

Last year he fires the OC on the first day of practice. This year he picks a fight with an established columnist. It is clear that he is desperate to assert his control after back to back LOSING seasons. In both situations the athletes and athletic department suffer. Could he not have let the OC go before the first day? Could he not have worked out the perceived problems with Reardon before yesterday and in a less confrontational manner? Is the S.A. being negatively affected by Reardons behavior? I do not think so…perhaps even the opposite. Is U.H. served well by the actions of their highest paid coach? Ben Jay better be paying very close attention to this matter. I think the future of UH football is in serious jeopardy!

  49. Shoko April 2, 2014 9:11 am

I think it might be a good idea to have a mediator during the one-on-one with Reardon and Chow. Hopefully, both can put an end to the animosity.

  50. Buffoman April 2, 2014 9:13 am

After looking at all of the stuff, I get a picture akin to the Kona Bill fish tournament.

DR baited the hook and got the fish (NC) to chase. Maybe he could not get him before but figured that he may be able to snag him in shallow waters. So he goes where he may never have fished before, the practice field. And “Bang” he hooks up and lands the big one (Front page story).

So there hangs (NC) like the landed fish who took the hook, and the happy angler (DR) proudly smiling as he has landed the one he’s been after.

Winner DR, loser, NC. He took the bait and got hooked and is now the trophy.

Too bad in this situation there is a winner and a loser.

A sad commentary to securing a story, but hey, the fish did not have to go after the baited hook.

  51. HanabataBoy April 2, 2014 9:21 am

I guess if I were Chow…I too would have had a hard time holding my tongue when it comes to Dave Reardon. Especially if he basically called for my firing in his blog.

‘2. That whoever is hired as new defensive coordinator is capable of becoming at least interim head coach if necessary. If Hawaii starts out 1-5 or 0-6 in 2014 the head coach should be replaced at midseason.’

    http://quickreads.staradvertiserblogs.com/2014/01/01/a-few-local-sports-thoughts-for-2014/

    Ummmmmm…okay.

And he already took to twitter to look for public support!!! Lol funny. Just squash it already…

  52. andbacktoreality April 2, 2014 9:22 am

Rearden couldnt get a job doing a newsletter in the north texas cowboy chamber

  53. Leahi2 April 2, 2014 9:23 am

Hmm…..this present day flap about DR and Norm chow is not exactly new. I recall a time when the SB reporter Bill Kwon wrote something critical about the BB team. Next time Kwon showed up at the UofH athletic office Riley screamed at him. In essence telling him he was not welcome. Kwon just replied “I’m here to do my job.” So I certainly understand the the feelings and views of both coach and columnist. Anyone out there want to suggest a televised program like MEET THE PRESS? I would think Leahy and Leahy could do it.

Reardon = never played or coached a down. Some say the pen is mightier than the sword, if you bring a pen to the Gridiron you may change your tune.

  56. jeezy33 April 2, 2014 9:34 am

Dave Reardon might have just written the most perfect spot on article today on the reality of UH football and what Norm Chow should be focused on….. Every HC has to deal with good media coverage during the ups, and bad during the down. What exactly does Norm Chow think should be written about Hawaii football following a 1 win season? I mean, not everyone can sell ice to an eskimo. Some guys just need to be dead honest. And that is what Reardon is. I commend him for it.

  57. Ipu Man April 2, 2014 9:36 am

  58. jeezy33 April 2, 2014 9:36 am

  59. Kapaa Warrior April 2, 2014 9:38 am

Coach Chow fell into Reardon’s trap! I guess he had to address it, weather he did it in a good or bad way was up to him? Let’s move on and get this team better!

As for Dave Reardon……..well……I choose not to read his pointless scratch!

    GO BOWS !

  60. A-House April 2, 2014 9:38 am

    #45:

maybe Chow did not like the comment about a coach staff who never played for Hawaii rather than comments about Klune

  61. jeezy33 April 2, 2014 9:41 am

    59. Basically, you only read what you want to hear…. I suppose someone can publish a article calling Hawaii the best 1 win team in the country.

  62. jeezy33 April 2, 2014 9:43 am

60.. Lets be honest… Chow is upset about the article when Dave called out fans to do something about it if they want Chow firing him… I don’t care what he says, I highly doubt a article about Clune that wasn’t even negative is what really stirred up the pot… The tension between the 2 go a lot further back than the Clune hiring..

    Whew!

Can’t we all just get along?

I too love that defensive line-up. Loaded with studs. Beau Yap is gonna create mayhem at OLB. Love the idea of seeing him coming in off the edge with a QB in his bullseye.

  65. jeezy33 April 2, 2014 9:47 am

I love UH football as much or more than anyone on these blogs…. But Norm Chow is just a HC. No bigger than the program. His job is to win games and put seats in the stadium…. If his job was to make sure every kid graduates, gets good grades, become good human beings, he would get paid 150k. But football is a business. It comes with high rewards and big risks. If Norm Chow isn’t succeeding at what he was hired to do, which is coach football at a high level, articles not in his favor will come about. Same way it does when Lane Kiffin isn’t winning at USC. Same thing when Mack Brown isn’t winning championships at Texas. These coaches aren’t getting paid to teach kids life lessons…

Just F’n win and everyone will take care of itself..

  66. Da Punchbowl Kid April 2, 2014 9:49 am

Good morning Kifi! I just happen to have half a can of cream of boogerish in the fridge. I’m thinking turkey sausage, poi english muffins smothered in cream of boggerish for brekky.

  67. My take April 2, 2014 9:52 am

Who does Chow think he is? I heard Nick Saban lays down the law with the media at Alabama. Say anything negative there and your banned forever. Of course he can do that after winning a few National Championships. Chow on the other hand well, need I say more? Chow needs to earn that right to wield the power and banish a reporter for rubbing his program the wrong way. Don’t blame an article for hurting the program. Look in the mirror, that’s what’s hurting the program!

  68. Danzdaman April 2, 2014 9:59 am

I donโ€™t know about anyone else but if someone publicly implies that I should lose my job Iโ€™d take major offense to it. That being said, it is very easy to bring a person down when things arenโ€™t going their way. Whatโ€™s that saying, โ€œsometimes itโ€™s better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thingโ€. Word of the Day: picayune: adjective โ€“ of little value; paltry; also petty, small-minded

  69. Shoko April 2, 2014 10:04 am

If you don’t have anything nice to say (face-to-face) do it behind their back or write a column.

  70. Inyoface April 2, 2014 10:05 am

  71. sofaking_blk April 2, 2014 10:11 am

  72. Warrior Dave April 2, 2014 10:18 am

Very well stated ST. As a casual fan, rabid supporter, detractors of football and for people who don’t know who Chow is or if UH plays football, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

I just had to say that before reading and stating my own opinion.

  78. nutmegger April 2, 2014 10:36 am

The quality of the writing may be judged on the imagery it creates in the reader’s mind. I think the image created by the apt usage of the word “boogerish” will be indelibly imprinted on my mind. DR’s words have already been forgotten, replaced forever by ST’s literary artistry.

  79. sofaking_blk April 2, 2014 10:38 am

A HC on a losing team, picking fights with the media is a sure sign that the end is near

  80. NotNasti April 2, 2014 10:54 am

If the end is near, would you go down fighting? Or would you just give up?

  81. Hodad April 2, 2014 10:58 am

Chow is a dead man walking. Biggest mistake in UH athletic history was not firing him and hiring Dino Babers. UH will pay for that mistake for years.

  82. Sherri-baby April 2, 2014 11:10 am

The Advertiser jumped the shark today, posting Dave’s fanboy rant column on the front page.

My annoyance with Reardon’s column has little to do with Chow’s meltdown but more of disappointment that a salaried sports columnist for Oahu’s only daily would resort to cheap retorts like pointing out Chow’s W/L record and harping a ‘instead of selling the program you helping us sell papers with your lack of composure’ <- paraphrasing of course. I guess I expected I more a rational, composed, response – after all Chow already overplayed his hand by going on tilt so a counterpoint of reason would allow Reardon to keep foot on the high road. Instead, he stooped even lower and looks just as foolish in the process.

Also, if any SA editors are reading this can you get Dave to cut out his lazy and frequent use of fictitious quotes EG — "A friend said it best at the time …." Who was the friend? and if you can't name anyone specifically then find a way to incorporate that POV from your own narrative. Journalism 101. sheesh.

  85. Naks8 April 2, 2014 11:18 am

Isn’t chow just being hawaiian style? If someone was talking stink to your family and came around a party, you would ask them to leave. And if they didn’t you would angrily force them to leave. If people think there’s something wrong with that then they shouldn’t advocate for a coach raised in Hawaii.

  86. All Nuha Already April 2, 2014 11:19 am

    Please allow me to repeat:

I read the Kevin Clune article written by Dave Reardon, In my opinion, it was pathetic.
I find it hard to understand how a person can form an “opinion” of another person, without ever, and I mean ever, meeting them or talking to them before forming said opinion.
Oh, and it’s not the first time Reardon showed his real colors, I clearly remember his harsh words toward Al Noga’s induction into the UH Circle of Honor.
Luckily, I spoke to a few people today, and it is their knowledge that Reardon already was sent the message he wasn’t welcomed, and he still, basically to throw it in everyone’s face, showed up anyway.
That tells a lot of what I need to know about a man’s character.
To me, he knows damn well what he was doing. And that’s pushing buttons.
Pretty simple from where I come from, be a chicken-sh*t person, and well, be treated like chicken sh*t.
Columnists and their “Power of the Pen”, I can respect a man’s opinion, I can respect writings that make us all think a little bit, but, only if it comes from a first-person account. Opinions based on second, third, even fourth party information, to me, horse sh*t.
And when a columnist resorts to bullsh*t e-mails, or “sources”, or hides behind “my friend told me”, or uses idiots on Facebook as source material.
    Don’t even get me started.
    Remind anybody of somebody?

Now he’s all high and mighty, almost relishing it all over Facebook, bragging about doing two radio shows and a TV interview, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t a journalist, and I’m assuming that’s what a columnist is, well, isn’t one supposed to cover the story and not be the story?

I’m just venting, if I offended anyone, I apologize.

And no, I am not sucking up to Norm Chow. Fact is he should be criticized a bit, and fact is he should be thick-skinned enough to acceot it, deal with it. let us not forget, UH football team was 1-11 in 20-13, 4-20 in two seasons under Chow.
What in God’s name does he expect, praise?

Be real. That’s about all we as fans, readers, viewers and bloggers can ask for right?
Have an opinion, fine. Share an opinion, fine. but be factual and honest please. Making stuff up is for fairy tales.

  90. Kapahulu April 2, 2014 11:29 am

Spring Practice should be about things positive. We were all disappointed at last season’s won – loss record. We all need something positive to look forward to.
There will be plenty of time for negativity when the losses come in the Fall.
For now, we are still undefeated and can’t lose any games for the next 4-5 months.
Keep it positive and give the Team and the Coaches a chance and show our Support.

  91. SteveM April 2, 2014 11:33 am

OK, back from reading the paper. Got the answer to the question I asked yesterday about if Reardon was informed he was persona non grata before the incident.

ST wrote in the sports page…

…Through UH media relations director Derek Inouchi, Reardon was told Chow would not participate in post-practice interviews in the columnist’s presence. Post-practice interviews are conducted on the practice field.

Dave Reardon wrote on the S-A front page…

…[to Chow] You sent a staffer over twice to tell me you “didn’t want me here”. My response each time was words to the effect that I am not going anywhere and I had a right to be at an open practice at a state facility…

So, I gather that Chow’s action was not a spontaneous hissy-fit, but the enforcement of previously delineated consequences after at least 2 warnings.

Agreed. Dave Reardon got the confrontation he wanted. Coach didn’t disrupt practice, Dave knowingly did.

I’m also repeating myself, but for the last time on this point. I don’t speak for Chow and I absolutely don’t agree with his actions yesterday. He was stupid. BUT, this statement from Reardon’s January column is disgusting:

“Red flag? The same guy who said Clune will work his okole off and is very good on X’s and O’s — a guy who has known him a long time — added that “it’s gonna be a challenge for him to relate to the Hawaii kids.”

Pathetic Hack Reardon hiding behind some fictitious imaginary source. What BS. If this “same guy” had said Clune was a drug addicted serial pedophile, would it be okay to print that statement? Obviously not, UNLESS independent investigative reporting turned up substantiation. So why is it okay to print “same guy’s” opinion that Clune will have difficulty relating to the “Hawaii kids”?

That’s just an idle, made up statement from sOme guy, i.e. Hack Reardon, who is AFRAID to state the opinion as his own. You guys who think Reardon is some brave reporter with integrity are silly. He’s gutless, plain and simple.

Man up, Hack. Stand by your thoughts. Own your own opinions. Stop hiding behind some fictitious “source”. Base COWARD.

Most of us folks that have been around a bit, know that whether it was a teacher, coach, or boss, the relationships in which we extract much professional and/or personal growth, are sometimes, not free swinging and easy. They place demands on our previous experience and skill sets. What is common to these experiences, is these people have a consistent interest in our lives, and provide the resources and energies for us to involve to the next level. Hmmmn, something like a good coach does for his players…

  105. Lowtone123 April 2, 2014 12:28 pm

Your absolutely right ST, but I have a problem with Dave’s column in today’s SA. I think Coach Chow could have handled it better. We know he wears his emotions on his sleeve and he let it get to him personally. But what Dave as a columnist knows and used it to his advantage is that he can hide behind the First Admendment right to free speech and say whatever he wants but Coach Chow can’t as an employee and a representative of UH. This matter is better handled behind close doors Dave. You say it doesn’t make Chow or UH look good but you could add yourself as well.

  106. Haleakala April 2, 2014 12:29 pm

    Boo:

That is very true. Many times you don’t realize what a mentor did for you until much later.

  107. Tom April 2, 2014 12:32 pm

I thought hiring Chow was a mistake from the start. I thought his approach to the game was not suited to Hawaii. I hoped he proved me wrong. So far, he has NOT proved me wrong. I like DR and others, are disgusted with the past two years.

But now, I am pulling for Chow to succeed. He is a top notch offensive mind. There were some green shoots last season. Chow seems to be putting in a lot of effort, as evidenced by the players he has recruited. There seems to be incremental improvement in the coaching staff.

The problem with his approach is that it takes time, and then, it still might not be enough with the disadvantages inherent with UH football. I see he is trying to build a solid foundation for the program. But again, this takes time. Unfortunately, most people want a winner and now. Never mind the bad consequences later.

June Jones and the run and shoot is an example. Yes, you can get quick results. But it will only take you so far. Yes, we went to the Sugar Bowl. But only to get exposed by being blown out and embarrassed. So we must choose. Go fast and limit your upside, or be patient and build something with a stronger foundation that will last longer and hopefully, reap bigger rewards.

Pete Carroll is the antithesis of Chow. One is energetic and enthusiastic, the other is stoic and placid.

The HC sets the tone for the program and is the face of the program. It is as much a selling job, as it is Xs and Os. You must sell the players, the coaches, and the fans, on your direction and skill to do the job. Communication is critical.

What happened yesterday is not good. Chow did not handle himself as he should, period.

  108. Same Guy April 2, 2014 12:36 pm

Reardon asked me for some dirt on Clune and I didn’t have any so I just told him that Clune was a drug addicted serial pedophile, but Reardon said he couldn’t use that.

So I told him instead that Clune disliked reggae, hated going to the beach, and ate potatoes with every meal. And Reardon said, “Perfect’.

  109. jeezy33 April 2, 2014 12:55 pm

Anyone have the link to this Reardon on Clune article? I am curious to see how offensive it is… If all he said was the hire is a red flag then lets get real…. it’s just an opinion … I think any Chow hire can be considered a “red flag” after TK, Tommy Lee, Tuioti, Rauscher, and Price couldn’t cut it. Before the hiring of Gouveia, this team hardly has any Hawaii ties so I don’t see it as a problem if someone thinks there is an issue with having a staff made up of majority mainland guys.

  110. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 12:56 pm

Several years ago, I heard a UH quarterback was suspended.
I called the head coach, who didn’t return messages.
So I called the player, who confirmed he was suspended.
The quarterback then called the head coach โ€” to cut a deal, I suppose โ€” and the coach “suspended” me. I’d ask him a question, he’d stare blankly, and then Ferd would ask the question and I would record the coach’s answer. Then everyone got together, the “suspension” was lifted, mostly because UH acknowledge it had no authority to suspend me.
When I became the UH men’s volleyball beat writer in 2001, Mike Wilton summoned me into his office. He said we’d get along well as long as I gave him a chance to respond to any controversial story. I agreed, and we had a great relationship. I broke stories about suspensions, fights transfers and the loss of a national title. He never objected because I gave him a chance to comment.
    We all can get along.

in the “perfect season” run to the Sugar Bowl, it was reported that Tomey, the HC at San Jose State, refused to vote Hawaii in the top 20 in the country when UH needed his support to increase their ranking

I respect his position, but being a former UH HC and in the WAC, why not give UH and the WAC a much needed boost?

Did he really feel that UH was NOT a top 20 team? Maybe he was upset that SJS lost that “mud bowl” game in the last few seconds.

that sounds like a knock on the local boys.

local boys and girls have excelled at playing sports at nearly every college on the continent, at all levels of competition. don’t think any coaches found it a “challenge” to relate.

  125. Kapahulu April 2, 2014 2:04 pm

Just out from SA Online Front Page by Dave Reardon:

After the incident at University of Hawaii football practice Tuesday morning, I was asked by UH sports media relations director Derek Inouchi if I’d be willing to meet with coach Norm Chow to “clear the air.”

I agreed, and we met this morning for about 40-45 minutes in Inouchi’s office. We shook hands, we talked story and we shook hands again and went on with our days.

It was an amicable meeting. Most of what we discussed will remain among the three of us, at least for now, but the most important thing is that we all agreed to communicate better and to move forward.

I will be welcome at open practices, and I will be allowed to interview coach Chow and players, as other media members will, of course.

I submit this at around 1:30 p.m. About an hour ago, I learned that Chow has agreed to be a radio guest on the Sports Animal Show this afternoon, a show which I happen to be guest co-hosting, with Chris Hart, on KKEA 1420-AM. Chow is scheduled to join us at 3:35 p.m.

    OK, time to go home!

  164. kawika49 April 2, 2014 3:37 pm

#154 in the Nam we were required to give all booty to the supply SGT. We were allowed to keep an AK, flag, and other pieces upon; approval of command, upon our DEROS.

  165. jimmy the lock April 2, 2014 3:41 pm

A-House, those could be seat numbers.

  166. gobows April 2, 2014 3:48 pm

    153

    fast food?

  167. gobows April 2, 2014 3:49 pm

is chow hinting that we may see more 2 back sets, with joey lead blocking?

  168. My take April 2, 2014 3:50 pm

Sheesh it’s a love fest. Reardon keeps chuckling at Chows stories. Funs over ๐Ÿ™

  169. Shoko April 2, 2014 3:50 pm

Pretty good Sports Animal show. Glad they decided to talk more about football with Chow instead of what happened yesterday.

  170. Fei Jai April 2, 2014 3:51 pm

Listening to chow is painful. No wonder byu said thanks, but no thanks. Sounds like Larry price. Pidgin to the max. Guy hagi’s brother.

  171. Rodney April 2, 2014 3:59 pm

    Max we need you!!!!

  172. Da Punchbowl Kid April 2, 2014 4:02 pm

    A-house –

Make no mistake, the TV guys are there on regular basis, if not them, then their cameras. My point is, Tsai rarely, if ever, misses a practice.

I can’t blame him for feeling a little chippy.

  173. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 4:05 pm

All I know is I spent a two-hour practice with my cell phone in my crotch because it was raining and I got six minutes of interviews โ€” total โ€” out of it.

  174. lonomakana April 2, 2014 4:10 pm

OK, so they kissed and made up. My problem is the StarAdvertiser has someone involved in the story… reporting the story. There has to be some journalistic rule against this.

  175. lonomakana April 2, 2014 4:11 pm

    175. Did you at least have it on vibrate?

  176. Boolakanaka April 2, 2014 4:18 pm

    177-lol

  177. Rodney April 2, 2014 4:25 pm

Coach Chow Thank you for coming
home to help the university football
program! Dave Reardon shame on you,
    Coach Clune just scrap!!!

  178. Otto April 2, 2014 4:29 pm

#110 – I remember watching you on the news, with your handheld recorder in the face of the player chasing him down the field and he wouldn’t talk to you. I think Wags said it was because you called a player after hours when it was his rule that reporters only talk to players during certain hours….

  179. Boolakanaka April 2, 2014 4:29 pm

177–Wise old Taoist priest say, man with hand always in pocket feel cocky.

  180. jiminycricket April 2, 2014 4:33 pm

    Conclusions from Yesterday:
    1. DR did not bait NC. DR just showed up at practice like all the other journalists. Obvious NC was holding in bitterness from January and let it all out.
    2. NC does not know how to handle media nor does he understand the power of the media. (Last year: “I’m too old for this!!)
    3. NC does not necessarily get along with people; see Pete Carroll, Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin. Reardon is not the first (or the last).
    4. We need JJ back here to put the fun back in football aka “fun”ball.
    5. Reardon went to the top journalism school in the US for two years; Northwestern University. He did not do anything wrong.
    6. ST had a warm phone for two hours.
    7. We need to pray for NC and DR…. and ST’s phone.

  181. lonomakana April 2, 2014 4:42 pm

    177. Touch-et

  182. lonomakana April 2, 2014 4:43 pm

    oops. 181

  183. Old School Dave April 2, 2014 4:49 pm

You watch, DR will be next week’s guest on Leahey and Leahey. Garens.

  184. Tired April 2, 2014 4:53 pm

What coach and DR making up? What’s next Fei Jai and Norm dancing cheek to cheek?

  185. Warrior Dave April 2, 2014 5:01 pm

ESPN 1420 to replay the Coach Norm interview just after 5:00.

  186. Warrior Dave April 2, 2014 5:08 pm

    #160. Mr. A-House,

If you haven’t, please try the gon Lo mein from Char Hung Sut. I think they make the best and the price per order of $5.75 is a bargain. Box looks small but the little ladies in back request pack the noodles down.

  187. Fei Jai April 2, 2014 5:16 pm

At 181. Laughed my azz off. That was funny.

  188. Fei Jai April 2, 2014 5:18 pm

    Still laughing.

  189. old808 April 2, 2014 5:27 pm

*181 Boola must have been a young taoist because I put my hands in my pocket and I no feel cocky.

  190. old808 April 2, 2014 5:32 pm

#172 you can state your opinions without having to be ugly. It is obvious that you don’t like Coach Chow but you come off as a bigot.

  191. wilfred yamasawa April 2, 2014 5:38 pm

WOW..all this over a head coach and a sports writer, really…?. The team will be undefeated for the next 5 months or so. Celebrate that.
Those of you who can’t stand the coach come up with the bucks to buy him out.
Those of you who want him come up with the funds to keep him.

  192. JustAsking April 2, 2014 5:59 pm

ST- I echo what others have posted — thank you for reporting the news and not trying to be the news. The rhetorical question was posed: “what was all this crap for?” Well, DR gets front page coverage of his self serving article, and invitations to radio spots. Someone asked the question as to why DR gets the front page for his article reporting on his confrontation. Very good question.

  193. kawika49 April 2, 2014 6:21 pm

I Nokea about the the Hc or DR, I care about how the boys are doing.

  194. Fei Jai April 2, 2014 6:47 pm

:A writer should write; a coach should coach.

No. Just coach. Leave the press to inouchi.

  195. Old Diver April 2, 2014 7:07 pm

If a Norm Chow were the columnist and Dave Reardon were the coach would anyone here expect Norm to take it easy on Dave?

  196. I STAY TIRED ALREADY April 2, 2014 7:17 pm

THE NEIGHBOR’S DOG WEN FEI JAI IN MY YARD AGAIN

  197. al April 2, 2014 7:40 pm

  199. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2014 7:46 pm

On another note, I went to volleyball practice and Nick West: “You are not welcome here, sir.”
Volleyball players read the S-A, too.

  200. al April 2, 2014 8:03 pm

…and yet on another other note, big series for the vbows this weekend.

  201. al April 2, 2014 8:06 pm

non football and some other smaller sports nli coming up on the 16th.
gib’s got a couple more slots to fill.

  202. whitey April 2, 2014 8:09 pm

tomorrow’s practice will be intense, but with a purpose. right??? absolutely. go bows!!

  203. Warrior Dave April 2, 2014 8:10 pm

    #201 ST,

Was the VB player joking???? If not, another can of worms have just been opened IMHO.

  204. Old School Dave April 2, 2014 9:28 pm

I was wrong. DR was on tonight on L & L.

  205. NorthShoreFan April 2, 2014 9:32 pm

ow..DR writes his own SA Breaking News article…..cool

  206. jm2375 April 2, 2014 10:04 pm

    #201 – ๐Ÿ˜† sounds like Nick. ๐Ÿ™„

  207. BigWave96744 April 2, 2014 10:08 pm

Per HawaiiNewsNow, Rich Miano out as Kaiser coach

  208. nana April 2, 2014 10:20 pm

    Miano to UH?

  209. Kimberly April 2, 2014 10:23 pm

question: Is the University Of Hawaii athletics page not working?
Just wondering if anyone else can open the website or not.
    Thank You

  210. AlaWai April 2, 2014 11:08 pm

    Works on mine. http://hawaiiathletics.com/index.aspx
I had trouble earlier with Chrome. Reboot and reload.

  211. al April 2, 2014 11:16 pm

    nana…nono.

he’s jumping out of the frying pan.

  212. al April 2, 2014 11:17 pm

    205…you are joking right?

  213. Warrior Dave April 3, 2014 12:08 am

Al, my point is ST doesn’t deserve having Mr. West say something like that with malicious. I don’t know who this person is and I just want to make sure it was said in jest. ST doesn’t deserve this treatment from anyone at lower campus.

  214. Warrior Dave April 3, 2014 12:18 am

    Should be malice.

  215. al April 3, 2014 2:06 am

wd,,,nick west is the senior middle blocker for hawaii’s men’s volleyball team.
the subliminal message was “snark, snark”. st is the beat writer for vb and football.

  216. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2014 2:10 am

Nick West was joking. We were getting ready for the senior photo shoot. Volleyball is one of the best beats. Coaches are open, players are witty, and only beat writers show up for practices.

  217. maddog50 April 3, 2014 3:17 am

#33Hossana and #86 All Nuha…..you made my day—with all of the challenges that face the program, despite the record I think major progress is being made….time to sell some tickets, donate some money and support these players…..from my remote location in Chicago, I will see no less than three games two at home at least one mainland. I spend most days sporting one of my UH items hats Na Koa shirt or hoodie proudly, golf with Warrior head covers, always a conversation starter. I back these guys and just want to win for the sake of all Warrior fans, team and coaching staff….Go Warriors!!!!!

  218. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 5:09 am

Good morning all: Nice little piece on Marcus Mariota, local boy and on the short list for 2014 Heisman. Apparently, bruddha is getting all yoked out: http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2014/04/will_bulk_help_oregon_ducks_ma.html
