At the NFL Scouting Combine:

• Alex Green said he bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times.

Arena Football League training camps have opened, and UH is represented in the Bay Area.

Ray Hisatake, Aaron Kia and Francis Maka are members of the San Jose SaberCats, who return after a two-season hiatus. In the AFL, there are eight players on each side. On offense, there must be at least three offensive linemen. Hisatake plays guard, which is really a tackle. Kia is a tight end, which means he aligns as a guard but is eligible to catch passes. (The guard who raises his hand before the play is designated as the tight end.) Maka is a fullback, defensive end and linebacker.

The SaberCats’ quarterback is Mark Grieb, who was UH offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich’s SaberCat teammate several years ago. At team meetings, Grieb wears Eo Na Toa apparel sent to him by Rolovich, according to Hisatake.

Also, former UH slotback Mike Washington is an inside receiver for the Pittsburgh Power.

Well said and well done! Thanks for putting things into perspective.

  20. RainbowCliff February 26, 2011 11:03 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

BEAUTIFUL day here in LA as rains last night has given us
clear skies and brisky winds. Reminds me of San Francisco.

The combine here in Carson if weather permits should be
clear but the mornings are cold with fog and mist. Carson
gets warm by late afternoon as Home Depot is built on valleys
and hills some what like Manoa Valley. Pulled hamstrings seems
to be a problem with Hawaii players when they participated
in recent years. Hope that is not the case for Salas, Green
    and Pilares.

  21. 808ike February 26, 2011 11:05 am

    wow, idaho has three.

not surprised that bsu has five nor fresno and nevada with four.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid February 26, 2011 11:23 am

Can we get broadcasts of the Sabercat’s games on the net? That would be worth watching!

What’s the pay like in the AFL? Do the players work other jobs as well?

  27. al February 26, 2011 11:28 am

    pay?
probably close to minimum wage for all the practice/game prep hours spent.

it is a league of dreams yet to be fulfilled. i would think players are in these leagues to play out their dreams and hopefully get recognized by the big show and invited for a look-see.

i was thinking that this may be a venue for a healthy colt brennan.

  29. tom mui February 26, 2011 12:02 pm

AL #29 – wouldn’t Colt be better off (financially) with the Canadians?

  30. jm2375 February 26, 2011 12:12 pm

    Howzit Tsai-kos!!

Ralphie – missed the game. Hoyas without their leading scorer. BUT, I can’t tell you how much it pains me to lose to Syracuse and their crybaby coach Boeheim. There were reports that the Syracuse “fans” threw oranges at Patrick Ewing his freshman year. (sounds like some WAC fans).

Wahine play Fresneck Sunday? Was the game last year that Breanna (?) was given the business by an opposing player but the “ref” refused to throw her out?

See ya at the game tonight. Screechers like Sr. Nights. This will be their first basketball one. hehehe

  31. R Smoke February 26, 2011 12:17 pm

Not sure if this has been posted yet or not, but bleacher report rates Hawaii as the #1 school for a receiver to attend.

Those combine reports are a joke. A huge joke! And Deion Sanders isn’t physical and doesn’t like to tackle, BUT you still take the guy for what he CAN do. Geez.

Thanks for #18: Shults of Oklahoma added a homer today, a three-run one against Cal Poly. She has 10 now.

  36. Ralph February 26, 2011 1:01 pm

Alabama beat Missouri 3-1, Missouri ranked #18 is now 3-3. Alabama is undefeated.

    Pacific beat Oregon 4-2 today.

  37. djmitcho February 26, 2011 1:04 pm

Wow…I know Maka originally signed with Spokane for arena, but didn’t know he was now with San Jose…at least I’ll be able to watch them when they come to Spokane.

  38. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 1:10 pm

Santa Barbara ahead 11-3. Hope this continues to the 5th inning when the 8 run mercy rule comes into play. This will shorten the waiting time.

  39. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2011 1:36 pm

SAN JOSE (February 21, 2011) – The SaberCats today announced the additions of DL Francis Maka and DB Raphael Whitfield. The team also placed WR Joel Filani, DL Shemiah LeGrande, DB DeAndre Wright and WR Rodney Wright on the refused to report list.
    DL FRANCIS MAKA

Maka (6-2, 250) spent the 2010 season with the Arkansas Diamonds of the Indoor Football League. Prior to his time with Arkansas, he played two seasons at Hawaii, where he totaled 27 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two passes defensed in 16 games for the Warriors. Maka joined Hawaii after transferring from the College of San Mateo.

  40. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 1:36 pm

I assume that the Ohio State versus Santa Barbara is over, with the latter maintaining its 8 run lead after 5 innings. This means that the Hawaii will play in about 20 to 25 minutes from now, about 2 p.m. Go Wahine!

  41. Ralph February 26, 2011 1:39 pm

Stanford beats Kentucky 4-2, Ashley Chinn the winning pitcher.

  42. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2011 1:46 pm

    Virginia 0

RBIs a piece for Gonzalez and Rodriguez.

  46. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 2:08 pm

Bases loaded for Virginia after two errors. Not too good a start on defense.

  47. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 2:13 pm

Three errors, three runs scored. One out. 3-2 Virginia.

  48. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 2:14 pm

I predict Coolen will come back with no hair on his head. He must be pulling out all his hair right now. The Wahine are playing like the have never played the game of softball before. 3 errors in the 1st inning and counting, not to mention the mental mistakes already.

  49. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 2:16 pm

Instead of trying to win the game, they are trying to give it away. Not good.

  50. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 2:17 pm

Way to go Stephanie! Limited the damage with runners on 2nd and 3rd, 2 k’s. Still 3-2. Now the Bows have to hit.

  51. Ralph February 26, 2011 2:18 pm

6 innings to go, we will come back with everyone settling down, it’s not like Virginia is hitting Ricketts hard.

  52. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 2:19 pm

Cooley still keeps trying to get production out of 8th and 9th position. Trying Kaile Nakao and Shannon Lum today.

  59. Ralph February 26, 2011 2:48 pm

Fresno State ahead of Syracuse 1-0 after 2 and a half, FSU is the home team.

  60. al February 26, 2011 2:52 pm

tommui…he has got to have a chance first to get on the field. i am thinking that may be the fast track to play this year.

looks like the nfl will have an abbreviated season. i don’t think they’ll take a chance on an unproven, undrafted, older guy if such is the case. colt’s time is running down. he needs to get on the field at some level to prove his ability. if that is what he wants to do.

he needs some miracle like the kurt warner story.

  61. al February 26, 2011 2:53 pm

those are great numbers for alex and kealoha.

salas’ 15 ain’t so shabby either for a wr.

  62. al February 26, 2011 2:54 pm

tommui…being that colt is not pake’, it is more about the opportunity rather than the money.

  63. Ralph February 26, 2011 2:59 pm

Cal up on LSU 7-3 after 6.

  64. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 3:01 pm

Majam is in a real slump. Lots and lots of K’s in the last few games.

  65. A-joe February 26, 2011 3:04 pm

Glad to see the league is back. Just more opportunities for players to continue their careers.

  66. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:12 pm

Fresno State 1-0 up on Syracuse, Caira pitching for Syracuse, 0 Ks thru 3 innings, Moses with 7 Ks for FSU.

  67. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:19 pm

Cal up 11-3 on LSU, bottom 7th, LSU hitting.

  68. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 3:22 pm

Doesn’t look good for the Wahine. Triple brought in the tying run. No outs. The bottom of Hawaii’s batting order coming up in the top of the seventh

  69. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:22 pm

Nebraska losses to Nevada 4-1 this morning.

  70. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 3:25 pm

Error brought runner home. Another run. Now Virginia ahead, 6-4. Need big comeback in 7th inning.

  71. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:26 pm

defense needs to help Ricketts, 2 more unearned runs. Virginia must be playing small ball, two hits to the pitcher.

  72. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:27 pm

Question, people should now be asking, will the Wahine even finish in the top 3 of the WAC conference. Instead of trying to take steps forward, seems like they are taking alot of steps backward. My feeling is, the girls seem to think they can just step on the field and the other team will hand them a win.

  73. tom mui February 26, 2011 3:28 pm

AL #66 The Canadian football seems more likely a venue for Colt – longer field, the usual 11 (or was it 12) people as opposed to the numbers in Arena football. Would appear to me that NFL types would be more impressed by his performance there than on a 50-yard Arena.

  74. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:29 pm

top 7th, last chance, down 2 with the bottom of the order up.

  75. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:31 pm

Ricketts has given up a lot of hits but its not hurting her, what hurts is the defense lapses, she has given up only 1 earned run and she is down 6-4.

  76. kev-1 February 26, 2011 3:31 pm

anyone know why the tv listing says mens baseball is on at 3 on K5, but its not on?

  77. Last Call February 26, 2011 3:32 pm

I’m having trouble understanding why the turnaround with this SB team after beating OK which should have given them a huge boost in confidence.I’m just not getting it.

  78. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:35 pm

    Last Call,

It is very simple, the Wahine have gotten to big for their britches. Inotherwards, very big headed, they now think they can just walk onto the playing field and the other team will hand them a win, on a silver platter.

  79. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:37 pm

That is 3 very bad losses in a row, playing real badly, like the bottom half of teams in the NCAA. Not even looking like a NCAA tournament team. It is not that they lose, but the way they are losing, like they do not care.

  80. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 3:37 pm

Game over as expected with the bottom of the order up for the seventh. Three losses in row. The long road trip comes to an end. Expect Hawaii to fall out of or drop sharply in the national rankings. Hope the long home stand will rejuvenate the Wahine. I don’t doubt that Hawaii will do well in the WAC. Beyond that. Who knows.

  81. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:40 pm

With a very low RPI rating, as Coolen says they have, these loses really hurt them, when it comes to selecting NCAA tournament teams.

  82. Last Call February 26, 2011 3:42 pm

Talk about going from hero to zero.

  83. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 3:43 pm

Too many errors, too many KOs in the last three games.
Wahine have to regroup in the batting cage and get back to basics.
Striking out is contagious on this team, so are the errors. They are accumulating like raindrops in a monsoon storm.

This is where Coolen earns his pay.

if anyone is guilty of being overconfident Coolen has to take the blame.
He said, after glowing preseason press reports about his team,
“we no longer rebuild, we reload”. For some, that sent the wrong message to his team.

  84. Last Call February 26, 2011 3:45 pm

Rest of our schedule before the WAC season dosen’t look all the impressive to me. Should be a lot of wins there but they won’t be quality wins .

  85. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:46 pm

Hopefully, the underclasspeople will learn from this season, and truly take it upon themselves to work on their individual game in the off season. Only losing 2 seniors so next year looks quite bright if they learn from a season that got away. This current team is not going really anywhere, not matter how much you want them to. The problems started in the offseason, by not working on their individual game.

  86. RedZone February 26, 2011 3:47 pm

Way too many errors. Virginia is not home run team but have good small ball lineup. This was a good experience for the Wahine to face this kind of a team. Hard to fix things on the road. Things will change when they return.

  87. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:48 pm

I’m confident the NCAA will select Na Wahine, when the season ends the team will be up there with the best in won loss record. We may not get a good seeding but getting into the tournament is of paramount importance and in that, we will prevail.

We faced good pitching in this tournament, Caira of Syracuse did a great job with 16 Ks. She has only one to date against Fresno State and its 1-0 after 4 in favor of FSU. Our defense cost the girls the last two games, tighten it up and we are in the ball game and winners. Too many unearned runs, but that’s part of the game, and not a reflection on the team being a bad team.

Na Wahine hosts a tournament next week at home, game starts at 12 noon on Friday.

Na Wahine plays an exhibition against Tokyo at 6 pm on Thursday.

  88. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:50 pm

The only player I am not worried about, is Kelly Majam, I know she will be the first one off the plane, and the first one in the batting cage. I truly have my doubts about the rest of the girls, tho, sorry to say. They have this impression that they do not really have to practice, just go thru the motions. You can see it between games, and innings during the past homestand.

  89. haka February 26, 2011 3:50 pm

Those of little faith are just that because their own expectations are not met in their perfectly small minds. You are the ones who cannot handle. How nice it must be to be so perfectly small.

  90. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:51 pm

    Ralph,

Need to remember how many of those wins will be quality wins, not just alot of wins against so-so teams.

  91. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 3:52 pm

Like to hear Coolen’s take on the three losses. He always has interesting observations to make. I don’t think the long road trip is a legitimate excuse for the mediocre performance. However, there may be one exception to that—Majam. The cancer treatments may have affected her stamina. As I said above, lots of K’s and outs for her in the last three games. Another factor that may be affecting morale is the collective slump of the Wahine bench who have been shuttled in and out of the line up in the 8th and 9th positions. They may be down for their lack of contribution so far. Collectively, they are hitting way under .100. This may affect the whole team chemistry. Just speculating….

  92. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 3:52 pm

We play CAL and BYU prior to conference, no easy marks.
Besides, when a team is struggling like the wahine, every game is a challenge.
Until Coach makes the proper adjustments in field-focus and batter-strikeouts, the road will remain rocky…..and, no rollovers.

  93. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:53 pm

Na Wahine did not face the bottom of the barrel NCAA softball teams, Syracuse won the Big East last season, and Virginia finished second in the ACC.

The Big 12 usually sends 6 to 8 teams to the NCAA regionals, so splitting with them is good. Oklahoma was pre season front runner to win the Big 12.

  94. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:53 pm

    Ralph,

Also, top NCAA tournament teams do not make those kinds of mistakes, only average to below average teams make those kinds of mistakes.

  95. Ralph February 26, 2011 3:56 pm

In the Pac 10, as of today, UCLA, Oregon, Arizona State, and Stanford with 2 losses each, and Arizona and Cal with one lose. Only UDub is undefeated.

  96. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 3:56 pm

Looks like I will have to rest my voice this week cause I will be using it alot with this coming tournament, making sure the Wahine stay in line. I did it last year, was hoping I did not have to do it this year, but I was wrong, need to do it again. And YES, that means I will be at Wahine Softball Stadium.

  97. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 3:57 pm

I dont see what fan faith has to do with multiple-errors and strikeouts. Unless, you are “watching’ this team with brail and rooting by prayer.

  98. Last Call February 26, 2011 3:59 pm

I’m not going to unload on them because who am I to do so. I’m just disappointed because they’re better than this.

  99. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 4:01 pm

    Last Call,

Are they really better than this, or was last year just a fluke.

  100. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 4:04 pm

WSF, make sure you wear a nametag, so Kazz can bless u. JK. 🙂
Im just hoping K5 signs you both to broadcast the games–anyone but chrissy. You 2 would rock as a tandem voice for the wahine!

  101. haka February 26, 2011 4:04 pm

#87 schedule should reflect schedule in two weeks, March 10 to 14th.

  103. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 4:09 pm

C’mon, last year was no fluke. The wahine earned every victory and national recognition was well deserved. No issue there. This team has veteran scrappers–they’ll be back. Coach needs to start coaching!

yeah, the immediate return schedule is not intimidating so, we can take baby-steps to rehab our game and get it rollin again. agree.

  106. Old Diver February 26, 2011 4:12 pm

How many here have ever been on a long road trip sleeping in different hotels and playing ball? I’ve been on short road trip before to Las Vegas. Even those are not easy. Those slot machines are terrors. Has the softball team ever made excuses? I might be wrong but isn’t the worse thing that happened this week was they lost a few games? Hurt pride maybe but these are tough girls who will come back. Count on it.

  107. Ralph February 26, 2011 4:18 pm

Tennessee defeated last year’s national champs 7-1, Renfroe struck out 10 Bruins, 1 bb, and UCLA committed 5 errors. Do they give up the season, no! it’s one game, even the best can lose on any given day in softball or baseball for that matter.

The Pac 10 have won nearly all of the NCAA championships, and this preseason alone, UCLA, Stanford, Arizona State and Oregon with 2 losses. Arizona and Cal with one and UDub undefeated. But there are more games today and tomorrow in the Cathedral City Classic and many more to come in pre season. It’s a long way to regional selection, its time the coaches retool their teams and find what he or she has to compete in their respective leagues and earn an NCAA bid.

  108. Lanaiboy February 26, 2011 4:19 pm

Thought Fresno State would jump in the rankings after this tournament buy may not. Up to the game with Syracuse, the team was undefeated. However, Syracuse came back in the top of the seventh to beat Fresno. Both Fresno State and Nevada had impressive victories (e.g. Nevada over Nebraska). These two teams will present good challenges for the Rainbows and both should have good RPI’s.

The best remedy for the Na Wahine is for all of us on the blog to show up Friday, March 4 at the RWSS at 6 pm to cheer for them as they face off with St. Bonaventure.

Forget GT or Live Stats, come on out to the ball park on Friday at 6 p.m. It’s free, but we are accepting donations for the Na Wahine and I hope many of you will join the booster club.

  111. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 4:23 pm

    Ralph,

UCLA’s loss to Tennessee was a quality loss, same goes for the losses in the PAC-10, when they play each other.

  112. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 4:25 pm

The only player that has improved from last year is Sarah Robinson, all the other girls, with the exception of Kelly Majam (due to medical reasons), has taken a step or more backwards. Which can only mean a lack of serious offseason training and conditioning.

  113. Last Call February 26, 2011 4:26 pm

Texas and UH still zip zip at the end of six.

  114. RupertDaStupert February 26, 2011 4:32 pm

The SB team made its first entry to the WWS. The mens baseball team reached the world series only once in the UH 100 plus years history. Dave Shoji’s famed coaching history only got the wahine’s to the final four only a handful of times since the T. Williams era. The basketball and football teams never got close to world titles in their 100 plus years. Only the wahine’s VB teams won national titles. Pretty bad record when you consider how long we’ve been in existence. So its not strange to me what happened to the wahine’s sb team. It is what it is. There’s always tomorrow and better days ahead. GIV em GIB!

  115. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 4:46 pm

UH fans should treat the players, of any sport, as heroes only when they win the whole bloody thing, not for just getting close. When the players are treated as heroes for getting close, they tend to get beheaded not practice like they should. You can see it in past UH sports history. No matter what sport, they can never back up a season that just fell short with a season where they win it all. They always fall flat on their faces the following year.

  116. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 4:48 pm

    Hawaiiansun,

#100, I do not have to wear a nametag, Kazz, has met me before.

  117. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 4:48 pm

WSF, Iwata aint doing bad. She is ahead of last years performance in the box and on the field. Recall, last year she was making errors galore in the early season and still struggling with bat contact. She is out in front this year. Alex too, is ahead and didnt KO against Ricketts after both majam and iwata whiffed. She doubled against keilani and drove in a run. Melissa has been on fire over the last 4 games AB, but has made errors in the last three contests. JRod has been a team player at DP, RF and even a stint at 2B. She has played steady and moved up to #6, a tough spot bc pitchers do not fear the bottom of our order.
In terms of Kelly, coach Coolen said earlier she is playing at 75%. She still is inspirational and makes 150% effort. True, her HR production has slipped a notch.

We are hurting in the 8 and 9 spot, vacated by traci and katie….that remains a major project for coach Coolen.

Ricketts and Kaia are Ok, and in my opinion pitching better than last year and Sharla has been a gift. Sarah Robinson leads the team in hitting and may well be on her way to a breakout year. Another pleasant surprise.

Still too early to abandon ship> LOL. But, not too soon to ring the wake-up bell!

  118. haka February 26, 2011 4:50 pm

UH fans should treat all student athletes with respect win, lose or draw.

  119. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 4:57 pm

    Hawaiiansun,

I do not include Kelly Majam in anything, due to her medical reasons. Anything we can get from her this year is a plus. But to see her trying and not seeing that from any of the other girls is very disappointing. The girls should be more consistant, but they are not. If you were at the stadium during the first homestand, you could feel the uppidy attitude the girls had. Like they could just walk onto the field and the opposing team would just lay down for them.

  127. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 5:15 pm

  128. Old Diver February 26, 2011 5:19 pm

If I were Coolen? I’m more interested in what Coolen would do.

  129. cocobean February 26, 2011 5:28 pm

WSF, the only question I have. Are you Steve? Some have insinuated you are, you have not denied it.

  130. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 5:33 pm

I am not him, some have insinuated that I am, but I do not even know that guy. I have denied it a few times before.

  131. cocobean February 26, 2011 5:48 pm

    WSF

You are entitled to opinion even though your are ruffling quite a few feathers here. I respect the fact you attend WS games.

My concern is you’re showing signs of having Steve-itis. You can find the full blown effects of Steve-itis in the archives of Cindy Luis’s blog.

  132. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 5:51 pm

    Cocobean,

The difference between Steve and me, I have not singled out any player. I made my comments to the team and coach as a whole, not individually.

  133. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 5:57 pm

There is one player tho that seems to have been getting worse as the years have gone by. I thought strength coaches are suppose to be able to make players run faster, but in her case, she seems to have gotten slower. To the point, if she gets a base hit to right field she would still get thrown out at first. My feeling is that if she even gets a base hit to center field she would get thrown out at first, that would be quite shameful.

  134. cocobean February 26, 2011 6:03 pm

    WSF

    Just saying you’re showing signs.

  135. Ralph February 26, 2011 6:24 pm

Georgia ahead of Arizona 7-1, bottom 5, Bulldogs batting. Both are #1 depending on the poll. Tuesday there will be a shake out in the polls but Na Wahine will be up there in the top 20. A lot of the other ranked teams fell in the Cathedral City Classic.

  136. SteveM February 26, 2011 6:29 pm

…but set your DVR’s to record “The Guardian” if you have not seen it. Same time: 7:00 PM on TNT (Oceanic 53, digital 553). My interest is that this is the first USCG flick to be made that is not in black & white. 🙂 Kevin Costner as a rescue swimmer (jumps out of helicopters) in Alaska (Attu). World’s Most Dangerous Catch fishing area.

I was an “A” School instructor in a different speciality and don’t know how grueling the Rescue Swimmer school, as depicted, really is…but the show gives good insight into the “mentality” of Coasties. The bar fight scene is indicitive… 🙄

  137. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 6:29 pm

Do not be shocked if the Wahine do actually fall out of the rankings.

  140. Ralph February 26, 2011 6:37 pm

end of 5, Georgia 8-0 up on Arizona. Considering who is the coach of Arizona, I am rooting for Georgia to stomp the Wildcats, I think Candrea is full of BS. He was the Coach Michelle Smith kept referring to regarding teams using “hot bats” to hit home runs. Our Na Wahine 158 put his team in second place in home run totals for a season. 🙂

  141. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 6:45 pm

WSF, I dont see the wahine as arrogant and yes I did attend the first homestand to see a game or two.
Inner attitude is tough to spot unless you are a coach or around the clubhouse daily.
Body language can be easily subjective. Not saying, you dont have a valid point. I just dont know and am relying on instinct about the character of this team. I did say, however, if there is arrogance, Coach Coolen is to blame. He is their mentor.

Case in point. REM Mighty Mouse? Chad Owens. he was developing a swell head as a frosh and the coaches had to knock him down a notch. Chad, caught the message, the rest is history.
I dont se that with this group. They are a fine bunch of ladies with a compelling competitive nature, but they do need to refocus as a unit.

I do believe, however, there is distraction. Stephanie Ricketts hinted as much.
    Look, the #8 and #9 batters (7 players) have 92 ABs and 8 hits (6 by two) and have KO’d 32 X.
Therein is part of the problem. It is unsettling. I would be worried if our pitchers were not in game stride–but, they are in good form.

The D collapsed in several games. last year it was worst, with Iwata, Yoshikawa and Amanda suffering early season lapses. They got it together.
I stand by my comment about our high-five–kelly, jess, melissa, alex and jenna. they are OK and working out the kinks in the batter box. most teams have a resume on these 5. the others are unknown and should be exploiting that luxury. Sharla and sarah have capitalized.

  142. hawaiiansun February 26, 2011 6:49 pm

zack swazey w 2-out run double in 9th to send the game into Xtra innings. bottom 11thbennet on 2nd 1 out. Guess wh’s batting? yep, swazey.

Here is a hint on how disappointed the UH Athletic Department is in the Wahine Softball Team, there is nothing written about their lost to Virginia on their Website, hawaiiathletics.com

  156. seasider February 26, 2011 10:30 pm

    Recapping UH sports for Saturday:

Virginia hands UH softball its 3rd straight road loss by the score of 6-4. Virginia rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The wahine committed four errors contributing to four unearned runs—ditto versus Syracuse yesterday, losing 3-2. If it wasn’t for the errors, the softball wahine should’ve, would’ve, could’ve been 3 and 1 on this road trip. Wahine record, 12-4.

Women’s tennis upended by San Diego State for its second straight home match with a 5-2 loss to No. 62 San Diego State. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 3-7 with the loss.

Track & field finishes seventh at WAC indoor championships.

Women’s swimming & diving takes second in WAC championships. Emma Friesen was named the WAC Diver of the Year, giving the Rainbow Wahine that award in nine of the last s10 seasons. Mike Brown was voted Diving Coach of the Year for the sixth year in a row and seventh time in his career.

Men’s swimming & diving wins First C-USA Championship Title.

The No. 5 UH Water Polo went undefeated on the first day of the Polo UC Irvine Invitational. UH beat No. 12 Cal State Northridge, 12-5 and No. 4 California 6-5.

Rainbows win 15-inning thriller over Texas, 5-4. Chris Peterson scored the game winner from third base on a wild pitch. Montplaisir, Peterson had three hits, and Van Doornum, Swasey paired hits. Starter Little went 6 innings, giving up 3 hits, 0 runs; he was followed by Capual who went 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits. Walters and Gallagher shut down the Longhorns in relief going 4 and 3 innings respectively.

The Rainbow Warrior basketball team on Senior Night defeated New Mexico State, 76-70, behind Zane Johnson 22 points, Vander Joaquim’s 18 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks, Amis 14 points, 11 rebounds, and Ostrowski’s 7 assists. Joaquim and Ostrowski fouled out. Three UH seniors—Bill Amis, Hiram Thompson, and Douglas Kurtz—each started the game.

  159. WahineSoftballFan February 26, 2011 10:46 pm

Here’s hoping the Wahine go straight to the Softball field and batting house to practice, cause they really need it. The only way to get better is practice, practice, and more practice. Not go straight to their dorm rooms, to sleep.

  160. papajoe2 February 26, 2011 10:53 pm

    I made a mistake.

Hawaiiansun says that IF arrogance is a culprit then it woukd be on the coach.

Have to opine that its an unfair assumption regardless of a quote from a newspaper article.

Coach has said in the newspaper as well how previous teams had let downs after good seasons and would not let it end up this way this time.

Arrogance is not something I personally see with this team having seen a few practices in the fall and spring and speaking with coach “off the record so to speak”.

  164. Rosaline Longan February 26, 2011 11:11 pm

It’s kinda like leahey saying tonight regarding Vanders dunk attempt late in the first half. ‘ hey blew the layup’ . First he didn’t blow a layup he was dunking, second he got mauled on the way up. It’s that kind of bs that needs to be curbed.

Leahey couldn’t dunk if he had a ten foot ladder. Hey needs to reevaluate his retoric.

Morning all. I have to agree with Steve M. This site has to be the most eclectic and diverse assembly of characters of any football blog in the country. Sometimes it’s just plain fun to just sit there and read all those varied and informed bits and pieces of real knowledge. There are a lot of informational tid-bits bandied about I would love more elaboration on, but then the reading of this blog might become a full time job.

Well, I’ve been watching the NFL combine this morning featuring QB’S and WR’S; and I don’t see, so far, any of our UH recievers on the board or anywhere on the field??? I keep hearing the host’s remarks about a second group or qb’s/wr’s, who have yet to make an appearance???…..so I’m hoping to see what goes?
The marquee performance standard, is the 40 times for wr’s.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  193. christian louboutin outlet March 3, 2011 12:04 am

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
