Let the meetings begin

SALT LAKE CITY — Just checked into the hotel for the WAC Media Preview. It should be interesting since, as we reported before, half of the schools won’t be distributing media guides this year. Mack, Brashton Satele and John Estes don’t arrive until tomorrow. I guess it’s time to hit the mall.

Saddleback CC linebacker Akoni Lasconia is expected to join the Warriors in January.

It has been said athletic director Jim Donovan showed leadership by accepting a 7 percent paycut.
But I think it would have showed courage to not take a paycut.
Take a furlough. Lead a Hi-5 drive. Defer part of the income.
But now it puts the heat on every athletic department employee, including coaches, to accept a paycut or else appear to be greedy. What’s a coach to say if asked?
Think about how much difficulty UH had in its recent hirings. It won’t be easier to attract quality coaches knowing that, after signing, there might be pressure to accept reduced pay.
Your thoughts?

Former UH setter Brian Beckwith is interested in serving as a graduate assistant for the Warrior volleyball team. Last season, he played professionally in Europe.

Why are you still up, Al?

  3. al July 28, 2009 3:03 am

yah, my first reaction was, “now what?”

although, i suppose that 7 percent is better than the near 14% reduction the three day furlough would have caused.

i guess now the others would have to follow suit or seem a bit chicken “s”. well for one coach wouldn’t only the amount paid by the state be subject to a percentage reduction?

  4. al July 28, 2009 3:04 am

    too much green tea tonight.

  5. al July 28, 2009 3:06 am

    what time?

  8. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 3:13 am

    I’m curious:
If a coach takes a paycut, the savings goes to the athletic department, not the school, right?

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

ST – was your “friend” working the flight??

  16. rage777 July 28, 2009 4:28 am

If Mac takes a pay cut, does half of it go back to the boosters? Why does Jim Donovan need three associate ADs?

If I was in charge, I would cut some of those secretaries over there. When I worked in the UH system as a student, we did all the work and the secretaries would talk story all day. Take two hour lunch breaks and 1 hour coffee breaks in the morning. I would just replace the secretaries with student helpers who are cheaper.

  17. Garret July 28, 2009 4:29 am

RGM appears to have lost his starting spot.

Rather than continue the trend of making a change in his starting lineup every week, Buono lined up the Lions as they were for starters prior to the Calgary avalanche. That meant receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen was still behind Rufus Skillern and veteran cornerback LaVar Glover was watching rookie Trestin George.

  18. rage777 July 28, 2009 4:32 am

LA Times story that says the Rose Bowl might have to take a non-BCS team. It talks a lot about Hawaii in the article. It would be super cool if Hawaii could go to the Rose Bowl.

  19. Garret July 28, 2009 4:33 am

Today’s update on Ingram. He’s missed the rookie reporting date and practice begins on Thursday.

The Patriots finalized a contract with their top draft choice yesterday, inking safety Patrick Chung to deal that leaves the club with two unsigned rookies – injured linebacker Tyrone McKenzie (third round) and long snapper Jake Ingram (sixth round). Terms of Chung’s contract were not disclosed, but it was expected to be a four-year deal. Rookies were scheduled to report for meetings and physicals Sunday, and the parameters of Chung’s deal were in place so he could attend. Veterans are due to report tomorrow, with the first, official full-team practice on Thursday.

As for McKenzie, there isn’t urgency to strike a deal because he tore his ACL in rookie minicamp and is expected to be sidelined for the season. Ingram is slated to compete with veteran Nathan Hodel for the job held by Lonie Paxton the past nine seasons

  20. Garret July 28, 2009 4:34 am

If Mac takes a pay cut, does half of it go back to the boosters?

Mac’s salary comes from the UH Athletic Department. Half of JJ’s salary was from boosters, but they decided to have all of Mac’s salary come from the Athletic Department when they did his contract.

  21. rage777 July 28, 2009 4:36 am

Thanks Garret, I didn’t know that. Maybe we should get the boosters to pay for half now. 😉

  22. Garret July 28, 2009 4:36 am

If a coach takes a paycut, the savings goes to the athletic department, not the school, right?

The reduction in expenses would reduce the Athletic Department’s expenses, of course. That would also help UH in general because UH is covering the Athletic Department’s deficit.

  23. Garret July 28, 2009 4:37 am

It would be hard to get that done now due to the economy…plus, I’d rather have the boosters donate straight to Na Koa or the Athletic Department in general.

  24. Garret July 28, 2009 4:39 am

I don’t think that the salary reductions being pushed for UH coaches will hurt hiring future coaches. I don’t think that there are any big coaching vacancies right now, and things will be quite different in a year or two.

There seems to be a big push to reduce coaching salaries at UH, especially for the non-revenue sports, so it isn’t like UH is going after the coaches who want the big contracts.

  25. Garret July 28, 2009 4:43 am

I think that it is great that JD took the pay cut, and how that the associate ADs take one also. I could see a problem for coaches to do so due to contract language…what if the coaches voluntarily donate 7% of their salary to the Athletic Department? That would preserve their salaries and give them a tax deduction, plus boost Athletic Department fundraising.

If UH sponsors could do some type of matching donation with the coach’s donations, that would be even better.

  26. whitey July 28, 2009 4:47 am

Good morning Tsaikos. So foggy, can’t see more than 100yds. Migration starts today with rest stop in Seattle. Good to see that 1st practice is just around the corner. Are the coaches having some difficulty in determining the active roster for practice?? That is great, but following years will be a headache. Yahoooooooo!!!!!!!

  27. whitey July 28, 2009 5:10 am

Welcome Vakeleo to our tsaiko family.

  28. Garret July 28, 2009 5:10 am

Just finished taking care of breakfast for the kids. I’m glad that SDSU finally has a contract agreement to use their football stadium this year. It looks like the city and school decided to add a ticket surcharge to increase revenue…but this might hurt SDSU’s attendance (which was pretty pitiful before this).

More than a year of protracted negotiations finally has produced a new lease for San Diego State to play football games at Qualcomm Stadium.

The City Council yesterday unanimously approved a new 10-year contract that will significantly increase stadium-related expenses for the Aztecs while guaranteeing the city a profit of about $15,000 per game. A $1 surcharge will be added to most SDSU tickets to help pay for it.

The lease had been subject to occasionally painstaking back-and-forth talks since SDSU’s last lease expired at the city-owned stadium in December 2007. The city said it had lost about $30,000 per game in recent years and refused to continue subsidizing the school’s struggling team, which hasn’t had a winning season since 1998.

Meanwhile, SDSU didn’t want to see its expenses significantly raised while economic conditions have gotten worse. Actual football attendance has dropped from an average of 28,336 in 2004 to 17,344 last season, according to turnstile counts. The university also faces severe budget cuts and unpaid furloughs for workers.

In the end, the city came out ahead by getting a deal that ensures SDSU will reimburse the city about $30,000 per game in direct game expenses (police, fire, trash, etc.) and pay a $1-per-ticket surcharge.

  29. Garret July 28, 2009 5:13 am

Looks like SDSU will pay a much higher rent to use the stadium now. I’m guessing that the 5-year opt-out clause could be important after the Chargers leave Qualcomm Stadium because the city plans to tear down the stadium.

Under the old lease, SDSU was paying $50,000 per game in rent. Under the new lease, SDSU will pay the city about $95,000, including the estimated $30,000 in additional expenses and about $15,000 from the added surcharge. Most tickets will include the surcharge except for student tickets and some others.

Either party can opt out of the deal with five years’ notice. After five years, the city also can renegotiate the rent if it doesn’t think it’s getting a good deal.

Schemmel said he liked the agreement despite the fact it would cost SDSU an additional $180,000 per year, not counting the added surcharge.

  30. Garret July 28, 2009 5:16 am

I have to finish my proposal in about 9 hours…be back on the bog after that.

  31. Ai-yah July 28, 2009 5:22 am

How come Ben Yee is not in charge of Na Koa anymore? did he retire?

Why are the boosters now funding the same position supposedly paying $100k? I understand a need to pay someone to run Na Koa, but $100k? that money can be better spent on the PLAYERS

  32. whitey July 28, 2009 5:32 am

Ai-yah, if this is true about Na Koa, then I will really have to rethink about my membership next year. I did not join a non-profit org at UH, so someone can make money. I don’t think anyone should be paid to run NaKoa as this is money for a specific reason, football, not for someone to become rich off of us.

  33. whitey July 28, 2009 5:39 am

Now you know why the non-profit orgs are having great difficulty getting money from the public. When times are hard, like now, why should we donate anything to them when they think of themselves first.

  34. vakeleo July 28, 2009 5:52 am

yeah , I’m Vaughn’s dad. tried to get to sleep but ended up doing laundry and stuff.Morning everyone. hope to make it to a few summer practices this year before the season starts. I was over a few times for the spring training and game. I like what the new olline coach has done with the line. Simplified the blocking and added more size! I seen some big olinemen out there! This should be a good year for the Wariors.

  35. Maverick July 28, 2009 5:59 am

    Morning gang!

ST, I’m having a Deja’ Vu moment with the Airport incident.
Didn’t this happen last season with stepping on someone else’s toes, causing them to give the “Obama stink eye”?

  36. 808 July 28, 2009 6:06 am

Ai-yah and whitey: Ben is retired but still involved with Na Koa. When planning for the future with Ben’s retirement on the horizon, the powers that be — notably RB — felt that Na Koa could be expanded and increase its fundraising level only by hiring someone to do the job. I can’t say for sure, but I’m quite certain that the salary for the position is not $100K. (It’s lower, not higher.) In support of the paid position, it was stated that the amount of funds raised by Na Koa needs to at least double. That might be hard to do in the current economic climate. Long term, the move may pay off.

  37. tom-warriornation July 28, 2009 6:11 am

aloha Vaughn’s dad & mahalo for the great information on our new O-line coach and the size of our O-line. It sounds so good! by the way, do you also post on Sportshawaii.com?

  43. d1島 July 28, 2009 6:36 am

    Great Morning All!

Maybe it was the same person as last time! 😯

JD’s voluntary pay cut won’t do anything to affect the school’s standing in the job market. UH is in the same (kind of) boat as other public institutions that are falling in the same tide. The rest of the schools with the big endowments that aren’t being affected so much by the economy are gonna be hard to compete with anyway.

  44. Slugger July 28, 2009 6:41 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Aloha, Vaughn’s Dad!

You guys talking about Alvin’s salary?

    Hola from Spain!

Happy belated birthdays to all I’ve missed. Welcome back bhf2. Missed you big guy. Congrats to David Veikune.

Trying to catch up on the blog. Fighting with da keed for computah time.

Still eating lots of guuud fuuud. Had octopus several times. Dis stuff is da best, tender, unlike the Japanese version of chewing gum… Lots of Serano ham and squid too. It’s cool here, weather-wise. I don’t think it gets above 80 very much, even in the middle of summer.

El profesor Kekoa – would like to have a discussion with you, the resident Tsai-ko European language expert, on the languages of the Iberian penisula when we next meet.

Leave Sat for Barcelona and Valencia. Heard it was 45 deg C in Barcelona last week. Hope it cools down to something bearable by the time we get there.

Miss you guys. Esme and out. whooosh.

  57. Jack Flash July 28, 2009 7:44 am

Instead of a paycut, wouldn’t it be wiser to just take a furlough day or 2? If it works out to the same percentage of pay given up, i’d rather have a day off than have to show up to work for less $$…

  59. madeinhawaii July 28, 2009 7:51 am

Whoa.. I didn’t know that all of Mac’s salary came out of UH. Wonder if the Athletic department (via Na Koa) still gets as much from the boosters as they did under JJ?

  60. Kazz (blkberry_storm) July 28, 2009 8:01 am

That’s an interesting view on the matter of JD taking the pay cut. My first instinct was to give JD some props for “leading” the way so Ill stand by that.

However I do agree with you on how it will, if it will, effect future coaching and department hires.

Also I too wonder if the athletic department will benefit from the savings on AD paycuts. They should right?

  61. Kazz (blkberry_storm) July 28, 2009 8:05 am

Will fall camp run through the end of August? I took three vacation days from Aug 24-26 and I’d like to catch practice.

  62. Stretch July 28, 2009 8:08 am

Someone just called 1420 and mentioned a video that has Cooley and Colt.

  63. jm2375 July 28, 2009 8:16 am

OK caught up with da blog.

Caution to all planning to travel to Europe in the future. We’ve been totally *unsuccessful* in cashing traveler’s cheques. Apparently, there’s too much fraud and the banks listed on AmEx’s website are refusing to do it. So, when I get back home, I’m watching the exchange rate and, if and when, it gets to a good rate, I’m going down to the AmEx office and cash dem stooopid traveler’s checks for Euros. grrrr. 👿 Is it the same way in the US with traveler’s checks? If so, why even bother anymore.

OK, sorry for the rant. Good thing almost every place takes credit cards.

BTW, the local brew, Estrella Galicia, is cheap, but pretty smoooooooth. Also found some fairly decent wines for less than 2 euros.

  64. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 8:22 am

Last year, I was the one giving the stink eye.
I got whacked in the head by a bag.

  65. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 8:29 am

    Re: paycut.
I was reacting to the the reaction of Shoji and Miano.
Of course, if asked, you’re going to say: “I’ll take the paycut.”
I just thought it was unfair that they were put in a position to either give up pay or appear greedy.
The one thing I’ve never understood about the state’s budget shortfall is how it occurred and what exactly is in the budget. Budgets are based on projections, right? So who missed the mark by hundreds of millions?
And it doesn’t seem as if cutting salaries is a long-term solution. I’m still in favor of either furloughs or deferring part of the pay (essentially lending money — salary — to the state).

  66. innocent observer July 28, 2009 8:31 am

A paycut would be better in the end. A furlough would mean a permanent loss of pay, whereas, a pay cut, because of their contracts, the loss could be made up in better times. You could say, that it would be a deferred payment.

  67. koakane™ July 28, 2009 8:34 am

  70. madeinhawaii July 28, 2009 8:47 am

They missed the mark when they had that 300 million in surplus a few years back… and now they’ve missed the mark in the opposite direction. Any bank would have gone belly-up.

There was an article – either on the Google News or maybe Rick Steves – that most places (US and Europe, and probably Asia) will take charge cards more readily than Travellers checks.

The shops generally have machines that take the cards, check its validity and prints out the charge are suppose to be more trustworthy than just taking a check and looking at the signature and maybe an ID.

    Kudos to the donors!

The major donors announced today are the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii and the GIFT Foundation (Giving Inspiration For Tomorrow). Hawaiian Airlines will be providing discounted airfare for teams traveling to state tournaments. HMSA is giving free air time.

    didn’t know HMSA had a TV/Radio station 🙄

very off-topic and will not be ssurprised to be smu’d, but it’s very disappointing that certain members of Congress will continue to prostitue themselves and refuse to accept that President Obama is an American born person

would they have done the same if he was white? have they ever questioned a white Demorcat on US citizenship?

They said people questioned McCain’s citizenship because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. They didn’t make as big a stink about it as Obama though. You will never please those hard core Republicans, even after the birth certificate was put on the internet. Just like those “pro-lifers” who kill the abortion doctors. Or maybe those “environmentalist” that use spray paint to paint cars.

Obama is in the hot seat for years to come. He is always going to be attacked from all sides (even some of the doubtful Dems like his own VP). We have this local boy makes good attitude about him and that makes it hard to see the reality of what he is doing at times. Time will tell.

  120. G (China) July 28, 2009 2:25 pm

    Regarding full time fund-raiser…

I think one of the reason why UH hasn’t seen more endowments is because they don’t have a full time fund-raiser. Capital campaigns can not be done by volunteers alone. Someone has to have vision and drive it. It is a wonder to me how they come this far with just volunteers. Then again Hawaii benefits to no end with so many charitable people, especially guys like Garret.

  121. G (China) July 28, 2009 2:41 pm

I do think there is a difference between an enforced pay cut (like what HA had to go through) and a volunteered pay cut. But the fact it is so publicized it seems that there is a sense that there is pressure to follow suit. In the end, I think you have to be driven by vision. It’s why Garret does what he does with a huge initial pay cut. However, since pay cut was voluntary, why make a big fuss in public domain. I know in hard times it can be difficult for so many families to see a cut when they need more.

In general, having a good budget and living within your means needs to be a standard. Americans can learn a lot about how Chinese save. I have seen a migrant worker live in such crummy conditions just so that they can save 70%-90% of the $150 they make a month. The money of course is then saved for their kid (which I personally don’t agree with). But if you extrapolate this on a national scale you can then see why they are the lenders to the world, let alone America.

  122. Hoohiki July 28, 2009 2:42 pm

wafan, Palin will not fade into the background any time soon. For one, she creates the headlines and loves the spotlight at the expense of her family.
No matter her IQ, she’s driven and will use her physical attributes to manipulate the men of politics to get what she wants. She WILL make a run for the presidency in 2012.

    Howzit everybody,

Looks like we will be in for another very exciting recruiting year with VJ Fehoko saying that we will be on his top 5 list once he shortens his list. I gotta believe that this is not just a token gesture and that Hawaii will have a pretty good chance at landing him. This will set a precedence and hopefully open the eyes of other recruits who are on the wall right now.

  134. kama krab July 28, 2009 3:53 pm

I gotta believe that with VJ Fehoko announcement we may have a chance with Micah Hatchie and the rest of the highly rated local players. It also looks like one of our early commets Kalen Freil (sp?) is moving up the star rating. He has just been upgraded to a three player by rivals.

  135. Da Punchbowl Kid July 28, 2009 4:34 pm

  137. Garret July 28, 2009 4:44 pm

I do agree with your point that the coaches being asked that question was unfair to them and they pretty much had to answer the question the way that they did. But that isn’t JD’s fault–weren’t they asked the question by Ferd or some other reporter?

I apologize if I offended anyone by mentioning the proposal that I was working on. I can see why someone would be upset if they thought I was talking about it to brag or something…but that really was not my intent! Why would it be a good thing to talk about having to work days and night for weeks on end without rest or pay? If my company wins it would be great and 4 people would get jobs, but the time spent on the proposal cannot be paid for by any of our grants so I’ve been the only one working without pay.

This deadline has consumed me for a month–I even worked on this stuff while I was in Hawaii! I’m sorry if I mentioned it too much on the blog…I tried limit the mentions, but today was a really long and tiring day and I wanted to explain why I wasn’t going to be on the blog in case anyone wanted to ask me something.

d1 is correct that UH Athletics would benefit is this proposal wins. This one is a big one and let us say it would be good for UH also.

  141. Garret July 28, 2009 5:00 pm

Congratulations to Adrian Klemm! It would be great for him to be an OL coach at the D-IA level and I’m sure that he’ll do a great job. JJ is lucky to have him.

Disturbing turn of events for Ingram and the Patriots. Could New England actually be thinking of signing a LB with the money they would have paid Ingram? New England had to put LB Crable on the physically unable to perform list and they might want another LB.

Also, any news with the Stryker Sulak tryout and if he is signed how does that affect Crable and the OLB situation?

As for Sulak, the interesting part to me is how this might tie in with long snapper Jake Ingram. It is unusual to me that a sixth-round pick like Ingram has not been signed at this point, and it makes me wonder if the team is thinking Sulak might be a better investment with that money. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but Ingram was drafted 198th overall, Sulak 199th. If Sulak is signed, I think it’s just another layer of depth and competition at outside linebacker/nickel rusher.

VJF – why did he transfer back to Farrington? – it would make UH 2010 recruiting class very attractive if he and the Waialua boys would commit to the Warriors.

anyone know Manley’s current situation? – will he take his time to see if any BCS teams offer before making a commitment?

JD should have hired Amemiya as one of his AD or some capacity to fundraise or market UH sports-he gets a lot done

  159. madeinhawaii July 28, 2009 7:09 pm

Keep that up and more people will seek residence in Las Vegas and list their properties in Hawaii as vacation rentals.

Kazz, Garret and A House maybe you should check the phone number you guys called, maybe you’re calling the same woman but she is on furlough, or she is not accepting any calls until summer practices start on thursday.

  161. Ralph July 28, 2009 7:14 pm

i’m surprised the HA listed only 3 million in losses noted for tax purposes, i figured Hawaii residents dropped more than 3 million for the Boyd group to spend so much on Hawaii marketing. Too many people with pride, refuse to list their losses on their income tax or afraid to tell their spouse how much they really loss.

  162. d1島 July 28, 2009 7:17 pm

That would be losses to write off against winnings. Unless you win over threshhold and have to fill out the 1099, who’s gonna admit to winnings?

(Because there already was politics discussed here today….)

    The White House announced today

The Recovery Act is providing $1 billion in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of law enforcement officers in all 50 states. The grants will be awarded to 1,046 agencies across the country, and will provide 100 percent of the salary and benefits for 4,699 officers for three years.

In light of recent “stupidly” acted out events and the questionable timing of this announcement aside, given that newly hired officers take a few years to be trained, how are these cops going to be paid after 3 years?

Since it is a weekday, we’re not going to go out tomorrow night. But with Faith in summer school and Mika in preschool, we’ll be able to have a lunch date…part celebration for the work being completed and mostly Anniversary celebration. The fish tacos are *really* good here, the view is nice, and we love seafood.

  172. Garret July 28, 2009 8:33 pm

    el guapo,

I guess things could be worse. The California Universities are really being hit hard, which could hurt their athletic teams in a lot of different ways…like APR hits because students cannot take the classes they need to graduate.

  173. Garret July 28, 2009 8:34 pm

Article about the challenges Pat Hill has at Fresno State this year. I didn’t realize that $360k of Hill’s $560k came from boosters.

Hill’s long-term future is just one of the team’s uncertainties heading into the start of fall camp Aug. 5. The Bulldogs have yet to name a starting quarterback, face a demanding nonconference schedule and could be without coaches at times during the season because of university-mandated furloughs to help close the state budget deficit.

Considering those issues, Hill said his contract is the least of his worries.

He said he and athletic director Thomas Boeh have not had a chance to meet about extending his contract after last season’s 7-6 record. Hill has two seasons left on the deal that pays him about $560,000 in base salary, only roughly $200,000 of which comes from the state. The rest is paid by the Fresno State Athletic Corp.

  174. Garret July 28, 2009 8:35 pm

The budget cutbacks will hit Fresno State (and SJSU) in a variety of ways:

With state finances in disarray, Hill said he doesn’t fully know how his team will be affected by the furloughs and other potential reductions.

Coaches could have to take off two days a month. He isn’t even sure whether he will have less money for equipment or other needs.

One off-field issue already has presented itself: class scheduling. Many players weren’t able to get the summer classes they wanted, Hill said, because of reductions in class offerings.

Hundreds of fall classes have been cut as well, and Hill said he hopes that doesn’t keep players from fulfilling graduation requirements or the program from meeting the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate standards. The Bulldogs scored 948 in the 2009 report, above average among Football Bowl Subdivision teams.

A bigger impact on the upcoming season itself will be a dip in practice time, as players struggle to schedule classes outside of their football commitments.

“If that means they have to miss practice at times, we have to be flexible in how we practice,” Hill said.

He put things into perspective by comparing the furloughs — the equivalent of about a 10% pay cut for the coaching staff — to layoffs people face across the country.

Man came home and discovered someone was robbing him…so he tackled him and held him down while talking to a 911 operator.

Thief in the Bay Area confessed to his priest that he robbed a Credit Union, turned over $1200 to the priest, and then left. The priest called the police and the Credit Union will get that money back (which may or may not be all that was stolen), but the bank robber has not been found.

Study found that the average text message user sends 3 texts per day, but people involved in extra-marital affairs send 9 texts per day to the person they are having an affair with.

    Hey, Garret.
I, for one, appreciate the personal side of your posts. It adds more dimension to know backstory of a poster.

  183. 22Tokyo July 28, 2009 9:37 pm

    Off topic…..

Any thoughts on the new law which disallows the write off of Vegas losses? My first thought is that some of our elected officials are doing the HF impersonation…

  184. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:39 pm

Aw, I love my neighbor. He’s a great guy. But I’m still puzzled about his perception of a lack of coverage. I’m pretty sure there’s been a football post every day.

I was going thru a list of Scholar-Athletes and noticed that a Northwest Conference school has a major called “Rhetoric and Media Studies”

    How ’bout that? 🙂

  186. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:44 pm

Hmmm. If they disallow the writeoff of gambling losses, then they shouldn’t make you claim the perks — free rooms — as income.

  187. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:45 pm

    Was that a rhetorical question?

  188. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:47 pm

So, I asked around, and it turns out that McClain still gets a sizable high-three retirement that won’t be impacted by his paycut.

I just want to know where all of the savings go, and who controls that account.

Ben Yee is still there, as a volunteer. And he still answers questions promptly.

So what’s the schedule for tom’w?

  193. d1島 July 28, 2009 9:51 pm

…and what’s the schmooze tally for today?

  194. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:53 pm

    There’s a breakfast at 7:30, which is in about 5 1/2 hours.
Then the commish gives his chat for an hour.
Then three coaches speak, half hour each.
    Then we interview some players.
    Then lunch.
Then three more coaches speak, half hour each.
    Then we interview some players.
Then I write up the stories and … go to Wendover.

  195. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:54 pm

The UH group speaks on Thursday.

Neat trick today by some businesses to get everyone in a giving mood…

    $400k to HHSAA….

    HA starts a giving collection…..

HHSAA Dir. gives $$$$$ to 2 N.I. schools and PCHS…..

UH FB HC states he’ll give a big contribution to HHSAA….

  197. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:55 pm

I got to chat with Kaepernick tonight.
In the past, the players would go out.
But only half the players are here, and there’s not much to do at night.

  198. d1島 July 28, 2009 9:56 pm

    Is Wendover near Wea-ever?

  199. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:56 pm

Lawrence Fan, the media relations director for San Jose State, made the 800-mile drive from the Bay Area. He stayed in a Nevada motel for nine hours, I think.

  200. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2009 9:58 pm

Is a football coach allowed to donate to HHSAA?
Would that be considered a recruiting perk since student-athletes would benefit?

  201. d1島 July 28, 2009 9:59 pm

    Get some shut eye.

Hey, sounds like a good idea.

Cool, ST- I like Kaepernick. I was amazing to see the giraffe carry his whole team across the field a couple years ago. Heart of a lion!

Eh! Hula stuff all day. Tiring but fun.

I think JD taking a 7% cut is a great thing for him to do. The UH President already said he & his execs are taking cuts. I once offered to give my COL increase to my staff, but my director said nyet. Bureaucracy rules.

    K, night!

  209. Don Weir July 29, 2009 8:27 am

    Don Weir
I am the Executive Director of Na Koa and was hired on 03/01/2009. I came out retirement to give back to the school and program that provided me an opportunity to play football and receive my degree.
My salary is a little more than 1/2 of that which is quoted in this blog including benefits.
I am an Ali’i member of Na Koa in terms of donation and I am starting a Na Koa endowment on August 30, 2009 as part of my vision of sustainable support for Na Koa Football Club.
Phone messages on the office phone are answered the same day (if possible) and on the cell phone within 4 hours. E-mails are answered the same day. This correspondence/communication timeline started on 03/01/2009.
The website will be pulled down and an ‘under construction’ sheet will take its place as the website had 3 year old information on it.
Ben Yee is my mentor and my friend for as many years as Na Koa has been in existence. He is invaluable in helping Na Koa streamline its operations, use General Accounting Principles in its fiscal responsibilities, and develop those connections to Warrior Football supporters, the University of Hawai’i Athletics Department, and the University of Hawai’i Foundation.
My goals are to help Warrior Football win the conference every year, win a bowl game every year, place UH Football into the top 25 Division 1 teams every year, and to graduate every senior UH Football player.

I look forward to hearing from all Warrior Football supporters. Contact me if you have concerns, ideas, or just want to talk story about UH football.

My e-mail signature and business cards all list:
