Iceman gets futbol opportunity

Former UH placekicker Dan “Iceman” Kelly has tryouts planned with Chivas USA and the L.A. Galaxy of Major League Soccer.
Kelly was a decorated goalie until deciding to pursue a football career.
For now, he is putting his football aspirations on hold to focus on soccer. He also coaches a youth team.
Even at UH, Kelly kept busy during the football offseason by playing soccer.

    Pomai,

You asked about salaries in the MLS, so I found this link that gives all of their salaries. If you look at the goalies, the starting goalie for Chivas makes $80k (and will be basically impossible for Kelly to beat out right away) and the two backup goalies make $17.9 and $12.9k.

  9. Garret January 31, 2009 5:59 am

Oops, I think that was the salaries for Chicago. If CHV is Chivas then the goalies make $104k, $33k, and $12.9k.

  10. Garret January 31, 2009 6:00 am

Another goalie made $50k. Anyway, this gives an idea of the range of salaries.

  11. Stretch January 31, 2009 6:07 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I hope that the Iceman is successful in whatever he chooses.

Article about the first Australian in the Super Bowl mentions UH.

Ben Graham will break a (Great) Barrier (Reef) tomorrow when he becomes the first Australian to play in a Super Bowl.

Dallas punter Matt McBriar last year became the first Aussie in the Pro Bowl — although he arrived to the NFL via a different route, college football at Hawaii.

Feature article and video with Bess!

“The fastest way to get on a field for a rookie is playing special teams, you know, and trying to make an impact as soon as possible as fast as you can,” Bess said.

The former UH star made 54 catches on the season, which is the second most in NFL history for an undrafted rookie behind Wayne Chrebet.

“It was weird, the media would come into our locker room and they would tell me, ‘man you’re such and such, you have this many catches.’ Throughout the whole year, it didn’t really bother me. It still hasn’t hit me yet,” Bess said.

  14. Garret January 31, 2009 6:13 am

This Mock draft guy has Veikune drafted by the Broncos in the 3rd round.

On Day 2 of the draft, the Broncos will have seven picks. With one of those seven picks, I expect Denver to stick with the Samoan “theme”, and select Hawaii pass rush specialist David Veikune.

In my latest mock draft, I have Denver taking Veikune in the third round. That may be a reach, but this guy has an intensity like you will find only in players such as Troy Polamalu. His motor never stops, and he could be a perfect fit for an edge rusher in the 3-4 defense.

Good luck on the Goteborg-bacon concoction. If you are confronted
with any problems like dryness, taste, etc.,let me know.

    Helpful hints:
Best BBQ sauce on store shelf: Bull’s eye (Texas-style)
Best BBQ rub on store shelf: none. All store bought rubs
are 60%-70% salt. Make your own. (bacon already salty)

    IT COMES IN 3’s!!!

AWESOME volleyball match last night! The game started out “slow” but it felt like “old” times at mens volleyball during set 4 and 5 again at the Stanley!!!

Again, the pep band MAKES a HUGE difference.

But a NEW streak has started with THREE wins… Sometimes it just takes ANY kind of win to get it started. First with the Bows at LaTech, then the Wahine BBall Bows at Utah State, then the Warriors at home.

    LET’S KEEP IT GOING!!!!

so, yesterday after a rare movie we went to costco for our weekly reload. the day’s special were some us prime spencer’s. at 8.99 lb it was yelling out to me, “eat me! eat me!”.

some how a tray lands in my cart. needless to say, was cooked to perfection by the “iron chef hibachi” aka #1 son. was soooo ono and melt in the mouth. seasoned with some ws sauce, hawn salt, garlic powder, and fresh cracked peppers. served with saute’ sweet onions.

    Howzit Kazz-

’bout your C&K question: I used to work at KGMB. Back in ’98 KGMB filmed a C&K special in their studio. Producers asked the staff to invite friends & family to be in the studio audience. Me & ‘sports volunteered.

Apparently from that shoot, C&K clipped a portion and stuck it into their Anniversary vid that plays on OC16. Just so happen that little clip get me and ‘Sports in ‘um.

Two weeks ago Kekaula saw the vid and made a comment to ST he saw “addahknowjoe” (on his 108-inch LCD flat screen HD Hi-Def with Bose Lifestyle 48 Home Entertainment System) tearing up while listening to C&K.

I told ST, “NO WAY! That was all done with CG!”

stupid media and the anti-run and shoot bias. look how many people loved all the passing QBs and systems this year. fools.

  71. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 12:09 pm

    Good afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Glad to hear Kelly is persuing soccer. His last year probably ruined his chances at the NFL, too bad.

The pay in the US Soccer leagues is quite miniscule, compared to almost anywhere else in the world. Most players play for the love of the game here and the small chance to play in Europe.

Overall their payroll structure goes about 80 % to the top 20 % of players, the socalled stars, the balance is divided among the rest. In the Bundes Liga, for example, even the lowest paid players get about 4-500,000 $, playing year ’round.

There is a lot of talent in the US, but until the mainstream will accept soccer as a major sport, not much will change.

The US National team is actually quite good, but what they’re always lacking is creativity in “the box” and pure strikers. Defensively they can play with most teams.

A great showing in the next world cup might help matters, but a quick knock out again and what little inroads have been made will quickly evaporate.

  72. Rob25 January 31, 2009 12:11 pm

    You go c_c!!

Hopefully Hawaii sports has turned the corner, those three wins were a great booster shot in the arm.

Let’s keep going with this trend, please?

  74. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 12:24 pm

I hope B.J.Penn wins his fight, just because he’s local, but it’s not really my cup of tea. It’s a little too primal for me, makes me feel that I’m in a 2000 year time warp, back in the Roman Colosseum.

Even though we’ve been to the moon and back a few times, we haven’t changed all that much. We still love our arenas and plenty of the old instincts are still hanging around our DNA, lol.

  75. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 12:33 pm

Hey, everybody ran away? I took a shower this morning.

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid January 31, 2009 12:38 pm

  77. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 12:41 pm

    Hi, DPK,

I would watch it for free ( I have some old DNA too, lol) and only because it’s BJ, but I only pay for Warrior games.

  78. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 12:53 pm

Well, since the WB is apparently hibernating a little, I might as well go Super Bowl shopping.

My wife is making Kalua Pig. She found a receipe awile back that tastes almost like the real thing. She’s sending me out to fill her list, it’s too cold for her (46 F).

We’re having a cold snap right now, but the Minnesota, Michigan and Canadien people are still running around in shorts and T-shirts, while I look like I’m going skiing.

I think it’s kind of amusing that the band, no matter what, keeps chanting “Let’s Go Bows!”
    Same with the fans.
It’s like the nickname that wouldn’t die.

Trivia question: Joe Strotman, last night’s semi-hero, is dating the daughter of which former UH great?

  81. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 1:20 pm

    Tsai-Meister,

What counts as a click on the WB blog? If I refresh the page, is that counted as a click?

  82. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 1:23 pm

The “Bows” nick name will not die, as long as there are those various Rainbow parts remaining with some of our sports teams. It needs to be streamlined and then maybe in 10 years….

  83. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 1:24 pm

    O.k. then, see ya laterz.

  84. Garret January 31, 2009 2:02 pm

    FloridaTed,

The big thing for revenue is unique visitors…so, refreshing will not boost that number. The clicks or hits are nice for stats, but advertisers know how to look at unique visitors and other measures (things like how long someone spends on a website).

    #80 Trivia Question.
    A: Gerald Ako, Ambree’s dad.
    My guess.

  86. Garret January 31, 2009 2:06 pm

It is amazing that *one* high school in Florida could have more D-IA football prospects than the *entire* state of Wisconsin!

Talking to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) football coach George Smith this week, he told me he had 10 players from his team who already had given oral commitments to colleges and a couple more expected before the Feb. 4 signing day.

The news that Homestead linebacker Ben Gardner had committed to Stanford now makes 12 players in the entire state of Wisconsin who have committed to Football Bowls Subdivision schools (not counting walk-ons).

That’s right, when it’s all said and done, one team from Florida could have about the same number of FBS recruits as all of Wisconsin.

  87. Garret January 31, 2009 2:08 pm

Some Wisconsin fans aren’t too happy with how Wisconsin has been recruiting so many players from Florida…but it sounds like they pretty much have to go out of state for players.

The opinion of UW fans seems mixed on the Badgers’ recruiting emphasis in Florida. The commitment this week of Southward gives the Badgers three players from Florida. Defensive end David Gilbert is a four-star (Rivals) recruit from Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Fla.

Whatever you think of the Badgers’ Florida recruiting efforts, there’s no denying, that’s where the players are.

No major flooding of residential areas this year — yet. We are about halfway through Winter. As you recall, Spring is usually the worst time for floods along the rivers and flats.

Hoping your boss is feeling a lot better today!

  90. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:20 pm

Looks like everybody is out Super Bowl Party shopping. Just got back myself.

It almost has the feel of a National Holiday. In contrast to the World Cup, where everything happens on the streets and in Bars, the Superbowl seems to be more of a family and friends type of affair. I like that a lot better, actually.

    Garret,

Thanks for the info. Is there anything you don’t know? Lol. So, refreshing wouldn’t do anything.

  91. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:27 pm

In the Publix Supermarket I go to, the cash registers looked like the Wagon Trains starting line, just just before the Land Rush west.

Most shopping carts piled a yard high.

  92. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:33 pm

In principal, since the Warriors are not playing in the Super Bowl, I’m rooting for Arizona, simply because I’m always for the underdog.

Considering that 75 % of the planets population is in the underdog category, makes this an easy choice. Other than that, I’ve no feelings for either Pittsburg or Phoenix, but I do hope for a great game.

  94. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:36 pm

Tampa is going a little nuts right now, with Parties in every bar. People are renting their houses for the week for up to $20,000.-. Nice to know there are still people who actually can afford that.

  95. bighilofan2 January 31, 2009 3:38 pm

i also get da feeling that Jeordan gonna be a super player. i would if i wuz given a second chance at life and I had his talent. let him make himself proud, and show us who he is and who he is growing up to become. Go Hanohano!

    Go Warriors!

  96. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:39 pm

    Hi, bhf2,

Finally get some help to push this thing over 100.

  97. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:42 pm

I hope for all the local boys to become big corner stones for our program. This would help a lot with future recruiting. To be highly respected in your own community should always be a big plus.

  98. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:45 pm

Hit and run? Now I’m lonely again.

  99. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:45 pm

This is spooky. Is this thing on?

  100. jm2375 January 31, 2009 3:47 pm

    Howzit bhf2 and FT!

Talked to someone from Phoenix the other day. He just got season tix this year. He said he kept looking out his window wondering when it was gonna freeze over. 😀 He said about 50K people were still in the stands about an hour after the NFC championship game.

  101. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:48 pm

    O.k. then, 100.

My invisible suit is working. Have to talk to Garret about that.

See you laterz then, this is getting too lonely.

  102. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 3:58 pm

    jm2375,

    Sneeky you, yah? Lol.

    But thanks for the help.

I can understand the people of Phoenix. 60 years of futility finally over. I’m actually very happy for them. Still remember the von Crappen years, so we know how they feel right now. That’s the major reason I’m rooting for them. Pittsburg already has 5 SB’s.

  103. Momo January 31, 2009 4:00 pm

Supper vb game. Bring back memories of the old days. Did you notice that # 5 played no minutes and #24 played only 1 minutes in the last BB game. I guess that was what Nash was refering to when he said those that does not buy into the system will be set down..

  104. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 4:20 pm

    Momo,

They seem to have their number, hope they can do it again tonight.

  105. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 4:23 pm

Glad to see that Nash is getting a bit tougher, maybe that’s what they need.

  106. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 4:26 pm

By the way, if Kelly is getting a try out with the Galaxy and Chivas, he must have a pretty good reputation in the soccer world. They don’t try out just anybody for the heck of it.

  107. warriorfanny January 31, 2009 4:30 pm

    BHF2

Understand that the Ching/Cooke Field dedication is going to be scheduled next week or the week after.

    Maybe JD will invite us!

  110. Jason January 31, 2009 4:46 pm

I was at a RFL meeting today, and I was told that the dedication will be Monday.

Among other things, I learned that the athletic department forgoes a hefty rental fee in order to allow RFL to go on. Many thanks to Jim Donovan for continuing this practice.

Thankfully, someone clarified that there is, at no point, to be any stakes driven into the turf when setting up tents. That would almost be on par with mowing the turf down … 😀

  111. Jason January 31, 2009 4:54 pm

Speaking of Relay for Life, thank you to those that have already donated or have pledged to donate. So far, eight people have donated a total of $365.00! And several others have pledged varying amounts as well. You can see their names by going to my RFL page. Thank to everyone who has decided to give so generously to the American Cancer Society for this cause. Of course, my personal goal is $2,500, so there’s quite a ways to go …

Periodically, I’ll be posting quick reminders asking for donations. You can read a request letter that I wrote on my Web site:

    http://www.deep-mirrors.org/jason/relay.html

That letter also contains a link to where you can donate online, or print out a form to mail in your check or money order.

I think sjmacro said it best: Lend your support in spirit or by donation to Jason or any of the student/athlete teams. This is a “yes we can” event that benefits our community. So please consider helping. Even if it’s only a small amount — if 125 people donated $20, that would meet my goal. I am sure that there are at least that many people who lurk, if not more. Please think about any family members or friends who have been affected by cancer, and consider giving so that someday, nobody will ever have to hear such a dreaded diagnosis again. Thank you!

  148. al ™ January 31, 2009 8:12 pm

its not easy moving up in weight class as history has dictated over the years in any kind of fight.

much heart being displayed by the local boy.
    no shame.

    Who Tepa???

Wow BJ looked like punching bag. It was too painful to watch.

  154. Garret January 31, 2009 10:24 pm

Norm Chow sure is flying all over the place…with several recruits in Hawaii being visited by him.

The coaching staff has been out all over the country. Last week alone, offensive coordinator Norm Chow was in Hawaii to visit with five-star linebacker Manti Te’o; Utah to make a final pitch to top offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo; then back in Hawaii to speak with offensive lineman Stan Hasiak.

  155. Garret January 31, 2009 10:25 pm

Article about grayshirting discusses how Texas, Texas Tech, and UH used it in past years.

SMU coach June Jones estimated he had a handful of grayshirts on his 2007 Hawaii team that crashed the Bowl Championship Series.

“Depending on the situation, it’s almost always in the best interest of the athlete,” Jones said. “It happens for different reasons. At Hawaii, it was an overabundance at a certain position.”

While Jones believes quarterback development can be aided by grayshirting, the position that probably benefits most is the offensive line. Players use the time to prepare and mature for what they’ll face in college. Think of it as a boys-to-men transformation.

  156. not far away anymore January 31, 2009 10:26 pm

Congrats to the Men’s VB team for their second straight win over the #2 team in the country.

  157. Garret January 31, 2009 10:27 pm

I guess Billy Ray is UH’s first greenshirt. Texas regularly gets these types of recruits–they have 5 this year.

    GREENSHIRT

An even newer term than grayshirt that describes a player who enrolls a semester early to participate in spring practice.

  158. Garret January 31, 2009 10:29 pm

I remember talking about Junior Days and how other schools use them for years, both on and off this blog. JJ never had one at UH and I always wanted UH to have them…hard for me to believe that he’s had a Junior Day for 2010 recruits before the 2009 recruits even had their NLI day!

Saturday brought one of the most successful junior day’s in SMU’s recent history. With well over 100 2010 prospects in attendance, find out which top recruits made it to the Hilltop! Safety Eddrick Loften was one of several individuals that were there who already hold official offers.

  159. Pauoa Boy January 31, 2009 10:31 pm

BJ Penn got rocked tonight…looked slow, sluggish and overpowered by St. Pierre. Maybe Penn should stick to 155 weight class, he was clearly outmatched the whole fight.

  160. Garret January 31, 2009 10:31 pm

Free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want the off-topic stuff.

Spinner sharks migrate close to the Florida shore this time of year…and they have been jumping up out of the water a few feet from where people are surfing!

  161. Garret January 31, 2009 10:31 pm

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement was passed after a lot of publicity last year but seems horribly flawed! The law is supposed to come into effect on February 10 and could kill all thrift stores and craft stores…and basically outlaws children’s books in bookstores and libraries! They have a choice of banning children from libraries or removing all children’s books (which would keep children out of the library).

  162. FloridaTed January 31, 2009 10:31 pm

Great win by the VB team. Only in VB can you be that highly ranked with a losing record. I hope they have it turned around now.

The BB team sorely needs a dependable 3 point shooter. That was the difference tonight.

  163. Da Punchbowl Kid January 31, 2009 10:32 pm

  164. Garret January 31, 2009 10:32 pm

Article about “love potions” mentions how marriage counselors might administer oxytocin (via a nasal spray) in the future as a part of marital therapy that would help prevent couples from divorcing. They also seem to have an “anti-love potion” (oxytocin blocker) that would prevent someone from falling in love.

No offense to Lisa Maa, but I miss Chris McLachlin. Hope he’s back for the next game.

I remember when hackers were going after MSN e-mail accounts and got RainbowCliff among others. Now, they are going after Facebook…I know that a lot of people here have Facebook accounts and I hope they make their passwords hard to guess because the hackers are trying to steal Facebook accounts now.

Instead of hacking into msn e-mail accounts, now the scammers are hacking Facebook accounts and getting the “friends” of the Facebook owner to send money to fake addresses, claiming that the Facebook owner was robbed and needs money to return home.

  172. Garret January 31, 2009 10:40 pm

I didn’t realize the blog was down for so long…I got online and checked the blog and it was down, but 5 minutes later it was back up. please info midori7 that scoring the perimeter of goteborg sausage actually is a detriment when making the musubi version. frying the slice sausage makes it in to a concave disk. when lends towards making the musubi. you know it has a cupping effect much like a women’s (ahem) undergarment.

also, al’s style is with a mini dollop of best foods mayo. i should trademark that one huh? goteborg musubi al’s style™

Ralph – I believe the tekkies decided to do maintenance on the blogs. Dunno why they couldn’t have waited till 2 am. Oh wait, that may have incurred the wrath of pride. 😀

  201. al™ January 31, 2009 11:49 pm

i keep thinking that stephanie lum’s days are numbered here on the islands. not because a team will pick her up as “vili” type mascot.

i just think that she is bringing her ‘a’ game with her nightly newscasts and her looks is definitely an attribute that some larger market or syndicated network will soon offer her a bigtime contract.

  202. al™ January 31, 2009 11:50 pm

ralph….the blog is preparing for the surprise.

  210. al™ February 1, 2009 12:50 am

    lights out time.

before i do one last parting shot. vball looked good. too bad it has taken this long to settle in on a lineup. the early version was too inexperienced i like this one a little better. grgas has upped his game. enter dyer and carney is the man, the leader of the pack.

but, the straw that stirs this drink is ric cervantes. his quickness is unsurpassed. normally the libero goes unnoticed except for their off color uniform, but, he continues to make so many plays it is a pleasure to see him flying all over the court.

eh. whitey, take the cards plus pts.

  211. JGM February 1, 2009 2:24 am

    test

  212. Garret February 1, 2009 5:25 am

    Momo,

It would be great to see you in San Diego more! You folks have to take care of your Hawaii grandchildren so I think it has been over a year since your last visit here (not counting the day after the cruise). At least we have seen you folks in Hawaii, Vegas, and the cruise.

It is too bad about your job…I don’t know what will happen to the kids you teach and who will be able to take over.

  213. bighilofan2 February 1, 2009 5:26 am

Good morning from Monterey, CA, Tsaikos…

Best of luck to Dan in the soccer tryouts, and thanks, Iceman, for clutch kicks in some of the most memorable wins in UH history!

  215. bighilofan2 February 1, 2009 5:47 am

I echo 99club’s sentiments Dan Kelly.

best of luck in life to you and your family.

  216. bighilofan2 February 1, 2009 5:51 am

supposedly the fb season tix sale starts this week.

  217. 99club February 1, 2009 5:54 am

They are sticking it to Arizona backers at the sportsbooks in Laughlin, NV. 125 to win a 100 if you took the points. Ouch!

Travis Laboy is listed as questionable with the bicep injury.

  218. wafan February 1, 2009 5:59 am

    A super morning to everyone!

I hope you are all ready for the days festivities — mayo, oysters, adult refreshments, and best not to know what it used to be meats. Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  228. 808ike February 1, 2009 8:00 am

    A-House,

Can’t picture in my mind Mrs. A-House voodooing opponent’s
serve. She probably learned it from Midori 7. Nice to know she
still has a lot of spunk in her.

  229. d1島 February 1, 2009 8:04 am

    High Life!

  230. 808ike February 1, 2009 8:11 am

    Al,

    RE: Boss’ BBQ sauce.
A long time ago, went to a cookout. BBQ ribs on the menu. The BBQ
sauce tasted like a hybrid. Asked about the sauce and the guy showed
me a bottle of BBQ sauce bought from the store. All I can remember
is the brand name begins with the letter “B”. Maybe that was Boss’,
    maybe another brand.

  231. g-nalo February 1, 2009 8:31 am

good morning and happy superbowl Sunday!

hope its a good game and better yet…..hope everyone enjoys the day.

recruiting is the lifeblood as we all know, but can’t get’em all. at least we know U of Hawaii has made improvements in budgeting and style of recruiting.

  232. 808ike February 1, 2009 8:45 am

    Al,

Don’t know a lot about store-bought BBQ sauces. The only time I have
the opportunity to taste it, is when someone uses it at a cookout. The
closest store-bought BBQ sauce to the real deal is Bull’s eye. BBQ
rubs are a lot simpler vs homemade. Store ones are really salty.

    esme out!!

  233. LizKauai (iPhone) February 1, 2009 8:56 am

    Greetings from the Ceded Lands!

Aunty Diana sends her best to errybody. Had a slight adjustment to her meds, and fighting infection and that throbbing boom-shaka-lacka pain.

She has her Steelers shirt on and is cheering for the Cards…Go Figure!
