Earlier start for UH's WAC home games

In a decision inspired by Fresno State coach Pat Hill’s suggestion, UH’s home games against WAC opponents will now start at 5 p.m. Please adjust your tailgate schedules.

For the Warriors, the treatment might be worse than the injury.
UH head coach Greg McMackin does not allow ailing players to spend practices in the training room. Instead, they are required to go through grueling exercises, such as sit-ups while weighted down by a 50-pound bar or walking 220-yard laps while carrying 40-pound sandbags overhead.
Yesterday, it was noted that sit-ups might aggravate cornerback Tank Hopkins’  hip flexor. Instead, he was required to do push-ups.
As a result, the most physically fit players might be the ones with sprained ankles or tight hamstrings.

With the help of this platform, the linemen go through a drill that ensures they will stay low on their run-blocks:

After practice, about 30 bags of ice are loaded into a wading pool. As you can see, the ice melts quickly:

Is UH one of the only football programs that employs a hydration specialist?

It’s interesting to see the punters and kickers go through tackling drills. But that’s part of special teams coordinator Chris Tormey’s plan to turn them into emergency safeties on punts and kickoffs.

COMMENTS

  1. Hiya!

  2. Warriors- stronger, faster, healthier!
    HiHo!

  3. And well- hydrated…

    Mahalo, ST!

  4. Bulla August 13, 2009 6:53 am

    interesting strategy for ‘injured’ players

  5. Bulla August 13, 2009 6:54 am

thanks for the heads up….some schools are closing in kauai, hanalei flooded again 🙁

  6. Long Time UH Fan August 13, 2009 6:54 am

I used to be a hydration specialitst back in high school…well, sort of …I was the hydration facilitator back in the day…I think it was called water boy back then ..

Good morning Warrior Nation and Tsaikos!

  7. Bulla August 13, 2009 6:55 am

the boss and i decided to go in later today, the 0530 am to 630 pm days get to me real quick. with that being said, now the traffic in town is all blocked off because of a gas leak.

the irony is that the ‘gas’ leak started in a state building, close to the state capitol….is that ironic or realistic in finding a GAS leak, just asking….sorry Jamie, not you, the higher ups……

  8. Bulla August 13, 2009 6:56 am

    ltuh

that’s some mighty fine H2O that you had there, as adam sandler said in the classic movie, ‘Waterboy’…..funny 🙂

  9. Bulla August 13, 2009 6:58 am

been watching the blog and just want to say, we must be pretty hospitable to let people come in, drop their opala, make all huhu, and then leave…what’s up with that?

it’s ok, gotta kill them with kindness, we know that…..

  10. Long Time UH Fan August 13, 2009 6:58 am

    Howzit Bulla,

🙂 yup, good ole H2O from Kalihi Valley… How’s The Beast doing these days? I hope he has a great outstanding year at WSU.

  11. SailorBlue August 13, 2009 6:59 am

    Morning Tsaioko nation. Top 10…Wahooo…

  12. SailorBlue August 13, 2009 7:01 am

  13. lava August 13, 2009 7:06 am

Ice the family jewels — who said footballers don’t sacrifice?

  14. Maverick August 13, 2009 7:10 am

    Today is COLT DAY!
    Let the game begin.

    Howzit to the gang.

    Bulla, how’s Jr. doing?

  15. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:10 am

    LTUH

mahalo for asking, ‘the beast’ is having a great fall camp with all his team mates. the other recruits from hawaii are holding their own, Adam White, Tytan Timoteo, Kela Marciel, Thompson from Wailua, Jeremiah from Aiea, Vichon from Kaiser HS, they are all doing good.

‘the beast’ is blessed to be a starter and the Wildcats open up with the University of Wyoming followed by Colorado State. it’ll be a good indicator of where the team is at in their 2 non conference games. he trained really hard over the summer, dropped to 250 lbs and has now bulked up with ‘good weight’ to 270 lbs. the training paid off, he has 1 of the strength records (1300 lb. leg press) and is 2nd on the power clean with a 365 lbs. at WSU

UH is going to have a great season with the new coaches bringing in a new ‘flavor’ to the team. i like how Shaw and Tormey focus on details and basics….old school, but proven.

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS

  16. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:13 am

love the wading pools converted to life size ice buckets…..inflamation, the enemy of every athlete

  17. whitey August 13, 2009 7:13 am

bulla, you more fast than superman when it comes to catching the ha headlines “Gas leak from State Capitol”!!!! hahahahahahahhaaaaaa. They leak more than gas and sometimes hard to differentiate between opala and them. gulp, gulp, ok, choking

  18. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:13 am

    Maverick

how’s things in your neck of the woods? long time…..

  19. whitey August 13, 2009 7:14 am

  20. bighilofan2 August 13, 2009 7:14 am

how did dat comment awaiting moderation get on dare?

muss be one compliance guy lurking. 😆

  21. addahknowjoe August 13, 2009 7:15 am

    Gmornin’ gang!

Good to see McMac’s approach to idle players: There are other parts that can workout while an injured part heals.

Hey gang- get out there and have a good, solid, productive, fun filled, day after hump day!

  22. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:15 am

    whitey,

i was just thinking that the big pond outside the capitol always had a lot of ‘sludge’ ewwwwwwwwwwwwww, and the tilapias inside………you can take Bunda out of Wahiawa, but you cannot take Wahiawa out of Bunda….

just joking Bobby, your brother Paul could never be as good of a golfer as you, haha…..

  23. bighilofan2 August 13, 2009 7:16 am

    whitey,

going come back Maui, and we go try anudda place. 😀

  24. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:16 am

ST or anyone else at practice,

do they have the stationary bikes on the sidelines also, or ellipticals? that is standard at a lot of NFL and college practices…..keeps the blood flowing

  25. whitey August 13, 2009 7:17 am

ok, time to put on the sunblock for my friend sunshine is out in full force, then to my favorite place, Jack’s Inn. get game today, so got to get the opu in shape for some biru. hope my spacecraft gps is set correctly so i go home after the game and not to the dark side. see you later gang.

  26. bighilofan2 August 13, 2009 7:17 am

    Ajoe,

good morning good morning. you go make a great productive day.

    hi ho gotta go.

    esme wooossssssssshhhhhhhhhhh>>>>>>>>>>>

  27. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:18 am

    a-joe,

talking about humps, you seen josh lately, he went MIA and Punchbowl no more funds to send out the search team…… 🙁

  28. whitey August 13, 2009 7:18 am

bhf2, you are always welcome on maui and look forward to seeing you come “home” again.

  29. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:19 am

    whitey,

go get a hole in one, and if cannot, put 2 holes in one if can, that could be a benefit from the dark side, not saying just playing…..

if you go to the dark side, take da flashlight, that’s why they call it the FLASH – light, haha, flash of brilliance?

  30. whitey August 13, 2009 7:20 am

morning a-joe. this is lump day cause either i going give sum lumpings or i going get sum lumpings on the course. hahahahaaaaa

  31. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:21 am

    ok,

so i’ll make up for my lost time on the blog in 2 hours, haha. i like the drill for the Olinemen, osmosis, if they stand up to fast, BANG, it sinks in, literally to their head…..it will sink in both mentally and physically, it is their choice 🙂

  32. whitey August 13, 2009 7:21 am

bradda bulla, you on a roll, but i am rolling off the chair and got to get my arse rolling. spock you (sound familiar). beam me up scotty!!!

  33. bighilofan2 August 13, 2009 7:21 am

    jus playing.

    gotta go now. 😀

    have a great day whitey.

  34. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2009 7:22 am

They have one bicycle, but it’s not very good.
In case anyone is wondering. The first pic is of Aaron Brown and Paipai Falemalu.
The guy with the long hair is Tank Hopkins.

  35. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2009 7:23 am

The first guy in the pool is Jayson Rego.
The other two guys are Raphael Ieru and Ray Hisatake.

  36. Stretch August 13, 2009 7:26 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

whitey – don’t know who you are trying to fool…. hahahah

wf2 – since I know you are lurking, I hope you can make it to practice this morning and give me some insight to what UH should be doing to be a top Div I team. you have great knowledge of the game and I am just a rookie. thanks.

  37. Maverick August 13, 2009 7:32 am

The Redskins game will be Online thru the Channelsurfing.com site today for all of us without the proper tv channel.

Bulla- Plenty of coqui frogs in our neck of the woods now. thx for asking.
during the offseason, my work hours expand, ‘cuz in two more weeks my attention span for CFB is undeniable.
I see Weber St opens @ Wyoming, then Colo. St. interesting.

  38. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:36 am

    maverick

should be real interesting for those ‘Cats, it will be a GREAT indicator of where the team is at. with the offense returning, the D has to keep opponents under 20 points per game, and as chris berman would say…’…..they …… could …….go…… all………the……….way………..” :):)

    haha, we shall see………..

  39. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:38 am

    Maverick,

one last comment then gotta roll, the beast was selected to the Big Sky Pre Season All Conference Team as a sophomore…..so he has to bring the A-Z game, every snap, every play….808 represent. 🙂

  40. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2009 7:39 am

    Stretch:
    School is in session.

  41. Bulla August 13, 2009 7:41 am

    ST
i think that the cardio would be even a greater concern for coaches regarding the players….hmmmm, they know what they’re doing. i’ll ask Stretch, he’s a rookie, but a smart rookie i think.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid August 13, 2009 7:44 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Great pics Mr. Tsai! We love the info through images approach.

That wading pool looks like the kind that bulla used to use in his days a high diving dare-devil belly flop king.

Do the guys actually get into the pool when its filled with ice?

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid August 13, 2009 7:47 am

    Stretch-

Make sure you take notes so you can share with the rest of us. Don’t forget, I’m even dumber than you.

  44. Bulla August 13, 2009 8:01 am

    dpk,

wow, what memories, thanks for the flashback to those days. better than that was when you used to impersonate the flying donkey, that costume never came off in all of those jumps….great job, and i believe in duct tape, forget the ducts, we can use them for all animals including the donkeys 🙂

  45. Garret August 13, 2009 8:02 am

Interesting to see what the injured players do during practices.

I like that platform–it seems like a great example of Gordy Shaw using his extensive experience in teaching run-blocking to benefit UH’s OL.

  46. Garret August 13, 2009 8:05 am

Speculation is that Washington is interested in Michael Vick.

Yesterday, it was Vick and the Bears when he was spotted in Chicago … today it’s the Vick and the Redskins (again) because the NFL online shop has a Redskins jersey with the number 0 and Vick’s last name on the back. Vick’s from Newport News, went to Virginia Tech, Daniel Snyder isn’t thrilled with QB Jason Campbell, and the owner has always given off the impression that he’s a ‘name’ guy who tends toward the flashy. Should make for an exciting day on DC talk radio … even though the team has already denied any interest.

  47. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 8:06 am

    kazz,
thanks for the ST (special teams, not Stephen Tsai) info

  48. Slugger August 13, 2009 8:07 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

So, that’s why there was a Hawaii Ice truck backing up to the Cooke/Ching field access road yesterday afternoon.

Coach Tormey’s developing well rounded players. I like that idea of putting punters & kickers through tackling drills.

Off to practice. Esme & out. Latahs…

  49. labrat August 13, 2009 8:08 am

    Go Warriors

    That one day you slack.
    You aint getting back.

    Stay on track.
    Attack,attack,attack.

  50. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 13, 2009 8:09 am

    ST,

How new is that platform? I think the first time I saw it was last week.

  51. Bulla August 13, 2009 8:09 am

    labrat,

    like that one 🙂

    mahalo

  52. Bulla August 13, 2009 8:13 am

    Kazz,

it must be pretty new, the top pipes don’t have any ‘DINGS’ yet from errant helmets, haha

    heads up 🙂

  53. jm2375 August 13, 2009 8:16 am

WTH is Daniel Synder thinking? Does he ever even consult Zorn? Vick can’t hit the side of the barn.

Go Colt! Show the rest of country what we all know you’ve got!
    Hail to the Redskins!

  54. Maverick August 13, 2009 8:16 am

I was ready to reply about the jumping donkey after the intial inflatable pool comment.

Whew, better words from you guys, than me.

  55. Willie August 13, 2009 8:22 am

Great article on special teams by Ferd Lewis, did not realize Warriors were dead last in punt returns. Finally, finally an emphasis on an area that was not given a priority for a long time. Can’t wait to see Tormey’s impact. Hope the team is also working on moving way down from the dubious distinction of leading the nation in penalty yards.

Special teams improvement & not beating yourself by being lolo can only be positive for 2009. 9/4 season opener right around the corner!

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid August 13, 2009 8:33 am

The platform blocking drills and the kicker/punter tackling drills indicate an emphasis on technique and preparedness. That’s good to see.

The orange/red thingys on the ground below the platform look like they’re used to keep the blockers’ feet in a wide stance. More good technique.

  57. NYUH August 13, 2009 8:34 am

    Mav,

Why does Channelsurfing.com go to Hasbro.com?

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid August 13, 2009 8:35 am

“in the proper stance” that should read above…

  59. Manoa Mist August 13, 2009 8:37 am

Appreciate the updates, pics and reports Mr. Tsai. Mahalo. Great story on the local kids – Torres and Parades – being awarded scholarships as well. Nice to see hard work pay off for deserving people.

  60. Maverick August 13, 2009 8:37 am

    NYUH-
    That’s cuz I was a dummy.

    It’s a .net
    sorry.

  61. Maverick August 13, 2009 8:43 am

speaking of punters/kickers turning into tacklers on returns.

This shout goes out to Dan Kelley. One of the best !!!!

  62. Maynard G. Krebs August 13, 2009 8:55 am

    DPK:

Stretch-Make sure you take notes so you can share with the rest of us. Don’t forget, I’m even dumber than you.

    Leaving yourself wide open?

    Good morning good people!

  63. LizKauai August 13, 2009 9:34 am

ST- does UH need a Tsai-ko bike contribution????

    Busy, rainy day today.

Ok, Rob25… I want to hear it one time for Colt – HTTR, ok? just one time!

    HIHO!

  64. JK August 13, 2009 9:48 am

I think the wading pool is funny yet sad that we do not have better facilities. I was waiting for ST to tell us that the pool wasn’t filled until the rain came yesterday because the AD is trying to save money. That would have been classic. Can we befriend Bill Gates or something to be our Sugar Daddy at the school so we can get updated things??

  65. wafan August 13, 2009 9:48 am

    Good mid-morning!

  66. wafan August 13, 2009 9:53 am

  68. SteveM August 13, 2009 10:14 am

    Good morning everyone!

…I finally have a day off this week…but I might have to work the farm… 😐

  69. SailorBlue August 13, 2009 10:22 am

Hey everybody, were only two days from Pride’s Relay for Life event.

Thanks to all those folks who have dug deep into their pockets and donated. With their help Pride is over half way to his goal (and becoming bolohead).

Anybody who still desires to donate, well there is still plenty of time. You can go to Pride’s RFL website for details on donating.

    http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY09PL?px=12593159&pg=personal&fr_id=16901

For those who can make it, please feel free to stop by Saturday night and provide moral support while Pride (and Jason?) walk. Snacks are also appreciated.

    Mahalo, SB

  70. al August 13, 2009 10:48 am

    observations…

aaron brown is built like an olb.
    paipai looks like a de.
tank looks pretty cut n solid no wonder he is a hard hitter.
i wonder how much ice n water was displaced when raphael and ray went into the pool?
must have been entertaining to watch the aussie on his first tackle ever.

btw, what ails brown, paipai, and hopkins?

  71. protector August 13, 2009 10:57 am

As I’ve said before, I feel Coach Tormey & Coach Shaw will prove to be two of the best 2009/2010 “recruits” for Coach MacK. Aside from Dunnachie, who has me salivating already, I’d be extremely surprised if Special Teams doesn’t turn out to be the most improved unit for UH, esp. with Coach Tormey’s tutelage & due diligence.

  72. Garret August 13, 2009 11:26 am

    Update from Miami’s practice.

Ted Ginn Jr. just dropped a pass during a drill where assistants hit the receivers with pads. Ginn was knocked a bit off balance and lost his concentration.

Davone Bess absorbs a similar shot and makes a difficult catch, maintaining complete body control. Bess is smooth in everything he does.

A catch in he corner of the end zone draws oohhs and aahhs from fans.

  73. koakane™ August 13, 2009 11:54 am

good mid day to all tsaiko’s and tsaikette’s. back on Oahu and man it is humid run for the ac establishments.

trying to find a place that will show Colt’s play today. if anyone knows lets do a cc. if not please share how and what is being broadcasted. talked to lizk and she is on it.

agree with bulla on the interesting rehab methods being used on the injured. no comment till see the result and reason for it. but definitely right on with the water or hydration part…very much need to replenish the body with fluids and icing the tender parts. remember when Jason Goo was the student at UH and trainer for the PACK…famous words on injuries was ice it.

speaking of bulla sending my best wishes to beast for a successful season. not forget to tell bruddah to stretch, stretch and stretch some more besides just lifting. don’t know if school has a pool but a few laps helps keep the body flexible.

back to lurking and esmeeeeeeeee while heading to starbucks for their free ac environment.

  74. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 11:55 am

are you serious? 5pm kickoffs so mr hill can get a good early plane ride back to the states? what else does he want? a police escort to the airport so he makes it there on time? sheesh. after the whuppin we’re gonna give him this year, he’s gonna wish he had the extra time to soak his sorrows at duke’s on the beach.

does karl benson say no to any suggestion? if he doesn’t, i suggest we bring back the balloons for basketball. i also suggest that we make his alma mater have normal green turf just like real football teams.

its a good thing we got rid of the swap meets. imagine being let in at 2:30 with barely 2 hours to tailgate and then rush into the stadium by 5? just what we need. more change to game times, etc to scare more of the old timers, who hate change, away.

when we return to fresno next year, can we request our game time too? or will we get mr benson’s voicemail?

  75. koakane™ August 13, 2009 11:55 am

whotahhhhhhh parte this sunday at the ceded lands hale. i’m in what time patnah?

  76. koakane™ August 13, 2009 11:57 am

st just saw your post about the new starting times. does this start with the first game which is on friday?

  77. Loa August 13, 2009 11:58 am

    afternoon gang!

earlier start to home conference games….hmmm
guess the traffic will be a little heavier earlier
should be good for our mainland viewers

  78. NYUH August 13, 2009 11:58 am

    Thanks Maverick,

So that is the Redskins tonite on http://channelsurfing.net/.

Well afternoon for most of you guys and gals.

  79. koakane™ August 13, 2009 11:58 am

st neva mind first game not WAC e kala mai

  80. Loa August 13, 2009 12:00 pm

wait till Kazz see’s how the new starting times started 🙂

  81. Loa August 13, 2009 12:01 pm

i kinda remember doing a lot of hyrdating in college

  82. Mad Dog August 13, 2009 12:02 pm

Colt and the Redskins game against Baltimore can be seen on http://www.channelsurfing.net/

  83. Loa August 13, 2009 12:02 pm

    koakane™ – i think today’s game only online

  84. koakane™ August 13, 2009 12:02 pm

so chawan how your really feel about coach Hill and Benson bwhaaaaaaaaa

feel the same UH is the senior member of the league and we still taking crap. come on UH admin man up like the sports team and back the warriors and wahines.

  85. Kazz August 13, 2009 12:04 pm

    5pm start times?

You gotta be f**king kidding me!

So, this begs the question: what other concessions are our WAC members going to do make things easier for road games Hawaii has to play?

  86. koakane™ August 13, 2009 12:04 pm

mahalo for the info loa, mad dog and to lizk for keeping us updated

  87. Slugger August 13, 2009 12:05 pm

Enjoyed being at practice this morning.

    Mahalo, PowderPuff, for the guide!

  88. Loa August 13, 2009 12:07 pm

methinks the conference no like us cause our teams kick arse, esp the Wahine

  89. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 12:09 pm

    koakane,
maybe benson got advice from koamahu as to how to bend over and @@%^@^@(*^*!## from fresno and especially his boise.

  90. Kazz August 13, 2009 12:12 pm

    Loa,

For me the time doesn’t effect me, but it may for others.

It’s the principal of the matter. How does the new earlier start time effect the fans? Especially the ones that work on Saturdays that have been able to stll make the 6pm start time?

  91. koakane™ August 13, 2009 12:13 pm

chawan now you ask your patnah on that.

  92. Kazz August 13, 2009 12:14 pm

    Chawan,

Now c’mon, let’s show some class here!

A simple, “Eat s**t and die” statement would have sufficed. 👿

  93. Kazz August 13, 2009 12:19 pm

So again I ask, “What will the WAC offer to Hawaii to make road conference games easier with regards to expense and travel time”?

Hmmm.. Might be a tall order of the usual aka “Not a god***n thing…”

  94. Loa August 13, 2009 12:19 pm

    Slugger – #87, any reports?

  95. Loa August 13, 2009 12:21 pm

    Kazz – i say nothing

  96. kama krab August 13, 2009 12:22 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

You got to be kidding me on the start time for WAC games. This will hurt our gate because there are still people that work on Saturdays and with the new start time they might not be able to make to the game until probably half time if they even decide to come now.

  97. royal crown August 13, 2009 12:23 pm

If the (WAC/Benson) argument of having earlier WAC football games makes sense, especially how it allows the visitors and earlier departure thus saving money of having to stay over night–then we’ll probably see all the WAC sports and games, mens and womens, at earlier start times, too. Just a hunch.

  98. Loa August 13, 2009 12:28 pm

sorry but i cannot think of anything good for the fans and the general public for an earlier start other than at least its only for the conference games

don’t the other teams use charters? or can the airlines change the departure times for those dates?

  99. A-House August 13, 2009 12:32 pm

Dang, now I really got to attend the Rainbotique “open house” on Fort Street Mall jus so I can ask J Donovan “what did/will the WAC do to change the start times for all UH road games in 2009”?

Benson does his “piss job” on UH fans again – does not matter if UH agreed to the request or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with chawan that no balls Benson should mandate Boise St to change their field turf to green, when they next chage the turf, to be in “compliance” with all other conference schools!!!!!!

UH also had to change the UNLV start time to 8pm to accommodate TV – yea, yea, I know about the “free publicity” for the program. BTW, who has made a study if all this “free publicity” has ever helped UH recruit? Has anyone who commited to and played for UH ever mention that he decided to play for the Warriors because he watched a game on TV?

  100. Dirty Commish August 13, 2009 12:35 pm

Foooosball is the devil, Bobby Boucher!!!

Oh, am I too late for the Waterboy references? Dang. Best. Movie. Ever.

5 pm kickoffs??? 5 pm kickoffs are the devil!!!

Well I guess it was good timing that they did away with the swap meet on home Saturdays. Gotta get an earlier start on tailgating, which is really a bummer for those that have to work.

  101. BG August 13, 2009 12:35 pm

    C_C

Is that really U?!! Gotta get me some of whatevah you ate for breakfast this morning! LOL

  102. Slugger August 13, 2009 12:36 pm

    Loa,

I don’t know very much. sjmacro, myki, Stretch, PowderPuff & ST were at practice. Plus a couple of cute little boys running around in the bleachers yelling, “Daaa” or “Daaad”.

I liked the drill where the d-line (& o-line, I think) lies down on the field, the play starts, they jump up & have to quickly spot the ball in play & go to it. That’s sorta what I’m trying to learn…how to look at the field at a glance and see the big picture before focusing on a few individuals.

  103. jojo ® August 13, 2009 12:37 pm

I like a 5:05 kickoff, then the game finishes earlier and I can hit the farm earlier. Errr, I mean the bars earlier.

Tough for the Fresno State Women’s basketball team, losing their title…that sounds so familiar……

  104. jojo ® August 13, 2009 12:39 pm

    HI LOA!!!

  105. hapahaoleboy August 13, 2009 12:39 pm

We should petition the WAC to have La Tech move their home games to Las Vegas, since it’s takes too long to get to Ruston..

  106. al August 13, 2009 12:40 pm

    “Loa:

    August 13th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
methinks the conference no like us cause our teams kick arse, esp the Wahine”

    hahahahaha.
    loa, i get it.
    hahahaha.

  107. al August 13, 2009 12:41 pm

i vote hapahaoleboy for wac commish.

  108. A-House August 13, 2009 12:42 pm

Dang, hapahaoleboy – that is a GOOD idea – wish I had that much deep thought!!

  109. BG August 13, 2009 12:42 pm

For da retired folks (like Koakane)

I tink bettah start tailgating around 11am for Sep 4. Ah lite?

Oh yeah…all da “sick” workers can show up too!!!

  110. al August 13, 2009 12:43 pm

    okay.
so who wants to have a guessing game?

the contest: how many games will jojo actually make this year?

  111. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 12:44 pm

so who is going to save us $? who is going to help us balance our budget that he-who-shall-not-be-named screwed up? equal opportunity? nope. lets make hawaii give, give, give…..

  112. al August 13, 2009 12:45 pm

at first i was concerned for koakane that he will have one less hour to “hydrate” before the game.

but, then again, he will now have an additional hour for post game hydration.

howzit brah? good to see you back on oahu.

  113. SteveM August 13, 2009 12:45 pm

In a decision inspired by Fresno State coach Pat Hill’s suggestion, UH’s home games against WAC opponents will now start at 5 p.m. Please adjust your tailgate schedules.

You gotta be shi**ing me!…. If I was looking for a reason not buy season tickets, I just got a golden one.

The evening games were always (I thought) for the comfort of the fans. Cooler, better atmosphere, and tailgate dinner time. The comfort of the fans in a stadium and state known for sunny weather…look at the strategy of the home team to take the makai sideline during day games.

Half the seats in the stadium will have the sun in their faces until 6:30 PM in September and 5:30 in November (approximately). Of course, mine is one–I have seats on the 45 yard line and excellent protection from the rain, so should I hope for cloudy and rainy days?

Sheesh– if UH is trying to sell Football season tickets, someone is not seeing the big sun (picture) and appeal here. Cannot apply mainland “standards” in stadiums at higher latitudes to a tropical location far south of Miami… 👿

Save a visiting team 1 night lodging expense? Is this “penny-wise and pound foolish”?

  114. AWP August 13, 2009 12:46 pm

Was Hawaii consulted on this? I don’t know if JD and Mac would concurr. This dilutes fan attendance coming from work, messes up traffic, takes away pregame revenues from concessions and eateries that offer bus and booze pkgs and puts the Mauka fans in the sun for another hour. I don’t see any positives for the home team here.

  115. Garret August 13, 2009 12:50 pm

don’t the other teams use charters? or can the airlines change the departure times for those dates?

    Loa,

WAC teams barely have enough money to keep their Athletic Departments going…they aren’t chartering flights to Hawaii!

And I cannot see the airlines changing departure times just for Warrior opponents. There is a latest possible departure time for them and they are on the same schedule year-round.

  116. SteveM August 13, 2009 12:52 pm

Sorry folks — I don’t usually go ballastic, but this 5:00 pm game start stupidity really torques my wrench… 🙁

  117. hapahaoleboy August 13, 2009 12:52 pm

al – lol…I think any of us could do a better job than old Karl…

And who is Pat to complain? Fresno is waaaayyyy out in the boonies. Make them play their home games in San Fran or Oakland.

  118. Garret August 13, 2009 12:53 pm

BTW, who has made a study if all this “free publicity” has ever helped UH recruit? Has anyone who commited to and played for UH ever mention that he decided to play for the Warriors because he watched a game on TV?

    A-House,

A *lot* of UH’s mainland recruits just over the past few years have mentioned that they stayed up to watch UH play on TV and they have mentioned that was a factor in UH being their favorite team and their picking UH for college.

  119. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 12:53 pm

BG, yeah its me. stuff like this fires me up. i just need to bottle it and save it for 22 days and release it at 7:05pm.
we don’t need to give people any MORE reason to not attend games. people teetering on the edge whether or not to go will use ANY reason to not go.
“oh, i felt a raindrop, can’t go to the game! what? an hour earlier? what? people make too much noise at the stadium! what? people stand up and i can’t see! what? the games are outside? what? div-1AA? what? i don’t know who the other team is! what? (SHOW UP TO SUPPORT OUR TEAM. NOT TO SEE THE OTHER TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)”
ok, nvm. gonna walk away now. bottle getting more full.

  120. Garret August 13, 2009 12:54 pm

    hapahaoleboy,

I agree with your point about Louisiana Tech. For a long time I’ve wished they would join some other conference so that UH can stop having to make that long trip…takes forever and I’m sure it costs UH a lot of extra money.

  121. royal crown August 13, 2009 12:54 pm

One hour difference in the start time and everyones becoming melodramatic.Wow, you guys are weird.

  122. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 12:54 pm

every WAC home game better have kona winds and the sun better set late. make them suffer and sweat and suffer some more.

  123. Garret August 13, 2009 12:56 pm

5pm is a *weird* time to start home games. I understand day games and night games, but 5pm means that the games will occur during the transition between the two.

At least the swap meet won’t happen on game days anymore…5pm games with the swap meet would have been horrible!

  124. Garret August 13, 2009 12:57 pm

    chawan_cut,

Regarding your #122 post–isn’t UH in the sun and not the visiting team?

  125. A-House August 13, 2009 12:57 pm

Others may not like this, but I put Benson and Hermie in the same boat, set sail, unplug the cork, and set them free to go wherever it takes them.

ha, I can see them telling each other to find the cork and plug the hole while sitting at each end on the little “dingy”.

Here, I was ready to have a calm start to the football season and then, WHAM, from benny!!!

It would be nice if each WAC school playing a home game against the Warriors get one of their better hotel to charge UH only half-price or less in exchange for UH moving up their home games to accommodate visiting WAC teams.

Now, what if the visiting WAC team wants to stay an extra day so the players can do some sightseeing? Will UH still have to move start time up to 5pm?

  126. d1島 August 13, 2009 12:58 pm

Like the emphasis on the “working wounded” that Mac is using. Glad to hear that the policy is flexible to accomodate specific injuries.

The ice bath seems to be utilized a lot to keep those legs fresh during camps. #1 and #2 sons relate the benefit of post-practice cool-downs. DPK- the colder, the better is what I am told.

Like the jungle gym contraption for the OL. I’ve seen one and two-man set-ups around but one that accomodates the entire unit seems like a very good evolution.

  127. Garret August 13, 2009 12:58 pm

On a positive note, UH’s website has a feature on the Warrior receivers.

UH returns a talented corps of receivers and coupled with a slew of redshirts and incoming players, the position should provide plenty of highlights for Warrior fans this season. This year speed is expected to play a key role in UH’s offense on the receiving end.

“I think what’s exciting is our team speed,” offensive coordinator Ron Lee said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but I think the receivers this year are the fastest we’ve had in the ten years I’ve been here.”

  128. hapahaoleboy August 13, 2009 1:00 pm

    @royal crown

The big deal is that 5p and 6p are drastically different in feel and comfort weather-wise with the sun and it would also affect those fans who work on Saturdays. Plus, for long-time fans, it’s really become a two-hour time difference now.

Maybe Hawaiian can step up to the plate and offer a late charter flight for the visiting teams between Hawaii and the West Coast? Then UH just stand it’s ground on the kick off time.

  129. Garret August 13, 2009 1:01 pm

BSU has found that the Pac-10 doesn’t want to do home-and-home games with them, so they are looking at taking big-dollar road games or doing 2-for-1 deals. If the budget situation doesn’t improve for other Athletic Departments, in my opinion it is only a matter of time before UH has to do this also.

Bleymaier says he will play any Pac-10 team home-and-home. The Broncos haven’t played any of the six southern Pac-10 schools since 1999.

“I’ve talked to most of them and they’re not interested in playing us home-and-home,” Bleymaier said. “At least once a year I try to make a call and see if anything changes and again let them know of our interest. And we’ll continue to do that.”

However, Bleymaier also has become more flexible with his scheduling strategy. He has filled the schedule mostly with home-and-home series in the past. Now he’s more willing to consider big-money road games and two-for-one series in which the Broncos would play two road games in exchange for a home game against a big-name team.

  130. Garret August 13, 2009 1:05 pm

Not only can NMSU not afford a charter flight…they cannot afford to feed their players snacks! Actually, I think that the Warrior players might like it if Warrior fans could cook some food for them…I love looking at the photos of the tailgate food.

In a twist on Little League moms lining up after-game treats, New Mexico State’s budget-conscious football staff distributed an e-mail this week asking fans to donate after-practice or late-night snacks for hungry players.

It’s a consequence of the national economy, of course.

“It’s a decision we had to make with regard to our meals,” first-year coach DeWayne Walker said Thursday. “There are a lot of other areas where we have to make tough choices with how we’re going to spend our money.”

Athletic director McKinley Boston said regents directed him to trim $1.5 million from the department’s budget, dropping the overall operations figure to about $17 million for the current academic year.

“It’s good stuff like trail mix or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” linebacker Jamar Cotton said. “We had a guy bring in a bunch of watermelons. That was great. The team was excited. It was like little kids getting lollypops.”

The snacks might seem like a luxury to outsiders but players say they’re helpful during preseason two-a-days, when the temperature is high and the demanding practices seem endless.

  131. Garret August 13, 2009 1:07 pm

Nice long feature article on Wisconsin, examining how they have declined over the past few years.

  132. al August 13, 2009 1:07 pm

if i recall correctly…back in the day the uh games started at 7:30 pm in the old termite palace. quite often it would end at 11:00 pm.

i believe it went from that to 7:05 to 6:05 to 5:05.

doing what we can to help the economy in general is a show of good faith on our part.

on the plus side, perhaps some of our broadcasts to the mainland will be more palatable to folks there. and like garret said, it is a great recruiting tool (broadcasts).

if anything the after-after tailgates have just now been extended another hour!!!

  133. A-House August 13, 2009 1:07 pm

    Garret:

June Jones changed sides some time ago so now the visiting team is on the Mauka sidelines and Coach Mack has continued this change.

  134. hapahaoleboy August 13, 2009 1:08 pm

I wonder if the NMSU players have their moms bring orange slices at halftime?

  135. Garret August 13, 2009 1:09 pm

It is sad that baseball and softball have been eliminated from the Olympics, but golf and rugby should be interesting. I’d love to see Leonard Peters play rugby for the US in the Olympics.

  136. A-House August 13, 2009 1:09 pm

Ooops, Garret, forget what I said in my #133 – this is true only for a game when the starting time is like 3pm or earlier.

  137. Garret August 13, 2009 1:11 pm

    A-House,

I know that UH changed sides for Hawaii Bowl games that started during the day, but will they switch sidelines for 5pm games? UH is able to switch sidelines for the Hawaii Bowl because the Hawaii Bowl claims UH is the “visiting” team…but that won’t work for conference games.

And you know Karl Benson would cite some “safety” reason why UH cannot switch sidelines because of the way the teams have to cross to get to the locker room…

  138. Kazz August 13, 2009 1:12 pm

For me and some it’s the principal of the matter.

So I ask AGAIN: “What will the WAC do to accommodate UH for conference road games?”

  139. d1島 August 13, 2009 1:12 pm

Posting about the start time change separately since most of my initial thoughts seem to run against the tide so far.

    I think it’s NBD ’cause:

    – I see lots of older fans leaving after the 3rd quarter. Maybe now they’ll stick around for the end. Hey, even if they no make so much noise, at least it looks better with the seat filled.

    – The game gets listed as a Saturday game during Daylight Savings Time period.

    – As Garret pointed out, and some mainland Tsaikos have commented, it will help to get more folks watching for mainland exposure.

    – Switch the sidelines and keep the visiting team in the sun a little longer.

    – It will be easier to wake up for NFL games 😉

  140. al August 13, 2009 1:12 pm

home games….for me i always thought that ideally we should play all of our home games at 1:00 pm.

the home field advantage to me increased if we were playing in the heat of the day and the hotter and more humid it was the greater our home field environment became. having the opponent wilt on the mauka sidelines would be fun to watch also.

we have been spoiled for years watching night games, including the high school games.

and don’t tell the state how much they could save on energy usuage if all games were day games to include high school games.

  141. A-House August 13, 2009 1:12 pm

    Garret:

your #130 – does this mean that the NMSU football team is being fed by their booster club?

kinda close to violationg a NCAA rule that you must give to ALL students?

  142. al August 13, 2009 1:15 pm

kazz…i am sure that jd and mack are putting their heads together on this one. you know they both agreed to this change in time.

i am sure that a proposal is being entertained as we speak.

  143. al August 13, 2009 1:16 pm

d1… please explain to wdoc what “nbd” means?
    mwahahaha
    i get it.

  144. hapahaoleboy August 13, 2009 1:17 pm

What we might as well do is:

    – move the game to a 1 pm kick-off

    – put the visiting team on the sunny side

    – turn the electricity off on that side (no cool air fans)

    – paint that sideline area black (since it is an official team color).

Maybe Pat will change his tune when all his players cramp out in the 3rd quarter?

  145. d1島 August 13, 2009 1:17 pm

One other thing mentioned was short-changing the concessions from an hour of sales.

C’mon! Everbody complaining about the prices and we all sneaking in spam musubis anyway to avoid buying the stuff to begin with! 😈

  146. royal crown August 13, 2009 1:18 pm

132-al, I always liked your thought process. You’re always upbeat, and you very rarely harbor any pessimism. Though sometimes we don’t see eye to eye on things you’re one of the very few poster here that I have respect for.

  147. Garret August 13, 2009 1:19 pm

    Al,

I agree with your point in #140. I think that day games would be a huge advantage for UH. When the swap meet was there that was not possible, but now that is not a problem.

I’ve been to day games for a number of other schools and thought that it gave them an advantage (especially Texas in August/September!). Visiting teams have their sleep patterns interrupted and they could be less rested for day games.

The possible downside is that attendance could drop due to people having to work on Saturday.

  148. d1島 August 13, 2009 1:20 pm

    hapahaoleboy,

You like the visitors cramp in the third Q?
Sponsor them to maitais and mopeds the night before…ask Mich St. bball team; they know! 👿

  149. Garret August 13, 2009 1:21 pm

    A-House,

I’m sure that NMSU worked out the compliance issues. I’m guessing it is okay because the food is being donated to NMSU instead of given directly to the players. Kind of like how we can donate money to help support the training table, NMSU is asking for donations of food to feed their players.

  150. bb August 13, 2009 1:22 pm

i bet our hotels could have used that revenue

  151. Mad Dog August 13, 2009 1:22 pm

Sunset time for WAC games in Honolulu:
    10/10/09: vs Fresno: 6:12
    10/24/09: vs Boise: 6:01
    11/07/09: vs Utah State 5:53
11/14/09: vs New Mexico State 5:50

I think the Aloha Stadium shadows should cover the field about 20 minutes prior to sunset, so that would mean only a quarter, at most, would be played in sunshine. And it’s not noon time heat.

I suppose everyone must chip in and help one another in these tough economic times.

  152. A-House August 13, 2009 1:22 pm

    d1:

your #139 – I thought about that also, BUT what about the majority of UH fans who have difficulty making the 5:05p start time – many just barely make the 6:05p start time which means they will probably miss the entire first quarter and part of the 2nd qtr.

al has a valid point for a 1pm start time, but it would take a lot of changes for UH fans to accept a 1 pm start time. must agree that the Stadium will save a bundle for electricity bill. I got accustomed to watching 1pm games when I was stationed at Ft Knox sitting in the luxary of my BOQ room with A/C on. Kentucky summers are a lot like Guam and Samoa – step outside and you start to sweat profusely!!

If Coach Mack or Jim Donovan were cited using various reasons for it then I wouldn’t be so upset. When another conference member or members suggest it and it happens with what appears to be NO consultation with UH officials it stinks!

Of course the details have yet to be released, so I’ll save the bullets and the sniper rifle for another day… 😆

  165. koakane™ August 13, 2009 1:39 pm

totally agree with the game being played at 1. advantage warriors ( in shade) and (hot/humidity) disadvantage to visitors.

but then again the other team and benson probably demand UH put up fans with the water spray.

  166. d1島 August 13, 2009 1:40 pm

    A-house,

We’ll see how much the time change impacts attendance since only WAC home games are affected.

IMHO if the “majority” of those attending the games are racing in to beat the opening kick-off after getting off from work then there must be plenny people who are just rushing the parking lot gates at 2:00 because they get a kick out of paying to park anywhere 🙄

actually another sidebar effect that a 1 pm start time has, is less time to shake out the jetlag for the opposing team since they can’t change the inbound flt time unless they come in a day early which defeats the purpose of a cost cutting meaure of a later start time.

I would much rather watch Colt, instead of Vanna. My younger days are done with when vanna was the hottie of the 80’s

I might be spelling out the Vowels with those WTF abbr. consonants soon if the game isn’t televised.

  175. Maverick August 13, 2009 1:55 pm

At least were listening to Sonny Jergunson on the broadcast. Makes it a bit smoother to digest from not being able to watch it

  176. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 1:56 pm

    garret,
you’re right about us being in the sun, but i figure we are always in the sun so it shouldn’t bother us. although coach mack could do the sideline switch and make the other teams suffer.

  177. LizKauai August 13, 2009 1:58 pm

    Campbell is still QB

  178. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:02 pm

JMHO (heheheh) but the longer Campbell stays in for this 1st game the more you gotta question his firm grasp on the starting position….if he has nothing to prove to his HC, it should be one series and done.

  179. al August 13, 2009 2:02 pm

koakane….think of it. a 1 pm start means that we would be forced to “reserve” the cabana the day before and somebody need to be there to….er. “watch the stuff”.

  180. A-House August 13, 2009 2:03 pm

IIRC, the Makai sidelines are not in shade at 1pm – more like 4-4:30pm depending on month which means that both teams will be in the sun for most of the game.

    d1:

every UH home game, just before kick-off, I use my binocs to see how many fans are still coming across the “bridge from Aiea” and it is usually packed.

but, I agree, let us wait and see how the 5:05pm start time will affect the crowd – fan reaction on this news should be in tomorrow or Saturday’s paper.

  181. al August 13, 2009 2:05 pm

    words of wisdom from d1.

i am thinking that once colt proves he is a viable backup to campbell, the next step is that they release collins and his big paycheck. of course it is also predicated by daniels’ progress.

  182. jojo ® August 13, 2009 2:07 pm

another reason I like the 5:05 start is that joje will be stinky after her multiple sport commitments

  183. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 2:07 pm

why is campbell in. we all know what he can’t do.

  184. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:08 pm

    al,

CB mentioned that his 5-yr contract was junk to him. But to go along with what you’re saying, it could be his saving grace so long as he can continue to improve.

  185. al August 13, 2009 2:08 pm

    ahouse.
but we have the advantage because we live here and are more acclimated to this weather. then we would need to practice mid day on occasion.

    but, yeah.
people fear and are affected by change more than the actual effects of change.

upsetting the applecart has been an age old problem or old age problem.

  186. Slugger August 13, 2009 2:09 pm

Thanks for the radio link, LizK!

I’m getting Wheel of Fortune on the channelsurfing link, too.

  187. Loa August 13, 2009 2:10 pm

Slugger – thanks for the report

    hiya jojo ® !

great discussion today w/ SteveM and chawan_cut getting all worked up 😆

  188. NYUH August 13, 2009 2:11 pm

    Not getting the ‘Skins game.

  189. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2009 2:11 pm

I think the Navy game is going to be 5:30 p.m.
    Not sure about Wisconsin.

  190. al August 13, 2009 2:13 pm

cb needs to continue to show progress and the ability to become a system qb who can achieve success in another system. if he doesn’t replace the starter by next year he would then become excellent trade bait where he could land somewhere where they really need him to become the starter and then the big bucks will come.

and yes his 5yr deal sucks since he gets minimum salary if i am not mistaken.

  191. Loa August 13, 2009 2:13 pm

hey yesterday i think Bpew mentioned a justin tv link for today’s game, does that make sense to anyone

    Re: Colt TV –

Try channelsurfing.net (Put the http://www. in front). Right now, the viewing “guide” says the game will be on at 7:30pm EST. I think it’s EDT.

The other source is justin.tv (Again add the http://www. in front). I’ve had good success w/ those sources. Often, they get cut off, but you have to hunt around for someone “sharing” the feed.

  193. lava August 13, 2009 2:17 pm

My best guess re Redskins qb when season opens — Campbell remains #1, Colt #2, and a veteran is picked up as #3.

  194. LizKauai August 13, 2009 2:20 pm

    No Colt yet

  195. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 2:20 pm

i’m watching the nfl.com web gamecast. the stat tracker “live” thing.

  196. J-Dog August 13, 2009 2:20 pm

Thanks for the Colt updates. Keep em coming for us people stuck at work!

  197. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:20 pm

    Collins in now 🙄

  198. Maverick August 13, 2009 2:21 pm

Channelsurfing just switched their Redskins link to AUDIO only.

guess they only paid half of their bill lol

btw, Justin tv usually piggybacks Channelsurfing

  199. al August 13, 2009 2:25 pm

i really thing that our defense will be good this year. it may take a few games to mesh. but, i think that by la tech we will be a defense to be reckoned with.

for one, we have the fiery leaders on defense. for example, soares, meatoga, satele.
we have the lead by example guys, fonoti, rj, tufaga, lolotai, paredes.
we have the hitters tank, smith, silva, brown, and all of the aforementioned.
we have the speed davis, hopkins, smith, bryant, brown.
we have the new guys who as group all came from highly successful jc’s and who were all at the top of their levels.
we have a defensive unit who will fight for each other’s back, just like you need in real combat

we have new blood on the staff like smith(ravens guy), tormey, who along with the best defensive guy we have ever had in mack coupled with the best local d coach in cal, who btw, his expertise is motivating and instilling confidence…all spells a swarming, hitting, and crowd pleasing defense that will come out of nowhere.

  200. lava August 13, 2009 2:25 pm

Is anyone blogging here and actually watching the Redskins?

  201. al August 13, 2009 2:26 pm

  202. djmitcho August 13, 2009 2:27 pm

WOW! Michael Vick signs with the Eagles.

yah vick with eagles. that should be interesting.

  204. LizKauai August 13, 2009 2:29 pm

    Skins offense is not pretty

  205. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:31 pm

Collins led two 3 and outs; 1-3, 5 yards

  206. Ralph August 13, 2009 2:33 pm

SI ranking is out, we’re rated below SMU, but above 3 WAC teams, SJST, Utah State and Idaho. No respect, got to do it on the field, coach Mac got to get the troops coached up to win more than 7 games.

  207. Ralph August 13, 2009 2:35 pm

coach Trap recruited his third local player for 2011, i guess JD must have impressed him but limiting his roll over to one year and based on performance, wins, more local players and the bottom line.

  208. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:37 pm

    Ralph,

Wow, below SMU? Hawaii Bowl loss really did UH no favors.

  209. SailorBlue August 13, 2009 2:38 pm

So Mrs SB and I were downtown for a lunch meeting and had a little extra time so we stopped by the Fort St & Queen Rainbowtique.

Couple of good deals worth mentioning:

-Grand opening special – buy any polo shirt and get a ladies Under Armor polo shirt for $20 (normally $50)…not sure how long this will last but a good deal…

-Grand Opening tomorrow (14th) from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Virginia Hinshaw, JD and Mac will be there. Free food, drawings for prizes and Kapena with Music.

-Warrior Rewards card – Every time you make a purchase of $25, get you card stamped (you can get multiple stamps per visit). When you get 10 stamps, get $25 off your next purchase.

Plus they have stuff that isn’t in the Ward’s Center shop.

All in all, it was a good stop.

  210. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:39 pm

Collins moving the team now. 12, 7 yd completions before a false start. ball at midfield

  213. Willie August 13, 2009 2:41 pm

  214. LizKauai August 13, 2009 2:42 pm

  215. d1島 August 13, 2009 2:42 pm

Why haven’t they played Colt? Because they’re the Redskins. They don’t do anything that makes sense. And Jim Zorn wants to keep Colt under wraps so that he can take CB5 with him when he gets fired.

At least they caught the degenerate that threw the beer at Shane.

  224. Maverick August 13, 2009 3:08 pm

The pecking order is in place when it comes to preseason QB action.
remember last season how colt finished most of the games?

no blocking by his line. its like they just let them thru each time. and baltimore had some blitzes that were timed just right. on that INT, he got hit by a blitzer and the wr got hit before the ball got there. on that last one, he almost got tackled by 3 d-linemen. c’mon now!

    16-3 Steelers vs. AZ

  269. lava August 13, 2009 4:33 pm

Thanks chawan_cut: for the link to the Redskins’ game.

Hard to grade the qbs when the line is so ineffective. We saw this last year with Zorn’s Redskins. After that, I’m thinking his job is on the line this season.

QB dispute aside, I’m thinking the Redskins spent way too much money on the defensive line, bad knees and all, and has totally neglected the o-line, making it impossible for the qbs to gain any kind of rhythm. Hope Albert can score some TDs, since the Skins’ line is not allowing the qbs to orchestrate anything.

  270. hapahaoleboy August 13, 2009 4:34 pm

Samson is in at center for the Raiders right now…to bad he’s not with the Skins!

  273. Kekoa August 13, 2009 4:47 pm

Justin TV connection on the net worked good for me. Too bad the ‘Skins Oline was ragged. Colt was struggling as a result. Oh well, at least it was obvious that when they carried out their assignments, Colt could get a decent completion.

  274. Kekoa August 13, 2009 4:53 pm

  280. AWP August 13, 2009 5:30 pm

IMHO Colt graded at B-. Protected the ball. Made his 5 step drops when called. Hit receivers in right place. Stayed in the pocket when it was there. Stepped up in pocket as first option. Rolled only to elude rush except on one planned rollout. Threw long passes to places only receiver could catch the ball. The I falls on the WR over the middle who made a poor cut and then was juked in the back before the ball arrived. CB’s timing was OK on this play.
Considering the blitz package by the Ravens. he did well to survive without another turnover. Colt needs to have time with the first string line.

  281. labrat August 13, 2009 5:33 pm

Number 47 looking good snapping the ball in Patriot uni.

  282. Kazz August 13, 2009 5:57 pm

Jim Donovan’s comments on The Sports Animals this afternoon regarding the earlier start times for home WAC games:

-JD says that it started with FSU AD back in March requesting to move home games in Hawaii to 3 or 3:30pm. JD initially shut that idea down because the swap meet is in effect and would effect home attendance for a non-bowl game. Then fast forward to WAC press conference when Pat Hill brought it up. Then discussions with Stadium Authority regarding getting rid of the Swap Meet on UH football game days started happening and then JD was willing to move it up an hour to allow the visiting team to leave on a red-eye flight. JD says that FSU liked it and out of “courtesy” JD asked other WAC schools if they’d like the same and they agreed.

-JD says the movement of the start time in Hawaii was also done to show a willingness on UH’s part to be a “team player” in the WAC. JD estimates this is saving visiting WAC schools about 15,000.00 each. JD expressed concerns that other WAC teams look at UH as a task as opposed to a “destination” considering travel costs and the economy.

-Gary Dickman asked if this could open doors for non-conference opponents to use this as leverage to move those games earlier. JD says this season won’t be an issue as the Navy and Wisconsin games are set or controlled by the WAC’s agreement with ESPN, but will wait to see if that will start being an issue in the seasons to come.

-JD says that this earlier start time will be like a two-year “wait and see” deal. If it doesn’t work for a lot of fans in general he’ll have to sit down with the other ADs to work things out or back to normal.

-JD says he’s been getting the reaction from people so far that “it’s just one more hour” and not so much of a dire change.

    ==============

In the beginning I was pissed! No doubt and I still feel like “why the hell do WE have to make concessions for others with us getting NOTHING really in return”?

After listening to Donovan on the radio I do feel a little better about it, but I share the same concerns with Gary Dickman in that other non-WAC schools coming to Hawaii to play will try to “strong-arm” UH into favorable start times for the visiting school and not to UH and it’s fans…

ALSO, Jim Donovan hinted that the official announcement of the elimination of Swap Meets on UH football Saturdays will become a thing of the past… Jim Donovan never confirmed this, but it seems like the official announcement from the Stadium Authority will soon be on it’s way. At least this will compensate for the earlier start time for those tailgating INSIDE the stadium lots.

  283. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 6:03 pm

    kazz,
i’m with you. feel a little better with the explanation. the WAC better not forget that we’re giving so much though. i don’t see any other school sacrificing. maybe the teams that are saving money should give us half.

  284. d1島 August 13, 2009 6:14 pm

    Mahalo Kazz for the report.

  285. d1島 August 13, 2009 6:17 pm

I hope I never find myself on one of those red-eye flights…not sure that they going have ’nuff time for let everybody shower! 😈

  286. Slugger August 13, 2009 6:24 pm

Thanks for the summary of JD’s interview, Kazz.

Are there any adjustments that could be made for UH’s road games that would help with travel expenses?

  287. roygbivs [Terence] August 13, 2009 6:54 pm

sorry if this is a repeat: those wading pools are soooo ghetto! Can’t believe this is a Division 1 program, but I’m gonna love them until the day i die. sheeese.

  288. chawan_cut August 13, 2009 6:56 pm

tonight’s news. you’ll see the lack of blocking for colt here.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYCm6qa6f9Y

  289. A-House August 13, 2009 6:58 pm

Even after reading Kazz’s summary of JD interview, why is that UH is always to one to make sacrificies? or, am I wrong?

To get into the WAC, UH had to pay for travel expenses of other WAC schools traveling to Hawaii, but did the other schools pay or reduce UH expenses when they went to the mainland? I don’t believe so.

Some will say, “hey, you way out there and must pay the price of “belonging” to the conference””. It’s a hellava price to pay.

Like Korea and Viet Nam, it was the “principle” that was important; loss of personnel and material was a weak second.

  296. Garret August 13, 2009 7:37 pm

This is the official release from UH about the time change for WAC home games.

“Initially, Fresno State expressed interest in moving the start time so they could catch the red-eye flight back to the West Coast,” Donovan said. “After consulting with our facilities staff and Scott Chan at Aloha Stadium, we agreed to accommodate them and offer that same time slot to our other three WAC home opponents.

“Our intention is to revert back to the 6:05 p.m. kickoff when everyone’s budget gets better in the next year or two. However, if we receive positive feedback from this switch, we may consider keeping the 5:05 p.m. kickoff in the future.”

  297. Jack Flash August 13, 2009 7:41 pm

Does anyone else besides me think that Jim Zorn should stop messing with Colt’s mechanics so much and just let the guy play? He’s a natural talent- one of the most accurate passers in the history of football. June Jones saw this and cultivated it, whereas Jim Zorn just wants to tear it apart and rebuild as he sees fit. It’s insulting to June in a way actually. I don’t see a long future in the NFL for Jim Zorn as a head coach.

  298. Garret August 13, 2009 7:41 pm

Texas hasn’t even completed its first week of training camp and they have lost their *third* TE for the season! I guess Texas will be running a spread offense again instead of their traditional offense (which includes formations with 1 and 2 TEs).

Texas tight end D.J. Grant is out for the season after tearing multiple ligaments in his right knee.

He became the third Longhorns tight end to suffer a season-ending knee injury, and August workouts aren’t even a week old.

Blaine Irby, who suffered a severe knee injury last September, already has been ruled out for 2009. Josh Marshall, a backup, was forced to take a medical hardship and retire from football because of problems with his shoulder.

Grant’s injury will require reconstructive surgery to repair the ligament damage he sustained late in Wednesday’s practice.

  299. Jack Flash August 13, 2009 7:43 pm

BTW- i like having the earlier kickoff. Now i won’t feel so guilty keeping my kids up late for home games at the stadium!

  300. Garret August 13, 2009 7:48 pm

I’m trying not to say much about Colt’s day…this was a really bad day for his career, possibly even a career-changing moment–since it would seem that the #2 spot is not possible now this season, he needed to be amazing to overcome Zorn’s preference for Collins to be the #2. People dismissed his performance last preseason because he was going up against the backups for other teams…but he had the backups blocking and catching for him also.

Today was an example of a QB not being able to show what he could do because of OL problems. Trouble is, there are so few preseason games that he won’t have many more chances to show what he can do.

  301. curveball August 13, 2009 7:50 pm

More time for cake and watermellon after the game…..and celebration

  302. Jack Flash August 13, 2009 7:54 pm

The biggest problem with the NFL is that everyone does what everybody else does- not much originality from team to team. Why not switch it up and have the #3 and #4 QB’s go 1st? See how they do with (and against) 1st stringers? The answer is probably “that’s not how it’s done.” Ridiculous! This is why I watch college football and surf on Sundays…

  303. Slugger August 13, 2009 7:57 pm

    roygbivs,

Evidently you have never been a mother with small children…

The wading pools used for post-practice icing are probably lighter to move and empty than semi-permanent structures. They can be hosed out easily; bet someone could man-handle them onto their sides to hose ’em out. Without a big budget and state-of-the-art facilities, those pools seem like a great idea to provide icing down & a soak. You’d need more cleaning staff to wash out tiled, permanent soaking tubs. Replacements are readily available.

No grumble…unless you would like to fund new facilities & volunteer to clean up after stinky athletes. 🙂

  304. Slugger August 13, 2009 8:03 pm

I was only able to listen to the Redskins game on ESPN internet radio. It sounded like all of the QBs for the Redskins had problems and it seemed to start with the o-line protection. As one of the commentators said, the o-line seemed like a sieve. It wasn’t all on CB.

I appreciate your suggestion of an ‘inside’ fundraiser for a new bike much like what we did for Women’s Softball WAC bracelets. Anyone at McCully bike reading this? Sports Authority?

You don’t think Zorn is going to see this???

  307. Garret August 13, 2009 8:12 pm

If all things were equal, Colt and Todd Collins knew that Zorn would have Collins as the #2 QB and Colt as the #3 QB. Colt needed to do much better than Collins to move up on the depth chart, something that Zorn and Colt referred to during the past week. Unfortunately, OL problems just didn’t give Colt the chance.

For comparison purposes, here are the stats that Zorn will look at:
    Colt: 4/12 passing, 43 yards, 3 sacks, 1 INT, QB rating 10.1
    Collins: 8/11 passing, 70 yards, 0 sacks, 0 INT, QB rating 89.2
    Campbell: 3/6 passing, 38 yards, 0 sacks, 0 INT, QB rating 70.1

Garret NE backup qb had a lot of problems too. I thought they were going to lose the game. But the former pro bowl kicker for Philly missed the game winning 42 yard field goal.

  313. Garret August 13, 2009 8:18 pm

Remember, Campbell is the starter and will play more in the second preseason game than he did in this one, and he’ll play most of the third preseason game. He’ll probably sit out the final preseason game.

That doesn’t leave much time left over for the other 3 QBs. Since Collins is the top backup, he’ll get some playing time in games 2 and 3. He might sit out the final game also.

That leaves very little time in games 2 and 3 and all of game 4. Trouble is, Zorn said that he would get Chase Daniel a fair shot this preseason, which could mean that Daniel gets the reps in game 2 and Colt doesn’t play at all.

Maybe Colt will get some time in game 3…though Campbell will play almost all the game and Collins will play some too. That leaves the final preseason game, but Colt has to split that with Daniel.

Frankly, I thought that this game was the only chance Colt had to change Zorn’s plan for their QBs this preseason. It doesn’t matter if it was the OL’s fault or anything else, the facts are that what happened on the field won’t change Zorn’s mind for the pecking order of the QBs.

Another clear example of how important line play is. Maybe you can slide by in Pop Warner, and even HS – but in college, and NFL – no line, no play! This applies to both sides of the ball! IMHO…. 😈

  342. Garret August 13, 2009 9:11 pm

    curveball,

I could be wrong and you could be correct. However, I don’t think we really disagree on this issue. I had been hoping that Colt would get a real shot at the #2 QB spot, which would require a change in how the preseason reps are given out. My point is that I don’t think that will happen now that this games didn’t go Colt’s way.

Colt will be a great #3 QB for Washington this season. He had been talking about trying to move up to #2 and said that Zorn had been talking about him about getting a real shot this preseason to show what he could do. If you flipped Colt’s stats with Collins’ stats this game, maybe Colt gets extra reps in games 2 and 3 where he could show what he could do…

Coqui poke: Mahalo for the football dictionary reference. It’s definitely going to be helpful in understanding the game. Am printing it out tomorrow.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I only have access to a computer between 10 pm and 7 am these days.

Who else besides M&M A-House & Slugger will be working on the Manoa Makeover service project this Saturday? Hopefully, we’ll be assigned once again to the area around Ching Field sp we can sneak a peek at the practice. Pay includes a tee-shirt, FREE parking, and lunch.

walked by the new rainbowtique shop by accident this evening. didn’t know that it was located there.

peeked in and saw a lot of birthday gifts including a peewee herman type bicycle.

employees were busy getting ready for opening day. fortunately for my pocket book they were closed at the time.

    nice store.

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    most excellent article this morning,ST
the chute alone shows that super positive upgrades can come super fast. when the player can see positives in himself, the team’s mental health gets upped a notch or more. great stuff.

also, good to read Blount’s peevin about how great Dunnachie is doing.
    again, really great story.

and when I added to my delight by readin da odda paper’s article about Brian Smith’s comments on Chizzy and Alex Green, I stay tinkin, get hope, real hope.

an i wonda, has Ralph come down to ertt yet? 😀

    From the fresno website:

“We are grateful to Jim Donavan and Coach McMackin for working with us,” said head coach Pat Hill. “As everyone knows, the Hawaii trip is always tough and when we have to stay overnight after the game, it not only costs more but it make for a long travel day on Sunday and we don’t get back to Fresno until Sunday night. All in all, this is a great situation for us not only from a budget standpoint but also to help the guys get some rest on Sunday and be fresh and ready for classes on Monday morning.”

The team will be departing on two different flights between 10:30-11 p.m., which brings them home Sunday at around noon.

  379. Don Weir August 14, 2009 7:42 am

    A-House
Even though the money was run through Na Koa I mis-spoke as I was referring to the donations that poured in via the ‘Tsaikos’ .
At that time I was working with the UH Letterwinners Club board and with fellow board member (and great past basketball player of UH) Cliff Sanchez. Cliff and I challenged letterwinners to support the bracelet program and did a $ challenge. Tsaiko’s amd letterwinners came through and the only credit goes to Women’s Softball for winning the WAC and getting the recognition they truly deserve.

I will contact those that repsonded to the bike posting and we (Tsaiko’s and Na Koa) will make this happen too.

  380. Don Weir August 14, 2009 7:45 am

Yes I did not do spell check on $382 as I need to get to practice and then on to paperwork.

  381. wafan August 14, 2009 8:27 am
