Falemalu, Fonoti expected to miss UNLV game

UH head coach Greg McMackin said he does not expect defensive ends Paipai Falemalu or Fetaiagogo Fonoti to play in Saturday’s game against UNLV. Both did not practice today. Falemalu was on crutches and wearing a medical boot to protect a sprained right ankle. Fonoti has missed more than two weeks of practices because of a hyper-extended left knee.

LAS VEGAS — Maybe because it’s Vegas — OK, definitely because it’s Vegas — but there have not been any murmurs about missing home.

Not from coaches. Nor from players. Nor from staff. (More UH staff workers, in fact, are arriving today.)

Former UH basketball coach Riley Wallace used to worry about players being “hotel-logged,” his phrase for the negative effects on a team being on the road too long. But the Warriors appear not only to be energetic, but unflinchingly focused.

A lot has to do with the tight schedule: Practice. Meetings. Meals. Study hall. Rinse. Repeat.

Part of it is the mini-suite-like rooms, each featuring a fridge and 40-inch, flat-screen TV. (Confession: Because I did not notice the wide-screen TV mounted on the wall, I aimed the TV remote at … the fridge, which is in the TV cabinet.)

Comfy players are happy players.

Busy players are focused players.

So, yes, Vegas is starting to feel like home.

Maybe that’s why Wallace has homes in both Vegas and Hawai‘i.

One of the Hawai‘i  high school football legends— former Saint Louis slotback/returner Shannon Cabunoc — stopped by the hotel where the team is staying.

Cabunc is doing well. He lives in Vegas, working for a limo company. He recently drove Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel and her dog.

Yay, first! I love my new flat screen TV at home. Wish the new ones at Aloha Stadium were 40-inches.

  12. wafan September 17, 2009 3:16 am

Too bad about the injured UNLV player from Hawai’i. Hate to see injuries to anyone — especially if they are Warriors!

  13. wafan September 17, 2009 3:17 am

East coast has clickable TV commercials. Great. Just what I always wanted. More commercials. Dang.

  14. wafan September 17, 2009 3:18 am

    Sure is quiet down South.

Commercials for Christmas stage productions in Seattle started to run this morning. Rockettes and Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

    They skipped Halloween and Thanksgiving!

    Busy day today!

  17. NYUH September 17, 2009 3:27 am

Got my coffee and 40 inch blaring.

Hope Rausch is healing quickly but taking advantage of the situation to build some muscle and practice the haka.

  18. NYUH September 17, 2009 3:32 am

So my building was just wired for FIOS. I’m suffering with TW but enjoying the HD games and I’ve already paid for my ESPNGameplan (a waste so far). Do I give up the Gameplan and sign up for the FIOS? BTW, my STB keeps crashing now and I have to constantly reboot and sometimes miss recording shows on my DVR. Anybody got FIOS?

  19. Stephen Tsai September 17, 2009 3:37 am

When I first saw the headline, I thought: A gas company is injured?
Then again, I do point remotes at fridges.

  20. Stephen Tsai September 17, 2009 3:40 am

    They keep practicing the haka.
One of the players said they won’t debut it until the Fresno State game.
They said they have the motions, but need to perfect the chant.
OK, why do I keep hearing Madonna singing: “I’ve got the moves, baby, you’ve got the motion … if we got together, we’d be causin’ a commotion…”

  21. Stephen Tsai September 17, 2009 3:44 am

Rich does the “Ferd” trick with me.
“Ferd” will call my cell. And if I don’t pick up, he’ll call, my home phone. Then cell. Then home phone.
By the time I’m available, I’ll check caller ID, then call him back.
    He won’t pick up.
Then you have to call a second time, and he’ll say: “Oh, sorry, I was busy.”
Every time I call Rich2176 back, no answer.
We’ve left voice mails with each other the past week. Then again, I did call him at 12:30 a.m. today.

  22. losthawaiian September 17, 2009 4:16 am

In today’s LA times sport section, they had an article about that wide receiver/ track star. He just quit the team and will now concentrate only on track. Seems like our boys whacked the desire right out of his system. I guess there’s no contact in track…..LOL!

  38. rage777 September 17, 2009 6:13 am

    NYUH,

I have FIOS TV, internet, and phone. I love it except for a few things about the FIOS TV. I don’t like that you need a STB for each TV to get a digital signal. The DVR on the STB isn’t the best, I like the Tivo way more. If I could afford a TivoHD, I would definitely get that over the Fios box and get some M-cards. I don’t like that I can’t use my PC as a DVR anymore unless I get a STB or a little converter box. Other than that, I really like Fios.

  39. lava September 17, 2009 6:21 am

    Bad news – – –

LAS VEGAS >> Freshman Paipai Falemalu is out and senior John Fonoti is unlikely to play Saturday against UNLV, Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin said today after practice as the Warriors continue to be plagued by injuries at defensive end.

At left end, junior Jake Heun will make his first Division I start, and Liko Satele will start on the right, the coach said. Elliott Purcell and Bo Montgomery are now No. 2 on the depth chart.

    FYI

  50. kama krab September 17, 2009 8:23 am

    Howzit Everybody,

    ai-eee-soos,

Definately bad news. Hopefully we kind find diamonds in the ruff from our second and third string guys and hopefully we can get John Fonoti and Paipai back by the time we get up to Ruston. If we don’t, that game might become a very long game.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid September 17, 2009 8:26 am

We’ll miss Paipai and Fonoti, thankfully we have some great back ups ready to go. I loved the shot from the Wazzu game that showed Blaze and Jake lined up on the left side, ready to take somebody’s head off.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid September 17, 2009 8:27 am

    Howzit Tsaiko villagers!

Arrived LV close to the midnite hr. Found KK, JJ, Frank25 in serious trouble trying to ward off evil gambling spirits, by consuming large quantities of liquid refreshments.

Continued on to attempt to defeat those evil spirits with A-joe/A-sports (book). Diana came out da big winnah. I finished in-the-money by 2 bills. We had pulled an all-nighter, and came out to the plus side!

Now we rest up for round two!

  57. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) September 17, 2009 9:22 am

For those (like me) not going to Vegas, where will you be watching the game?

  78. HiFlyer September 17, 2009 11:41 am

LiL Mermaid – Genji’s for the eastside and I think Pomai and Ralph going to Nancy’s on the westside.

  79. Pride. September 17, 2009 11:43 am

Question for all of you Tsai-kos. If I stuffed your football with a million dollars and made you run down the strip holding your football, would you let anyone take it away from you?

What would you do if anyone tried to strip it from the back, or tackled you to the ground with their head right on the ball? Would you find a way to hold on to it?

The key to victory for the Warriors this week will be to hold on to the football. Do not put the ball on the carpet guys. Hang on to the football.

On defense, go get the million dollars. It’s in the football. You want it, need it, are desperate to get it.

If not, than I can see a few Tsai-kos running onto the field to go get the million dollars. One ore two of them might be desperate by Saturday night.

    GO WARRIORS!

  80. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) September 17, 2009 11:50 am

    Pride.
I hope they post #79 on the locker room door.

I must admit that I yelled HOLD ON TO THE BALL more than one time during the games…

I’m happy to say that I am NOT yelling PASS THE BALL as much as previous times…

    😆

  81. duffer September 17, 2009 12:09 pm

Inside that ball are their dreams and their futures. They can either keep they eye on their dreams and futures or lose sight of it. Similarly, they can hang on to their dreams and not let anyone take their dreams and futures away.

  86. oldie September 17, 2009 12:18 pm

    Tom Mui,

Thanks for posting the book link. Did my duty and voted today.

  88. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) September 17, 2009 12:44 pm

LiL Mermaid- great to see you hanging with the Tsai-kos for the game! It’s gonna feel like old home week. You can just be yourself and have fun. Hint: Nabeyaki Udon is the BOMB at Genji’s. Please tell the gang “Hi!”

  89. Dirty Commish September 17, 2009 12:49 pm

Awwwwwww noooooooooo. Falemalu was developing into quite the playmaker there. Was hoping to get Fonoti back by now too. But it is only game 3 with a bye upcoming and the WAC season has yet to start… so I guess it’s prudent to sit them now.

I’m hoping that having the players being on lockdown will build up some caged rage that they will unleash on the Running (For Their Lives) Rebels.

Blaze, light ’em up, brutha. Pun intended.

    jm2375 #32:

Housing search is completed. I settled on a place in the North Ridge neighborhood of Alexandria, VA. While the place itself was built in the ’40s, it’s been well maintained and is located in a quiet area.

One of the better things about it is the easy commute by mass transit. Ten minute Express bus to the Pentagon, then a five minute ride on the Metro across the river to L’Enfant Plaza. Glad I won’t have to schlep it out on the Beltway every morning. 🙂

  94. postmanke September 17, 2009 1:33 pm

Man, I hope we are deep enough on the D side of the ball for this game. The offense is going to HAVE to take the pressure off of the D. The UNLV receivers will probably be the best core of receivers we will see this year and with their hurry up, no huddle style offense coupled with the high altitude – i dunno man. Tough game! Both QB’s are very good no matter who’s starting for UNLV. This is going to be one hell of a battle. And we will be the home team!

Hello Everyone! Finally up and online after scrambling out of Hono yesterday morning.

Greetings from the 10th floor of Hooters “Bay View” wing. Our end room has a view of Tropicana, MGM, Monte Carlo through Mandalay Bay. I can the Orleans down the road, when d1shima will be checking in tomorrow.

Went to Hooters restaurant last night. I didn’t know their chicken wings was such a popular item–they serve it by the tray and they had 2-3 chefs continuously coating and frying. I remember seeing chicken wings on the buffet menu (the last item) on our cancelled dinner/karaoke bash here. They have a small but adequate breakfast buffet too.

Yup, times are tough-some might say there are cutbacks on the Hooters girls too 🙂

In my haste to get the to the airport yesterday morning (we overslept after being up till 0100 packing), I forgot my watch. I was bummed all day that I forgot it. I kept looking at by watchless wrist. Then I realized that I was too wound up. I don’t need a watch in Vegas–the casinos don’t have clocks either–the only two times I have to watch out for are the dinner/Karaoke bash at Kiku Hana and the Tsai-ko tailgate at CiCi’s.

    …it’s vacation time…slowly sinking in…

…and UH Warrior Football time !!!

  117. mctruck September 17, 2009 3:58 pm

    SteveM,

Took a chance and stayed at Hooters for a few days; I would not recommend that place to anybody. Resturant, nothing to write home about either….although their house baby back ribs was ono. What’s so great about, Dan Marion’s signature resturant????, same place where you have to eat all your meals if you have no desire to step out of that 2star hotel.

  122. ERIC September 17, 2009 4:17 pm

What’s the DEAL with Dustin Blount?
    Will he ever become eligible?

  123. SteveM September 17, 2009 4:17 pm

Hi mctruck — I’ll give the place 2.5 stars as most other ratings I’ve seen. The hotel is old, but was probably grand in it’s time. Hooters makeup on on an old bod, but adequate and affordable I think. The room I have reminded me of the Flamingo, just plainer furnishings. A lot of locals stay here I think–party animals with large ice chests that empty out the ice machine on our floor. I agree about the food–easy to get tired of it but the prices are about the same as Zippy’s and most other restaurants in Hawaii that I can afford to eat at. 🙂

Sunday we catch a cruise ship…got 100+ nights on cruise ships, which are rated 4-5 star…so when I want inexpensive fancy, I cruise… 🙂 Lotsa cruises out of Galveston/Houston and New Orleans….

After Notre Dame failed to respond to her messages, she bought a car and spent the rest. Notre Dame says that she never tried to contact them about the payment error and is now suing her.

Thank you! It will be great to get to see so many Tsaikos again, to watch my girls have so much fun at Circus Circus, and to use the free buffet coupons a casino sent me…but the most important thing is to be there to cheer on the Warriors to another win!

Slugger; Playground is filled EVERYDAY as I just completed a whole 3 month of over 70 inner city children playing on it. Due to NO summer schools being offered because of the recession I was PACKED from 7:00 AM until 6:00 pm closing time. Had to chase 9 year old Regis and Corey from hiding in the corners BECAUSE they would not leave as they had to get that last shot or run tag ONE more time before Mr. Cliff closed it down ! Mahalo for asking !

If any of you good folks in Vegas or Hawaii are awake can you give me directions to CiCis coming from Las Vegas Blvd ? Got the address 9890 S. I just got through e-mailing Las Vegas on the last 4 seats for the Charter bus from CiCis. If he has 2 spots available will be HONORED for the opportunity. If you may see him and add to my request personally while you are there I will appreciate. Will pay when I arrive at CiCis for the charter service & Tsaiko gathering ! Thank you Steve M for your PROFESSIONAL service and help ! Look forward to FINALLY meeting you !

Prizes for guessing the correct scores are not guaranteed. I’ve come closest twice now -once last year and the the first game this year – and never won anything. The purpose is not to win a prize but to guess right!!

DrDoc and I will be watching the first half of the game at a bar called Anyplace on South King. It’s about four blocks closer to the University than Genji’s. Since we’ll be walking from there to the Stan Sheriff Center for the Wahine volleyball match, the shorter difference will make a difference, especially if the first half runs long. NOTE: The food was good and quite reasonably priced plus the waitress was an older local woman who was extremely friendly to us.

We will see what is required against Hawaii, not nearly as talented an opponent as Oregon State and yet one that in its first two games has averaged almost 35 passes and more than 520 yards. Its offense will get the ball in the hands of people who can run. It’s on UNLV to tackle better.

Nice KGMB report on Warrior alums helping coach kids who live in Vegas now that their families moved from Hawaii to Vegas.

Make no mistake, there is a football pipeline from Las Vegas to Hawaii that starts with these seven year olds out of Henderson.

They are the Island Warriors with helmets like UH. The jerseys have names like “Kahananui”, and this team has a number 15 that could be the next Colt Brennan.

“A lot of us moved from Hawaii and we just got all the kids together in in Las Vegas and formed a team in 2003,” said Nua Agatonu, Island Warriors President:

“How many of these kids have local connections?”

    “About 85% on this team.”

When Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin came by to see them practice, the warriors welcomed him with a Haa. It was taught to them by former UH linebacker Brad Kalilimoku.

“I was told it was a story about a pig, he was running away from a bunch of hunters,” said Brad Kalilimoku, former UH player, “and the way the pig would breath would sound like ‘ha he hoo.’ So it was a way for him to try fight back and stuff and that’s the way I try to put the meaning into the team and haa and stuff. That they’re the warriors fight back.”

Brad, his brother Chad, and even Chad Kapanui, all former Hawaii players, are active supporters of this pop warner squad, because they’re hoping to coach them one day. Just like they are the local players at Liberty High School.

“Couple of years ago at Liberty High School, there were just about four Polynesians, ” Former UH Player Chad Kapanui said. “Now there’s like hundreds of them so that’s what we’re trying to build as coaches.”

  188. Garret September 18, 2009 5:39 am

The Liberty High School area that ST mentioned the UH coaches were going to visit has a *lot* of football talent!

Some are already calling these Warriors the New York Yankees of football in Las Vegas, they are proven champions with more than 20 titles in all divisions.

Last request from ANYONE ! an update on the Las Vegas team and game summary of what to expect from both teams ? I know Hawaii is 2-0 but don’t know to much on this Vegas team. I know ONE thing they do want revenge from the whooping that Colt and the Warriors put on them in 2007 ? Will this game be close, low scoring or blow out from either sides ?

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Brother Cliff-
It is truly wonderful to see you back on the blog! As for the game, this will be the toughest test for the Warriors yet, with UNLV supposedly fielding one of their better teams in recent years. Hawai’i will have to bring it’s A game but I personally think the Warriors will win. We have a better team than most outsiders realize, and the Warriors looked unstoppable in parts of the Wazzu game. If we can play hard in both halves, we should win big.

I’m glad you’re hooking back up with everybody, we have missed you!
Big hugs and kisses to you and the Mrs. from all of us!
