UH takes 3 QBs on trip; highly regarded DB commits

Tyler Graunke is not on the 64-player travel roster, much to the disappointment of  family members who had hoped to make the drive from Arizona to the New Mexico State game. UH is taking three quarterbacks — Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki and Brent Rausch.

* * *

Mike Wadsworth, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound defensive back from Silverado High (Henderson, Nev.), has decided to accept a UH scholarship offer. Wadsworth plays cornerback, safety and weakside linebacker on defense, and tailback and wideout on offense. He also returns punts and kickoffs, blocks kicks, and is a punter. He runs 40 yards in 4.5 seconds and 100 meters in 10.9 seconds. He was the leadoff runner in the 4×100 relay team that won the regional championship. And, what’s more, his GPA is better than 4.0 (he takes honors classes).

Here’s his highlight video:

The video strike is over, and Princess Leila, Stanley Lee, Mark Eidson and brother Mike will resume shooting sports videos next Wednesday.

Good news about the videos! Looking forward to the Princess Leila productions!

Just in case Warriors or Warrior fans are thinking about visiting Mexico from El Paso, they might want to read the travel warning from the State Department first. Click on my name for the link. It’s bad enough these days that it’s off-limits to military folks.

    HawaiianbodPride,

Major problems going on now in TJ, it isn’t even safe to be there during the day now. Major conflict between gangs, and between the drug cartel and police.

  30. Garret October 30, 2008 5:19 am

Looks like UH’s turnaround record might be broken this year by Minnesota. Tim Brewster coached at Texas before he became the head coach at Minnesota so I’ve wished him well and am glad for his success. Brewster and 2 other Big 10 coaches make less than Mac, but Brewster will get a big raise after this season.

Two Januarys ago, Brewster arrived at the University of Minnesota, talking about taking Gopher Nation to Rose Bowls, and he went 1-11. Now, suddenly, he’s in contention for a Big Ten Conference championship and more.

Eleven wins would qualify as the biggest turnaround in NCAA history, surpassing Hawaii’s record nine-win improvement in 1999. Brewster’s team already has tied the 1960 Gophers for the greatest one-year victory jump in school history, with six. The Gophers haven’t won 11 games since 1904.

  31. Garret October 30, 2008 5:21 am

    Article on Weber State.

It is too early for the Weber State football team to start thinking about the Division I FCS playoffs. However, it is the right time for Wildcats fans to embrace a winning team and potentially a postseason situation they’ve been craving a long time.

The No. 13-ranked Wildcats, off to their best start in school history, are 5-0 in the Big Sky Conference (7-2 overall) and can clinch the league’s automatic spot in the playoffs with two wins in their last three games. In that scenario, the Wildcats would be 7-1 in the Big Sky and at worst tied with either Montana or Northern Arizona. The ‘Cats would win a tiebreaker since they beat both teams, which play each other this weekend in Missoula, Mont.

Because it has been 17 years since WSU’s last postseason appearance, Graybeal feels it is important for fans and people in the community to understand not only how significant it is for the Wildcats to be in a position to reach the playoffs, but how they can help the Wildcats get a home-field advantage if they do reach the postseason.

“If they win out I think they have a real good shot at being in the top four,” Kasper said. “Having played two FBS teams (Utah and Hawaii), they’ll have a really good resume.”

  32. Garret October 30, 2008 5:23 am

The new rules have cut down the number of plays, which has resulted in lower scores this year.

What’s the scoop on scoring? With the number of plays reduced in 2008 by 6.22% — likely from the 40/25 second clock rules — scoring has decreased by 5.97%, according to Marty Couvillion of cfbstats.com.

  33. Loa October 30, 2008 5:43 am

    morning gang!

welcome to the Warriors Mike Wadsworth!

hmmm, i wonder if he will be majoring in engineering?

  34. Loa October 30, 2008 5:44 am

great news on the return of the Princess Video’s!

C_C – nice homecoming gift for you 🙂

  35. Garret October 30, 2008 5:47 am

My little quote archive for the Warriors got its first sponsor (a bingo website). Since I donate 100% of everything I get from that site to the Warriors, that will mean $300 per year will be donated from that sponsor this year. Hopefully I can get more sponsors and make the donation to Na Koa bigger. All the sponsor wanted was a link on the right hand side of my site, which I was happy to give them for that contribution.

  36. Loa October 30, 2008 5:47 am

Garret – #32 interesting, i wonder if LV adjusted the O/U’s, for entertainment purposes of course

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Welcome to the new Warrior Mike Wadsworth!!

    Welcome back to the videos!!

See everyone later. I hope that ST will give me the practice update today, I am wondering how things are shaping up for the upcoming game.

  42. Loa October 30, 2008 6:02 am

Garret – last nights post about Texas hs qb’s not going under center, how come the experts not bashing them the way they bashed Colt last year? 😡

  43. Garret October 30, 2008 6:08 am

By the way, great job by Tony Tuioti on recruiting! It should be no surprise that some of the players that he coached last season want to play for the Warriors now.

  44. Hank October 30, 2008 6:10 am

….ok, there’s some serious trash being thrown at us at the Utah State blog….but I have to admit that some of this stuff is pretty funny…don’t look if you’re easily insulted, but I thought that some of you might get a kick out of it….go warriors!

    http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=208&f=2746&t=3291176

  45. Garret October 30, 2008 6:11 am

    Loa,

The funny thing is that now the NFL folks are telling Colt McCoy that his draft stock will not be hurt despite him being in the shotgun at Texas. I guess so many teams are using QBs in the shotgun now that NFL teams/scouts are giving up on the criticism…one year late for Colt Brennan.

  46. Loa October 30, 2008 6:19 am

Garret – yep, but then again i think Colt landed in a great situation where he can learn and mature into the position

  47. Garret October 30, 2008 6:25 am

    Loa,

I agree, Colt is in the perfect spot for him. I do wish he was drafted earlier so that he could have gotten a bigger first contract and had more money to do things like support UH. However, Washington used those draft picks before Colt to draft 3 WRs and some other key pieces they needed, so maybe Colt’s long-term future will benefit from the players they drafted before him.

The bad thing about Washington drafting 3 WRs before Colt is that they do not need more young WRs to develop…which means that Colt couldn’t convince Washington to pick up Rivers, Bess, RGM, or Hawthorne.

  48. Garret October 30, 2008 6:26 am

Back to work now. It is always nice for me when ST posts early, so I can do my search for articles in the morning.

  49. d1島 October 30, 2008 6:26 am

    Great Morning All!

    Good news abounds….

    WDoc,
Thanks for the update on DrDoc. You folks take care; probably a message to both of you in this experience.

    Kekoa,
Mahalo for your foresight in securing Cabana Ehhh! for Xmas Eve.

Another Mike W for the roster sounds like a good one!

    Princess? Videos? Hmmm….sounds familiar 😉
    Yippeeee!

    Have a great day erryboddy!

    HiHo….

    Hmmmm…..

  52. d1島 October 30, 2008 6:33 am

    Garret,

Saw that video of the Houston player on Jim Rome. I don’t usually like his commentary, but this time Rome is right. Those band guys have surely left Marshall in a vulnerable position for litigation.

    (Really gotta get rolling now…)

  53. Kekoa (iPhone) October 30, 2008 6:38 am

    Good Thursday morning Tsaiko Ohana!

One final day of services for a family Veteran before being laid to rest. Lots of Ohana in from every island, including the extra large one.

This Uncle turned down a chance to pitch for the NY Yankees to go into the Marines after Pearl Harbor. He earned a chest full of combat awards instead of World Series honors. Because of his
disability, he never played baseball again.

He was a part of the *Greatest Generation.*
    Mai poina Uncle Ezra.

  54. jm2375 October 30, 2008 6:44 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Welcome to the Warrior ohana Mike Wadsworth!

Videos! As Ronnie says, YEEE HAWW!

    Stretch – “marketing” duty today?

One more story from last thread, also from college days back in DC. There were 2 Greek take-out places near Georgetown, 1 run by Greeks and the other run by Koreans. Guess which one was better? The one run by da Koreans was also closer (at the bottom of the “Exorcist” stairs) and open till 2 or 3 am. Late night gyro runs!! hmmmm. Hey what’s for lunch? 😀

Midori – if I show up late to Therapy (late 2nd Q, half-time), would I still be admitted? Wait, I think I’m asking the wrong person. Uhhh, Kekoa-sensei, you gonna let me in?

OK off to work. See you latas.

  55. HawaiianbodPride October 30, 2008 6:46 am

ST on 1500am in a few secs.

  56. Kekoa (iPhone) October 30, 2008 6:48 am

  57. myki October 30, 2008 6:49 am

    Good morning to all!

WD glad to hear that DD is doing well. Do take care of yourself. So often the care giver is so concerned about the patient that they forget about themselves. Your work begins when he gets home so do take care.

Garret, hope that the ultrasound on Katie went well. Keep us informed.

Welcome to another MW. The LV ties continue to grow stronger.

Getting ready for practice. It will be a long time before we can watch them again.

Have a great day and looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

  58. mctruck October 30, 2008 6:53 am

What UH needs is another 3-4 players like Wadsworth.

After watching a discussion on ESPN this morning on which conference the analysts thought was the better non-BCS conference, and at this point in time they all agreed that the MWC was it, I am thinking that say if the Big East continues it’s downward trend for maybe the next year or two, and if the MWC continues it’s strong showing in the top-25, and say asks both Hawaii and Boise to join the MWC , that would make for a strong arguement for the MWC to displace the Big East as a BCS eligible conference???…just a thought.

  59. Postmanke October 30, 2008 7:10 am

Now If we can only land the third amigo from Silverado High DE Keenan Graham the most sought after of the three amigos. This recruiting year is already shaping as the best in UH’s history. Good job coach Mac and company.

We should offer Keenan Graham 2 scholarships – He’s that good!

  60. djmitcho October 30, 2008 7:11 am

Good Morning everyone. It’s good to see another recruit commiting to UH, but like I said yesterday, I’m not getting excited until February and the name has been signed on the dotted line.

Maybe Wadsworth can do a Ryan Mouton…play on defense, offense, and ST.

    Morning everybody!!

  63. Postmanke October 30, 2008 7:28 am

There is another great defensive player in the Vegas area named Sage Nua who is starting to get attention from D1 shcools. I have watched him play a few games and this is another Pisa in the making. His team beat Silverado this year – he played a big part in the victory.

I know he is on UH’s radar. I hope they can land him.

  64. Bulla October 30, 2008 7:32 am

    Garret,

Mahalo for the article on Weber State, truly, wonderful times in Ogden now. we’re headed out tonight to go and support them.

ironically, we’ll be staying in the same hotel as UH and also Portland State, should be interesting. hoping to hook up with ST for a dinner on friday night, maybe he’ll drag RK along and we can do some damage at Ruby River, home of the 16oz ribeye for $18 plus all the ‘fixings’.

have a great day TSAIKOS, good word on DD, mahalo WD

    WHAT A GREAT DAY!
THE Videos from THE Princess are back!
    Another big commit!
    1 more day!
    what else can happen?!?

    Stephen,
does that mean you guys all have contracts now? or just that THE Videos return?

hope DrDoc and WDoc are doing well too.

  66. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 7:37 am

    Morning all…

Good news about the Princess and the video strike.

Hope somebody’s been recharging those video camera battery packs. A lot of times, when those used ones go dead they can’t be resurrected.

Looks like Mike Wadsworth is another Mouton in the making. Outstanding Warrior material.

Why not! UCLA is willing to give up three scholies to get one prized recruit!

  72. bb October 30, 2008 8:28 am

Did anybody get the impression after last nights L&L show with Jim Donovan that given the tough economic times that in the future the WAC may be WHACKED? That it is just too expensive for those bottom teams that have trouble filling up their stadiums and generating revenue that they may not even be able to afford to travel here? That we may be the odd team out not because we are successful and one of the top teams but because traveling to and from here is taking a huge chunk of change out of bleeding athletic department budgets?

  73. midori7 October 30, 2008 8:38 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Great news about our newest recruit!

  75. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 9:06 am

Does Coach Mac really believe that playing my brother more on offense than at cornerback is the answer because I don’t. It’s ok for him to help on offense but his obligation should still be playing defense since they have tabbed him as “The best corner in 10 years.” I don’t understand it and they told him his role on defense would not change. Well I don’t recall him only playing 10 to 15 plays of defense before he started playing slot so obviously they lied to him.

  89. HawaiianbodPride October 30, 2008 9:38 am

Welcome K. Mouton! Thanks for your insight on the issue.

    The Warrior Nation loves Ryan!

  90. 808flowmaster October 30, 2008 9:39 am

K Mouton — If anything, this will help boost Ryan’s prospects for the next level. It would be hard to think that CJ Hawthorne would have stuck on the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills if he had been just a corner. Being able to prove on the field that you can play either CB or WR brings a lot to the table in the NFL. With Ryan’s speed and his ability to shine on defense, offense and special teams, he’ll increase his stock tremendously in the eyes of the scouts.

  91. Committed Road Warrior October 30, 2008 9:43 am

    K. Mouton,

Have you asked your brother about how he feels about the coaching staff shuffling him around from CB to Offense, as demonstrated in the Nevada game? Is he alright with the plans that they have for him away from defense?

Your opinion is just that, your opinion…..but if your brother is fine with the plans that the coaching staff has for him while on Offense, and if the coaches intend on utilizing him in a manner similar to last week’s game, then I guess we really don’t have much say in the matter. We just have to hope that he doesn’t get overused.

  92. HawaiianbodPride October 30, 2008 9:44 am

hi jojo! lucky homey isn’t awake yet or else he would have replied to your comment as follows “i got some videos you might want to watch.” lol.

  93. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 9:48 am

This recruit, Mike Wadsworth… he does everything.
    6’1″ 190 lbs … 29″ veritical jump..
    Rushing 207 yds / 4 TDs
    Receiving 14/187 yds / 1 TD
    KickoffReturn 28 yd average / 1 TD
Punt Return 22 yd averaqe / 3 TD
    Defense 47 tackles / 12 BR

They project him as a safety… I’m wondering, with a few more pounds and strength training, if he might not make a good RB instead?

  94. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 9:50 am

I don’t see a K. Mouton in Ryan’s family and friends on his site. Just Justin, Mitchell, and Mookie J. Mouton.

  95. Robbie October 30, 2008 9:56 am

How come Wadsworth wasn’t even listed in Rivals.com’s Nevada Top 20? While his Hawaii-bound teammate (Alofipo) is #6 and another Hawaii-bound guy (Nobriga) is #11.

  96. Kazz October 30, 2008 10:00 am

  97. duffer October 30, 2008 10:04 am

    Hooiki & Kelli,

Probably at Starlight (sp). whitey’s hangout. He’s trying to get them to open for the game and serve breakfast.

  98. ewagirl808 October 30, 2008 10:45 am

ST you should have your own talk show. You are pretty funny.

  99. d1島 October 30, 2008 10:45 am

    Hmmm…

  100. d1島 October 30, 2008 10:59 am

Well, the team is on their way…

    GO WARRIORS!

  101. al October 30, 2008 11:00 am

    hmmmm…

just as i suspected. club starlite is on lower main street, a.k.a. the darkside.

i guess duffer is leaving keyton home for this one.

i wonder how come whitey never took me there???

  102. d1島 October 30, 2008 11:08 am

    al,

So that should read, “whitey is trying to get them to stay open for the game and serve breakfast.”???

  103. SteveM October 30, 2008 11:14 am

Al and duffer — now you have me curious about Starlite (?). The first cruise I met whitey, I asked him where I could watch the UH game when I next come through with Peaches on the Pride of Aloha. He said he goes to Starlite, but if I had Peaches, I should go to this other place… 😕

Al, you never been there? Maybe you’re not young enough…I bet he took Stretch… 🙂

  104. Kazz October 30, 2008 11:16 am

    ONIPA’A WARRIORS!!!

Have a safe trip as it will be a long one.

The Warrior nation awaits your victories and your safe return!

  105. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 11:23 am

Ryan wants to be a corner first and foremost so Committed Road Warrior don’t tell me what is just my opinion and Madeinhawaii you don’t know what the hell you are talking about. I am Ronald Keith Mouton Jr., brother of Ryan Keith Mouton. The only biological brother Ryan has. There is no Justin Mouton or Mookie so shut up. If you read his profile you will find out I’m the one that played at New Mexico State University so get your facts straight before you question me.

  106. Kazz October 30, 2008 11:25 am

Hmm… Saturday here yet??? I can taste a Warrior victory topped off with a Portuguese Sausage Moco …… 🙂

  107. homey October 30, 2008 11:31 am

XXLiz – I had a few words with Faye at the football game somewhere near the entrance as I was looking for something to eat.

Rob25, jm####, Esme – When you least expect it…BTW, Esme’s detailing bill was only $100.

    Wadsworth sounds like British royalty.

  108. J-Dog October 30, 2008 11:31 am

The UH football schedule seems to be a perfect fit with the HS recruiting. Coach Mack mentioned that after the NMSU game, the staff will continue recruiting in Nevada and California. Then UH plays the remainder of their schedule at home and can catch the State HS football playoffs.

This is gonna be one BIG recruiting year for UH unlike anything we saw from JJ.

  109. Kazz October 30, 2008 11:36 am

Ryan Mouton is a good football player.

  110. SteveM October 30, 2008 11:39 am

    Detailing bill – $100+
    Plastic bucket – $6

homey — bring plastic bucket instead of ice chest… 🙂

  111. duffer October 30, 2008 11:39 am

Backup site is the Ale House, located next to Wendy’s at the Maui Mall.

  112. Jack Flash October 30, 2008 11:42 am

    K. Mouton- why the anger? Chillax a bit before sending out scathing responses. You can’t just expect everyone here to initially take you at your word as a first time blog poster. As for your brother, he is an extremely valuable part of the Warrior Football Team. Emphasis on TEAM brother. I trust the coaches know what they are doing.

  113. SteveM October 30, 2008 11:42 am

BTW homey — if you look the back seat of my car, I’ve got you covered!

Thanks for the ride in your SUV racing machine last week.

  114. J-Dog October 30, 2008 11:44 am

    K. Mouton, I commend your brother for stepping up and being a team player to help our anemic offense. It sucks that he has to sacrifice his primary position because someone else is not performing up to par, but that’s why it’s a team sport. Ryan is a gamer.

  115. homey October 30, 2008 11:46 am

SteveM – You want me to sit on a bucket?

  116. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 11:48 am

    K Mouton

Don’t tell me to shutup. I didn’t say you weren’t the brother.. I just stated a fact… I DON’T see a ‘K. Mouton’ on his site. PERIOD. So Chill.

If you’ve got a problem with your ‘brother’ Ryan being on offense … email or “Call the Coach.” We’re just fans. It’s not our prerogative as to what position any member of the team plays. It’s the coach’s decision, not ours.

  117. homey October 30, 2008 11:48 am

jojo – I’m visual too! But then again I have no problems being blindfolded.

  118. homey October 30, 2008 11:50 am

    Anyone wants a mediator?

  119. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 11:52 am

Jack Flash I don’t need your approval. I’m not here for friends just to give insight. If my brother was lied to he was lied to. But I don’t need anyone giving names of family members that my brother does not have. Again there is no Justin, Mitchell, or Mookie in our family so don’t tell me I’m not Ryan’s brother. Ask Ryan who his brother is and he will tell you that I am and I have always said what he thinks but won’t say because he is a team player. But he would rather be a DB any day of the week.

  120. homey October 30, 2008 11:52 am

Whitey – if I met Stretch at a golf course for the first time my impression would be that he is a scratch golfer.

  121. S Mouton October 30, 2008 11:53 am

sorry all….I apologize for my brothers remarks. He crazy competitive

  122. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 11:58 am

Who is S Mouton because the only S Mouton in my family is me and Ryan’s mother not sister so how I could be their brother I have no clue

  127. lab rat October 30, 2008 12:06 pm

Ryan is the top corner on the team but he is so talented that the team needed his skills on offense and it has worked. The problem is we only have one Ryan Mouton. Once the offense really kicks into gear I suspect we will see Ryan back at his regular spot. Right now the team needs him to do other things to win games. And that is the goal.

  128. Rodney King October 30, 2008 12:06 pm

sorry for the mis-spelling as i was using ebonics.

    it’s all “G” my brother.

  129. 808flowmaster October 30, 2008 12:06 pm

    K. Mouton:

For the supposed son of a pastor, you seem a little unruly and rude. Would he be wanting you to be so abrasive and be telling people to “shut up”? Tsk, tsk.

  133. al October 30, 2008 12:09 pm

    okay…..nuff said already folks.

keith, if that really is you, then welcome aboard.
i know how older brothers take care of younger brothers.

i don’t think ryan’s playing on offense will hurt his chances at the next level. the pros have already scouted him for two and a half years already. they already have a book on him and he will get drafted after he goes through the combines.

i hope he really is 5′ 10″, if not, then his playing on offense will enhance his draftability. i already think that he is a remarkable athlete. he looks very natural at the slotback position. boy, does he have great hands for a guy who played mostly defense all year.

he just could be the next davone bess/wes welker in the nfl with greater speed on top of that!!!!!

….btw, he is one of my favorite warriors. i like the way he carries himself on and off the field.

  134. kaimiloa October 30, 2008 12:12 pm

    K Mouton…

I don’t know how long you’ve been lurking on this blog, but if it’s been a while, then you might have noticed that people sometimes come on here claiming to be someone they’re not. That’s why you were questioned.

Everyone here appreciates what your brother brings to the team and the fans. Its unfortunate if he’s frustrated by the multiple duties. The best case scenario would be for the offense to step up so that he doesn’t have to play out of position.

  135. Jack Flash October 30, 2008 12:15 pm

    K. Mouton- do you ever attend Warrior games here in Hawaii? If so, please come by one of the pregame tailgates to meet us. You’ll find that we all share the same passion for this game of Football. Personally, i’m always open to learning new things about the team and its players.

  136. Rob25 October 30, 2008 12:16 pm

Mouton said his main motivation to play comes from his parents who live in Houston.
This past weekend, Mouton’s father, Ronald, traveled to Las Cruces and stayed just long enough to watch the game and then made it back to Houston in time for church services, where he serves as a pastor.
That kind of dedication has set an example, Mouton said. And it helps remind him that everything he does is part of a plan God has for him.
“Every time I go on the field, I play for him,” he said. “I give thanks for the opportunity to play.”

Your father has everything to do with you! He has helped to shape that person that you are…as indicated in this passage from an article I found about you. I am a Warrior fan first.

Welcome to our blog…it is very interesting to hear from your point of view…please keep on blogging. Thank Ryan for his dedication to the team when you talk to him again.

  137. Ronnie October 30, 2008 12:19 pm

    Aloha Tsaiko Family!

Just catching up on the blog. Lots going on, I see.

Garret – I couldn’t watch the video, but if the player was injured on a band prop, that would be the second serious injury in a month. A Valdosta High school player bruised his spine when his helmet lodged on the wheel casing of a field show prop.

Princess Leila – I can’t wait to see your videos again! YEE HAW!!!

    K. Mouton – Welcome to the blog. Are you Ryan’s older brother? It must be great for him to have someone to vent to. It is also great that Ryan is willing to do what he can to help the team. Hopefully, he will be able to turn the offense over to the other receivers and go back to his favorite position soon.

  138. Koa-mahu October 30, 2008 12:23 pm

R Mouton – are you as handsome as Ryan? Mmmm. Next time you are in Hawaii, holla and i’ll *show you around* big boi.

  139. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 12:24 pm

al its me, keith and if anyone knows me, they know how I am about my brother. Im not arguing the fact that he is playing offense, its the fact that he wants to be a corner and now they have made the decision to play him on offense more than at corner.

  140. Koa-mahu October 30, 2008 12:25 pm

    oops…i meant K Mouton.

  141. Loa October 30, 2008 12:27 pm

    homey – lmffao 😆

  142. Koa-mahu October 30, 2008 12:29 pm

K Mouton – what are your measurements? i just love football playas! holla!!

  143. islandballerz October 30, 2008 12:42 pm

Keith I understand your complaint as Ryan is obviously the best corner on the team, the WAC and possibly the west coast. So by him taking full time slot receiver duties and only playing his natural position 10-15 times a game he is not able to show his talents on the defensive side which may effect his future. However, I really feel that this is only a temporary thing because once Pilares comes back from injury in a week he will be back at his slot/RB position and then they can get Ryan back on defense where we need him. Thank you for your support of the program and we all want what is best for Ryan but we want what’s best for the team first. So maybe in a couple of weeks we can have what’s best for both.

  144. mctruck October 30, 2008 12:46 pm

I don’t know how you people feel, but I wish Mouton had another year of eligibility at UH. We sure could use his invaluble skills on both sides of the ball.

  145. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 12:51 pm

Again, Ryan doesn’t have a problem playing offense. It’s something him and June talked about before he left for SMU and that’s why Ryan was so upset with him for leaving. He didn’t think he would still get the opportunity to play offense with JJ being gone but he also didn’t think that it would become his main position and it’s not what he was told last week. He was told last week that his role on defense would not change and it has tremendously but he does what is asked of him and won’t say anything because he doesn’t want to be a distraction to his team but he would prefer to play corner.

  146. d1島: October 30, 2008 12:52 pm

    K Mouton,

Welcome to the WB. I respect your decision to speak out on behalf of your brother and have enjoyed watching him play for the Warriors.

For the short term, it would appear that Mack does think Ryan playing with the offense is an answer. The results from the past week seem to prove it. I’m sure everyone hopes that his example will have the effect of raising other players’ game. Seems to have had that effect, hope it continues.

If the plan was that he would continue at CB while also playing slot then that assumes a lot of playing time to the point where maybe his effectiveness starts to wane in one or both roles; that’s a lose-lose for everybody.

Your assertion that he was “lied to” seems to imply that he had little to no choice in the decision. Your further insight would be appreciated.

  147. d1島: October 30, 2008 12:54 pm

    K Mouton,

    Saw your last post.
Seems to answer my last point
    Thanks

    Go Warriors!

  148. al October 30, 2008 12:56 pm

    keith,
we must all trust that the coaches are doing what is good for the team. coach mack is a players’ coach and would not do something to harm his players. coach mack having been in the nfl and still with all the contacts in the nfl will be able to enhance ryan’s opportunities in the future.

remember one of the greatest cornerbacks in the nfl history, okay, two of them, were such great athletes that on occasion they played wide receiver, that being darrell green and deion sanders.

i think once ryan gets in to the end zone a couple few times he will start to enjoy his time at receiver.

  149. mctruck October 30, 2008 12:59 pm

I think coach Mac sees Ryan Mouton in other roles besides just cb; having that insight for Ryan is a good thing because at the next level, who knows where Ryan will fit in?? So, playing at different positions might be a blessing in disguise for Ryan. Just my opinion.

  150. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:01 pm

Al – that is exactly my point. Deion and Charles Woodson who happen to be Ryan’s 2 favorite corners(and also wore #2) played receiver on OCCASION, they weren’t relieved of their corner duties and that is the way Ryan would prefer to have it. Corner first and helping on offense as much as they need him not receiver first and only playing his natural position 10-15 plays a game

  151. al October 30, 2008 1:01 pm

i believe that if ryan was an occasional slot back, then, the defenses would key on him whenever he entered the offensive sets, thus, making his opportunities more difficult.

as it was last week, he had a good game. can you imagine how good he will get on offense as the weeks go by?

ah, but, the catch-22 of it all is that we did miss his make up speed on defense last week, especially on those two long runs.

the only answer is to “clone” him.

  152. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:05 pm

The defense keying on him can be a good thing when other receivers are running around wide open because of all the attention he is receiving.

  153. al October 30, 2008 1:07 pm

the real concern is, that as a team, we are thin at slotback, if you know what i mean. therefore, enter mouton.

for me, every time he touches the ball, i am anticipating that he will take it to the house no matter where he is on the field.

i was most impressed with his ability to catch the ball like he has been doing this all his life and his innate football sense to find an open spot when the qb was scrambling about looking for an open man. all this from just 2-3 days of intense practicing.

what he is doing now for the team will only enhance his opportunities in the future.

  154. d1島: October 30, 2008 1:10 pm

    K. Mouton,

    Moment of truth:

If you read his profile you will find out I’m the one that played at New Mexico State University

Who you cheering for next week? 😉

  155. d1島: October 30, 2008 1:13 pm

    K. Mouton,

    Last question.

What were your thoughts about Ryan stepping in at Safety late last season after Patek got hurt?

  156. Garret October 30, 2008 1:13 pm

    K Mouton,

Welcome to the blog! Your brother is an amazing player and he will be playing in the NFL next season, and Warrior fans everywhere will follow him to see how he does.

I do understand how there could be some frustration over Ryan’s role. I was surprised at his full-time duty at slotback and part-time duty at CB (basically as the nickleback). However, if this is a short-term change due to Pilares’ injury, then I don’t think it will affect Ryan’s draft evaluation at all. If Pilares is forced to stay at RB due to injuries, then the coaches will have a decision to make.

Ryan is doing a great job for the team and did a great job at slotback even if he wasn’t completely happy about the move. The coaches have to do what is best for the team and I hope that they have explained the situation to Ryan and explained how long his part-time role on defense is expected to last.

  157. al October 30, 2008 1:15 pm

    off the ryan subject…………..

so keith, where can you be found these days?

  158. d1島: October 30, 2008 1:15 pm

    Wow.
    Very interesting travel roster decision.

Wonder how long the Graunke’s had this Saturday circled on their calendar?

  159. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:16 pm

Don’t forget he caught the game winning touchdown in the 5A Texas Stet Championship to beat Chase Daniels and his Southlake Carroll team 16-15. and he also played offwnse in Juco. It’s not the first time he has played offense. And don’t forget he is the brother of a 5A Texas 1st Team All State Wide Receiver- Me. lol

  160. d1島: October 30, 2008 1:16 pm

    Sorry, next Saturday.

  161. Garret October 30, 2008 1:16 pm

One reason why I think this move is temporary–Pilares made the trip and is expected to be ready for the NMSU game. NMSU throws the ball a million times or so per game, so Ryan will be needed on defense on each play.

Nevada mostly ran the ball, so CBs would see much action except for run support (which the other CBs could do well, except for not catching the runner on long runs) and pass defense on 3rd downs (when Ryan was put in the game). So, Nevada’s offense seemed to make Ryan more valuable on offense than defense…and NMSU’s offense seems to make Ryan more valuable on defense.

  162. Garret October 30, 2008 1:18 pm

I didn’t expect Tyler to make the trip, as he was demoted after the last game and he’s still not healthy. I thought that Austin might make the trip as scout team QB…I guess Rausch is scout team QB for the trip? The bad thing about that is that Rausch wouldn’t be learning the offense…but at least he’ll be practicing against an excellent D.

  163. al October 30, 2008 1:18 pm

interesting moves regarding the qb situation. not that alexander is starting, more so that rausch will travel and graunke isn’t. perhaps there are some underlying currents that we are not aware of.

  164. d1島: October 30, 2008 1:18 pm

So BR is running Scout QB?

  165. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:22 pm

I’m going on record- I AM CHEERING FOR THE WARRIORS. I HAVE NO LOVE FOR NMSU.

I was in Hawaii for the Washington game last year and had no problem with Ryan playing safety when Patek got hurt and then Desmond also. He showed how smart he is on the field. Ryan is really smart altogether, he only went to Juco because he played around in high school but him, having to go to Juco has really woke him up and him being in Hawaii has relly helped his maturity.

Al- Im in Houston where i am one of the supervisors of the security at Reliant Stadium where the Texans play.

  166. d1島: October 30, 2008 1:23 pm

Hopefully, the Defense got all the “looks” it needed to for the USU QB before they left.
BR is much better suited to emulate the NaMaSU guy 😉

  167. Garret October 30, 2008 1:34 pm

The blog went silent for quite some time so I’m going to post some links.

Nike is preparing for BSU to get to a BCS Bowl. I don’t remember them doing this for the Warriors last year…

Sports merchandise giant Nike is preparing Boise State merchandise for potential appearances in the Orange, Fiesta, Sugar and Rose bowls.

Don’t get too excited: Nike is doing the same for all of its schools with a chance at the Bowl Championship Series.

“As a fan, it’s cool for me to be a part of the process. You start getting your hopes up. This is going to be pretty cool,” said Travis Hawkes, the owner of the Blue and Orange Store, who visited the Nike campus for a sneak peek at their Fall 2009 line of Boise State merchandise.

While there, he got a look at the bowl game gear.

Nike and Hawkes made similar preparations during the 2006 season as the Broncos headed toward an eventual Fiesta Bowl appearance.

    Tyler-

  169. Garret October 30, 2008 1:37 pm

The University of Florida has told one of its players to not talk to the media about their political beliefs. Interesting that Spikes cannot talk about his support for Obama but Tebow can talk about his support for McCain.

UF linebacker Brandon Spikes has been outspoken about his political interests. In recent weeks, Spikes has worn T-shirts advertising one of the large-party Presidential candidates. On Tuesday evening following the Gators’ practice, Spikes was asked why he supports that candidate. Spikes’ political voice was silenced by the University of Florida.

He replied “I can’t really comment on that” to the initial question and when asked if UF instructed him to do so, Spikes said yes.

No big deal, right? Spikes is just a college football player, right? He’s just supposed to play football, make millions for UF and keep his mouth shut, right?

Well, if you believe college football is something more than just a business then it is certainly wrong. Why would UF instruct Spikes to refrain from giving his opinion? I’ll let you guys answer that question. But in muzzling Spikes, UF has set an unfair double standard. UF quarterback Tim Tebow has been using his fame and his First Amendment rights for several years.

  171. Garret October 30, 2008 1:39 pm

I haven’t read about the Warriors discussing their political beliefs in the papers…and I like that, since sports provides a nice break from politics. Monday Night Football watchers will not get such a break because both Presidential candidates will be interviewed there on the day before the election.

ESPN says the presidential candidates are planning to participate in one-on-one interviews via satellite that would air at halftime of “Monday Night Football,” the day before the election.

ESPN’s Chris Berman will do the segments earlier Monday, if the candidates’ schedules permit, and they’ll air at about 10:15 p.m. EDT.

  172. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:39 pm

They hated on Hawaii all year last year but they couldn’t deny the BCS birth in the end and @ the Sugar Bowl the Warrior fans showed that there are no better fans as they stayed til the last second of the 41-10 beaten and supported their beloved team.

  173. Garret October 30, 2008 1:41 pm

Article about how Arizona, NMSU, SDSU, Stanford, UNLV, Utah State, UTEP, Washington, and Wyoming might have new coaches next season. Since UH is going to play Utah State and NMSU next, I’ll just post those sections.

UTAH STATE: The Aggies are 1-7, bringing Brent Guy’s three-years-plus victory total to … seven. Barring a dramatic turnaround, which could only be caused by a realignment of the sun and the moon, Guy’s gone.

If the Aggies were smart: They’d make a run at Kent Baer, the former Stanford/Notre Dame/Washington defensive coordinator (Baer’s coaching was not the problem in Seattle, as the Huskies’ performance this year proves). Baer, currently an assistant at San Jose State, is a Utah State alum and has family in Logan.

NEW MEXICO STATE: Hal Mumme’s in his fourth year. He has yet to post a winning record, has yet to beat New Mexico and just lost to Idaho. That’s a bad combination if you’re Hal Mumme.

If you’re an up-and-coming coach who thinks you can win in las Cruces, it’s a good combination.

If the Aggies were smart: They’d attempt to hire Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen.

With a small in-state talent pool, NMSU needs someone with recruiting ties to Big 12 territory and the west coast. Christensen has been at Mizzou for eight years, is a former Washington player/assistant and also recruits the Arizona junior colleges.

    K. Mouton,

Are you going to be able to make it Hawai’i for the Senior Night game? I’m bringing my boys with me from California so they can experience the Senior Walk from the fans perspective. (I just hope they allow more fan/player interaction than they did last year).

  176. Garret October 30, 2008 1:45 pm

    K Mouton,

I was at the Sugar Bowl with my parents and the Hawaii fans in our section stayed until the end of the game. What I’m unhappy about with the news about Nike and BSU is that Nike is openly preparing for BSU to make it to a BCS bowl and is already ready with their merchandise, just like they were in 2005. Where was that type of support for the Warriors last season? Did they assume that the Warriors were going to lose so they didn’t need to bother preparing for them?

  177. Ronnie October 30, 2008 1:45 pm

    Hi Rob!!!

    Welcome home!

  178. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:45 pm

NMSU will never win. My (R)Freshman year we were 7-5 and beat New Mexico and they finished 6-6 and they were still invited to the Las Vegas Bowl to play UCLA instead of us. They should just give up.

  179. Garret October 30, 2008 1:47 pm

    Maverick,

I do hope that Tyler gets a lot of time to rehab his injury and get into game shape during these two weeks away from the team. Also, if Tyler has a problem with academics, it would seem to be a good thing for him to not miss over a week of classes.

  180. Ralph October 30, 2008 1:48 pm

I wonder what coach mac and ryan will be thinking after they read today’s blog?We all know the coaches read the blog and some of the players do. so would it be possible for the master, ST, to follow up and ask ryan and coach mac- what’s up!

  181. Garret October 30, 2008 1:48 pm

    K Mouton,

It all has to do with conference bowl tie-ins. The WAC had just three spots and the MWC had 5 or 6 back then. This year the WAC might get lucky, since the Pac-10 might not be able to fill one of their spots so the WAC might have 4 bowl spots…5 if BSU makes the BCS.

  182. Garret October 30, 2008 1:51 pm

Was it Idaho, Utah State, and NMSU who were *all* in danger of losing their D-IA status due to poor attendance? I would guess that their struggles hurt their attendance, so they might be forced to drop down divisions. And if that happens the WAC is in big trouble.

  183. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 1:53 pm

Ralph, while 01(Grice-Mullen) was here he was injured with a hamstring injury. We spent days together as I tried to encourage him to keep a positive outlook on his situation but in the end, his injury stopped him from showing the coaches his talent. I also spoke with Daunte Robinson and he thought he had a chance to make it had he not been injured. The Bears gave him a small shot but he didn’t get enough time there either. He is now in Canada staying in shape in case another call comes from the NFL from what he told me the last time we talked. I also had a chance to spend some time with Davone a few weeks ago when they played the Texans. We grabbed a bite to eat the Saturday before the game and he seemed to be enjoying his time in Miami.

Ronnie- I wouldn’t miss Ryan senior day for anything. I have already informed my job I will quit if they tried to deny me going to Ryan’s Senior Day.

  184. Ronnie October 30, 2008 1:54 pm

How awesome would it be for Ryan to score an offensive, defensive, and special teams touchdown all in the same game?!?! Pretty Darn Awesome!

  185. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 1:55 pm

    K. Mouton.

My apologies for doubting whom you might be, but when you came on the blog with what seemed like an attack on Coach Mac, I had my doubts. Especially since none of us are/were privy to the conversation between Ryan and McMackin.

Like everyone here, I’m a fan of Mouton, too. Look at how I was describing Mike Wadsworth, hoping he’d be anything like Ryan. Ryan will be sorely missed after this year.

There are hundreds of corners our there trying to make it to the next level. Ryan will set himself apart, not just in how good a corner he has been, but how good an athlete he is, period. I don’t think there is any of us here who doubts that Ryan will be an early draft choice.

    Anyway… welcome to the blog.

Oh yeah… If you’re curious as to what ‘site’ I was referring to, it’s this one…

Thought about that too Ronnie but now that he is playing offense, he no longer returns kicks so I don’t know if that will happen

  187. Committed Road Warrior October 30, 2008 1:57 pm

    K. Mouton,

Assuming that your Redshirt Freshman year was prior to NMSU’s inclusion into the WAC in 2005, weren’t they in the Sun Belt conference, with their resultant 1 bowl bid?

  189. jm2375 October 30, 2008 2:02 pm

    Garret,

BC had an interview this am with the beat writer from Logan paper. He said that word on the street is that John L Smith is a front-runner for the job. Gee, that means da guy has to come to Hawaii every other year. 😈 hehehehe. BTW, Brent Guy’s current base salary is $275K. Gee, maybe they can get a JC coach for that amount.

  190. Ronnie October 30, 2008 2:02 pm

I wondered why he wasn’t returning kicks anymore. That’s a bummer. I think I’ll have to make a sign for the cincy game to encourage Coach Mac to let Ryan have his “hat trick”. 😀

Ok, time to start dinner. Blog you all later.

Madeinhawaii- we got off to a bad start but if you haven’t noticed I am very competitive and especially when I know i have helped mold Ryan into the player he is today. If you ever get a chance, ask him how he works hard to prove me wrong whenever I tell him he can’t do something as seen with his hands. Ryan couldn’t catch a cold his sophomore year of high school and I stayed on him about his ball skills to where he now has decent hands that still can be worked on a little. No hard feelings against you tho. If you go back to that same website and click on Rachel Gil’s profile ask her waht Ryan’s brother name is and about me going to Katy with her brothers Reny and Ricky Gil. I have no reason to lie. Ryan is my baby brother and I still remember the night he was born exactly 3 years and 17 days after me on September 23, 1983

Come on J Dog I said I’m in Houston not Dallas though my entire family are Cowboys fans.

Committed Road Warrior you are correct, we had not joined the WAC yet and the bowl tie-ins are stupid when you have head to head knowledge like I gave.My point is, they will probably never produce a 7-5 season again anytime soon so that was the best chance we had at going to a bowl game.

  195. Cheyah! October 30, 2008 2:12 pm

I sort of agree with Keith. I want Ryan to play full time D rather than playing more on O. I know its the coaches decision and it may be short term but when he’s in on D, Ryan is usually around the ball on every play. Giving him a couple of plays on O is alright but not to sacrifice his position on D where he is far more valuable.
Keith thanks for your insight and I hope Ryan gets back to his position full time.

    Go Warriors!

Hawkes said Nike is making plans and, just like all pundits, forecasting the probability of certain teams making certain games. He said Nike’s projected order for Boise State is Orange, Fiesta, Sugar and Rose.

    🙄

Nike chose not to step up, but this season and at least for seven more Under Armour did.

I don’t regret getting rid of all my UH Nike gear.

    Nike can shove it!

  197. Committed Road Warrior October 30, 2008 2:12 pm

    Also for K. Mouton,

Now that you’ve tempered down a bit, I apologize for coming off kind of rough earlier today. You made quite a grand introduction to say the least…..one that would have easily put you on my ignore list had you not spent the time to corroborate your side of the story. As madeinhawaii noted, when you come on the blog and make an introductory post that was highly critical of Coach Mac, then proceed to rip some of us apart because we don’t see eye-to-eye with you, we just couldn’t take your word. Now that you’ve established who you are to us:

    Welcome to the blog!

You’ll find that many of the regular folks here are very friendly in nature. It’s unfortunate that Ryan had to be pressed into the offensive scheme last game as much as he did, but given Nevada’s pass-defense (or lack thereof), it seemed sensible that the coaches decided to go this route in using him. Also Coach Mac said at the WAC Media Day in the Spring that he intended on using Ryan on offense in certain situations…..we were just wondering when that would actually come to fruition.

  198. Kazz October 30, 2008 2:14 pm

    Garret,

Let’s not forget about the plain white pants we wore during the Sugar Bowl…

JJ said that the pants couldn’t be done in time…

    Well um… since NIKE was our outfitters last year… um… yeah… THANKS NIKE… THANKS… 🙄

  199. A-House October 30, 2008 2:15 pm

WELCOME TO THE UH FAMILY, Mike Wadsworth and hope you enjoy your time in Hawaii and playing for the Warriors!!!

    thank you, Coach Tony Tuioti!!!!

  200. Committed Road Warrior October 30, 2008 2:18 pm

Also about the NMSU 7-5 season (which I believe was 2002). It sucks that your team finishes the year with a winning record and is not selected for a bowl game, even an at-large spot.

Hawai’i fans certainly felt the same way after the 2001 season when we finished 9-3 and not a bowl game to go to. Luckily, the Hawai’i Bowl in its current form was established the following year.

  201. lab rat October 30, 2008 2:18 pm

K Mouton Ryan is a very good kick returner but if I can remember correctly coach Mack did not want him to get hurt because one of the problems they had on kick returns was blocking and your brother was taking some vicious hits.

  202. J-Dog October 30, 2008 2:19 pm

Im sorry, but under armour’s tshirt designs so far are garbage. In fact, if you go to the UH bookstore, I’d say there’s more Nike tshirts there than under armour.

  203. Kazz October 30, 2008 2:19 pm

    Speaking of Nike…

I recall the home game vs Utah State where it had rained. Not like the kind of rain we had this past weekend but enough rain to notice and to get fairly wet.

Well… I had my UH Nike jersey on and a Nike undershirt… I got sick the next day….

This season I wore my UA jersey, under shirt, under wear, and shorts and it rained like a beast this past Saturday and sure enough I didn’t get sick… because…. I DRIED UP QUICKLY!!! Hahahahahahahaha!!!

Both cases I made sure to go home and take a hot shower.

Now of course NO ONE in the right mind would sit in the rain without trying to shield themselves from the elements… but I’m just saying… hahahahahahahaha!!!

Ok the Nike bashing is pau.

  204. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 2:20 pm

Just Saying – that article is somewhat true. Coach Samuel wanted to meet with me to talk about me staying but at that point I had had enough. I was on the phone after the game with my father letting him know I was done playing for the Aggies but the newspaper did contact me on my cell phone, I told them I had no wish to speak to the media because they saw for themselves what was going on. That last game I was apart of the team, our starting quarterback, Paul Dombrowski, played numerous drives at my runningback position and I did not touch the field at all. This was after I had played well and Dombrowski, one of our offensive captains, had asked for my role to increase. Imagine averaging 7.5 yards a carry against the Texas Longhorns and then moving down the depth chart with no explanation from anyone.

  205. Stephen Tsai October 30, 2008 2:24 pm

Hey, so, uh, is everything all right in here? (I’m trying to write my story before I leave.)
Actually, we got to spend some time with Ryan Mouton and Malcolm Lane yesterday. They were featured speakers at a function at KCC.
Ryan seems to enjoy playing on offense, but, yes, his future will be as an NFL cornerback. The scouts all say that he is UH’s best pro prospect (although I’m sure Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian and David Veikune also merit high consideration).
The main thing is the combine, which he should be invited to. He also has been invited to play in two all-star games, although he’s awaiting word from the Senior Bowl.

  206. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 2:24 pm

Lab rat you are also correct. He said Ryan was being punished on kickoff and whoever was late to a meeting would be the returner so they could be punished instead.

  207. Kazz October 30, 2008 2:25 pm

    J-Dog,

Ok I will admit that UA’s polos and shirts are lacking in design. Im pretty sure I have all the UH-related ones, but I’d like to get the sideline ones that some of the staff have. They’re white with green trim on the shoulders. I think those are “exclusive” stuff like the UA coaches shirts they wear with the tapa print on the sleeves. Maybe more things will be released later.

As for golf UA polos, they do have some nice designs, but they are not UH-related.

As for the tee shirts… the gray and black ones are pretty “ghetto” in design and look like UA rip-offs more than anything. They need to improve on this.

  208. J-Dog October 30, 2008 2:26 pm

Let’s not forget about the plain white pants we wore during the Sugar Bowl…

JJ said that the pants couldn’t be done in time…

    Well um… since NIKE was our outfitters last year… um… yeah… THANKS NIKE… THANKS…

Goes to show where a 12-0 Hawaii team was on the Nike priority list. Hopefully UnderArmour will give us more attention since I believe they only outfit less than 10 NCAA teams.

I still think UA needs to step up their tshirt designs for the fans….and what’s with all their tshirts being made with the “heatgear” material?

  209. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 2:29 pm

Again Ryan is a team player. He knows what to say to the team and the media. As I said earlier he doesn’t mind playing O but he would prefer to play corner any day. He loves to have the ball in his hands and As I stated before, playing O was something he and JJ had discussed before his departure so he does want to do it but he would rather not compromise playing his corner spot to play more O than D.

  210. jojo ® October 30, 2008 2:32 pm

  212. dj October 30, 2008 2:34 pm

Welcome to the blog, K. Mouton! It’s always great to hear the unique perspectives of the players and their families.

Once Pilares comes back from injury, it would be great to see Ryan play a role similar to the one Devin Hester played last year for the Bears. That is, primarily playing DB and returning kicks and only going on offense for about 5 plays per game. I think Ryan is by far UH’s best kick returner and DB, and it would be nice to see him doing damage in those positions. Also, like K. Mouton said, Ryan could come in on offense and distract defenders from the other UH’s receivers.

  213. Stephen Tsai October 30, 2008 2:35 pm

Tell you what: Ask me about a player, and I’ll tell you if he’s on the travel roster.

  214. dj October 30, 2008 2:35 pm

    hi jojo!

  215. Kazz October 30, 2008 2:35 pm

    J-Dog,

I think UA is just trying to establish their gamegear stuff first. Nike is tops in all aspects of the game in terms of equipment (some, NOT hockey as I can testify 🙄 , marketing, and fan appeal).

UA is trying to get a grip on the footwear market with their new breed of cross-trainer shoes and their football cleats…. although I’ve heard some accounts of players here and elsewhere having issues with the footwear…

As for their workout gear I have no problem. They feel better and are more comfortable.

But yes, their “heatgear” material is their bread and butter and unless its a hoodie everything is made out of it. The whole “Cotton Is The Enemy” thing is really what they practice so I don’t think there will be much changes to that.

  216. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 2:36 pm

How high Ryan goes in the draft can only be a big plus for the Warriors and I’m sure we’ll see him back as corner to close out the season. But, the pro-scouts who have been eyeing him must be scratching their heads and smiling from ear-to-ear to see what a quick study and all-around athlete he is.

  217. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 2:38 pm

It’s unfortunately that Blaze, Graunke, Austin, Santos, etc. won’t be making the trip. As for Blaze, does that mean they’ll be seeking a medical redshirt for him? It’d be one heck of a waste to burn up the possibility of one more playing year by putting him in only 3 games this season at most.

  253. WarriorMojo October 30, 2008 3:45 pm

    K. Mouton, thanks for posting to the board. Ryan has been one of my favorite players since last year. That guy is like lightning. I was in Vegas when he took that one to the house and it was unreal. Everybody else was moving in slow motion. From time to time I’ve wondered if he was happy here so I’m VERY glad to see you say that being in Hawaii has been good for Ryan.

Anyway, do you think Ryan would be reluctant to tell Mack that he wants to limit his play on O so that he can focus on D? If he feels that way, he really should say something. I think Mack would honor that.

Finally, any other Warrior prospects in the Mouton clan?

  258. K. Mouton October 30, 2008 3:58 pm

Warriormojo- Ryan just does what is asked of him. He will let some know how he feels deep inside but for the most part he just wants to win and will do anything except cheat to do so. As for any more Moutons, Ryan is the baby of the family for now so no such luck there. Funny because that was the same question many asked after we were both done at Katy High School.

The thing that bothered me most about Mouton and Monteilh is that they both gave up their hilarious “best hair” competition and went with the crew cuts. (Maybe it had something to do with the HA video strike?) Now “Futon” Mouton’s got the responsible look. While doing very well at slotback. Both, I think, will be big plusses when the Combine and NFL Draft day come around.

…. Take our 2006 and 2007 offense, place it in ANY other division one college uniform other than UH and it no longer is a “system” and the SAME players are no longer “system” athletes in which their stats are “inflated”.

The bias and ignorance goes further than Xs and Os. Period.

I mean… seriously… what the hell is Texas Tech supposed to be? What the hell is Graham Harrell supposed to be? A good QB? Sure, but why is he not a “system QB” in a pass-heavy offense?????????

Pike was Cincy’s starting QB until he broke his arm against Akron in September. He started last week but came out after going 10-27 with one TD and one interception. According to the recap on ESPN, he had lost feeling in his throwing hand.

don’t you know Craig James and all the media this year thinks its cool to pass alot? we were the freak school that was just a “system” offense. yet all the crazy passing QBs like McCoy and Harrell and the OK & Missouri qb are all just running great offenses that aren’t “system” at all.

    its a conspiracy.

I mean… seriously… what the hell is Texas Tech supposed to be? What the hell is Graham Harrell supposed to be? A good QB? Sure, but why is he not a “system QB” in a pass-heavy offense?????????

    Kazz,

This is bordering on a complex by you and other Warrior fans. I’ve seen some post in agreement since your post and I’ve seen many, many others post the same thing. I know that we are homers for UH and most don’t follow what is being said about other teams, but I think I should clarify this issue once and for all.

The fact is that Texas Tech’s QBs have been labeled system QBs (well before they put the label on Colt) for many, many years. Texas Tech had many QBs in a row that put up *huge* numbers and every one was labeled a system QB by NFL draft “experts”. And even though they didn’t have the weight problems that Colt had, they had their NFL draft stock plummet, some even worse than Colt (who at least was drafted).

The facts are that I’ve seen Texas Tech QBs labeled “system QBs” in more articles than I’ve seen UH QBs labeled that. That is because Texas Tech gets more coverage than UH around the country.

I read probably 30 preseason Heisman prediction articles (I posted several here), and Texas Tech’s Harrell was named in each one…and in each article he was called a “system QB” and couldn’t win the Heisman because of that. In fact, most articles specifically said that he was a system QB that would be hurt by the label like Colt was, and that the huge stats he was going to put up this season would be discounted by Heisman voters because of his “system”.

I’ve watched every Texas Tech vs. Texas game since 1985, and ever since they switched to this pass-heavy offense their QBs were labeled “system QBs” when people looked for all-conference or All-America honors, or draft status.

  294. Kazz October 30, 2008 5:44 pm

    Garret,

I’ll be the first one to admit I have 😆 issues 😆 with the “Hawaii Bias” in college football (which we homers love to point to when UH isn’t given enough respect).

Honestly speaking I thought I would have buried all of that during the offseason as I promised someone that I would cease all emotions and comments towards the mainland media in regards to UH as deep down I think we all could care less what they think.

It does make me feel better that Harrell is getting some flack, but at the same time while they can call him a “system QB” and they’ve called Colt and Timmy a “system QB”, it seems that the “system” label has a lot more weight on Hawaii.

Now we all know of Timmy’s numbers at UH and his struggles in the pros and of course we all know Colt’s success and his potential of playing at a higher level thus far so those are two different things, but just in general I think a lot of Hawaii fans feel slighted towards the mainstream sports media and a lot of us are searching for some “respect” in general.

I have no problem saying that this can be a complex some of us fans may have and I am proud to be a “homer” (I wish there were more of us as it would be good for home-based support) but at the same time I can see the fine line between bias and fact, it’s just that I still feel the “bias” more than anything.

    Eh.. I’m nutz… what can I say? 😆

    Contest #1: 102, 46

    Contest #2: 205, 52

  296. Kazz October 30, 2008 5:51 pm

I think if more people that harbor “what about us, what about UH” feelings into some actions, attendance would be greater, merchandise sales would increase, and the overall morale amongst the fans of UH would be greater.

I think it gives us more to rally together about, I think subconsciously it gives us a feeling of belonging (i.e. “Us VS Them) to something bigger than ourselves, and I think it just gives us an identity.

For those that don’t have these feelings and are able to do all the above without them then more power to them, but for some of us this adds to our drive and our passion.

Is it mentally healthy? Who knows? It’s just sports right?… Then again the physical hazards at games can lead to second-guessing.

(I think my right hand has fully healed and ready to punch my chair in frustration again in time for the Idaho home game….)

  297. Pomai October 30, 2008 5:54 pm

Kazz I think it’s more frustrating because guys like Craig James where putting Colt down for being a system QB, but are in fact not doing the same for the others, such as Harrell, they are actually saying what a great QB he is and his stats are super great. They are in fact bias towards Hawaii, IMHO there is no question. But the Good thing is that Colt will prove all the nay sayers wrong.

  298. Jason October 30, 2008 6:05 pm

The thing is this — yes, UH (and Texas Tech) offensive players are system players. Yes, that has the potential to hurt them. But if you’re really good at scouting players, you can see past the system and see the potential. Colt has loads of potential. Timmy and the Texas Tech guys (including Harrell) — little potential. As long as there is one smart guy out there keeping an eye out, those deserving players will get their shot.

In a way, the stigma is fair. It’s just the inconsistent and improper use of that term that irks people. But I don’t let it bother me anymore. In the end, I just say, “I’m a better talent evaluator than them, why should I care.” 😀

  299. madeinhawaii October 30, 2008 6:09 pm

Well, one thing is for sure, JJ is in the area he needs to be if he’s going to shoot for the big C. I guess they won’t call his QB a system QB anymore, eh?

Wow.. no good you hurt your right hand punching the chair… You gotta be more careful. Can cost money, you know? You might broke the chair!

No no no… way ahead of you.. See, the trick is to punch the HARDEST part of the chair with no give. I find that the best spot is the middle of the back where it has the concave angle. That way there is WAY more chance of you breaking your hand than the chair.

There is no way I’m getting kicked out for destroying state property and then getting banned from Aloha Stadium. There is no way I can live with being banned from home games. The hand can always heal… having to live without watching UH football in person… that’s just unacceptable!

Oh… and then there’s your head. Its a good thing to hit in frustration over bad referee calls because you only hurt yourself and if you get a little blood trickling down it just adds to the intensity of the moment! If you ever tasted your own blood before during an intense moment then you can appreciate the 😈 FIRE 😈 that will never go away inside!

    CHEEEHOOO!!!!

  314. chawan_cut October 30, 2008 6:41 pm

    kazz,
where would all the hawaii fans show up from? they won’t let us park in the swap meet parking lot. would we walk over from the tsaiko tailgate?

and we’re not playing any big enough teams for them to do a college gameday. i would’ve thought they would have it for our boise vs hawaii game last year.

  315. Kazz October 30, 2008 6:45 pm

    Chawan,

I can guarantee that if you stick a camera crew in the middle of a parking lot on ANY gameday at Aloha Stadium people would show up.

IF this would happen, and IF I were John McNamara I would put out word to the Manoa Maniacs about this and then get them together and have them be the “background”.

Of course… unless someone yells at them to be quiet and then throws their saimin at them to drive the point home… 🙄

And I agree, there is a definite “bias” to Hawaii from mainland analysts, sports casters, etc. who will find every excuse to put down Hawaii.

Jason, my boy, while I agree that we may be better judges of talent, unfortunately, our opinions don’t count while people like Craig James may/do. It’s really a slap in the face to Hawaii.

But, some day, when Hawaii is consistently ranked in the top 15 for football and other sports, their spoken words may change. Hope I’m still alive to hear it!!!!!!!!

That was a pretty lame attempt, then, chawan_cut. Trying to impress someone, eh … 😉

A-House: Yeah, I know what you mean. That’s why I understand why people get ticked off about it. I just don’t let it bother me, or I’ll drive myself to many more white hairs. 🙂

  330. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 30, 2008 9:53 pm

Hmm! Very interesting batch of posts. Welcome Big Brother Mouton.

When I was helping to clear out my father’s possessions after he died in 1980, I came across a batch of photos from his days as a baseball player – he was drafted by the then-New York Giants a few years before they moved to San Francisco but that was trumped by Uncle Sam who drafted him to serve in Korea. Although he stayed in baseball as a team owner right up to his death, he lost his Field Of Dreams in the cold winter plains of Korea.

There were almost no styling changes between baseball uniforms worn back then – except for batting helmets – and what the Giants were wearing in 1980 – and probably not much different today.

I also came across a batch of photos of my dad’s older and younger brothers who were football players . Big difference in everything between then and 1980 except maybe the numbers on the uniforms. However, what was really different about then and modern day football according to the old programs I also ran across is that virtually every single player – except the quarterback – was expected to be a 60-Minute Man.

When did football become a game of specialists? Putting aside the extremely important issue of being subjected to many more injuries, what makes focusing on either offense or defense more attractive than being able to do both well?

A quick update on DrDoc: He’s been transferred to a General Medical/Surgical floor and is doing well physically. I’m not sure about his psychological health, however, because he cannot understand how something like this went undiagnosed for so long – the heart attack was a long time in the making.

It’s particularly frustrating because he’d been undergoing treatment for over two years for the pain in his right shoulder including an MRI and a CAT Scan over the previous three weeks along with two outpatient surgeries to relieve the pain since Labor Day. Because they hadn’t worked, he was scheduled for in-hospital neurosurgery week after next.

Had the pain been in his left shoulder, then the cardiology folks would have been brought in immediately. Evidently, unidentified right shoulder pain does not raise the same warning flags.

We did get good news earlier today about Saturn The Dog – although he has a serious infection which, if not treated, could turn life-threatening, he does not have lymphoma.

However, I have to give him oral medication twice a day and he’s a big dog – and I cannot imagine how I am going to get an 85-lb. dog whose head comes almost to my waist to take his meds. He’s a friendly dog and would never deliberately hurt me, but his mouth and teeth are pretty awesome and I have no way of knowing if he’ll panic.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get him to take his meds without biting off my fingers?

    Mahalo for any suggestions.

  331. Jason October 30, 2008 9:53 pm

Esme’s too busy uploading pictures of herself and her Gridiron friends on Facebook to talk to us …

  332. Jason October 30, 2008 10:00 pm

WassupDoc: Glad to see Dr. Doc is getting better. I made sure to mention you both in our prayer service last night; everyone in my church knows to pray for you both.

  333. jm2375 October 30, 2008 10:00 pm

WassupDoc – does Saturn like peanut butter? I’m serious. That’s how we gave our 75lb golden retriever his meds. We’d put some in a spoon and have him lick it while we shoved the pills in the back of his mouth. Worked like a charm. If you need a demo, I’d be happy to show you, using Homey as the dog. 😀 j/k. Seriously, call me if you need help.

Great news about DrDoc. I have my opinions about how his arterial blockages weren’t caught, but won’t go into it, lest I start a fire.

    anybody around?

  335. mLKauai October 30, 2008 10:30 pm

Hey folks, I live on Kauai, and miss the media talk about UH over here other than newspaper and tv. I dont listen to radio much (not too much traffic over here eh?), but please tell me what I may be missing re Tyler Graunke being missing in action? I was counting on Tyler carrying a QB load for the team. My feeling was affirmed when he played killer relief (like the old Rolo days) against Weber State. Now he is not on the traveling squad? WASSUP?
    What am I missing????????

  336. myki October 30, 2008 10:36 pm

    WD,

Glad to hear DD is doing better. Try liverwurst! We pinch some off and place the pill in it. Our dog loves it, and waits for more after he’s gulped the pill down.

    Take care of yourself too.

    Good night all.

  337. jm2375 October 30, 2008 10:50 pm

mLKauai – welcome to the blog!

    Hi myki!

  338. Jason October 30, 2008 10:51 pm

mLKauai: Well, he’s missed so many practices, with his academic issues and his health. As much as we’d like to think he can just step in and play immediately (because he’s a veteran), it appears that he can’t. I think it’s partially his injury — he needs to get his whole arm back into shape, since he’s been resting it for so long — and that he needs more reps in practice. But then, you want Alexander to get as many reps as possible if he’s going to be the starter, and you need to get Inoke reps too since he has his package.

If Tyler shows he’s completely healthy, then I think he might have a shot to get more reps. But if Alexander and Funaki continue to run the offense with efficiency, then Tyler will have to be the odd man out.

  339. Esme October 30, 2008 10:52 pm

Awwww, JaSON, that hurt your Nanay.

And juuuuust for your information … I actually have been working on a bunch of Tsaiko photos that I’m rounding up for my next upload-a-thon. So … THERE.

(I actually need to talk to you to ask about the protocol on IDs, etc. I’ll PM you … via Facebook. Mwaaaaahahahahaha!)

    😀

  340. Jason October 30, 2008 11:01 pm

Aww, I’m sorry for hurting you, Nanay.

    *hugs*

Ow! Why are you still wearing your traffic cones?!

Hi Jason! Hi Esme! You here for a while?

  342. SteveM October 30, 2008 11:06 pm

mLKauai — welcome to the blog!

Another nearby source of info is LizKauai, who is our Tsai-ko Chapter president on the island of Kauai. Look for Kauai Kau (Cattle calls and TV-viewing) when she announces them. There will be a Kauai Tsai-ko gathering for the Utah game. Liz should be on a little later tonight, so please contact her too.

  344. Jason October 30, 2008 11:10 pm

Sorry folks, Nanay Esme had to leave again. She hurt me with that hug, so she went out to buy me some triple chocolate cake to soothe my owies. Nanay Esme is a good nanay. Papa Al doesn’t buy me chocolate cake; he tells me to be a man and eat meat instead.

  345. jm2375 October 30, 2008 11:14 pm

OK, I’m done for tonite. See you in the am. Oyasumina-tsai.

  346. Esme October 30, 2008 11:17 pm

JaSON, I actually make an excellent and very popular choco-peanut butter crispie cake that I always bring to potlucks. Will that make up for the owies? 😉

jm, goonite! Sorry I missed your earlier note. Am just dropping in and out as hubby will be home from a weeklong trip in a few hours. I have to clean the house really quick … it’s so easy to slack on household stuff when the spouse is gone! Haha!

  347. tommui October 30, 2008 11:22 pm

WassDoc – glad to hear Doc is up and about after a fashion.

Doctors have become so specialized nowdays that they focus on one problem and only one within their field which can lead to problems.

  348. Jason October 30, 2008 11:34 pm

Mmm … Chocolate and peanut butter. Yummy.

Okay, I’m off to sleep. Good night, all.

  349. SteveM October 30, 2008 11:35 pm

Back from my TV inspection mission this afternoon. Fell asleep after a Tsai-ko size lunch for $9. Good thing I don’t eat seafood, otherwise it would cost me $11.

It was very disappointing. Not even one token 52″ Bravia in the batch. The mere 50″ Panasonics are not as good as watching a 32″ Bravia from 3 feet away. The new 42″ Panasonics in the private rooms could have fit a 46″.

I’ve posted pictures but don’t want to publicize the shortcomings here.

But I swallowed my disappointment, and to be polite, talked to Art and got first dibs on the large private karaoke room next season… 🙄

    http://chriscooley47.blogspot.com/2008/10/cb-5-thats-gay-pick-revisited.html

COLT blogs again on Chris Cooley’s site- talks about his fantasy team- among other things.

“Look folks I’ve been playing tackle football since 4th grade, never missed a year. I love this game, I really do, but a great lesson needs to be learned from our fantasy football video. When it comes to the media, don’t always believe what you see. I’m not even sure if I’m even doing well in Chris’s league, but I do know this, Lendale White is carrying me regardless. So I’ll end this post with the infamous words of Good Will Hunting… Chris, do you like apples? Lendale White is better than all three backs on your team… how do you like them apples?????”

  359. Ralph October 31, 2008 1:40 am

Al for ryan 0,0,0 I’ll take brother Keith’s feeling under consideration, he will play only defense- isn’t USU a passing team…

  360. Ralph October 31, 2008 1:41 am

Al you keeping track of mouton’s contest or did the twins add to their list of contests….

    howzit Tsaikos everywhere.

Wdoc, say hi to Dr D for me.

hiya LizK, sjmacro, d1, DPK. bulla, yu sure must be one proud pops with all da WB good news.

    Tony Tuioti, good job!!!

    Mike Wadsworth, welcome welcome!!!!!!

    Mr. Mouton,
howzit howzit. your bradda stepped up big time for uh Warriors. the press he getting for doing that, plus the respect he getting from his teammates and the coaches. obviously they see he can make the difference on the offense for now.

personally, if i was called the best this or that in 10 years, and if my team was losing because we never have the kind talent and finish that your brother has, I could understand the coaches asking him to fill in till they got the gears all lined up. its taken Alexander a while to get better, and I’m watching LWJ and wishing him well but the numbers are what they are. and it became so obvious that my playing offense made a noticeable contribution to the team’s success, well…. my opinion is:

welcome to Warrior Nation, Mr. Mouton. And THANK YOU Ryan. Just go out there and kick but…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  362. HiFlyer October 31, 2008 2:23 am

    Midori7

    C#1 – 138 yds passing.
TB – longest pass 32 yds.

    C#2 – 154 yds rushing.
TB – longest run 35 yds.

  363. K. Mouton October 31, 2008 3:46 am

Ralph- you might want to reconsider your numbers. Ryan will play offense this week.

Unfortunately, my baby brother wants me to let you all argue among yourselves. He called right before they left Oakland to fly to Utah and told me I know how he feels so leave it at that so I must respect his wishes but like I told him a lot of you misunderstood what I was saying so let me say it one more time:

There is no problem with him playing O. The problem is he is playing more O than D. He would prefer to do both but be a DB first. Thanks for the support everyone gives Ryan and the whole Warrior team but from now on I will only be reading.

    Go Warriors!

  364. mLKauai October 31, 2008 6:30 pm

mahalo Warrior bloggers, for the warm welcome. I look forward to sharing many successful game comments this season.
Re; my question about Tyler G.

Ok, I guess that sounds reasonable; and I guess you folks had plenty to say about it earlier in the season (or even off season).
It is a shame though, and being a fan since JJ came along (about 10 years), I can say that TG deserves a lot of praise and credit for being there for the team when he was needed, and coming through with t 110% effort, and wins.
That said, his superlative game (1/2 game) this year, proves what I am saying, and I certainly hope he can get healthy and another shot. At the very least as fans, I think we owe him a lot of credit.
In the end, as may be said, it comes down to what was in his power, and where he may have failed, off the field, yet, in my eyes he is and will always be, a winner.
