Helping hands

A little more than 15 years ago, in one of the most bizarre events in UH sports history, Bob Wagner was invited to a news conference to announce his dismissal as head football coach. During the conference, Riley Wallace, who was the UH basketball coach at the time, angrily protested the event, prompting then-associate athletic director Jim Donovan to mutter about a “two-for-one deal.”

Since then, metaphorical fences have been duct-taped. Wallace is now chair of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. At his urging, according to reports, the basketball Rainbow Warriors will be assured a berth — most likely a host’s role — in that postseason tournament if they do not qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Wagner is athletic director at Kamehameha-Hawaii, and plans are being finalized to use his school’s Big Island campus for a Warrior football scrimmage April 9.

Yes, we can all get along.

  31. Bowwar March 8, 2011 10:44 am

I appreciate Riley stepping up for what he believed at the time, which was mixed messages to coaches by the athletic administration. Graduation rate was the emphasis and little was done to assist the FB program in advancing either through aid or assistance. Like the firing of Red Rocha, the firing of Wagner was another sad and dispicable moment in UH athletics. I’m not faulting the reasons for the firing (i.e. losing seasons, etc.), but it surely could have been done alot better and definitely with a lot more “class”.

To me, the jury is still “out” on Jim Donovan, as many of us have not forgotten that event and his callous remarks to Riley. Time will tell if Donovan will eventually fall on his sword…

By the way, I don’t recall Donovan ever apologizing to the public for his inappropriate remarks…

  32. Bowwar March 8, 2011 10:46 am

I also applaud Riley and Wags for their integrity and continued goodwill towards UH despite the lousy way they were treated…

I also want to note that Larry Price was also treated poorly when he left the UH athletic program…Yet, I know the “coach” still tries to support the school…

You are a professional person .

Therefore, we have a patent pending method that will help you be more professional and have happier patients.

First, this is NOT a MLM !!

Ready-For-You allows you to notify your patients by text message that you are ready for them.

This way they do not have to sit in your waiting room. It is similar to the vibrating devices used in restaurants but the range is the range of the patient’s smart phone… In other words almost everywhere!

Perhaps you would like to inexpensively develop your own data base.

Ready-For-You automatically builds a data base for the practice that can be used over and over to inform patients of appointments or even significant health threats.

The return on investment (ROI) can be spectacular .

Just go to http://www.ready-for-you.com and find out how you can begin to use our patent pending method! We have a COMPLETE support staff to help you. You can find support at http://www.ready-for-you.biz/contact-us

We look forward to hearing from you.

bowwar — I vaguely recall the event and remember thinking that JD sure looked like a bad guy or stooge for the administration… that was the way it seemed anyway, by the way it was reported. I wonder if some reporter or blog host who was there and a friend to both men would elaborate on the full context of that remark…. 😕

Since then, many Tsai-kos have met and talked with Jim Donovan. I am certain that “no class” in dealing with his people and coaches will NOT be his legacy as A.D.

    NOTHING.

Doesn’t teams like OSU schedule body bag opponents for the first two games anyway??? The GA’s could “coach” these games on the sidelines.

$250,000.00 is a lot of money, but Tressel ain’t gonna starve.

For the WAC and OUR RPI, the four losses by us and Fresno State were suffered at the hands of ranked opponents or at least teams receiving votes.

The ideal situation is that we and Fresno State do not lose any games from now until we meet April 1st-2nd.

More probable for us than Fresno State, but still a TALL task for any team to pull this off.

  63. Bowwar March 8, 2011 3:52 pm

    #38: Steve M…

Yes, the event was on video…I wonder if anyone has that video archived. Whether he was merely acting on Hugh Yoshida’s behalf or not, what Jim Donovan said to Wallace was in very poor taste. In this new age of “transparency”, that type of handling of personnel situations will NOT cut-it in today’s world. As I’ve said, the jury is still out on JD and how he handles various things such as contract renewals and terminations.

  64. Bowwar March 8, 2011 3:53 pm

Harlan Cleveland’s lasting legacy was the poor handling of Red Rocha’s termination…

  65. Bowwar March 8, 2011 3:58 pm

By the way, its ironic that MACK paid for his inappropriate remarks and apologized…I never heard JD ever apologize for his snafu back then. I think that would do alot towards pono…

  66. Kazz March 8, 2011 4:18 pm

If Jim Donovan apologized to Wallace in private and face-to-face, I imagine that would be between the two.

If this already happened then it was “pono” to those involved and not for anyone else’s own gratification.

Just because it wasn’t made public, doesn’t mean it never happened.

  67. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 8, 2011 4:30 pm

Anyone here attending this event? If so, shall we plan to sit together?

‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue will host the AKA Scholarship Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 6, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Tickets are $50 each or sponsor tables (seats 10) are available for $1,000. UH coaches and student-athletes will be in attendance and there will be heavy pupus and assorted beverages. Proceeds from the event will help fund UH student-athlete scholarships. For more information, call the AKA office at 956-6500.

    </blockquote)

Our tickets for Saturday’s baseball game have been taken and Friday night’s volleyball tickets as well. We’ll be at The Les on Friday night and The Stan on Friday while our other tickets are vice-versed.

However, according to the Star-Advertoser’s Breaking News, the Pali Highway is going to be closed from Friday at 8 pm to Monday at 4 am in both directions. I checked with TheBus Customer Service and they say that the buses will be re-routed across Likelike if it is too dangerous for them to travel along the upper Pali. Othewise, they’ll travel in the opposite lane which is why the entire highway is closed.

If a lot of Windward folks are planning to attend any of the sporting events this weekend, be prepared for extra traffic across Likelike or H-3

Longwood University defeated Virginia twice today. Longwood faces Na Wahine on March 11 in the Pepsi Malihini tourney.

Virginia defeated UH 6-4 in the Cathedral City Classic.

  71. Ralph March 8, 2011 5:43 pm

Longwood is 12-3 for the year with their ace Brianna Wells is 10-3. Teams are batting .173 against her.

  72. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 5:46 pm

    Ralph,

Curious why Longwood is not ranked, or even mentioned as one of the teams receiving votes category. Seems they have been a few Top 20 teams this year, or am I wrong?

  73. Ralph March 8, 2011 5:49 pm

the Red Hawks of Miami of Ohio is 8-6 with a team BA of .276. No information on Tokyo.

The weather should be better so come on out to the RWSS this Thursday at 6 pm when the Na Wahinne face off with Tokyo in an exhibition before the start of the Pepsi Malihini Tourney on Friday.

  74. Ralph March 8, 2011 5:50 pm

Longwood doesn’t have a lot of quality wins except for Norte Dame and Virginia.

  75. Ralph March 8, 2011 5:55 pm

Longwood softball field was built in 2008 with locker rooms and lounge, restrooms and sits 300.

A small school can have a lounge and locker room for its team but UH can’t, auwe!

  76. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 5:59 pm

Any way to build locker rooms adjacent to the batting cage building, seems like there is room there.

  79. Ralph March 8, 2011 6:06 pm

Kazz small school vs big school, relatively speaking UH is much bigger than Longwood. A non resident pays close to $29K in tuition to attend Longwood.

Should we raise the athletic fees to compensate for the low tuition that UH charges? LOL 🙂

Review About Steve Iser And His New Commission Crusher Program

Lately there has been a lot of talk about this new program that has been coming in my email inbox and being wildly talked about online right now.

But you see, I got a sneak peak into what Commission Crusher is all about and wanted to give you my review on it.

So what is Commission Crusher exactly?

Commission Crusher is based on a simple marketing concept that anybody can duplicate online and never have to compete against one another.

I think its a wonderful idea. I use mine all the time. It can have its disadvantages, like taking facebook to a whole new level. However, you can also check important emails or google answers to questions right from your phone. I think its definately a good choice.

The clubhouse and a functioning locker room with running water for showers and toilets are two different things.

I’ve heard people say: “Well, how about just a place to change and no need for showers.”

Well, last time I checked most players will want to shower after a game, especially when they are covered in dirt or “mud” and they eventually have to walk back to the complex to shower anyway.

If they are going to build something, it has to be a full blown locker room with showers and their own bathroom.

No sense in building a space for them to change, but having showers and their own bathroom still located 80-90 yards away.

If anything, just a bathroom for player and coach use only would be a MAJOR improvement and probably cheaper… PROBABLY.

  84. Kazz March 8, 2011 6:27 pm

    Ralph,

    Read my quick post again.

Size of the institution has nothing to do with it.

The institution is only as efficient as the system that is running it.

You give $50,000.00 to a efficient, but small entity and you give the same amount to a large JUMBLED entity and I doubt the results of what they do will be the same.

  85. Ereksiyon hapi March 8, 2011 6:32 pm

  86. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 6:42 pm

    Kazz,

From what I have seen, the clubhouse has electricity and running water, or am I wrong. Who installed the electricity and running water?

  87. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 6:47 pm

    Kazz,

If I am not mistaken, all material and labor did not cost the UH anything, since everything was donated. With the interest in Wahine Softball, right now, why not see if a lockerroom can be build the same way, via donated material and labor.

  88. Egan March 8, 2011 6:52 pm

    @Kev 1

I was referring to the attendance figures.

  89. jm2375 March 8, 2011 6:58 pm

That MWC survey is dumb. Why should I answer questions about sports other than football?

  90. Da Punchbowl Kid March 8, 2011 7:03 pm

    al-

    A correction of a correction.

Fat Tuesday falls on March 8th this year, the same day as Malasada Tuesday. How appropriate that the two days should coincide this year. 😆

  91. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 7:06 pm

Just wondering, if the Booster Club Officers were to ask the Wahine Softball Team what they would rather have, a Championship Ring or a Lockerroom, I wonder what their answer would be.

  92. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 7:12 pm

If the Termite Company that did the NBC Concert Hall, for free, there should be a company out there that would build the Wahine Softball Team’s lockerroom for free, also.

  93. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 7:15 pm

The Booster Club needs to take advantage of the interest in the Wahine Softball Team, and see what they can do for the Team, besides just getting them Championship rings.

  94. al March 8, 2011 7:20 pm

wsf…why don’t you join the booster club?

    you are full of ideas.

  95. al March 8, 2011 7:22 pm

dpk…okay i’ll accept that. hmmm. you just reminded me to make a two minute run to leonard’s.

do i get the plain ones or the cinnamon sugar?

they also have cream filled ones?

    one or two?

    dozen that is.

  96. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 7:23 pm

    al:,

#94, Need to check with Pomai, or Kazz, before you make a statement like that.

  97. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 7:25 pm

    al:,

Are you member of the Booster Club, if so, how much did you contribute to the booster club?

  98. al March 8, 2011 7:26 pm

a locker room at the softball stadium site for both home and visitors with complete plumbing to accommodate up to 35 each. with all the modern day ammenities would probably run about 500k to 750k to design and construct.

then, where would the monies to maintain the facility come from?

and since you are at it, shouldn’t a public restroom be included.

oh, so now we are gazing at a 1.2 m dollar project and you still need maintenance/custodial services.

  99. al March 8, 2011 7:27 pm

no, i am not a booster of the softball team but i am a booster of the athletic programs in general.

    what statement concerns you?

  101. Annoddah Dave March 8, 2011 7:34 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Today’s post about the Bob Wagner firing got me going again. This is one of the poorest leadership actions I have ever seen. The other one was the hiring of Fred VA. Riley was standing up for his convictions. Was he right? He jeopardized his relationship with his boss. As it turned out, his boss finally left, and Riley remained and was able to leave on his own terms. However, he also made a poor decision by naming his successor. As it turned out, the Fumbler made it worse. Leadership is an art, we have not had very many “artists”. JD may cut it but like most things, artists are not appreciated until they are gone.

  102. ya_think March 8, 2011 7:39 pm

I would suggest that all the talk about a locker room should be left up to the coach and AD.

  103. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 7:43 pm

    al:,

Just talking lockerroom for the Wahine’s only. There are already public restroom there. Seems like you have never been to RWSS, otherwise you would have known that there were public restrooms. The same people that maintain the lockerroom at Les Murakami Stadium. My guess it is the players, or grounds crew.

  104. protector March 8, 2011 8:13 pm

    re: Bob Wagner

He was a heck of a coach and a classy guy and he was let go by UH in a way that illustrates UH at its worst. They (UH) totally lacked class in the clue-less way they dealt with the situation and JD showed that for a guy with a “nice guy” persona, he could show that he can really be a jerk on occasion too. Incidentally, Wagner did what Tomey could not…Beat BYU. It was he that brought Paul Johnson in to usher in a new paradigm where the Offense could be high-scoring and exciting and every bit as aggressive as the D was, as opposed to Tomey’s model.

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid March 8, 2011 8:18 pm

    al –

I’ll be home if you want to stop by and make amends with some fresh, hot, malasadas. They are normally kapu with my diet, but I’d happily accept a dozen if it makes you feel better. 😉

  106. al March 8, 2011 8:38 pm

wsf…you guessed it right. i have never been to watch a softball game live. i have walked past many times on my way to the murakami and to observe football practices.

i guess that is doable then, a locker room. i would think visitor accomodations would be nice too.

  107. al March 8, 2011 8:39 pm

don’t you think the roster for football should be like this.

    tim b*****

    aka da punchbowl kid

    kamehameha schools-kapalama

    blocking back

    forty: 9.7

    vj: 06 ”

    bench: 2 1/2 times

favorite food: malasadas, lots of it

    bio: blah, blah, blah………….

  116. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 9:31 pm

Looking at the roster, this is going to be a very young team, lot of freshmen, and sophomores.

  117. longboarder March 8, 2011 10:02 pm

    Steve, your BS is nauseating.

Are you going to any of the baseball games this weekend? I would still bitch slap you like how I said I would a few months ago.

  118. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 10:03 pm

The 2007 Wahine Softball Team, that fell one game short of going to the Softball College World Series, got a clubhouse build for their accomplishment. I think the 2010 Wahine Softball Team, that went to the Softball College World Series, should at least get a lockerroom for what they accomplished. The Booster Club should be working toward that end.

  119. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 10:05 pm

    Longboarder,

Now you are truly showing your true colors. That you really do not care about the athletes at all, and what they accomplish.

  120. WahineSoftballFan March 8, 2011 10:06 pm

    Longboarder,

I imagine you do not even belong to any UH Athletic Booster Club.

  121. hhhmmmm.... March 8, 2011 10:10 pm

  122. Curt March 8, 2011 10:22 pm

    wsf,

al made a good suggestion for you to join the softball booster club. No need to get defensive and get on his case. You made a number of suggestions for the booster club. As the saying goes, “Talk is cheap.” So in my opinion, it’s a great suggestion he made where you can help tranlate talk into action. But then again, I’m probably guilty of making all kinds of suggestions and not be willing to back it up. Kudos to Kazz, Pomai, and all who volunteer and labor for our Warriors and Wahine behind the scenes.

Time for a positive spin on the S.

No thanks to HF, all the meat is in the last month or so.

Except for a tough game with SJ St on 10/12, the early part of the S looks like a perfect start.

Pollsters will pay the most attention during that last month, so quality wins at the end will definitely be a plus for UH.

Not to overlook any opponents, but a perfect season is a reality and 20 years from now, who cares who we played, just that we were there when it all fell into place.

    1. The sport of choice for unemployed or incarcerated people is: Basketball.

    2. The sport of choice for maintenance level employees is: Bowling.

    3. The sport of choice for front line workers is: Football.

    4. The sport of choice for supervisors is: Baseball.

    5. The sport of choice for middle management is: Tennis.

The things i have seen in terms of personal computer memory is always that there are specifications such as SDRAM, DDR and so forth, that must match the specific features of the mother board. If the pc’s motherboard is very current and there are no operating system issues, updating the ram literally normally requires under one hour. It’s among the easiest computer upgrade methods one can consider. Thanks for expressing your ideas.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Along with everything which appears to be developing throughout this subject matter, many of your points of view tend to be quite refreshing. However, I appologize, because I can not subscribe to your entire plan, all be it refreshing none the less. One more thing I would like to convey is that in place of trying to fit all your online degree training on days that you conclude work (considering that people are fatigued when they come home), try to arrange most of your lessons on the week-ends and only one or two courses for weekdays, even if it means a little time away from your weekend. This is beneficial because on the weekends, you will be more rested along with concentrated upon school work. Thanks a bunch for the different recommendations I have realized from your web site.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
