Hello Mello?
Kamehameha alumni of a certain age will remember two of the school’s best football players and wrestlers — Spencer Mello and Richard “Moose” Mello. Both brothers were All-State football players; both were champion wrestlers.
Spencer Mello’s son, Seth Mello, has made a name for himself at New Mexico’s Valley High as an All-State center in football and champion wrestler. Seth Mello, who is 6-1 and 240 pounds, also can play defensive end.
Seth Mello has applied for admission to UH with the hope of joining the Rainbow Warriors as a walk-on.

His Pop’s, Rich, was actually a two time all-state player, and for those of you of that period, was part of the very catchy M&M duo for Kamehameha, where his running-mate, also an all-state linebacker was Jordan Morey. Rich went on to play for the New Mexico Lobos, and if I recall correctly once had a monster game against us….
A certain sportscaster — hint: “I hope you’re all having a … (pause) … pleasant evening” — referred to Richard Mello as the “Kurt Gouveia of Kamehameha.”

Did you guys see Alabama is leading a rules movement to slow down hurry-up, no-huddle offenses?
Wonder what his quickness and speed in 40?
He appears to have brute strength by standing up much taller and heavier DTs – if accepted, maybe a MLBer?
I think no-huddle is kind of ruining the game and also dangerous for defensive guys not being able to switch out when needed. There should be at least a time limit to set up an offensive play if they want to go no-huddle.

personally, teams should be allowed to snap the ball any time they want and if it’s before the defense can set – then, too bad!!!

I think if a team is going no-huddle, and a defensive player is trying to run off the field, the defense shouldn’t be penalized for having too many players. Well, as long as the guy running off the field doesn’t turn around and try to make a tackle.

I guess this would take away the lower tier teams from trying to equalize the output of the power/size/strength of the “haves”.

20…Having done a couple of stints in the land of enchantment, HS ball there is not quite on the level of Hawai’i. And it certainly does not have the consistency of size say of our top 10-12 squads. So, its a tad harder to make accurate evaluations, that said, he does possess two things his played with: raw strength and adept appreciation of leverage and technique. He actually has better size than his pops…

which is worse, cane smoke or vog?? one has carbon from plants, the other has sulfur from earth. one last 30 minutes, the other last for days. one is a distraction, the other compounds respiratory problems. both drive “pseudo kamaaina” crazy and some of them leave which makes it great for us who grew up here.

34–Hmmmn-In basic chemistry: plants discharge mainly carbon, if you burn it you get lots of CO2. Natural gas is mostly methane, and that’s a different story. With methane just ’20 percent of the burned atoms’ are carbon, the rest is hydrogen, which transforms to pure, drinkable water if you force it to bind with oxygen.
Although the energetic value of hydrogen is not as high as that of carbon, this by catch still helps to make the burning of natural gas considerably cleaner and less carbon-intensive, with fewer grams of CO2 per Joule of energy – hence gas is ‘better’ for the climate than Plants (carbons)-or so it seems.
To be a more specific: climate is very much about leaking methane and emitting sulfur too. Methane to air emissions are an accidental byproduct of natural gas production.
However damaging that byproduct may be for human health and the wider environment, sulfate and sulfur dioxide aerosols do help to raise the atmosphere’s albedo, thereby reflecting more sunlight and offsetting part of the warming that coal’s CO2 causes.
All right, so if we accept sulfur is good and sulfur/methane is bad for the climate–depends??
Because on a single day you may be able to compare the climatic effects of sulfur, methane and CO2 – it becomes a lot more complicated if you look at longer timescales. Sulfur aerosols are only airborne for days, perhaps weeks. Methane’s atmospheric half-life is supposed around 8.4 years. However the CO2 we emit today is there for – practically speaking – ever.

I went to school a couple blocks from the cane fields (robinson heights) never had any trouble from the smoke even though the flames was visible. Id take black snow over vog.

know what you allude to as we caught all the smoke and ash – had to close all windows and take laundry in or they would turn black – not a good feeling as they would burn for hours and daily until the harvest was complete

col, but don’t you miss the breaking burnt cane and using your teeth to chew the bugga. then you go home with burnt cane stains on your t shirt and shorts and get hellings from your mom. watching the small trains in the fields at harvest time being loaded on to larger trains. taking cane from the small cane cars and having the luna chase you. i neva worry about laundry or closing windows cause that is what our life was growing up on a sugar plantation. we have way less workers today in the sugar can industry, but they are loyal and support the company.

“totan” boats. My father told me he made one and used to catch akule near Pier 2 when he was a kid (my grandmother ran a lunch wagon–akule plate). Leaked a lot, and one morning he sank before he made it back to the pier. 🙂
Many stories of fishing and crabbing in Pearl Harbor in the old days in totan boats… they were low profile/low silhouette and difficult to spot by security.

I will be the spokesperson for the plantation community on Oahu as we did all those things in the Waialua/Haleiwa area. Used those totan outrigger canoes in the Anahulu stream which is the one that goes under the Rainbow Bridge. I have no idea how these things become so common place but the link must be the plantation communities. I used to spend my high school summers working in the pine fields for Dole and the cane fields for Waialua Sugar. I believe the tar was used for connecting those cement flumes and the totan was common place for roofs in those days. So as poor kids, you would just use what was available.
Whew, we have a lot of old timers on this blog. No wonder, it’s not crazy like some other blogs.

#69 & 72 We got our tar from the telephone poles. Used to scrape it off. Sometime used to chew ’em. Then I remember we used to get some of the old combs from the older guys (used too much cosmetic stick, the comb would bend too much for them or the teeth would broke, so they gave ’em to us), we melt ’em down and use for patch the nail holes in the totan.
You right about paddle like heck. Our’s sank in the middle of the river.
Yeah, I one old bugga. I remember when the street lights went off at 10:00 pm. The garbage men were real strong as they had to throw the 55 gallon drum of trash up to the dump truck for the other guys to catch and unload. But back in the day we used to burn our trash in those cans before pick up day.
I remember when “pumping gas” was really pumping. My grandfather had one gas station and we had to pump the amount the customer asked for. One would watch the gas rise in the glass tank above the pump & hose housing.
Good fun though.
Since it’s a slow sports day, I will digress further on those old days where you could do things that didn’t cost money. Of course, on the North Shore we had the ocean and beaches to spend time surfing, diving, fishing, etc. We also could get the akuheads free in those days to catch those huge Samoan crabs. We could go camping with no tents and use kiawe wood that was just laying around for the campfire. Lot of fresh water springs so we could go in the taro patches for crayfish or just float around in those totan type boats they used to harvest the taro. We used to explore for miles using the cane haul roads. You could find wild honey or jump in the spring water well and get run off by the Meadow Gold employee who came around with his dog and shotgun. Some of the brave ones could jump off the Rainbow bride or off the top of Waimea Valley falls which was not developed yet. We could also climb down to Waimea Bay (no parking lot yet; my uncle built that) and jump off the rock. We used to play some football with the Kahuku boys at the bay. Remember Junior Ah You, he was some athlete.

kids now just stay home n play games…wonder what it will be like 50 years from now.. n what will they be able to talk about when they were younger ???…maybe me come back as totan..but no one will kid know what to use me for.. just a plain roof maybe…that would be a very dull life for a piece of totan huh…he he he…just think..if it could talk.. no streams it traveled.. no irrigation ditches..the bays.. the bottom of the ocean…n the miles n miles it traveled.. giving enjoyment to kids.. of all ages n culture…kids that grew up to be the salt of the earth.. n blogger regulars…he he he….wow who would have thought ..kids from the 30’s n 40’s would all one day have a venue like that is provided for us here..to share our experiences.. laughs n tears..n there are a few of them also of course….

The UH Softball wahines won today 10 to 5. Heather Morales gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the fist inning which included a grand slam. What is impressive Morales scattered 3 hits over the last 6 innings to win her 4th game.

After listening to the Sports Animals, I don’t think Gary realizes that if they give more stipends to the football/men’s basketball teams, they’re going to have to give the same to the women’s teams due to title IX. I don’t think there are many schools that will be to afford to do so.
Nothing like remembering the good ole days when Hawaii was still a territory. I used to drink the ice cold spring water in Moanalua Gardems. Kalihi Theater used to have 10 cents matinees on Saturdays. Sugar cane extended up the mountain in Aiea above Waimalu and Newtown and Sumida watercress farm. Where Pearlridge shopping center is today it was all pasture land and there was a dirt field next to Sumida Farm on the right side that we used to play tackle football when it was muddy and rinsed off in the ice cold spring water stream that ran thru Sumida Farm.
We used to catch the old Leeward Bus to Liliha and walk to downtown and would stop at the Aala Pawnshop at beginning of what is now Aala park. We would of course walk around Hotel St and look at some of the ahhh posters that adorned some of the clubs and Beretania Follies.
Eh truman I bet you from the northshore lol. Did you know that the railroad used to haul the sugar cane around Kaena Point into town.
Palace Theatre had kids perform – sing, dance, whatever, after the matinee.
I remember winning some stuff. They also had plates. cups etc as prizes.

My hair is salt and pepper and my face shows the years of happiness and sorrow, my skin has lost its elasticity and somewhat stays where you put it.
My belly hangs over my belt and looks like a wet potato sack, my toe nails are turning yellow and you need a set of limb cutters to keep them trim.
My knees are becoming knobby and those strong legs I once had have lost their vim and vigor. My hands are covered with liver spots and don’t move with any dexterity, my biceps are now Byeceps.
I need glasses to read and fall asleep if I read to long, there’s
long hairs growing out of my ears and if the wind blows it tickles the inside of my ears.
I have to put on my glasses to clip the hairs in my nones, my teeth are showing signs of wear, even the false ones.
My walk is slower and I do sometimes wobble, I don’t run up the stairs anymore, as a matter of fact I can’t run down them ether. I often wonder how I ever made it up the hill in this condition to be what is known as “over the hill”.
Bed time is now any time between six and nine, I sleep like an old baby.
But on top of all this my Filipina, all of 25 years of age, tells me I’m still “gwapa” and keeps the spark of life burning inside. She cuts the hairs and trims the nails and cooks me meals with love, she sees more in me then I do and this makes me happy.
Can anyone give me a damm good reason to go back ????

#79-st. anthony trojan, 30’s and 40’s wow a little before my time. I use the blog name truman because that’s who was president when I was born. You one funny guy but yeah it was fun but all that activity kept me slim and you know what happens when all that stops and you get older. lol.
#86-old808, yeah I remember the trains as WACO had a train in front of their offices for a long time when they no longer used them and went to those huge cane haulers. I used to remember all those useless facts like them being 50 tons (probably with load) and that is the same weight as tanks in those days. My dad was a mechanic who fixed those tanks and also those sanpans that used to dot the docks at the Haleiwa harbor. I got to go out with him to test run them. We also got the benefit of receiving free lobster and kona crabs. Lobster in those days were huge!!!
If Saban/Alabama can convince the NCAA to abolish the hurry up to make his team even more dominant then the NCAA should limit 5 star and 4 star recruits to not more than 2 per team. Even the playing field yeah? Hurry up hurts the defensive players but what about a team stacked with the top recruits playing against teams that can’t recruit those type of players? That hurts too!

I think no-huddle brings a sandlot type of football game which can lead to more excitement offensively. I can see how defensive guys like Saban can get irritated by it.
just looking at saban’s mug shot is irritating.
yeah….like saban we should argue that the game hurts us and hawaiian style rules need to be ushered in.
in aloha stadium bring in asphault (sp) and telephone or light poles for the goal lines….3 complete is first down, no need yard markers…then we get chance.

Just watched the tape of Seth Mello. This young man with good weight put on that frame could be a player very easily…..very impressed even though his size contributed to not getting placed…..he is relentless….I wish him the best and hope he makes it here
Before I leave the “old fut discussion” one of the best things when we moved here was going to the Palace Theater and then crossing the street to the Dairyman (I think was this before Meadow Gold) Drive-in for their peach Melba.
Remember the building where City Mill Kaimuki is now located. When I moved here, we went shopping there. The market was called PX and had one chocolate chip cookie baking machine at the entrance. They had to change the name because the military said could not use the name. They went out and I think IGA came in before P&P. There was also a slot car operation in the building and then Chico’s. Below there was Rainbow’s Pool Hall but I cannot remember the name of the drive in that was up there.
You can tell how old people are by how they remember old buildings that have changed residents over time. So, that building is at least 50 years old.
I think Seth is a good size to be a fullback. Good blocking technique and pretty good feet.
seems we all like Mello and his versatility to compete for different positions such as rush end, blocking back, line backer, special teams, etc.
will UH accept his application so he can walk-on to the football team?

old-fut days – still remember all the tanks that rumbled their way on our roads and the crews of the B-25 planes around us, the search lites lighting up the sky for the ack-ack guns about 40 yards from our house, and a vague memory of our white German shepherd that was shot to death by a certain Army Air force Captain when it strayed unto their base
and this was NOT on Oahu!
