Future investment

Isaac Savaiinaea will be entering his junior year at Punahou, but he already has received two football offers. One is from a school in Indiana with an Irish-based theme. The other came today from UH.

Savaiinaea is a 6-foot-2, 230-pound outside linebacker. He hopes to remain at that position, although observers envision him developing into a speedy defensive end.

His father, Seli Savaiinaea, has been a Warrior fan since moving from Samoa in 1993.

“I always go the games,” Seli said.

Isaac participated in UH’s Skills Camp, which ended this morning.

“I like how they really depict everything, and teach good technique, which will help my game,” Isaac said.”I was very thankful they have good coaches who helped me make my game better.”

Here are Seli and Isaac:

Bon Voyage to Garret and family in the Med!

It’s early afternoon in Barcelona, Spain and Garret, Lori, daughters, Mr. & Mrs. Momo and other family members have probably just boarded the 3.5 football field-long Norwegian Epic.

…haven’t heard from Garret since 0322 Wednesday when he posted he was busy wrapping up work stuff and trying to pack. Maybe a good sign. When he works, it’s non-stop… so when he travels and vacations with family this year, here’s the venue:

Wow! Garrett and his family will have a fabulous time on their cruise! I saw Spain in the past, but I did all the important cities of Spain by land, using their train system. Have yet to enjoy a cruise of at least three or more days at sea.

I hear Houston is building up their port infrastructure too.

I decided to use Midnight as an alias because I was called that in my high school days. I used to go to the beach all the time. I was dark, so my team-mates gave me the nickname. Another one was Chocolate.

  14. Midnight June 19, 2011 1:42 am

Since I have moved to Arlington, TX, I have not explored much. I am thinking of going south to the coast to do some looking around. Barbara and I have settled in, but we are still doing odds and ends about the house and yard. We are looking forward to going to Vegas in September, and already, Barbara is thinking about our yard and her plants. How are we going to give them water – I mentioned to her that maybe we can rig up a drip system with a timer. That seems good.

  15. Midnight June 19, 2011 1:45 am

OK, den! Now I will get to work! Have a good day everyone!

    Go Warriors!

In decades past and those to come, student athletes strive for the “coveted” athletic scholarship – in many sports.

But, what is its true value and who determines such? Does it differ with each and every university/college? Can an institution decide to value it as “in-state” versus “out-of-state to “save” budget dollars?

Will now Gov Abercrombie really place the UH travel budget as a separate line item in his budget rather than out of the UHAD’s funds? Will the legislature “nit-pick” this or let it slide as it becomes an insignificant amount compared to the multi-billion-dollar annual budget? Will $5 million be enough to accommodate all athletic travel annually? While many “hone-in” on football, baseball, volleyball, softball and basketball, let’s not forget track ‘n field, golf, swimming/diving, water polo, soccer, and tennis.

Duffer I recently saw a video of a pre-season game from last year between Kailua and Baldwin. There was a kid from Baldwin (83) who was BOOMING kick offs in and out of the endzone and launching monster field goals! On the video you can hear the Kailua crowd gasp at this kids leg strength. Any idea who this kid is and his plans (if any) of playing college ball? There has got to be a way to get him to Manoa.

Kolten Wong was a huge part of the turnaround of the baseball program. Staying at home gave his a chance to improve his stock, while giving something back. He as rewarded by being a high pick, and should see a hefty signing bonus. And in those 3 years, he got some additional education in a good environment.

Hopefully we’ll see some other local prospects follow Kolten’s lead.

General Douglas Macarthur wrote this to his son in 1942…

Build me a son, O Lord,

who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,

    and brave enough to face him self when he is afraid;

one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,

and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be

    where his backbone should be;

a son who will know Thee- and that

to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort,

but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.

    Here, let him learn to stand up in the storm;

here, let him team compassion for those who fall.

    Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high;

    a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men;

    one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep;

one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his,

add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,

so that he may always be serious,

yet never take himself too seriously.

Give him humility, so that he may always remember

    the simplicity of true greatness,

the open mind of true wisdom,

    the meekness of true strength.

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper,

“I have not lived in vain.”

    re: Coach Mack’s Pay

How does everyone feel about this issue about Coach Mack possibly taking a pay cut rather and making up the difference in bonuses etc?

First of all I think that is what should have been done the first time around. Starting his salary around $500,000 w/ incentives to push it towards $1M. Take the other $500,000 and spread it to the OC/DC positions to get ourselves and more importantly keep talent.

I think we are in a good position to negotiate a contract that is in favor of UH (this time around (O_0)…). Give Mack a 5 year contract for $600,000 + incentives to push it to $1.3M. With a buyout option of $750,000 after the 3rd year of the contract if you fail to have a winning record after 2/3 years of the contract.

Take 1/2 of the saved money and invest it into OC/DC and other assistant positions.

I don’t think Mack is a hot commodity with tons of schools willing to pay him $1M+…Therefore his choices are to take what we offer, which is still a lot of money or leave (w/o the retirement+health benefits vested).

    Thoughts?

  86. ai-eee-soos June 19, 2011 4:35 pm

Isaac Savaiinaea – hope you stay home and be a WARRIOR !!!

    … good size, 6-foot-2, 230-pound outside linebacker.

  87. d1shima June 19, 2011 4:44 pm

First of all I think that is what should have been done the first time around. Starting his salary around $500,000 w/ incentives to push it towards $1M.

I’m not sure a structure like that would have stopped him from joining The Former Coach in Dallas which would have left the position vacant for an uncomfortably long time.

Mack wasn’t sniffing around looking to be the HC.

  88. Aaron June 19, 2011 4:46 pm

hateme: I do agree that UH has the leverage in this situation because I don’t think Mack will have many other offers (and I don’t think he really wants to leave). Honestly, I don’t think they thought Mack would still be wanted here after 5 years, but he’s been able to earn a mostly favorable reputation and it would be pie on UH’s face if we “lost” a coach who might be coming off a pretty successful run at the end of his 5 years. hopefully, he retires with the agreement that someone like Miano gets the job and keeps the coaching staff mostly intact.

  89. BG June 19, 2011 5:01 pm

    IWWTHM

It’s a slow, relaxed day, so I’m willing to jump in before I take the books out and do my reading.

First of all, there will be a fiscal problem if Mack makes the incentives and earns his $1.3 mil and the “savings” has already been given to the staff. The incentive $$ has to come from somewhere. If its budgeted (as it should be), there’s no savings.

The other thing is the concept of giving your head coach a “take it or leave it” proposition. What kind of message does that send to the HC AND the staff? I would think that the coaches such as Aranda and Rolo would think twice about aspiring to the HC position if they see that such an attitude exists. As far as Mack’s appeal to other schools…we can’t be sure can we? Take a step back and look at the progress made over the past few years. Mack is not flashy and made some real blunders, but he has consistently identified and fixed problems, and in the process has shown real leadership with a capital “L”. How many coaches would have had the gumption to promote Aranda and Rolo? That was huge! One year there were exasperating problems with substitutions and time-outs…partly due to micro-managing I think…Mack took big steps to fix that by delegating more responsibility to his OC and DC. I believe we’ll see an even more efficient field operation this year. Finally, Mack has the best recruiting program in place. Just look at the talent on the roster and how they are projecting for the future. He is light years ahead of what JJ did here recruiting wise. We all know the kind of money JJ is making at SMU. With the kind of staff and talent on board now, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mack’s resume fill out very positively in coming years.

If the University took the wrong approach, my biggest fear would be Mack leaving and taking Rolo and Aranda with him. After all, if the two coaching stars don’t see the support and positive attitude towards the HC, why would they think it would be different for them?

  90. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 5:09 pm

    #89,

Take Rolo and Aranda with him to _______________.

Please fill in the blank that would pay all three of them together Mack ($1M+), Rolo and Aranda ($250,000 and up)…

    SJSU? New Mexico? Ohio State?

I am willing to take that chance.

2ndly, You take HALF as I had already stated, of his guaranteed salary savings to go towards the OC’s long term contract/raises. The incentives are tied into things that actually bring in revenue. When we win, when we are nationally ranked, when we beat BCS teams, when we make bowl games, etc etc…There is a correlation with success on the field and revenue at the box office and PPV money etc.

  91. d1shima June 19, 2011 5:12 pm

    Ault gets 2 year extension

The 64-year-old Ault, entering his 27th season as Nevada’s coach, had earned a base annual salary of $443,092, plus performance bonuses.

While his contract calls for a $25,000 annual salary increase, Ault decided to forfeit the increase in the coming year and voluntarily accept a 4.8 percent salary reduction along with other university faculty and staff on the state-funded portion of his salary. That means his salary starting July 1 will be $435,119 instead of $476,065.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6679143

  92. d1shima June 19, 2011 5:14 pm

Under the contract, Ault will receive $15,000 for a conference title; $10,000 for a bowl game appearance in which Nevada doesn’t win a conference title; $10,000 for a Top 25 USA Today postseason ranking; and $5,000 if he’s selected conference coach of the year, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

Ault was the lowest-paid head coach among teams that finished in the final AP Top 25 last season, and was the only Top 25 coach to make less than $1 million.

  93. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 5:14 pm

    #87,

At the time, if he didn’t want to take it then he could have left it and I wouldn’t have been upset at that time.

At SMU he still would have been making $200,000 or there abouts without a chance in hell to make $1M no matter how good his defense was.

I mean even Greg Davis at Texas barely made $500,000 in 2010 and he was the OC. Harsin at Boise made $250,000.

I am pretty sure at $500,000-600,000 of guaranteed money + incentives up to $1M would have kept him here.

His resources are light years ahead of what JJ had in terms of recruitment money, soap in locker rooms to show off to recruits, and new facilities. So its not surprise he has been keeping up with recruits.

    IWWTHM

By the way, thanks for putting out the question.

Do remember that we’re hypothesizing…if you feel that there’s no market for Mack, Rolo, and Aranda…OK. I can accept that. What I’m stating is that we don’t know for sure. And what we don’t know could tear our program apart. At least that’s something worth considering. What I was also doing was putting your idea in the context of how the budgeting process works. It doesn’t help any if the extra revenue generated by football success doesn’t go into the football budget. As the present system stands, the money would not. You asked for thoughts and I gave you mine. Rather than rebut something that isn’t workable in the present system, take in the information and re-format…just my suggestion.

These $$$$ discussions are directly tied to the future of Aloha Stadium. In order to attract private sector support whether from individuals or from corporate sponsors, we have to have great physical facilities which include naming rights. Privqte funding is what will move all public universities into the top ranks of basketball and football.

Given the current Governor’s unwillingness to do anything more than address core public safety & health issues at Aloha Stadium while waiting to tear it down will pretty much push away any significant increases in corporate support. Tha in turn will have a major impact on football’s future here.

Even under the best of circumstances, the naming rights issues at Aloha Stadium need to be addressed by both Congress and the State Legislature whereas physical improvements to The Stan would be dealt with by the Legislature – and, believe it or not, the Honolulu City Council.

Let me give you just a teensy-weensy example why this is so important to make the connection between: Three major – I mean humongous – corporations with their headquarters in Western Washington have provided upwards of $200 MILLION in support over the past decade to public institutions of higher education in the state ranging from undergraduate scholarships to capital improvements to research projects in more than 25 fields to underwriting NCAA sports programs.

What is needed to start the long & complex process of deciding whether UH will continue on its path to be a major participant in intercollegiate sports is to request that the Board of Regents hold a series of public discussions about their future here in Hawai`i.

  98. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 19, 2011 6:08 pm

Whoops!!! Let me give you just a teensy-weensy example why this is so important to make the connection between private money and public higher educaiton:

  99. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:15 pm

    BG,

Ticket sales, Corporate sponsorships, TV money, etc etc goes into the UHAD account which is then distributed out to pay for whatever sports are out there at UH.

Na Koa Football money goes directly towards funding just football related things.

So if all these things stated above don’t affect the “football budget” what does it affect? All sports except football? It’s like the BCS football money, it COULD have been used only for football if the AD wanted to, but instead it went towards paying down the deficit.

You tie in the incentives towards things that show to generate revenue. Butts in the seats = revenue, corporate partnerships = revenue, winning records = more interest by many of Hawaii’s fair weather fans (sad but its the truth), winning bowl games = more revenue for next years season ticket sales, Top 25 rankings = more TV exposure, more interests by fans and more ticket sales.

Success=more revenue…By how much is the only point in which there could be a problem with finding the breakeven point with incentives vs. revenue by success.

I don’t see why you think its not a workable system when in fact its been done at so many other schools.

I understand the budget process w/regards to State and City entities quite well and that is why I know such a means to setting up a contract can work. We already have something small scaled called bonuses. It would just be beefing that portion up while cutting back on the guaranteed money.

When Mack did his first contract he had the leverage and got a nice fatty. Now, I strongly believe Hawaii has that leverage and should work out something that will benefit UHAD’s pocketbook while keeping Mack fairly compensated. The point is we can renegotiate a contract that keeps the pressure on Mack to perform well, compensate him fairly while respecting we have some budget issues, and rewarding him well when he does well.

Also, if I am not mistaken, Pat Hill took something like a $300,000 pay cut to help the department with its budget woes.

  102. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:19 pm

    BG,

If you are referring to how if in the 2010 season Coach does well, gets all the benchmarks to get raises etc. but the money created in that season isn’t going to be realized until fiscal year 2011 so we would need to find money from the current ’10 year to pay for those bonuses then I can understand what you mean by “budgeting process not working.”

However, UHAD has floated debt from past years so it would have to do that until it realizes the money in the 2011 to pay back the “borrowed” money paid for the 2010 season.

  103. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:27 pm

I would like to know peoples opinion on something BG brought up.

If Coach Mack were to leave UH for lack of a new contract or one that pays him as much or more than what he gets now, where do you think he could possible go to get that money?

I personally don’t see this as being something UHAD has to worry about, I am more concerned that our OC Rolo might decide on greener pastures in a few years.

But lets just play the “if” game…Which school do you see him at and why?

  104. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:29 pm

I’m pretty sure the head coach would be agreeable to a reasonable cutback. After all, he took a voluntary paycut, as did his entire staff.

Now anything more than “reasonable” would have to be linked to performance. If the athletic director is unhappy with the coach’s performance — and he has not indicated he is publicly — then there could be an argument for restructuring. But there has to be a compelling reason other than to balance the budget. Because right now the team is winning, earning money and graduating its players.

Now if you tie incentives to, say, ticket sales or PPV, then the AD and associate ADs also should be held to the same standards because those are areas that fall under their jurisdiction. Maybe the AD and associate ADs should take 33 percent pay cuts that can be made up if the department turns a profit. And, maybe, lawmakers can do the same. Help the state turn a profit, earn back your original pay.

Or do the reasonable thing: Stop adding expenses. If you can’t afford to pay $150,000 to $175,000 to subsidize travel for visiting MWC teams, don’t do it. Don’t add sand volleyball. And demand a bigger cut from RainBowTique.

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:35 pm

    edit to 102,

Sorry for got to add this. If you mean that we would have to secure our entire budget for the upcoming year by budgeting the guaranteed money + potential bonuses paid out then that would be an issue as well…encumbered and not expended and the cycle the produces might be an issue UHAD would have to deal with.

  106. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:39 pm

    #104,

Careful what you wish for. If you want the legislature to be helping to turn a profit for government…lawmakers can do that…its called taxing you more and raking in the revenue. Not as nice as increasing business transactions while keeping taxes the same but still, there is a way.

Pay them a bonus to do that? har har har.

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:40 pm

    ST,

Would you call Pat Hill’s 33% pay cut in light of his 11th bowl appearance in 14 years “reasonable” ?

  108. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:41 pm

I remember when Mack was first hired. The chancellor was asked if outsiders would continue to pay for half of the head coach’s salary. She said no, and that meant UH’s share went from $400,000 to $1.1 million. I think at that point, the chancellor’s office should have on the hook for the $550,000 (the difference between paying the full amount and what a half share would be.)

I also think that Upper Campus should subsidize the non-revenue-producing women’s sports. Failing to comply with gender-equity laws is a university issue; without compliance, the school could risk losing federal funding. Therefore, the school, we should assume, should make sure the athletic department has the funding to be in compliance.

  109. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:42 pm

    IWWTHM:

Fresno State’s problems are a result of the California school systems having no money.

That’s different from UH’s athletic department incurring more debt because it wants to subsidize other team’s travels.

  110. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:45 pm

    #108,

Couldn’t agree with you anymore on the Title 9 issue.

    Interesting statement from this website…

“Although most institutions are not in compliance with Title IX, no institution has lost any federal funds as a result of non-compliance with Title IX (Office for Civil Rights states that it does not have sufficient staff/budget to fully enforce Title IX). Institutions have had to pay substantial damages and attorneys’ fees in cases brought to court.”

    http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/Content/Articles/Issues/Title%20IX/T/Title%20IX%20Q%20%20A.aspx

  111. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:45 pm

    IWWTHM:

See, I’m hopeful that lawmakers would go the other way. Find ways to improve the business climate in Hawaii with incentive programs and tax breaks.

Didn’t you run for office? How would you have increased state revenue without raising taxes?

  112. tommui June 19, 2011 6:46 pm

ST: #108 Essentially the AD will have a difficult time, if not an impossible task, of reducing the deficit since $550,000 had to be factored in to the overall budget for the AD – which $550,000 could have been used for something else (like reducing the deficit).

Your point about the gender-equity law is well taken.

  113. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:49 pm

    Title IX:

It should be met because it’s a good law. It’s about equal opportunity. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But it also costs money to meet those goals, and I think those expenses should not be just the athletic department’s responsible.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:53 pm

    #111,

Right here and now, there wasn’t a way to get immediate revenue generated to our coffers. I was looking towards eliminating some of the vacant but funded positions, and redoing the “salary” portion of government…which basically meant we needed to stop the bleeding by trying to find ways to save money on state funded retirement system and health benefits…This could be done without too much objection from the unions when looking at the longer term plan.

although to increase revenue in the long term, i subscribe to Tony Guerrero’s philosophy of Tourism is our money for now and for the long term. Need to market that to specific areas of China.

  115. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:58 pm

I think Mack’s salary is an easy target because it’s the largest by a state employee.

Seeking a reduction in the next contract would be mostly symbolic.

    The problem is structural.

The football program can afford to pay for itself — salaries, travel, scholarships.

What it can’t afford is to subsidize all of the non-revenue-producing sports.

With the accumulated debt that cannot be forgiven, and interest on the debt that must be paid, it’s in a hole it will never be able to overcome. That’s why I think Upper Campus needs to help the athletic department, either with straight cash or restructuring of merchandise agreement.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 6:59 pm

We agreed to the added expenses w/in the MWC…But, is there a point in time that we can go back and say “no” to them?

With the continuity rules for conferences in place/basically moratorium on starting new conferences…would the members of the MWC have the balls to have another secret meeting in some airport bathroom?

I bring this up because with BCS AQ status on the line etc…if Hawaii contributes in a very positive way to this..we would be in a position to say hey, we don’t want to pay that much money any more and the MWC saying fine, lets reduce your financial obligation because we want to keep your programs value.

  117. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2011 6:59 pm

OK, I’ll make it real clear, Mack won’t get another job anywhere that will pay him what he’s making at UH. He would have made a ton of money at SMU. But can he go there now? Hell no. Pay him what you think the school can afford. He and his staff has no other options.

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 7:07 pm

    #115,

The money from merchandising should go to UHAD. I don’t think the general public knows this fact.

When people buy stuff from the rainbowtique etc, they think they are supporting the athletics program. I know I used to think that way. I guess indirectly they are but still.

Wonder if Garret has the numbers as to how much money merchandise really makes.

UCLA in China is the funniest thing ever. But how nice it must be.

It would be insulting to pay him less, but I think he knows the state of Hawaii cannot afford to increase his salary at this time.

  125. BG June 19, 2011 8:00 pm

Taking a short break and got back here. Got other things to do, so I apologize for posting this and having to run.

There seems to be some slight misunderstandings about what I said. Please go back to #89 and re-read. There is nothing that I said about Mack being paid his present salary. I’m not sure how that conclusion came about. I very rarely make a “this is the way it should be” statement. IWWTHM asked for thoughts and I pointed out possibilities while supporting my statements. Lopaka has been on the blog, but I would ask him (in a nice way) for his qualifications to make the statement he did. If he is involved with tracking HC job situations nationally I would naturally assign beaucoup credance to his statement. If he is not, I am a conservative when it comes to making concrete statements without the qualifications and would take his statement as an opinion.

IWWTHM’s proposal has support. Mack already agreed to a 10% cut. There’s always the possibility he may agree to more, especially if the staff gets raises. JD is a good and fair negotiator (when upper campus isn’t involved) and I expect an amiable agreement. What I said in #89 was that my fears were in a “take it or leave it” proposal that seems to be favored by some. OK, have fun…play nicely.

  126. Lopaka June 19, 2011 8:04 pm

What’s the highest paid coach in the MWC? I guarantee Mack is making good money. Pay him what he’s currently paid and he’d be more than happy. Pay him what JJ made ($800k) and it’s still good money. You guys are getting ripped! If he quits, who cares. Somebody just as good, if not better will take his place for less.

  127. LizKauai -iPad June 19, 2011 8:06 pm

I don’t want to see Coach Mack leaving any time soon. Praying that the powers that be see it that way too. We are blessed to have a coaching team for the ages…

And Coach Gib… Brought back the excitement, great recruits and wins for UH Basketball. Please do right by all, UH!

Maybe he too will write a book about his adventures.

  132. Lopaka June 19, 2011 8:41 pm

    BG,

My qualifications are this, I’ve been in this this business for 12 years. I know what coaches are worth and I know what UH can afford. I get paid 3 times more than what UH paid me, but I also know that who I work for can afford to pay me that much. I also know that I wouldn’t get that amount without JJ unless I went to a big time school. Hawaii is getting it’s money’s worth with what they currently pay him. But I guarantee that what Mack gets paid is more than adequate, and he won’t find another place that would pay him even close to that kind of money. I have no agenda in saying this except for being a former athlete anD fan who wants to see UH succeed in the MWC.

After looking at a list of coaching salaries on the coaches hotseat website, which may or may not be accurate , I noticed that GM is the 64th ranked coach in terms of annual salary out of 120 FBS coaches. I’m not saying this should be the case, but if Hawai’i wants to be consistently in the top 25 shouldn’t they be paying a top 25 coach’s salary which at a minimum, coincidentally, is June Jone’s $2 million a year at SMU? GM is easily going to be the 2nd or 3rd highest paid coach in the MWC. However, he is currently ahead of only 8 BCS schools on the list.

  135. Kevin June 19, 2011 9:14 pm

  137. Lopaka June 19, 2011 9:18 pm

    dopaco,

I’m just saying if you really want to compare it that way, go ahead. UH cannot afford to pay that much money to a single coach unless the money comes from people outside of the University which is how most coaches are paid. i’ll tell you this, make me the lead negotiator on this deal and lets see if he turns down 1.1 mil a year. I guarantee he won’t, and if he does, I can bring in a staff that will work for less and produce just as much. JJ’s salary comes mostly from private donors outside of the University.

    I wonder…… Your Q @100.

Despite repeated requests starting right after Thanksgiving for a meeting, no one in his office followed through. A few weeks into the Session, I was told by someone on the Second Floor that Sen. Wakai would only meet with his constituents and registered lobbyists.

At that point, I was too wrapped up in other issues so I never followed up in finding someone in his district to set up an appointment. However, now I am trying once again by talking to folks in the House.

If you have any suggestions, please contact me directly.

  140. dopaco24 June 19, 2011 10:01 pm

Hello SteveM, yes it has been a long time. I’ve read every day, just haven’t posted. I get in that Lurker mode sometimes.

I was looking on an Alabama forum and read where UA spent $5 million in travel for all of their teams compared to a little over $3 million for UH. The Crimson Tide must really go all out when they travel.

Anyway, referring to coaches salaries. I don’t think it’s a good idea to give Coach Mack, who is still getting a pay cut, another pay cut. Since his hiring, he’s one of only two coaches not named Chris Peterson to win at least a share of the WAC title. He’s 2-1 against the other guy while being an underdog in each game. With that said, I wouldn’t give him a raise unless we go to another BCS game.

  141. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 10:10 pm

    BG,

“What I was also doing was putting your idea in the context of how the budgeting process works. It doesn’t help any if the extra revenue generated by football success doesn’t go into the football budget. As the present system stands, the money would not.”

This is what I was referring to in my previous posts. This is why I referred to encumbered vs. expending, fiscal cycles, carryover deficits etc.

Incentives whether or not it has to be budgeted for can still save the University money if the benchmarks aren’t made and can still be paid for with “next years” money if the revenue is generated etc. This is what I was pointing out.

My point was that the budget process for an incentive heavy contract does exist.

  142. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 10:27 pm

    #134,

When you have TV money from a BCS conference to throw around, it makes for offering coaches big time money a tiny tiny tiny bit easier.

We get around $2M from TV money while some of these other BCS schools get/will get $5-$20M+.

Also, Tsai points out a very good point. There is an unfunded mandate (Title 9) in which the entire University is liable for yet they (the upper campus) do help to fund this. Instead they take away the merchandise money where sales is driven directly by the success of the team…Remember the insanity at Rainbowtique right after the Sugar Bowl invite? None of those monies go to UHAD. Crazy right?

  143. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 19, 2011 10:33 pm

    BG,

I understand your points and intentions. I don’t want to come off sounding like I am against Mack…In fact I had questionable thoughts about him the first 2 years and now he has shown that he can lead this team to success (bowls excluded). I too believe Mack deserves a contract extension. I just think instead of the $1M guaranteed money + $100,000 or whatever in bonus, a 80-20 split or something might be better for both parties.

I don’t believe in a take it or leave it deal, but I don’t think that UH sitting on the higher chair in the negotiations is a bad thing either.

I think UHAD has to look at boosters to see if they will be willing to help out even more in the upcoming years to offset expenses. Corporate sponsors, boosters, fans are going to help…I am confident of that.

    Ok nuff said.

i seem to remember, and correct me if i’m wrong, when jj turned down the chargers and was hired, he said coming to hawaii was not about the money. it was much more. it was the people. it was hopefully his last coaching job. he would coach at hawaii as long as they wanted him and then he would retire to the big island. in the end, he had “to do what’s best for my family…”. so in the end he leaves. was it the fumblers fault even though jj did say he doesn’t talk about contracts during the season? discussions had to be after the sugar bowl. but he was already smu-zing before that game through his agent. frustrated with the direction or the lack of within the uh system and the state of hawaii he already knew. after the game, referring to hawaii on being a part of the bcs party, he says “it will never happen again…” and is gone. jj already knew…the roster cupboard was bare and he had to do what’s best for himself, which in the end, was about the money and not hawaii. fair enough. enter coach mac under those circumstances for both he and uh.

please don’t put down coach mac and the current staff like they are over paid under achievers. please don’t put your pony boosters up on a pedestal for success. please don’t sell mac’s accomplishments short. and please, don’t presume you know what coach mac is about. mahalo.

    just saying,

I didn’t say his staff was overpaid. I said I would offer him the same thing he’s getting paid. nobody else is offering him that. and i know what mack is about probably about the same as you think you know about jj and his situation. jj did turn down a lot of money to coach uh, and he coached them well. i guarantee that if mack turned down the 1.1 mil. one of his assistants would gladly take it. i’m not making like smu is better, i just know that they have the means to afford the contracts. uh does not. not putting down uh, just saying whats real in hawaii.

  157. Lopaka June 20, 2011 3:32 am

    just saying,

and that cupboard was bare excuse is old, tired and not true. he didn’t take over a crappy team, he took over the defending wac champs. i was there when it went down and know what happened. i also know mack’s attitude to the situation before getting offered the job. i post under my real name so i have nothing to hide.

Awesome to be able to watch history in the making with Rory and his dominance.

The big bummer is NBC’s decision to ommit the words ” and under God” yesterday from the reading of the Pledge of Allegiance that accompanied the beginning of its coverage. In fact, they did it twice.

So does NBC now stand for ” Nothing But Commies ” ?

Lopaka, ur#132….ditto….especially da-part bout wanting UH to succeeeed in the MW.

  162. mctruck June 20, 2011 5:18 am

Don’t know if my question been discussed before; but, the Na Koa entity, which is the official driving force behind, (financial athletic donations, etc.), do they reveal who donates and how much? Does UH have an official in charge of fund drives, or is that against NCAA regulations?

SMU gave jj a base salary and the rest funded by people with deep pockets and influence, otherwise, I don’t think SMU could’ve gotten the deal done.

  163. mctruck June 20, 2011 5:34 am

#135…..Kevin/Kazz…..sorry if u took my questioning wrong, it was not meant to, “punk” u out.

Believe me, if I could use my real name in public, I would have no problem wit dat….it just struck me as awkward that u felt that way, instead of letting people choose what works for themselves, like me.

Coach Mac has been good for us. He has become a better leader as each year has passed. Our recruiting efforts have paid off nicely. We have a nationally-visible team. We gotta pay him.

    BIK

  167. Pomai June 20, 2011 6:24 am

OK here is my 2$ worth. Leave his pay as is for his next 3 year contract (come on how hard is it to live on a million a year even in Hawaii), tell him if we can find any additional $$ it will go to the assistant coaches. There is bonus $$ in his contract already so no need any more.

Also let him know that at the end of his 3 years we will be looking for a new coach(he said he wanted to retire soon), so during those 3 years JD needs to be looking for his replacement and by his last year have that person kind of locked in.

  168. Lopaka June 20, 2011 6:38 am

    bik,

you guys are paying him. $1.1 mil is a pretty darn good paycheck coming from the university of hawaii. there aren’t any schools knocking on his door trying to lure him away. if it’s not enough for him, i’m almost positive miano, aranda, or rolo would do it for that much or even a little less and we wouldn’t miss a beat.

  169. LizKauai -iPad June 20, 2011 6:52 am

    Imagine Hawaii without UH Athletics.

Oceanic won’t be the only one who is sad.

    Have a great week, everyine!

    good morning tsaikos

  171. Lopaka June 20, 2011 6:56 am

    just saying,

you obviously don’t know jj and know nothing about what went on during the sugar bowl. for one thing, there was no secret negotiations going on during the SB. the only thing that was said to them was that he would be interested in an interview if they were willing to wait until after the sugar bowl. it took a lot of guts on smu’s part to wait that long. they fired their coach in november and were hearing it from the fans.

secondly, god forbid that after 9 years of worrying about everyone else, he made a decision that secured his family’s future for life. i was in contact with him up until the night before he made his decision and he still didn’t know if he was going to do it, because he was worried about everyone else. and even after he made the move he felt bad about it. hell, if any of us got offered double of what we make now from another company we’d all do it without any remorse.

third, he isn’t about the $$$. maryland offered him double of what he makes here at smu and he turned it down

jj at least didn’t leave for greener pastures to usc or some big name school. he took over smu, the worst team in the country at the time. you want to talk about cupboards being bare. try 25 years of losing. that team we left in 2008 was and is still better than what we have here.

  172. whitey June 20, 2011 6:56 am

    wow, get plenty negotiators.

  173. LizKauai -iPad June 20, 2011 6:58 am

PS. A Head Coach is like an Executive Chef. It’s not just about being a fry cook, pastry chef or prep cook.

Or the Maestro of an orchestra…. It’s not just about standing in front of musicians and waving a wand.

Coach Mack is special among his peers. He has what it takes to be a head coach in Hawaii. Let us not take it for granted and think that any tom, dick or Ault could do the same here.

  174. LizKauai -iPad June 20, 2011 7:01 am

#171- good point. jJ was a Fumble. He still loves Hawaii and he still plays a big part in the success of football here.

Let us not fumble again. That’s all I’m saying…

  175. haka June 20, 2011 7:10 am

I don’t think Coach Mac is looking for a raise. I think he knows the situation. He did mention he was looking for increases for his staff which makes me believe he knows what side of the bread is buttered. All this speculation is just that. Mine is that Coach Mac is not seeking more money, he loves it here and will be signed without controversy.

I don’t know about anyone else that is or may be interested in him, but I think he has done a good job and he would like to continue with the growth of the program which I see as moving in the right direction. Every situation in hiring is different. The circumstances, the timing, the availability, etc. It is what it is at the time of hiring. Can it change? Sure, that is why you re-negotiate. More money, less money, different people and different opportunities. Young coaches may succeed and then be made an offer they can’t refuse and then leave and the merry go round would start up again.

What were we talking about again? 🙂 Anyway, I think this will all work out for everyone because everyone knows the state of the State. Let’s just keep the governor out of this, ok? Just my opinion.

  176. BG June 20, 2011 7:18 am

    Good morning folks!

IWWTHM…You’ve done really well with your post last night…the discussion is still going on as I pop-in this morning. Your comments, #141+, are well taken.

Lopaka. Read your post #132. What I see tells me you have no qualifications for making your earlier comments on Mack’s possible appeal nation-wide. You know coaching and that’s not the same thing…even moreso when you have no college HC experience…correct me if I’m wrong. In fact, you contradict yourself by saying that Hawaii paid you X and you’re getting paid 3X doing (presumably) the same job on the mainland. You need to check your logic (and your bias). I can’t take your comments as factual but I will take them into consideration.

  177. BG June 20, 2011 7:21 am

  179. wowlaulau June 20, 2011 7:32 am

#171, etc give it a rest. Look in the mirror, you don’t know what Mac is thinking and you are not an expert on coches salaries. In fact if you are getting paid three times what you made at UH, I think you are over paid and if I negotiated your salary… lol..

I’m happy you are at SMU with JJ, time to move on. That is past history for Hawaii fans.

  180. koakane June 20, 2011 7:43 am

  181. Pomai June 20, 2011 8:02 am

#177 BG – now you’ve done it, Koakane is going to get all ansi pansi to go to the prayer meeting.

  182. James June 20, 2011 8:27 am

UH paid Mac 400 thousand dollars and private donors came up with 700 thousand dollars to pay his 1.1 million dollar salary. If he is worth that much, where are the private donors? They should come up with their share, if they strongly wish to keep him.

Otherwise, the talking point is 400 thousand dollars. Coach Mac should look at the 700 thousand dollars as a one time bonus.

He is still making a lot of money.

I believe Lopaka and ST are right. UH should live within its means and pay what it is able to afford. Paying $150,000 to $175,000 travel expenses for MWC teams, in my own opinion, are outrageous!

    UH is Hawaii’s team.

The administration should take a conservative stance and make sure it does not price UH sports out of the market.

  183. Lopaka June 20, 2011 9:49 am

    wowlaulau,

that’s cool. some probably think i’m overpaid. i’m glad my current employer thinks otherwise. i just said yes when they offered me the contract. as far as mack is concerned, i still don’t think he needs to be paid more than he currently makes. uh can keep him without a raise. if there is extra cash, pay the coordinators more.

  184. wowlaulau June 20, 2011 10:30 am

#183 time to move on … you continue to repeat yourself … I still think you are overpaid…

for what you do, three time what UH paid … pleassssssseeeee… lol

Think about the point I’m making and look in the mirror … my last response to you….

  185. Derek June 20, 2011 1:25 pm

So, who’s the second string punt returner now?

  186. Lopaka June 20, 2011 7:59 pm

    wowlaulau,

if you knew what uh paid, you’d know that 3x that isn’t a whole hell of a lot. You make no point except to say you don’t like me nor like the amount I make. yet you don’t know me nor even have a clue what i do nor what i make. i look in the mirror everyday and like it. i still think your grandfather shouldn’t make more than what he currently makes. apparently i’m not the only one.
