Hall ascends to No. 2 job

jeffhall

Jeff Hall, who served as the volleyball Warriors’ assistant coach this past season, has been promoted to associate head coach. Hall replaces Dan Fisher, who accepted the head coaching job  for the Concordia women’s team. Fisher’s last day in Hawaii is Friday.

UH has started to advertiser for Hall’s previous position. Vernon Podlewski, Chris McLachlin and Robyn Ah Mow have been mentioned as possible candidates.

Hall, who previously coached at Pacific and UC San Diego, will be leading the Outrigger 18 team in national tournaments this summer.

Jack Damuni, a former Kahuku High defensive back, will be joining the Warriors.

Damuni, who is 6 feet 1 and 175 pounds, played the past two seasons at Monterey Peninsula (Calif.) College.

“I wanted to play at home,” Damuni said. “Plus, I’ll be in-state. If I walked on anywhere else, I would be in a tight position with money.”

His uncle, also named Jack Damuni, played for BYU in the 1980s.

There was a scare during yesterday’s unsupervised workouts when slotback Samson Anguay went down with what appeared to be an injury to his right knee. He was helped off the field. At the end of spring training, head coach Greg McMackin named Anguay as the No. 1 punt returner.

NCAA Basketball @ Manoa Gym Starts This Week Thursday & Saturday (Some Tuesday) Nights… Sensley, Young Nash, maybe Derek Low … and the New ‘Bows (Recruits as they arrive) pretty much spread over every team …

    EXTRACT From Brian’s UHBB Site:

Fans of the annual NCAA Summer League at the Manoa District Park are in for a treat this year. The Hawaii men’s basketball team’s participation is heavy with at least one current player on each of the six teams’ rosters. Not everybody on the 2011-12 team is in, but it’s most of them. There are also several former Rainbow Warriors of recent vintage, including Julian Sensley, Bobby Nash and others.

The league starts up on Thursday, but keep in mind that all of the UH players haven’t arrived yet for the 2011-12 season. Many will be coming in closer to the July 5 start date of the second summer school session, and will join their teams at that point.

My colleague Cindy Luis received a copy of the rosters. Here’s the breakdown:

Army: Gerry Blakes, Hauns Brereton; Central Medical: Vander Joaquim; Electricians Hawaii: Zane Johnson, Trevor Wiseman, Pi‘i Minns; Kainoa Chu*; Grantco Pacific: Davis Rozitis, Bobby Miles; National Fire Protection: Ronnie Stevens, Joston Thomas; Wealth Strategy Partners: Dillon Biggs.

    * possible UH walk-on

  22. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 2:17 am

Honestly though….if you asked me to bet you $0.25 that he was the guy, I wouldn’t have.

It’s kinda a big surprise. For good or bad.

  23. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 2:29 am

While his passing isn’t something to brag about from the top of the hills, he is fast and elusive.

If, I said IF he can improve his passing game/accuracy etc…He could, I said COULD be one of the most dangerous QBs out there.

A possible dual threat QB from the RnS? Not even Alabama’s defense could stop us. hahahaha

  24. haka June 15, 2011 3:04 am

hope the sleeper is a keeper and not a grim reaper…you never know. if he shows that he has his act together, is academically sound and wants to do things the right way then I hope he gets his chance here as we have many great examples of those that were given a chance and succeeded. you never know…

  25. Garret June 15, 2011 3:11 am

Interesting to read about Forcier in today’s paper. I’ve follow his family’s situation since his first brother transferred…then his second brother transferred…now, Tate left Michigan, committed but didn’t attend Miami, and now is interested in a bunch of schools. The older 2 Forcier brothers didn’t do much at all after they transferred if I remember correctly, but Tate seemed to do better at Michigan than his brothers did before they transferred.

Tate would be able to play 2 seasons after sitting out one. If he can learn the offense and compete right away, that could be worth it. But if one of the other 7 QBs is named the starter, Tate could quit UH and hurt the APR.

  26. wafan June 15, 2011 3:11 am

  28. Garret June 15, 2011 3:14 am

Jason’s link from yesterday’s blog (I just caught up) pointed out one interesting thing about the Hawaii Bowl: UH was forced to pay for 965 Hawaii Bowl tickets, costing the school $43,290…that is not a small amount of money for UH. The Hawaii Bowl forces both teams to buy 10,000 tickets, and we know that more than 10,000 UH fans attended the game…but the Hawaii Bowl only counts the tickets sold through UH I guess.

  33. Garret June 15, 2011 3:22 am

Chad always could make such amazing catches.

Perhaps the most bizarre play of practice came when #2 WR/KR Chad Owens ran a route in man coverage and slipped on the grass, only to reach up and snag an errant pass while on the ground. The fact that it only accounted for about a three-yard gain didn’t deter those in attendance from giving the ‘Flyin’ Hawaiian’ a well-deserved applause.

Looks like UH has enough qb’s in the stables; with that said, it appears to me that Forcier does not like playing second fiddle and will most likely bolt if not selected as “the” starter…that’s not the mentality of a team player. So my opinion?….KEEP-A-WAY!!

Tate Forcier? ABSOLUTELY. I’d take ’em in a heartbeat. I refuse to believe everything that is written in the national sports media. His family might have something to do with all the drama, but when all is said and done, he might be a good kid. Hawaii has a special affect on players. This is certainly a gamble I’d take.

    BIK

  52. kawika49 June 15, 2011 7:09 am

#48 head for Schofield, pass it go over the airplane bridge, keepgoing stay to your right, go over the next bridge and keep going. If you reach the Polynesian Cultural center you went too far. Turn around and go straigh, it should be to your right afteryou pass Kahuku.

    Got that?

  53. bigislandkurt June 15, 2011 7:17 am

…Forcier’s impending arrival at UHH would come with much national fanfare. I don’t mind if he’s super competitive or comes across as not being so nice-nice. If he has RESPECT — for himself, his teammates, and the UH program, I’d have no problem with this kid.

    BIK

  54. Stephen Tsai June 15, 2011 7:20 am

I have no idea if UH has an interest in Forcier, or whether he’s academically eligible. (He was ineligible for Michigan’s bowl game.)

All I know is he contacted UH, and they’re free to talk.

We’ll see how this plays out.

  55. Kekoa June 15, 2011 7:25 am

K-49 ~ No mo airplane bridge. It only took them 30 years ‘n 3 wars for them to build the new 50 yard bridge!

  56. Stephen Tsai June 15, 2011 7:26 am

I don’t know whether UH is searching for quarterbacks.

But it seems interesting that UH is now a place where quarterbacks want to go. Jeremy Higgins and the Wyoming QB (now going to Vanderbilt) initiated contact with UH.

  57. kawika49 June 15, 2011 7:27 am

#56 Ekalamai, been away from Oahu, not long enough.

  58. Lava June 15, 2011 7:43 am

ST, do you know if the decision by the Wyoming qb was tied at all to whether he’d see playing time in the near future? I’m guessing a guy that saw that much action would entertain a move unless there was some assurance that he’s be the projected #1 after sitting out.

My guess is the UH staff would likely stick to the scripted “it’s an open competition, and the best man will lead the team, to be determined after camp.” It’s worked so far.

  59. Kekoa June 15, 2011 7:43 am

  66. BG June 15, 2011 8:06 am

My quick $.02 about giving second chances. The poster boys are probably Colt, Davone, and Pisa. Most folks know that Colt and Davone had clean records except their one run-in with the law. Pisa was another story since he had a history of trouble. JJ considered many but only picked a few. Their families’ history and attitude was a big factor. How they responded in a 1-1 interview was another. Both Colt and Davone were fairly easy gambles. Pisa only was given a chance because of his mom, Ruta Aunese. Once June met her it was a done deal. One only had to meet her to feel the inner strength and determination of this woman. Her spiritual strength was ten-fold. Pisa knew that he had a final chance to make good and his mom was going to see to it. This is not hearsay. I spoke to both separately, 1 on 1. Early on, June took chances to bring talent in. More than a few were not successful gambles, so he refined his process and criteria to a point that he became very successful with it. It would be interesting to ask Mack what his philosophy is on the subject.

  67. Eagle June 15, 2011 8:07 am

    RE: # 57 –

seems U.H. has finally established a Lasting Rep — Beyond JJ; Rolo is now an established OC plus 12 years of passing stats in the Top Ten should have cemented the System and QB-Receiver School mantle a long time ago — MORE Than one or two Davone’s or Salas’s every other year or so …

The Recent High Drafts and the QBs are making it look like it might stick …

The early pub & rep so far don’t sound like Forcier knows how to be a team player … Another 6-0 QB versus 6-3/6-5 athletic prototypes ? Besides coming from a high visibility neighborhood, can he really out-perform the record setting & high flying U.H. QBs already on-board, doing their homework, knowing how to TEAM when his whole family culture/background seems to have problems with PT? ?

    [Trust ROLO to determine…]

[…and Jessica Alba Really Does Light Up the room — saw her standing next to (fab herself) Eva Longoria and it was like night and day …]

  68. papajoe2 June 15, 2011 8:09 am

I like the fact that Forcier is considering UH. Bring the best here. I believe the coaches will do what’s best for the program to succeed. Since he wouldn’t be eligible until after Moniz and Austin use up their eligibility, may the best man win the job. Its always good to have a more than capable backup to come in just in case. I could be wrong, but didn’t Colt and Moniz, not start their first game here? Seems like we will be having very good QBs from now and into the future. Too bad only a few actually get much practice time, much less game time.

  69. Stephen Tsai June 15, 2011 8:15 am

Wait …. you saw Jessica Alba and Eva Longoria together …

  70. Da Punchbowl Kid June 15, 2011 8:18 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Yep, Tsai knows when to hold ’em and when to lay the cards on the table. It doesn’t appears that Forcier (gotta love the kaona in THAT name) is a done deal yet. We’ll see soon enough.

The bigger question is whether he can come in and master the RnS quickly enough to bypass the very able QBs in the stable.

Any interest in UH from a player of this caliber speaks well volumes about the program.

  71. papajoe2 June 15, 2011 8:18 am

Hawaii is a perfect place to forget about the past and get a new start on the football field. There are not as much media attention (sorry, ST) as the high profile schools, and is a place that you learn from, not only the teammates in general, but the people who live here. It would be more relaxing to live here than in Michigan, although not everyone like the lifestyle here ala the gansta basketball player who left. I think the word for it is ALOHA.

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid June 15, 2011 8:21 am

    Mr. Tsai –

Your pics improve. Great stuff, like whetting our appetites for the setting of the feast come season time. Excitement and anticipation builds. Keep up the good work.

  73. Da Punchbowl Kid June 15, 2011 8:23 am

please mentally delete the word “well” from the last sentence in post #71. 😳

  74. tommui June 15, 2011 8:28 am

McTRUCK #44 – If he does transfer, and if he does not become THE QB, would he disappear from the scene?

Wouldn’t he lose another year of eligibility leaving him with only two years for someplace else. For some reason, I think it would only be one year left but it may be two.

  75. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 8:33 am

My gut feeling is that UH and Tate will mutually agree that Hawaii is not the best fit.

I think he will have a lot of explaining and convincing to do of his personal issues and show that he is head steady…a totally separate issue from his football skills off course.

Also, the guy has shown interest in several schools (some much much closer to home) and did campus visits there. He is just throwing his name out there to various schools to see which one will give him the best offer/option to get a starting job. He might get that most easily at a place like SJSU where they could probably use him right away.

I love the possibilities though, and guess we can’t say we don’t get interest from blue chip players anymore right? haha. He can run, he is fast, he can play under center (maybe some new redzone plays?). Just need to figure out if he can learn our system and if he is willing to earn it and not have it handed to him.

  76. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 8:48 am

I also think that even if Rolo and Mack are salivating over getting someone with his potential, they are still going to play it cool to anyone that asks.

The last thing you want is a kid who has had his ego stroked to read that Coach XYZ is dying to get you to play. no no no.

Coaches gotta play the cards close to the vest…so even if they may seem uninterested or “content”…that just may be part of the overall plan.

Tate: Hey I want in on your program.

Mack: Yeah kid, but we are stacked at QB.

Tate: Well I know I can compete with anyone out there and can bring this team success if you gave me a spot.

    Mack: I’ll think about it.

  77. al June 15, 2011 8:53 am

    forcier…

    if he is academically able.

    if he walks on.

if in a one-on-one interview shows enough humble.

if his parents aren’t as sassy as they are made out to be.

    if ……….

    yah a lot of if’s.

will his presence upset the apple cart(load of qb’s)?

then again, no different than higgins coming on board or alo in january.

my guess is that he’ll end up at sdsu or sjsu.

  78. al June 15, 2011 8:54 am

if they wanted him they would have said so by now.

  79. Derek June 15, 2011 8:57 am

You have to also count Justin Alo, who is coming in January as a grayshirt. He has a great upside and if he gets stronger and bigger he might just surprise a lot of people. As far as Forcier I have mixed feelings. The only way I would accept him is if he agress to redshirt the first year as a walk-on, prove himself in practice and if does then put him on scholarship.

You have to remember that Colt Brennan’s first year was a walk-on. As it is, if Forcier joins the program we would have 7 QBs vying for the starting job (Graves, Shutter, and Nielson as Juniors, Spain as a 3rd yr SO., Jeremy Higgins, redshirt SO., Alo, true frosh, and Forcier, 4th yr Jr. Seems like that’s a lot of QBs. And we are still looking for the “holy grail”. Al is still looking!!!

ST ~ Mahalo for the pictures of practice!

  84. Couch potato June 15, 2011 9:24 am

alrighty then. off topic but not family related: what is the purpose of studying and finding black holes? i don’t see any in my lifetime swallowing me up. they’re friken like millions or whatevers lightyears away! ahhhh, got that off of my lazyazz chest.

  85. al June 15, 2011 9:26 am

bringing in forcier and his question marks will scare away the hs qb’s we are currently pursuing.

  86. al June 15, 2011 9:28 am

with moniz graduating, the spring of 2012 may determine who starts later that year. a depth chart will result and with four juniors-to-be vying for the one grail, i believe that one or two will depart the univeristy of hawaii in search of playing time once the projected starter is named.

    others may leave as well.

therefore, it is imperative to have a boatload of qb’s.

  87. Stephen Tsai June 15, 2011 9:53 am

Barring an injury to Moniz or Austin this year, the Warriors will enter 2012 without a quarterback who has started an NCAA game. That’s not so unusual, given the playing cycle is five years. But it also means that it will be very interesting when UH opens at USC in 2012.

  88. hawaiiansun June 15, 2011 9:58 am

the great tate forcier aquisition is a no brainer. he is better than at least five of our qb scholies in stock without tossing one throw on lower manoa. even then, im giving credit for system experience for the remainder. look, forcier was “forced-out” by a system that looks for rbs as much as throwers. michigan recruits abram tanks to block for world-class sprinters. why not leave A2? why not scout about? that’s smart, not suspect. . and why shouldnt his parents gouse? they raised their boys to excell. nothing wrong in wanting the best for your kids. we only need to look @ our warrior mascot, vili, to grasp the nature of parents wanting the best for their children-athletes. ever hear of michele wie whom hawaii worships. c’mon, let the blue-chips fall where they may. what rolo and mac should be focusing on is pruning the qb unit and cutting-back on branches that are not bearing fruit.

there is no entitlement in college football if u dont produce.

  89. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 10:00 am

ST, I like that pic of Rolo.

He looks so much better without a beard.

I could say the same for Dirk Nowitzki.

Why didn’t he shave during the Finals?

  90. Couch potato June 15, 2011 10:07 am

As Momo mentioned, we’ll be out of the country for 11 days…I worked *crazy* hours yesterday to get my work done before the trip, and have more work (and packing) today. I hope that there are a lot of good recruiting news to catch up with when I get back.

Guess you’ll be heading for Barcelona soon. Drop us a post or 3 if you find free wifi or buy the satellite modem minutes (hey, modem comms can be a business expense, right?). When I think about it, satellite modem seems very expensive if I was cruising off Mexico–but in the middle of the Mediterranean… 😕 Same rates? Anyway, send a data burst our way if you can–especially about what 3 generations of your family are doing on the Epic.

…or just take a real vacation and leave your laptop at home and your cell phone in the cabin safe.

  92. Couch potato June 15, 2011 10:13 am

hawaiiansun. what is “gouse”? anywhozit, i still say no to the QB.

  94. hawaiiansun June 15, 2011 10:21 am

#91, couch. same blogger, sorry. sometimes the monicor is empty and need to manually insert and inadvertently type hawaiiansun rather than warriorsun. it’s more lackadaisical than intentional.

    Howzit, everyone!

    Interesting developments, lately.

Still fighting with this sinus problem, and I gotta get on a plane in about 16 hours.

Kekoa, the number papajoe2 or A-Joe sent me a few months ago through Facebook does not work. They sent me a number with a 917 area code, or something. And, if I change it to 808, I get a Big Island business.

gone for the day. gone couch fishing.

    aloha.

forcier coming to hawaii could also open up a pipeline to the rich recruting grounds of san diego.

  108. warriorsun June 15, 2011 10:30 am

you are sharp today couch. grouse=gouse (grumble).

i say yes to focier, bc we will be in need of quality come 2012. jmo. our cupboards are bare. in case you are unaware–we play usc, byu, afa, csu, sdsu and fsu on the road that year….if you say no to tate, please mention qbs from our current stable you believe are capable to lead our O in ’12.

    we need at least 3-deep.

  109. al June 15, 2011 10:32 am

is forcier better than half of the current qb’s?

  110. Kazz June 15, 2011 10:32 am

So what is the supposed “deal” with Forcier’s parents?

    Overbearing??? Pushy? Rude?

Wanting the best for your children will make parents fall over a cliff and rightfully so, but at the same time, the lessons they teach their children along the way in pursuing goals or working your way into the best athletic and academic situation possible is just as important as being “pushy” or whatever they are perceived to be.

Wanting the best for your child and doing what you can do ensure that is one thing. Being jerks about it is another… (passing along the family traits, if you will…)

In talking with parents of student-athletes, I’ve been lucky enough to meet those that know where their boundries are. In college you are a young adult and kids need to learn mommy and daddy aren’t going to fight your battles for you.

Like Denzel Washington’s character in “Remember The Titans”:

Oh that’s sweet, yeah, waive goodbye to your mama boy, cause when you get on that bus, you ain’t got no mama.”

  118. A-joe June 15, 2011 10:47 am

I’m sure Mac & Co. will do their due diligence with Forcier. The last thing they need on their hands for a few years is another Graunke.

  119. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 10:51 am

Last I heard, he was playing pro-football in Europe.

TG was never the high school phenom that tate was and never put up the numbers forcier did as a true frosh before suffering injuries. they are different style qbs.

    TG had other issues.

im assuming tate will be cleared academically by UH and otherwise.

if he is–and opts for hawaii–the warriors score bigtime. jmo.

the forcier bros transferred from programs that either went through coaching changes (neuheisel/rodriquez) or had an all-american nesting with tenure (chad henne). the family is gung-ho football, wolverine supporters and run a successful limousine business in the sd area.

great second chance for forcier and i believe if he has it hawaii will present the best opportunity for him to fight for top dog. im sure david graves would welcome the competition. it makes both better and adds demension.

  123. al June 15, 2011 11:14 am

118…the exodus will begin after the spring camp when the depth chart going in to the summer is announced. i believe at least two will go elsewhere.

  124. al June 15, 2011 11:17 am

it would be interesting if say forcier comes here. imagine if he and graves are the top two. both would drive opposition nuts with their collective ability to run (and fast).

  125. warriorsun June 15, 2011 11:22 am

#124, not according to the summer camp invitee list ST promulgated. in a nutshell, we need quality, not quantity.

You know that the perception of the WAC is bad when the *Big Sky* commissioner is looking down on the WAC. It sounds like the Big Sky is trying to get Idaho and Utah State…

Fullerton said the WAC has had contact with at least six Big Sky schools during its recent expansion effort — Montana, Montana State, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sacramento State and Portland State. Idaho State is also a member of the Big Sky.

“It’s not that we’re not ready to move. We’ve got schools that are ready to move if they get a good proposal. They could move and make it very easily. Not being ready to move is not correct,” Fullerton said.

“We’re in a better place than the WAC is.”

Fullerton said WAC members Idaho and Utah State would be ideal members of his league and said he is exploring creative ways to lure the two schools. Idaho was a member of the Big Sky from its 1963 inception until 1996.

“If down the road something happens that those guys understand and realize they can’t catch the big guys and there’s something else we can do that makes sense and bring some efficiencies back to the budgets of those schools … Utah State and Idaho are the right kind of schools,” Fullerton said.

  129. warriorsun June 15, 2011 11:31 am

    forcier and graves–that would work.

imagine if rolo used graves at slot–he could pass on the reverse option.

the possibilities are vast and makes hawaii a better team. graves is such a versatile athlete he could start at several positions on both sides of the ball.

  130. al June 15, 2011 11:31 am

wsun…i am talking about next year. after the spring of 2012 the depth chart going in to the summer of 2012 will be announced. it is then that i believe a couple or two qb’s will be leaving the program in search of pt.

  131. bigislandkurt June 15, 2011 11:33 am

If Forcier was to be a Warrior, nothing will be handed to him. He’d probably have to walk-on, play on the scout team all year long, and go out and earn a scholly the year after.

    BIK

  132. bigislandkurt June 15, 2011 11:37 am

Yes, Forcier has skills. He is not better than 1/2 of our QB’s. I think it’s more like 2/3. 🙂

The only thing going against Tate is all of the off the field stuff. On the field, you can’t deny his skill set. Bradduh is bad.

I agree that Mac and players will do their due diligence. If TF becomes a Warrior, it won’t happen through simple, knee-jerk reactions. I’m excited about the possibility tho!

  133. al June 15, 2011 11:37 am

what makes forcier an intriguing situation is that recently three top qbs that we were looking at have committed elsewhere.

  134. al June 15, 2011 11:47 am

last one…so this 4 star wr a top 20 nationwide guy, who earlier committed to usc, says, that he now is going to trip a few places. hawaii is of high interest to him because we toss the ball about often and his qb is coming here. that would be justin alo, the qb.

  135. RupertDaStupert June 15, 2011 12:01 pm

Since I’ve been folllowing UH Football in 1966, this years team is the only one loaded with talent at every spot. Not one perceivable weakness. Moniz is gonna be outta sight. Rolo is going to release him and a “frankenstein monster” is born. The receivers are fast, faster, and zoom gone. They will look like Ashley Lelie and Greg Salas combined. The O line will make sumo history. The defense, Oh boy. John Hardy-before he leaves here he will be an urban legend! Cory Peredes-Superman returns! The db’s, Rich Miano created a monster! The DL, JACK MASCH, OH BROTHER GET THE AMBULANCE READY!!!! THE LB. IF I WAS THE OPPOSITION, I”D HIDE BEHIND MY SISTERS SKIRT! LOOKS LIKE GREG MCMACKIN BEAT JUNE JONES TO AREA 51, NEVEDA. AND NOW TATE WANTS TO TRANSFER HERE. THIS THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF UH, A 5 STAR QB WANTS TO COME HERE. IF IT TRANSPIRES, WHOA BOY, THERE GOES THE BALLGAME. NEXT SEASON TATE PORCIER WILL THROW 75%, 61 TOUCHDOWNS, BEFORE ROLO CAN STOP HIM AND WHY WOULD HE? THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!!!! AND THE UH BASKETBALL TEAM. THE 2ND FABULOUS FIVE. IT’S NOT HOW MUCH LOSSES THEY’LL GET, IT’S HOW MANY WINS! AWESOME!!!! IT TRULY IS THE GOLDEN AGE OF UH SPORTS!!!!

  136. Souljah June 15, 2011 12:01 pm

Must be Darreus Rogers that you’re talking about…maybe we’ll get him because of the NCAA hammer coming down.

  137. al June 15, 2011 12:10 pm

    hoping.

  138. RupertDaStupert June 15, 2011 12:15 pm

OF COUSE THE GAME IS PLAYED ON THE FIELD AND ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. BUT WITH ROLO RUNNING THE OFFENSE AND ARANDA RUNNING THE DEFENSE AND TOMEY RUNNING THE SPECIAL TEAMS, HARDLY LIKELY THE UH WILL FAIL. AND GIB, WHAT BUSINESS DOES HE HAVE HAVING A 7″ FORWARD? GIB HAS LOADED FOR BEAR!!!!

  139. haka June 15, 2011 12:23 pm

    al,

i would never bet you in golf….to many “birdies”.

    upside, downside, risk, reward…

yes, we have a lot of qb’s and prospects but, if forcier had no baggage would he be welcomed with open arms or still fall victim to the numbers crunch?

now rogers would be great for sure!

ahhhhhhh, the men of summer are coming soon!

    go warriors!

  144. d1shima June 15, 2011 12:41 pm

Darreus Rogers committed to USC in January but the four-star wide receiver from Carson, Calif., said this past weekend at a 7-on-7 tournament that he considers it a soft pledge and he will definitely take visits.

“A soft verbal is a soft verbal,” Rogers said. “I can’t sign until I’m a senior so I still have my options open.”

Arizona State, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii are the four main contenders for Rogers, a 6-foot-2, 194-pound prospect who finished with 45 receptions for 1,347 yards and eight touchdowns in his junior season.

Hawaii might be a surprise but Carson quarterback Justin Alo signed there last recruiting cycle and Rogers might want to follow him to the islands.

“My quarterback Justin Alo is going out there to play so I’m going to take a trip out there in January,” Rogers said.

“It’s a big passing team. I love that and I’m a receiver so they spread the field out and I can do what I do best.”

  147. d1shima June 15, 2011 12:49 pm

…receivers like to go where they throw, throw, throw; not where they can watch the QB option the DE.

A wise coach once asked: “Do you want to spend the next 4 years blocking the Strong Safety?”

  148. Chee Hoo June 15, 2011 12:51 pm

I can just picture Mac now….sitting at his desk licking his chops! A big 20 oz. Ribeye steak from DK Kodama’s! Forcier’s the best option at QB in 2012 for UH! Experience and talent that none of the returnees will have next year. 2012 is not so worrisome…it’s the 2013 schedule! USC, BYU, Washington, Boise, Fresno, Nevada, Navy, Air Force, Army, etc. Gotta roll the dice Mac!

  149. HawaiiMongoose June 15, 2011 12:51 pm

Re #129, the Big Sky is a better place all right… a better place for your football program to disappear into obscurity and irrelevancy. No FCS conference comes close to any FBS conference from a media coverage standpoint.

Mac’s decision is will he lose Alo if Forcier comes.

Forcier can play here as well as any we have had before

Parents are cool, they just let the kids choose too much in HS and College

Watch the Furman QB next year. Brothers are very similar

  155. A-House June 15, 2011 1:12 pm

    al:

if a qb should leave after next spring ball, how many year(s) would he have as the “trio” would be RS juniors in 2012?

only other would be Spain as Alo would grey-shirt in 2012 and, maybe, red shirt in 2013. yet, Spain would be a red shirt frosh in 2011 – watching and learning from Moniz and Austin.

if Forcier comes, at least UH will have an experienced qb to start 2012 ( provided he wins the job) – would be excellent competition for Graves – if both excellent, Rolo can go with a dual qb system – that would really mess up DCs minds.

of course, we could have another 2009 where the top 3 go down and #4 has to step in.

  156. Kazz June 15, 2011 1:15 pm

Maybe Utah State and Idaho need to re-evaluate some things if an FCS football conference is targeting them. 😯

  157. Derek June 15, 2011 1:18 pm

Interesting roster for the UH men’s basketball team.

    1. Zane Johnson – SG, Sr.

    2. Vander Joaquim – C, Jr.

    3. Trevor Wiseman – SF, Soph.

    4. Joston Thomas – PF, Jr.

    5. Bobby Miles – PG, Soph.

    6. David Rozitis – C, Jr.

    7. Dominick Brumfield – SF, Jr.

    8. Gerry Blakes, PG, SG, Fr.

    9. Ronnie Stevens, PF, Fr.

    10. Dillon Biggs, SF, Fr.

    11. Shaquille Stokes, PG, Fr.

    12. Hauns Brereton, SF, Jr.

    13. Deshaun Mitchell, SG, SF, Jr.

    14. Miah Ostrowski, PG, Sr. (on football scholarship)

    15. Pii Minns, SG, Soph (walk-on)

    16. Tyler McDaniels, PF, Jr. (walk-on)

    17. Kainoa Chu, PG, SG, Fr. (walk-on)

Re #136, and the observation “this years team is the only one loaded with talent at every spot,” that begs a good question. What is viewed as the weakest link on the team?

In my opinion, it is kicker. We have some candidates, but I am not aware of anyone capable of deep kickoffs. Giving the ball up at the 35-40 yard line, instead of the 20-25, may hurt us at some point. Someone to kick it deep would be a nice weapon to have.

  161. al June 15, 2011 1:38 pm

  167. jm2375 June 15, 2011 1:52 pm

d1 – as I was paying the bill, the restaurant was informed that there would be 100+ people coming in, mostly old ladies in white muus.

  168. jojo® June 15, 2011 1:55 pm

jm#### – you forgot to mention that gigi was NOT part of the ladies in muus group…

    HI GIGI!!!

    An AARP flash mob?

  172. d1shima (Aria'd) June 15, 2011 2:02 pm

    A-house/al,

I’ll post something later tonight about what can happen with a “step-down” transfer.

  173. jojo® June 15, 2011 2:05 pm

    d1 – hmmm, Gigi-fest? No, I don’t think so. Maybe the AARP flash mob…:D

  174. warriorsun June 15, 2011 2:05 pm

couple of points to clear up the air pertaining to alo.

alo grayshirts 2011, enrolls in jan 2012 and redshirts in sept. if forcier enrolls he has 3 to play 2. which means his last year will be in 2013, the same as graves. alo will be a redshirt soph in 2014, when both are gone. if he is good, he will vie for a starting position. that gives him three years at the helm. no one, forcier or graves, is a threat to alo unless he doesnt cut the mustard. that is the bottomline. if he has the stuff, the field is clear for a three-year tenure at starting QB.

  175. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 2:06 pm

    172,

Yes and probably performing the song The Living Years.

  176. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 2:08 pm

    #175,

Thanks for clearing this issue up. I think some fans would be worried about that particular conflict looking down the road.

If its a non-issue, might as well give the guy a shot.

  177. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 2:14 pm

Forcier’s parents own some kind of limousine service in cali…I’m guessing that money is not going to be an issue and that not giving Tate a scholarship right away will not be an issue too.

  178. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 2:15 pm

    gigi-fest???

    old ladies in white muus?

    haha

yeah, I am an old lady

    but no mo white muu.

Glad you were all able to find parking over at Happy Days.

Last time I was there, I spent 20 minutes circling around for a parking stall.

    Delicious dim sum, tho!

    #149.

the 2012 schedule is not too worrisome?

    get real!

playing usc and byu back-to-back on the road to start the season?

    where do you sleep, dude?

going from sea-level at the coliseum in la to lavell edwards stadium in provo is brutal. the altitude is the same as reno. playing at 6,600-feet at falcon stadium? playing at 5,200-feet at sony lubick field at hughes stadium? then playing fresno state and sdsu, also on the road? c’mon. that is the toughest schedule i have ever seen for a warrior team.

being on the road is worth a TD. add another for elevation. add more points for playing 2-weeks on the road….geez, this is not Xbox.

the last time we played sea-level to elevation on the road, back-to-back, was against army and colorado in 2010. tell me what happened at boulder, second-half?

add it up….and while you are still configuring–consider we will have a brand-new QB.

    not worrisome?

    easy to say….

  180. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 2:34 pm

    WSun,

    just curious.

do you predict a losing season come 2012?

  181. lava June 15, 2011 2:39 pm

Al, yes all the lava and Lava posts come from the same sad sack. I never realized my id appeared with caps and without. I guess it defaults depending if I’m home or away.

So in your seasoned opinion, what’s the weak link on the team this year?

  182. Kazz June 15, 2011 2:43 pm

    CONGRATS TO KOLTEN WONG!!! 1ST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN… AMERICAN… A-M-E-R-I-C-A-N…

  183. warriorsun June 15, 2011 2:49 pm

    honest question gigi.

brutal schedule for openers in 2012. donovan must learn to schedule back-to-back road trips as elevation to sea-level venues where possible. he did the opposite twice in three years.

secondly, we will presumably starting a newbee at QB and our OL will once again be re-stocked.

the positives are aranda and an improving D– top to bottom, especially speed on the perimeters– and experience and athleticism at the skill positions on O, including wrs, slot and rbs.

we need to see how our incoming frosh and jucos perform this year bc they will roll-over to 2012.

just know, hawaii is on the threshhold of bigtime football once we enter the mwc in ’12 and recruiting must step-up to remain competitive….but as it stands, 7-6 would not be seen as a bad season…..tell u more if we score tate forcier.

  184. Dennis Halloran June 15, 2011 3:03 pm

#175 you are right about Alo, I forgot the RS year Three years from now he will be 200 plus and weight is his only minus right now

  185. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:05 pm

    #181,

No not a losing season but not a 10 win season either. Should we have an experienced and talented playcaller on the field it will make for a gratifying season.

2013 on the other hand could be real special.

  186. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 3:10 pm

    Don’t know about Tate.

Question is, will he promote team chemistry?

I have an odd feeling that he is a prima donna.

Will he fit in like Colt did?

  187. Slugger June 15, 2011 3:16 pm

I don’t usually weigh in on recruits, but Tate Forcier sounds like someone we do not want in the program. With the kinds of actions and academic problems he’s had, I don’t care if he’s a highly rated QB. We don’t need those kinds of problems. When you recruit, you look at the whole person, and so far Mack & Co. have done a great job at bringing in players with stability. We don’t need the drama or academic question marks that he’s had. You want to go into the Hawaii Bowl and not have your #1 QB? What about the morale of the team members who’ve been working their tails off to keep their grades up and work with their QB only to be left without him going into a(ny) game when you’ve all practiced together to get that timing down? Yes, you have backup QBs, but that’s not the ideal situation. I say NO to Forcier.

  188. Slugger June 15, 2011 3:18 pm

Congrats to Kolten Wong, First Team All American!

  189. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:23 pm

    Slugger 189,

Hope you would have said no to Brennan, Pisa, and Bess too. I am not going into detail about the subject matter of their problems but we all know they got their 2nd chance and made great use of it and turned into huge success stories.

As to the academic issues I don’t want to speculate if its easier to do well at UH than it is UM and whether he could succeed academically here.

All I feel is that its a gamble that we should take.

  190. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:27 pm

    #188,

Do you remember the Timmy Chang years and the “rumors” of internal fighting and drama?

  191. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:35 pm

    gigi,

here is a highlight video of Tate…what do you think of his mobility/speed?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX4pBvWpVSo

  192. al June 15, 2011 3:44 pm

tate forcier…while many of us air our opinions, it is just that, however, we have formed our opinions based upon what we heard through the grapevine and by some ann arbor newsreporters.

people tend to make issue out of the negative or hearsay.

what we don’t know is, the character and moral fiber of this youngster who may have been steered in the wrong directions. he may have been told this and that but the truth be told was never followed up upon.

that coach is no longer there brings some suspicions to me.

what ever it is, it is hard for me to judge a book by its cover so to speak.

didn’t colt go through that similar washing machine with the biased wringer at the end of the cycle during his brief stint at colorado?

and yet we are casting him out before we even know who he is?

for me, i’d let the coaches decide. i’d give him another chance because we all deserve a second chance.

    ,,,nuff said.

  193. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 3:44 pm

#193 The video shows games played at home, though.

How was he on the road?

    Nevertheless, I am impressed!

UH might be easier than UM academicly.

My cousin graduated from UH, then attended UM Dental School.

He said it was tough to get an A at UM.

  194. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:50 pm

    #194,

Not to mention we don’t even know how serious he is about coming here. Not that its the same but I sent my application in to Loyola Marymount for college, got in, but never intended to go..just wanted to kinda test the waters and see what came of it. i also never intended to go to UH either but well I did. lol.

  195. Dennis Halloran June 15, 2011 3:51 pm

UH football players have a much tougher time than Michigan. Big 10 is short hop from school to school as is the SEC. Away games mean you have to be disciplined at getting missed classes covered. Some schools have three games before classes start in Pac 10.

Any former players want to post what their class schedules were like and how they dealt with so much away time?

  196. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:51 pm

Also, firing Carr and hiring Rod was the worst idea ever. I know I said it before, but just saying haha.

  197. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 3:55 pm

    #197,

It’s going to be hard to get some ideas on this but I was wondering more about the difficulties of doing well in class. In general is it harder to get a A at UM?

I have a friend who got her undergrad degree at Yale and then came to UH to follow up on some classes to prep her for application to med school. She claimed that when it came to natural (hard) sciences, it was basically the same. When it came to some of the english and social sciences the way they crafted exams and grading system made it a whole lot easier to get an A.

  198. al June 15, 2011 3:58 pm

    lava…weaknesses?

    lava,

well, on offense we replace so many starters, so where do we begin?

the oline, oh poor oline, the much maligned oline. we are young in this department, but, we have studs. the make or break to me is in the hands of gordy shaw. in 1999, cavanaugh took an oline that, the year before couldn’t block their grandma’s from going to the bathroom and made them a servicable oline winning what 9 games? “trust your technique…”

so can shaw bring them up to snuff?

  199. al June 15, 2011 4:00 pm

wide receivers/slots…the loss of salas, pilares, bradley is devastating. we again have athletes now and coming in to the fall camp. this group will be bigger, faster, stronger but again very young. can mouse and rolo coach them up?

they have some game time experience but nothing that they could write home about last year. who’s fault?

instead of trying to get salas and pilares some draftable numbers, we should have been playing more guys in the fourth quarter. by the third game miah, stutz, bright, amadi, and company should be on track with moniz. but, again i’ll be surprised if we come out firing on all cylinders on day one especially when the oline is trying to find their way.

  200. al June 15, 2011 4:04 pm

one running back position, but, such a huge one.

sterling jackson, the weight is upon your shoulders while you look over your shoulders cuz here comes joey. block, block, block is priority one for the rb especially because you guessed it, the young oline will need time and coaching to get there. therefore, the rb will be a blocking back first and runner second just often enough to keep the rush honest.

they will be called blocking backs or bb’s for short. again all new bb’s…will they do it early. once more they need for brian smith to coach em up.

  201. al June 15, 2011 4:04 pm

qb…moniz is. but, he needs to watch the completions while still standing and not on his back.

  202. Slugger June 15, 2011 4:05 pm

    iwwthm,

No, I wouldn’t have said No to Colt, Bess, etc. Colt’s & Davone’s transgressions were a one-time event. Davone was paying for his involvement; Colt plead guilty to a lesser charge and was moving on at a smaller school. There is a humbleness to both Davone & Colt’s behavior after the fact. I don’t get that from reading about Tate. Haven’t read a lot of articles yet, but the sense I get from the articles so far is that this kid is far from humble (Wiki=”He is considered the first high school football player to post his scholarship offer letters on the internet.[17]”) The May 26, 2011 incident of hanging outside of a third story window is RECENT. After leaving Michigan (being academically ineligible for the Jan. 1 game), talking about transfering to Miami (which he didn’t), and this incident in May, it doesn’t appear to me that he stable. If he wants to play football in college, and was ruled academically ineligible at Big M, I’d think he’d get himself back in school and work on his grades in the meantime. It is “college” football after all.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – A former University of Michigan quarterback was the subject of a strange police call in Grand Rapids last month, according to an officer report released to 24 Hour News 8 on Thursday.

Tate Forcier, who quit the football team earlier this year, had locked himself in a bedroom of a third-floor apartment April 22, and was leaning out the window, the report states.

from wikipedia (you can have your own opinion of the validity of info on wikipedia)

The youngest and smallest of three quarterback brothers, Tate, whose real name is Robert, acquired his nickname from the movie Little Man Tate.[2][5] While he was in middle school, the family moved 60 miles (97 km) from San Diego to San Clemente, after football powerhouse Mater Dei High School, which is Matt Leinart’s alma mater, recruited his oldest brother, Jason.[2] Meanwhile, the family ran the San Diego Bus and Limousine Company, the family business in San Diego.[2] With the parents commuting Robert was often on his own as the little man of the house.[2] The lack of academic attention left Tate with poor study skills and by his sophomore year he had to enroll at Charter School of San Diego.[2]

    YAC.

What is the potential for the yards after catch for 2011?

In 2008 we had speed and some skill. Yes they could catch, but the YAC was a MAJOR concern. Former coach Stutz elaborated on it in 2008.

Once comfortable as a unit, the YAC comes. Just by running the routes and whatnot during practice doesn’t seem to be enough for our slots to gain the confidence to follow up and burst through after the catch.

Right now it feels like 2011 might be a slightly improved version of 2008’s offense, only that the offensive line is not having to deal with a NEW line coach and we are NOT struggling to find out who our starter at QB will be.

  209. d1shima June 15, 2011 4:27 pm

    Like YAC?

    Arrow routes…

  210. Old School Dave June 15, 2011 4:27 pm

My 2 cents on Tate Forcier: He’s been described as a prima donna, a head case, a disruptive element, according to people close to the UM program. As earlier mentioned, I’d hate to see what would happen if he comes here and isn’t named the starting QB – could be very disruptive to the team chemistry. If Forcier is really interested in going to a school close to home, then SDSU, UNLV, Arizona or Fresno State would be the perfect fit. Don’t forget that even California kids have been known to suffer from homesickness when they take that 2500 mile plane ride to Hawaii.

  212. Guy in the office June 15, 2011 4:30 pm

For what it’s worth: College football analyst just told 1420 that he wouldn’t put much credence into Forcier reaching out to UH because it’s one of many schools on his shopping list. I think he also said Forcier was regarded as “a punk” and said after his freshman season he became what everyone around Ann Arbor called a “prima donna.” He said he wouldn’t want to see Forcier come to UH, which he said appeared to have good chemistry and a good on-field leader in Moniz. That’s enough for me.

  213. shorebreak June 15, 2011 4:30 pm

Forcier would he consider a change in position? He can scramble and run,is elusive, I’m thinking slot back, his passing stats according to the star/ad articule ,touchdown to int ratio not so good, almost one to one. If he comes great but beyond his college career will he be suited for the next level at qb? Our draft picks recently have been from the receiver positions, from what I saw he would be a great slot.

  214. Kazz June 15, 2011 4:31 pm

If Forcier comes, doesn’t play, gets all “da kine”.

I’m SURE some team leaders, some local braddahs, will um… give him some “help”.

  216. d1shima June 15, 2011 4:40 pm

  217. warriorsun June 15, 2011 4:40 pm

slugger sounds like the syracuse university official that put the nix on recruiting colt bc it would be a bad reflection on his institution.

brennan didnt go to a smaller school, he went to saddleback JC. it was in his neighborhood.

look, we have had worst qbs who have commited far more egregious acts. how quick we forget the transgressions of our current starter. there were more bad boys–coaches just kept a tight-lid on it and hoped for the best. mac handled TG and he managed the moniz affair well. it doesnt always work out well but when it does, a coach feels proud. mac is good at this kind of thing. if he pursues tate forcier, mac has first-hand knowledge. it appears forcier has passed mac’s vetting, otherwise he wouldnt allow ST to release the article. if tate wants hawaii, it’s a windfall for our warrior program.

  218. d1shima June 15, 2011 4:44 pm

  219. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 4:50 pm

Moniz? I don’t know what you are talking about.

    What did he do wrong?

  220. Derek June 15, 2011 4:50 pm

It goes without saying that the first prerequisite in recruiting football players is atheltic ability to play Division I football. After that, the most important things are the players heart to want to represent the State of Hawaii and if they are team players. The character and the heart in a lot of cases depends how successful a team is. I like the fact that Coach Mack said that this upcoming UH football team is in his opinion the fastest and the smartest team we’ve ever had. I hope he’s right. Team chemistry is very underrated. You want to have a very smart football team. Boise State has proved it many, many years. They don’t have 4 or 5 star players, they have some 3 star rated players, but their coaching is first rate and the players they have execute very well. They don’t make stupid penalties and they are very disciplined. I think our football team can learn from them a lot.

  221. warriorsun June 15, 2011 4:52 pm

#214, apperently the “analysist” you speak about doesnt know what he is talking about.

a forcier transfer would dictate a redshirt year from the san diego prepster making competition between forcier and moniz, a senior, a moot discussion for old ladies at the crusader lounge. the rest of your anecdotal quotes are heresay dribble. look, if tate wants to play on sundays, hawaii is the #1 passing team in the country and in 2012 we have the horses to catch n run. i rest my case.

  222. d1shima June 15, 2011 4:55 pm

Would Tate Forcier be a good fit for Hawaii in 2012?

Phil Steele: I like what Tate did at time for Michigan and any QB would put up big numbers in that offense. If he swallows his ego he would be solid.

  223. Curt June 15, 2011 4:55 pm

All interesting regarding Forcier. Last night before ST made the announcement, I speculated that if Forcier was the Sleeper, he probably wouldn’t be coming here. He was checking out many schools, was wishy washy on his commitment to Miami, had issues (academic and otherwise), and might react poorly if he didn’t start. I still hold that opinion that he’s not likely to play here. Even if he commits, he’s likely to change his mind…again.

  224. bigislandkurt June 15, 2011 4:57 pm

We’d be crazy to not welcome Tate Forcier. CRAZY.

Re: 223. Didn’t mean to make you huhu. I was just sharing what I heard. When the analyst referred to Moniz as a leader, he based it on his observation from last season and that he couldn’t see Forcier commanding that same level of on-field respect because of his rocky past. I think we’re all getting ahead of ourselves. If you read today’s story, there were no comments from Forcier or McMackin and the headline that says he “wants to be a Warrior” … well, he also WANTS to be an Aztec, a Trojan, a Bulldog …. etc. We’ll leave it to McMackin to do the due diligence; he’s aware of the baggage that MIGHT come with Forcier and wouldn’t take a chance on him until he’s convinced most of Forcier’s troubles are indeed hearsay drivel as you said. Let’s see where this story goes; Stephen probably already has a follow up for tomorrow.

  229. Curt June 15, 2011 5:17 pm

I am a real estate analyst and I have these great properties up in Detroit..great rental properties will get you about $3000 a month for a $50,000 per house investment.

I think you like money. I think you like making a lot of money.

Hope this is enough to convince you. You don’t really need to see the properties or the area do you?

When can you have the check ready for me?

  232. warriorsun June 15, 2011 5:20 pm

#230, agree, we are all speaking in hypothetical context, but still, dont place much stock in the analyst u heard. it’s hearsay unless, forcier commited a ncaa violation or broke a law, the bad rap u speak, is just that–bad rap! ps im not huhu, just attempting to stabilize wildfire rumors and sort it out. thankz for your contribution.

  233. Guy in the office June 15, 2011 5:24 pm

warriorsun: Thanks, and I hear what you’re saying, too. Just gotta be patient and see what develops and trust the coaches. Stephen sitting back and enjoying all the comments pouring in; sure helps fill the time until training camp opens.

  234. Old School Dave June 15, 2011 5:25 pm

Does UH want to be always be known as a “second chance university” that takes in players that other schools won’t? I recall the national press focusing on this as recently as the 2007 season.

During the 70s UH was an independent that NCAA didn’t require transfers to redshirt. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry at major schools who flunked out, ran into trouble, got beaten out of a job, or who had disciplinary issues seemed to end up at UH. Opposing coaches would joke that they didn’t need to scout UH, instead, just check out who transferred there (by reading Street & Smith mag). When UH joined the WAC, all transfers had to sit out according to NCAA rules, but players with “baggage” continued to transfer to UH from schools such as UCLA, Oregon, USC, etc. Some worked out, others didn’t. When June Jones took over from Fred von Appen, the talent level was so low and no one in his right mind would consider UH. So Jones had to take in a number of damaged goods players with troubled pasts in order to boost the talent level and to help make UH competitive.

The question is has the UH football program under Mac evolved to the point of where it doesn’t have to consider players with “questionable” backgrounds in a quest to win at all costs?

Of course all of this could be a moot point tomorrow when I wake up and read that Forcier has signed and is coming to UH.

Had a great 25th Wedding Anniversary today and tonite

Sealed domestic peace with a silver rose and a simple hand made card with no cliches

An expensive lunch at the Balboa Bay Club helped also.

i respect phil steele, but his recent pick to favor idaho against hawaii on the road by 5–has left me doubting my favorite pundit.

further, passing in the hawaii program is not about ego. its about throwing the ball 1,000 times a day, learning to read defenses in a nano-look and becoming a field leader. it requires as much IQ as it does athletic gift. move the stick, cross the goal and repeat 7-9 times per game. that is a hawaii QB. ego? u gotta be a narcissistic weiner.

  238. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 5:34 pm

    Slugger 204,

thats fine, i respect your opinion but i don’t agree with it. i have no problem with someone who set up a website to display who he got offers from or displaying, talking up, pitching how awesome he is.

last time i checked there is an industry worth billions if not trillions of dollars called Marketing that can basically hype up anything that exists for good or bad.

You say “lacks humility”, I say he is putting himself out there for the world to see. Should he not in this ultra competitive world?

Regarding his academics, thats the only area I kinda agree with you on. I don’t know how that will factor into the process and whether or not Hawaii will be kinder to him in that area. UH vs. UM is there a difference in academics?

Oh and didn’t Moniz have some rather “RECENT” issues as well that we the public will never know about….however it was corrected and he’s our man now.

  239. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 5:41 pm

    #219,

I’m not going to speak for her, but I would be willing to bet my house on the fact that if she says has some solid reasoning behind it from past professional work etc.

I can also tell you she is a bigger more devout UH fan than I am or ever will be pobably and in most cases I would defer to her knowledge of several football topics.

  240. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 5:44 pm

    #236,

Also another point worth considering is that Mack is not JJ.

They may both have different personalities and focuses on “2nd chance kids.”

As Al pointed out…maybe thats one of the reasons we said no to Masoli.

Some coaches just wont touch a kid with baggage no matter how good of a footballer he is…Mack could be that kind of guy.

I think you will appreciate this video on Urban Meyer…IMO he is like the SEC version of Petersen.

His intensity, his focus on discipline, you can just see he reeks of perfection.

  243. tommui June 15, 2011 5:59 pm

The debate so far has been interesting.

I don’t know the factual basis behind the controversy re: Forcier.

I am assuming that Coach Mac has done his homework and leave it to his judgment.

  244. Da Punchbowl Kid June 15, 2011 6:01 pm

Excellent link, BIK! Folks take a listen to the link in BIK’s #228.

Forcier comes off as very sincere. Judge for yourself.

In the meantime, its all speculation. Forcier sounds like he’s learned a lot and is ready to learn more. You can’t ask for more than that.

If can, can. If no can, no can.

    Nuff said.

  245. haka June 15, 2011 6:35 pm

I think all this talk about Forcier is an injustice to our present and committed QB’s. Many a “4 star” athlete gets beat out by lesser “rated” players and even walk-ons. And we all know how skewed the rating systems can be. He has great upside and potential downside. He is NOT the holy grail. The coaches, nor the team, will not be fooled.

Moniz is better than he is by far in my opinion and a couple of others we have in line to the position are projected to be very good. Adding quality is good, but the team comes first and there is no “I” in TEAM!

  246. jm2375 June 15, 2011 6:46 pm

Congratulations to Keiki Carlos, future UH softball pitcher!!

MID-PACIFIC INSTITUTE STANDOUT NAMED GATORADE® HAWAII SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR! In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Keiki Carlos of Mid-Pacific Institute as its 2010-11 Gatorade Hawaii Softball Player of the Year. Carlos is the first Gatorade Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Mid-Pacific Institute.

  247. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 6:48 pm

    #247,

I don’t think it does an injustice to anyone to consider new talent. Lou Holtz would say all living things are either living or they are dying. We should always be looking out for the next best thing…Being content while nice can be a dangerous thing.

When something like this presents itself it is for the coaches to make the call on whether or not its worth the time and to ultimately invest in it.

If he were to come in and get beat out by Nielsen, great. If he were to beat out everyone on our roster, great.

Ratings system and those “hard numbers” can be deceiving. Even Urban Meyer who started his career looking at the hard stats has come to realize that there is more to a player than just whats on paper.

The kid has started and won football games (including the same Notre Dame that beat us up in the Hawaii Bowl) while our other QB’s have not. True, its because they never had a chance yet but he has quality game experience.

no I in team, but there is one in WIN. haha.

  249. el burro sabio June 15, 2011 6:59 pm

ST must be having fun with this. He writes a story about an event that (IMHO) isn’t likely to happen, admits that he has no idea if Mac is interested, and sits back and watches the hits on his blog climb ;).

I do think that bringing in any junior in 2012 (meaning 4 junior QBs that season), might not be a good use of a scholarship unless 2 of them either changes position or leaves.

    Interesting blog today. My thoughts:

As far as I know, Forcier has not been charged with a crime. That is already one HUGE point in his favor vs. Colt, Davone and Pisa.

Was/is he arrogant or cocky or immature? Apparently so, but he’s getting his comeuppance right now, isn’t he? When people are forced to realize that their unko does indeed stink, they either reassess/regroup and come back stronger or they fade away. Based upon the most recent police incident, it seems like Tate is in the middle of that process right now. Don’t know how he’ll come out of it, but if he comes out well, then he just may be the “holy grail”.

Also, if Forcier joins up, he will be a red shirt and a walk on. He’ll be forced to sit a year to await his chance at redemption on the field. He’ll have to use that year to get his head straight and his grades in order. If he really isn’t ready, he won’t make it through that year. IF his character is lacking as people have suggested, he’ll be gone in a month.

Finally, even if Tate is King Jerk, I seriously doubt he would ever do something as potentially divisive as our present QB is rumored to have done.

Let Mack and Rolo do their due diligence. If they say they’re willing to give him a shot, that’s good enough for me.

  252. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 7:10 pm

On Da Animals show they said that the brother of Forcier twittered that neither Tate nor UH have had formal contact with each other.

Based on everything I’ve read about Forcier, its not difficult to figure out that he’s a serious headcase. Besides, we already have a QB in Shutter who has shown that he can go head to head with these “elite” QBs and beat them.

    #258,

Gotta compare apples to apples here.

Imo, one cannot compare Cayman to someone who has played and won college games against BCS schools, or just plain any college game. Not fair to either of them.

Only one QB we have has gone up against Div 1 teams and beat them. Our champ Moniz. And since he wont be a factor if/when Tate becomes eligible to play, wouldn’t be fair to compare which one is better.

  259. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 8:00 pm

I remember Moniz did something wrong and Mack kept him out of Spring practice in 2010.

    But that was last year.

When you mentioned it was RECENT, I thought you meant THIS YEAR.

  260. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 8:02 pm

Channel 2 had a report on Kaluka Maiava and what he’s doing to stay in shape in the off season. Nothing earth shattering here. I did think it was interesting to see that Maiava was working out at the UH weight room. Didn’t he have some not so flattering things to say about UH during his recruiting period when he was a senior at Baldwin High? On the other hand, that was a long time ago.

    http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2011/06/01/2041379/prep-softball-sehomes-wilkerson.html?storylink=addthis

It was clear by the number of intentional walks that Sehome senior Austin Wilkerson received during the season that she had earned the respect of Northwest Conference’s softball coaches.

On Wednesday, June 1, league coaches showed their respect in a different way, voting her the NWC’s Player of the Year. Wilkerson became the first player from Whatcom County in at least four seasons to take the top honor.

The University of Hawaii-bound catcher helped the Mariners to a 10-13 overall record and a win away from the Class 2A state tournament. Squalicum’s Rick Ellis was selected the coach of the year after helping the Storm to its first earned berth to the postseason in school history.

*Wilkerson is also capable of playing 3rd base.

    Congrats to Keiki Carlos!!! 😎

  268. Da Punchbowl Kid June 15, 2011 8:51 pm

    #247 –

Its true that we have a great starter in Moniz and several other top notch QBs in the wings. I doubt anyone could take Moniz’s job away next season.

If we engage in speculation about the ramifications of Forcier joining the Warriors, it doesn’t indicate a lack of faith in our current QB roster. We have some good ones here, right now.

However, a potential recruit like Forcier deserves serious consideration, and I’m sure the coaches have a handle on the situation. It will be their call ultimately.

If JJ hadn’t been willing to give kid a second chance, we would have missed the opportunity to change Warrior football forever. And we would have never had the blessing of a player like Colt Brennan.

It doesn’t hurt to keep options open.

  269. kalani June 15, 2011 8:56 pm

#260 That is exactly why I made that comparison. Since they will probably never play against each other or common opponents…the best apples to apples is to listen to what QB gurus such as Bob Johnson and others say about the QBs. If Bob Johnson’s opinion is that Shutter is as good or better than Jake Heaps who was the #1 ranked QB recruit in the country in 2010, that’s enough for me to feel pretty comfortable that were in pretty good shape with what we’ve got.

  270. Lava June 15, 2011 9:13 pm

Al, your preview of the UH offense is sobering. We lost a lot, but I just figured we’d reload. There will be some growing pains for sure.

David Rozitis played his freshman year at USC. He’ll be a Redshirt Soph. this coming season.

  272. AlaWai June 15, 2011 10:09 pm

UH is known for its walk-on success. Tate would be forced to sit till 2012. He’ll be a walk-on. Does any one think Mac would burn a scholie on him, without seeing his commitment.

Moniz wasn’t on a ride till late 2010. Colt and many others arrived in Manoa the same way. Hawaii could be the big break and “change” Tate needs to grow up.

  273. d1shima June 15, 2011 10:25 pm

    When would he be draft-eligible?

  274. el burro sabio June 15, 2011 10:27 pm

  275. WarriorMojo June 15, 2011 10:42 pm

    Re #266

Sorry, as far as I’m concerned, Kaluka burned his bridge. Why should he be allowed to work out at UH when he crapped all over our facilities? Get his ass out of there. He can work out at sc.

As far as I remember, access to the weight room is limited to UH students and employees. So in other words UH grads and donors are excluded and this guy is in? Why?

What next, jeremy perry getting rehab from our trainers?

  276. Slugger June 15, 2011 11:01 pm

    iwwthm,

#232 ~ you trying to sell someone a bridge? 🙂

  277. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 11:02 pm

    #271,

Ok if you are talking about when both were being recruited and did not enroll in college yet then fine, that is an apples to apples comparison.

If you are trying to compare the both of them TODAY, no way can you make an argument that Shutter is better than Tate. (or that Tate is better than Shutter)

How many games has Shutter played against a BCS team? Div 1 opponent? Div 2 opponent? College team? ZERO.

If you said he has the most potential out of any of the QB’s in the country then fine I can live with that. He MAY BE able to compete with any QB in the nation, but he HASN’T…so until he does its the same as this talk about Tate coming to UH…Speculation.

There is tons of talk that Andrew Luck is a franchise NFL caliber QB 1st round pick etc etc..has all the tangibles and intangibles blah blah blah…But I wouldn’t say he is better than any QB currently playing in the NFL until he plays a down in the NFL.

  278. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 11:03 pm

Hopefully Rolovich will have absorbed as much as he could from him if he decides not to return.

  288. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 11:27 pm

I want to bring up this twitter post again from Tate in which he denies contacting UH.

He has been open like a book about visiting and interested in schools like SJSU, SDSU, Montana, Auburn, Miami…

If he did send a letter and what not, why deny it when he has never denied the other rumors of his interests/visits?

I am unsure of the angle on this.

    http://twitter.com/#!/QBForce/status/81100187107471360

  289. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 15, 2011 11:34 pm

I am not versed in the NCAA rules and policies….Does a letter not officially mean “contacting” an institution? lol

  290. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 11:38 pm

Well, maybe ST’s “contacts” were wrong.

    or

Maybe, ST misinterpreted what his contacts told him.

  291. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 11:39 pm

    maybe there was no letter.

  293. al June 15, 2011 11:46 pm

jeremy higgins will have to sit out a year and since he hasn’t used it, he will redshirt 2011.

he will then have three years eligibility left.

  294. al June 15, 2011 11:48 pm

    or…perhaps mack denied forcier.

forcier then denies any interest in hawaii.

that is what many do to mask their disappointment and to save face.

  295. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 11:51 pm

makes you wonder why mack and rolo refused to comment to ST.

  296. al June 15, 2011 11:51 pm

i believe recruits are allowed to initiate contact/communication showing their interest in a particular program.

  299. al June 15, 2011 11:54 pm

they can’t comment, i believe the same recruiting rules apply whereby a coach may not comment until the appropriate dates or when a scholie agreement is made official.

  300. gigi-hawaii June 15, 2011 11:55 pm

Al, did you take your wife out to dinner tonight?

    BTW, happy anniversary!

  301. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 12:15 am

    #296,

I can buy that. Hawaii doesn’t have to “leak” that this high profile QB shown interest in our program.

The decision however has already been made that Tate won’t be given a chance and Tate denies it to save face.

Either way, UH will never need to comment further and Tate goes on his jolly way.

    Interesting

  302. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 12:16 am
