Governor helps Warriors

man2

There is a familiar UH alumnus serving a supervisory role during unsupervised football workouts this week.

“You know guys from Farrington like to help out,” said Vince Manuwai, a former Governor and Warrior lineman and now offensive guard for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Manuwai, who awaits the end of the lockout to begin his ninth NFL season, has offered tips to both offensive and defensive linemen. His message is the same one given to him (in a loud tone) from former UH line coach Mike Cavanaugh: Trust your technique.

“Don’t let the d-lineman change what you usually do,” Manuwai told the offensive linemen. “Keep your body nice and steady. Keep your eye on the target. Always trust your technique.”

Manuwai said he is impressed with right guard David Lefotu.

“I can’t believe he’s only a redshirt freshman,” Manuwai said. “He reminds me of a young Samson Satele. When he’s a sophomore, he’s going to be an all-star.”

I didn’t take photos of the passing drills because: 1) My camera died. 2) A marching band kicked off the players to practice on Ching field. The players had to go to the grass practice field. Unfortunately, the gate was locked and nobody had a key. So the players scaled the fence to work out.

    Fantastic! lol

I thought at first that the governor was Abercrombie.

ST, wouldn’t that have been hilarious?

    Abercrombie supervising the players? lol

  5. bigislandkurt July 8, 2011 6:53 am

When Tate becomes a Warrior — and WHEN he wins the starting QB job next year, we will need to find a way to get Graves on the field too.

    Great Morning All!

Cheerio! (dats for LTUHF and all the other Govs!)

  7. bigislandkurt July 8, 2011 6:57 am

Both Fa’aumu and Kani’s calves in those pictures look like tree stumps! They would give Travis Simms a run for his money! haaa

    Good morning Tsaiko friends.

    Kawika49 1st!! Chee hooo.

    BIK

  8. d1shima July 8, 2011 6:57 am

    Wow!

    Keep the pic posting going….

  9. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 6:57 am

    I wouldn’t count out Graves.

This will be his third year in the system, and he had a pretty good spring.

    Step up or step aside.

  10. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 7:10 am

    And then the camera died.

Apparently I inadvertently left it on all day, and the battery died.

  11. Old School Dave July 8, 2011 7:11 am

Mahalo to Vince Manuwai to share his knowledge with the Warrior linemen. Based on the pics, the linemen look like they’ve been working out hard over the summer. Gone are the days when you came to summer camp to “get into shape”. Try that today, and you’ll find yourself buried on the depth chart, injured, or doing extra conditioning/motivational drills to pay for your laziness.

  12. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 7:16 am

    Old School Dave:

After the official conditioning drills — in which weight room staffers are allowed to lead — Tommy Heffernan gave what I would term a frightening pep talk.

    Inspiring, yes.

But if you’re a slacker, frightening.

There are too sides to Tommy. The caring father and the intense coach who does not tolerate absences or slacking.

Apparently there were workouts beginning at 6 a.m. today on campus. I’ll accept photos and reports.

  16. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 7:23 am

Brashton Satele is working out at UH right now.

  17. d1shima July 8, 2011 7:23 am

…the occasional photo of an OT locking up a DE would be nice (if not reassuring)

  18. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 7:26 am

ST, you should buy a spare battery for your camera.

When one battery dies, you can slip in the other one.

Jumping back posts for a moment:

Urban dictionary definition of internet troll

A person whose sole purpose in life is to seek out people to argue with on the internet over extremely trivial issues. Such arguments can happen on blogs, Facebook, Myspace and a host of others.

I don’t think IWWTHM fits that description.

Also, Steve Murray’s take on the QB recruit:

    Fence too high.

    Gap in gate too small.

  23. d1shima July 8, 2011 7:39 am

Yeah, he mentioned that he is a UM fan on FB…so “grain of salt” and all that.

  24. tom mui July 8, 2011 7:40 am

The news that Ohio State will “vacate” its victories last season reminds me of the guy accused of stealing chickens.

When he got found not guilty, he asked the judge “Can I keep the chickens?”

OSU should get the same punishment as USC – if not more so.

And with that, GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And I am sorry I did not get a chance to say hello to IWWTHM the other night.

  25. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 7:40 am

d1, that might explain why ST did not scale the fence.

  26. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 7:43 am

I think there can be a difference between how a person is perceived publicly and how he acts away from the spotlight.

There are many people I’ve come across in sports, entertainment and the media who aren’t how they appear.

Not sure why one person should be scrutinized more than others. We all live in glass houses.

  27. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 7:47 am

I could scale the fence. I’m just not going to do it for a blog entry.

My new philosophy is along the lines of in-person chats. I invite readers to do it.

  28. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 7:51 am

Scaling the fence — not for non-athletes.

    I don’t think I could do it.

  29. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 7:53 am

It’s too bad Forcier is such a controversial character.

Let’s all give him a second chance.

  30. d1shima July 8, 2011 7:57 am

    Certainly NOT with a muumuu!

  31. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 7:58 am

    d1, das why!

  32. d1shima July 8, 2011 7:59 am

    So muumuu are for non-athletes?

  33. Pomai July 8, 2011 8:01 am

You should have asked the players to help you scale the fence, I’m sure they would have given you a hand. LOL

  34. A-joe July 8, 2011 8:03 am

Scaling fences in muumuu should be an Olympic sport!

  35. Pauoa Boy July 8, 2011 8:04 am

I hope Lefotu does become the next bad arse offensive lineman to dominate the trenches. He definitely looks the type of a mauling type offensive guard, just like Vince.

Amadi looks like a workout freak…that can only mean good things on the football field. Hope he shows the Promise that we are all anticipating on the football field.

Seems like Masch got bigger too, hope these guys are ready to ground and pound this year. Can we run the table again…yessah we can!

My take on Forcier is that if this guy is legit and can embrace the Warrior Ohana and earn his keep, then by all means welcome him with open arms. It’ll be tough competition at the QB position, with what we have on the table already but I’m still high on Graves. Regardless, Coach plans on recruiting two more QB’s a JC and a frosh??? I think Nielsen is a long shot for any PT, so maybe he should change positions… Alo not joining until later could be a blessing in disguise for him as he can get stronger and gain more knowledge of the offense. With what we have going, I could see Graves, Shutter, and Higgins being the 3 deep next year…

  36. LizKauai -iPad July 8, 2011 8:04 am

#26- big difference. A lot of east coasters struggled to understand what kind of player Colt was when he hit the Redskins. And, like all of us, judged him through personal pov-colored glasses.

I trust the coaches to see the qualities they want in a player, regardless of hype.

  37. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 8:04 am

d1, you should go to T&L Muumuu Factory and buy yourself a couple of muumuus.

Very comfortable for people with wide girths. lol

  38. Pauoa Boy July 8, 2011 8:09 am

Also, not sure if any of you have been to Manoa gym watching the summer league games, but Shaq Stokes is killing it and showcasing what he has in store for this upcoming season. He is quickly becoming my favorite player on the mens basketball team and I’m sure will be a fan favorite very soon. The guy is a talent, attacks relentlessly, can shoot, defend, etc… Coach Gib will have a fun time with these guys this year and is it too soon to guarantee some March Madness love? Any, back to regular football programming…

  39. d1shima July 8, 2011 8:10 am

I could retort with a comment like, “You should go to T & A and buy yourself a coupla….” But, nah! 😈

  40. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 8:14 am

Well, I bought FIVE muus from there just 2 weeks ago.

  41. A-joe July 8, 2011 8:16 am

  44. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 8:19 am

I wonder if UH is going to make a Heisman video of Moniz like the one they did for Colt.

Actually, it was Kekaula who made the dvd. Awesome.

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 8:19 am

    Good Morning Gangees! 🙂

  47. Pride. July 8, 2011 8:23 am

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 8:24 am

Love the pics, Mr. Tsai. Keep ’em coming!

Coach Mack says there is a lot of young talent on the team. You can see that in the pics. If the QB1 after Moniz can step up and deliver, we’ll be looking at another couple of good years.

  49. Pomai July 8, 2011 8:25 am

“I can’t believe he’s only a redshirt freshman,” Manuwai said. “He reminds me of a young Samson Satele. When he’s a sophomore, he’s going to be an all-star.”

Met Vince when he was a sophmore at Farrington. Told his dad that he reminded me of a young Jesse Sapolu, when Jesse Sapolu was a freshman in college. Now Vince reminds me of Vince Manuwai, from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

  55. Pride. July 8, 2011 8:33 am

Young newcomers coming in looking like they already have a few good years of weight training under their belts. Very impressive.

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 8:33 am

    Hey Pomai. How you?

  57. Kevin July 8, 2011 8:35 am

    Pauoa Boy,

NCAA Summer League out at Manoa District Park is good fun for sure. Good basketball for free!!!

Haven’t been this past week and I missed out since the UH guys and the newbies are back. Only went the prior weekend.

  62. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 8, 2011 8:46 am

Great to see Manuwai on campus helping out the team!

Did he physically engage with the players or just give pointers? I would think he is quite the imposing figure for our D-line to being going 1-1 with.

  63. Kekoa July 8, 2011 9:03 am

Shout out to the Big Island Tsai-ko’s!

Kawika49 tops the WB today, and BIK chimes in with his support of a QB candidate seeking acceptance.

    Aloha Friday Sports Fans!

  64. Hawnstln July 8, 2011 9:15 am

Whooooaaaa – St when you said ‘Governor’, I thought you meant Abercrombie. I was excited for a second – thought he had turned over a new leaf and decided to support the team! Well. maybe when it is more politically correct!!

  65. Slugger July 8, 2011 9:21 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Thanks for the pictures, ST!

  66. RedZone July 8, 2011 9:21 am

To have a winning team you got to have at least one Governor on the team. And we got one coming in soon.

I don’t know about a second chance for Forcier. It seems more like a last chance to me. It is really up to him. I hope he succeeds. I hate seeing such talented players falling due to head issues.

  67. Kevin July 8, 2011 9:38 am

Congrats to young Abe M for being recognized as an Academic Student Athlete. Making the Honor Roll after a preseason injury last year was a real challenge. Looking forward to this Tsaiko son having a great 2011 fb season!

  69. madeinhawaii July 8, 2011 9:47 am

Whoa.. no one on that list is from Men’s Football, eh?

  70. Kevin July 8, 2011 9:52 am

Per the top paragraph in my post:

*THE WAC ACADEMIC LIST INVOLVES SPRING SPORTS*

BUT I don’t know why volleyball is in there since they start, play and finish their season all in the fall. Basketball goes THRU into the spring from the fall so that I can see.

  71. madeinhawaii July 8, 2011 9:56 am

I thought that statement meant that it also includes Spring Sports… along with all the past semester sports.

  72. madeinhawaii July 8, 2011 9:57 am

But I think you’re right, there’s no Women’s Soccer in there.

  73. mctruck July 8, 2011 10:00 am

Don’t any of these UH fb-players ever get hurt climbing over da fence??, or do those who get injured and just suck it up because they don’t want to be seen as weak/fragile?

Actually, how many years have gone by, and still “NO-Keys.” How does this look to the newbies???….or is this practice for future NFL players, incase of another, LOCKOUT?!

    ST,

I remember that Jason won the Colt for Heisman DVD at the 1st WB anniversary party.

He was so thrilled, and lots of guys would have been happy to own it.

In the meantime, JD showed it on the big screen at the party.

    Kekaula did an awesome job.

  77. al July 8, 2011 10:12 am

dpk…tsk, tsk. no wonder your diet program is on “holding”. you better be nice, else wise i could send this picture to a certain “sweetie”.

  78. al July 8, 2011 10:15 am

funny thing…at the chat i was going to jokingly ask mack what kind of support the governor was lending these days.

more funny is that the governor while campaigning did mention often how he would be an athletic supporter and that he’d return the stadium to the university. i guess he was refering to the other kind of athletic supporter.

  79. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 10:18 am

    CSboy,

that looks awesome. Maybe I’ll order that when I go to your shop.

  80. al July 8, 2011 10:18 am

pauoa boy…i was gonna mention also about how the new guys are coming in pretty ripped. edu amadi, only a hs recruit looks mature physically as one of our seniors.

i see now why the coaches are very high on this kid to challenge immediately for pt.

  81. koakane July 8, 2011 10:18 am

    morning warrior nation

IMHO most over looked is the attitudes and examples setting the tone for the incoming freshman on what it takes to put on the green and be called a warrior.

  82. Kevin July 8, 2011 10:19 am

    Made,

Yeah the list is kinda funny. I don’t even see why they felt the need to separate the freshmen and transfers from the others.

But there was a list put out by the WAC for ALL WAC Academic after the fall and we had a lot of our Warriors on there and again women’s volleyball and I remember seeing the Wahine soccer players on there too.

  83. al July 8, 2011 10:20 am

good to see manuwai giving back. this is huge.

wouldn’t it be nice to see more former players volunteering their expertise during the off season workouts?

i guess mack would have to embrace that first.

  84. al July 8, 2011 10:21 am

    yao is pau.

maybe he could help us out on the asia tour.

  85. Darren July 8, 2011 10:23 am

Of course there’s some errors and omissions (like where’s Brenden Daley and who’s Aaron Dunnachie), but a pretty good writeup from ESPN on the team.

    ST,

I remember that Jason won the Colt for Heisman DVD at the 1st WB anniversary party.

He was so thrilled, and lots of guys would have been happy to own it.

In the meantime, JD showed it on the big screen at the party.

    Kekaula did an awesome job.

    Still have that DVD. 🙂

  95. Laura July 8, 2011 10:44 am

Was I the only one bothered by people calling Ji Xiang “Yao”?

If that’s supposed to be a “nickname” kinda lazy yeah?

Oh he’s from China, tall, and plays basketball so must be like Yao Ming yeah? C’MON!!!!

  98. Kevin July 8, 2011 10:52 am

  107. Kevin July 8, 2011 10:59 am

    AH! The REAL Yao Ming.

Ok, but still people did call Ji Xiang ‘Yao’, especially some chants in the arena which was pretty stupid.

  108. Kevin July 8, 2011 11:00 am

I cannot get up early enough, das y set up ‘traps’.

  109. al July 8, 2011 11:08 am

On another hand, much mahalos to the “V man” for helping out our players and sharing his experience.

Amadi looks like he would be a real good boxer — long arms, wide back.

Tsai — So how does Jared Leaf look? He’s the one I am highest on regarding our incoming freshmen.

    Aloha Kekoa!

    BIK

  126. jeezy33 July 8, 2011 12:43 pm

my prediction is amadi will be next big super star on offense

  127. A-House July 8, 2011 12:46 pm

    d1 #89:

UH had problems “booking” the team from Hawaii to LV – no more or limited space on Hawaiian.

They waited to long to make that decision – does that mean that many locals will be flying in to Vegas?

  128. A-House July 8, 2011 12:48 pm

    al:

did U accept my challenge that a certain WR who committed to USC will never sign with UH?

we can discuss this over lunch!

  129. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 1:05 pm

Okayyyyy… Had the shake and the ‘dog at Petals and Beans. One word: Awesome!

Cross that one off the bucket list and mark it as a must repeat, next time with Sweety.

Thanks to Dennis for a superb breakfast, very reasonably priced. If any o’ youz Tsaikos haven’t been, get your bad selves down to PnB. The place is beautiful, Mrs. Chopsueyboy is beautifuler and they have some cool stuffs on sale.

For those spreading gossip and scoldings, thank you. Went for a walk around Ala Moana Park and Ala Wai Promenade right afterwards. I know, you don’t believe me. Ask Kainoa McGee surfer and lifeguard extraordinaire. Talked story and watched a surf meet with him for a couple of minutes. South shore had nice sets today.

  130. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 1:12 pm

Coach Mac was saying how impressed he is with the physiques on some of the newbies, Amadi incuded. He also mentioned Joey Iosefa as being a real specimen too.

It may take our offense a little time to synch up with game reps, but once they do, they will be as good as any we’ve had.

Much credit to Coach Tommy for “loading the guns” on the Warriors. Bigger stronger and faster starts with him.

  131. warriorsun July 8, 2011 1:17 pm

had lunch with two warrior DLM today, glad I didnt pick-up the tab. these guys eat with short memory. but alas, they are itching to start camp and have the buffs circled on their ipods.

  132. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 1:19 pm

    #90 and #110 –

I took half the Katsu home to my better half and only ate half of my rice. My dining partner was the one breaking the world’s katsu and rice eating speed contest. I tried to have a converstion with him, but all he had to say was “Umnumnumnumm, gluggluglug umnumnumnum.” 😆

  133. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 1:21 pm

“My dining partner at Genji’s” I should say…

  136. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 1:30 pm

    Love Subway.

I ordered a meatball marinara sandwich, and they ask me: Do you want mayo or mustard?

  137. al July 8, 2011 1:33 pm

ahouse…a challenge or a bet should be one where it is as close to going 50:50.

say for example, the nba championships.

the challenge should be that if he does come to the very deep south, then you owe me as the odds of him coming are closer to 50:1 as it is to being 50:50.

but, there is a chance and as long as there is a chance there is hope.

however, tell me when you are available for lunch?

  138. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 1:34 pm

    warriorsun:

I think what’s fueling some of the coaches is they weren’t invited to the All-Poly camp. Yet, Colorado and Washington coaches were.

And it was held at a state facility (McKinley High).

    Happy Aloha Friday!

    Welcome to the new Warriors!

ST – how come your new camera doesn’t automatically turn off after a certain amount of time?

    Hiho. Class reunion tonight.

  141. Darren July 8, 2011 1:36 pm

How could a Hawaii coach not be invited to the All-Poly camp that was held in Hawaii??? Weren’t there a whole slew of coaches there?

  142. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 1:37 pm

    Jeezy33:

Amadi does indeed look like a football player.

I was impressed that Cofer was in such great shape.

Another player who might be a sleeper is Trevor Davis.

  143. al July 8, 2011 1:37 pm

being a long time patron of the local drive inns…it always amused me that some of favorites stay as local as possible.

back in the day a local place would serve spaghetti and meat sauce with rice, macaroni salad, and garlic bread or a roll. i think they still do.

maybe that’s why the athletes gather there for their carbo loading.

  145. al July 8, 2011 1:38 pm

  146. Darren July 8, 2011 1:38 pm

Would prefer to have a backup receiver as our starting punt returner instead of a starting corner. Guarantee hands and less risk for what’s usually a choppy reward scenario. The corner would have to be a really special returner to make the risk/reward worth it (Mouton-like). Can’t get the sight of Kealoha going down out of my mind yet…

  147. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 1:39 pm

    Darren:

Yep. Sarkisian and Cabral were there.

  148. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 1:39 pm

I think there’s a combine going on on the mainland now.

A bunch of the Punahou guys are there.

  149. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 1:40 pm

why wouldn’t you want mayo on a meatball marinara sandwich?

    I would.

    Otherwise the bun stay dry.

  150. al July 8, 2011 1:41 pm

so who were the organizers of the all-poly camp?

  152. A-House July 8, 2011 1:45 pm

Hawaii all-poly camp – was it a way to “ice out” UH inasmuch as Colorado and Washington do a lot of recruting here?

  153. al July 8, 2011 1:47 pm

no its not a fair wager.

perhaps if you win i’ll buy you lunch.

if i win, which the odds are clearly stacked up against me, you buy me ten lunches.

but, yah we could do lunch. may i invite some friends?

you pick the date or you ask d1 when he is off(cuz he’ll suggest anyway)

  154. Derek July 8, 2011 1:47 pm

I have a feeling that Joey Iosefa will be a bull of a running back, breaking tackles, and punishing the linebackers and DBs. I just hope that he doesn’t lose the football and fumble. Ball security is #1.

thats pretty messed up that uh coaches were not invited to all poly. alema te’o runs it right?

theres UO camp right now, The Opening sponsored by Nike. all the top prospects are there.

    warriorsun, email me?

  160. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 2:06 pm

    Derek –

Coach Mack describes Iosefa, a former QB/Safety as being 6’1″, 250 pounds and very athletic. By all reports, this group of RBs is very deep and extremely talented. Size, power and speed in abundance. The big question is how quickly they can master the blocking schemes and catch passes out of the backfield.

According to Mack, thanks to his playing in the Warriors’ RnS scheme, the great Alex Green was the best RB in the NFL draft in all three areas, rushing, blocking and recieving.

  161. Kevin July 8, 2011 2:13 pm

All Poly Camp is a Nike sponsored thing right?

UW is a Nike school. Colorado is a Nike school.

  162. Kevin July 8, 2011 2:24 pm

    ST,

So, is the AllPolyCamp invite black and white? Black and white in the sense that if you are not invited, “sorry, don’t bother asking”?

  163. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 2:27 pm

    Kevin:

If you’re not invited, you can’t attend as a spectator.

As I understand it, a couple of UH coaches had heard they were going to be on a panel. But no invitations were extended. From what I was told.

  164. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 2:28 pm

    DPK:

Mack did say 250, but I think Iosefa is 235.

  165. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 2:29 pm

  166. d1shima July 8, 2011 2:35 pm

  172. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2011 2:38 pm

Of course, you have to wonder about the camp’s intent: Is it to teach or to showcase talent?

    Stephen –

You’re prolly right about Iosefa’s weight. I thought it was 250… in any case, he’s big dude with great power and is light on his feet. Can’t “weight” to see him and the other RBs in action.

  185. al July 8, 2011 2:55 pm

…and maybe one south beach transfer by way of ann arbor.

add to all that the other transfers like higgins and mataigiese.

  186. d1shima July 8, 2011 2:56 pm

Doesn’t seem to be much coaching going on at the All-Poly Camp. At least it’s not evident from all the “highlight video”

Players scrimmaging, others standing on one sideline. Staff behind the line of scrimmage seems to be in “evaluation mode”

  187. dennis halloran July 8, 2011 2:57 pm

Chad Owens has been the whole story by the announcers in Winnipeg tonite on ESPN 3

He mishandled a couple of punts and caught a 1st down pass

AOK so far in a low scoring CFL game at half

  188. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 8, 2011 2:58 pm

  190. al July 8, 2011 3:02 pm

  194. al July 8, 2011 3:07 pm

looking ahead…we have 27 seniors on this year’s edition of the warriors of manoa.

this class is loaded with talent and leaders.

inspite of our rebuilding on offense, i think we’ll win 11-12 games this year. we’ll need to come out of the first three games at 2-1 and just get better each week.

  195. Kevin July 8, 2011 3:08 pm

  207. Kevin July 8, 2011 3:33 pm

    D1,

Coach Mack is right on so many levels with regards to that specific topic.

Coach Mack isn’t the only head coach dealing with that though. Go to the arena or the Les and people still walk in whenever the hell they want.

You’d think that for football people would WISE UP and get off their asses and get in for the team running out at least, but they cannot even do that.

DO WE HAVE TO OFFER FREE TRIPS TO VEGAS EVERY GAME TO GET HAWAII PEOPLE TO DO SOMETHING???????????????????

    ————–

On a side note, Coach Mack did say that he was told that the stadium opens the gates only one hour before the game. This cannot be true is it? Unless something changed recently.

Back when games were at 6pm, the gates for people to actually enter and take their seat opened at 3pm. THREE HOURS BEFORE HAND. I only assumed it was the same practice when the games moved back to 5pm and the gates opened at 2pm. AGAIN, unless something changed.

The last time I saw people pack that place in time for the team to run out to a loud crowd was against BSU. Look at what it took to make that happen. Need I say more?

Sure, UH can market the crap out of it, but Hawaii people are set in their ways. I’m 28 and I know the truth. Born here, live here, and I want to die here. Look deep down people, it is what it is.

Now, UH marketing and whatnot should not be left off the hook on this and they SHOULD try, hell prove my theory wrong. They did it once with the “GREEN and WHITE RULE THE NIGHT” promotion in 2009. Never in a MILLION years did I think you’d get local people to participate in that without a FREE TRIP TO VEGAS on the line, but they did. Granted 65% did and it was just enough to make a visual difference, but more than half is a victory for us.

  208. Kevin July 8, 2011 3:35 pm

But they should keep doing the haka pregame either way. If they like it and it gets them in the right frame of mind, then keep doing it.

  209. Kevin July 8, 2011 3:41 pm

Flat out, everyone that frequents here and maybe even the lurkers here that agree with out philisophy of participating in a real college atmosphere are in the minority.

    Always have been.

In that, I LIKE my “high horse”.

When the flood waters come, I won’t be the one begging to be saved.

  210. GoodLookingPake July 8, 2011 3:43 pm

    2-WOODARD

DID NOT SEE AL LIST THEM…

    JUST LURKING!!

  211. Kevin July 8, 2011 3:45 pm

In that, don’t feel bad about thinking you are a “better fan” than others. If that’s what you believe, then so be it.

Don’t feel bad that you think you are more dedicated or more respectful to our student-athletes and coaches. If you think you are then you are.

Be proud to know that unlike others, you will back up the programs you want to support because of what it represents to you. Coaches and student-athletes will always come and go, that’s college sports.

NO ONE IS OR HAS EVERY BEEN ABOVE THE BIGGER PICTURE.

    No SHAME people NO SHAME!

    Kaufusi – director (BYU)

    Uperesa – director (UNLV)

    Tuiasosopo – director (Arizona)

  221. madeinhawaii July 8, 2011 4:33 pm

An all Poly camp without a Hawaii representative as a director? AUWE! How can that be? I mean, where else in Polynesia do they play D1 football? DII? DIII? College football?

  222. cheepono July 8, 2011 4:33 pm

#221 haha thanks. hilo is small kine too far for me. i picked up 8 onos and 13 mahi off molokai last wkd. still on the lookout for my first ahi of the summer though.

  223. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 4:36 pm

    cheepono,

what in the world did you do with all that fish?

    sell them?

  224. cheepono July 8, 2011 4:38 pm

sell enough to cover the gas (which was 100 gallons of diesel that weekend) and share the rest with friends and family.

  225. Laura July 8, 2011 4:39 pm

Cheepono, you talking about the Penguin Banks, where you caught all your fish?

  226. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 4:40 pm

I don’t care much for mahi.

Like the Atlantic salmon filets sold by Costco.

    Expensive, but.

Think hubby pays around $28 for a bag of 7 filets.

  227. cheepono July 8, 2011 4:42 pm

#226 yup. with the exception of a couple more mahi outside kaneohe on the way back home.

  228. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 4:43 pm

This is how I cook my salmon filets–

Spray a ceramic dish with oil.

    Place the salmon inside.

Pour low sodium teriyaki sauce on top.

Sprinkle chopped green onions on top.

Bake for 16 min in 375 degree oven COVERED.

    YUMMY.

  229. cheepono July 8, 2011 4:43 pm

mahi is gold right now. the block was paying $8-8.50 per lbs last weekend.

  230. Garret July 8, 2011 4:44 pm

Looks like UT-Arlington is going to be added to the WAC…by the way, UT-Arlington doesn’t play football so they add another team to the eastern edge of the WAC without bringing another football team.

In a surprise follow-up to the recent addition of Seattle University, UT-Arlington is set to leave the Southland Conference for the Western Athletic Conference as a non-football member.

But Southland commissioner Tom Burnett said the move is a foregone conclusion pending approval by the UT Board of Regents next Thursday. Bobcatreport.com initially reported the agenda item.

“It pretty much spells it out, especially if you look in the details,” Burnett said. “It’s pretty conclusive. That’s what they’re asking for.”

Burnett said he has been told UT-Arlington will join the WAC for the 2012-13 season, along with fellow Southland members UTSA and Texas State.

    http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2011/07/ut-arlington-to-the-wac-pending-approval/

  231. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 4:46 pm

I hate to cook fish with skin on.

The skin prevents the sauce from soaking into the bottom of the fish.

So I always buy skinless fish.

  232. Laura July 8, 2011 4:47 pm

Cheepono, what kind boat you get? My cousin has a 26″ Saltwater. Went out with him a couple of times out of Kaneohe, too.

  233. cheepono July 8, 2011 4:57 pm

24 foot yellow fin. wow your cuzo has a NICE boat!

  234. madeinhawaii July 8, 2011 5:00 pm

    Laura,

26″?…. how many guys can fit in a 26-inch Saltwater boat?

  235. Laura July 8, 2011 5:03 pm

Cheepono, he takes it all over. He once took it from Hawaii Kai, to Molokai, to Maui, and ended up in Kona, would you believe. I thought he was crazy when he did that.

  236. Laura July 8, 2011 5:05 pm

MIH, 26 foot Saltwater, what do I know, I am not really into fishing. 🙂

  237. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2011 5:09 pm

I once sailed on a 27 foot sloop between islands.

    I was soooo seasick.

SteveM knows the story so I won’t repeat it.

    Let’s just say: NEVAH AGAIN!

  238. Laura July 8, 2011 5:14 pm

Gigi, I am with you. Need to have feet firmly on ground. If on water, nothing smaller then a cruise liner.

  239. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 8, 2011 5:21 pm

Good seeing Stevem, tommui, BG and Mrs.BG, papa-joe, lakesidegt today for lunch. Good food and great stories as I prepare to take that first cruise of my own.

What’s sad about the whole poly camp thing is that’s it’s run by Polynesians, involves polynesian kids but last time I checked Wershington (as Mack would say) and Colorado aren’t Polynesia’s Team…Hawaii is…With that being said Washington has a large Polynesian community and if they’re comin out to Hawaii to recruit Polynesian kids then maybe we should hit Washington and recruit their Polynesian base..

  242. Bryson July 8, 2011 5:31 pm

I would like to see UA sponsor a camp out here..and involve UA sponsored colleges…

  243. SteveM July 8, 2011 5:34 pm

ohhhh… polynesian paralysis. Worse, woke up and there’s no pool deck and ice cream bar to visit.

Now I tune in to picture gigi bobbing up and down and sideways while strapped to the stern rail. Yikes.

So…cheepeno, kawika49, and tunaluvr should get together for a Fishing Tournament. No, maybe better not…lots of water to cross in their boats to meet (Kauai, Oahu, Hawaii).

Laura — have you cruised (large Passenger ship) before? If so, see

    http://home.roadrunner.com/%7Esmurashi/tsai-kos/cruisers.html

  244. Garret July 8, 2011 5:41 pm

UT-Arlington doesn’t play football and they had a men’s basketball average attendance of 811 last season…welcome to the WAC.

I lived in Texas for 8 years and UT-Arlington was so far down in the pecking order that they were the equivalent of a few levels below UH-Hilo…

  245. homey ℞ July 8, 2011 5:48 pm

With all those pics ST posted and all this talk about being and getting in shape makes me motivated to get in tailgate shape. Then just for fun I’ll knock Kevin off his high horse. 😆

BTW, wasn’t there an incentive a while back to lose some weight before the season starts? I recall vaguely that I would lose 5#’s. I should meet that goal in a few months.

    Howzit everyone!

  246. d1shima July 8, 2011 5:49 pm

    Garret,

Garret, I can understand why adding UT Arlington to the WAC would be a head-scratcher for most folks, but they actually bring a lot of positives to the conference:

    – They’re the second-largest UT school with 34,000-plus students.

    – They’re a Carnegie high-research institution with good academics.

    – Although they don’t play football, their overall athletic program is solid. They’ve won the Southland Conference’s Commissioners Cup more times than any other conference team: three times since the award was first instituted in 1998. The Commissioners Cup is awarded to the athletics program with the highest all-around performance in all conference men’s and women’s sports.

    – Their basketball attendance and performance should improve with the opening of their brand-new 6,500-seat special events center this year.

    – They give the WAC a presence in the DFW market and a natural travel partner for LaTech.

    – They give the WAC the third non-football school it needs to establish a 9/12 conference model and set up east and west divisions for Olympic sports that will reduce travel costs. Now the hard part: finding two additional football schools to complete the puzzle.

Overall I think this is a smart move if the WAC can pull it off.

  270. warriorsun July 8, 2011 6:33 pm

I would agree with those who assign value to graves three year aprenticeship in the uh system. although his spring performance was anything but spectacular. if forcier is on board he will have to take the starting position away from graves, et al, and earn it. no one will lay down. especially david. if the match-up develops, it should be spirited and serve to better that position no matter who emerges on top. u can bet, our first two opponents in 2012, usc and byu, on game day, will be shouting across the scrim, “show me”….. no one is sacred until they win a big one on the road.

  271. HENIEKEN July 8, 2011 6:39 pm

The WAC is so messed up right now I would of been crying if we were still in it begging Comish Thompson

Thank GOD We were successful last year in football because a 6-7 repeat would of had us staying douchebag Benson

  272. HENIEKEN July 8, 2011 6:44 pm

the big west gotta be a Win Win for UH too i mean

The baseball programs will be seeing Cal Fullerton , Long Beach State

As for Basketball it should be easier to get to march madness and get exposed on CBS,TNT,TBS,TRU TV instead getting man handled by New Mexico and SDSU and the up and coming Boise State basketball program

AND BY THE WAY DID I MENTION IT WOULD SAVE MONEY INSTEAD OF FLYING TO RUSTON LOUISIANA

  279. Ralph July 8, 2011 7:17 pm

The three Texas schools joining the WAC are loaded with money, their websites show a lot of growth in facilities or pending facilities.

With a large student body and rabid sports fans, and a willingness to pay a student athletic fee, the Texans are headed in the right direction. In a few years they will be very competitive in all WAC sports.

  280. madeinhawaii July 8, 2011 7:19 pm

Say what you will about the WAC, it was and probably still is a good starting point for teams wanting to enter D1 sports.

Wouldn’t it be something if the 2 best Washington players play for Hawaii. Namely, Ellis Henderson and Kendrick Van Ackeren. I think these 2 guys will be big time by the time their careers are pau at Manoa.

Maybe Hawaii should have their own All-Poly Camp. Directors can be Jesse Sapolu, Vince Manuwai, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Inoke Funaki, Tala Esera, Leoard/Hyrun Peters, Falakino Noga, Blane Gaison, etc., etc. There is no shortage of coaches too.

  283. Kekoa July 8, 2011 7:29 pm

All kidding aside. Kawika49 is not only THE ultimate fisherman…but can throw together one mean bowl of poke!

C’mon Homey your starting position on the team is in jeopardy!

  284. Laura July 8, 2011 7:34 pm

SteveM, actually that ship was not quite that small, had 2 levels for parking vehicles, including buses. 2 levels of staterooms, and 2 levels for passenger browsing including restuarant and 2 snack bars. People could even pitch pop tents on the after deck. That was a sight to see. #275

  299. Slugger July 8, 2011 7:59 pm

    SteveM,

The boat that Laura mentions is a Ferry that carries vehicles and people up the inland passage. Not really a cruise ship. I’ve slept on the deck (under the heat lamps) going up from Seattle to visit my friend in Sitka a long time ago.

Laura 4 to 5 hours in a bus with big folks, long legs, that’s torture.

Ralph, if you include the approx. 8 hour plane ride, than I will agree with you that it is a long trip to Ruston.

I just went on a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. Great city, and there was a lot I didn’t get to see—but I don’t think I’ll be making that trek again anytime soon. 5 hours to Los Angeles, 3 hours to Houston, 2 hours to Nashville. Thankfully there were no 4-5 hour bus rides, cause the plane ride was exhausting enough.

After going through that, I think one of the questions coaches should ask recruits is, “Do you sleep well on planes?” Cause I absolutely cannot sleep on planes, and that left me dragging the entire trip. There were a couple days where I had three large cups of coffee, and the only reason why I didn’t get more was because of the cost ($3 to $3.50 each).

Granted, I’m woefully out of shape, but I’m not that much older than the guys playing. If I was so exhausted just attending a conference, IDK how they can go about playing a sport. I caught myself thinking once or twice, “What if we had to go to NY than Colorado, like the football team did?”

  308. Jason July 8, 2011 8:53 pm

    *then, not than

BTW, I was kidding about asking recruits if they can sleep on planes. Then again, as silly as it sounds, it might not be a bad idea.

RALPH #266 – You are taking medication for your gout?

  310. tommui July 8, 2011 8:59 pm

IWWTHM #240 You were so quiet, I thought you’d had cruised before.

  311. Ralph July 8, 2011 9:05 pm

Tommui on meds for maintenance and another when there is pain.

  312. Ralph July 8, 2011 9:09 pm

And Jason you are a lot smaller than the OL and DL guys trying to find comfort in the coach section. And I don’t think the bus seats are any wider than the airplane’s.

  313. Ralph July 8, 2011 9:12 pm

tommui if I had Al’s diet and eating habits I’d be in pain all year long with my gout.

  315. HENIEKEN July 8, 2011 9:14 pm

if you want to ever catch the SUGAR BOWL:UH VS UGA

You can go to hulu.com and type in sugar bowl and it has the whole game

  316. Jason July 8, 2011 9:21 pm

And Jason you are a lot smaller than the OL and DL guys trying to find comfort in the coach section. And I don’t think the bus seats are any wider than the airplane’s.

Couple years ago, I had a horrible flight from Honolulu to Portland. I’m only 5’5″, and I felt like a sardine packed into those seats. I dished out the extra $25 to get an exit row seat on the flight back. The two guys sitting next to me were both military, both over 6 ft tall. They were probably thinking, “What’s this little pip-squeak complaining about?”

  317. al July 8, 2011 9:43 pm

294…just go to best buy and purchase a dvr recorder. you could then record all of your favorite stuff from the box to a blank dvr.

  318. al July 8, 2011 9:49 pm

there’s a reason why chef’s prefer cooking fisl with the skin on.

one, it makes for a crispy texture that absorbs the seasonings and it looks good.

two, it keeps the filet from drying out as it helps to hold the oils and moisture of the fish.

  319. al July 8, 2011 9:50 pm

    so what about bubba poueu-luna?

  320. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 10:09 pm

Bingo. Then there’s Pastor Joe, Pride, David M…

  321. HENIEKEN July 8, 2011 10:15 pm

Im pretty sure Bubba Poueu-Luna was here for spring ball….Alot of competition…..If hes playing safety..theres alot of good buggahs to take Mana Silvas spot.Kamalani Alo , Brandon Leslie , Darryl McBride , Leroy Lutu

at the end I say Leslie or Alo takes the spot

And we need to get Aulola Tonga some playing time at LB with Brown , Paredes and Daley playing

  322. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2011 10:20 pm

No matter. We just have to smoke the Buffs and Huskies. Go Warriors!

  325. HENIEKEN July 8, 2011 10:29 pm

You know I wouldnt care for the All Poly camp if I was UH….the recruits there is looking at 3 things and 3 things only…….(PAC12)(BYU)(NOTRE DAME)…..so screw em and lets continue to get our talent from the mainland and JC level

  329. kalani July 8, 2011 10:57 pm

#271 imo Shutter is actually the guy who can make this offense work at its optimum level. It really takes a QB who is willing to stand in there and go through all the progressions. There really are no shortcuts with this offense. During the Warrior Bowl, I believe that I saw the same thing as you from Graves. He either did not fully commit to going through the progressions or just did not get through them fast enough. Consequently, he ended up holding the ball too long and took too many sacks and ended up going 2 for 7 or 2 for 8 on the night. I did, however, see Shutter get the ball out quickly and move the ball, even when he was working with the #3 and #4 receivers. To me, this is important as there is always such a huge drop off with the receivers who have not yet learned the RnS. If one receiver does not do his job, the entire play is in jeopardy. It can really make the QB look stupid (as we saw in against Tulsa). IMO, Shutter has been the guy who has stayed true to the RnS in his apprenticeship and it showed in the Warrior Bowl. Once he gets an opportunity to work with the 1’s, (whoever they may be at the time), I think this offense will hum. Plus he has the arm strength to throw the ball outside, the lack of which, has made us a bit one dimensional the last few years. I just don’t think that Graves has the discipline required for this offense and will therefore plateau to a certain extent in the RnS. And, if Forcier signs, I don’t know if a year’s apprenticeship will be enough.

    #331,

May the best QB win. Forcier started as a true freshmen. I didn’t know that actually. Quite impressive in the B10. Personally I think he could learn the system if he puts his full effort into it.

  333. Kekoa July 8, 2011 11:17 pm

Spoke to sistah LizK early this eve as she was working her way up Nuuanu for a weekend retreat. She’s feeling much better and healing. The solitude and quiet comfort of the upper valley will do wonders for her.

  337. warriorsun July 8, 2011 11:38 pm

we all know what happened to the city of troy the last time a wooden horse was left at their doorstep. so, no one can blame usc for chilling when gift horses come calling. not surprising then, that troy snubbed it’s nose at a tate forcier flirtation for entry– claiming they had 3-QBs, @ with 4 years of eligibility remaining. yet, is hosting a visit by cody green, former cornhusker QB who is shopping out west.

if forcier selects hawaii, guess who he will face in his first game as a warrior?

    tate’s fate?

or another wooden horse that defeats the trojans in their house?

  338. Bryson July 8, 2011 11:46 pm

ST Do you have any info on Bubba Poueu-Luna…I was really excited to see him on the field…Is he still enrolled at UH?

  339. SteveM July 8, 2011 11:48 pm

    Iwonderwhytheyhateme — Sept 4 (Sunday-Sunday), return on the 11th with 6 days before UH-UNLV.

    $449 inside for a 7-day cruise (New Orleans-Costa Maya-Roatan-Belize-Cozumel) is very attractive. 😐

    kalani,

tate forcier is best when he is passes out of the box. like colt did in his first year.

ive been watching his game clips and he likes to break out and dump his throws downfield.

michigan blogsters feel he is best suited in a system that allows this freedom.

we all know hawaii is the antithesis of freeplay and wants someone more disciplined in the pocket to read progressions as u state.

look, both can work–brennan proved that.

move the sticks, cross the goal more than our opponent and we win.

whomever can do that will start…

#330 – our inability to throw deep was also hampered by our inability to control DEs/outside rush …something other teams will have to deal with due to our upgrades in OLB/DE/ Elephant rushes this year …

Thanks for your publiction. Another thing is that just being a photographer will involve not only issues in recording award-winning photographs but also hardships in establishing the best camera suited to your needs and most especially hardships in maintaining the quality of your camera. This is very true and evident for those photographers that are into capturing the nature’s eye-catching scenes — the mountains, the particular forests, the actual wild and the seas. Visiting these daring places definitely requires a photographic camera that can live up to the wild’s hard areas.

I’m considering enrolling in Massachusetts Inst. of Technology (online)Associate degree in Computer Info Systems. Does anyone think that this is a bad idea? Also, does an online Special Education from an established university carry the same stigma as an online Home Schooling from the for-profit schools? By the way, the only way anyone would know if I got the Standards&Testing online is if I told them. There are no special identifiers on the degree .

Hi, I am Chris from FootballAffiliates.com. With football season here we are looking for website owners who want to significantly increase what their site is earning. We offer a 50% commission (which is $23-25 per sale). Our product converts like crazy and really sells itself. Millions of people want to watch football online and our product fills their need. Most of our affiliates just place one of our banners on their site and they make anywhere from $25-$500 per day. Even if your website is not about football we’ve had people simply write one article and place a text link to our product and they earn hundreds per month. If you like more information please check out our high level description at FootballAffiliates.com or you can view our affiliate platform. If you have any questions I welcome them, please send me an email and we can discuss anything you would like to know. Thanks for your time. Chris

My husband travels to get a living. Much more times than he would care to count, his organization has booked him into a hotel which does not offer cable Tv. Last year, while surfing the web, he came across a site the allows him to Watch FlashForward Online. Now he has some thing to complete on those nights when he is bored. This makes me really happy as there have been nights when he would go out searching for one thing to do. He would generally spend much more out for the town than he had made that day. His work is to bring funds in, not spend a lot more than he makes.
