The Warriors had unsupervised passing drills today. Quarterback Bryant Moniz made his first on-field appearance since missing the final three weeks of spring training while on “personal leave.”

Disappointing news about Jeremiah Masoli and new episode with the law. First 2nd degree burglary in March for two laptops and a guitar resulting in an one year probation and $5000 restitution fine, as well as suspension from the team in 2010. Now he gets busted for Marijuana possession (less than 1 oz)and is dismissed from the from the football team. Wonder how this affects his probation, too?

  11. d1島 June 9, 2010 9:18 am

    😆

I was just checking out some archived blog entries from ’08 last night when there were blog chats with the likes of Keala Watson, Inoke Funaki and Coach Mack…my how things have changed….NOT!

  12. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:19 am

Duffer, how did you find this post?
The blog window still shows the old post.

d1… full circle, I suppose… now if we can only get back to a BCS bowl, eh?

  14. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:20 am

    Alright!
A blast from the past… blog chats!

SA needs to update the link on the homepage and add a link to the last blog page…
or is this a test to see if we can find ST in a maze??? 😆

    Go for the Gold Amber!
    Thanks for the memories Melissa!

Can you tell us what you were feeling when J-Rod piped the rock over the fence against Alabama?

  19. Garret June 9, 2010 9:25 am

Thank you for the photos! Hard work during the offseason shows on the field during the season…so hopefully things are going well in their workouts.

  20. Garret June 9, 2010 9:26 am

    Update on RGM.

Based on what I’ve seen all summer, it appears Kory Sheets and Ryan Grice-Mullen are the front runners to begin training camp as the team’s top kickoff returners, and Davone Bess and Brian Hartline will work as the top punt returners. But it appears Taurus Johnson, Grice-Mullen and Marlon Moore are also in the mix…

  21. Garret June 9, 2010 9:27 am

The 49ers will soon play in Santa Clara…but they will still be called the *San Francisco* 49ers.

The 49ers moved a step closer to leaving their longtime San Francisco home after residents in the Silicon Valley city of Santa Clara voted in favor of a new stadium for the NFL team.

Once it begins playing in the new stadium, the team said its name will remain the San Francisco 49ers.

By approving Measure J, voters in Santa Clara signed off on a plan by the team to build the 68,500-seat stadium in the city.

Under preliminary terms with the team, the city and area hotels would contribute $114 million to the $937 million project next to Great America theme park.

  22. Garret June 9, 2010 9:29 am

The Nebraska-to-the-Big 10 situation has gone well past the rumor stage. Kansas congressmen are trying to convince Nebraska congressmen to keep their school in the Big 12. Looks like Iowa State has congressmen working for them also.

That’s what Nebraska’s U.S. senators are hearing from their Kansas colleagues at the Capitol. The Kansans fear that a Big Red departure from the Big 12 could spell the league’s doom and leave their beloved Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats shivering in the cold without a major conference to call home.

If that happens, at least two lawmakers — one from Kansas, the other from Iowa — suggested that congressional action is possible.

On Tuesday, Sen. Pat Roberts, Wildcat Republican, buttonholed Sen. Ben Nelson, Husker Democrat, addressing him in a hallway just off the Senate floor.

“Don’t be the domino that blows college football up into four major conferences and gets rid of the NCAA,” a World-Herald reporter heard the Kansas senator tell Nelson. “It isn’t going to do anybody any good when those dominoes start falling.”

Roberts added, in apparent reference to Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne: “He doesn’t want on his tombstone ‘He ruined the Big 12.’”

  23. Garret June 9, 2010 9:40 am

I had been hoping that the dominoes would wait one year before falling so that UH had a chance to do well this season to attract conferences when the shuffling occurred. Unfortunately, it looks like things are happening NOW. This is from Chip Brown’s twitter:

Nebraska regents have informally agreed to leave for the Big Ten. A formal announcement will come Friday.

Several officials in the Big 12 South have said if Nebraska leaves the conference, the Big 12 is dead.

  24. haka June 9, 2010 9:41 am

    Melissa,
Mentally you must still be feeling great for your individual and team’s success, but how are you feeling physically and when do you start working out for next year?

  25. Garret June 9, 2010 9:41 am

    Some other interesting tidbits.

Baylor’s addition to the Pac-10 being met with resistance by Cal-Berkeley bec of Baylor’s religious ties.

June 14 is the hard deadline for the B12 to decide if the league will remain viable, according to B12 sources.

BYU and Air Force have been identified as possible schools to join B12 if the league loses 2 schools and can be salvaged.

  26. Garret June 9, 2010 9:42 am

With the news that Nebraska is gone, this is an important meeting.

Texas and Texas A&M will meet Thursday to discuss if they are on the same page if B12 falls apart.

  27. Garret June 9, 2010 9:42 am

Colorado sure is in bad shape relative to the other BCS AQ conferences!

Colorado will be only BCS fball program to get NCAA APR sanctions Wednesday and one of only 2 BCS hoops programs to get sanctioned.

  28. LizKauai (iChrome) June 9, 2010 9:44 am

    Dangit…
Tried to update my blogroll with the new addy and the SA bounces the link back to the homepage.

    ok.
    hiho!

  29. Slugger June 9, 2010 9:45 am

#21: Santa Clara will be regretting not supporting the funding (tax) to get a BART line down the peninsula decades ago. People south of SF are now asking to extend the BART (light rail) line down to San Jose. With a new stadium in Santa Clara, it would be perfect. It’s going to cost so much more if they start that project now.

  30. Kazz June 9, 2010 9:46 am

    MELISSA,

WELCOME BACK AND WE’RE ALL SO PROUD OF YOU AND YOUR TEAMMATES!!!

  31. Slugger June 9, 2010 9:47 am

That looks like Kaha’i opposite Austin.

  32. Kazz June 9, 2010 9:48 am

    MELISSA,

I HEARD THAT YOU WILL BE UNDERGOING A PROCEDURE FOR YOUR NON THROWING ARM DURING THE SUMMER, IF SO, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT REHAB AFTERWARDS AND HOW IT WILL EFFECT YOUR TRAINING UNTIL SPRING 2011?

  33. Kazz June 9, 2010 9:50 am

Who’s the guy left of Kahai in that last photo??? 😯 What is he? Like 7’3″? 😆

  34. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:50 am

    Slugger.. .
    What you just said….
Kind of makes sense in Oahu’s situation, too.
I mean.. if they ever get a rail from Kapolei to UH… a stadium could be put anywhere on that line.

  35. Kazz June 9, 2010 9:52 am

    MELISSA,

WITH ONLY YOU AND J-ROD AS THE TWO SENIORS NEXT SEASON, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ASSUMING THAT LEADERSHIP ROLE TO HELP GET THE 2011 TEAM BACK TO THE WORLD SERIES? I THOUGHT AMANDA TAUALII AND KATIE GRIMES DID AN AWESOME JOB AS THE SENIOR MENTORS TO THE TEAM.

  36. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:55 am

    Garret,

Sounds like Nebraska holds the key to all the various conference re-alignments. This informal agreement to move, might be the spark that ignites action and makes it all happen.

I don’t remember what happened exactly when the WAC got splintered and all the teams left. How did UH fill the season’s schedules until Boise, Idaho, Utah State and La Tech were added?

  37. Kazz June 9, 2010 9:56 am

    MELISSA,

WHAT WAS THE MOOD LIKE WITH THE RETURNING PLAYERS ON THE TEAM AFTER THE LOSS TO ARIZONA?

  38. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:56 am

Was New Mexico State also added at that time?

  39. LizKauai (iChrome) June 9, 2010 9:59 am

MELISSA – Congrats to you and your teammates! What are your plans for the summer?

  40. jm2375 June 9, 2010 10:01 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

    Good luck to Amber!

    back to work. hiho

  41. Unkanesson June 9, 2010 10:03 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation!

Congratulations to the UH Athletic Dept. on the APR news:

“All 18 University of Hawaii-Manoa athletic teams reached the minimum NCAA Academic Performance Rate benchmark and the school will not face a loss of scholarships for the first time in the six-year history of the academic yardstick, the university said.”

I think Jim Donovan deserves a lot of credit for a job well done (and not just for this).

  42. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:03 am

    MELISSA,

WITH THE FIRST 5 BATTERS IN THE ORDER RETURING NEXT SEASON, HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU ALL WILL “GEL” WITH THE INCOMING FRESHMAN? COACH COOLEN CITED THIS YEAR’S TEAM CHEMISTRY AS A BIG REASON WHY YOU GUYS GOT AS FAR AS YOU DID.

  43. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:07 am

CONGRATS TO COACH COOLEN ON A WELL-DESERVED BONUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOW… HOW ‘BOUT DEM RWSS IMPROVEMENTS TO GO ALONG WITH IT??? BUTTER UP THE COACH WITH A BONUS IS FINE, BUT LET’S GIVE HIM AND HIS LADIES THE COURTESY OF FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS…. OR AT LEAST THEIR OWN SEPERATE BATHROOMS ON GAMEDAY!!!!!!!! 😡

  44. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:07 am

Melissa, congratulations on a great season. I’ve read that the Na Wahine are doing an awesome job weight lifting, how much can you squat lift and bench press?

  45. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:09 am

Melissa, did you injury your elbow and shoulder during the season, or post season, or is it related to injuries you had in your freshman and sophomore years?

  46. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:10 am

Melissa, which pitcher had the best rise ball that you faced this season?

  47. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:12 am

Kazz, what bonus is Coolen receiving?

  48. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:12 am

    hello everyone!

  49. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:14 am

hi ralph, i actually hurt my shoulder at the beginning of the season and my elbow just started hurting post season

  50. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:14 am

Good Morning Melissa! Welcome home and Congratulations on a great season

  51. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:14 am

i think that alabama’s pitcher had a great riseball, she definitely got me swinging

  52. Lite Tsaik (o) June 9, 2010 10:15 am

Melissa, do you think being on the road for 28 days, playing all those intense games and traveling through all those time zones finally took a toll on the team’s performance, physically and mentally?

  53. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 10:16 am

UH ranks 101 on Phil Steele’s toughest schedule list…
    http://blog.philsteele.com/2010/06/07/2010s-toughest-schedules/

  54. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:16 am

im not exactly sure how much i can bench press and squat but i would have to say that bench pressing is my weakness, while squats are my strength

  55. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:17 am

Melissa, what do you see out of the pitcher’s hand on a rise, seems funny seeing batters swinging at a pitch that passes at the level of the helmet

  56. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:18 am

i definitely do think that by the end of the road trip we were just exhausted but i also think that the team did really well with trying to stay healthy on the road. being on the road that long though will definitely take a toll on anyone

  57. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 10:18 am

Oops.. sorry.. didn’t realize Melissa was already here.. thought it was scheduled for 10:30!!!

Welcome Melissa! Congrats on an outstanding season! You and all the Wahine Softball Players and coach!

  58. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:19 am

when the pitcher throws the ball it looks right up in the top of the strike zone, which a lot of hitters like but then it gets too high by the time you have already decided to swing

  59. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:20 am

thank you so much, we all really appreciated the support!

  60. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:21 am

kazz, i think we have enough returners that have experienced the chemistry of this team to be able to share that with the incoming freshmen

  61. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:23 am

also kazz, jenna and i are very different and i think we will both take different approaches to leading the team next year. although we are different though, i think we will be able to compliment each other and hopefully we will do well in leading the team

  62. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:24 am

Melissa, do you and the other California girls offer Coolen suggestion on recruits? I notice a lot of the top players in regional play and world series were from California and playing on out of state teams.

  63. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:25 am

Haka, i am extremely happy with the success of my team this year. its great to be back home though and i’m definitely going to be taking a week or two of much needed rest

  64. bb June 9, 2010 10:26 am

    MG,

How do the various facilities that you guys visited (Bama, Stanford, NMSU) compare to UH’s facilities? (Field, locker rooms, weight rooms, etc)

  65. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:27 am

Ralph, if we know of talented player back home that are interested in going to school out of state then we may mention their names to him, but overall he has his own idea of who should be brought in to our team so its pretty much all up to him

  66. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:29 am

BB, honestly the other campuses we visited were all beautiful and the facilities were all top of the line. it was nice to experience different campuses and fields, but even after seeing all of those places i wouldn’t trade the experiences that i have had here in hawaii for them

  67. Slugger June 9, 2010 10:30 am

    Hi, MeeGee,

Do you think the team can get to the WCWS again next season?

  68. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:31 am

Haka sorry i didn’t see that message earlier, but when Jenna hit that ball over in Alabama it had to be one of the most exciting softball experiences i have had even if i wasn’t the one to do it and thats what playing a team sport is all about i think

  69. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:32 am

hey slugger, i definitely think we have a chance to make it back next year. this team is confident and we have enough people returning to express that in the field again next year

  70. Slugger June 9, 2010 10:33 am

This Tsaiko group helped raise donations at the last home stand. Do you happen to know what the ‘booster’ funds were used for on the road? Mary? The OKC Bombing Monument trip? Probably not for the usual expenses, like food, travel, etc., right?

  71. bb June 9, 2010 10:33 am

    MG,

Should the UH athletic department charge admission to your games?

If so, how much should be fair?

IMHO, UH softball is worth more than a few bucks.

  72. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:34 am

    MELISSA,

DOES THE TEAM ALREADY HAVE AN IDEA OF THE SCHEDULE COACH COOLEN HAS CRAFTED FOR THE “PRE SEASON” NEXT YEAR?

  73. Slugger June 9, 2010 10:34 am

    MG,

Katie Grimes did an outstanding job calling games. What catchers do we have who can step in this next year?

  74. Pomai June 9, 2010 10:35 am

Melissa I just wanted to thank you an the rest of the girls for the past season a few of us just knew you would go all the way to the CWS

  75. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:35 am

Mary? HA! WOW! That bear got some major TV time. It’s hard not to notice a googly-eyed stuff bear staring at you in the background while the camera tries to get a shot of Coolen on the air! 😆

  76. Slugger June 9, 2010 10:36 am

Please relay to your team members: WE LOVE YOU! GREAT SEASON! lOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON!!!

  77. koakane™ June 9, 2010 10:36 am

    morning tsaiko country, kopeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  78. d1島 June 9, 2010 10:37 am

    Hi Melissa,

Thanks for representing UH so well!

There was so much talk on this blog about how some of the comments on ESPN seemed to be biased against the newcomer to the WCWS. Did you sense anything like that in the interviews and interaction you had with the ESPN personnel? Do you feel they were fair in their coverage?

  79. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:38 am

Slugger, i honestly don’t know where the donations went, but i don’t think they went towards the usual expenses, sorry i don’t know more about that.

BB, i think they should charge admission for our games, i think it would help our athletic department if our sport brought in more money and it would also help our program, i’m not sure how much i would charge though

and Kazz, we don’t know anything about next years schedule but we should find out as soon as the next fall semester begins

  80. Pomai June 9, 2010 10:38 am

Melissa have you ever hit a baseball? If so how much different is it hitting a softball?

  81. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:38 am

    MELISSA,

RALPH (ON THIS BLOG) POINTED OUT ALL SEASON LONG THAT YOU APPEARED TO HAVE THE MOST “FLUID” AND NATURAL SWING IN THE LINE UP. NOT TOO MUCH MOVEMENT, JUST A NICE SWING WITH A GREAT FOLLOW-THROUGH.

DID YOU HAVE A BATTING COACH WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER OR DID YOU DEVELOP THIS YOURSELF OVER TIME?

  82. roysan16 June 9, 2010 10:40 am

    Melissa,

    Batting practice?

    Is it all live pitching?

    Or machine?

    Or batting tee?

  83. koakane™ June 9, 2010 10:40 am

just saying mahalo to the wahine team, you ladies rock

  84. Pomai June 9, 2010 10:40 am

Melissa how much time do you an the others spend on batting practice?

  85. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:40 am

All the the ESPN personnel were very friendly and didnt seem to be biased when we spoke with them, but i do agree that some of their comments during the games did seem biased and we didnt enjoy all of them

  86. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:41 am

    MELISSA,

FOR THE INCOMING RECRUITS, WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE FIRST THING ABOUT YOUR PRACTICES THAT WILL MAKE THEM REALIZE, “WOW, THIS IS FOR REAL, I AM PLAYING D1 SOFTBALL!”

  87. koakane™ June 9, 2010 10:42 am

how was coach dickie and what did he contribute that was different from last year

  88. Slugger June 9, 2010 10:42 am

    Melissa,

How often do your parents & family come out to HNL to watch you play?

  89. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:42 am

    MELISSA,

COULD YOU SHARE WITH US THE REASONS YOU CHOSE HAWAII FOR COLLEGE AND WHAT THE PROCESS WAS LIKE?

  90. Pomai June 9, 2010 10:42 am

Melissa during the season what was a routine day for you?

  91. d1島 June 9, 2010 10:43 am

    🙄

Why not ask if they play sky inning?

  92. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:43 am

Kazz, i have never had a batting coach, but all of the coaches i have had during my development definitely did help me out. it really just all kind of developed for me throughout the years so a big THANKS to all my past coaches. At batting practice we really do a little of everything. we hit off the tee and the machine, and coach bob gives us a lot of live pitching as well

  93. Kekoa June 9, 2010 10:44 am

Thanks Ralph for the heads up!

  94. Ralph June 9, 2010 10:45 am

D1 her grandparents probably played sky inning, new generation can afford real bats and ball and a field to play on.

  95. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:46 am

Slugger, i have actually only had one visit so far from my sister and brother in-law this last spring. its difficult for my family to get out here, but i do have a lot of support back home and they all watch the games when they are filmed

  96. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:46 am

    MELISSA,

COACH COOLEN HAS ALWAYS LOVED THE LONG BALL. HE DESCRIBED THE INCOMING RECRUITS AS “ADDING SPEED AND GIVING OUR OFFENSE A NEW DIMENSION”.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE WEAKNESS OF THE TEAM THIS SEASON AND HOW NEXT SEASON WILL SHAPE UP KNOWING WHAT YOU ALL HAVE TO WORK ON AS A TEAM WITH NEW FACES?

  97. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:48 am

i chose hawaii because i wanted to experience a different culture than in california. i also wanted to go somewhere where i could establish myself and kind of give myself time to grow. I also knew that hawaii had a good softball program and i wanted to be a part of that

  98. mctruck June 9, 2010 10:48 am

Hi, Melissa…you young ladies did a great job.

I never took much interest in baseball, let alone softball; I can blame you girls for my addiction now!!!, bwaaaahahaha!!

  99. roysan16 June 9, 2010 10:49 am

    melissa,

are the softball practices open to the public?

  100. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:50 am

if i were to pick a weaknes for my team i guess it would have to be speed. we definitely have some quick girls such as alex aguirre and brynne buchannon but for the most part a lot of us rely on the “longball” to get around the bases

  101. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:51 am

and also i think our team will do fine with welcoming new faces, we have had a lot of challenges as a team this year so welcoming new people shouldnt be a problem at all

  102. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:51 am

    MELISSA,

WHEN NEW RECRUITS COME IN, ARE THE PLAYERS ON THE TEAM GIVEN OPPORUNITIES TO “HOST” THESE RECRUITS LIKE IN OTHER SPORTS? HAVE YOU HOSTED ANY RECRUITS IN YOUR TIME AT UH?

  103. Pomai June 9, 2010 10:52 am

Melissa I did notice that a few of you really went for the high riser, what is your best pitch location?

  104. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:52 am

yes our practices are open to public!

and mctruck, thank you it exciting to know that we are getting more people interested in the sport that we love!

  105. koakane™ June 9, 2010 10:52 am

ok kazz we know you excite but give chance

  106. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:53 am

yes we host just like other teams. i have hosted one recruit and i enjoyed it

  107. Kazz June 9, 2010 10:53 am

    MELISSA,

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR REPRESENTING HAWAII SO WELL ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. THE THING THAT IMPRESSED ME THE MOST WAS THE TEAM’S ABILITY TO REMAIN STABLE NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE OR THE STAGE OR HOW MANY CAMERAS WERE ON YOU GUYS.

HERE’S WISHING FOR A GREAT SUMMER FOR YOU AND ALL YOUR TEAMMATES AND WE’LL BE BACK IN THE SPRING TO CHEER YOU ALL ON AGAIN!!!

  108. whitey June 9, 2010 10:54 am

Melissa, congratulations to you and your team. The excitement all of you brought appears to be contagious and looks like it could be the start of a new era of Wahine softball.

  109. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:55 am

koakane, i really like coach dickie out there with us, he has a very mellow coaching style that we dont really get from coach bob so its nice to have a different dimension of coaching

  110. Kekoa June 9, 2010 10:55 am

Melissa ~ Thanks for making us all so proud! From the time we put the funding together for the bracelets, I’ve been a big fan of the team. Mahalo for your hard work. Here is my question:

What was the reaction from you and the others after the Alabama game? How did you celebrate the win?

  111. uhfan June 9, 2010 10:55 am

    Melissa,

Do you guys hold softball camps?

  112. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:56 am

thank you so much for the support Kazz we will do our best to give you guys another incredible season!

  113. whitey June 9, 2010 10:56 am

and before i porget, good morning tsaikos

  114. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:56 am

yes we do hold camps, we actually have one coming up next week!

  115. Slugger June 9, 2010 10:58 am

    Melissa,

How much pitching practice do you get since you’re the backup pitcher?

  116. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 10:59 am

Well our reaction was probably the best we had all year to jenna’s hit and honestly it was such an exciting and exhausting day that we all went back watched the replay (just to relive the moment:) and then all went to sleep for the most part!

  117. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:00 am

slugger, this past season when i took on the role of third base i kind of gave up my pitching role. i really wanted to have a stable part on the team so i decided that i would try and work towards being good at one position

  118. Slugger June 9, 2010 11:00 am

…I should ask that about all of the backup pitchers on the team…

  119. uhfan June 9, 2010 11:01 am

    Melissa,

What was it like playing against your old high school teammate Charlotte Morgan?

  120. Slugger June 9, 2010 11:01 am

    MG,

    You’re doing a terrific job at 3B!

  121. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:03 am

Stephanie, Kaia, and Jenna do the most pitching practice. some of them pitch almost everyday while others only a few times a week. it all really depends on what they need to stay in shape

  122. Slugger June 9, 2010 11:03 am

Are any of you on FB? I have some pictures in an album from the 2008 game at ASU. (Mei Ling)

  123. Kekoa June 9, 2010 11:03 am

    One more question:

What was your reaction to what the ESPN announcers were saying about the team hitting so many homeruns?

They made it sound soooo disrespectful. They obviously didn’t have their facts together, yet they felt so knowledgeable about about passing on this bogus information.

How did they make you feel?

Thank you again, and please enjoy your summer. (Tell Stephen Tsai you have our permission to come to his Blog Bash on August 7th!)

  124. roysan16 June 9, 2010 11:03 am

    melissa,

when do you girls start practicing again, or have you already? lol

  125. A-House June 9, 2010 11:03 am

    melissa:

I have posted before that the 2010 Na Wahine team brought much joy and pride to the entire State of Hawaii and you, the players, did it with grace, dignity, and athleticism.

You all saw the facilities at the “big time” schools. If you had a wish list, what would you like to see “added” to the current facilities?

  126. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:04 am

playing against Charlotte was nice since i havent seen her in a while, but ofcourse i felt a little bad that we had to be the team that took her team out of the chance to go to wcws in her senior year

  127. uhfan June 9, 2010 11:06 am

    Melissa,

During the off season does Bob give the players a list of things he’d like them to work on or do you guys already know what needs to be done?

  128. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:06 am

well about the announcers..we did feel that they were under rating our accomplishments and we were all a little upset about it, but we also tried not to let all of that get to us because we knew we had fans that believed in us and all of our achievments

  129. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:07 am

if i could get anything added just for our program i think it would have to be a locker room..i got a little jealous after seeing how nice other schools were. lol

  130. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:08 am

for the most part our team knows what we should be doing in the off-season. we do get a workout plan thouhg, when it comes to lifting and conditioning

  131. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:09 am

we havent started practicing yet we definitely need a break, but we will start working out again within the next few weeks and slowly get back into things

  132. roysan16 June 9, 2010 11:10 am

    melissa,

do you have any other relatives that attended UH? any future relatives contemplating attending UH?

  133. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:12 am

i don’t have any relatives that have attended UH. i’m actually the first to be attending a four year college, but i do have a little brother that is thinking about coming here to play basketball. he has a couple of years to think about it though

  134. uhfan June 9, 2010 11:14 am

    Melissa,

The wahine were clearly the fan favorites at the WCWS. What was it like having all those fans clearly for you guys and making a ton of new fans all over the country?

  135. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:16 am

the WCWS was definitely a great opportunity to bring in more fans and it was exciting to meet new people from all of the country that were rooting for us. it was great having so much support from home and then getting new support from the mainland

  136. uhfan June 9, 2010 11:17 am

    Melissa,

After you graduate do you plan on pursuing softball professionally?

  137. melissa gonzalez June 9, 2010 11:18 am

well everything seems to be winding down.. thank everyone for the questions and all of the support! the whole team definitely appreciates it!
i hope to see all of you out at the field next year:)
    ALOHA!

  138. Slugger June 9, 2010 11:20 am

Eighth pick (6/186) QB Colt Brennan (Hawaii)

    Stats: No regular-season game appearances

What he’s done: We have seen Brennan in two preseasons, and his results in each of them have been markedly different. In 2008 he looked like a phenom, and he quickly became a fan favorite. Brennan made the roster and sat as the third quarterback all year. Last year he seemed to regress as he threw some bad interceptions and his play was generally ineffective. Hip and hamstring injuries pushed him to the injured reserve list.

What he needs to do: According to Brennan, the current coaching staff is not micromanaging his footwork and his release. That is a change from Jim Zorn, who demanded exacting steps on the drop back and motion on throws. While Kyle Shanahan may not care how the ball gets delivered, he will be very interested in it reaching its intended target. In other words, Shanahan isn’t interested in the labor pains, but he wants to see the baby. The Redskins did not draft a quarterback, and they did not sign one as a rookie free agent. That means that Brennan has a shot at being the team’s developmental quarterback. A preseason like the one he had in 2008 would go a long way towards helping him get there.”

I’m glad that the Star-Advertiser chose to use the “sectional” format for its paper as the “book” type meant only one peerson at a time could read it.

Also bentofan in SH Forum said that Phil Steele is predicting a UH vs SMU match up for the Sheridan Hawaii Bowl. I can’t find that info anywhere else, though.

  147. A-House June 9, 2010 11:39 am

    Garret:

APR sanctions – I wonder how schools like Kentucky are not penalized when the basketball team has a grad rate well under 40% – some mentioned is was like 20%?

Is it because the NCAA takes an “average”?

During the NCAA basketball tournament, it was pointed out that if the minimum % was 50%, 12 of the biggest name schools would NOT be invited.

With so many “underclassmen’ making the leap into the pros, somewhere along the way the BCS schools must take a hit in one or more of their sports programs.

DIDN’T COACH COOLEN JUST GET HOME???? 😯

  149. homey ℞ June 9, 2010 11:56 am

    ST,

Is five years the most a coach at UH can get on his contract? Is it a state thing or a UH thing?

  160. LizKauai (iPhone) June 9, 2010 1:12 pm

    Yea for Mike!

At the dentist. Got a call from daughter. Grandson Gryphon has a clean bill of health. It was an underskin birthmark. Mahalo, Ke Akua! Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts everyone!

  161. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2010 1:22 pm

The Board of Regents sets the the pay range for a head coach. I believe UH can offer 20 percent above the range; anything more, in base salary, must be approved by the BOR.

  162. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2010 1:23 pm

As for length, I’m sure somebody could get longer than five years, but why do that? It wouldn’t be fair to the school or coach.

  163. Kekoa June 9, 2010 1:26 pm

No more scary stuff from your ohana Tutu Liz. That boy may be the next star athlete at UH one day! Just like a batter with a full count…gotta PROTECT!

  170. Esme June 9, 2010 1:53 pm

Not to be sexist, but ………………. Easy to change bat boy to girl or water boy to water girl

Still gotta see the ball, hit the ball.

As long as the bats meet BESR standards for softball then there should be no problem. I problem is many don’t understand the practice and training these women do to better their game.

In simplistic terms if a player gets 10% stronger then naturally she’ll hit the ball 10% harder. If a player dedicates more time to improve their bat to ball contact then naturally the player will get more hits and more opportunity to put it out of the park. Some people are so ignorant.

    AMBEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved watching Amber Kaufman as a Rainbow Wahine volleyball player. I wrote many times about the “FIRE” she had as a competitor and I loved how she wore her emotions on sleeve and took it out on the volleyball.

I would have loved to see her rejoyce with her teammates over a national title in volleyball, but today Amber stands alone as a NATIONAL CHAMPION!!!

What a great “find” for UH athletics as a whole!!!

Just watched the Travel Channel. They had the Best American Breakfasts (or something like that) on. This place called the Machine Shed had Tsai-ko sized servings. Oh my! The cinnamon roll must have been 8″ across and about 9″ high, smothered in icing. Talk about a sugar rush, diabetic shock, not being able to sleep for days and days!

Anyhow, if anyone (Esme) has some time (Esme) about now (Esme) someone might (Esme) want to (Esme) give it (Esme) a try (Esme). 10 cups of flour makes 12 rolls. DANG!

Maybe someone (Esme) can bring it to the Blog Bash on August 7?

  274. Garret June 9, 2010 5:23 pm

Update on Sol…unfortunately, his injured hamstring has kept him out of practice and he’ll miss their preseason game on Sunday.

A highly touted linebacker from the University of Hawaii, Elimimian felt like a lost soul after he was cut from the camp of the Buffalo Bills last season. Having it happen for a second time would be equally punishing to his psyche.

“Football’s our passion,” Elimimian said Wednesday. “It’s something we love doing. When you don’t have that in your life for a great amount of time, you definitely miss it. You have a greater urge to go out there and make plays when you get the chance. I didn’t realize how quickly it could be gone — until last year.”

How tough is it for Elimimian to sit and watch as other rookies such as Henderson earn the privilege to play in Sunday’s preseason game in Regina? It hurts worse than his hamstring. You don’t have long to leave a lasting impression in training camp. And every practice missed is an opportunity squandered.

“Joe’s definitely excited,” Elimimian says of his roommate. “When you haven’t played for a year or a couple, like we have, it definitely is. It’s something we all love doing. It’s a joy to be out there, making plays. It’s our passion. I missed it last year, and I’m missing it now.”

  275. Garret June 9, 2010 5:24 pm

ESPN says that Colorado has already been invited to the Pac-10…Baylor will be left behind.

With Nebraska apparently headed to the Big Ten, the Pac-10 is poised to become the Pac-16.

Colorado already has received an invitation to join the conference, while five other invitations will be extended to Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

  276. Garret June 9, 2010 5:26 pm

The Pac-16 might not even play a championship game! They might ask for the Pac-8 division to get a BCS spot (Rose Bowl) and the Big 12 South division to get another BCS spot (Fiesta Bowl would sign on for that).

The coach said it’s possible the Pac-16 would push for two automatic bids to the BCS, one for each division champion. That potential bonanza could open the possibility of the two division champs from one league playing for the national title, and it would eliminate the need for a conference championship game.

“The Pac-10 doesn’t believe in a championship game,” the coach said. “And coaches in the Big 12 don’t like it anyway.”

  277. Garret June 9, 2010 5:27 pm

The LA Times says that Texas’ AD already told their coaches they will likely go to the Pac-10. Texas and Texas A&M are meeting tomorrow…they have to finalize Pac-10, Big 10, or SEC…

Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds reportedly told his coaches Wednesday that the Big 12 was breaking up and the Longhorns were likely headed to the Pac-10.

Bob Coolen coming up on the Sports Animals

  279. 808ike June 9, 2010 5:31 pm

    Nebraska starts the process.

Now Pres. and ADs are having “PANIC ATTACK”.

  280. Garret June 9, 2010 5:31 pm

The Northwestern reporter for rivals (I’m guessing he’s supposed to be the Chip Brown equivalent for the Northwest US) says that the Big 10 has invited Texas and Texas A&M! It would be interesting to be at the meeting between Texas and Texas A&M tomorrow…

With Nebraska already committed, this report says that Texas, Texas A&M and Notre Dame have been invited to the Big 10. Missouri has a conditional invitation–they get invited if Texas or Notre Dame join the Big 10.

If Texas and Texas A&M go to the Big 10, then the Big 12 might actually survive and the Pac-10 might stop at 12 teams. I would think that would be best for UH since the Big 12 would raid the MWC and the MWC would need WAC teams…

Breaking: Big Ten Offers Texas, Texas A&M, Missouri and Notre Dame
Just spoke with my friend at the Big Ten. The offer to Missouri is contingent upon Texas AND/OR ND joining. Will post more details as I hear.

UH Manoa sports program improves academic performance

    By Ferd Lewis
    POSTED: 08:18 a.m. HST, Jun 09, 2010

All 18 University of Hawaii-Manoa athletic teams reached the minimum NCAA Academic Performance Rate benchmark and the school will not face a loss of scholarships for the first time in the six-year history of the academic yardstick, the university said.

In previous years UH-Manoa has been sanctioned in men’s basketball, baseball and football.
But all three sports scored above the 925 point multi-year benchmark that measures retention and graduation for the 2008-’09 academic year.

    Men’s basketball was 1,000, baseball was 980 and football 975. …..

I could care less about the Heisman Awards or the revoked wins and their 2004 BCS National Title.

I’m quite pleased with the reduction in scholarship amounts. THAT’S HOW YOU MAKE A STATEMENT NCAA!!!!

I’m still surprised they had the olos to hand out justice to those with deep pockets and high priced attorneys.

  306. Garret June 9, 2010 7:15 pm

    Major penalties for USC!

A two-year bowl ban and a loss of more than 20 football scholarships are among the sanctions that the NCAA has dealt USC, a source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

Limited recruiting contacts, probation and forfeiture of victories are also among the penalties regarded as possibly in play.

  307. 808ike June 9, 2010 7:21 pm

    Good. Repeat offender.

Too bad USC will appeal. If appeal is rejected, then law suit.

  308. d1島 June 9, 2010 7:22 pm

I hope wafan is able to sleep tonight….

Pete Carroll is laughing really loud!

  309. Kazz June 9, 2010 7:23 pm

I got an angry text message from a relative in the So-Cal area who wasn’t pleased with my boasting and bragging about SC’s penalties.

The bottom line is, things like this are a step in the right direction to morality in college athletics. Money and the drive to win FOR THE MONEY (i.e. TV deals, etc…) breed the kind of arrogance written about and performed in movies.

We talk about the “domino” effect conference expansion may have nation-wide, but I hope that this incident will create another domino effect in which big money programs with big money interests will be looked at more carefully as they explore every loophole in NCAA regulations in an attempt to enhance their programs.

  310. Kazz June 9, 2010 7:24 pm

    808ike,

Thanks again for the phone call earlier. Hey! Good news day in sports huh? Kaufman winning GOLD, Coach Coolen getting a hard-earned bonus, and SC getting their just “due”.

    😆

  312. 200. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 7:27 pm

For a program as high up as USC to stoop so low ethically … my oh my.. that’s a lot of bending over… the players who played for USC these past few years all have a Scarlet letter to go with their memories now. It doesn’t matter if USC appeals and gets some of it back… the verdict has been doled out.. and the public is informed.

  313. Pomai June 9, 2010 7:27 pm

What really gripes me is that the guy who should receive the biggest punishment isn’t getting any. Pete Carroll should somehow receive some punishment also, now you know why he left what a wuz

    -AMBER KAUFMAN (GOLD MEDAL)

  315. 200. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 7:31 pm

  316. 200. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 7:33 pm

The rich and powerful do NOT like to get humbled. They live on their own set of rules and truly believe they are above reproach.

Lawyers like to get paid and paid by the hour they enjoy. This is going to be a circus that won’t end soon enough.

  321. Kazz June 9, 2010 7:39 pm

  322. 200. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 7:39 pm

  323. Kazz June 9, 2010 7:40 pm

Lot’s of championships at UH to celebrate from the 09-10 season.

Congratulations to Amber Kaufman. What an accomplishment. Way to go girl.

  325. Kazz June 9, 2010 7:42 pm

I think this time the NCAA made sure they got their “ducks in a row” before even attempting to go after USC in this manner. They lost a big profile lawsuit to a big money school before and SC is one of the BIGGEST MONEY schools around.

In the end the NCAA comes out on top and SC will have no choice but to like it.

  326. whitey June 9, 2010 7:44 pm

even if Nebraska goes to the Big 10, i think what was said earlier by one of the congressman will hold true for Tom Osborne. His epitaph will read “Great Coach Who Killed The Big 12”.

More about the SEC option for Texas A&M.

A source confirmed to SI.com late Wednesday that emissaries from the SEC initiated discussions with Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne months ago, and while the SEC is just one of several potential options for the Aggies, it remains an option heading into Thursday’s meeting between Texas A&M and Texas officials. At the meeting, power brokers from both schools will discuss a last-ditch effort to save the Big 12, even if Nebraska’s Board of Regents votes Friday to leave for the Big Ten. “It’s on life support,” the source said of the Big 12. “But people have come off life support before.”

Officials also will discuss a potential invitation from the Pac-10 that also would include four other Big 12 schools. Presumably, they also will discuss the SEC’s talks with Texas A&M.

  331. Garret June 9, 2010 7:57 pm

If I was USC.. I’d use the University of Hawaii 13 game exemption to book two extra games.. one in 2010.. another in 2012…to offset lost revenues. Then be grateful for the Hawaii 13th game exemption.

    madeinhawaii,

USC is already playing at Aloha Stadium in 2010. If their bowl bans are for 2010 and 2011, then they could only add a game in 2011 at Hawaii. UH already has Oregon State to end the 2011 season.

UH cannot add a game against USC at Aloha Stadium in 2012 because UH is already playing at USC in 2012.

USC doesn’t make money by playing at Aloha Stadium–they make their money by playing at home. That is why teams want home games now in return for playing at Hawaii. Games at Aloha Stadium are covered by the WAC’s TV deal, so USC and the Pac-10 don’t have the TV rights for road games.

  332. whitey June 9, 2010 7:58 pm

as it looks right now, 4 schools in the big 12 will be staying put, iowa state, kanaas, kansas state, and baylor. on surface this does not look like much, but these schools have awesome clout within their state and my funny bone is starting to act up

  333. Garret June 9, 2010 7:58 pm

I would like for USC to be punished severely. That would really set an example that other schools would take note of. USC is a repeat offender with serious offenses in both revenue sports in the same time period, so this is a perfect case for the NCAA to take note of.

  334. whitey June 9, 2010 8:02 pm

imho, there is absolutely no way texas am and texas will go to seperate conference. they already know that their legislators will not allow this and no matter what, the texas legislators will have the last say. this is texas football.

If the Big 12 gets raided big time, I would think that they in turn would have to raid the Mountain West and Conf USA to keep the conf from disappearing off the map. That would be a very sad day for the Big 12.

    whitey,

From what I’ve heard, Texas and Texas A&M could decide to *both* go to the SEC. I agree with you and don’t think that Texas A&M would go to the SEC by themselves. If both Texas A&M and Texas go to the SEC, some reports say that Florida State some other school like Georgia Tech could be added to get the SEC to 16 teams.

  345. A-House June 9, 2010 8:18 pm

Yea for the NCAA to stand up to USC and doling out stiff punishments to the football program. What about the basketball penalties? Guess we must wait to read it in the paper.

What, in your opinion, hurts USC most in this sanction? loss of scholarships? victories now losses? no post season game(s)? giving up their claim to a national championship? giving up a Heisman trophy?

  346. jm2375 June 9, 2010 8:18 pm

    Kazz-

The NCAA goes light on big schools (who are known to cheat more often and with more intensity) and drops the hammer on small ones (who are more likely to have bumbled their way into trouble). Or, as Jerry Tarkanian famously surmised: “the NCAA was so mad at Kentucky, it gave Cleveland State two more years of probation.”

WHEN IS YOUR PHOTO GOING TO BE ADDED TO THE BLOG???

Also, when is there going to be the REAL link to this blog? My blackberry keeps getting the mobile version of the Star Advertiser and no way to get to the blog at this current address.

  349. Garret June 9, 2010 8:24 pm

    A-House,

The NCAA doesn’t have any say over the Heisman trophy. I hope that organization (DAC) takes away Bush’s trophy (and gives it to Vince Young who should have had it anyway). But that doesn’t hurt USC at all–they have lots of other Heisman winners (including Leinart the year before Bush) and recruits won’t care.

The big punishments are the loss of scholarships and limited recruiting visits. Those are the types of penalties that hurt football programs for years. The 2-year bowl ban will cost USC a lot of money, but it won’t affect recruiting much because the recruits they are talking to now would only miss a bowl game during their freshman or redshirt year.

  350. d1島 June 9, 2010 8:28 pm

    Kazz,

You beat me to it re: that Cleveland St. quote 😆

  351. d1島 June 9, 2010 8:33 pm

but it won’t affect recruiting much because the recruits they are talking to now would only miss a bowl game during their freshman or redshirt year.

Blue Chips don’t like to spend New Years’ Day at home….

  352. d1島 June 9, 2010 8:34 pm

…and Lane Kiffin was probably counting on all those extra practices.

  353. d1島 June 9, 2010 8:39 pm

Speaking of Kiffin, I imagine folks are being shaken outta bed all over Knoxville and singing loud choruses of “Rocky Top”!

  354. Garret June 9, 2010 8:39 pm

The bowl ban hurts some, but losing scholarships hurts a LOT. A-House was asking what hurts the most…I think that losing scholarships and having limitations put on their recruiting for years in other ways (limiting contacts with recruits, etc.) hurts more than a 2-year bowl ban.

  355. d1島 June 9, 2010 8:43 pm

    …but it certainly doesn’t help!

  356. d1島 June 9, 2010 8:45 pm

I find it interesting that one fly in the ointment is the idealogues at UC_Berzerk-ly standing so strong in opposition to Baylor because of the theological ties at the school.

They’d put ideology ahead of pragmatism despite the dire circumstances of the state?

  357. OldDiver June 9, 2010 8:47 pm

USC really needs to join the Big 10. Ohio State and Michigan have been in trouble before without consequence. Remember the Fab 5 and the hundreds of thousands they took in payoffs? Things will only get worse if we have super conferences. They will be too big to fail and too big to stop. Kinda like the investment bankers.

  358. Garret June 9, 2010 8:51 pm

    d1shima,

The thing is, the Pac-16 TV network will make more money with Colorado than with Baylor. Sure some at Cal won’t want Baylor in the same conference, but that argument might not fly if Baylor brought in $20 million more TV money for the conference. However, Baylor brings *no* additional money for the Pac-16 TV network and Colorado brings in a big TV market.

Judging by the agreement that the Big 10 network has (set up by the guy who is setting up the Pac-16 TV network), the TV network should get about $1 for each TV viewer in Colorado and the subscribers will also add to the commercial revenue. For the Big 10 network, commercials apparently make 3x to 4x the money from subscriber fees…so, getting into a different state is a big deal!

So, Cal isn’t just objecting to Baylor’s theological ties. They may be bringing up the theological ties because it may costs their school millions of dollars every year.

  359. Garret June 9, 2010 8:52 pm

“may costs” should be “may cost”

  360. Garret June 9, 2010 8:55 pm

Note that USC already punished itself for its men’s basketball violations. The NCAA might add more penalties of course, but these penalties were a good start.

    * Vacate all wins from the 2007-2008 season.

    * Return all money from the Pac-10 and NCAA Tournaments from the 2007-2008 season.

    * Not participate in any postseason tournaments this season including the Pac-10 Tournament.

    * Reducing one scholarship this season and next season.

    * Reducing one coach allowed for off-season recruiting this summer.

    * Reducing the number of recruiting days from 130 to 110 for the 2010-2011 season.

  361. Garret June 9, 2010 8:56 pm

USC announced those penalties on January 3 of this year, so they knew that they were going to be hit hard by the NCAA and they seemed to be trying to get the NCAA to take it easy on their football team by punishing their basketball team.

  362. A-House June 9, 2010 9:15 pm

Is it really fair, but then who said anything in this world is fair, for the NCAA to punish a school for the transgressions of another school?

I know I’m still pissed that UH volleyball team got the “yank” because the NCAA wanted to send a message to all the “big time” schools for their basketball recruiting “wanderings”. Guess the 1,000# dog can do anything it wants, but it don’t make it right!!!!!!!!!!!!

  363. d1島 June 9, 2010 9:17 pm

    Garret,

Of course the 20 schollies and reduced contact hurts but it doesn’t seem like anyone is leading the story with anything but no post-season for two years.

This year’s Dillon Baxter is gonna listen to the schools who are saying, “You won’t be in a BCS game this year or next with SC, but you could be there playing with us!” That kid is not worried about SC losing 20 schollies because one of the 4 or 5 they have left are gonna be for him anyway.

  364. 200. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:18 pm

    Garret..

Couldn’t USC work with UH to change their 2012 schedule to play in Hawaii instead of vice-versa… after which, couldn’t they then add another game to their schedule.. albeit late, and make more money there? Then try to use the trip to Hawaii as a recruiting enticement, recruit in the islands defraying some of the costs with the team trip, schedule a late 13th game as a pseudo-bowl game? Don’t know if it would be worth it for them… but who knows?

  365. 200. madeinhawaii June 9, 2010 9:19 pm

  366. Old Diver June 9, 2010 9:25 pm

USC imposing penalties on themselves is like a bank robber returning the money after getting caught and expecting to get a pardon for admitting guilt. Of course this is exactly what Michigan did and the got away with a slap on the wrist.

  368. Expat June 9, 2010 9:32 pm

I am curious as to when the scholie losses will hit USC– will they have to rescind current scholarships or will it be phased in? Kiffin is not exactly famous for staying within the lines in terms of NCAA regs — you would have to think that he will manage to get SC sideways while they are on probation which could mean even more sanctions.

Garret is right about Baylor — they don’t bring much to the party. Somehow they need to be playing SMU and Rice in the rich private Texas mini-conference.

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out with regard to some of the traditional rivalries.

  393. Garret June 10, 2010 3:33 am

If the NCAA wanted to *really* hurt USC, they should do this and let their players transfer out. There would be a lot of excellent players (freshmen and sophomores especially) who would be available. The 2-year bowl ban may hurt recruits during their redshirt or freshman year, but it REALLY hurts the younger players on their team.

Maybe UH could end up with a player or two? Maybe if a lot of players transfer out then USC wouldn’t have the depth that they had in the past…that could show up in a certain season opener?

If the NCAA committee on infractions recommends it, any USC football with two years of eligibility or less could transfer without sitting out a year because of the two-year bowl ban.
I think USC will face more potential headaches with freshmen than veterans who are already comfortable at USC and really only lose a bowl game at the end of the season. Why bother transferring if you are already a starter and start over at another school?

  394. Garret June 10, 2010 3:36 am

    madeinhawaii,

If the bowl ban is for 2010 and 2011, USC can play in a bowl in 2012. Why would they need to change their schedule in 2012? If the Pac-16 has a championship game, USC cannot play any late regular season games in 2012 or any other year after that.

  397. Garret June 10, 2010 3:40 am

The scholarship limitation probably won’t result in current USC players losing scholarships. It will just reduce how many recruits they can take in each year. So, instead of have 25 recruits maximum, maybe they end up with a maximum of 15 recruits per year.

Having a player go from an athletic scholarship to an academic scholarship brings in immediate national scrutiny by the media for any school under scholarship limitations. You have to be a serious conspiracy theorist to think that USC would try that…it would be so obvious when that happened and would bring an immediate death penalty!

  398. WATCH GODGIFU June 10, 2010 4:50 am

Besides what Garret said on the academic scholarship ploy, academic scholarships are open to all applicants. Usually you have to be the type that has all A’s in high school, high SAT scores or some sort of extraordinary talent (throwing a football accurately for 90-yards is not one of the talents!)

So if it went to a football player with average grades, there would be such a hue and cry that NCAA would be the first to come in with a rubber slipper – admitedly it would take maybe 4-years to do something – but something they7 wilool.

Wow, Colorado to leave Big 12 for Pac 10

  402. Garret June 10, 2010 5:28 am

The LA Times has an article about how things could all turn upside down in the next few days!

Of course, as fast as all these expansion plans came together, they could fall apart. There are reports the Big Ten has offered Notre Dame one last chance at becoming its 12th member, and if the Fighting Irish say yes then the offer to Nebraska probably will be yanked off the table.

  403. Garret June 10, 2010 5:28 am

There are also reports that Texas legislators might demand that Baylor be included in any expansion involving Texas. If that happens, the Pac-10 could scale back its plans to 12 teams and court Colorado and one other school, perhaps Utah, out of the Mountain West Conference.

  404. Garret June 10, 2010 5:30 am

    Maryland to the Big 10?

Everybody knows that an expansion is coming, but so far the Big Ten has denied every report released. I’m not going to believe that all of these reports from around the country from nearly every media source, including ESPN. This is not the first time Maryland’s name has been mentioned in the conversation of the Big Ten expansion as ESPN basketball analyst Andy Katz toyed with the idea before. But this is definitely the first time that it has been brought up this seriously.

I could understand the draw for Maryland to go into the Big Ten, they’re basically guaranteed roughly $6.5 million a year just from the Big Ten Network. It also puts them in a much more esteemed conference.

It also makes sense why the Big Ten would want Maryland. By adding Maryland to the Big Ten they can expand their media market into the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area, which could bring in huge bucks for the conference.

The Pac-10 has confirmed on its website that Colorado has joined them! That kind of takes the suspense out of Colorado’s press conference that is coming up…

The Pac-10 confirmed the deal Thursday morning with an official announcement on the conference Web page that said, “The Pacific-10 Conference announced today that the University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted an invitation to join the Conference as it’s 11th member, the first new member since July 1, 1978.”

In the release, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said, “This is an historic moment for the Conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth. The University of Colorado is a great fit for the Conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10.”

The release also quoted CU chancellor Phil DiStefano and president Bruce Benson.

“On behalf of The University of Colorado students, faculty, alumni and fans, we are proud to accept this invitation from the Pac-10 and join the most prestigious academic and athletic conference in the nation,” DiStefano said.

Texas Tech has confirmed that they will be going to the Pac-16.

When Nebraska leaves the Big 12 Conference this week, so too will Texas Tech, Texas and Texas A&M, a high-ranking Tech official confirmed Wednesday.

The official said those three Texas universities have vowed to stick together through any major conference upheaval, which — according to multiple reports from reputable newspapers across the country — Nebraska will trigger this week.

The University of Texas, along with Tech and A&M, should soon be leaving the conference to join the Pacific-10 Conference, according to the source.

  411. Garret June 10, 2010 7:07 am

Oklahoma officials have confirmed that they are going to the Pac-16.

One high-placed OU source indicated to The Oklahoman that the Sooners were headed West.

“Load up on your sunscreen,” the source said, referring to the sunny climates of Pac-10 cities.

The Big 12 schools apparently would have to pay a $10 million buyout to leave the conference, unless nine schools vote to dissolve the league.

Getting the votes could be tough, though, with Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor all expected to vote against dissolution. Missouri, which might not get an invite to the Big Ten, could join them as well.

  412. Garret June 10, 2010 7:15 am

It looks like Missouri will *not* be invited to the Big 10, which means that the Big 12 might be able to save itself by decimating the MWC.

The Missouri Tigers could be left behind in the conference realignment. The latest, always changing reports, Missouri might be left out of the Big Ten expansion.

As for Missouri, Brown reported one source said: “Missouri is getting cold shoulder from Big Ten.”

But the Jayhawks, Wildcats and Cyclones shouldn’t worry. Here’s what Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe told the New York Times:

“I think there’s a strong, strong interest to ensure that the Big 12 exists, regardless of any kind of possible departures,” Beebe said.

“It’s certainly been the most challenging time of my career,” he said. “Whatever occurs, and hopefully it will be a good result, I will have wanted to have left it all on the field. There’s no stone left unturned or bullet in the chamber. I’m doing everything that I can.”

  414. Garret June 10, 2010 7:17 am

The Des Moines Register suggests that the Big 12 could save itself by taking only one school from the MWC (TCU, needed to help the Texas market). Could the Big 12 pillage the Big East and C-USA instead of the MWC?

The Des Moines Register suggests the remaining Big 12 schools — Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor and possibly Missouri — band together to rebuild the Big 12. The new conference would include Cincinnati, Louisville, TCU, UTEP, SMU, Houston, Rice and Memphis (if Missouri bolts).

Garret— most of the formatting HTML tags do not work in this blogware…it hasn’t since it started a couple years ago.

The only text tags that do work are: blockquote, bold, italic, strikethrough (del), (maybe tt), and the anchor tag.
Jason has a tutorial and list of tags that do work at:
    http://www.jnagaoka.net/tsai-ko/xhtml.pdf

For general info, here is a list of all HTML 4.1 tags and how to use them.
    http://www.w3schools.com/tags/default.asp

Test of the tt or monospaced font 🙂

  426. SteveM June 10, 2010 8:24 am

Looks like the tt or monospaced font does not work here.

Note that if we are moved to another blog software, this could change–or not work at all. We’ll see.

    Garret…
re: USC playing in Hawaii instead of at home in 2012…

I suppose, since the Bowl ban is for 2010 and 2011, it would seem fruitless to try to swing USC to play in Hawaii instead.. but will they still be bowl contenders in 2012 with the new conference alignment and with 20 less scholarships? Or will it take them a couple more years to rise back up to the top of their half of the conference?

  428. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 8:35 am

How do the sanctions work, anyway? If USC appeals it, are the sanctions in effect until their appeal is heard and decided upon, or are the sanctions postponed until their appeal is decided upon?

  429. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 8:36 am

I didn’t know about Jason’s updated list till he emailed me last night.. thanks Jason.

  433. mctruck June 10, 2010 8:54 am

Well, one thing for sure is that if there is a big12 after the smoke clears, the league office should me moved north where most of the teams will be situated.

  434. mctruck June 10, 2010 8:55 am

    me=be….oooops?

    and happy birfday mr. Bulla!!!

  440. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 9:08 am

I guess it doesn’t work anymore?
    This is a special font

  441. cavewarrior June 10, 2010 9:14 am

BSU should consider Big12 now for instant BCS stardom…

  442. Don Weir June 10, 2010 9:16 am

Just received a call from a friend (source) in LA. Several interesting stats:
USC season ticket sales down 40%+
USC v UH ticket sales stalled at 800

Rumor circulating among 200 + reporters at Heritage Hall is that USC wants out of the UH game.

  443. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 9:21 am

Don? Are we talking about this upcoming game? Kind of late to be backing out.. isn’t that a forfeiture rather than a cancellation at this late hour?..

  444. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 9:41 am

Wow… 40%… doesn’t their stadium sit something like 100,000? So that’s 40,000 phone calls they gotta make ASAP!… eek!

  445. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 9:45 am

If USC drops out of the schedule, our UH football SOS will probably drop down to last place in Div 1. Yikes!

  446. Kekoa June 10, 2010 9:50 am

Bulla ~ You shua you not related to Mrs. ‘C’??? She get *choke* bertdays her house!

(Facing Ewa Beach and *waving* to da Colomaohana!)

  447. d1島 June 10, 2010 9:51 am

“the NCAA was so mad at Kentucky, it gave Cleveland State two more years of probation.”

USC is so mad at the NCAA, that it’s cancelling it’s game with Hawaii?

    It always rolls downhill……

    🙄 😈 🙁

  448. (Jesse) James June 10, 2010 9:53 am

Good morning Tsaikos…hope all is well and that everyone has a great day….

  449. madeinhawaii June 10, 2010 9:54 am

    d1

With so few pre-season ticket sales to the UH game.. I think they are afraid that the lackluster support will demoralize their team. Especially if they can’t hear the fans at all.

  450. (Jesse) James June 10, 2010 9:54 am

Oh..and Happy Birthday to brother Bulla…getting younger every year…

  451. Kekoa June 10, 2010 9:57 am

The evil empire is going down. This is where having all the money in the universe will not help them. Gotta learn to be humble and play fair in the sandbox. Shortcuts and skirting the rules should apply to them as well UH.

  452. jm2375 June 10, 2010 9:59 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

USC wants out of the UH game? Wot, dey sked? 😆

  453. Da Punchbowl Kid June 10, 2010 10:02 am

Reminds me of that old expression “SMUed”. Wonder what good getting out of the UH game will do them?

Who thinks that Caroll’s departure mighta had something to do with all this?

  454. Da Punchbowl Kid June 10, 2010 10:04 am

Thanks for the “fly-on-the-wall” view, Don!

  455. Bruddah Cuz June 10, 2010 11:33 am

My first time on StarAd. Always remember your first!
I tinking about all dis conference movement. I tink dis all because da BCS schools like cut da small kine schools from da BCS money. Big boyz like make mega conferences with big playoffs, den da conference champs play da conference champs. Going be like da old days, mega-Pac 10 vs mega-Big 10 on Jan 1. SEC vs ACC? Big boyz not going need BCS anymore. All da profits going stay in da mega conferences. When dey do this, small kine schools going play in da BCS bowls, but das going be like da NIT compared to da mega-conference championships. What you tink?

Plan your hunt. Try to think where the deer would be and concentrate your efforts on those areas. For example warm sunny faces in cold weather, areas with a lot of feed etc.
