Going green

After meeting with Under Armour officials today, head coach Norm Chow confirmed the Warriors will be receiving new green jerseys for their home games this season.

There will be few design changes to the predominantly black jerseys the Warriors wore last season.

Chow said the team also will receive so-called “Wounded Warrior” uniforms that will be used for a military-themed game.

Chow and athletic director Jim Donovan are in Maryland as part of Under Armour’s sponsorship meetings.

Chow gave strong reviews to the crab cakes.

    That should boost team morale.

  2. HiloBilly May 18, 2012 7:37 am

I may as well be FIRST!!

  3. HiloBilly May 18, 2012 7:38 am

Well, 2nd to GG is good, too! Have a great day all….

  4. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 7:38 am

    haha, nah, i am #1.

  5. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 7:40 am

Now the big question: Where can we get good crab cakes in Hawaii?

  6. nankuli May 18, 2012 7:40 am

I hope we get green jerseys and green pants that match the turf at aloha stadium. We could be the Boise of the pacific.

  7. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 7:41 am

ST: crab cakes at Morton’s Steakhouse are da best. Huge chunks of crab with less breading.

2nd best are the ones at JJ’s Broiler in Lihue, Kauai.

  8. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 7:43 am

    Gigi:

And we all know who owns JJ’s.

  9. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 7:44 am

    Nanakuli:

Good idea, except you’d have to heavily wash the jerseys to get that faded-green look the turf will no doubt become.

  10. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 7:46 am

I remember it was only a couple of years ago players would grumble about the “slow” turf at the Ching complex. The turf was newly installed, and the blades were still long. And then time and sunlight too over …

  11. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 7:49 am

Doesn’t it all depend on the type of shoes worn, too?

  12. Bryson May 18, 2012 7:53 am

I still hope we get matte black or matte green helmets for at least 1 game this season…

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid May 18, 2012 8:00 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    New unis guud.

    Crab cakes guud.

Matte black or green helmets guud.

    Have a guud Friday, all!

  14. bleedgreen May 18, 2012 8:04 am

Any idea what shade-color green they’re considering? I would like to see a brighter green than the dark-green of recent years.

  15. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 8:05 am

Sometimes, dark green looks like black.

  16. 3-Prong May 18, 2012 8:07 am

Crab cake sandwich from Cheesecake Factory pretty good.

  17. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 8:09 am

I think it’s going to look like those uniforms they displayed last year. But for some reason, they never got them. Or if they did, they didn’t wear them.

  18. mctruck May 18, 2012 8:22 am

    Sky-green.

  19. mo808 May 18, 2012 8:29 am

  22. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 8:39 am

ST: what color are the Wounded Warriors uniforms? That should be interesting.

  23. tommui May 18, 2012 8:45 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Concur – the crabcakes at Morton’s are really great!!! Unfortunately no one has taken me there lately!

  24. SteveM May 18, 2012 8:48 am

    Good morning everyone!

ST — I think A-Joe might need the pantone green number for the new jerseys… got? 🙄

  27. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 8:52 am

Tom: Isn’t it ironic that we have to go to Morton’s STEAKhouse for crab cakes? Lol.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

    Happy ALOOOOOHA Friday!

Looking forward to the NaKoa gathering on Kauai on June 8th.

tunalvr is rounding up the troops for the big event.

  29. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 8:53 am

    Gigi:

Actually, they said they’re keeping the Wounded Warrior uniforms under wraps. They also said they won’t be camouflage-patterned.

  30. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 9:01 am

I’m cleaning out my notebooks for the past two years.

I’ve got all of these numbers scribbled down, but no names next to them.

Or if I do have a name, it’s only the first name.

    “Troy.”

    “Bob.”

Don’t know if they’re coaches, recruits or the Oceanic repairman.

  31. Wes'side Warrior May 18, 2012 9:02 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Supah Aloha Friday to you all!

“Wounded Warrior” uniforms? Now THAT piques my interest. Will it be camo? Or the Warrior Green with camo numbers? Black is MIA/PoW. I hope it’s not black. Hmmm…

Crab cakes? I was stationed at Fort Ord, California for a few years. The Monterey area is all about seafood, even with the historic Edgewater Packing Company down the road… which leads me to… Wondering if that restaurant at Pearl Ridge is any good… Monterey Bay Canners, or something like that. Several friends have mentioned that place in the past. I’ve never stopped by there, though.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

    Go, Wahine!

    Go, ‘Bows!

  32. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 9:03 am

    Hee-larious.

SDSU and BSU would go all the way across the country just to be part of a Big East-ACC challenge … in football.

  33. Wes'side Warrior May 18, 2012 9:04 am

And ST confirms that it won’t be camo… see what I get for starting to write, then get distracted by da keiki?

  34. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:05 am

ST: you still got my number in your notebook, or did you look it up in the phone book? There’s just one gigi, right?

  35. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:06 am

WW: Avoid Monterey Bay Canners in Pearlridge. We treated Kekoa to lunch over there, and it was so disappointing.

  36. Wes'side Warrior May 18, 2012 9:10 am

That’s when you know it’s too much, and time for all the stupidity to stop! A true, regional map needs to be drawn up. Insane! All da tv money should go into a pot, and doled out per some formula controlled by the NCAA and mandated by Congress. Leave out shady, backroom, big-time school president meetings, and let them go back to being concerned about ALL of their school’s students and staff. Too simple, yeah?

  37. Tunaluvr May 18, 2012 9:12 am

Come one come all, to this glorious event. Meet the Coach held on Friday, June 8th.

  38. Wes'side Warrior May 18, 2012 9:12 am

Good to know, Gigi. Just weird that I’ve driven by it numerous times… but never felt inclined to stop, for whatever reason. And then, on the other hand, when I see a long line waiting to get into Tony Roma’s… I wait forever for a parking spot!

  39. BigHiloFan2 May 18, 2012 9:26 am

    Howzit Tsaikos everywhere.

ok. da crabcakes picture is good.

a horse under stress would be better.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Happy Friday! One more week of school for Screecher.

Too bad it’s a little too early for Maryland soft-shell blue crab. yummmmm…

  44. A-House May 18, 2012 9:42 am

Summer 1970 – we were at Summer Camp at Vendenburg AFB in Calif. Pea soup at Lumpoc was out of sight.

On trip to Hearst Castle, we stopped at Moro Bay and had breakfast – abalone steak and 2 eggs easy over – yummmmmmm! Also, remember passing Cal Poly San Luis.

  45. Old Diver May 18, 2012 9:50 am

I want uniforms that have legible numbers. These old eyes are causing those numbers to look blurry.

  46. DaveLetterMan May 18, 2012 10:13 am

Because of the complaints of the turf at Ching Field being slow, UH brought in the grounds keeper from St. Louis School to take care of it. Now it’s mowed to the optimal height.

  47. DaveLetterMan May 18, 2012 10:16 am

I can make fun cuz I’m a proud St. Louis graduate.

  50. Derek May 18, 2012 10:40 am

The crab cakes in Baltimore’s inner harbor are very good indeed. I also liked them at NOLAs, Emeril Lagasse’s restaurant in New Orleans. I don’t think I ever tried bad crab cakes.

I hope the UA unis have more tapa design on them.

On another note, I listened to the Hoop Talk earlier this week. I have to agree with Chris Hart. Jackson Wheeler and the attorney had a negative slant about Gib Arnold and the recruits. In fact, listening to them I was getting irritated. They also said re: Joaquim that he might not return for his senior season. I would have hoped for a little more positive spin after a tough season. In my mind, we missed 3 big things last season. Zane Johnson Bo Barnes, and Bill Amis. Johnson did not shoot the ball as well as 2010. We missed Barnes 3 pt. shooting and tenacity, and Amis’ all around consistency (scoring, rebounding, and free throws) was the rock. Put that all together and that’s the difference. But back to the Portnoy and Wheeler, I hope the radio station take a good look at their show. Instead of ripping people, tell them to make some suggestions and how the program can get better. Better yet, get Gib Arnold on the program so he can defend himself, as well as his assistants.

  51. wait a minute May 18, 2012 10:57 am

I could care less what Gib says. I want to see what Gib does.

  52. A-joe May 18, 2012 10:57 am

    17:

Each year UH is given an allotment of credit from UA to use to obtain uni’s for the entire athletic program. Last year the plan was to use a significant portion of credit to get two sets of uni’s for the football team. The black and white sets were decided on to get first. The remainder of credit was used to get uni’s for the other sports. With this years allotment they’ll use a portion of credit to get the green set.

  53. PONO May 18, 2012 10:57 am

JW is just a bitter ex coach. He will have a bone to pick with any UH bball coaches that aren’t named JW or RW.

Not sure if Roy’s in Hawaii has the Shellfish Sampler but the Roy’s in Anaheim and Newport Beach have it and it comes with a broke da mouth crab cake! Along with scallops, half lobster tail, shrimp, and macadamia nut risotto!

    Lets go Wahine!!!!

  99. bleedgreen May 18, 2012 1:31 pm

Outside of Majam, Wahine offense can only be described as meek. Plus, those errors and bobbles. Hope they win, but their play makes me nervous. Not all together.

    Stephen Tsai:

    May 17th, 2012 at 1:29 pm

    Here’s a full-circle sequence:

    Sealii Espenesa chooses UCLA.

    UH then signs Moses Samia.

A year later, partly because of the number of DTs at UCLA, Moala chooses Arizona State.

Now Moala and Samia are at UH.

I guess it would be greater for UH if Espenesa also joins.

Huh???A parable???A riddle???I’m like a dog, sniffing after little crumbs that fall from our leader’s mouth.

    Epenesa! Wow! Only if!

  115. kev-1 May 18, 2012 2:10 pm

Do other teams work with primarily two pitchers like we do? I’m just wondering how fatigued those two are. They are excellent pitchers, but are they over-used?

Good luck in the next game.

  116. NY pake May 18, 2012 2:17 pm

NY Warrior, I once bought a houseboat in city island with the romantic notion of living on the ocean. It was freezing and the boat sank. The seafood there is delicious though

  117. Derek May 18, 2012 2:18 pm

Can’t blame Ricketts. She pitched well enough to win. Wahine couldn’t hit in the clutch, except Majam. Robinson, Iwata, and Aguiree (#3,4,&5 batters) did not do any damage. Wahine should have won in seven. Ricketts ended up throwing too many pitches and got tired. Pagaduan played badly, error, popped up to the catcher 3 times in a row. Aguirre can’t lay down a key bunt situation. Forget today. Focus on tomorrow already.

  118. Warrior Dave May 18, 2012 2:19 pm

    Derek,

I agree. Hope the girls can rebound from this fustrating loss. Many missed opportunities.

  119. jm2375 May 18, 2012 2:23 pm

kev-1 – #118 – a lot of other teams use only *1* pitcher primarily. The softball pitching motion is much more natural than in baseball.

  120. HawaiiMongoose May 18, 2012 2:24 pm

Too much travel, too long on the road. You’ll never hear the Wahine use it as an excuse but it takes a toll.

By the way, Gigi, I had Filipino food today. At Max’s. That cuisine is pretty awesome.

Did you have Max’s fried chicken? I heard its really juicy. I have to go there one day.

  141. Shoko May 18, 2012 3:27 pm

That Max’s is a chain? There’s a bunch all over the mainland, including the Phillipines.

Pastrami Sandwich from Itsu’s in Hilo. Simple, down home goodness. Bliss.

What’s better than a pastrami sandwich from Itsu’s in Hilo?

Answer: Two pastrami sandwiches from Itsu’s in Hilo.

    BIk

  158. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 4:10 pm

    BIK:

Thanks for the tip. I’ve been looking for a good pastrami sandwich, too.

I think it was Lynn’s Deli that used to make pastrami with cream cheese on rye. I’m drooling.

  159. tommui May 18, 2012 4:11 pm

POLYMOM: When did you get back on shore?

  160. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 4:13 pm

There was a sandwich shop in NYC on the corner of Amsterdam and West 119 Street that sold the most delicious pastrami sandwiches ever. On rye or any other bread you chose. Unforgettable.

  161. WarriorMojo May 18, 2012 4:15 pm

What do these past and present UH athletes have in common?

    Jarrett Arakawa

    Breland Almadova

    Randy Inaba

    Uriah Moenoa

    Matt Wright

    Kiran Kepo’o

    Bobby Nash

    Kanoe Kamana’o

  165. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 4:37 pm

    They couldn’t get into Punahou?

    I kid. I kid.

  166. DaveLetterMan May 18, 2012 4:55 pm

They couldn’t get into Punahou but could get into iolani.

  167. DaveLetterMan May 18, 2012 5:01 pm

When in LV we go to Jason’s Deli for hot pastrami on rye. They also have a pastrami/corned beef sandwich I think it’s called the New Yorker.

  168. al May 18, 2012 5:06 pm

mojo…that is simply too simple to answer.

  169. al May 18, 2012 5:07 pm

too bad that the new york deli in kaimuki closed down. you would have loved their mile high pastrami with choice of cheeses, including cream cheeses.

  170. al May 18, 2012 5:08 pm

bik…the one must for me in hilo town is still that homemade style oxtail stew on the corner.

  171. WarriorMojo May 18, 2012 5:08 pm

Yep, Iolani kids who all ended up playing for UH. In fact I would guess that a super high percentage of Iolani kids who are D1 level athletes, end up playing for UH.

Who got away? Not many. Derrick Low, but most people know at least part of the reason why that happened. Years back, Joe Igber played for Cal over UH. Jamie Smith plays B-ball for UNLV.

So I don’t know Epenesa’s present situation at all, but not getting recruited by UH at the time was totally lame.

  172. al May 18, 2012 5:10 pm

    okay…where to go eat tonight?

chinese food is out…had so much of it in the past week.

where is columbia inn when you want a good roast pork n stuffing dinner.

  173. al May 18, 2012 5:12 pm

mojo…but, the hc said he recruited and spoke with all the local kids that year.

  174. al May 18, 2012 5:20 pm

    taro balls or tapioca balls?

  175. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 5:22 pm

I’ve heard many different stories. From someone familiar with the process, I was told they did go after Epenesa, but when it was apparent he was going away, they went to the next guy — Samia.

  176. WarriorMojo May 18, 2012 5:50 pm

Hmmm, interesting. I only know what was reported in the media so I don’t know for sure if he was or wasn’t.

Point is, though, as between Iolani and the yellow and blue school, it seems that a much higher percentage of Iolani D1 athletes stay home, so I would think that should be factored into any recruiting efforts. Of course this is all anecdotal and I’m willing to be proven wrong if the facts justify it.

I’m just hoping Mr. Lakalaka is the start of a trend.

  177. PIAA DS May 18, 2012 5:51 pm

Stephen, you’ll never get crab cakes like you will get in Maryland. Md crab cakes are made with fresh blue crabs, not frozen stuff imported or other various crab species. There is so little filling in a Md Crab cake, most others are filled with mayo and bread crumbs. Guess I’ll have to get some this summer when I visit my parents.

  178. kapakahi May 18, 2012 5:52 pm

UH was already too late by the time CL finally called WL in January 2010 (only 1 month before NLI Day)…..after NC had already made personal trips down here to see WL and/or Epenesa (including HHSAA D2 Championship game between Iolani & Kauai)….so UH moved on to Samia….who himself had not been contacted until then.

“These are the facts of the case. And they are undisputed.”

  179. WarriorMojo May 18, 2012 5:53 pm

    Re #177

Interesting, yeah? I’m not going to diss the guy, but it seems like an awful lot of people said that contact with UH was minimal.

That was one of the things that really bothered me since he appeared to be trying to fix that in the first couple of years.

  180. el burro sabio May 18, 2012 5:54 pm

    BIK,

What’s better than two pastrami sandwiches from Itsu’s?

Two pastrami sandwiches and an ice shave from Itsu’s

  181. PIAA DS May 18, 2012 5:55 pm

Moses Samia was offered by UH less than a week before signing day. Had committed to Baylor along with Beau Yap, both changed their minds at the same time to stay home. Good move for UH fans!

  182. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 6:01 pm

What I think is interesting is that by not landing Epenesa — who is very good — it set off a chain of events that led to UH landing two very good DTs. That’s not the way it should work out, but it does show how crazy recruiting is. By the way, the No. 1 target was that Lawrence guy from Aiea.

  183. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 6:03 pm

Beau Yap is going to be very good.

  184. kapakahi May 18, 2012 6:05 pm

    PIAA DS,

Thanks for corroborating the Samia facts.

UH was lucky to get….and now have….both Samia & Yap!….BUT could’ve had others too.

  185. WarriorMojo May 18, 2012 6:05 pm

ST, shows how crazy good the talent level was that year.

Next year is supposed to be even better?

  186. WarriorMojo May 18, 2012 6:07 pm

“IF the top kids from Hawaii only stayed home, we’d be in the Top Ten every year ….”

  187. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 6:09 pm

    Kapakahi:

If UH offered Espenesa two months earlier, would he have selected UH over UCLA?

  188. kapakahi May 18, 2012 6:11 pm

BTW….WL didn’t sound happy with how things are going for Epenesa at UCLA…..now that Bruins changing from 4-3 front under Neiheisel…..to 3-4 front under Mora….which has resulted in Epenesa going from 2nd team DT to now 3rd team NG.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/ucla/post/_/id/10369/ucla-post-spring-depth-chart

Also interesting that UCLA looking to cut 7 scholarships.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/ucla/post/_/id/10393/ucla-must-cut-seven-scholarships

    Hmmmm…..

  189. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 6:17 pm

    Kapakahi:

I remember when Glanville came aboard, and suddenly there were eight nose tackles, which meant Lawrence Wilson didn’t get to play much. But it worked out, somewhat, when Reagan Mauia moved to running back.

  190. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 6:18 pm

    I like Kaumeyer’s system. There’s a nose tackle and a d-tackle.

  191. kapakahi May 18, 2012 6:25 pm

    ST,

Family favored UCLA….so UH probably would’ve had to actively recruit Epenesa from at least early Fall 2009 to have realistic chance. Two months earlier (i.e., November) probably would’ve still been too late. SO…answer would be NO.

  192. Bryson May 18, 2012 6:25 pm

One thing that stood out on Beau Yap’s highlight tape is that he has a motor he just keeps pushing and fighting through the line…

  193. kapakahi May 18, 2012 6:28 pm

Passive and inconsistent recruiting of top local prospects a non-issue with NC.

  194. Ipu Man May 18, 2012 6:31 pm

Hopefully WWIII will not break out this fall until after fb season…

  195. kapakahi May 18, 2012 6:35 pm

    #196,

Beau Yap was finally offered by UH thanks to former UH assistant coach Rich Miano being a true believer and persistently arguing his point to eventually convince others….since Beau was viewed (like Houston Ala before him) as somewhat of a tweener…..between DE and OLB….until his breakout senior season.

  196. Warrior Mojo May 18, 2012 6:37 pm

  198. Da Punchbowl Kid May 18, 2012 6:45 pm

#164 GIGI – I remember that sandwich shop! There is/was a good one on 6th Ave and 45th(?) Street – something Stage – really great. But what I miss most of all were the hotdog stands – Nathan’s were featured and they were grilled, not boiled – crunchy.

  213. Ralph May 18, 2012 8:47 pm

Steve, you are about to embarrass yourself and your family name by going to court, people who normally don’t follow volley shots and the warrior beat will now know what we have all come to conclude, Steve, you are an idiot.

A court appearance will also make your true identity public, now you won’t be able to deny your identity on the forum, and we will see the “real” Steve XXXX step forward with a picture of him in the SA.

I can’t wait for the court date, make our day Steve and step out from the many aliases you post by and show yourself.

  222. Ralph May 18, 2012 9:14 pm

Today was the deadline for the 2012 football season ticket renewal…I guess the numbers weren’t there, UH has extended the deadline to May 29.

  223. HiFlyer May 18, 2012 9:15 pm

    Hawaii down 4-2 b10.

  224. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 9:18 pm

    papajoe:

Don’t think a decision can be made until after a network picks up the USC game. If there are six or fewer football telecasts for Oceanic, the amount of the rights fee can be renegotiated.

  225. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:20 pm

One of the drawbacks of season tickets is the traffic exiting the stadium. I don’t envy people having to drive to Laie after the game.

  226. tommui May 18, 2012 9:21 pm

When it comes to the Bill of Rights, I wish people would read the Federalist papers and the great debates between our founding fathers that took place when they were proposed and adopted.

Before the Constitution (and the Bill of Rights) were ratified by the 13 colonies, we were a Confederation of 13 independent states and much of the rights that we have really was addressing the grievances that we had against the King including the arrest of people that were publishing or speaking against the King and Parlement.

  227. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:21 pm

Hubby’s dream is to watch a UH game in 3-D on TV. Lol.

  228. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 9:23 pm

I find that when I drive to Laie, I’m always following a s-l-o-w vehicle. And when that vehicle makes a left turn, a car scoots into that slot, then goes s-l-o-w-l-y.

  229. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:24 pm

ST: that could have been me. Speed limit is 25 mph on that road. Friends in the car begged me to drive with the flow of traffc which was faster than 25 mph.

OK, everybody, hit yourself on the head with a hammer.

    C’mon.

    Hit it.

    NOW!!!

I always think of that scenario when knuckleheads think I can make people do whatever I say. It’s nice to think I have that power, but judging from the un-dented heads, I don’t.

  232. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:30 pm

I bet that the Celtics and the Spurs will be in the finals. Spurs will be the new champs. They are on a roll.

  233. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2012 9:31 pm

Maybe so, Gigi, but there’s nothing new about that team.

    Lot of old farts.

  234. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:31 pm

    ST: huh?

  235. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:32 pm

Got my boxers, briefs, and Depends, but the piggy bank is balking.

Wassup with the air fares to Seattle? $800???

    What am I overlooking?

Grrrr… got some 7-nt Alaska cruise ships offering $500-600 fares next month. 🙁

  240. wafan May 18, 2012 9:46 pm

    SteveM . . .

Trying to keep out those Hawhyans who continue the lie about Obama’s forged certificate of live birth.

Let them stay in their paradise hawhyan isles.

Where are my teeth and gun, maw?!?! Gonna go fortify the west side of the country!

  241. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:50 pm

SteveM: summer vacation? those alaska fares are way cool.

  242. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 9:52 pm

we probably will stay a few nights at Aulani in Ko Olina. Had to cancel our China trip due to my condition.

  243. SteveM May 18, 2012 9:54 pm

    wafan — think June 2, 9, 16.

When does school get out in WA?

Short drive to Seattle for you…

  244. wafan May 18, 2012 9:55 pm

    SteveM . . .

Our last day is June 20.

Yeah, thanks to 5 snow days.

    Darn that la Nina.

  245. SteveM May 18, 2012 9:56 pm

gigi — probably fares dropping extra low because no one bargain hunters can afford to fly in. 👿

  246. whitey May 18, 2012 10:03 pm

SteveM, am surprised the cruise lines are having trouble with the low fares. They should take a lesson from Mr. Hogan (Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays) when he had problems with the airlines. Why kiss their arse, make your own charter or deals with lessor known airlines. Because of his marketing skills, Hawaii was way ahead.

    Dispatches from Pastramiville:

yes, Manono got a good pastrami. Itsu’s shave ice does go nice with that pastrami. Itsu’s is nothing spectacular. Actually, quite simple. Steamed bun, lettuce, tons of juicy, yummy pastrami and that old school mayo;mustard sauce they would serve with school lunch before time. Best of all, $3 per sandwich. Been that price for years. Simple, but ONO.

    BIK

  248. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 10:06 pm

everything is expensive these days. We were planning to buy a middle seat on the plane so we could sit comfortably with that empty seat between us. It was pretty affordable at a little over $1,000. We were all set to go but then I got sick and had to cancel.

  249. gigi-hawaii May 18, 2012 10:09 pm

Anyway, China is so smoggy. When we were in Hong Kong in 2010, the smog from factories in mainland China was really bad.

DaveLetterMan: Your statements regarding Iolani student-athletes are unfounded and baseless. Are you sure that they could not get into Punahou. Last I checked, it was extremely difficult to get into Iolani. At Iolani they stress “student” before “athlete”.

    BaseB 🙁 ws

  252. SteveM May 18, 2012 11:52 pm

whitey — Actually, I think most cruise lines have deals with the airlines–but just not on every sailing from every port or from all origin cities. I tried pricing the June cruise with air provided by the cruise line, but that came out around $900 (vs. $800+ independent). Sometimes good deals, but you have to purchase a year in advance. Cruise lines offer air and hotel packages too.

A lot of people I met on the local Pride of America cruises came down on cruise line booked air & hotel packages for pre or post stays. From what I saw and heard, the visitors are well cared for in Hawaii…especially the numerous first-time cruisers who come to Hawaii for the first time.

How did I wake up with a headache and a hammer laying next to me?

  254. al May 19, 2012 12:26 am

st…one of my favorite places for a hot pastrami sandwich is the panini grill at the kahala mall. its a stand alone larger than kiosk operation in that courtyard area.

    gotta try that one.

  255. al May 19, 2012 12:27 am

all right, all right…i’ll be the one to ask since you are just dying to tell us.

  256. al May 19, 2012 12:28 am

btw, please tell hubby that attending a game in person is true 3d experience including the smells.

  257. al May 19, 2012 12:31 am

gigi…it is probably better to just fly first class and get all the amenities and a bigger seat to accomodate the tush rather than to sit in coach with the middle seat as a third ticket.

  258. al May 19, 2012 12:34 am

perhaps gigi and hubby would opt for the prince hotels kamaaina specials???

199 nt, minimum two night stay.

choice of a round of golf, tennis time, or dinner buffet for two ($120)

wat you doing up so late?

  267. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2012 2:46 am

Al: We were on the Big Island just last year, so we don’t want to stay there again this year. Somehow, Aulani is more appealing with all their amenities. Yah, $300 per night, but so what?

To get to China, we priced 1st class, business class, and a 3rd seat in coach. Coach was cheapest, so we opted for that (Korean AL).

I got sick with an umbilical hernia. Veddy painful. Had surgery on May 3. Am okay now…I think.
