Going green
After meeting with Under Armour officials today, head coach Norm Chow confirmed the Warriors will be receiving new green jerseys for their home games this season.
There will be few design changes to the predominantly black jerseys the Warriors wore last season.
Chow said the team also will receive so-called “Wounded Warrior” uniforms that will be used for a military-themed game.
Chow and athletic director Jim Donovan are in Maryland as part of Under Armour’s sponsorship meetings.
Chow gave strong reviews to the crab cakes.

Good idea, except you’d have to heavily wash the jerseys to get that faded-green look the turf will no doubt become.
I remember it was only a couple of years ago players would grumble about the “slow” turf at the Ching complex. The turf was newly installed, and the blades were still long. And then time and sunlight too over …

Crab cakes? I was stationed at Fort Ord, California for a few years. The Monterey area is all about seafood, even with the historic Edgewater Packing Company down the road… which leads me to… Wondering if that restaurant at Pearl Ridge is any good… Monterey Bay Canners, or something like that. Several friends have mentioned that place in the past. I’ve never stopped by there, though.

Summer 1970 – we were at Summer Camp at Vendenburg AFB in Calif. Pea soup at Lumpoc was out of sight.
On trip to Hearst Castle, we stopped at Moro Bay and had breakfast – abalone steak and 2 eggs easy over – yummmmmmm! Also, remember passing Cal Poly San Luis.
I want uniforms that have legible numbers. These old eyes are causing those numbers to look blurry.
Because of the complaints of the turf at Ching Field being slow, UH brought in the grounds keeper from St. Louis School to take care of it. Now it’s mowed to the optimal height.
I can make fun cuz I’m a proud St. Louis graduate.

The crab cakes in Baltimore’s inner harbor are very good indeed. I also liked them at NOLAs, Emeril Lagasse’s restaurant in New Orleans. I don’t think I ever tried bad crab cakes.
I hope the UA unis have more tapa design on them.
On another note, I listened to the Hoop Talk earlier this week. I have to agree with Chris Hart. Jackson Wheeler and the attorney had a negative slant about Gib Arnold and the recruits. In fact, listening to them I was getting irritated. They also said re: Joaquim that he might not return for his senior season. I would have hoped for a little more positive spin after a tough season. In my mind, we missed 3 big things last season. Zane Johnson Bo Barnes, and Bill Amis. Johnson did not shoot the ball as well as 2010. We missed Barnes 3 pt. shooting and tenacity, and Amis’ all around consistency (scoring, rebounding, and free throws) was the rock. Put that all together and that’s the difference. But back to the Portnoy and Wheeler, I hope the radio station take a good look at their show. Instead of ripping people, tell them to make some suggestions and how the program can get better. Better yet, get Gib Arnold on the program so he can defend himself, as well as his assistants.
I could care less what Gib says. I want to see what Gib does.

Each year UH is given an allotment of credit from UA to use to obtain uni’s for the entire athletic program. Last year the plan was to use a significant portion of credit to get two sets of uni’s for the football team. The black and white sets were decided on to get first. The remainder of credit was used to get uni’s for the other sports. With this years allotment they’ll use a portion of credit to get the green set.
JW is just a bitter ex coach. He will have a bone to pick with any UH bball coaches that aren’t named JW or RW.
Not sure if Roy’s in Hawaii has the Shellfish Sampler but the Roy’s in Anaheim and Newport Beach have it and it comes with a broke da mouth crab cake! Along with scallops, half lobster tail, shrimp, and macadamia nut risotto!

Can’t blame Ricketts. She pitched well enough to win. Wahine couldn’t hit in the clutch, except Majam. Robinson, Iwata, and Aguiree (#3,4,&5 batters) did not do any damage. Wahine should have won in seven. Ricketts ended up throwing too many pitches and got tired. Pagaduan played badly, error, popped up to the catcher 3 times in a row. Aguirre can’t lay down a key bunt situation. Forget today. Focus on tomorrow already.

Yep, Iolani kids who all ended up playing for UH. In fact I would guess that a super high percentage of Iolani kids who are D1 level athletes, end up playing for UH.
Who got away? Not many. Derrick Low, but most people know at least part of the reason why that happened. Years back, Joe Igber played for Cal over UH. Jamie Smith plays B-ball for UNLV.
So I don’t know Epenesa’s present situation at all, but not getting recruited by UH at the time was totally lame.

I’ve heard many different stories. From someone familiar with the process, I was told they did go after Epenesa, but when it was apparent he was going away, they went to the next guy — Samia.
Hmmm, interesting. I only know what was reported in the media so I don’t know for sure if he was or wasn’t.
Point is, though, as between Iolani and the yellow and blue school, it seems that a much higher percentage of Iolani D1 athletes stay home, so I would think that should be factored into any recruiting efforts. Of course this is all anecdotal and I’m willing to be proven wrong if the facts justify it.
I’m just hoping Mr. Lakalaka is the start of a trend.
Stephen, you’ll never get crab cakes like you will get in Maryland. Md crab cakes are made with fresh blue crabs, not frozen stuff imported or other various crab species. There is so little filling in a Md Crab cake, most others are filled with mayo and bread crumbs. Guess I’ll have to get some this summer when I visit my parents.
UH was already too late by the time CL finally called WL in January 2010 (only 1 month before NLI Day)…..after NC had already made personal trips down here to see WL and/or Epenesa (including HHSAA D2 Championship game between Iolani & Kauai)….so UH moved on to Samia….who himself had not been contacted until then.

Moses Samia was offered by UH less than a week before signing day. Had committed to Baylor along with Beau Yap, both changed their minds at the same time to stay home. Good move for UH fans!
What I think is interesting is that by not landing Epenesa — who is very good — it set off a chain of events that led to UH landing two very good DTs. That’s not the way it should work out, but it does show how crazy recruiting is. By the way, the No. 1 target was that Lawrence guy from Aiea.

Family favored UCLA….so UH probably would’ve had to actively recruit Epenesa from at least early Fall 2009 to have realistic chance. Two months earlier (i.e., November) probably would’ve still been too late. SO…answer would be NO.
One thing that stood out on Beau Yap’s highlight tape is that he has a motor he just keeps pushing and fighting through the line…
Passive and inconsistent recruiting of top local prospects a non-issue with NC.
Hopefully WWIII will not break out this fall until after fb season…

Beau Yap was finally offered by UH thanks to former UH assistant coach Rich Miano being a true believer and persistently arguing his point to eventually convince others….since Beau was viewed (like Houston Ala before him) as somewhat of a tweener…..between DE and OLB….until his breakout senior season.

Today was the deadline for the 2012 football season ticket renewal…I guess the numbers weren’t there, UH has extended the deadline to May 29.

Don’t think a decision can be made until after a network picks up the USC game. If there are six or fewer football telecasts for Oceanic, the amount of the rights fee can be renegotiated.
One of the drawbacks of season tickets is the traffic exiting the stadium. I don’t envy people having to drive to Laie after the game.
When it comes to the Bill of Rights, I wish people would read the Federalist papers and the great debates between our founding fathers that took place when they were proposed and adopted.
Before the Constitution (and the Bill of Rights) were ratified by the 13 colonies, we were a Confederation of 13 independent states and much of the rights that we have really was addressing the grievances that we had against the King including the arrest of people that were publishing or speaking against the King and Parlement.

SteveM, am surprised the cruise lines are having trouble with the low fares. They should take a lesson from Mr. Hogan (Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays) when he had problems with the airlines. Why kiss their arse, make your own charter or deals with lessor known airlines. Because of his marketing skills, Hawaii was way ahead.

yes, Manono got a good pastrami. Itsu’s shave ice does go nice with that pastrami. Itsu’s is nothing spectacular. Actually, quite simple. Steamed bun, lettuce, tons of juicy, yummy pastrami and that old school mayo;mustard sauce they would serve with school lunch before time. Best of all, $3 per sandwich. Been that price for years. Simple, but ONO.

everything is expensive these days. We were planning to buy a middle seat on the plane so we could sit comfortably with that empty seat between us. It was pretty affordable at a little over $1,000. We were all set to go but then I got sick and had to cancel.
Anyway, China is so smoggy. When we were in Hong Kong in 2010, the smog from factories in mainland China was really bad.
DaveLetterMan: Your statements regarding Iolani student-athletes are unfounded and baseless. Are you sure that they could not get into Punahou. Last I checked, it was extremely difficult to get into Iolani. At Iolani they stress “student” before “athlete”.

whitey — Actually, I think most cruise lines have deals with the airlines–but just not on every sailing from every port or from all origin cities. I tried pricing the June cruise with air provided by the cruise line, but that came out around $900 (vs. $800+ independent). Sometimes good deals, but you have to purchase a year in advance. Cruise lines offer air and hotel packages too.
A lot of people I met on the local Pride of America cruises came down on cruise line booked air & hotel packages for pre or post stays. From what I saw and heard, the visitors are well cared for in Hawaii…especially the numerous first-time cruisers who come to Hawaii for the first time.

Al: We were on the Big Island just last year, so we don’t want to stay there again this year. Somehow, Aulani is more appealing with all their amenities. Yah, $300 per night, but so what?
To get to China, we priced 1st class, business class, and a 3rd seat in coach. Coach was cheapest, so we opted for that (Korean AL).
I got sick with an umbilical hernia. Veddy painful. Had surgery on May 3. Am okay now…I think.
