Riley Wallace tells us that “Jim (Donovan) is really working it.”

Translation: Donovan is being proactive in the search for the next UH basketball coach.

Instead of just waiting for the applications to trickle in, the UH AD apparently also has been asking around to see who’s available. And that’s the way to go, considering that few head coaches with jobs are going to actively apply. It also can help a coach’s status to know that he is the subject of inquiries.

UH owes itself the best candidate. That’s why it’s important for the job search to be a two-way street.

I guess I’m part of this high speed day and age… I don’t like seeing our programs fall, but I get excited by coaching searches. Same with recruiting. I don’t get bummed when our top players graduate cause then we get to see how some new guys work out.

    Football, Football. I need football.

I read somewhere that a certain D-1 football coach would want to have a Spring football game…………..with another team! They do it in most other sports and call it “exhibitions.” Why not some Spring football? apparently, the rules for Spring still apply — no hitting the QB.

    Na Koa Update
Mahalo to Slugger, Donna G, and Jeannie PinPin for helping with the mailings yesterday. Those of you Na Koa members waiting for your membership card and other benefits, it will be in the mail today. We were waiting on the new Na Koa hats and Brandon Kop called to say they will be delivered today.
Look for Na Koa members stylin’ in the new caps: all black, UH logo on the front, Na Koa website on the side.
PSA’s are being developed so look for these spots on local stations in April. Faces to look for include Joe Onosai, Mike Biscotti, Alex Kaloi, Michael Carter, Rich Miano, El Rollo, and others.
*** Na Koa was contacted to join in with 30+ players from the very early 60’s as they hold a reunion at the STL Alum house on Monday. Pictures of former players with names will be found on the Na Koa website afterwards.
Former players are starting to come back to UH in large numbers and provide support. Mahalo to Mike Perkins and Ron Reynolds of the Na Koa FB Alum committee for making great headway in this ‘inclusion’ effort.

JD is doing the right thing by sending out feelers to check on candidates. It would be easy to just sit back and see who applies, but this hire is far too important to just do that.

  35. al March 12, 2010 10:03 am

what with so many non-bcs schools making it to the big dance of college bowl games in recent times wouldn’t it behoove the bcs folks to have either the wac and/or mwc form a super conference with all the would-be-contenders?

    boise st
    fresno st
    hawaii
    nevada

    air force
    byu
    tcu
    utah

    add another team?

that way the bcs can have better control of things? keep more of the money? i don’t know.

perhaps it serves the likes of the non bcs teams to come in the back door often such as boise st has.

Was off-blog literally the entire week. Got called into a Monday afternoon meeting…the original Gov’t rep. that was selected to oversee some testing in Michigan fell ill, and they needed a replacement. Needless to say, I was on the first flight out to Detroit the next morning, spent three days out there, and just got back.

For a detailed description of my experiences in trying to make arrangements for the Tsai-kos to hold a party at Murakami Stadium using the Budweiser Big Blue Bullpen Tent, please read Post #232 in yesterday’s blog.

If a company affiliated with the Tsai-kos had been willing to step forward to cover the costs, then the event probably would have happened – especially since DrDoc and I would not be there ourselves.

Again, does anyone want a free baseball ticket to the Saturday, March 20 game against Air Force. Protector is taking the first ticket.

We will also have a pair of volleyball tickets and a pair of baseball tickets to give away on Friday, April 2nd, and Satuirday, April 3rd – the final double-booked weekend for this season.

    CRW,

The meetings with 2 of the companies went *very* well and the 1.5 days of seminars and meetings with the National Science Foundation were sometimes educational and sometimes quite boring. For example, listening to timekeeping procedures and audit rules for 2 hours was not exactly my idea of fun…

I might end up needing to go to DC quite often if things work out with either of the big companies I met with. Unfortunately, that means that I have even more work right now…but the payoff for my company could be immense.

  54. Derek March 12, 2010 11:26 am

The Boise St. coach, Graham, got fired today so we are not along. I gotta say one thing about Boise. The don’t like losing and they don’t waste time either. Boise St. has a first class basketball arena and they have hosted NCAA basketball Regionals before. Their program has the makings of being like a Gonzaga, given a great coach. That’s the same thing that can happen here too. The right head coach can turn around a program very quickly. I really believe that. In college basketball, getting a very good coach is everything. Why? It is a given that a lot of coaches knows their Xs and Os, but the difference is that the very good coach gets Division I talent and evaluate Division I recruits. A lot of coaches are just as good a John Calipari as far has actual coaching, but Calipari is a great recruiter. Bill Self is a great recruiter. Jaime Dixon is a very good coach, but I think he’s a good recruiter, not a great recruiter. The college ball is all about having good guards. If you look at every top 25 team, the top players on those teams are guards. Why? Because the guards handle the ball the most and the guards are mostly the best shooters, both from the line and also at the line. I guarantee that if we get good guards in Hawaii’s program we will have a very good basketball team. We don’t need 7 footers. 6’8″ or 6’9″ are tall enough. 6’5″ to 6’7″ for small forward and/or power forward are good enough as well as swingman.
Point guard can be as short as 5’8″. It is all about finding the talent.

  56. Ralph March 12, 2010 11:39 am

K State is in the top ten for the first time in decades, its their guards who run the team that makes them go. the big men plant themselves in the paint and control the boards and score a lot in the paint on put backs. All 5 play defense, physical style. That’s what UH could use, a true PG who can handle the ball, shoot, drive, shoot off the dribble, have a complement #2 guard who can also shoot and drive, the two will extend the defense, then the big men can work for position in the paint and score from close range. We have nothing like this at UH for years. A C and Alika did their thing and UH won with this guard oriented tandem.

  57. Kazz is learning to hate Troy Softball March 12, 2010 11:53 am

A wise man once said: “You are never as good as you think you are when you win and you are never as bad as you think you are when you lose”.

Troy gets another shot at the Wahine tonight and at least their coach and some of their fans must still be fuming about the “officiating” on Wednesday night. As the non-replay sports like baseball and softball go, it’s hard to catch things as they happen live. Well, thank goodness for DVR and K-5 replays.

In two instances where Troy’s coaching staff were dumbfounded by calls that led to a walk or an inning ending out by UH, the replay I watched last night proved the officiating to be CORRECT. Sorry Trojans, you were “warned” right?

    1) In the second game with 2 outs, a Trojan hit a soft lofting pop fly that landed fair but Taualii at 1st snagged it just short of the foul line and the K-5 replay shows this. The result? UH escapes an inning. For Troy it was a phantom foul ball that Taualii snagged. NOPE.

    2) Again involving Taualii. In the second game she swung on a pitch that the Troy catcher attempted to snag high but the ball nicked off the webbing of her glove and ended up being a wild pitch with UH runners advancing bases. Troy argued for a while that Taualii foul tipped it. Replay shows Taualii never touched the ball. CLEARLY.

Regardless, Troy will be amped up and ready to go and their ACE of ACES will pick up where she left off. My hope is that our ladies have had the time and now the confidence to know what Williams will be bringing. No more surprises. NONE. Prior to the game, Troy was a bit under the radar and while Coolen and staff were concerned with the # of strikeouts Willams had prior to Wednesday night, they weren’t sure of what she was doing to garner those #s. Well, now they do. That’s the beauty of these tournaments, you get a second shot to get to that ace pitcher. Then again, Troy’s looking for the same opportunities too.

Same thing with LMU. We pounded them at their field and we know what they have.

Tonight should be a good night for the Wahine. SHOULD. 😯

LET’S KEEP THE BATS ALIVE, PITCHING TIGHT, AND THE ERRORS NON-EXISTENT!!!

    GO BOWS!!! WIN THE NIGHT!!!

  58. sjmacro March 12, 2010 12:18 pm

Kazz: I dvr’d the game too. Maybe we can send them a copy. 🙂 Also interesting to note Lori Santi picking up the “we were warned” comment about officiating; kind of intimating the timing of that comment was bush league. See you there before we catch the other Trojans–sj

  59. Ralph March 12, 2010 12:22 pm

K State Na Wahine not having a good year in basketball. They’ve won at least 25 games the last 5 years but not this year, struggling big time. They even lost to UH in the Las Vegas classic earlier in preseason.

  60. A-House March 12, 2010 12:24 pm

    Kazz:

Sad thing about the Troy coach is that when she gets back she will “blab” her head off and all her friends and associates will believe her and the Hawaii officiating “myth” lives on. I’m sure that she will not mention that her players had 2 errors and could not field 5 ground balls to the infield that led to 11 or 12 UH runs in the first inning. BUT, she will pound the “fact” that an official made the wrong call on her pitcher which by the way was the correct call. Also, she will not mention her very loud (we could hear it from the 3rd base grandstand seats – even Papa Leahy and crew heard it from the press box) tirade about “we heard abut Hawaii officiating before we left”.

Same thing happenens with football. Guess the BIG 10 coaches are embarrased in losing to Hawaii and will make every attempt to explain, with excuses, why they lost. they cannot accept the fact that Hawaii played well, they didn’t, and reason why they lost. Every conference, to my knowledge, bitches about officiating regardless of sport. So sad!

  61. Ralph March 12, 2010 12:27 pm

If UH mbb played with as much energy and hustle as Nebraska and K State Na Wahine are putting out on court; spacing and driving off picks, shooting 3, and playing up tempo, I believe coach Nash would still be the coach.

  62. NorthShoreFan March 12, 2010 12:28 pm

Funny yeah, the mics picked that up very well on K-5, yet we cannot recall hearing it live at the stadium.

    this is getting fun.
every day a new hc candidate surfaces that could trump the one from the day before.

an intriguing candidate is joe bryant. although has not been around the college game, he could hire an assistant to handle the administrative stuff and just focus on recruiting and player/team developement.

as far as recruiting goes, what kid or parent would not invite kobe’s dad for a visit?
not to mention that he is a well known basketball figure in italy.
can he develope my son? again look what he did for kobe.

yup, this recruitment is getting to be a lot of fun.

Too bad for Kaufman. Knowing the kind of competitor she was in volleyball, I can imagine she can’t be that much different in track.

Either way… HAWAII IS PROUD OF YOU!!!

glad to hear the JD is going coach hunting. hopefully we actually give the job to someone that has the qualifications instead of just someone that has ties and has been around waiting!!!

  87. al March 12, 2010 1:57 pm

kaufman made her first attempt at 6’2 3/4″ while patterson cleared that height on her final attempt.

these were the only two at this height. patterson made 6’4″ on her first attempt while kaufman was unable to clear that marker in three tries thus taking the second place.

    eh, no shame girl!

d1…sad that one of our Sons of Hawaii gets himself into this kind of mess. No focus on what’s really important.

Keep the head up Amber. ..This meet is just one of many more to come.
Train, Train Train…We’ll see you in the Olympics!

  91. Derek March 12, 2010 2:38 pm

    Did you notice:
    1) That Hawaii’s baseball pitchers rarely, if any, throw change ups. Watch the game closely. I should have asked Don Robbs on the Bobby Curren show, but I didn’t call in. Anyway, to me, the basic pitches for a pitcher are fast ball, curve or slider, and change up. The change up can be a very effective pitch because it gives the pitcher the option of throwing at 3 different speeds. Fast (fashball), slow (curve/slider, and slower (change up). By keeping the batter guessing the batter cannot sit on one pitcher. Now, this assumes the pitcher can throw strikes, which sometimes is a problem for UH. The question I have is the coaches teaching the pitchers to throw a change up and if not, why? If they do, I think the pitching staff will be a lot better.
    2) The Troy pitcher (Williams) throw the breaking ball a lot against the Wahine. The Wahine batters wil adjust today by sitting on the breaking ball and hit it out of the park a couple of times. Williams rarely threw more than 2 fastballs consecutively and I think Coolen will get the Wahine bettter prepared. Wipe out!
    3) Not much news lately about Warrior football. I think it’s time to rev it up right now.
    4) Masoli was suspended for the entire 2010 season. Isn’t he a senior? Does he have a redshirt season? If not, wouldn’t his career be over? Man, there is a lot of drama in Eugene. Phil Knight must be pulling hair…if he has any left. I think things are a little out of control at that program.
    5) Men’s volleyball came back in the second game of both road series to split. They showed a lot of resilience and character. Just keep improving with each game and things will bode well.
    6) Dave Shoji’s new Associate Coach Scott Wong is particularly helpful in getting the Wahine block better. That’s the thing that has hampered the Wahine from going further. If the Wahine can win the blocking match up they can possibly go all the way to the NCAA championship. Good choice.

  92. Kazz March 12, 2010 2:55 pm

Let’s see Mr. Knight buy his school out of this situation.

  93. PowderPuff March 12, 2010 3:39 pm

Aloha Friday, almost-pau hana laugh: just got a call from a guy at the hotel who asked me if I am going to the UH-USC game tonight, and I said no. He said, “Why not?!? Those are some beefy lookin’ dudes…wow!” I think he had too much fun watching them around the resort. 🙂 Sheez, sounds like HE wants to go to the game. Well, if he only read the blog…he could’ve entered for tickets. Oh, he still can…I should tell him. Haha!

  97. wafan March 12, 2010 4:36 pm

Really? Will Masoli be treated like Blount? How soon will he be back on the field? Or will Kelly and the UO actually enforce the suspension?

Things are not right down in Eugene.

    Go Beavs!

Watched the first Wahine game until it got wayyyyyy out of control and then we headed across the street to watch the First of Four against USC. Got there at the top of the second just as Nate Klein left the mound with some sort of injury. HUGE rowdy crowd – even in the early innings.

Hope that Jim Donovan talks to coach applicants about how the fans will support teams who play to win rather than not to lose.

Actually, tonight’s game was classic BOZOBALL that Coach Les put together a kazillion years ago – walks, passed balls, errors (other team’s), wild pitches, and itsybitsyeensyteensyweensy bunts. Haven’t seen anything like this for years.

In case you didn’t read it earlier: For a detailed description of my experiences in trying to make arrangements for the Tsai-kos to hold a party at Murakami Stadium using the Budweiser Big Blue Bullpen Tent, please read Post #232 in Thursday’s blog.

Again – is Sunday’s fundraiser actually open to the general public? Would like to support it if at all possible.

What happens if JD selects a coach whos team is still in the running to get an NCAA bid to the big dance???, being that time is of the essence wouldn’t that create a very tight window for recruiting if there will be anytime at all???, or does that mean that whomever it is that is selected will turn on a dime so to speak and go into recruiting mode pronto???

Good morning Whitey! Good morning Wafan!

Boy that game against SC turned into a good old fashioned beat down in late innings!

  214. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:40 am

    Bulla-
Please tell me that you’ll be buying minced garlic…

  215. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:41 am

You missed a great couple of innings d1-san!

  216. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:42 am

And I thought I went sleep early last night!

  217. wafan March 13, 2010 6:42 am

A fine morning to you, DPK.

Mmmmmmm, roasted garlic in spaghetti sauce.

  218. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:43 am

    Got the blog to myself….
    should I streak?

  219. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:44 am

I stand, er, sit corrected! Howzit Wafan! 😆

  220. wafan March 13, 2010 6:46 am

Gosh, the prediction is opening day tickets for the M’s will sell out in one to two minutes. Folks have been camping out on the sidewalk at Safeco Field since Thursday morning.

It would be awesome if the same could happen for the Warriors.

  221. wafan March 13, 2010 6:48 am

So, will bread (toasted, garlic, sticks) be available for tomorrow’s spaghetti feed?

DPK make sure you folks have some so can “sample” the sauce. HA!

  222. wafan March 13, 2010 6:53 am

One of the local high school football rivalries up here is called the Spaghetti Bowl. The local service club sponsors it as a spaghetti-feed fund-raiser. Last year they served over 1,000 slurpers at $10 a plate. Dunno their overhead but they must have been able to raise a decent amount.

  223. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:54 am

    Wafan,
I believe that multiple samplings are critical when cooking vegetarian spaghetti. HA!

Having a radio to listen to the Basebows will help the work go easier.

Maybe some ice cold “refeshments” too… 😆

  224. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2010 6:56 am

Okay, time to go take my morning waddle, er, I mean walk! Back in a bit.

  225. LizKauai [iMac] m/ March 13, 2010 6:58 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Have a WONDERFUL weekend, erryone!

  226. wafan March 13, 2010 7:02 am

I thought all spaghetti is vegetarian.

    The difference is the sauce.

Apolo Ohno is running a contest of some sort where the winners go to Hawai’i with him.

The girls used to wild and crazy over him. Not any more, though. Now it is JR Celski’s turn.

Randolph, from DC, is the only female varsity football HC in an American high school. Her fiance coaches for a rival school.
