    coach gib

welcome aboard. i especially was moved by the excitement in your voice during your first press conference. love to hear the infusion of enthusiasm from you.

realistically, do you feel that you have enough time and contacts to salvage this recruit class?

do you have a laundry list of prospects ready to go?

also, will you be honoring all returnees and the one commit jordan coleman’s scholarships?

do you also plan to retain one or two of the current asst coaches/grad assistants/admin support staff to ease the transition?

    mahalo in advance.

  4. al March 21, 2010 12:28 am

northshorefan….yah, the selection is growing on me.

  5. al March 21, 2010 12:34 am

    coach gib

tell us about your wife and children.

when will they be making the move with you?

any basketball players in the ohana?

punahou has two soph 6’7″ guys who look pretty good, hopefully, you will take a look at them. its been a long time since we have had any punahou basketball players.

in fact, the football team has one of the greatest high school basketball players who probably could have cracked the starting lineup at manoa this year. oh yeah, he hails from the same high school as you and the president.

  6. Ralph March 21, 2010 12:46 am

    Coach Gib

do you have a timeline as to when you will be able to name your assistant coaches.

  7. 99club March 21, 2010 12:46 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Coach Gib, 2 seconds left and you have a 3-pt lead. The other team is bringing the ball upcourt to take the last shot. Do you foul before they have a chance at the 3?

  8. 99club March 21, 2010 12:48 am

Coach Gib, your favorite plate at L&L is…?

  9. Ralph March 21, 2010 12:49 am

    coach Gib

do you have a strong background in defense or mindset of playing a physical man to man defense, and do you plan on recruiting an assistant coach who can complement your game planning on the defensive side.

  10. Ralph March 21, 2010 12:53 am

    coach Gib

is your uptempo game plan guard oriented, with 2 quards, or 3 guards? or do you prefer an untempo game and getting the ball into the paint?

  11. ai-eee-soos March 21, 2010 12:54 am

    any Warrior football news ?

  12. PowderPuff March 21, 2010 1:27 am

Welcome, Coach Gib! I would ask a question, but my basketball knowledge is quite bad…so I’ll sit back and watch the show.

Thanks again to all the Tsaikos who were a part of my over-the-hill celebration. And seeing al at Happy Day Dim Sum was TRULY a highlight today…nice seeing you, sir!!! 🙂

Congratulations to Coach Wade and the MVB team for the exhilarating win tonight over LBSU. Go get ‘um and beat up on the Waves!!!!

  13. protector March 21, 2010 2:01 am

Congrats to the BaseBows and the Warrior VB team. Great Wins!

  14. 22Tokyo March 21, 2010 2:07 am

    Coach,

    First of all congratulations….

    Three questions….

Taking the next three years individually, what are your expectations for each year and what should we expect from the program, under your guidance, over each of the next three years.

What’s your measure of success for each of the next three years. In other words, what do you need to see happen to consider each year a success.

    Good luck….

  15. SteveM March 21, 2010 3:27 am

    Good night everyone!

  16. hilosupaman March 21, 2010 3:34 am

Coach, I just want to congratulate you and say welcome home! I love your passion… I to dream for a job in sports, hopefully for Hawaii. It is always good to see a dream fulfilled… especially a island-boy!

Although I agree that Hawaii has passionate fans and tremendous support, it is my opinion that this is now YOUR TEAM. It is our job as fans to support you and the players.

Again, WELCOME HOME AND CONGRATS… even tho we are in the middle of March madness I look forward to next season!

  17. mctruck March 21, 2010 4:53 am

    Coach Arnold…..

What’s the chances of changing the team name from rainbows to WARRIORS!!??….like our football team.

  18. wafan March 21, 2010 5:51 am

    A glorious Sunday to everyone!

  19. wafan March 21, 2010 5:51 am

    Ooooo, top 20, no less.

  20. NYUH March 21, 2010 6:04 am

Punahou huh, so does this mean the President is going to help with recruiting?

  21. Pauoa Boy March 21, 2010 6:11 am

Coach Gib, welcome to the Warrior Nation…

I like what you said about recruiting quality players and not settling for mediocre guys. I felt our talent levels have dropped off significantly these past couple years. Good luck to you in the hunt. I love the predator attitude to go out and look for quality not quantity!!!

Question: With a little over 20 days to get cracking on the recruiting front. What positions are you targeting right away? What do you feel based on your offensive and defensive schemes are the type of players you will need to go and get to make this happen?

  22. Bulla March 21, 2010 6:19 am

Let us all give thanks for the blessings around us

  23. Pauoa Boy March 21, 2010 6:19 am

    Coach Gib…

I’m also with mctruck on this one…

Would you consider making a name change to just the Warriors instead of the Rainbow Warriors? Our team needs more of a fierce identity and well Rainbows are better suited for our Wahine, what you think?

  24. d1島 March 21, 2010 6:47 am

    Great Morning All!

Terrific wins by BaseBows and VolleyBows.

Was wondering while I was walking over from the Les to the Stanley if it should be SOP for UHAD when there is a situation like last night, where one event ends while another is still ongoing, that an announcement might be made to actually encourage the fans to crossover and support the other team?

There were 2000+ BaseBow fans who could have swelled the support for the VolleyBows and may have made a difference in ending the match in 4 instead of 5.

    Have a terrific Sunday erryboddy!

Welcome to the Ohana Coach Arnold!

    HiHo….

  25. warriorbacker March 21, 2010 6:51 am

USC had a forward just leave the team, will you considering bringing him along to UH?

  26. whitey March 21, 2010 6:55 am

    Good Sunday morning Tsaikos.

  27. Kekoa (iPhone) March 21, 2010 6:59 am

Welcome aboard coach Gib. Your attendance & intro to the baseball fans was impressive last nite.

Q: What are your immediate plans for the team that you have inherited?

Q: What teaching or training method will you employ to try and motivate this team?

Q: Have you had success with turning a team around and playing up to their true potential?

Q: How does your wife feel about your sudden noteriatey?

Thanks for allowing us to find out more about our latest edition to the Warrior Nation.

    GO WARRIORS!

  28. Kendall March 21, 2010 7:10 am

Congratulations Coach Arnold, from day 1 of Nash’s firing I really had hoped that you would be the one to get the job.

Question 1: Were you the lead recruiter for Leonard Washington to USC?

Question 2: This past season you were recruiting a bunch of players for USC, will you continue to pursue these same players for Hawaii?

Question 3: College of Southern Idaho has produced some solid prospects, one of their wing players will be signing with Duke, but they got a couple of other players that are solid D1 caliber (including a big man from Senegal), would you be tapping into your old stomping grounds for prospects? Do you still have connections there?

  29. Kendall March 21, 2010 7:17 am

I’m sorry coach, a couple of more questions:

Will you be pursuing some of the prospects the old coaching staff have been in contact with? (They have this big man from Las Vegas’s Findlay Prep that they have been pursuing)

Coach, you may want to look at Compton Centennial where there are two guards that are interesting prospects.

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid March 21, 2010 7:54 am

    Gee willikers-

Welcome aboard Coach Arnold. Like everybody else here, you’ve made a great first impression on me. My esteemed fellow posters will probably ask the cogent questions, so I’ll just bid you welcome and best of luck!

  31. chawan_cut March 21, 2010 8:01 am

i am in agreeance with mctruck and pauoa boy with the name change. i’m a long time fan but i think a change is needed.
i listened to your press conference yesterday and when you said you want to run a NBA style offense, what did you exactly mean? uptempo? agressive?
thanks and welcome to the ohana!

  32. haka March 21, 2010 8:04 am

    Aloha Coach Arnold,
What’s the story, if any, behind the name “Gib”?

  33. A-House March 21, 2010 8:21 am

Welcome to the UH family, Coach Arnold!

Since your “hiring”, have you contacted any potential recruits and visa versa?

  34. Kekoa (iPhone) March 21, 2010 8:23 am

May I take the liberty of asking one more question coach Gib?

Have you ever heard of the Albert Schweitzer Basketball Tournament?

This tourney is the largest in the world outside of the USA for young men between 17 – 19. Many NBA and European stars such as Magic Johnson have been participants. 16 teams from around the world are invited, with many more anxious to receive an invite. The U.S. Team has won 10 of the 25 tourneys. Greece, Austrailia and Yugoslavia have bumped the U.S. squad down to 3rd place or worse lately. A sign that the quality of players in the global community has vastly improved.

Final Q: Would you consider expanding your recruiting network to include international prospects?

  35. Kekoa (iPhone) March 21, 2010 8:28 am

DPK ~ Did you include me in your *steem* group of fellow fans? 😎

  36. Stan March 21, 2010 8:29 am

    Coach Gib,

As a coach, are you similar or different from your father? Is there anything that your father did as a coach or said that has stuck with you?

Excited to see what’s the come in the future with you and the UH men’s basketball program. Congratulations.

  37. Old School Dave March 21, 2010 8:48 am

Coach Arnold: Congratulations on your appointment and welcome back to Hawaii. I’m curious to know what your recruiting focus will be in your initial year? Ideally, most coaches would like to build a program with high school players, but given UH’s geography (I know it’s a tired excuse of sorts), will you being going after more JUCO players in your first and maybe second seasons? Given your coaching background as a JUCO HC and Div-I assistant, perhaps you could give us fans an insight as to your opinion on high school and JUCO players and how they fit at a Div-I program.

    Mahalo and Good Luck!!

  38. Pauoa Boy March 21, 2010 8:53 am

Did the chat with Coach start or no, I cannot see anything…

  44. LizKauai [iMac] m/ March 21, 2010 9:09 am

So far, I’m impressed with Coach Gib. Watch his hands…

  45. gmahoney March 21, 2010 9:14 am

I noticed his hands too, who does that remind you of?

  46. Pomai March 21, 2010 9:29 am

Start stop start stop start stop, you would think by now two years down the road that they could put on the show with out all the probolems.

  47. LizKauai [iMac] m/ March 21, 2010 9:35 am

His hands tell me how he is feeling and also tell me he is a going to be a demonstrative coach. He is going to SHOW the guys what he wants. His whole body communicates straightforwardness. He’s not hiding anything on purpose. Compare with ST’s body language… bwahahaha!!!

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid March 21, 2010 9:35 am

    Kekoa-

    You top the list! 😆

  49. LizKauai [iMac] m/ March 21, 2010 9:36 am

Pomai- I think that is your connection. My feed is smooth except for one glitch.

  50. wafan March 21, 2010 9:46 am

  51. Pauoa Boy March 21, 2010 9:50 am

    Was live.. now pau show.

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid March 21, 2010 10:01 am

Not you, Kekoa, the new coach!

  55. wafan March 21, 2010 10:01 am

Well, that would explain why no glitches. HA!

He is a good interview. Very open body posture (body language) presents as having nothing to hide. Quick thinker which bodes well for the team — hopefully it translates into game-time adjustments on the fly for the players.

  56. papajoe2 March 21, 2010 10:04 am

he sounds sincere and good. i can’t help it but, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” we’ll just wait and see. I’m looking forward to better things. good luck coach gib. i truly hope you bring this program back to respectability and championships.

  57. wafan March 21, 2010 10:05 am

Had to have been one of the longest WB shows if it started on time. ~1:15 in length. Good stuff.

    Good luck to Coach Arnold!

Got the end. Now to try and catch the beginning and middle. Kind of like how some read a mystery.

  58. papajoe2 March 21, 2010 10:07 am

wafan. it started late. don’t know what time, but at least 15 mins. maybe longer.

  59. wafan March 21, 2010 10:16 am

    papajoe2 . . .

    Thanks for the heads up!

  60. wafan March 21, 2010 10:25 am

Dang. Replay is a misnomer. Still (might be a better name). More breaks and pauses than playing. I give up. The HA wins.

  61. LizKauai [iMac] m/ March 21, 2010 10:30 am

And now the fog has lifted.
Calvin From Kona is the new UH basketball coach.

  66. papajoe2 March 21, 2010 10:51 am

too bad kekoa. was a pretty good interview. i liked how he explained that he still has ties to the JC that he coached before, which is in the same conference that the Bows got some talent from, like Ostler, and others. He also explained his ties internationally, like Senegal, Europe, Australia, etc. and will recruit world wide.

  67. papajoe2 March 21, 2010 10:53 am

Thanks PowderPuff and the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

    Hi guys!

OK, does anyone have a still intact bracket? Nova loses, Twerps lost, but that wasn’t an upset. What’s bad was it was crybaby Mich St. I guess that’s why they call it March Madness.

Great time at the vb game as usual. Stretch and A-joe in great form with Kazz adding to the fun. Sorry guys if your ears are still ringing. Should we sit another row back? 😆

  77. Kekoa (iPhone) March 21, 2010 12:02 pm

Jmxxxx ~ Several noise complaints in my emails and text msg about keed. One in particular from the FAA. It seems the pilots complained of strange shreiking noises over their headsets while trying to listen to the instructions from the tower.

Hi-Flyer told me that he’s making an appointment to see an audiologist on monday.

Sisto needs a good outing this afternoon. With Moore and Walters probably out and Capaul pitching tomorrow, bullpen might be a bit thin unless Little and Kuroda regain their form.

  83. Vonappen March 21, 2010 12:40 pm

Replay of the Warrior Beat Show is ALWAY S seems to be unviewable due to horrible bandwidth streaming and frozen expectations. Why even offer it with your bandwidth restrictions? It just frustrates your audience. Give it up!!!!!!!

  84. Annoddah Dave March 21, 2010 12:40 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Was quite impressed with the interview, very relaxed, very casual, very insightful. Many thanks to ST and DM. Coach Arnold, I think will have a favorable impression of the local media. I cannot fathom how some of the so called fans keep bringing up his father’s failure to get take the program anywhere. I think he was too nice a guy as the head coach. No doubt he tried but did not have those leadership characteristics that create an environment of excellence and productivity. The same can be said of Bob Nash. Leadership is a tough trip that is why there are so few great ones and many, many managers. There is a saying that leaders manage people and managers mange systems. I believe that Jim Donovan and the committee saw the leadership qualities of Coach Arnold. Some comments about the committee not being qualified because no real “basketball” names were evident…goes to show what people know. Head coach responsibilities are more about leadership of staff and players. The committee was composed of leaders and they if anyone, can recognize the essential characteristics of a potential leader. Technical skill is acquired, leadership skill is inspired.

  85. el guapo March 21, 2010 12:43 pm

Oops, Capaul pitching today, Sisto tomorrow. Same thing still applies though.

  86. Ralph March 21, 2010 1:04 pm

Another big East bb team bites the dust, Xavier over Pitt, 71-68. Only Syracuse and West Virginia remain of 8 Big East entrants. K State to take on Xavier in the sweet 16

  88. A-House March 21, 2010 2:46 pm

I am not a follower of “March Madness” – don’t really know why.

But, what struck my interest this year is the “placement of teams” in the 4 brackets as the NCAA basketball committee sent teams from the East Coast to the West Coast and vice versa.

Now, that is a lot of teams having to travel across the “continent”. However, the NCAA VB committee will always fall back on 9/11 and economics to keep teams as close to each other as possible therefore making Hawaii travel to the Mid-west and East to play in sub and regionals.

Make sense? Not to me!! Yea, yea always beating a “dead horse” – at least the horse won’t bite back!!

  89. Da Punchbowl Kid March 21, 2010 2:48 pm

Thanks PowderPuff and the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

  90. wafan March 21, 2010 2:55 pm

    A-House . . .

It is the NCAA. They do not have to make sense to anyone else.

Of course, the amount of cash each sport makes might have something to do with it.

  102. Garret March 21, 2010 4:02 pm

    A-House,

TV pays billions for the men’s basketball tournament about basically *zero* for the volleyball TV rights. So, one tournament has money to cover all travel expenses and the other does not. I don’t see how we can blame the NCAA for this…the public has decided what they want to watch on TV.

To give you an idea of how much money the men’s basketball tournament makes, this should interest you:

The deal has three years and $2.131 billion remaining.

So, the NCAA will get more than $700 million each year from the TV rights for the basketball tournament…and they are thinking about opting out of the contract because it appears they can get *more* from ESPN!

The WAC and all other conferences make a lot of money from the tournament–the money is split up and given to the conferences. This is why men’s basketball is IMPORTANT to an Athletic Department. The Big East had great NCAA tournament success between 2001 and 2006, so their conference got $14.85 million in 2007…the 8 conferences who did not win a first-round game in those 6 years got a little more than $1 million each.

The wins a team makes in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament count for *6* years. A run deep into the tournament brings in *huge* money every year for 6 years…we are talking a total that is much, much more than a UH and BSU made by getting into BCS bowls.

The WAC had two teams in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament this year, which is great for the conference. Unfortunately, neither team won a game…if either won a game or two that would have been big money for 6 years.

  103. Garret March 21, 2010 4:05 pm

The other reason to cheer for WAC teams in the NCAA tournament: the money is split equally between all schools in the conference! So, if a football team makes a BCS bowl, they keep a large part of the money they generate…but when a basketball team wins NCAA tournament games and brings in huge money for the conference, every school gets an equal share.

  104. expat March 21, 2010 4:13 pm

The weird thing about the WB show is that if you watch a replay from the beginning it plays fine (at least for me.). Join it in progress and the stream is unwatchable.

There was that question about Hawaii being in ghe middle of the Pacific. Another way to look at it is that no one is closer to Australia, China, and other eastern countries. Play to your strengths.

  105. 22Tokyo March 21, 2010 4:29 pm

Just tried watching the WB show. I must have joined it in progress because it’s unwatchable….the starts and stops drove me crazy…

    I can feel #84’s fustration…….

  106. Stephen Tsai March 21, 2010 4:31 pm

    No. 83:

Just had a flashback with a “vonAppen” saying it’s not my fault.

I don’t know computers, so I’m not sure what the problem is.
But Gib was pretty good today.

  108. Stephen Tsai March 21, 2010 4:35 pm

Anyway, if you can get through the freeze-frames, coach said some pretty interesting thing about his offensive philosophy and the eight-second theory. He also went into detail about the NBA-style offense he preaches. It’s pick-and-pop, not pick-and-roll.

I might be getting too old to howl until 0150…

  112. Jason March 21, 2010 4:51 pm

I’m trying to watch it from the start now …

  113. Jason March 21, 2010 4:53 pm

    Still choppy for me. 🙁

  114. 22Tokyo March 21, 2010 4:58 pm

No luck for me watching from the start…freeze frames galore…

  115. Pomai March 21, 2010 4:58 pm

Garret so if a team wins the NC they don’t get anything extra in $$$$$?

  116. Garret March 21, 2010 5:23 pm

    Pomai,

Both teams in the championship game make the same amount of money, just like in football.

  117. Garret March 21, 2010 5:24 pm

After my past frustration with the WB replays and the reports earlier in this blog, I’m afraid to try to watch the show. I remember how frustrated I got before and how much time I wasted trying to make sure the problems were not on my end…

  118. Jason March 21, 2010 5:46 pm

It’s restarting right now, if you want to try again. It did get a little bit better …

  119. Jason March 21, 2010 5:50 pm

It’s running really, really smooth right now. *knock on wood* I don’t know if it’s because I restarted the broadcast, or because I’ve been trying to watch it for the past three hours or so. 😀

  120. Jason March 21, 2010 6:04 pm

And now I’m having problems, starting right after the Brandon Jennings discussion. 🙁

  121. Slugger March 21, 2010 6:14 pm

Thanks PowderPuff and the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

    Kekoa,

I went home after the MVB game.

    jm2375,

Was that your keed shreiking last night? I heard it on the replay last night. Remind me not to sit with you if she’s there. I sat in front of a teenage girl screeching at a MVB game once. That was enough.

  122. Jason March 21, 2010 6:16 pm

Oh no, Slugger isn’t one of those people telling folks to sit down and be quiet, is she? 😯

Well, the replay is okay now for me. Sporadic glitches, but I get the picture. Or is that me subconsciously piecing it together after three or four replays?

  123. 22Tokyo March 21, 2010 6:39 pm

I thought I’d give it another try but no luck….I’m waving the white flag….I give up…

  124. Slugger March 21, 2010 7:02 pm

    Jason,

Nope, I don’t mind sitting with the rowdies. Last night I was sitting next to a teenage son (not screaming) and his Dad who would keep yelling, “Roof, roof, roof”, even when it wasn’t a block, but a kill. It’s just that a young girl’s shreik is awful to sit in front of.

  125. Slugger March 21, 2010 7:06 pm

The crew wasn’t that rowdy at the BaseBows game today, though. Mahalo for the ticket, Stretch!

  131. RedZone March 21, 2010 8:13 pm

I had problems with the feed early on so I switched browsers and it worked better.

  132. Garret March 21, 2010 8:23 pm

    al and jason,

The trouble is that some of us cannot struggle all day to try to see the show. It is so frustrating to experience the choppiness and all the other problems, and I simply do not have time to deal with that.

Today I spent the day at Disneyland with my family, which was great but tiring. Our annual passes will only work for 1 more weekend day and then we won’t be going to Disneyland for a long time, so we didn’t want to miss today. After the kids went to bed I had to work…I can take 30-60 minutes or so off for the show, but I cannot try over and over when I have work that has to get done.

Yesterday I drove 2.5 hours each way to spend time with my Aunt who is not in good health…they brought her home to make her more comfortable than she would be in the hospital. I also had to explain things to my 6- and 5-year-old daughters who definitely knew that things were not normal, but they were so pleasant and kind to Aunty that I was happy they got to see her again. That is another reason why I’m just not in the mood to deal with problems viewing the show.

Once or twice per show is all I can try anymore…the Advertiser IT people really need to fix this situation.

  133. 22Tokyo March 21, 2010 8:51 pm

Thanks Al…I’ll give it another go in a couple of hours. I got to run off to a dinner in Rappongi and will try again when I return.

  134. Kekoa March 21, 2010 9:03 pm

22Tokyo ~ Isn’t it great how all the good nitespots are in the Rappongi distruct? The U.S. Embassy was prolly positioned because of it’s proximity, and I for one, really took advantage of it!

Now that you’ve settled into the change from London to Tokyo, how do you like the way things are done in Japan? Fast moving society huh? The food has to be the biggest improvement over the Brits cooking!

  135. Stephen Tsai March 21, 2010 9:06 pm

OK, I tried to watch the replay and it sucks.
At least the hosts were handsome …

  136. Kekoa March 21, 2010 9:28 pm

ST ~ Maybe you should invite the guests to our cc and conduct the interview before a live audience. Let the expert Tsaiko photographers tape the session and put it online.

  137. 22Tokyo March 21, 2010 9:29 pm

    Kekoa,
Yes Rappongi is an awesome part of town…especially if you don’t speak Japanese. Nothing against the Brits and London but most things are 100% better here in Tokyo…it’s an easy place to live, the food is great and it’s safe here, crime is very, very rare. I do miss the London summers though. Temperature wise, the London summers were cool, very rarely hot, and the sun would set around 9pm. Tokyo summers are hot and muggy. You can break a sweat standing in the shade. Also in London I was able to catch live pro and college sports…here, nothing…zero.

  138. al March 21, 2010 9:31 pm

i guess i got lucky on my third attempt to access the chat. that time it went really smoothly.

  139. al March 21, 2010 9:36 pm

my best wishes to gib arnold.

coach mike Hutcheon of Air Force came into Murakami with a 65-245 record at the Academy. Tough sell to recruit bb players but its another sport that gives the students an outlet to participate in D1 sports.

  154. al March 21, 2010 10:26 pm

don’t forget that at the air force academy a young man gets a free education, an opportunity to serve and protect our nation. they can also walk away later as an officer and a pilot leading to a very lucrative career later as well.

Arnold mentioned the 10 day wait period for the bb assistants job, well hopefully UHAD office already posted the job opening to expedite the hiring of Arnold’s assistants.

  159. Ralph March 21, 2010 10:37 pm

Al lots of ball players with superstition, therefore, they do what they do so they won’t jinx themselves.

  160. Ralph March 21, 2010 10:38 pm

It’s part of the mental game preparation, staying even keeled and focused, not worrying about extraterrestiral demons affecting their game.

  161. al March 21, 2010 10:39 pm

it would be a nice story book ending if the gibber proves to be just what this spiraling basketball program needs.

i used to be a supertitious baseball type. but, then one day i couldn’t find my lucky socks and we still won. then the next game i found them and we lost..

i learned that superstition is a figment of your imagination fueled by your lack of ability and preparedness.

  163. al March 21, 2010 10:45 pm

  164. Slugger March 21, 2010 10:47 pm

When I attended the WB interview with Davone, one of the guys told me that the server & source of the broadcast is actually on the mainland. Gannett HQs?

I have found, in the past, if you can catch the video once it starts, it plays smoothly. But it sounds like that is not true today.

Since the archived interviews are played on demand, perhaps the interview of the day should be immediately added to the archived list. It might present a problem with numerous people trying to access it simultaneously, though.

  165. Ralph March 21, 2010 10:49 pm

why weren’t all positions posted at the same time?

  166. Ralph March 21, 2010 10:50 pm

  169. Ralph March 21, 2010 11:03 pm

Jordan Coleman, HS, Calabasas HS. ESPN insider rated 80, quick, plays with passion, but not a good shooter, huh!, Scout rates him 1 star, MaxPreps show him scoring 19+ points per game, not shabby at all, with 5.5 rebounds. I wonder what kind of shots ESPN is referring to, outside shot, 3 pt range, shot off the dribble, did he score most of his points in the paint and free throws?

My Road Runner (cable) service has been up and down all afternoon. Very irritating…especially when in FB. It has been going down around 10-15 times a day for 2-15 minutes since January.

I wonder if there is a correlation between the Road Runner customers and those having trouble seeing the broadcast. Sporadic ethernet-to-internet connection will play havoc on streaming video.

SJSU DE was not able to run at SJSU’s Pro Day on Friday so he apparently will participate in UH’s Pro Day.

Defensive end Carl Ihenacho, who is still recovering from a knee surgery that took place in January, was unable to participate in any drills. He made an attempt to run the 40-yard dash, but scouts eventually told him to stop trying and allow his leg to heal.

“I was at about 60 percent today, so I did the best I could,” he said.

He said he hopes to be able to participate in the University of Hawaii’s Pro Day, which will be held April 1 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Check out the student athletics fee that Florida International students pay…

FIU students, through athletic fees, shoulder a bigger proportion of the athletic budget than at any other school in its conference, the Sun Belt. Those fees are among the highest in the nation, averaging about $350 a year, depending on a student’s course load.

Some at FIU think the fees are over the top for a place that is still largely a commuter school and has spotty attendance at sporting events.

Mark Rosenberg, FIU’s president, said the high fees are an unfortunate necessity as the university raises its profile and broadens its mission.

“Athletics give a university an opportunity to make a statement about who they are to a wider population,” he said. “Nothing brings alumni back like athletics. It is a major part of the university’s identity.”

George Mason was a little-known, albeit sizable, state university in Northern Virginia before the school made a Cinderella run to the Final Four in 2006.

The Patriots’ success on the hardwood spurred huge interest in the university. Robert Baker, the school’s director of the Center for Sport Management, found that Mason earned an estimated $677 million in free media that spring.

Increased exposure translated into a spike in admissions inquiries by a staggering 350 percent. Also, out-of-state applications increased 40 percent, while the total freshman applications ballooned 22 percent from the 2005-06 academic year.

BSU’s coach is going to visit with Oregon and Oklahoma to learn how they do certain things. He already had a visit with the Texas coaches this offseason.

Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said Thursday that he will visit Oregon and Oklahoma for professional development during spring break, which is March 27-April 4.

Both teams are practicing during Petersen’s visits. Boise State has picked up three of the biggest wins in school history during Petersen’s tenure against those two teams. The Ducks are known for their uptempo practices and the Sooners have one of the top programs in the nation.

“I’m really interested in how Oregon practices,” Petersen said. “And I just think Bob Stoops has done such a great job at Oklahoma over the years — he’s got his formula on success. I just have a bunch of questions. And I want to watch how they practice.”

Part of Petersen’s professional-development time this year will be spent on researching how to hire the right coaches. He has filled the two openings that have come up on his staff with friends Chris Strausser and Bob Gregory.

Eventually, Petersen figures, he’s going to have to branch out. He says he got “lucky” when he hired his original staff and wants more skill to go into future decisions.

“I just know the reality of the world we live in,” he said. “One of the things I’m really trying to research is how to continually hire the right guy when maybe you haven’t worked with them before. … I’m continually looking at it and reading and talking to guys.”

  179. Garret March 22, 2010 5:00 am

JJ is doing *6* camps this summer–Dallas (2), Houston, Austin, west Texas, east Texas. I wonder if UH’s coaches could do camps in Southern California and Northern California? Maybe in the Washington area due to Chris Tormey’s connections?

    Great Morning All!

    Congratulations Al!

Hopefully, Coach Arnold is able to find some success in the next 3 weeks on the recruiting trail.

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo….

  181. jm2375 March 22, 2010 5:59 am

    Morning Tsai-kos!

FYI – Fla International is the state university in Miami. If you can believe it, their in-state tuition is less than UH, so the $350 athletic fee is pretty steep in proportion of tuition. But then again, Miami U is around $35K.

Go Bows! Have fun at the baseball game, al-san.

  182. Manoa March 22, 2010 6:14 am

Hope they improve the streaming. There is a hang up somewhere. But later around noon, it worked pretty well– audio at least was smooth without too many glitches.

Maybe when they archive, they can break it up into segments just doing it in two parts would help.

Maybe the HA could work out an arrangement with hawaiistreaming.com for the feed. Their technology works very well.

  185. expat March 22, 2010 7:14 am

I surmise that once the video is shot it is handed off to livestream for retention and playback. The HA just embeds the video. I was having the same trouble watching the replay directly from livestream’s site as I was on the HA site.

So, I would guess that there is little that the HA staff can do since presumably they do not directly host the video. Maybe that assumption is wrong, but if is why have livestream involved at all if they are not actually hosting the video?

Livestream is presumably based on the mainland and I was having issues streaming it from here in Portland so it isn’t just an issue of mainland hosting affecting Hawaii playback.

The video is encased in Flash, which may be part of the problem. Flash is widely used of course but can have some issues.

HA (understandably) wants to maintain control of the video playback to maximize advertising but they may need a new partner as it doesn’t seem like livestream is doing a good enough job.

  186. Pauoa Boy March 22, 2010 7:23 am

    Ralph #169…

Just got done watching Jordan Colemans highlight videos. From what I’ve seen he is rangy with good length. Obviously on the thin side, but nothing a strength and conditioning program and some Muscle Milk can’t handle. His ballhandling needs to be refined as the competition he was up against was subpar and played no defense. In college he would get picked left and right. He has a decent set shot but I can tell he’s more of a slasher get to the rim type of guy which is good. He’s got pretty decent hops when he gets off the ground too. Not much of a jump shooter I don’t think but if he can get to the rim with his length and occasionally pop 3’s coming off screens and stuff he’ll be alright. He can work on his jump shot of course but he seems to have a decent stroke when he’s set. To me at this point a redshirt year to bulk up and work to refine his game will do him good. He could be a decent point guard but needs a lot of work at this point. One thing I noticed though is he’s pretty smooth the way he plays, kind of reminds me a lil of Scottie Pippen…IMO.

Look at the ad. Unless it’s used, word for word, exactly the same as the last time (to hire Larry Farmer), who’s going to write this? If the new coach doesn’t like the qualifications or responsibilities and wants to change them it requires posting the ad again for 10 days.

So the question is (unless it was exactly same as the last time) who wrote it and how did they know what to write, in a way to best suit the new coach, before March 10?
