Game day: UNLV

LAS VEGAS — We passed the giant tailgate party on Main Street while driving to Sam Boyd Stadium. The place was packed. We’re estimating a few thousand. There were 52 buses rented to bring tail-gaters from downtown to Boyd Stadium.

* * * * *

Josh Rice,  who was raised in Las Vegas, is a UH co-captain tonight.

* * * * *

As part of the budget cuts, UNLV decided to stop offering meals in the press box. While the meals have been tasty — the Rib Crib-catered food at Tulsa games ranks No. 1 — even reporters would choose media guides over meals.

* * * * *

There was quite some activity when the spread dropped, to 4 points, earlier today. It then went back up to 7. That’s some heavy betting action.

* * * * *

After a nearly a week in Vegas, the Warriors are anxious to play another game. The Warriors depart for home at 2 a.m. tomorrow. The early-morning flight will be a regular part of their travel this year. Last year, the Warriors traveled to Oakland after road games, stay in a hotel until the morning, then depart on an early flight to Honolulu. By catching the Vegas flight, the Warriors would avoid the expense of a night’s stay in Oakland.

* * * * *

Happy birthday to my cousin, Shelley (Kubo) Okubo.

I have Directv, which don’t carry Versus, due to,($$$), issues. So, surprise!!??…I think; well, count-down starts and keeping my fingers crossed till then.

    wHITY:

First of all, I strongly support most forms of legalized gambling here in Hawai`i including horse racing although I do I have some concerns about dog racing. I think a lottery and casinos would be excellent tax revenue generators both directly and indirectly.

However, there is a strong well-organized lobby opposed to legalized gambling which claim to represent more than 65% of the state’s voters. This lobbying group is led by the Roman Catholic, Mormon and fundamentalist Christian Churchs – e.g., New Hope, Calvary, Word of Life, etc. They have been joined by secular groups such as the League of Women Voters and by the entire law enforcement community.

Many of the other big players such as the Hawai`i Tourism Authority and most public employee unions are silent on the issue.

Other than folks such as thee and me, there is little in the way of visible l support. As long we don’t organize, then we will never see legalized gambling in Hawai`i – at least for 20 -30 years.

Don’t blame the Legislature for this one. They’re responding to what the anti-gambling lobbyists say their constituents want.

Again, the voices in support of legalized gambling have not spoken very loundly..

  43. Kekoa September 19, 2009 9:47 am

Had a dream about BHF2 giving a “Knute Rockne” style speech to the Warriors. Aftah his fiery sermon to motivate them, one of the players turned to the other and asked, “isn’t that your uncle from Hilo?” The other guy sez, “nah, he’s just some Tsaiko that coach Mack brought in to scare us!”

Worse nightmare?…you betcha! Dey better win tonite, uddawize big Hilo Fan goin’ be on dem like white on rice!

Getting ready to shop ’till we drop for da groceries to sustain some hungry Tsaiko’s on the day aftah da nite before.

    http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/sports/epaper/2009/09/18/0918sparano.html

Head coach Tony Sparano, Sept. 18, 2009
Palm Beach Post(On if spread option college receivers can have success in the NFL) – “Oh, like a [Percy] Harvin type of a player? Well, you know, I mean, I think one of the things I think comin’ out of the spread offense is those type of things – I think that you find a player kinda like [Davone] Bess, okay, whose much further advanced in some situations with his receiving skills and with what he’s seen. You know, I think a lot of times you get into those type of offenses, I mean I don’t know Florida’s offense very well, you know, but I do know some of the things that they do. And, you know, you see some of those type of players that are out there – like Hawaii’s offense for example. You know, I just think they’ve seen a lot more coverage-wise, people are trying to do a lot more to defend them so that they don’t hit ’em with big plays. They’re seein’ double coverage, they’re seein’ these role coverages, things that you might do, you know, to some of those offenses, where I think they’re just a little bit more mature than the guy that’s just out there playin’ in the standard pro offense. You know, where there’s two half-backs back there and they’re gettin’ the ball, and I just think way further ahead fundamentally, you know, in that way.”

Looks like you guys had a good time at the kk last night. Hope everybody remembers to go to the game. 🙄 😆

Have to say, the past few days, the blog has been more like the old days, with the return of old friends like RainbowCliff and the absence of the trolls we’ve had to deal with the past few weeks.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!
    GO PAC-FIVE!

    Oreogon beats Utah 31-24.

  79. Slugger September 19, 2009 12:50 pm

    Oregon 31 – Utah 24 no more streaking………

Found a site to watch the NAU game. NAU over So. Utah 21 – 7. Good site when Weber St. plays NAU at NAU.

  80. Slugger September 19, 2009 12:51 pm

Oops, wrong use of vocabulary. NAU up on So. Utah 21 – 7. Game’s not over yet.

  81. chopsueyboy September 19, 2009 12:52 pm

wonder how good Boise St is since them dominated Oregon

  82. al September 19, 2009 12:53 pm

    keys to the game….

    hang on to the football
    patience on offense
pick up the blitz, it will be coming

    contain the qb’s
    create havoc in their backfield
    don’t give up the “homerun”

win the turnover battles and special teams play.

dunnachie to have his breakout game.
a new star or two is born on defense today
    jovonte will emerge

    …nuff said.

  83. LizKauai (Aspire-LV) Go Warriors! September 19, 2009 12:55 pm

    PROTECT GREG ALEXANDER.

    WARRIORS- IMUA!

  84. Slugger September 19, 2009 12:55 pm

NAU just scored! 28 – 7. This is Jerome Souers last year of his contract at NAU. His job will be open next season. Corey Batoon???? Although, his Dad said he’s enjoying being at Arkansas State, much more of a powerhouse than NAU.

K, need to get some things done before the game this evening.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  85. Jason September 19, 2009 12:59 pm

I thought UW might be able to win this game. Didn’t watch it, but I figured if they couldn’t get 200 yards and a couple TDs from Corp, then it might be a close game. Funny, cause we have a couple UW alumni teaching at MoHS, and all they were talking about yesterday was covering the spread.

  86. Garret September 19, 2009 1:06 pm

We’ll be heading to Cici’s once Mika wakes up from her nap. I was able to gamble for an hour for the first half of the nap and Lori just got back from her hour of gambling. If we’re late that will be because our kids were tired…but I’ll get there in time for the bus at least!

I’m up over $250 this trip…so far, so good! I cannot wait for the game to start, 8pm seems so long from now!

  87. big hilo fan2 is all good in vegas September 19, 2009 1:06 pm

    protect all of Greg Alexander!

make him the star of the cast.

its all on you! each of you.

    Go Warriors!

  89. BowsForever September 19, 2009 1:25 pm

Interesting day in football. Nice upsets for Washington and Oregon (!)

Hopefully the Warriors will continue the “upset” trend. It’ll help if we get 50% or better Warrior fans in the crowd like we usually do!

It’s a bummer that there’s no free replay, but at least we got BC/RK. Wonder if Kekaula will do a little singing this game too. (anyone caught his “let’s get it started” last week? :P)

  90. madeinhawaii September 19, 2009 1:26 pm

SMU up by 11… 4th quarter 11 mins to go.

  91. madeinhawaii September 19, 2009 1:26 pm

Oops 15 minutes to go… heh..

  92. G (China) September 19, 2009 1:38 pm

    game on yet?

  93. labrat September 19, 2009 1:39 pm

QB for USC made a lot of bad throws today. Probably was the difference in the game.

  94. madeinhawaii September 19, 2009 1:45 pm

SMU lead cut to 7… 10 mins left in 4th quarter… still anybody’s game.

  95. madeinhawaii September 19, 2009 1:45 pm

Florida State up 13-7 over BYU… Florida State knocking on the door again… 1st and goal..

  96. Slugger September 19, 2009 1:49 pm

Just saw Kainoa Pe’a on the sidelines at the NAU game.

Go, Greg! And receivers!!! You are so much better than the Oregon team today.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Good luck to all the Tsaikos and Warrior Nation (in their quest for entertainment purposes) and safe journey home after the game…

Busses are here. Gonna load up soon.

  107. FloridaTed September 19, 2009 3:21 pm

JJ is finding out that what was so special in Hawaii is not so easily duplicated someplace else, I almost feel sorry for him, almost…..

  108. Konaboy September 19, 2009 3:29 pm

I don’t :/ But I still like the guy. Anyway it’s GAMEDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you ready people?!!!!!!

  109. FloridaTed September 19, 2009 3:34 pm

    I’m more than ready!!

Big test today. 3-0 sounds real good.

  110. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 3:38 pm

Mahalo to Brew808 for providing brews and bevs. for the busses!

  111. BowsForever September 19, 2009 3:38 pm

Too bad for SMU. They lost it in the end.

I don’t begrudge JJ for leaving though, many changes wouldn’t have happened if he’d stayed. Maybe we can schedule SMU in now that Warshington State left the Warriors with an open date.

  112. BowsForever September 19, 2009 3:40 pm

FSU is absolutely crushing BYU right now, 54-21 in the 4th quarter. Looks like only one “BCS Buster” left on the board right now since Utah just got beat as well.

Of course, if the Warriors can dare to dream and go undefeated this season…

  113. madeinhawaii September 19, 2009 3:50 pm

Ah.. the irony of it all…

JJ must be wishing he had a certain receiver coach and defense guru just about now…

    WARRIORS IMUA!!!

This game is huge… Warriors need to go undefeated and get ranked before the BSU matchup…

  114. Maverick September 19, 2009 4:05 pm

    Aloha Ted.
Are we part of the gang having to listen to the game tonight?

Hoping all is well on your end in Florida land.
Btw, my brother and family finally made the move to Tampa last month.

  115. Hawaiiroller September 19, 2009 4:05 pm

    Hi all.

Today for JJ, but he’ll build that program back up like he did here. I’ll always back him. We got a lot of new things thanks to him.

Bet the $line on UH. So, go boys…beat them Rebs!!!

    Have a great game day Tsaiks…. 🙂

can view the game for free. can’t really hear the audio but I would just tune in to 1420 anyway.

    GO WARRIORS!

  120. Konaboy September 19, 2009 4:30 pm

    Duffer- wish I was there!!

  121. BowsForever September 19, 2009 4:32 pm

Malcolm Lane being interviewed on the radio. Y’know, it may not be such a bad thing for him to redshirt this year so he can get his degree and help out the APR. He’ll be yet another credible receiving threat for next year, though on the other hand, there’ll be quite a few senior receivers.

  122. NYUH September 19, 2009 4:34 pm

    LizKauai (iPhone):

    Good reading comprehension. Hana hou.

    http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/sports/epaper/2009/09/18/0918sparano.html

Head coach Tony Sparano, Sept. 18, 2009
“And, you know, you see some of those type of players that are out there – like Hawaii’s offense for example. You know, I just think they’ve seen a lot more coverage-wise, people are trying to do a lot more to defend them so that they don’t hit ’em with big plays. They’re seein’ double coverage, they’re seein’ these role coverages, things that you might do, you know, to some of those offenses, where I think they’re just a little bit more mature than the guy that’s just out there playin’ in the standard pro offense.”

  123. 99club September 19, 2009 4:36 pm

Gametime Tsaikos! I’ll be looking for you guys on TV. Got a few cold ones in the fridge…everything’s set to watch a Warrior victory!

So who moved the line down to 4? Must have been some HUGE bets.

  124. FloridaTed September 19, 2009 4:51 pm

    Hi, Maverick,

I’m lucky over here, have it on CBS C.

  125. BowsForever September 19, 2009 4:54 pm

TV watchers, people in the stands: How much green in the stands?

  126. NYUH September 19, 2009 4:56 pm

Hmm, CBS CHD is not quite HD. But better than last week.

  127. Hawaiiroller September 19, 2009 5:01 pm

    Wow, what a catch.

  128. jm2375 September 19, 2009 5:03 pm

    What a catch!

    BowsForever – haven’t shown a wide view of the stands yet. There’s at least 2200 Tsai-kos. 🙂

  129. NYUH September 19, 2009 5:04 pm

Pilares mugged on the goal line.

  130. jm2375 September 19, 2009 5:04 pm

    UH 3-0

  131. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:05 pm

Well, 3-0 is better than nothing, but if Alexander really missed a wide open Pilares and wasn’t in a huge rush…missed opportunity. To be fair, I don’t think even Colt followed his progressions all the time.

  132. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:05 pm

The radio makes it sound like there’s more Rebel fans out there.

  133. homie808 September 19, 2009 5:06 pm

    Another feed that’s better!

    http://www.justin.tv/braddahneil

  134. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:07 pm

Should have ended that drive with a TD, but nice to see the offense clicking.

  135. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:08 pm

Wow, declining the false start 🙂

  136. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:09 pm

    Mana Silva, you da MAN!

  137. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:09 pm

and then smack!! D is hitting hard so far

  138. 99club September 19, 2009 5:09 pm

    Crocodile arms! Bwahahaha!

  139. NYUH September 19, 2009 5:10 pm

so far, so good. UNLV not quite in control of itself.

  140. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:10 pm

Keep up the foul trouble, UNLV! Hope Henry saw that hit coming though, especially if the D keeps making good stops. Henry’s our best punt returner in the last, I dunno, 2 years?

  141. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:11 pm

we gotta go for the throat here….

  142. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:12 pm

I think Greg Alexander actually DOES like being a running QB, sorta.

  143. 99club September 19, 2009 5:13 pm

    Pilares! Nice run!

  144. NYUH September 19, 2009 5:13 pm

    Sweet run by Pilares.

  145. 99club September 19, 2009 5:14 pm

    Dang! So close.

  146. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:16 pm

aaaaarrrrrggggghhhh, no. 3 that was catchable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  147. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:16 pm

This is gonna be a tougher game than it should be. Oh well.

  148. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:17 pm

FG -what?!?!?!?! ok I think i am going to be sick……

  149. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:17 pm

Maybe if we get into the red zone on a 4th and <5 situation, we should go for it? Hard to say at this point.

  150. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:18 pm

D, maybe a turnover would help. UNLV will be scoring sooner than later.

  151. 99club September 19, 2009 5:20 pm

The TV announcers were saying Jovonte Taylor was hurt but Hawaii wasn’t saying what or how bad the injury was.

  152. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:22 pm

Couple of no-calls by the officials. Just more reason why the Warriors can’t play field goal ball and hope to win.

  153. 99club September 19, 2009 5:22 pm

On the FG try, they showed in the replay that Funaki called for the snap before Enos was ready.

  154. 99club September 19, 2009 5:24 pm

TD UNLV. Time to return the favor.

  155. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:27 pm

If the Warriors don’t answer back with a TD this series, I’m thinking it’ll be a “try to survive ’til halftime” type of situation.

  156. 99club September 19, 2009 5:29 pm

    What a throw!!!!! TD Hawaii!!!!

  157. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:29 pm

SAVED BY SALAS! We needed that!

  158. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:29 pm

S-A-L-A-S TD!!!!! This offense is sick!!!!!!!!

  159. 99club September 19, 2009 5:30 pm

I can watch that replay over and over. What a THROW!

  160. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:31 pm

OK, maybe it wasn’t Enos. Nice touchback. I’ll take touchbacks all night long.

  161. NYUH September 19, 2009 5:32 pm

Way to respond. Beautiful pass by Alexander on the run.

  162. 99club September 19, 2009 5:33 pm

Alright D! Purcell on a mission!

  163. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:33 pm

Purcell does a 3-and-out! Right ON!

  164. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:33 pm

    Great D!!!!!!!!!!

  165. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:36 pm

Starting off around the 35 or so would be a good time for the Alexander and Co. to make another statement. Red zone efficiency is looking like an issue right now though, you can’t be like Boise/Fresno/Salas just now and rely on crazy-long big plays straight to the end zone.

  166. 99club September 19, 2009 5:36 pm

End of 1st qtr, Hawaii up 10-7. Could easily have been 17-7!

  167. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 5:37 pm

We have great seats and can see the field really well in this intimate stadium.

  168. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:40 pm

Salas is a beast! He’s a different breed of YAC player. And with his yards per play, it’s like he’s a wideout anyway!

Pilares hurdles air? Wish I could’ve seen that.

  169. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:42 pm

Alexander…maybe needs to get sacked to clear out the cobwebs in his head?

  170. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:42 pm

    3 long balls in a row? I don’t think that’s the run-n-shoot.

  171. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:46 pm

That INT actually wasn’t that bad, think of it as a good punt.

  172. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:46 pm

    I-N-T Silva!!!!!!!!!

  173. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:46 pm

Mana Silva redeems himself with an INT! It’s like the INT never happened! What the HECK!??!

  174. 99club September 19, 2009 5:47 pm

Interception Silva! He really wanted that one!

  175. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:47 pm

Oh heck Greg, throw more long balls! (No, please don’t.)

  176. jojo ® September 19, 2009 5:47 pm

    LOL, back to UH

  177. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:49 pm

    GA has overthown-itis

  178. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:49 pm

4th and 5… Might as well keep going for it.

  179. 99club September 19, 2009 5:49 pm

    Turnover on downs. Dang.

  180. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:51 pm

I’m getting a feeling kinda like the SJSU game from last year. That’s not a good feeling.

  181. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:51 pm

They need to get back to the short to medium range passes for rythym’s sake.

  182. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:52 pm

I think Coach Mack should turn over a Gatorade tank or two. Maybe splash Alexander and maybe Pilares a little too.

  183. BowsForever September 19, 2009 5:52 pm

D is doing pretty well, but…see SJSU game. One way or another, we have to score or it’ll be trouble.

  184. Konaboy September 19, 2009 5:59 pm

yep…. and we need to stop the run….

  185. jojo ® September 19, 2009 5:59 pm

    ooh, that was close

  186. jojo ® September 19, 2009 6:00 pm

    whoa, good interception

  187. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:01 pm

I-N-T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our D is bailing us out.

  188. 99club September 19, 2009 6:01 pm

    Yesssss! Torres with the I-N-T!

  189. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:03 pm

OK I like the playcalling thus far on this drive…

  190. 99club September 19, 2009 6:03 pm

He’s going to connect with Bradley on that play one of these days…

  191. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:03 pm

How many times is GA going to overthrow the ball!

  192. TChahng [오키나와] September 19, 2009 6:04 pm

  194. 99club September 19, 2009 6:05 pm

  198. 99club September 19, 2009 6:07 pm

Hee hee! I can imagine the UNLV defensive huddle: “Who’s got Pilares?!”

  199. 99club September 19, 2009 6:07 pm

39 yd TD to Bradley!! Wide open.

  200. TChahng [오키나와] September 19, 2009 6:07 pm

  201. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:07 pm

  202. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:08 pm

it seems our receivers are just flat out fast this year!

  203. 99club September 19, 2009 6:08 pm

Not one screen shot of the Tsaikos in the stands. I’ve got mixed emotions…

  206. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 6:10 pm

They are scoring the other way. We are at the other endzone.

  207. NYUH September 19, 2009 6:12 pm

GA in a bad game with 282 by half time.

  208. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:13 pm

We cant let them score a td for momentum’s sake

  209. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:14 pm

    c’mon D let’s get it together

  210. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:16 pm

NoOOOOOooOOooo… we need to answer right now.

  211. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:21 pm

  212. NYUH September 19, 2009 6:22 pm

    Time management!

  213. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:23 pm

  214. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:24 pm

    Way to end the half!

  217. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:29 pm

GA 341 yds at the half… amazing.

  218. NYUH September 19, 2009 6:32 pm

I think this game is answering the big question: Is Hawaii good? Now all they have to do is win the game.

  219. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:39 pm

100% Agree. Offense & Defense is better than I think anyone expected.

  220. 99club September 19, 2009 6:41 pm

    NYUH-
Agreed. They’re real good. I can’t imagine what the score would be if Alexander and Bradley had their timing down better.

  221. BowsForever September 19, 2009 6:46 pm

Offense isn’t as good as I was expecting, since GA is having an “off” night. Strange how he puts up big numbers but the pts. don’t quite match up.

  222. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 6:47 pm

    Ok!
Now I gotta find out what is making that unreal garlic smell. 20-14 UH at the half.

  223. BowsForever September 19, 2009 6:47 pm

How’s the O-line been doing protecting GA? Can’t really tell on the radio?

  224. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:51 pm

Warrior’s got help on that spot..

  225. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 6:52 pm

Chancellor Hinshaw just visited the Tsai-kos!

  226. 99club September 19, 2009 6:53 pm

    BowsForever-
They’re doing a great job on the protection. I don’t know if he’s been sacked or not. GA’s helped himself by rolling out a few times.

  227. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:54 pm

    BF- Pretty good protection tonight

  228. 99club September 19, 2009 6:54 pm

Uh oh. Need some run D right ’bout now.

  229. 99club September 19, 2009 6:54 pm

    That’s what I’m talking about!

  230. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:55 pm

    Nice stop on first down

  231. 99club September 19, 2009 6:55 pm

Great stop! They are going for it on 4th down. C’mon D!

  232. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:55 pm

I meant 2nd down, and throw in 3rd down as well

  233. 99club September 19, 2009 6:56 pm

    Dang.

  234. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:56 pm

OK D shut them down here, no more first downs!!!!

  235. BowsForever September 19, 2009 6:58 pm

RK, you have a point, but the Warriors have had a hard time trying to take the higher ground.

Offense is gonna have to get it done, because the D is about to break.

  236. Konaboy September 19, 2009 6:59 pm

OK We need 2 more stops like that here. Our secondary looks a little stumped on this drive 🙁

  237. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:00 pm

One more stop! Let’s go Warriors!!

  238. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:00 pm

Yes!!!!!!!!!!! That was a victory for our D! Nice job in the red zone guys!!

  239. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:01 pm

Or not! UH dodges a bullet with a blown FG.

  240. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:01 pm

    Missed FG!!!!!!!! woooooooooooooooooooooooooot-taaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

  241. 99club September 19, 2009 7:01 pm

Yeehawwww! It hit the upright!!! Still 20-14 Hawaii.

  242. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:03 pm

Well, the good news is a FG from this drive, if we can get one, will still put big pressure on UNLV.

  243. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:06 pm

Not the way to start the 2nd half on Offense…. It’s on the D again… and this doesn’t help with their stamina.

  244. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:06 pm

    Well, never mind that.

I wonder, should UH abandon the shovel pass? Maybe it’s just me but it’s effectiveness is nowhere near the Colt-to-Nate combo.

  245. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:08 pm

    Hawaii diagnosed the option there

  246. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:08 pm

    BF- you are right

  247. hebsan September 19, 2009 7:08 pm

    http://www.justin.tv/sticktv_lives

  248. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:09 pm

These 3rd and 4th conversion are killing us. Secondary seems way to soft in the 2nd half

  249. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:10 pm

nice hit, now please one more stop!!!

  250. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:10 pm

we have to figure out those routes!!

  251. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:14 pm

Credit UNLV’s WR on that TD he just flat out out-hustled our #4 for the ball

  252. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:15 pm

    Let’s go Warriors!!!!!

  253. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:20 pm

    Big Play GA to Bradley!!

  254. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:22 pm

It’s close but I think he got the 1st

  255. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:23 pm

    Bad spot, let go Warriors!!

  256. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:23 pm

    1st down!!!!!!!!!!

  257. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:24 pm

    Warriors are underperforming, no question.

…though the Salas TD really helps.

I think a 2-pt. conversion is called for here.

  258. TChahng [오키나와] September 19, 2009 7:24 pm

    Another Warrior TOUCHDOWN!!!

  259. jm2375 September 19, 2009 7:24 pm

    Here we go Warriors!

    TD Greg to Greg, Again!!

  260. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:24 pm

    S-A-L-A-S!!!!!! Yeah baby!!!!

  261. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:24 pm

Should we have gone for 2?

Well, back in the lead for now.

  262. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:26 pm

OK so big question is… Have we figured out their passing game????

  263. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:27 pm

Pretty good job on kick off coverage

  264. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:28 pm

    the answer… no.

  265. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:29 pm

The option/rollouts are giving the Uh D-coordinators fits

  266. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:29 pm

    Big 3rd down here

  267. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:30 pm

100% 3rd and 4th conversions in the 2nd half for UNLV

  268. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:31 pm

  269. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:31 pm

    Beautiful run back

  271. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:36 pm

    Move those sticks!!!

  272. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:37 pm

    Another big bradley pass!!!!!

  273. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:39 pm

    Huge PI call!!

  274. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:39 pm

Green TD!!!!!!!! YEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!! Go FOR 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  275. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:40 pm

    Go Green! TD!

2 pt. conversion is a must now.

  276. BowsForever September 19, 2009 7:41 pm

Gotta stop ’em this drive. It’s as simple as that.

  277. TChahng [오키나와] September 19, 2009 7:41 pm

    arrrrgggg!!!

  278. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:42 pm

OK So now UNLV will go for 2 IF they score a TD to try and get up by 3…. But thats if they score…

  279. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:43 pm

WARRIOR D, IT’S NOW OR NEVER!!!!!

  280. buffoman September 19, 2009 7:45 pm

Can someone teach our boys how to wrap up and tackle.l Running into people has not really done much. Same technique year after year. I thought Mac was a defensive guy.

  281. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:47 pm

Classic Mack D bringing the Heat when its on the line!!

  282. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:50 pm

The blood pressure has officially started to rise

  283. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:52 pm

If they are going to blitz, why do they delay it? This QB is getting rid of it quickly

  284. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:53 pm

O-M-G….. that was the game if he held on!!!!

  285. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:54 pm

Um, time is an issue here

  286. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:56 pm

1st and goal… Hawaii takes a TO, should we just let them score????

  287. jm2375 September 19, 2009 7:57 pm

    Great sack by Heun!!!

  288. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:57 pm

OK, that sack makes this a must stop

  289. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:58 pm

    2 more stops to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  290. jm2375 September 19, 2009 7:58 pm

  291. 99club September 19, 2009 7:58 pm

  292. 99club September 19, 2009 7:59 pm

  293. jm2375 September 19, 2009 7:59 pm

    fr*ck!

  294. Konaboy September 19, 2009 7:59 pm

Well that’s the second time the UNLV #4 does that to UH #4…. coordinators?????

  295. 99club September 19, 2009 7:59 pm

This ain’t over. We just need a FG.

  296. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:00 pm

Game is not over people… Go Warriors!!!

  297. 99club September 19, 2009 8:00 pm

    BELIEVE!

  298. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:01 pm

    299

  300. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:05 pm

One quick throw and a kick….. that’s all that we have to do.

  301. 99club September 19, 2009 8:06 pm

    Hail Mary time.

  302. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:07 pm

If he caught that the clock would have ran out.

  303. TChahng [오키나와] September 19, 2009 8:07 pm

    arrrhhghghghghgh1

  304. 99club September 19, 2009 8:07 pm

Good game Warriors. You played ’em tough.

  305. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:07 pm

Keep your heads up Warriors, tough game.

  306. BowsForever September 19, 2009 8:10 pm

And so it goes for the Warriors. Learn your lessons and try to improve. In a way I sadly ended up being kinda right. This game had an SJSU kinda feeling, though this time the opponent was more capable and the score was higher.

2-1, still not bad. But winning at La Tech, well it just got a little more must-win.

  307. BowsForever September 19, 2009 8:11 pm

Maybe it was where BC and RK were, but over the radio, the UH crowd didn’t seem to beat out the UNLV crowd this game either.

  308. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:12 pm

I give UH a B grade on this game, mostly because of the first half miscues, which ended up factoring into the outcome of the game. We need to now focus on the WAC season, fortunately we have LaTech and not a Boise St. to play after all this traveling.

  309. Mad Dog September 19, 2009 8:13 pm

What if… what if…. what if… A great game to “watch” and a lot of things to be optimistic about. I bet very few people, me included, believed the Warriors would be as good as they are at this point in the season. There is a lot more to look forward to. I think there is a lot more excitement to come.

  310. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 8:14 pm

    UH sections were very loud.

  311. BowsForever September 19, 2009 8:14 pm

There were multiple missed opportunities that really added up, on both offense and defense.

The D bent a little too much this game, and Mana Silva will unfortunately be kicking himself for not getting that INT in the end zone.

  312. jm2375 September 19, 2009 8:15 pm

    Good game but tough loss.

Wahine up 2-0 and leading in the 3rd, 12-8

  313. XxFaithxX September 19, 2009 8:16 pm

    This sucks.

    We had this.

The boys played their hearts out. Props to them/

Time Management needs to be looked at.

Play calling still a little conservative; ending of the 1st half.

Secondary played good, but left a couple/few turnovers on the mat that could have sealed this game.

Pass rush was lacking….really need Paipai and John back.

Thought was should have tried the FG at the end.

Going for two on UH’s last TD was the right call IMHO.

Me and the wife a little shocked that UH could not have pulled this out.

Next up, the start of the WAC season, lets win the Crown.

Hopefully UH WVB can cure the blues we feel now.

  314. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:18 pm

Blues is right, I don’t even want another Mojito 🙁

  315. BowsForever September 19, 2009 8:19 pm

What bugs me most is that GA is still inconsistent. The D was a known question mark, but GA seems a little more erratic than I would expect (the three long balls in a row, two of ’em way off the mark, was a head-scratcher). His numbers aren’t quite matching his actual performance on the field. Maybe I should be chalking it up to the difficulty of the system.

  316. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:22 pm

BF- 2nd year in the system, early in the season, he will come around. Being that he is putting up these numbers and has yet to have a complete game is very promising.

  317. buffoman September 19, 2009 8:25 pm

I can’t understand the last series. Why not go to the middle at least once? We had two time outs? Going for the long ball and throwing it away was terribel. Loose time looking long and throwing away. poor judgement. If it’s the field goal neede to look for what was given. Even the announcers saw the opening.

I don’t think it was a “b”. More like a “c-“. Defense did not wrap up. No adjustment on #4, twice.

POsitives. The o-line is solid. Great work there. Mana Silva is a beast. Salas is crazy as is Polaras. Alexander has to play smarter and take what is given. The lobg ball is beautiful but getting greedy makes him look bad as he hold it too long and winds up stairing down his receiver. When he does the quick look and shoot, he looks great. Too inconsistent.

Defense could not stop anything in the second half.

Grade hard and hopefully they will work harder to bring up the grade.

  318. madeinhawaii September 19, 2009 8:26 pm

I hate to say this, but it just seems like we lost this one one defense.. I mean… Our Offense was on the field for only 2:09 of the whole third quarter. We really missed our starters and injured veterans. Maybe we’ve become too dependent on our defense to come up big when it really counts.

Still it was a good hard fought game. Pains me to see the Warriors lose.

    Wac season in 10 days.
    GO WARRIORS!

  319. cavewarrior September 19, 2009 8:27 pm

tough loss…shoulda woulda coulda. ONE SNAP & CLEAR!!!

    GO Warriors!!!

  320. BowsForever September 19, 2009 8:30 pm

C- is about right, I think.

Last series was desperation time already. That situation was preventable at several points by both the offense and then the overwhelmed D in the second half, but you have to give credit to UNLV exploiting the D’s weaknesses. The D has a ways to go, because Boise and Fresno are probably considerably better at playing physical than UNLV is.

Colt showed how the run-n-shoot is done when near-perfection. “Take what the defense gives you.” Long balls usually aren’t what the defense gives you.

  321. jm2375 September 19, 2009 8:30 pm

    Wahine win easily in a sweep, 25-17 x3! 😀

  322. jojo ® September 19, 2009 8:31 pm

unreal game….unlv really came back in the 2nd half

    Next stop, la tech

  324. Kazz (blkberry_storm) September 19, 2009 8:35 pm

PROPS TO DA HAWAII FANS FOR MAKING NOISE!

PROPS TO DA WARRIORS FOR PLAYING WITH HEART!!!!

AUWE TO THE UNLV COACH FOR BEING AN ASS WITH THAT “HANDSHAKE” AFTERWARDS.

  325. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:37 pm

I don’t agree with a C-, UNLV is a good team. The D is hurting, I give the a C+ because of the second half problems in the secondary. Offense get’s a B. Ok so that’s a B-. So we lose by 1 point on a B- performance against a good team. Hawaii is not a bad team no matter how you slice it.

  326. BowsForever September 19, 2009 8:42 pm

Clearly, UH is not bad. But this level of play won’t do the job against La Tech, which is an important game to win to keep the Hawaii Bowl goal within reach.

  327. LizKauai (iPhone) September 19, 2009 8:44 pm

“Re-bels” taunting chant resounds through the stadium halls as we leave.
    Pffffft.
Tsai-kos are loaded on the busses and rolling. Mahalo to las vegas for the wonderful arrangements and everyone for supporting our WARRIORS!!!

    One snap and clear!

  328. Konaboy September 19, 2009 8:47 pm

really? you don’t think this level of play would beat La-Tech? I think UNLV is much better than La-tech

  329. buffoman September 19, 2009 8:54 pm

A “c-” is not saying that this is a bad team. A “c-” is saying that execution is below average in this game. For this good team to be a better team it has to execute mcuh better than the “c-” I assigned for this game.

If we had a “B-” performance we would have won the game. And that is saying that we have a good team. The game was winnable for this team as it is a good team, the execution was just not at a level that would allow it.

  330. Harry September 19, 2009 8:56 pm

    GO BOWS!!!

  331. Jack Flash September 19, 2009 9:04 pm

  337. big hilo fan2 is all good in vegas September 19, 2009 9:53 pm

The Tsaiokos showed up in force. sum made big noise.

our Warriors played really well. really well. their #4 kept burning us.

they didn’t quit. not once. offense and defense. the oline played really great, only 1 sack was what i saw. our D was hurting, some great players out, but the ones that played gave it their all.

you know who was the most disappointed in the stadium? NOBODY wuz mo hurt dan me.

but i hold my hands high to the Warriors. Good job. do better in La.

Greg Alexander, you can do it, yes you can.

  338. big hilo fan2 is all good in vegas September 19, 2009 9:55 pm

Another blue screen of death! Have to start over from scratch.

Congratulations to the Wahine – only seven more wins to reach 1,000 for Dave Shoji.

We watched the first half of the UNLV game at Anyplace on South King. Unbelievable food and if you want to bring your own pupus or desserts you can. I would strongly recommend it as a place to go watch football and eat. The place is relatively small and most of the people seemed to be in their own private parties rather than in a large group like the Tsai-kos were last week. Still, everyone was very nice and yelling loudly when required.

We left the car parked on the street in front of the bar and walked up to the Stan Sheriff Center during the half. We always carry a small radio with us so we continued listening to the football game until the end because fans sitting around us were crowding in to hear what was going on while cheering for the Wahine.

From my very novice POV, the team as a whole didn’t seem to be on the same page much of the time – particularly the defense. I’d like to be the fly on the wall at the coaches’ meeting on Monday

Mentioned earlier today that we had a Wahine volleyball ticket for next Thursday to give away. Now we have two because I got tagged at a meeting this afternoon to sit in on a planning meeting Thursday night.

If anyone wants the tickees, please send an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com & don’t forget to include your phone number.

Also, Whitey – please forgive the misspelling of your blog name earlier today. Should have proofed it before I punched the Submit button.

Safe travels back home everyone. Looking forward to hearing what the coaches and the players have to say when they get back here.

Off to bed shortly – I too am recovering from surgery which was more complex than either the doctor or I expected. Fortunately, it’s on my face so I can still get around even though I look like I was on the losing end of a 12-round fight.

POMAI: Did anyone win the contest?

  344. visitor September 19, 2009 10:23 pm

#4 vs. #4 – you’d think they’d make an adjustment after the first TD. 6’4″ and 5’8″…the little guy needed help.

    Go Bows!

  345. Slugger September 19, 2009 10:23 pm

    curveball,

Thanks for the stats. Put’s the game in perspective.

Next game. GO WARRIORS!!! GO TSAIKOS!!!

  346. Darren September 19, 2009 10:25 pm

what the hell was up with that “handshake” at the end of the game?

  347. Slugger September 19, 2009 10:28 pm

    That was an a****** of a UNLV coach…that’s what’s u p w/ the quick palm.

  348. Slugger September 19, 2009 10:30 pm

Sorry, Darren, but I think that was totally so unprofessional. He wasn’t gonna get mugged by the UH team. No class.

  349. Slugger September 19, 2009 10:34 pm

G’Night all! Safe travels to those who are leaving LV tomorrow.

  350. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 19, 2009 11:10 pm

    Darren and Slugger,

Yup the UNLV coach wants a “rivalry” huh????

    DAT FAKA GOT ONE!

  351. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 19, 2009 11:12 pm

Hope Vaughn Meatoga is ok. He kinda limped off the field quickly late in the 4th there.

Other than that, looks like we avoided another game without injuries to report which is always a good thing.

The bye week should only help our Warriors to rest and recover mentally and physically.

  352. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 19, 2009 11:15 pm

Watching the Wahine volleyball replay right now and it looks that the overlapping times between the football and the volleyball game affected the attendance.

Looks like a turnstile of about 3,500.

Congrats on the solid win tonight to the Wahine. Looks like they cleaned up their game tonight as Pepperdine looked to have the Wahine a bit off-balanced last night.

BTW, provided we continue to win the next seven games in a row, Dave Shoji will get his 1,000th win right here at home.

  353. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 19, 2009 11:22 pm

The offensive line can build more from this game.

Against a MUCH better team and a more deliberate pass rush, the offensive line held their own again.

KEEP WORKING HARD BOYS! YOU CAN ONLY GET BETTER!!!

  354. LizKauai (Aspire-LV) Go Warriors! September 20, 2009 12:02 am

    pomai- 35 – 21 LizKauai

    Mahalo Warriors- safe home!
I’ll be right behind you in a couple more hours…

Nitey nite and SWEET WARRIOR DREAMS!

  355. Garret September 20, 2009 12:35 am

I don’t know why I’m still awake when my kids will be up early today and we have a full day of activity planned *before* we get to Kekoa’s event at noon. I just couldn’t sleep I guess and had to reflect on the game.

There are obvious negatives that will be picked apart during the extra long wait for the next game. Clock management (at the end of *both* halves) hurt the Warriors, there is still a problem for deciding to go for two points earlier (this time the Warrior coaches didn’t realize they wanted to go for 2 until it was too late to call for timeout), how the Warrior offense only got to run 4 plays in the third quarter, etc. After the next 10 minutes I think I’ll try to refrain from discussing any of them on the blog.

  356. Garret September 20, 2009 12:43 am

There were a LOT of positives in this game.

    1. Salas is scaring defenses now and requiring double-teams, which really opened things up for Pilares in this game. That senior DB Lee could *not* tackle Pilares in the first half, and Pilares really did a great job of running with the ball after the catch.

    2. Rodney Bradley has adjusted to this offense amazingly quickly and is an awesome deep threat. His speed is also dangerous on crossing patterns.

    3. The OL gave Alexander a lot of time on most plays. The run wasn’t effective in this game, but their pass blocking was solid.

    4. The UH D came up big many times during the first half. That was really impressive considering the injuries to the DEs. The D wore down in the second half, but that was a combination of a lack of DL depth due to injuries (really hurt the pass rush), heat, being on the field too long, and UNLV being the best team UH played this year.

    5. Elliott Purcell made a lot of plays, which was great considering that he’s playing injured.

    6. The Warrior fans were loud, though outnumbered. The best part of it was that this was the best I’ve seen for the Warrior fans quieting down when UH had the ball on offense.

  357. Matt September 20, 2009 12:44 am

Back from the UNLV game and some post game food and casino time. It was a really good game. I give UNLV credit. The UNLV receivers are a lot better than people give them credit for. That Wolfe guy is for real. They have some really tall receivers which made it hard for our defenders to stop. They made some good adjustments at halftime and our defense couldn’t stop them when it counted. We really missed Falemalu and Fonoti tonight. Our DBs need to turn around and look for the ball.

Our guys fought really hard, but had some key mistakes as did the coaches. The coaches were trying to call timeout again on the second to last score to go for two, but we kicked the XP before they could call it. Funaki snapped that missed FG early because the play clock was running down. Probably should have called a TO or taken the penalty, but it is what it is. At the end, I wish they would have taken some shorter throws instead of trying to get all of the yardage on one play. There were a lot of Hawaii fans there, but the UNLV fans showed up in mass too. I was sitting on the UH sideline so I didn’t have a great view of the number of UH fans, but we were well represented.

I thought the Offense played well. GA had time to pass for most of the night. GA had a 65% completion rate for 3 TDs and 477 yards so he didn’t do too bad no matter what people say. Bradley had a great game (8 catches, 189 yds and a TD) and Pilares did well too (13 catches, 146 yards). Salas, did what he always does and had a consistent good game (6 catches 104 yards, 2 TDs). I am pretty sure that Jovonte Taylor got hurt early because I think he was out for the game after the first couple series. Meatoga came out limping pretty bad too. On defense it seemed like RJ Kiesel Kauhane had his name called an awful lot as did Blaze. Mana Silva was laying the smack down on some opponents out there.

I don’t know what is up on all of the guys on the Advertiser website bashing our team and coaches. UNLV was favored in this game and just barely pulled it out. Our guys played a good game for the most part and we came up just short to a team that is supposed to be one of the best in UNLV history and should have beaten an Oregon State team that many pick to finish in the top half of the Pac 10. I say Warriors, hold your heads up high, heal up, and get back to work since we have the WAC schedule coming up. Let’s get ready for our second straight nationally televised game at LA Tech. That game is a must win if we are to go bowling this year. Go Warriors.

  358. Garret September 20, 2009 12:44 am

Sean Tesoro missed this game because he’s out for the season with a broken right ankle.

  359. Garret September 20, 2009 12:46 am

Note about why UH didn’t go for 2 when the score was 26-21.

Hawaii coach Greg McMackin might have made a tactical error early in the fourth quarter when the Warriors took a 26-21 lead on Alexander’s 23-yard touchdown strike to wide-open junior receiver Greg Salas.

Instead of attempting a 2-point conversion, junior kicker Scott Enos booted the extra point through the uprights as Warriors coaches tried to call a timeout.

McMackin wasn’t watching because he was busy giving instructions to his defensive players.

“We definitely had some problems,” McMackin said of his defense. “We had to adjust. We could have gone for two. Who knows? We might have missed it … That didn’t really have a difference in the game. It could have gone a bunch of different ways.”

  360. Garret September 20, 2009 12:48 am

Note about the UNLV receiver Payne catching two TDs on jump-ball type situations–this is a standard play that UNLV has been using with Payne. They did it for the game-winning TD just like they did it in the Oregon State game last week.

Praising how Payne caught 2 TDs against them on alley-oop passes, just like the TD he caught against Oregon State, Mac said:
“That guy does a great job. He did it against Oregon State (last week). He just goes up and they throw him an alley-oop.” (RJ)

About Payne beating Hopkins for the game-winning TD, Mac said:
“(Hopkins) was there and (Payne) just outplayed him. The receiver just went up and got the ball. He’s a great receiver.” (RJ)

About how they allowed the mismatch between Hopkins and Payne on the game-winning TD because they called a full-out blitz, Mac said:
“Yeah, it was a mismatch. But we had a full-out blitz and hit (Clayton) the two times before he got that one off.” (RJ)

  361. Garret September 20, 2009 12:51 am

On a positive note, RGM made some big plays to spark his team to a win.

BC Lions head coach Wally Buono gets splashed with water by his players after defeating Toronto Argonauts to become the coach with the most wins in CFL history at the conclusion of CFL football action in Vancouver, British Columbia, September 19, 2009. Lyle Stafford/Reuters BC Lions head coach Wally Buono gets splashed with water by his players after defeating Toronto Argonauts to become the coach with the most wins in CFL history at the conclusion of CFL football action …

It wasn’t the prettiest win of Wally Buono’s 20-year coaching career. Nor was it the easiest.

Neither of which matters after the Lions general manager and coach became the winningest coach in CFL history with the Lions’ 23-17 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at BC Place on Saturday.

Buono surpassed Don Matthews on the all-time list with 232 wins to his credit. Matthews, who spent parts of five seasons coaching the Argos, was in the building to witness a standard that could stand for a very long time. The late Frank Clair is third with 147 wins while the Montreal Alouettes’ Marc Trestman is second among active coaches with 19 victories, a mere 213 behind Buono.

While Buono’s quest for immortality was the leading storyline against the Argos, there were others. Lions quarterback Buck Pierce completed 20 of 28 pass attempts for 171 yards in his first start since suffering concussion-like symptoms on Aug. 14, the last time these two teams met. Pierce started in place of Jarious Jackson, who was lost for three to five weeks with a damaged rotator cuff, suffered last week in a loss to the Montreal Alouettes.

The Lions led 11-0 after the first quarter, 14-10 at the half and were tied with the Argos at 17-17 after 45 minutes.

Lions defensive lineman Ricky Foley finished with three sacks, two of which came before the game was eight minutes old, while defensive back Korey Banks had an equally impressive outing. Banks had an interception in each of the first two quarters – to give him a team-leading four on the season – with both resulting in points for the home team.

Running back Martell Mallett put the Lions up 10-0 on a one-yard rush at 5:34 of the first quarter, a little more than two minutes after kicker Sean Whyte opened the scoring with a 15-yard field goal. A bad snap on Toronto’s first series – recovered by special teams phenom Jason Arakgi – resulted in the early lead.

It looked like the rout was on after White was good from 32 yards early in the second quarter to put B.C. up by 14-0.

    Not so fat.

Argos kicker Jason Medlock connected on a field goal from 44 yards out and Jordan Younger brought the visitors within three points four plays later, scooping up James Green’s blocked punt for a touchdown. It was just the first blocked punt – the result of a low snap – the Lions had allowed since 2003.

Running back Jamal Robertson gave the Argos their first lead on a one-yard scamper to make the score 17-14 with 6:52 gone in the third quarter. Whyte deadlocked the game on the Lions next series with a 32-yard field goal.

With the game in dire need of some excitement, the Lions’ Ryan Grice-Mullen put together a pair of big back-to-back punt returns early in the fourth quarter. He had returns of 54 and 45 yards to set up field goal attempts on each occasion.

Wow, I really messed up that last post! I guess it is past 4am and I’m sleepy. This is what that post was supposed to say:

nothing to be said that hasnt already been said…..

one step forward, two steps back…….

    my thoughts:

    1) damn i had no idea our DB’s were that short
    2) i thought we were going to address this whole running right up the middle against us like Moses parting the red sea thing….
    3) whats with the usage of timeouts?

oh we still can have a winning season! get that running up the middle cr@p figured out cuz La Tech is going to have a field day with it.

    still plenty of hope left!
    go warriors.

Update on a former UH LB.

Tui Suiaunoa, who by night is a bouncer and security professional for Hollywood clients but by day calls himself the defensive coordinator for your Los Angeles Temptation, admits that when he tells people about his coaching gig, “they say, `Dude, you got one of the luckiest jobs in the whole world.”‘

    Seriously?

“Whenever I coach anyone, I take it seriously,” said the former University of Hawaii linebacker. “My reputation is on the line. I want everyone to see that you can teach girls to play football. They’ve got heart and desire. They know how violent it can get, but they accept it.”

  365. Garret September 20, 2009 1:00 am

Final thought before I get a couple of hours of sleep: UNLV is better than a number of teams UH has left on its schedule…and UH dominated the first half and could have won the game despite it being on the road.

    Good (extra early) morning everyone!

Peaches and I are waiting at McCarran for our flight to SFO. When the TSA people saw our Hawaii IDs, they mentioned that the team and many others passed through a few hours earlier enroute home.

It was great to see so many Tsai-kos at the game…and old friends at Kiku Hana and CiCi’s. Too bad we lost the game, but many of us were able to meet for the first time.

Again, thanks to Rich2176 and las vegas who stepped up for us again this year!

  372. SteveM September 20, 2009 1:40 am

I was surprised after we wrapped up at Kiku Hana last night. The karaoke service providers (Allan and Chudi) came to me and said, “How are you related to Gaye at Genji’s?”. Turns out Chudi and Gaye were in school together, and she and Allan frequented Genji’s twice a week. Allan said he helped Art set up the initial TV/sound systems. Small world.

…or maybe not so small when las vegas is involved 🙂 They said they wanted to set up a “Genji’s” in Las Vegas…still looking, but Kiku Hana is a favorite site.

Things I’m taking away from the game.

    1. Needs just a little more trust among the coaching staff.
to the new coaches, you doing good in biting your tongues. to the new coaches, gotta keep going the extra mile. remember, we’re all in this together. to the old coaches, Rich, Mack, you can do it, yes you can.

    2. Training assistants, Mel and all, keep working smarter to keep our Warriors healthy.

    3. Bradda Kazz, yu are a beastie boy!!! 😆

    4. Don Weir, get Slugger to volunteer to help you. You are overworked, underpaid, underloved, underappreciated and understaffed. Go hobnob with the big boys, thats alright. But you’re way way way overbooked.
Bottom line, whatever you need, get it done. I’m volunteering Slugger to help you get through your checklist. 😀 I’ll be checking up this Tuesday. Thank you.

    Go Warriors.

i’m still habut about last nite’s game. we shoulda won dat bugga. we coulda won dat bugga. we had dat bugga won. tank wuz just a little short on doze 2 routes. 6’4″ vs. 5’8″, no can dat kine, no can. we no dat in da cluches they gonna run everyone away from that play so that our short guyz are left alone.

the bottom line is we gotta knock doze tall guyz down at the line. jmo

  383. mctruck September 20, 2009 5:44 am

Talking about those mismatches between UH’s db’s and UNLV’s wr’s; maybe it would be a good idea if UH starts utilizing speedy taller-athletic players like Earvin Sione to take on taller wr’s??, UNLV’s #88 and #4 were killing us last night.
But, as UH admits…..the offense has got to do a better job of scoring in the red zone…that would have put this baby to bed for sure.
I think that Louisiana Tech game is going to be a dooozy, I hope UH comes back with a big win, that’s another pivotal game.

  384. mctruck September 20, 2009 5:50 am

Looking at the stats from the SMU/Washington State game last night, one wonders how the cougars pulled out a win??? SMU you might say, had it in the bag????….oh well. next.

  385. mctruck September 20, 2009 6:00 am

Forgot to mention…..I think that the offense got bogged-down because they seemed to limit any running plays in the red zone….that or their running play(s), just weren’t clicking???(needs working on). Bottom line, when it’s one dimentional/predictable, you ain’t going no where=bogged-down.
