Game day: UNLV

It’s the final home of the season for the Warriors, who also will bid aloha to 23 seniors.

Yesterday, slim became none when San Diego State won in a rout, ending the Warriors’ final chance to represent the West in the MWC title game. Heck, it was a long shot, anyway.

What’s guaranteed is to see the unique play of Joey Iosefa. UH has had big backs before, but none as versatile and skilled as Iosefa. True, Scott Harding is indeed “interesting,” as labeled in a Grantland story, but Iosefa is multi-skilled, as well. Iosefa runs, runs with power, catches, passes, and keeps defensive coordinators busy thinking he might run, run with power, catch or pass.

Heres’s a pre-Warrior Iosefa:

joey

This also will be a chance for UH followers to one day say: “I remember seeing wideout Devante Davis play in college …”

  4. mytake November 22, 2014 8:47 am

Forget football talk. You have to earn that attention. UH beats Pitt! Ben, get off your butt and start writing up the contract and make sure the check doesn’t bounce like an over inflated basketball! My only worry is that other programs will take notice and out bid for him.

  5. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2014 8:51 am

I would say Harding is more indispensable than interesting. Post-injury Joey seemed to lack the explosiveness he had in the beginning of the season and Lakalaka et. al. did a nice job filling in. On the other hand, I’d hate to see what it would be like if Harding were out of a string of games 0_O

    Guud morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

MAHALO AND ALOOOOOOHA!..to all the Senior Warriors! It’s been great watching you guys compete. Through adversity, you’ve managed to keep together and battle each game. I’ve never witnessed anyone quit!
GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES as you start on your life journey.
    IMUA WARRIORS!…IMUA!

  9. Old Diver November 22, 2014 9:27 am

Was anyone actually serious in their hopes for UH to play in the MWC Championship game?

  10. ArcumFortis November 22, 2014 9:38 am

Majors props to the basketball bows. I can’t help but wonder about how good the team would be with Isaac still here and Gib at the helm. These are Gib’s recruits and they are good. I hope that when the NCAA finally puts out their findings the infractions they identify are serious enough to justify the actions taken. If not I hope that the people responsible for the decisions will be held accountable and removed from their positions of authority. I still feel very perplexed about it. But also very impressed with the players that have remained and coach Taylor’s ability to bring them together and have them playing at a high level. They could easily have folded under the circumstances they faced. Instead they are exceeding expectations. Impressive so far!

Looking forward to seeing our seniors a last time and hoping the Warriors can put together a solid effort. San Jose senior night last week must have been wretched for their seniors. Let’s represent ours in good way.

  11. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 9:41 am

me wanted good things happen.. for them in the win column..old diver…
but not want them in championship game…
problem is…. maybe they would get embarrassed…

    although… must say..
they were playing pretty well the first few games…even if had a non-existent offense..

  12. SteveM November 22, 2014 9:48 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Game day. Senior night.
New superstition of mine: No further comment from me until game time (since we won the last game).

  13. gigi-hawaii November 22, 2014 9:49 am

I’ll miss the seniors, especially Harding.
    Good luck, Warriors!

  14. beans November 22, 2014 9:58 am

Let’s give our team all our support in today’s last home game. Especially the seniors who have endured and lived the “no quiting” mantra. Although the wins were sparse they represented us well with their effort and attitude. Be there. Go Bows Go!
So Fei Jai what does malau si fut mean?

    arcum #10:

here, here – so true especially the statement regarding the “acting” chancellor and BJ – I would like to see them “fry”!

their decision may have been way too premature – guilty before acquiring all the facts, evaluating/developing courses of action, and selecting the best that would be for the coaches, team, and UH

I did use positive “leadership skills” to reach their decision – fry baby, fry!!!!!!!

  17. UHfan808 November 22, 2014 10:16 am

Good luck in today’s game, Warriors!

Thank you to the Seniors for your committment to the team effort!

    GO WARRIORS!!! 🙂

  18. A-House November 22, 2014 10:16 am

to all the members of UH football team in 2014, including all the red-shirts and walk-ons, and especially the Seniors,

    THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  20. Candy November 22, 2014 10:27 am

It is time for all members to step up!! Make it a team effort and a good send off for the seniors!

  21. Maddog50 November 22, 2014 10:29 am

Here is to a good crowd and a decisive win tonite. Make it two in a row!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!!

  22. Tempmanoa November 22, 2014 10:33 am

Joey has always been one of my favorite players. But the last three seasons we have been last, last, and next to last in rushing in the Mountain West. One of the reasons we have scored fewer points than any team in the Mountain West this year at just over 19 points per game (while our defense gives up over 26 points per game). Why can’t we at least get our run game up to average in the Mountain West– say 6th instead of last.

  23. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 10:41 am

FJ got language of his own….

malau si fut mean = lousy football coach maybe ? he he he

  26. Boolakanaka November 22, 2014 10:48 am

Aloha all! Couple of items of note:

    Holomua seniors!

Eli up over the crimson at halftime 7-3, playing for the all nerd championship.

Louisville safety has 13 picks this season….how many do we have as a team???!

  27. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 10:59 am

Tempmanoa….. as has been noted on here.. by various posters…trying to run against 8 in the box…is paramount to lunacy…or stupidity…just plain dumb…

MIL scored 50 + points last nite…n they have a coach who likes to ‘spread’ the field as noted by sum reporters…

maybe that is reason…. we have a very good back…but still last in rushing…have you seen this before…run…run…pass…kick…repeated over n over…is it ne wonder we are last….in rushing…

  28. Boolakanaka November 22, 2014 11:02 am

    Ugggh defeat……boohoo

  29. Z November 22, 2014 11:05 am

Just me but I was thinking that if the men’s bb game was televised last night the whole island would be rocking right now and everyone would be talking about UH. You know.

  30. Z November 22, 2014 11:06 am

C’mon senors. Show us that you can romp. You can do it.

  31. pollypicador November 22, 2014 11:44 am

It’s would be a façade for me to say I miss this group of seniors…I couldn’t.

In 11 games this season the offense has scored 2 touchdowns or less in 8 of the games…what is there to miss? In 4 seasons-4 losing records, no Hawaii Bowl appearances…nothing…again, what is there to miss?

People laugh, cry and cuss when they watch this team and HC…that’s not the truth?

Others view UH football as a bunch of player wannabes (or pebbles) as opposed to other teams and players (or rocks) in the MWC…again, that’s not the truth?

UH football has hit rock bottom. It’s given more headaches to more fans watching than in any other time in it’s history, yet there will be some that will pay tribute to this group of seniors.

    No.

It’s like, collectively, this group of seniors has shot a round of golf in the 100’s and “yoyo” and “yoko” are the only ones clapping and saying nice round. Not me. People should save their superlatives for worthier teams, players, leadership and collective efforts instead of diluting the phrase “great group of seniors that will be missed.”

  32. azwarrior22 November 22, 2014 12:26 pm

what time is the game tonight? 6:00 p.m. Always 3 hr difference from AZ, so +3 hrs over here. I’ll tune into the mwc stream.

  33. Markazulu November 22, 2014 12:30 pm

Congrats to men’s basketball on that upset.

  34. derek November 22, 2014 12:31 pm

Seniors, thanks for your efforts. Get your degrees and make a difference in the community. Volunteer your time to good causes and stay healthy. And always, family is the most important thing. Good luck!

  35. ArcumFortis November 22, 2014 12:44 pm

    31. Poly. I don’t hear a lot of superlatives being directed toward this group of seniors. Mostly I hear a respect for their willingness to struggle through adversity and continue to battle on. It’s easy to be gracious when you are in the winner’s circle but much harder when you are in the loser’s. This goes for players, coaches and fans. I am going to show up tonight and show my gratitude and respect for this group. True, their record is not a good one and it was indeed agonizing to watch many of the games they participated in. But I don’t think senior night is only about wins and losses.

  36. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 12:45 pm

Polly….whileme may agree with you in thought…i would not go as far as you…

ME THINKS..at the start of the ‘chow regime…players were asked to buy into the program…as if you remember his first year…the players elected a capt.. n he rejected it…and so every year…they performed..not fully committed to his philosophy…

and by the record he has posted in 3 years…looks like to me ne way…they were right…physically.. i have a hunch they all could do more with better coaching…and am sure the record would prove that…

many a coach has come into the college ranks n turned a program around with basically same players…in many sports…not just football..both college n pros…some immediately.. n sum later on …

    some can coach.. n sum can’t…guess what category ‘chow’ falls into…some have personalities n enthusiasm… n leadership…others don’t…

me thinks he is to autocratic…when the first season unfolded…they walked on the field arm in arm…that to me was the kiss of death…

an assistant coach waits years to get the head job…n thinks he will show all how it should be done…only to fail miserably…however… he still does not think so…now the powers to be…will decide…..the fans have deceded… by attendance…they do not want more of this….

  37. Markazulu November 22, 2014 12:48 pm

How has stubble field/ Haynes Recovery been goin? I

  38. innocent observer November 22, 2014 2:00 pm

can we include the coaches, especially chow in the senior walk? after, this might be their last home game too as most fans don’t want them back.

  39. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 3:02 pm

    good point innocent…
many fans are going to show support for the seniors.. n not to support chow….
maybe can carry full sheet of paper with the letters
CWWS….= CHOW WALK WITH SENIORS….HE HE HE

  44. bowwar November 22, 2014 3:38 pm

Heading to the stadium shortly to cheer on the Seniors…Most of these kids are Mack’s final recruits and they did their best to keep up a winning tradition. Unlike ST, I think Joey’s career has been disappointing, but nonetheless, he tried…I can’t say enough good things about Harding and what he has brought to the program. We’ll be losing a good bunch of players on the DL (Yap, et.al.) and OL…I hope we can recruit replacements accordingly with or without Chow at the helm.

    Imua Warriors!

  45. cocobean November 22, 2014 3:43 pm

#31. You make me laugh. Ever think about going into comedy. The team’s record and performance are on the coaches not the players. The coaches are the ones who brought them here. The coaches are the ones who are charged with teaching, developing and leading the team. It’s the coaches responsibility to put them in the best position to succeed. The coaches failed not the players. I applaud them for sticking out the tough times.

Most appreciate their effort and their decision to play here rather than going somewhere else. It really takes a man with “pebbles” instead of “rocks” to demean the players while hiding behind a computer screen.

I hope you, yoko and yoyo enjoy yourselves at whatever watering hole you claim you watch the games at.

  46. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2014 3:49 pm

Mahalo to all Seniors – Warriors always! Forget everybody else and just play for yourselves and each other. Only you know what football means to you and how hard you have worked. Now, have fun, play the game you love and thank you for being our Warriors!

    You can do this Warriors!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Can San Jose State beat San Diego State?

    Can Hawaii beat Fresno State?

    And tie for first place?

I’m very happy for the reviled Ikaika Woosley.

  100. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 10:27 pm

my hat off to them seniors…they survived….

  101. Oneseason November 22, 2014 10:31 pm

It was a fun game to watch. Pulling out a last second win against UNLV was exciting, but its UNLV. If UH and Oceanic run the numbers and can live with a 4 win season in 2014 followed by about the same in 2015, then it would be great to see their numbers.

  102. st. anthony trojan November 22, 2014 10:32 pm

Somebody buy that clock operator a beer. 🙂 Way to go Warriors!

  109. slenzi November 23, 2014 3:56 am

So before the UH game, I’m down here in Florida watching Florida State eek out a win against hapless Boston College. When all was said and done, FSU had the “W” and the football pundits talked about having the will to win. Then I think back to 2007 season with UH 12-0, and remember how they willed themselves to win several close games. Last night the Warriors showed they had the will to win. If you put that together with team chemistry and trust, you got WINNER!

  110. 808 November 23, 2014 6:03 am

Great win last night. Best wishes to the seniors in their future endeavors.

  111. Shoko November 23, 2014 6:12 am

Great game last night. Glad to see the seniors and the fans get to enjoy the last home game of the season with a victory. Doesn’t happen too often in Chow’s tenure but when it does you got to enjoy it.

Got to feel bad, for Hauck. The look on his face epitomizes a man that just endured an agonizing defeat in the worse way. However, I remember the way the game against them last year ended in their house, so one can’t feel too bad. What goes around, comes around as they say.

Anyway, don’t see how Hauck can lose his job this year after getting a raise and an extension after last season but stranger things have happened. After watching the Nevada game last night, his redemption could come by retaining and keeping the Fremont Cannon red for another season. Nevada looked terrible!

  112. d1shima November 23, 2014 6:21 am

    Great Morning All!

    Nope! It wasn’t a dream…

    Hawaii won!

Poor secondary play and tackling along with turnovers kept UNLV in this till the end. Hawaii scores 24 unanswered points and almost gets undone by “jump balls”still in the end so happy for the win and an escape from the cellar of the MW. This team needs more size speed and quicks on both sides to compete. Hope the program gets the support it sorely needs. And for those constant critics who just seem to relish in the shortcomings…..better days are ahead regardless of who is at the helm. Tupai…..Dejon…..et all are going to be very productive. Gonna need a lot of help at all positions so here is to a good recruiting group-Go Warriors

I know doing play by play isn’t easy but, if the guy can’t do it, get somebody else. I don’t know who’s worst, Bobby C or Kekaula. Bobby gets stuck on names as the play continues on. He ends up giving a recap of what just happened. He should just call out the yards and figure out the player after the play. Kekaula has this weird halting in short bursts play calling. Can someone close to him tell him to stop that?!

Great to see the seniors win this one. In the second half it really looked like the game would come down to the final play. Going to miss those guys who have been through a lot but fought through it all. Hate to see the season end on the road, but it will be interesting to see how we do against a rival beginning to get its mojo back– we don’t have a chance at a championship, but we can be spoilers. I stopped supporting Chow this year and believe we need a coaching change, but I am still one who loves the team– glad that guys like me get to enjoy the weekend for a change.
