Game day: Rice

Houston — It will be a matchup of 1-3 teams when UH and Rice meet today in a non-conference game. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Hawaii time.

Here are the keys for Hawaii:

> Fast start: Yep, it’s a cliche, of course, but the Warriors need to take advantage of what will appear to be a small crowd. Even if it were half full — and a fifth is more likely — attendance will appear to be slight in 70,000-seat Rice Stadium. In this busy sports town, there was no stories on the game in the Thursday and Friday paper. Free parking is another indicator.

> YACs: While the focus is on quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, the three No. 1 receivers — X Marcus Kemp, Z Quinton Pedroza and slotback Scott Harding — can help with better post-catch production. In the past two games, their combined YAC is 1.24.

> Tackle the back: QB Driphus Jackson is a dual threat and running back Darik Dillard scored three TDs in a game two weeks ago. But running back Jowan Davis sets the tone. He’s 5-7, but runs even lower than that, making him both difficult to spot and tackle. He’s a threat on the perimeter and inside zones. He averages 100 yards a game, and also has 10 receptions.

A winnable game vs a team whose defense is its soft spot–helps our O get back on the tracks. Our D will do it again.

  4. tom-warriornation October 4, 2014 5:40 am

GO WARRIORS! As of yesterday, we have 208 Hawaii fans sitting in Sect. 112 at the 40 yd line behind our Warrior bench. The ticket office told me they can all go down to row 1 of that section to watch our team do the haka (20-30 minutes before kickoff and after the game). Everyone wear green and cheer loud.

Tailgate invitation: Rice University has decided to reserve a tailgate area for Hawaii fans. It will be in the West Lot 2/3. Look for the Hawaii State flag. Gates open at 3pm. We have people bringing poke, laulau, adodo (not sure what kine), pancit, lumpia, and lomo lomi salmon.
Pete will be bringing a sound system and a huli huli chix grill. Presumably for Owls.

There will also be a grill to use. See y’all there!

  11. pollypicador October 4, 2014 6:40 am

    Trends-

5 of the 6 games this week (Thursday, Friday) the underdog won.

Hawaii is an under dog in this game. I hope this trend continues.

    Attendance

In Rice’s home opener around 17, 000 showed up.

Saturday’s game is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness. The Rice Owls will have a pink “R” decals on their helmet.

    Media coverage of the game

Checked the Houston Chronicle, Rice’s athletic site and found practically nothing regarding write-ups of the Rice-Hawaii game. A look at Rice’s football forum on Scouts (practically non existent, 2 users on line and the last post was around 2 months ago). It’s just like… nobody gives a hoot about football over there. What’s surprising is that the team is off to good recruiting year as I see 7- 3 star commits.

TV coverage of the game-American Sport’s Network (never heard of it).

Wish list for the Rice game-

I hope the Warriors finds their:

1.-untapped potential, identity, fast start, good hands, good play calling, complete game and package
2.-nest, soft boiled egg, prized catch, mojo, good bounces
3.-win, upset, turn around, victory pose, victory formation

    Final notes-

It should be a good game for the Warriors. The team had a good week of practice, traveled well arriving in Houston early Thursday morning (players should be less jet lagged) and are coming off a bye week. On paper it looks to be around an even matchup where it’s my hope that Hawaii has that something (heart, pride) extra to carry themselves over the top.

  12. gigi-hawaii October 4, 2014 6:57 am

I expect to enjoy this game!
Hubby and I will listen to 1420 radio at 1 pm.
Bring home the big W, boys!
    Yay, Warriors!

  13. skycap October 4, 2014 6:57 am

Coach Chow, should add this QB, & WR, to his traveling roster, You just never know they maybe able to help the team Win !!!! http://www.warriorinsider.com/2014/09/another-training-tradition-beach-football/

  14. Wes'side Warrior October 4, 2014 7:17 am

    Morning, Gang!

    Let’s go, Warriors!

No let that QB or RB buckle-loose… especially around da edges!

Come on, Offense! Looking for that Road W!!!

  15. $ October 4, 2014 7:25 am

Norm Chow’s first road win. The Rainbows can win this with their defense.

  16. hatakeman October 4, 2014 7:25 am

“When under duress, your accuracy suffers sometimes” TV commentator on Texas A&M quarterback when he threw a pick.

  17. eMpTy October 4, 2014 7:34 am

Gigi-Hawaii, you and your hubby should go to Giovanni Pastrami to watch the game. Good food and atmosphere. I used to go there when I lived in Honolulu. Now I go to Peggy’s Place in Hilo for pay-per-view.

  18. islandman October 4, 2014 7:44 am

#10 — someone said that the actual turnstile attendance is lower, around 7 to 8,000 or something like that.

  19. gigi-hawaii October 4, 2014 7:55 am

    Empty,

Thanks for the tip, but I think we will just stay home.
I don’t like crowds that much.

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

  21. islandman October 4, 2014 8:00 am

Arizona QB Anu Solomon’s father Jarrett was an All State linebacker for Farrington in 1993, per Ferd (and played for San Jose St. ) His father wanted him to be a linebacker.

He moved from Honolulu to Las Vegas when he was 10 . Had to adjust because he spoke mainly Pidgin English then. Inspired by Mariota at a Vince Passas camp at St. Louis as mentioned by Tempmanoa on the blog yesterday.

” He hopes to someday mean as much to Hawaii as Mariota does. ‘ I’m doing this for them, ‘ Solomon said. ”

SET IKAIKA FREE to make plays. Let’s Go Bows!

  23. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 8:23 am

lol what is this “set ikaika free” crap? he already has been free for about four games now. UH will get wins when the qb plays in the context of their offense (and also has a completion percentage over 40 something percent), not when woolsey is just running around making any kind on the field.

  24. Ipu Man October 4, 2014 8:23 am

    Tighten your jock straps…

  25. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2014 8:29 am

Gordy Shaw visited with offensive linemen Sean Shigematsu, Dave Lefotu, Kody Afusia and Frank Loyd Jr. in the hotel lobby this morning.
Shaw still coaches for UH — University of Houston.
He was wearing a red “UH” polo shirt.
    Shaw recruited those four.
“And Ben Clarke, too,” Shaw reminded.
Clarke attended UH as a part-time student in 2011 while grayshirting. He joined the Warriors in January 2012.

  26. Boolakanaka October 4, 2014 8:30 am

Aloha all! Damn, Mississippi putting it on A&M–I like it…..

  27. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2014 8:33 am

    Pollypicador:
It appears the Rice beat writer also covers Houston.
Houston played on Thursday, so he’s had a busy week.

  29. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2014 8:35 am

I drove past Rice Stadium. There were signs cheering the Owls lining University Avenue.
They might not have the numbers, but they do have spunk.

  30. Boolakanaka October 4, 2014 8:44 am

ST…Bush Sr, lives around the block from Rice, you should stop-by and give him one shout-out.

  31. 3-Prong October 4, 2014 8:45 am

Lol 4-Prong, you cheap sale my screen name and got nothing better to do than antagonize people. You funny.

Go Bows! Oh, and SET IKAIKA FREE!

  32. Andrew October 4, 2014 8:54 am

Is anyone going down to Big City Diner @ Ward where the Sports Animals are having their show?

  33. pollypicador October 4, 2014 9:12 am

It’s always a great feeling reading how Hawaii fans travel to road games to support the team.

    It’s totally awesome.

Forget the hoops and hurdles, won-loss record, distance.. some fans (near and far) show up to support the team on the road. Hats off, man.

I read post#3. Awesome. We have 208 in our group (nice)…we’ll be sitting right behind the Warrior bench cheering the team on (great)…look for the Hawaii State Flag at our tailgate (prideful sight)…there will be poke and huli huli chicken (yum).

I am just so complimentary of the passion.

And I think others would echo this statement.

Every so often when the TV pans on the Hawaii section during the road games it’s just gives me chicken skin to see the faithful supporting the team. Keep it up. Hats off twice.

  34. 3-Prong October 4, 2014 9:27 am

Awesome pollypicador, enjoy. Yell loud so we can hear you guys on tv!

  35. Bryson October 4, 2014 9:29 am

Anyone have a streaming link…The last one for the Colorado game was awesome…

  36. warriorfan2 October 4, 2014 9:44 am

Great to hear that Coach Shaw stopped by. One can only imaging where these boys would be in this stage of their career if Coach Chow had the fore-sight to keep him. The OL would have improve 200% in their third and crucial year of development and would be 200% better this year.
One of the best in the business.
Lastly, if he stayed, Lefotu and Loyd would not be treated like second class citizen in their Senior year.
    Go Bow Pound the rice

  37. cocobean October 4, 2014 9:56 am

I’m really expecting the UH D to take another step forward.

I’m curious to see how the coaches used the bye week to improve the offense. They’ve talked about improving the execution on what they’ve already been doing and the need for the QBs to step up. Besides all that i can’t wait to see what they’ve added.

I’m guessing(hoping) UH comes out in a 4 wide on their first series.

  38. UHfan808 October 4, 2014 9:58 am

    Good morning, Tsai-kos!!!

Happy Game Day is HEA!!! Yahoooooo!!! 😀

Have a good game and Pound da Rice, Warriors!! GOOOOOO WARRIORS!!

    Have a good day, everyone!!

  39. cocobean October 4, 2014 10:11 am

#36. Agree about Shaw. He was a teacher/recruiter, could do both. He was so stoic when the injury bug hit his unit. The man knew how to make lemonade.

Say what you like about Coach Mac. He knew how to pick good coaches.

  40. SteveM October 4, 2014 10:14 am

    Good game day everyone!

    Re:#3
Mahalo to tom-warriornation for getting the word out on the tailgate early (starts around now).
Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes for the stadium tailgate all week, and tom was a central figure in linking known Tsai-kos. Turns out that the UHAA tailgate at a restaurant was cancelled and A-House’s tour group is invited to the potluck tailgate.

    GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!

hawaii… forever n ever…giving up a big plays.. that has to be fixed…

  75. hatakeman October 4, 2014 2:38 pm

After watching the Ole Miss v Alabama and Miss St v Texas A&M games this morning, I would classify Hawaii’s offense as looking like a DIII team. I didn’t say DII because I did not want to be insulting to the DII schools who clearly play better.

  76. nutmegger October 4, 2014 2:39 pm

Well if D shuts down Rice in 2nd half like they have done in previous games and if O can put a couple of drives together …

  77. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2014 2:41 pm

offense is not working huh…there is sumthing missing in ‘coach’ formula ??
    like udub..one touchdown n out…

  78. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2014 2:44 pm

the D has been good in the 2nd half… but if they give up one or two big plays in the.. 2nd half…we are goners 4 sure…

  79. tanman October 4, 2014 2:47 pm

    Put Graham in?

  80. Z October 4, 2014 2:51 pm

Ole Miss has a really good qb.

  81. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2014 2:53 pm

there is no ‘spark’ there at QB….SHAME.. ALL THE TIME HE SPENT TAKING THE MAJORITY OF THE SNAPS.. SPRING BALL ETC.. N STILL nothing to show on the scoreboard..

  82. azwarrior22 October 4, 2014 2:59 pm

Put Graham IN; Woosley isn’t the answer.

  94. azwarrior22 October 4, 2014 3:15 pm

  96. nutmegger October 4, 2014 3:18 pm

  99. Andrew October 4, 2014 3:32 pm

  106. nutmegger October 4, 2014 3:41 pm

    Harding punt.
    Rice on their 10.
Defense has got to bring it.

  107. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2014 3:41 pm

interception now would be nice 4 a td huh…

  108. tanman October 4, 2014 3:44 pm

Is it just me or do you feel that:

    1) we ran on first down every single time.
    2) woolsey got sack or made bad throw on third and long.
    3) we are still missing fg kicks.
    4) def are being count on again and again and it may be asking for too much.

I am afraid we may ended up losing by 3 points again.

  109. nutmegger October 4, 2014 3:45 pm

    Lakalaka run 11 yards, 1st and 10 on 43

  117. hatakeman October 4, 2014 3:51 pm

Run, run, run. And again. Chow’s ball control game. Pass incomplete. Punt. This has become a familiar theme, game to game.

  118. tanman October 4, 2014 3:51 pm

How many times can Defense hold? Woolsey needs to be better!!! Much much better!!!!

  119. nutmegger October 4, 2014 3:51 pm

    3 and out.
    Woolsey incomplete pass

  120. nutmegger October 4, 2014 3:53 pm

  138. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2014 4:03 pm

Wait, I didn’t know Tank Hopkins still had eligibility left…

  139. DoubleB October 4, 2014 4:04 pm

Too much already… sick of this type of games.

  140. tanman October 4, 2014 4:05 pm

    I think it’s over…

  141. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:05 pm

    Ikaika sucks, Chow sucks.

  142. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2014 4:06 pm

Need 2 yards, pass the ball when you don’t have a QB that can pass. Yay!

  143. tanman October 4, 2014 4:06 pm

If only we have a QB who can play… We could have been 4-1 or 5-0 but we are going to be 1-4 and we all know why. Right now, we need a miracle.

  144. HiFlyer October 4, 2014 4:07 pm

2:05 left, rice with the ball

  145. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:08 pm

    We lost again. Yeah!

  146. DoubleB October 4, 2014 4:08 pm

Until the politicians and upper campus get their heads out of their butts…status quo.

  147. hatakeman October 4, 2014 4:08 pm

Chow’s game strategy doomed us. Need coaching change.

  148. Andrew October 4, 2014 4:09 pm

I cannot fathom why they did not start use the timeout earlier

  149. tanman October 4, 2014 4:10 pm

Timeout should have been used during that third down.

  150. Andrew October 4, 2014 4:10 pm

    Using

  151. Bugaz October 4, 2014 4:10 pm

    Long season

  152. HiFlyer October 4, 2014 4:10 pm

How many times did Woolsey get sacked today?

  153. tanman October 4, 2014 4:11 pm

Hawaii wanted fried rice. But rice cooked Hawaii instead.

  154. seasider October 4, 2014 4:12 pm

How long will Chow wait before making a change…Is Graham that bad that Woosley

  155. sl1322 October 4, 2014 4:12 pm

Time for change all the way around.

  156. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:13 pm

14 points is unacceptable but not a surprise when I heard who was our starting qb.

  157. Mytake October 4, 2014 4:13 pm

FIRE CHOW NOW! FIRE THE HIRING COMITTEE WHO KNOW CRAP! LOOK WHERE THE SENTIMENTAL PICK GOT US! THIS PROGRAM IS GETTING RUN INTO NON EXISTENCE!

  158. Andrew October 4, 2014 4:13 pm

Sorry but losing to Rice is embarrassing. I know they won the CUSA championship last year but still.

  159. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:14 pm

If Woosley is the best qb they have, that’s scary.

  160. tanman October 4, 2014 4:14 pm

    Rice rubbed it in!? 🙁

  161. oneseason October 4, 2014 4:14 pm

When coach Chow initially set his coaching priorities, QB and WR coaches were not high on the list. 3 years and still no OC. UH didn’t invest sufficiently in offensive coaching. $99 for 7 home games seems about right … if you like a good tragedy.

  162. Marleysdad October 4, 2014 4:15 pm

    Hahahahahaha!!!!!

  163. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2014 4:15 pm

    Tank Hopkins again! Yay!

  164. tanman October 4, 2014 4:15 pm

Fried Rice vs Chow Fun… Chow Fun lost.

  165. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:15 pm

    TD Rice!

  166. Bugaz October 4, 2014 4:16 pm

    Ouch

  167. jeezy33 October 4, 2014 4:16 pm

Our coaching staff is terrible.. inexperience so obvious today.. decent game plan, no ability to make an adjustment.

  168. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:16 pm

At least it was another moral victory.

  169. HiFlyer October 4, 2014 4:17 pm

    The Fat Lady sings.

  170. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:17 pm

“Ikaika is our best qb to win” Yeah right!!!

  171. Marleysdad October 4, 2014 4:18 pm

That last play sums up Woolsey in one play.

  172. KdaGreat October 4, 2014 4:18 pm

So now what? 21 unanswered points by a crappy rice team? 15 straight road losses in a game they shoulda won easily. To all the Tsaikos? Now what?

  173. kapakahi October 4, 2014 4:18 pm

Feelin’ tired…….of watchin’ this same re-run……over and over…….again.

    Can’t score…….can’t win.

  174. tanman October 4, 2014 4:19 pm

    Bitter end.

  175. Marleysdad October 4, 2014 4:19 pm

Anybody want to buy tickets for the remaining games?

  176. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:19 pm

    FIRE CHOW. I’m over it.

  177. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2014 4:19 pm

That last throw wasn’t even in the field of play and he wasn’t even under pressure.

  178. nutmegger October 4, 2014 4:19 pm

    Good Night.

    That was painful.

  179. Z October 4, 2014 4:19 pm

SOS. Seems like coach has no clue.

  180. KdaGreat October 4, 2014 4:21 pm

All you tsaikos thinking being positive will help win games? What a joke! Get real and face reality! Quarterback sucks…offensive guru my A s s!!

  181. Bugaz October 4, 2014 4:22 pm

    So difficult to stay positive

  182. WarriorsFan October 4, 2014 4:22 pm

If been a supporter for Chow since he’s been hired but after today’s game. .. I’m sorry but we need a new coach and staff. We’ve got talent on our team but no coaches… Go Warriors!

  183. Bugaz October 4, 2014 4:23 pm

    Go Wahine!!!

  184. kapakahi October 4, 2014 4:24 pm

    #176,

    Buy ’em???

Won’t even be able to give ’em away for free!

  185. Hisao45 October 4, 2014 4:24 pm

Hats off to the D…but seriously….we need a change at QB.

  186. Z October 4, 2014 4:24 pm

Everyone knows that they can go over the top on us. They also know that we can’t.

  187. tanman October 4, 2014 4:25 pm

It is a bad lost because we were leading for three quarters and everybody has high hopes and we were let down in the last quarter. How many times we were teased… Either we fell behind and came back and failed OR leading all the way until close to the end of the game and lose it! Is it bad coaching? Is it bad QB plays? Is it just hard luck? One thing I am certain, it is not Defense or Special Team… they did good… Defense was on the field TOO TOO LONG because of the bad offensive plays.

  188. Marleysdad October 4, 2014 4:25 pm

#184, not even one spam musubi?

  189. 808 October 4, 2014 4:26 pm

1-4. Next comes the MWC. Tough loss again.

  190. Bugaz October 4, 2014 4:26 pm

We get um next week 24-17 Warriors

  191. jeezy33 October 4, 2014 4:28 pm

Can’t believe I predicted 4 wins this year..

  192. DoubleB October 4, 2014 4:28 pm

Unless they make a change… no more season tickets for me. I love to go to the games with my 8yr old son. He is a big fan, but even he is getting tired of this. Maybe i need to save the season ticket money and buy him a new surfboard. Just go beach on Saturdays. Free fun and entertainment. 🙂

  193. ArcumFortis October 4, 2014 4:28 pm

I feel bad for these players. It would be best and most dignified if coach Chow simply resigned. He has been unable to move the program in a positive direction. At this stage it is very unlikely that much will be different in the future. The offensive play calling is indeed offensive. I could support a fake field goal against Washington, but against Rice it boggles my mind. At one stage the coach did not know what down it was. I can see these things happening on occasion but unfortunately there is a pattern of ineptitude that needs to be recognized.

At some stage a man simply needs to honest with himself and know that he cannot do the job he has been tasked with doing. It now becomes a test of Ben Jay and his capacity to move ahead and make the change that is needed to salvage something of the season and the program moving ahead. A sad and demoralizing situation. I’m glad I get to return to my life and don’t have to show up for practice next week. I feel sorry for these young men who do have to show up next week and keep trying to buy into a plan that has not worked and seems unlikely to do otherwise.

  194. oneseason October 4, 2014 4:29 pm

I wonder if PPV receipts (commercial and residential) are consistently declining year to year. Bars probably have to buy the game, but radio coverage is a pretty attractive option for fans at home.

  195. MattyBoy October 4, 2014 4:29 pm

You know what I’m afraid of? Even if Chow Von Appen happens to lose the rest of the games here on out, Bad Job will still keep him and Chow will be here another year. Such a scary thought.

  196. Old School Dave October 4, 2014 4:29 pm

Pains me to say, but Ben Jay needs to take action and name Kevin Clune interim head coach. At least he knows what the hell he’s doing. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

  197. KdaGreat October 4, 2014 4:30 pm

Tanman…you sound ridiculous saying what everyone else has been saying for years. if you cant see it then your the _____. You sound like a broken record, what to do about it IS THE QUESTION…F u k n SUX!!

  198. MattyBoy October 4, 2014 4:30 pm

I seriously hope the athletic director fires Chow Von Appen. If not, then the athletic director should be fired too!

  199. kapakahi October 4, 2014 4:30 pm

So much for recruiting in Texas……

  200. Down with... October 4, 2014 4:33 pm

Rice, Fresno St, San Jose St, and UNLV are all ranked below UH in the CBS Bottom 25 (3 Sept). With one FCS win so far, that still leaves 3 bottom 25 that haven’t beaten us. 4 wins doesn’t seem out of the question.

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/24731805/the-bottom-25-maction-dominates-the-rankings

  203. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:34 pm

I never had high hopes when they only scored 7 points in the first half.

  204. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2014 4:35 pm

it is kinda sad… cuz we had 2 weeks to prepare this mediocre team..
BJ can’t fire coach.. he needs approval….

  205. Hisao45 October 4, 2014 4:37 pm

@marleysdad…Ill take a spam musubi for my season ticket…lol

  206. Mytake October 4, 2014 4:38 pm

DON’T FORGET TO WEAR YOUR “IT’S CHOW TIME” TEE SHIRTS!!! THANK YOU STEERING COMITTEE! WITH ALLIES LIKE YOU, WHO NEEDS ENEMIES! THATS OK THO! HIRE WHO YOU KNOW. THATS THE IMPORTANT THING! ITS CHOWS TIME!!! SCREW THE PROGRAM!!!!

  207. 9thisland@msn October 4, 2014 4:40 pm

It seemed liked the offensive play calling for this game ven more conservative then it’s been in the past games this season.

  208. ArcumFortis October 4, 2014 4:40 pm

Well on the bright side there will be plenty of good seats available for future games, the traffic will not be a problem. There will be lots of space for tailgating. Also those local HS kids who are on the bubble in terms of playing at the next level may have a good chance to get scholarships. Attendance at Wahine volleyball will benefit as will men’s basketball.

  209. Inyoface October 4, 2014 4:43 pm

Well you know Bobbay I saw the kids gave it all they got, I saw it in their eyes Bobbay. That’s all I can ask of them, the loss means nothing Bobbay.

  210. 808 October 4, 2014 4:54 pm

UH saw success during Dick Tomey era. They saw success during the Bob Wagner era. In came Von Appen and UH saw 0-12 season and a 5-31 record for a three year period. June Jones then took UH to heights that may never be reached again. And now, UH is in an era where losing games are becoming a given week after week. The games may be close but a loss is a loss. It’s hard to be positive with such lack of success.

It’s going to be harder for the players because they have not tasted wins on a regular basis. Seems like UH is going backwards in their progress and their ability to compete and win. Just a thought, maybe UH admin should rename the football team and go back to the fighting deans. Interesting to see how the season will unfold. It will be even more interesting to see if there are any changes. Chow time started with so much hype. Two seasons and 5 games into his tenure and where is UH football? I’d like to think UH could still turn this thing around. But,….

  211. hatakeman October 4, 2014 5:00 pm

The offense was pathetic. Ikaika was 12/27 for 127 yds. But Graham never saw game time. What a dummy I’ve been for thinking Chow would turn things around this season. I actually thought this would be a 7-game winning season.

  212. HiFlyer October 4, 2014 5:04 pm

Okay, for all of you that say fire Chow now who do you propose they hire to replace him, and be realistic you know the money situation here.

  213. ArcumFortis October 4, 2014 5:04 pm

Back in the Von Appen era my season ticket hui had to implement certain strategies to allow us continue to attend the games and not be driven mad. So we developed a game wherein we would not allow ourselves to be upset by anything that happened. So when something really outrageous and inept would happen in the game this would call for the activation extraordinary capacities. It worked and helped to pass the time until the inevitable happened and changes were made. It feels like it is time to dust off those old ways. Coach Von Appen was eventfully sent on his way, things improved and got interesting again. Feels like we are in similar situation now where special measures are needed just to go and watch the games. Of course one could just not show up but, for me, I feel a commitment to these young men who have signed on and given much. I still feel strongly that they deserve my support and respect. So it’s time for the Von Appen plan.

  214. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 5:05 pm

Why the hell was woolsey still in the game?

  215. sl1322 October 4, 2014 5:07 pm

I was pulling for Chow to succeed, but it’s clear change is needed. But even with a new coach, will they have all the tools they need to succeed?

  216. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 5:07 pm

oneseason: this is what UH football has become. we’re so terrible that ending the season with 4 wins against bottom of the barrel teams will be a HUGE accomplishment.

  217. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 5:09 pm

UH vs Mililani. I think UH get chance. Idk about punahou though, but in the star advertiser top 10, UH should be able to crack the top 5. They’re guaranteed a semifinalist for states. Guaranteed.

  218. cocobean October 4, 2014 5:11 pm

I didn’t see the game. Just caught the last 5 minutes on radio and now listening to fan phones. Judging from what I’m heard Woolsey didn’t have a good game. Several people have mentioned giving Graham a shot. What scares me is Graham couldn’t beat out Higgins for the backup job.

Is OC 16 going to show a replay. I’d like to see for myself what went on.

  219. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2014 5:16 pm

I hope Chow knows its OK to not utilize a tight end on EVERY SINGLE play. Ewaliko can come in for more 4-wide sets.

Our tightends have not become a passing threat on offense and mixing it up with more 4-wide sets may help to spread the field more and give more options to pass to.

  220. ArcumFortis October 4, 2014 5:19 pm

#218….4 prong…..good idea but because UH would be in the ILH they wouldn’t have to face Punahou until the playoffs. I just wonder though if UH will have to pay for travel costs and post game malasadas for their opponents.

  221. Warrior World October 4, 2014 5:20 pm

Hope the best for Gaetano DeMattei and Julian Gener. UH needs those guys back on the field.

  223. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 5:23 pm

ArcumFortis: that’s an EXCELLENT point. I wonder if the UH athletic department will have the funds to pay for that? recruiting against punahou and mililani will be tough.

  224. ArcumFortis October 4, 2014 5:27 pm

#222, 225……oops meant OHA not ILH

  225. Z October 4, 2014 5:28 pm

    Put in Higgins.

  226. manoa obake October 4, 2014 5:30 pm

From the beginning of the Chow Error I was not behind this coach because he did not utilize the kids he had. Alot of them transferred out and are doing well in other progarms.
At what point do we tolerate the team losses and financial losses to the point where
    we will be out millions.
Does the Chow contract state he gets paid no matter the condition is?
    Where is the product?
Man up coach, call it a career, spare us , the faithful fans of UH.

  227. ArcumFortis October 4, 2014 5:32 pm

Oops, oops…..222, 225,226….I mean OIA…..these UH games are making me prematurely senile

  228. Ipu Man October 4, 2014 5:33 pm

A game of inches. Need longer arms.

  229. 808 October 4, 2014 5:35 pm

I think UH is in such a financial disarray that UH will honor the 5 year contract signed with Chow. Saving money and cutting cost will be UH administration plan of attack.

Oregon has Phil Knight. UH has no one closely tied to UH to provide the financial support it really needs. The players deserve to win. But UH does have a cap on their resources and what they can spend on football. Maybe, this a 5 year learning lesson for UH administration. Next time, they should wisely when they choose the next coach. Of course, hindsight is 20/20. At least this year’s defense is much better.

Hope the next game will end with a UH win. Go Warriors!

  230. Ipu Man October 4, 2014 5:37 pm

Woosley tossed TWO touchdowns to Harding, a good combo.

  231. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 5:43 pm

woolsey went 12-27 for 117 yards. there is no progression here. this is the fourth straight game of pitiful yardage and a completion percentage in 40s.

  232. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 5:47 pm

But boy, what a crazy week of college football. Lots of upsets: Arizona state stunning USC off a 43 yard hail mary with USC players just standing around and staring at the ball. Ole Miss beating alabama. oregon losing to arizona. TCU taking out OU. Notre Dame beating stanford. And so on. Just a crazy week. But amidst all this craziness it’s good to know that norm chow and UH performs consistently, day in and day out. completion percentage in the 40s, good ole “run, run, incomplete pass, punt” play calling, and losses. lots of losses.

It’s good to know that the world may change, but UH football won’t.

  233. Inyoface October 4, 2014 6:11 pm

I got mad and don’t mean anything personal to coach Chow or Ikaika. Just a fustrated fan and sad I even care that much but this team is my pride and soul even though it’s just a game.

  234. Inyoface October 4, 2014 6:18 pm

It’s sad though it really is.

  235. beans October 4, 2014 6:50 pm

encouraging 1st quarter, disappointing 2nd half. Offence’s running looked better, passing game even with 2 touchdowns looked dismal. Only 1 pass attempted to the tight end and it was off target. Again a poor game scheme. Surprising coming from a coach that has been considered a offensive guru. All the boys played their hearts out.Offense coaches need to get better. The season is not over we are just now going into conference play. “pick up the pieces”!

  236. HawaiiMongoose October 4, 2014 6:53 pm

Time to bring the Chow era to an end.

  237. Derek October 4, 2014 6:58 pm

I wasn’t far off. Had Rice 28-17. Change da quarterback!!!! UH had plenty of chances to score, but couldn’t sustain drives enough. But, that’s our team, we always find a way to lose.

  238. MattO October 4, 2014 7:12 pm

Sadly had to miss the game. Logged on and saw we lost to Rice. ’nuff already. Time for a change.

  239. Fei Jai October 4, 2014 7:22 pm

It’s Chow Time, baby! Yes! Norm is the man and he one football genius, la dat.

Two more years for Norm, please.

We believe, said the lady from Kauai.

  240. Marleysdad October 4, 2014 7:28 pm

In other news, Trevor Davis is badass.

  241. PONO October 4, 2014 7:35 pm

Trevor Davis with a 3TD night so far for Cal

  242. whitey October 4, 2014 7:48 pm

Outlook for this season is indeed very gloomy like the weather we are having right now. Hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel after today, so no sense getting all worked up or nuha. Just wish the rainbow warriors best of luck and hope the gods are good to you for the rest of the season.

  243. pollypicador October 4, 2014 7:51 pm

Gordy must of been laughing his head off. Rolo, too. Skip that-the entire nation.

O-line gives up 7 sacks and 12 tackles for losses.

The o-line was way more pitiful than the QB.

There are no silver linings watching this mess.

The fan phones, one after the next, “What does Chow see in his QB”…”This isn’t working”…”That was frustrating to watch”…”There’s a reason why Chow was never a HC (winner)”…”Why not give other QB’s a chance, it can’t be any worse than what we’re seeing”… “At least there’s wahine volleyball to look forward to(ha-ha).”

Chow’s stock is at an all time low. And what frustrates me is that there is no urgency in his act. He stands on the sidelines during the game like he’s in a different time zone. Show some emotion? Fire up the troops? Have his players cease the moment? Nope. Help his QB? Nope. Frustrate some of the Hawaii fans? Always.

Chow’s next act is this Tuesday. There is a Call the Coach Show (Ala Moana Hotel). It should be a doozy. In the meantime the media needs to start blasting Chow’s act.

  244. cocobean October 4, 2014 8:14 pm

pollypic. What’s this about the media? Were you the caller on fan phones yelling “fire Gary D, Bobby C, etc?

  245. whitey October 4, 2014 8:24 pm

pollypic, not nitpicking, but did you really mean “cease” instead of “seized”. Get big difference.

  246. Bryson October 4, 2014 8:34 pm

Chow just gotta hand in his play call in sheet, when we move the ball it looks like a whole different offense play set is being called when we don’t move the ball it’s three dives and out I call that “Chow Ball”…seriously though Chow is better of letting Jordan Wynn call the plays

I think the reality is that in order for UH to field competitive and winning football teams, they need a head coach and staff who collectively are able to develop and groom recruits to their full potential. Since UH cannot consistently compete with the big name schools to recruit blue chip players, the onus is on the coaching staff to develop their recruits. Not all coaches have the skills to do this. I don’t possess the knowledge as to whether the present coaching staff possess this particular skill set but perhaps the more akamai contributors to this blog have some insights in this area.

    w

Nitpicking is good, especially when one learns something.

I’ve made that mistake at least a dozen times over the years.

Glad you caught, brought it to my attention.

No. But I think everyone is going off. I’ve been around the Animals-they know their football.

Trevor Davis, former Warrior scored 4 touchdowns for Cal tonight in a 60-59 win over Washington State. Two of the touchdowns were on kickoff returns. Dang!!!!!

maybe by the start of next season, he can get his completion percentage up to 48%.

Relax, people. Give norm a chance. Give him at least two more years to get this right. Some said he needed three, at least. I say he going need at least five, maybe seven.

His body language says “no can”, and his record says “no can”, but I can tolerate 2 more losing seasons. We endured three already, ah? What’s two more?

polyp. 7 sacks, 12 tackles for loss? To me that’s more significant than the passing stats. It indicates Rice must have been in the backfield quite a bit that caused some hurries and throwaways. Hard for an offense to get rhythm with that many negative plays.

I didn’t see the game so I’m guessing it was a combination of things. The O line must have had a bad game. Woolsey may have held onto the ball too long at times. The play calling was bad in the sense they could anticipate early on what type of play and where it would be run. We may have been well scouted and the D read their keys well.

Only so much really top notch talent comes through our team. Terrible to lose two outstanding players in Trevor Davis– everyone knew this guy was terrific– speed and hands and height and route running– 98 yard TD return, and three other TD’s today– and Ben Dew the guy who started 12 games as a freshman for Chow at left tackle– now starting for Baylor– the offensive lineman we have always wanted– the guy Tomey said was our most talented player. David Graves was our best quarterback prospect in 2012 and Chow tried to change him to safety. There are some surprising stories behind what happened to these guys.

No. 8 UCLA lost to Utah 30 – 28. UCLA with Klemm and Ulbrich as coaches, but they do have a 4-1 record so far.

  256. islandman October 4, 2014 9:37 pm

#256 — Trevor also had a 100 yd kickoff return for a TD and the game winning TD , a 51 yard reception.

What’s the story on him leaving UH or players just leave sometimes for various reasons ?

  257. islandman October 4, 2014 9:47 pm

#255 — In the game stats, i notice a sack is considered a tackle for loss. So there were five other tackles for loss plus the seven sacks to make the 12 tackles for loss .

“maybe by the start of next season, he can get his completion percentage up to 48%.”

Sorry, but that is hilarios. How much practice would require that kind of increase?

I don’t believe this state will do everything it can to right this ship. Money will always be an issue. How long can the athletic department continue operating in deficit?

  259. Derek October 4, 2014 10:14 pm

    Woolsey’s season’s stats:

Completion percentage: 45.9%, 3rd from the bottom.
Yards per attempt: 4.8, 2nd from the bottom.
QB rating: 86.8, worst in the country. By comparison, Mariota is 202, 2nd in the country.

It’s not rocket science as to why we have lost 4 games.

  260. 4-Prong October 4, 2014 10:16 pm

woolsey is awful. he’s like a crappy polynesian tim tebow.

    Rice at 02:55
1st and 10 at RICE43 RICE drive start at 02:55.
1st and 10 at RICE43 DILLARD, Darik rush for 4 yards to the RICE47 (STEVENSON, Taz).
2nd and 6 at RICE47 DILLARD, Darik rush for 6 yards to the UH47, 1ST DOWN RICE (SAMIA, Moses).
1st and 10 at UH47 DILLARD, Darik rush for 19 yards to the UH28, 1ST DOWN RICE (TAIMATUIA, TJ).
    1st and 10 at UH28 Timeout Hawai`i, clock 01:27.
1st and 10 at UH28 DILLARD, Darik rush for 4 yards to the UH24 (TAIMATUIA, TJ).
    2nd and 6 at UH24 Timeout Hawai`i, clock 01:20.
2nd and 6 at UH24 DILLARD, Darik rush for 5 yards to the UH19 (TAIMATUIA, TJ).
    3rd and 1 at UH19 Timeout Hawai`i, clock 01:04.
3rd and 1 at UH19 TEAM rush for loss of 12 yards to the UH31.
    4th and 13 at UH31 Timeout Rice, clock 00:18.

At 02:55 Rice first and 10 at their 43 yard line. Hawaii has 3 time outs.

Rice runs the ball for a 4 yard gain. Hawaii watches the clock run down.

I’m thinking call timeout…why let the clock run down…gather the defense (grab a breather, call a defensive play) and try to stop Rice on second down. No. No timeout, nothing. The coaches just watched the clock run down. Why?
