Congrats to Dave Shoji and all of his assistant coaches and players through the years.

It was a collective effort to get to 1,107.

Back to Oregon. At the Wild Duck establishment, the specialty is beer-cheese soup. Say it fast, and that’s all you need on a deserted island. Well, maybe VooDoo Donuts makes it a complete meal.

  9. Kapahulu September 7, 2013 7:38 am

Yesterday we had Lunch at the Local Boyz Grinds at the Oregon State Campus.

I had the Loco Moco which was pretty good.

  10. Bugaz September 7, 2013 7:39 am

Yes congrats all Vball Wahine participants and staff, and mahalo coach Shoji

Good morning everybody! Game day, great day.

    Huzzit Kapahulu.

  13. Brad September 7, 2013 7:39 am

Love the Oregon environment. Air so clean, beautiful trees with the color turning in the fall. Enough of that it’s game day! Go Rainbow Warriors!

  14. Bugaz September 7, 2013 7:40 am

    Good luck Warriors! Beat OSU!

  15. Kapahulu September 7, 2013 7:41 am

Congatulations to Dave Shoji and all the former Wahine Volleyball players over the years that helped to contribute to the record. Awesome accomplishment.

  16. papajoe2 September 7, 2013 7:42 am

Kapahulu~ so you made it for the game. Tie in to any cruise?

  17. Bugaz September 7, 2013 7:42 am

    Beat UCLA!!!

  18. chopsueyboy September 7, 2013 7:43 am

Game Day! Go Rainbow Warriors! Defense create a dam the beavers can’t penetrate.

  19. Kapahulu September 7, 2013 7:51 am

The key, said Langsdorf, will be to bounce outside and get a little more production instead of “burying it up the middle

Looks like Oregon State will try running outside on UH after watching clips of the UH vs USC game.

  20. Kapahulu September 7, 2013 7:52 am

    Papajoe2,

Not on a cruise this time. Already went on a Cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean in July.

  21. tommui September 7, 2013 7:53 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Congrats to Dave Shoji and the Rainbow Wahine, past and present, who made it possible!

    GO WARRIORS – beat OSU

    GO WAHINE – beat UCLA!

  22. Shoko September 7, 2013 7:55 am

Congrats to Coach Shoji! He should have a bonus incentive in his contract for that milestone achievement.

  23. kawika49 September 7, 2013 7:55 am

  27. NYUHTX September 7, 2013 8:07 am

Today is a real test for Coach Chow. How much improvement can we see on the offensive side this week?

  28. Stephen Tsai September 7, 2013 8:08 am

We were going to go to the soccer match. But we went to a bar … er, I mean, we did research for today’s game instead.

  29. Hank September 7, 2013 8:08 am

Kapahulu and all Tsaikos in Corvallis (sp, but who cares!):

Sitting in the Portland Hilton waiting wasting time until we board the buses.

Yep, we got to the “original” Voodoo yesterday and the pastries are really ono – I got the humongous glazed donut, Mrs A-House ordered 2 chocolate covered cream donuts and Midori ordered the fritter covered with mini Hersey drizzled with chocolate.

Met several former Hawaii residents on the street car, at Rite Aid store, etc. What amazes us is the friendliness of Portlandnites – we were asked by at least a dozen complete strangers if we need help while looking at a map – we must have had the “lost tourist” syndrome.

Seeing a number of Warrior shirts in the lobby and at breakfast.

Portland is nice, but we agreed once is enough.

  34. SteveM September 7, 2013 8:12 am

    Ohhh yes…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. & MRS. STEPHEN TSAI !!!

  38. A-House September 7, 2013 8:18 am

I do hope the “up da middle” against USC was a ploy to throw OSU off.

Still can’t figure out why Chow called so many “up-da-middle plays when USC was stuffing that running play – their D-line was in motion to the right and cut off any chance for UH RB to get past the LOS.

Especially with St Juste (sp) – use his quickness and speed to the outside.

  39. lava September 7, 2013 8:18 am

#5 is post of the day. I’m going to re-read it later to cheer myself up after we’ve lost by 40.

  44. Moocher September 7, 2013 8:25 am

    wahine volleyball = program

rainbow warrior football = seasonal sport

i got a feeling a seasonal sport is being built into a program. when a building is in its beginning stages, it starts with a hole in the ground. in time it will rise for all to see….go bows!

  45. Jack Flash September 7, 2013 8:40 am

    Go Warriors! Beat the beibers.

    Hawaii- 20

  47. Kapahulu September 7, 2013 8:48 am

    Papajoe2

My wife did not make the road trip. She could not get Vacation time off, especially since her boss is on Vacation and she is now in charge.

She and her best friend have season tickets for UH Wahine Volleyball. She texted me pictures of them with Andy Banakowski and also with Ronnie Lott who was also at the UH Wahine Volleyball Game last night.

There are 4 of us Hawaii Boys here on the Road Trip.

Today’s Corvallis Gazette-Times Newspaper reporting that 2 days ago a Storm dumped a record 2.94 inches of rain in Corvallis with Lightning splitting Trees, Frying Electrical Panels and cutting power to thousands of people.

Right now over the Football Stadium, blue skies starting to appear through the clouds.

  51. Haleakala September 7, 2013 8:59 am

    Great accomplishment by Dave Shoji!

Some people are fixtures at an institution. Dave has been at UH for decades and will be remembered by all the people that he has touched.

  52. Kapahulu September 7, 2013 9:05 am

The front page of today’s Corvallis Gazette-Times Newspaper has a picture of a Caucasian Artist painting a Mural on the Exterior of a Building between Second and Third streets on Southwest Monroe Avenue.

The Artist name is Ben Jay.

Here is the link to the picture and story:

  53. Shoko September 7, 2013 9:06 am

Now UH is going to have to think of how to memorialize Shoji when he retires. Thinking maybe a statue in front of the Stanley.

  54. J-FORCE September 7, 2013 9:40 am

Alright rainbows warriors fans making the trip

in Oregon, please cheer as loud as you can for

    our beloved rainbow warriors.

  55. PolyMom September 7, 2013 9:46 am

Congrats to Dave Shoji! He was the Punahou Coach when I was in high school. What an accomplishment he has achieved. But he has to thank his former and current players for reaching this level.

    Go Warriors beat the Beavers!!!

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to Coach Shoji on his historic win. Chicken skin moment.

Congrats to the futbol Na Wahine on their big win yesterday.

Got to meet RainbowCliff last night. Looking forward to enjoying his company today.

Happy birthday to the blog guru and his better half, Wena. Your minions bow down in awe.

    Go Bows!

    Go Wahine!

Be a good Rainbow, Lick a Beaver today. Go Bows! Go Warriors.

  69. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 10:51 am

Dave Aranda’s Wisconsin Defense shut out their second opponent in a row, Tennesee Tech, 48-0. Next week we get to see how good his defense is against Arizona State.

  70. Old School Dave September 7, 2013 11:06 am

Utah State looking impressive against AFA. The refs are trying to keep AFA in the game.

  71. tommui September 7, 2013 11:08 am

PolyMom #56 “Mahalo to Tom Mui and Tom for helping my Hawaii friends with tickets for the UNLV game”.

No thank to me – just passed the ball to Tom K!

Gee, is it Wena’s birthday too? Well, have the other birthday guy take you out when he gets home! Happy birthday Wena!

  72. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 11:20 am

Yep… Utah State’s close game against Utah last week might not have been a season opener fluke. They might be better than advertised. MWC West will be interesting this season. Hope our Warriors can hang in there.

  73. d1shima September 7, 2013 11:30 am

    2-1/2 hours.

    IS IT 2o’clock YET?

  74. d1shima September 7, 2013 11:32 am

Hopefully, the Cal game moves along quickly so the switchover occurs before kickoff. The Utah game went long….takes a while to ring up 70!

  75. d1shima September 7, 2013 11:34 am

    Those Duck hats are Tsick!

  76. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 11:35 am

I think Boise is getting there too… 63-7 with a whole quarter and a half to go.

  77. d1shima September 7, 2013 11:37 am

    *ADVISORY*

FWIW, drive very carefully today. This is the first rain we’ve had in awhile so the roads will be really slick with grease and brake dust.

Make it to and from those TV Gates safely!

  78. DaveLetterMan September 7, 2013 11:41 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

    Happy Birthday ST and Wena!

  79. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 12:10 pm

Oh poo… Utah St is having no problems with Air Force’s option. I was banking on Utah St struggling to defend Air Force for a little while since they did not face an option offense once in 2012 plus this being the 2nd straight road game. Oh well, that’s sports betting for ya.

  80. Bryson September 7, 2013 12:16 pm

Are there any TV Gates Where I Can Catch The Game?

  81. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 12:16 pm

Oregon starters did their part… Now its on to the scary part with betting for Oregon when the scrubs come in to finish the game. At least Virginia kept it close enough for the Duck starters went into the end of the 3rd Q.

  82. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 12:24 pm

    Bryson,

    Check here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/416663748396151/

Otherwise a good crowd is always at hand at Murphy’s.

  83. gobows September 7, 2013 12:27 pm

happy birthday to ST and the mrs.

    anybody recognize this guy?

    http://instagram.com/p/d-Zj5dM2_O/

thats a 545 pound dead lift

he had one of the best punches in hawaii history…infamous for getting ejected at michigan state

  84. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 12:40 pm

San Diego St just got a mercy touchdown vs Ohio St. This game figured to be not close but San Diego did nothing to ease their fan base’s concerns from last weeks embarrassing loss. And Braxton Miller left the game in the 1st quarter.

Other notes… South Carolina would be the best team in the country if they had a decent QB. Conner Shaw is so mistake prone. I still can’t believe Steve Spurrier can’t get a quality QB. He hasn’t had a good college QB since he was at Florida.

  85. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 12:47 pm

Shaw is playin pretty well today but just made an unforced error by coughing up a loose fumble on a scramble which led to Georgia points. Both teams have amazing athletes at the skill positions.

  86. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 12:50 pm

Baylor just seems to get better each year… 70-13 over Buffalo with 10 minutes to play.

  87. dannyp September 7, 2013 12:53 pm

    90

Baylors averaging about 70 pts per game with a 1st year starter. If Chow doesn’t make it past 2014 and we hire anyone but Dino Babers I’m gonna go insane.

  88. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 12:56 pm

Im 2 for 2 FUHA… Told u Utah St and Ohio St.

  89. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 12:56 pm

    Braxton wasn’t even needed

  90. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 12:56 pm

91… I’m all for Babers…. Hawaii offense will be explosive once again… I wanna keep our defensive coaches though

  91. dannyp September 7, 2013 12:59 pm

    94

+1 I love TK and his assistants, they can recruit like hell. Hopefully the 3-3-5 can remedy our problems with the spread.

  92. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 1:01 pm

    95. With the 3-3-5 , Hawaii will need to recruit more athletic LBs… I would even say recruit more safeties and some can bulk up like Aaron Brown to play LB. JGW was a blessing. It beats the hell out of me as to how he wasn’t offered by Pac 12 schools. HE was the Las Vegas defensive player of the year so its not like he was hidden.

  93. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 1:05 pm

Gurley!!! BEst RB I’ve seen since All Day..

  94. al September 7, 2013 1:10 pm

chow will realize soon that he needs to let go of the offense and focus on the overall management of the football program.

he would be best be served by one with some local ties and knows about conventional and spread type offenses. can recruit and could become the heir apparent.

    rolo for example.

  95. Shoko September 7, 2013 1:10 pm

Going to be interesting to see how well TK does against Nevada’s Pistol this year.

  96. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 1:17 pm

    99. I think they do fine… Teams like Fresno, San Jose, and Utah ST would scare me though

  97. slenzi September 7, 2013 1:18 pm

help! Help!! HELP!!! need a website where I can watch the Oregon State game. If anybody knows where it may be streaming please let me know. Its not on ESPN3.

  98. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 1:19 pm

Biggest worry about our D might be our offense… Not sustaining drives long enough and giving up the ball in bad field position… Hope that turns around.

  99. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 1:19 pm

    firstrowus1.eu

  100. Shoko September 7, 2013 1:20 pm

Watching the Cal game and wondering if another PAC12 team will fall to a FCS team.

  101. Shoko September 7, 2013 1:23 pm

    100. Yeah, I think so too. Hard to evaluate how bad the Pack’s o-line is and how much their running game dropped since losing Stephon Jefferson when they played a pretty stout Bruin defense.

  102. Ballpicker September 7, 2013 1:29 pm

    Afternoon all,

I have great memories of Corvallis, Oregon as l was “shipped” up there for school. Kidding aside, it’s a great place to go to school and I enjoyed it after getting over the initial homesick blues.

It’s changed greatly as can be imagined but only for the betterment of the students.

However, having said that, I’ll say let’s go Rainbow Warriors! I can’t say the rest because it would violate my religious beliefs.

Hey DPK, you guys have a great time and drive home safely.

One more thing, happy b day Mr. Tsai.

  103. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 1:30 pm

Hey all, For all who don’t have access to Pac-12 network…

I found a really good stream (HD Quality)of Pac 12 network. But only works for mobile devices (Ipad/iphone) or using a program called VLC… I’m using my iphone with Airplay to stream to my appletv and the picture quality looks great…

If anyone wants the link leave me a comment and email me…. WarriorNY@gmail.com

  104. dannyp September 7, 2013 1:34 pm

    93

I agree we gotta get more athletic but I trust Tuioti/Powell to get those types of players. We already got a gift in JGW and I think another in Drake Miller.

  105. Shoko September 7, 2013 1:35 pm

Almost forgot, Happy Birthday da Tsai-man. 🙂

  106. dannyp September 7, 2013 1:38 pm

    96

Nevada isn’t gonna be able to run on our front imo and since Fajardo doesn’t go vertical that well I expect a lot of screens to counter Kaumeyers aggressive nature.

  107. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 1:44 pm

    dannyp,

If we get to aggressive against Nevada, expect to see the shovel pass… something I wish Chow would incorporate.

  108. Marleysdad September 7, 2013 1:50 pm

Here’s a link to watch the game.

    http://www.feed2all.eu/type/american-football.html

    Lick the beavers!

  109. dannyp September 7, 2013 1:51 pm

    108

Very possible I hope we prep for it. Also Chow doesn’t even run simple bubble screens I doubt he adds the shovel pass :/

  110. Reptile Party September 7, 2013 2:01 pm

  126. gobows September 7, 2013 2:29 pm

    dropped pass on 1st down

  127. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 2:32 pm

JGW blanketing TEs like he does always

  128. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 2:34 pm

@128… true… Wow what a heads up play by Haynes!

  129. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 2:35 pm

Broken play best offense gain of the day.. Haynes can run

  130. gobows September 7, 2013 2:38 pm

    lets see how lataimua does

  131. Claud Sutcliffe September 7, 2013 2:43 pm

WarriorNY’s link works great for I-pad

    Mahalo nui loa!

  132. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 2:48 pm

At this rate, our D is going to be gassed by half time

  133. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 2:48 pm

    DDDDDDDDDDDDD

  134. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 2:50 pm

Oregon St. QB is ridiculously accurate…

  135. PolyMom September 7, 2013 2:50 pm

    Thanks for the link.

    Mahalo plenty!

  136. PolyMom September 7, 2013 2:51 pm

Good first quarter. OSU is the dark horse of the PAC 12.

  137. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 2:52 pm

135.. Easy throws though.. He missed a wide open Cooks early in the game on the PI calls.. Would have been TD with good pass

  138. Kanole September 7, 2013 2:52 pm

Thank you WarriorNY for the link! Got me through the first quarter!

  139. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 2:54 pm

No prob guys… You’re right Jeezy lots of stuff underneath…

  140. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 2:56 pm

    140. That was a nice TD pass though… When you have tall WRs, gotta throw it high like that so DB has no chance

  141. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 2:59 pm

Hawaii needs to take some shots deep… Then we can throw some underneath screens….

  142. Manoa1 September 7, 2013 3:00 pm

Beavers going up and down the field so easy 14-0…it’s gonna be a Blowout.

  143. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 3:01 pm

That short stuff is not going to work unless we get those safeties to drop back deeper

  144. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 3:02 pm

    Damn… Had Haynes open… Graham just isn’t accurate….

  145. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 3:03 pm

    Dang.. getting hard to watch.

  146. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 3:03 pm

    David Griffin got punked there…

  147. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 3:04 pm

    Man that would’ve been a TD…

  148. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 3:04 pm

Our D doesn’t look too bad.. Offense just so bad that D gets 0 rest and bad field position..

  149. obachan September 7, 2013 3:04 pm

    zzzzzzzoffense….long day defense

  150. PolyMom September 7, 2013 3:05 pm

  155. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 3:09 pm

OSU just stacking the box till Hawaii can make a play deep

  156. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 3:10 pm

Graham is going to get HIs WRS killed if he keeps throwing those passes

  157. gobows September 7, 2013 3:12 pm

Way to Go Hawaii! Way to keep fighting!

  195. Buffoman September 7, 2013 3:43 pm

That’s not the Stevenson from Mililani., right?

  196. heluhelu September 7, 2013 3:46 pm

    Buffoman: September 7th, 2013 at 3:43 pm

No. 19 = Jovan Stevenson from Tuscon (Sunnyside HS)

But credit TV analyst for saying Stevenson should’ve been ejected.

  197. heluhelu September 7, 2013 3:47 pm

    Coach Chow was STEAMED.

  198. PolyMom September 7, 2013 3:48 pm

Lakalaka represent the Sons of Oahu.

  199. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 3:51 pm

    AlaWai: I Believe Too! D making the O Believe….

  200. RalphToo September 7, 2013 3:51 pm

Stevenson from Mililani plays for UDub

  201. Buffoman September 7, 2013 3:53 pm

Lakalaka played well. Who is #72. If he’s new on the o-line., after the missed block he’s doing better. O-line need to work on their footwork but they have done much better. Improvement.

  202. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 3:55 pm

    My thoughts so far…

Lakalaka has been very good… Our defense is just amazing…

    Oh and…

NY Jets need to draft OSU QB in next years draft…

  203. heluhelu September 7, 2013 3:58 pm

No update on Daley yet. But he pumped his fist as he was lifted into the ambulance.

  204. AlaWai September 7, 2013 3:59 pm

OL is still in the learning phase. Breaking down film will expose what they need to do. Coach Naeole will get this crew cranking. We have Freaks the OL is becoming the Cranks. RB’s need to explode. Go Bows!

  205. Buffoman September 7, 2013 3:59 pm

Those television announcers are knowledgeable. Hopefully we can stay close throughout and give ourselves an opportunity.

  206. gobows September 7, 2013 4:00 pm

what happened??? did hardings 60 yard punt turn the light on for the hawaii offense? as expected, defense is making plays.

  207. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 4:01 pm

Announcers said Daley just had a concussion.

  208. gobows September 7, 2013 4:01 pm

they said daley’s injury is a concussion.

  209. AlaWai September 7, 2013 4:01 pm

I delayed my TV cast to match 1420. I’m a homey!

  210. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 4:02 pm

    203. OSU?? More like Clemson or Louisville

  211. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 4:02 pm

    What was the spread? Hehehehe

  212. gobows September 7, 2013 4:02 pm

    #72 is david griffin

  213. gobows September 7, 2013 4:04 pm

#214 you cant expect the jets to make a wise decisions in the nfl draft…unless you are a jets fan, then its understandable.

  214. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 4:04 pm

    Jeezy…

LOL… for Jets.. I’m just looking for anyone who can complete passes!

  215. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 4:06 pm

I was just kidding… Andy Murray would be my choice… Though I do really like Taj…

  216. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 4:08 pm

    gobows…

wow i was joking… but ok..

  217. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 4:08 pm

    Back to the game…

  218. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 4:11 pm

    DEEEEEE

  219. gobows September 7, 2013 4:13 pm

dee maggitt is off his game today

  220. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 4:15 pm

Aaron Murray does look solid.. He gets Drew Brees comparisons … I like Boyd based on the new direction NFL is going with these dual threat guys.

But yeah Jets don’t make smart decisions..

  221. gobows September 7, 2013 4:19 pm

dropped pass, would have been a 1st down, 3 and out.

  222. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 4:21 pm

    Aaron… Sorry mistyped…

  223. Wes'side Warrior September 7, 2013 4:31 pm

    Let’s go, Warriorz!

What’s up with this cramps stuff? Dang it.

  224. d1shima September 7, 2013 4:33 pm

Offense needs to respond. Defenders getting drained…need some help.

  225. gobows September 7, 2013 4:34 pm

somebody should cover big mouth cooks

  226. rainbow September 7, 2013 4:41 pm

yah- cramps— UH trainers out of water– need new training crew and offense play caller

  227. AlaWai September 7, 2013 4:43 pm

    D. playing base. Can’t stop them unless you go psycho on the Beaver. Make them feel the PAIN!

  228. AlaWai September 7, 2013 4:44 pm

I hate it when a Beaver smirks at me!

  229. d1shima September 7, 2013 4:44 pm

    Not a good quarter

  230. Wes'side Warrior September 7, 2013 4:45 pm

    That bit…

Let’s go, Warriorz! Get that “4” up in the air! Own it!

  231. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 4:46 pm

I know our offense is still bad but Gener came to play today…. Too bad we only have him 1 more year.

  232. mark muraski September 7, 2013 4:47 pm

Hawai’s offense is really bad. and so it the defense. unfortunatley, unless coach chow gets some true div 1 recruits, hawaii will never compete against any div 1 football teams. hawaiis is junk

  233. gobows September 7, 2013 4:51 pm

16 yards of offense in 2nd half for hawaii

  234. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 4:51 pm

  238. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 4:53 pm

Mmmmmm, Tanioka fresh spicy, washed down with an icy cold Greenie. If we could just get some offense life would be perfect. Hehe

  239. gobows September 7, 2013 4:54 pm

    thank you 44

  240. heluhelu September 7, 2013 4:54 pm

Time of possession: OSU 30 min. Hawaii 16 min.

Eastern Washington put up 46 pts against Beaver d last week.

Good thing Hawaii doesn’t need an OC.

  241. d1shima September 7, 2013 4:56 pm

    Lotsa drops

  242. heluhelu September 7, 2013 4:58 pm

Yet another drop. On 3rd down no less. Lack of offense not Graham’s fault.

  243. PolyMom September 7, 2013 4:59 pm

So many dropped passes. Don’t blame TG.

  244. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:04 pm

Just checked. Didn’t realize. Hawaii has *no* receiver’s coach. So, no OC, no WR coach & we wonder why our offense is lost on Niihau? http://hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=football&

  245. d1shima September 7, 2013 5:04 pm

    Yap

  246. d1shima September 7, 2013 5:04 pm

    Nice cover

  247. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:04 pm

    249. Luke MAtthews is… Hes good too

  248. GA Warrior September 7, 2013 5:06 pm

Just to want to make sure I got my facts right. Last week a FCS school had 637 yards of total offense against Oregon State and after 3 quarters FBS Hawaii has 137 yards of total offense. Man, what a offensive genius Chow is…..if we actually throw the ball downfield pass the first down marker more than three times a game, we might actually have a chance to make a first down. He has taken our program down to levels that are below to where we were with Von Appen. Our defense has 9 of the 27 points we have scored this year. It doesnt matter at all if our defense is any better because we are so awful on offense, no orginality, no downfield game to loosen up the defense and playcalling that is stale. 2 and 11 here we come. How much more of this do you need to see that Chow cannot coach…

  249. DoubleBB September 7, 2013 5:08 pm

    3rd and 20… Auwe!!

  250. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 5:11 pm

Good job D! Let’s Go O. Now or never.

    RRRRRAIN………

  251. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:12 pm

Starting to think we can really do damage in the MWC… Fresno seems like a tough match up but starting to believe we can beat Nevada if Graham can be a little more consistent with his throws.

  252. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:13 pm

OC should hire this game analyst. Young, knows the game, likes Hawaii. Better than that know-nothing Kekaula and game-passed-him-by Tomey.

  253. Matt September 7, 2013 5:13 pm

    Shroeder is in.

  254. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 5:13 pm

    What?

  255. GA Warrior September 7, 2013 5:14 pm

Gant is awful, yet we still keep playing him……

  256. Wes'side Warrior September 7, 2013 5:14 pm

    Oh Em Gee… dang it!

  257. gobows September 7, 2013 5:14 pm

its official, they need a new kick returner.

  258. obachan September 7, 2013 5:14 pm

Gant can’t catch or use his head…just can’t Gant

  259. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:14 pm

    Schroeder time

  260. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:15 pm

    OH NO. Schroeder. ACK!

  262. d1shima September 7, 2013 5:15 pm

    🙁

  263. gobows September 7, 2013 5:15 pm

norm chow has to fire the offensive coordinator after that dumb play.

  264. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:15 pm

    Right on cue: safety.

    Coach Chow is officially LOST.

  265. gobows September 7, 2013 5:16 pm

go for the hat trick, onside kick.

  266. MattO September 7, 2013 5:17 pm

Pathetic 2nd half. No other way to say it.

  267. gobows September 7, 2013 5:17 pm

you know your punter sucks when you kick off the tee on a free kick.

  268. WarriorNY September 7, 2013 5:17 pm

    GA WARRIOR

IT, Steve Imai or whatever persona you want to portray… i give upi just cant keep up with all of your personalities…

  269. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:17 pm

I feel so sorry for the Warrior d, who again played well enuff to win (given a competent offense)

  270. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 5:18 pm

    Mr Higgins Please.

  271. 808bowler September 7, 2013 5:18 pm

hawaii look like a dII team

  272. MattO September 7, 2013 5:19 pm

#274 – the D just ran out of gas again after that effort last week and being on the field for so long this week.

  273. Inyoface September 7, 2013 5:20 pm

Next game, start Lakalaka, have Grimes or St juste return kickoffs, bench gant for brs.

  274. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:22 pm

    MattO: September 7th, 2013 at 5:19 pm

    Agree. Totally.

  275. Inyoface September 7, 2013 5:22 pm

    Graham did his job.

  276. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:26 pm

    Inyoface: September 7th, 2013 at 5:22 pm

Yup. 10-20 1 TD. Buku drops. Hope he isn’t dinged. Otherwise, subbing Schroeder made no sense.

  277. GA Warrior September 7, 2013 5:30 pm

NY Warrior, same guy every year, just watching our program fall apart on national tv, again. Never believed in Chow from the get go and every week he is outcoached, has no gameplan or idea of how the game has passed him by. Almost of college football is heading one way and Chow is heading back to 80s. But you keep drinking the Chow aid, brother…..

  278. MattO September 7, 2013 5:30 pm

#281 – agreed. The timing was so odd.

    Aaaaand a pick. Sigh.

  279. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 5:31 pm

Too many mental mistakes… dropped passes… horrible end zone fielding on the 1 yd line.. might as well just give Oregon State the game…

  280. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:32 pm

    Pick. That’s our Schroeder.

  281. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:32 pm

Anyone know who has been playing Tackle this half ?? I notice some pretty good protection….

  282. gobows September 7, 2013 5:33 pm

when maggitt had cramps they should have sat him the rest of the game

  283. MattO September 7, 2013 5:34 pm

I wonder how many total offensive yards we have in the 2nd half. Can’t be much.

  284. gobows September 7, 2013 5:34 pm

    #285

well i did state the other day pick six will resurface this year…give it time.

  285. Inyoface September 7, 2013 5:34 pm

The receivers just gotta catch the thing called a football and we’ll be alright.

  286. AllG September 7, 2013 5:35 pm

Classic Schroeder…Why is he in the game? He was given all of last year to prove how junk he is. If Graham is your man give him a shot. SS was not pulled last year even in blowouts. Don’t know why Chow has a love affair with this guy?

  287. Noooo September 7, 2013 5:37 pm

    Hail mary

  288. obachan September 7, 2013 5:38 pm

Granted U of Oregon has excellent athletes which makes it possible to do what they do but just from a purely entertainment aspect, watched their offense today was a pleasure to watch. Chow’s offense is as exciting as watching sap drip from my plumeria tree.

  289. MattO September 7, 2013 5:38 pm

D exhausted, but holding as tough as they can. Nice stop.

  290. 3-Prong September 7, 2013 5:38 pm

Defensive Line was excellent all day in keeping defenders hands off their jerseys, avoiding “navel” battles and creating problems for the offense. Great job.

With all the great ex UH receivers, I’m surprised none of them are our coach in that position.

  292. PurpleMaple September 7, 2013 5:40 pm

I’ll put it out there. I think Sean should be the starting QB.

  293. OC Warrior September 7, 2013 5:41 pm

@286 Jeezy looks like Griffen and Milovale are in at tackle.

  294. gobows September 7, 2013 5:43 pm

  295. GA Warrior September 7, 2013 5:44 pm

Can’t wait to see Tsai and others spin this as improvment, 212 yards total offense, 7 offensive points against a defense that gave up 49 points and 625 yards last week against a FCS team. #293, couldnt have said it better than that…..

  296. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 5:44 pm

Defense held a revitalized OSU to 33… despite an offense that failed to come out of the lockers after halftime.

Beavers = OSU, Ducks = OU

  298. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:47 pm

    301. Defense played great in my opinion… Safety made it 33.. For an offense that didn’t move the ball much at all, our D held their own for most of the game.

  299. PolyMom September 7, 2013 5:47 pm

No matter what, I love Chow and this very young team. Receivers had butterfingers tonight. TG was accurate and we just dropped the ball.

Let’s play these PAC 12 teams and learn and grow. You have to play tough teams to get better.

Have a great week. Signing off as I hate the haters who post here. If you are a true fan you would support Coach Chow. If you think you can do better then send us your resume.

  300. Warrior in Georgia September 7, 2013 5:48 pm

How is this crap acceptable??? Coach Chow has turned this program into the laughingstock of Division I football. Can all you now see why this guy never got a head job before,he is clueless. His offense is the worst in college football and we can’t even say we are as good as FCS program. We have scored 10 offensive points when the game has been in doubt in two games and why in the hell is Our sorry backup qb in the game. He is throwing 4 yd passes against the walk ons and Chow will undoutably name him the starter for a drive in which the ball didn’t fly more than 5 yards down the field. I called it last year with three wins and I’m telling you now will be lucky to win that this year.

  301. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:48 pm

USC D must be pretty good.. Wazzu has 0 so far

there’s one at nevada with rolo, and one at weber st.

coaches should show video of chad owens at the line of scrimmage. he really knew how to not only get open, but get open in the passing lane and under the coverage.

something is really wrong when the receivers continually run to the area where the defenders are at.

if you need 8 yards for a 1st down, why are you running a 15 yard route?

  304. MattO September 7, 2013 5:49 pm

Our play consists of one long defensive stand punctuated every once in awhile with 1 minute rests.

  305. Noooo September 7, 2013 5:50 pm

eh Chow, SS not going make O any better, only degrading..

Better times ahead! can’t get worse.

  306. kapakahi September 7, 2013 5:50 pm

Hope that Shigematsu is ready for the Nevada game……so that Milovale can move back to RT in place of Griffin.

    What da heck.

    For Reno…

  308. Hendo September 7, 2013 5:52 pm

Pros: TG played better than last week and defense played tough again. Cons: Offense still needs a lot of improvement and we still lost.

  309. obachan September 7, 2013 5:52 pm

#302 University of Oregon is the official name of said institution -watched their game today vs VA

Will we have a chance at Nevada?

  311. RedZone September 7, 2013 5:53 pm

Same offense that gave up points again. Our poor defense is taking a beating. Maybe take more defenders next time instead of 4 quarterbacks.

  312. heluhelu September 7, 2013 5:54 pm

  313. Hendo September 7, 2013 5:54 pm

315: Maybe, if we can score more than 1 offensive TD.

  314. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 5:55 pm

    311. Griffin played good for the most part…. I only saw Scott Crichton beat him bad 1 time on a sack and he’s one of the top PAc 12 Des

  315. Moocher September 7, 2013 5:56 pm

ahm, to this point….has our defense scored more points then the offense?

  316. gobows September 7, 2013 5:58 pm

  318. GA Warrior September 7, 2013 5:59 pm

  319. Moocher September 7, 2013 5:59 pm

sad to lose….but there are flashes of what can really be done. just need those flashes to ignite into a full blown fire. let’s just see where we really are come conference time…go bows!

  329. GA Warrior September 7, 2013 6:05 pm

No I am pretty sure Johnny Manziel plays at Texas A & M and Taylor Graham was a scholarship QB for Ohio State. Stop making excuses, Chow makes enough of them as it is. We use to be competitive with these teams, this is not an impossible expectation. The defense played well at times, but still gave up 500+ yards of total offense. I dont like seeing these embrassments, it is extremely frustrating because we shouldnt be this bad. But hey, if you can accept this crap you go right ahead and enjoy going 2-11 every year. I support the boys, but this coach is so out of his league. If speaking the truth makes me a troll, well I got no problem with that.

  330. RedZone September 7, 2013 6:06 pm

Taylor just needs to find his Wes Welker.

  331. kapakahi September 7, 2013 6:07 pm

    #319,

Didn’t look comfortable getting into his pass pro sets……ended up too deep behind the LOS……having to resort to extending arms to push the DE around the pocket.

Also too high and slow off when firing off LOS so didn’t get leverage on running plays.

  332. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:09 pm

TG – 88 yards of total offense

SS – 85 yards of total offense

I know it’s just stats but something to think about considering SS really only got 2 series.

  333. Moocher September 7, 2013 6:10 pm

the breakdown of our ah, eh, 27 total points so far is:

    offense=12

    defense=8

    special teams=7

is this common or normal for special teams and defense combined to outscore your offense?

    just asking 🙂

  334. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:11 pm

    336. Still, if were going to give passes on guys 1st games, I would say he did better than Shigematsu and will get better with more PT. Our QBs were protected pretty good for the most part today

  335. Steve P September 7, 2013 6:12 pm

I’ve been a die hard Hawaii Rainbow football fan for 40 yrs. No more. I’m done.. The coaches, players and front office as well as the three dot writers for this paper, couldn’t combine to urinate on a wet paper bag which to the team could fight its way out of to win. Im done.

  336. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:12 pm

1st collegiate game facing Scott Crichton was pretty solid.. Yes he has some things to work on I agree.

  337. heluhelu September 7, 2013 6:14 pm

    jeezy33: September 7th, 2013 at 6:09 pm

Ru serious? Thought u were joking. 85 yards of totally irrelevant offense v. OSU’s total prevent defense? Plus a safety & a pick? In “only,” like you say, 2 series?

Yeah, I believe ur serious. Seriously …

  338. Warrior in Georgia September 7, 2013 6:15 pm

#326 Georgia opened with #5 Clemson and #6 South Carolina, USC and osu aren’t even close to that.

And about sending my résumé it wouldn’t help because I’m not best of friends with the associate uh prez for something like chow was with rocke. Donovan didn’t want chow but his opinion didn’t matter even though he was the ad, how screwed up is that. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I want nothing but success for these kids, but I’m afraid it won’t happen with this coach. Sorry to break that to some you.

  339. Noooo September 7, 2013 6:16 pm

Nuff with the troll bait already. If the only “true” fans are fans who *never* express dismay, concern, anxiety or dissatisfaction with the status quo, Fred von Appen would still be YOUR coach.

    Chew on THAT akolikas.

  343. AllG September 7, 2013 6:22 pm

Griffin played well! Now give Koloamatangi a shot at LT or OG and move Milovale back to OG

  344. Moocher September 7, 2013 6:23 pm

Jeezy….yeah i’m gonna dodge coconuts for saying this but my opinion, i think chow perhaps maybe made backroom promises to get taylor graham here…i think graham is on the record saying something like he didnt come here to sit on the bench. i saw it in a video somewhere maybe someone will recall the exact words.

but i think SS is an angry QB with a chip on his shoulder with something to prove. my opinion is that with the experience from last year and better athletes this year SS would be the wiser choice. let TG beat SS at the QB position as opposed to it being given to TG…but on the good side, SS is a hungry QB and hey, his footwork looked night and day compared to last year. yeah, one bad pass, overall, SS had some zest and some spark in his play.

SS can’t throw more then 20yds. Please don’t put him in the game again! Would rather go through growing pains with Woolsey then live through another miserable season with Schroder

  347. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:24 pm

    350. SS is still going to struggle with long ball but I prefer a QB that can hit the short to intermediate passes at this point… Not trying to stir any type of controversy but offense has to make some kind of adjustment.

  348. Noooo September 7, 2013 6:26 pm

    Hire Ron Lee 4 OC

  349. WarriorMojo September 7, 2013 6:27 pm

“express dismay, concern, anxiety or dissatisfaction” all you want, but blaming Schroeder for the safety is just whining.

  350. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:27 pm

  352. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:28 pm

    355. not SS fault. He did exactly what Vaz did when Hawaii jumped offsides. The snap didn’t come quick enough and we got caught for a safety.

  353. AllG September 7, 2013 6:28 pm

For those of you who were fooled by SS moving the ball he came in when game was over and OSU took off their pass rush. He threw all 5 yard passes which he can do, but would’ve be able to do for an entire game. The two passes he tried to throw over 15 yards were picked and severely under thrown on the second.

  354. AllG September 7, 2013 6:31 pm

356… You can’t throw short passes all game. Defense will sit on it like they did last year then SS will hold onto the ball and get sacked. You r crazy if u think he is the answer

  355. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:31 pm

    359. and TG did much better??

  356. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:32 pm

    361. Don’t put words in my mouth… I never said he was the answer. I just said he did more than TG regardless how you wanna spin it.

  357. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:32 pm

TG couldn’t hit any of the deep balls when guys were open and he didn’t take enough shots to begin with.

  358. AllG September 7, 2013 6:33 pm

362…most of his passes were dropped. He will get better with experience. Can’t pull him after two games against PAC 12 D…No one thought we would win these games anyways

  359. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:34 pm

Besides Gant drop, the other drops were bad balls in double coverage that almost killed his WRs

  360. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:35 pm

There is no way to spin that TG didn’t play well at all though…

  361. Inyoface September 7, 2013 6:35 pm

I think they need to go for longer passes at least sometimes. Hardly saw a home run pass, mostly short ones.

  362. AllG September 7, 2013 6:36 pm

361… If u wanna pull TG we should make a move that will pay dividends next year as well. That is not putting SS in. If I thought he would help us win games this year I would be for it, but he had his time and showed no promise.

  363. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:37 pm

D was outstanding to me… We showed discipline on all OSU trick plays…. Gener was all over the place. Woodard was causing havoc. Our D linemen weren’t getting moved… Hardy was all over the field… When OSU completed balls, Mannion put the ball up where only his WRs could get it… Mulaney caught the ball well at high point of its peak..

Graham needs to work on his ball placement. We have tall WRs, use that to our advantage.

  364. AllG September 7, 2013 6:37 pm

Chow needs to take some of the blame as well. It’s not TGs fault the play calling sucks

  365. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:38 pm

370… Hey I’m fine with that. I don’t think there is a QB controversy. I just think the game was getting reach and Norm Chow wanted to give his back up some reps in case TG got hurt

  366. RedZone September 7, 2013 6:38 pm

I thought we still paying for our OC who is not around?

  367. AllG September 7, 2013 6:38 pm

Trust me Graham needs a TON of work, but has much more upside then SS

  368. warriorsfan September 7, 2013 6:39 pm

Plain and simple (9 dropped passes) end of conversation

  369. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 6:39 pm

    Rolo 1-1,

    Chow 0-2

  370. madeinhawaii September 7, 2013 6:39 pm

In all fairness, though, the Warriors had a much more difficult first two games.

  371. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:39 pm

    374. Again putting words in my mouth.. I never said I hated him. I didn’t even say to start someone else.. I just said he played bad and coach took him out because game was out of reach

  372. RedZone September 7, 2013 6:40 pm

Sean looks quicker in the pocket but when Taylor was running with the ball I was yelling Tebow.

  373. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:40 pm

    376. Not arguing there… only thing I said is TG needs to be more accurate with the ball consistently and I think Norm did the right thing to give our back up some reps…

  376. AllG September 7, 2013 6:42 pm

377…true dat…TG didn’t play great, but showed improvement. The receivers on the other hand regressed. They gonna be renamed as the “Drop Show” if they keep this up

  377. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 6:44 pm

    385. Besides Gant drop, which drops are you referring to that were costly though? I know Moleni dropped on early in the game but it was like a 2 yard pass that I don’t think was going for anything besides 2 yards.

The Haynes drop was between 3 defenders. Haynes fault for running into Harding on the route though…

  378. AllG September 7, 2013 6:44 pm

384…he moved the ball in the last min. So did TG against SC. Very misleading. I wouldn’t mind seeing Woolsey get some game action though.

  379. AllG September 7, 2013 6:46 pm

Haynes had couple drops, Gant, Moleni, Kirkwood, too many to count

This is battle; you must respond! Go Warriors! Get some rest and get ready for next week. These are two games against PAC 12 opponents that no one had us winning. Lots of football left in the season; if we getting better every week, then good things can happen.

  411. Derek September 7, 2013 7:54 pm

Like I said, USC is overrated. Losing at home 7-10 to Wazzu spells doom for Kiffin. And I still maintain that we could have won last week has we not turn the ball over. I saw more encouraging things from SS than TG. Maybe Higgins should get a shot too. Give him more reps in practice, maybe Woolsey also. What you’re trying to find at QB is someone who can give the team a spark. You want to see who is a gamer.

And as I also said, the defense played their hearts again. Gener was excellent. Did Marrell get hurt? We were killed on 3rd down a lot, often 3rd and long. We made it a game for awhile, but in the 3rd quarter the offense did nothing and the defense got tired. That was disappointing.

  412. Konoman1 September 7, 2013 7:55 pm

    Thank you Truman.

  413. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 8:04 pm

UH is in store for another rough offensive year. This group of Olinemen just aren’t getting it done. Pass protection was a little better as expected, but mainly due to Oregon St not being as aggressive as USC was.

What’s been very disappointing has been the run blocking. The OLine can’t get any push and the RBs have no holes to run through. Lakalaka was getting hit at or behind the line of scrimmage on almost every run. He’s a strong enough athlete that he can still bust forward 2-3yds after contact on almost every play. Almost all of his yards were after contact at the line of scrimmage.

When RBs are forced to cut or change direction/momentum before they hit the hole, they lose effectiveness. I truly believe UH has very good talent at RB but they are having to duck and weave just to get to the line of scrimmage.

Also, I think Schroeder showed us why Graham is the #1 QB. His intercepted ball was exactly why he’s not starting. Just not enough arm for the deep ball. He had good protection, made the right read, Kemp found the hole in the 2 deep zone, but the throw was woefully short and lacked velocity. On the positive note, he went 8-12, which is good, but that was against the 2nd team defense. I said last year that he’s a smart QB, but just lacks the arm to threaten defenses vertically.

I think the WRs will be doing a lot of catching drills this week…. Way too many drops in the first two games. There were 4 or 5 vs UsC and at least as many tonight vs OSU. TG’s numbers would look a heck of a lot better if the WRs could catch the football.

Not much needs to be said about Chris Gant’s night… It was really ugly.

Good stuff. Question: on the safety *without* hindsight, if you saw what Schroeder saw presnap (4-4 stack, LB/DL showing run blitz) when the play called for a handoff, would you a) audible a dive (preserve LOS, avoid TFL,) b) call T/O to consult/rethink c) take the snap as-is.

  420. Inyoface September 7, 2013 8:22 pm

Too bad there was no field goal attempts even. Smh

  421. heluhelu September 7, 2013 8:22 pm

corr. “if you saw what Schroeder [presumably] saw presnap …”

  422. Jeezy33 September 7, 2013 8:23 pm

I think Schroeder was trying to snap it because osu defender jumped offsides ..

I hope Hawaii coaches recruit a dual threat qb to give tuileta competition in case he doesn’t turn out to be the answer.. Taysom hill is very inaccurate but he gave Texas fits with his speed…

  423. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 8:25 pm

    422. Not sure what happened to Marrell Jackson. I didn’t see his name or number at all during the game. UH missed him as the secondary couldnt contain Cook very well.

The positives for tonight is that UH’s run defense is legit. They only gave up 57 rush yards to a solid offense. Storm Woods, who is an excellent RB, only averaged 2.9/ypc. I thought Brenden Daily’s injury hurt the defense from a communication standpoint. The LB corp held up well, but I think Daley’s absence cost them on some of the screen plays UH was gashed on, as well as calling out adjustments.

UH didn’t fare as well vs Mannion and the pass attack, but you have to give credit to OSU. They executed a few screens against the perfect defensive play and that resulted in big yards. On the 80% of the other screen passes, UH defended very well. Coach Riley must have saw something UH was doing vs USC and decided to call a ton of screen passes, trying to catch UH being over aggressive. Mannion also focused many throws in the area of Marrell Jackson’s replacements. Also, he threw a TD on the play after Maggitt went out with cramps. They picked on Maggitt’s replacement and beat him easily. That’s just good play calling and recognition to pick on the inexperience DB fresh off the bench. Again, Phillips and Maggitt did a good job for the most part but were beaten on a few plays. I will say that both Phillips and Maggitt are very good on containment vs the run and are good tacklers for CBs.

The other positive is that there is no quit in this team. They fight to the final whistle.

The other positive note… UH covered the 28 points fairly comfortably.

  424. heluhelu September 7, 2013 8:27 pm

    Jeezy33: September 7th, 2013 at 8:23 pm

No. The LB got back before snap.

  425. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 8:35 pm

431, given that Schroeder got limited reps in practice as the backup, I wouldn’t expect him to be razor sharp in knowing what to audible to. Timeout was probably the right call.

There was some confusion when the OSU defender jumped offside and got back.

In any case, there’s no excuse for Gant’s blunder on fielding the kick return that setup the safety. I know it’s near impossible to simulate that in practice, but Gant has to to understand to let the ball go when his momentum is going out of bounds on a well placed kickoff near the pylon.

  426. heluhelu September 7, 2013 8:35 pm

Former UH Athlete: September 7th, 2013 at 8:35 pm

“… given that Schroeder got limited reps in practice as the backup”

Good point. Which would also be on coaches for the playcall (handoff to Lakalaka appeared sluggish, conceivably attributable to lack of reps)

  429. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 8:41 pm

434… That’s kinda what I saw too. The timing of the OLine firing off the snap looked off. At the 1yd line, there’s zero margin for error.

Also, I thought it was a mistake to bring in Schroeder in that situation. New QB means new cadence, and it’s fairly common for OLine to misfire with a new QB. More than likely Chow tabbed Schroeder to go in well before Gant F’d up the return.

I can’t recall, but was there a commercial break before the safety?

  430. jeezy33 September 7, 2013 8:43 pm

436,, I know that but that is what SS was trying to do… Center didn’t snap it quick enough..

  431. Warrior Dave September 7, 2013 8:43 pm

Some people grumble all week to play another QB. Your wish is granted and now you see what happens against the 2nd/3rd string defense. Safety and a pick.

#304 Poly Mom, thank you for bringing a voice of reason to this blog. Hope you’re feeling better.

  432. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 8:49 pm

Dont worry Hawaii fans… It could be a lot worse… At least we aren’t USC fans right now.

USC was getting booed by the home crowd in the 1st quarter. If not for Wazzu’s horriblely mistake prone QB Halliday, this was a one sided game. Halliday threw an int in the end zone. Then attempted to throw the ball away under pressure, only to slip out of his hand as a fumble… Setting up USC’s only TD. His other int was a terribly attempted deep ball off his back foot and was easily picked off.

  433. heluhelu September 7, 2013 8:51 pm

    jeezy33: September 7th, 2013 at 8:43 pm

Whatever. I agree the 1st culprit is Gant for field position. Coaches also bear responsibility for sub timing & playcall given Schroeder’s lack of reps. But Schroeder took 99% of game/practice snaps last season. If he saw what we saw, should’ve called T/O, unless he’s just a kissa$$ robot obeying commands without thought or reason to please his coaches.

  434. Inyoface September 7, 2013 8:51 pm

Safety wasn’t his fault but I’m still with Graham as starter.

  435. kev-1 September 7, 2013 8:53 pm

It isn’t fair to say SS played better than TG. He wasn’t faced with the same type of pressure that late in the game, he went through ZERO reads. He had a receiver chosen pre-snap. That’s why the plays were so effective. It is just like when teams run a two minute drill and are often times successful at driving the length of the field. And then we fans wonder “why didn’t we do that all game?” Well, because those types of plays only work until the defense figures it out and shuts it down. Like they did tonight.

No QB controversy. TG improved a bit. Yes there were drops, but you can see that TG’s timing is too early. Receivers are turning for the ball just as it arrives, which leads to drops. His timing has often been to late, waiting until receivers fit into coverage after being open for a bit.

Timing can be fixed. He was more accurate in terms of ball placement this game than he was last game.

We need Daley to be ok. Gener is a BEAST!!!!!!!!

  436. kev-1 September 7, 2013 8:55 pm

I think he should be our leader on offense and have been disappointed by his play and decision making. I don’t mean to make it too personal, but I think Gant needs to be benched for a week or dropped from the depth chart for no other reason than lighting a spark in him.

  437. heluhelu September 7, 2013 8:55 pm

    Inyoface: September 7th, 2013 at 8:51 pm

    Disagree, but agree.

  438. kev-1 September 7, 2013 8:56 pm

The late snap is on the center, not SS. Pretty sure in situations like that the center is told to watch for jumpers and SNAP.

  439. Jeezy33 September 7, 2013 8:59 pm

There is no qb controversy …. Lets just agree TG needs to play better and he doesn’t have all season to do it… we were down 17 in the 4th so I don’t blame norm chow for wanting to give his back up reps with the 1st string offense in case TG ever goes down .. He didnt exactly dominate but we weren’t moving with TG anyway so I’m not gonna complain about SS.

don’t kno why we don’t run more 3 step drop plays so TG can just get rid of the ball quicker

  440. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 8:59 pm

Also… Anybody else notice that Marqise lee isn’t nearly the WR he was last year now that Robert Woods is gone?

Phillips and Maggit contained Lee until the defense gassed out late. WAZZU bracketed Lee and held him to 27 yards total. Granted the USC QB situation is a total disaster, but Lee still should be able to get his as Kiffen is calling for him to touch the ball as much as possible.

  441. Jeezy33 September 7, 2013 9:00 pm

    451. Correct. That wasnt SS fault .. Gotta snap quicker when defender jumps

  442. heluhelu September 7, 2013 9:00 pm

    kev-1: September 7th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Disagree. Presnap read + playcall = T/O (regardless of LB/DL presnap motion).

  443. kev-1 September 7, 2013 9:00 pm

The positive thing is … yes there is a positive, even without too much spin … is that we played two games against Pac12 teams that we would have won had we a decent offensive effort. No question. That should bode well for conference play.

  444. Jeezy33 September 7, 2013 9:01 pm

    453. I think it’s part rust with injury and with Barkley gone, hard time getting into a flow with these crappy qbs .. His hands are good that’s why..

  445. heluhelu September 7, 2013 9:07 pm

    kev-1: September 7th, 2013 at 9:00 pm

True. And coach Chow needs to hire a (competent) receivers coach. WRs can realize huge gains w/even the smallest tips in technique. AD needs to open wallet despite prior snafus.

  446. kev-1 September 7, 2013 9:07 pm

Oline needs to improve significantly. I’m not sure if it is coaching or just execution. When we were a RnS team, I accepted that we were poor run blockers because it was uncommon. But now that we are a running team too, we need more holes.

7-2 to start the year so far. Not bad at all.

Should have taken the under for the UH game. Until the OLine starts performing at a respectable level, UH will struggle to score, plus, UH’s D will usually hold their opponents in check. I’d look to bet under any UH game set at 52 or above (unless its Fresno) until the offense gets going.

  470. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 9:38 pm

459… It becoming apparent that UH has a talent problem on the OLine. It’s the same group as last year and the performance has been about the same.

That’s why Naeole was hired in January. His primary job (besides coaching up the current group), is to improve OLine recruiting. At this point that’s the element that’s handicapping the offense. Naeole was brought on too late for the 2013 recruits but his impact will be felt in years down the road. Ever since coach Cav left UH after 2004, the OLine recruiting was never the same, as evidenced from the 2006 season where Brennan set many of his records. Then in 2007, as most of Cav’s guys graduated, the 2007 line gave up more hits on Brennan and also Brennan was banged up for much of the year, including a scramble that he was KO’d on vs Fresno. The OLine has declined every year since 2006 and when the last of Jones’ recruits were gone after 2010, the bottom started to fall out on the line as McMackin failed to recruit any decent OLine prospect during his 4 years. Moniz was running for his life most of 2011 and ended up with a broken leg.

What gives me confidence in Naeole’s abiliy to recruit is that he has one major similarity to coach Cav… His NFL experience. I’m just glad Chow realized he needed more help in the OLine recruiting department and signed Naeole onboard.

    479. Just a lot of route running drills and timing drills with QB.. Intense and motivates … Like I said, I can’t explain to u typing on how he coached up their mistakes but the guy knows what he’s doing and is very good at teaching for not having any coaching experience … Every coach starts somewhere .. I mean if u wanna blame him for gant dropping a pass then feel free… any team that plays 3 new wrs are going to have some issues with timing and routes early in the season ..

  475. Jeezy33 September 7, 2013 9:44 pm

  476. Manoa September 7, 2013 9:45 pm

Former UH Athlete– not sure we can recruit the talent to run an offense like Chows. You would need talent and size like Oregon State has and even OSU had trouble with our defense when they were fresh. Virginia has a good offensive line, but they are not good enough to score more than 10 points against Oregon.

  479. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2013 9:48 pm

Jeezy… No money for or against SDSU this week. Speaking of which, they look awful. Last years team could have hung around Ohio St but this years squad has significantly less talent. UH has a pretty good chance at beating SDSU at Aloha Stadium. As ugly as the offense has been, I still think UH gets at least 4 wins in the final 7 games.

Official picks with money were Hawaii, Michigan, Oregon and Air Force. It’s posted on yesterday’s topic.

My other non bet picks went 2-2. I’m only going to keep track of the ones I actually made plays on.

  480. Jeezy33 September 7, 2013 9:50 pm

Sorry had Arizona, not Michigan on my official bets. No action on Michigan for me although I picked them to cover.

Either way they both covered. My record is still 7-2 through 2 weeks.

NFL betting is a little tougher for me. I usually have a better feel on playing the totals than the sides.

489… Too early to tell. Gotta see if Naeole can work his magic. Chow’s priority during his first two classes appears to have been on improving the overall athleticism of the roster, and renewed focus on local recruiting. That has largely been accomplished. Lakalaka, Wily, Kennedy, Wa’a, Fonua, Kiha Sai are top locals who Chow kept home. Also, Kory Rasmussen is coming back home to play for Chow. For 2014, UH has verbals from 6 of the top 15 local recruits and is n the running for a few more top 10 locals.

UH may have the best young talent on defense in the MWC… JG-W, M. Jackson, Kennedy, NeQuan, Meffy all look good and are freshmen/sophomores. Once Castro and Rasmussen are ready, UH is pretty loaded on D.

How does coach Chow account for the non production on offense? Looking around the country, many DII schools put up more than 4 TDs against DI schools. Is it the coaching? Play calling? Lack of quality athletes? Is it the system? Obviously you can’t win games without a decent offense, nor can you be considered competitive. And it doesn’t matter that you are playing top tiered teams. In the past, UH has its share of underdog upsets so it can happen but the coaches must make it happen.
