Game Day: New Mexico State

Liz Chun makes her debut as K5’s sideline reporter.

* * * * *

The Warriors are wearing same uniforms as last week — green jerseys (with legible white numbers), white pants and, of course, white socks. Kealoha Pilares, ever the stylish player, is wearing white shoes.

* * * * *

It’s a shame that finances have an impact on a football game. New Mexico State’s football team arrived last night, and it will depart tonight. Twenty-four hours at a site isn’t enough time to get acclimated nor to rest, especially since there’s no easy path from Las Cruces to Honolulu. For all of UH’s woes, at least road accommodations aren’t one of them.

* * * * *

If the WAC wants to shut down any talk of Boise State jumping leagues, it should dump the share-the-wealth program. Let’s say Boise State qualifies for a BCS game, it should be allowed to keep the whole pot except for, say, maybe a 10 percent tax to the WAC. It’s more incentive for teams to excel. Besides, I’ve never liked the idea of fans of other WAC teams cheering for Boise just because of  the shared payday.

Hawaii will win 47 to 42 in a WAC shootout. The NMSU running vs the new balance Warrior attack. Our defense is still bad, but our offense is unreal.

  16. whitey November 14, 2009 9:03 am

ST, what is a BCS berth worth??? At the same time, the WAC should not subsidize any bowl team if they don’t make their quota and whatever team is in a bowl, they keep 90% and give the WAC 10%. Sounds Fair to me.

  23. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 9:08 am

NMSU with 42? that would be twice the highest score they had all season, and that was a three-point victory over Division I-AA Prairie View A&M.

Me, I’m anticipating another solid game by the offense and a much improved game by the Defense.

I think 48 – 13. UH stays under 50 because Austin and Rausch come in the last quarter to share mop-up duties.

    .
Besides, I’ve never liked the idea of fans of other WAC teams cheering for Boise just because of the shared payday.

    Thank you!!!!!!

While we’re at it, I’ve never liked the “cheer for other teams because they are in your conference” thing.

When FSU went to the College World Series, I never saw how that was supposed to benefit us at Hawaii. Never. Did it? Nope.

  38. tom mui November 14, 2009 9:41 am

LizKauai: Wish I could say the same (sun being out). From my window facing kokohead, I can’t see kokohead; Diamond Head is barely visable and quite a bit of rain in Kaimuki! OTH Date Street/Kapiolani is dry (so far, anyway)!

  39. βρεω808 November 14, 2009 9:43 am

    …kokohead….. How about “bolo-head”? He is a tall fellow? 🙄 😆 😆

Chance are LizK will bring more “808-sunshine” w/ her…. 🙄

  40. Mrs. A-House November 14, 2009 9:44 am

    Kekoa –

Sorry I missed reading your post from yesterday. Yes, I did receive your email. Mahalo! If Diana and Pops are not able to come to the tailgate, pack up some maki sushi for them to taste. See you in a little bit…

  41. rasu begasu November 14, 2009 9:44 am

The only teams I cheer for are
    Kaiser High,
    UH
    & the Redskins.

Oh, and anybody playing against the Dallas Goat herders!

  42. βρεω808 November 14, 2009 9:46 am

Esquire tom – Last Sat. some of us posted a possible alternative to view the game…. since you were having problems w/ the PPV. I’m not sure you saw that info….

  43. PowderPuff November 14, 2009 9:48 am

Happy rainy game day, Tsaikos. The weather outside is frightful…here comes the rain, at least in town. It’s really coming down. Rain, shine or ugly…let’s go Warriors! Pour it on tonight.

  48. PowderPuff November 14, 2009 9:58 am

#41 – Kaiser High? Wow, me too. Gotta love dem Cougars…I’m not shame to say I’m one. 😀

  49. tom mui November 14, 2009 10:03 am

βρεω808: Thanks – didn’y see the posting but sort of followed the scoring thru the Blog and wondered why at 10:30, it was showing on 256!

Taped it on Sunday and at least saw the first three scores which I missed the night before!

Wished they have railings at the Stadium!

  50. βρεω808 November 14, 2009 10:04 am

    T-REX!!! 😥

  51. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 10:04 am

Eh.. the instructors that say that our priorities are screwy cause it seems that we are putting our athletics before academics is out of line.

Athletics funding was lacking so the entire facilities was falling apart and was a law suit about to happen. The Ching family donation really helped and the State had to match funds to make it happen. It simply was the athletic department’s turn.

If the other departments want more money, they should also actively find ways to generate more money, too. Harping on McMackin’s salary should have been done long ago, if ever, not now. Sounds like pure jealousy and a case of sour apples to me.

One man’s salary isn’t going to change the economic situation. One man’s success might do more, though. Go MAC!

  52. djmitcho November 14, 2009 10:05 am

Good Morning Everyone! Game Day!!! GO WARRIORS!!!

  53. βρεω808 November 14, 2009 10:09 am

Okay tom – you just let us know if you’re having PPV problems and we’ll try to find a alternate source for you. The game will be shown on various sources on the continent – 😀

New Mexico St. at Hawai’i 10pm(EST)
    Oceanic Streaming
    DirecTV 790
    Dish Network 460
    ESPN/Gameplan
    ESPN360

  54. dittohead November 14, 2009 10:19 am

chancellor heehaw’s comments are hilarious–what else can the author of MAC’s salary say?

  55. tom mui November 14, 2009 10:20 am

Maybe the legislature, in its infinite wisdom, should waive that 30+% payraise that they awarded themselves. Oh, did you say it was the law?
I would imagine the same argument could go for negotiated and binding contracts as well.

  56. A-House November 14, 2009 10:24 am

    MIH:

I’m with you on dat one!!

What is/are the Profs in upper campus doing to attract more $$$ for academics. We know that certain ones bring in millions in grants for their pet projects and no idea how the money is spent and what guidelines they must follow to spend it.

What has Musto, himself, done to bring in $$$? His annual salary is almost $200,000 as head of the union.

    Bitch, bitch!!!

BREW, yep, that was really the real Mrs A-House and we are off to the tailgate.

and looks like boise is getting cocky again, getting a 2pt conversion on that first td.
its gonna bite them in the but one day when they fail and then lose by 1.

unions negotiate their wages, no noise. employers sets hiring pay guidelines, no noise. airlines continue with “baggage surcharge”, no noise. then we get one guy who thinks he knows everything and is a parrot. don’t know how to explain that.

  67. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 11:02 am

egads… Boise is stuffing it down Idaho’s throat… 21-7 with about 2 1/2 mins left in the 1st quarter.

  75. Old School Dave November 14, 2009 11:31 am

Regarding the professors who always criticize athletics; it’s the proverbial response of when was the last time you had 40,000 watch a chemistry experiment or flock to the bookstore to buy a newly published book?

If people aren’t happy with their salary or lots in life, then go change careers. Apply for a GA position and work your way up the coaching ladder. Apply for a position as a bus driver or stevedore.

Aside from the crowds at football, the only other way the school draws tens of thousands is for graduation…when the students are leaving!

  78. d1島 November 14, 2009 11:58 am

Watching SC’s marching band…at least they can march down the field! 🙄

  79. whitey November 14, 2009 11:58 am

d1, sorry, but going miss the gang at the game. have fun and have a great game.

  80. Jason November 14, 2009 12:00 pm

I flock to the bookstore to buy newly published math books … 😛

Okay, actually I don’t. Although I do peruse the shelves at Book-Off to see if they have any cheap math textbooks on sale. This almost reaches chawan_cut-like levels of lameness.

It’s like those who complained that athletics are more important than education when the news on furloughs came out—athletics is a part of education. It helps foster pride and identity in a school. It helps student-athletes keep on track. Initial costs now can lead to increased payoff later. Now, is $1.1 million a lot? Yeah, but I bet you those folks would still be griping if Mack were making $800k. Many of them won’t be satisfied unless the head coach is making $200k or less.

  81. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 12:07 pm

    Jason,

I would be ecstatic as a prof to find out that the coach was gonna make that much. Come the next time around in union negotiations for better pay and benefits, we would have a precedent to base our arguments on.

Someone has to spearhead the way to greater equity in pay… why not the coach of the most visible element of the University?

  82. d1島 November 14, 2009 12:09 pm

    Wildcat Update.

Weber St beats No. Arizona, 27-9. Holding on to feint playoff hopes.

Linfield up on Pac. Lutheran, 41-7 at the half. On their way to 9-0 reg season and on to play-offs!

    GO WILDCATS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  83. wafan November 14, 2009 12:09 pm

I hope all the Kool-aid drinking sheep have a great time at the pre and post T-Gate, and the game. You have to eat enough for those of us who cannot be physically present. Shucks.

  88. cavewarrior November 14, 2009 12:15 pm

I think coaches are in HGEA.

  89. d1島 November 14, 2009 12:19 pm

Thanks cavewarrior. Still though, kinda odd comments about a fellow union member.

  90. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:21 pm

Not that it makes any difference, but it actually was Carl Clapp who hired Mack.
Sure, the money is a little pricey, but UH was backed into a corner. JJ left … with three weeks left in recruiting.
UH could have gone outside, but that would have meant blowing the momentum from the Sugar Bowl. And then the economy went south.

  91. Kazz (blkberry_storm) November 14, 2009 12:22 pm

    ST,

So what? Green tops and white bottoms again today for da boys?

  92. wafan November 14, 2009 12:23 pm

I figure it is just more whining and complaining by the same people who are, perhaps, unwilling to do anything to improve their lot.

In a while, they will find something else about which to belly-ache.

  93. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:25 pm

The only thing I know is that this year’s schedule is more favorable than next year’s.
This year the road games were very winnable: Washington State, UNLV, LaTech, Nevada, Idaho, San Jose State.
And UH had Fresno State and Boise State on the road.
Next year, UH has to go to Fresno State and Boise State, as well as to Army and Colorado.
And it has to play USC at home.
A winning record will be a good first goal for 2010.

  94. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:26 pm

    Kazz:
That appears to be the dress code.

  95. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 12:29 pm

    ST….

attaway.. prepare us for the next season’s harsh realities. Things don’t get any easier for Mac and company, eh?

  96. whitey November 14, 2009 12:31 pm

ST, if you going stop by the tg today, pls give the jersey to al and he can give it to me. Thanks.

  97. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:33 pm

I don’t know diddly about economics, but it seems to me that UH’s financial problems stem from 1) cut in funding from the state. 2) being stuck with the West Oahu school that the state seems to have abandoned.
I think we need a rail system, but a real system, with lines going out to the Windward side, too. But if the government isn’t committed fully, what’s the point?
Honolulu needs a strong education system (one that’s open five days a week), a solid state university, a symphony, clean zoo and beaches, and yes, a strong athletic program. And, sure, a Trader Joe’s or Bath & Body Works would be cool, too.

  98. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 12:33 pm

SMU is hanging on with the smallest of leads in the 4th quarter against Rice… I believe if they take this, they become bowl eligible? 28 – 24

  99. whitey November 14, 2009 12:33 pm

i don’t think scheduling so called “tuff” teams is a detriment to the Warriors. that’s why they play the game.

  100. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:34 pm

I think Kyle Wilson is the WAC’s Defensive Player of the Year.

  101. d1島 November 14, 2009 12:34 pm

    Is Javonte Taylor playing?

  102. whitey November 14, 2009 12:34 pm

what you mean, no more one bath and body shoppe in HNL???????

  103. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 12:38 pm

    whitey..

Got at least ONE bath… and at least ONE body (and fender) shop.

  104. d1島 November 14, 2009 12:38 pm

I wouldn’t argue with Wilson as Def POY

  105. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:38 pm

I love the idea of a playoff system, but I think the bowl system is a better fit for UH. I mean, the 2007 really was a once-in-100-years deal. If there were a playoff system, UH’s season would have ended after the UNLV game. Now the Warriors, even at 3-6, are still thinking postseason.

  106. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 12:39 pm

    Stanford 28… USC 14… heh… football.. expect the unexpected…

  107. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 12:40 pm

OOops… UTEP took the lead.. up 31-28 over SMU…8:57 left to play.

  108. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:41 pm

Not sure if Taylor’s going. If not, Joe Avery and Craig Bell are working out there. Mike Tinoco would get a shot if he didn’t drop a lot of passes in practice.

  109. d1島 November 14, 2009 12:46 pm

    mih,

Not really unexpected. USC making a living on their rep from years gone by…

  110. d1島 November 14, 2009 12:48 pm

    Thanks Stephen.

Are you in Halawa? How’s the weather?

  111. Garret November 14, 2009 12:50 pm

I thought that Joe Avery did well when he had to come in mid-game–he did a decent job considering his limited playing time before.

  112. Garret November 14, 2009 12:55 pm

I *completely* agree with ST’s post above about how the WAC should provide some incentives for teams to do well. The Big 12 does that and teams that excel and get on TV more get more money. If the WAC went to that model, UH would have made a LOT more in past years.

Why split the TV dollars evenly when ESPN only cares about certain teams? Should BSU and UH really get the same amount of money as Utah State and NMSU from the TV deal? There should be a reward for teams that do well and get picked by ESPN.

Why split the bowl dollars so evenly? It would be good to give a bigger cut to the team that earns the BCS money–UH and BSU would have benefitted in 2006 and 2007.

I had thought that the WAC wasn’t interested in that incentive-based model because in the past everything was split so evenly. It would be great for BSU and good for UH to do what ST proposed above.

  113. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2009 12:56 pm

Wow! I Feel sorry for Idaho……Boise is the reaaaaaaaaaaaal deal!

50+ points and it’s only the 3rd quarter. (O_0) ouch!

They are bcs bowl material no doubt. Too bad this scam of a system probably won’t allow them to.

  114. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2009 12:57 pm

I’m still at home, watching the Boise game.

    Re: salaries.
Hey, I don’t begrudge a coach for making what he can make. That’s life. I mean, hey, a sports columnist a the paper makes 7 percent more than the football beat writer, who makes the same as the education writer.
UH professors can grumble all they want. But they could easily be compared to DOE teachers, and I don’t think the professors are taking a paycut. Nor should they. They worked hard to get their PhD. Their quality of instruction hasn’t deteriorated, as far as I can tell. So why should professors be punished for a bad economy?

  115. Garret November 14, 2009 1:00 pm

Those complaining about UH professors and their funding should know that UH takes half or so of the money professors bring in and terms that “overhead”. So, professors you hear about that get multi-million grants might see half of that go to the UH administration…if a professor invents something UH gets half of the royalty…in the end, UH taxes research money far more than Athletics gets taxed.

We should also remember that UH is in a horrible budget deficit and UH Athletics loses millions of dollars each year. Football makes money of course, but Athletics overall loses money…and cutting enough money-losing sports to balance the budget would result in UH losing D-IA status.

  116. SojuNTaegu November 14, 2009 1:04 pm

    Pomai….

    44 -34 UH….

  117. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2009 1:04 pm

I would much rather see a playoff and a “nit” type bowl game setup for those that don’t make it.

Do a 16 team playoff. If Hawaii doesn’t have aspirations to make toP 20 in the nation here and there then what’s the point of having a football program…. Aim for that and maybe u see us break the 16 now and then. I hate to say it but if Boise can be in the top 20 consistently we should be too.

  118. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 1:05 pm

SMU back on top at 35-31… 1:30 left.. UTEP at SMU’s 35…2nd and 15.

  119. Kazz (blkberry_storm) November 14, 2009 1:06 pm

Green and white = Aurhyte!

  120. whitey November 14, 2009 1:08 pm

d1, you giving yourself an upgrade?? D-1A!!!!!!

  121. whitey November 14, 2009 1:09 pm

whoa, got a game at the small 10 championship

  122. whitey November 14, 2009 1:11 pm

i passed math, but don’t know how to figure this out. they call themselves the big 10 conference, but they get 11 teams. that’s why maybe they should call themselves the small 10 conference.

  123. whitey November 14, 2009 1:12 pm

the trees are timbering the condoms.

  124. Garret November 14, 2009 1:13 pm

    whitey,

The funny thing is that they keep asking Notre Dame to join their conference and Notre Dame might if they lose their NBC deal…then they will have 12 teams but they will still call themselves the Big 10. The “Big 12” is already taken…

  125. RedZone November 14, 2009 1:13 pm

    SMU goes bowling.

  126. Matt November 14, 2009 1:13 pm

JJ’s SMU Mustangs hold off UTEP and win 35-31 making SMU bowl eligible.

  127. whitey November 14, 2009 1:13 pm

actually, should be the trees when broke the condoms.

  128. RedZone November 14, 2009 1:13 pm

    Wisconsin romps.

  129. Garret November 14, 2009 1:14 pm

SMU just won and are bowl eligible. However, the Hawaii Bowl people shouldn’t be too happy because Houston lost so SMU is first place in the conference…they could end up in the Liberty Bowl instead of Hawaii.

  130. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2009 1:14 pm

    Wow SMU wins it.

Goes to show that a freshman quarterback and a young team can win with the right guidance and strategy.

  131. whitey November 14, 2009 1:15 pm

Garret, but if they add nd, they can call themselves the Small 12 Conference.

  132. whitey November 14, 2009 1:15 pm

or cheaper by the dozen conference.

  133. Garret November 14, 2009 1:15 pm

USC losing is good for BSU’s chances to have a second non-BCS school make a BCS bowl. If all the at-large candidates continue to struggle, then they might have no choice but to take BSU and TCU.

Having an upset or two in the Big 10 would also help BSU’s chances…

  134. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 1:15 pm

Wow.. SMU pulled it off.. UTEP was 1st and goal twice in the red zone but couldn’t make the TD.

Guess SMU is going bowling.. more incentive for our Warriors, now!!

    GO Mac.. GO WARRIORS!!!!!!

  135. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 1:17 pm

    SJSU 9… USU 24, 9:28 remaining

  136. Garret November 14, 2009 1:18 pm

    whitey,

LOL! I’d love for them to be called the Small 12!

Funny thing is that their TV network is called the “Big 10 Network”, so they are really branding the name and they really cannot change it.

Nobody cared when the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) eliminated their Jet Propulsion group 20 or so years ago…but they go by JPL now so people might not even know what JPL stands for. Kind of hard to abbreviate Big 10.

  137. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2009 1:20 pm

If USC loses and is still in the top 20 that’ll be the sickest and most disgusting thing I’ve seen in the rankings in a while.

  138. whitey November 14, 2009 1:22 pm

so would uh be criticized for scheduling portland state and uc davis??? don’t hear anyone criticizing playing stephen austin and uab playing smu.

  139. Old School Dave November 14, 2009 1:24 pm

Sorry to change the topic, but what does Stanford eat for their pre-game meal? They’re having their way with USC. I’ve never seen a Trojan team get pushed around like that in recent years. Simple physical domination, esp with #7 Toby Gerhart running over and through the USC defense.

  140. d1島 November 14, 2009 1:25 pm

SC Getting crushed now. Contenders to pretenders.

  141. cavewarrior November 14, 2009 1:25 pm

Hi…my name is Musto…Given the hardships of the people living around the USC campus, the $4+M per year paid to Mr Carroll is irresponsible.

    🙂

Wow, the Wolfpack are taking it to the Bulldogs and Hill.

  142. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2009 1:25 pm

Whitey, only critisims would be if u schedule those teams and expect national attention or rankings if you have a good season. Also it would be a hard sell for uh to sell tickets. WHO we play is a huge factor in the amount of tickets sold.

  143. LizKauai (iPhone) November 14, 2009 1:34 pm

#98. Totally agree. That is a nice world. Uh oh. Power is blinking at the airport again. Thunderclaps are louder. At least I have the manju. Argh. I can’t eat wheat and sweets right now. I’m doomed.

good to see that our tsaikos are getting into game mood. i got to warm up the space craft, go pick up some prizes for my golf club, then to the darkside for the game. will try to see if i will see any tsaikos on tv. have fun gang.

  146. Manoa November 14, 2009 1:43 pm

June’s SMU team is now bowl eligible. They are in first place in their conference division, so they still have a shot at the Liberty Bowl.

June is now coaching a balanced running and passing attack. For the third game in a row– ran more times than passed, and scored more TD’s running than passing.

  147. Garret November 14, 2009 1:47 pm

    Manoa,

It probably isn’t a coincidence that all three of the games that they ran more than they passed were with a true freshman (who only started half a season in high school) starting at QB.

I’m hoping that UH runs the ball a good amount today, and thought it was an interesting coincidence that Ron Lee mentioned at the Na Koa lunch how he discussed SMU’s running game with JJ during the week before UH ran so much against Utah State.

  148. RedZone November 14, 2009 1:50 pm

JJ has a bigtime runningback and he did use a tightend near the endzone.

  149. RedZone November 14, 2009 1:56 pm

    Time to go.

  150. Manoa November 14, 2009 1:59 pm

    Yes, Garret.
Having a freshman QB but also having two good running backs, including one who transferred from Miami were factors in June’s deciding to run so much and include the pistol formation.

  151. LizKauai (iPhone) November 14, 2009 2:00 pm

Hmm. No plane in sight yet.

  152. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 2:02 pm

    final score..

    What does that mean?

  156. lava November 14, 2009 2:35 pm

Tinoco dropped those practices passes on purpose to take some of the pressure off the coaches — the pressure I’ve put on the coaches for not giving Mike some game time. Funny how it all goes in circles.

Rotate the receivers and only then let the guys who make plays play, and let the guys who don’t make plays sit.

  157. 99club November 14, 2009 2:59 pm

Good evening Tsaikos! Watching TCU-Utah game….7-0 TCU right now. I’ll be watching the UH game on ESPN360, which has a surprisingly good picture for online streaming. Utah tied it up. 7-7 now.

Hawaii has a better team overall, then it deserves.

Sorry, but seeing that crowd just ticks me off. I wish I could be there.

  165. HAWNSTLN November 14, 2009 5:17 pm

  234. HAWNSTLN November 14, 2009 6:20 pm

You gotta be worried – our last two drives down inside their 25 and we end up with ZERO points. No wonder NM took a knee – they were just happy to have those results – zero points after two nice drives! We are again mis firing inside our 25. No imagination and no confidence in our PK game. ouch!!

  235. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 6:23 pm

Unlike Salas to drop three in a row… Fonoti injured due to a clip… hope he returns for the second half.

  236. kalani November 14, 2009 6:35 pm

my nephew is sitting at the game, down low near Vili and just called me. the game had to be stopped because Vili and his group continued to bang the drums during live action after repeatedly being told not to play. An official,he said he thought it was Rick Sherif, said loud enuf for him to hear, to mrs fehoko that if they did it again UH would face NCAA problems because apparently they are not supposed to play during live action. not like Vili is new at this. this is amazing.

  237. Kekoa (iPhone) November 14, 2009 6:37 pm

Nope…i’m in section F right at the tunnel.

Barry M came by before leaving the stadium. He was on the field shooting photos for the Samoan News. He had lots of shots of Moniz and others paying their respects to the Tsaiko’s!

    Updating the stat:

3rd quarter scoring this season against D-IA competition:
    UH 0, Washington State 7
    UH 0, UNLV 7
    UH 0, La Tech 14
    UH 0, Idaho 7
    UH 0, Fresno State 14
    UH 2, BSU 10
    UH 0, Nevada 7
UH 7, Utah State 14 (not counting the TD to start the 4th quarter and I’m glad they missed another TD when their QB missed the wide open WR)
    UH 0, NMSU 6

Total is now 86-9 against D-IA competition.

So, the trend goes like this:
    2006: +106
    2007: +14
    2008: -56
    2009: -77 (86-9 over 9 games)

judging from the grumpling around the State concerning Mac’s salary, one thing is clear, the tsaiko-san clan is living in lala land and are koolaid abusers extraordinare. while they constantly condemn those who mention MAC’s salary, the real voices of hawaii speak louder…..have fun….the US fleet is coming to town in 2 weeks followed by Goliath…..sweet dreams.

  309. madeinhawaii November 14, 2009 8:51 pm

Kind of disappointed with the total points, but very happy with the win.
Too many catchable balls dropped by our receivers. That interception for a touchdown by NMSU should never have left Taylor’s grasp.

    Lots of dropsies tonight.

Hope Moniz is better by next Saturday. Same with all the other players. Hope they all get heathy and back up to 100% by Navy and most definitely Wisconsin.

Post Game Comments Dedicated to “THE COUNSELOR”

    1) I am happy we won this game. Congrats to the players, coaches, and fans!
    .
    2) Good to see our punter letting loose and getting some real good kicks.

    Now the not so good……

    1) Folks….this is NEW MEXICO STATE….lets remember that. I don’t like to disparage a team but when Bobby Curran and Kekaula make it a point mention that NMSU is dead last in offense and somewhere near last in pass defense it only goes to show that we need LOTS AND LOTS of work yet on the offensive side of the ball. The score was rather disappointing as I was hoping that maybe we could pull at least 2 more touchdowns against this team.
    .
    2) Fans are upset about the lack of “second half adjustments.”….I offer this, maybe the coaches ARE MAKING them…but for whatever reason they are not outsmarting/out thinking the opponents coaching/adjustments. You can’t deny this as a possibility.
    .
2a) Did you notice how dominant our offensive line was in the first half?….Never could touch Moniz (Great job o-line!)…yet second half came and all of a sudden our O-line looked like waffle cut french fries.
    .
    3) It may just be me but the 4th down conversions instead of the field goal? Can somebody explain to me why we are NOT giving more “game time” to Enos when we a) have the lead and b) the conventional thing to do would be to kick. Its not like we were any where near a rout where kicking a field goal would be seen as rubbing salt in the wound. In fact history has shown us that we don’t adjust properly for the second half and can easily give up points and may possibly lose any lead we have.
    .
    4) Honestly I felt we put up a MUCH better performance last week against Utah St. To stand a chance against Navy, let alone Wisconsin will be nothing short of a football miracle imho.
We have some good and positive things to build on (Salas, Punting/Kicking, Running game) but we have a ton of negatives that need to get corrected.

    5) I wouldn’t say San Jose is in the bag for us. It’s on the road and well with Dick Tomey you just never never NEVER know what he has up his sleeves.Trick plays, reverses, etc etc….are things we have difficulties against.

    PREDICTIONS:

Win at San Jose by the hairs of our chinny chin chin. Will have stellar turnouts by fans at the Navy and Wisconsin game but will not be “bowling’ during christmas.

However like a wise man once told me at a bar in Nuuanu…If 2 teams show up to play football in a stadium….ANYTHING is possible and ALWAYS get chance! So i will leave it at that 🙂

    GO WARRIORS!

  319. al November 14, 2009 10:14 pm

i know it was new mexico st. but, when was the last time that the warriors defense did not allow a td?

sad moments seeing lwj and moniz on the sidelines with injuries.

  320. al November 14, 2009 10:19 pm

i can’t figure out why we didn’t go for the (second) fg when we were up by 18 pts. that fg would have been a 21 point separation.

like whitey said, if we have no confidence in the fg kicker then change em.

somewhere along the line in the last three games we will need a last second fg to pull out a victory.

  321. al November 14, 2009 10:21 pm

i agree that our halftime adjustments have not been so effective. shouldn’t we anticipate adjustments from our opponents and have a counter punch planned?

seems like opponents have adjusted by the second quarter and it takes us too long to recognize that.

  322. al November 14, 2009 10:26 pm

but a win is a win is a win.

  323. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2009 10:30 pm

    al,

good thoughts. just along the lines that I was thinking. my dad pointed out the same thing where if we are in a game where the score is 21-24 or something going into the second half or needing a field goal we might be dead meat. points are points and we should be taking them.

i just dont get why we did not go for them in this game….if its Enos, is there anyone else that can do field goals for us?

  324. al November 14, 2009 10:33 pm

    lost in the shuffle….
    michelle wie.
she is tied for first going in to tomorrow’s final round.

  325. al November 14, 2009 10:46 pm

it was reported that blumberg was given a chance during practice to compete for the job. however, i guess enos did better.

funny thing is that enos’ fg percentage in jc ball was nothing to scream about.

  329. Mrs. A-House November 14, 2009 11:20 pm

    Momo –

You’ve got mail… please confirm receipt. Mahalo!

  330. Slugger November 15, 2009 12:39 am

    iwwthm,

According to a tv guide I saw, the replay is tomorrow at 10 am on chan. 5.

Oh, and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is Daniel Johnson, not Rice. 🙂

    Night all!

    Great game, guys!!!

  331. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 15, 2009 12:52 am

    Slugger,

    Thanks much!

Thanks, I also overheard that it plays on tv after the game too. I wonder if this only applies to those who have bought the ppv package.

JCS AkA “Daniel Johnson”….haha I was trying to figure out who he was tonight but couldn’t find him on the sidelines. I hope we can see him in action one of these days!.

  332. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 5:37 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Hope those of you who made it to the game enjoyed yourselves. plusses and minuses watching ppv.

    Go Warriors.

  333. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 5:41 am

    Good morning Tsaiko Nation!

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we’ve already got a lot to give thanks for.

Top of my list are the Tsaiko’s. A special visit from Mr. Weir, and a hearty congratulations from the Na Koa Hui he represents, brought much pride to the Clan.

It was a grand gesture on his part to bring the 2nd bike to our t-gate party. He allowed us a chance to see the results of our effort to supply the athletes with a much needed exercise vehicle.

    Thanks Don!

  334. wafan November 15, 2009 5:44 am

    A super Sunday to all.

Heal up wounded Warriors. Three more to go!

  335. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 5:46 am

    Kekoa.

    good morning.
    thanks for the info.

  336. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 5:52 am

    Good morning my Hilo brother!

You missed a feel good moment at the cabana yesterday. It was followed by another one at the stadium shortly thereafter.

After the game, you must have felt hunger pangs! Julie’s PBS allowed the entire crew a chance to enjoy her soup. It was the perfect way to cut the trail dust off the celebrants of yet another Warrior victory!

  337. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 5:55 am

    Good morning Kekoa.

I miss Honolulu only because it gives me a chance to hang out with
the clan. but I’ve been thinking about you guys. Be well.

  338. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 6:05 am

    Bhf2 ~

I know you refuse to take credit for ‘pushing’ the bike project, and thats understandable. And yes, we all had a collective hand in it…but it was YOUR dogged determination that brought it to the finish line.

Take a bow big guy…ya done good!

  339. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 6:09 am

    Kekoa,

do one better. improve the third quarter offense stats

Rolo says he’s getting info from the receivers and adjusting…

    what adjusting? what adjusting?

reminds me of Carroll O’Connor, the General in Kelly’s Heroes.

but he doesn’t look the part.

  340. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 6:20 am

You sly devil…you had ‘bug’ planted at da cabana! When ST came aftah, dat wuz one of da 1st topics we wen tackle!

  341. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 6:27 am

    Kekoa,

you guyz ready fo talk on da blog about how fo make da change?

i no like yak cuz den you going change my name to huhuhilo.

  342. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 6:31 am

Bhf ~ Go up da volcano. Make Ho’okupu. Trow your flask inside!…eh!…no go buy one cheap replacement!

Make one sincere effort or you goin’ be on da injury list wit wun ‘mumu’ leg!

  343. wastsidesview November 15, 2009 6:31 am

    Luck of the Irish?

By the middle of the fourth quarter Saturday night, fans at Heinz Stadium (Pitts) were chanting,
    “Bye-bye, Charlie! Bye-bye, Charlie!”

Weiss has 6 years remaining, ole Charlie has a losing record since his magical first year and hasnt beaten a top 10 team?
How about losing to Navy 2 out of the last 3 years after beating them for nearly a half-century. Lol.

At 35-25 Weiss is at the same winning percentage as Bob Davie and what’s his name–when they became former ND coaches.

Dump Charlie and bring in his successors?

Hire Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer, Paul Johnson, Jim Harbaugh or Jon Gruden?

    Cost?

    $20 m!

    Note to:
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick….
be careful of your karma, in your next life you could be Hawaii’s AD.

  344. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 6:32 am

    Kekoa,

I’ll say dis: dunno who to grume about first, da guy on da left or da guy on da right. an i tink da indecision is foisted upon da players.

we got the physical players. now allz we needz is da mentalz. both playerz and da coaches.

Carroll O’Connor, the General, is a great example. he had no clue

but we needed his play to make Clint look good.

    ahhhh.. i like happy endings.

  345. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 6:40 am

    Kekoa,

good one. except i been cutting back on da cheap stuff.

you know, i wuz habut habut wit JJ for hs uinhappy ending. a good
guy always has a great finish. he neva have a great finish for us, no matter da Herman Frazier was like, o wow, he neva suck it up fo us, no wat i mean? an if you gonna suck it up, toming is erryting, no wait fo
da last minute, no wat i mean?

translation: to make da best of this crop, da next three game planning, including the third quarters in the next three games, starts right now.

so… if yu wan me to go Halemaumau an make one offrin, gotta bring my offren from Honolulu. i wouldn’t have it any odda way.

  346. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 6:41 am

Huhu Hilo wit da mumu leg! Got a nice ring to dat.

My idea is to come out of half time with a scripted plan based on anticipated adjustments from da odda team. What worked for us will be their focus. We come back with something totally unexpected.

A little attitude adjustment to clear da cob webs.

  347. wastsidesview November 15, 2009 6:43 am

    bhf2,

apply your Godgiven native Hawaiian commonsense (and you have plenty) and discard the spoon-fed koolaid by the santsai klan–it’s the coaching stupid!

  348. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 6:48 am

okay, now i feel betta. gotdat offa my chess.

    still yet, our offense…. hmmm….

Pomai, put dis down as my realistic choice:
    UH – SJSU
    17-10

BUT…. if we make one minah change at halftime, a la duck tape

    den UH v SJSU

    42-17

  349. Kekoa (iPhone) November 15, 2009 6:58 am

Bhf ~ One positive change made by slugger was a sight to behold! Tell you about it via email. Trolls are up sniping early this morning. Laterz!

  350. westsidesview November 15, 2009 7:02 am

look, garrett is a fairly conservative well intended poster.
What he lacks in actual football acumen he makes up in persistency for accuracy and truth.
Moreover, he has stumbled into a 3rd quarter bermuda triangle that has offered more redflags than enigma.
    Coaches make adjustments not players.
When they dont–something is terribly wrong.

  351. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 7:04 am

    wastsideview,

    now now now

a few things i’ve learned lately.

being a good guy does not always translate well.

there are thorns in life, even for the good guyz.
thats part of life. sometimes we feel we don’t deserve it

but as Clint said in Unforgiven, deserves got nothing to do with it.
    sumtin like dat.

its clear that our players are smiling on the sidelines,
and the Warriors are our team.

The strain shows on Coach’s face. i no ALL the coaches are trying
    their best.

He’s our coach. We gotta back him up. Our future depends on him.
Thats the fact. Just gotta try to encourage him to let Rolovich do all
the job of Offensive Coordinator. Not because Rolo is better… Just
doesn’t look good to have 2 brothers be the OC and DC. JMO. You make Rolo solely responsible, then the third quarter, its all on him.

that, imo, would be better for us.

  352. westsidesview November 15, 2009 7:05 am

eh, kekoa, excuse me, im maoli, not troll. you have me confused with the immigrants.

  353. d1島 November 15, 2009 7:09 am

    Great Morning All!

I love the smell of VICTORY in the morning! 🙂

Mahalo to the usual Wake-up/Set-up Cabana Crew.

Many thanks to UHFan808 for her many hours of diligent labor in producing her Frikkin Awesome PBS!
…and to all who contributed to a fine feast.

bhf2, no indictment on rolo. that’s your jury panel. no put words in the waha….. buck starts and ends at the top. dats my ting– kappish?

    btw, how’s ur cuz pili?

  355. Pomai November 15, 2009 7:12 am

wastsidesview #349, you had a good comment up until the last word, now could you please explain why you would want to call bighilofan2 stupid for surely he is not, he is a graduated from college, became a lawyer and loves warrior football, so please explain why you felt the need to call him stupid? I mean I am just curious??

  356. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 7:13 am

    d1

    howzit

    VICTORY does smell good.

    Garrett,
represent me too at this coming game. BUT

if I get to Portland Thursday, maybe I can catch SJSU on my way back. Will no tomorrow. Please o pretty please.

  357. 808ike November 15, 2009 7:17 am

    BHF2 welcome back.

  358. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 7:19 am

    hey you guyz….

lets put all da habut for anuuda day, anudda place.

    hiya Pomai
my skin is tick tick tick.

    hiya westsideview,
i don’t pretend to speak for anybody else but me.
an i’m using da Carrolll O’Connot character to
juxtapose call attention to da … da.
hmmm… between .da dis an da dat.

and my darling cuz is just fine

  359. westsidesview November 15, 2009 7:27 am

pomai, bhf2 can represent himself and im sure he has the intellectual muster to know my statement was a takeoff on a well known presidential campaign phrase bandied about during the Bush ’92 elections–“its the economy stupid”.
    How old are you?
You are more impetuous and challenged rather than curious arent you?

  360. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 7:27 am

    hiya 808ike

    westsideview,
have to choose, eeda I change my name to Huhu Hilo
or suck it up, and act like a Warrior fan.

it was hurtful to call Oceanic yesterday to order ppv. called about 2pm, and the Oceanic lady says “you’re the first person I’ve talked to today thats signed up for the game. everyone else is signing up for the fight.”

    true story.

  361. Pomai November 15, 2009 7:29 am

Howzit BHF2, hope you can make da game in San Jose, should be a good one. Will you be coming over for the Navy game? Got to give it to sailorblue when we win over his beloved Navy team.

  362. bighilofan2 November 15, 2009 7:32 am

    Westsideview,

    you gotta talk nice too.

The people to whom you’re speaking are reallly nice people. and i’ve learned the world is filled with all kinds of people, and intellects, and the
Tsaikos are an extremely well meaning band of peeps.

so play nice please. otherwise, the enemies of my friends are my enemies, you know what i mean? play nice. and apologize when you know you’ve gotten out of hand. or be like me, go away for a timeout.

  363. westsidesview November 15, 2009 7:36 am

    bhf2,
great to hear about p-aloha, she is no ka oi.

bhf2–just use your mana’o i’o, you have the stuff to ferret out the truth.

  364. 808ike November 15, 2009 7:38 am

    BHF2,

Last night LizK and I were talking about you. Glad you are doing well.

  365. westsidesview November 15, 2009 7:42 am

bhf2–dont protect the wrong doers–you know betta.
pomai opened his mouth prematurally and passed judgement bc of his ignorance. he wants too be so self righteous and has an attitude–he initiated the negativety. he should apoligize to me for being impetuous–i dont need his two penny comments. you should lecture him brah, you were a former prosecuter and are familiar with instigators–no?

  366. Pomai November 15, 2009 7:43 am

westsidesview old enough, and no just curious.

  367. d1島 November 15, 2009 7:44 am

    Old school Dave #76

    Well said.

  375. madeinhawaii November 15, 2009 8:03 am

    My gripe..

The only touchdown that NMSU got was that interception returned for a touchdown that went through Javonte’s hands and off his shoulder. If not for that, our defense would have shut down NMSU completely. NMSU didn’t even get that PAT.

    That’s it.

Okay… okay… muffed field goal attempts… Bring that other kid in for the field goals under 40 yds, already.

    odda den dat…

    I’m a happy camper…

SJSU next week.. ! HEAL WARRIORS!

Actually.. I’m just waiting for the next blog.

Someone elsewhere said that Moniz may be gettting too predictable in that he is eyeballing his intended receiver from the get go… He’s not locking the safeties or corners by looking elsewhere before he lets it fly.

    Anybody else notice the same?
