Game day: New Mexico State

It’s another must-win game for the Warriors, who are playing at Aloha Stadium for the first time in 28 days. (Yes, a UH supporter could have completed a rehab stint between home games.)

The availability of NMSU quarterback Matt Christian (left clavicle) and UH right wideout Royce Pollard  (right hamstring) is in question, and that will impact defensive strategies. The Warriors, who have blitzed eight and 10 times the past two games, are expected to amp up the pressure against an ailing Christian or his inexperienced backup. If Pollard can’t go, the Aggies can play more zone coverages because no other receiver has proven to be a deep-route threat.

The Warriors can keep alive their WAC title hopes with a victory. Despite being a double-digit favorite, the Warriors don’t need a knockout. The Warriors — and the athletic department’s fragile budget —  just can’t afford a loss.

* * * * *

Here’s the take from the Las Cruces Sun-News’ sports editor:

Hawaii will look to get out quickly on NMSU and if the Warriors are successful it could get a little out of control. If the Aggies can stay competitive for the first two quarters this will be a good football game. At that point, who knows where it will go?

Which brings us to the main question surrounding the contest: can the Aggies hang around? If they can, they have a shot. I do not see them blowing Hawaii out, so their hope is to pull out a close one. If they’re in the game they can win it late — it would be anyone’s ballgame at that point.

An early big moment — forced turnover, TD, whatever it may be — would be very beneficial for Aggies as it would stem Hawaii’s momentum.

I believe the Aggies are more equipped now than they have been in the past to beat Hawaii. Does that mean they will? No, it doesn’t mean that. But they’re capable of doing so, where in the past I don’t think they were.

One thing that’s obvious: if they want to win here, they have to play a good game. Seriously. They’re not going to have a chance if they’re not on top of things.

The travel for this game is killer. And the fact the Aggies will be playing a game that’s a 10 p.m. kickoff in Las Cruces. Hawaii typically gets charged up and plays faster on its homefield.

Sun-News’ prediction: Hawaii 37, New Mexico State 27.

    Go, Warriors!!!

    Have a great Homecoming!

    Let Pollard heal up and give backups some much needed experience.

  4. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 8:33 am

    ST, thanks for your article about NMSU’s Rogers in the SA. I wanted to hear more about what the Aggies are throwing at us, but the 4th down debate kept going on and on. How about their defense? Are they any good against the pass? Run?

    Hello, Goodbye!

  6. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 8:43 am

    papajoe2:

    I broke down the game in today’s paper, but basically the Aggies are a zone-read offense (then again, isn’t everybody lately?), and Turner is really good interior runner. Their tackles are very good. Usually guards lead the way on screens, but their tackles are quick enough to get into space. Their offensive concepts are similar to Nevada’s, but instead of operating out of the pistol, Turner is to the side of the quarterback. They’re usually in a four-wide formation (unlike UH, NMSU uses a tight end instead of a second slotback), but they can motion a receiver into the backfield (or, on fly plays, through the backfield).

  7. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 8:44 am

    And as always… the *implied* “killer travel” only applies to visiting teams, and never to UH when we take those long excursions to the mainland. Meaning, every other team, to include BigTen schools, can use that excuse. But, when we use it, even some of our own “fans” whine about it’s usage. Weird.

  8. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 8:45 am

    #6…ST…

    Then we better pay attention to that receiver in motion, since Boise’s motion dudes burned us on a few occasions.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    And how about those Wahine! Great going!

    BEAT NMSU!!

    TOP TEN

  11. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 8:52 am

    I don’t think a “late” start should be a problem for the Aggies. College-aged guys usually are on the top of their game after 10 p.m. I think waiting around all day to play is a problem. I mean, you don’t want to be cooped up in a hotel room. But you have to limit how much walking around or (if any) beach time.

  12. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 8:52 am

    Hope we go in with the mindset that we’re going to methodically move those chains and get into a rhythm early. I’d like to see as close to a 100% 3rd-down conversion rate as possible, instead of these anemic 20% conversion games.

    I think our defense will continue to play with intensity.

    I am praying for our Special Teams.

  16. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 8:54 am

    I envision UH jumping out to a good start, and playing very well in the first half.

    And then things slow down in the third quarter, mainly because of the extended halftime break because of homecoming.

  17. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 8:55 am

    Oh, I forgot one more thing… Please protect the ball! Don’t give any of the rest of our opponents any hope!

    Nah, only kidding.

    What is the NFL’s fascination with playing in London?

    NFL Europa failed.

    And a sports’ popularity is more stable from the ground up, meaning football will never be widely successful until it’s played at the youth and high school levels.

    And teams can make more money for home games than playing overseas. Can’t charge seat licensing for one-time-only games.

    I keeping envisioning all of these efforts producing a kicker like the one in “The Replacements.”

    Help our Warriors get the W. Even if you don’t “BELIEVE”, send an Abundance of Joy to our Warriors!

    Joy gives us wings! In times of joy our strength is more vital, our intellect keener, and our understanding less clouded. We seem better able to cope with the world and to find our sphere of usefulness. But when sadness visits us we become weak, our strength leaves us, our comprehension is dim and our intelligence veiled. The actualities of life seem to elude our grasp, the eyes of our spirits fail to discover the sacred mysteries, and we become even as dead beings.

    There is no human being untouched by these two influences; but all the sorrow and the grief that exist come from the world of matter — the spiritual world bestows only the joy!

    UH men’s basketball team gets commitment from prep center

    By Brian McInnis

    POSTED: 03:22 a.m. HST, Oct 22, 2011

    Share

    The Hawaii men’s basketball team picked up its first new commitment for the 2012-13 season in Evergreen (Wash.) High senior center Caleb Dressler late Friday night.

    Dressler, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound native of Vancouver, Wash., said he offered his oral commitment to coach Gib Arnold on his official visit to UH after seeing a Rainbow Warriors practice and the Ohana Hoopfest at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday.

    “(Seeing those things) hit home the fact that I was home, and I wanted to seal the deal before the deal got away from me,” Dressler said in a phone interview from his hotel. “It was a great deal for me.”

    He cannot sign a national letter of intent to UH until the start of the early signing period on Nov. 9, but said he plans to do so.

    The lefty, who is most comfortable with his back to the basket, averaged 17 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game as a junior for Evergreen. Power forward and center are positions of need for UH.

    He chose UH over two other final options, Portland State and Montana State. He had previously visited both.

    Dressler represents one of two scholarships available for next season.

    WARRIORMOJO #47 – thanks! Think the performance might have resulted in #48!

  50. WarriorMojo October 22, 2011 11:49 am

    Tom, I totally agree. Afterwards I was telling Coach Gib that I really enjoyed the coaches’ performance, especially the waving palm tree effect. He cracked up and said, “Yeah, we thought of that one late last night.” The dude has major charisma.

  59. kev-1 October 22, 2011 12:49 pm

    Sitting around watching college ball today and I have been having these thoughts. Many of you probably won’t like it, since there are so many “old school fans” (compliment) on this blog, but here they are . . .

    I think it is evident that UH has taken a few steps back since JJ left (sorry to dwell, but my thoughts are related to him). HOWEVER, I still think we have a solid team with solid players that can make up those steps. So I’m not quite worried about getting back to a high level of play on the field, I think that is right around the corner. But what I have realized after watching some other teams on TV lately, is our appearance, or style. Warning, some of you may consider this topic trivial, but players and a younger fan base don’t.

    When JJ made the uniform changes, he was really ahead of the game (along with Oregon) with what he was doing. I know people didn’t like the silver, but the point remains the same: the variety of color combinations are exciting to fans to see. The players get pumped up about new looks, and so do the fans. I liked having different color unis AND different color helmets (maybe not silver though). Look around, almost everyone is doing it. Why not UH?

    I am getting bored with the black-only at home games. Here is my wish list for UH uni base colors. Combinations of any would be great.

    – White unis with a white Helmet with “H” logo

    – Green unis with current helmet

    – Black unis with matt black helmet

    – Gray unis with matt gray helmet

    – similar to how teams use the camo print, I would like to see an all polynesian (or tribal type) printed uni with matching helmet

    – Throw-back uni with rainbow helmet

    – and of course the current helmet color with matching color uni

    Mix any of these up, and we would look great. Whether people agree with me or not, style makes a difference, especially for the fans. These types of things increase excitement surrounding the team, and that is always a good thing. We should not let the advances instilled by JJ (like him or not) slip away. Bring it back.

  60. kev-1 October 22, 2011 12:49 pm

    BTW . . . GO WARRIORS!

  61. kev-1 October 22, 2011 12:51 pm

    Especially the throw backs. So many other programs have a throw back uni as a tribute to the past. WHY DON’T WE?

  62. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 12:54 pm

    I beg to differ…

    Notre Dame has a boring uniform. Fans still support… even with losing records.

    Michigan has a boring uniform. Fans still support… even with losing records.

  63. SteveM October 22, 2011 12:55 pm

    re: #58

    I coincidently will be bringing some furikake rice (mom made.) But I’m running late. ETA 1400.

  64. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 12:56 pm

    I’d rather we concentrate on producing and fielding winning teams in all sports, rather than how pretty we look.

    If we can be consistent in double-digit-wins seasons, the fans won’t care how we look.

  65. SAWARRIOR October 22, 2011 1:01 pm

    #59 i agree 100%. i saw a espn special and the unis do work great for sales, recruiting etc…

    #62 we are NOT Notre Dame or Michigan, not even close–so not fair to compare those programs to ours.

  66. d1shima October 22, 2011 1:13 pm

    Not gonna make it to the TsaikoGate. Mrs. d1shima and I both under the weather (and even #1 son!) so will try to head out later for the game only this week 🙁

    OTOH, the Wildcats roll, 45-7! One more sack for #2! 🙂

  67. kev-1 October 22, 2011 1:18 pm

    Fans don’t care about how a team looks? I beg to differ with you. Please don’t confuse my conversation piece as my sole interest regarding the team. I too think what we do on the field is more important. But image makes you relevent (not solely, but it is a factor). If you ignore that, you are truly being close minded.

    And as SAWarrior points out, we are not ND or Michigan. YET, if you pay close enough attention, Michigan will wear a throw back or something different once in a while. As a matter of fact, they just did last week or something. Notre Dame too. You just aren’t paying attention.

  68. d1shima October 22, 2011 1:20 pm

    New unis….recruiting

  69. d1shima October 22, 2011 1:22 pm

    Must be the Ducks’ unis…they looked really fast!

  70. kev-1 October 22, 2011 1:25 pm

    Case and point . . . ND is sporting a NEW LOOK (actually just a new gold) helmet right now. Okay, its just the helmet, but just another example.

  71. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 1:25 pm

    LOL!

    Who said we are Notre Dame or Michigan? It was a comparison with boring uniforms and fan support, regardless of how boring or fresh a teams uniform is.

    Kev-1… my response was to your first post. Your throwback post came after I had already typed, even though I had run to make some coffee before posting it.

    You say we need to be fashion conscious in order to bring fans in. I’m disagreeing. And I’m wrong? It’s my opinion. So, you agree with each other. So, you guys would rather we look pretty, even though we lose, as long as we look good on the field or on tv. LOL.

    As long as our equipment is state of the art, keeping up with technology, and we win the majority of our games, I couldn’t care less. Guess my priority is different than yours. Guess I’m not a fan if the looks are of no concern to me. No need agree with me. Pau.

  72. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 1:28 pm

    D1 and your boss… and #1… take care and get well soon! Never a good time to be sick.

    Howzeet Gangeez! 🙂

    Game Day!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  74. kev-1 October 22, 2011 1:36 pm

    Wesside . . . if that’s what you take from my comments, then fine. You made the comparison to ND and Michigan, not me. I just added to it. Image attracts. Do ugly guys get hot chicks? Okay, maybe sometimes. I don’t mean to disrespect or disregard your opinion. That is not my intent. I am merely stating mine. I am not right, your not wrong. Truly the product on the field is what matters most. And my point is that image is a part of that.

    If UH were a team full of scrubs, I would not be making this argument. I feel we are a good team that could be great around the corner. Recruiting would help, and young kids look at the whole picture when they decide on a school. UH is mildly nationally relevant. Why not kick it up a notch?

    And when you keep saying “look pretty,” you make it sound like I want them running around in glitter and silk. Come on, I’m talking tough, new age, new technology (as you say) look.

  75. kev-1 October 22, 2011 1:36 pm

    I do respect your opinion, regardless if we disagree. I just like mine better, just as you do yours.

    We are both Warrior fans.

  81. wafan October 22, 2011 2:02 pm

    Best thing about changing jerzeys is upper campus and retailers make more money, ’cause UHAD sure does not get much.

  82. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 2:04 pm

    Kev-1… All I’m saying is there’s a bunch of schools out there that haven’t and don’t need to change to draw fan interest. When we lived in Michigan, Rich Rodriguez had fine seasons, (3-9, 5-7, and 7-5), and yet they still were able to fill that stadium (110k+) and recruit 5* kids. From ’96 to now, how many times did we (UH) change uniform styles? There were at least four major changes I can think of. Did it really bring more fans to the stadium? I’d like to think the team’s performance was the main factor in determining attendance.

    There are lots of schools across the country whose uniforms are well, iconic, for lack of a better word. Fans young and old can relate to their team because of it. I just don’t happen to think the way we look will draw fans in. Recently, we had a new look in 2008, and then another new look this year. Has our attendance changed for the better because of it? I happen to think our uniforms are good as they are, not boring, and they represent the whole state, as opposed to just UH.

    You keep bringing up Coach Jones. Fine…

    Coach Jones not only changed our uniform when he first came in, he also engineered the biggest turnaround in college football history, taking us from our losing streak to a 9-win season. THAT is what generated interest. I don’t believe the new uniform and helmet were the reasons for bringing fans in. Disagree all you want.

  83. kev-1 October 22, 2011 2:15 pm

    Wesside – it is hard to engage in an argument with you because you only read what you want to read. You keep insisting that all I am talking about is the “look.” I don’t know how often I have to point out that the performance is first, but you read whatevery you want and keep saying childish things like “disagree all you want.”

    Try to open your mind a little, and your eyes and read my whole argument. If we had the same kind of budget, history, and everthing else that schools like Michigan had, we would have the same talent. We would not need to worry about an image as much as the small schools do. But you won’t recognize this point, because you are obviously stubborn.

    I don’t know how many times I have to say that I respect your opinion and that it is fine for us to disagree, because that is what people do. But you’ll probably respond again with another hint at me being wrong or not knowing what I am talking about and how your right.

    cucumber, ginger, vinegar, sugar = going eat Namasu.

  85. kev-1 October 22, 2011 2:17 pm

    And yes I keep bringing up JJ, because if you knew anything about the man, you would know that he sees the whole picture. Talent, skill, recruiting, facilities, technique, IMAGE, and any other advantage he would see that would put a small-mid market team on a level competetive with bigger named teams.

  86. kev-1 October 22, 2011 2:19 pm

    And again . . . GO WARRIORS!!!! In whatever you happen to be wearing.

  87. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:25 pm

    Mike Tyson didn’t have a uniform. Just shorts and shoes with no socks, later ankle socks.

  88. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:30 pm

    Did you hear about the Polynesian dancers getting pepper sprayed by the police while doing the haka? I think it was in Utah. Could it be that the haka was so ferocious that the officers paniced? LOL! If that’s their atitude over there, then why do our local players go there.

  89. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:30 pm

    #86, LIKE.

    Missing all who are unable to get to the T-Gate.

    get well soon, Mr and Mrs D-1 and son!

    More and more folks are arriving… The day is rolling in wonderful FFFFFF’s !

  91. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:38 pm

    Hey d1. Take care of yourself and ohana. I going miss you at the tailgate. Wait a minute….. I not going to the tailgate. Get well soon.

  92. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:41 pm

    I hope the Warriors and coaches are well prepared for today’s game. A blowout is okay, but main ting win da game.

  93. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 2:46 pm

    Kev-1…

    Sitting around watching college ball today and I have been having these thoughts. Many of you probably won’t like it, since there are so many “old school fans” (compliment) on this blog, but here they are . . .

    You start out saying you know people will disagree with you, then you call me narrow minded and say I’m not comprehending and only reading what I want because I don’t agree with you. C’mon, man. I read and understand the point you’re making. I just don’t happen to agree with it. Why keep trying to argue the point to try to convince me otherwise? I disagree. Period. Pau.

    I won’t even touch that childish label and being clueless on Coach Jones.

    ~~~~~
    Looking forward to a good game. Just hope we come out and get in synch early on offense, and keep playing hard on defense. Still praying for a smooth game for our Special Teams.
  96. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 2:53 pm
    Police said they were blocking an exit and told them to move back.
    But it was scheduled and planned to be at that spot evidently.
    The police claimed they did not know that.
    So they felt it necessary to use pepperspary and clubs
    scaring one little 4 year old in the crowd…
  97. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 2:54 pm
    Oh well, God bless our police. Hard job. Hope they respect
    the people, tho…
  98. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:56 pm
    Thanks for the vid Ipu Man. Yup, so sad.
  99. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 2:58 pm
    Poloce should have just stayed back and watched and enjoyed. It would have been over in a minute. Maybe they wanted the rival team to win and was mad about it.
  100. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 3:00 pm
    I think our police know about the haka and respects it. They dodono.
  101. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 3:11 pm
    Just saw Boise State on tv. They are not allowed to use their blue uniforms at home on the blue turf during MWC games so they did the next best thing. Dull gray. Almost same difference but they didn’t break the rules. Thinking……….thinking……thinking… sleeping.
  102. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 3:17 pm
    Wonder how the new rules at the stadium tailgate parking doing?
    No tossing football, right? Maybe toss bread pudding?
  103. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 3:22 pm
    My #99, would have been nice if I spelled police right too. Oh well, public school thing.
  104. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 3:22 pm
    Almost 4 o’clock. Two more hours till kickoff?
  105. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 3:24 pm
    All eyes will be on the special teams, you can be sure.
    Bet MAC is sure…
  106. kev-1 October 22, 2011 3:45 pm
    Wesside #93 . . . not trying to convince you. I agree to disagree, but I felt like you weren’t. And that is totally okay. Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way. Not intended. Maybe I misread what you wrote. Shouldn’t have said the “childish” thing, that was childish. And okay, I’m pau too. I appreciate your perspective as a Warrior fan, regardless.
  107. Shoko October 22, 2011 3:46 pm
    Unis don’t attract recruits and they certainly don’t increase attendence. You think some highly-touted player out of H.S. is thinking about unis rather then how they fit into a system? LOL!
  108. kev-1 October 22, 2011 3:47 pm
    papajoe2 #101 . . . I thought that was just a rumor about not being able to use the blue on blue, but I guess not. True, they still seemed to find a uniform combo that was equally difficult to see.
  109. kev-1 October 22, 2011 3:50 pm
    #107 . . . and I definitely didn’t say that unis attract “highly touted players.” Why is it that when someone brings up the uniform issue, as I did today, others automatically assume that we mean that cool uniforms will make teams go undefeated?
  110. funny October 22, 2011 3:52 pm
    Is there an advantage in wearing blue uniforms on a blue field over wearing green uniforms on a green field? There are plenty of teams out there with green team colors.
  111. kev-1 October 22, 2011 3:55 pm
    I have never seen a green uniform the same color as a green turf. If you look at the shade of blue on the uni, it is pretty much the exact shade of blue. If you are watching tv and you have a hard time seeing the players, you don’t think that will also be true in person? Maybe not as much, but definitely a little. And if not at all, it sure messes with your mind enough for people to be talking about it and for a conference to make a rule about it.
  112. tommui October 22, 2011 3:58 pm
    #110 – depends on the shade of green. The blue of BSU is identical to its blue field.
  113. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:12 pm
    So what colors will UH wear tonight?
  114. funny October 22, 2011 4:12 pm
    I’d say that the camera angles, which look down onto the field, exaggerate the perception more than what it would look like on the field. I can see why opposing teams would whine after getting spanked by BSU though.
  115. kev-1 October 22, 2011 4:14 pm
    114 . . . point
  116. kev-1 October 22, 2011 4:15 pm
    #113 – ummm . . . i’m going to take a wild guess and say black?
  117. funny October 22, 2011 4:15 pm
    So no ESPN3 stream tonight?
  118. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:20 pm
    Homecoming so here’s a bit of history:
    1909 – The College of Hawaii “Fighting Deans” played and won its first game against McKinley High School by a score of 95–5 at Punahou School.
    1920 – The College of Hawaii becomes the University of Hawaiʻi and the football team plays its first intercollegiate game against Nevada, losing 14–0 on Christmas Day.
    1922 – Hawaii defeats its first collegiate opponent, beating Pomona 25–6 on Christmas Day.
    1923 – A rainbow appears over Moiliili Field after Hawaii upsets Oregon State, 7–0. Local reporters begin calling UH athletic teams the “Rainbows.”
    1924–25 – The Rainbows, under the guidance of coach Otto Klum, complete back-to-back undefeated seasons. The Rainbows outscore their opponents 606–29 in 18 games. Among the schools defeated during this time are Colorado, Colorado State and Washington State. These Rainbow teams become known as the “Wonder Teams” due to their outstanding play.
    1926 – The Rainbows play their first game at their newly-constructed home field, Honolulu Stadium. The Rainbows fall to the Town Team by a score of 14–7 in front of 12,000 fans on Armistice Day.
    1935 – Rainbow running back and future coach Thomas Kaulukukui becomes Hawaiʻi’s first All-American player. Kaulukukui starred on Hawaiʻi’s 1934 undefeated team and set a school record in 1935 with a 103-yard kick return touchdown during a 19–6 loss to UCLA in Los Angeles. Kaulukukui’s number 32 is later retired by the University and remains the only number to be retired in Hawai’iʻin football history.
    1942 – Following Pearl Harbor and World War II, Hawaiʻi cancels the 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945 football seasons…
  119. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:25 pm
    And then…
    1946 – Hawaiʻi resumes football play after a four-year hiatus as a member of the NCAA…as a College Division “Independent”. The Rainbows continue to play local teams on occasion but the bulk of their schedules are made up of collegiate teams.
    1955 – A year after suffering a 50–0 blowout loss to Nebraska in Honolulu, the Rainbows go up to Lincoln the following season and upset the Huskers 6–0. The win is considered one of the school’s all-time biggest upsets.
    1961 – The UH Board of Athletic Control votes to ABOLISH the football program due to a lack of finances. But one year later
    the program would return to intercollegiate competition behind the urgings of new athletics director Young Suk Ko.
    1965 – Larry Price performed in his third Hula Bowl as a College All-Star after a stint in the U.S. Army where he performed twice for the Hawai’i All-Stars.
    1966 – Hawaiʻi completes its first all-collegiate schedule.
    1968 – Head coach Dave Holmes begins what would be the most successful coaching tenure at Hawaiʻi. From 1968–1974, UH won 67 percent of its games and never suffered a losing season. Holmes still ranks as the all-time leader at Hawaiʻi in winning percentage (.718). Drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 16th round, Larry Cole becomes the first UH Warrior to be drafted by an NFL team. Cole was a one-year transfer from the United States Air Force Academy and later graduated from the University of Houston.
    1971 – Larry Cole becomes the first former Warrior to represent UH in world championship competition in Super Bowl V for the Dallas Cowboys.
    1972 – Larry Cole becomes the first former Warrior to start for a world champion football team with the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI.
    1973 – The Rainbows record what is widely considered to be the biggest upset in school history, defeating Washington 10–7 in front of 52,500 in Seattle. The Huskies were favored to beat Hawaiʻi by as many as 50 points.
    1974 – Hawaiʻi becomes an NCAA Division I member. The team’s new nickname becomes the “Bow’s.” They play their final year at Honolulu Stadium. Larry Price becomes Hawaiʻi’s first Division I head football coach.
  120. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:27 pm
    Thanks for the katooshes, Coach…
    Moving on:
    1975 – 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium becomes the new home of Hawaiʻi football. Hawaiʻi loses its first game in the new stadium, falling to Texas A&I by a score of 43–9 in front of a crowd of 32,247.
    1976 – The NCAA reclassifies its divisions and drops Hawaiʻi to Division I-AA (now FCS). Athletic Director Ray Nagel appeals the decision and the next month the NCAA reinstitutes Hawaiʻi to Division I-A (now FBS) status.
    1979 – Hawaiʻi becomes a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
    Hawaiʻi logo from 1982-19971982 – Dan Audick becomes the first Warrior to have graduated from the university and to have started for a Super Bowl champion. Audick played for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XVI.
    1986 – Defensive end Al Noga becomes the first Hawaiʻi player to be named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press. He also was tabbed as the school’s first Heisman Trophy candidate.
    1989 – Hawaiʻi plays in the program’s first major bowl game — the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl. Hawaii falls to Michigan State, 33–13, before a sellout crowd at Aloha Stadium.
    1990 – The Rainbow rout BYU, 59–28, on December 1. Earlier that day, BYU quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy…Tsigh!
  121. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:30 pm
    Moving on up…
    1992 – Hawaiʻi wins a share of its first-ever WAC championship and posts its first bowl game victory, a 27–17 defeat of Illinois in the Thrifty Car Rental Holiday Bowl. Hawaiʻi would finish the season ranked 20th in the nation and post a team-record 11 victories.
    1996 – Rich Ellerson extends coaching tree for former UH Warriors by being named as Head Football Coach for Southern Utah. In his single season, Ellerson accrued a 4-7 record.
    1998 – Hawaiʻi suffers through the program’s first-ever winless season, going 0–12 under head coach Fred von Appen. Von Appen coached the Rainbow Warriors. to a 5–31 record in his three years at Hawaiʻi. He would be fired after the season.
    1999 – June Jones becomes the new head coach at Hawaiʻi and guides the Rainbow Warriors to the best single-season turnaround in NCAA history, winning nine games and a share of the WAC championship. Hawaii would go on to defeat Oregon State in the Jeep Oʻahu Bowl, 23–17.
    2001 – Hawaiʻi changes its nickname from “Rainbow Warriors” to simply “Warriors.” Wide receiver Ashley Lelie becomes the highest draft pick in program history as the Denver Broncos select him with the 19th pick in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Rich Ellerson extends coaching tree for former UH Warriors by being named as Head Football Coach for Cal Poly. During his eight year tenure, Ellerson led Cal Poly to a 52–38 record.
    2002 – Hawaiʻi is invited to play in the inaugural ConAgra Foods Hawaiʻi Bowl. The Warriors would fall to Tulane, 36–28.
    2003 – Hawaiʻi returns to the Hawaiʻi Bowl and defeats Houston in a wild 54–48 triple-overtime game.
    2004 – Hawaiʻi returns for a third-straight season to the Hawaii Bowl and triumphs over UAB, 59-40. Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang would also become the NCAA’s all-time leader in passing yards with 17,072 over the course of his career, eclipsing the old mark (15,031) set by former BYU quarterback Ty Detmer.
  122. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:33 pm
    And…
    2005 – Hawaiʻi finishes 5–7 and misses out on playing in a bowl game for the first time since 2001, despite a breakout year for quarterback Colt Brennan.
    2006 – Quarterback Colt Brennan sets NCAA single-season records for touchdown passes (58) and passer efficiency rating (252.96), on his way to a sixth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting. The Warriors return to the Hawaiʻi Bowl and defeat Arizona State, 41–24. Hawaiʻi head coach June Jones passes Dick Tomey to become the winningest head coach in school history.
    2007 – Brennan adds to his collection of NCAA records, breaking Detmer’s career records for TD passes and total TDs passing, rushing and receiving. He and wide receiver Davone Bess also tied an NCAA record for most career TDs by a quarterback-receiver combination. The Warriors are unbeaten, with a breakthrough win against Boise State, giving the Warriors their first win ever over the Broncos as a WAC member and their first outright WAC title ever. A 35–28 win over Washington in the season finale on December 1 resulted in them finishing #12 in the BCS rankings and earning a berth in the Sugar Bowl. This is the first regular season Hawaii has ever gone undefeated. Hawaii was also the ONLY undefeated college football team for the season…
  123. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 4:36 pm
    Finally:
    Hawaiʻi then played Georgia on Jan. 1, 2008 in New Orleans, losing 41–10. Ken Niumatalolo extends coaching tree for former UH Warriors by being named as Head Football Coach for Navy.
    2008 – Head coach June Jones resigns shortly after the 2007 season, ending his nine-year coaching run to become the new head coach at Southern Methodist University. On January 15, Greg McMackin, formerly the Defensive Coordinator under June Jones, accepted the position of Head Coach. Rich Ellerson extends coaching tree for former UH Warriors by being named as Head Football Coach for Army.
    2009 – Jim Mills becomes the first UH Warrior to be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame for his play as an offensive tackle in the Canadian Football League.
    2010 – Hawaii wins their 4th WAC Championship by becoming co-champions with Nevada and Boise State.
  183. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 6:18 pm
  184. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 6:18 pm
    We made the PAT! We made the PAT!!!
    I feel like we won the Rose Bowl!
    Woo hoo some sweet revenge!
  193. Matt October 22, 2011 6:27 pm
    XP is good again!!!!!
  194. Hank October 22, 2011 6:27 pm
    just one opinion…the BLOCK by the slot on the wide receiver screen is so important to make it work…Justin Clapp does it the best among all the slots.
  195. Matt October 22, 2011 6:31 pm
    TD NMSU on a trick play.
  196. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 6:32 pm
    Nice fake…
  197. Matt October 22, 2011 6:34 pm
    Sampson returning kicks.
  198. Matt October 22, 2011 6:38 pm
    Bright=stone hands.
  199. Hank October 22, 2011 6:38 pm
    D has to make that catch!
  200. A-joe October 22, 2011 6:38 pm
    Come on Darius! Man up! You can do it!
  201. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 6:39 pm
    That was Bright’s sixth drop of the season.
  202. Hank October 22, 2011 6:39 pm
    …nice block Justin Clapp…
  203. Matt October 22, 2011 6:40 pm
    Great block by Clapp again.
  204. Hawaiianbod October 22, 2011 6:42 pm
    WTH!
  205. Matt October 22, 2011 6:43 pm
    missed FG, but decent protection by the line.
  206. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 6:43 pm
    Well, it wasn’t blocked.
  207. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 6:43 pm
    Special Teams, you doing ok!
  208. A-joe October 22, 2011 6:45 pm
    Downtown!
  209. Matt October 22, 2011 6:46 pm
  210. A-joe October 22, 2011 6:46 pm
    Get tuff D!!
  211. Matt October 22, 2011 6:49 pm
    Nice stop on 4th down big D!!!
  212. A-joe October 22, 2011 6:49 pm
    Das how! Get tuff D!!!
  213. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 6:50 pm
    Nice defense by Art Laurel on Christian, and Liko Satele on Turner.
  214. Matt October 22, 2011 6:50 pm
    Alright offense, your turn.
  215. Matt October 22, 2011 6:53 pm
    or not.
  216. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 6:54 pm
    Still no punt-return yards for Aggies.
  217. Hank October 22, 2011 6:54 pm
    we have got to fight through this…our offense is out-of-sync…
  218. A-joe October 22, 2011 6:54 pm
    NMSU offense moving the ball too well.
  219. kev-1 October 22, 2011 6:55 pm
    Do you guys really think Sampson wears size 6 kids shoes? I find that really hard to believe.
  220. A-joe October 22, 2011 6:55 pm
    Let’s get um D!!!
  221. Hank October 22, 2011 6:57 pm
    …our Defense is keeping us in this game…again.
  222. Matt October 22, 2011 6:57 pm
    Good job defense. Offense needs to get it going.
  223. Matt October 22, 2011 7:01 pm
    Bowling ball Iosefa. We should try him in the wildcat.
  224. Matt October 22, 2011 7:02 pm
    TD!!!!
  225. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:02 pm
    WOW!!!!!
  226. Matt October 22, 2011 7:02 pm
    That’s a hell of a catch by Sampson. XP is good!!!!
  227. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 7:03 pm
    Allan Sampson catch a thing of beauty…
  228. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:04 pm
    Now that’s concentration.
  229. Hank October 22, 2011 7:04 pm
    …that catch was big time…
  230. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:05 pm
    Btw anyone thought they shouldve gone for 2 on that extra point?
    Jus checking on the Afta Da Fackaz…
  231. Lakesidegt October 22, 2011 7:05 pm
    Saw the Alabama v Tennessee game tonight
    In Tuscaloosa with 100,000 other people. Trying to follow the posts as my cousin is driving back to Huntsville.
  232. Hank October 22, 2011 7:08 pm
    we are in a dog fight.
  233. Matt October 22, 2011 7:09 pm
    Nice TD by NMSU. Warriors still have time to answer.
  234. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:09 pm
    That guy is injured, right?
  235. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 7:09 pm
    Aggies have a pretty good pass protection offensive line.
    But they can’t block for the run well against Hawaii.
  236. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:09 pm
    Yup Matt!
  237. Matt October 22, 2011 7:10 pm
    Sampson still returning kickoffs.
  238. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:11 pm
    Mo-balizah!
  239. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:11 pm
    If it means anything, Bright is playing with two sore feet and a sore left knee.
  240. Matt October 22, 2011 7:12 pm
    come on offense. Plenty time left. Two timeouts left.
  241. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:13 pm
    Yikes. Sampson is hurt.
  242. Matt October 22, 2011 7:13 pm
    I just saw Sampson’s shoes on TV. I don’t think he wears a kids size 6.
  243. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 7:13 pm
    If Bright is injured and now Sampson, who should we see?
  244. Hank October 22, 2011 7:14 pm
    TD!
  245. Matt October 22, 2011 7:14 pm
    TD Mo!!!!
  246. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 7:14 pm
    London Sapolu leading the way…designed play?
  247. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:14 pm
    Mo-balizah!!
  248. Hawaiianbod October 22, 2011 7:15 pm
    c’mon man!
  249. Matt October 22, 2011 7:15 pm
    XP off the upright. Bad protection on that one.
  250. Matt October 22, 2011 7:16 pm
    All the Aggie defenders ran away because they didn’t want to get blasted by Sapolu.
  251. Hank October 22, 2011 7:16 pm
    WE need to get more pressure on that QB.
  252. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:17 pm
    Bright’s hands still OK, eh?
  253. Matt October 22, 2011 7:17 pm
    fumble!!!
  254. Hank October 22, 2011 7:17 pm
    Yes!
  255. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:17 pm
    Go for da throat!
  256. Matt October 22, 2011 7:18 pm
    Corey Paredes saw Christian Hollywood it.
  257. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:18 pm
    Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh. Almoss
  258. Matt October 22, 2011 7:22 pm
    Warriors doing okay. 27-14 lead. They also get the ball back after the half. Gotta score and keep up the pressure.
  259. Shoko October 22, 2011 7:24 pm
    Hope Sampson is okay. Sprained ankle?
  260. Hank October 22, 2011 7:24 pm
    Final: Texas Tech 41 (3)Oklahoma 38.
  261. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 7:28 pm
    27-14…so some of us got chance…
    35 – 14 Ipu Man
    38 – 14 wafan
    42 – 14 Pomai
    49 – 14 Tchahng
    64 – 14 WarriorNY
  262. Shoko October 22, 2011 7:30 pm
    Bet Clemson jumps in the top five ranking above Boise State.
  263. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:37 pm
    Deja vu?
    Is this the same halftime show as last year?
  264. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 7:44 pm
    Should have gone for 2 points
  265. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:45 pm
    Last year had Kikaida, eh? Or was that the uddah year?
  266. funny October 22, 2011 7:45 pm
    I always root for BSU to crash the BCS party but I would rank Clemson over Boise based on SOS.
  267. Shoko October 22, 2011 7:46 pm
    Hmm, Lou Holtz doesn’t think Boise State will lose its 5th ranking. Who am I to argue with a man of hist age. 😉
  268. A-joe October 22, 2011 7:47 pm
    IWWTHM- shucks! I put the blame on that miss FG on you! Too slow your recommendation. Hahahahahahahaa
  269. LizKauai (iPhone) October 22, 2011 7:47 pm
    Hadden is
    Booming practice FG’s from the 38.
  270. LizKauai (iPhone) October 22, 2011 7:48 pm
    Almost every play an NMSU helmet comes off.
  271. Matt October 22, 2011 7:49 pm
    Sampson hurt, not good.
  272. Matt October 22, 2011 7:52 pm
    Offense got cold during the extended half.
  273. Matt October 22, 2011 7:53 pm
    Backup QB in for NMSU.
  274. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:54 pm
    Freshman is in
  275. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 7:55 pm
    Freshman sacked.
  276. Shoko October 22, 2011 7:57 pm
    Why is Colwell replacing Christian? Thats a head scratcher.
  277. Buffoman October 22, 2011 7:58 pm
    I guess someof the guys missed tackling class again. Special teams still spooky on xtra points which means field goals could be an adventure. Watching Chun, he takes too much time to kick. He looks like he’s a second slow. Can get away with that in HS but not in college.
  278. Matt October 22, 2011 7:59 pm
    Christian is hurt.
  279. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 7:59 pm
    A-joe,
    That’s ok. We winning. That’s the main thing! Lol
  280. Shoko October 22, 2011 8:01 pm
    Oh, did a Warrior hit the target (left clavicle)?
  281. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:01 pm
    Seems like everyone waiting for someone else to do something. Nobody’s hungry!
  282. Matt October 22, 2011 8:02 pm
    Slow start for the offense this half.
  283. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:04 pm
    The folks who took the points must be feeling pretty safe at the moment. We still look like some of the heads are still in the locker room. Wouldn’t it be just sick if they scored and made the xtra point and no one scored anymore?
  284. Matt October 22, 2011 8:06 pm
    Sack by the elephant, Art Laurel.
  285. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:06 pm
    Munsta Masch!!
  286. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 8:06 pm
    Do we get to see the pass part of this Pass-Punt-Kick competition?
  287. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 8:07 pm
    That’s one fast elephant…
  288. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:08 pm
    ST- hiflyer like know why only get 4 Rainbow Dancers
  289. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:08 pm
    Tunda CLAPP!!!!
  290. Matt October 22, 2011 8:10 pm
    Mo needs to get on track.
  291. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 8:10 pm
    Smart play by Clapp in finding the first down.
  292. Shoko October 22, 2011 8:11 pm
    Keep running the ball and it will be a W!
  293. Matt October 22, 2011 8:12 pm
    NMSU backup QB is hurt. Gotta bring Christian back in hurt.
  294. Matt October 22, 2011 8:14 pm
    Bowling ball Iosefa rolls into the endzone for a TD
  295. Hawaiianbod October 22, 2011 8:15 pm
    ooh emm gee
  296. Matt October 22, 2011 8:15 pm
    and they mishandle the snap. WTH?
  297. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 8:15 pm
    If its not one thing on the PAT its another…….Geez
  298. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:16 pm
    Mighty Joe!
  299. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:17 pm
    Isn’t this a bit insane? How can that be soooo bad? Wow, I mean we can’t count on field goals as a possible scoring opportunity.
  300. Matt October 22, 2011 8:18 pm
    TD NMSU. Missed tackle.
  301. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:18 pm
    Why is Tank out there? He can’t cover and he just got burned again.
  302. Shoko October 22, 2011 8:19 pm
    Why? *sigh*
  303. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:19 pm
    Matt:
    These are the guys that missed tackling class.
  304. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 8:20 pm
    Papajoe, how’d you know?
    42 – 20 papajoe2
  305. Wassup October 22, 2011 8:20 pm
    Looking forward to more excuses from mack (sarcastic). So much for not having another one blocked. Jeez. Mack needs to go. This is really embarassing already.
  306. Matt October 22, 2011 8:20 pm
    Just burned Trevor Davis’ redshirt. Is Pollard hurt?
  307. Hank October 22, 2011 8:21 pm
    TREVOR DAVIS! THANK YOU!
  308. Hank October 22, 2011 8:23 pm
    …we are still fighting for the WAC Championship and a Bowl game…that’s more important than a redshirt year.
  309. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2011 8:23 pm
    Just no offensive rhythm.
  310. Hank October 22, 2011 8:24 pm
    …if Pollard’s hamstring tore…that’s on the coaches for letting him play…
  311. Matt October 22, 2011 8:24 pm
    Nice catch by Ostrowski.
  312. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:24 pm
    WASTED REDSHIRT
  313. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:24 pm
    Jerimiah Weeeeeeeeed!!!!
  314. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:25 pm
    If they thought he could play, they should have played him from the jump. Not make him sit half the year.
  315. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:27 pm
    o-line is just not blocking. Just lucky NMSU is making a ton of ill timed mistakes.
  316. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 8:29 pm
    Weed eh? That could explain some things.
  317. Hank October 22, 2011 8:29 pm
    Our Defense is going to have to win this game for us.
  318. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 8:30 pm
    What the heck? What’s wrong with putting in Joe Avery instead of burning a redshirt???
  319. Wassup October 22, 2011 8:30 pm
    What’s the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a blocked PAT kick? I’m sure we got that one or are really close. Notice how the blocked kicks suck the mojo out of the rest of the team?
  320. Hank October 22, 2011 8:31 pm
    …there’s no doubt that Pollard reinjured his hammy…that really irks me…really.
  321. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:34 pm
    Why is Bright playing? Decoy? Looking at the receiving corp out there, it’s Miah. That’s it. The other guys are just not on the same page. Heck, put Clapp and Harding in.
  322. Matt October 22, 2011 8:35 pm
    Pollard back in. What the heck?
  323. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:35 pm
    Polarizah!
  324. Matt October 22, 2011 8:38 pm
    Nice catch by Trevor Davis.
  325. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:38 pm
    Or Trevor Davis!
  326. Matt October 22, 2011 8:38 pm
    TD!!! Iosefa.
  327. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:39 pm
    Go for 4!
  328. Hank October 22, 2011 8:39 pm
    Great block by Jessie’s son.
  329. Wassup October 22, 2011 8:39 pm
    Go for 2 for the rest of the season.
  330. Hawaiianbod October 22, 2011 8:39 pm
    no can win!
  331. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 8:40 pm
    If Moniz reacted a little faster and he would have made it…
  332. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 8:41 pm
    We should have tried and kicked the PAt
  333. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:42 pm
    So they did not get 2 points. Somehow I felt better with that effort.
  334. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:43 pm
    Why is Hopkins in there???? Missed another tackle on kick off!!
  335. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:43 pm
    Laxidasical play. We need killer instinct!
  336. Hank October 22, 2011 8:43 pm
    …i don’t like the three down “Prevent D”…
  337. Wassup October 22, 2011 8:44 pm
    Dear Mack,
    If you go for 2 for the rest of the season on the conversions, you may be able to make good on your promise not to have another blocked for the remainder.
    Sincerly,
    Da fans
  338. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:44 pm
    Joey Iosefa or Wes Keliikipi? Who you like?
  339. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:45 pm
    OKAY, if Davis was doing that in practice all year, I would have burned his redshirt long time ago.
  340. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:46 pm
    Both kickers hurt? Is that a bad thing? Maybe Niiro will get a shot now. Not saying injury is ever good though.
  341. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:46 pm
    I just mean regarding effectiveness.
  342. Hank October 22, 2011 8:47 pm
    you gotta like a guy with an almost broken arm going all in like that…
  343. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:48 pm
    Hiflyer calling an onside kick.
  344. Hank October 22, 2011 8:49 pm
    our offense will go as far as our Oline will take us.
  345. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 8:51 pm
    59 – 28 d1shima
    59 – 35 Glenn
    59 – 28 Ballpicker
  346. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:52 pm
    Pay close attention. With the exception of Moniz, you are watching the Warrior offense of the future. Here’s our first glimpse.
  347. kev-1 October 22, 2011 8:52 pm
    Hech yeah, props to Christian.
  348. Kekoa October 22, 2011 8:53 pm
    Jackson ran so fast, he outran his shoes!
  349. Matt October 22, 2011 8:53 pm
    TD Mo.
  350. Wassup October 22, 2011 8:53 pm
    Please go for 2.
  351. Hawaiianbod October 22, 2011 8:54 pm
    here we go…….
  352. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 8:55 pm
    Gimme a break…put Joe in already! Give back a little to your seniors, Mack…they’ve certainly given you enough of their blood, sweat and tears!!!
  353. Wassup October 22, 2011 8:55 pm
    Don’t wanna see the PAT unit out there anymore. I rather not convert 2 for the rest of the season than see another missed PAT
  354. A-joe October 22, 2011 8:56 pm
    Joey needs to develop a Keliikipi Stiff Arm
  355. Buffoman October 22, 2011 8:56 pm
    Bright should bulk up and play on the oline. He just does not impress me as a receiver.
  356. funny October 22, 2011 9:02 pm
    If you’re going to pull Mo you should pull Pollard as well
  357. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:04 pm
    come on graves, show us what u got
  358. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:04 pm
    Iosefa had a mean stiff arm tonight.
  359. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 9:05 pm
    Mack you are a man of no integrity…what are you thinking? Just use and abuse without honoring your word!
  360. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:05 pm
    He needs the Keliikipi bowl over and keep going move
  361. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:06 pm
    #359 . . . what happened? What he did?
  362. Matt October 22, 2011 9:07 pm
    Christian = all heart. I’m impressed.
  363. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:10 pm
    NO not Brown!
  364. A-joe October 22, 2011 9:12 pm
    I like NMSU play. They never give up!
  365. BowsForever October 22, 2011 9:13 pm
    Why was Aaron Brown still in the game?
  366. Ipu Man October 22, 2011 9:14 pm
    59 – 35 Glenn
  367. BowsForever October 22, 2011 9:15 pm
    Oh, now I see…
    Seriously, the game shouldn’t be this close.
  368. Buffoman October 22, 2011 9:16 pm
    Someone commented that Miano has our DBs playing well. Really? The NMSU QB is that good or are we that bad? We’re getting burned pretty good tonight.
  369. markazulu October 22, 2011 9:16 pm
    Kev-1: I think he’s upset they used Travis Davis an not played Joe Avery who is a senior while Davis is a freshman an they burned his redshirt!
  370. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:16 pm
    This game has been way too close. What gives?
  371. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:17 pm
    369 . . . thanks. What ever happened to Avery anyway? Thought he was supposed to be a good one too.
  372. Buffoman October 22, 2011 9:18 pm
    Shouldn’t be that close, but we really did not play well again.
  373. chee!!! October 22, 2011 9:21 pm
    New Mexico scoring 34 points? What the…..
  374. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 9:22 pm
    What most most politicians do…say one thing…do another…and the other is always the road of low integrity
  375. Hank October 22, 2011 9:23 pm
    …Just WIN baby…go Warriors!
  376. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 9:24 pm
    Whew! I think that’s the first time I’ve ever squeezed against New Mexico State.
    Dang, we got tons of hurt people. Gotta get some alternative medicine and get these guys ready for the next game.
    3:35am… gotta get up in a couple of hours… or should I just stay up?
  377. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:24 pm
    Looks like Manley is really going to have to earn his job back next year. That dude Christian is tough. Throws a pretty good ball too.
  378. markazulu October 22, 2011 9:25 pm
    Not a impressive game on all phases BUT thing is they won which is important! BUT they NEED TO PLAY BETTER! Hope Aaron Brown is alright. NMST Running Back I tip my hat to him an Christian is one tough son of a gun! Keep playing better an bringing in the wins! But this was a UGLY win but a win nonetheless. Iosefa was a beast AGAIN! Special teams went up from a F to a D or C- but Still not good enough to get a pass! Dunnachie played well though again punting. Anyways Good Win Warriors not great but you did good!
    Go Warriors
  379. madeinhawaii October 22, 2011 9:26 pm
    I wonder if by not playing the red shirts we are getting so many more injuries because our players may be in the game longer than advisable? We won.. but at what cost? Would hate to lose Aaron Brown, now.
  380. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:26 pm
    Wesside . . . if we had better uni’s they would have played better . . . JUST KIDDING, JUST KIDDING.
  381. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:27 pm
    378 . . . are you grading the special teams on a curve? Still F.
  382. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 9:27 pm
    We won!!!
    Now give Mack a $5M a year raise and 10 years!
  383. djmitcho October 22, 2011 9:30 pm
    Ugly as it was, a WIN is a WIN. For all those who question the coaching, go apply for the job when it’s open. You are probably not qualified to even be a high school head coach. That’s why you’re on the blog now instead of being on the sideline. UH won, and now I’m gonna watch the All Blacks kick the crap out of the French in the RWC final.
  384. markazulu October 22, 2011 9:31 pm
    Honestly the 2 plays in the beginning kinda made me feel they didnt deserve a F they played better but not by A LOT we didnt have one blocked he just missed the kick, an the snapper misheld the ball! But The Block punt that was a TD an the Fumble they forced in the beginning an the non blocks actually made me give um a D!
  385. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 9:31 pm
    Interesting point, MIH. Every game is hugely important now. And we’re at home, with more players available to play. We should take advantage of that when we have the chance.
    However, this game was far from over until that last possession. If we have to field the best at each position, we’ve got no choice.
    New Mexico State looks to be finally moving in the right direction. They’ve got a number of good players. Too bad they won’t be at 100% for their next game. I think it was announced that they play Georgia next. Although that’s just an hour up the road, I’m not going to drive up there. Wish them well the rest of the year, though.
  386. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 9:32 pm
    Markazul: Avery is only one of many that he has misled with false promises over the years he took over since the JJ era…sad situation really
  387. markazulu October 22, 2011 9:33 pm
    djmitcho: you are absolutely right! Thats why we are fans! It’s easy to question calls when we dont have our every move judged!
    JUST KEEP WINNING BOYS!
  388. RedZone October 22, 2011 9:35 pm
    Way to go Warriors.
    I like Davis. He gives us someone who can stretch it down the sidelines. Good to have a Sapolu in the middle. I also thought Lefiti did a nice job too. Iosefa just keeps getting better and better. Add Jackson and we are good at running back but we are running out of receivers.
    I hope Aaron’s okay.
    I liked that play where they ran Sampson. He may have gotten hurt on that one but the play is there. We need to use it more. And as I have been saying in the past. Got to run Mo. Da mo da betta.
  389. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2011 9:37 pm
    We need to find that groove quicker after the half too. Move them chains and stop going for those long bombs. Nice catch by Davis, though.
    Going to close my eyes for a bit. I hate being dizzy from lack of sleep the next day. G’night all.
    Pleasant Warrior dreams.
  390. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 9:37 pm
    I could write a book on what goes down behind the facade…hmmm maybe call it “the under belly of collage football” LOL
  391. markazulu October 22, 2011 9:38 pm
    Warriorfan4ever: Honestly I thought He would’ve been a starter I think i remember him in the Cincinanti game from 08!
  392. kev-1 October 22, 2011 9:41 pm
    ok markazulu . . . a D
  393. WarriorNY October 22, 2011 9:42 pm
    Ok… Why did we waste redshirt year for Trevor Davis??? Did we really not have anyone else that could fill in that spot?
  394. d1shima October 22, 2011 9:45 pm
    Whew!
  395. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 9:48 pm
    Don’t get me going on starters!!! I think I have vented enough for one sitting…”it’s all BS”
    (another book title in the making)
  396. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 9:49 pm
    Anyone listening to Mack on the radio now?
    Precious.
  397. BowsForever October 22, 2011 9:50 pm
    Coach is striking me as unnecessarily defensive about special teams on the post-game show.
  398. markazulu October 22, 2011 9:51 pm
    MAC just said it all THIS TEAM LACKS Consistent On ALL PHASES! Some games were shuting down people I mean we could hold Colorado to 17 yet New Mexico & UNLV can score 34-40 respectively on us! An every game has a point were our offense looks SO OFF it looks like they’re just going through practice! Special Teams is mind boggling! But I LIKE THE FACT HE TOOK ALL THE BLAME! Good Job Coach but seriously when you play sloppy an when you lose people talk! But Stay positive coach! I still believe in you BUT Please get the boys comin out every game on fire because most of the time they come out flat either in the 1st half or 2nd half or both!
    Go Warriors!
  399. funny October 22, 2011 9:52 pm
    Not the end of the world but not a good decision to burn Davis’ redshirt year which falls on Mack’s shoulders. Also, four XPs left off the board tonight due to the lack of reliability of the XP team which also ultimately is Mack’s responsibility.
    Is Mack really the coach to lead this team into a new conference and take a step up in competition?
  400. BowsForever October 22, 2011 9:53 pm
    OK, _now_ Coach Mack is sounding downright defiant.
  401. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 9:54 pm
    People asking to just go for 2 will get their wish granted.
    Apparently that’s a remedy that Mack said on the radio just now. Maybe he was saying it with jest, maybe not.
  402. djmitcho October 22, 2011 9:55 pm
    warriorfan4ever: tell me how he was misled. Players know they are not promised a spot on the field. You need to earn your spot. Unless you are present at every practice and meeting, how do you know Davis isn’t better than Avery. When you go to play football at Hawaii, you know there is a lot of competition for playing time at receiver. Due to injuries, we’ve seen more rotation at the receiver spot than we have in the past. And as far as burning Davis’ redshirt, while it may not have been ideal, it happened. If he gives UH a better chance to win, so be it. Most players would be willing to burn redshirts if it meant helping the team win. They’re are still 6 more regular season games and hopefully a bowl game to play this season and I’m sure we will see more of Davis in the line-up, especially if Pollard’s hammy injury lingers, and they usually do.
  403. WarriorNY October 22, 2011 9:56 pm
    Also, can you guys who’ve seen Graves at practice comment about his accuracy? I was looking at his high school numbers and they are unreal. Looks like we’re going to be competitive for our move over to the MWC with the talent we are returning.
    And WTF is up with our Pass Defense? We have the best talent in the secondary that we’ve had in years. And our pass rush is great. How are we not better than we are???
  404. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2011 9:58 pm
    Main thing is that we won. Gotta be happy for that. Keep it up Warriors!
  405. djmitcho October 22, 2011 9:58 pm
    Warriorfan4ever: let me know when you write those books…I’m sure they’ll be best sellers
  406. wafan October 22, 2011 9:59 pm
    Bravo, Warriors!
    Whoo-hoo!!!
  407. wafan October 22, 2011 10:00 pm
    Some folks are never satisfied.
  408. Da Punchbowl Kid October 22, 2011 10:00 pm
    Not pretty at times, but its nice to get a “W”! Gratz to the team!
    GO WARRIORS!!!
  409. funny October 22, 2011 10:01 pm
    Pollard should have been pulled earlier and should not have been out there when Graves came in. He’s a gamer but Mack should care more for his health. But then again, I question Mack’s ability to think during games anyway.
  410. wafan October 22, 2011 10:01 pm
    ‘Attaway, Mack!
    No blocked ST kicks! Just an unreal display of kicking accuracy. Impressive to hit the upright. HA!
    Is that the third time this year?
    Whoo-hoo!!!
  411. d1shima October 22, 2011 10:23 pm
    Tip o’ the hat to NaMaSU QB Christian.
    Braddah came outta the locker room with a sling on his left arm and went back in after the Frosh QB hurt his leg. Then he runs in for a TD! And tries to run in the PAT…Tough Mother.
  412. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 10:31 pm
    402: I agree with you and I’m not specifically referring to the Avery/Davis situation. But let me just say that I have been to EVERY practice during one of Macks so-called starter competions…and I saw firsthand the BS of his promises and how he changed the rules of the competition whenever needed to preserve the spot for his personal favorites whether they actually earned it legit ably or not…and I was not the only one watching this
  413. Warriorfan4ever October 22, 2011 10:33 pm
    Djmitcho: I think u r right!!!
  414. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 10:39 pm
    ST may have a point about being in the locker a long time after warmups. Cause of some of the injuries? I didn’t want to say it because I really love the way he plays, but Paredes seems to be less than 100%. He got burned over the middle in the SJS game and just doesn’t seem as fast as last year in this game too. While chasing the NMSU player that scored, it looked like he was running with a limp. I really liked him last year because of his speed in running down players and his ability to be around almost every defensive play. I hope he gains 100% of his physical abilites.
  415. papajoe2 October 22, 2011 10:41 pm
    Ugly? Maybe. But we still got the win.
  416. SAWARRIOR October 22, 2011 10:43 pm
    WHOA! #107, your dead wrong!!!! WOW!!!
  417. kev-1 October 22, 2011 10:47 pm
    I’m worried about the injuries too. Not so much on the offense, because no one has really impressed. But on the defense. If we lose Brown . . . not good. And papajoe is right, Paredes is no where near 100%. I can’t imagine him making it through many more games as hurt as he is.
  418. Da Punchbowl Kid October 22, 2011 10:48 pm
    I’m gonna savor the win, there were many bright spots and the guys kept fighting.
    NMSU has a better team than usual, lots of fight in them. Happy to see our Warriors respond.
    Lets just take it one game at a time, and the Warriors won this one. On to Idaho!
    GO WARRIORS!!!
  419. SAWARRIOR October 22, 2011 10:49 pm
    WOW!!!! do u really think a Rainbow will out recruit a Warrior?! REALLY? we’re talking about 17 year olds!!! I guess you think you know know more about merchandising and recruiting than what the studies suggest. LMAO
    Studies have been done on this subject, but i guess you think you know better. WOW! get off the island and open your mind brah!
  420. SAWARRIOR October 22, 2011 10:51 pm
    sorry that was for #107^^^
  421. ballpicker October 22, 2011 10:56 pm
    Ipu man # 345,
    I think Glenn gets the nod between the TWO 59-28 scores. But it always nice to get mentioned.
    Not sure if there were better scores but we wait for the official decision form Pomai.
  422. ballpicker October 22, 2011 10:58 pm
    The Warriors had to battle tonight against a greatly improved New Mexico State team. Thank goodness Manley didnt play!!!
    But a good win nevertheless.
    Got to do it again next week or it means nothing.
  423. Tyson F. October 22, 2011 11:00 pm
    Hello… nice reading here, im lad i fond tis post and will be returning o your site.
  424. Bulla October 22, 2011 11:05 pm
    #397
    I was listening also, he was downright upset….wow, best defense is a strong offense….. time for change, the wind is blowing…..
  425. WarriorNY October 22, 2011 11:12 pm
    @412
    What do you mean by that? Are you saying guys are playing because of favoritism? I mean I don’t like wasting a solid redshirt year for Davis but you can’t be serious that the coaching staff would rather play who they like rather than who would win football games…
  426. ballpicker October 22, 2011 11:16 pm
    After a review of the listed scores it appears that under the current rules set down by Pomai, Sean should be declared the winner as his score was Hawaii 45 NMSU 21. A 13 point difference as opposed to 59-48 which is a 20 point difference. I think….
  427. ballpicker October 22, 2011 11:18 pm
    Bulla,
    Good evening and late night to you sir. Hope all is well with the family. Just got home from work so just catching up with all the happenings.
  428. Derek October 22, 2011 11:21 pm
    From what I saw Trevor Davis has the most upside. He ran away from the cornerback on a long pass and he made a great grap. I said to me, “WOW” did you see that! He is going to be big time.
  429. Cozzone October 22, 2011 11:38 pm
    Same thing eh? Just the other way around.
  435. 99club October 23, 2011 3:58 am
    Three more wins for the bowl invite…hopefully that’ll be in Nevada.
    The Warriors didn’t have 6 turnovers last night and we won. I see a pattern here.
    Pomai:
    Warriors: 41 Idaho: 21
  436. 99club October 23, 2011 4:12 am
    The story of the week has to be the one where 10 Arizona and UCLA players were suspended for a fight that broke out after a streaker ran on the field. I’d love to have heard the players’ “jawing,” as the reports noted, that caused the fight.
  437. Wes'side Warrior October 23, 2011 4:33 am
    Morning, everyone. Out the door in a few minutes.
    Before I forget, I gotta say, I hope we revisit the issue of body bag games. We won’t know the true direction of our program unless we take on some of these payday games. We all know the struggles New Mexico State has been experiencing. They go to Minnesota, and surprise them with a win. After hosting Nevada next week, they take a trip up the road from me to face Georgia. I hope they are healed up enough to make a game of it, or even possibly win it. But, bottom line, they are bringing some much needed funds to their athletic department. Hopefully, they’ll be overlooked, as their game is sandwiched between Florida and Auburn.
    Sending out healing prayers to all those who are aching.
    Lori Santi reported that Stutzman was throwing up on the sideline. Is he okay? We’ll need to go position by position to figure out who is healthy enough to play, and give some time to heal for those who need extra time. As Coach said in the post game, lots of guys are banged up. We’ve got lots of receivers, but it seems most are suffering an injury of some sort. Each game on the schedule is huge. Can’t afford another conference loss.
  438. wafan October 23, 2011 4:56 am
    Good morning, Tsai-kos and Tsai-kettes!
  439. wafan October 23, 2011 5:01 am
  442. CoolEthan October 23, 2011 5:58 am
    Just watched the game on ESPN3 replay.
    Awesome.
    Totally Awesome.
    NMSU is a good team with two quality leaders QB and RB on the offense.
    Only 2 penalties for 10 yds on the Warriors.
    What the hell are you peepz bitch’n about?
    This was a WIN!
    Moniz and Iosefa steam rolling in Nasti style!
    What the hell are you peepz bitch’n about?
  443. CoolEthan October 23, 2011 6:00 am
    Did I say this was a WIN?
    This was not the Hal Mumme era team.
  446. d1shima October 23, 2011 6:40 am
    Great Morning All!
  447. Shoko October 23, 2011 6:47 am
    Morning folks!
    A win is a win, so nice job to the Warriors.
    Coaches Poll came out and Oklahoma’s loss to TT seemed to have dropped them from the one spot to number 9.
  448. Shoko October 23, 2011 6:53 am
    Only eight teams are undefeated. Wonder if Houston continues to play well and ends up in a BCS Bowl, the Big East will start to salivate
    Agree w/ coolethan – callate la boca/ shut the mouth(we speak mostly Spanish here in GA).
    Warriors & coaches, congratulations on areas of improvement, playing clean w/ only 10 yds of penalties, & getting the W. Still too much flat play. What keeps dimming the fire? Here’s some things for all to be thankful for, but it does’nt mean everyone go shave “swag” on their heads. Play humble & good & great things will come. CONGRATULATIONS again & God speed in healing the injuries!
    1. Iosefa plays w/ increasing consistency & confidence, not to mention HUMILITY.
    2. D still getting the sacks!
    3. Sampson got speed & guts – God speed in healing up for next game.
    4. Justin Clapp – dependable.
    5. Trevor Davis – we found a diamond. A woefully needed big play threat to match Pollard. Use both on some plays.
    6. John Hardy Tuliau finally gets unleashed on a punt & helps get us 6.
    7. ST got some point after attempts.
    8. O line gave Mo some time.
    9. Mo can run. Use more of those plays & frustrate the kukai out of opponents.
    10. Parades is a bull. Sacrifice & determination.
    11. W/ Aron Brown on the field opponents should be terrified when Paredes is healthy.
    Last year, one of our secretaries insisted we had to have baked potatoes for a Friday lunch the week the Vandals visited the Warriors.
    I agreed saying something it would be appropriate because Idaho was going to feel the heat in Hawai’i.
    She did not think it was very funny. Found out later that day she is a Vandal.
    Oops.
    Special Teams
    The kicking game was good with the little guy, Kenton but he was taken out. What happened?
    The other kicker, Tyler missed a FG and hit the upright on a PAT. Coaches should have let the little local kid kick, he was doing well.
    Leave well enough alone and let Kenton do PAT and FG. Tyler is a freshman, just let him do kickoffs until next year
    warriorNY 425: that’s precisely what I’m saying…it’s gone on for too long (and I’m only talking about the Mack era). He will do anything to support his choices…and yes that includes NOT putting in players who can win games. It seems that is his preferred mode of operandus. He goes down with the ship rather than doing the right thing…I look forward to Davis, he looks promising for sure. My beef is not about him whatsoever. It’s about blatant dishonesty and saying one thing…promising one thing…then not upholding those promises and doing another. This is about a lack of integrity and abusing fine young athletes who give every ounce of their beings for the team. This is about doing the right thing…or as in the case of this program…not!!!
  469. d1shima October 23, 2011 7:56 am
    Admit that I had to gugu: bumbershoot 😉
    DPK,
    Under-sized and over-matched but terrific attitude and work ethic led to another sack and a TFL yesterday! 🙂
    The team will be favored to wrap up the last two wins in conference after a non-conference trip to Menlo this week.
    If they get past all that then it’s just a wait to see how the insanely East-coast biased playoff seeding comes out. 👿
    While on a trip to our grocery store before the game I was listening to ESPN radio. They were blasting Boise State for not blowing away Air Force. They said that because the game was close, BSU would drop in the polls. I thought Air Force was a quality football team? Aren’t they a team that gives a lot of bigger schools problems? Anyway BSU wins by 11. A while later both Oklahoma and Wisconsin lose. I wonder what kind of excuses that they are giving now. No, I am NOT a BSU lover, but I do cheer for the mid schools to succeed. These BCS announcers (ESPN) are just arrogant and knock the mid schools so that they don’t have to share the pie.
    Good Morning Fellow Warrior Fans! Be Proud our boys fought hard, played hard, an gave it their all. Sure fans should feel upset a bit because our Warriors DID play Sloppy But the most important thing they got the Win! An their were bright spots with Iosefa, some spurts with Jackson, Mo was a little off but like always he got his groove back, Our D-line is physical, Art Laurel is Amazing, An WE DIDNT GET A KICK BLOCKED! But we did miss a PAT! & we had a bobbled snap. No excuses but Injuries are hurting us Both our kickers are hurt? Here’s a Funny thought why dont we see if Mo could kick PAT’s I think I remember him kicking some PAT at Leilehua in his JV year! Parades, Brown, Pollard an other players! But how about that blocked Punt! Most people are gonna complain because of “THE SPREAD” But honestly unless you gamble “The Spread” shouldnt be THAT important!
    ANYWAYS Glad they got the win an come on guys 2 PENALTIES were is the PRAISE!
    Isn’t it ironic how I posted a few days ago when ST put pictures up of the kickers? It might have been the next day or two days later that an article came out in the SA about the Punahou kicker saying almost the same thing that I posted? Kicking coach for hire. lol. Actually, I’m just joking about the hire, but if the Warriors need help…… Being retired, I just don’t like to drive out to UH from Mililani in the heavy morning traffic and try to find parking at UH on a school day. My advice for kickers is to keep it simple. Don’t think too much and stick to basics.
    Kevin-Prince Boateng scored a hat-trick within 18 minutes of coming on as a half-time substitute as AC Milan recovered from being 3-0 behind to win 4-3 at Lecce in an astonishing Serie A match on Sunday.
    Mario Yepes’s 82nd-minute header completed the fightback for the defending champions who trailed to goals from Uruguayans Guillermo Giacomazzi and Carlos Grossmuller and a Massimo Oddo penalty after a shambolic first-half display.
    Argentine Erik Lamela, 19, scored seven minutes into his Serie A debut in AS Roma’s 1-0 win over Palermo.
    Inter Milan won for the only the second time in seven Serie A outings this season when a Thiago Motta header gave them a far from convincing 1-0 win over Chievo.
    Udinese, unbeaten after seven games, lead with 15 points while Lazio are second, one point behind, after a 2-0 win at Bologna in the late match thanks to an own goal from Robert Acquafresca and a Senad Lulic strike.
    Juventus, also unbeaten after being held 2-2 by Genoa on Saturday, dropped to third with 13 and Cagliari are fourth with 12 after a goalless draw at home to Napoli.
    Napoli, Roma and Milan are level on 11 points.
    TOO SLOW
    “I’m happy because Milan are finally where we deserve to be,” Boateng, whose side started the weekend a modest 13th, told Sky Sport Italia.
    “This isn’t a reply to my critics because I look to the future and not to the past.”
    Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri added: “A comeback win like this is very important. We got ourselves into a bit of a mess and we did little in the first half, we were too slow, although I had faith we could fight back. I’m happy for Boateng.”
    Giacomazzi headed Lecce in front after four minutes and former Milan defender Oddo converted a harshly-awarded penalty on the half hour following a foul by Christian Abbiati on Daniele Corvia.
    On a bumpy pitch, a mistake by Mark van Bommel set up another Lecce counter-attack seven minutes later which Grossmuller finished off by slotting the ball past Abbiati.
    The game changed completely when the ineffective Robinho was replaced by the heavily-tattooed Boateng at half-time.
    The Ghana international fired in from close range within four minutes and scored with an exquisite first-time strike from 25 metres following Antonio Cassano’s pass six minutes later.
    He levelled with an opportunist goal in the 63rd minute when a rebound from Ignazio Abate’s shot landed at his feet, although Yepes was clearly offside at time.
    Antonio Nocerino hit the bar and Zlatan Ibrahimovic just failed to turn in a Cassano pass for Milan before Cassano’s delicate cross was headed in by Yepes with eight minutes left.
    Inter dominated the first half against Chievo at the San Siro with midfielder Wesley Sneijder looking his old self and went ahead when Thiago Motta rose above the defence to score with a powerful header in the 34th minute.
    Maicon hit the post for Inter in the second half but they were never entirely comfortable and Bostjan Cesar nearly equalised with a header which Julio Cesar grabbed just under the crossbar.
    Claudio Ranieri’s side have seven points in 16th.
