Game day: New Mexico

Albuquerque — The forecast called for thunderstorms today, but we’re consulting with a better source. Head athletic trainer Eric Okasaki said the weather will not be a problem. (Hint UH fans: If there’s a major injury, it’s Okasaki attending to the player.)

Max Wittek was in street clothes during warmups and is not expected to play today.

No official word, but the expectation is the starting ball-handling guys will be running back Paul Harris, slotback Dylan Collie, tight end Dakota Torres, and wideouts Isaiah Bernard and Devan Stubblefield.

As always on game day, it began with the meet-greet walk:

Defensive tackle Ka‘au Gifford, strength/conditioning coach Gary Beemer, defensive line coach Lance Samuseva and cornerback Ne'Quan Phillips.

  6. kev-1 October 17, 2015 9:27 am

Chow’s comments about running the ball are all telling about what everyone has been moaning and groaning about. In his mind, the offense has been too spread out and they need to get back to running the ball. Oh dear. Get ready for more Chowball.

Sorry, but I just have a hard time tolerating him already. I know. It’s game day. Stay positive.

My support is behind the players. That’s all that keeps me watching.

Memphis upsets #13 ranked Ole Miss 37-24. Another mid-major (6-0) is making a move on the national scene. Plans are in the works for new football facilities and a new stadium for the Tigers.

As long as the offense finds something that’s more effective. But if it’s not working please don’t keep trying over and over expecting different results. i hope to see them trying to get wittek in a rhythm with short, quick passes especially since he is a little banged up and New Mexico likes to blitZ.

#6 K-1……I had the same reaction to coach Chow’s comments…..we’ve been trying to run the ball for 3 1/2 years and haven’t been able to do it…..I don’t know if I will survive watching the game if that’s the way we go…..I hope coach Chow is just trying to deceive NM……or maybe he is just being charitable and making sure NM can have a nice homecoming…..what with ours being so lousy last week.

  43. cheepono October 17, 2015 1:57 pm

how is it not news worthy that our starting d end straight up quit the team?? can we get any type of investigative reporting or does chow have a muzzle on all media reporters?

  44. z October 17, 2015 1:58 pm

    Stupid.

  45. WarriorNY October 17, 2015 1:59 pm

    Who quit the team?

  46. Markazulu October 17, 2015 2:00 pm

I’m assuming he means Luke Shawley

  47. Buffoman October 17, 2015 2:01 pm

Wow, such brainless play! That’s why winning remains elusive.

  48. Markazulu October 17, 2015 2:08 pm

    Woolsey playing really well.

  49. z October 17, 2015 2:08 pm

    Woolsey came to play.

  50. rundown808 October 17, 2015 2:10 pm

One thing I’ve learned about living down south. They are true and loyal to their roots. That means if you from Alabama. There’s only two teams that matter. Alamaba vs Auburn. Good kid with good country roots. Probably like most kids, parents don’t have the time or money to travel to see their kids play. Nice awesome to see her come an support her son and UH. But she letting yall know. Bama for life. Lol.
The rivalry is true and meet anyone from there. They will let you know what’s up. Met two ladies BFF their who life. But when is comes to Bama vs Auburn. They are on seperate grounds. Too funny. Good Luck and bring home a W.

  51. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 2:11 pm

YEA… BUT WE DOING IT TO FAST…THE D-FENCE NEEDS MORE

4 out of 5 drives lead to points. I love it 😉

  59. WarriorNY October 17, 2015 2:34 pm

Great first half for the offense…!

  60. Shoko October 17, 2015 2:47 pm

Someone mentioned that Shawley had personal problems that he was dealing and the reason he was not on the traveling roster. Hope its not too serious.

  61. z October 17, 2015 2:48 pm

That play by Kennedy near the goal line gotta be on the highlight reel.

  62. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 3:10 pm

  77. Come on, Man! October 17, 2015 4:22 pm

If norm chow finds a way to lose this game, he should call a public press conference and commit seppuku on the spot.

  78. Locomoco October 17, 2015 4:22 pm

How do we not have a pick since game 1?

  79. Inyoface October 17, 2015 4:23 pm

    Here we go again…

  80. Locomoco October 17, 2015 4:24 pm

Classic Chowball. Play not to lose, then …

  81. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:26 pm

    Touchdown Lobos! Ciao Chow!

  83. WarriorNY October 17, 2015 4:28 pm

    WTF?

  84. Ala Wai October 17, 2015 4:29 pm

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

  85. MattO October 17, 2015 4:30 pm

if we lose this game, it’s not because sanchez missed, it’s because the coaching staff called plays in the red zone and tried not to lose, instead of calling plays to win.

  86. Shoko October 17, 2015 4:33 pm

Yep. I’m done. Good luck to the Warriors rest of the season.

  87. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:34 pm

    :(:(:(

  88. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:35 pm

Well, Michigan had the game won, too…

  89. MattO October 17, 2015 4:37 pm

    we’ve imploded.

    no poise.

    no clock management.

coaches, i blame this one squarely on you guys.

    this was disgraceful.

and the kids deserve better than this.

  90. oneseason October 17, 2015 4:38 pm

Great game Rainbow Warriors. You deserve much better than Norm Snatching Chow from the jaws of victory?

  91. WarriorNY October 17, 2015 4:39 pm

Did we leave the field with 3 Time Outs? How in the world does that happen?

    Aye…

  92. z October 17, 2015 4:39 pm

Warriors had the game. Coach lost it.

  93. Andrew October 17, 2015 4:40 pm

I was probably one of the biggest supporters of Chow over the years thinking they would finally have their year this season, but at this point it’s time to move on. considering how long it takes the university to hire a new coach; they might as well name one of the coordinators as interim and start thinking of candidates for a new coach.

  94. PONO October 17, 2015 4:41 pm

Hopefully this is the straw that broke Chow’s back. I’m done being a fan until they get a new coach. Can’t stand what he’s doing to this team.

  95. Turkey October 17, 2015 4:41 pm

Chow is done after that pathetic showing. Can’t stand Robert Kekaula it felt like he was jinxing every drive.

  96. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 4:41 pm

We just gave another one away….3 runs n not try to score n play safe for the field goal…this is what they get for all their hard work… shame shame chow…

  97. Inyoface October 17, 2015 4:41 pm

Play not to lose? He plays to lose!

  98. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:41 pm

    28 New Mexico – 27 Hawaii
Not too bad if you did not know the last few minutes…

  99. Andrew October 17, 2015 4:42 pm

Don’t know how many times the past few years it was said at the end of the game that they lost it because they played not to lose rather than playing to win. I thought that was coach Mack’s downfall at times during his time as well.

  100. Hank October 17, 2015 4:42 pm

    This is a long nightmare.

  101. kev-1 October 17, 2015 4:43 pm

Like you guys weren’t expecting that? Come on. Sad.

  102. z October 17, 2015 4:43 pm

    Pau with Chow.

  103. Hank October 17, 2015 4:43 pm

On third down, why didn’t we set up the 22-yard field goal with a better angle? We done it before ….

  104. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 4:44 pm

    MATTO…. 100 % TRUE…

  105. Come on, Man! October 17, 2015 4:44 pm

“Well, Michigan had the game won, too…”

yeah, but michigan is actually a GOOD football team with an amazing coach. UH is… well.. it could’ve been worse. the bus could’ve crashed before they got to the stadium. so, overall, a win for the warriors!

  106. MattO October 17, 2015 4:44 pm

Sanchez, not sure if you ever look here, keep your head up – everyone has a bad day. You shouldn’t have even been put in that position in the first place. Or at the very least, your snap should have been squared up and centered.

You’re an incredible kicker. Onwards and upwards, dude. Better days await.

  107. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:45 pm

Hope the power went out in the Philipines before the end of the game…

  108. Inyoface October 17, 2015 4:45 pm

I’m not surprised they scored a td on the last drive. Just always seems meant to be with Chows luck.

  109. Bigwave96744 October 17, 2015 4:45 pm

Chow is a goner. No doubt..

  110. Makai October 17, 2015 4:45 pm

I feel like we got juiced on the leaping penalty on the field goal. At the same time we took the foot off the pedal and played chow ball on the final drive. This one stings we had a road victory in our grasps.

  111. kev-1 October 17, 2015 4:46 pm

#99 … not too bad? You’re kidding I hope. Giving up the win at the end is worse than getting blown out!

  112. WarriorNY October 17, 2015 4:46 pm

That was disheartening… We have to go 5-1 to get to a bowl… Yikes I thought for sure we’d make a bowl this year…

  113. kev-1 October 17, 2015 4:46 pm

    It’s not on Sanchez.

  114. Hank October 17, 2015 4:47 pm

Losers lose…and are good at it.

  115. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 4:47 pm

iF HE PLAYS TO LOSE… WHY NOT JUST SET UP AT THE CENTER OF THE FIELD.. N GIVE HIS KICKER A BETTER SHOT ?

  116. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 4:48 pm

Can’t wait till he is home n listen to the excuses…

  117. Fei Jai October 17, 2015 4:49 pm

    @79. Agree.

  118. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:49 pm

What is the opposite of Land of Enchantment?

  119. MattO October 17, 2015 4:49 pm

Kev-1 – agreed, definitely not on him.

  120. WarriorNY October 17, 2015 4:50 pm

Alright…. I have to get a drink and finish watching the Mets… Lets Go Mets!

    Goodnight folks…

  121. MattO October 17, 2015 4:50 pm

    Ipu – Land of Disenchantment?

  122. oneseason October 17, 2015 4:50 pm

It just won’t get better until Chow is gone.

  123. Turkey October 17, 2015 4:50 pm

Not on Sanchez but he had one job… I wanna see a coach come in and utilize our talent.

  124. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:51 pm

Next up, the Wolfpack of Reno Nevada…

  125. lawaia October 17, 2015 4:53 pm

  126. Darren October 17, 2015 4:55 pm

I never got the impression that Bailey was this conservative last year…

  127. Darren October 17, 2015 4:56 pm

Rigo has been MVP to this point…need to keep your head up young man…

  128. Come on, Man! October 17, 2015 4:56 pm

we’ll probably hear more stuff like “well. when we play teams at our level, it’ll be different. we’ve played boise, ohio state, wisconsin, blah blah. the only thing that matters is the conference.”

but if new mexico isn’t at our level, then who is? OIA red division? definiely not ILH, they might be too good.

  129. keleguenbinadu October 17, 2015 4:57 pm

Wooo! We didn’t get shut out on the road!

  130. cappie the dog October 17, 2015 4:58 pm

Rigoberto, you’re the reason why Hawaii was in position to win.

I can’t recall the last time a kicker booted two 45+ yarders in the same game.

You’re probably the third best player on the team.

  131. Ipu Man October 17, 2015 4:58 pm

At least there was a big fat juicy rainbow over Manoa…
real pretty. Come home, Bows, Warriors, rest up…
cheer up… Eat some Malasadas, shave ice, fried noodles.
    And look up…

  132. Darren October 17, 2015 4:59 pm

I’m ready for the switch to the “go for the jugular” mentality of play calling. Uhhhh…nothing left to lose

  133. H-Man October 17, 2015 5:05 pm

The Missed chip-shot field goal is not the reason the Warriors lost. Rigo made two previous field goals of 49 abd 47-yards. This was a typical Norm Chow loss. Went conservative too soon.

  134. kimo browner October 17, 2015 5:10 pm

Maybe the same UH lawyer who authored the Arnold contract gave Norm Chow the same generous termination clause and Matlin has to wait another year. OMG. What a mess.

  135. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 5:15 pm

Have to give credit where it is long over due…Ikaika played a great game..did all he was told to do…he should start rest of the season…

    For me…is a great win 4 the team…rotten loss for the Coach…
For those of us watching…we know what was coming down second half….we just did not want to admit…I am fairly sure the Lobo staff knew also…n yet sum running plays were very successful…but long term…team got ‘sold out’ by predictability again…hope they have a safe flight home… n heal… they should get 2 days rest…

  136. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2015 5:18 pm

Stop buying the lies that Bailey has total control of this offense. The 2nd half of this game had Chow’s signature written all over it. Mr. Play Not To Lose.

What happened to using a jet sweep with Ewaliko or wildcat on the last play? We don’t have to throw the ball but that doesn’t mean we can’t get creative with a run.

Why is has this program become so afraid of making touchdowns?

  137. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 5:18 pm

BETTER WATCH ST. LOUIS N PUNAHOU… THAT ONE IS NO ‘CONSERVATIVE’
    PLAY…

bombs away… from start to finish…

  138. Come on, Man! October 17, 2015 5:32 pm

woolsey’s stat line, though. unimpressive to say the least.

  139. Warrior fan October 17, 2015 5:35 pm

Well this should be it for Norm Chow. He needs to go.

  140. Trunks420 October 17, 2015 5:37 pm

Didn’t watch it but the score looked like a close exciting game.

So I came here to congratulate the Team but then I read the comments and it sounds horrible…I’m confused?

I liked that Woosley started and should start rest of season.

I like chow and his scheme but I need to know why the hate explain why chow should be blamed for a close game

  141. z October 17, 2015 5:37 pm

How many times have we lost to opponents backup quarterback?

  142. seewhy October 17, 2015 5:42 pm

    RE: z #141

Too many times… BS, Utah St last year, almost UNLV last year. What’s new?

  143. oneseason October 17, 2015 5:43 pm

Chow deserves the dubious credit of inventing the prevent offense.

  144. moocher October 17, 2015 5:44 pm

Conservative plays I can understand…running time off the clock to go IP 8pts and forcing NM to use time outs. Moderate coaching strategy of playing not to lose. Worse case scenario NM scores and goes for 2 then overtime. But coach, you are giving the other team a chance no matter how slim in your play not lose philosophy.

Bad coaching….not putting thee king cker in the center if the field.
Bad coaching…letting NM go the length of the field to score. The only consistent thing during the time of scarce wins is chow himself. I would gave to say its time. When you shuffle things around and can’t get better results, its time to look in the mirror.
    Bad coaching….linemen undisciplined jumping offsides.

In a nutshell this game was lost due to bad coaching.

So many coaches have come through Hawaii in Chows time and wins are still scarce.

  145. oneseason October 17, 2015 5:46 pm

First half stats for Woolsey were good as I recall. Did poor play calling make his job harder? My guess is yes.

  146. seewhy October 17, 2015 5:48 pm

Rigo, please keep your head up. You kept UH in the entire game! Keep your head up.

  147. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2015 5:51 pm

    Trunks420,

For one, he could have been more creative in attempting to score a TD on the last place before the blocked FG. Another, the 2nd half we came out flat again because of the same old Chow offense. Ball control, run the clock out, play not to win. It hasn’t been working for 3.5 years but by god who cares right?

Try a jet sweep or use Ewaliko in a wildcat play in that 2nd to the last series. There are plays where we can secure the ball and not throw it, yet give us a chance to get one up on the defense and find the endzone.

FG are nice. TD are nicer.

  148. Markazulu October 17, 2015 5:51 pm

Credit to Woolsey, Lakalaka, Harris and collie played great games.

  149. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2015 5:53 pm

I agree. Rigo needs to forget about that freak miss. It happens. This game wasn’t going to be loss or won by him alone. He has been doing well this season.

Our losses over the years, including tonight, is far deeper. It is systemic. We need an overhaul. Hopefully Matlin is working on an emergency plan as we speak.

  150. Old Diver October 17, 2015 5:57 pm

Everyone knows what will happen at the end of the season. Only question is what advantage is there for UH to fire him now.

  151. clyde October 17, 2015 5:59 pm

You can’t hang the blame on any single player, but if UH makes that field goal after wisely burning the clock … end of game, and all the pundits’ claims of conservative play-calling, playing not to lose, etc. would be just white noise.
Like everyone else, just my two cents.
moocher: FYI, the field goal would have put UH up 30-21, that’s 9 points, so NM couldn’t force OT with one possession.

  152. hitmanhart October 17, 2015 6:00 pm

aloha everyone !! 1st half play to win !! 2nd half play not to lose !! 4 year know still no work !! that why coach chow is 9-34 time to hang it up and go sell manapua!! lol
but great game nice to see we have offence !! seem like 2nd half chow only run play that work in the 1st half

  153. moocher October 17, 2015 6:01 pm

    Eek typos 🙂

  154. Arcumfortis October 17, 2015 6:10 pm

I feel for the team and fans….this was a painful one. I feel for coach Chow too. It must be horrible to be unable to win and unable to change. The interesting play is now Dave Matilin’s. Everyone has seen enough (even diehard optimistics like me). So let’s move on. I have no doubt coach Chow gave it his best. But when your best is consistently ineffective it is time to go. I have no illusions about an interim coach all of a sudden producing a winning team. But at least it will create a little interest and we can all focus on future possibilities.

  155. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 6:11 pm

Hmmmmm we would not buy a manapua from him…. he he he

  156. moocher October 17, 2015 6:11 pm

    Clyde….you’re right 🙂

I can understand the conservative play calling. But still, put your kicker in the middle of the field. After the missed kick, D could not stop them and the O ended up stopping us with penalties.

Nonetheless this loss was squarely on coaching. Had the kick been good yes they wouldve won….but as they say, if my aunty had balls she would’ve been my uncle 🙂

Thanks for the effort, it was there 🙂

  157. Akamai Okole October 17, 2015 6:11 pm

  158. cocobean October 17, 2015 6:14 pm

Ouch! Oweee! Itai! Aray! Ai! Aduh! Aish! No matter how you say it this was a painful lost. Hope the team can bounce back from this one. Still gotta play six more.

  159. moocher October 17, 2015 6:15 pm

Even if we complain, its good to know we will always show up each week and hope for the best 🙂

I mean imagine a losing program along with no fans posting?

  160. clyde October 17, 2015 6:18 pm

It coulda been worse; did you see how Michigan lost to Michigan State? Now, that was itai!

  163. HawaiiMongoose October 17, 2015 6:22 pm

Calling the bootleg pass on third down deep in the red zone was unconscionable. Maybe on second down that would have been a good, aggressive play call. But on third down, late in the 4th quarter and with a 6-point lead, even a Pop Warner coach knows that you run the ball to the center of the field and give your kicker the easiest possible chip shot to put the game out of reach. Calling a play that could result in the ball being placed on the hash mark and giving your kicker a tough angle to convert is the last thing you want to do. And so of course that’s exactly what UH did. Assuming Chow didn’t call that play, he should have overruled it; that’s his job as head coach. What a terrible disservice to the players who gave their all and deserved a win.

  164. azwarrior22 October 17, 2015 6:35 pm

I can’t take it anymore… We need a coaching change NOW. It’s hard to get excited when every game is the same old results and another loss. I don’t want to hear the same old excuse…we have to try harder and eliminate mistakes. Well, the biggest mistake is the captain of the ship and he must go. Make a change now so the fans can get excited again about Warrior football.

  165. islandman October 17, 2015 6:48 pm

One game this season, i think the coach was blamed for just having the player fall down in the middle of the field to set up a field goal.

  166. HawaiiMongoose October 17, 2015 6:58 pm

#165… That was a much different situation. It was at the end of the half rather than the end of the game, and there was much less time on the clock, but enough to take a shot at the end zone before settling for the field goal.

  167. Arcumfortis October 17, 2015 7:04 pm

#165,166. There can be interesting discussions about any given play call and often there is merit to the different points of view. For me it is when one steps back and considers 3 1/2 years of play and play calling that things become clear. And what I see is bad……..very bad.

  168. oneseason October 17, 2015 7:07 pm

Rainbow Wahine off to a good start. Let’s go bows!

  169. Arcumfortis October 17, 2015 7:09 pm

Perhaps the biggest positive we have in our favor is that Dave Matlin used to run the Hawaii Bowl. I would love to have been a fly on the wall and heard his comments as the home team sank to new lows year after year and his bowl game was less and less viable. So I imagine Dave is even more fed up than we all are. If such a thing is possible.

  170. Willie October 17, 2015 7:11 pm

#143oneseason, that has to be the perfect explanation of what we have seen for 3 full seasons now. “Prevent offense”, yup this gotta be a classic; it means preventing a meaningful chance to be successful.

I have called it differently many time, playing not to lose. I like yours a heck of a lot better.

Sorry that my 1 point loss guess was correct.

  171. oneseason October 17, 2015 7:31 pm

    Rainbow Wahine take set 1 … 25-17

  172. Willie October 17, 2015 7:42 pm

Going to try to repost this again. Just agreed with #143oneseason on his perfect description of encapsulating the on going frustration. “Prevent offense” is a very appropriate description of what we have seen for 3 + seasons so far. I have called it playing not to lose, but oneseason’s call is way better.

  173. Hank October 17, 2015 7:42 pm

#167 the play calling is horrible….2 examples

Running on 2nd and long to set up 3rd and long,
Running the same RB 4 times in a row until he loses yards.

    This happens in every game.

  174. Manoa Mist October 17, 2015 8:07 pm

At the end all we needed was a field goal and we win. But we drain away the seconds without ever stopping the clock. We can’t even hike the ball without two offsides. Then we hold. Then we throw interception. Laughingstock of the nation.

  175. oneseason October 17, 2015 8:11 pm

    Rainbow Wahine win set 2 … 25-23
    #171 … Thank you.

  176. Old School Dave October 17, 2015 8:25 pm

Imagine how Ikaika could prosper in an offense like the one runned by Beau Baldwin at Eastern Washington. I hope that AD Matlin is proactive in getting candidates together. Four years of short hair, going to class, discipline off the field hasn’t transferred onto the field. This isn’t BYU! New, young, clean start with fresh ideas (not old rehashed ones) is needed. Having a Hawaii connection need NOT be a job requirement, this time.

Old, but smart enough to know that if you don’t change, you die

  177. Makai October 17, 2015 8:35 pm

    Clyde,
Can’t blame one player, but can blame the coach. If he was playing for the win or thinking ahead run the ball to the center of the field and eliminate the angle especially on the road. A 10 point lead with little time on the clock and the outcome would have been different.

On another note I was tired of listening to Robert calling the games now I’m sick of him might just watch road games on mute. He says some stupid stuff and makes so many mistakes. Bring in Kanoa for football!

  178. kama krab October 17, 2015 8:44 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Got one word to say, PATHETIC.
The boys deserve much better. To lead most of the game and to lose like we did.

    PATHETIC

  179. oneseason October 17, 2015 8:47 pm

Anteaters take set 3 … Let’s go bows!

  180. winning October 17, 2015 9:08 pm

NMex was the easiest road game for UH. They blew it. Conservative with a measly 10 pt. lead. Looks like a repeat of last years 4-9 season. Bye Bye.

  181. st. anthony trojan October 17, 2015 9:10 pm

Just hope no one says…that was not the play that was called… n Ikaika was supposed to run to center of field..etc..to get a good spot for kicker… cuz if that was the excuse…then could have taken a delay of game penalty…so he have a better angle… not so or call TIME OUT… N DISCUSS N CALM DOWN…

  182. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2015 9:13 pm

  183. Akamai Okole October 17, 2015 9:16 pm

Listening to HS FB from Aloha and wondering who gets to set their schedule first widda Stadium Authority. UH? ILH? OIA?

  184. Akamai Okole October 17, 2015 9:17 pm

Martinez: Just wondering…if this ends up the way it looks like, when will the ILH playoff be played?

Veneri: Not sure but UH is playing on the road again.

    Hmmm…

  185. oneseason October 17, 2015 9:20 pm

    Rainbow Wahine win set 4 … 26 – 24 … And match.

  186. clyde October 17, 2015 9:24 pm

Makai: What baffles me is that no matter what the coaches do, they’re wrong. Well, if you read or hear from their critics.
On that third-and-goal play, they go for the kill shot — something half of the critics complain they don’t do — and the play gets nothing and, after the fact, the all-but clinching FG is missed because the coaches didn’t call for a run to set up better FG angle. In others, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I didn’t mind the call for the bootleg/option. It was set up pretty well. I believe they brought OL Moananu in as the blocking back; I believe he was the guy who cleared the way for Harris’ TD, so they were showing run all the way, thinking they could slip Moleni into the EZ for a TD pass or Woolsey could run it in. Didn’t work, but give them credit for trying for the coup de grace.

  187. clyde October 17, 2015 9:26 pm

Stephen: Ha. Ha. On my only road trip to Albuquerque, I remember having my post-game meal from the hotel vending machine … ham & cheese.

  188. kev-1 October 17, 2015 9:35 pm

If you go back to about 7ish minutes left in the game, that’s when the play calling got ultra conservatve. I get it, but thought it was too soon to think that you had the win, especially since you were only up by 6.

Sure, the missed kick contributed to the loss, but when people say it is on the coaches, it is because of the collective effort.

I don’t really understand those of you who are criticizing the critics for condemning the coaches. Really, you have no argument already. Look at the big picture and the last 3 seasons of football.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t is exactly right, and deserved.

  189. 3-Prong October 17, 2015 9:43 pm

    Hind sight is 20-20.

Good try boys. Heads up. LET’S GO BOWS!

….and what an exciting (and a little too dicey) game at the Stanley tonight. Congrats Wahine!

I was pleased with the offense in the first half. I thought Woolsey really stepped up.

  192. Come on, Man! October 17, 2015 9:55 pm

good teams find ways to win. bad teams find ways to lose. chow has instilled a culture of losing and sloppy and undisciplined play. he’s reached von appen status a while ago.

UH should just hire larry price as its football coach. it’ll work because after the players do a katoosh, they will get an extra scoop of rice in the post game meal.

  193. clyde October 17, 2015 10:07 pm

It’s funny. I watched the game with a guy who was getting very anxious during that ill-fated fourth-quarter drive. Come on pass already! Go deep! Why are they only running? Me? I was loving it … you have a lead, you’re keeping the ball away from the other team, you’re eating up precious clock. If you score TD or FG, you put a triple-option team in dire straits (well, fool me when UNM put Apodaca in at QB).
But, I thought that was sound football. They ran 14 plays, and took 6:13 off the clock. Funny, though, even had they kicked the FG and won 30-21, I’m sure some critics would still have complained. I’m thinking they are so beat down and frustrated, anything other than a coaching change would not suffice. I guess I can’t blame them.

  194. Come on, Man! October 17, 2015 10:16 pm

process versus outcome oriented. there’s a difference.

  195. Arcumfortis October 17, 2015 10:19 pm

Yes it is easy to play armchair quarterback and second guess coaches. And for most of us June Jones’ proclamation that we “don’t know what we don’t know” is, I think, very accurate. But although there is probably not a lot of D1 coach level sophistication on this board (though there seems to be some pretty tuned in people) I think there is common sense. And common sense (along with grade school arithmetic) says we are a chronically losing team. From the start of the Chow era I have wondered why we lack the instinct to finish off our opponents when we have the opportunity. Instead we go into the (now famously named) “prevent offense.” This is not one play or one series in a game but a pattern that has been persistent over years now. It is boring football. I could put up with boring football if it was winning football. But boring, losing football is hard to endure. When I look at all the empty seats at Aloha Stadium I conclude many have long ago found better things to do than watch boring, losing football. I respect the coaches and believe they make determined efforts. But their efforts have not paid off with wins. I felt coach Chow deserved to coach this year because it seemed we were finally primed to turn the corner. But instead we just keep turning round and round in the same tiresome way. I hope this period of misery wakes up the people at UH to either make a commitment to winning (money will be needed) as other mid majors have done (eg Boise State and Utah State) or just admit they will settle for mediocrity and support chronically cobbling together a poor team. Coach Chow’s salary is actually a bargain (as absurd as that is at $500,000/year) But we have all noticed that sometimes the stuff we pick up cheap in the sale bin is there for a reason. It’s just not good stuff and no one else wants to buy it.

  196. Ciao chow October 17, 2015 10:22 pm

Sad I was looking at the score during the high school football playoff game I was watching and UH lost last minute. I’m tired of watching this kind of results! Chow has the same dang excuses.”We lost to a good team, we can’t make mistakes with good teams”…. I thought we were gonna have at least a bowl game Chow!! Now I’ve lost hope….. I’d rather watch high school football, more exciting. Peace

  197. cocobean October 17, 2015 10:26 pm

Arcum.. I think JJ’s quote about the worst armchair QBs is ” the funny part is they don’t know that they don’t now.” He said I with a chuckle.

  198. Markazulu October 17, 2015 10:27 pm

It’s the risk u take when u take ur foot off the gas. I was surprised they didn’t put Mel Davis in the goal line situation.

  199. kev-1 October 17, 2015 10:37 pm

Hey, at least the tough part of the schedule is over.

That was a heck of a team we played today.

We didn’t have anyone on the scout team that could give us the look that the back up QB brought. That guy will play on Sundays.

We’re not gonna quit. That’s not what we do. We’re gonna put this one behind us and get back to work. That’s all we know how to do.

When you play a good football team like that, you can’t make silly mistakes.

We’ll get it right. We can still go 8 and 5. It’s still early. We’ll get back to work and we’ll fix it.

Did I get um all??? Sorry. I’m just having a hard time not being so jaded.

  200. cocobean October 17, 2015 10:43 pm

Was’nt June’s quote about amchair QBs ” the funny part is they don’t know that they don’t know.” He said it with a chuckle.

    Kev-1,

    You missed one.

“My headset isn’t working, I can’t hear the callers question regarding why I have have failed to recruit and groom a QB with more than 2 years of eligibility.”

  202. nanakuli October 17, 2015 11:44 pm

OMG Kev-1 knows Norm Chow one liners. Bobby Curren should interview him and stop kissing okole to the real Coach Chow.

  203. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2015 11:58 pm

If someone wanted to condense our past 3.5 seasons into a 3-4 minute video, the last 3-4 minutes of that game was a spooky accurate example.

From questionable play-calling, poor execution, lack of clock management, piss poor discipline and zero urgency, it was all there for us to see.

    AUWE.

  204. st. anthony trojan October 18, 2015 12:30 am

Kudos… to sum very well coached teams….Wahine…St. Louis…Kahuku…all winners 2 day…n Notre Dame…Nebraska…San Diego State…wish we could have joined in with group…instead we are in the same boat as Michigan…so we are in good company…he he he

Nite all… not to worry the sun will shine tomorrow…just not here in Manila… cuz he have a typhoon sort of stationary here…guess we will see the wreckage it has done in the morning…

meanwhile …. offensive genius Rolo LOST to sad sack Wyoming,

2 weeks ago, Rolo LOST to that high school coach.

now, I no feel too bad, because someone else that we know, sucks.

next weeks game – I wonder who going ……. lose. mebbe should have contest to predict which team going lose, and by how many points.

  206. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2015 12:52 am

Ault was the mastermind behind Nevada. It was never Rolovich no matter how many Hawaii folks wanted to believe otherwise. It’s even more apparent now with Ault’s departure.

I think the same goes for those who insist that Sitake from Utah is a ready for a HC gig since their defense has been pretty good. Chances are that it’s actually more Wittingham’a defense than anything else. And similarly how some may think Bailey is a bad OC when it’s more of Chow’s playbook at work.

  207. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2015 2:42 am
