Game day: Nevada

UH made the official announcement: Ryan Mouton starts at right slotback, replacing Aaron Bain. As a result, Jameel Dowling starts at corner in Mouton’s spot. Keao Monteilh becomes the nickelback.

A 3-star prospect from the Mainland also is visiting this weekend. He played last night, hopped on a plane this morning, and will attend tonight’s game.
This is the first year in the past decade that the Warriors have brought in Mainland high school prospects during the season, and it is part of the strategy of showing recruits what it would be like to go through the preparation of a game weekend. The approach is realistic and refreshing.

* * *

Thanks again to the pay-it-forward generosity of our readers. Maverick won the football tickets, then allowed it to go back in the pool. Wafan did the same. And Hoohiki donated her tickets to DJ.

Because of renovations to Cooke/Ching Field, the UH Marching Band practices on the grass soccer field.

    GAME DAY, BABY!!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Good Morning Tsaiko Family!!!

  10. Jacen October 25, 2008 8:57 am

    ST,

Watch those teeanagers carefully while they play their internet enabled games, the dialog can get a bit graphic, and the games can be addicting. It’s a good thing that you still have to give DT the cord to play, you can always cut the cord if the play gets out of hand.

  11. addahknowjoe October 25, 2008 9:02 am

Love that shot of the band.

Would be awesome if that scene could be played out on either days before gameday or before the team leaves on road games. Would build camaraderie between the band, team and school.

I know there was some logistical challenges for the band to play for the team on those days.

    Sorry,

My nine year old’s sig (Jacen) was still in the reply box.

    and so who’s the recruit?
is he a big guy or a little guy?
    no what i mean?

  24. Kazz October 25, 2008 9:17 am

The UH Rainbow Marching Band does not get the credit they rightfully deserve.

A lot of people could learn a thing or two about crowd participation from them.

  25. Kazz October 25, 2008 9:19 am

    RE: Weather.

Central Oahu was drenched this morning and looks like the only area clearing up is in town and near the airport. Looks as if it will be clearing up by noon near the stadium.

  26. djmitcho October 25, 2008 9:21 am

Good Morning Tsai-ko Village! Hope everyone has a great day at the T-Gate and the game. And I know it will be topped of with a Warrior win at the end of the evening.
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  27. djmitcho October 25, 2008 9:23 am

    Stretch,
Didn’t know if you saw my post yesterday, but I got the package. A BIG mahalo for the “extras”

  28. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 25, 2008 9:30 am

Wow! Look what happens when I have to spend the day at work! A kazillion posts in yesterday’s blog and none of them mine.

After last night’s Wahine win, we went over to Murakami Stadium to watch some Hawaii Winter Baseball, but when the score hit 10 for the Waikiki Beachboys, we left. The Honu by then had managed to score 2 runs.

Re the weather – DrDoc looked at the National Weather Service’s forecast for today & tonight in the 96701 zipcode and frankly, it’s going to be pretty junk. We’ll be be bringing a 10 x 10 tarp to cover the cooking area as well as the pop-up tent and should arrive by 11 am to set up both as well as the tables, chairs and recycling bing.

However, we have a not-feeling-so-good dog – Saturn – and a 12:30 pm vet appointment back in Kailua so we won’t be back until 2 pm or so. I do have D1’s LaTech DVD and will give it to him when we get back for good.

Too bad about the PBS – we were planning to make a fresh corn/organic ham/sweet potato chowder but canceled that, but now it’s too lateto make it. Have no idea what we’ll wind up bringing.

Stephen – how about another sideline ticket contest before the end of the season.

OFF-SUBJECT: After some 38 years of work by dedicated volunteers – many of whom are no longer with us – and some really intense times at the Legislature, City Council & with our Congressional delegation over the past five years dotting tees and crossing eyes, Kawainui Marsh is now owned by the State of Hawai`i. This is really something to celebrate!

Now comes the easy work of clearing, cleaning, remediating, restoring, preserving & protecting.

GO WARRIORS! GO WAHINE! BRING HOME VICTORY TO HAWAI`I!!

  29. Addahknowsports© October 25, 2008 9:33 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

    aloha kakahiaka!

    I’m ready to Go!
Got Kymry’s tix for special delivery to a Tsai-ko family. Of course I left them on the counter at home. So after dropping Ukuboi off at 5:30 am I had to go all the way back home. Barely made it back to Big Save and then slept in the car for an hour before buying some milk to take home.
    The adventure has begun!

  38. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 10:09 am

I hope I can tear myself away from the T-Gate early enuf to watch the drumline perform before the game! Ukuboi and the 05 Kauai Rose parade band got to work with a UH percussionist. I think they were the only band marching to the beat of the Black Eyes Peas!

  39. Addahknowsports© October 25, 2008 10:09 am

    Kymry-

Those cookies are AWESOME! I agree with Liz…truly a work of art. It’s harder to draw lines with icing than one might think.

    Liz-

Thank you so much for yesterday’s pho call and pho treat! Also thanks for posting the pics. I’ll see ya later on today.

Well…maybe not that bad. It is overcast and it is raining. It is not dumping, but you never know. One section of town can be sunny and the next section could be a free car wash.

  48. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 10:36 am

wow. The guy who gave up his seat got vouchers for $400.

  49. NYUH October 25, 2008 10:41 am

I heard that in Thailand they have over 250 names for colors of green. It would take about 200 to describe all the greens on the UH uniform. I hope they can iron that out soon. Design rule of thumb: If it’s not the same, make it different. I wasn’t that disappointed when I first saw them in Florida, but the away uniforms look a bit better than the home ones.

  50. NYUH October 25, 2008 10:43 am

Yeah, I finally got a recording of the Warriors in HD, but it was at Boise and the blue field is not an enjoyable HD experience.

  51. Hoohiki October 25, 2008 10:44 am

    Good mid-morning everyone!!!

Chawan cut, I’ve been asked before whether I live in Pearl City, because of my blog name…I live on Maui. I chose that name because in Hawaiian, one of the meanings is “to swear”. It’s open for interpretation.

Just in case anyone was wondering why I chose to give the winning tickets to DJ….her post #682 seemed so heartfelt, “….missed it by one again. Maybe next time…”

Good luck, Warriors! Wish I could watch you guys in person, but PPV will do. To all the Tsai-kos who will go to the game, I’m envious…. have fun!!!

  52. sumtinwong October 25, 2008 10:45 am

    Good Morning,

I’ve two (2) tickets to tonight’s game in the yellow section. If you want free tickets , please email sumtinwongxxx@yahoo.com — replace ‘xxx’ with ‘808’ and we can meet at the stadium @ about 5:30-ish.

    GO WARRIORS.

  53. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 10:45 am

  57. Kazz October 25, 2008 10:54 am

Looks like the weather presents another one of the many EXCUSES for those lame-os who are physically and financially able to attend football games but don’t.

LET’S SHOW THEM WHAT BEING A REAL FAN IS!!!

No amount of rain or wind will keep TSAIKOS away from supporting our team!!!

  58. Kekoa October 25, 2008 11:00 am

OK…Time to make the salmon swim into the container (now that’s fresh!) and load up the Ka’awela.

Da Poi is pounded. The Conch shell has sounded.
The Wolf Pack will be grounded as well.

If there is any doubt, that we will win out…
Then don’t come out to the game.
Because if you do, and Kazz does spot you…

He will Whoop your A$$! because he doesn’t care if it ryhmes with anything! Don’t mess with his Warriors!!

  59. Kazz October 25, 2008 11:03 am

Just spoke with Koakane and he is the first line of defense at the tailgate right now.

Sounds like the area is nice and damp…

  60. wafan October 25, 2008 11:06 am

A little rain should not be an excuse not to go to cheer for the Warriors.

When will they realize skin is water-proof and their clothing will dry out especially if they jump up and down while yelling (at the correct times). And, no. Getting wet will not cause you to get a cold. Although you might feel uncomfortable for a short while just think how the Warriors feel after the game.

    Geez.

  61. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 11:13 am

    Hi, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister,

Man, I’m chomping at the bit to see the “new” offense coming out. I sure hope that the changes will work and get our offense untracked.

If the Warriors get their offense untracked to any measurable degree, we will go undefeated the rest of the year.

  62. Kazz October 25, 2008 11:13 am

Wafan… clothing tends to dry quicker when it is from Under Armour.

  63. Kekoa October 25, 2008 11:14 am

Gear up for the Na Koa Banquet on 12/07/08. Putting a Tsaiko table together for this year’s soiree will be up for discussion at the T-gate today. The details will end up on the blog of course.

But yes, NOTHING beats the live game experience…

  71. cocobean October 25, 2008 11:35 am

Who is our pure passer? Alexander or Rausch or Graunke. Interested in who the coaches think that is. I have a feeling they put in some straight running plays for Inoke. Take the snap, fake and run or take the snap and run. This should help the option plays be more effective. It’ll be easier for the O line to block straight ahead, less chance of wiffing a block. Hope they figured out a way to get Mouton 2-3 touches on O.

    BUT ALAS…

    DUTY CALLS!!!

Anyone down for some pulehu wolf compliments of the WARRIORS?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  76. Kazz October 25, 2008 11:48 am

Speaking of ponchos… can we request that the stadium security confiscate all ponchos that are not green or white???? For those that get their poncho taken away they will provide you with a PROPER replacement one with the APPROPRIATE colors!!!

    Some people… I swear… 👿

Brent Rausch is your prototype spread QB. June really wanted him bad.

Perfect height but needs more weight, shifty, but most importantly a quick release and accurate arm.

I like this kid a lot. Good pick up. Let em play

  80. whitey October 25, 2008 11:58 am

hoohiki, don’t know for sure yet about the game day at Tiffanys’, but if it is on, i will have duffer post it. don’t know if nalani will be there, but again will ask duffer to post. i am on my way into the big city (kahului) with my space craft.

al, was going to possilbe game today, but due to lag and possibility of having to host, need to cancel. by the way, if you read my comments about hawaiian air, upper mgt is slowly taking away the aloha spirit from it, but the employees are doing their best to keep it going. another example of eastern mainland mentality is david cole at maui pine. he is threatening to shut down maui pine field operation if the union does not give concessions. cole fired 250+ workers recently and gave himself a $1 million raise. am banking on the maui county council not giving maui pine or kapalua anything and denying all real estate developments. cole went to punahou and uh. what an arsehole!!!

  81. d1島 October 25, 2008 11:59 am

  84. Postmanke October 25, 2008 12:09 pm

    Yikes! Liz, what happened?

  90. wafan October 25, 2008 12:27 pm

Easy poncho solution. Go buy the clear 33+ gallon size trash bags. Better yet, buy the DARK GREEN 33+ gallon size trash bags.

Just remember to cut holes for the arms and head. For some boo-birds just forget to cut the hole for the head. HA!

  91. djmitcho October 25, 2008 12:35 pm

d1 thanks for the update. I was out for awhile and missed the game.

  92. Postmanke October 25, 2008 12:35 pm

1st year coach Kenny N almost certain to go bowling

Paul J one more win away to go bowling

    Coach Mac let’s go…

  93. wafan October 25, 2008 12:35 pm

Having not been to a TGate and the site the weather and ground conditions must be really bad. Hopefully, it clears up enough for the wussy fans to come out and cheer at the correct times.

    Kazz . . .

Heaven forbid they get their clothes wet while supporting the team. Band-wagoneers. I suppose, though, at least they bought tickets!

  94. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 12:39 pm

    SMU lost to Navy.

Fredneck State about to lose to Utah St. 28-27. FS attempting a 59 yd FG w/ :.02

  97. sumtinwong October 25, 2008 12:48 pm

    Kazz,

baka-san, these are extra tickets from our group who happen to have family obligation this Saturday — was trying to give away tickets since Wednesday. Sigh.

  98. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 12:49 pm

ok we are moved and the adult bevs are flowing. No electricity here and a very wide muddy field to cross. Wear rubber slippers or rubber boots.

  99. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 12:49 pm

Any Lo Cal Tsaikos are welcome to come over and watch the game at my place tonight on GamePlan. Email me at rich2176 at yahoo if interested. I’m off the 101 and 405 in the Valley.

  100. NorthShoreFan October 25, 2008 1:01 pm

A boootiful day on the NorthShore…Misty and cool
Made a prediction but hoping to dead wrong!
Every game day it is anticipation of a Warrior victory.
Season is going good at this point and the guys are playing hard.
We will see the Warriors in the Aloha Bowl. Not bad for the first year coach!

  101. Da Punchbowl Kid October 25, 2008 1:02 pm

    Game Day!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

FYI – Weber State leads NAU 21 – 0 in the first quarter, the game can be seen locally on OC channel 246 FCSP.

  103. NorthShoreFan October 25, 2008 1:06 pm

Hey any T-Gaters just go for the food, booze and socializing or does everyone go into the game?

  104. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 1:09 pm

    We need mosquito spray!

Maybe some lanterns for laters. Maybe not.
    Go Warriors!

  105. jm2375 October 25, 2008 1:10 pm

sumtimwong – 2 tsaikos have noted that we are in the same building during the week. next time you have extra tix let me know!

  106. Postmanke October 25, 2008 1:12 pm

Doesn’t seem that long ago watching Kenny N, Brain Norwood, Thor Salanoa and Coach V running it up on OIA opponents at Aloha Staduim.

    Wow 26 years ago!

  107. jm2375 October 25, 2008 1:13 pm

northshorefan – i did an esme last game. actually I went for 2 hrs and then left to pick up my kid. I just wanted to meet all those people I’ve come to know & love on this blog. No be shy. No worry about fuuuud, always get plenny. Just beware of Homey! 😀

  109. Postmanke October 25, 2008 1:14 pm

Kenny N, looking like another former QB turning out to be a outstanding D1 coach

  110. NorthShoreFan October 25, 2008 1:20 pm

    jm2375..
LOL! Now U get me worried! Got to beware of some Tsaikos huh?!???
I like to mix it up with the pots and pans and outside cooking/grilling is a blast for me and the wife. Might drop by for a plate or two, one of these games. Mahalo for the invite. Have a good game!
    GO WARRIORS!

  111. d1島 October 25, 2008 1:37 pm

Shucks…’Cats close to 28-31 then give up 21 unanswered.
No NWC title this year; credit the Bearcats, they pulled together when they needed to.
    Final, 28-52.

    Next stop. Richardson Field.

The cell is slowly drifting off but lack of wind seems to be allowing more rain to form behind it. Oh well, party on!

  112. Darren October 25, 2008 1:40 pm

    Pomai,

    Hawaii 34
    Nevada 17

  113. Rob25 October 25, 2008 1:51 pm

    curveball and Liz,

If you are using Ronnie’s tickets, yes they are loges which means that you have to go up the spiral to the top and then walk down the stairs to the brown. You can’t see the scoreboard because the seats are right next to it above the band. The best part…you don’t get rained on at all…no need worry about ponchos…until you leave.

Have a good time at the game.

Frank and I are on our way to The Butcher Shop Steakhouse…per wafan to enjoy a nice big hunk of mammal! We went to Texas stadium today to get a feel for the parking and go to the Pro Shop. It was unbelievably crowded and HOT! We were too late to take the tour, but I got a sparkly shirt and both of us got one made for the TB game tomorrow. Took some pics there but tired because we made the long drive up after staying up half the night doing Jaeger Bombs.

We will be coming back to our hotel here to listen to the Hawaii game on the internet…hopefully it comes through nicely.

Those cookies sure did look good on Liz’s blog!

Kekoa – Put me next to Ronnie for the Na Koa Banquet. We will be making our rounds getting signatures again this year I am sure.

    Well, gotta get ready!

    GO WARRIORS!!

  114. Jason October 25, 2008 1:52 pm

Stephen: I have a router available too, but it’s wired.

  115. Postmanke October 25, 2008 1:54 pm

Did Kenny N show up JJ by not attempting a pass in the game?

  116. KymryKauai October 25, 2008 2:07 pm

Aloha Wafan: You asked about the cookies I make in H logo…I had custom cookie cutter made from a guy on the mainland who will create copper cookie cutters into any shape or design you want. He also does cookie presses but those are lot more $$$. Hmmmm…maybe someone should create a Tsai-ko logo cookie?! 🙂

LizK: Just read you had to trek back to Waimea to retrieve tickets. I feel so bad. I was worried yesterday I was going to arrive at Pho and forget to bring the tix. I owe you…big mahalos.

  117. KymryKauai October 25, 2008 2:17 pm

I have to give the cookie credit to my friend, Sheila Holtzman, and my 14 year old son, Ryan, who aspires since 5 years old to be a chef/pastry chef (that’s if the professional soccer dream doesn’t work out). He’s cooked and baked for my family and friends ever since he could find his way around the kitchen. At one of our football parties my friend Sheila made round sugar cookies and decorated the tops with a green H logo. Ryan saw those and said mom I want to make an H logo cookie cutout and that’s exactly what he did. We’ve been doing the logo cookies ever since.

  118. GGma October 25, 2008 2:21 pm

My daughter is working her way to the game as I write. She will get there close to second quarter HOPEFULLY!
I have just had my nap so I can stay up to watch the game It starts at 11:55 here in Niagara Falls on espn gameplan. I hope Florida Ken is doing the same thing
    GO Warriors!!

  119. wafan October 25, 2008 2:41 pm

    KymryKauai . . .

Cool about the cookie cutters. Can you give me a web site for him?

I donot think, though, I will have the patience to ice them and put on the decorative icing as you did — I would rather eat them.

  120. wafan October 25, 2008 2:44 pm

Very clever claymation on the Disney Channel. Yes. The Disney Channel.

If you ever have the chance watch “Shawn the Sheep”. By the same studio that makes the “Wallace and Grommet” show. Absolutely brilliant story telling!

  121. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 2:47 pm

    GGma,

Did you mean FloridaTed? Yes, I’m also watching gameplan. I hope it’s a great victory, I could use a little lift.

Navy and SMU today…Kenny Niumatalolo vs June Jones…Kenny called his perfect game –77 straight running plays; zero pass attempts. June called 11 running plays..too bad June didn’t call his perfect game today! THAT game would have been remarkable!

    GO Warriors!!

  124. wafan October 25, 2008 3:02 pm

    LizK . . .

The photos are great! Is that Mrs. A-House cutting what looks like a sausage? Or is it parts of the group that argued with her over the pavilion use?

    HA!

  125. NYUH October 25, 2008 3:03 pm

Quite a kick by Fresno to beat Utah State. 57 yards I believe.

  126. wafan October 25, 2008 3:05 pm

Man, the food looks so good.

  127. NYUH October 25, 2008 3:07 pm

cavewarrior: you forgot to mention the score 34-7 for Navy. But more than that, PJ offense is so much more fun to watch. Funaki would have been perfect. Remember Garret Gabriel’s dramatic wins over BYU when they first implemented the triple-option?

  128. GGma October 25, 2008 3:24 pm

Yes I mean,t you Ted Just a senior moment as long as we understand each other I did get the Fox north sports channel you know .ty

  129. cavewarrior October 25, 2008 3:35 pm

Wow..Just noticed Idaho beat NM St today 20-14.

NYUH: Yea, minor detail :)….SMU can’t stop the run… But they could not pass either today…still waiting for JJ to call his perfect game – all pass plays.

  130. sumtinwong October 25, 2008 3:48 pm

    Ok. jm2375

  131. Postmanke October 25, 2008 3:53 pm

I hope one of the new components of this offense is to eliminate 3rd and longs and put a premium on 2nd down play calling. No need to go long on 2nd down plays. But having said that, NV db’s tend to bite underneath and wheel routes can he had for big plays.

  132. NEO October 25, 2008 3:56 pm

    Aloha Gang!

Been a while, I’ve kinda been busy, and yeah… But anyhow… I missed you guys… GO WARRIORS IMUA!!!

    NEO(out)

  133. wafan October 25, 2008 4:06 pm

Just over 2 hours to go!

  134. 99club October 25, 2008 4:15 pm

So, how many yards does Tyler throw for tonight?

  135. wafan October 25, 2008 4:19 pm

    Yum! Lilikoi pie.

It is a good thing the TSA (The Stupid okoles) finally decided to use their one collective brain cell and allow goodies between islands as carry-ons. What a mess it would have been if you had to send it via checked baggage — costly, too!

  136. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 4:52 pm

    1.5 hours….

  137. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 4:55 pm

Any one know of a link to watch the game?

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!!

  138. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 4:57 pm

    Pomai!!!!

    38-21 Warriors!!

  139. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 4:57 pm

  145. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 5:09 pm

Tough game tonight for the boys, hope this weeks adjustments and personnel changes in practice will put them on the winning end tonight. I have a feeling tonights game going be rough but exciting cannot wait…one moa owwah! GO WARRIORS!!!

  146. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 5:30 pm

ST just called. Some surprises tonight!!

99Club – is TG playing? If so, would that be the “pure passer”? LOL

  147. 99club October 25, 2008 5:35 pm

    Rich-

I hope he’s playing! I just can’t imagine not taking advantage of UNR’s terrible pass defense.

  148. Postmanke October 25, 2008 5:41 pm

I like no huddle hurry-up all the way

  149. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 5:44 pm

Me too…I remember last year when JJ shuttled Colt, TG, and Inoke in during the first series. That was great!

  150. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 5:45 pm

It’ll be interesting what we’ll see.
    30 more minutes!

  151. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 5:51 pm

    Au’ryte almost game time…

eh what’s the Phillies – Rays score???

  152. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 5:56 pm

    Ph 2 – Rays 1

  153. Postmanke October 25, 2008 5:56 pm

What ever we do we better be one up on Chris Ault as he is a master at adjusting to game situations. For the players sake, we best not get out coached in this game.

  154. wafan October 25, 2008 6:04 pm

Short nap this afternoon — yep

    WB on — yep

    Hotdogs and buns — yep

    Soft drinks chilled — yep

    Popcorn — yep

    Assorted munchies — yep

ESPN1420 on and volume adjusted — yep

Ready for the kick-off — yep

    Bring it on!

  155. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 6:08 pm

You can coach the heck out of a team, but when all is said and done, it comes down to execution. Let’s hope they had enough time with whatever new stuff they’re putting in, that they’ll be able to PLAY the plan.

  156. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:08 pm

Just tuned in to the radio show midstream, and…er…Graunke’s our man for Nevada? Along with Funaki…I guess? And I missed the first part about a defensive playmaker finally getting his chance on offense (gotta be Mouton, right?) If one thing stays the same for this team this year, it’s change.

  157. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:10 pm

Anyway, nice to hear that Graunke seems to have healed from that beating he took at Oregon State. And Mouton on offense could be seriously good stuff for the team. Sadly, our slotbacks have been up and down this year, he might help give the team a spark in that department (and heck, give him another option come NFL Draft time). Go Warriors!

  158. Postmanke October 25, 2008 6:15 pm

Hawaii and Under Armour should co-produce a bad ass “We Must Protect This House” Intro before every game. or something to match the movie Warriors.. “Click Clack, Warriors… come out and play eeehay…

  159. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:18 pm

oceanic ppv is screwed up again.
    they’re gonna get blasted again.

  160. 22London October 25, 2008 6:18 pm

    Aloha gang….
Big game tonight…I hope it all comes together for us…

  161. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:20 pm

    ok
its good again. maybe it needed me to scare them.

  162. 22London October 25, 2008 6:21 pm

    chawan_cut,
IPTV feed is up…try there if oceanic is still screwed…

  163. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 6:21 pm

Okay….these two announcers on GamePlan wearing aloha shirts and kukui nut leis look like Frick ‘n Frac…lol…

  164. 99club October 25, 2008 6:23 pm

Nevada announcers for ESPN gameplan. One of them is making a fashion statement with a white t-shirt under his aloha shirt.

    C’mon WARRIORS!!!

  165. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 6:23 pm

London, where is the iptv feed? Do you have a link?

    GO WARRIORS!

  166. wafan October 25, 2008 6:23 pm

    Yeah! Go special teams!!!

  167. Maverick October 25, 2008 6:24 pm

Hmmm. Comcast West is broadcasting the game
    Direct tv ch. 698
    CSCA

Don’t know how this one got squeaked in.

    GO WARRIORS!

  168. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:25 pm

OK Frank and I are back from dinner. Got lost on the way. Dang Dallas is big.

wafan – The Butcher Shop was good. I love me a good steak! Had the Cowboy Cut Ribeye and have half left for dinner before we go to the game. Very nice waiter and not crowded but busy.

    GO WARRIORS!

  169. wafan October 25, 2008 6:26 pm

    sojuNtaegu . . .

iPTV is a service that requires you purchase a box and then a yearly subscription. Less than $300 for the first year (box and subscription) then around $150 per year (subscription only) thereafter.

Thinking about it for next year.

  170. 99club October 25, 2008 6:27 pm

    That could’a been a pick 6! Great job D!

  171. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:27 pm

Good news: Very nice defense by the Warriors.

Potentially very bad news: Adam Leonard running into the locker room for X-rays for a possible serious hand injury.

  172. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:27 pm

    ok, mouton at wr,
    inoke at qb
    bain returned the punt.
    what else will we see?

  174. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 6:27 pm

where is dj? Jojo is lonely.

  175. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:28 pm

Thank goodness it isn’t Washington. No offense, but he hasn’t gained any yards and always runs laterally or backwards. On top of that, he doesn’t go up to catch the punt and if he does then he tends to drop it or fumble it.

  176. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:29 pm

Funaki is starting from good field position. Graunke being held in reserve? Yes I know I’m treading on the forbidden ground of second-guessing the coaches, but if you want to give Nevada a puzzling look, you start Graunke, eh?

Horrific first series on offense. Warriors manage -7 yards. Sigh.

  177. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:31 pm

thank you stephen for removing the picture. it was of my beloved band, but it does slow the page loading.

  178. Postmanke October 25, 2008 6:32 pm

    BowsForever,

This is our conservative new look

  179. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:32 pm

Yikes AL already out of the game. I hope that he isn’t seriously injured, but not a good sign if he’s getting x-rayed!

  180. 22London October 25, 2008 6:32 pm

    sojuNtaegu & wafan,

Re IPTV a box is not needed…you can select the live streaming option…still have to pay though

  181. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 6:32 pm

    Thanks all!

  182. wafan October 25, 2008 6:32 pm

    Rob25 . . .

I am glad you and Frank enjoyed the Butcher Block. I was amazed the first time I walked in there — all those refrigerator cases full of beautiful slabs of perfectly aged beef. YUM!!!

The last time I went there I also got the cowboy cut ribeye, too. And, I ended up taking half of it home. That was the best piece of meat I have ever had. Very reasonable prices!!!

Maybe GG should try that place for a dinner. HA!

  183. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:33 pm

This time around, we shouldn’t wait for Funaki to warm up or get in trouble _if_ we’re really trying for a 2-QB combo. I would give Graunke his shot by the third series if Funaki can’t get it done right away, given Funaki’s apparent penchant for getting too down on himself if things don’t go well.

  184. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:33 pm

Nice stop by the defense. Alright Brashton and Keala!

  185. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 6:34 pm

    FUMBLE, RUMBLE TD WARRIORS!!

  186. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:34 pm

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    D!!!!!!!!!!!!! = TD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  187. wafan October 25, 2008 6:34 pm

    Yay big D!

  188. 99club October 25, 2008 6:34 pm

    YESSSSSS!!!!!! TD!!!!!

  189. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:34 pm

    Alright Fonoti!

Thanks to Veikune and Josh Leonard!

  190. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:35 pm

John Fonoti brings the pick-six! A touchdown by a defensive lineman…a rare sight. 😉 We desperately need this from the defense.

  191. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:35 pm

we didn’t have this qb pressure last week.
    yay for a new week!

  192. 99club October 25, 2008 6:36 pm

USC and AZ tied at 10-10 in 3rd Qtr

  193. Postmanke October 25, 2008 6:36 pm

Ault will pull CK and put in Nick Graziano – who might be a better QB

  194. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:37 pm

    wafan

It was called The Butcher Shop Steakhouse. I wonder if it was the same. They used to have refrigerated cases but don’t use that to display the meat anymore. It was cooked on a grill right next to the case. It was located on Munger and Lamar Street. Would that be the same place?

If not, it was good and not bad prices…not cheap, but nice healthy steak. Got to pretend that it was wolf, hahahaha!

  195. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 6:38 pm

    SOL just demolished the runner

  196. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:38 pm

AWWW SHEEIT OUCH BE@TCH CHEE HUU SOLLY!!!

  197. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:38 pm

solly with the crash of of that rb.

  198. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:38 pm

Congrats to Eliminian…and on one heck of a tackle, from the crowd’s reaction.

  199. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:39 pm

    The Eliminianator!

  200. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:40 pm

    WTH!

  201. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 6:40 pm

    Come on boys!

  202. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 6:40 pm

someone needs to smack that qb.
    damn his long legs!

  203. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:40 pm

Time for the offense to do its job. Is it just me or is Hawaii’s D falling for more trick plays than last year?

  204. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 6:41 pm

That QB is fast. He was pulling away from our DBs.

  205. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:41 pm

Ahh, nice fake by Kaepernick…das alright dat was a good play by Nevada…defense caught off guard…regardless they playing tough banging heads tonight…I feel good about this game auryte!

  206. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 6:41 pm

Wow…that dude is fast for 6’6″. Nice run for TD by Nevada.

  207. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:42 pm

At 6’6″ his stride alone is like 2 steps of our DB’s, plus he skinny and is fast…gotta nail em every chance tonight

  208. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:43 pm

60 yard QB fake is a bit unacceptable for me. Certainly didn’t happen last year, though I’ll give Kaepernick for being the Cyborg Gazelle he is. Keep your heads in the game, D!

    Here comes Graunke!

  209. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 6:43 pm

    LETS GO TYLER!

  210. Postmanke October 25, 2008 6:43 pm

might be a long night for the camera man too..

  211. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:43 pm

60 yard QB fake is a bit unacceptable for me. Certainly didn’t happen last year, though I’ll give Kaepernick credit for being the Cyborg Gazelle he is. Keep your heads in the game, D!

    Here comes Graunke!

    Sorry for any double post.

  212. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:45 pm

    Ghosts of series past.

Funaki…negative yards, ends at the 38.

Graunke…negative yards, ends at the 38.

  213. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:46 pm

Offense cannot be so obvious in trying to get Mouton the ball, sheesh…throw the ball downfield dayumit!!!

  214. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:46 pm

Offense cannot be so obvious in trying to get Mouton the ball, sheesh…throw the ball downfield dayumit!!!

  215. wafan October 25, 2008 6:46 pm

    Rob25 . . .

I do not remember what street it was on. It is probably the same place. I know it was just off the Dallas MarketPlace — kind of like Fort Street Mall.

Does not matter, though. As long as the both of you had a great meal with real USA beef! Yum.

    ===

So much for Graunke’s debut. Come on guys!!!

  216. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 6:47 pm

    the rain is falling

  217. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:47 pm

Well, it’s all good until Nevada scores. We’re missing Colt, sure, but back-to-back 3-and-outs is beyond poor. Rob and Bobby have it right.

  218. 99club October 25, 2008 6:47 pm

Nice punt, now keep ’em backed up!

  219. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:49 pm

Lets go Oline block get that ball in the air downfield…

  220. 99club October 25, 2008 6:49 pm

    Nice.

  221. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:50 pm

    wafan

Yes, that’s the place. It totally reminded me of the Fort Street Mall area with more restaurants and horse carriages.

  222. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 6:50 pm

3 and out bad punt –

  223. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:51 pm

Funaki needs to look off the dayum safety lockin on to the primary receiver too much…c’mon baby lets go!!!

  224. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:51 pm

There goes Washington, not making the catch.

    We need a first down!

OMG, do these receivers know how to go get a ball?

  225. Postmanke October 25, 2008 6:51 pm

how many 3rd and longs was that….

  226. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:51 pm

One quarter, zero first downs. Heck, zero positive yards. Is this gonna be a long night? I sure hope not.

  227. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:53 pm

Lucky us, Nevada burned a TD for not necessarily a good reason. Fake punt at midfield? That would be a dangerous game to play.

  228. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:53 pm

Yea, AL back in the game!

  229. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:53 pm

    Aunty Rob25,

That’s the difference this year with the receivers, they need to help the QB and go get the frikkin ball and pull it out of the air instead of waiting for it to fall in there butterfingers..

Good job spesho teams looking awesome tonight…

  230. wafan October 25, 2008 6:54 pm

    1-yard line?!?!?!?!

    YEAH!

  231. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:54 pm

Nice punt coverage! Grasso could be WAC special teams player of the week.

  232. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 6:54 pm

    grasso is hot!

  233. BowsForever October 25, 2008 6:54 pm

Can’t get much better than the 1! Go D!

    Howzabout a “Safety Dance”?

I wonder, is Graunke up next?

  234. wafan October 25, 2008 6:56 pm

    Whoa LizK!

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  235. Rob25 October 25, 2008 6:56 pm

    PB

That’s been my complaint about this corps all along. They just don’t muscle through it and grab the balls. Don’t want to hear about the rain…they’ve been having problems all season long.

I’m not trying to be so negative about them…but you’re right, they need to help the QB out…whoever it is.

  236. Postmanke October 25, 2008 6:56 pm

    Pistol whipped by the speed

  237. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:57 pm

Solly playing like a beast tonight…can change my total tackles from 17 total to 27 total chee huu!!!

Bain is doing great back there tonight…

  238. wafan October 25, 2008 6:58 pm

Veneri is reporting the receivers are having a hard time keeping their hands/fingers dry — that is why they cannot catch the ball.

So what excuse do they have for all the rest of the games when they missed or dropped the ball?

    Geez!

  239. wafan October 25, 2008 6:59 pm

    INT. Dang it!

  240. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 6:59 pm

Crap what da heo Graunke tuck and run fool!

  241. Postmanke October 25, 2008 7:00 pm

Is the eligible Brent Rausch available?

  242. wafan October 25, 2008 7:00 pm

D is doing a great job!!!
    Yahoo!!!

  243. Rob25 October 25, 2008 7:00 pm

Hey maybe the defense should play offense!

  244. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:00 pm

    Rich
Thanks for the invite but I read this too late may be next time

  251. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:07 pm

That was a bad call, WAC refs at its finest but oh well thanks…

  252. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 7:08 pm

    the rain has stopped

  253. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:09 pm

Woo Hoo GO REFS…a couple more Jack@ss calls and you’ll meet the goal again for worst officiating ever!!!

  254. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:10 pm

Number 17 needs his arse kicked after the game!

  255. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 7:11 pm

Pauoa, listening to the game on the radio,

Are the Refs really that bad?

  256. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:11 pm

Finally woo hoo nice pass Funaki TD BABY!!!

  257. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 7:11 pm

    TD!

  261. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 7:13 pm

    woo!
yay for washington! i’m glad for him.
    also funaki.
so do they put graunke in on the next series?

  262. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 7:13 pm

a real drive and a real TD!

  263. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:14 pm

Wow…and suddenly, a TD by the offense and the lead. Whew.

I’m not sure why Bobby thinks there’s a “platoon” system going on here. I think it’s almost a kind of live rep audition. Which of the two QBs can make it happen? Funaki has stepped up. As for Graunke…with his first-toss INT, we may well not see him for the rest of the game. Tough break, man.

  264. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:14 pm

WAC Refs have always been that bad…they are doing another stellar job tonight…

The game ain’t over so I expect a couple personal fouls, some false starts, a few holding penalties, maybe a phantom pass interference or running into the kicker penalty so stay tuned…

  265. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:15 pm

Kaepernick = quite possibly the most dangerous running QB that ever lived.

  266. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:16 pm

Lets go D stay home and stop biting

  267. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2008 7:16 pm

  268. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 7:16 pm

    someone hit Capernick!!!

  269. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 7:17 pm

    stay warm LizK!

  270. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 7:18 pm

Gameplan has the Nevada feed, that sucks.

Instead of faking to Mouton, they should have given it to him, would have been a first down. Oh, well, go Warriors. I think that Mouton idea is silly, we need him on defense.

    Defense and ST’s outstanding.

What is this new design? Graunke doesn’t look any better than Funaki, that was a bone headed interception.

After half time give the JC’s a chance already, can’t be any worse, nothing to lose.

I just love the D and ST’s today, fanastic job sofar.

Way to go Funaki, relax and concentrate.

Man, I can’t stand those Nevada announcers. All I get is Nevada sideline shots.

The Graunke story may end tonight.

I still would like to see the JC’s, for one series each at least, in the second half.

  271. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:19 pm

no chit somebody needs to lay him out and make him eat turf!

  272. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:20 pm

  273. sojuNtaegu October 25, 2008 7:21 pm

    dayum QB has long strides!

  275. TChahng [Pride] October 25, 2008 7:22 pm

Ryan “Iron Man” Mouton playing both ways!!! Cheehooo!

  276. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:24 pm

Kaepernick, is a freak, I want to see him get pounded so he can sit the rest of the night…

Defense playing nice and physical tonight I love it!

  277. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:24 pm

My bet’s on Funaki keeping the reins this series.

    And…yep! Well, keep trying Graunke!

  278. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:26 pm

Nice try but I don’t care too much for floating passes…

  279. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:26 pm

Or…is Graunke gonna be back? We can’t keep on with these 3-and-outs and wounded duck passes.

  280. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 7:28 pm

    BNS – Maybe next time….

FlaTed: I’m sure you didn’t mind the shot of the wet Nevada cheerleaders….

  281. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:28 pm

Good to hear Adam is back in. How’s Solly doing?

  291. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:41 pm

The Nevada play-action out of that pistol is dangerous…Kaepernick doing a good job throwing off the D…

    Good Job Adam and Fonoti

  300. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:47 pm

Graunke starts the next half, is my thinking. It’d be nice if we could just hold onto the lead until the half ends…

  301. NEO October 25, 2008 7:47 pm

UH is playing as hard as they can… I know we all support the team, but I think there are some here who support the team in a very strange way. Coach McMackin’s job isn’t easy… I trust him… If you do too, STAND UP!!! And now, I whoosh away, since my brother is sitting here and is reading over my shoulder… GO WARRIORS!!!

    NEO

  302. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:48 pm

Am I not being a true fan when I say Hawaii’s offense has been pretty much pathetic so far, apart from the touchdown?

  303. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:48 pm

    BIG D BIG D…

  304. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 7:50 pm

what is with kapernick’s red hands?

  305. BowsForever October 25, 2008 7:50 pm

    Whew. Nail-biter game.

  306. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:52 pm

The team is playing hard no doubt but the offense is playing dumb again…

This is Bull Shit and tells me even Coach has no faith in the offense…why not try to score before the half???

  307. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 7:53 pm

dang. so much for the offensive experimentation.
looks back to “normal” to me.

  308. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 7:54 pm

    47 yards of offense?

  309. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 7:56 pm

World Series still on – bottom of 9th, tied 4-4, runners on 1st & 3rd w/ no outs. Game in Philly. It’s 1:40 a.m. on the East Coast.

  310. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 7:58 pm

So far I haven’t seen any of the so-called changes on offense besides playing merry-go-round QB again and putting Mouton in the slot running around for nothing. I hate to say it but our defense is winning this game, offense needs to get there stuff together. Unless the defense holds Nevada scoreless it’s going to be a scary second half. Our second half play has been horrendous on offense this year. 6 points total for the year in second half play is the worst in college, 0 points in 4th qrtr too. Please, please Coach get the boys intensity up in the locker room and lets kick some Wolfpack @rse in the second half and protect the dayum hale!

  311. trevors dad October 25, 2008 7:59 pm

FIRE RON LEE NOW!!!!! what happened to the short stuff??? what is with all this long throws, and runs up the middle?? what happened to the slots, and having them get those YAC yards??? obviously, the pack defense is keeping Funaki in the pocket and bringing the heat from the outside…why doesn’t LEE ADJUST!!!! give creds to Funaki…he’s one tuff dude.

  312. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:01 pm

Coach Ron, open up the frikkin offensive playbook and stop being so frikkin conservative, we need to attack, try some trick plays or whatever obviously our normal offense is horrendous!

  313. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 8:02 pm

Phillies just won game 3 of the World Series 5-4.

  314. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 8:04 pm

    Phillies win 5-4!!

On the Warriors last drive, it was nice to see a couple of the cut-back patterns that Bess & Rivers were so good at. I’m not overly impressed with the play calling this season.

  315. 99club October 25, 2008 8:04 pm

    Philly wins!

  316. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:05 pm

    Thanks for the Phillies update…

What another great story it would be for another Hawai’i produced athlete this year in Shane Victorino if they win out the World Series…

  317. NEO October 25, 2008 8:06 pm

    Trevor’s Dad-

We can fire Coach Lee right now, and I expect to see your name on the listing for the next offensive coordinator. I thought this site and this blog was all about SUPPORT for the team… How can we support the team if we don’t support the coaches? I’m not trying to pick a fight, but I don’t think Coach Lee’s job is the easiest in the world, and I think he deserves our support. What’d ya say gang? Shall we “make memories?”

    Much aloha,
    AFOOFA,
    NEO

  318. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:06 pm

I know Coach Ron is better than that, WTF! Need to stop this conservative play-calling crap and attack.

  319. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:06 pm

    oh geez
    42 yards of offense.

  320. NEO October 25, 2008 8:10 pm

BTW, many congratulations to Solomon Elimimian for becoming Hawaii’s BEST TACKLER!!! 367 career tackles! GIT EM!!!!

  321. Postmanke October 25, 2008 8:10 pm

Mike Sanford when he gets fired at UNLV would make an excellent OC for us. I hope he and Mac know each other

  322. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:11 pm

i know we’re trying to take advantage of their bad pass defense, but they practice too. they know we’re gonna try that. we don’t need to try for the deep ball all the time.

  323. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:12 pm

    NEO,
I support the team and the coaches but stupidity I cannot stand. We are mid-season already and still making stupid play-calling on offense and being too conservative…seems like the coaches have no faith in the offense to play aggresively and attack the D. Trying to manage the clock has not worked cause our running game sucks cause the OLine can’t block for chit! Kealoha is out and the other backs haven’t done jack. The dayum Oline is killing us on offense…frikkin 26 sacks before this game and already gave up what 3 or 4 already… I hope they can get it going…

  324. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 8:13 pm

    Alexander starting Q3

  325. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 8:13 pm

    Alexander in the game.

  326. trevors dad October 25, 2008 8:14 pm

    hey neo

why don’t you just shut your mouth and call it like it is. yes, I’m an arm chair coach…or like to think I am…if i can see the problems why can’t LEE! you say give LEE a break…the defense is doing a great job…the special teams have greatly improved…and like I said Funaki is one tuff dude…so what’s left??? have the _alls and make the call.

  327. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:14 pm

    C’mon Alexander…your time to shine big man…

  328. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:15 pm

    wow
    who would’ve thought
alexander to mouton for a first down.

  329. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:15 pm

Here we go running the ball again…

    I give up…

  330. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:16 pm

Lets go Coach give Alexander a chance to throw the dayum ball

  331. Postmanke October 25, 2008 8:17 pm

    Alexander looks tired already

  332. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:19 pm

go for it Mack lets go!!!!

  333. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:20 pm

    Thank you Dan Kelly…

  334. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 8:20 pm

Our D is playing against two offenses, theirs and ours.

I’m a rabid Warrior fan, but we have to be able to call it as we see it. This offense is no offense. Just when I praise Funaki he throws another, completely bone headed, interception. He looks at the receiver, for what seemed like about a minute and than throws to him, surrounded be three defenders? Wtf?

Earlier in the game he could have run twice for first downs, with a wide open field in front of him, but instead he throws incomplete passes.

I hate to criticize, but it is just so frustrating to watch this offense, when everything else is working so well.

Can anybody tell me one logical reason not to try out both JC’s in the second half? Can they really be worse? The coach says they’re not ready? Hell, do either Funaki or Graunke look ready to anyone? What’s with Graunkes gut? Did he develop a belly or is that padding? I can’t tell.

Funaki just makes bad decisions, that’s a bigger problem than his accuracy.

COACH LEE, WHERE IS THE DAMNED SHORT STUFF ???? PLEASE, TRY IT, YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED HOW WELL IT WORKS !!!

Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to yell. Let’s hope our D and ST’s can pull this one out for us.

Sorry guys, I had to vent among friends, the frustration was getting to me a little.

  335. 99club October 25, 2008 8:20 pm

    Alright Dan!

  336. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:24 pm

WOW, here we go with the second half woes!!!

Dayumit, WHY!!!! C’MON BOYS THIS GAME IS 4 QTRS. NOT TWO!!!

  337. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:24 pm

    DAMMIT!!!!
    THERE’S GOTTA BE HOLDING THERE.

  338. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 8:25 pm

TD is BS – Someone was holding Satele’s jersey from the back. So obvious on the replay as the runner ran by him. Oye…..

Flated: How much coffee have you had tonight? Completely agree with your assessment.

  339. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:27 pm

hopefully their rb is too tired now for running all that distance.

  340. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:27 pm

    FloridaTed,
We all feel the frustration watching this offense this year… they are killing our awesome D by putting them on the field too long…

  341. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 8:27 pm

Monteilh was playing bullfighter on that TD.

  342. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:28 pm

WOW, wierd too think Mouton could be our best receiver too, what da heo?

  343. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 8:28 pm

  354. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:31 pm

Now that’s what the offense needs to do attack from all angles and stop being predictable! Nice job Farmer!

  355. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:32 pm

  371. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:46 pm

alexander, don’t run…. you’re not lean and quick like kaepernick. hand off or throw the ball! heh.

  372. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:46 pm

If the OLine can hold Alexander will get us in the endzone…his arm is lethal once that ball comes out…nice strong zip on the ball.

  373. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:47 pm

    play smart. play smart.

  374. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:47 pm

    So what gang

maybe Lee is reading this blog…short throws…quaterback that makes reads…runs…where appropriate. TOUCH DOWN!!!!! seems like Alexander has really grown since the Florida game.

  378. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 8:49 pm

  380. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 8:50 pm

Hi ya Liz – Hope you got a good view of that TD.

Sweet throw, good pass protection… Seems like old times this half.

  381. 22London October 25, 2008 8:51 pm

so let’s see if lee decides to go the running game to shorten the game or if we stay with the passing game….hell we should keep passing…Nev’s pass D is weak…

  382. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 8:52 pm

YEAH, BABEEEEEEE !!!! THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!

We look like a HAWAII OFFENSE again.

Man, that feels so good to see us play like that. I’m surprised, Alexander is actually quite fleet footed for a big guy. I hope we found our QB for this year. Alex, throw another touch down, maybe Rausch get chance too? lol.

    Now, defense, please hold’em.

    C’MON CROWD!!!!
    MAKE SOME NOISE!!!!

  387. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:58 pm

I can see why Nevada’s ground game is so dangerous though, that frikkin pistol crap can really throw off a D…especially with the play-action. Somebody needs to take a late hit penalty and knock Keapernick out! Oops did I say that out loud, mwhaha!

  388. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 8:58 pm

    Sweet!!!

  454. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 9:54 pm

    Yes, nice win…

Offense needs to keep attacking every game throw that conservative crap out the door Coach! Alexander played great and looks alot more comfortable in the offense now than from the beginning of the season. I’m glad he got his time to shine…he does have a strong arm!

  455. las vegas October 25, 2008 9:55 pm

    No QB controversy.
    Coaches decision.
    Run and shoot=GA
    Hybrid offense=IF

  456. wafan October 25, 2008 9:57 pm

I wonder if the conservative play we see is more a function of the ability of the personnel. If this is true then the coach is not at fault.

  457. not far away anymore October 25, 2008 9:58 pm

There isn’t any QB controversy. The only controversy would be if Greg Alexander sits on the bench again next week. Great game Warriors.

  458. BowsForever October 25, 2008 9:59 pm

    17/22, 200+ yards, 2 TDs…great game, Greg!

  459. Rich2176 October 25, 2008 9:59 pm

Nice job by all. GA with several clutch plays! D Line and linebackers solid as always. The secondary manages to get burned every game. Tighten it up guys! Great Win!

  460. wafan October 25, 2008 10:00 pm

Hi Las Vegas! Have not seen you in a while. I hope all is well with you and the boss!!!

  461. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2008 10:00 pm

    QB’s…

I believe Graunke is done for the season, or only used for mop up duty…

Funaki and Alexander will finish out the season 1 and 2 respectively. Where is Rausch?

    Running Backs…

    Kealoha is greatly missed…
    Libre is so/so…
    LWJ is proving absolutely nada…
Why is Rego not in the game???

  462. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:01 pm

Good interview with Lane. Coach Mack, I hope that laptop you (reportedly) chucked still works…but hey, it worked!

What a game!!!! Nothing is easy for the Warriors, so far this year, but it will pay off for the second half of this year. Caught the last 3 minutes of the game and thanks to everyone for the comments! Now I can have a great night!! Imua Warriors!

I wonder if the conservative play we see is more a function of the ability of the personnel. If this is true then the coach is not at fault.

I disagree, this is a kick in the nuts to the players on offense cause it shows lack of confidence in your offense. Not only that, you can see that when we attack the D with our short passes and quick outs we move down field. This running the ball 2-3 times in a row is retarded! We have weapons on offense they just need to be put in a position to make plays…

We would be able to run and play conservative if we had an Oline that could sustain blocks for longer than 1 or 2 dayum seconds!

  465. wafan October 25, 2008 10:08 pm

Right. Coach Mack is a nice guy. Which player said he did not want to get the coach upset? HA!

That is the sign of a good teacher – judicious use of thespian and oratory skills.

Plus wins for Weber State and the Phillies today…

  475. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 10:23 pm

    Man-o-man, Tsaikos, Tsaikos, Tsaikos,

I”M SO DAMNED PROUD OF THESE GUYS !!!!!!!

Alexander played better then I ever expected. This guy is not slow, he just looks like it, because he’s so big, but he can run. He shocked the s..t out of Nevada a few times, including me, especially with the last and super crucial first down. That touchdown after was so sweet, it went down like honey. He should have the game ball.

Welcome back, offense, amazing. Just change a few chess pieces and Bam !!!

Mouton is amazing, his draft stock went up a few notches, after this game.

  476. Garret October 25, 2008 10:23 pm

Special teams was a HUGE part of this win. I’m so happy that the adjustments made on the return teams paid off so well. Bain’s returns were much better than what UH had before this game and the kickoff return scheme was much better and led to some solid returns by Lane.

The biggest contributor on special teams was the punt team, led by Grasso’s perfectly placed kicks. It could be argued that the punt team won the game for UH. I couldn’t understand why the Nevada returner kept failing to fair catch the kicks and get their team to start on the 10 instead of starting inside the 5 yard line.

Nevada’s offense actually had a very good rate of success on drives that started outside of the 10 yard line. Thankfully, Grasso pinned them deep time after time. Not only did that help the D out, but it set up the offense for some scoring opportunities.

  477. Garret October 25, 2008 10:27 pm

Alexander had an excellent game, and the team could not have won without his high level of play. He was much more mobile than advertised, and really was on target in this game. The OL let the rush through so many times and he was able to scramble to buy time for a receiver to get open and to gain yards when needed. Without his scrambling, UH has to punt on the final drive and the game is either in OT or Nevada wins in regulation.

I’m a HUGE Inoke fan but I’m guessing that Alexander will start the next game.

One thing to consider in this game is that Nevada has one of the best run defenses in the country (top 5 in the country I believe) and a HORRIBLE pass D. So, their D was much more vulnerable to a QB like Alexander than a QB like Inoke.

Tyler did NOT look good on either of his drives…not just his INT, but his passes in his first drive were off.

  478. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:28 pm

Special teams is really getting it done, just when we need it most.

When’s the replay, by the way?

  479. Garret October 25, 2008 10:30 pm

The only thing I’m not sure about with the changes was using Mouton at slot receiver. Mouton definitely is good there, but his speed and cover ability on D was missed. There were a few big plays by Nevada that I wondered if Mouton could have chased the guy down…

Even if Mouton is better than Bain at slot receiver, I’m not sure that the upgrade there is greater than the dropoff with Mouton missing most of the plays on D. Maybe in the Nevada game that is fine because they don’t throw the ball much, but against a team like NMSU that might not work out as well…

  480. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:32 pm

Graunke is still down right now. His hand injury must not have been an easy one to heal from, and he still needs more reps, it seems. He’ll probably get another chance next game if Coach Mack’s remarks are anything to go by. As for Alexander, he’s a great fien. It’s kinda refreshing to get a linebacker-size, big-armed QB who’s not afraid to run and is harder to bring down. Now that I think about it, when was the last time we ever _had_ a QB quite like Alexander?

  481. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:33 pm

Alexander was a great find, I meant to say.

  482. Garret October 25, 2008 10:33 pm

This win sets up UH for the Hawaii Bowl. The two road games are definitely winnable, and the team has the momentum now that should last them through these two weeks. I hope that the fans show up in 3 weeks to support the Warriors for their finishing kick…that game could be the one that officially clinches the Hawaii Bowl spot!

  483. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:34 pm

Garret – this might’ve been a deviation from the norm. The original plan was for Mouton to make appearances from time to time on offense.

  484. sjmacro October 25, 2008 10:36 pm

replay is at 10-1 tomorrow K5–can’t wait

  485. Garret October 25, 2008 10:37 pm

Aside from garbage time, I don’t see Tyler getting many reps for awhile. He’s not healthy and the team needs wins. More importantly, the coaches have to plan for next season and Tyler won’t be here then. Every rep that Alexander and Inoke get (I would throw in Rausch too, but since hasn’t even gotten many practice reps, I don’t think he’ll play much this season) will help them build for next season and get them in sync with the WRs like Salas that will be with them next season.

  486. Garret October 25, 2008 10:39 pm

Oops, I forgot about the bye week–I hope that the fans show up in 4 weeks for the Idaho game at Aloha Stadium. Assuming that the road games go well, the Idaho game should give the Warriors their 7th win and clinch the Hawaii Bowl spot.

  487. Garret October 25, 2008 10:40 pm

    Bowsforever,

I understand that Mouton being at slot receiver full time might not be a permanent move…since Nevada’s strength on offense and weakness on D set up perfectly for using Mouton on offense instead of defense. However, I wouldn’t like this to be a permanent change, but I trust the coaches to figure out what is best for the team.

  488. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:41 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the Funaki-Alexander combo. Let’s keep this up the rest of the season. Heck, maybe we can carry this on for _next_ season!

  489. Garret October 25, 2008 10:42 pm

By the way, I saw at least 5 cases where the UH OL was holding pretty clearly, with two of those cases *really* blatant to me. For all those who were posting during the game and complaining about the refs, I think that the refs were at least even towards UH…I actually think that UH got the benefit of being the home team on some of the calls or non-calls.

  490. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:44 pm

I need to see me that 58-yard field goal by Fresno State to win the game against Utah State. That is some crazy stuff (the field goal and the close score). No looking past the “bottom” of the WAC, Warriors!

  491. BowsForever October 25, 2008 10:46 pm

The O-line still has discipline problems, it seems. But at least the penalty situation is improving — it was really nice to only have 10 penalty yards int he first half!

  492. Amazed... October 25, 2008 10:52 pm

Just wanted to say that I’m amazed how many people are ripping Coach Mack and Coach Lee. I know it was mentioned earlier, but Hawaii did lose arguably the best offensive unit (skill positions) we’ll ever have (Brennan, Grice-Mullins, Bess, Rivers, and Hawthorne) and went without who most believed would be the starting quarterback during summer drills due to “academics.” Realistically, everyone in the state should have known that this is a rebuilding year and making it to a bowl game would be a feat in itself with the schedule that we have to go through. We are about 2/3 way through the season and are at 4-4. Yes, we could easily have been 5-3 (with the disappointing loss to SJSU), but I think we are at a good place right now. Wouldn’t most people agree that just looking at our schedule on paper and looking at our roster that we’d be at 4-4 right now. Yes, our wins may not look very pretty, but a win is a win. You don’t get any extra points for style.

Anyways, just trying to say that you’d be foolish to believe that we should be leading the nation in total offense and have either 5 or 6 wins by now. It’s growing pains and I think we all got a little too spoiled with the success that UH went through the last two years.

  493. wafan October 25, 2008 10:52 pm

    Pauoa Boy . . .

I believe it shows neither a lack of respect nor a blow to the testis. If the players are able to perform only to a particular level then the calls can only be to that skill level with occasional play calling at a raised level to challenge them and the opponent. Yet, their play calling and their success in execution of the play is suspect.

Understand, I realize your frustrations and concerns as I feel the same. It seems the coaches have sat on the lead and tried to protect the lead rather than run their offense to put the other team away. And, I do not understand stretching the field or running the ball when the personnel is incapable of ensuring success against the opposition. Perhaps it is to set up a particular play fpr later in the game. But why confound yourself and your fans with what appears to be poor play selection and execution?

While I do not believe the Warriors to be of a lower skills level the coaches are responsible for making the calls. It is our responsibility to support the team as well as the coaches. Yes, we are free to question and criticize (because of the sacrifices made by you, your colleagues and predecessors); but, we are neither on the field at practices nor the game, and are not privy to the inside information as it regards personnel issues in terms of physical preparedness.

I tend to view situations in as positive a light as possible – a “flaw” of my personality and teaching style perhaps. I would surmise your teaching style to vary but equally effective for what you do.

If you believe I choose to view their decisions and calls through rose-colored glasses, so be it.

Two different opinions. Same goals – another Warrior victory and a bowl game win!!!

Great game! Alexander was awesome. I’m so glad the coaches decided to give him another try. He can actually run the offense. Funaki is a great guy, but I think Alexander is going to be our man. If it not for those two pass interference calls, I don’t think Funaki would have led us on TD drive. We just can move the ball with him. I think we had zero or one first downs in the first quarter. It was great to see someone who can make the throws, instead of someone who is just throwing up for grabs on a lot of his throws.
I hope this win gets UH back on track. I would love to see them make it to the Bowl game.
    Awesome game.

  502. Hank October 25, 2008 11:25 pm

    ….Congratulations WARRIORS!

    – love the guts that Alexander showed. He surprised me with his moves. He can be accurate if given some time.

    – Elimimian…great game…love those big hits. Best tackler in UH history.

-Nice move having Mouton play receiver. His speed and playmaking abilities shook things up.

-Brashton Satele continues to impress…is it jus me or has he improved his strength by a ton this year?

-Fonoti had a break out game….

-Good job by Bain as punt returner…we needed a step up there.

-Coaching was crucial in this game – the adjustments and changes they made before and during the game was a crucial factor (IMHO)….Nevada is a talented team.

-nice call by Coach Ron to go to the end zone on the winning TD…

    -big big Big win……

-bring on Utah State – GO WARRIORS!

Just finished watching the game off of tivo. Too bad ESPN picked up the Nevada feed. The announcers weren’t too bad though. You can’t ask for too much else out of a football game. The D was solid, except for when they completely broke down on those two TD runs. Special teams still keeping up the intensity. O-line is lost. Alexander has an arm.

ST, you have a typo in your 1st paragraph. Nevada never got to 34.

  506. FloridaTed October 25, 2008 11:45 pm

We better watch out for UtahState. They have become dangerous. Fresno was very lucky to escape with a win on a last second, monsterous field goal. Idaho is also coming alive, beating NMSU. There will be no pushovers left on our schedule.

But I’ll savor this win for awhile. The day day the offense returned.

A win is a win…for lack of saying this was a great win…

Great to see Alexander perform especially in the clutch.

Horrible to see the clock management. I know i know i know we fans should not be coaching from the couch but…..Why are we sitting on the ball with a 7 point lead with like 11mins left in the 4th?…I might have been watching another game but Nevada is pretty darn explosive with a couple touchdowns coming from One Play Runs?….
Timeout called after running the clock down 10 seconds? What the heck happened with that last time out we called…looked like no one knew what was going on….coaching?

that was messy…maybe it was because of the rain. bleh haha

BUUUUT a win is a win, more than I expected.

Three punts inside the 5 really helped the D.
Thought they’d play Mouton on O but not that much. He wasn’t on the field when Nevada made their two long r
uns. No one on D was fast enough to catch them.
Alexander was strong enough to escape several sacks to make some positive yds. The O line has to step it up a little more.
Calling their last timeout after calling one on the play before was questionable. They had no way to stop the clock in case of a bad snap or sack.
The game showed still have a lot to work on but also showed they have a lot to build on.

It has taken the team awhile to play 4 qtrs, but tonight was a huge improvement. They are starting to look like a team which is a plus and hopefully there will be more pluses in games to come. Congratulations to the Warriors.

On the other side, it was great to watch the game with Nalani, Kaipo, and Duffer. Since Kaipo lives here on Maui, we will see if he can make it to more games with us. Also saw Nalani’s son on the sidelines with the team and briefly saw his brother in Vii’s band. Nalani and Kaipo, thanks for joining us and look forward to seeing both of you at another Warrior game.

  517. Jason October 26, 2008 12:59 am

Dang, I’m not sure that this is official, but James’ entry was pretty dang close to perfect:

    Total Tackles: 62 (vs. 63)
    Tie Breaker 1: 9.5 (vs. 10.0)
Tie Breaker 2: Solly (perfect match)

al: I told my friend after the Weber State game, you NEVER leave early. He stayed throughout the LaTech game, but he left early tonight with his girlfriend (another friend of mine, and a Moanalua grad). Tsk tsk, I’m going to have to yell at him when I see him at lunch on Tuesday. 🙂

I think when people start criticizing the coaches for playcalling, they need to first put themselves into the coaches’ shoes. Try to think why they are making those calls, don’t just think about your own personal mindset of what you would do if you were the coach. If you think about it like the coaches think about it, you gain more of a respect for what it is they do, why they do it, and how it can be improved. I’m finding that to be very true every time I go in for the Nā Koa lunches when Mack (or Miano, or Lumpkin, or Aranda) breaks down the film. I’m gaining a lot of insights into this coaching staff’s philosophy, their points of emphasis, and their detailed examination of every play. But even if you don’t have the privilege to attend every Monday, I think all of us armchair coaches can learn a lot more by thinking about the game in this philosophy. Rather than getting all rash and angry as the game unfolds, keep a cool head and study it throughout. You’ll see the big picture better, and from there scrutinize with greater detail and greater clarity.

I guess in the end, what I’m saying is this — at the beginning of the season, I wasn’t quite sure about the makeup of this coaching staff. Not that I thought they couldn’t do the job, but there were some question marks. As I’ve come to study what the team is doing, however, I’ve gained confidence in the players and the coaches. And I believe, in the same way, the players have confidence in the coaches. Now, I feel like they are all on the same path to victory together, and that we as fans need to be on that same path too. We can’t get all caught up in our own ideas of what’s best for this team. The fact is, this team has a leader in Greg McMackin, and we need to follow his lead. Yeah, he’s going to make mistakes along the way, but as long as we consider them with a level-head rather than rash anger and frustration, then I think we can all say we’re behind the Warriors.

Thanks to WassupDoc and Dr. Doc for the ride home.

Okay, I took care of the things that needed taking care of (including a nice HOT shower), and now I’m off to bed. Good night, all. Great win for our Warriors tonight! 🙂

listening to the post game interviews…….

malcolm lane tells of how coach mack got his team to come out fired up after the half. he used a laptop for emphasis.

tossing it against the floor or wall. anyway, he obviously meant to and did break the laptop in the process. and it did to a man get them pumped up to play well in the second half. something we haven’t done even when we have won.

let’s see now we need at least 6 more laptops to finish the season.

  528. Committed Road Warrior October 26, 2008 2:35 am

It’s 5:15am here in the desert and I just finished watching a replay of the game. Unbelievable!!!!!

I can’t believe I wasted my Saturday night going with my neighbors to watch Arizona State get blown up by Oregon…..so I had to wait until I got back from that game (which was about midnight) to watch the UH/Nevada game. The Hawaii IPTV television box had the game up about an hour and a half after I got home, so I had to hold out and not lurk the blogs or sports sites until now. I certainly didn’t want to spoil the outcome by seeing it early.

That said, there was remarkable improvement in special teams and QB/WR play. In my opinion, it would be a travesty if Alexander doesn’t get playing time in the weeks to come, whether it be by start or platooning it again like we did tonight. The offensive tackles are still getting burned, especially the right side from what I see. I can tell Alexander will be lethal if the O-Line can give him enough time to let the receiver routes develop.

Was this the first time this year we had a receiver catch for 100-yds (Washington)?

Any who, great win for the Warriors! Off to sleep.

Football is entertainment. Our Warrior team has been fun to watch win, or lose. Coach Mack, as long as we have Coach Ron calling the plays we will have an interesting game to watch every weekend.
