Game Day: Cincinnati

So, I was trying to get comments from each senior this week, but finally had to abandon the project because, well, there were too many of them. (With laziness being my compass, I asked Mack to comment on each one.)
That meant I had a lot of leftover notes, including the announcement that the Solo Soljahs will continue.
Wuh?
Apparently a group of special-teams-related players banded together four years ago. The original members include Jake Ingram, Dane Porlas, Keao Monteilh, Mike Malala, Ryan Keomaka, Guyton Galdeira, Karl Noa and Bully Fergestrom.
After this season, none of the original members will be active Warrior players.
“We passed it down,” Ingram said, noting that Josh Rice, Cory Paredes and Jayson Rego are taking over leadership.
Ingram said associate head coach Rich Miano also is a member.
With the season ending with the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, punter Tim Grasso remains hopeful of gaining membership.
“I’m an applicant,” Grasso said.
Ingram said: “The only way to get in is for the founding fathers to approve.”
The group, whose activities remain a secret, even flashes its own hand signs.
“Superman stole their S sign,” Grasso said in a kiss-okole attempt for membership.
Ingram said, with a smile: “Super Cr3w copied us.”

Game day BABY!!! Go get ’em Warriors! Leave NO DOUBT!!

I already have the TVs at the bar set for the game. They know who I rep at the hotel. By they way, last night we had the 49ers Holiday Party at the hotel (we’re down the block from the headquarters) and boy I never served more food in my life. Especially for a party of 300. Didn’t get to see Jeff but saw Isaac. Brah reppin the poly garb. Wished I took pics with him but I was “working”. Anyway…he said he’ll be watching the game from their hotel room (they play the Jets on Sunday) and hopes we kick their okole. Just wanted to share with ya’ll!

    Go WARRIORS BABY!!!

Hope the imu is ready for some BearCat, today.

    Heard it’s kind of gamey…
Chewy …stringy…and tough in some parts,
But, if you beat em.. pound em… lomi lomi and wrap em up good
You can mince em.. dice em.. and cook em up good.
The parts that are still kind of tough?
    Eh.. just spit em up.

    Serve while hot!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Snow hanging around out there? Maybe we will get some on this side of the hill next week or two.

  21. madeinhawaii December 6, 2008 8:28 am

    curveball,

I know it’s tough but hang in there. Kristen much aloha from Estelle and me. Our prayers are with you and your family. Be strong and fight on. When Estelle went in for her surgery and treatment three years ago, one of the first thoughts I had was how lucky I felf to be have been the one chosen to take care of such a wonderful woman. I still feel that way. So, I’m betting curveball feels just about the same way right now — concerned, but proud, and feeling all the love. So, Kristen, don’t worry too much about how your hubby and family are dealing with what’s happening … You just focus on fighting the good fight and getting better one breath at a time.

    dj . . .

Strange year for weather so far. We usually have had a bunch of hard freezes by now.

When I was in B’ham it would normally dump a bunch of inches on Thanksgiving — enough to go sledding on the streets.

chawan_cut, I recognized that with the Navy team. Choke local connections on that team.

  36. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 9:06 am

    Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Gameday is always fun, a lot of nervous energy in my gut, but this 61 year old gut tells me we’re gonna win this darn thing and make the Nation sit up and take notice.

Should we win the next two games, a very high probability, we may even be pre-season ranked, or at least close to it, next year.

When I see the growth from the start of this season to now, I couldn’t be more encouraged for our long term future.

    Go, Warriors, make us proud.

  37. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:20 am

Hmmmm, Coach Mac quoted in Advertiser:

“I don’t want to make a big deal of the BCS thing,” UH head coach Greg McMackin said. “I don’t know how (the UH players) are treating it. I’m treating it like it’s another ball game.

Coach Mac quoted in ESPN article”

“This is our BCS game,” coach Greg McMackin said. “We want to redeem ourselves against a good team.”

    wonder what changed his mind?

  38. A-House December 6, 2008 9:21 am

  47. bb December 6, 2008 10:00 am

Nevada coaching staff also at the game last night. Not sure who they were scoping out.

Cincinnati coaching staff was also represented at Club RockZa. Cool guys–I believe it was their QB Coach and D-Line Coach. They said that if the game gets out of hand by end of the first half they are going to pull their starters. Plus they don’t want it to get like the last UH/Cincinnati game with the fight and all–esp. on ESPN. They seemed more concerned and would rather throw all their marbles with the BCS Bowl than the game here.

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2008 10:04 am

Army’s getting lickens! I blame their uniforms.

  49. al December 6, 2008 10:07 am

  50. Kazz December 6, 2008 10:09 am

Coach Miano and Coach Malloe were also in attendance. I ran into them during halftime and wished them the best for today.

  78. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 2:41 pm

At least it was a game that actually lived up to the hype, a good heavy weight fight.

Alabama is still a very young team, they’ll be back next year, more seasoned, just like the Warriors.

  79. wafan December 6, 2008 3:00 pm

    Dang!

  86. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 4:14 pm

    Postmanke,

There’s some talk about Notre Dame coming here, but I believe that when I see it, especially if Hawaii beats Cinci today.

Our best hope for a good Bowl would be Arizona.

  87. wafan December 6, 2008 4:33 pm

I sure hope “someone” shoots the entire Senior Walk from start to finish!

35 seniors at once; all taking their bows. Whoo-hoo!!!

Watching ASU-UA duke it out for the Territorial Cup awaiting the UH-Cincy game.

I’ve got the sniffles, or else I’d be down in Tucson right now attending that game. Brother lives ~1/2 mile from Arizona Stadium so would have gone to his place to watch the UH game.

Tailgate sounds like its good. Ronnie and Rob show? Would have been interested in seeing that. 🙂

  91. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 4:53 pm

Use to rubber stoppers! Uncork once every hour or two to drain.

I recommended last year using a wet/dry vacuum.

If you do not have a wet/dry vacuum I have several other options.

  100. Hoohiki December 6, 2008 5:32 pm

Thanks Hawaiianbod. I remember when the matches were televised. Remembered the upset of USC in 2006. With technology and forward thinking, money comes first and us fans last.

  101. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 5:32 pm

Floodgates starting to open in ASU-UA game. Wildcats just returned the punt for a TD.

Big 12 CG pretty much decided barring some cataclysmic comeback in the 4th quarter (to come).

    CRW . . .

They have those little tea pot looking things that rinse your sinuses out. I tried it once. Thought I was drowning. But, I have friends who swear by it.

If you have a really good friend. And, I mean a really good friend. You could get a straw and . . .

    Well, you get the idea.

  108. wafan December 6, 2008 5:55 pm

    LizK . . .

I know you are very talented. But, how did you bend your photo of everyone?

Kind of looks like a time warp or speed of light thing. HA!

  109. wafan December 6, 2008 6:01 pm

Looks like the weather will be beautiful for the game and the Senior Walk. That is a good thing!

  110. wafan December 6, 2008 6:03 pm

The UDub finishes with a perfect season!

  111. wafan December 6, 2008 6:04 pm

What the heck was that at the ASU/UA game? A head-to-toe green Spandex (?) outfit. Did not look like it had eyeholes. HA!

    Green?

  112. wafan December 6, 2008 6:06 pm

Last year UH ran the table. This year the table fell on UW.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Geez. The last hour has been dragging.

  113. wafan December 6, 2008 6:08 pm

    Anyone out there?

I guess everyone is at the T-Gate — well, except for the off-island Tsai-ko’s.

  114. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 6:15 pm

    Thanks, wafan.

I’ve heard about those teapot thingys.

  115. Bulla December 6, 2008 6:16 pm

    aloha tsaikos,

weber state lost today, but it has been one heck of a ride! the beast did not play, high ankle sprain left him at 60% at best, so the trainer would not let him suit up. 24-13 was the final, and even though he didn’t play, the radio announcers mentioned that the lack of ‘the beast’ was very obvious and Montana made their adjustments…….whew, wait til next year!

Missoula is an unreal place to play, 25k rabid fans, loud, and i mean louder than 50k at Aloha…what an experience, and they are rabid fans….wow.

thanks for the prayers, thanks for the support, the beast will be back by the end of the week, cattle call next week, he’ll be hungry.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  116. Bulla December 6, 2008 6:17 pm

anyway for a live feed for the game tonight?

  117. wafan December 6, 2008 6:20 pm

    Bulla . . .

    ESPN, I think.

  118. wafan December 6, 2008 6:21 pm

    Bulla . . .

    Make that ESPN2.

  119. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 6:24 pm

    UH-Cincy game on the Deuce.

  120. wafan December 6, 2008 6:24 pm

Sorry to hear about Weber’s loss. It is a good thing the Beast did not play if he was injured. No use in taking the chance of a severe life-long injury. Better to heal up and get ready for next year.

  121. Postmanke December 6, 2008 6:25 pm

I always look forward to the last football game of the season.. my first last game memory.

1982 vs Nebraska – Niko Noga pancaking Dave Remington. Almost pulling off the upset until Turner Gill checked into the game.

  122. Postmanke December 6, 2008 6:26 pm

1997 vs Notre Dame – Tim Carey almost pulling off the upset – last second field goal.. that was sick but great game!

  148. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 6:52 pm

Tessitore and Gilmore calling the game on TV. I think these guys called the Boise game earlier this year.

  149. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 6:53 pm

    Interception with flag

  150. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 6:54 pm

    Offsetting penalties. Good for Cincy.

  151. Rand da Fan December 6, 2008 6:55 pm

I’m watching the game on ESPN2 in Kaneohe right now… Check it out my fellow fans.

  152. 99club December 6, 2008 6:55 pm

  154. 99club December 6, 2008 6:58 pm

    CRW-
Things are good…cold beer and the Warriors on TV.

De La Hoya does a ‘no mas’ before the 8th round…Pacquiao wins.

  155. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 6:59 pm

Liz, is the play clock still haywire?

Cincy tries for the 53 yd FG and is good.

  156. 99club December 6, 2008 7:00 pm

That was a knuckle ball kick…wow.

  157. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:00 pm

3 for cinci. Let’s go, WARRIORS!!!!

  158. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:02 pm

I have no problems seeing Cincy kick FGs all night. Better than giving up TDs.

  159. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 7:02 pm

Sofar the Big East Refs are amazingly fair, I must say.

Defense needs to play a lot tighter.

  160. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:02 pm

    Playclock is working now.

  161. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 7:03 pm

Offensive Line needs to play a little bit wider, their DE’s come around too easy.

  162. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:07 pm

    Wow! What a punt!

  163. 99club December 6, 2008 7:07 pm

    Great punt baby!

  164. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:07 pm

Play calling !!!! What are we? a running team? come on, lets play to win. 3 runs and a punt!

  165. 99club December 6, 2008 7:09 pm

    Ted-
That DE is just a beast. I have no idea why we ran at him on that one.

  166. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:10 pm

If we are going to run it would be better to run QB draws GA will get it done.

  167. kymrykauai December 6, 2008 7:12 pm

Hey lizk, which section r u in? We couldn’t ask ask for better weather and isn’t the stadium rocking?!?! This is awesome.opho warriors!
99 club mahalo for update on the fight my whole section was interested in that news!:

  168. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:12 pm

    99club.

the other DE is another Beast

  169. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 7:13 pm

What’s with Alexander’s Jersey? He got that hole last week on his sleeve. Does he have only one shirt? Nobody could fix it? Pretty weird.

  170. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:13 pm

Grasso rocks! Dee! 12rh man rocks. Cinci gets a 1st down on a nice pass.

  171. d1shima(tilted) December 6, 2008 7:13 pm

nelms was in the 2nd series.
    RB can’t help both ot’s
    Barwin is unleashed.
So much for Cincy “disciplining” Nelms for his arrest

  172. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:16 pm

    End of the first quarter.
    3-0 Cincy. Bearcats driving.

Not too bad so far. Could be better on UH’s part. Hopefully things can improve as the game progresses……hopefully.

  173. wafan December 6, 2008 7:16 pm

    Come on Warriors!!!

  174. wafan December 6, 2008 7:19 pm

Thanks for the pix LizK. The green and white sides look pretty good!

Yay — looks like people are starting to understand.

  175. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:19 pm

End of 1Q and down 3-0. Not bad. But the play calling suc*s. Defense needs a turn over and we need the offense to play to win.

  176. wafan December 6, 2008 7:20 pm

    bhf2’s banner featured on ESPN2!!!

    Bravo!

  177. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:20 pm

I can see those big boys getting tired 2nd half

  178. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:21 pm

keep it close D, keep it close…

  179. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:21 pm

Cincy has gotta be controlling the time of possession so far.

  180. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:22 pm

    INT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  181. wafan December 6, 2008 7:22 pm

    Interception!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  182. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:22 pm

d did their job, now the Offense needs to do better. NOW

  183. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:22 pm

Cinci brought a cheer squad and mascot. We have green and white cheer stix in the respective sections. It’s cool and breezy in the stadium.

BG called for a TO and got it!

  184. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:23 pm

    thanks lizk,

offense gotta show up…adjust to the coverage

  185. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:24 pm

These commentators will nto stop talking about Cincy unless we take the lead in this game. Nice catch by Bain.

  186. wafan December 6, 2008 7:28 pm

    I agree about the commentators.

These visitors are homers. For Cincinatti, that is.

    Bulla . . .

You find a TV with ESPN2?

  187. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:28 pm

Offense is offensive right now. Not adjusting to the dogs, and not taking advantage of the openings left by the blitzing LB/DB.

  188. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:29 pm

I have the TV on mute.

Our offense has gotta find a way to stay on the field longer. Cincy is gonna run all over us in the second half if they control the T.O.P. like they are right now.

  189. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:29 pm

Next possession we should be going taking shots over top. enuff setting up the plays.. unleash!

  190. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 7:31 pm

Our offense is playing too uptight, they need to just play and loosen up.

Come on, coaches, give them a better play selection, don’t play not to lose again.

  191. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:31 pm

    wafan

no, i am rolling with 1420 and RK and BC….kind of boring so far…3 to zero is not much to write home about

  192. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:31 pm

Kymry- I got Betty’s seat in red M 30 yd line.

  193. 99club December 6, 2008 7:32 pm

Somehow I don’t think we’ll see any passing on this drive from Cincy.

  194. 99club December 6, 2008 7:33 pm

    OK…one pass. 🙂

  195. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:33 pm

cincy is going to roll over us if we cannot take control of the game. they’re playing seniors already and it is only the 2nd quarter? c’mon, let’s go Warriors!!!

  196. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:34 pm

the O line for Cinci is not that good long term. they will run out of gas. If they were a stock I’d sell

  197. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:34 pm

D-line is getting pushed around. 54 yards just running the ball. Just smash mouth football. I can’t figure out why they decided to throw? But thank you!!!! I think he’ll miss.

  198. wafan December 6, 2008 7:35 pm

    Bulla . . .

If you want a game DVD let me know.

    BRAVO to Sol!!!

  199. 99club December 6, 2008 7:35 pm

    That’s a Senior moment!

  200. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:35 pm

#17 good job! let’s finish this and capitalize on the blocked punt

  201. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:36 pm

before you can say momentum…..there goes the momentum

  202. wafan December 6, 2008 7:36 pm

    Dang. Gave it right back.

  203. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:36 pm

Kymry- I got Betty’s seat in red M 30 yd line.

    PICK IT uP!

  204. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:38 pm

our D is on the field way too long… this is not good

  205. 99club December 6, 2008 7:38 pm

I didn’t see who he was throwing to…it looked like he was winding up for a long one…

  206. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:39 pm

We new seats in the stadium.. not looking good in HD

  207. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:39 pm

    Moment.
    Dang.

    🙂

  208. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:40 pm

I think Lee was done setting up plays.. and was going for the home run

  209. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:41 pm

    whew,
    let’s go boyz

  210. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:42 pm

Postmanke. Seats should be filled, yah?
The no need new ones 🙂

  211. wafan December 6, 2008 7:42 pm

    2nd and goal.

    Come on D!

  212. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:42 pm

    underwhelming at best….on the 6 yd line….ouch

  213. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:43 pm

Cincy’s gotta settle for another FG.

  214. wafan December 6, 2008 7:44 pm

Pike getting yelled at by the coach.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Screwed up with the quick snap count, I guess.

  215. Bulla December 6, 2008 7:44 pm

    cmon

  216. wafan December 6, 2008 7:45 pm

    IDIOT!

  217. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:45 pm

Scratch on the FG. Penalty yields them a TD.

  218. wafan December 6, 2008 7:46 pm

    That cost us 4 points.

  219. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:46 pm

    Scoreboard is screwy. 13-0 ???

  220. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 7:48 pm

Ok gotta save battery for something worthy to say.

  221. matto December 6, 2008 7:49 pm

sigh.. unnecessary penalty = 7 points

  222. Buffoman December 6, 2008 7:49 pm

Okay, I’ve been on the o-line for a while now. Is it just me or is our o-line just not doing it?

  223. wafan December 6, 2008 7:50 pm

One yard deep in the endzone. Why run it out?

On top of that a penalty to move them back. Geez!

  224. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:50 pm

Sort of dissapointed with the crowd. #13 team in the country and we can’t fill the stands. Besides that we are playing sloppy, undisciplined. We need a sustained drive right now.

  225. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 7:50 pm

Well, I guess the Big Yeast Refs are showing their true colors. They can’t score, so, just give them a touch down, damned cheaters.

  226. Postmanke December 6, 2008 7:52 pm

I dont like the Green with White side.. looks stupid

  227. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 7:53 pm

They should sell half the tickets in the student section, the empty seats in a prime area is a disgrace, no sell out also. Wish I could be there.

  228. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 7:58 pm

Is it just me or is more time being bled off than is needed (ie: calling a TO but a second still runs off, etc.)

  229. hawnstln December 6, 2008 7:59 pm

    Is that Pilares??

  230. 99club December 6, 2008 7:59 pm

2 shots at the end zone and then kick if no make ’em.

  231. hawnstln December 6, 2008 8:01 pm

    nice score!!!!!!

  232. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 8:01 pm

    FG Hawai’i.

    10-3.

  233. wafan December 6, 2008 8:01 pm

    Yay Kelly!!!

  234. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 8:03 pm

    Halftime.

UH gets the ball to start the second half.

  235. Postmanke December 6, 2008 8:05 pm

Perfect! TV truck idling nicely in the middle of the Cinci Bench.. hope the driver is revving the engine.. good dose of carbon monoxide

  236. 99club December 6, 2008 8:06 pm

    CRW-
You’re right about the time management…should’ve spiked before taking the second timeout since the clock stopped with the first down on that great pass. But we did get some pts out of the deal…

  237. matto December 6, 2008 8:08 pm

good half, D… offense is finding themselves…

    keep em off-kilter!!!

and is it me, or a) are the spots pretty generous on the cincy side and b) has anyone ever seen the ‘jumping on a player’ penalty called before, esp on a special teams kick???? esp when the player is playing the ball????

  238. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 8:09 pm

$2M scholarship Koa Anuenue donation at halftime.
    🙂

The good news is that the Cinci Offense will be too tired to score. Bwahahaha!

  239. 99club December 6, 2008 8:13 pm

Oklahoma broke Hawaii’s regular season NCAA record of 656 pts in a season with 702.

  240. Postmanke December 6, 2008 8:14 pm

really, the refs are favoring Cinci i think you guys are seeing this right.. sucks

  241. wafan December 6, 2008 8:15 pm

Yeah. I wonder what kind of SYSTEM Oklahoma uses?

  242. big mac December 6, 2008 8:15 pm

Hawaii takes their time before every halftime. The coaches are content to be a little behind every game. Remember Florida. Oregon State? Bosie St., San Jose St., and the worst Utah St.. I hope Hawaii turns it around, and they can. Right now it’s 1:30 in the morning for Cincinnati

  243. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 8:16 pm

Alexander was sacked 3 times in the first half.

    T.O.P.: Cincy 17:34, UH 12:36

Vtech is going to kill Cinci in the Orange Bowl

  245. hawnstln December 6, 2008 8:19 pm

    LK, who gave the $2M?

  246. 99club December 6, 2008 8:20 pm

    matto-
I’ve seen the “jumping” call a couple times this year. Don’t recall it in previous years though.

  247. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 8:20 pm

Beautiful, band tributes to the Warriors and the fans.

  248. madeinhawaii December 6, 2008 8:20 pm

Tough game. Neither side really has found any rhythm. Hawaii gets the ball first. Hopefully they’ll take the momentum going into the lockeroom right back out into the field and tie up the game in the first possession.

  249. wafan December 6, 2008 8:21 pm

Just a thought about College Game Day.

I am glad they are not broadcasting from Hawai’i. I just do not have any desire to see Corso or any of those other old guys without shirts and wearing grass skirts with face paint as they try to imitate Vili.

Nope. Not me. Not gonna happen. Read my lips. I do not want nightmares.

  250. matto December 6, 2008 8:22 pm

good points bug mac…1:30 am… hope cinci start lagging

hope our o-line holds up too… when they hold, greg has a chance to throw and those 3 seconds changes the whole game

  251. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 8:23 pm

    Koa Anuenue gave the $2M

  252. wafan December 6, 2008 8:25 pm

Looks like it is the Kikaida theme again.

  253. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 8:25 pm

In all fairness, their defense is pretty good. Our O just needs to relax, play like that last drive, coaches will adjust the D for the second half and we have darn good chance.

Those Refs are starting to blow their wistles more and more in favor of their team, in small ways, but still. Their touch down gift before the half was actually quite blatant.

  254. hawnstln December 6, 2008 8:25 pm

Half time hightlights show Kia getting beat in three straight re-plays. Gotta give him some help!

  255. kymrykauai December 6, 2008 8:26 pm

Ok lizk now I know where u r but can’t see you its too far across. Where is ukuboi?
    Ok here we go!

  256. matto December 6, 2008 8:27 pm

99 – gotcha… guess they’re cracking down… was just frustrating to see since it was unnecessary… was such a chip-shot field goal attempt…didn’t need that.

  257. matto December 6, 2008 8:27 pm

wafan – that was abarembo shogun!

  258. Postmanke December 6, 2008 8:30 pm

there is just no rhythm, Cinci D very disruptive

  259. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 8:30 pm

They have Farmer flanked to the left of Kia in pseudo-“TE” position.

  260. Postmanke December 6, 2008 8:30 pm

I’d wish we’d go up top – Salas

  261. wafan December 6, 2008 8:30 pm

    Matto . . .

Opps. You are right! I liked that show, too. Do they still have it on TV? Must be the 30th season by now.

  283. kymrykauai December 6, 2008 8:46 pm

  284. hawnstln December 6, 2008 8:47 pm

No mistakes! Discipline!! Avoid turnovers and play tough Oline!!

  285. alnbama December 6, 2008 8:47 pm

Ok, need the O-line to step it up, give GA some time

  286. wafan December 6, 2008 8:49 pm

Wow. Did Cincinatti fly direct from Ohio?

Dang. And, I thought I had numb-butt yesterday.

  287. Postmanke December 6, 2008 8:49 pm

DAmn ref tried to take down GA

  288. big mac December 6, 2008 8:50 pm

  295. wafan December 6, 2008 8:56 pm

GA bounced it back to the inside then bounced his butt over. HA!

  296. hawnstln December 6, 2008 8:57 pm

Alexander has to recognize when he has a full out blitze coming – go to the short receiver.

  297. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 8:58 pm

  310. 99club December 6, 2008 9:11 pm

  311. wafan December 6, 2008 9:11 pm

    Beautiful. Some flashes of Colt.

  312. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:13 pm

    A gift from the refs.

  313. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:13 pm

…..even though that surely was a “shovel” pass. Now Cincy’s gonna challenge the call.

  314. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:14 pm

Big East refs. WAC replay official. Some of the things that make you go hmmm……

  315. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:15 pm

  321. 99club December 6, 2008 9:17 pm

    What a pass!!!!

  322. wafan December 6, 2008 9:18 pm

    Great!

Next possession the coaches have to go for the jugular. Keep driving for the score and put the game away.

  323. Woebot December 6, 2008 9:18 pm

wow. that looked like a Colt pass.

  324. madeinhawaii December 6, 2008 9:19 pm

    Kawabunga! Whootah! Go WARRIORS!

  325. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:20 pm

Assuming the defense can hold off the Bearcats for one more possession, another Warrior touchdown should put this one away.

  326. Woebot December 6, 2008 9:20 pm

lots of penalties so far. i hope the players play smart from now on.

  327. Woebot December 6, 2008 9:20 pm

whats with all the late hits and cheap shots?

  328. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:21 pm

    there goes the chant

  329. wafan December 6, 2008 9:22 pm

Still playing like fools making unnecessary penalties.. They have to start using their heads.

FOCUS! Stop playing like undiciplined thugs.

  330. hawnstln December 6, 2008 9:22 pm

As well as we are doing so far, I still gotta say we lack discipline. Some of these roughing penalties AFTER the play are just bush league. Estes, Lolotai – it is just not what a quality teams does. JMHO.

  331. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:23 pm

Things are certainly boiling between the players. Hopefully another post-game melee does not ensue.

Going into the commercial, I could faintly hear some of the crowd chanting “Overrated”. I was never the type to support such activity, but this game must certainly help to give Boise State an argument as to why they should get the final BCS at-large bid over Ohio State……though we all know the Buckeyes are gonna get that berth regardless. 🙄

  332. 99club December 6, 2008 9:26 pm

We’re all in agreement…some of our players are acting like thugs. Just finish the game and point at the scoreboard.

  333. wafan December 6, 2008 9:27 pm

    Big stop.

Now no stupid penalties and get a TD!

  334. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:27 pm

however stupid they are playing.. this is the best performance by the D in a long long time… Domination!
    or outta gas?? …Domination!

  335. Esme December 6, 2008 9:29 pm

    GOLLY TAMALE! *faints*

  336. wafan December 6, 2008 9:30 pm

It is so good to see Farmer carrying the ball.

  337. kymrykauai December 6, 2008 9:30 pm

I have to say I love the horn honk over the pa system and all the support for our warriors! In games past we never. Had that and all the other teams do…it helps the momentum and comraderie and wait till the stands do the ha’a at unlv! Go warriors!!!

  338. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:31 pm

    Ayyyyyy

    Pick 6 for Cincy.

  339. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:31 pm

    shake it off

  340. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:32 pm

Get that TV truck back at the Cinci bench

  341. wafan December 6, 2008 9:32 pm

Uh. That was not a good thing.

    Come on D!

  342. wafan December 6, 2008 9:34 pm

    Libre is back.

Score and have the D shut it down.

  343. 99club December 6, 2008 9:34 pm

    Hang on Warriors!

  344. hawnstln December 6, 2008 9:36 pm

Somebody help our tackles …… please!

  345. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:38 pm

Cincy O-Line getting tired. Warriors have been getting pressure on Pike all half.

  346. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:39 pm

    Cincy FG.
    24-20 Warriors.

  347. wafan December 6, 2008 9:40 pm

    Warriors must score.

    Come on Warriors!!!

  348. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:42 pm

    we need 3 first downs…

  349. hawnstln December 6, 2008 9:43 pm

  350. hawnstln December 6, 2008 9:43 pm

  351. wafan December 6, 2008 9:45 pm

    Go big D!

  352. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:49 pm

Gotta go the distance on this drive.

Try to score, but most definitely eat up the clock.

  353. wafan December 6, 2008 9:49 pm

    Dang. Back on the 1!

That is okay. Only 99 yards to go.

  354. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:49 pm

    nevermind.

  355. wafan December 6, 2008 9:50 pm

Man. This is a tought one.

    2 point game.

  356. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:51 pm

I still think this team is overrated but BCS teams find a way to win the game…

Us last year. SJSU, Washington etc..

  357. wafan December 6, 2008 9:52 pm

Come on D! Gotta win the game for the O!

  358. Postmanke December 6, 2008 9:52 pm

how many yards does the Cinci O have this half?

  359. hawnstln December 6, 2008 9:53 pm

    UGLY !!

  360. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 9:53 pm

    Wow………….

  361. wafan December 6, 2008 9:53 pm

    Ugh. A gut shot.

  362. 99club December 6, 2008 9:55 pm

  364. hawnstln December 6, 2008 9:58 pm

  365. Woebot December 6, 2008 10:00 pm

    it comes down to penalties.

  366. Postmanke December 6, 2008 10:01 pm

why are they not calling TO

  367. Postmanke December 6, 2008 10:02 pm

    stupid

  368. Buffoman December 6, 2008 10:03 pm

bad thing about this game is that we beat ourselves. Stupid, brainless penalities. That one by Lolotai was the one that really led to the slide backwards. Undisciplined.

AND, the o-line… Can’t beat dead horse anymore. too frustrating!

  369. Postmanke December 6, 2008 10:03 pm

I honestly say we dont have the sharpest knifes in the drawer in terms of coaching

  370. XxFaithxX December 6, 2008 10:03 pm

    WHERES THE FING TIME OUTS??????!!!

    Sheesh!!!

    sorry….

  371. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 10:05 pm

    We’re beating ourselves.

  372. Postmanke December 6, 2008 10:07 pm

Good for Cinci.. tough for the Senoirs.

we played to lose this game. Rod had it right, the play calling is key..

  373. 99club December 6, 2008 10:08 pm

Folks on the mainland are going to wake up tomorrow and see the final score and not know that Hawaii was up by two touchdowns in the 4th qtr.

BTW, five 15 yd penalties for Hawaii in this game.

  374. BowsForever December 6, 2008 10:09 pm

Well, it was a good try. Mahalo to the seniors. If half of the penalties were rightly called on Hawaii, well the team has serious discipline problems to overcome. Keep working on the problems, win that bowl game, work even harder in the offseason.

  375. L10pc December 6, 2008 10:09 pm

Arrghhh…oh well, we almost had it. Good luck to the seniors and on to the Hawaii Bowl!

  376. XxFaithxX December 6, 2008 10:09 pm

HORRIBLE game management and play calling.

    NO EXCUSE.

  377. hawnstln December 6, 2008 10:10 pm

Well, at least we can say we played the #13 team in the country even. Coach Mac and his entire staff needs to instill some discipline so we can move to the next level. good night.

  378. XxFaithxX December 6, 2008 10:11 pm

That is what happens when you got a defensive minded HC.

Play not to lose, rather then playing to WIN.

Props to the players, they played their hearts out….the coaches let them down in this one.

  379. wafan December 6, 2008 10:12 pm

Foolish penalties made by undisciplined players result in a loss.

I hope Mack quickly fixes this senseless mentality of being thugs.

Still it was a good game the Warriors should have won. I sure hope Mack calls out those players that blew it. I understand the idea of team. But one can make a difference.

Well. Onward to the Hawai’i Bowl!

  380. Buffoman December 6, 2008 10:16 pm

This game was telling. Really. In terms of what is the difference between an average team and a good team, we’re not good. Good teams just do not perform as we did. Penalities as we were flagged, just tells me that there is really a lack of pride. You can thump your chest to display you’re “proud” but if action does not display that pride, it’s all just show.

Gut check, coach Mack, gut check. If you want to be better than average, you have to instill pride and demand excellence. Without that, the potential to keep beating ourselves will continue.

This was quite a ptitful display of how to loose.

  381. matto December 6, 2008 10:17 pm

    well… so close.

    good job for thee quarters…

bonehead play called when we’re on the 1…

i don’t understand why we handed the ball off 3 yards deep in our own endzone when we KNOW our o-line isn’t holding…

    9 points from that…

    and the game.

gotta question the play call there.

  382. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 10:17 pm

The fireworks are booming while the Band plays their Rainbow medley.

  383. Postmanke December 6, 2008 10:19 pm

    Coach Mac in interviews:

“I don’t want to make a big deal of the BCS thing,” UH head coach Greg McMackin said. “I don’t know how (the UH players) are treating it. I’m treating it like it’s another ball game.

Coach Mac quoted in ESPN article”

“This is our BCS game,” coach Greg McMackin said. “We want to redeem ourselves against a good team.”

too flippy floppy for my liking. He may instill discipline but kids aren’t going to respond.

  384. matto December 6, 2008 10:19 pm

btw, all the personal fouls… we gotta control that… makes us look like thugs.
    i understand it’s senior night… i understand everyone’s pumped…
but losing control and drawing 15 yard personal fouls when we’re WINNING… there’s no excuse. sigh…

but, that being said, so close… so much potential for next year on offense… we’ll see who steps up on d next year…

onto the bowl game… hopefully we clean up our act.

  385. L10pc December 6, 2008 10:20 pm

Y’know, I was really getting tired of the ESPN crew making like it would be the ultimate embarassment for Cincy and the Big East if Cincy lost to Hawaii. Wouldn’t hurt if they at least acknowledged that Hawaii and the WAC can play on the same level. Of course, ESPN bought the BCS series, so they’ve got to push the BCS teams. 😛

  386. LizKauai (iPhone) December 6, 2008 10:24 pm

Seniors will be coming out for their plaques and walk. And a group picture. While the fireworks still pop.
    I’m hungry too.

  387. wafan December 6, 2008 10:27 pm

I believe next year we will have an incredible offense if we can rebuild out offensive line. There are flashes of brilliance!

And, the defense is becoming, once again, the pride of the Warriors.

Bravo for a tremendous football season thus far, Warriors!!! It was not pretty. And, it was not what many had envisioned. But, you did, no doubt, your best.

Next game and next year. There is always the next game and next year.

Bravissimo, Warriors!!! Thank you for a good season!!!

  388. L10pc December 6, 2008 10:27 pm

Hi Liz! We can see and hear them here up in the Pearl City highlands, too! Where are all these fireworks coming from?

  389. wafan December 6, 2008 10:30 pm

    Congratulations to the Seniors!!!

To a most successful life and career for you!

  390. wafan December 6, 2008 10:33 pm

    Goodnight all!

And, a joyous Sunday morning to each of you!!!

  391. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 10:39 pm

Congratulations to the Seniors and everyone on the team who stuck through the ups and downs that the 2008 schedule brought for the Warriors. Although tonight’s outcome wasn’t the one we all wanted, the entire team has exceeded expectations and the fact that the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl awaits you, heck, just even getting bowl-eligible this year is an accomplishment that seemed elusive heading into the start of conference play.

    Again, Congrats!

Disappointing loss. But it was truly sickening to listen to the ESPN idiots make every possible excuse for Cinn. playing so badly throughout the first three quarters. Excuses like: There’s so many diversions in Hawaii, and how they stayed at a hotel right on the beach, and even how Hawaii’s such a “different” place to play, as the camera panned to Vili and his bare chested perucssionists. Then the graphics of the Cinn.’s plane trip to Hawaii, with a map of the Mainland U.S., and the big animated arrow showing the path of their plane to Hawaii from Ohio– and their coaches placing blankets on their players as they slept on the long plane ride to Hawaii. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mainland team of ESPN go through so much effort to explain before hand why they might lose to a WAC team. What an incredible bunch of whiners.

Listening to ESPN made it even harder to take the eventual loss.

  393. FloridaTed December 6, 2008 10:44 pm

    Hey, Gang,

Let’s stop the usual blame game. That was a wild game all around and, off course, it was frustrating to lose this one. The whole thing changed on a few plays, GA’s interception for a quick touchdown shifted the whole momentum right back to them and gave them new life, the same way our defense created momentum for us in the third quarter.

The one thing that really cost us the game, was simply the O-Line not being able to hold them off at too many crucial times.

That will be, hopefully, adressed next year and it will make a huge difference.

In all this, let’s not forget that we lost to the Big East Champions by five points, in a rebuilding year, with an offense that is still trying to find themselves. ESPN was right, it would have been a huge embarrassment for their conference, had they lost.

Most of the personal fouls were quite ticky tacky and called pretty onesided.

Sure, it was a very bitter loss, but I feel mostly bad for our seniors.

  394. Esme December 6, 2008 10:51 pm

That was a roller coaster of a game. That was a roller coaster of a season.

But really, overally, this season turned out better than what I had expected (OK, feared, admittedly).

Thank you, Warriors, for giving all you could give. Aloha to our seniors!

  395. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 10:53 pm

With the congrats out of the way:

This one’s gonna sting for a while. The Pick-6 recovered by Cincy was the turning point in the game where the offense started to lose their swagger. I sort of question the running play on first down when the offense was pinned inside their own 1 and Libre ran to the outside only to get tackled/fumbled/recovered in the endzone for the Cincy safety.

Was that a designed running play to the outside (the same side where Kia was getting burned by the Cincy DEs most of the night), or was it a designed run-up-the-middle play but Libre didn’t see an opening and opted to go to the outside? Any way, it didn’t exactly work and it resulted in that safety.

The short screens and quick passes were working heading into the 4th. Why switch up to 3 consecutive running plays on first down? Was this a sign of them trying to pack up and run out the clock? Changing up the play-calling?

The issue with clock management and the use (or lack thereof) of the timeouts was also suspect. We should have been calling them once we got within 2-3 minutes remaining, but didn’t call our first one until about a minute and a half left. I hold out hope that the situational awareness of the coaching staff will improve so that next year (and seasons to come) this won’t be an issue. Unfortunately this wasn’t the first time this has happened.

  396. Committed Road Warrior December 6, 2008 11:00 pm

With the negatives now out of the way:

This team showed how good they can really be with proper execution and play-calling. Alexander, at times, showed us some glimpses that reminded us of the days with Colt and company. Everyone was surely fired up for this game and gave the Bearcats everything they could handle.

The offense has the ability to be REALLY good next year now that Alexander has had a year in the system. He has a better grasp of it now then at the start of the season against Florida, and surely he will get better if he puts in enough practice and study in the off-season. Ditto for the receivers coming back as well.

The defense played their hearts out and were dominating the line of scrimmage when momentum was on the side of the Warriors.

Anywho, there’s still one more game to be played against an opponent yet to be determined. Let’s try and finish 2008 with a winning record!

  397. matto December 6, 2008 11:06 pm

congrats to our senior, definitely – thank you all for your time, talent and dedication!

and congrats in general to the whole team and the coaching staff. don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of aspects of this game that were brilliant and some that were down-right head-scratching. but to take an offense that lost as much as we did and a coaching staff that was practically rebuilt, to come out with a winning season AND a bowl game – awesome. great job!

  398. Esme December 6, 2008 11:07 pm

Committed Road Warrior, thanks for the thoughtful, spot-on analysis there!

  399. what was that? December 6, 2008 11:28 pm

With Hawaii playing conservatively and trying to protect a 14-point lead….
taken from espn website. That is what Hawaii did and that is why they lost. With 11 minutes left in the game, on every possession they got, they ran the ball on the first play. The funny thing is, I KNEW they were going to run it. Because I have seen how conservative the coaches get. If I knew it, I’m sure the Cincy coaches knew it too. Sure makes it hard to win…
Oh well, it was an amazing game. Amazing how many things went right and then how many things went wrong.
I wish Hawaii could have won for the seniors, but most of all, I wish Hawaii could have won to shut the ESPN guys up about the BCS. This sure would have thrown a wrench into their party. … Hawaii number 2 in the WAC beats BCS bound Cincy and Boise stays home. I wish so much that had happened to prove to all those WAC, MTW, etc haters …. it sure was close, but close means nothing. no one remembers close… only a win could have done it.
UH defense played unreal in the second half, except for all of the dumb penalties. I missed tackle… that was it for the second half. wow!
oh well. could of, should of, would of….. all for nothing.
It hurt to loose, I was amazed we played as good as we did.
players thanks for a great game! unreal to watch…
coaches… you really gotta think about that 4th quarter play calling when we have the lead.

  400. Postmanke December 6, 2008 11:33 pm

The defense was awesome! I see a trend happening with us being more of a defensive team and less an offensive team in the coming years. We are no longer a prolific run and shoot team and our current recruiting year, albeit awesome, will reflect that. So get used to it. We are a defensive team. 7-6 8-5 seasons abound if you look at our upcoming schedules. But as long as we play defense we will be in every game and it will be very entertaining to watch. IMHO I see this as the beginning of the end to our high scoring run and shoot. It may get better but not by much. Offensive recruits will go elsewhere. Rolo is right, you need to be a gambler to call this offense. We gambled with the run. Defensive mentality has a grip on this offense. Its hard to let go. All in all, good year. Look forward to watching the defense next season! -might as well get used it..

  401. Long Time UH Fan December 6, 2008 11:39 pm

It seemed to me that the coaches called for more runs because the OL had difficulty protecting the quarterback on passing plays when Cincy rushed more than 4 DL. Cincy started to blitz linebackers and safeties and we know what happened… Alexander was uncomfortable in the pocket and couldn’t complete a pass or run as he did in the first three quarters as the protection broke down.

  402. what was that? December 6, 2008 11:39 pm

    Postmanke…
I agree. That is why there is only one June Jones. He is a believer and a gambler.
Ron Lee is a…. “um… I think we can do this…. but no maybe we can’t” kind of coach.
He can’t seem to pull the trigger. Actually, i wonder if it is really him or if it is Coach Mac telling him to put the breaks on because of his defensive mind.
oh well. it was a good season. I really didn’t expect 7-6
    Good job!

  403. kymrykauai December 6, 2008 11:51 pm

So sorry for the outcome of the game but I have to say the fans were there and the energy in the stadium was awesome. While were sad for the outcome of tonights game, we are grateful we could be there with such a wonderful group of tsai-ko’s who have been so welcoming and good to us! Mahalo Jerry & myki for my Alexander photo!!!
Thinking and praying for kristin and curveball!love to you all!

  404. Postmanke December 7, 2008 12:00 am

I would like to send GA some Anthony Robbins CD’s to listen to in the offseason. He seems to be really hard on himself when things head south. I wonder if the quick yank in the Fla game still affecting him. You can see it in his demeanor and his decision making. I wonder how afraid he is to check off a plays at the line of scrimmage. Or if they even let him. The run play for a safety should have been checked off. Many plays with 3 down linemen could have been checked off but was not. He is such a gamer tough to see him almost robot like in this offense.

  405. SIMPLE December 7, 2008 12:06 am

    heu !

  406. al December 7, 2008 12:08 am

    what a game!

i felt like i just got off the colossus roller coaster. talk about a ride that took you from the bottom and then to the top of the highest heights only to come crashing down. hard. thud. kerplunk!

coach mack said it all in his post game interview, “we didn’t finish……….”

  407. al December 7, 2008 12:12 am

i love this team. they are overachievers.

this game i thought was symbolic of our season. we were green. we were for the most part not as big, strong, and as fast as our opponents. we had flashes of greatness. our defense is tough but lacks depth, so when key players are out we hurt. our defense needs an upgrade in speed.

we had em, but, like coach said we didn’t finish. we awoken the bearcat when we had a chance to bury them.

  408. al December 7, 2008 12:13 am

our offense needs to get it done. we need to be more physical. our line needs to take charge. it has taken us soooo long to be consistent. the speed rushers are killing us. we had flashes of greatness. we need to focus on doing somethings right and build from there.

we need to recruit superior athletes. i believe we are on the right track. we need to recruit speed.

  409. A-House December 7, 2008 12:17 am

I have read most of the posts, but in my heart and honest opinion, the coach(es) again played not to lose from part or the third qtr and it showed in the attitude of the players and it took the fans right out of the stadium!!! Why call “lateral” movement plays when you are inside the 5 yard line? Especially, when you know that the DEs are very mobile and will brush aside the OTs?

Yes, the OTs, again, could not handle the DE’s. If this is the best UH has, then we must look to next year, IF, Coach Smith will groom the BEST players to step up. If coaches are playing “favorites”, then the team is doomed before they step on the field.

It’s no different than the “zebras” who silently conclude that they will make UH or any other team suffer before kickoff.

I must say that Coach Mack stands firm supporting his staff, but one does wonder what the heck is happening because the players are like night and day during the game. WHY?

The players, like it or not, must perform to the best of their abilities even when, in their minds, the coaches are screwing up. To me, it becomes a matter of personal pride.

It will be interesting to see which players really step up during “off-season” training. I met a young man at the elevator one day and he remarked, “just finished your workout”. I see him at 24hr fitness some days. He asked if I go every day, and I replied, “yes”. His response was” I don’t have that discipline”.

  410. al December 7, 2008 12:20 am

as i have said before……we were spoiled with the teams of 06 and 07. those teams were laden with talent, especially offensive talent.

this year our defense is great except that we give up the long ball. not enough speed. not enough depth.

folks don’t sweat. even june knew it would be a struggle this year. yah, he did.

    but, i love my warriors.

  411. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2008 12:22 am

    sad.

    positives:

we stepped up to the plate, came back from being stopped offensively to lead by 14.

good to see the use of what seemed to be some sort of power I and farmer as a tightend.

the players didnt lose the game per se. when we clicked we clicked.

    negatives:

the game does not stop until the final whistle. play the d@mn game to completion.

COACHING sucked. i know, you all might disagree with me…but IMHO it sucked a fat one. play calling? clock management? how do we (fans, radio announcers, coaches) say clock management was poor the past few games and that we need to fix it and continue to screw it up? 1 or 2 yeah thats fine. but its getting to be habitual. shows that maybe just maybe the inexperience of the staff is getting to be a problem.

offensive line? i dont even want to talk about the Tackles. just hope and pray we have some players recruited for those positions next year.

all in all it was an exciting game. new season ahead of us. as for coaching they get a pass this year. i never felt fully comfortable with the staff to begin with. supported them non the less. however, business is business. either produce or pack up.

go warriors. keep your heads up. it was not you all to blame. Sheraton Bowl is around the corner. play hard and strong!

  412. al December 7, 2008 12:29 am

the most scariest of thoughts is that we lose 35 seniors of which the greater majority are on defense.

shudder….we lose our five best db’s. 3/4ths of the dline and 2/3’s of the linebackers.

  413. warriors December 7, 2008 12:43 am

Warriors did an awesome job this year. This was a painful loss but I think the warrior fans have to shoulder some of the blame. With about twelve minutes to go and a fourteen point lead, fans started chanting “overrated.” First of all Mana Silva was down and that was no class. Secondly, why would we want to wake up the 13th ranked team in the country. It seemed like it all turned around after that.
It was very hard to walk out of the stadium with the Bearcat fans, who were actually classy, because some idiots chanted before the end, we looked like fools. I take solace in the fact that the Warriors played like warriors, and represented the state with pride and will do so in the Hawaii Bowl.

  414. al December 7, 2008 12:53 am

no matter what i love this team.

    we must reduce our penalties.
    no excuse for that.
we may be out matched physically, but, we should never be outmatched mentally. 99% of the time a penalty is a mental mistake that should not happen.

1% of the time the rule is misinterpreted or misunderstood. for example, that penalty against tua mahaley. what? you can’t jump up to block a kick and land on somene even if you were hit on your way up?????

  415. chawan_cut December 7, 2008 12:56 am

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ok, i’m over it.

can’t wait to see what unfolds tomorrow. all the bowls should be filled. wonder who we’ll get.

what a year. ups and downs and ups and downs. but our season isn’t over. tomorrow night, the end of the year banquet, and then the bowl game if a few weeks.
rest up, recover, pass your finals and practice like crazy to beat whoever we get.

and don’t forget Dec 7th today.

Thank You Veterans and current members of our armed forces.

    ok, nite. tired.

  416. Darren December 7, 2008 1:00 am

It made me sick to my stomach to hear our fans chant “overrated”….with the whole 4th quarter to go nonetheless. Brought back very bad memories of the Superdome.

Defense played their guts out…unbelievable performance against a very good QB and team.

  417. LizKauai (iPhone) December 7, 2008 1:27 am

Yes that chanting was shameful and if anything, I hope the law of bachi was emblazoned on their foreheads.
Always a good idea to wait til the game is over before celebrating.
I love our Warriors and love the way il looked like the SB – all decked out in white!

Congrats on a successful year Warriors, now rest up for your bowl game!

  421. jayz December 7, 2008 5:45 am

The personal fouls commited are an embarassment. The wideout leaving early is an embarassment, just a bunch of mental mistakes all the time. This is a VERY undisciplined team. I see no consequence when it happens. Yank the player, have him leave the field when it occurs. Sit him down. The real killer for me is when the receiver jumps early. How can you leave early if you’re watching ball?!! I could even live with the sometimes questionable play-calling, but the mental mistakes are really frustrating to watch. It’s real painful for the diehard fan.

McMackin (and other coaches) need to lay down the law on stupid penalties. We could have been 10 and 3 this year. But could’ve, should’ve, would’ve. Stupid is as stupid does.

  422. inotdown December 7, 2008 6:59 am

Stewart Mandel of CNNSI has Western Michigans name “bolded” meaning they accepted the invitation. Not sure if its totally accurate.

    San Jose State was bad.
    Last night was worse.

  423. bb December 7, 2008 7:05 am

    I can accept these losses:

    Florida
    Oregon State
    Boise State

    These losses were messed up:

Utah State–Utah State? You gotta be kidding me!
San Jose State–Oh God..(When the players thought personal fouls were cool)
Cincinnati–Personal fouls=Early Christmas present for the Bearcats

We should be 10-3. I swear personal fouls….Stupid personal fouls.

I mentioned the players earlier and I will again. Thank you Seniors for playing for UH, Da Warriors, the State of Hawai`i and of course, us, the fans. I wish that we could have gotten you double digit wins this year….Give um hell in the bowl game!!

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Curveball, my prayers for your lovely wife Kristin!

    Tsaikos,
I still am numb from last nite. The fans called out Cincinatti in the 4th, they responded. Our Warriors, as a group, played really hard and should have won. We can objectively say that the group MIND was not in this
one to win. We didn’t play 4 quarters. Thats a fact.
We played like crap in the 4th. Not because the Warriors didn’t try. The Warriors didn’t BELIEVE!

But I am heartened that we got a next game, and a next year. Congrats Coach Mack for putting together a good season. Now, fix the players’ MIND! And that starts with fixing the coaches’ MINDS!

Also, as has been said, we knew the first play on each possession in the 4th. Run. Come on coach.

Everyone keeps saying this is a “rebuilding” year. This year we loose another 35 seniors, next year were going to loose Alexander and some of the receivers. We are always going to be rebuilding, especially if we always have to settle for JCs. If we want to be a big time program, we have to figure out how keep things going like Boise and a lot of the other big time programs do.
It all goes back to recruiting.
Speaking of recruiting, is it just me, or does it seem like almost every player that has been talked about this year is a defensive player?
Now that Mac is our HC, are all of our scholarships going to go to the defense now?
I’d love to hear of a big OL prospect or a fast and tall receiver… but all we hear about is defense.
This year probably truly is the beginning of the end to the run and shoot offense.
It sure was fun when it lasted.
I think one of the most important stats they showed last night was about scoring….
    06 — Hawaii # 1 in the nation
    07 — Hawaii # 1 in the nation
    08 — Hawaii #69? in the nation
    Wow!
I might be wrong, but even when JJ was here and we were “rebuilding” I think our offense was still always up there.

  448. kymrykauai December 7, 2008 8:40 am

what was that: totally agree. Mac CANNOT resort to signing all these JC players. Once and a while they are okay. But look what happened with Ron Prince at Kansas State. I know he is a defensive oriented coach, but Mac we got to start recruiting some stud offensive players, not just defensive.

    Great Morning All!

Woke to the sounds of the Fly-over Pearl Harbor this morning. It reminded me that all things can be overcome with great will and determination.

Remembering all those who fought and gave their all for US…

ND is like 0-5 for their last bowl games…..we HAVE to make sure they go to 0-6….UH can’t be the team that lets them get off the snide.

    New Post!

What Notre Dame? I have been waiting over 10 years for this one. I was hoping since that loss when Von Apps was coaching. That one really hurt. UH was one play away from winning the game. All they needed was a first down. But the receiver decided to dance instead of going up field and never made it. Kinda remind me of some receivers this year.

  457. d1島 December 7, 2008 9:36 am

Boy that Breaking News is pretty contradictory to what the ESPN Blog is saying about a half-hour ago

The most interesting thing to watch will be where Notre Dame decides to winter. It has three choices — Independence Bowl, Hawaii Bowl and Texas Bowl — and many believe the Irish will head to Houston because of the matchup with Rice, the fact that the game is in an NFL stadium, and because Texas is a recruiting hotbed that the Irish need to tap.

As far as why Hawaii should “settle” for a mediocre ND team in the HB? The Bowl is separate from the UH program, Dave Maitlin has got to do what’s best for his kuleana. ND’s “football alumni” will travel here with way more fans to put BIS than any other choice still on the board.
And that’s a good thing for all of us because, as Bulla pointed out, there are lots of empty seats on the flights to Hawaii now.
I’m sure all the “Irish-themed” watering holes in Hawaii would love it! 😉

Hiya! Like Bulla, I find pre-boarding time a good time for reflection.
My life includes fandom because I choose to be a fan. I choose this because it
    1. Has led to becoming part of an uplifting Tsai-ko experience.
    2. Supports youth development and state unity.
    3. Is fun to watch.
    4. Is character-building – for myself as well as others. How do I handle vicarious adversity? Success?
    5. If being a fan becomes a total bummer (I become morose). I will find something else to enjoy and learn from.
