Game day: Bye

It would be mature to not beat the proverbial dead horse. But, heck, since we’ve never been accused of being mature:  Don’t you wish UH decided to accept an offer to play Colorado today?

Yep. As my former moneyman Donn Natori once said: “You’re redundant and repetitive.” (He also called me “un-literate,” but that’s an English discussion for another day.)

* * * * *

The coaches were on recruiting missions yesterday, with one in the East, another in California, and two on Maui. There also is a prospect here on a visit.

Aloha kakahiaka. What’s with all the dropped passes? Imua Warriors!!!

  5. UHfan808 October 19, 2013 7:13 am

    Hehehe 😀

    Bad me :p

  6. papajoe2 October 19, 2013 7:13 am

    Good morning everybody!
    Top 5?

  7. papajoe2 October 19, 2013 7:14 am

    Rats! Close enough.

  8. papajoe2 October 19, 2013 7:17 am

Interesting to find out how Norm Chow got the sack.

  9. UHfan808 October 19, 2013 7:18 am

    Close enuff, papajoe2!

  10. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2013 7:19 am

    papajoe:
Woolsey rolled right and tried to use Chow as a screen. But Chow stepped back, they collided, and it was hold-me-back time.

  11. nanakuli October 19, 2013 7:20 am

ST, what do you think of Taylor Grahams performance? Is he 100% yet?

  12. UHfan808 October 19, 2013 7:20 am

Yeah, what’s the 411 on the Norm sack, ST?

    Hehe

  13. UHfan808 October 19, 2013 7:22 am

Sounded like a funny collision. Anyone get hurt??

  14. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2013 7:25 am

    Nanakuli:
There was no hitting the QB, so it was hard to tell if Graham’s 100 percent. But he threw some nice passes.

  15. UHfan808 October 19, 2013 7:25 am

Have the recruiting coaches found anything(one) interesting?!

  16. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2013 7:26 am

The defense blitzed a lot and ran a lot of games on the line. The hope is that the same tactics are employed in real games.

  17. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2013 7:30 am

The NCAA limits each team to one in-person evaluation of each high school team.
Because UH was scheduled to attend last night’s Kaiser game, it can not attend another Kaiser game this year. That’s why UH evaluated Baldwin-Lahainaluna in person. And, of course, it’s better to evaluate players in person than watching on TV.

  18. wafan October 19, 2013 7:32 am

Did Coach have to rolls after the sack?

  19. wafan October 19, 2013 7:32 am

And, a good morning to everyone!

  20. Wes'side Warrior October 19, 2013 7:38 am

    Morning, Gang!

We’ve got lots of dropped passes this year. Seems to be more than in the recent past. Hope that’s remedied by next game! We gotta move forward already!

Busy day yesterday with my youngest getting sick and me having to pick her up from school. Then ending the night with my three oldest kids, wandering Ala Moana (my first time since 1981!… Wow, that place has changed!), then browsing Party City in Waikele, followed by a quick dinner at Jurison’s. Haven’t been out with this bunch in ages!

Heading out to Mokuleia today in support of my bruddah’s halau, and then I think I’ll just spend the rest of the day relaxing at home, if the little ones allow! Wish there were a game today I could yell at! Oh well… next week!

    Have a great day, everyone!

  21. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 7:38 am

Norm Chow with a sack? Sounds like Woosley ran himself into trouble… LOL

Bubba is stepping it up the past week. Good performance vs UNLV and now good scrimmage. Wouldn’t be surprised to see more of him in the coming weeks.

The high number of drops is concerning. 7 of 15 incompletions were drops… completely unacceptable BUT it was just practice. WRs must work on fundamentals.

    ST….

More importantly, who won the egg toss the other day?

Putting on my amateur WR coaching hat. New WR drill: Make the WRs play catch with golf balls. Good luck trying to catch it with your body. You don’t have to throw it hard, but a golf ball at 10 yards will sting you pretty good if you don’t have soft hands.

  22. Boolakanaka October 19, 2013 7:38 am

Cheerio from Britannia! Big game game for boola u., playing Fordham today.

  23. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 7:41 am

20… yeah way too many drops. Seems like more drops this year overall but last year had more drops in critical situations (3rd downs and dropped TDs).

The WR drops have steadily gotten worse since Salas and Pilares graduated in 2010.

  24. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2013 7:41 am

    FUHA:
I do have the egg-toss video posted on YouTube.
I’m going to upload the umbrella relay pretty soon.

  26. oldie October 19, 2013 7:49 am

Are the receivers using the jug machines provided by the Tsaikos? If not, it’s time for them to do so. Need to practice catching with the hands. No amount of practice is too much.

  27. Boolakanaka October 19, 2013 7:54 am

26-Speaking of jug machines, saw Chris Carter on some pre-game show, and he was catching balls flying mach 2 with one hand–incredibly impressive.

  28. Leron October 19, 2013 7:56 am

Powell and Naeole were at the Baldwin-Lahainaluna game. Wonder what UH’s chances are of landing Hercules Mataafa. That kid was a beast last night.

  29. Ipu Man October 19, 2013 8:00 am

    I hope Colorado loses…

  30. kev-1 October 19, 2013 8:08 am

I wonder if Charleston Southern has a financial shortage like UH now has. Enjoy the game Charleston Southern fans. I haven’t posted much this week because I am pretty disappointed that UH turned down the game and I’ve been pouting about not having a game to watch today.

  31. markazulu October 19, 2013 8:19 am

Though im disappointed in our record im loving the fact so much freshman are getting playing time. Like UNLV head coach said when the light goes on its gonna be an explosion 😉

  32. AllG October 19, 2013 8:25 am

Alarming amount of drops! We need to crank up the jugs machine to full blast and have these receivers work on catching with their hands

  33. 3-Prong October 19, 2013 8:26 am

Good Morning from the PNW, heading down to Eugene to watch Marcus tear it up tonight. Glorious weather we’re having. ALMOST like Paradise. We all know there is only one. hehe

I’m with d1. Just be a fan. Go Cats……and as always, Let’s Go Bows!!

  34. 3-Prong October 19, 2013 8:29 am

Re: Dropped passes (7!!!) Receivers need to catch with their hands and not let it get to their bodies.

  35. kev-1 October 19, 2013 8:29 am

#31 Markazulu . . . I agree. That’s gotta be a good thing for the future. Not only do we have young guys getting game experience, they are actually making big plays here and there. So, the potential is evident.

  36. oldie October 19, 2013 8:33 am

    Boola

Amazing what some of the pros can do. Just want our guys to catch the ones that hit them in the chest or helmet. With 2 hands.

  37. Dino October 19, 2013 8:36 am

watching the baldwin – lahaina game last night, hawaii needs to get some of those Lunas. Looks like they can step in right away and play at the next level.

  38. A-House October 19, 2013 8:36 am

much has been mentioned about the quality of the 2007 receivers, who as a group, was the only 4 person group wherein each had 1,000 yards reception in the same year and thus the WAC creating a special award – witnesses say that certain members of that group spent many extra hours with the “jugs” machine before and after practice

seems 2013 receivers are dropping a lot of balls during practice and games – wonder if the WR coach, a grad assistant, has the alas to make it mandatory for all to catch ball from the “jugs” machine or will the layers revolt like Grambling? bend their minds to “focus” on the incoming ball and catch with “soft hands and bring the ball to their body”

if you were a WR on 2013 UH team, would you listen to him? or say silently, you young whipah snapah.

  39. A-House October 19, 2013 8:38 am

did not Maatafa already commit to some BCS school?

it would be awfully difficult for UH to lure him to Honolulu when the “mainland” calls to an outside isle boy with promises of all the wonders to see

  40. markazulu October 19, 2013 8:44 am

I think our best asset is our youth and never say die mentality though our win-lose record is unacceptable teaching your players it ain’t over till its over will pay dividends in the future. I also just realized we are REALLY expecting a lot from our Graduate Assistants lol is there anybody on the offensive side besides chow that isnt a grad assistant?

  41. yessir October 19, 2013 8:45 am

    It’s BUBBA Time.

  42. cocobean October 19, 2013 8:46 am

  43. JLO October 19, 2013 9:05 am

    Happy birthday to Mike Andrade!!!
There was only 2 sacks in yesterday’s scrimmage??

  44. RedZone October 19, 2013 9:10 am

Grambling players revolt so now the school had to cancel the game.

  46. al October 19, 2013 9:35 am

besides mataafa…their oline average weight is 275 lbs. and how about that #42.

    baldwin also has some gems.

from lahaina, honolulu is also going away from and got enough city lights here. ma and pa can jump on the bus and watch the game. stay at a holiday inn. drop in on some tailgates. life is good.

  47. al October 19, 2013 9:36 am

    ahouse…herculrs is uncommitted.

  52. madeinhawaii October 19, 2013 10:07 am

That interception off of Ikaika, was it a clean interception or an interception from a deflected pass or bumbled catch?

  53. madeinhawaii October 19, 2013 10:10 am

    7 for 26 drops…
    11 for 26 catches
    8 no-goods with 1 intercepted..

Got to address those drops… 7 is high for 26 attempts.

  54. Inyoface October 19, 2013 10:11 am

  62. Kapahulu October 19, 2013 12:24 pm

    FINAL: COLORADO over Charleston Southern

    Charleston Southern
    (7-1) 0 10 0 0 10

    Colorado
    (3-3) 8 14 7 14 43

  63. Kapahulu October 19, 2013 12:29 pm

Quarterback Sefo Liufau won his first career start Saturday thanks to fellow freshman Michael Adkins’ four touchdown runs in Colorado’s 43-10 rout of lower-tier Charleston Southern in a rare mid-October breather for the Buffaloes.

Adkins set the school freshman record with his four TDs, capped by a 34-yard run with six minutes left, making him the first Colorado running back to rush for four touchdowns in a game since Lawrence Vickers did it against Missouri in 2005.

Adkins finished with 137 yards on 13 carries for a 10.5-yard average.

Liufau completed 14 of 20 passes for 198 yards. He connected with Paul Richardson eight times for 122 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown as the Buffaloes (3-3) snapped a three-game skid in which they’d been walloped by a combined 106 points, stretching their Pac-12 losing streak to 11.

The Buccaneers (7-1), of the Big South gave up their bye week for a $400,000 paycheck plus travel expenses to serve as a fill-in for Colorado after its Sept. 14 game against Fresno State was cancelled because of the floods that devastated the Front Range last month.

The 13th game is the most ever in the regular season for an FCS school

So there you go, Colorado found another taker for less money than UH.

  64. Kapahulu October 19, 2013 12:34 pm

The Buffs can end their five-year bowl drought by winning three more times because the NCAA is allowing them to count two wins over FCS teams instead of the usual one toward the six-victory benchmark because Fresno State couldn’t reschedule its game in Boulder this season

  65. Babo October 19, 2013 12:54 pm

Its’ a bye week and Vegas still has Hawaii as an 18 point underdog… LOL

  66. mauiboy159 October 19, 2013 12:55 pm

UH should also look at Lahainalunas big nose tackle 6’4 350 Pousima Gaioia….kid….. just stuff the middle and commands double teams…….ummmm also heard rumors of a retired football player, thinking of walking on at UH.

  74. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 3:58 pm

The inevitable has finally happened, getting skunked on my picks so far this week…. Need Clemson to set it up.

Winston is so good it’s stupid. For an inexperienced QB he does so many of the little things well…. Accurate on swing passes, progressing quickly to next option when 1st option isn’t there. Of course the arm strength is there. Once he tightens up his throwing motion and footwork, he’s going to be unstoppable… at the NFL level. Just a matter of how fast he can get up to speed in the pro game.

Just solidified my opinion that Winston is the best QB in college football.

Side note, Teddy Bridgwater looks like a small guy. I doubt his height and weight are accurate. Losing Friday doesn’t change my opinion of him. He’s a little overrated, but he’s still a solid QB.

  75. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2013 4:38 pm

Glad that Hawaii didn’t accept the CU game.

Plenty of great college games on tv today to feed the FB appetite. Anyone watched that TAMU game or the Clemson game going on now? Awesome stuffs!

WAZZU making a game out of it vs Oregon… Just scored to narrow the gap 27-21 now.

Being close to Oregon through 2 quarters only means the starters will be in longer for the inevitable 2nd half beat down.

  82. question for answers please October 19, 2013 5:38 pm

as far as iosefa and stutzman
does chow want to play these guys? old regime players. we dont see a lot of these 2.

  86. Buffoman October 19, 2013 6:13 pm

  87. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 6:30 pm

    Update…

Velazquez is wearin down JDS… JDS needs to pull a miracle to win. He’s likely down 3-0 and he’s getting beat up.

  88. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 6:34 pm

JDS is getting dominated…. Just a matter of time until stoppage. It’ll be a miracle if JDS gets through the fight now.

  89. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 6:41 pm

ITS ALL OVER,!!! Cain Velasquez TKOs Junior Dos Santos.

  90. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 6:45 pm

Wow, Oregon St is the best at executing the screen pass in all of college football. Coach Riley has a great feel for timing up a screen vs the defense trying to get aggressive.

  91. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2013 6:50 pm

Boise ran for 400yards vs Nevada and neutralized Fajardo.

Plus starting QB Southwick went down on 1st series of game. The backup came in and went 18 for 21. Not many pass yards, but Hedrick is more of a runner and went for 115y on the ground.

  92. al October 19, 2013 7:15 pm

  104. Former UH Athlete October 20, 2013 6:01 am

As a late note… Good to see Pedroza and Castro making an impact in the scrimmage. These two guys are going to be impact players once eligible next season.

  105. Former UH Athlete October 20, 2013 6:18 am

96.. Because SS isn’t the starter. Graham is the #1 unless too hurt to play.

It’s going to be Graham or Woosley next year so the reps are going to them. (Unless Chow finds another QB ready to go during recruiting). Unlikely a new QB steps in and beats the returnees right away because Graham and Woosley will be entering 3rd year of Chow’s system.

Not sure how much impact Tuileta will make once he’s here. He’s a much better volleyball player than football player. I do like his accuracy and his footwork is good for his age. Arm strength is just ok and his release is a little slow. His highlight videos mainly show him hitting wide open targets, so hard to draw any accurate conclusions on him. He likely needs a few years of grooming before he’s ready to compete for starting job.
