Chow completes staff

Norm Chow completed his coaching staff with the announced hiring of Chris Demarest as special teams coordinator and defensive assistant.

Demarest coached East Stroudsburg’s defensive backs the past season. He also has coached at Florida State, Rutgers and North Carolina State, where he worked with Chow.

Chow has decided to retain Inoke Funaki as a graduate assistant.

Funaki, a former UH quarterback, has served as a GA the past two seasons. During the transition period after Greg McMackin’s departure, Funaki was certified as a recruiter.

Funaki began serving as a GA in January 2010. The NCAA has a three-year limit for a GA. Because GAs are on one-year contracts, Funaki’s second term ended last month.

Funaki is on track to earn a master’s degree in public administration in May.

Defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer arrives in town tomorrow.

Former UH lineman Ray Hisatake is part of a mentoring program at his other alma mater, College of San Mateo. The past year, he served as mentor to Ronald Fields, a cornerback who has committed to play for the Warriors in 2012.

Hisatake said he hopes San Mateo will steer Fehoko Fanaika, one of the nation’s top JC linemen, to UH.

“We need to get the big guy over there,” Hisatake said.

So nice of Utah State to announce Dave Aranda as defensive coordinator today after he had been working at the school for a week.

There are still apparently some schools looking to fill their 2012 football schedules. Nevada just filled their last puka with a home game against South Florida from the Big East.

The University of Nevada has completed its 2012 non-conference football schedule with the addition of a home game against the University of Southβ€ˆFlorida, a member of the Big East Conference, the schools announced Tuesday. The matchup is part of a two-game series between the teams as Nevada will play at South Florida in 2015.

The most interesting part to me of this short article out of Fresno is that it hints that the MWC/CUSA new conference could allow for its schools to keep at least some of their local TV rights. That could mean that UH could keep its PPV revenue.

If everything goes according to the plan, both the Mountain West and Conference USA would dissolve and a new conference would be created, beginning competition in all sports, not just football, in the summer of 2013.

We could also see more local broadcasts of Fresno State games under this proposal.

So, the NCAA is delaying the $2,000 per year stipend for scholarship athletes but are allowing student-athletes who signed in December to still get the stipend money. Most of those athletes were football and men’s basketball recruits, so they will be getting the extra money while all of their teammates will not. Since the majority of the recruits who signed in December were male and schools aren’t allowed to give the stipend to athletes who sign now, doesn’t this technically mean that the NCAA is creating a Title IX imbalance?

The association’s Division I board of directors moved Saturday to modify a plan to allow schools to bump up the value of annual scholarships by as much as $2,000, deferring final action until at least April. The measure then will have to pass muster with member schools and conferences.

The NCAA said it then wouldn’t go into effect until the 2013-14 school year.

That suspension didn’t come until December. The NCAA has said that some 1,000 prospects who signed letters-of-intent in November – most of them in football and basketball – can get the additional money if it were promised to them.

Those signing in February and April cannot.

It is interesting that *coaches* can now oversee summer workouts for incoming recruits enrolled in summer school.

Approved by the board: loosening restrictions in men’s basketball, allowing coaches and other staff members to oversee eight hours a week of practice and training by incoming recruits enrolled in summer classes, and permitting coaches to run prospects through tryouts. The latter figures to help mid- and lower-level schools evaluate recruits after better-known prospects have been signed.

Eastern Illinois: We hear Dino Babers has his offensive coordinator and receivers coaches. Sterlin Gilbert will serve as OC. Gilbert has served as offensive coordinator at Temple HS (TX) for the past few seasons (also worked under Art Briles a few years back at Houston). West Texas A&M running backs coach Andrew Sowder will become the receivers coach at EIU. Sowder played under Babers at Baylor.

  45. expat January 17, 2012 10:14 am

Utah State has been one of those schools that always has a few Hawaii kids on the roster, like Idaho. Interesting to see how this might change with conference realignment. That is going to be the big challenge for Aranda (as well as recruiters at NMSU and Idaho). Those three schools out of the WAC were the ones that aggressively recruited Hawaii kids. Not many Hawaii kids on the LaTech, SJSU, Nevada or Fresno rosters last year — just one as far I can tell from looking at the rosters.

So, in joining the MWC we leave behind the three conference schools that were recruiting Hawaii kids the hardest.

  51. kev-1 January 17, 2012 10:30 am

Used to be in my mind that the Colts = character in regards to football programs. In my opinion, a Tressel hire would call that into question.

Retaining Inoke might help UH in its recruiting efforts to secure next year’s top Class of 2013 Kahuku prospects RB Aofaga Wily & OL John Wa’a.

  53. kev-1 January 17, 2012 10:34 am

Almost positive that Inoke will make a good impression this year with Coach Chow, resulting in him getting some kind of coaching position next year, much like the road Tuioti, Powell, and Rauscher have taken.

The Na Wahine Softball Booster Club is currently accepting applications and renewals and on our website as well as at http://www.hawaiiathletics.com under the softball program’s page, fans can participate in the “Dollars for Dingers/Kokua for K’s” pledge drive. saw this online an thought sum of you would be interested to read it.

A reporter asked Harbaugh today if he ever thought he could take this team from 6-10 to the NFC Championship game in one year.

Harbaugh said, “Never thought about that then. It was always, ‘Make the day better than yesterday. How can we find a way to be better today than we were yesterday? How can we be better tomorrow than we were today? And if we could get a percent better every day for the next 30 days, we’ll be 30 percent better as a team. And then how can we get a mile an hour faster, or how could we get a .01 percent better? Let’s chase that.'”

Was there a two-year plan or three-year plan?

Harbaugh said, “No, the plan was to win this year. There was no five-year plan, or three-year plan. It was let’s win this year. How can we do that? By getting better every day.”

  108. Bowwar January 17, 2012 1:09 pm

I wish Aranda well, but…he better not poach our island kids too much or he’ll burn his bridge forever.

  109. d1shima January 17, 2012 1:17 pm

    Top CIX!

  110. d1shima January 17, 2012 1:19 pm

    Congratulations to GA Funaki.

    Welcome DC Kaumeyer.

  111. d1shima January 17, 2012 1:21 pm

Almost positive that Inoke will make a good impression this year with Coach Chow, resulting in him getting some kind of coaching position next year, much like the road Tuioti, Powell, and Rauscher have taken.

Hah? Already gunning for one of the new staffers? 😯

  112. bigislandkurt January 17, 2012 1:21 pm

All’s fair in love and recruiting. Best of luck to Aranda. He is the DC and recruiting is the lifeline of his current employment.

    BIK

  113. mikey January 17, 2012 1:22 pm

Congrad to Aranda he’s a great guy wish him well.

Not too well against us but will be an interesting event to watch.

He can take all the kids we don’t get to sign. More the merrier and 2nd chance for our island kids as well.

Is Rolo still here? He should go with Aranda. More power to him

  114. chiefgator January 17, 2012 1:25 pm

Sorry off the subject for awhile. There must be a way to work the Sang Ming character in H50 into a regular. That actor is so good he actentuates every scene he’s in and steals the show. Love to see him. Good luck to Norm Chow.

  115. d1shima January 17, 2012 1:27 pm

Stay safe and warm all you PNW Tsaikos!

  116. primo123 January 17, 2012 1:27 pm

    who’s Sang Ming?

  117. cheepono January 17, 2012 1:30 pm

kaimi fairburn says it’s between cal and ucla.

  118. mikey January 17, 2012 1:30 pm

    madeinhawaii:

Maybe we should put the Mascot(s) on a tuition scholarship.

That’s a great idea most every school does that but us.

Not a fan of Vili and agree with others:

Vili is an embarrassment, IM-not so-HO.

Vili takes the mascot thing a bit too far…he needs to chill it,

Can’t depend on Vili to recruit for UH./blockquote>

  119. mikey January 17, 2012 1:33 pm

Vili got suspended couple of time too that I remember.

All other sports stop inviting him to the arena games.

  120. kapakahi January 17, 2012 1:35 pm

    #91,

Vili still has one more son in high school….returning Farrington HS sophomore DL Breiden.

  123. al January 17, 2012 1:54 pm

vili’s contract as an entertainer is for football only. he’ll only do appearances at other events as long as you pay him.

Sup everyone. Very cloudy here. Can’t wait for spring ball…

    thanks bryson

  126. al January 17, 2012 1:57 pm

tsai’s been bringing up the mascot issue for years now. it is his suggestion to uhad, et al to have students compete for the mascot’s position and give that student a scholie.

he’s been beating that drum for a while now.

  127. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:03 pm

opening day for the legislature tomorrow. go get em gamers. legalize some form of gambling and utilize our rich soil composition by legalizing marijuana. betcha both will bring million$ to the state.

no need be last in the nation in school improvement and construction spending per student. no need worry about racing to the top. no need worry about potholes (maybe potheads though). no need worry about water main breaks. change can be good.

  128. cheepono January 17, 2012 2:04 pm

destiny vaeao is leaning towards wsu. hope chow can steal one from leach!

  129. Pride. January 17, 2012 2:06 pm

Hey, don’t worry, I’ve been lied to

I’ve been here many times before

Girl, don’t you worry, I know where I stand

I don’t need this love, I don’t need your hand

I know I could turn, blink, and you’d be gone

Then I must be prepared any time to carry on

But minute by minute by minute by minute

    I keep holding on

Oh, minute by minute by minute by minute

    I keep holding on

“Minute by minute by minute by minute, I keep holding on,” for more recruiting news from Stephen Tsai.

Also waiting to hear on Rolo’s status. “Oh, minute by minute by minute by minute, I keep holding on.”

  130. Kevin January 17, 2012 2:07 pm

Legalize weed and I GUARANTEE people will be surprised at who will openly admit to smoking it.

    Just watch. 😎

  131. Pride. January 17, 2012 2:07 pm

    Keoni Bush-Loo leaning toward Nebraska.

Destiny Vaeao leaning toward Washington State.

We’ll get someone else. I’m confident in our Warrior coaching staff.

  132. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:08 pm

  133. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:10 pm

defferent? wth, meant different. see what happens when you smoke da hash buds. 😎

  134. primo123 January 17, 2012 2:12 pm

IF they legalize weed, i’m gonna open a zippy’s franchise…..lotta late night munchies gonna happen….

  135. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:15 pm

maybe time to buy zig-zag stocks.

  136. al January 17, 2012 2:16 pm

well after today…perhaps destiny will be in our future.

the recruiter is in samoa right now.

i think wazzu was in the picture before we got there.

  137. mikey January 17, 2012 2:17 pm

vili’s contract as an entertainer is for football only. he’ll only do appearances at other events as long as you pay him.

tsai’s been bringing up the mascot issue for years now. it is his suggestion to uhad, et al to have students compete for the mascot’s position and give that student a scholie.

he’s been beating that drum for a while now.

The more reason we should give mascot back to the student! The mascot should be represented at all the games by the students and for the students. Maybe that’s one way of getting the students back at the stadium.

  138. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:17 pm

plus wsu is in the boonies.

  139. al January 17, 2012 2:20 pm

cp…you seem to have many experiences with pakalolo…?

  140. madeinhawaii January 17, 2012 2:20 pm

Maybe there should be a mascot contest among students… say, the last scrimmage in Spring Camp? video and put it up on youtube… let the students select the UH Mascots for the following school year.

  141. madeinhawaii January 17, 2012 2:21 pm

Of course, without a scholarship or two up for the grabs, there probably won’t be any takers.

  142. Kevin January 17, 2012 2:21 pm

Primo…. No no no no… Need to go after fast food. I think Jack in the Box is a franchise. Not sure though.

You’d make a KILLING on bacon cheddar potato wedges and mozarella sticks.

Stoners are not compelled to eat full meals and the appearance of the foods I just described is the MOST appealing and they know they’d cook faster than most.

  143. Kaneohe Resident January 17, 2012 2:21 pm

Vili the “Warrior” is a laugh! Does his behavior on the field incite the drunks in the stands to act up even more? Is Vili Samoan? Or Tongan? Help UH recruit? With both sons going to mainland schools, who’s kidding who?

Maybe a chow dog (real chow dog) walking the sidelines would be a better mascot. After all, Navy has a goat, AFA has a falcon, why not a chow dog walking the sidelines.

  144. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:22 pm

as long as the mascot isn’t one of those guys in the green head-to-toe body suit.

  145. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 2:23 pm

Any official word on John Ursua yet?

  146. al January 17, 2012 2:23 pm

but if you are a native american samoan…

would you go where the recruiter is also samoan?

would you go where the recruiter has been there (uh) and done that (played there)?

would you go where the recruiter has also a double masters?

would you go where the hc is also well in tuned to what is important to you?

    how about food to eat?

    weather? family?

  147. Kevin January 17, 2012 2:24 pm

Stoners don’t like to or are not comfortable with dealing with sober people, so this causes problems with 24hr establishments that require server and customer contact. Speaking to a drive thru speaker is less intimidating for those that are not mentally impared. πŸ˜‰

Fast food places make MORE off of the fans of da ganja than restaurants, even Denny’s or Anna Miller’s.

  148. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:24 pm

al, i read a lot of articles.

    @al

Mahalo. I see a lot of Chad Owens in that boy.

  152. kev-1 January 17, 2012 2:30 pm

Is that little hippie governer trying to legalize weed or something?

  153. al January 17, 2012 2:30 pm

mascots…to be politically correct they should have two student mascots.

one real buffed out braddah prancing around, flexing, smiling, going into the stands and greeting all the girls, er, students.

and one real knockout, gorgeous student babe prancing around, flexing, smiling, going into the stands and greeting all the guys, er, students.

of course the mascot uni’s should be such where you could tell why they won the mascot’s positions.

and finally, you need to keep out the gramps and uncles from infiltrating the student sections (kk and j/j for example).

  154. mikey January 17, 2012 2:30 pm

Kaneohe Resident: Maybe a chow dog (real chow dog) walking the sidelines would be a better mascot. After all, Navy has a goat, AFA has a falcon, why not a chow dog walking the sidelines.

That’s a great idea! now have a Chow chow contest ‘who got that chow in the dog house’

I love animals as mascot and having Chow chow is a great excuse to have one now.

Are you listening UH media relations?

  155. al January 17, 2012 2:31 pm

    151…methinks he more faster.

  156. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:32 pm

anyone remember the Cheech and Chong Big Bambu album that had the big bambu rolling paper inside?

  157. mikey January 17, 2012 2:33 pm

If they ever have a Chow chow contest for mascot at UH game.

I’m gonna get one or even rent one to enter.

  158. kev-1 January 17, 2012 2:35 pm

dude . . . i don’t remember much about Cheech and Chong, and that’s not because I didn’t watch or listen. It is because of what I was doing when I was.

It is so hard to take Cheech seriously in his acting career nowadays because he will always be remembered for the old days.

  159. al January 17, 2012 2:35 pm

all student/athletes on scholies regardless of sport should have a mandatory attendance policy in place. something where they gotta show up to all on campus sports events and football games at home.

  160. jm2375 January 17, 2012 2:35 pm

re mascot – is the mascot at other schools part of the cheer squad (would the schollie come out of the squad’s allotment)?

I would much rather see a student getting a scholarship rather than actually paying some guy who doesn’t know the “rules”.

  161. al January 17, 2012 2:35 pm

there should be a tailgate tent for students set up. charge em ten bucks no alcohol and twenty for alcohol. (i.d. required, haha.) all you can eat pupus and beverages.

have the school buses drop em off right there.

  162. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:36 pm

no, not one chow chow. need something more local like one wild pig. one huge pua’a with tusks. one mean looking one.

  163. mikey January 17, 2012 2:37 pm

Congratulation to Bret, Aaron and Royce for great game at the all-star game yesterday

Also seen coach Tomey working hard at the sidelines.

  175. Couch potato January 17, 2012 2:53 pm

i figure a wild looking buffalo can do more damage than a wild looking pig.

  176. tommui January 17, 2012 3:08 pm

#144 Couch Potato: I would rather have as a mascot a green would-be Gumby who is a UH student on scholarship than a paid mercenary whose kids don’t even go to the UH.

ANd a Chow dog? – Why not? At UDub, while attending a football game there, the husky looked real good and worked for cheap.

  177. primo123 January 17, 2012 3:12 pm

    not a chow dog…..warriors peeps…warriors…..

  178. Couch potato January 17, 2012 3:13 pm

well it’s a good thing our head coach last name isn’t Finch. would look funny with finches as your mascot.

  179. Couch potato January 17, 2012 3:15 pm

and what school has a mascot tied in with the hc’s surname?

  180. tommui January 17, 2012 3:15 pm

    MADEINHAWAII #140

You may remember it was students at UC-Santa Cruz was given the right to select the school mascot.

    A sea slug!

Be careful of what you wish for! πŸ™‚

  182. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:18 pm

    Ahem.. Banana slug.

BTW, one of the better selling college shirts out there from a non-BCS school.

  183. bigislandkurt January 17, 2012 3:20 pm

yeaaahh! Forget “rainbows, rainbow warriors, or just warriors,” our team’s name should be Na Pua’a! Those of you who hunt know what I’m talkin’ about. Aint nothing more fierce than a cornered boar with 2 1/2 inch blades (tusk). They would tear a doggie to shreds.

    BIK

  184. Couch potato January 17, 2012 3:22 pm

no forget the athletes at ucsc also wanted the banana slug as the mascot. truly a team effort.

  185. primo123 January 17, 2012 3:23 pm

    not a pig either…………lol…..u guys are too funny…..no pig…no dog….no gecko…no toad….no chicken….no.no.no.no.no….

  186. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 3:26 pm

For national attention, for mascot, how about a mermaid?

  187. Couch potato January 17, 2012 3:27 pm

what about turtle, humpback, shark, owl, goose, or humuhumunukunukuapua’a?

  188. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:27 pm

I have a banana slug shirt and so does a friend of mine. Requested them from my cousin in Cali.

It’s an obscure shirt to wear and very unique. Looks like a cartoon character. Shirt I have is the slug with sunglasses on driving a jeep with a surfboard in the back giving the “shaka” I think.

  189. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 3:27 pm

    Or Shark?

  190. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:27 pm

    University of Hawaii Mongooses.

    (good lord.)

  191. kev-1 January 17, 2012 3:28 pm

IDEA . . . get plenty GECKOS in Hawaii. Maybe we could work out an advertisement deal with Geico and use the Geico Gecko as our “unofficial” mascot, just for profits sake. Still can keep an official Warrior mascot, but throw the Gecko in there too.

  192. kev-1 January 17, 2012 3:29 pm

    sorry primo123 . . . i never see your “no gecko” line

  193. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 3:29 pm

    Couch, humuhumu sounds good.

    How about a “couch potato”?

  194. Couch potato January 17, 2012 3:29 pm

  195. Couch potato January 17, 2012 3:30 pm

  196. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:30 pm

Interesting thing… Anyone ever been to a Warrior volleyball game?

The crowd chants “LETS GO BOWS”, even the students.

Can’t fault the PA announcer or media relations, or the scoreboard operator either. Everything for the Warrior Volleyball team is shown as WARRIORS.

    But…. The public speaks.

  197. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:32 pm

    Pig hunta….

Maybe UH can finally get Laulesi Fa’afetai and the Green Bottle Boys to perform at halftime from now on.

  198. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 3:38 pm

Guess a mermaid warrior would not be too cool

unless she was one big fish…

  199. primo123 January 17, 2012 3:39 pm

the more the mascot ideas come out….gecko…geico…etc..etc….THE MORE IT LOOKS LIKE THE MARSHMELLOW MAN is the BEST ONE!!!

you guys remember the MARSHMELLOW MAN????.

  200. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 3:40 pm

get one person in one giant oufit. when he walk by the visitor’s bench he unleashes a hundred or so of those buggas he has kept in a jar by his side. gurantee the mainlanders going run in fear. maybe even go on the field of play when the game is on. five yard penalty for illegal sub.

  203. primo123 January 17, 2012 3:41 pm

off the rocks at Ala Moana beach and swam as fast as I

  206. al January 17, 2012 3:42 pm

  209. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 3:44 pm

Hire those guys a the polynesian cultural center and let em loose on the sidelins and end zones. Flaming spears and conch shell chorus after every touchdown! Good way to sell Hawaii on tv too!

  210. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 3:44 pm

    Focus, ga las hoppas . . . focus. . .

  212. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:45 pm

RAIN BOWS… still happening because that is what the men’s basketball team IS. Rainbow Warriors.

If Gib no like, he can push to change. Their Addidas warm up gear says Warriors.

Personally for the MILLIONTH TIME ALREADY. Get all the men on one page as WARRIORS. The men’s programs are causing all the damn confusion… Warriors for some, den Rainbows only for baseball, den Raimbow Warriors for some.. JEEZ…

Only the Wahine have their heads on straight… RAINBOW WAHINE.

    C’mon guys.!!

  213. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 3:46 pm

  214. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 3:46 pm

RAIN BOWS at the bb game is one of the saddest…..chants…in NCAA history….KILL IT ALREADY!!!……

    RAIN…….bowssss…..RAIN…….bowsss……

    ugh!

  216. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:52 pm

    Sad is in perception.

When there were 10,000 UH fans all clad in white chanting RAIN…. BOWS during a TV timeout as we were up 15+ points over then #4 Michigan State at home, sitting 4th row DEAD CENTER court, I couldn’t tell who was being busy being all habut about “RAIN BOWS”… was too loud and PROUD to notice.

  217. Kevin January 17, 2012 3:53 pm

BUT I would prefer WARRIORS over Rainbow Warriors though, I’m just NOT ashamed of tradition.

  218. d1shima January 17, 2012 4:10 pm

    Whachu drinking today?

Hire those guys a the polynesian cultural center and let em loose on the sidelins and end zones. Flaming spears and conch shell chorus after every touchdown! Good way to sell Hawaii on tv too!

Wea you tink the current one came from?!?!? πŸ™„ πŸ˜† πŸ˜‰

  219. bigislandkurt January 17, 2012 4:20 pm

Now that would be an awesome name: The University of Hawaii Fighting Jellyfish! I could hear the chants now: Gooooooooooh! Fishhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Maybe our Wahine could be called the “heavy fisted titas” in honor of Kim Willoughby?

We all fear audits. How about The University of Hawaii Auditors? We could use the mighty Marion Higa as a mascot. Vili wouldn’t have anything on her!

In the heat of yet another “warrior/rainbow warrior/rainbows” debate, let us not forget that in this off-season, we can still laugh and have fun.

    Here comes Marion! Runnnn!!!!!!

    BIK

  220. bigislandkurt January 17, 2012 4:22 pm

Polynesian Cultural Center performers are all BYU students! Don’t think they would be too excited to cheer on the auditors….I mean warriors….I mean rainbow warriors…well, you all know what I mean! πŸ™‚

But now that Chow is coach, we just might be able to pry a few fire knife dancers out of Laie.

    BIK

  221. Stephen Tsai January 17, 2012 4:22 pm

The Hawaii Islanders used to have the Gecko mascot.

Great guy, too. (He was a Punahou graduate who is now big in the unions.)

And he could make a mean chili.

  222. Kevin January 17, 2012 4:22 pm

Let us not forget in this “off-season” there are other UH sports to follow as well.

  223. Kevin January 17, 2012 4:23 pm

With that being said, I hope “TONY” is at the Call The Coach Show tonight w/Gib Arnold.

Maybe Coach Gib might have some thoughts about Time Tebow.

(FYI, “Tony” looks like a “TONY”… fanny pack and all πŸ™ )

  224. madeinhawaii January 17, 2012 4:32 pm

    Tommui,

What’s wrong with sea slugs? Although I’m surprised that it’s hard to find any with all our school colors…

    http://www.richard-seaman.com/Underwater/Philippines/Nudibranchs/NembrothaCristata0306.jpg

Maybe we can just settle on vanna… and as a gift to our opposing team…

  225. jkjones January 17, 2012 4:41 pm

good get for Norm Chow with Chris Demarest as special teams coordinator and defensive assistant. We now have a 5-5 split on O&D and a solid duo coaching our DBs. Hopefully they coach up on technique as much as system.

btw, this is a marvelous opportunity for Inoke to continue a career in coaching. Adding Norm Chow to his resume is huge. If he needs inspiration, he need look no further than Ken Niumatalolo. best wishes.

  226. leelee January 17, 2012 4:48 pm

How about the University of Hawaii Tilapias.

  227. desmond January 17, 2012 4:49 pm

    Or the poi dogs?

  228. kaimiloa January 17, 2012 4:50 pm

    University of Hawaii Nuha Nene

  229. desmond January 17, 2012 4:51 pm

Or the University of Hawaii mokes.

  230. desmond January 17, 2012 4:51 pm

The wahines can be the titas.

  231. tom mui January 17, 2012 4:52 pm

MadeinHawaii #225 -have nothing against sea slugs! Wonder if the students at UC-Irving were the ones that voted for the Anteater as their mascot? (I got a nice photo of the statute that graces the entrance of their campus. Have to admit that it looks more interesting than the ones on the UH campus.

  232. cheepono January 17, 2012 5:06 pm

welcome to the ohana chris demarest! glad it’s official!

  233. Black mamba January 17, 2012 5:06 pm

Adams has officially decommitted to play for NIU. What did the coaching staff do wrong? I thought he was our best oline recruit.

  234. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 5:13 pm

    @BIK

Lol I thought that the BYU alumnus working PCC thing was just a rumor/insde joke!

    @d1shima

Lol I meant more authentic, and less cheesy than a big guy yelling “go warriors arrrgh” all game.

Wonder when the stadium authority is gonna do something about the sound system……

Finally coaching staff is completed!!! Can’t wait to see the new system in place!

  235. MattyBoy January 17, 2012 5:23 pm

    234,

Really? He did? Wonder what went wrong?

  236. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 5:29 pm

The University of Hawaii Red Ink Lolo’s….where we can’t pay our bills bcoz we pay for you to come and play us

  237. jr January 17, 2012 5:31 pm

I think night marchers or menehunes.

  238. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 5:32 pm

I’m not so torn up about loosing Adams, we got some good sized linemen comming in, just leaves another scholarship to award to another big boy! Anyone know if Mike Pennel chose to go to arkansas or is he visiting UH soon?

  239. BigHiloFan2 January 17, 2012 5:54 pm

dustin adams. sorry to hear you “decommitting.” best of luck to you.

  240. jkjones January 17, 2012 5:56 pm

decomits are not unusual when changeovers take place. Normally, one of the first items on the agenda a new coach goes through is the list of incomings. He will re-recruit those he feels will fit into his system. It takes a simple phone call or text to convey his love.

  241. hillmok January 17, 2012 6:09 pm

Adams looked soft anyway, and probably played against soft talent in South Dakota. If he were playing in Hawaii he wouldn’t be considered like he is now. One scholarship open to bring in another (Kiha Sai)!

  242. Tonofsushi January 17, 2012 6:09 pm

Check out the tweet from Jared Ursua to John Ursua, especially the birthday cake…

    ursua05 Jared Ursua

Happy Birthday John Ursua #futurewarrior instagr.am/p/iL7e3/

  243. Black mamba January 17, 2012 6:11 pm

He mentioned to the paper it was a lack of expierence coaching the oline. I didn’t believe him and I went back and the new oline coach has less then 2 years coaching the oline. Which means one thing, next years oline will not be to good. He was the best oline recruit they HAD, but Hawaii has its own problems in front of them. This is a speed bump. They have mountains to climb next year

  244. d1shima January 17, 2012 6:22 pm

    …broken clock

  245. Ipu Man January 17, 2012 6:23 pm

Best of luck to Dustin Adams. Black mamba, is NIU Northern

Illinois or Iowa or Iosaka, Japan?

  246. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 6:25 pm

243, we are just waiting for the official announcement about his commitment :).

  247. Black mamba January 17, 2012 6:25 pm

    Illinois

  248. hillmok January 17, 2012 6:27 pm

Adams is soft anyway probably would not be a starter. He plays against smaller opponents he would have been eaten alive at practice.

  249. Black Mamba January 17, 2012 6:34 pm

Soft? With offers from washington Illinois northern Illinois all of which are bowl teams how is he soft. When you’re 6’5 290 lbs people look smaller. I don’t agree with his decommit at all but do you blame him for choosing a place with 5 star facilities?

  250. desmond January 17, 2012 6:41 pm

No worries. Chow will replace him with someone even better.

  251. mo808 January 17, 2012 6:46 pm

We took a trip to vegas last April and this street magician did the most amazing trick in my own hand. He laid a fork in my hand and it started bending by itself. I finally found a video of this same illusion here. Stunning – http://bit.ly/fork_bending_magic_trick_video

  257. al January 17, 2012 7:17 pm

    to clarify a point…

chris wiesehan has four years of oline coaching and three more years as a tight end coach. tight end by the is a member of the oline.

i am certain that keith uperesa will also be available to lend a hand in that department.

i am not so sure that i’d give the past oline “mentors” much credit.

  258. MistahB84 January 17, 2012 7:29 pm

Other than Mike Cavanaugh of course πŸ˜‰

  259. Bowwar January 17, 2012 7:29 pm

Why did Chow & his staff let Adams get away?

  260. madeinhawaii January 17, 2012 7:36 pm

Let’s go get a wild boar for our mascot.

  261. Stretch January 17, 2012 7:37 pm

With all the talk of the mascot situation, a few years back the UH Cheerleaders competed in the Paula Abdul RAH show on MTV. They had one of the cheerleaders dress as a “Warrior”. I think this is what they should do. Vili is NOT a student so there is no connection to the school.

Around the 2:00 minute mark, they start showing the UH cheerleaders.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFCBpwp-T84

  262. Bugaz January 17, 2012 7:37 pm

It’s infectious!!! Underclassmen talking about playing for Chow and UH. I Love It!!!

  263. al January 17, 2012 7:43 pm

  264. al January 17, 2012 7:44 pm

260…adams bowed out on his accord.

  265. mikesmith January 17, 2012 8:23 pm

This stuff is crazy, commits, de commits, “We have the best recruiting coaches ever”, “what happened, what did our coaches do wrong”? “Wow, Adams is a beast, we are doing great in recruiting”….”Well Adams can decommit, he was soft anyway”…..crazy stuff man, crazy

  266. Susie January 17, 2012 8:25 pm

Any truth to josh huff from Oregon transferring to hawaii

  267. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 8:29 pm

    268…

None at all… And somehow people accuse me of starting rumors

  268. whitey January 17, 2012 8:31 pm

jeezy, try check your post, it is funny

  269. Derek January 17, 2012 8:32 pm

We will support and applaud committed recruits who want to be warriors. Period.

  270. desmond January 17, 2012 8:32 pm

who the heck is josh huff? And where did you hear he was coming?

  271. mikesmith January 17, 2012 8:34 pm

jeezyfosheezy don’t start up that again

  272. whitey January 17, 2012 8:38 pm

mikes, he not doing nothing. i just wanted him to look at 268 and see what he posted and that is funny.

  273. 1sportsfan January 17, 2012 8:38 pm

Rainbows are symbolic of the multicultural society we have in Hawaii. All football players are Warriors. Therefore it should be Rainbow Warriors. Hawaii is unique. Let’s make our nickname unique also. Did you notice that its harder for the crowds and cheerleaders to cheer “warriors?”.

  274. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 8:44 pm

    267. lol

  275. Bryson January 17, 2012 8:46 pm

Alot of talk on blogs about him being unhappy at Oregon…doesn’t mention transferring to Hawaii though..

  276. Susie January 17, 2012 8:47 pm

How is it me starting a rumor when i asked a question? Just because you’re an idiot doesn’t mean you need to come after others.

  277. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 8:48 pm

    272…

Just funny that there is a double standard sometimes….

Susie reads a possible tweet or post about Josh Huff coming which was a complete joke by the person who wrote it. She didn’t know any better but since the news could be possible great news IF it were true, no one is going to knock it.

But if it is possible bad news, it is horrible to post. I still remember posting about bad things coming down on UH during Moniz scandal. Everyone got pissed at me for it. Glad that got blown over though

  278. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 8:49 pm

277…. Good one Susie… I didn’t come after you…. you just have thin skin

  279. mikesmith January 17, 2012 8:53 pm

Let me try to help out here, Susie says:

“Any truth to josh huff from Oregon transferring to hawaii” that sounds like a question, like she is asking.

Now this would be taking that tweet and making it her own.

“Josh Huff from Oregon is transferring to Hawaii, stay tuned…..”

That would be taking the info and passing it off as her own and making a statement, not a question.

    There is a difference.

Again, no need to start that up again, jeezyfosheezy33.808flava

  280. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 9:01 pm

Well Susie needs to work on her punctuation if that’s a question…..And if your’e gonna ask a question like that, it would be smart to add where she got that read that because 80% of the people here never heard it.

Considering u said I should have mentioned where I found the info on Coach Thom from the beginning.

And if you wanna quote me, Why don’t you say “It is possible Josh Huff could be transferring to Hawaii”

U got some work to do on the nicknames too. Pretty whack is u ask me

  281. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 9:01 pm

    if*

  282. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:04 pm

If I am not mistaken, I read jeezy33 post something big was going to come out at UH. That afternoon, the point shaving accusation surfaced. He also pointed out some things about a player that I had been hearing on the side too.

I for one pay attention when certain people post (they probably know who they are), others not so much (I would probably fall in the “others not so much” category btw).

Susie . . . it seems like jeezy was just messing around and pointing out your post because of what happened the other day. No worries.

Gotta have thick skin on here sometimes.

  283. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:05 pm

uh oh . . . here we go again. round 2. play nice braddahs.

  284. mikesmith January 17, 2012 9:06 pm

She is asking a question, get over it, get over yourself, she is not stating information as if she is in the know, she is asking. You were stating as if you know it to be true and as if it is your own information. She does not need to tell us where she got info, she is asking not telling. You can’t get over the fact that you are wrong.

Don’t frown clown, we know you are down with the street cred Jeezyfosheezy33 unlimited flava productions ltd.

  285. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:08 pm

I don’t know . . . “jeezyfosheezy33.808flava” kind of has a nice ring to it. You should consider using it. Everyone needs a good rap name you know.

  286. bigislandkurt January 17, 2012 9:09 pm

Coach Mack is coming back? Wow.

    Stay tuned.

    BIK

  287. mikesmith January 17, 2012 9:11 pm

And Jeezyfosheezy, based on the amount of time you spent in here posting, you again are the troll not us, you were in here the other day for hours, I have not been in here for a while and you are up to the same old crap. You live in here, this validates your life. Leave your parents house and go get one. You need thick skin, you can’t stand the heat.

    Nuf said..

  288. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 9:12 pm

I dont care Mike Hawk. It is so easy to get in your head, that I just can’t help myself but get a kick out of seeing how frustrated you get.

I don’t even care what Susie wrote. I know it wasn’t true and know she had no idea. It’s just funny when people like you only want to know the perfect things that go on in this world.

If I report Hawaii gets a 4 star recruit, you would probably pee your pants.

If I report Hawaii loses a player, you probably cry, and wait till ST posts it so you can take it out on someone else. I hope you haven’t lost sleep on Black Mamba posting Dustin Adams has decommitted.

And for Black Mamba sake, the news better be true or the wrath of Mike Smith will be visiting him soon.

  289. bigislandkurt January 17, 2012 9:12 pm

    MistaB84!

No, for real kine. The LDS Church owns the Polynesian Cultural Center….along with its neighbor, the BYU-Hawaii campus. Most of the performers and workers at the PCC are BYU students who do so as part of their scholarship. Work study, if you will. Once class is over with for the day, they head on over to the job.

    289. Jeezyfo…..you are sad and pathetic. Sorry, you never have heard me react to posts about recruits, never. You are a wimp who claims to be the authority of UH sports on the blogs, you are sad, I am not frustrated at all, I am laughing at you, and many others are too. “If I report Hawaii gets a 4 star recruit…” Who the _ _ _ _ are you? Do you write for ESPN150? Are you are recruiting service? Do you really think people are hear waiting for you “breaking news”? Seriously, sad, you are not that important in here. Maybe not anywhere. You are a self proclaimed blog troll and you think you are better than others in this avatar world of yours. You are sad and pathetic.

Honestly I am not important either, the difference between us is that I know it.

  310. mikesmith January 17, 2012 9:28 pm

Pouting, can you read? You are a clown, Tell your mommy and dada goodnight.

  311. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 9:29 pm

You should tank it in Atlanta next year and maybe be the next OC at UH

  312. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:29 pm

just watched the highlight video of John Ursua. People have been comparing him to Miah and Pilares, but with the kids escapability and change of direction he looks like braddah George Ornellas from Saint Louis back in the day. Maybe faster, but makes it look effortless and hard to tackle.

  313. jeezy33 January 17, 2012 9:31 pm

    313.

Has way better change of direction at his current age in my opinion. Pilares probably has more breakaway speed. I think Ursua gonna be special though

  314. kaimiloa January 17, 2012 9:33 pm

You know you’re getting old when someone refers to George Ornellas as being from “back in the day”. It seems like “just the other day”.

  315. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:34 pm

possibly . . . sure does make it look like he’s not even trying though

  316. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:35 pm

actually, mid 90s isn’t really back in the day for most of us. Just trying to make some of the old guys on here feel older . . . hahaha

  317. kev-1 January 17, 2012 9:36 pm

    braddah was special

  318. kaimiloa January 17, 2012 9:37 pm

Interesting comments made by JD at today’s WAM committee hearing.

Athletics apparel making tons of $$$ for UH upper campus? Hahahahaha…doesn’t seem like that is the case at all, quite possibly the opposite.

thanks. to bad. looks like everythings gonna come down to facilities. we got the location,hawaii- we got the coaches, but we got no facilities.Sad, some HS have better facilities then UH. we could have a top 10 team every year, if the state would just invest. we would have to turn away recruits, not beg them or pick up scraps. the money football would bring in would be outrageous. hawaii would be a rich state this investment.

  329. BigHiloFan2 January 17, 2012 10:22 pm

Great job Hisatake talking us up. Great job.

Destiny, rememba dis. you cannot always choose to go Las Vegas if you gotta go on a mission. πŸ˜€

If you like be coached by da best who is trying to prove something to himself and everyone else, you gotta go with Coach Chow. and he is not in Vegas. he is here. with us.

There’s a new wave of bloggers here now, most of whom have never met, I surmise. There as a time when we we are all faceless names.

Rasu Begasu’s (las vegas) Remembrance gathering this Friday will draw a lot of mainstay bloggers… those who came together under the local Karaoke Call gatherings, which first started with Rasu in 2008. Here are the 2008 gatherings where many of us met…or really got to know each other:

    http://homepage.mac.com/smurashi/photos/karaokecall.html

See many of the personalities who still post here today.

Better yet, come down on Friday and meet the regulars in person.

Singing and RSVPs are not required. πŸ™‚

    QB Ursua commits to Hawaii

    10:00 PM, Jan. 17, 2012 | Comments

    Tom Zulewski

    Sports

CEDAR CITY – It was a scenario scripted straight from “The Wizard of Oz” that would have made Dorothy proud.

Although he had to do more than just click his heels three times, Cedar High senior John Ursua truly knows there’s no place like home. And the quarterback will be going home to play Division I college football.

Ursua has made a verbal commitment to Hawaii just two weeks ahead of National Signing Day on Feb. 1. Southern Utah – his brother, Jared, just completed his senior season with the T-Birds – BYU and Utah were among his other main choices, but the pull of going home to his native state and the addition of new head coach Norm Chow was too strong.

“With the fact that Norm Chow’s over there, the community loves that guy,” Ursua said. “With the whole new (coaching) staff he’s bringing in, I’m excited to see what he’ll do with the offense and how I can fit in.”

Hawaii finished the 2011 season with a 3-4 record in the Western Athletic Conference and 6-7 overall. The Warriors will be joining the Mountain West in the fall along with Fresno State and Nevada.

With an offense weighted heavily towards throwing the ball – Hawaii was ranked 12th in the FBS last season with 308.8 passing yards per game – Ursua likes his chances to compete for the starting job.

“At Westlake, we ran the spread offense with no huddle,” Ursua said. “Throwing (the ball) is my comfort and being in the pocket is exciting – being able to scramble, make someone miss and get the receiver the ball is something I’m looking forward to.”

Ursua said he had a visit from assistant coach Lewis Powell on Monday confirming the chance to compete for the quarterback position vacated by Bryant Moniz, who threw for 2,733 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2011.

“He told me they want me to try and step in right away to get the job. I’m looking forward to that,” Ursua said.

Ursua, who played only one football season for Cedar, finished with 1,005 passing yards on just 58 completions (a 17.3-yard average) and added 1,539 rushing yards with 16 touchdowns.

If Ursua isn’t able to step in and start at quarterback, he will also get his chance at a wide receiver position.

To Cedar head coach Todd Peacock, Ursua has been handed the opportunity of a lifetime.

“It’s an awesome experience to play for Norm Chow,” Peacock said. “With Hawaii being where he’s from and where he loves, I don’t see a better fit for John in the world. He’s happy and I’m happy for him.

“If they give him a chance to play, I think he’s a fantastic player, college or high school level. … he’s such a unique athlete, you don’t see kids like him often.”

okay dare you go, a chance in a lifetime to play for Coach Chow. Thats all it takes, a chance in a lifetime. for play quarterback right away, or wide receiver.

main ting, da brudda is coming to play for us! hip hip hoo raaayyyyyy?

  347. wafan January 18, 2012 3:55 am

Hope #2 is safe and warm down south. Looks like it is raining there.

  348. wafan January 18, 2012 4:01 am

Best line on TV this morning — it would be easier to list the schools that are open.

I think every inland school in Western Washington is closed. A couple coastal schools are two hours late.

  349. whitey January 18, 2012 4:02 am

morning wafan, think you going get sum more white stuff. stay warm

  350. BigHiloFan2 January 18, 2012 4:07 am

and… no talk down Dustin Adams. da brudda wen make All State outta Minot. because he is good and because he is big. he was recruited before Chowtime, for sure, but if was me, i’d give him chance for face to face with Chow. things change after a face to face. i’m thinking others are a little habut, but not Chow. give him chance for work his magic, no put him down because the ND brudda is ova dare and not here yet.

but if I was from Minot, and had a chance of a lifetime to play for Coach Chow, I’d be thinking of packing my bags and thinking of going to the tropics soon as I graduate.

and i wouldn’t be reading some of the posts made by people who don’t know my situation and are just jawing and guessing.

  351. Wes'side Warrior January 18, 2012 4:13 am

    Morning, Kekoa, Wafan, BHF2, Whitey.

Gotta stay warm! At least we not experiencing snow, but I had to scrape ice off of the windshield this morning. Careful, if you gotta head out, Wafan. I definitely don’t miss driving on snow and ice… with idiots that act like it’s the middle of summer, blazing by in their 4×4’s… (sometimes ending up upside down a mile or so down da road).

  352. whitey January 18, 2012 4:31 am

WW, just when you say upside down, going home yesterday, one car went off the road and into the gulch. the road side is wide and grassy, dry and absolutely no reason to go into the gulch, but the lolo went.

  353. whitey January 18, 2012 4:33 am

bhf2, dustin adams is big like the wisconsin linemen who ran us over. he is typical of the big midwest linemen and he going get bigger.

  354. wafan January 18, 2012 4:38 am

Too bad about Dustin. He has to do what he feels is best for him.

Funny how folks quickly thought it was something the new coaches did to make Dustin de-commit. Anything to point fingers and cast aspersions.

  355. whitey January 18, 2012 4:38 am

bhf2, plus he is an honor student, 3.5 gpa.

ahhhh…. you guys in da snow get all da fun.

remembering the good ole days. wuz July 1973. i wuz waking up in New Hampshire, just finished college and was gonna wait till November to come back home. but wen I woke up that glorious sunny morning in NH, i noticed was FREEZING outside. no can dat kine, no can, not in July. so i put in my 2 wk notice and wen speedy speedy hele back to Hawaii. πŸ˜€

yup, to all you recruits thinking about going to Washington, Oregon, if you go doze kine places den guarantee you going get da Miserables. πŸ˜† but I also say you gotta be Miserable some parts ah yo life to appreciate da rest ah your life. das why i say being miserable couple days a year, like away games in da cold, is good enough. πŸ˜†

    good morning gangeez,

bhf2 mahalo for the update, and that is a nice quote about coach chow. the new staff is humping it pretty hard to make up for lost time. exciting times for the program.

wafan, be safe, ugly weather your way, i know some of it has been making it over to Ogden, lots of snow and rain on the 808 boys at Weber State, oh well…. looks like a Ramen week for them, haha

have a good day one and all, blessings to everyone and GO WARRIORS

  366. Bulla January 18, 2012 5:11 am

here’s something interesting i saw at the Casino Del Sol All Star game that Tomey is going to be coaching at and I think Pollard is playing in. Sam Fehoko is playing in the game; the same player that left Texas Tech after 2 games because of a dispute about playing time. He left the team, and now he is representing them in a post season game. Is it just me or does that strike anyone as a “what’d you say Willis” moment? Great chance to play with everyone else who played a full season i guess………good luck and blessings to all the players in post season venues. πŸ™‚

so how come somebody make like Adams going anywhere else?????????????
