Full circle

In 1980, Dick Tomey, who was UH head coach at the time, gave Rich Miano an opportunity to play college football as a walk-on.

Thirty-two years later, Tomey is providing assistance as Miano prepares for his first head coaching job. Miano, who was hired by Kaiser High two weeks ago, said he has enlisted Tomey as a consultant. Both were on Greg McMackin’s UH coaching staff last year.

Here’s a recap of that staff:

• McMackin: Splits time between Las Vegas and Honolulu. His grandson, Taylor, will be a Kaiser High sophomore in the fall.

• Nick Rolovich, offensive coordinator: He is Nevada’s OC.

• Brian Smith, running backs: He is an assistant coach at California Lutheran, and is working toward a master’s degree.

• Gordy Shaw, offensive line: He is the line coach at Idaho.

• Mouse Davis, receivers: He is retired, and living mostly in Oregon.

• Dave Aranda, defensive coordinator: He is Utah State’s DC.

• Cal Lee, defensive ends: He will be working for the state and assisting at Kalani High. He also is running for an OHA seat.

• George Lumpkin, director of player personnel: He has re-started his cleaning company, and will be an assistant coach at Kamehameha.

Reading on AOL this moring…(10)States with the worst economic stability:

    1. Mississippi-the worst

    2. Arkansas

    3. Alabama

    4. Florida

    5. Georgia

    6. California

    7. South Carolina

    8. West Virginia

    9. Idaho

    10. Neveda

Looks kinda off-subject, but if you notice, IDAHO, as in Boise State…sorta connects to one of the reasons why BSU football wants to go to the bigeast, even at the cost of sacraficing their olympic sports programs.

Good Sunday All! Happy Birthday wishes to Lily & Myki! Best wishes to UH’s former FB staff, it’ll be exciting to follow Miano, Rolo, Lee brothers, and Aranda’s new teams. Summer is flying by–before you know it… UH’s first game vs. USC! What a game that will be! Go Warriors!

  16. Shoko June 24, 2012 5:18 am

Idaho Statesman columnist, Brian Murphy, writes…

“If Boise State gives one year’s notice to the Mountain West, it will forfeit its final year of league revenue (at least $2.5 million). If the Broncos don’t give one year’s notice, their penalty will be at least double. Boise State would owe the Big East $5 million if it does not join the conference in 2013.”

Hehe, times a ticking for BSU to make a decision.

Times a ticking for BSU’s decision. Their intentions might come on Tuesday when the BCS presidential oversight committee meet and discuss the proposed playoff system, as well as whether the MWC will get their BCS exemption.

Happy birthday to a great person – MYKI!

Of course BSU has a Title IX problem if they don’t get a place for their women’s team(s). Couldn’t happen to a nicer institution.

    Whoops. Sorry on the mis-birthday.

I have to look for my phone now. It has a text of today’s birthdays. This is what happens when somebody with no memory tries to do something by memory.

  39. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2012 8:44 am

ST: For some reason, I had the impression Lumpkin was retirement age, age 66 or older. Maybe, because he has worked at UH for so long. Interesting he has a cleaning business.

  40. koakane June 24, 2012 8:46 am

good sabath 808, everyone have a pleasant day

merry bday to mrs lilly and good (fill in blank) to myki

Well, a very un-birthday to you all.

  42. tommui June 24, 2012 9:33 am

#39 GIGI – George Lumpkin had a very successful commercial cleaning business for years. I think he gave it up when he joined Coach MacMackin’ staff at UH.

  43. Kevin June 24, 2012 10:01 am

BSU is not the only school sitting on a potential TITLE IX problem.

Needs a little push to get things going.

Needs to rally some genuinely concerned people…

Sometimes some tough love is needed to remedy a situation or at least bring more light to it.

BSU is not the only school sitting on a TITLE IX problem.

  44. Stephen Tsai June 24, 2012 10:13 am

OK, I found my phone. (It was on silent.)

Let’s see, wrong person, wrong sex, wrong day.

Other than that, happy birthday Chop Suey Boy.

  45. Stephen Tsai June 24, 2012 10:15 am

Idaho is an interesting state. Half of it is in the Mountain time zone, half in Pacific.

Boise was supposed to be a booming tech area, although they must mean the whole valley because the actual city doesn’t appear to be very big.

  46. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2012 10:18 am

ST: I thought potatoes were what drove Idaho’s economy, not tech. And certainly not tourism. Lol

  47. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2012 10:19 am

I’ve lived on the west and east coasts, but never in between. What am I missing?

  48. tommui June 24, 2012 10:21 am

  50. tommui June 24, 2012 10:23 am

Happy birthday to all (Lilly, ChopSueyBoy’

And don’t forget ChopSueyBoy’s great chocolate malts!!!

  51. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2012 10:24 am

Tom: When ER was shown on TV, hubby and I considered visiting Chicago. We might still go one of these days. But I hate being landlocked so I would never live there. That was one of my gripes about Germany – LANDLOCKED AND CLAUSTROPHIC.

    That and the frigid winter.

  52. wafan June 24, 2012 10:31 am

    Happy birthday CSB!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  53. d1shima June 24, 2012 11:18 am

IIRC BOI was pushing the tech build-up prior to the bubble burst.

Sun Valley (150 miles NE of BOI) kinda figured in the scheme as a getaway for tekkies in-state. At one time it was the country’s pre-eminent ski resort favored by many celebrities. My nephew attended a wedding there a couple of years back and was impressed with the natural beauty and the accomodations.

Recently, BOI is only able to ride that one-trick pony called B$-You football for its claim to “fame.”

  54. d1shima June 24, 2012 11:18 am

    Happy Birthday ChopSueyBoy!

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid June 24, 2012 11:21 am

  59. J June 24, 2012 11:25 am

    gigi-hawaii,

Look at a map of the Chicago area. Lake Michigan isn’t one of the Great Lakes for nothing.

  60. SteveM June 24, 2012 11:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

    HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY CHOPSUEYBOY !!!

  61. tommui June 24, 2012 11:34 am

    #59-J and #51 GIGI

The reason why Chicago is called the “Windy City” is that it is right on Lake Michigan – can’t call Chicago landlocked.

I never had been to Chicago during the 50s and 60s. Never knew there was anything between NYC and SFO/LAX – and then I had to go to Chicago and have been there several times since then. In fact our youngest got her MA at Univ. Chicago.

Really a great place to visit – at least during the spring or early autumn.

  62. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2012 11:43 am

J and Tom: Well, I’ll reserve judgment til I get to Chicago. Lol. All I know is that I was overjoyed when I got to Amsterdam and saw the ocean — after spending 1-1/2 months in Munich.

  63. SteveM June 24, 2012 11:54 am

Notice how most of the great cities in the world develop where it is accessible by water– ocean and large rivers. Early days of barges, boats, rafts and anything that floats to carry people and goods. Las Vegas might be an exception 🙂

  64. Dennis halloran June 24, 2012 12:15 pm

Indianapolis is the only major us city not formed be commerce over waterways and it is a fun city to visit.

Gigi needs a subscription to Coastal Living. I love getting my issue and then looking out my window to the boats going by in Newport Harbor

  65. J June 24, 2012 12:26 pm

    tommui,

I’ve only visited Chicago in the summer and winter. Same for NYC. Nothing like relaxing by an open window with a cool breeze coming off Lake Michigan in the middle of February. Maybe I should pick different seasons…

  66. SteveM June 24, 2012 12:28 pm

J — sounds like the outdoor air conditioning system I use when visiting my sister in Seattle. 🙂

  67. mctruck June 24, 2012 12:48 pm

Happy Birthday to, Chopsuey Boy, u da man. Same likewise to myki and Lily.

  68. PolyMom June 24, 2012 12:59 pm

Speaking of the USC game coming up. Last night here in LA at a dinner party…the game came up. Most of the USC fans at the party were saying things like…half the USC football team can sleep in as they expect the score of the game to be 75-7 or in that neighborhood.

Let’s hope and pray half the team does sleep in so we can surprise them! After a certain amount of time you can only take so much trash talking. I pray Hawaii can give the Trojans a run for their money. And Barkley going to win the Heisman…please spare me.

  69. Ipu Man June 24, 2012 1:57 pm

PolyMom, thanks for the inside info. What do the L.A. sportswriters, bloggers, say

    about the season opener?

  70. al June 24, 2012 1:58 pm

happy birthday chop suey boy…i hope you get the royal treatment with a 11 course dinner.

My uncle once got mugged in Chicago when a guy asked him for a light

for his cigaret. As he was getting out his lighter, wham! he got hit on

the head and conked out for a minute—long enough to lose his wallet.

    So, GiGi, don’t light other people’s cigs…

  82. Ipu Man June 24, 2012 2:10 pm

And my uncle was a navy seal!

  83. Ipu Man June 24, 2012 2:10 pm

  85. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2012 2:12 pm

Ipu: I hear ya. I got mugged at gun point in an elevator on Fifth Avenue, New York. The guy took my wallet and subway tokens. Boo hoo.

  86. Ipu Man June 24, 2012 2:12 pm

We will make a hundred today for sure.

    Go Warriors…Go Tsaikos!

Hmmm one hour and no posts….

Alrighty then…here’s a real old video by a Dutch film crew working in Hawaii in 1916, with footage of a Hawaii Consolidated Railway train on the Hamakua coast, Hilo Bay and Makee Island in Kapiolani Park…with surfers at the end…so it is a sports video.

  89. Wes'side Warrior June 24, 2012 3:38 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

Hope you all are having a great weekend.

Very busy time for us, as my oldest son gets ready to fly back up to Michigan to visit with his “childhood” friends… in the middle of all of these birthdays.

Always good to catch up with what former coaches and players are up to these days. Wishing the best for everyone on their respective paths.

Glad that Moniz had a decent game. Bummed that Torres struggled a bit. Hope da boyz light it up next Sunday, here in Georgia. Good to see other Hawaii product doing their thing too though… Utah Blaze’s Kauleinamoku and Ta’amu.

Looking over McTruck’s posted top ten states with the worst-stable (or least stable) economies… there’s got to be some irony in the fact that the worst 8 are BCS states. Don’t those states make anything in the form of taxes on these mega-media payouts? Did UH have to pay the state anything on that BCS (Sugar Bowl) check? Jus’ wondering…

Anyways, gotta go sleep already. Supa early wake up for me and da boi.

    Catch you all tomorrowz! Laterz!

  90. Ipu Man June 24, 2012 3:55 pm

    Thanks Pomai…7pm Go Rainbows!
