Friday ramblings

Sure, there have been problems with UH’s return teams this year. Here are some bright spots:

• Dustin Blount’s 24.8-yard average is third best in WAC games.

• In WAC games, UH is No. 1 in kickoff returns (23.8 yards).

• The kickoff team has not allowed a return past the 50.

* * * * *

A sportscaster said last night that Nevada and UH are chasing Boise State. Not so. The Warriors are in first in the WAC with a 2-0 record. The Wolf Pack and Broncos are 1-0.

* * * * *

The Wolf Pack arrives today, then leaves after tomorrow’s game. Part of the reason — OK, most of the reason — is finances. But thanks, guys, for contributing only a night’s stay to our economy. Then again, the Pack got stuck with a week’s stay when it was here for the Hawaii Bowl.

* * * * *

The Pack does not seem concerned about the travel, and going east to west isn’t as big a deal. But it should be worried about the Aloha Stadium turf. Players describe it as being “quicker” — which plays into Colin Kaepernick’s favor — but also harder. UH quarterback Bryant Moniz has said he does not like to slide on the turf because it is so hard. Several UH players are sporting scars on their elbows and legs because of the turf, which will be changed after the season.

* * * * * *

As promised, the hard cast was removed from safety Spencer Smith’s right forearm this week. He might be back as early as the Idaho game in two weeks. When he returns, that means a number change for Davie Graves, who also wears No. 9. Both will be on special teams.

* * * * * *

Avis has picked Rage777 as the winner of the Pack It vs. the Pack T-shirt. Text me at 256-0223 for dropoff arrangements.

Today’s prize is a green Hawaii Pride shirt. Wait, did they clear this with Pride? Anyway, if you wish to enter the free drawing, please post: Book ’em, Rolo.

Avis chooses a winner tonight.

Happy birthday to A-Sports.

Death to the Traitors – Beloved(US)

A line drawn in the sand

    And we both know

I’m not about to bury myself

    Sinking in my footsteps

But not coming up for air

And A firm foundation of beating hearts

Is blistering enough on the surface

Closing in and holding out my breath

    Hoping to mend the wounds

Opened by years of digging out

    We fight fire with fire

And you’ll run back to your

    Circles of friends

    They won’t help you now

We drew a line in the sand

And this time it’s now or never

Go ahead and burn your bridges

But only if you can swim

Deep in the sea of disbelief

This time your screams won’t be heard

    You will fight this battle

But we’ll take you out so quickly

That you and your so-called army

    Couldn’t see us coming

    Fight this battle

We’ll tear you down to the ground

    We can’t stop now

    We were born for battle

    Without vision we will die

    We were born for battle

    Against the tide of compromise

    There is life in this

The places so close can take you so far

We won’t trust our eyes to keep us there

One for OLDIE & KAZZ and other cell phone types (one of the last post in yesterday’s blog).

    Good Morning again

    Wife is like TV

    girlfriend is like MOBILE (Cell)

    At home watch TV

    go out bring MOBILE

    No money, sell TV

    Got money, change MOBILE

    Sometimes enjoy TV

but most of the time, play with MOBILE

    TV is free for life

but MOBILE if you don’t pay, the services will be terminated

TV is big, bulky and most of the time old!

But MOBILE is cute, slim, curvy and very portable at any time

Operational cost for TV is often acceptable

but for MOBILE is high and often demanding

    TV got remote

    MOBILE doesn’t have

Most important, MOBILE is two-way communication (talk and listen)

but with TV you MUST listen to it (either you want to hear the nagging or not)

Last but not least! TV does not have virus,

but MOBILE, yes, they do have VIRUS!.

    BOOK ‘EM ROLO!!!

#31… ST… I don’t doubt it’s much harder to run one back since this new Wedge Rule took effect.

So far, this year, there’s only been 26 kickoffs run back for a TD, by 26 different people.

There’s been 33 punts returned for a TD this year, by 28 different people. Three by Oregon’s Cliff Harris, and two each by Maryland’s Tony Logan, LSU’s Patrick Peterson, and Utah’s Shaky (great name!) Smithson.

We didn’t have a single Special Teams Return last year, with the old rule. This year, we’ve gotten close, even with the new rule. I think Blount will break a couple tomorrow night.

As big as this game is, it should’ve been sold out by Moday night at the latest! With the amount of fair-weather fans we have, I can’t imagine what ticket sales might be like if we were Indy, in the middle of the season when all teams are in conference play! They can’t even get up for a big game like this one! Chance to make a statement over a ranked team, and a solid 3-0 mark in conference play. Exciting offense, with the defense finally swarming like UH Defenses of old, and Special Teams continually improving… C’mon, people!

Checked out the menu for this upcoming game and looks and sounds good. Chicken Hekka really got my attention.

Back in the day a bunch of us used to gather at Mililani Golf Course on Wed afternoon, play twilight golf and then come back to the club house and we were allowed to cook on the lanai area during the late evening. If I cooked I’d make hekka or beef tomato using a hotplate. We’d bring our own drinks and stay till whenever. Good times.

Sounds like the same kind of time everyone has at the t-gate before and after the game. Fun, food and football.

    Enjoy everyone.

    Book em, Rolo!

I noticed this week at Dave Reardon has picked UH over Nevada. I guess after last week he’s convinced that UH is pretty good because he took Fresno St. But, I like Dave, he’s honest and he has a very nice article in today’s paper. It isn’t easy just picking winners. Nobody on the panel had a winning record last week. Reardon is doing the best at 68.9% in picking winners for the season so far. That’s pretty good. Against the spread, so called “experts” would love to have a 60% spread record which is excellent.

A lot of people, my included, feel that UH has a great chance to win this game this week. The offenses are so good that it’s difficult to have a good feel which way things are going to go. Funny things happen on a football field and sometimes the final score is shocking. A good example is yesterday between Kansas and Kansas St. Kansas was at home and getting 3 points. Final score: K-State 59, Kansas 7. That’s the kind of stuff I’m saying can happen. Yes, Kansas lost earlier to South Dakota, but they also beat Georgia Tech at home too. Anyway, Hawaii appears to be getting better with each game since the Colorado game and I still say we should have won that game. It should have been 24-0 at the half instead of 10-0. We let em off the hook. Right now, I’d sure like to play USC because I know UH can beat them. Are we on a “ROLL”. Maybe!

A special teams play could be critical, an interception for a pick 6, fumble return for a TD, kickoff return or punt retun, or a blocked kick. Maybe John Hardy-Tuliau will come up big again!

When tackling Kaepernick, we have hit him low and get at his legs. His legs are the key. He’s so tall that it’s difficult to wrap him up high. To bring him how you have to wrap his waistline and below to bring him down. Tackling or lack off will be big. Our defense can’t get too jacked up. Just play smart, fundamentally sound and stay disciplined and they’ll be alright. Stay humble and no trash talking. Good luck to all.

    Pomai, Al, et al,

Yesterday there was a discussion on Seattle, next year’s UW game.

UHLWC is working on a fundraiser on a private estate on Whidby Island. This would be on September 9, 2010 (Friday before game). All donations would be tax deductible as a UH FB Alum is up for donating the estate (his) and being the host. I look at this as a once in a lifetime opportunity and I know for a fact that two of my former teammates are slated to fly in for this from Chicago, when we discussed this at the FB Alum reception after the CO game.

This is in the preliminary stage and we will start working earnestly on details next week.

I will post details as they become available.

I just returned from Baja, Mexico and have not owrked on the football helmet project for a month. Look for an announcement on where the display will be shown and the times in future blog entries.

  129. papajoe2 October 15, 2010 11:27 am

A couple days ago, someone on this blog mentioned about starting the football games later, which is why we are having smaller crowds. I totally agree. In Hawaii, most families have both the man and woman of the house working. With the visitor industry our #1 industry, there are a lot of people who just cannot make the 5:30 start time. By the time they finish work, they still have to go home to bathe, then look for parking at the stadium. If they find parking, then have very little time to tailgate. Then they have to walk far to get in, be searched at the gate, buy $11 dollar plate lunch, $6 beer, $4 soda, to find some drunk people sitting in their seats. Enjoy the game, then cannot get out of the parking lot because they must wait for the busses to leave first. If the start time was pushed back to 7, 7:30pm maybe more people could attend. While still supporting the team, they instead, buy PPV or know somebody who has PPV, then go to that person’s house to tailgate, and not be searched and scream and yell all they want and go home after without fighting traffic. Or even go to their favorite watering hole to drink, have pupus, and watch the game. How many of those people are just getting too comfortable doing this. If no PPV, and the games started later, how many would go to the stadium? The stadium parking lot used to be like family affair with kids running all over, playing catch with their football. Yes, its still like that, but not as big as before. Its a situation of DAMN IF YOU DO, DAMN IF YOU DON’T. Earlier start time = less in attendance, but more publicity, and cheaper for the visitors to get a late night flight out instead of staying another night.

    Discussion?

Us old guys are going to have a hard time just watching TV.

In contrast, the Apple TV add-on has a remote with only 3 buttons. There were some techies who questioned why Apple added the 3rd button. Apparently, the previous version had only 2 buttons.

I’ve been a season ticket owner for 35 years since college at UH…I believe that the 5:30 pm start time has affected attendance and it has made it harder for me to attend since (yes) one of us works on the weekend. It seems like there is a correlation between moving the start time from 7:00 pm down to 5:30 pm over the years and the decline in attendance.

We surely aren’t making it more convenient for the fans, that’s for sure.

Bowwar, I too have been a season ticket holder from the 3rd year of Aloha Stadium. I did give up my tickets during the von Appen era because of work and I couldn’t even give the tickets away. A big group of us used to go to the games and buy our tickets together at the game, but the stadium was getting crowded so we couldn’t sit together any more. That’s why I decided to buy season tickets. I frequently attended games at Honolulu Stadium too. Until PPV, I would only go to games that I could attend and paid for individual tickets. True, there is nothing like being there, but as you get older, I think the convenience role plays a bigger part.

  146. Manoa Mist October 15, 2010 12:14 pm

I don’t even know why I still try with Avis. Some guys never get the message. You pine away, pine away and she just don’t care. She’s never going to pick me. Wrote a song about it, and it goes something like this: Book ’em, Rolo.

  147. Derek October 15, 2010 12:19 pm

First off, my wife and I were UH seasons ticketholders since 1969 at Honolulu Stadium right after we graduated from college until we gave up our tickets right after Bob Wagner was fired. After that, we went to some games at Aloha Stadium if people gave us free tickets, but we always subscribed to PPV when they started to offer them. We love UH athletics, especially football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball. We have been members or donated to Koa Anuenue and/or NaKoa at different times when the economy was better or when we could have extra money to donate. We love watching the games at home, especially when it is in HD. I look forward to the day when road games are shown in HD. We have gone to 1 UH football road games at least every year the last 4 years to show our support and we plan to go to UW and UNLV next year on Sept. 10 and 17, 2011.

As far as start time, I would personally prefer that the game start at 6:30 to 7:00. That’s just my opinion. By starting games at 5:30 p.m. it was really a favor for the visiting teams, especially the WAC teams. Well, basically we don’t owe the renegade teams and Boise St. any favors anymore. UH has been a good sport in accommodating other teams with their requests when they come to Hawaii. I have my doubts as to whether other teams help us when we go on the road. In the future, to me if UH can get a contract w/ ESPN then we will do what ESPN feels is the best to promote the game and scheduling. I’m all for that. Otherwise, I think UH should do what they think is best for the school and the fans and not worry about the visiting teams. If the visiting teams have to stay in Hawaii at some good hotel on Saturday night, so be it. No offense, but it’s business. Go independent, Go Big West! That’s what I think UH should do and I don’t think I’m alone on this. I agree with Bobby Curran.

I’ve been a season ticket holder since Da Termite Palace Days (60s) until 2000. However, LIMITED parking for handicaps and ‘fighting’ w/people who can’t SEE people in wheel chairs caused me to give up me season tickets and pickup PPV. PPV allows me to comfortably follow the Warriors from home.

  150. papajoe2 October 15, 2010 12:32 pm

Like I stated earlier, the longer you watch PPV, the more comfortable you get. Are there really a lot of fans out there that will be giving up their PPV game tomorrow to attend the game in person? Again, there is nothing like being there in person, but common, doyou really think they will give up their “home” game? Maybe the solution might be something like raising the PPV prices for bars and restaurants to something really, really high and lowering the ticket prices. I know that Oceanic charges businesses more than home viewers. Does anybody know how much they charge businesses for PPV? Isn’t it a tax write off as a business expense? By raising the prices for home PPV, we will be penalizing the elderly and handicapped people, and also the people on fixed income.

The other problem for PPV subcribers is the reluctance to pay for both the PPV broadcast AND tickets to the game. The would be the case for season PPV subscribers who decide to go to the game.

UHAD and Oceanic need to find a way to compensate or discount fans who want to go to a game, but don’t feel right about paying for both PPV and tickets.

Gigi: i went to an event last night at a new store in downtown Kailua called Mu`umu`u Heaven. The manager’s name is Tanima Quintano. The addess is 767 Kailua Road – the building is directly opposite the Kalapawai Cafe – just after crossing the bridge. Nohea Art Gallery is also in the same building. Parking is in the back of the building.

UH used to start the games late at night, which always forced teams to stay an extra night in a hotel. However, that was when Athletic Departments had a lot of money and didn’t worry about extra costs. UH also paid travel subsidies for most of those late kickoff years, paying for those hotel rooms and more. Now, Athletic Departments are squeezed and travel costs are minimized.

Many WAC schools are in danger of having to drop out of D-IA football if they cannot afford their losses anymore (NMSU, Idaho, SJSU) and UH could face a choice of an earlier kickoff time or paying travel subsidies. If UH wants to schedule nonconference games or games as an independent, late kickoffs would make sure that many schools will not want to play UH because of that extra cost.

No conference will want UH as a member if it insists on 8pm or even 7:30pm kickoffs unless it pays big travel subsidies. No nonconference opponent will come to Aloha Stadium for a late kickoff without a bigger payment from UH to cover the hotel costs.

  172. Okole Maluna October 15, 2010 1:05 pm

Yes it’s True The UH PPV have spoiled us.

Back in the early 70’s my wife and I as UH students started attending every game at old Termite King Street Stadium way back when.

Then when they move to Aloha Stadium we use to go from Noon till Midnight tale gating.

Yes they left the lights on and still didn’t kick us out back then. we use to fire up the hibachi after the game… Those were the good old days.

Then we move to San Francisco in the 80’s but anytime they came to Bay Area we were there for UH games. We missed all the good years of Paul Johnson’s tripple option days, but we still kept our 5 season ticket for almost 10 years till we came back just to see Paul leave and Wagner was OUT the door. Yes those were the good old days.

Together with our 5 year old daughter who we though was our Savior with New coach (Now who was that guy) with West Coast Offense knowledge and have been season ticket holder of 49ers with many SuperBowl Championship though like ‘Hugh’ we found a new leader.

In the end our daughter kept saying to me ‘Dad do we have to go to the Game?’

I said if we are true Warriors “Yes we must Go to the Game”

We suffered thru the NO WIN season. Yes those were the forgettable Years.

We first started with PPV cost only $75 for the whole season. WOW what a deal!

Now it cost almost $500 but we are still able to watch every game at home. we now have tale gate at our house and no traffic. We do still occationaly attend game at Aloha.

And if you can’t watch live, You must go to see this Match against Reno. It Is the Game of the Year. A No. 2 offense against No. 4 in the Nation. Boy what a match it will be.

    GO Warriors! Eat Dog Meat!

Yup– that’s why I don’t have a white UH shirt, especially when having a few hours of tailgate snacks before the game. Besides, it makes me look….heavier. 😐

  175. In the last few days I cannot recall anyone really mentioning concerns about penalties.

Since the LaTech and FSU games, we’ve had quite a few penalties against our offensive line and while they obviously didn’t cost us the game, tomorrow it will.

The offensive line play has been MORE THAN HALF the reason why our offense is firing off so well, especially in our rushing TDs. One part of me wants them to be looking over their shoulder at the WAC zebras and the other part wants to them just play like they have been because it’s working.

As usual, I am skeptical about the WAC officiating considering we are not ranked but Nevada IS….

If you believed for one second that in 2008 against a ranked FSU team in the valley, we were hosed on a lot of calls. Why not? It’s in the WAC’s better interest to have two undefeated and ranked opponents going head to head.

It’s not a conspiracy theory, it’s BUSINESS and lately that is how college football business is being handled. Match-ups are CRAFTED as much as conferences are for the sake of the almighty dollar as opposed to athletic competition results.

So ultimately, the officiating is going to be a BIG deciding factor in this one.

We beat the officiating and a ranked opponent before on the road.

Can we do it again tomorrow if it comes down to that?

    Kazz,

I think that 5pm or 5:30pm kickoff times allow teams to leave the night of the game, that seems to be the feedback that UH got from the WAC. The schools that are the *most* concerned about travel costs for football seem to be the ones left in the WAC (SJSU, NMSU, Idaho, etc.). Nevada only complained about travel costs to Hawaii for nonrevenue sports.

UH is sympathetic to the travel cost problem–to save a night of hotel stay UH flew to Vegas after the Fresno game.

  183. madeinhawaii October 15, 2010 1:35 pm

Earlier hours for football appears to work against attendance at the Stadium. Less time to prep for the tailgate.. less time for tailgating… less time from work to the game.. If you’re not tailgating, there’s no time for dinner before the game. You’re stuck eating stadium food or waiting till the game is over. In the games we attended in the past, unless we found someone to to cover for us at work, we barely got there at kick off or a little after. Now it seems like that would be after the first half.

  184. Garret October 15, 2010 1:35 pm

Now that the swap meet is canceled for UH game days, UH could have day games at the Stadium. That could be interesting to try once per season to see if that got more people to attend the games…I know the problem of soccer games and Saturday jobs, but schools around the country seem to be able to get good attendance for day games. I remember a big day game at Aloha Stadium (Elam kick to win?) and it was nice to have that different experience.

Of course, this would only work if ESPN wanted it to work. Getting games on national TV would be more beneficial than anything else…if ESPN has no space for day games on their networks or GamePlan, I guess UH would have to play in the evening.

  186. madeinhawaii October 15, 2010 1:39 pm

Thing is, we are a tourist, military driven society here in Hawaii… a very large percentage don’t all get weekends off. If populating the PPV commercial sitesa around the islands generates good capital for UH, it may be the way to go.. then having the TV guys go around an feed images of those crowds back onto the big screen at the stadium may be what has to be done to provide some kind of positive feedback to the players.

    I dunno… catch 22 here.

Isn’t it funny when visiting teams come to Hawaii wins, they don’t complain.

They always say they had a great time and coming to Hawaii was wonderful and the beaches are terrific and the hotel accommodations are first rate. Wisconsin has never complained when they came here. USC, they love it.

Only when teams lose to Hawaii at Hawaii do they start to whine and complain. Give me a break!

The first thing visiting coaches and players want to do when they lose to us is they want to get out of here, quick! I guarantee you when we beat the other renegade team tomorrow that they will start complaining about something. Guarantee. As far as I’m concerned, Nevada, we don’t need you. We will be just fine. After they lose Kaepernick this year they will be just another cupcake team!!!

    RE: #184

Garret — that’s a really big gamble to take with the UH AD’s piggy bank unless potential lost ticket sales revenue is more than covered by ESPN TV money…for all games.

I think people know how I feel about my sun-cheapened Aloha Stadium MAUKA sideline seats in September & Oct so I won’t say any more. Except that a there’s a lot of new young people in the section this year. Elders I saw wrapping damp paper towels around themselves to shield the sun are gone.

Gotta pick up my new glasses. Be back later.

  203. madeinhawaii October 15, 2010 2:13 pm

Hawaii has some of the the worse UV rays in the world. Do you really want the fans out there for 3-4 hours? yikes! Buy sunscreen stock!

  204. If UA comes out with a GREEN jersey, I’m trashing the black one for good.

All other shirts I wear to UH games in other sports are mostly green anyway.

  205. Garret October 15, 2010 2:16 pm

    SteveM,

That is why I was saying that UH could try *one* day game during a season, and they should only do that if it will be picked up by ESPN. Maybe if it was once per season then the attendance would be higher because some people that cannot go to night games might attend (for example, some parents won’t bring their kids to games that end too late so family/kids turnout might be greater for a day game). Also, it would be considered special if it is just once per season. So, overall attendance might go up.

If ESPN picks the game then UH could come out ahead in the piggy bank (moving kickoff times can get ESPN to kick in $$$).

  206. Souljah October 15, 2010 2:17 pm

People on here are trying to suggest/justify reasons to show up to the game or not to show up…but the main group everyone should be concentrated on showing up are the STUDENTS!!! First of all, it’s FREE. Secondly, they have bus service to and from the campus. Thirdly, everytime i look at that section it’s the least filled. Does anyone have an explanation as to why? I mean a good reason why…I digress

  207. Oh!

I know what to wear now for tomorrow!!!

Yeah! This will surely tick some people off!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  208. Souljah,

There is a Pizza Party thing tomorrow for the students. Sponsored by Papa Johns and maybe Pepsi too… can’t remember. Free pizza and pepsi tomorrow for the students. South endzone concourse I believe.

  209. Garret October 15, 2010 2:19 pm

UH is providing free tickets to the game for the students, free bus transportation to/from campus, and free pizza for UH students that go to the game. I hope that a LOT of students show up on Saturday and that they are loud. There isn’t much more that the Athletic Department could feasibly do to get the students to the game…and they aren’t even paying the student athletic fee yet.

  210. madeinhawaii October 15, 2010 2:22 pm

Then again.. maybe we can spook the other side with a UV scare? It’ll be our “oxygen tank.” Have our UV shades up on our side… coolers… portable AC… fans over piles of ice…and every game we start with a Surgeon General Warning on the big screen.

  211. Just wondering…

Who here actually subscribed to H-Mail?

I’ve had it since it came out years ago.

  212. Souljah October 15, 2010 2:25 pm

Kazz and Garret, I know…how much incentives do we need to give the students to go and cheer loudly? What’s going to happen with bball season, even though it’s on campus?

I’ve had student season tickets for 2 years, like 4 years ago, and I swear can we please get the students to not be drunk either (part of the reason they aren’t in their seats).

You want to know why the student section is empty? Answer is they just don’t give a rip for sports, any sports. For years the softball games have been free, the stadium is right there on campus only a short walk from the dorms, and yet there is only a dozen kids that show up. That tells me they don’t care, now I don’t know about the SSC and volleyball but from what I hear there a few that show up for games but not in the numbers that there should be, and for football all you have to do is look at the student section an see it on a good night only half full, they just don’t care, which leads me to think that this is not a sports minded school or even close to it.. Sad……..

  218. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 2:40 pm

    Pomai,

I had absolutely no interest in sports when I was a UH student. Zero interest.

I became interested only after I married my husband and he began explaining the rules of the game to me.

  219. The involvement of the student body for “mid major” schools is quite common and NOT restrictive to UH Manoa. Big schools (which are always compared to UH for some reason in topics like this) have the advantage of a history of successful football teams that instantly make students feel part of the university in addition to academics.

You have to win a lot to really draw students if you are not a school like a Florida or Alabama.

That’s a fact stretched all over the country.

Not an excuse, but a fact.

Until we can improve on things at our level of reality, then there is no point in trying to compare ourselves to schools with GIANT budgets.

If someone cannot learn to walk, it’s a waste of time trying to run a marathon.

And have some quality control over the wrapping/tying of the shirts. Such a dud when a shirt unravels as soon as it leaves the barrel.

And another thing, if you are going to sign up for that football throwing game at the end of the 3rd quarter, make sure you look good throwing a football.

  224. Guy in the office October 15, 2010 2:55 pm

When I attended UH, we would park in the quarry and walk to Honolulu Stadium, sneaking in wine and other spirits and had a grand time along with a huge student section. Sadly, that’s no longer the case. Build a stadium at the Honolulu Stadium Park/Bowl O’Drome site, revitalize Moiliili and the students will return. And don’t worry about the traffic mess. It’s bad around Halawa, too.

On another note: PPV was a mistake. You offer PPV when there is demand for it (sellouts every year like at Michigan or Alabama), not because you’re in dire straits to balance your athletic budget. Then again, I was happy that my dad was able to watch PPV until he passed away. And there’s no taking back PPV now. It’s become too popular and an affordable way to watch UH sports when you gather 10 (and often more) people for a game.

  225. Michigan Warrior October 15, 2010 2:55 pm

It seems strange that Hawaii has a problem with starting games early on Saturday. Every other school around the country has the same issues to deal with, in regards to kids sports, people working, etc. And yet, games are easily started at noon or 1pm, with stadiums at or near capacity. Is it just that they all have larger fan bases? I mean, we’re all going through these tough economic times together.

It seems that there is a large chunk of fans that do want to attend Hawaii’s home games, but are stuck at work, or have kids participating in weekend sports leagues. Would it be too difficult for our little leagues, etc. to avoid scheduling games on weekends when UH plays home games? As far as those that work, well, we need the money to survive, so how would we work around that issue?

I do recall those later starts. I’ve gone to sleep around 5am or later in the past. I do appreciate the earlier starts. At the expense of fans who pay to fill the stands, earlier starts saves lodging costs for visiting teams, as stated above. It also allows for more exposure to east coast viewers. If we could figure out how to get the stadium filled during a midday start, we could subject visiting teams to another of our advantages… heat and humidity. I mean, we were stuck playing in freezing temps (and snow) in the past in away games… we can repay the favor.

Good thing you guys brought up the students too! There has to be something we can to do get the student body more interested. Don’t tell me all of them are the ones who are working on weekends and can’t get to the games! Perhaps a survey of the student body might benefit the UHAD in future planning. Not only start times, but also “Do you work on weekends during UH’s scheduled games?”, and “Do you attend UH’s athletic events? If yes, do you attend games at these venues: __, __, and/or __? If not, what might make attending games in person more attractive to you?” Perhaps even posing these questions in a poll in the SA. We need some input to make changes. We can’t be satisfied with this half-baked product.

  226. The thing with the students and how UHAD tries to reach out to them or not, is tricky and it’s not a one-sided argument.

Considering the 10 million dollar hole Jim Donovan is looking at, the time to make some money and SAVE the entire department has got to be his primary concern and the concern of those working for him that can assist with this problem.

Sure the student fee has passed and about 1.5 million will go to UH and that’s one way of tapping into the problem, but it’s apparent that UHAD is not ready to focus on a plan to really drive student body involvement.

Now there are two ways to look at it:

    1) The EASIEST thing to do is to call UH athletic personnel lazy and whatnot. Easy for us to say, we are not seeing what they actually do on a daily basis.

    2) Look on the other side of the fence and realize that through students, not a whole lot of money is going to be made, in fact, more might be lost depending on how UH approaches things.

Before the fee, student tickets were $5.00 or $3.00 at some events and $8.00 at Aloha Stadium. Now, what I am going to say is going to be really unpopular with some, but the fact remains, if you are in charge of a department that is $10,000,000.00 in the hole and you have to worry about shrinking this for the sake of the ENTIRE department, what customer demographic will you be concerned with about increasing? The $8.00 – $3.00 crowd or the Premium Seat Contribution season ticket holders shelling out about $400.00-$600.00 a season? On a marketing and sponsorship level, who will you be more concerned working with while keeping the RED $10,000,000.00 figure in mind as you boss evaluates you on this? The steak plate lunch wagon or the multi-million dollar soft drink corporation?

YES, more can be done to serve all sides of the spectrum. From the fans with minimum income to the ones with the largest. From the companies that can be potential sponsors with little capital to the BIG ones, the opportunities are endless.

Does UH’s athletic department have the right amount of personnel to do all of this? Well, right now and in the past no, as it’s not being done. It’s about balancing your priorities to fit the requirements of your job.

I don’t know what a $10,000,000.00 deficit feels like hanging over my head, but damnit, if I can find the people that can help trim this thing down, I’m going to work with them on a more frequent basis.

  230. Michigan Warrior,

What schools are you referring to? Sounds like those big schools again. We cannot compare UH to these programs. We’re better off concerned about competiting with schools that are at the same level as us as far as athletic history, budget, on-campus student life, etc…

Schools like Michigan, Ohio State, and Nebraska should be able to hold a football game at 7am and all the students will show up. If not, something is wrong out there.

I doubt you will get many to show up for a UNLV football game at 7am or even 1pm.

this might sound strange, but if the PPV price were lowered it would do two things: 1) allow more people to order/watch it, thus gaining more fans and 2) make it more reasonable for people who have already paid for the PPV package to say “you know what, I think I’ll go to the game this week.” There is no way that most people will want to spend as much as they do on PPV now and just not watch it and pay to go to the game instead.

  241. Would it be a morbid statement of me to say that once the older generation of UH fans have passed on, then UH should considering trimming down or getting rid of PPV?

To me, I can understand it’s use for those that are physically unable to get to the stadium, but for people my age and even slightly older, there should be no excuse unless there are prior engagements or family events (i.e. wedding, funerals, kids playing in sporting events, etc…)

  252. Turfwar October 15, 2010 3:20 pm

Interesting topic today about game attendance. I recently talked to a top executive who runs the company that provides the HD video truck that is used to broadcast the UH pay-per-view games. The reason these games are in HD and others are not is because of attendance. The costs to televise in HD and regular broadcasts do not differ significantly but JD and others at UH are following whats happening in many other major cities across the country. Pro teams are seeing a decline in attendance since the advent of HD tv. Many fans are choosing to stay home to watch and JD is worried the same will happen here. Thus only the pay-per-view games will be in HD. And I gotta admit I too have thought of not going to so many games if all the sports were televised in HD. The ability to SEE EVERYTHING so much better verses the costs and effort of driving, traffic, distant seats, etc. makes a lot of sense. Yes it’s not the same but the truth is that I can get just as excited at home with just my family around.

  253. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 3:23 pm

Turfwar, ditto. You stated my opinion very well.

    Brantley got 7,

    McElroy got 9,

    Mallet got 21,

Gabbert got 16, and Colburn leapfrogged Gabbert with an additional 106 votes.

  255. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 3:24 pm

Wahine volleyball has almost always provided a good product.

turfwar . . . you bring up an intersting point about distant seats. I have been to Aloha Stadium many times and have often been in “bad” seats. I have also been to several mainland stadiums and have never been in a “bad” seat. At UW, every seat is a good seat as far as visibility is concerned. Now I know UW stadium is probably not as big as Aloha, but still. Also, Quest field . . . not a bad seat in the house. Is it Aloha Stadiums layout, or am I just imagining things.

    I dunno . . . I could be just imagining things.

kev-1… I went to ONE Michigan game in the Big House. It was a bad seat, in the sense that I’m not too tall, and we stood the ENTIRE game! I had to keep positioning myself to see between the people in front of us. It was more irritating than anything else.

Somehow, UH needs to do a better job of promoting interest. Maybe on campus pep rallies, a team walk through campus, guarantee “A” grade in one test for every home game you attend, burning of opponents effigies…

Back in the mid-70’s the CC students lobbied and received student ticket prices to football games. In fact, tickets were sold on campus.

If it is now an issue of the student fee then charge the CC students a slightly lower ($25?) fee and provide the football tickets. A bit higher ($50) and throw in the BB, VB, . . . tickets, too.

  281. Derek October 15, 2010 4:00 pm

During the Tomey era, there was no pay per view. He came at the time when UH was down after Larry Price and his dreadful Hula T. Tomey came in and gave some instant credibility since he coached at UCLA and prior to date w/ Bo Schembecler. UH started to pay some big name teams like USC, Oklahoma, Iowa, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Arizona St., and won their share of games. It was real exciting. The offense was predicated on trying to win in the 4th quarter, and play tough defense, especially goal line defense. Added to that we had characters like Jesse Sapolu, Blane Gaison, Jeff Duva, Falaniko Noga, Gary Allen, David Toloumu, Semeri Ulufale, and my all time UH name, Itai Sataua. It was a happening! Tailgaters came early at 2:30-3:00. We had so much fun and we drank so much beer, and food. We were young then. Tomey is the one who started it, along w/ Ray Nagel who got us into the Western Athletic Conference. The big game of course, was playing BYU. It would be a sellout every time. We booed Micah Matsuzaki to death, because he went to St. Louis and went away to BYU and because he was a good player. We wanted him to play for UH. Also, the BYU connection to Kahulu like Itula Mili, Lakei Heimuli, and Mark Atuaia. UH had the largest crowd in those eras. There was no PPV then. Games would start at 7:00 or 7:05 and the games would finish at 10:30, maybe close of 11:00. Then we would go back to the cars and tailgate again another 1/2 to 1 hr and then go home after the traffic cleared out. It was great spending time with out best friends on football Saturday. Like everything, the luster loses when we started losing more. Things go in cycles. Boise St. will come down eventually, Nevada will come down next year. Texas, Florida, USC, Penn St. is starting to fall now. Nebraska and Fla. St. are coming up. They key to having more fans coming is to have an exciting, winning product on the field. I long for the day when we have a rock em sock em defense who takes no prisoners. Plus, with our potent offense we would start dominating teams. The last Pied Piper was Colt Brennan.

  282. Michigan is Michigan.

    UW is UW.

Again we cannot accurately compare UH to these programs in terms of established traditions if we are trying to locate the root of the problem with the student body coming out for games and the general public.

Plus, culture has a lot to do with it.

Who thinks a student section at UH that stands all game long won’t eventually get a headset radio, saimin, or a newspaper thrown at the back of their heads???

The fuddy duddies got all huffy at Warrior Volleyball last season and W-Doc even told me that there were people FAR away from Alan Hackbarth’s performances were complaining that he’d just sit down.

For cryin out loud! It’s a commercial break and he’s not even dancing near you. What the eff??????????

I’m just glad that I saw more and more young people at the Warrior volleyball games last season. As evidenced by JM’s daughter and friends and even other groups of younger girls I saw at the games trying to get photos with the players, looks like the Warriors are starting to attract that “tennie-bopper” crowd slowly back to the SSC.

That place needs to be an INSANE ASYLUM for Warrior volleyball again!!!!

If UH had a “Coach of the Year” award for it’s coaches, Charlie Wade should have won it. Lord knows the MPSF SCREWED HIM on that honor last season!!!!!!

  283. Gigi,

Attendance was a joke in 2007 considering the attention the team was getting.

To only have come over 40,000 for three games of the season is pathetic considering the expectations and the superstar status of Colt Brennan.

  284. wafan October 15, 2010 4:06 pm

    GG . . .

Nah, not burned out. More like getting tired of always being blamed because the kids do not pass their state tests. Why not go after the parents?

Been getting emails from parents who tell me I should change their kids’ grade because of some sad excuse. Yesterday, Kyle’s mom said that he was absent for a week and so he should have extra time to finish the assignment. The district policy is one-for-one — one day absent = one additional day upon return. Kyle was absent 3 weeks ago. Duh. I am not going to give the kid a break. Kyle and his parents sighed the syllabus acknowleging they understoon the stated district, school, and class policies.

Darn helicopter parents. One of my former kid teaches at a university. He said they are seeing the helicopter parents there, too. Cannot wait for these kids to go get a job. Will their parents hover there to?

Derek.. thanks for recalling my memories too! Not the drinking part, but most everything else. BTW… the Ulufale family used to be one of my Honolulu Star Bulletin customers, way back when. Big family! Parents were always smiling and so happy. All those boys were big! Got my left wrist broken playing street football against Tino (between Semeri and Mike, in the family). Graduated with one of their sisters from Campbell. Those were the days!

  288. Michigan Warrior October 15, 2010 4:10 pm

When one considers that Hawaii has the highest incidence of skin cancer.. these afternoon games are worrisome. They may sell TV.. but not seats. At least not until they put a roof on the Stadium…

Worked the North Tunnel during football season at Aloha Stadium. Those days sure were a lot o fun!

Biggest guys I saw then were from Oklahoma. Dang! The Roberts touring buses shook everytime one of them got off, and eventually on.

Most disciplined band to appear was the USC band. Got off their buses at the top of the tunnel with a cadance and high stepped down the road into the tunnel and out onto the field. Hey, the Kahuku band was the most disciplined high school band.

  294. al October 15, 2010 4:24 pm

    catch 22…so many say our attendance is poor because of two things;

    one, poor alumni support

    two, poor student attendance

    (just two)

poor alumni support is the product of the poor student attendance. think about it, as students many never showed up for the games.

oh blame it on the commuter campus…right, that’s bogus. students don’t feel connected to the athletic teams becuase that is how the school has been run for years. its just not tradition as at the successful ones. and why shouldn’t it? its the only football game in town. i ain’t buying that folks rather go to hs sports. that isn’t so anymore these days. when was the last time 23,000 watched a hs game?

does the uh even promote the sports at campuses?

what no bonfires? rallies? sound corny? eh, bust out an array of beer, pizza, bands, and they will come. women’s nights at rallies? that’ll do it. (for starters anyway)

yup, friday night rallies could help do the trick at least get some blood flowin and thinking about the football team.

free tshirt giveaway with uh logos and stuff that have been designed by some younger thinking minds. incorporate the cost in the student fees. show up at the game with your shirt and get a free volley ball ticket or something.

    oh well. go warriors.

  295. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 4:25 pm

    Wafan,

I once complained about younger daughter’s math teacher by writing a stink letter to the principal with copy to the teacher.

I hated the way she taught. Would force the students to figure out the answer, and then spend the last 5 mins of class time explaining the answer.

Daughter was so confused as there was insufficient time spent on the process of getting the correct answer.

Result: that teacher is no longer at the school.

Irony: Older daughter is teacher and chairman of the math dept.

  296. Wafan,

Yeah the USC band is so disciplined that they are so focused in on their same three songs they play that they disrespectfully ignore the script and play over the home team’s bands.

  297. madeinhawaii October 15, 2010 4:29 pm

    al,

I gotta agree. UH should have some big screen designated areas to show the games for students and faculty. No charge. If bunches of students get together and start to bond, they end up making plans to go to the stadium for the real thing.

Dorms should have a contest amongst each other… costume?

    Frats and sororities, too.

  298. Al,

    Bonfire? 😯

But seriously though, one decent sized-venue at Manoa is Andrew’s Ampitheater. Lots of space to hold rallies or concerts with room for concessions and whatnot and in close proximity to the dorms and apartments.

Plus, it’s a walk away from Campus Center which they can also open up late at night and have stuff going on up there like at the game room or something.

  299. Made,

Garans get plenty “bonding” going on in the dorms. 😆 😆 😆

I mean.. if Nevada can call their version of the spread the Pistol and say they invented it.. why not call ours the Kiko and say we invented it. Then maybe we’ll get more national attention and respect?

I agree that all these excuses for not going to the stadium is bogus. To go to the Fresno game, we drove for 9 hours, parked on the street, paid $50 extra just to buy tickets (from UH), paid for a hotel room and paid for $60 in gas. If Hawaii is ever going to be a top tier program, the least the fans can do is go to the game. Especially when it is against a top 25 team. nuff said.

  329. Michigan Warrior October 15, 2010 5:16 pm

    Thanks, Kazz…

Kinda late here already. I’ll bust out some old albums and listen to some Kalapana tomorrow while bossing my kids around the house.

Yeah, I used to believe that everything they did was original too, and when hearing those same songs on the mainland, I used to think the haole artists stole the songs!

  331. Michigan Warrior October 15, 2010 5:20 pm

“Kiko” doesn’t sound macho enough for today’s marketing standards. Probably has to be something more unique, and yet fully relatable to our offense. I still like the “Rubbah Band Gun”! And still waiting for our elephant package!

  332. Michigan Warrior,

I’m pretty sure “Kona Daze” was an original yeah? 😉

  335. papajoe2 October 15, 2010 5:25 pm

If UH will be making $1.5 mil. from the student/athletic fees, maybe we could have a contest for students only, that attend the football games. 1 free tuition for a year based on local fees. We could even make it for 1 semester. For only home games, that wouldn’t cost the university much, considering the amount they bring in. I’m not talking books, dormitory, or meals, but just tuition. 8 home games? How much is resident tuition only? 8, 10 grand? What about for just a semester? Do you think the students will start to come to the football games since its just about 100% free? Also, I really like the idea of all UH’s schools having the option of purchasing the athletic fee. Book keeping for that may be a problem though. Maybe instead of $50 make it $75 for the community colleges, etc., to help with the book keeping.Talk about filling the Stadium? That may be the way to go. Also, give each student a UH T-shirt when they pay their athletic fee. They will use it just about anywhere, not just for the games, thus promoting the school and its sports.

  336. wafan October 15, 2010 5:26 pm

UH students complained bitterly about having to pay a $50/semester student athletic fee.

Last year Utah State students voted IN FAVOR of *increasing* their student athletic fee by $65/semester. They now pay a $120/semester student athletic fee because they voted *for* it.

You asked to not compare UH with Michigan or Alabama. Here is a comparison of students at UH with students at Utah State. Utah State students obviously like to go to their games and support their Athletic Department so much that they voted to pay more fees.

#344 gigi, I’m not sure if Utah has an athletic fee or how much they pay, but if I recall, the University of Hawaii was only one of a few schools in DI NOT to have an athletic fee. So its more likely that they do. Also, UH’s fee is one of the lowest too.

Good evening Tsakio Nation, all I can say during my era at UH the FANS came

out and FILLED Aloha Stadium and Blaisdel Arena as Parking lots were FILLED to

capacity at both arenas and the competition was FIERCE with Nebraska, North Carolina,

Grambling, BYU, Clemson, ASU, Indiana and many more Top Twenty teams after I left.

Tail gates were just AWESOME as you could eat with so many loyal fans inviting you

over and serving you plenty of food and beverages as they would brag to their friends

the next day that a Rainbow athlete was their guest at their home or taigate gathering.

No PPV but games were televise on KGMB if my memory is correct BUT that still brought the

older loyal fans, families as well as students to cheer us on !

Hawaii football, baseball and basketball was BIG time then as I remember scalpers in front of

Blaisdel being overwealm for their tickets as it was HARD to get a ticket for a UH

football or basketball game at that time as #281 Derek stated was just pure MAGICAL

as Hawaii was young and the SPORT FEVER around the Islands supported the BOWS as fans

watched everywhere from the Big Island to Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and Maui !

Today things has changed some what BUT one thing that is still there UH as it is the only

    game in town !

Thank you all for your LOYAL support as I keep supporting thousand miles away !

Simply The Best, Better Then All The Rest !

    IMUA WARRIORS !

  356. lopaka43 October 15, 2010 8:16 pm

Schools with lots of kids in dorms and frat houses in dinky college towns have a natural advantage over Honolulu. That works two ways.

The dorms and frat houses compete against each other and organize to get out to the games. During the week there are rallies to drive up interest, particularly when the game is against a traditional rival who has been a rival for decades.

And there isn’t much else happening in most of those towns on game day.

In contrast, most UH students go to school for class, hang out with friends and then disperse back home off campus. Few of them probably know anybody on the team or have been personally asked to come out to support the team. And there are lots of distractions and alternatives in Honolulu compared to Logan Utah or Moscow Idaho or Boise.

Another factor is the student experience when they get to Aloha Stadium. I remember when the band was right in the middle and.there was great student spirit. So many ways that the game day experience could be better, but nobody seems to be in charge of improving it. In comparison with the experience at other schools, UH and Aloha Stadium are way behind the curve.

  357. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 8:23 pm

    Garret and papajoe,

    mahalo!

Garret, I guess the 2nd row is for out of state students? $14,000+ per semester is pretty steep.

  358. d1島 October 15, 2010 8:34 pm

There are examples of “less than” programs that draw exceedingly well year in and year out regardless of the W/L record of the team. One that comes to mind right away is South Carolina; sold out for years before Spurrier got there and they were perrenial SEC doormats.

  359. d1島 October 15, 2010 8:39 pm

Huskie Stadium does indeed have bad seats and if you are from outta town tryna get a ticket you will be in one! My experience of a season opener against Michigan was buying tickets online in the summer before the season. The only seats available were in the first two rows of the grandstand.

They don’t tell you that the field is actually about level with the second row! Seating is behind the visitor’s bench and you will see nothing!

Try to stand to see the action and the season ticket holders in rows 3+ all shout for you to sit down!

We watched the entire game on the Jumbotron…

  360. d1島 October 15, 2010 8:44 pm

My cousin was a 25 year season ticket holder of UDub football but gave them up “when they went down” a few years ago. I think his last seats were still in double letters in the grandstand then; his father-in-law had his ticket for maybe 15 more years than he and was in something like row V.

  361. Boxco October 15, 2010 8:49 pm

Howzit Tsaikos, I’m a first time blogger, been following WB for a year or so, and really enjoy the informative, colorful, and entertaining Tsaiko nation!

I’m really perplexed as to the weak student support for Warrior sports. I was a student in the late 80’s, early 90’s. I remember organizing, standing in line, and “purchasing” (although at a major discount), our student-season tickets, so that ten to fifteen of us could sit together. And we weren’t the the only ones doing this. I remeber the Nanakuli gang behind us who use to chant, “Boom, Boom-Boom, Boom-Boom, MAHUKA!”

The seats weren’t great (north endzone), but the student section was packed. It wasn’t about the view, it was about supporting our school!

Free tickets, free transportation, and free “PIZZA”, we would have killed for that!

  362. d1島 October 15, 2010 8:50 pm

Had dinner with my nephew before we left Seattle a couple of nights ago. He is a freshman who just graduated from jmxxxx’s favorite ILH school.

One of the first things he did was try to get student tix for UDub football…not gonna happen! The school does set aside a small number of 4-game packages for incoming freshmen but those seats are not in the preferred student section (Dog Pound?).

He was told that in order to get MBB tickets you had to have been holding football student season tickets for (I think he said) the previous two seasons.

  363. d1島 October 15, 2010 8:55 pm

#2 son was asking friends at OSU about tix for The Civil War.

His friends said no dicey…you have to prove that you attended every home game the previous season in order to be eligible for tickets for that game!

  364. d1島 October 15, 2010 8:56 pm

    Welcome Boxco!

    Hope you post more often.

  365. d1島 October 15, 2010 9:00 pm

    Boxco,

It surely is a mystery about the student apathy. Going back to the conversation with my nephew at UDub, it seems like he is really going to be a life-long Husky fan.

Not sure how much of his class feels that way but the context is surely there for a student to get swept up into the fan hysteria that you would expect to see leading to alumni support for their program for years to come.

  366. d1島 October 15, 2010 9:04 pm

btw, if anyone is listening to the SLS-Puns game on AM1500 I’d appreciate updates.

Gosh, times have changed at UW. When I was a freshman getting student tickets was no problem–and this was right after they won a share of the national championship. As was shared earlier the sightlines are great at Husky Stadium EXCEPT in the bottom rows. There are 8 lanes of track and a whole team standing in front of you. Visiting section is in the endzone and that particular endzone not only has the 8 lanes of track but also has a high jump area. From the front row to the goal line must be 30-35 yards. Google map it and you will know what I am referring too.

The basketball team sucked back then and admission was free. You didn’t even need a ticket–just walk on in. I remember when UW was playing Fresno State and it was friends and family only at Hec-Ed.

And as a reference to the Agent article that is in SI. A number of players at UW were getting paid. Local boys benefited from the “white envelope” many many times. Steroid use was big too. One of the guys I lived with was a monster at UW and made all Pac-10 but at the combine he stunk it up because he had to clean out his system.

  389. d1島 October 15, 2010 9:27 pm

    Hbod,

    Mahalo!

They playing their Homecoming against the Boxers of Pacific U.

This is Pacific’s first year back in football since 1990. Playing lots of true freshman, takin’ cracks…starting QB T.C. Campbell from KS-Kapalama who is splitting time with PJ Minaya from Pac-5.

Leading receiver is Jordan Fukumoto from SLS. All 3 were playing in Aloha Stadium just last fall!

    #381-Gigi,

    you really don’t know Kalapana?

  395. d1島 October 15, 2010 9:33 pm

    gigi,

What does he say when he hears the name of the attorney who chased them thru the residential neighborhood and almost caused a fatal crash?

  396. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 9:35 pm

    Boxco,

Kalapana started in 1975. During the 70s and 80s, I listened only to classical music. Never listened to pop.

Nowadays, I rarely listen to classical.

  397. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 9:36 pm

    d1,

we don’t even know the atty’s name! All we remember is HANOHANO. LOL.

  399. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 9:39 pm

  400. d1島 October 15, 2010 9:39 pm

If he had chased them into your living room, you’d remember his name!

  401. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2010 9:40 pm

well, anyway, we’re glad Hanohano was given a chance by Mack and is doing well on the team. Way to go!

  402. Boxco October 15, 2010 9:43 pm

My cousin and I like to categorize Kalapana as Classic Contemporary Hawaiian. They had some brass in their band, sounded like a smaller local version of Chicago. Of all the local bands from that era, I really thought they could go mainstream.

  403. Not an Expert October 15, 2010 9:44 pm

The trends come and go. Attendance goes up and down. You have winning records and losing records. The Economy cycles. Stock Market is like attendance and you win some and lose some. Hawaii athletics are at a crossroads and hopefully it goes up from here.

In the interim being attendance hovers in the area of 30,000 to 35,000, UH needs to work a new season ticket angle. First close all the upper deck seating areas. (end zone & sideline) Have all season ticket holders purchase ticket in the lower areas only. Adjust the season ticket prices whereby the lower cost season holders pay a little more and the higher season ticket holders pay a little less, but revenues stay about the same. Those people in the upper seating areas (heaven) can get closer to the field for a reasonable increase.

The affect is that the crowds will be more packed together and energy levels will increase and the crowd will look better on TV. Will look more filled than sparse. Overhead cost will be lowered cause of the upper deck being closed. What happens when there is a big game. People can buy the individual tickets for reserve seating in all levels except the upper deck. Make the upper deck general admission on a first come first serve. Ticket prices should be valued such so people will want to get in early thus helping the concessions to make more money. Start with the sideline upper decks first. If that gets filled than open the end zone upper decks.

To summarize it will cut overhead cost and it will pack the lower levels and increase the energy level cause the people will be closer to the field. When UH starts winning year in and year out and becomes a top level program than a new set of problems will appear, which will be a good problem then.

    More food for thought:

Has a study ever been made to see how a person becomes a fan for UH sports. What were the reasons and situations that made them life long fans. If the marketing at UH new the answers to these questions they would have better ideas and ways to help promote new and ongoing fans for the school. It will not happen overnight but will grow as each year goes by and by the way it must be an ongoing process.

Why I became a fan was because as a 5 year old my father took me to the UH football games. I became a fan before I even attended UH. I was influenced at a young age.

What was your reason or situation?

  416. Boxco October 15, 2010 10:02 pm

Was a UH student 1969-75. Went to all the home games partly for football, partly for the girls. Could check out all the dorm girls from the Outer Islands, country areas of Oahu and the few Mainland girls there were. Seems like all the Dormers went. The Frats and the Sororities all went. The games had a definite college feel. The student’s energy drove the crowd. Back then there was a definite connection between the students and the team.

Been a season ticket holder since joining the WAC. So I fall into the category of Alum. Or more correctly an Alum who attended games as a student that is a season ticket holder. The majority of my friends and acquaintances from back then fall into this category.

Can’t give you what the current students perspective is about attending games. But I can surmise the category of season ticket holder I fall into, an alum who attended games as a student, has been falling for the last twenty years or so.

Can’t say why or when this happened but there is a definite disconnect between the students and THEIR team.

    hmmmmm.

The Kalapana that I remember had no regular brass. Acoustic guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and dj pratt’s flying fingers on the electric guitar. An occasional flute and a rare sax was it.

The sound was not even close to that of Chicago.

There were many a big band that had a lot of brass but they played the disco/dance circuits.

  473. CoolEthan October 16, 2010 3:22 am

via Woody Paige on this sundays game against the jets…Hawaii fans need to read this.

On this Sunday, all you people who claim to be faithful loyalists of the Broncos come early, stay late, dress in orange (not blue) sweat shirts, jerseys, caps and jackets, wave the orange towels that will be distributed and get involved in the game.

(I’ve been told by real fans they’ve been ordered to sit down on critical plays.)

Stand on every third and fourth down, and every play in the red, er, orange zone, for the Broncos and the Jets. Be quiet before the play when the Broncos’ offense is in that situation, and cheer your tongues out after every play. Scream — especially those of you in the north and south stands — and stomp your feet on every Jets play in those circumstances, and make it difficult for them to hear the quarterback.

Then, it’s up to the Broncos, dressed in the old, lovable orange jerseys. Hey, Josh, I’m talking to you. Wear an orange shirt (without a hood). Be the first man onto the field as the team runs out. Fire up the players. Release that pent-up emotion as you did in the Patriots game last season. Give the Jets something to think about, give the fans something to cheer about and give ’em, as Bonnie Raitt sang, something to talk about — Tim Tebow occasionally in the backfield with Orton, razzle-dazzle reverse flea-flicker plays, a fake punt and an onsides kick, safety blitzes, six-man defensive fronts, five wide-receiver sets and the creativity you promised.

Players, especially you backups and rookies and running backs — I’m talking to you, J.D. Walton, Perrish Cox, Jarvis Moss and Lawrence Maroney — Orange up and play your hearts out. Orton, Eddie Royal, Brandon Lloyd, D.J. Williams and Champ Bailey, leader up and make the plays.

Be loud, be proud, be nitro, be retro.

    Be the Orange Crush

#403… Not an Expert… need to post these ideas on any main articles concerning UH attendance on the Star-Advertiser’s front page. Get it out there and have people discuss it!

#415… I’ve stated this several times throughout… I started attending UH games with all the older guys in my family… grandfather, dad, uncles, and cousins… from Termite Palace and Blaisdell dayz. Those that are still alive… are still UH fans to this day.

  481. Michigan Warrior October 16, 2010 3:59 am

#437… cocobean… how many Fraternities and Sororities are there at UH now? Does anyone know? Can the university reconnect with them through athletics?

    Happy birthday, Ronnie!!!

    Game day, baby!!!

    Go, Warriors!

#445… jm2375… Must’ve been so cool to see them all doing the haka! I wonder if anyone taped it and posted it? Wonder if Na Wahnie will do their version too? At least for home games!

#456… BigHiloFan2… holy smokes! That’s a good looking group of Seniors! Hope we get a chance to play some underclassmen in some games this season!

  484. Michigan Warrior October 16, 2010 4:11 am

#459… UHFan808… Yup! We just gotta keep the votes coming! Several other QB’s ahead of Moniz aren’t getting the votes to sustain them, so we may be able to bump Moniz up a few more spots. We just gotta keep it all going. Last year, the voting got heavier in the final few days before the cutoff. This year’s cutoff is at noon, October24.

  485. Michigan Warrior October 16, 2010 4:15 am

    Morning, d1!!!

Let’s all remember to keep referring to that team as “Reno”.

Let the receivers run off the DB’s; if nobody start yelling they not going turn around! 😆

  492. CoolEthan October 16, 2010 5:54 am

Kirk Herbstreit is a Hawaii fan today.

Predicted the Upset this morning on nation tv.

  493. mctruck October 16, 2010 5:56 am

The ESPN crew discussing their picks just a few moments ago; they collectively feel that although both teams have prolific offenses….Neveda will come up on top because of the, “D.” factor.

Let’s go Warrior-D!!, show these guys they don’t know what they are talkin bout. Catch the island fevah and smash dat wolf pack offensive package.

I say again….only one guy can pass, but “two” guys can run and do more damage; do the math.

  494. CoolEthan October 16, 2010 6:15 am

3 out of the 4 guys on that crew failed to realize that Hawaii is actually better than Nevada on BOTH sides of the ball.

Fans need to help the Warriors win this game tonight and shut down the packs QB signal calling.

  495. wafan October 16, 2010 6:15 am

  530. Matt October 16, 2010 8:22 am

They should encourage people to vote for Moniz on the Aloha Vision at the stadium. So many people these days have smart phones. Even if one percent of the people in attendance vote for Moniz, he would catch up with Kaepernick.

  531. Shoko October 16, 2010 8:24 am

    MW #475,

Oh, just read your post. Perhaps not really much of a hurdle to catchup with Kap.

BC-FSU game turning out to be a good game.

  532. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 16, 2010 8:32 am

Another long day – twol fillums – one before and one after the game.

Bringing a quarter sheet Lbra B’day cake and will drop it off along with the recycling stuff before we head on over to the Regal theatres.

Having gone to two PAC10 schools – UW and UCLA plus attending a lot of USC games as well – the student sections are filled because of tradition AND willing teams.

Go Warriors – and when is the Wahine volleyball eam going to play some opponents that match their talents BEFORE the regionals? Answer – never.

  533. Michigan Warrior October 16, 2010 8:34 am

Matt… good idea! Also might want to get word to Robert Kekaula so he can announce it too!

Fans should bring a simple sign into Aloha stadium with…

    “Vote 4 Moniz”

  534. Michigan Warrior October 16, 2010 8:37 am

Yeah, Shoko… as long as we can at least maintain this pace, Moniz should get in. I just want to make sure we have him high enough before the final week… that’s when other team’s fans start noticing and start making greater efforts in getting the vote out.

Would be good to get the word out at the Stadium, and over the radio.

  535. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 16, 2010 8:37 am

Whoops!! really bad eyes this morning: twol = two fillums

  545. A-House October 16, 2010 9:30 am

continued – it’s no wonder why so many “stand” the entire game – very difficult to sit on!

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Remodeling a closed kitchen area to make it more open is not always simple – but it’s feasible. should begin by measuring the room and marking on graph paper the position of all with the walls. It’s easiest to use a scale that is a quarter of an inch per 1 foot. You’ve to also need to mark the windows, doorways, switch plates, cabinets, outlets, fixtures, and conveniences.

For going custom, the best way to go is this. This webpage is amazing. They provide a range of styles, colours and fabrics. You can simply mix and match to create your perfect look and to best it off the prices aren’t via the roof either. The extended sleeved look I priced came in around $134 which isn’t bad for formal wear to not refer to custom formal wear.

    – Solid construction, easy to operate- Work well with with all mobile frequency in Thailand (AIS, DTAC, 3G-2100) haven’t tried with 3G-EVDO or CDMA but should work fine- Applicable for any place you need quiet time (meeting room, classroom, even skytrain)

    Unbelieveable !!!!

    Unbelieveable !!!!

Very well built. Output is exactly what is described- a nice even swath of noise over the CDMA, 3G and GSM bands. It is putting out a few milliwatts and cell towers put out hundreds of watts- so it works only over 10-50 feet on CDMA and less on 3G. AT&T phones seem to be immune

    Unbelieveable !!!!

  • Britax Car Seat November 14, 2010 12:08 pm

Usually fixing a car seat is not recommended. I would get it checked by your local fire department first and then look into a local store for the pieces that you will be suggested repairing. In 9 out of 10 your fire department will recommend buying a new car seat. You can get discounted Roundabouts at starting at $199.99 with free shipping.

Great information! Keep in mind, too, that “added vitamins and minerals” on a pet food means chemically-synthesized ones. These can have negative consequences, like those seen recently with the Blue Buffalo recall due to too much added vitamin D. Nature’s Logic foods get all nutrients from 100% natural ingredients, like whole foods.
