Friday notes

WEST POINT — The Warriors completed a fun-filled walk-through at Army’s Michie Stadium.

Several players swapped jerseys to throw off potential Army, uh, observers.

Near the end of practice, three guys parachuted onto the field.

As they hovered, UH punter Alex Dunnachie said: “Now that’s hangtime.”

After years of haggling, the Warriors received a huge victory: Per diem.

UH still provides two meals and a snack each day. But the players now have money for their third meal — an undisclosed amount based on a combined NCAA/Hawaii state formula.

Happy Birthday Big Hilo Fan 2 !

Never has their been a UNIQUE Warrior Football Fan who BRINGS

PIDGEN TALK in a way that it is just CLASSIC especially when rooting

for the Hawaii Warriors Football Team !

A PLEASURE to have met you in Las Vegas as the picture of you

remain in my memory at UNLV Football Stadium with the foam Hawaii

helmet on and Hawaii Super Cape darpe over your shoulders as you

rose from your seat yelling Proudly when Hawaii made a BIG play and

ALL of red/silver clad rebel fans who saw you and BELIEVE me they saw

as they stood in TOTAL SHOCK as you really came off as a NEW SUPER

HERO of DC Marvel Comics !

SO FUNNY as humor is part of our life but with you it is taken to a whole

different level as you bring JOY to the heart and spirit just by laughing with

you and enjoying your INTELLIGENCE !

Have a WONDERFUL celebration and MAHALO for just being you as it takes

all kinds of people to make this world and you being the “BIG KAHUNA” from

the big island hilo only goes to show that GOODNESS is where the HEART is

as you kind sir have PLENTY OF IT !

Looking forward to another EXPERIENCE of the big hilo fan 2 as

it is truly enlightening when you enter Hawaii opponent’s arena

as their is NO one can come CLOSE to challenging your PRIDE

    for Hawaii athletics !

    A Hui Ho !

  33. chickenkatsucurry September 10, 2010 12:11 pm

Athletes usually get $36, but since some meals are provided it is adjusted. I think the breakdown is $6 breakfast, $10 lunch, $20 dinner for whichever meal they are not getting.

  34. Slugger September 10, 2010 12:14 pm

    Happy birthday, Kay!

Love the picture of the Carnegie Deli pastrami sammie. Will the per diem cover the cost of that sang-guich?

Good looking quarterback. Can run, too.

  35. Michigan Warrior September 10, 2010 12:29 pm

    Happy birthday, Kay!!!

    I agree with Slugger…

Man, that’s a great looking sandwich!

    And that QB is buffed!!!

  36. gigi-hawaii September 10, 2010 12:29 pm

When I lived in New York, I loved to eat hot pastrami on Rye bread. Ono! Hard to find that these days in Hawaii.

  37. Hawaiianbod September 10, 2010 12:30 pm

    Happy Birthday BHF2!

    OKOLE MALUNA!

  38. Hawaiianbod September 10, 2010 12:32 pm

St – did that pastrami sandwhich taste as good as it looks?

    NUM NUM!!

  39. Michigan Warrior September 10, 2010 12:32 pm

In this time of war… as suggested a few days ago… are we doing anything publicly to honor Army?

Maybe have the announcer dedicate the after-game Ha’a to all service members at home and overseas… That should get extra air time just due to the dedication, I’d think.

  40. Hawaiianbod September 10, 2010 12:34 pm

you keep being a bad boy and mama has to give you ‘spanings’. lol.

  51. al September 10, 2010 1:20 pm

found one site that says that per diem is

    breakfast = $8

    lunch = $12

    dinner = $15

  52. Kyle September 10, 2010 1:23 pm

Pastrami sandwich from Carnegie Deli is an absolute “Must Do” whenever we go to NYC. Our daughter order bacon and eggs for breakfast once — looked like they served her an entire package of bacon.

  53. Buffoman September 10, 2010 1:31 pm

When in NY and eating at a deli, you need to have a liverworst (sp?) on rye, with a hunk of cheese. You may find pastrami in Hawaii which may not be as good as what you’d find up there, but you will not find good liverworst (sp?) in Hawaii period.

We are talking about a colesterol bomb, but damn it tastes great. On a be sure to get a side of the slaw.

  54. longdistance808 September 10, 2010 1:34 pm

Out from lurking. 94520 area here.

    Go Warriors!!!

    Back to lurking.

  55. al September 10, 2010 1:36 pm

buffoman…okay, its liverwurst. but no biggie. however, you are right no really great liverwurst in hawaii to be found.

last good one i had was in downtown chicago. it was pile a mile high with several cheeses of your choice. mustard and mayo. ouch!

  56. NCAA September 10, 2010 1:38 pm

    Mr. RainbowCliff,

Just in case someone gets offended, it is “a hui hou”.

  57. Ralph September 10, 2010 1:39 pm

#5 Texas swept by Stanford today in the Gator classic. Texas is now 5-2, UH should be moving back up after this weekends play

  58. Ralph September 10, 2010 1:41 pm

It is actually the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic in Gainesville, Florida, home of the Gators

  59. al September 10, 2010 1:42 pm

concord… isn’t that over the hills of berkely, orinda, and the creek?

  60. Ralph September 10, 2010 1:43 pm

#1 Penn State will play #4 Florida in the other match, the winner plays Stanford. UH should be moving up with these teams beating up on each other.

  61. NCAA September 10, 2010 1:44 pm

Nothing like eating pork’s liver with red onion and mustard in rye.

  62. ewa girl September 10, 2010 1:45 pm

I look at the newspapers tv and radio and it looks like the hawaii vs army game will be replayed on sunday at 11:00 am on OC16

  63. NCAA September 10, 2010 1:47 pm

    Mr. Ralph,

Should the Wahine VB win all 3 games this weekend I think they would at most move up 1 spot or stay where they are now.

  64. NCAA September 10, 2010 1:51 pm

Pardon me. Not this weekend. I meant to say should they win all 3 games this tournament.

  65. Chow Mein September 10, 2010 1:57 pm

Try the pastrami sandwich at Katz Deli in New York City. Numero uno! World famous deli of the stars (Billy Crystal, Bill Clinton, Kate Hudson, Derek Jeter, etc.). On your back to Newark, stop by at Tops Diner! This place is the bomb! Featured on the food channel show Diners Drives and Dives! Don’t worry it’s in the safe part of Newark amd only 5 minutes from the airport.

  66. SteveM September 10, 2010 1:58 pm

longdistance808 — hi! Long time… Last we heard you were in Seattle. So, Concord, CA now. I haven’t been to Concord since the mid-80’s. Was a nice area and a terminus for the BART.

  67. longdistance808 September 10, 2010 2:07 pm

Yep. I work in North Concord.

The last place in Hawaii that even came close to that sammich was the New York Deli in Kaimuki and that buggah was ‘spensive! Maybe that’s why they had to close down. 🙁

Stephanie Ferrell isn’t starting for the Gators. She has not started in all 6 matches, she did play in 9 of 19 sets in the previous 5 games and leads the team in hitting at .41.

Today she has played in 1 of 3 games, the third game in progress, she is 1-0-3.

  88. Slugger September 10, 2010 3:02 pm

    Steve,

#45 ~ Oceanic Time Warner info from a tech this morning:

Army, 9/11, channel 247 and PPV 255; no replay since the feed is from another station

Colorado, 9/18, channel 246 and PPV 255; no replay

All other games will be on the PPV channel 255 (I don’t have the HD package) and there will be replays, about 4.5 hours after the game ends.

  89. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 3:04 pm

Several months ago myself and other WB bloggers were posting several names from the past from UH football. I wanted to know the name of the player that transferred to Hawaii from Oklahoma after being the 3rd string running back, behind Pruitt. His name is Regis Grice. I think he played during the Jeff Sydner era. The name just popped into me. At last! Now I can finally get some sleep.

  90. Buffoman September 10, 2010 3:06 pm

    Al,

Just threw out that liverwurst thing as I was feeling like I was one of a dying few who yearned for such a deli food. Glad to see both you and NCAA enjoy innards on rye with cheese and onions (yes, forgot to mention). Yummm! That thick slab of wurst, no kiddie portion…damn I can feel the arteries hardening as I type! Good stuff.

  91. Warrior Fan in NY September 10, 2010 3:13 pm

    GOOD LUCK WARRIORS!!!!!!!!

    woot woot!!!!!!

I was planning on going to the game but I have classes until 12 🙁

Make sure you try a NY style pizza 🙂 Definitely going to miss that when I move to Hawaii.

  92. Ralph September 10, 2010 3:16 pm

OC 16 list a college fb game on sunday at 11 am, but doesn’t list the teams. I would think the only college game oc 16 would do would be the UH game.

  93. al September 10, 2010 3:24 pm

buffoman…on occasion, costco will have liverwurst and whole foods does sell it. safeway from time to time has a decent one too.

hmmmm. i need to pick up some breakfast stuff for tomw.

  94. Ralph September 10, 2010 3:25 pm

Penn State in 4, will play Stanford for the Nike Big Four Championship. Ferrell finishes 3-0-5 to along with 2 aces.

  95. chawan_cut September 10, 2010 3:26 pm

ferrell was overrated and a star in her own mind. we’re better off.

  96. al September 10, 2010 3:30 pm

papajoe2…not to burst your bubble but.

the oklahoma transfer was larry sherrer.

regis grice was another transfer tb but he came by way of pasadena. yup, from usc of all places.

  97. Dennis Halloran September 10, 2010 3:34 pm

Watching Marshall-WVU stunner and printed out my schedule for manana and there are 19 games on in So Cal TV

I should have bought a 30 pak instead of 18

Biggest surprise will be USC, who will beat the spread

and BYU will lose to AFA

  98. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 3:36 pm

al, then I must be thinking of someone else. I remember Larry Sherrer. He was a very good running back. Over 1,000 yards. Played in the Hula Bowl and got only 1 carry, 0 yards (?). Didn’t we get someone from Oklahoma, during the Greg Pruitt era?

  99. Da Punchbowl Kid September 10, 2010 3:36 pm

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    BEAT ARMY!!!

  100. Da Punchbowl Kid September 10, 2010 3:37 pm

Happy Birhtdat again to the Big Fellah from the Big Island!

  101. Slugger September 10, 2010 3:43 pm

    al &buffoman,

I miss chopped chicken liver on rye….I don’t think the deli I went to in SF is still there.

Breakfast tomorrow…yup, gotta plan for it. I only have Ka Lei eggs…& Kona kope.

  102. tom mui September 10, 2010 3:44 pm

GIGI: When I was in NYC, not only was it pastrami – but grilled hotdogs.

Unfortunately most places here only boil or steam them. However the ones at Haut Dogs are great. Too bad you can’t find Chicago hotdogs anywhere in the markets – only Haut Dogs seem to have them.

  103. al September 10, 2010 3:44 pm

    regis grice = ’73,’74

    sydner = ’88-’91

  104. tom mui September 10, 2010 3:46 pm

AL – went back to Teddy’s and tried the Greek hamburger – don’t!!!

Lois liked her regular – and the one I had with you was really great!

  105. al September 10, 2010 3:48 pm

pj2…you must be thinking larry sherrer. that would be the same time that pruitt made all american in ’71 and ’72.

  106. tom mui September 10, 2010 3:48 pm

SLUGGER: Is that the deli that is about a block from the St. Francis Hotel?

I liked the meat blintzes there – not kosher (mixing meat and dairy) but good eating!

  107. al September 10, 2010 3:49 pm

tom…my true favorite is with bacon, mushrooms, and cheeses. i like a bleu or gorgonzola cheese in my burgers.

  108. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 3:51 pm

al, as I get older, the dates get foggier. I do know that Hawaii plays tomorrow though. That’s all I need to know that is important right now, but now I cannot sleep again because I get the wrong person in mind.

  109. al September 10, 2010 3:55 pm

i was thinking that one day we theme our tailgater as an all american classic.

folks bring their own special recipe burgers to grill. minimum quarter pounders.

any kine buns; onion, kaiser, croissant, plain, sweet bread, etc.

any kine cheeses…..garnishes and the like.

    potato or mac salad

    chips.

if somebody got wok we can make home fries (fresh potatoes only). i get one mean dipped potato wedge recipe.

and no forget the dogs n sausages. some chili on the side, kraut, and did i say sausages? brats, whoa the list could go on.

  110. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 3:56 pm

    wow al, das all?

pj2…you not old. i think that only had sherrer in the day from oklahoma.

  112. Slugger September 10, 2010 3:57 pm

    tommui,

dont remember, it was so long ago when I worked there.

  113. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 3:59 pm

al, who was the running back that played (backed up) with Gary Allen, then after Allen used up his eligibility, was the primary back for Hawaii? Can you also give the year if you know? I’m just reminiscing. Those days were good but, no blog, so we couldn’t write about them.

  114. Buffoman September 10, 2010 4:03 pm

Al, thanks, I though it was only farmer john in the local supermarket deli. Would have guessed that whole foods and safeway would have that product. It almost brings me to tears knowing that there are other liver lovers out there. Heck, I’m even seeing fewer local restaurants serving liver and bacon!!

Absolutely love my mom for insisting on liver at least once a month to get our supply of iron. back then they fried the bacon first and did not bother to change the oil. We may have been getting our iron but wow, all that bacon fat!! No wonder it all tasted so good! Onions sauteed in bacon fat!

  115. madeinhawaii September 10, 2010 4:09 pm

    papajoe2,

Gary Allen played between 1978-81. JD was a Junior when Allen was a senior.

Check Garret’s blog on Garry Allen … Centurians #5

    http://warriorquotes.wordpress.com/2009/08/02/gary-allen-is-centurians-5/

  116. WarriorMojo September 10, 2010 4:13 pm

papajoe is thnking of #3 Anthony Edgar, a transfer from UCLA.

Might papajoe also have been thinking of Joe McReynolds, a QB transfer from (I think) OK State?

  117. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 4:13 pm

The reason I’m stuck on the running back that played for UH that I thought transferred from Oklahoma, is because back in those days, I don’t think the NCAA had limits on scholarships. I remember Oklahoma had well over 100 (I’m thinking 135) scholarships for football alone. They would give scholarships to players that wouldn’t get much playing time, if at all, just so they couldn’t play against them. So I thought Hawaii had a 3rd or 4th string rb that did good for us. I remember reading about schools like Okla. that would actually pay players to watch the grass grow at their stadium. When it reached a certain height, they would tell someone in charge, who would then give the order to cut the grass. Imagine with that many scholarships in today’s football, how many women’s sports they would need just to be equal to their football team, not to mention basketball, etc. Those days were very influential in today’s rules for scholarships.

  118. madeinhawaii September 10, 2010 4:17 pm

Looks like Marshall shifted from “playing to win” to “playing not to lose.” WVU knocking with a 1/2 minute left to play. Marshall with an 8pt lead

  119. madeinhawaii September 10, 2010 4:19 pm

TD WVU!!! 19-21… WVU needs to go for two.

  120. madeinhawaii September 10, 2010 4:20 pm

    12 seconds on the clock…

  121. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 4:22 pm

#117 WM, I think you are right on the money with Anthony Edgar. He wasn’t a big guy, but could motor. That’s the best name that I was thinking of. Didn’t he come from Okla. though? I most surely had the wrong school in mind. al, he was a popolo (sorry, if I offended anybody, I just don’t know what is politically correct nowadays so I used the Hawaiian term).

  122. al September 10, 2010 4:22 pm

norris birdsong was before gary allen.

if you are thinking after gary allen then you should ask pride.

i remember anthony edgar and bernard quarles, too.

  129. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 4:34 pm

mih, Mahalo for Garret’s post on Gary Allen. He was one of my all time rbs at UH. I remember his freshman year, he was listed at 175#s. I really liked that he always ran forward and made players miss. Now days you get too much shaking and baking and either losing big yards or not gaining many yards. You can shake and bake but the pursuit will catch up with you. Hard to make 11 guys miss. Once in a while you’ll see a great run but more times then not the rb will not amount to much. Gary Allen always made me think if you fall forward, you will gain at least 2 yards. I also really liked Jeff Sydner too.

  130. d1島 September 10, 2010 4:36 pm

    ..thought it was in.

    crusher for Marshall.

  131. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 4:39 pm

Thanks you guys for the older names from UH. Bulla says make memories 3x. Those were my memories of forgone UH. A little cloudy but it brings a smile to my face. Hopefully, tomorrow’s game and this season, will continue to make memories, not only for us older fans, but for the some guy asking similar questions some 30/40 years from now.

  132. Committed Road Warrior September 10, 2010 4:41 pm

The A-House clan must be having a good time in NYC. Haven’t heard a peep from them on the blog since they left for the East Coast.

CRW, I hope the A-house clan not lost in Seattle.

  134. USMA BOW FAN September 10, 2010 4:48 pm

I think my favorite running back was Wilbert Haslip. He was our own Earl Campbell. His career-ending injury was one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen in sports.

I’m new to all of this PPV stuff, so I only know so much, like what I know about football…throw the ball, catch the ball, run…shovel the ball, run the ball, make a TD…kick the ball…interception! run the ball, make a TD…block here…block dere…

K, off to the Wahine VB game…Latahs…

  138. Pomai September 10, 2010 5:00 pm

Marshall’s lost was all on the coach’s, hope Mack watched the game a little bit. As MIH said they started the fourth playing not to lose. Thier D was great all night then the coach’s changed it to a three man rush.

Another reason to never bet on FB games

Army has over 60 players that played at their Prep School, which is the equivalent of red shirting an entire class. Twice!

They have a Mater Dei HS player, ours is still out!

    Talking about Backs…

After getting out of the Army and finishing my time with the Hawaii Army National Guard, I worked at Eagle Hardware & Garden out at Waikele. While in the position as a Buyer for the Building Materials department, Travis Sims came in to visit with another of the Buyers. When I heard that he was upstairs in the offices, I ran all the way from clear across the opposite side of the building just to get to meet him and hake his hand. Several of us kept showering him with questions of his UH days, even as he was trying to leave to make it to another appointment. Can’t remember what company he represented, (wasn’t anything related to my department), but it was a fun day!

    speaking of great sandwiches….

English chef creates a $150 cheese sandwich

The delicacy was created by celebrity chef Martin Blunos, who hand-crafted the luxury snack using cheddar blended with expensive white truffles.

It is dressed with 100-year-old balsamic vinegar and the sourdough bread – which costs £5 alone – is sprinkled with powdered E175. That’s gold dust to you and me.

    and it’s not even toasted!

Gary Allen was my friend at UH as today when I see him we EMBRACE !

I was with him from 1976 to 81 as full back Keith Hill, George Bell and David

Toloumu were FIERCE running backs during that Time as Anthony Edgar was

red shirting during Gary Allen senior year as he transfered from UCLA !

San Fernanodo stand out James Bathea was recovering from knee surgery as

he and Anthony Edgar the following year put up some HUGHE stats as both were

bless with BIG thighs and can run between the tackles as well as student body right from the I formation !

Wilbert Haslip and Norris Birdsong were just AWESOME as those two would alternate

or play in the backfield together as Dr. Larry Price was leading the “BIG GREEN MACHINE” in 1976 as AD Ray Nagel and newly hired head coach Dick Tomey will take Hawaii in 1977 and start the recruiting class of some GREAT players to play for UH during that time as Blaine Gaison, Verlon Redd, Dewayne Jett, Mike Stennis, Dana McClemore, Karl Kennybrew, Pat Schmidit, Jessie Sapolu, Semeri Ulufale, Jason Elam, Tom / Mark Tuinei and AD Jim Donovan will lead the Rainbow Warriors into a prolific run formation team and BIG TIME hitting defenders as Blaine Gaison was a FIERCE hitting safety as he transferd to that position coming as a quaterback from Kamehameha High School !

Came in with those guys of that era as Nebraska, Grambling, BYU Jim McMahon and Marc Wilson will quaterback some GREAT games vs. the Bows as well as highly ranked Arizona State, Texas A& I, Tennessee, Oregon State and Southern California will “sell out” Aloha Stadium in anticipation of some historical and memorable games that your older family members can tell you about as it was sure EXCITEMENT during that golden era of Independent conference football as well as the begining of the WAC !

A HUI HOU as I stand corrected !

  174. lil.s September 10, 2010 8:47 pm

gotta grab extra++ rye bread and pickles with that pastrami sandwich and you’ll be good to go! oh and dont forget some cheesecake FTW!!

RainbowCliff, whhoooooooo. The names. Takes me back. Welcome back from your mini vacation.

  176. Hawaiianbod September 10, 2010 9:04 pm

can’t forget one of the key offensive linemen on that team, one of my all-time favorite player, local boy Keith Ah Yuen.

  177. jm2375 September 10, 2010 9:12 pm

    hbod – #177 – 😀 😆 Your pride. is showing!

  178. postmanke September 10, 2010 9:18 pm

Wow yes some names from the pass! K Jim Asmus recruited in the late 70’s by Tomey. Elam was much later?

  179. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 9:20 pm

#176 papajoe2: THANK YOU sir for allowing me to share my time and memory of a GREAT era that I and the names above were PRIVELAGED to dawn the colors of green and white with the white helmet “rainbow warrior” running the ball with fire blazing at his feet as the rainbow spectrum dawn the length to the football pants !

GIVE EM Bows you will hear cheering from the many loyal local fans as the Cazimero Brothers were at the highlight of their career, C&K music everybody had their album and Don Ho was Mr. Tiny bubbles as the Charter House and Victoria Station was the meal table for athletes to eat as prime rib and steaks were delicious at the Charter House with the salad bar and BIG prawns salivating at Victoria Station. We ATE good at our pre game meals !

Nicks Fishmarket took care of ALL athletes especially Derek Tatsuno and Dick Tomey !

  180. Hank September 10, 2010 9:21 pm

he’s the Tsultry One in a Million Tsinger.

  182. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 9:30 pm

#179 postmanke: I stand corrected as Jim Asmus was the kicker then as Elam came much later !

Raphael Cherry was a converted cornerback to quaterback as he was just AWESOME with

his speed and athleticism as he could throw any ball and LEAD in the huddle to commend that respect from his caches and teammates !

Cherry and Michael Carter were some TOUGH running quaterbacks during Hawaii early glory days !

  183. lil.s September 10, 2010 9:36 pm

agreed. Carter was one of the best triple-option quarterbacks I’ve seen but lets not forget about Ivan Jasper too! They are probably the best tandem quarterbacks in terms of that offensive ever. I doubt we would have been that successful without one or the other.

  184. postmanke September 10, 2010 9:39 pm

Joe Nobles was tough little receiver. He was fun to watch. Aui Fitisemanu was one of my favorites. Fierce pass rusher.. His UH career was brief, A fight in the locker room with Niko Noga got him kicked off the team. He had so much potential. One of the best talents on the 81 and 82 squads. But yes, Gary Allen was the awesome!

  185. OldDiver September 10, 2010 9:40 pm

    Wow Cliff,

Great memories, two of my favorite RB’s have to be David Toloumu and Gary Allen. Still remember that game against Temple where Gary Allen ran wild but we lost 31-30. The next day Coach Tomey on the coaches show still reeling from the loss eyes full of tears said it was the toughest loss he ever had. I will never forget the expression of love he had for his players. The good old days…Thanks for the memories………

  186. postmanke September 10, 2010 9:46 pm

QB Tim Lyons was money! he too was converted player I believe… wasn’t he tight end or receiver before the 82 season? He did a great job as well did Bernard Quarles 81 -82 years

  187. RedZone September 10, 2010 9:47 pm

When Tomey came from UCLA he brought over their starting free safety Pat Schmidt. UCLA replaced Schmidt with a freshman named Ken Easley. We also got transfers like Jeff Duva from BYU. We had a couple of good DTs, Gary Spots and Tom Tuinei with a really good linebacking corp with Mike Arvanetis, Junior Taleasea and Jack Voeller. One of my favorite Tomey era corners was Lyndell Jones.

  188. RedZone September 10, 2010 9:48 pm

Oh yeah Wilbert is my favorite fullback of all time.

  189. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 9:52 pm

lil.s #184: Ivan Jasper was WAYYYYY after my time as I do believe from 1991 to 93 as I do recall his name. In 1986 I coached a stand out poly high school basketball player Chris Roscoe who could JUMP out of the gym during summer league play at Slam N Jam !

Little did I know that Chris will leave basketball and become a stand out receiver for the

bows from 1987-89 as I watched one game being shown here in Los Angeles and Roscoe was putting on a show with leaping catches, evading tacklers and running after the catch just AMAZING as I could not believe that his athletic talent in football would be his calling as he was a TREMENDOUS basketball player !

Warren Jones and Garret Gabriel were the signal callers then !

  190. al September 10, 2010 10:00 pm

  192. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 10:06 pm

#189 Red Zone: Wilbet Haslip was a “STUD” with TREMENDOUS thighs and a HEART of a LION !

The guy was a FORCE to bring down as he was the Earl Campbell during his time !

Wilbert was a GREAT guy as he was quiet and giving as MANY times he would invite

me to his eating table as I was just a freshmen as he introduce me to the many athletes and students who LOVED being around the BIG back who could EAT and laugh at the same time !

Wilbert and Dan Audick would take me under their wings and mentor me on the importance of being a solid Rainbow Warrior and GOOD person as both were well RESPECTED on upper and lower campus !

  193. al September 10, 2010 10:12 pm

gotta include travis sims and nuu faaola when mentioning all time bruiser backs.

  194. papajoe2 September 10, 2010 10:16 pm

You see? You see what you guys did? All this time I was trying to remember the name of a running back that I thought transferred from Oklahoma. Now I get all you folks taking about yesteryear. Too bad the younger guys like Kazz wasn’t around. He would go absolutely nuts during that time. You guys getting me psyched for tomorrow’s game. Its starting in less than 8 hours. I better get some sleep. Gotta get up early to cook fried rice and portuguese sausage for my brudda’s early morning tailgate at his house. I might have some green eye openers, ………..but maybe not.

    But, not by much.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  201. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 10:27 pm

#191 Al: Keith Ah Yuen I do believe came from Punahou H.S. as he was just a BIG FORCE of solid steel as he would open holes for Gary Allen, George Bell and David Toloumu with center Eugene Price and Larry Goeas leading a STELLAR offensive line as the running game during that TIME was just AWESOME to see it LIVE in Aloha Stadium !

The Rainbow Warrior Club was an award establish in 1997 to recognize ALL players who gave winning performances for the majority of the season as Ah Yuen, Goeas and Price were recognize as “BIG TIME TEAM PLAYERS” as they would receive this honor many times through out their stellar careers !

Hawaii Football has an AWESOME history with some GREAT players who played the game for PRIDE and LOVE to the Hawaii people as I am so HONORED to be part of that begining era !

  202. wafan September 10, 2010 10:28 pm

I wonder if Mr. A-House is able to sleep tonight.

  203. al September 10, 2010 10:29 pm

i believe the mckinley reynolds was one of the greatest athletes at uh. i remember he came from serving a stint in the service. the guy was 6’3″/225lb. started off as a running back and also played tight end. on occasion he played defensive end. i want to say that he also took some snaps under center in an emergency.

then he goes out and tries out for the basketball team and makes it as a power forward.

he was drafteb by the saints in ’69 as a rb.

  204. wafan September 10, 2010 10:29 pm

    Nytal!

  205. al September 10, 2010 10:32 pm

on the contrary, keith ah yuen prepped at kamehameha school. he was an all stater who was this close to singing in the northwest at some pac8 college.

however, i believe it was tomey who told him to make a name for himself in the state that he so loved and would spend the rest of life at. and so he did.

    btw, the guy is tsaiko.

  206. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 10:39 pm

Well getting real late here folks as 2:00 am is 15 minutes away !

Thank you ALL for some GREAT memories of Warrior football names as the HISTORY

is among the BEST to some OUTSTANDING athletes who played for Hawaii and against some of the FINEST competition and players around the country who made up NCAA Division 1 football !

Time has certainly changed and Hawaii is now a throwing offensive machine as the run n shoot with pistol option can score on the national scene !

Good luck against Army as Hawaii Football is still KING of the Islands !

  207. RainbowCliff September 10, 2010 10:42 pm

Al, I stand corrected once again as Keith Ah Yuen a Kamehameha Warrior !

Rainbow Cliff mentioned the Ulufale family. They used to be Star Bulletin customers of mine for a short period while I was a paperboy, way back when. I graduated with one of their sisters. One of the brothers, Tino, broke my wirst while we played street ball one year. Youngest brother, Michael eventually went on from Campbell HS to BYU, to the Cowboys in Dallas.

Well, it’s Gameday! Four hours and counting…

Go, Warriors! Looking forward to a complete game in all three phases!!!
