Friday

Whoops.

Sorry for the late post. Our Black Friday crew spent the wee  hours in a heated battle with other nocturnal shoppers.  If only every football defense could be aggressive as that old lady who bulled her way to grab a ticket for a discounted television. (But, really, did she need to throw that stiff arm?)

Combine that with the tryptophan from the late Tom, and that explains the mid-day post.

It will be a busy day. The Warriors have a walk-through session this afternoon, the basketball teams play tonight, there’s the state championship games at the stadium, and the men’s volleyball team closes fall training with an intrasquad scrimmage at Maryknoll School.

I just made my own headline and JUST tried to post it, but oh well….

    Here it is anyway:

I’ll make a new blog headline:

    11/25/2011

    “Cleats to Okoles”

Tulane on a nine game losing streak, Warriors PISSED off, potential for the smallest crowd of the season.. BALLZ TO THE WALL and CLEATS TO OKOLES.

As Al would say: “nuff sed.”

    —–

Hey, how come we’ve never seen Gib Arnold and Calvin From Kona in the same place at the same time???? I wonder.

    Happy Garfield The Cat Day!

  4. Hawaiianbod November 25, 2011 11:40 am

    Happy chuuk day!

ST- are you going to be able to occupy the man cave where the new TV resideth?

  18. Kevin November 25, 2011 11:52 am

The summer time should be interesting for OcSports12. They SHOULD be showing many encores of the 2011-2012 sports seasons.

Just wish it was more organized or at least they’d list what games they are re-broadcasting.

The only thing is I wonder how long K-5 will continue to show VINTAGE UH games. They really should have done this in the past more often and not just NOW when they are no longer the home of UH sports.

  19. SteveM November 25, 2011 11:52 am

Black Friday. I’m soooo tempted by an ad for the dual wireless karaoke mic system that Rasu Begasu had at Sato-Ya this past September. Tsaiko-Vegas 2011 seems so long ago.

  20. Slugger November 25, 2011 11:57 am

Wat dat? Like when you give in and do the yardwork? 😈 😆

  22. Derek November 25, 2011 12:01 pm

Watched the Houston-Tulsa game. The Cougars were impressive on the road. If they win the Conf. USA title game over S. Miss, they will be 13-0 and I think they would be deserving of a BCS bowl game. Boise St. who should finish 11-1 is also deserving of a BCS bowl game.

I still think the NCAA should have a playoff.

The FCS has 20 teams in the playoffs and tomorrow is the first round with 4 games (8 teams). Next week, the 2nd round on Dec. 3 there are 8 games (16 teams), and on some the following weeks. This is a true championship which is contested in all other sports, except NCAA Division I (FBS) football. If there is a playoff there would be enough money from TV revenue to benefit all 120 Divsion I schools, including Hawaii. Somehow, people have got to come to their senses.

  23. d1shima November 25, 2011 12:02 pm

Speaking of which, thinking about all the stuff I was supposo get done today. 👿

Shhhh…Mrs. d1shima is taking a nap so I can finish the LSU-Arkansas game.

    heheheh

  29. Kevin November 25, 2011 12:13 pm

My plan of action is to buy a H sticker at regular price and see if I can get some Oakleys at HALF off. 😆 😆 😆

Time to test to see if Rainbowtique employees read the blog as well.

  30. d1shima November 25, 2011 12:15 pm

    Derek,

D2 and D3 moving to Second Round tomorrow.

Not a fan of the “short” brackets (i.e.-20 teams in FCS; 24 in D2) which give a big advantage to the higher seeds who draw a bye. Prefer the full bracket (32 teams) like in D3. Despite the fact that a top seed will usually draw an AQ, at least they still have to go thru all the game prep and put it at risk like everyone else.

My nephew-in-law has a man cave in his basement. The whole basement with wet bar, microwave, and half bath. Computer setup, sound system, 50″+flat screen TV, etc.

I was envious. Niece says she seldom goes down there because it’s too messy…

    …. taking notes, ST? 🙂

  38. duffer November 25, 2011 12:43 pm

Waaaaay OFF topic. Was Doing some research on Aunty Genoa Keawe and ran across this entry from the Moke Young Family

I played PAL basketball with Keith Ah Yuen, the Grandson of Auntie Genoa and now that I look back, he had a very similar way about him that resembles one of Hawaii’s Finest Role Models.

    That’s our own Pride!!!

  39. Stretch November 25, 2011 12:45 pm

that’s one BIG role model everyone can follow

  41. Capitolist/WassupDoc November 25, 2011 12:51 pm

Just picked up the Board of Regents meeting agenda:

    9 am

    Wednesday, November 30, 2011

John A. Burns School of Medicine – MEB 314

    651 Ilalo Street – Kaka`ako Makai

Agenda item VI: Report on Gifts, Grants & Contracts

(NOTE – September much improved over the first two months of this fiscal year)

    From September 1 through September 30, 2011 – $126,741,483

    Total# of GG&C 282

    From September 1 through September 30, 2010 – #128,048,228

    Total# of GG&C 270

    OFFICIAL 2010-2011 YEAR-TO-DATE: $251.543,333

UNOFFICIAL 2011-2013 YEAR TO DATE: $203,224,836

There’s definitely a pick-up in these outside monies when compared to earlier months both last and this current fiscal year.

Agenda Item VII – 5: Acceptance of University of HJawai`i at Manoa Intercollegiate Athletics Financial Statements and Related Reports for the Year Ended June 30, 2011

NOTE – Agenda Item III is the Public Comment Period. I hope to be there in time to hear the comments since I’ve been told that there is a nascent but growing move by undergraduate students to go after the football program. Technically speaking, the issue is not on the Agenda, but since the Department of Athletics $$$$ report inludes salaries & related expenses, these comments may be allowed.

  42. duffer November 25, 2011 12:52 pm

I remember about ten years ago at a friend’s birthday party during Kuhio Day in some place on Kalakaua. I saw Aunty playing live and it was more than a chicken skin moment for me. My parents used to listen to her recordings when I was younger. Brought tears to my eyes as she was a performing.

Pride was/is lucky to be around a icon on Hawaiian music.

Liz — I never been to your place, but you did cross my mind when I was writing about nephew-in-law…probably because of the 27″ iMac he had and 3 cats (versus your two) which I didn’t mention. 🙂

  45. Slugger November 25, 2011 1:01 pm

UH is having a Black Friday sale on tickets, 30% off today only. I think I saw the Wahine VB Regional games listed. Maybe I can get that price at the ticket window today.

Shoot, it’s almost time for the first WBB game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Showdown tourney at 3 pm. Women play CAL at 5pm and then the Men play at 7:30 pm.

    GO BASKETBOWS (Wahine & Kane)!!!

    still get chance though,

    GO WARRIORS!

  53. AlaWai November 25, 2011 2:12 pm

    @Couch Potato

Common thread. In recent years we have put major lickins on these teams. Whether we went to their house or they came to ours, they had major issues to settle. That’s why sometimes good to play big but walk humble. “What goes around, comes around” comes to mind. Time to show up and focus on one opponent, Tulane. Go Warriors!

  54. ai-eee-soos November 25, 2011 2:15 pm

    # 52 – no can figgah

    but, yeah still get chance

    GO Warriors.

  55. Couch potato November 25, 2011 2:42 pm

    yep,

    GO WARRIORS!

and here’s hoping the NCAA vb committee thinks harder and give the Wahine a good seed.

  56. Kevin November 25, 2011 2:49 pm

I just saw the words: Wahine… harder… and give.

Mind went blank for a sec.

  57. Couch potato November 25, 2011 2:50 pm

    Kevin, you forgot “seed”.

  58. Couch potato November 25, 2011 2:52 pm

  60. wafan November 25, 2011 3:09 pm

    CP . . .

    Cup.

  61. wafan November 25, 2011 3:18 pm

Geez, Hawai’i Walmart incident made the national news.

    Kind of shame.

  62. Couch potato November 25, 2011 3:28 pm

no need be shame, it’s just competition.

would be hilarious if i show up in line next year with full-on riot gear.

  63. Kevin November 25, 2011 3:36 pm

Are these WalMart shoppers on ALCOHOL??????????

I thought alcohol made people act this way??? Oh wait… PERSONALITY ISSUES MAKE PEOPLE ACT THIS WAY.

These reports of shopping incidents are yielding FAR FAR FAR FAR more dangerous behavior than when I was at a concert last weekend and there were TONS of people participating in the consumption of MANY alcoholic beverages.

Who would have thought??? Crazy middle aged women have the same potential for disruptive behavior as drunk middle aged males with deep rooted issues because they got cut from their high school football team???????????

  64. Kevin November 25, 2011 3:37 pm

    12/21/2012.. WHAT I HAVE I BEEN SAYING?????????

We’re all gonna eat each other. we’re only gonna die from our own arrogance so we might as well have some fun!!!

  65. Couch potato November 25, 2011 3:43 pm

good thing neva have ndamukong suh standing in line at walmart.

  66. al November 25, 2011 3:53 pm

#38…news travels slow to maui don’t it. they must surely miss the ferry.

  67. al November 25, 2011 3:54 pm

stretch…you better off getting 70% discount on the football season tickets.

  68. Kevin November 25, 2011 3:57 pm

People lose their balance all the time.

Not sure if attempting to stomp someone is a usual result tho.

  69. al November 25, 2011 3:57 pm

i was curious to understand the logic behind the thinking…would retaining current hc effect one’s decision to purchase season tickets next year?

season ticket holders are typically lifelong purchasers and supporters.

i’d be more concerned about the occasional ticket buyer/attendee as they make up 60-70% of a sold out aloha stadium.

  70. Pomai November 25, 2011 3:57 pm

I have gone through three computer in the last week so if I have missed your pix sorry.

he shows no respect for the game.

let him go work for the wwe.

  72. Derek November 25, 2011 4:01 pm

I don’t care what Suh says. He IS a dirty player. And he should get suspended for stomping on a player on Thanksgiving Day. Thanks a lot, Suh!!!!!! How do you do?????

  73. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 25, 2011 4:01 pm

    al,

you bring up a good point. i am going to renew regardless of who coaches next year or in 2013. UHAD has people like me and my entire tailgating group by the walnuts…we don’t see cancelling seats our family has held for decades as an option over a coach.

its the people who come to games occasionally that i would want to attract and have them consider being season ticket holders.

  74. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2011 4:04 pm

Ever heard of a company taking four weeks to fix a car?

I’d love to see the “labor” tally.

  75. chopsueyboy November 25, 2011 4:18 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme

we’ve been going to football games for 40 years.

I think there’s been a few coaching change over this time period.

Doesn’t matter who the coach is, we support the team.

  76. Kevin November 25, 2011 4:23 pm

    Al,

Unwritten code in pro-wrestling. You have the ability to hurt your opponent aka partner, but you just don’t do it.

Suh would be better off in MMA.

  77. anklebiters November 25, 2011 4:24 pm

    Pomai:

i’d be more concerned about the occasional ticket buyer/attendee as they make up 60-70% of a sold out aloha stadium.

I ain’t giving up my seats, I like em and I sure as hell won’t start over from scratch because I’ve HAD IT with a certain someone. Won’t let that person get the last laugh to the bank for sure.

But I believe the answer is YES. It will have an effect.

Another lingering thought in the back of some people’s minds is that they also might really start to lose any remaining confidence they may have with UH administration and Jim Donovan if we lose out and don’t make a bowl game or make a bowl game and lose again and yet the current HC is retained.

  79. Kekoa November 25, 2011 4:36 pm

Pomai ~ i’m back to my usual winning score.

    UH ~ 56

    Tulane ~ 14

    Go get ’em Warriors!

  80. Old Diver November 25, 2011 4:41 pm

I agree with al, I renew my Hawaii Bowl tickets every year despite the pre-season predictions that we might end up undefeated and go to a BCS bowl.

  81. Pomai November 25, 2011 4:45 pm

#69 – as a matter of fact I will be buying season tickets for the first time, I have always bought each game one at a time(don’t ask me why) but next year will be season ticket time.

  82. duffer November 25, 2011 4:46 pm

    @ al, #66

  86. LizKauai (macbook) November 25, 2011 5:01 pm

    Get well soon, Kekoa!

    Before tomorrow!!!

    Coming with kulolo…

  87. Matt November 25, 2011 5:04 pm

Wahine down 19-12 in set 1.

  88. Bowwar November 25, 2011 5:08 pm

Al: The truth is that if you WIN they’ll come…However people in Hawaii are spoiled and CHEAP. They want FIRST CLASS but not willing to pay for it. What people forget sometimes is that the Warriors are the only game left in town aside from High School sports. We lost the Islanders, Hawaiians, Leis, etc. over the lack of support…

Being a long time season ticket holder, the Warriorsnis one of my MUST expendenditures for each year as it provides me ample entertainment during the Fall & Spring. The worse times were the Von Appen years…What we’re experiencing pales in comparison to watching the team during the Von Appen years.

  89. Matt November 25, 2011 5:10 pm

    CSF wins first set 25-14.

  90. Bowwar November 25, 2011 5:14 pm

I still back Mack…I’m buying my season tickets supporting the Warriors & Not trying to undermine them.

  91. duffer November 25, 2011 5:27 pm

Na Wahine trailing in the first half 17-10 with 11:40 to go

  92. duffer November 25, 2011 5:33 pm

Na Wahine trailing by 1. 9:18 to play in the first half

  93. Matt November 25, 2011 5:36 pm

Wahine VB wins second set 25-16. Match tied one set apiece.

  94. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 25, 2011 5:41 pm

So in other words, I am buying it because I enjoy Hawaii football and enjoy the program.

The program as a whole is BIGGER than any one player, team, coach, W-L record.

Don’t want to be a called a bandwagon jumping scallywag.

  95. LizKauai (macbook) November 25, 2011 5:47 pm

    GO WAHINE!!!

  96. duffer November 25, 2011 5:50 pm

    I’m a full Mack backer… But sometimes I wish he’ll says something like this…

“I just want you to know something,” Les Miles said in his postgame news conference. “There will be no way that this football team comes to Atlanta and not play their best. Just so you know.”

  117. papajoe2 November 25, 2011 6:45 pm

  126. bigislandkurt November 25, 2011 8:58 pm

Don’t blame the fans. Blame Hawaii itself. There are just too many other things to do than go to the UH game during a struggling season. It’s a whole new generation of fans, but one thing still certainly applies:

    Winning cures all.

    BIK

in case anyone’s intested, and haven’t heard ….

No. 1 seed Kahuku defeated second-seeded Punahou 30-24 on Friday night to win the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Football Championship at Aloha Stadium.

  129. 3-Prong November 25, 2011 10:01 pm

Big congratulations to Red Raiders and Raiders for D1 and D11 championships. Guess you can’t always buy championships with scholarships.

  130. al November 25, 2011 10:52 pm

    double red raider victory.

it was iolani who donated old uniforms to the newly formed and under financed kahuku high school football program. thus, the kahuku team was dubbed the red raiders and their school colors became red and black.

  131. Stretch November 25, 2011 11:17 pm

Was at the stadium tonight and witnessed a few things I haven’t seen happen there in a LONG time…

    – 50yd field goals the the Punahou kicker. I know it was only warm up and with a tee, but still very impressive.

    – Students in the stands jumping around and cheering on the team

    – Timeouts being called within 5 seconds of when it supposed to be called.

  132. LizKauai (iPad) November 25, 2011 11:19 pm

    Ugh. Boot commercials?

    See somma you manana.
