Freaky Friday

With a bye this weekend and the next game set for next Friday in San Jose, today became “Game-Plan Friday” for the Warriors, the time of the week when they implement the strategies that will be used against the coming opponent.

The Warriors spent an hour reviewing videos and discussing the game plan, then went out to Ching field for 75 minutes of practice and another 15 minutes of sprints. They will not practice this weekend.

The Warriors began crafting the 64-player travel roster for the San Jose trip.

During this morning’s meeting, it was announced that Bubba Poueu-Luna, who had two interceptions and a sack in Thursday’s Scout Bowl, has been added to the travel roster. It will be Poueu-Luna’s first road trip of the season, and a homecoming of sorts. He lived for several years in a NorCal town near Santa Rosa.

Also, Kenton Chun received some action as a placekicker today. Chun and Tyler Hadden shared duties for the first two games before Hadden handled all of the placekicking duties. Hadden was the only UH kicker on the past trip to Louisiana Tech. UH head coach Greg McMackin said no decision on the placekicking duties will be made until next week.

Having a bye week before a Friday road game is perfect timing for the Warriors. It is especially useful since the Warriors had some players that needed time off for their injuries.

The extra prep time is also nice, especially since SJSU has to play a Saturday game at BYU. The Friday game gives SJSU one less day to prepare for UH.

Air Force is talking about going football-only in the MWC and putting the rest of their teams in a conference such as the Missouri Valley. The MWC already showed they would take football-only schools when they added UH.

Air Force and the Mountain West have discussed the possibility of Air Force remaining in the conference for football, but taking its other sports to another conference.

Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson confirmed the discussions between himself and Air Force. The Missouri Valley Conference would be the most likely destination for Air Forceā€™s non-football sports if it pulls those programs out of the Mountain West.

Wahine Basketball Season ticket renewals are going on right now. 22 home games for $70 adult, $60 senors, $30 student (4-high school) and UH student with ID free. There are 6 home games that will be played before the men’s games. Wahine season ticket holders will be able to stay and sit in an assigned upper level seat for the men’s game. There is also an option to purchase a parking pass $94 for wahine regular season.

  56. madeinhawaii October 7, 2011 9:10 am

With Hawaii and Air Force as Football only.. that makes it an even number for other sports in the MWC… kind of works out for them, eh?

  57. madeinhawaii October 7, 2011 9:11 am

Oh wait… did they add some non-football members recently, too?

  58. madeinhawaii October 7, 2011 9:13 am

Nope.. doesn’t look like it. WAC did.. not MWC. So MWC will have 10 football members and 8 for other sports as of next year.

  84. Bowwar October 7, 2011 11:42 am

Wish they quit screwing around with the kickers…No kicker will function right if the line doesn’t block. Aside from the two blocked kicks due to line protection, Hansen’s kicks were solid and true.

  85. HawaiiMongoose October 7, 2011 11:42 am

I don’t see Air Force moving its non-football sports to the MVC. Historically that conference is almost as strong as the MWC in basketball, and stronger in baseball. Air Force would be no more competitive there than in the MWC. However I could see Air Force targeting another conference like the Summit League, where it could play non-powerhouse but still Division 1 schools like North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, UNO (University of Nebraska at Omaha) and UMKC (University of Missouri at Kansas City).

  86. Bowwar October 7, 2011 11:44 am

Somethings screwy with the kick-offs too…Hansen does seem to have a strong leg, but he’s being asked to “pop-up” his kicks which minimizes returns but concedes any position within the 20 yard line….

  87. Bowwar October 7, 2011 11:47 am

You don’t need two placekickers on a roadtrip…Decide on one and let their legs determine their success. The breakdowns appear to be in the middle of the line, which is unexplainable, as you would expect your oline to protect accordingly.

    Simon Cowell’s birthday gets a mention??? AUWEā€¦.

    Let me fix thisā€¦

Happy Birthday to Rainbow Wahine softball alum Dr. Tracie Uchima.

Dr. Uchima is an alum of UH and Michigan State and is now a veterinarian in her home state of California.

Dr. Uchima was a part of the 2003 WAC Championship team and was the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2005.

We received her written brief bio as part of the booster club’s newsletter last year found at this link:

    http://www.nawahine.com/vol1issue5.html

It’s a great first hand account of the sacrifices a student-athlete makes to acheive her goals on the field and off of it.

  95. Garret October 7, 2011 12:15 pm

What’s the latest scoop on conference re-alinement?

Noticed that the supposed announcement from Missouri never happened.

    tommui,

Missouri is still figuring out what they will do. They

The funny thing is that the instability in the Big 12 started when *Missouri* let it be know last year that they were going to the Big 10…only they didn’t actually get an invitation and Nebraska was chosen over them. Nebraska wouldn’t have even started looking around if Missouri hadn’t stirred things up.

The latest reports out of Alabama said that Missouri doesn’t have enough votes to get invited to the SEC. The SEC also has a lot of pride and probably doesn’t like the fact that Missouri would leave the SEC for the Big 10 if they ever could get an invitation…and the SEC has no exit fee. The best business decision for the SEC would be to take Missouri to get the maximum TV deal, but they might end up taking another school to go to 14 due to geography and pride.

The Big 12 won’t know what it will do in the end until the Missouri situation is settled. With Texas/ESPN agreeing not to show high school games or highlights on the LHN, the other Big 12 schools and TCU are solid for the conference.

  96. Garret October 7, 2011 12:16 pm

It looks like the ACC may stop at 14 schools so UCONN and Rutgers may have to stay in the Big East.

Commissioner John Swofford says the Atlantic Coast Conference has begun talks to renegotiate its television deal with ESPN after deciding to expand to 14 teams.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Swofford said Friday that the league is “very settled” at 14 members after announcing last month it would add Pittsburgh and Syracuse from the Big East. It’s still unclear exactly when those schools would begin play in the ACC. Big East bylaws require a 27-month notice and $5 million exit fee.

    http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2011-10-07/acc-begins-to-regnotiate-its-tv-deal-with-14-teams

  97. Garret October 7, 2011 12:19 pm

The Big 10 says that they aren’t expanding, so the Big East will be spared from raiding by them also. That probably means that the Big East will be only in need of adding a few schools…and their average school ranking will be higher than the MWC (thank you UNLV, New Mexico, and this horrible nonconference year for the MWC) in the BCS AQ standings.

“We have what we want,” Delany said after his appearance at a Nebraska booster luncheon. “My phone isn’t ringing off the hook. People understand we’re pretty serious about what we’re saying.”

Delany said expanding the Big Ten beyond 12 teams could negatively affect scheduling and relationships among the schools.

“Our objective is to have great competition, a great student-athlete experience, have institutions that understand each other and can collaborate and do things like the Big Ten Network, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation,” he said. “For us, we always would need to make a compelling case for expansion. Not any case. A compelling case.”

  99. Garret October 7, 2011 12:24 pm

The Big 12 has apparently been talking with Notre Dame about putting their non-football sports in the Big 12 instead of the Big East. If the Big East loses too many teams (like how the Big 12 took TCU and the ACC took Pitt/Syracuse), Notre Dame might start looking around and they already were publicly rejected by the ACC for their non-football teams.

I would think that a home run for the Big 12 would be for Missouri to stay, BYU to join, and Air Force (football only) and Notre Dame (everything except football) to get them to 12 schools.

It almost surely won’t happen and Louisville will join, but it is just a thought I had.

  100. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 7, 2011 12:24 pm

*On Navy to the Big East*

Doesn’t seem like Navy is going to be jumping to the Big LEast any time soon. Navy wants the league to be more stable before they consider a move, yet the league kinda needs Navy to be stable to begin with.

    LOVE IT!

From Navy AD Gladchuk after the TCU announcement (Big LEast called Navy after the TCU announcement).

ā€œAs I said from the beginning, our position remains comfortable as an independent,ā€ Gladchuk said. ā€œWeā€™ve had discussions with the Big East about possible membership. There is no timetable or sense of urgency on our part. We asked the Big East to stabilize. Obviously this is a step back for them.ā€

  101. Mrs. A-House October 7, 2011 12:40 pm

    Happy Aloha Freaky Friday Everybody!

First, my deepest condolences to Kymry and her family on the loss of our dear Tsaiko friend, Gary. We will miss his charm and million-dollar smile. May he rest in peace.

Second, boy this 2011 Warrior football season was projected to be an exciting one, and our Warriors have not disappointed so far. So what that they stumbled a little bit on the road at UW and UNLV. True fans don’t caste aspersions on these fine young men who have dedicated so much of their time, blood, sweat and tears, interspersed with grueling academics to representing our state, school, family and friends on the football playing field. The past two games are positive indicators that the best of the rest of the season is yet to come.

Third, belated kudos to Rasu Begasu and Rich 2176 for their extensive time and effort into providing the traveling Tsaiko fans with a fun and enjoyable visit to LV. I was very happy to have had the chance to reacquaint myself with my dear Tsaiko friends who live out-of-state and meet some new ones (mahalo for your autographs). Mr. A-House turned a lot of female heads as he tooled around town in his rented but snazzy Mitsubishi Eclipse…dark charcoal metallic gray, two-door sports car. As he drove around, why he continued to flex his biceps as he rested his arm on the driver’s open window?? I can’t imagine why.

Fourth, Happy Birthday good wishes to Wassupdoc…truly a tireless, selfless individual who pursues a passion for continually lobbying for the good of every one of us.

Lastly, my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have expressed on this blog good wishes as I celebrate my birthday today. Mr. A-House gets off easy…I am a low-maintenance roommate who is looking forward to a teri-chicken, brown rice, mac salad plate lunch from L&L. I’m a happy camper…blessed to have a wonderful loving family and equally special Tsaiko friends.

    Have a great weekend, everybody!!

  102. mctruck October 7, 2011 12:41 pm

  104. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 7, 2011 12:53 pm

Lets say the Big LEast gets the CUSA schools they want. UCF ECU etc…Louisville, WV still in limbo as to whether or not they get a Big 12 invite.

UConn still wants out, don’t think adding CUSA schools will simply make them happy.

Do the service academies jump to a conference where at any given time the foundation beneath them could crumble?

Somewhere, somehow, someone has to THINK about feasting today and being vagrant tomorrow. And it seems as though those in charge are taking that thought seriously. I am happy for that.

I think our MWC remains the way it is for the time being at least. It’s no where near ideal with the dead weight at the bottom, but its a solid mid-major league.

I just heard about this kid Jaydon Mickens. He’s a soft USC commit but is gonna take a visit to UH… Anyone know what our chances are with this kid? And when is he taking his official visit out here?

  112. Bowwar October 7, 2011 1:20 pm

Yikes! Yes ST, I meant Hadden…The guy is a Freshman and will be with the program for another 4 years. None of this kicker roullette is doing him any good and doesn’t help his confidence. Isn’t Hadden also the back-up punter too?

  113. Bowwar October 7, 2011 1:21 pm

err…Hadden is a red-shirt freshman, but is the future of our program unless we plan on recruiting another kicker.

  114. Bowwar October 7, 2011 1:25 pm

With all of the QB problems in the NFL and injuries, you would think that one team would consider giving Colt Brennan a shot…What is the big hang-up? I really think Colt needs to get a better agent who’ll get him try-outs with the various teams.

Funny, but I don’t hear anything about the UFL…Are they playing? Can’t see them as a “feeder” system to the NFL.

  115. krump1_AKA_protector October 7, 2011 1:33 pm

    couch potato on #68,

Can’t krump to save my life; it’s in name only. Dirty Harry (one of my favorite Eastwood personas) once said: A man’s got to know his limitations…and I do.

  116. Pomai October 7, 2011 1:35 pm

ST that’s a doctor of animals that is…

  117. krump1_AKA_protector October 7, 2011 1:39 pm

    Bowwar on #87,

As far as I know, the team DID only take 1 kicker (Hadden) to Ruston on the past road trip.

I DO agree that the blocking / protection is a concern as is the kick-offs and the kick-off coverage; it seemed that La Tech constantly was starting near mid-field.

  118. wafan October 7, 2011 1:56 pm

For youngsters, if you want to see a famous receiver – see Elroy Crazylegs Hirsch, who played for the Rams 1949 to 1957 and played in the old Hula Bowl many years ago when some pros played with local players against a college all-star team.

See his leg movement at about 2:31 in the video:

It doesn’t have to be pretty nor orthadox.

  147. SteveM October 7, 2011 3:56 pm

    RE: #135

<b<mikey — have you tried Orbitz or other national site — if you don’t mind flying another carrier with stopover.

    e.g. Orbitz

    OCT 12 UA 460 (Boeing 767) HNL -LAX 0711-1537. UA 6519 LAX-SJC 1637-1743.

OCT 16 (return is messier. SJC-SAC-SFO-HNL) I would search further/change day

    Round trip fare per person listed at $552 +75 taxes/fees = $627

AA is a red-eye on the 12th and departs 0600 on the 16th but is one connection through LAX both ways TOTAL per person = $682

Check the options, sometimes changing one date can make a huge difference.

Yeah…the Hawaiian Air fuel surcharges must be REALLY high… šŸ˜

  148. bigislandkurt October 7, 2011 4:08 pm

I’m pretty certain Colt is pau already. This league does not wait for anybody. And there are only a few slots for many people….QB’s especially. If anything, he should try to take his talents up north. That car accident really set him back…..and possibly out.

    BIK

  149. Slugger October 7, 2011 4:21 pm

    iwwthm,

BSU = Unorthodox and creative… Wonder who came up with that idea. Their Offensive Coordinator Brent Pease was at NAU…

  150. Slugger October 7, 2011 4:24 pm

Just hope Fresno St gets some points on the board.

  151. Garret October 7, 2011 4:25 pm

A few days ago the PonyFans head writer reported that 2 sources confirmed that SMU had been approached by the SEC and there was interest on both sides. The site showed a portion of an email with details of the discussion.

The president of an SEC university (which was not identified), they said, initiated contact with someone familiar with SMU’s realignment effort, and the conversations did center around the possibility of SMU as a target institution for further SEC expansion.

Part of the attractiveness of SMU, the sources said, stemmed from the fact that as a private university with lofty academic standards, SMU could become “the Vandy (Vanderbilt) of the West Division” of the SEC. Considerable attention also was paid to the conference’s desire to have a presence in the Dallas/Fort Worth market and the value of tapping into the Dallas area’s base of potential corporate sponsors.

  152. Garret October 7, 2011 4:28 pm

Now the head of the SMU Rivals site has been posting some interesting things today.

#SMU now in serious discussions with the #SEC

@TylerScott14 Source from the SEC says so….

@tigolbitties07 reliable but we’ll have to see… I was shocked when I found out

  153. RedZone October 7, 2011 4:28 pm

Gee Fresno St defensive players ripping off the helmets of the Boise players and the refs doing nothing. The thing that bothers me the most is that we play them later.

  154. Derek Faavi October 7, 2011 4:51 pm

why is London sitting on the bench when it’s crystal clear that he is so much better than Sila? Yeah, a player can’t lose their job due to injury, but when you can’t do a decent job at getting the ball to the qb, you shouldn’t be playing. San Jose always plays tough, and add it’s a nationally televised game on the road, those 6 or 7 bad snaps by Sila may cost UH the game. Coach Gordy needs to do what’s best for the team and start London.

  155. Marti October 7, 2011 4:55 pm

Thank for information. I have idea from your Blag. I will back again. Thank šŸ™‚

  156. papajoe2 October 7, 2011 5:00 pm

Phillies and Victorino loses to the Cardinals and is eliminated. I watched Ryan Howard the last few playoffs and he seems to disappear during crunch time. 0-15/16 in this series. He made the last out and apparently hurt himself. Although I’m disappointed in the results, I hope Howard is not seriously hurt.

  157. papajoe2 October 7, 2011 5:02 pm

What ever happened to Dean Wilson. The last time I heard of lhim on the PGA tour was at least a month and a half ago. He withdrew from that tournament and is currently in the 140s of the money standings. I believe the top 125 earns exemptions for next year.

  158. papajoe2 October 7, 2011 5:09 pm

Michele Wie still at even par after 11 holes in today’s (2nd) round. Yani tseng didn’t tee off yet and is at -7 after 1 round.

  159. papajoe2 October 7, 2011 5:11 pm

Bosie State up 43-0 over da Fresnicks. BSU has a interception and is inside the 20 with 6 minutes left in the 3rd.

  160. polywarrior4life October 7, 2011 5:14 pm

BSU’S second team in and scores. Now 50-0 in the 3rd. I hope UH is prepared for San Pepe State because there are no other games that ESPN can shift to if it is a blow out.

  162. Slugger October 7, 2011 5:15 pm

  167. Dennis Halloran October 7, 2011 5:43 pm

My last contact with the Brennan family was that Colt was looking at the coaching career entry jobs.

Had breakfast with Mater Dei Letterman’s club alumni and sat with a Heisman winner, an all pro QB(Guest), and a US Open winner(Guest). Now that is clout for a HS.

  168. jm2375 October 7, 2011 6:05 pm

    Off-topic but still 1 of da F’s…

Saw an episode of Diners, Drive-in & Dives where they went to this place near UNLV, Four Kegs, where their specialty is stromboli. Now, I’m craving stromboli. Is there anywhere on island that I can get a good one? (Not Sbarro). I haven’t had a good one since I moved from DC.

  169. LizKauai (iPad) October 7, 2011 6:13 pm

Yea! Finally get to see the Wahine. Watched the Pepperdine game replay at #1 Son’s house.

What a crowd! Looking forward to seeing the Hawaii 5-0 segment at the Stanley.

Dennis, thanks for the Colt news.

  170. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 7, 2011 6:20 pm

    #168,

Antonio’s across Kahala Mall has decent stromboli.

Doesn’t compete with the nyc/nj stuff but it is the best they have out here.

  171. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 7, 2011 6:23 pm

And if you so choose, the NEX Pearl Harbor has a decent “sbarro”-like pizza place called Famous Familia which is as tried and true NYC chain. You find them all over the city..but they ain’t no Rays.

They bring in the water for the pizza right outta the Hudson ;-).

But they have stuff that is somewhat decent too.

I figured out more interesting things on this fat loss issue. A single issue is that good nutrition is especially vital if dieting. A huge reduction in junk food, sugary foodstuff, fried foods, sweet foods, beef, and white-colored flour products might be necessary. Retaining wastes harmful bacteria, and toxins may prevent ambitions for fat-loss. While a number of drugs briefly solve the condition, the horrible side effects aren’t worth it, and in addition they never supply more than a short-lived solution. This is a known proven fact that 95% of diet plans fail. Thank you for sharing your opinions on this web site. food lovers fat loss system reviews
