Former Warriors hit the job market

Today is the first of several NFL auditions for former UH players.
Ryan Mouton plays in today’s East-West Shrine Game in Houston, which is near his hometown of Katy. (He attended the same high school as actress Renee Zellweger, who still makes grown men cry when they hear her say, “You had me at hello …”)
Scouts want to see Mouton display his bump-and-run coverage skills in this game, which will not allow blitzing. Mouton was the Warriors’ best cover defender, but out of necessity, he often played in the middle of the field as a nickelback or free safety. For this game, he’ll be used exclusively as a corner.
Defensive end David Veikune and long-snapper Jake Ingram are set for the coming week’s Senior Bowl workouts in Mobile, Ala. Tim Grasso, who helps coach in a kicking camp in Alabama, also made the trip. Grasso was UH’s holder the past two seasons, and he is available, if needed, to catch Ingram’s snaps during workouts.

    Re: Circuit City

Be aware that whatever you buy from now on, you are not buying from an on-going enterprise.
They have turned everything over to a company that is strictly there to liquidate the inventory. There may be some people around wearing Circuit City Unis but they are no longer there with customer service or retention in mind!
If you buy something be sure it is still factory-sealed and even then if you take it home and it doesn’t work, don’t expect the people at the Circuit City facility to help you!
btw, I’ve heard that they will not allow you to open things and power them up before you buy to ensure that it is working.
Really go in with your “eyes open”…Caveat Emptor

….and this is not even mentioning the pricing “abnormalities”>/b>

Way to go Tadd..not going to give his score but you are all going to be very happy………

  49. Garret January 17, 2009 1:08 pm

Someone already came out with a preseason top 25 list, even though it seems extremely early to me.

    TCU is #9
    BSU is #14
    Utah is #16

  50. duffer (iPhone) January 17, 2009 1:10 pm

Tadd is 7 under going to 18

  51. Garret January 17, 2009 1:11 pm

Utah State’s recently fired head coach is now the DC at Louisville. Given the salary escalation of BCS coordinators, he might actually be making more now than he did when he was the head coach at Utah State.

University of Louisville head football coach Steve Kragthorpe completed his defensive staff yesterday by naming Brent Guy the defensive coordinator and hiring Antonio Goss to coach safeties.

“Brent has a tremendous amount of experience and success as a defensive coordinator,” Kragthorpe said in a release. “I loved his defenses at Boise State and Arizona State. Those teams put up some excellent defensive numbers, and he coached some great players. Guy’s teams played great fundamental football and were well-coached.”

  52. duffer (iPhone) January 17, 2009 1:11 pm

    Finished 8 under

  53. Garret January 17, 2009 1:12 pm

Great to hear that Mouton is doing well today! This game (and the practices leading up to the game) is very important for his NFL future.

  54. 808ike January 17, 2009 1:12 pm

Tadd tied for first place (62) -8for the day.

  55. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 1:13 pm

anyone watching the East-West shrine game? I just turned it on now and Fresno’s Brandstater was moving the team down the field. There’s that Oklahoma receiver Johnson who’s got our big green H right on the front of his forehead. cool. he either likes our team or made friends with Mouton

  56. Garret January 17, 2009 1:13 pm

Wow, I checked Tadd’s score and he’s doing very well! Maybe the pressure was off after he made the cut and he used his momentum for today’s awesome round.

  57. Garret January 17, 2009 1:14 pm

Tadd is going to have a *huge* gallery following him around tomorrow! I hope that he can stay up there high on the leaderboard!

  58. Rob25 January 17, 2009 1:15 pm

    Good for Tadd!

Watching the East-West Shrine game because I got scolded by Stretch for watching Braveheart.

  59. Rob25 January 17, 2009 1:16 pm

    Love how they exchange stickers!!

Stretch, you and Addahknowjoe should have sent a whole bunch with Mouton.

  60. Rob25 January 17, 2009 1:18 pm

    Gartrell has a grill!!

  61. Garret January 17, 2009 1:18 pm

The reason I said #57 is that most of the players at the top of the leader board haven’t started their rounds yet (at least according to the site I just checked), so Tadd could end up between 5-15 at the end of today.

  62. Stretch January 17, 2009 1:21 pm

Hopefully the wind and rain start up so the guys in the afternoon can’t score

  63. Kazz January 17, 2009 1:26 pm

AWESOME to see the UH pep band at the Stanley last night!!!

    HOWEVER….

WHERE WAS THE INFAMOUS CHRIS RAWSON?!?!?!?!?!

I spent half of the first set looking and listening for him, but alas…. NOTHING!

Although the Manoa Maniacs tried to do their part.

  64. royson16 January 17, 2009 1:32 pm

With young Tadd having posted a low round of 62 and sitting a top the leader board as we speak, here’s wishing mother nature brings the worst of weather conditions on to the rest of the golfers contending with Tadd. With some of the field yet to tee off and also near -8 under as Tadd please mother nature bring an onslaught of torrential rains and whirling winds this afternoon to the rest of the golfers. Above all, make the weather miserable out there, please, so the remaining golfers post high scores…uga, uga…pausing and meditating and channeling black clouds towards the Sony Open…hehe.

  65. d1島 January 17, 2009 1:39 pm

Hmmmm…yep, I like the way Stretch said it better….

  68. Rob25 January 17, 2009 1:44 pm

I agree Kazz. I was surprised to hear the band as I was watching the game.

I thought that I saw somebody in the stands that looked like Rawson…thought maybe it was his brother.

  69. Rob25 January 17, 2009 1:46 pm

At least the West is making it a game now!

  70. Jason January 17, 2009 1:48 pm

Kazz: You didn’t hear me in the corner with sj-macro and myki? I was the lone voice yelling out from upper section AA. We saw you sitting across the way.

But yeah, we were wondering about Rawson, too. It’s not the same without him, yeah?

    Go Tadd! Go Moanalua! 🙂

  71. Kazz January 17, 2009 1:49 pm

    Rob,

From my seats last night, I did spot a former middle blocker sitting behind “Da Aunties”. I couldn’t remember his name. He played about two or three seasons ago. He kinda looked like Rawson though.

Don’t know if the TV caught it, but the band and the Maniacs made for some funny stuff while Pepperdine was on their side of the court.

Some of the female students were really giving it to the Pepperdine servers though. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but I’m pretty sure it was messed up. Hahahahahaha…

  72. Stretch January 17, 2009 1:51 pm

Hopefully the NFA wasn’t at the game last night then everything can continue, or else, it will be shutdown.

  73. Rob25 January 17, 2009 1:54 pm

Maybe the NFA shutdown Rawson’s brother…you know, it’s not very sportsmanlike for the home team to say anything less than complimentary of the opponent. This rule only applies to Hawaii though.

Wait…I forgot, the men’s VB team isn’t in the WAC.

  74. Kazz January 17, 2009 1:56 pm

I went home really happy knowing that we’ve got Steven Hunt for the long haul.

He’s fearless and is a true hustler, I can’t rememeber how many kills he finished with but last glance at the scoreboard I saw 17. Braddah just gotta work on his serves…. Speaking of serves.. Michael China??? What’s going on? That’s all I’ll say…

  75. Kazz January 17, 2009 2:00 pm

    NFA,

    U-F-A

  76. Stretch January 17, 2009 2:03 pm

Taunting the opposing teams has no place in having home court advantage.

  77. Kazz January 17, 2009 2:03 pm

Chris Rawson and Buti-Groove should get together.

The shirts to compliment the voice.

God forbid someone tries to bring back some life in the stands to Men’s Volleyball.

  78. Jason January 17, 2009 2:06 pm

Every college crowd should have thousands of Chris Rawsons.

  79. Rob25 January 17, 2009 2:06 pm

Last I heard, Hunt had 19 kills. He had a helluva night!

China…dude, they bring you in to serve…and…nuff said.

Stretch – Rawson’s bro is something like the whiteboard of a certain booster that I know.

  80. Rob25 January 17, 2009 2:08 pm

    Jason – For once, I agree with a Moanalua grad!! J/K 😆

    and zero NFA’s.

  82. Kazz January 17, 2009 2:11 pm

    Rob,

After a while I felt bad for China… a real long while. If my memory isn’t shot, I believe they were sub-ing China for Grgas to serve. If anything Grgas did fine.

But man, Sean Carney had me believing we could have at least tied to force set 4 into extra play, but the hole was too deep.

I know it’s late into his college career, but I’m a big Sean Carney fan. I think this team is going to live and die on his emotions this season… and the season is young!!!!

BTW, what’s the scoops on Josh Walker last night? Did Jim Leahey say anything about a possible injury?

  83. Kazz January 17, 2009 2:14 pm

    I’d make a horrible heckler.

I just get belligerent and angry and obscene to the point where they wouldn’t even understand what I am screaming…

  84. royson16 January 17, 2009 2:15 pm

    Kazz

Earlier Friday morning I was listening to a women caller on the L&L show going off on the men’s volleyball team and coaching. And mentioning how the fan’s interests in men’s volleyball has been disipating over the years because of how the team has no identity etc. She went off on Coach Wilton repeatedly, saying how she was upset at how he uses the teams timeouts infavorable. etc and how he doesn’t know how to coach. And the older Leahey was loving it, in me opinion, because he seemed to be in total agreement. After the women gets off the phone, the older Leahey muses and says we need people to speak up and be more like that caller. But the older Leahey conceded that many in Hawaii don’t campaign against the things they percieve that are wrong, especially when it does come to sports. Why I’m writing this posts is that during the women’s call she mentioned these observations that in all the years she’s been following the men’s volley ball team she has yet to see any cheerleaders or the school’s band at the games. Or on the court. And she had questioned repeatedly to the older Leahey why not. And he was in total agreement there should be. So can you see how that women’s call (wtgo btw to the women caller) may have precipitated a change? And the band was playing at the volleyball game last night..what for the first time that people can remember?.. And maybe perhaps people close to the program had been listening into this call.

  85. Kazz January 17, 2009 2:31 pm

    Royson16,

Maybe the e-mails to Coach Wilton cc’d to the associate band director could of helped also… 😛 .

  86. royson16 January 17, 2009 2:41 pm

Reading Yahoo Sports current NCAA president Myles Brand announces he has pancreatic cancer and the long-term prognosis is not good for him. These kind of stories where a person’s mortality is in question saddens me. And I do send thoughts and prayers to him and his family and supporters.

  87. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 2:54 pm

i’ll speak up for the band again.
for the longest time, coach wilton did not want the band there. he preferred to have vili. vili got really boring over the many years of doing the same thing over and over. they finally got the band to come back the other year. however, this is a volunteer band. they are made up of students that like sports and don’t mind coming out of their own time to the games. this is in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball games that they have to attend. during the fall season, the volunteer band can make all the wahine volleyball games because thats only one arena team they have to play for. there are also no volleyball games on football game days.
as for the cheerleaders, i’m not sure why they’re not there.
this has been discussed for years as to why volleyball crowds have diminished over they years.
my personal opinion is that the athletic department got greedy. when the place used to sell out, there were no bigger sports stars than both the men’s and women’s teams. however, that was during the first few years of having games in the arena. they didn’t know how to handle the ticketing compared to klum. all seats were general seating. this allowed for the fun, crazy, LOUD, young fans to be able to stand in line (to buy tickets and also get in) and get the best seats. this made the environment a great place to be at. this was during my years at UH. my group of friends spent many an overnighter trying to buy tickets or get a good seat.
uh saw all the $$$$ in the popularity and decided to make all seats reserved. get season ticket holders to cough up money to get the “good” lower bowl seats. this caused the fun fans to have to sit up in the nose bleeds with their signs and voices, never to be heard or seen from again. now its a boring place to be. i don’t blame fans. look, now not many of those season ticket holders go any more. look how many open seats there are.
    ok, off my pedestal.

  88. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 2:57 pm

oh yeah, back then, that was during the von-crappen/what-happened years for football. hawaii fans were looking for any successful team to support, and both our men’s and na wahine teams were.
those were also the glory years for our men’s basketball teams. the dynamic duo of AC & Alika. they sold out many a game too.

  89. Stephen Tsai January 17, 2009 3:15 pm

Yep, the NFA was there last night.

  90. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 3:20 pm

NFA better not be there tonight.

  91. Kazz January 17, 2009 3:23 pm

    Chawan,

I wonder how much of an attendance decline we’ll have to experience before UH athletics takes an even HARDER look at the ticket pricing structure at the Stanley?

Women’s basketball is already 6.00 gen admin. Now ST mentioned making Men’s Volleyball 10.00 gen admin and that would be a good price. A dollar less than 11.00 and just two more than the “nosebleeds”.

Now Men’s basketball and Wahine Volleyball draw the “larger” crowds at the Stanley and even at 15.00 gen admin for both of these programs would be a good value.

It would a BIG financial risk, but BIG problems need BIG risks to create a BIG solution.

  92. Kazz January 17, 2009 3:25 pm

    Ok,

SERIOUSLY… I wasn’t paying much attention in the previous blogs, but is the “NFA” an entity or an individual’s title?

Also, who stuck the centipede up their okole?

  93. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 3:26 pm

they should’ve made today’s wahine basketball game free for those with tickets to tonight’s game. they made tonight’s game free for those that bought the wahine game. they should’ve made it both ways.

  94. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 3:30 pm

i don’t even know who NFA is.

  95. jm2375 January 17, 2009 3:33 pm

    Good afternoon Tsai-kos!

I gotta agree with Kazz and c_c. Make all seats except maybe a few sections general admission. Watched the GU/Duke game this am 😥 and saw how a REAL student crowd acts – coordinated and wild. Did the Duke students ever sit down? When I was at GU, during the glory days, the student section at the Capital Center was behind the baskets. I remember that for big games, it was an overflow crowd and some students didn’t have a seat. We’d be trying to sit in the aisles. The staff wouldn’t let us sit there or anywhere else. BTW, the Cap Center was out in the ‘burbs and was about a 30-45 min drive in rush hour traffic.

  96. Kazz January 17, 2009 3:33 pm

    Chawan,

    Both ways?

If anything the current promo is a good incentive to get more butts in the seats for the Wahine game.

I think if people already bought their Men’s tickets, I don’t think they’d show up two hours earlier for a free game. Sad to say, but with the current state of the Wahine basketball program, you can’t give away a free ticket.

I’d hate to be Jim Bolla sitting in Jim Donovan’s office after this season.

No can compare Duke’s BB program with ours.

Heck, if we had that kind of team year in and year out, the Stanley would be packed even if the ticket prices for UH men’s basketball would have been the same it was in 2007 and years prior.

Really? I thought ADs wouldn’t go out of their way to “micro-manage” what arena staff people are supposed to do at their discretion. But I guess when they get a complaint they have to act…

I sat two rows behind MM-K last night. She seemed pretty intent on just watching the game, but again Mr. Rawson couldn’t be found anywhere in the arena last night.

  101. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 3:46 pm

the uh band was also often told by a certain person not to make noise or make it a home court advantage. if thats the case, lets just roll out the red carpet for the visiting teams. lets play their fight song. lets give them our home locker room and we’ll take theirs.
sometimes you wonder if some of these people have ever been to any big time school’s games. i’m glad JD is making changes.
our football team has played at some big venues the last few years and i hope thats left some people with a jealous taste in their mouths. hopefully that can roll over into the arena sports as well.

  104. Kazz January 17, 2009 3:55 pm

    Chawan,

You are not average at all sir! However in my defense I bought Nick Swardson tickets at Pipeline tonight. I bought them a while ago and thought that the show would be months from now. So I gave my Men’s tickets tonight to my brother and his friends.

  105. Kazz January 17, 2009 3:57 pm

Right now, with the Wahine BB program and the Men’s VB program having below .500 seasons to start and the Men’s struggling with a winning record, the bottom line is winning.

All this talk about pricing is nice and all, but just a supplement to a winning product on the court/field. Reduced prices/incentives will bring a little more people into the arena, but that will only last a short while and it is nothing more that a piece of “tissue paper over the wound” (not even a “bandage”). The “wound” is still open and bleeding.

The “stitches” are in the hands of the coaches that have to prepare their team to win.

I think Jim Donovan and Co. have done a fine job in trying to ease the pressure on people’s wallets with the reduced prices in tickets, food, etc. Especially having to balance revenue and losses in these crappy economic times.

Right now, the teams need to win to get a good balance of good event pricing and having a product on the court/field of “good value”.

  106. Kazz January 17, 2009 4:02 pm

    Stretch,

Would your dry-erase board have enough space to fit this:

“I really do not have any quarrels with your team, it’s players, and boosters. However, we here in the State of Hawaii and the fans of the University of Hawaii are very happy that you all could make the trip to compete in this athletic contest.

May the best person win. I will cheer for your student athletes as much as I will for ours because as we all know “it’s just a game”.

    Thank you.”

Hmmm… I wonder if we can all chant this in unison at the first UH football home game of 2009 also instead of “booing” the visiting team?

    😆

  107. chawan_cut January 17, 2009 4:05 pm

The things that go on while watching a football game.

    My favorites:

    1.Watching fans throwing paper airplanes.
    2.HPD making a tackle
    3. Fans volleying a beachball away from ushers and HPD
    4. Knowing the point spread of a game and watching some suspecting fans that bet on the game on the edge of their sits.
    5. The wave. And the reverse wave.
    6. Watching the elderly couple inconspicuously taking outside food from their attire and then hiding it when the ushers come around.
7.Watching fans yell obsenities at the refs.
    8. Receiving an elbow for every time I looked at an attractive women walking up the steps. And then giving her a returning elbow every time she looked at some attractive man walking up the same steps.
9.A chorus of boos, especially for a wrong play call
    10. The crescendo like pounding and cheering as Hawaii drives for a come from behind victory.
11.Watching the cheerleaders and listening to the band.
12.Watching the youngster’s in their seats idolizing their heroes on the field.
    13. The greatest feeling is exiting Aloha Stadium with the masses of people all as happy as myself and celebrating a victory.

Anyone know why UH makes a special effort to keep crowd noise/action down? Who made that decision and why?

Is the General Counsel’s office involved with the decision? Like, we don’t want to be sued if someone gets hurt.

I remember a lady filed a claim against the Honolulu Stadium and UH because a PAT hit her head while she was looking down for something in her purse. Dah, when you sit behind the goal post and a team is kicking the ball, you look up and watch what happens. Assumption of risk!!!

Is or are certain parts of UH still in the “paternal mode” like in the old plantation days? I grew up with this mentality and today am very against this attitude. Unionism is good, but it should have its limits. The leaders are the ones who have to be more innovative in what is needed by its members. To much of the same will kill unionism.

  171. roysan16@yahoo.com January 17, 2009 9:45 pm

In some of the games this past year the proverb “it’s not how you start out… it’s how you end up that’s important” is so true. For against Florida, Oregon State and Cincinnati we were out of the blocks fast. But couldn’t hold on and sustain. And then we were overwhelmed by our better opponents.

With the end of recruiting soon approaching, undoubtable, we also raced out of the blocks fast, too, in the race to secure commitments, and similarly like how we did against the better teams on the field. And I’m not suggesting that the recruiting results may badly pan out. But as in the same light of how the team raced out and did well against the better teams on the field and looked very well early on in games and then being overwhelmed by the opponent… and that of jumping out on the recruiting trail and maybe falling short and perhaps potentially missing out on potential star recruits as going through the growing pains as a team. And as a coach. I see a same correlation. But how I look at every failure, be it as how we raced out in games and how we’ve subsequently raced out in the recruiting picture and not being able to close out our opponents on the field or possibly not closing out the deal with some of the recruits, as these failures likely serves as a stimulus for the future where we can improve and get better on the field and on the recruiting trail. By doing both someday, we’ll be making our program more attractive to the recruits. It’ll come.

And what’s noteworthy, is that I envision Coach Mack as the type of person that doesn’t take kindly to the losses on the field, especially after coming out onto the field with full steam in a few of these games and then withering. And like wise, maybe, missing out on potential star recruits on the recruiting trail.. In fact, I think he loses a lot of sleep over this. And I don’t think he’ll ever rest peacefully not until the job is done, namely in his words,”consistently contend for the WAC title, be a perennial top 25 team, attract the best recruits on the island and have our boys graduate.”.

And I can feel this wave euphoria and idealistic, yet realistic thinking someday approaching and manifesting it self out–where Coach Mack’s words turn out to be prophetic. It’s not going to be soon, but someday down the road, I have this good feeling about this program. And Coach Mack. Not everything I agree with how does things, but I still have this good feeling. We have to this, this and this to be successful. And I agree.

The impetus, or moving force, we can see as some of what Coach Mack is doing has been positive steps in the program. And the program is going in the right direction. The fostering with the high school coaches, youth and alumni–all good. The speed and quickness camps all good. The pounding of the pavement and going out there and knocking on the doors of the recruits and winning the hearts of the recruit’s parents, too-is all good.

Where we were a year ago, especially how our facilities took a hit in the national and local media is a hugely improved today as some of the athletic complex, offices, locker rooms, showers and especially the field have been upgraded. Without a doubt this area has greatly improved and is gradually becoming aesthetically pleasing than it was ever in the past. The new practice field with lights and all– should better prepare the team. This is all good.

Like anything else in life there are stumbling blocks. Yet the higher the tree, the sweeter the plum. And this what the team and community wants. And reaching the top tier and hoping to get there comes by going all out–on the field against the best teams. And likewise taking our best shots with the recruits–win or lose–no pain, no gain.

So come recruiting day there may be some unsettling news. And long faces with recruits flip flopping. But how I see it if we get the likes of Jordon, Chauncey, Benson for OL. And Chad, Marcus, Veni and Kimo on defense to name a few we’ll be in good shape. The 3 QBs coming in also is good news, especially after I read where the star Texas Tech wide receiver(M. Crabtree) and top ten pick in the upcoming draft was a QB in HS and only had one reception as a receiver that maybe one of these boys might be switching to a new position.

Everything will be good. The impetus of the fans, especially as how I see how their support for the program with them unconditionally never wavering is very good. In fact, a lot of them are Tsaikos. Collectively, I’d venture and say and think that someday the Warrior will have it down pat-where they do come off the blocks fasts and end fast. This is will be great.

    Mahalo, roysan16!

  173. FloridaTed January 17, 2009 9:54 pm

I really don’t know anymore what’s wrong with the BBTeam. They fall apart much to easily and don’t seem to have any cohesiveness, especially when it counts. We can’t blame it on “new” players any longer.

The Coaches appear to be unable to make adjustments along the flow of the game and whenever things start going south, the players hang their heads and stand around. Is it just me or do others see it the same way?

The point guard certainly is not the only problem. They play good in spurts, just to fall to pieces in crunch time. Sorry, but in my book that’s on the coach. If we don’t see marked improvement by the last third of the season or at least next year, Nash is not the coach we had hoped for.

  174. niho mano January 17, 2009 10:04 pm

very well said roysan16, our team will be great and receive great recruits, and our coaches will become the best in the WAC, all we need is patience to let it develope…mahalo much….go warriors.

  175. Jason January 17, 2009 10:05 pm

When I had that seat behind the bench for the Rainbow Classic, I closely watched how Coach Nash and the other coaches interacted with the players. That night, they convinced me that they are a quality coaching staff. All of them are constantly communicating with the players and themselves, talking things through and whatnot. My problem was the players didn’t always have their heads in it. And I think a lot of that has to do with maturity. In society nowadays, young kids get coddled so much, and they take longer to grow up. A lot of times, it takes things like deaths or sickness in the family, or having a child early, in order to get young people to grow up. In a way, you don’t want them growing up too early, cause they should still enjoy their youth, but at the same time, you expect them to gain some maturity every year. I’m really starting to see a lack of that in the current generation (of which I am obviously a member). To me, that’s one of the bigger obstacles that high school and collegiate teams face, and even professional teams with their young but immature superstars.

  176. Jason January 17, 2009 10:10 pm

I think those of us in education or going into education have seen this too. Nowadays, teachers are working so hard because they not only have to teach the subject material, but they have to help kids with disciplinary issues, hardships, and whatnot. They come in nowadays and don’t treat people with respect. They violate others’ rights, and don’t give much concern to others’ feelings and needs. In the same way, coaches nowadays not only have to deal with teaching players the sport they play, but they have to get on their case about things like conditioning, academics, and whatnot.

Even something simple like running out the sprints in sudden change drills — a player who started numerous games for UH, a real high energy guy, but he would never run out his sprints. I’m not going to name names, but he’s been criticized for his play, and I’m not surprised because of it. I mean, he works hard (he’s been mentioned among those training already), and he did have to deal with some nagging injuries, but he didn’t put it in 100%. I think you see a lot of people putting 80% in, and that’s not going to cut it.

Interesting tidbit out of Miami about why the Dolphins fired their OL coach after his first season with the team. Hearing this, I can imagine how frustrated Samson must have been this season, especially with the criticism he took this season while he was praised by the press and fans when he had a different OL coach last year.

Even before his firing as Dolphins offensive line coach, there were player grumblings about Mike Maser’s abrasive approach and penchant for yelling. One player said he improved under Maser, but Maser could make him feel like he couldn’t do anything right.

Reading and watching some of the Tadd highlights at the Sony Open it’s easy to see that Tadd is really loose and relaxed on the course. One columnists said he walked up to a 12 foot putt yesterday, looked around at the gallery for any takers of his $50 bet saying he wouldn’t miss the putt. He smiled and calmly made the putt. With a 1252 pm tee off this afternoon Tadd’s quest for not only having his name written in the PGA record book as the youngest golfer ever to win a tour event should he win today, but also allowing the public to see first hand the beginnings of a sport’s legend and hometown hero. This can happen, truly. And as I wrote yesterday where I jokingly channeled all bad luck to his competitors, like bad winds, black clouds and bad bounces- today no joking around-nope. Today no horsing around. Today my most intensified channeling of all time for I will be wishing all the bad luck to all of his competitors, like lip outs, bad rolls, drives that go out of bounds, drives in the sand traps-that sort of things. So good luck Tadd. I’ll be watching…err…channeling.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Pretty chilly this morning in Kailua. Watching the first episode of CSI.

Following the progress of 3 co-workers in the HURT 100-mile race. 1 guy finished the 100K @ 3:15am and stopped. The other 2 guys are still on the course somewhere in their 4th loop. So far, 4 have finished all 100 miles and 17 have finished 100K. Good luck to all still out on the course. They have till 6pm to finish.

Sure wish we had a point guard like the other team. ours do not shoot the ball the the players show that they do not know where to be on the court as you see two players in the same area at a given time. And what is the system that runs down the clock so much that the bb players have to take a desperate shot at the last second. This is the first time I see our team players just can’t shoot the medium and long shorts with the required percentage to be in the game. Goinkg to be a long season.

    Momo,

Not recruiting a true point guard is all Coach Nash’s fault. Hiram Thompson is not the answer to the problems on the court. He wasn’t even that good coming out of high school when he was at Oak Ridge High in Sac Town. I know I used to recruit his high school and watch his games his Senior Year. Granted he is a decent ball-handler and can see the floor a little better than Nitoto…maybe, but asking him to be the savior is making me laugh! Coach Nash needs to get out of his set ways with that offense. A D1 team that looks clueless trying to break a simple zone is ridiculous. The players look lost in the sauce, Coach Nash has the deer in the headlights look as if he is clueless himself when I see him on the sidelines. No adjustments, no different play-calling, seems by some miracle if he keeps running the same play over and over sooner or later it’s going to work??? Well ahem, it’s been 17 games Coach, how bout sooner or later you get your ish together!!!

    Opinion of last night’s game:

I know the players are playing within a system which calls for ——— what?

All I could see was the outer perimeter “wheeling” or passing the ball amongst the guards and forwards, but very little if no penetration of the 2/3 zone and very little movement by the forwards/center to for inside movement and shots. Lot of standing around. Is this what Coach Nash wants? Is this the modified system from Riley Wallace?

Not very exciting to watch. All San Jose did was “constrict” their zone and UH could not pass the ball inside. Lots of wasting the clock.

Auwe, hope things turn around for the team.
