UH strength coach Tommy Heffernan has pushed players to the physical brink with his strenuous conditioning program. Today, once again, it is Heffernan’s turn to be tested.

Heffernan will be leading the 40-mile walk from Diamond Head to  Hauula District Park to raise money for his daughter’s education at the Variety School and raise awareness about Hawaii children with special needs.

If you wish to contribute or participate in the walk, please go to this link: Hilina‘i’s Walk.

The Big East is making a “financial commitment” to help Boise State get into the Big West.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/60647/3-point-shot-draft-disappointment

To be invited, Boise needs eight of the ten Big West members to vote in favor. As of yesterday there were reports of four schools in favor and one abstaining (supposedly UC Davis has an acting AD who won’t support any changes to the status quo). I’m guessing Hawaii is opposed. Will the money be enough to sway the remaining four schools in Boise’s favor? The clock is ticking…

Another JC transfer…. Wow….. Lots to brag about… We need more exposure on the mainland, JC transfers, while great, only lead to being a JC WAC football team…..

The “MeTV” channel has become one of my favorite channels. Lots of the older shows from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.

Too bad it is a premium channel in Hawai’i. At least it was last year.

  18. bigislandkurt June 29, 2012 5:38 am

Now now now (finger wagging) Stephany Lee! A rule is a rule! Albeit a BS rule in this day and age. A rule is a rule. No Olympics for you. You should have known better! (still wagging my finger!) Now now now! Now now now!

I can’t believe that in this day and age, we still penalize athletes for smoking cannibus BUT allow alcohol, pain medication, and other highly harmful items because they are “legal.”

Society, more notably–the sporting world– still has a long way to go. I guess not all athletes can be as fortunate as NBA players.

    BIK

    Welcome Michael.

Good luck to Coach Podlewski and his family.

  29. Stephen Tsai June 29, 2012 7:00 am

Boise has only itself to blame for its current mess.

Boise was the one that contributed to the demise of the WAC by deciding to leave for the MWC. And if it felt the WAC was so inadequate, it shouldn’t have tried to place its non-football sports there.

And for all of the talk of its 100-percent summer participation, it now is appealing the nine lost scholarships for breaking summer rules.

MeTV is free over the air channel 4.2.

  32. RedZone June 29, 2012 7:08 am

Big East should just take all of Boise’s sports. Or not.

  33. Stephen Tsai June 29, 2012 7:09 am

In the 1960s, we used to call MeTV just TV.

  34. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 7:24 am

Wafan: what’s a MONGOLIAN BBQ? To me, a BBQ is a BBQ is a BBQ. Lol

  35. Wes'side Warrior June 29, 2012 7:27 am

Yeah, RedZone brings up an interesting suggestion. IF the Big East is so eager to help Boise offset it’s finances by donating to whatever conference takes Boise Olympic sports, why don’t they take ALL of Boise, and let them donkeys feel the travel burn. I think ALL votes should be cast against Boise, from whatever conference door(s) they knock on.

  36. Wes'side Warrior June 29, 2012 7:48 am

I miss those old variety shows… Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Ed Sullivan, etc. Glad that my wife has found several Korean variety tv shows to watch. I also used to get a kick out of the Japanese variety shows. And their commercials are some of the best and most creative I’ve ever seen.

Wow! Quite a few schools chasing after him too.

Okay, Al… how about Donny and Marie, or Carol Burnett? Sonny & Cher? HeeHaw? And a great musical one that I still see on occasion… Lawrence Welk!

In Korea, a buddy of ours used to get Benny Hill tapes sent to him by his wife. Those were hilarious too.

  44. jm2375 June 29, 2012 8:14 am

ST – I didn’t notice it yesterday, but there’s a typo in the story about Vern.

He was named the ILH’s coach of the year in 2012.

    Shouldn’t it be 2010?

  45. A-joe June 29, 2012 8:18 am

    39-40 Das one big braddah.

    43. ww- first time I saw Benny Hill was in ’80 at my brother’s apartment in San Diego. Two years later his shows started showing up on PBS in the islands. Fricken hilarious!!

    Viva la difference!

  48. tommui June 29, 2012 8:30 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Gee, world is coming to an end – the Mayans may be right – but when AL posts at a reasonable hour (7:30ish) instead of at the witching hour, you know something is going to be different.

    # 34 GIGI – should let WAFAN answer your question but since I”m up and around …

Mongolian barbeque – first came across it on a trip. It is somewhat akin to the arrangement that you have at Camillia. You take your meats (chicken, pork, beef, lamb), the vegetables and then you add your various sauces – soy, ginger water, etc etc, and take it to the chef.

There is a big stove of sorts, somewhat like an up-side-down wok where he will stir-fly your selection.

There were a couple of them in Honolulu but afraid I have not been to one in years.

    Was good stuff though!

    Jonathan Winters

    Flip Wilson

    King Family

    Ed Sullivan

  50. Old Diver June 29, 2012 8:33 am

I wouldn’t take Boise unless they play all of their games on the road. Why should our athletes miss more class time to accommodate Boise State. Did I mention the $100 million escrow fund that will be used to pay each school $1 million dollars a year for ten years regardless of when Boise State flies the coop. Take it or leave it.

  51. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 8:34 am

Kekoa and Tom: if it is STIR FRY then why call if a BBQ? Lol.

  52. tommui June 29, 2012 8:35 am

The stove is a cylinder-like with fire coming out on the sides- can get pretty hot in there – hence it is seen by you outside the window – like watching the cooking at Alan Wong but having the stove area enclosed.

There were a couple of them in Honolulu but afraid I have not been to one in years.

    Was good stuff though!

  53. Kekoa June 29, 2012 8:36 am

Right you are Judge!…and btw, they also feature it at the ‘O’ club at the Kaneohe Marine Base. Col. A-house can take his neighbor for a thorough de-briefing.

  54. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 8:37 am

For July 4, I am thinking of grilling on our gas grill. I found a recipe for shish ka bob. Never made it before.

First, I gotta find metal skewers at Kmart or Target. Isn’t it dangerous to use wooden skewers? Might catch on fire.

  55. tommui June 29, 2012 8:39 am

Sorry – duplicate posting (#53, #52) but it is a barbeque because it is on top of a barbeque like stove. (usually wood fired).

The cook may stir it around but I guess it is like people at the barbeque pit flipping the meat, vegetables etc around whereas stir-fly usually would mean using a conventional electric or gas stove.

  56. papajoe2 June 29, 2012 8:54 am

They’re now saying the Mayan’s prediction might have been misinterpreted, which means there will be a UH softball season in 2013.

  60. Kekoa June 29, 2012 9:01 am

Ok Gigi…now you’ve done it! My Mongolian friends are calling to complain that you dissed their BBQ.

They told me I can bring hubby, but leave you home.

  61. Stephen Tsai June 29, 2012 9:02 am

Mongolia has a beef with Gigi?

  62. jimmy the lock June 29, 2012 9:03 am

That is funny. Metal pots and pans, metal grills, metal skewers, everything taste like metal. lol

    Welcome, welcome recruits!

hahaha! You folks crack me up. Totally unexpected repartee.

    Mongolians do well in sumo.

  65. Wes'side Warrior June 29, 2012 9:08 am

Re: “BBQ”… I’m guessing it’s similar to asking “what is Indian Curry? Curry is curry, is curry.” Have you tried that Himalayan Kitchen restaurant? That curry is not even close to the curry I was brought up with. It’s very… um… different. Just saying that we use descriptive terms such as “BBQ” quite loosely. And, our idea of a certain dish or category of food may be far different from how others use it.

Chopsueyboy… Flip Wilson? That was another good fun, crazy show! Smothers Brothers seemed to fight too much… at least for our “young” eyes.

Come to think of it…. “BS” U is not really good initials, huh?

  66. A-House June 29, 2012 9:10 am

Another student athlete finds his way home!

    Jus great! luv it!!!!!!!!!

  67. Wes'side Warrior June 29, 2012 9:11 am

Gigi… you can soak wooden skewers to keep them from burning. When we used them, we soaked them in room temperature water for about half hour. Clean up is easy… when pau, just throw ’em in da fire!

  68. al June 29, 2012 9:12 am

i met donny and marie while filming their movie “going coconuts”. the showroom that was staged was the one that i ran back in ’78.

  69. Wes'side Warrior June 29, 2012 9:14 am

Lucky buggah! Marie was a cutie back then!

  71. al June 29, 2012 9:22 am

the military bases serve a mongolian bbq at the various clubs. it used to be very popular. but, hey, its not a bbq guys. like tom describes its a stir fry not a bbq.

  72. al June 29, 2012 9:25 am

    okay…my last mongolian issue.

    what is a mongolian?

    chinese or korean or russian?

    perhaos a runaway japanese?

and yah, a lot of the sumotori were mongolian, but, didn’t they come from korea?

  73. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 9:26 am

Mongolia: niece traveled alone thru there. People did not know what or where Hawaii was. So niece’s mom mailed her postcards and she showed it to the people. Awesome! They were so impressed.

  74. al June 29, 2012 9:26 am

ww…yah nice kids. they were teenie boppers back then.

    only drink 7 up.

  75. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 9:28 am

WW – thanks for the info. Now, debating whether to buy metal or wooden skewers. What about splinters in the food?

  76. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 9:34 am

Kekoa: if you want to take me and hubby to a Mongolian BBQ, we’re game. In fact, we will pay for the meal and treat you and Diane, too.

  77. Wes'side Warrior June 29, 2012 9:41 am

Gigi… never had problems with splinters. We’ve got metal skewers too. They really get hot. Compared to the wooden ones, they take far longer to cool down to the point when you can handle them. Some guests like to dig into the food right off of the grill, while others display uneasy patience waiting for them to cool down. So, we stick with the wooden ones now. Just don’t reuse them, as one neighbor suggested! (Only time they are reused is when the kids have the marshmallows going.)

  78. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 9:44 am

WW: OK, will opt for the wooden skewers, then. I didn’t know the metal ones would be too hot to handle. Good to know this.

  79. mctruck June 29, 2012 9:48 am

All this talk bout mongolia..getting me hungry fo kim chee la dat.

  81. Ipu Man June 29, 2012 9:49 am

That’s why they are so “hungry”…

  82. Ipu Man June 29, 2012 9:50 am

    They look ono…and cheap.

    UGH!!

  84. Hilo Moon June 29, 2012 9:54 am

Don’t forget the Carol Burnett Show … tops in comedy, song, and dance. Watching comedic genius Tim Conway “cracking up” both cast and audience, especially Harvey Korman, would make me laugh till it hurt! One of the funniest scenes in tv history has to be the time Conway played a dentist who accidentally gives himself a novocaine shot and then tries to work on Korman. What makes it funnier is that Korman tries to stay in character, but fails miserably because of Conway’s antics.

I know, off topic, but I laugh just thinking about that scene and had to share.

    Good morning everyone!

Had a Mongolian BBQ a few times in Guam on Anderson AFB. It was exactly as tommui described in #52. Only difference is the stove was outside and we could stand next to it while waiting…so a BBQ??? Unusual shape grill. I agree it is conceptually of stir-fry of sorts and great when you are far from home.

    gigi — no splinters 😆

Many buffets in Vegas have that type of service at their Asian sections. Usually referred to as “stir-fry”

There are metal skewers made with heavy gauge wire that work amazingly well by eliminating the problem of unusable grill space caused by long, straight skewers. Just string up your chunks and wind things around on the grill in all the empty spaces.

  104. al June 29, 2012 10:43 am

we used to serve filet mignon, potatoes, assorted whole fresh garden veg, en flambe and would parade it around the room.

carve it for the guests with all the fanfare. that flaming sword was a hit back then. sort of liked a giant kabob.

  105. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 10:44 am

Yup. Circular iron griddle about 3′ across. Really a stir-fry in the round. Really need to be careful when mixing the sauce.

Went to one down in Corvallis after the OSU game, too.

Okay, when is the evening cc going to be scheduled?

    YUM!

  112. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 11:54 am

I’m thinking of a typical gas BBQ grill like you buy at the outdoor stores.

Here’s a restaurant that I visited in Reno. It’s called Genghis Grill and is a franchise that started in Lubbock, Texas and expanded. It was pretty good. You can buy single serving signature dishes or you can go Tsaiko and get the all-you-can-eat!

    http://www.genghisgrill.com/index.php

Unfortunately, Genghis Grill has yet to conquer Hawaii. So, if you ever find yourself near a GG location, I recommend trying it.

No news about BSU’s situation as of yet?

lakesidegt– I went to the old Lin’s location too since it is just down Liliha for me. Nice Day dim sum restaurant. I would rely on Al or tommui to say where the good char siu and roast pork is now, besides Fong’s.

The Nice Day roast port is fairly comparable to the old Lin’s. I buy char siu elsewhere though.

  139. tommui June 29, 2012 3:18 pm

Per Google, there is a Mongolian bbq on Jasmine Street – Kaimuki. I don’t know how current the information is.

I remember there was one down in the Chinatown Plaza and he moved it later to a site across from the Convention Center and then to Waikiki (or vice versa) but I only went to the one in the Chinatown Plaza. My kids really liked it – but of course that was about 20-years ago!

  140. gigi-hawaii June 29, 2012 3:24 pm

Tom: when I told hubby about Mongolian BBQ today, he reminded me we went to the one in the Cultural Plaza many years ago. I don’t quite remember what it looked like. Nor do I remember how the food tasted.

  141. koakane June 29, 2012 3:39 pm

  142. SteveM June 29, 2012 3:42 pm

gigi — since you select the ingredients, quantity, and sauce(s) you place in your dish prior to being cooked, the taste can vary greatly. I suppose one could only judge the quality and variety of the ingredients. The taste is literally in your hands. 🙂

  143. koakane June 29, 2012 3:42 pm

    E kala mai Gigi.

Just returned from my cousin’s funeral up at Punchbowl. The usual reception gathering followed, with a wild assortment of ethnic grinds.

Yes, I will be open to planning a Thursday for the stir fry dinner formerly known as a Mongolian BBQ. It may be easier to stop by your hale and pick you up. That way you won’t have to do the ‘Perp Walk’thru the security check point, as they strip search you.

Hep shots A & B? Ouch! They are the original pain-in-the-a$$ shots. Try not to sit down to quickly.

the military clubs had mongolian bbq nights out of desperation since none had been known to have hired a top chef.

for some clubs, it killed them when in the mid ’90’s they then had to turn a profit to remain open. the mongolian bbq concept was that they charged you by the ounce for what you loaded your bowl with. they didn’t have the wherewithal to charge a fee for the rice, beverages, and labor costs let alone know what to actually charge.

Georgia tailback, Isaiah “Crowell, was arrested at a vehicle checkpoint on the Georgia campus at around 2:20 a.m., according to Athens-Clarke Police Department spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow. Among the charges he faces are carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon on school property. He was dismissed from the team Friday by coach Mark Richt. As a freshman in 2011, Crowell led Georgia with 850 yards rushing. Crowell, 19, came to UGA in 2011 as the top-rated running back prospect in the country out of Carver High School in Columbus, Ga.”

to Mike Cherry, on 6pm news…

  171. Ipu Man June 29, 2012 6:08 pm

  179. Kekoa June 29, 2012 6:59 pm

SteveM ~ I used a propane stove to warm my King crab legs at cabana ‘A’ once during the 2008 season. Prior to that, I believe Koakane was the 1st wen he used his to grill some Kalding.

Later, during the 2010 season, NSF came to Pavillion #5 with his Thunderstick gas flame thrower. It was used to light the charcoal in his x-Large BBQ grill. He could stand across the street and light his grill, our grill and all the people sitting at the first row of tables.

Therefore my guess would be Koakane…or maybe…
