First practice is this afternoon

After a long, long offseason, Norm Chow’s fourth UH training camp opens this afternoon.

Three observations:

> Strength/conditioning coach Gary Beemer upped the cardio activities, increasing the number of gassers this summer. The Warriors appear to be more fit exiting the nine-week program than in past summers.

> With so many leaders — quarterbacks Max Wittek and Ikaika Woolsey; receivers Marcus Kemp and Quinton Pedroza; running back Diocemy Saint Juste; linebackers Simon Poti, Lance Williams, and Julian Gener; and defensive backs Trayvon Henderson and Marrell Jackson, and so forth — the players-only, unsupervised workouts were the most organized in years. That should help when drills begin.

> Chow spent the first three years developing a culture. This year, the trust factor is utilized. Chow is permitting seniors and married players the option of spending nights at home this camp. With the hectic schedule and responsibilities, some opted to stay in the dorms.

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
    First?

  2. ML Warrior August 5, 2015 8:51 am

My son looks to be in the best shape of his career, as does the rest of the team.
Thanks for all the great pictures ST.

Norm Chow’s radio interview on the BC Show this morning was interesting. He picked Dylan Collie as the most promising newcomer entering fall practice. Injuries are a part of football, so he confirmed the lack of depth on the DL is an area of concern. I would add the lack of depth on the OL as well. Coach Chow sounds to be is a much more mature head coach. So yes, things are much better in his 4th season.

  4. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 9:19 am

Does Hawaii coaching staff have any say when it comes to uniforms or is it strictly Under Armour?

Not sure who does marketing for them but this dark forest green looking jersey needs to go. I know it’s not a huge factor but kind of hard to sell merchandise when apparel isn’t very appealing and team isn’t winning. People like bright, flashy, clean items. Either go with a better looking green or back to black jerseys.

  5. ALLAN August 5, 2015 9:21 am

lawaia et al: GOOD MEMORIES; I THINK HE HAD A DEGREE IN ENGLISH.

  6. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 9:23 am

    3. Mature? I would hope after all these years of coaching we have a mature coach. Competent and ability to connect with 18-23 year olds is the concern. Ability to not want to micro manage every coach is a concern. Sometimes people who like having too much control is a bad thing. Not sure Chow has learned that. He hasn’t shown he is willing to adjust and sell or market his program. Hasn’t made effort to build a connection with the fan base. Hasn’t shown the desire to want to embrace technology and use social media as a tool to attract talent to Hawaii.

  7. What??? August 5, 2015 9:46 am

Jeezy IMHO Chow should delegate the responsibilities of embracing technology and using social media and not worry about those kinds of issues 😉 .

  8. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 9:50 am

Yeah because coaches like this don’t use social media.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid August 5, 2015 10:03 am

Great article about McClam in today’s SA. Mahalo Stephen. How many years will McClam have to play?

  10. What??? August 5, 2015 10:15 am

Jeezy he doesn’t have to do it himself, someone can do the tweets for him.

  11. A-House August 5, 2015 10:21 am

believe we all understand that there will be injuries to many

however, IMHO, it’s disheartening to hear coaching staff say that past performance was largely the byproduct of injuries to “key players”

IMHO, the coach, whomever they may be failed to train all his players and therefore compounded the results when key personnel are hurt

some say that it’s the teachers fault that students fail – I’m reminded of the movie, Mr. Holland’s Opera, wherein the music teacher was asked to “train” a football player in music to make him eligible for football – he tried many ways, but finally found a way for the student to learn how to play the large drum – in a scene, coach tells Mr. Holland that student fails because teacher failed to teach

believe this also applies to UH football coaching staff

  12. Maddog50 August 5, 2015 10:24 am

I like the uniforms and the green. I own tons of it as do many of my friends and family

  13. islandman August 5, 2015 10:26 am

June Jones called all the offensive plays for UH and must be for SMU too, i think. So some coaches can handle it like that, even if they are the HC, some can’t.

  14. jimmy the lock August 5, 2015 10:35 am

Coach Chow is so busy that he can’t tweet? I don’t know his schedule so maybe he is too busy.

Really? It’s an issue to embrace technology? He should get with the times and keep up.

Blog is starting off with a bang, Happy Hump Day!

  15. islandman August 5, 2015 10:38 am

    3. H-Man– Was it Norm or Stephen or both who mentioned Collie ? I only heard part of Stephen’s interview today on the Curran show but heard all of Norm’s. ST mentioned Collie and Paul Harris.

  16. jimmy the lock August 5, 2015 10:41 am

There are levels of abilities that you can’t teach.

I can’t teach you to run a 9.6 second 100m dash, but I’ll teach you to try your hardest. Just a phrase, not really going to teach you. 😆

  17. Huh? August 5, 2015 10:54 am

    Mr. Holland’s Opus

  18. SteveM August 5, 2015 10:56 am

    Good morning everyone!

In accommodations, this year’s camp is certainly different than in previous years. Better? Time will tell.

  19. cocobean August 5, 2015 11:04 am

I guess I’m set for the season. Just got my parking pass(es). This year they printed a pass for each individual game which I think is an improvement over having one pass for all the games.

  20. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2015 11:20 am

    DPK
McClam has two seasons of eligibility

  21. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2015 11:21 am

I love the excitement of opening day. Of course, by the ninth practice it’ll be me, Kekaula and a homeless guy standing by ourselves and whining: Why is it so humid?

  22. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 11:49 am

    10. Agree. He needs to know who to follow though. Which is pretty easy.

  23. Jon August 5, 2015 11:59 am

Where can we see the new uniforms?

  24. Warbow August 5, 2015 12:17 pm

Jon…. I believe someone leaked it on instagram.

  25. islandman August 5, 2015 12:20 pm

Someone said this is the new uniform, don’t know if it’s true :

  26. oneseason August 5, 2015 12:34 pm

Might be Coach Chow having some fun like UW’s coach … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNmeIiRyap4

  27. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 12:34 pm

Pretty below average uniforms.. Little better than last year but bad compared to rest of college football.

How does Under Armour design something nice like Maryland
    http://www.nicekicks.com/files/2012/08/Under-Armour-Unveils-New-Maryland-Football-Uniforms.jpg

Then come up with something so bland and dull for Hawaii. You would think Under Armour would go for something vibrant and flashy.

  28. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 12:38 pm

    25. Fun and Norm Chow in same sentence??? No chance. lol. Kids can’t even have their hair the way they want.

  29. oneseason August 5, 2015 12:46 pm

    27. Perhaps that was a bit of a stretch :)

  30. letsgowarriors August 5, 2015 1:03 pm

looks like Paul Harris took down the pic of the new uni. grandpa norm was probably mad and yelled at him

  31. kahuna August 5, 2015 2:13 pm

Maybe UA will give us flash and glam once we start winning. As of now, we are a lowly football team and we cannot expect UA to make top of the line stuff for us.

Like anything in life…UH have to earn it. Once UH start to win and earn some respect nationwide, then maybe UA will spend time and money on us. Right now we a nobody and nobodies cannot be expecting top of the line anything.

  32. NotNasti August 5, 2015 3:52 pm

    Re: New Uniforms.
There’s only so much you can do with green uniforms. That’s why JJ went black, silver, etc. I thought the red, white and blue unis a few years ago were pretty sick. Not that impressed with Maryland’s new unis.

  33. Abunai August 5, 2015 4:31 pm

    #26 Jeezy33

Same as why does Oregon have so many uniforms and accessories…. The owner of UA is a graduate of Maryland that played football back in the mid 90’s….

  34. jm2375 August 5, 2015 4:59 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

First practice of the season! Football is in the air!

NotNasti – #33 – one of the problems with the Twerp’s uniforms is the butt-ugly Maryland state seal they insist on using.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  35. Otto August 5, 2015 5:05 pm

UH Football does use twitter… I just viewed some of the tweets on UH’s page on Bleacher Report dot com. Has pics of Kahu Kordell giving a blessing at today’s practice and other pics.

  36. Andrew August 5, 2015 5:26 pm

Really, complaining about uniforms? Are we running out of things to complain about?

  37. cappie the dog August 5, 2015 5:32 pm

For one day, Steven Wright upstaged Kolten Wong.

Against the Yankees, are you kidding me?

On national television, with the Yankees in first place.

It’s so great that Wong and Wright are situated in baseball-centric cities. That they are succeeding is a great testament of hard work and perseverance, especially Wright, a seemingly journeyman minor leaguer.

Kirby Yates pitches for the Rays. Does anybody notice?

Jonathan Hee, David Freitas, Vinnie Catricala, and Breland Almadova, at least, made it to spring training.

Matt Cooper and Blair Walters are having solid years.

Mike Trapasso’s won-loss record is disappointing, but the man can recruit.

  38. cappie the dog August 5, 2015 5:37 pm

    Joey Vierra deserved his shot.

    Marge Schott was a racist.

  39. jeezy33 August 5, 2015 6:39 pm

    32. Not asking for multiple sets of uniforms. It’s their brand being marketed. Might as well make 1 nice set of home uniforms and 1 nice set of road. Can mix and match colors if they want but all white uniforms on the road isn’t asking for a lot. White helmets look way better than the ones we have now. Don’t think anyone has liked the tribal print UA has designed so far.

  40. ALLAN August 5, 2015 9:36 pm

THE HAWAIIAN/TAPA DESIGN IS DISTINCTIVE; IT ONLY IDENTIFIES WITH POLYNESIA’S TEAM. NO OTHER TEAM IN U.S. CAN LOGICALLY COORDINATE IT INTO THEIR UNIFORMS.

  41. hitman August 5, 2015 10:00 pm

aloha everyone !! nice story ST !!

  42. Abunai August 5, 2015 10:22 pm

    #38 Jeezy33

I understand about 1 nice uniform home and 1 for away. But honestly. Why will you make everyone else better then your own. Oregon I must say have nice combos of uniforms then anyone else Nike makes for. Why? Because that’s the home of the owner. Same as UA. Maryland has a lot of uniforms also and as much as people may not like them. The kids do because it’s different. But they are getting better in combining different things into the uniforms.

  43. cappie the dog August 5, 2015 10:29 pm

Concerning the uniforms and helmets, I’d like to quote Cameron Crowe from the greatest film of the 21st century, 2000’s Almost Famous.

Russell Hammond(Billy Crudup), lead guitarist of the fictitious rock band Stillwater says to William Miller(Patrick Fugit), a teen journalist for Rolling Stone(Crowe’s stand-in): “Just make us look cool.”

I think the new helmets and uniforms make the players look cool.

  44. Inyoface August 6, 2015 4:48 am

Hoping on a speedy recovery for Brenden Urban.

  45. shadow August 6, 2015 6:40 am

It seems some don’t know, but budget woes aside, UH still outfits their team w/ equipment & unis on par w/ any team in the country.

Douglas, Riddell, Schutt, Under Armour, etc. are “top of the line” in the football industry.

Maryland’s outfits??? To each his own, but I’d take UH’s thank you! (And especially, our dark green metallic helmets over stock white.)

  46. boolakanaka August 6, 2015 7:41 am

Too bad Arakawas is not still open, we could some good color combos going and maybe even one sponsor from lex brodies…wink.

Back in the day, going to Arakawas to buy a new glove or baseball shoes was the height of all things civilized for me. Plus it meant we was going to Highway Inn afterwards…..and pass the old x rated theater…..only the best day ever for an eleven year old.

  47. jeezy33 August 6, 2015 7:53 am
