Final adjustments

The Warriors conducted their final full practice this morning in preparation for  Saturday’s season opener against Colorado.

The Warriors have a closed walk-through scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, after which they will check into a hotel for a night of meetings.

Colorado arrives today, and is scheduled to have a light practice this afternoon. The Buffaloes will have a walk-through tomorrow morning.

From today’s practice:

• Andrew Faaumu will open the game as the right guard. After that, Faaumu and Chauncy Winchester-Makainai will alternate.

• Long-snapper Luke Ingram’s left arm is no longer in a sling. He expects to play.

• The Warriors spent about 15 minutes discussing where everyone will stand during the game and sideline etiquette. It’s another attention to detail that often gets overlooked.

As reported yesterday, linebacker Darryl McBride was placed on scholarship.

There are two types of scholarships that may be awarded to walk-ons: 1) Initials and 2) general. The latter can only be given after a player has been in the program for two years. Each team is limited to 25 initial scholarships each year. The Warriors are holding an initial scholarship for Penitito Faalologo, who signed a letter of intent in February. Because of a death in the family, Faalologo had to delay enrolling at UH until January.

The Warriors took Faalologo’s scholarship and gave it to McBride. Because it is considered an initial scholarship, McBride counts toward the 2011 recruiting class. When Faalologo joins in January, he will receive a scholarship that will count toward the 2012 recruiting class.

mcbride and jackson, his teammate from mendocino cc, are both deserving of a scholie. hard work surely pays off in these instances.

    9 inches.

that’s difference between darius bright’s length compared to allen sampson.

    0 inches.

that’s the difference between darius bright’s and allen sampson’s size of heart.

once sampson settles in, he will become a playmaker. i look for him to bust at least one come saturday. those rookie corners for colorado will make at least one mistake and sampson will make them pay for it.

OK, top ten! Hi Al and DPK! Good morning to all the Tsaikos, still awake, and soon to wake!

    Go Warriors! Pulehu da Buffalos!

  10. Midnight September 1, 2011 1:34 am

I am gonna miss you guys in Vegas, as well as the others who will not be going! But that is OK . I figure Lizkauai cheering will make up for at least half of the missing Tsaikos. Barbara and I, and the others attending will try to make up for the other half!

Hey, Wes’side Warrior. I hope your wife can maybe arrange a Sunday switch with her fellow workers so you all can attend in Vegas as originally planned.

Go Warriors! Pulehu’d Buffalo taste good, you know!

Got to go for my morning walk now! Aloha all! Have a good day!

    Morning everyone!

I don’t know about you guys, but every time we get right up to the start of the season, I get butterflies! So excited, cannot wait!

    Let’s go, Warriors!!!

  17. Wes'side Warrior September 1, 2011 2:58 am

Midnight, I wish! Everyone in the office is expected to show up for work… no switching allowed. Everyone must work every even-numbered Sunday, no excuses. I was hoping we’d be able to play the “it was planned and paid for from last year, as our anniversary celebration”, but it didn’t work. Too many people want this job. And in this economy, we can’t go back to a regular retail sales paycheck.

Hope you guys all have fun! Looking forward to the pictures! I got a chance to meet some Tsaikos on two previous trips back home. There will be more opportunities. And, if what we’re planning and working on pans out, we may free up time for ourselves in the future!

Virginia Tech has long been rumored to be the SEC’s choice for their 14th team to go along with Texas A&M. Virginia Tech not only is denying they are interested, their President’s spokesman responded in a way that I’ve never seen a University President’s office respond before.

“Total poppycock. How many times do we have to say it? If one of these rumor mongers, would be willing to cite their ‘multiple sources,’ it might lend some credence. Frankly, we’re tired of other people telling us what our future is.

“We are not interested. Nothing has changed. My president will not dignify wild speculation. Our last statement [from Aug. 12] still stands. Bottom line: this is not on our radar screen.”

It is interesting that Notre Dame is involved with the talks between the Big 12 and BYU. If BYU joins the Big 12 I hope that they would be able to still schedule UH every year–BYU would go from having 12/13 openings every year to having 3/4 and they have nonconference games that seem to be set with Utah, Utah State, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, etc.

A BYU source said the talks have included the school’s desire to utilize its own television network, BYUtv, in a BCS automatic-qualifying conference much as it plans to this year. The talks have also included ESPN officials and even some input from Notre Dame representatives, whom BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe has referred to as “partners” in the past year.

Great news about Daryl McBride! Congrats to him; he seems like an impact player and I hope to see him on the field on Saturday. Also hope to see Sterling in action, but only after Joey Iosefa decimates the Buffs. I believe he’ll be one of many Warriors’ names they’ll be mumbling about on that quiet plane ride home.

Eagle Air is a novice looking to be free to stroll all the exhibitions “Life is to learn not to get …”I like this sentence, very healthy outlook on life: You do not get a satisfactory cause; is learned How closer to happiness. You do not get the victory; is to learn how to avoid failure. You do not get the final result you want; that things will not be satisfactory to learn …

so everytime dunnachie punts one of his boomers, we could all chant “oi, oi, oi” while the football is in flight. thats a good 5.5 seconds that could, after awhile drive the returner to another level of jitters.

NBC Sports says that Oklahoma will be moving to the Pac-12 within days, dragging along Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas Tech. That would make it the Pac-16 and create a monster of a conference in the West. I hope that they are not correct about this.

“probably before the calendar turns to October… [y]our new Pac-16 members: Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.”

“The Longhorn Network gets folded into the Pac-16 as a downsized regional network, joining the six regional networks that already exist within the conference,” Bohls writes.

61-year-old man may become the oldest-ever college football player. He is a kicker.

Faulkner University officials say that after clearing up a few eligibility concerns, Alan Moore, a former college football player in the 1960s and Vietnam veteran, will take to the field once again this season as the Eagles’ newest team member.

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 8:46 am

    Old Diver,

Doesn’t do anything to the MWC. The B12 implodes and maybe we get to pick up the scraps like a Mizzou and Bayor. If not, they end up with the ACC or Big East it still does zero to the MWC.

Big East would easily take Kstate UK for basketball.

The effects on MWC are picking up 2 B12 leftovers or nothing at all.

In other words BC was kind of… like intimating that why watch a game if it goes by in a blur.

He said he could understand people having a few. But why a lot?

He said it makes more sense to drink after the game. Okay.

Before writing further, I will concede that BC makes good points.

He sounded mystified, though, as to why people over party.

He said he’s seen and heard second hand stories of fans at Aloha Stadium acting belligerent during the Warrior game because of having a few too many. And added the theory that some drinkers are affected even more if exposed to the sun.

He then took a call from one caller to the show that happened to be a volunteer that raises money for their youth group by working at Aloha Stadium during the Warrior football games…selling beer in the stands.

And then another caller, who said that the secret to drinking beer all day is to keep hydrated.

BC’s serious. He advocates in what he believes. Nothing wrong with that.

    I say enjoy. Have fun.

Leave keys at home.Or have a designated driver. Be responsible.

If the game passes by in a blur, so be it. It’s not like there’s going to be a quiz after the game.

Escape. Lose your inhibitions. Go on a wild ride. Root for the home team. Stomp feet and hands exuberantly.

Toast every score, every good play, and have another one. Life happens once.

  74. Old School Dave September 1, 2011 9:04 am

Not that it would never happen, doesn’t hurt to dream, but if UH were to someday be considered for Pac-12 membership, Aloha Stadium would have to become dry and ban the sale of alcohol. Could be wrong, but I think that’s a conference policy.

  75. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 9:07 am

    Old School Dave,

No thats not necessarily true. “Club Level” seating at some PAC12 schools sell alcohol.

Basically one must dish out cash, to dish out more cash to get slammed.

(Only a few pieces to cut and paste since it appears you have to register to read the complete article)

Found this article/blog on WSN originally from Pacific Business News:

The pictures were so clear that one fan sitting in the upper level was heard criticizing a player for wearing too much eye makeup.

The scoreboard is a big improvement over the 17-year-old arena’s original $1.2 million scoreboard that was made up of panels. Some panels didn’t work, so fans couldn’t get a complete picture of what was going on.

But despite the new technology and crystal-clear images, the new scoreboard might be too much of a good thing.

    ….

The screens are huge, bright and constantly flashing something. There’s an ad circle at the bottom of the scoreboard that resembled a Wall Street ticker and was blaring the name of one of the major sponsors.

    ….

The scoreboard itself was awash with flashy ads and commercials, and at times looked like it came straight out of the movie “Blade Runner.” There were ads for banks, insurance companies, a newspaper, airlines, the concession stand, and even a race among cartoon cars for a petroleum company.

    …….

The scoreboard is amazing and likely is one of the best in any college arena in the country. But most fans go to the Stan Sheriff for the event, whether it’s volleyball or basketball, and the scoreboard should enhance our viewing pleasure, not distract from it.

Typical OLD Hawaii mentality here of COMPLAIN… COMPLAIN… COMPLAIN….

Speaking of complaining, how fitting to include that someone commented on a player’s make-up.. 🙄

People talk about Hawaii being too far behind and now we have something that is up-to-date and BAM!!! Something’s wrong with it. People that go to professional sports on the mainland don’t comment on similar scoreboards or don’t seem to have a problem with it. The way the scoreboard features ads is NO different than anywhere else in the REAL WORLD.

For someone that writes in a business-related magazine, this individual should be educated enough to understand that an investment in this technology allows UH athletics to gain more attractive advertising revenue as opposed to simple banners.

This is how advertisement is done in today’s REAL world and this is what companies expect out of their advertisement dollars.

Like it or not, advertisers pay the hefty dollar amounts we cannot or won’t.

Don’t like it??? Get with the times or GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

When the Big 12 disintegrates, the MWC becomes the 6th AQ conference….whooohoooo!!!

Of course the BCS will then change the next set of rules to state that they will only require 5 AQ conferences.

    Good morning gang…Woo Hoo….almost there…..drooling already..

  79. Garret September 1, 2011 9:18 am

    HawaiiMongoose,

I know that the NBC article was relying on Austin American Statesman columnist Kirk Bohls (who I’ve read since I was in Texas in the 80s). However, the Bohls column was one of a series of things (many that I read before he published his column) that could provide some smoke. Oklahoma openly wants to go to the Pac-16 if the Big 12 goes away, and having Oklahoma and Texas A&M move first would provide Texas all the political cover they need to leave the Big 12.

The sad thing for the Big 12 is that they just needed to hold together for 2 years and they would get about $30 mil each for their TV money. Note that their $1+ bil Fox contract is split evenly among all conference members, a sign for what would happen when the Tier 1 TV rights were up for bid.

  80. Garret September 1, 2011 9:20 am

    Darren,

However, under the BCS rules, I don’t think they can change anything major until 2014. If the Big 12 goes away, the MWC will be in the top 6 in the 2010-2013 evaluation period and automatically will get AQ status for 2 years.

  81. Darren September 1, 2011 9:20 am

A year ago, Stoops endorsed the idea of OU joining the then-Pac-10 when that league attempted to expand to 16 members. He confirmed Tuesday that membership in a Pac-16 still excites him. “Think about it,” Stoops said. “A (league) championship game in the Rose Bowl, going to USC to play, the Rose Bowl and playing UCLA (the storied stadium serves as the Bruins’ home field) …” Stoops also still believes if the Sooners eventually head west that it’s vital to take at least three Big 12 teams with them.

    http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/article.aspx?subjectid=202&articleid=20110831_202_B1_NORMAN365879

Other sources have said that the Pac 16 championship game was set to alternate between the Rose Bowl and Cowboy Stadium. From everything that’s been stated in the press, it seems that Oklahoma is the institution with their finger on the trigger.

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

If the Big 12 disintegrates and the Pac-16 is created, we will be in the age of superconferences. The SEC would quickly get to 16, the ACC would probably backfill from the Big East if the SEC poaches their team, the Big 10 will take who they want, and C-USA/Big East/the rest will scramble. There is no way that the fallout wouldn’t reach the MWC.

My best guess is that Kansas/Missouri/Iowa State/KState would go to either the Big East or SEC (maybe Missouri). Baylor may go to C-USA or the MWC if the Big East doesn’t want them.

If C-USA gets dinged, maybe the MWC will get their wish and grab SMU and Houston. If all of the other conferences are at 16 or 12, I think the MWC would go to 12. That would be good for the conference, but significantly devalue the Hawaii Exception.

Anyway, we’ll just see what happens over the next week. BYU, the Big 12, and several other things should be clear by early next week. All I care about is what happens to UH. If Texas/TT/OK/OKST go to the Pac-16, that will be it for Pac-16 expansion and UH will be shut out.

    Garret,

When/if it happens I will believe it. The superconferences won’t do anything to dramatic to the MWC at worst. Maybe we add a team or 2 but thats it. Other than that its the status quo, we schedule our games to play and the sun rises again.

JD is working on things that will help bring value back to the “Hawaii Exemption” overall. Waiting to see how that pans out.

Also waiting to see what a possible Japan game may open us up to.

4 – Expect To Win It, Late In The Fourth Quarter.

Good morning Tsaikos on this first day of the college football season!

    al,

“Oi! oi! oi!” is a great idea! Imagine the whole stadium rockin’ after a big defensive stop then yelling that before the punt. Yeah.

  96. markazulu September 1, 2011 9:50 am

Hope this fires up the boys an Coach Mack if they see this what a colorado fan said about his game prediction

    “Colorado 41 Hawaii 10

My gut tells me the Buffs will be on fire for this game. As Coach Embree says:”We may not have the best players, but we will have the best team.” I like how we match up on both sides as well as ST. My bet is WE WILL OUT COACH HAWAII with the superb Buff coaching staff. Although we are young at certain positions (kicking and CB), our new team spirit will take over and we will win convincingly. GO BUFFS!”

My Prediction Hawaii 49 Colorado 7

LETS GO WARRIORS! Show up locked an ready to go against this “BCS team”

  97. markazulu September 1, 2011 9:54 am

Some other Colorado fans sounding off

“I expect this team to come out and let out two years of frustration on an unfortunate Hawaii team.”

    “Colorado 31 Hawaii 10

Doug Rippy and the linebackers completely dominate and the d-line blows up Hawaii’s o-line. This is a statement win for the Buffs not because of a quality win (LETS FACE IT, HAWAII BLOWS and CU SHOULD AND WILL COMPLETELY DOMINATE THEM) but because it brings back an attitude and style that we have not seen in a few years.”

    3 words

    Prove Um Wrong!!! Go Warriors

    Cue al or Curt…

  100. markazulu September 1, 2011 9:58 am

    Colorado News Paper I believe

“Last season in Folsom Field, CU racked up 328 of its 452 yards in total offense in the second half. A pair of Buffs – tailbacks Rodney “Speedy” Stewart and Brian Lockridge – each ran for 100-plus yards (Stewart had 106, Lockridge 109).

CU’s 252 ground yards against UH turned out to be a season high – and returning Buffs players believe Embree’s and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s run game will be more physical and potent than the 2010 model.

“We’re more physical up front . . . that’s what this offensive staff has instilled in us,” senior quarterback Tyler Hansen said, adding he believes the fullback and tight end play have improved from a season ago. “It’ll help our defense out by keeping them off the field. That’s what we want . . . if we can control the game and the clock, especially against Hawai’i – they’re an explosive offense with a lot of weapons. If we can keep them off the field, they can’t get points on the sidelines.”

For the past month, said CU senior safety Anthony Perkins, he’s listened to his body tell him how much more physical the offense has become: “This camp compared to last camp, I’ve been a lot more sore after practices. The whole mentality the offense has right now is to come right at you and get after you.

“That definitely changes your mindset on defense because now on top of worrying about what my assignment is, you’re thinking about are they going to come and get after me on this play. You have that in the back of your mind, and as a defensive player the more you have to think about makes things a little less clear. I’m excited for our offense; I think they can have a great year.”

The Buffs’ running output against the Warriors last season proved to be an aberration. CU wound up topping the 200-yard mark only twice more in the final nine games, averaging 137.0 rushing yards for the season. If that number doesn’t improve this season, it won’t be because the ground game was underemphasized.

Offensively, Embree’s philosophy is to use the running game to “throw the first punch.”

“Part of running the football to me is can you implement your will on the other team,” he said. “We’re going to throw the first punch; throwing the first punch means offensively that we’re going to run the ball down their throat. They know what’s coming and they have to stop it. It’s been successful in the past here; I know we can get back to doing it.

“I know we have the right kind of kids in this program that buy into that and understand that mindset. And to have that mindset you have to be a selfless player . . . there are a lot of things that go into running the ball, but to me it’s the ultimate team aspect to say we’re running the ball. It takes all 11 to do that; it’s real important for everybody on this team.”

POINTS, NOT STYLE POINTS: In Embree’s last year as an assistant coach at UCLA, the Bruins averaged almost 40 points and won 10 games. Nice numbers, but he’s really not into them.

“I just want to win; I don’t care about the numbers,” he said. “I don’t care if it’s 3-2. We have to create that culture. I don’t care about style points and all that. I hope I can sit here and be called the worst 5-0 team in the country. I’d rather be that than the best 0-5 team any day.”

ALL BUSINESS, SOME PLEASURE: The Buffs leave early Thursday for Hawai’i, arriving in the islands at mid-afternoon (with the time change). Friday will offer “some down time,” Embree said, but not the beach time some might expect.

“The only beach they’ll see is when they land,” Embree said, adding if it’s beach time the players crave, “they can get married and have a honeymoon trip there . . . this is a business trip.”

ONE BRICK AT A TIME: Several players said their luggage for the Hawai’i trip will include the symbolic bricks Embree presented them when camp opened in August. (See column from 8/6/11; Brooks: This Is Not Just Another Brick In The Wall)

Among Embree’s overriding themes for his coaching debut is restoring the “big-game” bricks in the Dal Ward Athletic Center. “I’ve been fortunate to be part of a lot of bricks that have been put up,” he said, citing CU’s 20-10 upset of No. 3 Nebraska in 1986.

It was the Buffs’ first win against the Cornhuskers in 18 years, and Embree called it “a watershed moment for the program…I want our seniors to have that kind of experience.”

Saturday’s opener presents “an opportunity for us to bring the bricks back . . . it’s a big game because it’s the first game. There’s a lot of reasons this is a very big game. As far as setting a tone for the program, yes and no, it’s big in that manner, but these guys will find out that every game is a big game.”

MAC IS BACK: Actually, two Macs are back. Former CU coach Bill McCartney and Mark McIntosh, who did radio/TV work involving the Buffs during the McCartney Era, will host a weekly program beginning Thursday, Sept. 8 at Pasta Jay’s in Boulder.

The program, called “Coach Mac’s Football Fix and Feast,” features the ex-Buffs coach, McIntosh and his current Mile High Sports radio partner Jimmy “Doog” Doogan talking CU football. The event goes from 6-8 p.m., beginning Sept. 8 and running through Nov. 10. Dinner will be served, with the total cost for the 10 Thursdays set at $250. Only 50 season tickets will be sold in Year 1 of the event. Tickets can be purchased online at Macanddoog.com.

McIntosh said the weekly tickets are transferrable from person to person, meaning any number of Buffs fans can collaborate to purchase the package, then attend whatever Thursday night fits their schedules.

McIntosh bills the event as “sharing inside stories, interviewing special guests and supporting one another to embrace the truth: everything rises and falls with leadership – in football and life!”

He said McCartney will offer his coaching insight on the new Buffs staff, players, CU’s move into the Pac-12 Conference and more.

“’Mac’ knows the Buffs tradition and what Jon Embree and his staff are doing to restore it,” McIntosh said. “I can’t think of anyone better to have dinner with and talk CU football.”

    Some things to ponder:

    1) Last year, at Nevada, Nevada beat California 52-31. I watched that game on ESPN and it was not close.

    2) Last year, at California, California beat Colorado 52-7.

    3) Last year, on the road, Colorado lost 5 games by an average of 45 points per game, including 52 points at Kansas, the worst team in the Big 12.

    4) Last year, Hawaii beat Nevada 27-21 at Aloha Stadium in a great game which could have gone either way. It was to prove the only loss of the year for Nevada.

    5) Last year, Nevada beat Boise St. in overtime, a game I thought that Boise St. would win and should have won had Brotzman made the chip field goal in regulation. It spoiled Boise’s undefeated season, a BCS berth and possibly even playing in the National championship game had Alabama beaten Auburn in the regular season finale. Remember, Alabama was leading either 17-0 or 21-0 before Auburn made a tremendous comeback.

    My point:

Based on these results last year do you believe Hawaii can complete with the Tatonkas? I would say yes.

Would you say that Hawaii has a good chance to win at home? I would say yes.

Would you say that last year’s 31-13 loss at Colorado could have been different? I would say yes. Hawaii led 10-0 at halftime. They could have had 2 more touchdowns in the first half and could have led 24-0 at half. It was still 13-17 late in the late in the 3rd qtr. We just didn’t make the key stop or offensive play to overcome the rally by Colorado.

    Keys for the game:

    For Hawaii:

    1) Hawaii’s offensive line

    2) Red Zone offense

    3) Turnovers

    4) Special teams

    For Colorado:

    1) Rushing Offense

    2) Pass Defense

    3) Turnovers

    4) Special teams

I also think depth will be important in the heat and the humidity. Losing the 2 “Bs”, Brown and Bright hurts, but it can rally the team to work harder. Daily-Lyles and Sampson are very good players and Darryl McBride and Terrance Bell and also play key roles. I believe our Warriors have been waiting for this game for one year for some payback. I also believe in the “Mighty Mo” in his final and Senior year. Like last year at Nevada, it doesn’t have to be close at home against a Pac 10-12 team. After this game, everybody in the country will know the names of Joey Iosefa and John Hardy-Tuliau.

Possibly not good news for Kealoha Pilares. This article in the Gaston Gazette speculates that the Panthers may not be able to hold a roster spot for KP even though he “turned heads in training camp”. His high ankle sprain normally is a 4 to 6 injury. The team may “decide to put him on injured reserve and use this basically as a redshirt season.” Its too bad for Kealoha if this happens in his first season when he was doing so well. The full article is here:

    http://warriorbeat.staradvertiserblogs.com/page/119/?disp=comments

Last month, head coach Greg McMackin announced that quarterback Bryant Moniz and long-snapper Luke Ingram would be placed on scholarship this semester. They had be integral parts to last year’s team.

But those plans will be put on hold until the summer. It was assumed that they would be able to receive mid-year scholarships, using the scholarships vacated by players who graduated in December.

    Makes sense, right?

    Not quite.

Because they have been in the program less than two years — Moniz joined in January 2009, Ingram in August 2009 — and they played during the 2009 season, they would count toward the 2009 recruiting class if they receive scholarships during the 2009-2010 academic year. The Warriors already filled their limit of 25 initial scholarships for the 2009 recruiting class.

(J)J- Latin? We barely spoke Pidgin correctly.

It’s actually a saying that came straight off a 1978 Cap’n Crunch Cereal box viewed with decoder glasses that I got from digging in through the cereal with my dirty hands; made while creating mud cities and driving hotwheels around make believe armies of marbles and Wiliwili seeds underneath my neighbor’s house. Had to buy the cereal from KTA in Hilo. Mizuno up the street too expensive at the time.

  139. Laura September 1, 2011 11:49 am

Pomai, it is good to see people start using their brains, instead of their hearts in predicting the Warrior score. Here is my prediction:

    Warriors 10 Buffaloes 31

  140. Da Punchbowl Kid September 1, 2011 11:54 am

    Pomai –

Yes. Something like that would do nicely, thanks!

  141. Old Diver September 1, 2011 11:55 am

    #140

Laura, we are having fun guessing the score of the game. Why would anyone think we are being serious with our guesses. Most of us understand trying to use your brain to predict the score of a game is as effective as predicting the weather a month from now.

  142. Da Punchbowl Kid September 1, 2011 11:57 am

    And you wonder…

… please address your sausage remarks to KM, he/she will be interested in what you have to say. 😆

  143. AlaWai September 1, 2011 11:58 am

As a long time UH game attendee, I always wondered why the cheerleaders could not get the crowd to cheer in synch like mainland schools. We use to have Rain – Bows. Now Vili does his version. The Wave is is a silent fan event. D – Fense is about the only unison cheer. Even when it calls for noise I would estimate that only 20% do. Give away thunder-sticks and the Grandma’s put them in their bag to take home? I figure its a local thing. Not cool? Unladylike? Make A**? I suggest the Dance team position themselves around the 2nd and 3rd levels with YELL! signs to the crowd involved. What do you think? I’m tired of standing up and imploring my section to make noise.

  144. kev-1 September 1, 2011 11:59 am

I think I can speak for Hawaii’s defense and say that they would be glad to oblige Colorado QB Hansen’s request to get hit.

  145. kev-1 September 1, 2011 12:00 pm

by the way . . . a well informed writer of the Hansen article would have mentioned that Hawaii is the perfect place for that to happen, given Hawaii’s reputation as a hard hitting squad.

I am waiting for the first simultaneous multiple waves. The effect of the sets rolling in. Initiate a wave, wait until it gets to the next section, start another and so on until the first one arrives back at its origin and keep it going.

  155. Derek September 1, 2011 12:26 pm

Remember the names of Laura, Pride, and Warriorsun who feel that Colorado will win on Saturday. The rest of us have confidence in our Warriors that they can get the job done. Why are they so pessimistic? I dunno. But, as the “Stones” said in one of their songs, “you may be right, or you may be wrong.” Or vice a versa. I will go with the Warrior Ohana and have faith in our defense and special teams. I want that feeling back when it was defense, defense, and more defense when Tomey was coaching. Coach Mack is trying to recruit players who are playmakers and who can make big plays. We have some now.

  156. madeinhawaii September 1, 2011 12:26 pm

I hope the Warriors pull all the plugs against CU’s freshmen kickers. If the Warriors can block a couple of kicks, or get really close to it, that might unnerve the kickers and make them lose their rhythm.

  157. madeinhawaii September 1, 2011 12:35 pm

Of course we gotta get them to kick punts and field goal attempts instead of TDs… Then we go after those two new corners..

  158. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 12:37 pm

    #150,

Don’t want to get too carried away or else its just 35,000 people with both hands up in the air all at once.

  159. madeinhawaii September 1, 2011 12:43 pm

I’d like to see the Warriors do a nu huddle offense in the red-zone… 3 downs, back to back.. no huddle, same formation… 3 different plays.

  160. madeinhawaii September 1, 2011 12:43 pm

whoops.. NO huddle.. not nu huddle..

  161. AlaWai September 1, 2011 12:44 pm

The “War…” will play with controlled rage. Mac’s speech will resonate in the locker room. The loss last year was bitter. Moniz will unleash an aerial barrage that will have the buffs on their heals. The O line will rip holes the size of which will “awe” the North and South end zones. Our “D” will hit them so hard they will drop to their knees and fall on their faces like

bison shot between the eyes. The “War…” will tear their hearts out and hand it to each other for a bloody feast and a warcry which will penetrate the Halawa sky. Hawai`i will be the buzz of ESPN. The CU will have the passengers on their flight home offering condolences and asking them if they saw the Truck coming! Warrior fans who stayed home will kicking eachother for not witnessing the birth of a new dynasty…That’s why its Hawai`i 50-0!

  162. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 12:45 pm

    #160,

There are going to be a lot of surprises. But all I can say is that Hawaii winning will not be one of them. =)

  163. Kevin September 1, 2011 12:47 pm

    AlaWai,

Local crowd. Overly reserved. More like the local attitude of no like “Make A–“.

Now, if the cheerleaders had signs that said:

-Go back and forth to beer stands and watch game from the bridge

-Go call friend on cell phone to get them to wave to you from their seat

-Go check your phone for the scores on other games to see if you made money

    -Sit down

    -Stare blankly

-Hit the noisy kids in front of your view with a rolled up newspaper

    Then… WE’VE GOT CROWD PARTICIPATION!!!!!!!!

  164. Kevin September 1, 2011 12:48 pm

    I like see UH win.

  165. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 12:49 pm

***Non-Football, but just thought I’d toss this out there if people like see.***

Threw out some articles a few months ago about some of the incoming players for the upcoming season and found another, this time for a walk-on.

    Full Article:

    http://skokie.patch.com/articles/whiz-kid-keiko-sugihara

Keiko Sugihara (infielder/pitcher), to try to walk on to Rainbow Wahine for fall 2011/spring 2012

The Niles North faculty was right on the mark in naming Keiko Sugihara as the Class of 2011 Outstanding Girl. Sugihara brings an incredible passion and extraordinary ability to most every endeavor she pursues as reflected in the numerous awards she has received. Sugihara is a star athlete, top-notch student and devoted volunteer. She is also a natural leader who inspires and brings out the best her contemporaries.

Sugihara has received numerous awards and has served in key leadership positions. In addition to the winning the Outstanding Senior Girl award, Sugihara received the Positive Coaching Alliance 2011 Triple Impact Competitor award, as well as the U.S. Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award given to the top female student-athlete at Niles North.

Sugihara has also been a four-year member of both the varsity volleyball and softball teams. She served as captain for both teams and received all-conference honors in both sports this year. Sugihara was also the go-to pitcher on the softball squad, which finished the season with a 21-13 record.

Head softball coach Karin Wick echoed these sentiments: “ This year, Keiko took it to a whole new level as an athlete, competitor and leader. She knows how to handle tough situations on and off the field. Nothing rattles her. She is a big reason why we are doing so well. Simply put, Keiko is an amazing kid”

Sugihara also enjoys digital photography and the outdoors. She will be attending the University of Hawaii, where she will pursue studies in environmental science this fall (2011). She will also tryout for the school’s softball team as a walk-on.

UNLV v Wisconsin game on ESPN right now.

Wisconsin run game looks crisp as to be expected.

  196. MattyBoy September 1, 2011 2:35 pm

Does anyone know how our offense looks?? So far I’ve only heard how good our defense is. What about our offense?

  197. BleedGreen808 September 1, 2011 2:44 pm

This offense is going to surprise a lot of the haters come Saturday.

    Couldn’t agree with you anymore.

If our receiver corp can stay healthy I wouldn’t be surprised to see some big numbers being put up.

  202. Shoko September 1, 2011 2:50 pm

Someone getting lickens on national TV. Wonder if the Badgers will let the Rebels score at all or send them home with a big goose egg.

  203. A-joe September 1, 2011 2:52 pm

    Come on Rebels!

    Have some Pride!

    Get in there and Fight!!

  204. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 2:53 pm

    Shoko,

UNLV seem to have some high points but they just cant sustain a drive long enough to score. Wisconsin D inside of 25 yards has shut them down big time.

Was pulling for UNLV to get the upset but that went down the drain about 2 minutes ago hahaha.

  205. Shoko September 1, 2011 2:54 pm

    IWTHM,

Yup, 0-4 on third down conversions and only 5 first downs.

  206. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 2:55 pm

With the talent level that UNLV recruits, I don’t know if running a pro-style offense is the right fit.

  207. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 3:04 pm

0-6 on third down…yet they can move the ball just fine. what.

  208. Shoko September 1, 2011 3:05 pm

Rebels fans breathes a sigh of relief as they are now on the board. 😉

  209. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 3:12 pm

    UNLV football:

Go down 75 yards, give ball back to opponent. Repeat.

I’d hate to be a Rebel fan today.

  210. Shoko September 1, 2011 3:13 pm

    Wow, Wilson got some wheels!

    Re: #197

We got this kid named Moniz at QB. He’s a player.

Mebbe you heard of him? J/k…offense will do just fine.

    Go Warriors!

  213. clowns nose September 1, 2011 3:25 pm

    Re-Croson’s height

In the sport’s section I see a picture of the trio of Wahine volley players, Croson, Hartong and Satele. Croson’s listed on the UH’s roster at 5-11. Yet in the picture she appears to be taller than 5-11, maybe an inch or so shorter than Hartong, who’s listed at 6-2.

    Laura?

  214. Kevin September 1, 2011 3:25 pm

    A-House,

I screamed the same thing when Kaepernick played here. 😎

I was asking for ankles though. They are far more tender than knees.

  215. Shoko September 1, 2011 3:29 pm

Battles are won and lost in the trenches. If can not protect the General, might be in trouble.

  216. Bryson September 1, 2011 3:36 pm

    #212 A-House

Yup, hated McMahon. That left footed 96 yard punt was…well…jeeze….I still haven’t recovered. LOL

Eh, so anyway, your plan for da Mrs wen work den. 😉

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  222. d1shima September 1, 2011 3:54 pm

UNLV needed to play a perfect game to keep this game close…they aren’t, it’s not.

  223. d1shima September 1, 2011 3:55 pm

Go after the thumb on the QB’s throwing hand…harder for the refs to see.

  225. Ben A Lurker September 1, 2011 3:57 pm

Re: WITP Greg Salas – roster cuts (good news, maybe..)

Rams have tough choices at WR

There’s been speculation in recent days over which players NFL teams will cut to get down to the 53-man limit. For the St. Louis Rams, the wide receiver position seems to be a popular area from which to delete some players. (Here’s a look back from Aug. 26).

With the team set to play its preseason finale on Thursday night, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hosted a round-table discussion on whether 2011 picks Greg Salas (a third-rounder) and Austin Pettis (a fourth-rounder) would be amongst those shown the door.

The consensus amongst those participating in the debate is that Salas appears fairly safe to make the squad, while Pettis will have to show something significant in Thursday’s game. So while we may not see the big stars too much (if at all) in this round of preseason contests, these games do mean quite a lot to a number of players on the cusp.

  227. COCOBEAN September 1, 2011 4:00 pm

Derek, you’re a betting man, right? One of the tenets of gambling is bet with your head not your heart. I don’t know if Pride or WS have money on the game but they do seem to know football. Well Laura is Laura, he thrives on responses negative or otherwise. When he’s nice no one responds, when he’s negative some people can’t resist to respond.

For me I gave up betting long ago. Hawaii 30, B-loes 27.

Coach Mack Show Kick Off Special

  239. Kekoa September 1, 2011 5:30 pm

Pomai ~ Regarding that knuckle knuckle that risked his neck diving over the seats for that Bowzooka t-shirt in our section was NUTZ!.

I was totally stunned by his desperate leap from the hdcp row behind you, and crash landing in the row in front you! Wot a fricken idiot!

Then, I noticed how nobody moved a muscle to help him up cuz he shouldn’t have been sitting in the hdcp seats in the 1st place. He was complaining about you standing for the UH kickoffs as per usual.

If he sits in those seats again, tell the usher to check to see if he has the Hdcp certificate in his wallet. They check ’em at the gate to match parking passes, they can do the same for those seats. Meanwhile, remember my cousin ULU is a bail bonds woman, GEEVE ‘UM!

    Mahalo for the reminder MIH!

Can’t believe that old skinny legs is still on the 49er’s roster and Colt is sitting at home. If he makes the cut then the 49er’s don’t have a chance due to their stupidity.

  248. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 6:21 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I’m going to miss the 7pm showing. Hope you can provide us (me) a recap after.

  249. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 1, 2011 6:26 pm

    Pomai,

Harbaugh is known for grooming QB’s at all levels. For him to take Kap that early in the draft must mean he has some pretty good qualities. Hard as it is for me to admit it.

I mean its not like he’s insane like Al Davis and chooses QB based upon god knows what. Sorry Ralph. lol

  250. Pomai September 1, 2011 6:29 pm

IWWTHYM – skinny legs will never ever be a pro caliber QB, he can’t throw the ball worth a dang. I still want to see him run and get creamed.

    Pomai #248:

I was jus telling Mrs A-House the same thing about 10 minutes ago!

49ers brass have been terrible in selecting QB draft choices for more than 10 years now – they picked Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers!

  254. papajoe2 September 1, 2011 7:27 pm

I woke up 2 mornings ago. Still groggy from lack of sleep the last few days and went outside to get the SA newspaper. Started to read the front page while heading back to the house. I thought what a beautiful morning for some Warrior football. As my head cleared, I realized that it was only Wednesday. Say it ain’t so. This morning, same thing. Geee, I guess Saturday can’t come fast enough. Go Warriors!!

    A-House,

You are confusing the 49ers with Oakland. The “Brass” actually listen to the HC when it comes to personnel matters. LOL.

Hate to say it, but Kap has the potential or Harbaugh would never have taken him so early.

  259. Ballpicker September 1, 2011 8:09 pm

Go warrior football, play hard, play smart and play till the end.

Had to walk away from the tv. Leahey saying Ohio state from the PAC 10. What a dumb shit. I’m tired of listening to his mistakes and embarrassing the university. He’s beyond embarrassing himself because he doesn’t cars. Too BAD. I am pissed.

    Get him off the air.

Fill in the blank. Leahey doesn’t ________ cars.

    a) wash

    b) drive

    c) buy

    d) crash

Just messing with you man. I get a bit frustrated with his errors too, but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect what he’s done for Hawaii sports over the years. That can’t be denied, like him or not. Have you ever listened to Coach Price call the high school games? Even worse!

    Scan a few lines..and…nm.

Lucky I caught this one, though.

    • The Warriors spent about 15 minutes discussing where everyone will stand during the game and sideline etiquette. It’s another attention to detail that often gets overlooked.

    I like this. Great.

  274. d1shima September 1, 2011 9:52 pm

Good, hard, sharp, and sure tackling is the very essence of a successful defense, and no player should hope to be placed upon a team unless he has become adept in this most important of football fundamentals. No team is going to be severely beaten, even if it has no offense at all, if it is composed of eleven good tacklers….

    —GLENN SCOBEY (POP) WARNER

  275. d1shima September 1, 2011 9:58 pm

Changes in the game have altered tackling’s role to the next step in its evolution

tackling has also become one of the most uncertain elements in the modern NFL, altered not only by evolutions in strategy (sideline-to-sideline passing attacks supplanting between-the-numbers power running) and performance (more elusive athletes with each passing year), but also most recently by rules changes designed to protect ballcarriers from injuries by limiting concussive, helmet-to-helmet hits. The pure, unbridled, bone-jarring tackle is a fading memory.

  276. d1shima September 1, 2011 10:03 pm

It is a thing of primitive beauty, the pure tackle. For so long, an essential part of the fight. Closer now to a lost art.

Hey there! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good success. If you know of any please share. Many thanks!

  281. d1shima September 1, 2011 10:58 pm

The Warriors have a closed walk-through scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, after which they will check into a hotel for a night of meetings.

Is this scheduled at the Stadium? ILH doubleheader kick-off is set for 5pm…not much “afternoon” available.

Hope the bus schedule is planned accordingly and takes into account Friday afternoon traffic.

Hi there, I must say I’m a big fan of your site however I feel your site content would REALLY benefit from the SEOpressor plugin.

    Aloha all…from stltoday.com…

“Rookie receiver Greg Salas was a beast, again. His ability to convert third down passes in traffic makes him an outstanding prospect. He played ahead of fellow rookie Austin Pettis throughout the preseason. The Rams really didn’t intend to take two wide receivers in the draft. The staff picked Pettis over Salas in the third round, by a small margin. Then the war room was stunned to see Salas sitting there in the fourth round. So the Rams grabbed him, too. That turned out to be a very good move.”

    Be strong and healthy!

  294. mctruck September 2, 2011 5:30 am

Discussion on the Herd/espnu this morning….although BYU is favored to win in Ol’Miss, the climate will allow for an upset…which kinda makes sense to me.

Athletic-teams, pro-or-college east of Dallas will win national championships because their fan base expect and demand it. The fans actually beat down on teams that don’t produce…they bitch and complain and get down and dirty if their expectations are not met..and that’s what the discussions where on the Herd this morning on ESPNU. (food for thought).

We’ll be at a future T-Gate or two, gmahoney. The Mack show was pretty good, I thought. Liked the part where The Ferd and Bobby Curran appeared, it was good to get their perspectives on things.

Traffic good coming from Kailua, so maybe he over slept.

  324. warriorsun September 2, 2011 8:04 am

greg salas is my favorite all time hawaii receiver regardless of what he does in the nfl. mighty mouse is second. one thing that seperated salas from the rest–he never looked for the sideline and consistently caught balls in thick traffic or made the spectacular look ordinary. retire his number. greg salas is the standard bearer for hawaii receivers.

  325. papajoe2 September 2, 2011 8:08 am

O-o, now I getting worried. ST missing all day and this morning. I hope everything is pono.

  326. Laura September 2, 2011 8:14 am
