Field test

MOSCOW โ€” Of all the reasons to conduct a walk-through practice, two compelling ones are found in the Gem State โ€” Idaho’s Kibbie Dome and Boise State’s blue turf. Few other sites are comparable.

Only 13 of the 64 Warriors on the travel roster played in the Kibbie Dome in 2009, the last meeting in Moscow between UH and Idaho.

Unlike other domes, Kibbie is smaller (seating capacity of 16,000), with no seats behind the end zones. UH punter Alex Dunnachie was able to boot punts that struck the hanging scoreboard during the walk-through in 2009.

The conditions have improved, with a forgiving artificial surface and more lighting tracks installed. Also, a wall behind the end zone was refurbished to allow in more natural lighting. All of which is to say: The Kibbie Dome is not Aloha Stadium.

Scouts for the Houston Texans and Washington Redskins met with UH coaches this morning to discuss NFL prospects.

Based on the evaluations from scouts the past few weeks, the Warriors rated the highest are Kaniela Tuipulotu, Vaughn Meatoga, Royce Pollard, Bryant Moniz, Aaron Brown, Zach Masch, Corey Paredes and Richard Torres.

Meatoga’s stock has soared in the past month. He is viewed as both an end and a tackle. With his strength and relative speed, he is viewed as an ideal end in a 3-4 defense.

The talk is that Paredes projects as fullback. Asked if he ever ย played running back, Paredes told the WB: “Only my first year of Pop Warner.”

    Game Day Eve, Baby!!!

    Go, Warriors!!!

  2. CoolEthan October 28, 2011 5:42 am

Televised games at the kibbie dome usually results in a dull looking broadcast, compared to Aloha stadium and other venues that are packed full tilt with fan base and school colors.

The vandal games @ the kibbie are downright grey matter.

  3. Wes'side Warrior October 28, 2011 5:45 am

Take care of business, and let’s get out of town!

    Take care of the ball.

Get in synch early and move them chains.

Play aggressive, inspired ball on offense and defense.

Wrap up (and steal da ball).

    Click on Special Teams.

    Have fun!

WW – That wraps it up nicely.

Smash them up, get the win, and move on.

As you can imagine, with a surname pronounced “Mash” and a land known for potatoes, Zach Masch has heard a lot of punny comments the past couple of days.

Cue in a Halloween weekend of games. This will be a fun saturday to watch for college fans and Sunday with the NFL.

Should be a dedicated fan camera. ‘Nawlins fans go all out.

I remember when the BSU president, Kustra, said that the Vandal fans were the worst in the country. Hope any Warrior fans that are attending the game get treated with respect.

If Missouri doesn’t get their SEC invite, WV might not be going anywhere since the Big 12 wants to remain at ten schools. Unless they decide to go to 12 teams and invites another school.

    Paredes as a 12 year-old FB sounds unfair. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

  30. CoolEthan October 28, 2011 6:45 am

Both Boise and Moscow are very nice towns, but the college atmosphere has contrast to each own.

Boise has a more family atmosphere at the games. Isn’t alcohol a no-no at the Boise stadium?

  31. d1shima October 28, 2011 6:45 am

It must be comforting to the Vandal faithful that at least two NFL teams can remember how to get to ID!

  32. Shoko October 28, 2011 6:46 am

Wow, there is 12-year old kid that is 6-2 and weighs little over 250 pounds. His name is T.J Mauga and brother of Josh Mauga, who plays for the New York Jets. He also is the cousin of former NFL player Junior Seau. Uh, can someone at UH contact this kid. He could be a beast when he gets older.

  33. d1shima October 28, 2011 6:46 am

With all the talk of Conference teams movement for Bigger $$$

Too bad Big West is not anywhere close to Big East.

Big Apples gets all the worms.

  46. mikey October 28, 2011 8:27 am

With all the talk of Big $$$ in football TV Deals.

Big West should consider starting a football program, so that UH can stay

All sports program in Big West and jump off the soon to be sinking MWC.

That’s what Dreams a made of. Ahh to Dream Big is a good thing… Big West…

    Go Big (Big West!)

  47. al October 28, 2011 8:28 am

actually…uh recruit reeve koehler was about the same size as that kid you all are taking about when mack offered him a scholie while he was just 13 years old.

he is only a junior, 6’3″/285lb.

  48. al October 28, 2011 8:30 am

that chant…”block that kick! block that kick!”

has brought new meaning to our ears these days.

  49. funny October 28, 2011 8:30 am

If he stays healthy through the rest of the season I think Brown has the greatest NFL draft potential followed by Meatoga and Tuipulotu. I don’t think he’ll be drafted due to the prejudice against his size, but I’d love to see Torres receive a free agent invite to someone’s camp so that he can show exactly how good he is.

  50. al October 28, 2011 8:34 am

tomorrow’s game looms as another one of those trap games.

i hope we are fully prepared for an ambush.

much respect must go to robb akey, a very crafty coach for the idaho baked potatoes. i hope we bring the sour cream, bacon and chives and have lunch on them.

  51. al October 28, 2011 8:35 am

why does the ncaa allow all this juggling?

  52. mikey October 28, 2011 8:35 am

It’ll be a huge monumental day tomorrow at our house.

11:00 UH vs. Idaho Game Day!

3:00 BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz

    5:00 Halloween Costum Party

    Party all day and night

Warrior Flag will be flying high over the satellite dish tomorrow.

  53. al October 28, 2011 8:38 am

    pandora’s box effect…

this modern day hatfield’s and mccoy’s rivalry that is west virginia/louisville could just become the achille’s heel of the bcs powers. if that senator takes it to the senate committee it could force congress to pursue a congressional investigation in these matters.

    then the box is open.

  54. losthawaiian October 28, 2011 8:38 am

Thanks Pomai and DPK! I just sent it to the coach.

  55. Stephen Tsai October 28, 2011 8:39 am

That guy from the Jets makes people rethink the prototype for a safety. But, yep, it still will be an uphill battle against “measurables” for Torres.

  56. al October 28, 2011 8:40 am

cooler heads (…er, pocketbooks) will prevail…

in lieu of that possible scenario, i’ll bet the house that the big 12, urged by the other bcs boys, will accept both west virginia and louisville just to avoid that political stuff/entanglement.

  57. al October 28, 2011 8:42 am

soon these conferences will have to drop the numbers…

    big ten

    big 12

    pac 12

    in this ever changing alignments.

  58. al October 28, 2011 8:43 am

There are many small NFL players with great talent. It’s Big Hearth that matters in football.

  64. d1shima October 28, 2011 8:52 am

Isn’t WVU’s big rivalry with Pitt in the “Backyard Brawl”?

  65. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2011 8:52 am

Al, re #57, I’d like to see that happen because it would kill the Big East but I doubt it.

It looks now like Louisville will stay put, and by the middle of next week Boise State, Air Force, Houston, SMU and UCF will all have joined the Big East, with Navy and BYU possibly next in line.

The MWC/CUSA football alliance will be left with 17 members combined. The question will be whether to expand back to just 18, or raid the WAC and Sun Belt and go to 24. I think the alliance will add one, set up two 9-member divisions, and cut a deal with one of the TV networks to show the annual championship game. The winner won’t get an AQ bid but will be first in line among the non-AQs to qualify for the BCS at-large bid.

  66. mikey October 28, 2011 8:57 am

When I was living in SF with season ticket

I watched Blaine Gaison of Atlanta Falcons vs Dana Maclamore SF 49ers back in the 80’s

Dana was only 5-10 but got drafted by 49ers in the 10th Round

He had 5 interceptions and 3 Fumble recoveries

    And here’s a story on Blaine: http://warriorquotes.wordpress.com/2009/07/19/blaine-gaison-is-centurians-12/

  67. funny October 28, 2011 9:00 am

What is with this irrational hatred of the Big (L)East that some seem to have? Is it based in geography, jealousy, their AQ status, a sense that it is overrated, or what? Looking back, I see the BE being a far better conference top to bottom than the Wack and if this western expansion happens they will be an even stronger conference with greater revenue potential than in its current form.

  68. funny October 28, 2011 9:03 am

64 – I agree, for a player like Torres size and speed doesn’t matter as he just plain gets the job done and has natural leadership qualities. As I said in my post, he likely won’t be drafted due to a prejudice that exists based on his measurables but does deserves a shot to show how good he really is.

  69. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2011 9:15 am

Re #87, it’s not personal, just business. The death of the Big East as a football conference would have put the MWC/CUSA alliance in position to pick up the Big East leftovers, get a better TV deal, and possibly (though not necessarily likely) land the Big East’s AQ bid. That would have been good for UH. Now it looks like it won’t happen.

  70. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2011 9:17 am

I meant re #68, not re #87. (Responding to funny’s post.)

  71. uhfan09 October 28, 2011 9:17 am

Will uh be the only team with a place kicker with a knee brace. Im sure idaho will see that and go after that leg.

  72. Stephen Tsai October 28, 2011 9:26 am

I think if you see a kicker with a knee brace, you don’t go after that kicker. You want an opposing kicker with a knee brace to kick.

  73. Bowwar October 28, 2011 9:47 am

ST – I’m fed-up with our kicking situation…Just go for two…We can’t do any worse.

  74. djmitcho October 28, 2011 9:50 am

There is definitely adult beverage consumption outside of the big barn in Moscow. They have a specific area for consumption while tailgating, but the beverages definitely flow outside of those areas too. Gonna try and scream loud enough for all the tsaikos tomorrow at the game.

  75. jm2375 October 28, 2011 9:56 am

al-san – I was trying to explain the history of the HUMMers/Pac-5 to Screecher the other day. The “modern” day Pac-5 team consists of varying # of schools depending on the year and sport.

  76. A-House October 28, 2011 10:01 am

  77. A-House October 28, 2011 10:09 am

    speaking of Hummers:

back in 1967 when the Army was about to purchase the HUMVEE, we had a demonstration at Ft Knox – announcer says vehicle can navigate a 40 degree slope with no problems – well, driver goes up the slope and HUMVEE promptly over turns – so much for demonstrations!

best demonstartion I ever saw was also at Ft Knox – picture this – you are seated on wooden bleachers out in no man’s land with an open area before you – maybe 100 yds x 200 yds – beyond this bare patch of earth, are rolling hills with shrubs and brees – announcer says, “ladies and gentlemen, US Armor” – suddenly, out of nowhere, come 10 M-60 main battle tanks at full trottle at the bleachers ( M-60 has top speed of 45 mph ) and comes to screeching halt about 10 yards from the first row of seats!

When the dust settles, all the General officers and their wives are covered in dirt!

    big oooopppppppppssssssss!!!

Due to the agreement between the Aloha Stadium and Centerplate any beer/wine cutoff has to be agreed to by the vendor. Does the safety of the fan (s) come first??

    Don Weir – Agreed.

We had some pretty scary moments watching intoxicated wahine at the UNLV game too…

People need more aloha and less alcohol…

Does the safety of the fan (s) come first??

Of course not. The Stadium Authority want profit first otherwise there really is no reason for its being.

Lois Manin said on Arty Wilson’s show that there is a number that people can call if they think that there may have a problem brewing in the stadium. I forgot what the number is but they have flashed it on the jumbo.

The number to report bad behavior at the stadium is 483-2807 .

However, I think they should open the gates not so early as they do now, because some have too much time to get drunk before the game.

I hope that the UH offense has been practicing their 2 pt. conversions. They might need it in this game. One thing I noticed about Oregon is that on more than one occasion they went for the 2 pt. conversion, and made it, after their first touchdown. That Chip Kelly is one agressive coach and very confident too! I guess he knew it would work. A wrinkle here and there keeps the opponents guessing and keep them on their heels. Advantage, offense.

    That’s a very good strategy.

If we don’t turn the ball over and be effective in the red zones it shouldn’t be a close game tomorrow. If not, then we’ll be hanging on til the final play just like San Jose St.

  92. maddog50 October 28, 2011 12:33 pm

  94. madeinhawaii October 28, 2011 12:46 pm

If they make 1 in 3 two point conversions, it will be no worse that what we have now. BUT it will give the offense more valuable opportunities to practice punching it in when they are in the Red Zone.

What happened to Avery at WR??? He’s a Senior and you’d figger he should be in the mix…

  102. Bowwar October 28, 2011 1:09 pm

UH needs to recruit a kicker for next year…We can’t be leaving points on the field and expect to be competitive. Nothing against Hadden, but if he can’t perform due to injuries, etc., then they need someone to step forward…

  103. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 28, 2011 1:31 pm

What I don’t understand is how Hadden handles FG outside of 30 yards or whatever, but when its inside of that Chun will handle the kicks.

Seems counter-intuitive that as the FG get shorter, his accuracy goes down. That’s so strange.

Na Wahine soccer holding strong, game at 0-0 into the 48 minute. In the pre season they gave up way too many early goals to make the task of catching up difficult to overcome.

Na Wahine is 3-1-1 in the WAC, three way tie for second with 2 games to play, including today’s match up with the Aggies.

  123. Ralph October 28, 2011 4:03 pm

dang, jinx them, Aggies ahead 1-0 in the 49th minute. Like in basketball or WVB, when the team comes out of the break the need to be up and ready. The teams play a 45 minute halves.

Seems counter-intuitive that as the FG get shorter, his accuracy goes down. That’s so strange.

Ummm, it probably has to do with leg strength? If Chun can’t reach from past 40, he has zero chance of making the FG, where at least if Hadden can reach the posts he has more of a chance than Chun. Just like if you leave a putt short you will make zero percent of your putts.

It’s better if they can kick a PAT than going for 2. If they can’t kick a PAT then they can’t kick a FG either and you need to be able to do that.

  131. tommui October 28, 2011 5:24 pm

    WARRIORMOJO: #125

I would guess that the witness was huhu at being kicked out of Aiea High where he was skating boarding – which would have been trespassing in any event. And his naming Coach Say was his idea of getting back.

Coach Say should sue the witness for slander/libel.

  132. d1shima October 28, 2011 5:28 pm

Is Hawaii’s “trespass statute still in force?

Back in the early 70s when I was handling claims, our court system did away with trespassing – it was a case where a homeless person went to sleep in the lanai and was caught, but the courts ruled that he was not “trespassing” and threw the case out.

My immediate response was, “well Judge you would not mind if I came into your property at any time for whatever reason and you can’t do diddly about it”.

I’m sure I was not dreaming!

Dave Reardon was at yesterday’s Stadium Authority meeting and actually took part in the discussions. First time I’ve ever seen a journalist type be part of a meeting’s agenda which s/he was covering. I shared with him my confrontation last season with a woman who kept marking incredibly awful comments about the number of N-Word players on the team.

I have a call out to the person in DaGov’s office who handles appointments to boards, commissions, and committees which are made by DG and approved by the State Senate. I will post the qualifications as soon as I get them so that we can start looking around for someone to fill one of the upcoming vacancies on the Authority.

Big sports weekend – congrats to the Cardinals – nice that the National League did it again. Tomorrow it’s football at Murphy’s and then softball & basketball on campus & Wahine volleyball on the radio.

Ran into Virginia Hinshaw the other day at the Regents’ meeting out in Kapolei. She is working very closely with Jim Donovan to get the Rounds 1 & 2 of the NCAA volleyball playoffs, but the BYU game at 2:30 pm on December 3 may be a harrassle because ESPN will be covering both sports. More to come on this by the time the last matches of the regular season are played in two weeks.

  141. tommui October 28, 2011 8:42 pm

#143 – Virginia Hinshaw is one hell of a woman! I’m glad that she will still be around at UH – she is the type of person that the University needs!

Slow blog day, OT,since we are pass the 9 p.m. dateline.

First Nation Wisdom i’d like to share:

Before our white brothers came to civilize us we had no jails.

Therefore we had no criminals. You canโ€™t have criminals without a jail.

We had no locks or keys, and so we had no thieves. If a man was so poor that he had no horse, tipi or blanket, someone gave him these things.

We were too uncivilized to set much value on personal belongings. We wanted to have things only in order to give them away. We had no money, and therefore a manโ€™s worth couldnโ€™t be measured by it. We had no written law, no attorney or politicians, therefore we couldnโ€™t cheat. We were in a really bad way before the white man came, and I donโ€™t know how we managed to get along without the basic things which, we are told, are absolutely necessary to make a civilized society.” Lame Deer

Chad Owens’ team beat the first-place Winnipeg team last night.

Special teams, as usual, were a big part of the win. Willie Pile forced a kick return fumble that was recovered by Lin-J Shell, and Owens racked up 171 yards on returns.
