Feeling blue

The blue period might be coming to an end.

After Saturday’s nationally televised game against Boise State, the Warriors and Broncos might not meet again for a long time. This is the Broncos’ final year in the Mountain West Conference.

Neither team appears interested in meeting in a regular-season game. The Broncos don’t like to interrupt their regular season with a trip this far away, particularly once they begin playing a Big East schedule. And politeness aside, nobody likes to play the Broncos in Boise.

* * * * *

There is growing concern about the Warriors’ health situation.

Mike Edwards has a sore left shoulder. Similar discomfort to the same shoulder resulted in surgery following the 2011 season. Edwards is tough enough to play cornerback despite pain, but this condition probably will limit his work as a kickoff returner. Chinedu Amadi is next up as the deep kick returner. Chris Gant, who has been serving the understudy role, did not make the trip because of an arm injury.

Wide receiver Trevor Davis was examined at a hospital last night after suffering what appeared to be a neck injury.

The offensive line also is ailing. Dave Lefotu, who has an ankle injury, was supposed to be used on a need-to-play basis. He was summoned after Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, who started at right guard, suffered an injury. Utility lineman Kapua Sai  already was being used at left guard after Kody Afusia suffered an ankle ailment. Afusia said he will resume practicing this week.

    First. And, good morning.

The injury bug has really bitten hard this year. I hope the doctors and trainers can work some magic and help the players who are dealing with these issues return to health quickly.

  3. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 4:42 am

Sucks for Edwards and the rest of the injured Warriors. I know these boys have been trying to give all they got and are continuously getting pounded. It is the reason why if there are 64 spots on a travel roster, 64 spots should be filled with able bodies. I’m sure every player on the team works hard in school, practice, enough to earn some sort of PT or at least a chance to travel and suit up if needed on the field. More injuries are going to occur before seasons end cause the way this team gets beaten up, it’s going to happen.

    Hello….

  5. PurpleMaple November 4, 2012 5:01 am

Pauoa Boy, I totally agree. Coach needs to coach to get to the win column. Getting 4-5 star players is a vision that does not exist. The entire WAC in 2011 was unable to recruit a single 4-5 star player. But teams like Utah St. and San Jose St. are getting better each year with 2-star players.

Hey there, You have done an excellent job. I’ll definitely digg it and personally suggest to my friends. I am confident they will be benefited from this site.

It’s higginsTime…injuries seem To happen more when a team consistently lose. Maybe mentally defeated before each game starts. I dunno. But Warriors are in a deep hole…QB Higgins gives a better chance to salvage the rest of the season with some tiny optimism.

    We suck.

Chow is the worst coach in college football.

Had a chance to watch the game at a bar with free beer and pupus. I passed. Who cares about UH football at this point, because it is not football as we know it. It is not competitive. It is not entertaining.

This was a competitive bunch of guys. Chow has totally misused the talent.

I didn’t even watch the game and knew FSU would cover the spread by half time. Of course FSU will pull its starters and coast the rest of the game — best job security for the other coaches is to keep Chow as UH coach.

The only thing worse than Chow’s coaching is his post-game comments. “He’s my qb, we are going to work harder, we need to coach better”, etc. Give me a break. Just shut up and do it already.

UH football under Chow is, and will remain, totally irrelevant.

I have to think any recruit looking at coming here is clueless.

Who told Chow we were so bad last year he could afford to do this? Mack knew sitting Will Gregory last year might cost him a chance at the bowl, and he was right. It was a tough decision. Had Will played we’d have made the bowl and Chow wouldn’t be here.

Fortunately, there is some really good college football being played out there, and with cable it isn’t hard to find.

For you folks who continue to be in a love-fest with Chow, wake up already. As the FSU coach said, they targeted this game as an opportunity to play their reserves. Ouch!

  9. lava November 4, 2012 5:29 am

UCLA is kind of change UH must have hoped for when bringing in Chow.

First years coach Jim Mora inherited a team that went 6-7. He is using a new qb, and the starting o-line features 3 freshman and 1 sophomore. UCLA is now 7-2.

Granted UCLA is getting better talent, but they are playing better teams. UCLA and UH are moving in two different directions. The local boys who left to play there now look very wise.

How long are we going to let Chow remain in control of the asylum?

  10. just saying November 4, 2012 5:33 am

Finally chow gives another quaterback a chance too play, Higgins looked faster and better than shroeder , you could see the team come alive after that touchdown.Just think if he gave another quaterback a chance earlier in the season we possibly could have won another game or two.Too bad chow chose favortism over the team.Time after time you see first year head coaches utilizing the teams strengths while implementing their new offense and winning. What if next year we dont have the quaterback and offensive line chow envisions, will we have a repeat of this year.I thought norm chow was brought here for his passing offense, but he chooses to run the ball instead.I would like to see norm chow succeed, but I think he needs to adapt and think outside of the box , because if he sticks too his old gotta play harder concept I dont think he will make it too his third year.

ST … sorry if this was asked and answered, but what do the Oceanic guys say happened to the free Oceanic feeds (218 & 1218) for the UH-Fresno game? The game showed up as “NEW” programs on both channels, and were on the air for maybe an hour. I turned away to watch the Oregon-USC game, and the picture was black when I returned. Thank you.

  15. Shoko November 4, 2012 6:13 am

Methinks Oceanic made a mistake by televising the game for free. When they realized this they blacked it out.

  16. Highest November 4, 2012 6:13 am

Excellent post. I was checking constantly this weblog and I am impressed! Extremely helpful info particularly the last section 🙂 I handle such information a lot. I was looking for this particular information for a long time. Thanks and good luck.

  17. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 6:15 am

I don’t care about star ratings but the upper echelon type of players isn’t even thinking of having UH on their radar at all. Lucky we got Zwhalen but bruddah hasn’t signed the dotted line yet. Just saying this wait until Coach gets his players in is some bull honky fat donkey. He ain’t going to get no USC type talent, maybe a onsie-twosie if at all…

  18. Shoko November 4, 2012 6:18 am

I know Chow doesn’t believe in a two-QB system, but I think using the other QB’s skills in certain situations would greatly benefit the offense. Sort of how Harbaugh uses Kaepernick instead of Smith in specific situations.

That said, if Chow decides to stick with Schroeder, there’s not much else a fan can do.

To use the cliche (once again): It is what it is.

  19. Hilo Moon November 4, 2012 6:21 am

I once agreed with the “wait till UH recruits players that fit into Coach Cow’s system.” If that’s the excuse for the low scores, what’s the excuse for the defense allowing such high scores? Is that another system that needs players to “fit into?”

Also, in observing coach on the sidelines, I notice that he ignores the players as they go in and out of the game. There’s no positive reinforcement, with words or touch — a pat on the back or a word or two. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that don’t give’em hell when they do wrong, but also recognize when they do right, even if it is what they are supposed to do.

He doesn’t have to go “overboard” with superficial praise — a simple “lookin’ good” or “good job” can go a long way. Please note that I at home watching the games on TV, so some wonderful things may be happening on the sidelnes that I don’t see.

  20. Manoa November 4, 2012 6:25 am

At some point people need to recognize that a “gimmicky” scheme like Fresno’s no huddle spread offense is superior to the old pro set we are running– it has changed college football and now is changing the NFL. The advantage it has is that it produces more yards, more points, and gives the team running it many more plays a game– coaches are saying in college and the NFL that time of possession is a worthless statistic. Who cares about time of possession if you run more plays and have more chances to score?

When you play an offense like Fresno’s when you have a low scoring offense like the old proset, you have a disadvantage, because (1) you are going to get fewer plays, fewer yards and fewer points, (2) you put tons of pressure on your defense– you have a low scoring offense like the old version of the proset, so your defense has to stop a very hard offense to defend. Meanwhile your opponent knows every one of the plays you run and how to stop them– you need to over power, out run, and execute at a very high level to even have a chance.

  22. Bleed Green and White November 4, 2012 6:37 am

UH football team ‘aint very good right now. That sucks, I agree with “Pauoa Boy” and “Lava”.

However, what I don’t agree with, is that Norm Chow sucks as well.

The guy’s got a resume any coach would die for, he’s found many successes in his career, in various systems.

The wools is not covering my eyes, but I find myself still having hope that one day we will see light at the end o the tunnel so to speak.

I also agree with “Lava”and “Pauoa Boy”, that 4-5 star recruits will not come this way. Never will.

During previous regimes, Jones & McMackin, to be honest, there was no emphasis on recruiting at all. It was horrible. Program got lucky landing guys like Brennan, Bess, Moniz etc…..

The reason why I continue to hold out hope, is because for the first time, I see a recruiting effort being made top priority, Now it would be much easier to recruit if UH were winning, I get that, but the effort to recruit in and of itself, I’d like o see where it leads the program.

But no question, we’re not very good right now.

Still though, I’m not quitting on these young men, I appreciate their efforts.

  23. Joe Finkelberg November 4, 2012 6:45 am

    Great post.

  24. el burro sabio November 4, 2012 6:50 am

If everything were being done wrong the final scores would be 125-0. So something is being done right; what is it and how can that be built on?

  25. forsurftoo November 4, 2012 6:53 am

Chow should read books by Wagner and Jones in which they explain why they used offensive schemes to match the type of players we could recruit. Chow doesn’t get the fact that we can’t get the players that fits his system.

PS: I did not renew my season tickets that I held since 1978. I could not justify paying so much to feel so bad!

  26. PONO November 4, 2012 6:54 am

I know people are getting impatient and no one likes to lose in the fashion that we’ve been losing. However, I think we do need to give Chow at least a couple of years. As much as people want to have a knee jerk reaction to the losses, next year will be much better. It takes some time to change the personnel to fit the scheme and also to have the players get used to a new regime and what they expect. Year 2 is always much easier for a coach. I expect a lot of transfers after this year but then we should be good to go.

  27. Shoko November 4, 2012 7:06 am

Not sure if the proset is the problem. Boise runs a classic proset and yet they don’t get 4 or 5 star recruits. Boise’s success comes from having run that system for many years and it might take Chow years before we see any postive results.

Whether Chow succeeds or fails, its going to be on his terms. The only problem is that I’m not sure Warrior fans have the patience to see that come to fruition.

  28. kev-1 November 4, 2012 7:06 am

Bottom line . . . mid major teams that run the pro-set offense struggle. The types of athletes that they can recruit are not physically dominant enough for it to be successful. That was my worry with the Chow hire, and it has proven to be true.

I don’t think we will have 4,5 star recruits knocking on our door, although I am hoping that we see better recruiting than recent years.

Everyone keeps waiting for next years QB. Our problems are much deeper than that. We need to get bigger and stronger up front on both sides if we expect to see even moderate success. Problem is, big, strong, good linemen that can run block are hard for teams like Hawaii to get.

  29. mo808 November 4, 2012 7:06 am

Good Morning Folks! The sun did rise today! A bit if a of a chill in the air this morning in Kailua and on the blog too eh?

  30. kev-1 November 4, 2012 7:07 am

Sad thing is, now that he played Higgins and Shutter, in Chow’s mind, he probably thinks, “oh well, I tried other QBs and we still lost, so I’m sticking with Schroeder.”

  31. kev-1 November 4, 2012 7:08 am

Anyone else notice that Schroeder didn’t congratulate Higgins on the sideline after the score like everyone else was? He was standing right in front of him.

  32. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2012 7:17 am

Well… the Fresno game went as expected. At least the Fresno coach showed some mercy. If Pat Hill was still there, Fresno would have run it up much worse.

    More injuries again… that stinks.

Friday, ESPN vs Boise St… yikes. At least Boise’s offense is nothing like the past several years, but their defense is very good. I fully expect Peterson to call off the dogs once its out of reach for UH

UH probably not score vs Boise St’s starters.

Prediction: BSU def UH 45-7 (UH will score a garbage time TD)

And to all still bashing Chow and his system… it ain’t getting much better for 2012, so stop getting worked up about it. 2013 will be much better as the youngsters get experience and get bigger/stronger over the offseason and a full recruiting class comes in. Chow has Dline commits for 2013 that will add size and depth to UH’s worst unit (next to WRs). Taylor Graham steps in next year and UH now can stretch the ball downfield, helping their very good RB corp. UH has several good looking freshmen playing, but just are undersized. I’ve said it before, most of these freshmen would be redshiritng this year under normal circumstances, but ue to lack of upperclassmen talent and injuries, they’ve been forced to play in2012.

To all demanding QB change, Chow isn’t going to change unless Schroeder gets hurt (which I can’t believe he’s still healthy with all the punishment he’s taken every game. He’s not changing because there are much bigger problems than the QB… Pass protection has been poor and the WRs are terrible (we’ve talked about this at length in the past). The main reason why Chows not making the change is because none of the QBs will be starting next year.

Believe me, if there was a better option at QB Chow would have made the change already. the problem is that Higgins, Shutter, and Graves can’t prove themselves worthy in practice. If you don’t prove you’re the best at your position on the practice field, you’re not going to start (that applied to all sports).

UH is going through a college version of the NY Jets QB situation. Everybody knows Sanchez is limited, but the backup hasn’t proven he can run the offense well enough to make the change.

  33. tommui November 4, 2012 7:20 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Safe journey ST!

The Oregon-USC game was entertaining and the Wahine winning last night was great!

Hope the game with BSU might change the season – got to have hope!

  34. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2012 7:29 am

Believe me guys… our team would look ugly even we had the old run & shoot. The run & shoot only works when the WRs are talented and the OLine can pass block. UH has arguably the least talented WR corp in the nation and the OLine pass protection has been poor. Graves would have started the season with the old offense but would be out with injuries by now. He can scramble, but he’s a small guy, and small scramblers rarely stay healthy for the entire season at the college or pro level.

  35. BKekoa ( 9th isle) November 4, 2012 7:34 am

Need to change da OC & QB! Nuff sedd…

Healing prayers for Edwards, Davis, Lefotu, Winchester-Makinai, Afusia and the rest of our Wounded Warriors.

So many are down on the team and the coaches. They are not going to roll-over and quit. They are going to give it their all in all phases of the game for the rest of the season.

Whatever decisions are made regarding personnel will be embraced by the team. Off season will bring reassessment and recruiting. We will have talent, skill and depth.

I will keep the faith and attend the games. I will cheer for the Warriors.

I hope there are enough of us to show the team we are behind them. No boos, jeers or taunts. I will respect the effort these men are putting out and thank them for their efforts. Mahalo to the team and coaches. Imua!

  41. 3-Prong November 4, 2012 7:54 am

I too have faith in the future, until then, coach must have seen the spark that higgins provided. For those subscribing to the coaches philosophy of “SS to the bitter end”, my response is why not try change, seriously, can it get any worse? Former players like Nate I, Lafaele and Arcineaux seem to also be in agreement to give change a try. Go Warriors!

  42. PolyMom November 4, 2012 7:55 am

Wow! You knew this would be an ugly year.

Lava you want the Warriors to turn around like UCLA? Well that would have been GREAT if we had the talent. We have no talent. How about blaming Coach Mack, Aranda, Rolo and all of those guys who left us stuck. Funny Mariota was not even invited by Rolo or Mack to the Junior Camp? Coach Chow has to work with what he has. You sit behind a computer and whine. I would really like to see you man up, go to practice and spout your thoughts to Coach Chow and his staff. He’s open, so show up! I expect lots of schollies to not be renewed. Period. No play, no stay.

And let me know when YOU have developed 4 Heisman candidates? you can bash Norm Chow all you want but his record speaks for himself.

    Go WARRIORS!

What have YOU Lava done for the football team?

  43. kev-1 November 4, 2012 8:22 am

    PolyMom,

I understand what you are saying, and by no means do I agree with Lava. But, don’t you think it is rather insulting to the players that we have to say that we have no talent? People are so quick to defend Chow and his reputation, but the fact remains that these same kids that we do have were on Warrior teams that were at least competetive.

I think there is talent. I also think that talent fits into certain systems. It is Chow’s job to win games. I understand the transition period, but there ARE things that Chow could be doing with his current players to at least put a better product on the field. Why wait until the game is out of hand to try another QB? There have been benchings at every other position except QB.

I don’t buy the lack of talent argument any more than I buy it any other year. Hawaii has similar talent as previous years, and will have similar talent in the coming years under Chow. The talent level is determined by the level of player that will choose Hawaii. And in my opinion I don’t see that changing.

Polymom, I respect your opinion a lot and admire how you constantly look out for the team. But in this instance I disagree.

  44. Da Punchbowl Kid November 4, 2012 8:29 am

Good morning Polymom! Go WARRIORS indeed! 😉

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid November 4, 2012 8:32 am

    Off subject –

Has anyone seen “Cloud Atlas”? Its Sweety’s birfday and we’re gonna take her to brunch and a movie.

    Back to Warrior talk.

  46. Dino November 4, 2012 8:35 am

remember that one good season coach mack had back in 2010, we were 10-3 and ranked #24 at the end of the regular season. former warrior alex green is having a great day so far with the packers.

  47. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 8:40 am

Of course next year should be a step up. I mean we can’t get any worse. We get healthy again, some new blood, a year experienced in the system. We should with all that said be much improved. The thing that I’m still concerned about is the QB. Reason being, everyone says Graham is the dude, when was the last time this guy took a snap under the lights? Schroeder has been the dude all year so far, so he’ll be a year wiser with the game experience… Likewise the defense is frikkin horrendous. The bodies come back healthy next year but will that really make a huge impact? I too, see that are problems all over the place with this team and I also believe it starts with the coaching.

  48. Shoko November 4, 2012 8:41 am

Saw the new Denzel Washington flick, “Flight” last night and it was pretty good. However, when it comes to opinions, whats one man’s treasure is another man’s trash.

Hmm, not sure I used that idiom correctly, but I think you get my drift.

  49. kkv3000 November 4, 2012 8:43 am

What is so discouraging to me is that we are seeing absolutely no improvement in either offense or defense after 8 games.

  50. Da Punchbowl Kid November 4, 2012 8:43 am

Thanks Shoko. Yes, you got it right. 😉

  51. Shoko November 4, 2012 8:44 am

When Graham was recruited by OSU, some folks were saying that he might be accident prone, since he was injured his junior and senior years in high school. Hope thats not true, but it does make you wonder if this proves to be true, who’s going to be the backup if he gets hurt next year. Schroeder?

  52. markazulu November 4, 2012 8:51 am

A lot of people are saying we dont have talent. That is false I think we have a great group of players and no ammount of stars can say otherwise Kellen Moore the QB that was great in Boise for the past 4 years was a 2 star recruit but GOOD COACHING from Chris Peterson and his group of assitants helped bring out the best of him. I understand its a new system but what is the excuse for Fresno St who has a first year head coach, a new system, had a losing season last year now have a 7-2 record. Now I believe Chow could get this season under the belt and its his first year I understand the losing record but i cant UNDERSTAND WHY WE ARE NOT COMPETITIVE at ALL and that is what bugs me id give him the benefit of the doubt if we were at least more competitive. It’s nothing more than poor coaching and poor execution which goes back to POOR COACHING the saying goes the biggest improvement is from week 1 to week 2 and throughout this season ive seen NO IMPROVEMENT at all and thats not no knock on our players just i dont think our coaches wanna change up THERE SCHEMES to suit OUR PLAYERS its very frustrating ill keep cheering and i will keep believing we can turn this around.

  53. Rodney November 4, 2012 8:56 am

Talent! What Talent! Our boys are getting

    beaten by talented opponents!

    I agree with Poly mom!!!!!

I’ll be at the game to support the team!!!!

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2012 8:59 am

    Kev-1,

I was joking yesterday that Chow could tell all the journalist and public “You know, I put Shutter in and he didn’t complete a single pass and that’s why SS is my QB…”

    Lol

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid November 4, 2012 8:59 am

    PB –

What you said is key – what is next year going to look like, after the players have a year under their belts in a new system and a summer to get bigger, stronger and faster? ‘

When I used to coach wrestling, for first year wrestlers the sport was so new to them, some would win few if any matches. Then the next season, a lot of those same kids would end up with only a couple losses and ended up being great competiters going forward.

Hope to see the Warriors get better, every game and every season.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  56. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2012 9:02 am

Can anyone shed some light and point out the improvements we have made since game #1?

Realistically, that is what we can expect to see when winning is out of reach.

  57. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 9:03 am

    DPK,

    Happy Birthday to the misses…

  58. kev-1 November 4, 2012 9:04 am

How can you say in one sentence that we have no talent” and then in another say “I’ll be at the game to support the team?” That’s not support. It’s insulting.

You’re ugly, but you’re my wife and I love you. Awww, how sweet of you.

  59. WarriorNY November 4, 2012 9:05 am

    Just a quick update…

Alex Green is quietly having a good game so far at half… 39 yards on 6 carries… Green Bay is up 14 so lets hope they run it some more in the second half and get Alex over that 100 mark… That would be awesome!

  60. kev-1 November 4, 2012 9:05 am

IWWTHM . . . (man it’s hard to shorten your name)

    sad, but probably true yeah?

  61. kev-1 November 4, 2012 9:06 am

IWWTHM . . . sorry that last one was referring to your #55

  62. kev-1 November 4, 2012 9:07 am

#57, give me some time. Maybe I can come up with something.

  63. WarriorNY November 4, 2012 9:08 am

I just want to see one change…

TARGET DARIUS BRIGHT… Every time the ball goes in his direction, good things will happen (or he’ll drop the pass) but of all the receivers, he has the talent to provide mismatches…

  64. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2012 9:08 am

    kev-1,

Yea especially since he made Shutter hand the ball off 3x in a row lol. Might as well run the wildcat 3x with Joey if the play calling is going to be that creative.

  65. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2012 9:12 am

I do agree with Chow that Deruyter (sp) and their OC were classy in calling off the bulldogs from the beginning of the 2nd half. It could have been 70+ points if they kept Carr in until the 4th.

Our DC has been a bigger fail whale than all coaches that are putting together our offense. I am very disappointed with Kaumeyer.

I mean saying we have no talent

We have a great group of Running Backs

Beau Yap looks like a playmaker and will be a key in our Front for the next couple years

Art Laurel has been good but he’s just getting injured like crazy

Mike Edwards has been exceptional an is our best all around athlete

Nequan Phillips has been having a good season

Paipai Falemalu the heart and soul of this defense is having a solid season

Our Offensive Line for playing 2 freshman, 1 sophmore, 1 junior has played ok

Will Gregory has been playing Good solid football and Joey Iosefa has been probably our most consistent player on offense

Schroder despite people questioning him as a starter NOBODY can question his Toughness

Its so fustrating though because our offense has NO RHYTHM at all this season and the only time they seemed to have a good rhythm going was the 2nd half of the USC game when the game was outta hand.

PolyMom, I challenge you to come to the next practice. I’ll hold my “Chow Sucks” sign, and you — standing away from me — can hold your “You Players Suck” sign.

I am shocked and offended that you would say they have no talent. I couldn’t disagree more. We may not have UCLA-like talent, but we aren’t playing in the Pac 10 either. We get blown out by the likes of Air Force (that just got blown out by Army).

I’ve gone to many practices over the years, as well as many of the high school games. I have a very good idea what these guys are capable of doing on the field. The record is what it is due solely to a lack of decent coaching. Stubborn old fuut with old school system, and inability to make any adjustments.

Would you care to tell us which players in particular you think suck? In your mind Graves must suck because he apparently isn’t good enough to get on the field. Did you know Graves is one of the most athletic guys on the team? I can’t think of a single player that has disappointed. It all falls back on coach old fuut.

Yes I mean what I say. Go look at the roster. Our talent is young. Don’t give me the players are reading this. Why? Cause most of them don’t. You guys for the last 6 weeks have been trashing the team. My point is, for lava if he lives there take a drive to Manoa and have your say. You folks post all kinds of stuff. But man up and go say it to the person you want to say it to. All these arm chair QBs for weeks have trashed this team it seems our players are young first and the rest aren’t getting this system. And this IS the SYSTEM Chow is going with. Like it or not!

That is MY point. If I got something to say, I go to the source. I don’t hide behind my keyboard and trash folks. Just man up and show up and have your say.

    Nuff said!

No can blame everyting on Schroader, but da buggah need some rest at times. I tink he gotta release da ball much sooner like Higgins did and he gotta be on target. He going get better once he knows he has competition.

I tink da coaches not placing players in da right positions to make plays. Time to start from scratch again and re-evailuate schemes and player personel.

What happen to using Sellers? Das on addah buggah dat can play.

Keep supporting our warriors! Now is da time day needs us more den eva.

  84. cocobean November 4, 2012 9:42 am

Watched the replay. Chow did put in a lot of “new” stuff but nothing that would fall into the “”creative” category. Really think Chow needs to reexamine his philosophy. Seems like he’s stuck on the idea that this how the “pros” do it.

Watching the Denver V Cinny game I see Chow using a lot of formations that Cinny uses. A mix of under center and gun formations. Pro offenses by in large tend to err on the conservative side. Execusion, matchups, establish a POWER running game….a keep the chains moving philosophy without exposing your QB by having him as a run option.

College offenses run the gamut from the pro style SEC to the run option military academies. Really feel Chow has to find a happy medium between his pro style philosophy and the reality of being a mid major COLLEGE.

I don’t think burning the mid night oil tweaking schemes and drawing plays that fit his philosophy will help put that much more points on the board. Chow should look outward rather than inward. He should be looking at the variety of offenses being run at this level and “borrow” elements that will update his view.

Chow needs a tweak in his philosophy more than a tweak in his schemes. Hey even Air Force and Navy are looking to the pass more to put points on the board. Coach we need points not strict adherence to a philosphy.

  85. markazulu November 4, 2012 9:43 am

Iwonderwhytheyhateme: yeah i feel you its a good stat to have but the way its been this season is tough. Its so funny last year the biggest complain was our special teams and this year our special teams is our strong point.

  86. PurpleMaple November 4, 2012 9:45 am

Ref article, by Damin Esper / Special to the Star-Advertiser; “”Said safety Derron Smith, “We knew that they were going to try to come out and establish the running game. Our front seven did a great job of limiting that and that just turns them into a pass team. Whenever you can stop the run early, that just makes the game a lot easier. It makes the offense one-dimensional.”” This says it all. They knew what Hawaii wouild do. Stop the run;force the pass (which Schroeder struggles with). And Chow did not know how to adust with a different look.

  89. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 9:51 am

    markazulu,

You would think that Coach Chow and his offensive genius could produce an effective offense that could move the ball but supposedly we don’t have the players to do so. You would think with his pedigree he could figure out the offensive woes and adjust to help Schroeder make plays but you don’t see that happening. You would think as smart as Coach is he could do some adjusting to put our players in a better position to put points on the board, but instead you hear things like, I’m going to kick myself for bad-playcalling or there were some bad decisions Schroeder made but it’s not his fault for throwing interceptions.

I’m not saying Coach Chow needs to change the base of what he’s trying to implement on the offense. He just needs to adjust to the strengths of the players he has. Injuries haven’t helped at all but there are ballers on this team. I’m not calling for Coach’s head to be chopped off but some of the decisions being made I do question.

  90. BaddaMo'oMan November 4, 2012 9:52 am

Enough Talent? BC is like da BCS computah sever, Das wat de all say wen da team is losing. Jus one addah excuse fo da critics to use. Plus da buggah is one fat lier, He talk about da players as if he know them personally. I been watching da practices majority of da time for more than 25 years and I rarely see dat buggah dea. So wen he say we no moa enough talent, he really doesn’t know because he’s hardly there.

At dis level my baddah, everyone is suppose to be good enough to compete. Da question is? How da coaches going utilize da talents on da team fo be competetive? Are de placing da players in the right places? in da right positions? are tey using them enough to be productive? or are they just taking up space on certain plays where they are less productive. Just because de recruited’em doesn’t mean de gottah play’em if de not ready yet. I seen guys dat was good players dat were’nt on scholly but still yet got cut from da team. Accurate player evailuation along with proper schemes is a key factor in being a productive and cometetive team.

I got no problem with you.

I just want folks to understand that our roster is young. Go read it. But for fans to keep insulting Chow it also insults the entire program. UCLAs turn around s that they are stacked with star recruits. Last night finally things clicked with people like Fauria. But Mack let p,ayers slip through the cracks. We all know it hurts. It’s heartbreaking for the fans. Here in Cali UCLA had 8 terrible years. USC beat the he’ll out of them year after year. But at least Slick Rick left them with good recruits and lucky they got back players like Sua Filo who was on his mission.

It just drives me nuts when folks have so much hate like lava. If you feel that way, let the Coach know. Folks here in Cali are wanting Monte Kiffen fired. Signs up everywhere. Some guy just payed 25K for a FIRE MONTE billboard. Folks just either let this young team grow. Or let Chow come back to the msinland to do his thing. The Kentucky job is avaliable and he applied for that one three years ago. Who knows some fans might get their wish. Go back to Rolo and Aranda if that’s what you guys want. Nuffield said.

  101. Shoko November 4, 2012 10:40 am

I think Pat Hill left DeRuyter some very good players. The past couple years Hill was recruiting players that would excel in the spread in hopes of mixing it up in his base pro-style offense. In that respect, can’t really compare Chow to Deruyter. Fresno’s OC admitted that going from a pro to a spread is easier than going from a spread to a pro. However, I will give props to DeRuyter to improving the Bulldog defense.

Too bad he wasn’t given another year. I always admired Coach Hill. On the brightside, as an O-line coach for the Atlanta Falcons, he might have a good chance of being a part of a Super Bowl team.

  102. Shoko November 4, 2012 10:41 am

Polymom, you want me to go all the way to California to tell Chow he sucks. I don’t have the energy for that.

Let me shoot you some love anyway. We all Warrior fans.

I agree with others – WE GOT THE TALENT. These guys can win, and here is the frustrating thing — the players know they can win even if the coach is clueless. That is why I used the analogy to UCLA. The teams had the same record year, and both went for coaches with NFL experience. UCLA apparently took the road less traveled, and we took the road to last place, and that has made all the difference.

I can’t even watch this team the coaching is so bad.

  105. Shoko November 4, 2012 10:47 am

I think Rocky Long has a good chance of being MWC Coach of the Year. Next in line would probably be Bob Davie if he can get the Lobos to a bowl game this year. DeRuyter if he can win the conference title outright.

In what world do you live in that you think Chow is going to be able to get 4-5 star athletes here with his offense averaging less than 10 points a game against mid-level talented teams.(I dont count kickoff returns, special team or defensive tds toward offensive scoring). If there are any 4-5 star athletes that want to play in this type of offense are going to play at USC, SEC schools, etc. Again, this argument that we dont have any talent is a joke. I dont remember anyone criticizing BRS, Ostrowski, Art Laurel, Clapp, Trevor Davis, etc. last year when we were putting 31 points a game on the board. Graves hasnt played a snap this year (which is complete insult how Chow has handled him) and he still played better against these opponents than Schroeder has. You dont win 22 games in 3 years with no talent. Chow’s resume was good 15 years ago, but his offensive philosphy is way outdated. Let him finish the year and let him go. No flexibility, adjustments, no desire to try to use the talent given him, just stubborn. Doesnt it bother you that a coach with SO MUCH experience is getting outcoached by ever other coach this year.

  109. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 11:07 am

Firing Chow is not the solution, cause we going backwards to square one again. Chow just gotta realize that the talent levels that a mid-major like us attracts isn’t the upper echelon type of guys. Yeah they can be relentless in recruiting and put more emphasis on it but the truth is those type of ballers want the bigger name, bigger fame, bigger exposure type of schools to go to. Why would a guy like Jesse Williams who no one knew about want to come back to UH after killing it at AWC and realizing his talents. He is now on the #1 team in the nation and didn’t even give a thought about coming back to UH who jumped on him first. He actually was looking at Oregon, than changed his mind once Alabama got into the picture. Look at Coach Gib, he is a relentless recruiter, do you see any 4-5 star players on the squad? What I’m saying is that Coach wants the bigger, badder type of player to fit his system but can he really reel them in? I look at the commits so far and don’t see that upper echelon type of player. Not saying that the players can’t get to that level without hardwork and dedication but it’s reality. Coach keeps saying he is going to chase championships and prepare guys for the NFL, but this season it isn’t going to happen. Do I believe he can turn things around… I don’t know, but I will have some faith and believe that he can. Like I said I don’t care too much about the wins or losses, I just want to see some respectable football being played. Right now we aren’t respected because like Fresno’s Coach stated he was using this game to give his backups some game experience which pretty much says he knew they were going to beat us silly.

  110. MauiSamurai November 4, 2012 11:07 am

We need our team to be competitive! We do have talented players to compete in our conference. What we do need is better coaching. Against FSU reserves we still struggled – we were out coached. No excuse on the type of coaches we have – all Chow’s hires. Time for him to make some tough decisions on which coaches to replace or reassign.

  111. madeinhawaii November 4, 2012 11:09 am

The team is getting blown out of the water… it’s the fourth qtr… most coaches put in their back ups to give them game time experience or to prevent further injury to their first team. I’ve seen very little of that this season prior to yesterday’s game. Why is that?

  112. Aaron November 4, 2012 11:10 am

Polymom, the difference between Kiffin and Chow is that Chow took a middle of the road team and turned it into possibly the worst team in the country. we aren’t just “struggling” – we might be the worst teams in the country! very few people are going to be okay with that, so don’t be so surprised when people are are upset.

everyone knows you’ve cast your lot with Chow a long time ago and there’s no way you could turn back, but if given a choice to “go back to Rolo and Aranda” I think a lot of fans would take that in a heartbeat (a lot of us never wanted those two to leave in the first place). If things turn around next year, then that would be pretty awesome and I’d be happy to see it… but I’m mentally preparing for things to continue to suck and for another buyout to be coming down the pipes in 2013…

  113. Chicken Grease November 4, 2012 11:11 am

Agree with GA Warrior with getting the “better” recruits — but, Chow’ll get some of ’em, you watch. He already got two goo ‘uns in the last few weeks.

At some point, UH will be concerned about any vast # (Grease just speculating here) of empty seats in the next few weeks.

But, the above two is what a Grease means when he says “Chow knows the stakes.”

Prosaic panic some of you. Let Coach Chow have his first year. You’re only gonna be “ahhhh, a sigh of relief. Thanks, Coach Chow.” Once he starts winning big games. Worse, you’ll think, “see? He listened to me.” Legend in your own mind. “Here’s a piece of gum, lemme show you how to chew it.” (Glengarry Glenross)

  114. Old School Dave November 4, 2012 11:12 am

So if many of you get your wish and Chow is fired after this season, who would you bring in to replace him? For that matter, who would be willing to coach at a school that fired its coach after one season? Miano? Rolovich? Siuaki Livai? John L. Smith?

UH = a “One and Done” school. Just curious to know.

  115. Shoko November 4, 2012 11:16 am

UH needs to go after the 4-5 star recruits that get into trouble and get kicked off the team. I think criminal defense attorneys would make great recruiters. 😉

  116. Aaron November 4, 2012 11:16 am

Rolo, Aranda, and Miano would have kept what was good from last season and attempted to correct the bad. They probably would have won at least 4 or 5 games, the games would at least be interesting, and attendance wouldn’t be piss-poor during a season where we are short on cash because of the conference change and where we are paying travel subsidies. In order for this Norm Chow thing to be successful, he HAD to deliver better than what we’ve gotten. UH cannot afford a throwaway season, and I mean that literally – it costs too much money. I blame Chow for not handling this season differently and the sooner he gets fired the better. I could care less about things being “better” next season. Chow’s lack of urgency or lack of creativeness to win sooner than later is the wrong fit for this program.

  117. Pauoa Boy November 4, 2012 11:17 am

    #108,

Exactly, no one said anything when these players were producing in the previous offense, but all of a sudden they aren’t talented enough to play in a different system. A player will adapt regardless and yes some may take a little more time to get the playbook memorized, but still doesn’t mean that all of sudden their talent is subpar to what it used to be, that’s just dumb.

  118. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2012 11:19 am

Michael Green is a friend of UH football. Let’s get him in as recruiting coordinator. Pick up the guys at the airport or prison in his $500,000 custom Bentley. Lol

  119. Aaron November 4, 2012 11:20 am

Old School Dave – don’t kid yourself, there are PLENTY of young and hungry coaches who would take the job in a heartbeat. there are PLENTY of coaches ready to come in and prove that they can build AND compete at the same time. They may be closer to 40 years old than 70 years old, but that’s a good thing.

A lot of it depends on who the AD is, but I don’t think they’d have trouble filling the position. at the very least, anyone can come in and go 1-12.

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2012 11:22 am

Did anyone hear Coach Chow reply to a caller on CTCS that he can’t get the same kinds of players he did at BYU? Hope this is not the case. I don’t think this offense will work without similar personnel.

    Lava

Okay I will agree we both got NFL Coaches. But Hawaii is a very unique situation. Let me say this when I went to the banquet last year I felt so bad, lots of the mainland boys families have no money. Parents never get to see them play. It was sad. I felt really bad for some of these boys. Recruiting is much much harder for Hawaii due to distance, we can’t just recruit at home. We have to get our okoles to Texas, Florida, Georgia and that side of the country. Recruiting here in Cali will get us a few. But UCLA and USC and the PAC 12 schools have a lock down on California kids.

Now you got the Sark, Kiffen, Tuiasasopo, Riley, Kelley all looking at the islands. We have to wait for Powell and his crew to go get what we can get. We have to show our high school kids and prove to them that YOU will be one of the fans in the stands. The one comment I get from my girlies friend who ate being recruited by Hawaii is WOW where’s the fans?

If our current players can not GET Chows system then they have to go. It’s just fact. Hey if a player get hurts more then once they have to evaluate that player. Let me say this, I sure would not want my guy getting cut from the team, but if you can not contribute, then that schollie has to go to someone who can. It’s just how big time programs run.

Yes we have 18 great players but our roster has room for 100 players. what do we do? Your thoughts? And we are plagued by injuries. Spring, summer and season ending injuries. One a career ending injury. So where fo we go from here.

Joker Phillips FIRED today. I know lots of you want Chow gone. So now what?

  124. Aaron November 4, 2012 11:28 am

Pauoa Boy – I totally agree. How does Scott Harding go from freshman all-american to falling off the face of the earth? Harding, Stutz, and Miah may not be prototype receivers for whatever offense Chow wants to run, but those guys could catch the ball in space and get yards after the catch – they’ve proved that last season. If used similarly this season, I’m sure they wouldn’t be struggling as much as they have been.

  125. Old School Dave November 4, 2012 11:32 am

Aaron: Good points. I have no doubt that there are many hungry (if not starving) coaches out there. I’ve heard that stories of how there are some very desperate and sad individuals at national coaching conventions looking for a job. Say you hire a young coach, how many years would you give him? One? Two? “You had better win at least ___ games in year one or else.” Not good for recruiting. Fire Chow now and that will also be used against UH in recruiting.

    Aaron–

Chow did some good things at UCLA. But Slick Rick held back. He was intimidated by Cheaty Petey. And that’s a fact. They all live in my neighborhood.

Funny was at the grocery store behind Kiffens wife when her credit card was declined. She through out, don’t you know WHO I am? LMAO!

Trust these Coaches not like Hawaii has the bank for a BIG TIME Coach. And Chow is BIG TIME working for cheap.

  128. Old School Dave November 4, 2012 11:39 am

Much has been made of the travel woes for UH. On the other hand, I would think that a lot of the local players, going on a 3-hour bus ride would be kinda fun.

I don’t know if you have a son on the team, But how will you feel if you know that the coach and his staff are doing ever thing they can to insure that some of our good kids fail so they can have a reason to take away scholarships next year. I suspect that will not set to well with you. So, please be careful as to how you put down these kids. They are under a lots of pressure from losing and being set up for failure by the coaching staff.

  130. Diogenes Sinope November 4, 2012 11:57 am

First off, POLYMOM has a relation on the UH football team who is being redshirted because of injury. Before he was injured, he was slated to be either first or second string on the D-line.

Harsh as it may sound, if the players are not what Coach Chow wants, there is not much you and I can do about it.

However, no matter how good someone is in practice, if that does not translate the same on the field, there are players who are lousy at practice but lucky (or productive) on the field.

  131. BaddaMo'oMan November 4, 2012 12:02 pm

Kaiser made a huge turn around when a coaching change was made. Pearl City, Waipahu, had the same results the last 2 years ago.

If you take all the players on both Farrington and the Kahuku squad and swapped the coaches for a year on both sides, would the same results apply? If Farrington had Kahuku’s players, would coach Randall Okimoto and his hui have what it takes to coach those athletes to be competetive? or If Kahuku’s coaches had all of Farrington’s players considering a double threat of RB Tyler Tumua and Amo Silva, would Kahuku be the same Kahuku team? If Leilehua’s Nolan Tokuda had this years Mililani Roster, would you think that Leilehua would be undefeated with QB Jared Morikawa?

In high school there are a hand full of mediocre players on most squads, and a hand full of them are competetive to compete. Coaching at this level is coaching and it plays a huge role in the success of a winning program. Sometimes talent cannot be coached, It’s a matter of placement and timeing.

Again at the college level, especially the D1 level, every athlete is suppose to be good regardless of there rank and star. Most will rank even 2*-3*, and that doesn’t mean that they can’t compete at a 5* level. Having the right coaching staff plays a huge role in the success of the utilization of athletes on the team. Coach Fred Von Appen was a very good coach and had a very credible resume before entering the UH program. Unfortunatly his staff wasn’t so great which led to the down fall of his 3 year tenture as head coach for the UH program.

If the kid needs to lose a schollie for not contributing for two years and it happens I would not be upset. Like Abe Markowutzs parents Abe was on the line. But they were willing to step up and pay to better the USC team. you have to embrace what is best for the team there are NO guarantees of retaining a schollie. It is a year by year thing. I might feel bad, but you have to face the facts and either play or pay. Can’t keep players on the team just to be nice. This is D1 football. Not tiddly winks. It’s a huge business for Universities. Hawaii must be self sufficient in their football program. UH can not afford to just let things ride. UH Manoa needs so much work. Their physical plant is in dire need of help. Students are mad. That being said, I got thick skin. And if you ate on a schollie, and you can’t play, then you have to give the Coaches freedom to release players and build some depth. That is one thing Hawaii has never had is depth.

Chow is the Coach. It’s HIS team! We have to respect the Coaches. No I don’t think he is trying to hurt the team. I know him. He loves Hawaii. He wants to elevate the team. I feel bad that you think Coach Chow is trying to destroy the team. He is an incredible man. A living legacy in college football. Please give Chow a chance, why aren’t you mad at Coach Mack for lack of recruiting?

Wow! How things change in just a couple of month. It’s Chow Time. Trust in Chow. Now the guy is getting no love. Just be patient, I just finished watching last nights game. For weeks everyone has been trashing Schroder. Okay he might not be that good. But what about your other QBs?

Like someone earlier posted a medical retirement is good for appearances. But being gracious about things if you are not able to contribute is just the classy thing to do. Hanohano went out with real class. I shed a couple of tears the day he announced his medical retirement. For these boys football is the road to education. Few will even be looked at for the Pros. Maybe one or two a year. This is about getting your college degree.

  146. kev-1 November 4, 2012 1:01 pm

What about the other QBs? Well, they actually did move the ball better when they were in. Shutter didn’t lead the offense to a score, Higgins did. Yes, they were playing in garbage time, but so was Schroeder in the second half. So there is a comparison there to be made.

  147. kev-1 November 4, 2012 1:01 pm

“Well who hired him?” Let’s kill him and burn him too!”

“Let’s get them all!” “We’ll burn their houses too!”

“Oh wait, maybe wasn’t him.” “He’s hurt!” “Let’s pray for him.”

  158. Derek November 4, 2012 2:12 pm

Shoko, since you have the line here’s my first prediction. Boise St. 56, Hawaii 3. Give the points, easily. UH is like in a depression. To get out of this mess, you need a new leader, ala Obama who had to restore the economy after the financial crisis. In this case, we need a new coach. It’s only been less than a year, but I can see already that it was a big mistake to hire Chow. It’s not so much the losses, it’s the way we are losing these games.

Not even competitive, games over by halftime, etc. The report card, exclusing Lamar who is an FCS team, Hawaii is averaging 15 points per game and giving up 48 points a game. You can argue that Hawaii is the worst FBS team in the country. Colorado is pretty bad too, but Colorado at least beat Washington St. which is a PAC 12 team. We are not going to get top tier recruits to run a pro set offense like Alabama or LSU. We don’t have the horses, period. Right now, we can’t even beat Navy, Army, and Air Force who we all play next year. With the run and shoot at least we had a fighting chance. I still say the spread offense gives us the best chance for success in the future. Hopefully the near future.

  159. lava November 4, 2012 2:20 pm

I’m not sure if Polymom believes in what she’s writing, or if she’s just sticking burrs under our saddles. If I understand her argument, the supposedly lousy players from the past are to blame for not carrying out Chow’s game plan, so they should lose their scholarships, and this will free up scholarships for Chow-picked players. That’s the solution? You think it is unreasonable to consider firing the coaches, but it is reasonable to consider firing 100 players? How does that instill confidence.

Chad Owens is now Mr. Canada. I attended his high school games. He was a squirt, but a stud. He didn’t even look like he should be playing in high school he was that outsized. But he was a gamer, even in practices. He doesn’t have the look of a talented guy. He’s slow, has small hands, and is prone to drops and fumbles. But his effort is always 100%, and he is passionate about football, and has about as much confidence as anyone I can remember. He made a name for himself at UH. Chad Owens likely wouldn’t even see the field under Chow, and if he did, his game would disappear like it seems to have for Harding and Miah. That says it all.

By the way, doesn’t sound like Polymom is actually listening to Chow. I hear him taking responsibility, which he should. My rants essentially agree with Chow — he is to blame — and press for a solution. Things will get worse under Chow before they get better.

You really think that LB out of Utah is going to make a better LB than Vele? Vele is a stud, and guys in Hawaii know it. If they see a misuse of talented guys like Vele, no way are the staying home, and I don’t blame them.

  160. lava November 4, 2012 2:26 pm

Ala Wai, I agree this forum is a bit of a monster tale, but what do you expect when game after game we are 30 point underdogs, and then we go out and fail to cover in a meaningless, boring, predictable football game. We have made a bunch of our opponents look invincible. Air Force was getting 10 yards a play on us.

If you have a solution to avoid this in the Boise game, let’s have it. The game has yet to start and we’ve been spotted 29 points. Should probably be 49 but team like FSU are content to just walk through the end of the game.

    Mr. Grease,

Where are you to lighten the mood on the blog?!!??

Hey there WarriorNY. Hope all’s relatively progressing on the East coast. Keep us informed . . . the actual news can hype up things more than they are. Be sure to tell those so concerned with providing electricity to the NY and NJ voting ‘sites to LEAVE the electrical/powere generators there for you folks to continue to use.

    75, 89, Sorta’ 95, 114, (sheesh, didn’t think so, but, I posted a LOT today; these are a Grease’s posts of today that he’s only mentioning[!]) . . . and # 127.

Lighten the mood . . . OK, here’s a joke. Sorta’ long, but, bear with a Grease:

After Sunday Mass, the attending priest makes an announcement to the congregation. “Friends,” he says, “this week, I managed to find many crates of bibles in our basement. Hallelujah!!! As you know, even after the many fundraisers we’ve held in order to pay the FINAL bill to the contractors who recently added another wing to our church, we’re still $6,000 short. I propose that we SELL the many bibles that I found recently! Now, I’ll need some volunteers to help do this. The church’s final bill is due in two weeks . . . we have exactly 600 bibles and, if we sell them for $10 each in two weeks, we’ll have enough money to pay this final bill for the church annex. Now, who wants to volunteer?”

One man from the congregation stands up, says, “Father. I’m the # 1 salesman at my job. With my know-how and reputation, I can help sell a lot of these bibles in NO time. I’d like to volunteer.”

Father looks at him, says, “Our first volunteer for this. God bless you and thank you, son. OK.”

Another man stands up, says, “Father. I work in the publishing industry. I KNOW what it takes to sell books! I’d like to volunteer!”

Father smiles, goes, “thank YOU, son! OK, how ’bout one more volunteer?” asks the priest.

    Lenny, the notorious town stutterer, stands up. “F-f-f-father, I-I-I-I w-w-w-w-would li-li-li-like t-t-t-to h-h-h-h-help s-s-s-s-s-sell th-th-th-th-these b-b-b-b-bibles.”

Well, the congregation begins to slightly groan, but — out of Lenny’s sight — Father motions his hand, urging the crowd to quiet down. The priest genuinely appreciates Lenny’s offer and says, “of course, Lenny. Please help us sell these bibles.”

The priests meets with all three men afterwards and has them each start with 100 bibles to sell. He gives each of them a key to the basement where the remainder of the bibles are stored. “When you’ve completed selling your first 100 bibles, just open up the basement, get another bunch of bibles and sell, sell, sell. Keep going to basement until there are no more bibles there. We’ll meet at the end of two weeks in my office and you can give me the money you’ve earned. God bless you my sons and God be with you in your task.”

Well. A few weeks go by and the day they’re to meet the priest finally arrives. The salesman is the first to show up. He gives father $1,000. He tells the priest, “Father. Selling these bibles . . . was tough, I must admit. I barely met the first quota of 100 bibles. I wanted to sell more. But, when I went to the basement, there were no more bibles. The others must’ve managed to sell the rest.”

The publisher shows up. He also gives $1,000 to the priest and tells Father, “yeah, actually had a tough time selling 100 bibles. I didn’t even manage to get to the basement to get more bibles to sell.”

All three men notice that Lenny hasn’t arrived yet and they all give a look of worry to each other. The priest tells the other two, “well, let’s give Lenny a few minutes, he . . .”

And before the priest can finish, Lenny walks ino the office calmly . . . and gives the priest $4,000!!!!! The priest and the two other men look at the money in astonishment. “Lenny!!!” the priest exclaims. “Is THIS the result of your bible sales? Did you end up selling your first 100 . . . and went to the basement to get the remaining 300 bibles to sell?”

    Lenny nods to signify “yes.”

The other three men look at each other, still astonished, and, finally, Father asks the same question on all three’s minds: “how DID you do it?!?”

    Lenny goes, “I-I-I-I-I w-w-w-w-went d-d-d-d-door t-t-t-t-to d-d-d-d-door ah-ah-ah-ah-and ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-asked who-who-who-who-who-whoever ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-answered th-th-th-th-th-th-the d-d-d-d-door, ‘d-d-d-d-d-do y-y-y-y-y-you w-w-w-w-w-want t-t-t-t-t-to b-b-b-b-b-b-b-buy a-a-a-a-a-a-a buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-bible o-o-o-o-o-or cah-cah-cah-cah-can I-I-I-I r-r-r-read one t-t-t-t-to you?'”

Yes this is Chow team and he can do what ever he wants. But he is the the one being paid and make calls to win games. But like i said every coach has good and bad in him.

But this year remind me of last year where lots of players being hurt. But we won some games. But with new O and D both being new this should be a learning year for both sides of the ball. Give Chow another year. But if the injury keep coming like this year. Don’t look for to many W.

I bet 50 percent of the team is injured. We have serious problems having so many Wounded Warriors. What are you young to do? Fire the S&C Coach? You have to put some of the blame on the players to. Are they training during off season? Good diets and nutrition? Still eating white rice? You want to win big, then the players have to care foe their bodies. Watching the game again today, the O Line let Schroeder get sacked 8 times in the first half. Okay if your QB has no time If the QB has no time in the pocket how can he do his job. This is a TEAM sort. You know the QB always gets it. You folks love the QB when he is winning. But hate him when he loses. Was not that impressed by any of the QBs.

Now what? Why s all Schroeders fault? Why is it not the O Lines fault. They are supposed to protect him.

Players sitting on the bench not paying attention. Serious! They should all be standing. Now we are dealing with a psychological and physical Team who needs to come to grips and get with Chows program. If not let him go find his players. Then in three Yeats you can kick Chows ass.

We have plenty of returning players and this board has supported them. Last year was a frustrating 6-7 season because it could easily have been 9-4. Hasn’t been comments bashing players, only questioning Chow’s head scratching loyalty to Schroeder. The frustration with Chow is pretty mild compared to what you would read elsewhere. How do you think Chow would be playing in the SEC? Hawaii wasn’t anyone’s Lamar last year.

Boise is not an offensive juggernaut. Traditioanlly they’ve been solid in the three phases of the game and capitalizes on other teams mistakes. I feel better about playing Boise at home than playing FSU on the road.

We have a punchers chance if we minimize our mistakes both physical and mental.

Coach Chow, take a look at Colorado’s offense. They’ve scoring challenged much like we are. While CU may use different schemes and run different plays, their coach is your philosophcal twin. This is his second year. CU has not improved from last year. A power running game to set up the pass type offense doesn’t work at the vast majority of colleges.

The O needs something radical to be more competitive. If I weren’t a retired armchair QB, I’d say formulate a game plan where all snaps are taken in some kind of gun formation. You still can maintain the run/pass balance you want. But since I’m a retired armchair guy, I won’t suggest it.

Actions speak better than words. Like I said before, Coach Chow has to figure it out. If Higgins could score against the Bulldogs 2nd string defense when SS couldn’t, what does that say? Aren’t you supposed to play the person who gives you the best opportunity to win? If Coach Chowder continues to say that “SS is his guy”, then you will know that it’s not about winning. It’s about him staying his course. Yes he is the coach. But I and my Ohana do not buy this idea that our players aren’t good enough. Over the years, HAWAII fans were used to the coaches making the most of their player’s talent. Coaching them up combined with talent and sometimes luck resulted in wins. And now our guys aren’t good enough.

  176. Warrior in Georgia November 4, 2012 6:25 pm

We didn’t need Jones and Mac to do alot of recruiting, our winning and our offense took care of that on its own. It was common knowledge that June had hundreds of tapes sent to him from kids all over the nation after watching our offense and team on the ESPN channels and Game Plan. Heck, even a kid from Georgia wanted to play so bad for June and Jerry after watching them, his dad drove to Jerry’s house here in Georgia to drop a tape off and told him his son could go other places but wanted to play for him and June in Hawaii, 3,000 miles away. Who is watching the games on TV now and gonna say, “Hey, I want to play there”. Please, get a clue.

Question: Who thought that the falling attendance of fans and students last year was because of Mack and the system we were running? So much so they decided to fire Mack and hire Dr. Chow to do a complete overhaul.

We are now here because Upper Campus thought this was the solution. I always thought the physical plant was the problem. JJ fought this for nearly 10 years. Even now our facilities are at FCS level not FBS and certainly not BCS.

Recruits from high schools are impressed with the big time facilities. Do you remember your high school locker room compared to College?

Dr. Chow will not succeed until we get someone to pimp out the lower campus crib.

Did you see Iowa States facility yesterday during their game? Some should ask Sean Schroder for a comparison of Duke’s facilities vs. UH. They spent $50mill a few years back for a football facility.

Dr. Chow will not be able to succeed unless top local recruits stay home. We will lose some, yes but need to keep the Kahuku, St. Louis, Farrington, OI kids. home.

This year was surrendered last year, when we had the AD fire one coach for $600,000. Hired a new one for $500K and saw two top level coordinators leave.

This year was written off when we abandoned all semblance of “new age” football in favor of the pro set. Someone on Upper Campus thought this would quickly reverse things.

    I “Wonder” who.

Next year is now being built on a hope and a prayer and smoke and ashes . Its bringing 90some kids up to speed on a new system.

Come to the game, party on. Hope for the best. Hit the beachball. Eat the ice cream!

Give the seniors a real Senior Night, and walk off into the night for the Stanley and B-Ball.

I remember Rolo’s favorite trick play, “Bumbai you learn!”

Please elaborate, kev-1. Exactly what was said and whom?

  191. kev-1 November 4, 2012 8:32 pm

There are a lot of young, talented (although there are some that don’t think so) players that are learning to play and getting valuable playing time. In the coming years, we will probably be saying there are a lot of kids doing the right thing. M. Jackson, Fonua, Jerrol-Garcia, etc.

  192. el burro sabio November 4, 2012 8:34 pm

    MIH,

Yes, Lister and Gregory, although Gregory seems to be somewhat injured, and Iosefa, so some parts of the running game work. The rollout passes to Lister in the flats seem to be working.

The first instinct when everything seems to be going wrong is to change everything, and that is wrong because it’s just not possible that everything is wrong, and then you end up changing things that work and make them worse. Since I don’t have the games recorded I can’t run the play back and forth 20 times to figure out what works and what went wrong. Others are much better at picking out what went right or wrong just seeing the play once, and that’s why I’m asking.

  193. kev-1 November 4, 2012 8:36 pm

Grease, I may be exaggerating a little. But Kekaula brought up that there are a lot of people on the Warrior Beat that are angry, and asked what we are angry about. ST said that there are a lot, and that he didn’t realize a mouse could be used as a weapon. Then Kekaula followed up with a comment about how people need to realize that a new coach, new system, won’t be easy.

I just want to be clear to my fellow posters, that I do realize it won’t be easy and haven’t given up on Chow or the future. Although, I would like to be the QB coach. HAHAHA!!!

As stated before, POLYMOM has a relation red-shirted this year. If it were not for an injury pre-season, he would have been part of the 8-member rotation on the D-Line.

The previous AD wanted another coach for the football team but the Upper Campus people and probably the $$ downtown people wanted Dr. Chow.

MRC was impressed that Dr. Chow had a Ph.D. and all the football credentials.

To criticize him as being too old – alzimiers, brain dead, too rigid – seem to forget in their advocating Mitt for President – that the Governor is the same age as Dr. Chow! 🙂

I would guess that POLYMOM has (unfortunately) the right understanding of the game of football and the unfortunate consequences if a player is not to the coach’s liking.

Make no mistake, I really feel for people like David, who I think are being badly treated. Unfortunately, right or wrong, they don’t fit in to the thinking of the coach.

I suppose one example was UH had a QB that everyone was terrific but the then-coach decided to go to a “Hula-T” formation and that QB transferred to Portland State and did extremely well. Wonder what ever happened to him? 🙂

  196. madeinhawaii November 4, 2012 8:42 pm

    el burro sabio

Sometimes, the problem is… we don’t know what the play is. I mean with the RnS…practice and discussions of the playbook were so open that we knew what was going on as it unfolded. Under Chow, it’s an everybody guess… Was it execution? Were our players overwhelmed?

  197. madeinhawaii November 4, 2012 8:45 pm

And defense… we give up too many big chunks… but why?

  198. kev-1 November 4, 2012 8:46 pm

I don’t want to pound on the Graves drum any more than it already has been, but why isn’t the coach being asked about that? It comes up here pretty often, and the last we’ve heard from ST about it was that he was a full time receiver. Now he apparently doesn’t even suit up and is on the scout team defense. Is that true?

I am not calling for him to be QB or anything like that. I just would like some kind of report, out of curiosity, as to why a former starter has been seemingly relegated to the scout team. I’d like to hear from someone who knows, not someone who just wants to offere their jaded perspective about it.

  199. kev-1 November 4, 2012 8:56 pm

It was also good to see JHT making some plays again. I expect big things from him from here on out.

  200. Old School Dave November 4, 2012 8:56 pm

June Jones had his chance to win the starting QB job under Dave Holmes in 73 after transferring from Oregon, but he got beat out by another 4-yr QB transfer from SMU named Casey Ortiz. It was the following year when Holmes was forced out and Larry Price was named HC and they went to the Hula-T with sophomore QB Alex Kaloi which resulted in Jones transferring to Portland State. Coaching changes, changes in offensive and defensive schemes often result in players transferring.

  201. bowtime November 4, 2012 8:59 pm

Good coaches will be able to adjust and get the best from each player. Even if you do not have the best players or athletes (which I believe we DO have some great athletes) a great coach will be able to extract and stimulate the best to come out. He or she needs to be able to know that there different ways to achieve this goal. Some need a kick in the butt while some need praise or a different way to push.

Chow seems so set in his ways that he does not look at the big picture on how to get to this goal. Yes I he has a great resume but the past is the past. Would he have had a great resume if he didn’t have great athletes to coach. Could he have done what they did at BYU or USC without those great quarterbacks. Could he have done it with a mediocre quarterback? Could he have extracted wins from the likes Rolovich and Dan Robinson? I say NO.

He may be a good OC when there is great talent but with mediocre talent he cannot does not have ability move them into an extra gear. He was never been a Head Coach and that is the difference from being an OC is that now you have run EVERYTHING. He is better up in the box without the responsibilities of a HC. He is not a motivator which the Head Coach needs to be.

A different more hungry coach would be pushing for the wins not resting on his laurels and saying it will come. WE HAVE SOME GREAT ATHLETES (@ Polymom) and we need to use them and make them a team. Mr. Chow unfortunately will not be able to find that out with his stubborness. I do hope that I am wrong. We will not get better next year and we will NOT get any good recruits, who wants to go to the worst team (1-11). Love you my team forever but this coaching SUCKS.

Just a reality check. You might have had three Heisman quarterbacks on your teams in a past life. You might have all the coaching credentials. But, this doesn’t matter any more. Youv’e got to produce. Anybody ever thought that this might not be a good fit? And I’m not talking about instant gratification either. Wrong chemistry on offense and defense. Our defensive coordinator being totally outclassed by the opposition. And I don’t blame our players either.

lots of i know how chows hehehe 🙂

someone mentioned SS could not score against fresno’s reserves but higgins can, what does that tell you???

only thing that tells me is that if you left SS in he might have scored too OR, who says higgins would’ve done ay better against fresno starters???

really, we are gonna base qbs on how they fare against third and fourth stringers???

we all frustrated, but i think the difference is some people post with logic and some post with emotion.

the number 1 thing is the D must hold to keep us in games. it’s a progression. D is banged up, they cant hold, and we get outpaced. like i said before, once upon a time our O was our D, now our O is our O and our D is our D. if the D and the O not working its gonna be a long season….simple. prior to this, if the D not working, the O would keep us in. It needs to be the opposite now.

go back and check the scores. if the O put up 21 maybe even 28 in each game we’d still only have 1 win. and people would shift the majority of blame to the D instead of singling out one player and one coach.

i also said before if the D has a goal of no more then 3 td’s per game, it may be enough to keep the O in it and keep fighting for a W

it has to be a joint effort between the O and D not a competition between which qb did better against 4th stringers.

My girlfriend and myself have built and marketed more than 10 websites. We both believe that per pixel advertising can be very rewarding if you get your pixels on the website early enough.

We’ve recently been introduced to co-operative pixel advertising (Google it). We’ve invested a little money in this new website advertising idea and so far it has been a good investment.

If you have the money to pay per-click, then you can’t go wrong with Google Adwords. It is just difficult to fight with the big name companies when you are bidding on each click.

One very underrated website to advertise on is Facebook. You can choose exactly which sub-section you want your ad to display on, this can be very powerful when you have a very specific taregt group you want to advertise to.

    I’ll stop rambling now. Peace.

Good point. And Higgins actually used *initiative* to find Bright on those completions. This wasn’t an OC spoonfeeding plays. This was a QB reading defenses, spotting favorable matchups and exploiting those matchups. That’s *leadership*. If coach Chow can’t see — or appreciate — the diff between practice apple-polisher and gametime gamer, then he deserves to go down. Fast.

  228. oahu resident November 5, 2012 6:39 am

Chow is a square peg in a round hole. A dinosaur whose offensive system is obsolete. Even the very talented teams are using variations of the spread option, run and shoot, hurry up offenses, etc. Same goes for the defensive coordinator. Why bring in a NFL guy to run the defense, when very few teams run NFL type offenses. Obviously the guy doesn’t have a clue regarding stopping option offenses.

  229. gobows November 5, 2012 6:51 am

UH’s statistical rankings: 104th passing yds (188.1 per game), 109th rushing yds (114 per game), 107th points scored (20.3 per game), 122nd points given up (42.6 per game). in summary, UH can’t throw, can’t run, can’t score, and have the worst defense in the nation.

if mack wasn’t so hard headed and had allowed rolo to modify/evolve the offense like he wanted to (multiple backs, tight ends) this team wouldn’t be THE WORST IN THE NATION. mack and chow are examples of the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” the cement has dried and they are set in their ways. that doesn’t work in football, the game has been evolving since it was invented.

This past weekend, I watched the movie “Rudy”. This guy fought and scraped to first get into Notre Dame and through sheer determination, made the football practice squad. He spilled his blood and guts for just the chance to dress for one game. The movie ends with him getting that chance. Putting on the jersey with Pride, leading the team out of the tunnel, getting in for 2 plays at the end of the game and getting ultimately getting carried off the field. Everyone matters.

Would really appreciate your, or anyone else’s, insights into what those things are and why so I can better understand the game.
