Everything’s set

Greg McMackin said the coaches have scripted every drill for the 15 practices of spring training. The first practice is at 4 p.m. Monday.

* * *

And there’s a happy ending. Richard Torres has agreed to give up No. 11, enabling Inoke Funaki to finish his career with that jersey number. They’re both Kahuku High graduates, by the way.

* * *

Chris Williams will serve as the interim video coordinator. Williams is a former UH linebacker. His most memorable act was in front of the cameras. Before a statewide television audience during the softball team’s Senior Day ceremony, Williams proposed to Kaulana Gould.

* * *

After a very brief experiment at running back, Bryce Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea is back at quarterback.
“That’s where my calling is,” said Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea, a former Castle standout. “That’s where I belong.”
He missed all of last season after suffering a torn ACL. He said he is healthy now.
He joins a crowded field. The top of the depth chart goes like this: Greg Alexander, Brent Rausch and Shane Austin. Those three will get the majority of the reps in team drills.
Limited work will go to Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea, Steele Jantz and Bryant Moniz. In fall training, three freshmen join the competition.
“I don’t mind,” Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea said. “It’s actually going to push me into doing my best, being up against guys who also are hungry for that position.”

that’s a lot of QBs… Then there is Inoke who may return if SB Or RB doesn’t pan out…

I hope Kazz and Rob25 made it to the baseball game.
I got there at 5 p.m. to drop off the tickets, and then I realized … whoops, I forgot the tickets at the office.
    So I zipped back.
Didn’t get to the box office again until about 5:30.
Fortunately, the traffic was light because of Kuhio Day.
Which brings me to this question: How come Kalakaua doesn’t get a day?

  4. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2009 6:32 am

d1shima get a pair of tickets for tonight, but I can’t remember who the other winners were last week.
They can call me at 256-0223, and we can figure out the next two days.

  5. Garret March 27, 2009 6:37 am

Like BigWave said, that is a LOT of QBs. I don’t know how many reps Bryce Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea will be able to get, but I hope that he’s fully recovered from his injury and does his best. The freshmen QBs will make the position really crowded in the Fall, so Bryce needs to impress the coaches in the Spring if he wants a shot at getting reps in the Fall.

BSU is moving their opening game to Thursday. It would be really good for the WAC if they beat Oregon, so I’ll cheer for them that week. And then I’d like for the WAC teams (especially UH!) to beat BSU to show the conference is really strong.

The Broncos are still set to open the 2009 season at home against the University of Oregon, but the game is tentatively set to move from Sept. 5 (Saturday) to Sept. 3 (Thursday).

This Oklahoma recruit might have thrown away what looked to be a bright future in football…he hasn’t even started college yet and he’s put Oklahoma on the defensive. His high school might kick him out and I doubt Oklahoma wants him to show up.

Justin Chaisson, a defensive end who recently signed to play at Oklahoma, made his first court appearance Thursday in Las Vegas after his arrest on several felonies that stem from an alleged attack on his ex-girlfriend.

The girl told police Chaisson punched her in the ribs and drove her to the desert before pulling her out of the vehicle. She said he then placed a screwdriver to her neck and threatened to kill her.

“Mr. Chaisson mentioned that he has his son in anger management classes tomorrow, March 18, 2009,” the report states. “Mr. Chaisson also mentioned that his son has 53 days left in town before going to Oklahoma for a football scholarship.”

  8. BigWave96744 March 27, 2009 6:46 am

wasn’t it mentioned that Shane and Steele might get scholies soon? If so come fall that would make 8 QB’s on scholie. But I assume 1 or 2 may be asked to greyshirt.

  9. Garret March 27, 2009 6:46 am

When Aloha Stadium replaces its surface, I wonder if UH could sell pieces of the current surface as a fundraiser?

Before the 2009 football season, Texas will spend $400,000 to install FieldTurf, a synthetic grass used by 67 other NCAA Division I-A schools. On April 5, UT will have a one-day sod sale that coincides with the orange-white scrimmage and the Texas spring football jamboree.

Fans can buy a 12-inch by 12-inch square of grass for $20. There will be 57,600 available for purchase, and the sod squares will be distributed starting an hour after the scrimmage concludes.

If Texas sells all the turf squares, the school will take in $1.152 million, which will cover the cost of the new field with lots of green left over.

  10. Garret March 27, 2009 6:48 am

    BigWave,

It was mentioned that they might use Steele at other positions–I think he was on the list for TEs even. I would be surprised if all 3 QB recruits started in the Fall, that would really make it tough for them to get reps. But the recruits have to be willing to grayshirt….

  11. BigWave96744 March 27, 2009 6:49 am

when Josh Rice is done after this fall, Jake Heun should wear #47 for his last year and be known as AK47

  12. Garret March 27, 2009 6:50 am

Is this a first step for Chris Williams to get the video coordinator position or are they just having him fill in before they hire the permanent person? If he’s one of the candidates for the position, then filling in now would seem to give him an advantage.

  13. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2009 6:55 am

    Garret:
I think it’s the first step in his candidacy.

Interesting chart of NFL minimum salaries. For the Warriors who make it to the active roster as rookies, their minimum salary will be $310k. For 2nd year players, their minimum salary will be $385k, and it goes up for each year of experience.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid March 27, 2009 7:34 am

    Good morning all!

How does the current number of QB recruits compare to coach Jone’s days? He usually had just as many, IIRC.

Once again, I have to believe that out of all of those recruits, there should be at least a couple of guys who would be very good at running the “O”.

Is Coach Shaw doing anything with the O – line guys yet?

  27. Garret March 27, 2009 7:35 am

For the NBA, minimum salaries for rookies next season will be $458k and 2nd year players have a minimum salary of $736k.

    http://www.lpgascoring.com/leaderboard.html

Through seven holes Michelle Wie is currently +3 in today’s second round. And +4 for the tournament. Having started the day from the back nine, she is now playing the 16th hole. With the probable projected cut at +4 she has to maintain par the rest of the way if she wants to play on the weekend.

On yesterday’s round (from the Arizona republic)

Michelle Wie, who drew huge galleries in 2004 and ’05 at Superstition Mountain, appeared to have the biggest crowd following her Thursday. Wie, playing this year as a tour member for the first time, missed two short par putts over the last four holes and shot 1-over 73.

    from -AP

Michelle Wie is back on the Tour for the first time since the SBS Open at Turtle Bay in Hawaii.

“The course is in good condition,” she said. “I played here on Sunday. From Sunday to now it’s been a great improvement. The fairways are in good condition. It’s a little deceiving because it’s brown in some spots, but the course is in great condition. It’s a really great track.”

Wie said she’s loving life as a student at Stanford.

“This is such a great time in my life,” she said. “For six months, I’m a golfer and I hibernate and become a hermit and think about golf. At college, I feel like I’m just a normal 19-year-old. I feel like I have a great variety in my life.”

    from the sports network-

The 19-year-old college sophomore, who earned her tour card through Q-school last year, took second place at the season-opening SBS Open in Hawaii. She hasn’t played competitively since.

“I felt like it was a hard day out there, with the wind and everything. I felt a little bit rusty,” said Wie. “I made a couple of stupid errors, but overall I played pretty solid.”

Note-The wind was howling at 40mph in yesterday’s first round, I’ve read… Don’t know how it is so far in the second round.

Looking at the leader board from the first round it’s very noticeable that the women golfers from Korea are doing well.

But JD, while on personal busines, should still drop by and vist his MVB team in Irvine.

He should at least buy them a PRE-GAME MEAL.

According to ST, MVB guys are sleeping 3 to a room; and NO pre-game meal.

MVB team is one loss away from being eliminated from playoffs.

JD should cut his salary too.

Re: No-Hitter against UH Baseball team last night

Cody Wheeler, the pitcher for Coastal Carolina, was getting into a quick rhythm between pitches. As soon as the ball was thrown back from him from the catcher, he was ready to throw the next pitch. I was wondering how come the hitters didn’t do stuff to throw him off?? Get into the batters box, then step out or just take your time getting into batters box. The hitters were helping him keep his rhythm.

Similar to basketball, if the opponents are an up tempo team, you have to slow down your game to not play into their hands.

first the site gives a (#)=player started on back 9 next to Michelles name

and as I reported, so when I look I think if she’s at the 16 hole and still has the front nine to play ( and that was less than an hour ago). So now I look again, and she’s done with the second round. How confusing is that. Anyway, she shot a 76 and is +5 for the tournament. And is unlikely to make the projected cut of +4, although if miraculously all the remaining second round golfers completing the second round shoot higher score it’s conceivable that she could squeak in, but I wouldn’t count on it.

yup, i agree with ya stretch.

they should have pulled the old “fake the sore leg timeout to mess up the pitcher’s routine trick” or the “argue the strike zone to the point of near ejection routine” or the “crowd the plate and try to lean into the pitch bait job just to get on base and mess up the pitcher (heck we have enough lefties).” well, thats what we were thinking during the telecast.

sometimes they are in a warp zone and don’t have that gamesmanship of old. need to learn from the old guys.

Unfortunately the current Aloha Stadium turf is not the carpet-like kind that can be pulled up and cut into squares. The old turf was like that but the current surface has a base layer with the long “blades” of grass which are held in place by a layer of rubber granules called infill. The only way to sell it and keep it together would be in boxes or pans. Speaking of the new turf at Aloha….I hope they get the kind that they got a Roosevelt….it has the rubber granules too, but it looks much better than field turf and the granules seem to stay in place better and don’t get into your shoes as much.

that lefty was crafty as well. he knew how to vary the velocity, vary the location, vary the pitch selection, used several grips on his fastball, and had great location.

From reading the posts, I gather the CCU pitcher must have been really poised, focused, and in control. Hard to throw that kind of pitcher’s rhythm off. I suppose that’s why he was the starting pitcher.

If it counts as an official visit, is it worthwhile for them to come over for only an afternoon?? Isn’t regular visits 2 days?? If they took another visit their Senior year, does that count as another visit, so they would have 2 visits to UH??

If so, I think there might be a lot of Juniors who might want to reconsider attending.

My guess is he’d ditch us if he came to UH.

OK, gang here is what the article says:

“…..High school coaches were asked to nominate their top prospects to attend the event on campus, which counts as a recruiting visit.”

Article goes on to say that Coach Mack expects 150-200 players and their parents. Parents in attendence is definitely a winna, in my books, as they can really make good observations which hopefully leads to making UH the choice for their sons.

  108. Garret March 27, 2009 12:34 pm

the writer pointed out that anyone who attends will be counted as an “official visit” to the school.

This means that the player can go on 4 official visits as a senior? Who will keep tabs on who attended? How will the NCAA keep track of athlethes who attend “jr” days across the country?

    A-House,

The person who wrote that article *really* worded that misleadingly, as it would be reasonable to come to the conclusion that you came to. However, going to Junior Days does NOT count as the official visit that a recruit can take once to a school.

I think that this problem is because UH didn’t do Junior Days in the past and the writer didn’t do enough research to explain the issue properly. Here is some additional information about Junior Days:

    1. Some recruits go to more than 5 Junior Days, there is no limit to the number of Junior Days a recruit attends but there is a limit to official visits a recruit can take.

    2. Universities can have hundreds of recruits attend Junior Days (like UH will) even though they are limited to a much smaller number for official visits.

    3. Recruits attend Junior Days *and* go on recruiting visits 6-12 months later to visit the school again before NLI day. This happens at Texas every year, this happened with recruits for schools ranging from LSU to SMU last year, and it is all perfectly legal. Recruits pay their way to the Junior Day so it isn’t considered an “official” visit in the eyes of the NCAA…maybe just in the eyes of a reporter who isn’t clear on the rules.

    4. Many schools have 2 Junior Days and recruits could actually attend both if they wanted to…at least I’ve heard that is what has happened on some occasions in the past. Schools like Texas are bringing in Sophomores to their 2nd Junior Day (since their recruiting is almost done with the Juniors), and those Sophomores will attend the Junior Day the following year as Juniors. And then they will go on their recruiting visit after their senior season is over.

    5. Schools tend to get a fair number of commits from recruits that attend their Junior Days. They then bring the commits for their official visit at the same time as other recruits they are trying to get to commit. The already committed recruits can bond with the uncommitted recruits and be very effective recruiters for the school. This is another reason how Junior Days can pay off for schools.

    6. Because recruits pay their way to the Junior Day, this is an extremely inexpensive way for schools to recruit! This can cut down on the number of recruiting visits the schools need to pay for, which is very important at schools with limited recruiting budgets like UH. I’ve been talking about Junior Days for years, well before this blog even existed, and am glad that it is finally happening at UH. JJ had a Junior Day last year at SMU and already had a Junior Day this year, so I’m guessing there was some other thing (HF? facilities? budget? no recruiting coordinator?) preventing him from doing this while he was at UH.

This was probably way more information than anyone would want to have about Junior Days. If I hadn’t seen how effective they can be and how they actually saved schools money, I wouldn’t care as much.

I believe in multiple sources of information and we get both papers at work M-F. Collection of data from multiple sources best to arrive at a good decision ( I think that’s what lecturers were trying to say in intelligence shcool).

Interesting contrast in the beat writers.

  110. Bulla March 27, 2009 12:35 pm

    A-House,

Unofficial visits are limitless because it is on your dime. Official visits are the ‘real thing’ because the school pays for everything from Point A to Point B. Which leads me to my next point, the cost-effectiveness of offering trips to Hawaii kids. The travel costs are higher per visit, and you could get 3 California kids for the same money.

just sharing the process so that families realize the investment that the schools make in your son and how we should respect them for doing that. it’s not a shell game, but it is real business for these schools. so when we have an incident like a student who takes the offer of a trip but then disrespects the coaches there by telling them he had not intention of playing there, that makes it tough on future kids to get off of the rock.

    just my 2 sense

    roysan16,
as of now, she is in the cut line at tie for 68th. with that being said, anything can happen, many golfers still have to finish. the reason why i said she has a good chance is that this tourney is the lpga. after the top 20 players or so, there is not much talent on lpga which is why the cut line fluctuates so much. It is rare to find the cut line on the pga change much because the pga tour has greater talent from top to bottom. whether or not she makes cut, her goal must be to win, and she has the talent to win this year easy, like i said before, the lpga is weak. compared to most lpga women, she has size and distance advantage in her favor. compared to most pga men though, she has no advantage.

  114. Garret March 27, 2009 12:42 pm

A storm hit LSU and damaged a portion of their campus. Their indoor practice facility was hit pretty hard, which will force them to scramble with their spring practice plans.

When LSU football coach Les Miles walked into his indoor practice facility Thursday morning, an exercise bike sat in the middle of one end zone.

How’d that get there? The force of the violent storm early Thursday morning had blown open two service doors on the west side, with the bike getting pushed through one of those openings by the barrage of winds that swept through in the early morning hours.

More significantly, much of the facility’s roof got peeled back and twisted, with the underlying insulation pulled out and strewn around the area.

With those tarps down, the damage had an immediate effect, because LSU had to halt midway through a spring practice because of rain and lightning. Usually, LSU would have trotted inside the facility and resumed practice.

Segments of the fencing next to the entranceway of the football complex had been blown out. Plus, tile above the football operations offices had been pulled away, and a tree in the middle of the parking lot in front of the complex’s entrance had been snapped in two. Miles said light poles were damaged by flying debris.

It sure sounds like the 49ers interview players differently than the other NFL teams.

Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford said his meeting with the 49ers included a psychologist who persisted about the impact of the divorce of Stafford’s parents when Stafford was in high school. According to Stafford, the psychologist told him as if it sounded like he had “unfinished business” concerning the divorce. Stafford said no, and then said he felt if he should be wondering how much he was being charged by hour for the psychoanalysis. Stafford compared it to the interviews with teams who asked him to script plays.

High expectations from a winning program..UH needs to develop this culture of building a winning program with HIGHER expectations like a winning percentage of 64+ percent as a base especially while playing in a very weak basketball conference…Nash’s team won 13 games against a very, very weak field

  165. lakesidegt March 27, 2009 2:08 pm

    Garret:
Story that I heard regarding the old Aloha Stadium turf was that it got “split up” between different high schools. Probably would have made more sense for one school to get it intact, but….

  166. Stretch March 27, 2009 2:12 pm

I think Rob25 will be there too

  167. Kazz March 27, 2009 2:12 pm

  176. Garret March 27, 2009 2:27 pm

    lakesidegt,

That is very interesting! I’m not sure if it was a great idea to split up the turf, but at least they didn’t just throw it away. It would have been nice to raise some money by selling it to the fans. It would have been even nicer to offer some of the turf to past UH players that played on it–put it in a nice frame include some words thanking the player who played on the turf.

Acknowledging past players in a variety of ways would be great. I know that the Letterwinners Club does stuff and a lot of other things are done, but more could be done for past players. Maybe some of those players would feel an even stronger bond to the school and donate more back, especially the guys in the NFL.

  212. Garret March 27, 2009 3:56 pm

This article indicates that Miami might take David Veikune with a second round pick (their 2nd pick of the 2nd round), if he isn’t already taken or if they don’t draft an OLB in their first 2 picks. The #56 pick would be a good spot for Veikune, 2nd round would be nice. Some people project him for the 3rd round, but I’m hoping there is a run on pass rushers and he goes in the 2nd round.

The Dolphins were at USC this week to work out the Trojans’ three stud linebackers — Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews — but they also took the time during their visit to take a look at another prospect. This one wasn’t a USC player, but rather David Veikune from the University of Hawaii, Scout.com has learned.

The 6-3, 255-pound Veikune is rated as the 10th-best defensive end prospect by Scout.com, but at his size, it’s as an outside linebacker that the Dolphins would consider drafting him.

Barring a Dolphins trade, they currently hold their 25th, 44th and 56th selections in the draft, and Veikune projects most closely to the No. 56.

Miami’s fourth pick is No. 87 overall, but Veikune figures to have been drafted by that point.

Interesting interview with Mel Kiper, Jr. in one of the Miami-area papers. Here is one of the shorter answers in the interview:

On why teams do not need to draft a center early …
“Tough overachieving, hard-working centers make it far in this league. If you look in the NFL right now, a lot of these guys were not highly regarded coming out of college and now they’re starting. That’s why there’s an argument, definite argument, to not draft a center early because you don’t have to. Now there’s going to be three going in the second round – Eric Wood, Max Unger and Alex Mack are all going to go and they’re all outstanding players. But, you can create centers that are more than solid in the NFL.”

To add to the Aloha turf saga, there apparently was no consensus on what to do with the turf. Thus, a “Solomon” like decision was made and the turf was sent in pieces to different schools, for who knows what purposes.

  260. chawan_cut March 28, 2009 12:07 am

great way to give it to the chanticleers after last night’s no hitter. comeback in the 9th and have them falter with the hit batter and then a nice non-stressful 7-1 2nd game.
some interesting stuff happened. first that “walk off” hit batter on the 1st pitch after intentionally loading the bases. previous to that, greg garcia could’ve had a walk off 3 run homer that just went foul. i swear the umps had no clue. the wind was a whipping and the ball was so close on that foul pole i bet he guessed. the coach was so mad he threw his clipboard down and wasn’t happy to shake coach trap’s hand afterward. his fault for not pulling his pitcher.
never seen a batter get called out for stepping out of the batter’s box, but the CCU all-everything centerfielder attempted a bunt in the first game and fouled it but was called out because he lunged forward out of the box as he did. he wasn’t very happy with that and was arguing with the ump all the way back to the dugout. could see him complaining to his teammates. i think that got to him as he got on base in the 2nd game in the 1st inning. he got thrown out by our catcher because he wasn’t paying attention. after a pitch by sisto, asato quickly threw a liner to 1st and he was tagged out. he looked like he was chatting with the 1st base ump and wasn’t paying attention and easily got tagged. he didn’t even try to make it back to 1st base.
ok, thats it for me. tired. need sleep. good to see the other tsaikos and lots of other fans in the house.
good luck to the bows tomorrow. hope they can continue the momentum.

Ah, the 49ers got themselves a new RT.

    http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/03/jennings-out-smith-in-at-right-tackle.html

I like Marvel Smith, he should be a huge upgrade over the oft-injured and overrated Jonas Jennings. But Smith has to stay healthy himself. 49ers should still look at a tackle in the middle rounds for depth. A guy like Jason Watkins out of Florida would be nice — developmental with huge upside. Depending on Adam Snyder’s health, maybe look for a veteran backup for cheap.

  263. warriorfanny March 28, 2009 7:59 am

Congrads to the bsb bows for a redeeming DH sweep over a 2008 super regional team and wahine Amanda Tauali’i for her awesome 3 HR, 4-4 and 4 RBI performance.

Bows are turning it around and are 12/3 in last 15 and 9/1 @ home in last ten.
Go figure, they are hitting below .250 as a team and keep getting stellar performances from no name pitchers.
    Clutch and tough for sure.

NMSU is ranked #24 in Collegiate Baseball NP and Hawaii, Fresno State and San Jose State are mentioned in USA today…WAC may see 2-3 teams in regional play?
