Everything’s set
Greg McMackin said the coaches have scripted every drill for the 15 practices of spring training. The first practice is at 4 p.m. Monday.
* * *
And there’s a happy ending. Richard Torres has agreed to give up No. 11, enabling Inoke Funaki to finish his career with that jersey number. They’re both Kahuku High graduates, by the way.
* * *
Chris Williams will serve as the interim video coordinator. Williams is a former UH linebacker. His most memorable act was in front of the cameras. Before a statewide television audience during the softball team’s Senior Day ceremony, Williams proposed to Kaulana Gould.
* * *
After a very brief experiment at running back, Bryce Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea is back at quarterback.
“That’s where my calling is,” said Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea, a former Castle standout. “That’s where I belong.”
He missed all of last season after suffering a torn ACL. He said he is healthy now.
He joins a crowded field. The top of the depth chart goes like this: Greg Alexander, Brent Rausch and Shane Austin. Those three will get the majority of the reps in team drills.
Limited work will go to Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea, Steele Jantz and Bryant Moniz. In fall training, three freshmen join the competition.
“I don’t mind,” Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea said. “It’s actually going to push me into doing my best, being up against guys who also are hungry for that position.”
Aloha
that’s a lot of QBs… Then there is Inoke who may return if SB Or RB doesn’t pan out…
I hope Kazz and Rob25 made it to the baseball game.
I got there at 5 p.m. to drop off the tickets, and then I realized … whoops, I forgot the tickets at the office.
So I zipped back.
Didn’t get to the box office again until about 5:30.
Fortunately, the traffic was light because of Kuhio Day.
Which brings me to this question: How come Kalakaua doesn’t get a day?
d1shima get a pair of tickets for tonight, but I can’t remember who the other winners were last week.
They can call me at 256-0223, and we can figure out the next two days.
Like BigWave said, that is a LOT of QBs. I don’t know how many reps Bryce Kalau‘oka‘a‘ea will be able to get, but I hope that he’s fully recovered from his injury and does his best. The freshmen QBs will make the position really crowded in the Fall, so Bryce needs to impress the coaches in the Spring if he wants a shot at getting reps in the Fall.
BSU is moving their opening game to Thursday. It would be really good for the WAC if they beat Oregon, so I’ll cheer for them that week. And then I’d like for the WAC teams (especially UH!) to beat BSU to show the conference is really strong.
This Oklahoma recruit might have thrown away what looked to be a bright future in football…he hasn’t even started college yet and he’s put Oklahoma on the defensive. His high school might kick him out and I doubt Oklahoma wants him to show up.
wasn’t it mentioned that Shane and Steele might get scholies soon? If so come fall that would make 8 QB’s on scholie. But I assume 1 or 2 may be asked to greyshirt.
When Aloha Stadium replaces its surface, I wonder if UH could sell pieces of the current surface as a fundraiser?
BigWave,
It was mentioned that they might use Steele at other positions–I think he was on the list for TEs even. I would be surprised if all 3 QB recruits started in the Fall, that would really make it tough for them to get reps. But the recruits have to be willing to grayshirt….
when Josh Rice is done after this fall, Jake Heun should wear #47 for his last year and be known as AK47
Is this a first step for Chris Williams to get the video coordinator position or are they just having him fill in before they hire the permanent person? If he’s one of the candidates for the position, then filling in now would seem to give him an advantage.
Garret:
I think it’s the first step in his candidacy.
But also it’s out of necessity. UH can’t go without a VC for spring ball.
Shane Austin is getting a scholarship this summer.
Steele Jantz is not set to receive one, yet.
I think Tuika Tufaga also should be getting one.
Morning all!
I thought it was kind of neat that, as a no-hitter was being tossed at Murakami Stadium, Kevin Costner was throwing a perfect game on Channel 7 in “For Love of the Game”.
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
ST – if you can remember, please talk to Walter
Good Morning to the World Wide Tsaiko Village! Hope everyone has a great Friday and an even better weekend!
Oldie:
The other Hawai‘i tie is that Costner’s wife in the movie is Kelly Preston, a Punahou grad.
Should be an interesting softball game tonight.
is there something secret we should know about softball??
AT,
When my daughter was putting my son’s graduation slideshow together, I suggested opening with “The school that brought you Steve Case, Michelle Wie, and Kelly Preston, now presents…”
He didn’t go for that.
By the way, are you still teaching that journalism class? One day, I want my daughter to take it from you.
Sorry. Meant ST not AT…
ST,
Mahalo for the answer. I agree that UH needs a video guy for the spring, and if he does a good job he can make it very hard for anyone else to beat him for the position.
Interesting chart of NFL minimum salaries. For the Warriors who make it to the active roster as rookies, their minimum salary will be $310k. For 2nd year players, their minimum salary will be $385k, and it goes up for each year of experience.
Good morning all!
How does the current number of QB recruits compare to coach Jone’s days? He usually had just as many, IIRC.
Once again, I have to believe that out of all of those recruits, there should be at least a couple of guys who would be very good at running the “O”.
Is Coach Shaw doing anything with the O – line guys yet?
For the NBA, minimum salaries for rookies next season will be $458k and 2nd year players have a minimum salary of $736k.
Re: Coaches Clinic April 18
Gordie Shaw and Chris Tormey are going to be speaking on OLine and Special Teams. I think I will be attending the clinic to listen to them.
For baseball, minimum salaries for rookies this season will be $400k.
ODIE: what, you don’t want your daughter’s son being from the same school as President Obama?
ST, Will they “trim” the roster down after spring ball? If so, do you see a couple of the spring QB’s getting cut? I think the odd men out might be Moniz & Bryce if they start chopping.
http://www.lpgascoring.com/leaderboard.html
Through seven holes Michelle Wie is currently +3 in today’s second round. And +4 for the tournament. Having started the day from the back nine, she is now playing the 16th hole. With the probable projected cut at +4 she has to maintain par the rest of the way if she wants to play on the weekend.
On yesterday’s round (from the Arizona republic)
Michelle Wie, who drew huge galleries in 2004 and ’05 at Superstition Mountain, appeared to have the biggest crowd following her Thursday. Wie, playing this year as a tour member for the first time, missed two short par putts over the last four holes and shot 1-over 73.
from -AP
Michelle Wie is back on the Tour for the first time since the SBS Open at Turtle Bay in Hawaii.
“The course is in good condition,” she said. “I played here on Sunday. From Sunday to now it’s been a great improvement. The fairways are in good condition. It’s a little deceiving because it’s brown in some spots, but the course is in great condition. It’s a really great track.”
Wie said she’s loving life as a student at Stanford.
“This is such a great time in my life,” she said. “For six months, I’m a golfer and I hibernate and become a hermit and think about golf. At college, I feel like I’m just a normal 19-year-old. I feel like I have a great variety in my life.”
from the sports network-
The 19-year-old college sophomore, who earned her tour card through Q-school last year, took second place at the season-opening SBS Open in Hawaii. She hasn’t played competitively since.
“I felt like it was a hard day out there, with the wind and everything. I felt a little bit rusty,” said Wie. “I made a couple of stupid errors, but overall I played pretty solid.”
Note-The wind was howling at 40mph in yesterday’s first round, I’ve read… Don’t know how it is so far in the second round.
Looking at the leader board from the first round it’s very noticeable that the women golfers from Korea are doing well.
Hope JD and his family are enjoying their vacation.
But JD, while on personal busines, should still drop by and vist his MVB team in Irvine.
He should at least buy them a PRE-GAME MEAL.
According to ST, MVB guys are sleeping 3 to a room; and NO pre-game meal.
MVB team is one loss away from being eliminated from playoffs.
What a way to run a D1 program !!!
JD should cut his salary too.
Re: No-Hitter against UH Baseball team last night
Cody Wheeler, the pitcher for Coastal Carolina, was getting into a quick rhythm between pitches. As soon as the ball was thrown back from him from the catcher, he was ready to throw the next pitch. I was wondering how come the hitters didn’t do stuff to throw him off?? Get into the batters box, then step out or just take your time getting into batters box. The hitters were helping him keep his rhythm.
Similar to basketball, if the opponents are an up tempo team, you have to slow down your game to not play into their hands.
Hi tom!
Not my daughter’s son. My son.
President Obama wasn’t as famous back in 2005 when our son graduated.
Good morning all….have to do some catching up today so have to ESME….
..and KK/Stretch/Pride/AJoe/sports et al….last p.m. didn’t help….but thanks….LOL
Wasn’t Chris Williams the guy the sprained his ankle on the sidelines during a game cause he was goofing off and not paying attention then the play was run out of bounds towards him. I remember that it was so hilarious cause it was like watching it in slow mo as it happened.
Steele Jantz appears to be a versatile athlete with good size…sure would like to see him moved to another position iif QB is not in his horizon. Im sure MAC & Co think the same as evidenced by urging Inoke and Bryce to try another position.
Great Morning All!
Thanks again Stephen…looking forward to the twinbill later today.
Good Luck to all the Warriors as Spring ball starts up.
White shirt, green shirt, light blue shirt, orange shirt, red shirt, gray shirt: I-no-give-a shirt jus’ go hard! 😈
ST,
Both Rob25 and I made it ok and everything was fine.. well other than the BS “no-hitter”… but now I digress. 😆
The loss was my fault though… I didn’t my UH baseball stress ball. I left it in the car. 🙁
We were 4-0 when I had that thing.
including shane austin, won’t there only be six qb’s on scholie, excluding inoke….?
Stretch,
No doubt they had to try do something to break up that guy’s rhythm.
that vc position is worth its weight in gold.
Tough when your team gets no-no’d.
It’s exciting to watch but you hate to see the “good guys” lose. 🙁
😯
… Well we should do fine as long as I avoid running into any member of the coaching staff BEFORE the game, which should be fine because I’ll be showing up a little after 6 anyway.
A perfect game, otoh….I’d applaud that, no matter what.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Sat w/ Rob25, Koakane, Powderfpuff & da instagator Stretch last night. Joined by Kazz later. Rowdy group, fun time at the game even though the hits weren’t coming.
Places to go, people to see… Esme & out…
re#33
first the site gives a (#)=player started on back 9 next to Michelles name
and as I reported, so when I look I think if she’s at the 16 hole and still has the front nine to play ( and that was less than an hour ago). So now I look again, and she’s done with the second round. How confusing is that. Anyway, she shot a 76 and is +5 for the tournament. And is unlikely to make the projected cut of +4, although if miraculously all the remaining second round golfers completing the second round shoot higher score it’s conceivable that she could squeak in, but I wouldn’t count on it.
BATS WILL COME ALIVE FOR BOTH THE WAHINE AND THE BASEBOWS TONIGHT!
yup, i agree with ya stretch.
they should have pulled the old “fake the sore leg timeout to mess up the pitcher’s routine trick” or the “argue the strike zone to the point of near ejection routine” or the “crowd the plate and try to lean into the pitch bait job just to get on base and mess up the pitcher (heck we have enough lefties).” well, thats what we were thinking during the telecast.
sometimes they are in a warp zone and don’t have that gamesmanship of old. need to learn from the old guys.
Garrett:
Unfortunately the current Aloha Stadium turf is not the carpet-like kind that can be pulled up and cut into squares. The old turf was like that but the current surface has a base layer with the long “blades” of grass which are held in place by a layer of rubber granules called infill. The only way to sell it and keep it together would be in boxes or pans. Speaking of the new turf at Aloha….I hope they get the kind that they got a Roosevelt….it has the rubber granules too, but it looks much better than field turf and the granules seem to stay in place better and don’t get into your shoes as much.
that lefty was crafty as well. he knew how to vary the velocity, vary the location, vary the pitch selection, used several grips on his fastball, and had great location.
although a sub mlb size guy, he could get a shot inspite of his measurables. reminds me of a lefthanded shane komine.
TGIF
Good morning blog readers!
Happy belated birthday!
No hitter huh. Didn’t watch the game but I bet the pitcher was a lefty… 😆
al…if Inoke is moving to RB…he wouldn’t still be considered a QB on scholie would he???
roysan16,
as I speak, there are only 7 golfers ahead of her at the cut line and over 30 plus golfers have not teed off. its very probable that she will make the cut, think her chances are good.
I thought it was a pretty good crowd last night considering it was a weeknight. I don’t think UH was expecting it. They only had one food concession and one beer line open.
Instigator?? me?? BTW – it was Rob25 who started all the yelling and getting rowdy
The current field turf at Aloha Stadium needs to go ASAP.
Koakane pointed out that CCU’s defense was pretty good. Good to have slick infielders and speed in the outfield.
From reading the posts, I gather the CCU pitcher must have been really poised, focused, and in control. Hard to throw that kind of pitcher’s rhythm off. I suppose that’s why he was the starting pitcher.
Now did Kazz just jinx the BaseBows???
Other morning paper had an article on UH’s first “jr” day for football. Interestingly, the writer pointed out that anyone who attends will be counted as an “official visit” to the school.
This means that the player can go on 4 official visits as a senior? Who will keep tabs on who attended? How will the NCAA keep track of athlethes who attend “jr” days across the country?
jus askin!
Chris Mortensen just reported on ESPN that Mark Sanchez had a workout with Washington as well as some other teams.
morning tsai-ko country 8) think it sunny out dea or still has fog in the eyes.
mahalo to rob25 for invite to last night game. stretch did a good job keeping meling, dara and r25 entertained when cheering.
al was thinking the same re: Shane Komine. even tho UH loss I enjoyed the game because of the plays made by the Carolina team….very well coached, big and athletic. bows stuck with dem but should forget what happened cause its another game. if they hit the ball hard again me thinks balls will fall in.
saw greg oniante and shannon hirai at last night game. greg very upset UH got no no’d. goniante still holds career high batting average at UH.
stretch tru dat but when you winning the fans show up. UH admin should know dat by now. how you figga yea
A-House – if a person pays his own way for jr day does that still count as an official visit? I’m sure somebody will be keeping track.
If it counts as an official visit, is it worthwhile for them to come over for only an afternoon?? Isn’t regular visits 2 days?? If they took another visit their Senior year, does that count as another visit, so they would have 2 visits to UH??
If so, I think there might be a lot of Juniors who might want to reconsider attending.
I don’t think a jr day counts as an official visit. Where’s Jason? I’m sure he can find the cite for official vs. unofficial visits as it pertains to jr days.
Are the Junior Day invitees supposed to be Hawaii kids? If that’s the case, I’m kinda skeptical about having it as one-day event at Aloha Stadium. If the point is to “woo them” by having them tour the facility, many of them already play there anyway. 😕
homey,
We talking about football recruits, not Math League….
d1 – I would think the jr day is going to be on campus…cooke field?
I doubt that it counts as an official recruiting visit. Aren’t universities allotted only a certain amount of recruits during a calendar year? Isn’t it around 40 recruits? If there are over a hundred juniors attending camp, that would already exceed the limit.
I would think that Garret knows the rules on this since he follows the Texas Jr Day.
Hey I wasn’t the one taunting Wheeler!
Thanks ST for the tickets! It was fun being there!
you was the one taunting the umpire… I wonder if he heard you??
Apparently, according to you…I don’t project enough from my gut! That’s okay though because I had you to reiterate what I was yelling!
Homey,
If I bring my UH baseball stress ball to the Wahine softball game tonight everything should be pono.
No worries.
Kazz – please bring your balls to all the UH games
Kazz – Does it work for football?
Stretch had fun last night.
Saw Koakane with a new look/routine with the inside out UH baseball cap. I don’t think I’ll be trying that anytime soon.
🙂
Stretch – When he starts cheering with the high voice then you know he forgot them.
kentucky fires Gilliespie, mbb coach, after posting a 2 year 40-27 record..he had a salary of 2.3 million a year, 7 year contract…we have a coach with a 2 year losing record at about 250K a year with one year to go and our AD is pondering, extension one year, 2 years or next year is Nash’s last…difference in demanding a winning program in a rich tradition at Kentucky and in Hawaii if you are a nice guy and you trying its okay even if people are not flocking to the game. last year’s attendance was 3600 per game, not sure if that is tickets issued
Ralph – If UH hires someone like Gillespie, pay him 2+ million a year, do you think he will be able to get the recruits and have a 40-27 2-year record?
Homey,
I know my white 👿 #6 👿 football jersey (0-3) doesn’t work for football. I shall stick with my black/green #11 (5-1) this season.
Kazz – You should test out your ball at the football game.
Better question is how long will he be commited to the UH program and it’s development into a true basketball contender?
My guess is he’d ditch us if he came to UH.
OK, gang here is what the article says:
“…..High school coaches were asked to nominate their top prospects to attend the event on campus, which counts as a recruiting visit.”
Article goes on to say that Coach Mack expects 150-200 players and their parents. Parents in attendence is definitely a winna, in my books, as they can really make good observations which hopefully leads to making UH the choice for their sons.
Junior Day:
I think it counts as an unofficial visit, especially since UH is making the athletes pay for their own meals.
A true recruiting visit means UH pays for lodging, all the meals.
Schools have “unofficial” visits all of the time.
Heck, Andrew Manley took one last year.
Just walk up and say, hey.
I think Homey can take an unofficial visit, if he wishes.
A-House – Okay, then a recruiting visit could be an unofficial recruiting visit. Well, that’s how I read it…I’m not a good reader though. 😆
ST, the Spring Prospectus lists Blaze as a Jr. I though he was supposed to be a Sr. for the upcoming year?
ST – I was thinking of walking on but I already used up my years of eligibility. Oh, the sport would have been golf. I had second thoughts after I found out that they don’t ride golf carts.
Kazz: Saw Koakane with a new look/routine with the inside out UH baseball cap. I don’t think I’ll be trying that anytime soon.
Kazz old school tradition, bottom of nine home team down rally cap babe
too bad, you could have been another Tadd Fujikawa…. I wonder how many more steps Tadd has to take during a round of golf compared to say Ernie Els??
howzit homey 😆 what you doing today?
#56-layson, your right, looking better that she’ll make it. Good correction. With top 70 and ties she should be around for the weekend, great.
KapoleiWarrior,
Thank you for your post #52. It was good to learn about the turf at Aloha Stadium. What did they do with the old turf? I’m just curious, as there were so many memorable games played on that turf.
It would be great if the next surface at Aloha Stadium could take advantage of the latest advances in turf.
ST:
Thanks, good neighbor, for the explanation. It makes more sense.
Wish the writer for the article could have made the distinction as those who are not privy to this blog would be wondering as I was.
Why did Manley just walk up and say, “hi, I’m Andrew Manley” – bet the coaches went thru the roof!!!
I have always wondered, especially during the JJ tenure, if the “offensive scheme was SO GOOD, why did UH not attract the very best QB’s, receivers, and Olineman? What say you out there? Care to give your opinion(s)?
So… ST, what’s the scoops with the “interesting” softball matchup tonight?
roysan:
your #97 – I will presume that the other lady golfers currently onthe course are also having a “bad” time with the elements and Michelle will make the cut?
Having to study and take final exams during the past week before the tournament took its toll on her game while others were busy practicing or playing in tournaments. I think this bodes well for Michelle that she can still grind it out without the benefit of practicing.
glad to hear Noke’ will finish his career with number 11. as a senior he should had been given that right, i think he deserves it. it should have not been an issue in the first place.
pssst, ST, please delete my comment #24 before Peaches gets mad…. She’s looking for me now. I figure being the only guy in a karaoke room with 10 office ladies is better than Peaches habutz….the party is probably only going to be 3-4 hours, habutz time is indefinite… 😐
BTW, tonight was the inspiration for the Tsaikette-only karaoke call possibility.
ypo:
Blaze is supposed to be a senior.
SteveM:
What comment?
(Yep, I figured out how to delete again. We have a new program, but it didn’t come with instructions, and, well, I’m a guy, and I don’t ask for help.)
SteveM:
I thought I was the only one faced with “indefinite habutz”? Glad to have your company.
Why is the Blog host’s neighbor reading the other paper?
penguin,
good question, maybe not enough ‘good stuff’ on dis side? haha
A-House,
The person who wrote that article *really* worded that misleadingly, as it would be reasonable to come to the conclusion that you came to. However, going to Junior Days does NOT count as the official visit that a recruit can take once to a school.
I think that this problem is because UH didn’t do Junior Days in the past and the writer didn’t do enough research to explain the issue properly. Here is some additional information about Junior Days:
1. Some recruits go to more than 5 Junior Days, there is no limit to the number of Junior Days a recruit attends but there is a limit to official visits a recruit can take.
2. Universities can have hundreds of recruits attend Junior Days (like UH will) even though they are limited to a much smaller number for official visits.
3. Recruits attend Junior Days *and* go on recruiting visits 6-12 months later to visit the school again before NLI day. This happens at Texas every year, this happened with recruits for schools ranging from LSU to SMU last year, and it is all perfectly legal. Recruits pay their way to the Junior Day so it isn’t considered an “official” visit in the eyes of the NCAA…maybe just in the eyes of a reporter who isn’t clear on the rules.
4. Many schools have 2 Junior Days and recruits could actually attend both if they wanted to…at least I’ve heard that is what has happened on some occasions in the past. Schools like Texas are bringing in Sophomores to their 2nd Junior Day (since their recruiting is almost done with the Juniors), and those Sophomores will attend the Junior Day the following year as Juniors. And then they will go on their recruiting visit after their senior season is over.
5. Schools tend to get a fair number of commits from recruits that attend their Junior Days. They then bring the commits for their official visit at the same time as other recruits they are trying to get to commit. The already committed recruits can bond with the uncommitted recruits and be very effective recruiters for the school. This is another reason how Junior Days can pay off for schools.
6. Because recruits pay their way to the Junior Day, this is an extremely inexpensive way for schools to recruit! This can cut down on the number of recruiting visits the schools need to pay for, which is very important at schools with limited recruiting budgets like UH. I’ve been talking about Junior Days for years, well before this blog even existed, and am glad that it is finally happening at UH. JJ had a Junior Day last year at SMU and already had a Junior Day this year, so I’m guessing there was some other thing (HF? facilities? budget? no recruiting coordinator?) preventing him from doing this while he was at UH.
This was probably way more information than anyone would want to have about Junior Days. If I hadn’t seen how effective they can be and how they actually saved schools money, I wouldn’t care as much.
I believe in multiple sources of information and we get both papers at work M-F. Collection of data from multiple sources best to arrive at a good decision ( I think that’s what lecturers were trying to say in intelligence shcool).
Interesting contrast in the beat writers.
A-House,
Unofficial visits are limitless because it is on your dime. Official visits are the ‘real thing’ because the school pays for everything from Point A to Point B. Which leads me to my next point, the cost-effectiveness of offering trips to Hawaii kids. The travel costs are higher per visit, and you could get 3 California kids for the same money.
just sharing the process so that families realize the investment that the schools make in your son and how we should respect them for doing that. it’s not a shell game, but it is real business for these schools. so when we have an incident like a student who takes the offer of a trip but then disrespects the coaches there by telling them he had not intention of playing there, that makes it tough on future kids to get off of the rock.
just my 2 sense
What if the neighbor, was actually “borrowing” HIS neighbors newspaper?
roysan16,
as of now, she is in the cut line at tie for 68th. with that being said, anything can happen, many golfers still have to finish. the reason why i said she has a good chance is that this tourney is the lpga. after the top 20 players or so, there is not much talent on lpga which is why the cut line fluctuates so much. It is rare to find the cut line on the pga change much because the pga tour has greater talent from top to bottom. whether or not she makes cut, her goal must be to win, and she has the talent to win this year easy, like i said before, the lpga is weak. compared to most lpga women, she has size and distance advantage in her favor. compared to most pga men though, she has no advantage.
An instigatin’ penguin?
A storm hit LSU and damaged a portion of their campus. Their indoor practice facility was hit pretty hard, which will force them to scramble with their spring practice plans.
Do you think that my neighbor subscribes to the other paper?
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, let’s not tell his bosses that he uses the other paper to gain intelligence for his paper. And, it’s not considered a “business expense”!
Appreciate all the responses clarifying “jr day” and recruiting visit versus “offical recruiting”.
Parents and players from outer islands are making a very big investment to attent UH’s “jr-day”.
I look at it as their commitment that the player is really interested in becoming a Warrior. No small change in our bad economy!! Thank you for your contribution to “stimulating the economy”.
DPK:
Do we know “penguin”? Writing style very familiar don’t you think?
koakane – Just got back from Chinatown.
Thanks ST!
A-House — yup, we can predict the length of habutz by incident by now. 🙂 This one she planned for over a month, printed invitations w/karaoke tokens, updated the menu prices, passed around a karaoke song number book at the office, etc. So this one rates the “indefinite” category… 🙂
A-House,
I read the other paper online, as I wouldn’t miss any news about the Warriors. I archive all of the quotes I can find about the Warriors in my Warriorquotes blog, and I couldn’t ignore any source of quotes. The blog makes money that is being donated to Na Koa–if I get one more sponsor the money would put the blog well above the “Captain” level in their membership.
I think the Emperor Penguin would write with a British accent or like James Earl Jones.
SteveM – Besides eating together, what else is missing during the habut phase???
What other paper?
I only subscribe to The Advertiser.
and that’s why they write for the other guys
Say, homey, what are you doing this evening around 5:30…? 🙄
suscribe = pays for. don’t tell me you have to pay for your own newspaper??
Isn’t the appropriate greeting…hello how you? 😆
SteveM – If I was with Stretch, KK, and (J)J around 5:30 p.m. I would be having a lot of fun…
homey If UH could afford 2+ million for a bb coach whether he is Gilliespie or someone else of note, I would say yes he would easily surpass the 40-27 record in 2 years. Nash’s team played a non conference schedule with only 3 teams of 13 ending with a winning record and add on the weak WAC teams there would be no doubt in my mind that a winning record could be achieved here in Hawaii…
It sure sounds like the 49ers interview players differently than the other NFL teams.
I wonder if Rob25 heckles in the bedroom?
A-House,
I have no clue as to who “penguin” might be. This penguin doesn’t know punctuation very well. Could be a lot of folks.
Do you think FF, Russian, and penguin might be related?
I like the “penguin” nic. Amusing.
Oops I almost forgot for today:

Current count = 21
You know what’s a funny thought? A penguin with an agenda… 😆
Okay, Ralph, that’s a bet…since you didn’t take my other bet.
Ralph,
Don’t forget that Kentucky has a number of top D-IA recruits in their state, many within easy driving distance of campus. The tradition at Kentucky means that many of those recruits commit to the University no matter who is coaching there.
You could fill the rosters of at least 5 D-IA schools with recruits just from Kentucky, and each school would have the talent to make it to the NCAA tournament. How many D-IA recruits come from the state of Hawaii?
Rob25 – I thought the count was up to 30 already?
DPK – What’s even funnier is a penguin not wearing a tux.
I heckle everywhere…mostly to myself.
😳
homey…somehow the count on SteveM’s page isn’t there anymore…I think it is up to 30 though
Never seen one homey… A casual penguin?
Would that penguin be naked?
Hello everyone!
Conferences are finally over for the semester.
homey — darn, all this competition to party with ladies tonight at 10:1 or higher ratios! Good luck!
Oh well, Peaches did say “no ringers” tonight .
So where is chawan_cut, Jason, Kazz…? 👿
DPK – Here’s one: http://www.cdnn.info/eco/e010908/white_penguin_250368.jpg
Hi DPK, wafan and SteveM!
SteveM – What happened to KK info on your page?
No naked penguins on here. This is a family blog. 😳
homey℞ – You got issues!
BTW…you going pink tonite?
Rob25 — the count is there and it is 30 as of last night.
Hiya Rob! Wanna see a nekkid penguin? Ask homey…
Rob25 – No pink for me. Remember I have someone over for spring break???
Homey I accept the bet but you got to pay the 2+million salary cuz JD doesn’t have that much left in his budget….the piggy bank is empty, no rainy day fund, HF spent it…I think Riley’s career wins at UH totaled about 54% or very close to it…not the kind of record to draw elite bb players out this way….
Ralph – Looks like we will have to wait a very long time for that bet. 😆
DPK,
That’s how Batman gets messed up.
Garret my comment was based on Ky firings its coach after two years with 5 yrs to go and he had a 40-27 record..not his recruiting, and his team did win 40 games but not good enough for Ky AD..Ky did not make it to the NCAA. High expectations from a winning program..UH needs to develop this culture of building a winning program with HIGHER expectations like a winning percentage of 64+ percent as a base especially while playing in a very weak basketball conference…Nash’s team won 13 games against a very, very weak field
Koakane are you headed out to the UH bb game at 330
Louisville is taking care of Arizona. 49-28 halftime
A belated Happy Birthday to yesterdays birthday boys!
Too bad to hear about 2nd Nature. Was the diference the performance or a larger fan base?
Howzit, gang!
Oh, wait…….”hello…how you?”
hahaha..Hi Rob25!
Howzit Coloma!! I think there are some of us who will be stopping by tonight.
SteveM:
Know what you mean by the “degree” of what we do.
Sometimes silence is good, but is the wrong way for us.
Rob25: you like join us? C’mon!!
Hiya C! We’ll see some of you tonight!
Howzit, Stretch!….right on! So I’ve heard……
Glad you guys are making it! I’m going there a little earlier than everyone else to, uh….”kapu tables”….So, if I don’t recognize any of you by the time you get there….please forgive me.
I.WILL.BE.S#1+FACED.ALREADY.
hahahaha..Sorry, no control….
Hey Cenn!! hahahaha…Hope Greg feels better! Eh, no lie….what you wen slip in his dinner last night? hahahaha…My hooos-bond not meeting me tonight until about 9:30….so at least he won’t be that lonely…I told him Greg was coming.
Garret:
Story that I heard regarding the old Aloha Stadium turf was that it got “split up” between different high schools. Probably would have made more sense for one school to get it intact, but….
I think Rob25 will be there too
Colomaohana,
You off today huh?
How you know Stretch?
What’s happening tonight…besides SteveM and his harem party?
SteveM – I don’t even see the event on the page…unless I am missing something.
homey – oh yeah, too bad you sked the pink mafia!
SteveM – My bad…wasn’t on the front page anymore…found it on the events calendar
Rob25 – Damn right I’m sked! For some reason, many on the pink side want to slap me around.
Rob…Hello…How you???
and I fear not the pink mafia…..LMAO
pssssst, Rob25, what home page are you looking at on SteveM’s site?
Big C…yeah, your favorite stars…sans homey…will be there tonight…LOL
lakesidegt,
That is very interesting! I’m not sure if it was a great idea to split up the turf, but at least they didn’t just throw it away. It would have been nice to raise some money by selling it to the fans. It would have been even nicer to offer some of the turf to past UH players that played on it–put it in a nice frame include some words thanking the player who played on the turf.
Acknowledging past players in a variety of ways would be great. I know that the Letterwinners Club does stuff and a lot of other things are done, but more could be done for past players. Maybe some of those players would feel an even stronger bond to the school and donate more back, especially the guys in the NFL.
Louisville is crushing Arizona…for now.
Oklahoma is leading Syracuse at the half.
so what am i not knowing about tonight?
homey – 😯 No really!
Hello…how you JJ?
homey – I said front page…the one with the countdown. Get it right!
chawan – As you can see, Rob25 has already started drinking.
pssst, Rob25, the one with the countdown has the event listed…mousewheel is your friend.
Louisville crushed Arizona.
Oklahoma is spanking Syracuse.
Not on my computer…only had the Maui scrimmage and the tailgate listed.
Go back to your hiding….homeyette!
C_C – Did you catch any balls last nite?
Rob25 – You remembered that name!?!?!?! ROTFLMFAO! You must have some html loading issues on your computer.
Rob…what a question to ask C_C I never know he was li dat…. :-O
Syracuse making a run…
homeyette – Guess I do because when I went to Steve’s post and clicked on his name…same thing
OH, JJ…don’t even bring out Koamahu now!
(J)J – no get any ideas, koa-mahu going get jealous.
rob25,
no. i’ll leave the ball catching to the players and koamahu.
afternoon gang!
homey ℞ – did you folks set a date yet? sorry if i missed it, been slacking 🙂
Rob25 – I see we both are concerned for (J)J. 😆
I wonder if Coach Pitino will buy all his players dinner from McDonalds agter their win tonight?
😈
Loa – I’m waiting for jojo to let us know.
A BMI challenged lady is starting to sing at the Oklahoma game.
Chawan…are you coming to the KK on the 9th?
Ahem…. Sorry I meant AFTER their win…
Well one things for sure…that centerfielder Noel (?) is one fast dude!
homey ℞ – copy that; were you thinking full pads day like last year?
Garret, you know Colt Brennan deserves a portion of the Aloha Stadium turf.
At least the part he threw up on… 😆
Afternoon Tsaikos!
Good luck to the baseball Bows & the wahine softball team this weekend!
Gotta switch my radio for the start of the game.
Loa – yep, full pads. Hopefully, jojo does too and picks the 2nd week and a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Syracuse is disposed.
Kazz – plan on attending spring practice?
BaseBows underway. Let’s try to avenge last night’s no-no!
Looks like Wie will make the cut.
My bracket was on life support, but now it’s done. 🙁
That’s ok Jason, thank you for setting it up for us!
Hi midori7!
Missed yelling with you last night at the game.
You coming to the KK?
See you tomorrow!
J (J)/Chawan – eh no tease me bumbai i not goin let you guys make me into a meat lover’s sandwhich anymoa! bwhahahahahahaha
This article indicates that Miami might take David Veikune with a second round pick (their 2nd pick of the 2nd round), if he isn’t already taken or if they don’t draft an OLB in their first 2 picks. The #56 pick would be a good spot for Veikune, 2nd round would be nice. Some people project him for the 3rd round, but I’m hoping there is a run on pass rushers and he goes in the 2nd round.
Yay! A hit!
Bwahahahaha!!!!!!!
Jason
Don’t know if my #2 son has advised you yet, but he got accepted to UH, Manoa. When he applied, he actually listed Math as his major! Wonder where he got that idea from?
Loa,
I can go to the practices on the 4th, the 18th, 20th, 22nd, and 23rd… oh and obviously the Warrior Bowl on the 25th.
See you there?
lakesidegt: Good that he got into UH! As for majoring in math, for once that wasn’t my idea. He should take a Calc class at UH to see if he’s ready for it. Good that he wants to try it, though!
i thought by now that the neighbor would be smu’d.
al: Either Stephen can’t figure out how to SMU someone, or he fears the female neighbors. 😀
Well, got 7 of 8 teams left in my bracket. The best I can do is 3 out of the final 4. All I gotta say now is go UNC!
Now listening to the crying of all the Zags fans here in Spokane.
Jason . . .
Would you intentionally tick-off those two? One would hit you low and other would hit you lower.
Talk about literally “stealing” the game…..
baseball WOW
Above comment w/r/t the baseball game.
Speaking of that, BaseBows Game 1 over. Game 2 to commence probably within a half-hour. Gotta go to work so I’ll have to watch the second game in the morning.
Whoooooooosh!!!!!
I am the kiss of death… The lights at the softball stadium went out. Hawaii up 1-0 over Nevada at the top of the 3rd off Taualii’s homer.
Kazz you better start wearing pink at the softball games, your all green outfit doesn’t appeal to the women…
So, at a volleyball game… are the fans supposed to stand for every set point? or just Aloha Ball?
every match point, but the way the men played, you didn’t have to stand at all at Irvine….wait for the wahine season

wahines up 4-1 bottom of 6, taualii with 3 homers
wafan: IDK which one I should be scared of more … 😯
kazz you don’t have to wear pink after all unless you left the game after the black out and went over to the baseball game…
Hellooo everyone(:
I’m still catching up, as always now.
Heh.
Oh oh oh, and for all the MONARCHS out there-
Today the Vars boys baseball team played against Punahou and WON!
The score was Damien: 4, Punahou: 1 🙂
Chee pono.
Haha.
Interesting interview with Mel Kiper, Jr. in one of the Miami-area papers. Here is one of the shorter answers in the interview:
Garret
To add to the Aloha turf saga, there apparently was no consensus on what to do with the turf. Thus, a “Solomon” like decision was made and the turf was sent in pieces to different schools, for who knows what purposes.
Thanks for that update Brie! GO MONARCHS!!!!
A’ole pilikia (:
Hah, they wasn’t expecting it but they played pretty well..
Or so I’m told(:
Hahaha.
kazz you gotta wear pink!
wahines hit 4 home runs and lose…tough loss….5 to 9th batters struggling at the plate…3 are hitting below .200…making it tougher on the 3 freshmen pitchers….
Basebows done good. I love that attempted “suicide squeeze” in the bottom of the 6th with 1 out. That’s exciting *Billy* ball reminiscent of Billy Martin’s style.
Note to coach Trap: Work on bunting.
GO Warriors!
Wow, BaseBows are gettin’ it done! A guaranteed 2-2 or better finish against a No. 18 team should be a huge confidence boost to the team. This is the kind of team I’d love to see come out and play every year.
I guess I went to watch on the wrong day. 😛
jason maybe you and kazz got to watch the game from the parking lot-what is your won loss record in games attended…
I don’t believe in that superstitious kind of stuff. Besides, I don’t have a car to wait in; I’d have to listen to the radio on the bus or something. 😉
re: women’s softball. you score five runs you supposed to win. softball is typically a pitcher dominant game at any level. like all sports, there is a degree of level of how good you are. elite d-1, d1, d2, etc.
Big MAHALO to Stephen for the BaseBow tix 😀
That’s from Mrs. d1島 as well.
Really enjoyed the DH today/tonight. Saw chawan_cut and lakerj/lefty. Sat next to HiFlyer. Saw Kazz walking back to parking structure while we were driving out. Pretty good sized crowd overall.
We’ll take that first W….gratis the Chanticleer 2nd baseman turned pitcher.
The bats showed up in time for the 2nd game to support Sisto.
Good to see the team claw its way through when the pitching struggled a little. This was my first chance to see Alexander live this season and frankly, I hope he can get back into a little better form. Moreso I hope that come-backer to his leg doesn’t develop into a problem.
Hope they can take the series tomorrow then it’s on to start wacking da WAC….
Work day tomorrow.
Oyasumina-tsai….
Good for the BaseBOWS but heartbreak for the Wahine… It was tough seeing the look on the face of Stephanie Ricketts after the game…
Hope Coach Coolen’s squad can come out swinging tomorrow.
Ralph I no longer fear superstitions… Ill be there for the softball game tomorrow. Well, the second game at least.
jason 251….i hear you boy. amen to that.
Al,
You are right, but Nevada scored six. 👿
While the baseBOWS took care of a ranked opponent I still feel empty and bad for the Wahine…
Gonna hit the sack and hope for better tomorrow. 🙁
al: You’re the one who taught me that. 🙂
[gasp] … got back from Peaches’ office karaoke party around 10:45. Only 9 gals showed up. They ordered a surprising amount of food and drink and were all up dancing by 7:30 (except Peaches). The single ones stayed the latest. Note: they say they like dancing with men at least 6′ tall. 🙄 Peaches and I had a certain Tsai-ko come to mind simultaneously…
great way to give it to the chanticleers after last night’s no hitter. comeback in the 9th and have them falter with the hit batter and then a nice non-stressful 7-1 2nd game.
some interesting stuff happened. first that “walk off” hit batter on the 1st pitch after intentionally loading the bases. previous to that, greg garcia could’ve had a walk off 3 run homer that just went foul. i swear the umps had no clue. the wind was a whipping and the ball was so close on that foul pole i bet he guessed. the coach was so mad he threw his clipboard down and wasn’t happy to shake coach trap’s hand afterward. his fault for not pulling his pitcher.
never seen a batter get called out for stepping out of the batter’s box, but the CCU all-everything centerfielder attempted a bunt in the first game and fouled it but was called out because he lunged forward out of the box as he did. he wasn’t very happy with that and was arguing with the ump all the way back to the dugout. could see him complaining to his teammates. i think that got to him as he got on base in the 2nd game in the 1st inning. he got thrown out by our catcher because he wasn’t paying attention. after a pitch by sisto, asato quickly threw a liner to 1st and he was tagged out. he looked like he was chatting with the 1st base ump and wasn’t paying attention and easily got tagged. he didn’t even try to make it back to 1st base.
ok, thats it for me. tired. need sleep. good to see the other tsaikos and lots of other fans in the house.
good luck to the bows tomorrow. hope they can continue the momentum.
cc….you do mean kevin fujii, catcher from the rough rider school don’t you.
jason….good boy.
softball will have a tough time this year without at least one ace.
Ah, the 49ers got themselves a new RT.
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/03/jennings-out-smith-in-at-right-tackle.html
I like Marvel Smith, he should be a huge upgrade over the oft-injured and overrated Jonas Jennings. But Smith has to stay healthy himself. 49ers should still look at a tackle in the middle rounds for depth. A guy like Jason Watkins out of Florida would be nice — developmental with huge upside. Depending on Adam Snyder’s health, maybe look for a veteran backup for cheap.
Congrads to the bsb bows for a redeeming DH sweep over a 2008 super regional team and wahine Amanda Tauali’i for her awesome 3 HR, 4-4 and 4 RBI performance.
Bows are turning it around and are 12/3 in last 15 and 9/1 @ home in last ten.
Go figure, they are hitting below .250 as a team and keep getting stellar performances from no name pitchers.
Clutch and tough for sure.
NMSU is ranked #24 in Collegiate Baseball NP and Hawaii, Fresno State and San Jose State are mentioned in USA today…WAC may see 2-3 teams in regional play?
