Enemy of the state

Superman needs Lex Luther.

Batman needs the Joker.

Beverly Hills police need Lindsay Lohan.

The best rivalries need, well, rivals. Good, tough opponents. For the football Warriors, BYU and then Boise State served those roles.

And for three years in the 1990s, a bleach-haired guard with a swagger that matched his crossover dribble and straight-to-the-heart jumpers served as the UH basketball team’s nemesis.

Chris Herren was the ringleader of the circus that was the Fresno State basketball team, which featured samurai-sword-wielding players and a towel-chomping head coach.  Herren endured years of alcohol and drug abuse, but is now clean, sober and author of “Basketball Junkie.”

Here’s an excerpt:

SMU was nothing compared to what happened every time we went to Hawaii, where I was the public enemy. I’d come through the tunnel and the whole arena would go nuts. People yelled, threw things, yelled some more. About point shaving. About rehab. “Fall River Nightmare.” You name it, they yelled it. They hated me. And I’d blow kisses to them, which only made them crazier. As a sophomore, I had kicked in 35 against them, in a game that all but ruined their season. After we beat them by two in an NIT quarterfinal game one year, some guy dumped a beer on my head.

When I was there my last time as a senior, there was a big story in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, as if I were a folk hero.

“Tell them to show up,” I was quoted about the fans. “I want to see ten thousand like I’m used to. I want to see the people who have been screaming at me the past two years.”

“He plays with the crowd,” Hawaii coach Riley Wallace said. “Most kids don’t do that. But he acknowledges them, and they feed off that. And he feeds off them. Might be better to give him the silent treatment.”

They didn’t.

But they threw leis on the court in appreciation, so in the end, my teammates and I went on the plane wearing leis.

I loved Hawaii.

Has there ever been a UH opponent like that? BYU pitcher Peter Kendrick baffled the Warriors, but that was more for his skill than theatrics. Jim McMahon? The left-footed, rollout punt was classic, but he was a symptom of the overall BYU mania. UCLA coach Al Scates could induce heckles from volleyball fans, but a coach can’t make winning plays.

Thoughts?

it’s stephen florino – formerly of khnl sports (with jason tang aka “spock”).

read your blog and got a story about chris herren.

i was covering that game for the ka leo at the sheriff against fresno during the ac/alika years. i don’t remember the game, but i know it was a big one. i remember herren killed us. after the game, i went to get an interview with herren. i chased him down the hall as he was walking toward the bus. told him who i was and he put his arm around me as we walked. i forget what i asked, but i remember the last question was “how does it feel like to be the most hated man in hawaii?” his response — “i love it man, i love it.” he shook my hand and left.

despite his antics, he was the coolest dude. i read about his life and book on yahoo recently. hope the best for him.

please share if you like.

aloha,

florino

For the first time in years, quarterback Bryant Moniz does not have a regular summer job. In his first two UH offseasons, Moniz famously delivered pizzas and, then last summer, worked as a Waikiki beach boy. He did not go on scholarship until last August. Moniz applied too late for a full-time position on the beach this year. Instead, he is training twice a day, studies football videos daily and nightly, and is attending summer session.

  7. A-joe May 27, 2011 1:49 am

Aaaaaaaahh.. Chris Herren; the classic Nemesis we all LOVED to hate! He drove us all NNUTZ!!! It was hilarious!!! That dude not only talked but walked the walk his ENTIRE career against us!

No matter what we threw at him he’d somehow find ways to just beat us! Even our Dynamic Duo were no match for him.

After all the crap we flung his way and the damage he inflicted on us I do recall him saying after his career that he loved Hawaii for we brought out the best in him.

Honestly, it’s awesome to hear he’s doing good.

Chris- continue to bring the fight you had on the court throughout your life. Love you, brah!!

  8. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2011 2:07 am

    A-Joe:

I remember Kevin Hashiro, the future radio guy but then a student, holding up a sign: Chris Herren — Bite Me!

  9. Midnight May 27, 2011 2:09 am

That was a nice piece about Chris Herren, and like A-Joe, I wish him well also. I would like to say a special hello to the above early morning posters! I don’t think I would be awake at your time to post comments. I would be asleep so I could rise up early in the morning to head to the beach!!! You guys are really special!!! Now I am going to the treadmill. No beach here.

    Aloha y’all!

  10. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2011 2:09 am

I had heard a lot about Herren, mostly from that book, “Fall River Dreams.” But my first memory was the game at Fresno. He dunked on Micah Kroeger. Then, with Kroeger sitting on the court, Herren stared at him and started yelling.

    Thus, a rivalry was born.

  11. wafan May 27, 2011 2:36 am

Best to start any tourny in the winners bracket. Unless you like the increased stress and drama.

  15. Midnight May 27, 2011 3:08 am

Hi Wafan, back from my treadmill bit. Don’t you sleep before going to school? Catnap?

  16. wafan May 27, 2011 3:09 am

Looks like this will be another weird summer for the PNW.

The supposed non-existant global warming (really a minnomer) sure is causing problems with the jet-stream which is causing weather pattern problems.

  17. Midnight May 27, 2011 3:10 am

On second thought, no, it is about time for an early riser to get up.

  18. wafan May 27, 2011 3:12 am

    Hi, Midnight!

Wake up around kind of early in the morning all year long. No catnaps for me! Well, except on weekends.

  19. wafan May 27, 2011 3:15 am

Visiting home during the summer it takes awhile to get used to the time difference. I wake up around 1a for the first bunch of weeks. Not much is on TV at that time in Hawai’i. HA!

  20. wafan May 27, 2011 3:16 am

    Time to get to school.

19 more wake ups to go! 12 for most of the seniors!!!

  21. Midnight May 27, 2011 3:25 am

Wafan – thanks for the info. Have a good day!

I was up at 2 am today. Slept from 10 – 2. Wide awake now. Facing a day of watching my yr old grandson at 7:30 am.

Don’t know Chris, because I never watched sports much. And don’t recall hearing hubby speak about him, either.

Good reading your post, though, ST.

Interesting article about how the BCS might grant the MWC its appeal and make the MWC an AQ conference for 2012 and 2013…then take away the AQ status if the MWC doesn’t meet the criteria during the 2010-2013 evaluation period (when TCU’s numbers will count for the Big East instead of the MWC).

The MWC can keep AQ status by having its teams win their nonconference games, since the average computer ranking between conferences is determined by nonconference win percentage. Even with TCU’s numbers counting for the MWC in this evaluation period, the MWC is currently behind the Big East. Add UH/Fresno/Nevada and take away TCU and the MWC will still be behind the Big East. Since apparently the antitrust lawsuit against the BCS would lose, the only solution for the MWC is to *win*. Win nonconference games and keep AQ status after 2013. Lose and lose AQ status. UH’s performance on the field will be a big contributor to this.

Let me be perfectly clear: there’s no chance the DOJ wins any antitrust argument with the BCS. This is not an antitrust issue; the world’s top antitrust attorney, William Monts, wouldn’t be on retainer with the BCS if there were any chance he’d lose.

he final BCS poll will be released on Dec. 4, a day after the final games of the regular season decide who will play in the 14th BCS National Championship Game. Shortly thereafter, after the BCS crunches the four-year analysis numbers, the MWC will officially appeal to gain automatic qualifier status.

And the BCS, if it’s smart, will announce very publicly and very proudly that the MWC has gained automatic qualifier status.

Then say goodbye two years later.

  26. Garret May 27, 2011 3:55 am

UH was in the news for Inside Higher Ed…but I don’t think it is ever a good thing to be used as this kind of example.

For example, it was reported earlier this year that M.R.C. Greenwood, president of the University of Hawaii, has a compensation package featuring a $150,000-a-year expense account. It might take the president of a large community college four years or more to spend that much on his or her expense account.

  27. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2011 4:09 am

I think if point-shaving is a crime, a federal one at that, because it affects the legitimacy of a game, then major NCAA violations involving the acquisition of players also should be a crime because that, too, affects several games.

Vacating football titles have little impact because there are no financial penalties. Is USC, for instance, going to give back the money to the TV networks? Hit a school hard, such as making it forfeit revenue from the season in which the violation occurred, would send a better message.

  28. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2011 4:19 am

So glad about the Mavericks facing the Heat next week. Can’t think of a better match up than that.

Expect to see fireworks between the 2 teams deep in the 4th quarter. Who will prevail? LeBron or Dirk?

    Can’t wait!

  29. Michigan Warrior May 27, 2011 4:41 am

    Morning, everyone!

Great write up, ST! I used to absolutely HATE Herren! I would always think, “I hope we can find a player like THAT, and do the same thing to everyone else”. Our coaches in most sports are giving us that hope, all while raising the bar and meeting goals on academics.

    Go, UH!!!

  30. Lava May 27, 2011 5:00 am

Wow, some real early birds around here.

    Herren had the talent.

  31. Bulla May 27, 2011 5:45 am

Herren was the man, nothing like being cocky AND being able to back it up, loved it!!!

  32. Annoddah Dave May 27, 2011 6:00 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Chris Herren was something to behold. As Bulla says, he was able to back up all the taunting. I thought he would have a great NBA career, but I guess the other stuff took the driver seat. I know he made it to the NBA as a bench player but cannot remember what team.

  33. jm2375 May 27, 2011 6:21 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    Happy Aloha Friday!

Don’t really remember Herren. I only remember the UH players!

Off to the office. Gotta clean up and move files to new computer in prep for the office move. They told us yesterday that we report to the new office on Thursday instead of the following Monday. Yikes!

Aloha Kakahiaka! The best news of the day is the last part.

Moniz for Heisman! Shhh… No campaigning… He’s just going to earn it.

    yea!

    Hiho!

  36. dcwarrior May 27, 2011 6:59 am

Garret, I don’t think this guy’s take is correct: “Let me be perfectly clear: there’s no chance the DOJ wins any antitrust argument with the BCS. This is not an antitrust issue; the world’s top antitrust attorney, William Monts, wouldn’t be on retainer with the BCS if there were any chance he’d lose.”

Monts is on retainer because the BCS agreed to pay him. What’s he going to say, “sorry, I don’t need $2 million in fees”?

Why give a blogger any cred on this issue?

  37. OTO May 27, 2011 6:59 am

I think the old San Diego St baseball coach Jim Dietz was a rival that UH fans loved to hate. I don’t remember anything overt it was just his dour face and the way he would argue calls with the umps… I think to there was a time when UH was sweeping a series, it was a typically rainy Manoa night and some fans were on the SDSU dugout sweeping water off the roof and it was falling on the players. Dietz was going nuts… I think also no one liked the BYU basketball coach (can’t remember his name but his two sons played for him). I remember them screaming at the refs when Trevor Ruffin hit the last second shot to beat BYU…

  38. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2011 6:59 am

Good luck and best wishes to Moniz! Yay!

Does Josh Pacheco get paid by the word? He just tslked from 7:00 to 7:30 straight with one ad break. If his opinions were interesting it would be OK.

  43. rainbowbballer May 27, 2011 7:57 am

Chris Herren, I am happy for him! If he had played for Hawaii, he would have been a legend of the Islands.

  44. chopsueyboy May 27, 2011 8:02 am

We’ve had a customer for a couple of years that we just called Mr. K.

Recently, he sent a tropical flower shipment to a Peter Kendrick in Texas.

I recalled the WAC baseball championship games where Peter Kendrick pitched

the double header and Mr. K confirmed that’s his son.

  45. coach Wallace May 27, 2011 8:23 am

Chris Herren was a very good college player and fun for the fans to watch. I am glad to hear he has straightened out his life. He did make Fresno St. our rival. Hope the baseball rainbow warriors can win the W.A.C. tourney. Go Rainbows

  46. tommui May 27, 2011 8:32 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  47. chawan_cut May 27, 2011 8:35 am

i believe UCLA’s men’s volleyball players were quite hated. i can’t recall their names right now. but back in the yuval days, they were booed every time they touched the ball.

and i’m proud to say i was one of those guys yelling at chris herren when he played here. we were all in the pep band still so we had to keep it tame but we could still yell although it didn’t seem to work as he noted.

  48. Slugger May 27, 2011 8:42 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Study hard, Moniz!

  49. Slugger May 27, 2011 8:46 am

    anklebiters,

Glad you can go to the BaseBows games in Mesa. Cheer for us, too.

  50. Da Punchbowl Kid May 27, 2011 8:51 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

No matter who are rivals are, in the end, they’re all athletes and sportsmen. We have more in common than we don’t. Nice finish to that story, where he says he loved Hawaii, and that folks threw lei to him after his last game here. That’s Hawai’i. And ultimately, thats sports… the ties that bind. Best wishes to Mr. Herren wherever he goes and whatever he does. God be with him.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid May 27, 2011 8:52 am

    But most importantly of all:

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    GO BASEBOWS!!!

    GO MONIZ!!!

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid May 27, 2011 8:55 am

Good morning slugger! How’s the mad russian these days?

    Hi Tom Mui!

And special shout out to Jojo! 😉

  53. Da Punchbowl Kid May 27, 2011 8:56 am

“who our rivals are” that should read above

  54. koakane May 27, 2011 8:56 am

chopsueyboy #45 was that man a small built haole man? if so his name is buddy who married by step dads neice. they had one boy (peter) and two girls. all attended Radford but he also played for Pal Eldridge after high school season ended. got into BYU from pal. father videoed UH games and sent to son. thus he was well prepared before the double header which UH lost.

also contributing to the poor showing was that UH couldn’t hit lefty which peter was and he played against most of them since they were many hawaiian high school player playing for coach les in those days.

  58. midori7 May 27, 2011 9:08 am

Chris Herren! I really HATED that guy! He ALWAYS got the best of us. My brother & I still refer to him to this day w/a nickname I won’t write here. Quite the competitor. Good to hear he’s living the clean life.

There was a SDSU basketball player w/last name of Betts. Can’t remember his first name. He always did well against us.

    chawan: Paul Nihipali

  59. HawaiiMongoose May 27, 2011 9:10 am

Re #22, I don’t really care what the BCS does about USC’s 2004 “national championship”. It’s only a mythical title. It wasn’t earned through a playoff. Two other teams finished undefeated that season. Taking the “championship” away doesn’t matter much when it was bogus to begin with.

  60. Manoa Mist May 27, 2011 9:16 am

You want a a UH enemy of the state?

Gene Stephenson of Wichita State. Had some classic battles with UH back in the 80s. I remember one baseball game he came up to the UH dugout and said he’d kick everyone’s azz.

The guy thought he was BJ Penn or something…

  61. Kazz May 27, 2011 9:20 am

    Yes indeed.

Penalize the BCS payout cost to a BCS conference school and that will hurt those smug bastards where it matters the most!!!

  63. d1shima May 27, 2011 9:25 am

    Great Morning All!

Good to hear that Chris Herren has straightened out. Best wishes to him; great competitor.

I recall the BYU TE who was flipping the bird to folks in the EZ after he scored a TD. Not that BYU needed anyone to further antagonize the Warrior faithful.

  67. GRM May 27, 2011 9:41 am

Yes ! ALSO Welcome to Coach Wallace — AND Thank You for help with the Post-Season — Although we MAY Be Biased, i’m Sure it took a Good, Legit Argument to get past any Continental Biases ….

AND then the Team backed it up — i’m SURE in the Future they won’t suffer as many Chicago/OK.City type End-of-Game Collapses and WILL win their share of tight games — due to Good-to-Great Defense, Options that the other team cannot quickly adjust to AND the ability to

Score at Will either as a team OR with individual Moxy …

those were some of the things i remember Chris Herren (and Danny Ainge — Arch Villain?) bringing to the court…BTW, when watching UH baseball (Go ‘Bows @ WAC Championships!) i was just thankful Danny Ainge Went PRO…) —

Stephen — REQUEST that you please forward this (Whole BLOG) to Chris Herren ‘cos he really could fill our Arena, as much as A.C. or Yuval and many of us just wished we would one day find a player like him — SAVO was pretty close (I AM SAVO!); HATE is NOT the Opposite of LOVE — it’s actually pretty close just flipped around –Indifference IS and Hawai’i was never Indifferent to Herren… and i too am gratified that he is finding his way AND passing along the lessons …

d1 – Dean — Thanks for the Updates

Chris Herron collegiately played at Boston College and Fresno State under Coach Jerry Tarkanian.

Herren was a 2nd round (33rd overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft. He played for the Nuggets and the Boston Celtics during his NBA career.

    #64 and #66

Byron Rex, 1992 TE AA. Hawaii, FSU and BYU had identical 6-2 records in the WAC standings; FSU overall was 9-4, and FSU was 8-5. 1992 Thrifty Car Rental Holiday Bowl, Hawaii 27 Illinois 17.

When Wahine volleyball was in the Big West Conference (1985-1996), Hawaii versus LBSU was the best rivalry in women’s volleyball. That rivalry ended when Hawaii departed the Big West in 1996 for the WAC.

The rivalry took off in 1989 when Gimmillaro’s team beat Hawaii in the regionals finals, coming back from a 2-1 deficit. The 49ers went on to win the NCAA championship, the first of three. Long Beach would beat Hawaii in the postseason in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994. Long Beach won 12 of 14 meetings from that 1989 postseason through 1994.

Per Gimmillaro, “some of our matches were the best college volleyball of all time. There’s no question in my mind; it’s just that the whole country didn’t see it. The country didn’t get to see both teams because one was always being eliminated in the regionals. The quality of those matches was great for the sport.”

That rivalry will resume starting 2012.

I agree. Everybody hated him and he loved it.

    Reno is out.

SJSU wins, 11-3 and plays LaTech at noon.

  88. haka May 27, 2011 11:23 am

If I remember correctly, Nihipali was hated because he flipped the bird to the Stanley crowd during a match. And if I remember right, he regretted it on his return visit the next year as the crowd booed his every touch and the Warriors beat the sulking bears.

In the case of Wisonsin, “Physical superiority cancels out all theory”.

…. Marshall Faulk was just “too good”.

  97. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2011 1:04 pm

I think UH was able to stop the triple-option teams — Navy, Army — because neither could pass. It’s always had trouble against wishbone teams, particularly those coached by Dennis Franchione.

    re: BCS antitrust suit

Unless you are a sitting judge on the Federal bench who has reviewed both sides, I am not going to believe a word someone say about there being or not being a case…especially if its coming from some sports writer.

The BCS hired the worlds best anti-trust attorney because they are probably going to need one to CYA.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 27, 2011 2:14 pm

Great to hear we are in discussion with South Bend and the Badgers about H-H series.

It sure as hell beats playing the University of the Ozarks and DaWho State College that we have seen.

Hoping for a Big 12 school to embrace us as well.

  115. Buffoman May 27, 2011 2:18 pm

That was our “Boris” (as in Dudley Doright cartoons), Chris Herron. Everyone’s correct, we really hated that guy. What a competitor.

I had a chance to speak with Marshall Faulk. His comment to me was he could not wait to come to play against UH when he was at SDSU. Whatever was ailing him in running stats were always cured after a game against us. He really like coming here and as a fan, I just hated it everytime he touched the ball.

The difference between him and Chris was probably that Chris had no facemask so we all saw his smirks and grine everytime he burned us. Marshall probably did the same running for 300 yards and then some.

Someone mentioned Jim Dietz. I hated that guys too.

Weren’t we lucky as fans to have had so many wonderful opponents who made the game so much fun? True agony and exstacy in a competitive contest…with attitude!

  116. bigislandkurt May 27, 2011 2:24 pm

Knowshon Moreno in the 2007 Sugar Bowl. Especially that touchdown he had where he he waived off the crowd and almost implored the Warriors to tackle him. It was almost too easy.

Ron Dayne was quite our nemesis too.

Great job K49! Stand downs were an annual part of our Drive to Survive campaign at Ft. Bragg, NC.

The first one served several thousand Vets in a tent city set up. It attracted even more every year thereafter. Free Medical, Dental, and Hearing exams led to immediate followup treatment.

Showers, haircuts, clothing and a warm place to sleep was top of the list. The food chain was

endless, and ono for all who came with an appetite.

K-49, if you remember where the parachute riggers tower was on post, that was the perfect marker for the event. It grew to a more semi-permanent spot later.

On a weekend like this, I’m so glad to hear that you are still serving proudly. I salute you my brother.

    AIRBORNE!

  125. Derek May 27, 2011 3:00 pm

Once upon a time, BYU was the mosted hated because we couldn’t beat them in football. No that we can regularly, after giant killer Garrett Gabriel and Company annihilated the him I would say the most hated team right now is Boise State, only because that little State and that little university is so good for some reason. Imagine losing to a team from Idaho state, not Idaho St. Univ. We are envious of Boise’s success in football and they are everything that we aspire and there is no reason why we can beat them every year. Frankly, I think the reason is because Chris Peterson is just a great coach and knows how to get the most out of his players. Before Peterson, Boise St. was pretty good, but not like they are now. The fact that they lost to Nevada shockingly last year shows there is some hope that maybe things will change in the very near future, like when Kellen Moore leaves after this upcoming season…..hehe, hehe!

From Maui News: Sad Day in Maui…this happen in front of Kids.

WAILUKU – Police officers responded to an assault Monday night during a Little League game at Maehara Stadium when a coach upset about a call shoved and punched an umpire, police said.

The incident was reported at 7:55 p.m. during a Little League junior division game between a Lahaina team and a Wailuku team, said acting Sgt. Chris Schmitt of the Community Relations Section.

A coach reportedly didn’t like a call the umpire was making and went up to the umpire to argue the call, Schmitt said. The argument turned physical, with the 36-year-old coach initially pushing and shoving to the ground the 27-year-old umpire. The coach then began punching the umpire before other adults intervened, he said.

None of the players, who are ages 13 and 14, was involved, Schmitt said.

RE: Paying for the “true cost” of education for student athletes

First of all, we should all be skeptical when words like “student athlete” or “helping our scholarship athlete” are spewed from the mouth James Delany…This coming from the man that said “If we had a NFL-style playoff, we would make 3x 4x MORE MONEY than the current system in place”

If this “idea”…and its just that an IDEA, were to somehow make its way to become the rule, can UH afford an extra $1M a year to keep up?

RE: Auto AQ bid for 2 years

I agree that we need to do what we can to ensure we help elevate the MWC by winning our OOC games. We have the perfect opportunity this year to do well since both BCS teams CU and UW combined are part of the weaker half of the PAC12.

We should also hope (hope hard) that the bottom dwellers of the MWC (read: UNM, UNLV, UW) can step it up and win their OCC games as well. If these teams can do even 20% better than previous years, and the upper crust like Boise St. continue to do well, there is no way the BCS should be able to deny us access.

It really is in the hands of the bottom of the MWC at this point.

    #149,

Yep…very very hard. UNLV has always been called a “sleeper” program in football etc…well that hasn’t developed into anything. I don’t know much about the direction of UNM and Wyoming.

AF is solid…SDSU (with their 1 good season last year) will hopefully hold its own.

Its a tough fight but if these schools want the money, they better be in it to win it.

al, you hire the top attorney(s) for any court preceedings cause you neva know what going happen in court or congress. reporters are paid to write and report stories, but when a reporter tries to insert thier legal decisions or conclusions to the story, he or she loses their creditability. the bcs likes to think that they are not going to lose, but stranger things have happened when congress makes laws. title ix is a very good example.

  177. whitey May 27, 2011 11:50 pm

al, sorry about not having lunch, but there is always the next time.

  178. whitey May 27, 2011 11:55 pm

one of the huge questions is how does the bcs give exemption to the independents and not to all div 1a conferences?? favoritism, preferential treatment, prejudices, disdain, etc are all part of the bcs and they will have to answer all of those question.

  179. whitey May 27, 2011 11:58 pm

with usc on probation and not allowed to participate in bowls for 2 years, will their win lost count?? they are crooks along with ohio state. so the bcs rewards conferences for schools on ncaa probation or those who violate ncaa rules. what a joke!!!

I’m surprised about the Aussie recruit. I thought the eligibility clock starts right after high school.

hate to say this, but, that coach should be banned from coaching in the little league association.

more than one punch indicates some anger management issues.

  205. Stephen Tsai May 28, 2011 1:41 am

    Curt:

The eligibility clock starts once a person is a full-time student.

UH is going after a guy who was a part-time student for a few years. The guy already has accumulated 56 credits, even though he has been a full-time student for only two semesters. He has four years to play three seasons.

I have my doubts about Congress intervening and the DOJ making a winning argument that would put an end to the BCS. I am one who believes that when it comes to a word like “antitrust”…us common folk and even most attorneys or those with legal training do not understand the complexities. Therefore we (the common folk) can throw around that word all we want because it seems, feels, and looks like an antitrust violation but it may in fact not be. It’s like discrimination…so many times it may seem, feel, and look like discrimination, but in eyes of the law it is not.

The fact that the BCS has retained the worlds top attorney on antitrust says everything and absolutely nothing. What did it mean when OJ hired arguably the best defense attorneys in the world like F Lee Bailey, Alan Dershowitz, and Barry Scheck?

  207. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 28, 2011 2:41 am

Being the slow thinker, I just realized the huge difference between billion dollar TV deals and BCS bowl payouts…While the payouts are nice, they are the coins jingling in ones pocket compared to media deals.

Pac-12 TV deal is like 2 billion dollars…PLUS there are secondary media rights that Larry Scott has claimed is worth another billion or so. That is anywhere between $20,000,000-$40,000,000+ per school!

The BCS distributes something like $150,000,000 to ALL BIG SIX CONFERENCES…If we were given the same payout as the PAC-12, we are talking like an additional $1M per school in the MWC…Nice but not impressive right?

BCS AQ status is the “ultimate goal” that the MWC wants…but what they really want is a fat mofo TV deal. And unfortunately…viewership, TV sets, and a pretty name is what drives these deals…The MWC lacks that from what I can tell.

The MWC can get its BCS status…but putting lipstick on a pig wont make it worth $200,000,000/year.

It comes down to what we want and what we can reasonably expect. If MWC gets the AQ status, there will be a lot of people out there that will think we are now on equal playing field with PAC12 or Big 10 when that will simply not be the case.
