End around

Defensive end Ipulasi “Lasi” Eselu is on the Warriors’ roster as a non-scholarship player.

Eselu was nearly lost in transition after meeting UH’s entry requirements this past fall. Eselu made an oral commitment to the Warriors in July 2009, but did not meet the requirements to be part of the 2010 recruiting class.

Eselu agreed to pay his own way this semester.

* * * * *

The Warriors are seeking relief help on their scholarship numbers. Ellis Henderson, who is enrolled at Portland State, reportedly still counts as an initial scholarship for UH.

Henderson signed with UH in February 2012, but opted to grayshirt after undergoing shoulder surgery. He was enrolled at UH as a part-time student during the fall semester. After that, he decided to transfer. Henderson and his family have been helpful in trying to get him off the UH books.

    β€Ž$1,000,000 for Hawaii Football.

Are you tired of hearing everyone say that UH doesn’t have those million dollar donors those big schools like USC do? If we can get 100,000 fans to donate $10 each; then we will have $1,000,000 to make a difference and show our support to Coach Chow and his staff’s recruiting efforts. As we know, recruiting is the lifeline of any football program. So let us all start by forwarding this message to everyone we know.

Please make your 100% tax-deductible donation to the “Warrior Nation Fund”, a new UH Foundation Fundβ€”just click on the following link:

    https://www.uhfoundation.org/give/givin … 4&site=AKA

Mahalo, Tom Kitaguchi. After making your donation, you will receive an email confirmation from the UH Foundation–pls. forward that to me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

so I can let you all know how much we have raised toward our goal.

… Below is an email from the President of UH Foundation’s AKA to me:

    Dear Tom,

Thank you for all of your efforts to raise funds for Warrior football. We greatly appreciate your support and leadership as president of the Warrior Nation group. As indicated, all the funds raised will directly support Coach Chow’s needs not covered by his athletics budget and be up to his discretion on how it is spent. When Coach needed funding for knee braces, your group stepped up and delivered.

On behalf of UH Athletics, thank you again for your support. Mahalo.

    AL #28 – any time!

  33. kev-1 March 11, 2012 9:42 am

I don’t understand the seemingly silly scholie rules. If Henderson is no longer with the school, his scholie should be cleared. Of course, that would make too much sense.

  34. kev-1 March 11, 2012 9:44 am

Al . . . for all of those who think Hawaii doesn’t stand a chance with the san mateo monster, if he truly wasn’t torn, he would have made his decision already. Not saying that we’ll get him in the long run, but at least he is seriously considering it.

  35. jm2375 March 11, 2012 9:44 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

ST – Ellis Henderson signed in 2011, not 2012, right? Thanks to the Henderson family for helping UH out.

    Congrats to Mr. Eselu.

    GO WAHINE!

  36. SteveM March 11, 2012 9:45 am

    Good morning everyone!

Daylight Savings Time kicked in this morning. Doesn’t affect us in Hawaii, but our mainland friends and family are now one more hour ahead of us until November.

  38. kev-1 March 11, 2012 9:51 am

There you go . . . the final reason the san mateo monster should choose Hawaii . . . he doesn’t have to change his watch everytime daylight savings rolls around.

  39. d1shima March 11, 2012 10:01 am

    jmxxxx,

Some will take SAT’s right up thru grad time.

Some will wish they could add up all the scores from all their attempts! 😈

    ST,

Mahalo for the update on Lasi! Good to hear that he’s finally a WARRIOR!

BTW, any info on future plans for his younger brother DE Nainoa ’12?….or OL Chris Loyd ’12 (younger brother of current Warrior OL Frank Jr.)?

  41. kapakahi March 11, 2012 10:27 am

    #40 & #42,

Usually means that it’s not the 1st time that he’s taking the test….since must take at least once in order to take official school recruiting trips….which he definitely did. Probably also means that he still needs to improve his test score too.

  42. kapakahi March 11, 2012 10:28 am

Pomai ~ Game on as planned today.

  44. Stephen Tsai March 11, 2012 10:53 am

As I understand it, if a player signs a letter, then the scholie is binding, especially when the player is academically eligible.

There’s no option to make the scholie retro to 2011, because UH used up all of those scholies. It becomes a 2012 counter.

  45. Stephen Tsai March 11, 2012 10:54 am

Teams are limited to 25 initials. So even if there’s room, only 25 new guys can play under initial scholarships in 2012. That’s why it’s important to clear off players who are no longer here.

  46. Stephen Tsai March 11, 2012 10:55 am

    Re: SATs

As I understand it, a player must take the SAT (or ACT) β€” regardless if a qualifying score is attained β€” in order to go on a recruiting trip.

  47. jm2375 March 11, 2012 11:00 am

It’s just that, by now, acceptance letters are going out from the colleges, right? So, why even bother taking the standardized tests again? Or does a different standard apply to scholarship athletes than the average student?

  48. mctruck March 11, 2012 11:18 am

checkin out LSU’s 2012 recruiting, they already have a couple hs-recruits similar in size & weight to da-big guy on UH’s wish list; on top of that a bunch of veterans of equal size already on the roster. So?????, competition at that position at LSU is deep.

That being said, I think da big guy is a bit perplexed which way to go….especially considering he has just 2 yrs. of shelf life left. Mo-beta go UH big guy.

remarkable the type of athletes we are going after (marcus baugh). it demonstrates just how much our program has been asleep for decades and how low our expectations have become over the years through mediocrity. Chow & Co have set the bar high….now, fans need to do likewise.

  74. A=House March 11, 2012 4:07 pm

I too, appreciate how Coach Chow is approaching recruiting, but offering and accepting are to quite different animals.

Yes, if there is no offer how can there be acceptance.

Perhaps the San Mateo OL will be the catalyst in going after and signing those 4* and 5* players from the mainland. Hope that the commitment by the Kahuku OL will have the same ripple effect for the “local” players.

Shoud all this and more come to pass in Coach Chow’s first 3 years, blessed will be the Warrior program – say, not bad for a Buddhist!!

Not sure what it is….but I just gotta believe that at least one of UH coaches must have some kind of connection to SoCal Inland Empire (IE) schools since the Warriors have already made scholie offers to 7 IE players thus far (including to 5 of the IE’s top 10 prospects).

wahine used the long ball to extend their record for consecutive game victories to twenty-one, with a 4-0 win over Marist in the nightcap of a doubleheader at wahine softball stadium.

Makani took it yard for a solo HR in the 3rd. Li’ili’i followed with another solo blast to center in the 5th and Iwata’s two-run shot to left came in the 6th with a runner on.

Earlier the wahine beat Robert Morris 9-0 in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

Wahine are now 21-0, ranked 19th and will host #2 California, #6 Texas and #21 T A&M in this week’s Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

This will prolly be the last chance for Hawai’i to ascend in the rankings against top-ranked teams. Conference play starts the following week.

    The PAC 12 has seven-teams ranked ahead of Hawai’i–Calif #2, WASH #4, ASU #5, Stanf #10, ARIZ # 13, UCLA #17 and Oregon #18.

The wahine have beaten two ranked teams 4Xs–#22 FSU (2x) and #25 Depaul (2x).

Ricketts threw 12.0 innings giving up one run on six hits with five walks and 18 strike outs. Parnaby tossed a pair of shut outs with a walk and 12 strike outs. Both pitchers held opponents to a .146 batting average.

Lots of talk about decision, UH or LSU, but still no resolution on question: “Is he an NCAA clearinghouse qualifier?” LSU is agreat place to be a football player, but will it be a place where your skills will stand out? Even that dude Michael Mohrer (sp?) from the move “The Blind Side” stood out because he was on a weaker SEC team and he over-achieved. I remember that David Veikune ate him up in some bowl practices and made a name for himself before the NFL draft.

For most up-to-date information you have to go to see world-wide-web and on the web I found this web site as a most excellent web page for most up-to-date updates.

  107. e-cigs March 12, 2012 5:40 am

I have found kicking the habit is actually almost impossible. I started cigarette smoking while I was 14 years old. It absolutely was the worst wrong move I’ve made. Now I’m much older and I have coronary artery disease. I tested every one of the stopping tricks yet none helped me stop. My last try is definitely the electric cigarette in the end.

Mililani raining again. Must be true that the Japan earthquake shifted the earth’s axis just a little bit. It feels like winter still in the 60s here. I remember September and October was kind of warm and Dec. and Nov. wasn’t as cold as previous years too.

  115. Couch potato March 12, 2012 7:53 am

congrats to Leisha Liβ€˜iliβ€˜i for bieng named the WAC hitter of the week.

  116. Steve March 12, 2012 8:19 am

Congrats Leisha Li’ili’i, a phenom in the making. There is not a pitch she cannot hit. Pitch her on the outside, it is high up on the screen in left field. Pitch her in the middle, it is into the tennis courts. Pitch her on the inside, over the scoreboard in right field. In time she will be the most dangerous hitter in college softball.

  117. jkjones March 12, 2012 8:59 am

Both frosh Li’ili’i (8:7) and Wartner (12:12) have respectable BB:KO ratios. A good indication of a “seeing” hitter.

Other wahine with 1.0 or better:

    Majam (17:12), Iwata (8:7) and Aquire (9:8).

Others: Robinson (7:10), Pagaduan (5:13), Sharla (6:18) and Makani (1:14).

Also impressive with Li’ili’i, she bats in the No 7 spot and leads the team in OB% @ .517.

Enabling the No 8 and 9 hitters (Makani and Pagaduan) to produce 21 rbi’s between them. That averages to one rbi per game for the bottom of the order! outstanding!
