Double day; Colonials are pau

This is the first day of double practice.

In the morning session:

• Right wideout Royce Pollard was absent while taking a final exam. That meant none of the starting receivers practiced. Left wideout Darius Bright still is bothered by a turf toe, and left slotback Billy Ray Stutzmann and right slotback Miah Ostrowski have “tweaked” hamstrings.

• Cecil Doe was this morning’s first-team right wideout.

• Left cornerback Tank Hopkins suffered a minor ankle injury that did not require treatment. Mike Edwards practiced as the No. 1 left corner; John Hardy-Tuliau was the right corner. When the Warriors were in the 45 defense, Hardy-Tuliau moved to nickelback and Kawika Ornellas entered as the right corner.

• Scout teams, er, service teams were established. As expected, Jeremy Higgins was the service quarterback. It was interesting to see left tackle Austin Hansen with the service team. Hansen is serving an NCAA suspension that expires at the end of the regular season.

• Defensive tackle Haku Correa and his fiancee, Mahea Cabbab, welcomed their daughter this morning. Zaydah Lindsey Correa weighed 9 pounds, 14 ounces.

The Hartford Colonials of the UFL today were shut down. Their roster included former Warriors Colt Brennan, Jacob Patek, Ryan Grice-Mullins and Brysen “Bula” Ginlack. Former UH defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville was the head coach.

* * * * *

From yesterday’s practice:

Allen Sampson has been doing a fine job as Darius Bright’s replacement. Sampson is sporting his new golden smile: He has caps on two teeth.

Right wideout Jett Jasper has been working out with the 2s:

David Graves, the backup to Bryant Moniz and Shane Austin, also has been getting a lot of reps:

Without a video tower for practices at the grass field, video coordinator Chris Williams has to shoot from the grassy knoll:

After practice, associate head coach Rich Miano tutors cornerback Mike Edwards:

Did I mention that safety Steve Christian is now in camp?

Discount tickets (50 yd line) for San Jose St. road game.

I have 50 yard line seats in Section 130; about 20 rows up, behind our Warriors bench, at $25 each; group rate–and I have 10 tickets left. All together we will have 200+ Warrior fans sitting in these 10 rows, from row 12 to 21. You can’t get these kine seats at any other stadium. Watch them perform the haka right in front of us–a definite chicken skin moment! This will be the last game at San Jose on Oct. 14, 6pm–a friday nite game!

    Email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

ps: The UH sections will be in the corner end zone (section 134 and 135) and those were $45.

Will be there this morning to check out practice.

    Posting again from yesterday’s…

For any active/retired military/DoD civilians, Nellis AFB billeting has rooms available for the weekend of the UH-UNLV game if you want to save some cash.

  7. Bugaz August 10, 2011 6:19 am

What about MAC flights, any from Hickam to Nellis?

  8. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 6:20 am

Saluting Sailor Blue for his service, duty and honor, along with a birthday greeting.

Buff countdown getting close to the teens, then you know it’s getting serious.

    2 senior QB’s going mano e mano

Freshman kicker named for CU yesterday, what about Hawaii?

Is Bright going to be fully recovered by the time season starts if he keeps playing on it? I remember last year Moniz was plagued by turf-toe all season long.

    HB Sailor Blue!!

Tom – Thanks for the email tips on mailing out tix. I completely forgot to tell everyone to make sure their SASE is legal size.

    UH vs UNLV TIX

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE A LEGAL SIZED SASE IN YOUR ORDER.

  13. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 6:29 am

Darn hamstrings that are strained >>> darn flashbacks of Pilares last season rotates in my memory.

They just don’t go away, especially when your a receiver running routes endlessly.

  14. rich2176 August 10, 2011 6:32 am

BTW, I can’t believe the UH ticket office charges $10/ticket for processing & handling. The face value of those seats is $41 + $2 charge from Sam Boyd Stadium. (It appears UH didn’t have to pay the additional $1 per ticket like I did.) BUT, it’s a darn shame that UNLV didn’t extend a disount to UH for visitor seats.

  30. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 6:54 am

  32. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 6:56 am

I think the HawaiianTel case is going to have an interesting impact for DirecTV.

  33. Shoko August 10, 2011 6:58 am

Anyone thinking of attending the Nevada game in November?

  34. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:01 am

    Shoko:

That’s the best time to get out of town. It’s going to be crazy in Honolulu that week.

  35. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:06 am

    Shoko:

Not sure how I-80 is going to be that time of year. You might want to consider taking a puddle-jumper from S.F. to Reno.

  36. Old Diver August 10, 2011 7:07 am

After much thought I think I have come up with the tower replacement solution. A human ladder. Unlike Aloha Stadium it won’t be subject to rust and it will be moveable.

  37. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:09 am

There was one estimate that said a permanent tower, with a viewing area for some fans, would cost $100,000.

  38. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 7:15 am

Nothing like being on solid ground. :>

  39. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 7:15 am

    100K is ridiculous

  40. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 7:18 am

Hawaiian tel won’t capture the mkt size that directv has, or be able to compete. Problem with HT, is you need to commit to the land line service before any other option. As I do with their DSL service.

With directv, its no muss, no fuss. Been with them since they came into the picture. I dumped Dish with hyperspeed action.

  41. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 7:22 am

I was really happy when HT offered that net service for the UH football. Party pack was around $ 12 , if i recall right, then with the promotion code, it came down to around 7.00. For the entire season, not a bad deal. Sometimes it would buffer, I like how they archived it for re-watching, which wouldn’t buffer. That was the 06 – 07 season.

ESPN3 is now the the site to follow. Their archive section is great and HD.

  42. Hawnstln August 10, 2011 7:24 am

    Rich2176:

R we meeting soon for the tickets or do U want me to mail you my check? Let me know what you want to do. Maybe Ronnie can join us??

  43. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:26 am

    CoolEthan:

One of the players told me his family paid for the Internet version, then hooked it up to the big screen TV. They had UH parties.

  44. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:27 am

    Rich2176:

Thanks for organizing everything in Vegas.

  45. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 7:29 am

I wanna do that with the new broadcasting crew. Blast the game over a HD projector on the big wall, Big BBQ, Big Cocktails, and let the 3 amigos strut their stuff, getting them ready for the Aggies game.

  46. Kevin August 10, 2011 7:29 am

    $100,000.00 mainland.

$375,000.00 and add 5 months waiting time for Hawaii.

Might need to form a committee to decide on the brand of lift.

  47. rich2176 August 10, 2011 7:30 am

    Hawnstln –

Go ahead and mail me a check. My schedule is really nuts right now. I’m hoping to get the seating chart done by Friday and start sending out tix.

    Thanks,

Good morning folks! Happy Birthday Sailor Blue!

Bobby Vinton’s voice pops into my head, “I’m Mr. Blue wah-o-wah-ooo….”. SB is anything but low energy what with his high energy smile!

  49. Kevin August 10, 2011 7:33 am

Maybe if you nix the viewing area for fans, would that shave the cost?

I mean its not necessary just as long as the camera operator(s) can access it thay is good enough.

Watching practice is a bonus for us fans and NOT a “right”. Just grateful we are given the opportunity.

  50. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:34 am

Woo hoo. I just got my access code.

Now I can read Ferd’s story about Oceanic.

  51. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 7:35 am

    ST,

Yea, the I-80 corridor can be unpredictable during that time of year, but I usually take my chances, and it has never failed me (at least for football games). *Shoko crosses finger* 🙂

  55. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:37 am

    Kevin:

It was going to come with other features.

One thing UH needs is a training room near the grass field. Not just for football but for soccer, too.

Way it is now, if somebody gets hurt, the player has to be taken by cart to the athletic complex.

  56. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2011 7:38 am

    Shoko:

    I-80 is amazing, isn’t it?

You go the other way, you can hit up wine country.

  62. Last Call August 10, 2011 7:58 am

Who has time to stay on top of their medication during these austere times???

  64. LizKauai August 10, 2011 7:59 am

    Haha, Rich… sleep???

CoolEthan- I’m happy with Dish on Kauai. Looking forward to an EQUITABLE ARRANGEMENT with Oceanic that prevents a monopoly on ALL UH Sports Broadcasts.

Even better- how about feeding HawaiiStream a webcast so ALL fans can enjoy it on the net!

OCEANIC: HAWAII is not ONLY OAHU… and NOT ONLY YOU…

    Ok.

Glad I got that off my mind.

    GO WARRIORS!

  65. LizKauai August 10, 2011 8:04 am

    Oh yeah.

The SA has doe a good thing by charging less for people further away from Oahu. I appreciate that.

If OCEANIC did the same, neighbor island Season Ticket Holders not on their system and people outside of Hawaii might feel better if they could watch the UH Channel online for free/reduced rates…

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 10, 2011 8:12 am

I wonder how much it would cost to rent one of those cherry picker bucket trucks…

I remember people like T. George Paris on Na Koa. I am sure someone could kindly ask him to poke around the Building Trades group to see if they have an extra one to lend UH for the season or for a few days a week.

  67. Stretch August 10, 2011 8:13 am

    Kevin – obviously not everyone

  68. LizKauai August 10, 2011 8:15 am

    http://tweetmeme.com/about/fail_redirect

Also- the facebook SHARE button is defaulting to basic SA info without pictures, story header or summary so I am copying and pasting my own stuff…

  69. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 8:25 am

Liz- The feeding streams on the net is currently taking a back seat. FCC coming down hard and has control on those past, reliable sites.

  70. Last Call August 10, 2011 8:26 am

Oceanic’s policy that fans in Hawai`i can’t watch games and matches online unless they’re an Oceanic Internet subscriber is bull crap.

They’re missing an opportunity to bring in more income from loyal HawaiianTel DSL subscribers especially on the neighbor islands who can’t and never will be able to afford PPV or would switch to Oceanic’s internet service.

  71. Last Call August 10, 2011 8:28 am

  74. Da Puncbowl Kid August 10, 2011 8:37 am

So Liz, that is for an audio stream only?

  75. A-joe August 10, 2011 8:39 am

  91. Garret August 10, 2011 9:41 am

When thinking about the naming rights for the field that Hawaiian Airlines is paying for, it looks like they are paying market value…which makes their helping UH with travel costs in addition to the money they are paying quite generous.

Naming a field should bring less money than naming a stadium. Rutgers is getting $650k/year for the naming rights to their stadium, Texas Tech got $800k/year for the naming rights to their stadium, Troy is getting $250k/year for the naming rights for their stadium. Maryland is getting $800k/year for the naming rights to their field, but they are in an area with a lot of big-money companies.

Texas is getting nearly $1 mil/year for the naming rights to their baseball stadium…UFCU Disch–Falk Field is named after 2 former baseball coaches (Disch and Falk), with the local Credit Union for the University paying naming rights.

  93. A-joe August 10, 2011 9:44 am

A call to our Tsaiko men and women who have and still are serving our military branches:

Take a look at this video of John Stewart from the Daily Show. He went to Kandahar over the weekend to meet and greet our troops. The troops asked for him to give shout outs to them. John wore several shirts in their honor. The first shirt he has on has a Hawaiian Flag Insignia. Can any of you identify it?

Major props to our armed force men n women of our islands. Proud of them all!

  94. Garret August 10, 2011 9:48 am

With all the controversy over the Longhorn Network, it is interesting to note that Florida is getting $8.2 mil/year from Sun Sports for their local TV rights (no PPV, it is on a sports channel). The network that shows University of Florida sporting events all the time also shows high school football games, including a lot of games with recruits that have committed to Florida.

It is also interesting to note that Texas owns 0% of the Longhorn Network. If ESPN had just called the channel “ESPN 4” and put all of the Texas games on that channel, they could show high school games (just like ESPNU) without the controversy. Or they could have called it “ESPN Texas” and had an excuse to show Texas Longhorn games plus Texas high school games.

    Morning!

Today, UH’s Website highlights the running backs…

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/8/8/FB_0808115526.aspx

Also includes a video interview with Brian Smith.

  98. Garret August 10, 2011 9:54 am

Funny about the complaining over my off-topic links since I stopped doing them a *long* time ago (3-6 months?). When I thought that the balance between UH football talk and off-topic stuff was too far away from football, I stopped my off-topic links.

I haven’t even mentioned that the Make-A-Wish Foundation deserves major credit for doing such a wonderful thing for the family of my daughter’s best friend. They quickly put together a wonderful Disneyland trip for their family that is going on right now…and they had to get everything set up quickly since that 8-year-old boy’s lifetime is being measured in days, not months.

GARRET #97- some people always bitch about one thing or the other.

Most of them have nothing better to do.

I, for one, miss those odd bits of information.

And best wishes to you and yours.

#42 I think I will hold off on PPV for now thanks ST

    better buy per game?

#32 Thanks ST for reminding that week. I was thinking of going to Reno but guess not with APEC coming.

No harm asking my boss for weekend off but I doubt it. I will be on shift working somewhere that weekend. I think no one in our office gets vacation that week.

I also wanted to take advantage of #4 tom-warriornation deal to San Jose at $25 for 50 yard-line, but I’ll be in Beijing, China that day and will need to find wifi or ESPN channel. Is there a Sports Bar in Bejing? I hope so.

I’ll will also be missing the following week New Mexico State will be in Shanghai. Dam I’ve never missed this much Warrior’s game.

    Garret:

I definitely enjoy your non-sports posts – for those who don’t want to read them, just skip over them.

We got an invite in the mail recently to buy some of the away game coverage for $99, but that really doesn’t make much $$$$ sense for us. I’d rather go to a sports bar or listen to the game on the radio while working in the yard. Besides, our tv set is about as old as my computer – circa 2003.

Asked a question yesterday which no one answered: Wassup with Colt Brennan?

  118. RedZone August 10, 2011 10:26 am

It looks like Jon Embree really wants to win his first game. His team already is practicing in full pads and intends to pick his travel squad to Hawaii today. He has converted a couple of linebackers to fullbacks and has been stressing mental toughness. He has been having his offense starting out at their own 2-3 yard line making them march down the field. And they have done this with some success. The thing that bothers me the most is that Colorado will be a cut blocking team and I want the Warriors to come out of the game healthy.

  119. d1shima(Aria'd) August 10, 2011 10:33 am

    Redzone,

Nice to hear that Buffs’ D is consistently incapable of stopping 98-yd drives!

As far as a ball-control offense consistently maintaining extended drives in practice, they’ll find it much harder to do once real-game officials start watching for infractions.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAILORBLUE !!!

  123. Kevin August 10, 2011 10:52 am

New UA hats at Rainbowtique Ward location and three new visors.

Mentioning these because they are not on the website yet and just came out a few days ago.

One Hat is primarily white with black and green trim wrapping around the brim and is a fitted UA hat.

Two other UA hats are in a simpler solid one color style with the stylish visible stiching pattern on the brim. Saw Black and Green.

The visors are in three primary colors green, black, and white with matching opposite trim similar to the fitted hat.

The fitted hat and the three visors display more “vibrance” than previous designs.

Slightly cheaper at $29.00 for all these head gear items. Previously $30.00.

Good quality all black UH UA windbreaker style jacket with a hood. $60.00. All black, with H on front chest and UA logo on upper left sleeve. Wrists are velcro adjustable. Quantity running low though seems like a lot of people bought these.

Since the deal is with the Stadium Authority, wonder how much of the $2.5 million will actually to to UH?

    Coconut wireless says 10% or less – say it’s 10% =s $25,000/year?

The H on the visors are significantly smaller than the hats, but for obvious reasons.

The UA hats have other options, such as the ones that simply have “Hawaii” on the front in the tapa UH print and it’s not that big at all either.

    ST,

Yea, the I-80 corridor can be unpredictable during that time of year, but I usually take my chances, and it has never failed me (at least for football games). *Shoko crosses finger*

Shoko — did you know that Curveball plans to attend the Nevada game too and is also driving? I think he also lives near you. 🙂

So who else is going to the other UH road games his year?

Who can get-together for a tailgate or pre- and post-game Cattle Call? Where?

Info like this is gathered at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away11.html

…and the attendees can make make plans among themselves if they wish.

Please send me your tentative game plans/lodging location.

Note that only blog names are listed.

email: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com (please include your blog name if not obvious).

I will facilitate email contact among attendees (a week before the game)–who may then optionally share real names, cell phone numbers, etc. at their discretion.

Though I read it infrequently, it’s too bad Garret has decided to stop blogging on Warrior Quotes.

As always, his reasoning is sound though a sad commentary on the state of media in Hawaii.

  147. A-House August 10, 2011 12:02 pm

    Kevin:

my “big birdie” told me 10% or less to UHAD.

This is one big advantage that mailand colleges have with “on campus” stadiums. They get all or most of the “bread”.

Now, if you or I were members of the Stadium Authority, what % would we give to UH based on the “needs” of the stadium?

I’m still amazed at the cost disparity of putting in new turf for Hawaii and a mainland location. Likewise, the cost to build a new stadium and length of time it would take.

If an individual would give UH $300-500 million to build on on-campus stadium, wonder what the State would do to prevent that occurrence? UH is the major tenant or user of the stadium. I always presumed that the stadium was built for UH football games. Flea market is a drop in the bucket in terms of income and there seems to be no effort by the Stadium Authority to schedule other events – yes, they have done some, but few and far between.

Often wondered how much taxes are collected from “vendors” at the flea market. Anyone know?

The team’s owner will take control of the Virginia franchise.”

  154. Kekoa August 10, 2011 12:13 pm

Shoko ~ As you know the Chain Control area can drop all the way down the mountain just outside of Colfax. If that’s the case, you know you are in for a mighty LONG drive.

Add an additional 2 hours to your usual drive time.

If it’s only down to Kingvale, it’s only about 30 minutes longer than the normal 90 minute trek from Sacramento to Reno. Always carry chains, even if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Chain monkeys will put them on, for a price…but it’s illegal for them to sell to you. Troopers at chain control will turn you around and send you back down the mountain!

  155. Candy August 10, 2011 12:16 pm

Why can’t they bury anchors to the rear or front at a 45 degree angle from the corners of where they normally put the scissors lift and install guy wires to keep the things from the effects of excessive wind gusts. There is normally a backhoe behind the fence that could dig the holes for the anchors.

“Turf foe” LOL, that’s hilarious and funny. Gotta keep an eye out for that ole “turf foe” that lives by the turf. LOL. It comes to DEL MAR racetrack San Diego too. It is hanging out with the surf. You know, “WHERE THE SURF MEETS THE TURF AT DEL MAR.” What does the “turf foe” look like? Ok, well maybe I’m making to much of it. I just understand athletes get the problem and it’s a mysterious ailment and name for it. Get well soon fellas!

I really didn’t like turf. I remember my school got turf, then took it out because it was causing injuries to us. Yes, it’s almost non-maintenance, but for everyday practices, not good.

On another note, many people were blogging about KC BBQ. It’s a great spot downtown and a sure tourist attraction. The prices are OK. Outdoor seating too, so you can see the people walking by and looking at your meal. LOL. When we go there, we are always laughing and talking loud. It had a fire a while ago, so I hadn’t gone there in a while though. It is a good spot to go to before going to see the Padres play at Petco park. Also a cool place.

Sad news for Colt, but not surprising since the entire UFL will probably close soon. I remember posting the article about how they had no TV deal, could not start the season without a TV deal, and were actually being sued by the company that had their TV deal last season.

I hope that the UFL players get a shot somewhere, but quite a bit of the CFL season is over and the NFL camps are full and about to go through cuts. I think that the AFL season is over also. Brutal timing…

BUT, at least the beer quality is a little better. When it was Magoos I swear you’d order a Guinness and you could see through the pitcher. Yeah, not a good sign.

  193. Pomai August 10, 2011 1:37 pm

#146 – A-House – I thought that I read somewhere that the flea market was actually a big money maker for the stadium, more than UH football, which I could understand because they are open I think four days a week every week.

  194. Kevin August 10, 2011 1:38 pm

    Location.. location… location……

    Magoos/Varsity/Rock Bottom bar… all “stumbling” distance to the dorms! 😆 😆 😆

  195. rich2176 August 10, 2011 1:39 pm

    UH vs UNLV

Since I don’t have the time to send out individual emails, I’m confirming that as of today I’ve received payments (and some very, very generous), from the following:

    SteveM

    99club

    Brew808

    d1shima

    Kekoa

    L10pc

    LizKauai

    SailorBlue

    UKU@la

    wafan & Izzy

    A-House

That’s a pretty high percentage considering I just got the tix last week. Seating chart is kinda hard this year since we’ve got a few pukas. Like, I’ve got one row where we’ve got seats 1-11, then 13-16. Don’t know why we didn’t get 12. Bottom line is that we’ll have tix and will figure it out!

  196. Kevin August 10, 2011 1:41 pm

While the flea market is open three days a week annually, I still cannot fathom how they can make more than UH.

Considering how much UH has to pay to play there, then add on all the concession sales and the non-AKA parking stall revenue, plus the advertisement sales, etc…

I think the figure I remember seeing UH having to pay the stadium is over $400,000.00 per season. I could be wrong and God I hope I am. 😡

  197. Garret August 10, 2011 1:41 pm

    WassupDoc,

I basically addressed your question about Colt when I posted about how the timing of the NFL lockout ending came at the absolutely worst possible time for him. If the lockout went longer, the UFL season would have started and NFL teams could have seen that he’s healthy enough to play, plus they would get game film on him. If the lockout ended quicker, the training camps would have been longer and NFL teams could give Colt a tryout. However, a shortened training camp meant that NFL teams only signed players that they felt were ready to play with no health issues…even proven vets like Vince Manuwai got cut when they were injured at the start of camp.

I remember when I posted my (longer) explanation on the blog I was accused on not believing in Colt. The fact is that I *do* believe in Colt, but I’m not important…NFL scouts have to believe in him for him to get a chance. The fact is that NFL scouts cannot afford to just believe or they will lose their jobs, and Colt has had so many surgeries since he left UH and is recovering from a catastrophic car accident.

Colt needs a chance to play so that NFL teams can see film on him. He and his agents chose the UFL and gave good reasons for that, but the gamble did not pay off. However, the CFL and AFL might not have been good options for him since they started their training camps earlier and he might not have been recovered enough from the car accident to go through their camps back then.

Colt had an awesome rookie preseason but his head coach never gave him a chance to play in the regular season, even when their season was over and they should have been building for the future. Colt got hurt and put on injured reserve when his team went through QB problems and would probably have given him a chance to play if he had been healthy in his second NFL season. Then the car accident. Then the bad timing of the NFL lockout ending.

Colt deserves a shot. Bad luck, injury issues, and that car accident have delayed things such that his age may prevent him from getting an NFL shot anytime soon. Colt’s best chance is to get fully healthy and try to get his shot in the CFL…he needs game film for scouts to watch and the CFL’s wide-open passing offenses are perfect for him.

  202. Garret August 10, 2011 1:44 pm

I think that ST mentioned that the new turf cost Aloha Stadium $2.5 mil. The Hawaiian Airlines sponsorship therefore exactly covers the cost of the turf. Is it possible that Hawaiian Airlines in just paying for the turf and no money is actually going to the Stadium Authority?

That actually would make the money from Hawaiian Airlines a true sponsorship of the new field…and would make some of the quotes from the Stadium Authority make a little more sense.

For those questioning how much of the turf money will go to UH, if the turf cost $2.5 mil and the sponsorship is for $2.5 mil…how much money is left over?

  203. Kevin August 10, 2011 1:45 pm

I feel badly for Ginlack, RGM, and Patek. I loved reading the article about how Jake Patek tried out and loved following Patek’s career at UH. His family was always nice to me on the blog, gave me some good advice, and were so much fun to talk with in person when I saw them at games on the mainland. I hope that Patek and the rest of the Warriors get a shot with the CFL or AFL next season.

Thanks Garret. I know a few payments are enroute.

  212. Garret August 10, 2011 1:51 pm

I hope that all of the starting receivers are healthy enough to practice soon, since UH will have so many new starters and they need to work on their chemistry with each other and with Moniz. UH is rebuilding at OL and WR and needs everyone to be healthy in both categories.

A few days of being held out may not be too bad because it helps give the backups extra reps and builds depth. However, too much time off would really hurt the offense…but even worse would be to rush people back and have those “tweaked” hamstrings become aggravated.

  213. A-House August 10, 2011 1:52 pm

    Pomai:

WOW, if Aloha Stadium authority collected that much, surely they can give UH 25% of the concession receipts and 25 % of the parking fees – that would be peanuts for them.

If so, how come they must go to the Legislature to beg for stadium repairs?

    Let’s see, $38.5 million x 10 years = $385,000,000 – yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!

  214. Garret August 10, 2011 1:54 pm

I’m trying really hard to point out that mainland colleges (even big-bucks BCS AQ schools) get their turf replaced for $700k to $1 mil while the Stadium Authority apparently spent 3x the normal cost for the new turf at Aloha Stadium. Maybe there would be money left over from Hawaiian Airlines to share with UH if it wasn’t all going to some contractor’s pockets.

  215. Garret August 10, 2011 1:54 pm

That should be “I’m trying really hard NOT to point out”.

  216. A-House August 10, 2011 1:55 pm

    Garret:

I believe the $2.5 million for turf repalcement came out from CIP funds from the legislature.

If so, the Hawaiian Air donation, over 10 years ( so I’m told ) will truly be a donation/marketing push by HAL.

My very responsible source said Stadium Authority mentioned 10% or less to UHAD of the $2.5 million.

  217. Garret August 10, 2011 1:56 pm

    A-House,

The maintenance on an old stadium like Aloha Stadium is VERY, VERY costly. The books are available for Aloha Stadium and I’ve seen figures for other older stadiums and the numbers are very, very high.

UH was able to examine the Aloha Stadium issue and declined opportunities to take over Aloha Stadium…it is NOT a money maker, and without the swap meet bringing in big bucks there would be *no* way to be able to afford to maintain that stadium for UH to play.

  218. Garret August 10, 2011 1:58 pm

    A-House,

If the stadium was such a money maker, do you honestly think that multiple UH ADs (not just HF) would conclude that UH would not benefit financially from taking over the stadium and getting 100% of the revenue?

  219. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 10, 2011 2:00 pm

Mahalo for the Colt update. Is he stilll going to try to find a team who’ll hire him or is he going to move on with his life?

$250 million would be an incredible Aloha Stadium upgrade investment; however, it ain’t gonna happen on Abercrombie’s watch – even if every penny came from the private sector.

Earlier this year, he erased all of the non-safety improvements planned over the next four years; nevertheless, the Administration anticipates haaving to defer any other decisions aabout Aloha Sdadium until such time as the mass transit system is ready to start because it’s a major Transit-Oriented Development site.

However, a lot things have happened nationally as well as locally over the past few months so that Aloha Stadium’s future is waiting for other things to happen first.

I have not heard what will happen to the site if the transit system somehow dies, but, based upon what I’ve observed over the past several months, most likely the Abercrombie Administration will move forward with a modified version of its housing development plans. As for what happens to the Stadium itself, that will require an organized group willing to spend time/mloney to keep it alive.

  220. Garret August 10, 2011 2:01 pm

BSU just fired their AD…looks like fallout from the NCAA violations.

Boise State president Bob Kustra said: “I did not come to this decision lightly. After a careful management review and discussions about the future of the program, I determined that new leadership will be needed as we commit ourselves to the highest level of attention and enforcement of NCAA standards, and also continue to move Boise State athletics to the next level of success.”

  222. Garret August 10, 2011 2:03 pm

With UH looking for a 2012 game, it is interesting to note that BSU just signed a home-and-home deal for 2012/2013 with an SEC school.

The Boise State football team has added a two-year series with Southern Miss to the schedule beginning next year, the schools announced Wednesday.

The Broncos will play in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Oct. 6, 2012. The Golden Eagles will play in Bronco Stadium on Sept. 28, 2013.

    http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2011/08/10/ccripe/boise_state_football_play_southern_miss_2012

  223. Garret August 10, 2011 2:04 pm

My mistake in reading too fast, that is a C-USA school, not an SEC school…I missed the “Southern” part.

  224. Garret August 10, 2011 2:06 pm

    WassupDoc,

Cancelling all of the upgrades to Aloha Stadium and pushing the decisions way into the future seems like a way to just save money now and potentially leave a huge problem later when the maintenance costs skyrocket and there is little to no time to get a new stadium while the current stadium starts falling apart. Oh well.

  225. Garret August 10, 2011 2:09 pm

In order to schedule Boise State, So Miss had to move its 2012 game vs. Louisville to 2013. So, Louisville apparently has an opening for 2012 now…that would be a good matchup for UH.

  231. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 10, 2011 2:18 pm

Don’t fairget that the Pro Bowl folks have picked up half the cost of the new turf. The balance is in the CIP Budget.

UH does NOT pay rent for its games which is a major reason why it does not get any revenues from parking fees and concession sales. It does not pay anything towards the maintenance of the facility either although it does supply locker room items such as soap, towels, hangers, etc.

For those of you who are interested in finding out Stadium revenues/expenses details, contact the Department of Accounting & General Services or Scott Chan, the Stadium Manager.

CONGRATS TO FORMER WARRIOR HEAD COACH MIKE WILTON!!!

Multiple winner of the AVCA Men’s Volleyball Coach of Year award will be inducted into a college’s athletics hall of fame for his work with women’s volleyball.

Mike Wilton, a former men’s volleyball coach at Hawai’i and women’s volleyball coach at Cal Poly, was selected to the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame, the school’s athletics department announced Tuesday.

Wilton in his 11 years at Cal Poly from 1978-89 guided the Mustangs to nine NCAA Tournament appearances. In addition, the coach reached the NCAA Regional Finals three times, and the Mustangs were ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll during the 1985 season.

Along with his success in women’s volleyball, Wilton had a successful coaching career on the men’s side when he left Cal Poly for Hawai’i in 1990.

Wilton compiled a 307-149 career record in his 17 seasons at Hawai’i. The coach also won the National Coach of the Year award in 1995 and 2002 — the only time a Hawai’i coach has received the award.

The Warriors under Wilton won five MPSF championships and reached the NCAA Final Four three times.

    Pomai & Others:

There is no recall provision in the Hawai`i State Constitution for the governor. Barring his resignation due to illness like Jack Burns did 40-plus years ago – or death – he will be with us until December, 2014. A lot can happen during that time.

Yes, it is possible that a governor could be forced to resign due to massive opposition to his policies, but I really don’t see that happening in Hawai`i anytime soon.

NOTE: Any elected official can be removed from office if convicted of a felony, but stupid decision-making is not a (real) crime.

For those discussing space-a to get to UH games, while it’s hard to get space-a hops to Nellis, getting to Travis for the Reno game is very do-able. Just have to remember the day before the game is Veteran’s Day and leave a day or two earlier. First hop to Travis from Hickam. Take a cab/van to the nearest train station (Suison) to catch a train to Oakland. Transfer to the Reno train and you’re there. Roundtrip around $150.

  257. Kevin August 10, 2011 4:35 pm

Well, non-cooperative liberals and conservatives can both FAINT altogther.

Businesses operate successfully based on financial responsibility, not ideals.

    It goes both ways.

REAL businesses don’t concern themselves with whether or not a homosexual male or female is employed with them. That has no bearing on how a company looks at income VS expense and in equal fashion it makes NO SENSE to fund “freebie” programs when you cannot find a real source of $$$$ to back it up.

I think people can point out where each political party fails in terms of focusing on the REAL problems vs one’s ideals in the examples I just mentioned.

    Today, where is the balance?????????????

When was the last time we saw common sense reign supreme over ideals and loyalty to special interest groups?

Where’s the one real person that will do the right thing based on common fiscal sense without it stemming from religious or idealistic goody-two shoe biases? The trend shows not in MY lifetime either and I’m half the age of most people here.

    Compromise. Where is it?

Wasn’t the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy today essentially based on compromise for the greater good?

Freedom of Speech = “well, I hate your face, but you have the legal right to say what you want” = COMPROMISE.

Politics kills and politics tear down the walls to the fortress that should be our financial and complete well-being as a nation.

With each passing year, voting seems more and more USELESS, BUT it gives me two hours off of work so what the hell right?

  258. Kevin August 10, 2011 4:42 pm

    CoolEthan,

But you gotta admit, that their “stand by their rules and if you don’t like it you can leave” stance works for them.

Australia has a ton of immigrants too from other countries and I think the diversity is either on par or surpasses ours, but those people adapted to learning english quickly because they had to. Call an Australian company’s help line and you are NOT going to find options to hear things in Japanese, Indian, or Chinese.

They won’t mess too much with creating multi-lingual forums or outlets of service. Either you speak the Queen’s English (for a lack of a better term), or you suffer. I kind of like that stance, very black and white and to the point. Same thing when us Americans travel to a foreign country, either you try to learn some of their language or else you’re screwed.

  259. Kevin August 10, 2011 4:44 pm

    America was like that.

Now it is becoming the country of appeasment to everyone possible so they can secure their vote.

    Your right about the congestion.

Conservatives want less of it at levels that are manageable for govt. duties required.

a.k.a. I don’t want a private business managing the DMV, but I don’t want the govt. selling me the car that requires registering through the DMV.

    It’s akward, but it works.

  262. CoolEthan August 10, 2011 4:48 pm

Was Kenny Esquivel assisting with the football team? I know his time was up and a new person from the Tennessee AD was supposed to be the next GA working in the weightroom.

I think it was said that the new person worked with the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball program.

Garret, Spreading out the Aloha Stadium renovation and repairs over 38 years was the plan Abercrombie inherited from the previous administration. Abercrombie decided that plan made no sense with Aloha Stadium projected to last just another twenty five years or so. Abercrombie was lead to believe the eighteen month budget deficit entering office was $270 million dollars. Turns out it was really $1.2 billion. Abecrombie had no choice but to make tough choices the previous administration refused to make and the Aloha Stadium renovations were halted.

  272. madeinhawaii August 10, 2011 5:35 pm

I must not have been paying attention.. but I just learned that last season,

the Warriors became the second team in all of FBS history to feature a 5,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher, and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season.

  273. madeinhawaii August 10, 2011 5:37 pm

  274. Old Diver August 10, 2011 5:41 pm

One more thing Garret, I believe the Stadium Authority mentioned that part of the money they will be receiving from Hawaiian Airline will be earmarked towards the next turf replacement.

    Garret:

am certainly not exploring the idea of UH taking over the stadium operations – they do not have the experience and expertise to do that

however, Pomai seems to have some ideas on how the mostly unused stadium can be put to use and be a money maker – I know the Michael Jackson concert was held there.

I know that the public schools get to use the stadium free for football games – anyone know if the OIA has to foot the bill for security, cleanup, etc?

There are individuals and organizations putting together a development plan for the entire Aloha Stadium site – not just the facility -that keeps the Stadium itself there including a new stadium to be built in about 25 years.

Economic activities include a high tech R&D park, an international sports venue both inside the Stadium as well as next to it, a hotel which will provide accommodations not just for visiting teams/fans but also for people who will be visiting family members or doing business at Hickam and Pearl Harbor, and multi-family workforce/affordable housing close to the transit center. There would be some limited commercial/retail development, but Salt Lake & Pearl Ridge are close by. There would be parking facilities in the buildings open to the public plus solar arrays on the rooftops as well as community gardens & other green spaces.

Unfortunately, state officials are not much interested in the concept even though there is a lot of interest in the private sector – including funding – because of the location and the huge chunk of mostly empty land right in the heart of O`ahu. Even without mass transit, it makes sense to generate revenues year-round as well as improve the area.

I’m anxious to see Harding on the field and see what he brings to the team. Maybe, he’ll have a shot early as a returner and maybe a little later he’ll get some playing time.

  310. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 10, 2011 10:08 pm

The only “place” in the area ariound UH-Manoa would be to tear down the 2-4 story walkup apartments between King Street and Kapi`olani Blvd – property is leasehold – and build the Stadium there. Not going to happen.

The only location seriously under consideration is on the new West O`ahu campus – if there is to be a new Stadium at all.

The Abercrombie Administration wants to develop the entire Aloha Stadium site – if the economy turns around on his watch – into affordable/workforce housing & businesses as an alternative to the proposed developments pending before the Land Use Commission in Central & West O`ahu. Not the only one, of course, but as a major alternative.

I personally don’t believe the QB’s will be like a “wow-lau-lau” Forcier type of notoriety. Not that important though.

Hawaii defense will have it’s hands full.

Colorado makes no secret that they plan to play smash ball football. And run the ball.

That’s why I only watch Mr. Keaukala, ( which is still generic, but more viable than the others) visit this beat site for the inside info, then follow up on wed. nights with leahey & leahey.

All 3 stations are copy/paste of each other , and @ the same broadcast time.

  360. CoolEthan August 11, 2011 6:11 am

The tight end situation seems to always be the sharp burr in the arse for Hawaii. Especially if there the Bear Pascoe type of TE.

But remember Zach Miller from ASU when they were here for the Aloha bowl. He was contained fairly well in that game by the D.

granted, the receiver situation is not going according to plan, but it is what is. we have depth at the positions and they know the system and will step-up. if any one still remembers the old rental car commercials of a retro era, “no one tries harder than #2″….

I’ve heard you can make money off of advertisers. Is it really a significant enough amount to make it worth it? Or does the real benefit in blogging come from the exposure you get? I’m a bellydancer and I dance at private parties and events. How could I use a blog to get more business? I’ve heard about people who have products to sell using blogs, but I don’t have a “product”, just me!.

Columbia University has a new creative writing major and on the application instructions, it says that anyone pursuing anything in the creative or visual arts may submit a supplement to their application. Creative writing is specifically listed, however, I am not sure what to submit. . . Would they accept a few writing samples in the mail after I electronically send my application or should I include the writing in an attatchment with my personal statement online?.

I really love the sciences, especially chemistry and physics. But I also love the creative aspect of the spectrum, such as writing and books. I really want to write. Would it be smart to minor in English or Creative Writing but major in the sciences? Does it look acceptable? I’m new to college stuff, and I’m curious. I don’t want to miss an opportunity to advance my scientific or creative knowledge! I’m a Junior in high school..

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

I have learned some important things as a result of your post. I’d also like to mention that there may be a situation in which you will obtain a loan and don’t need a cosigner such as a Fed Student Support Loan. However, if you are getting credit through a traditional financial institution then you need to be made ready to have a co-signer ready to assist you. The lenders will certainly base that decision on the few aspects but the most important will be your credit standing. There are some financial institutions that will likewise look at your work history and choose based on that but in many cases it will be based on on your rating.

Great post made here. One thing I would really like to say is that most professional areas consider the Bachelor’s Degree just as the entry level standard for an online college degree. While Associate Qualifications are a great way to get started on, completing your Bachelors reveals many entrances to various employment opportunities, there are numerous internet Bachelor Diploma Programs available via institutions like The University of Phoenix, Intercontinental University Online and Kaplan. Another thing is that many brick and mortar institutions make available Online variants of their college diplomas but normally for a drastically higher fee than the corporations that specialize in online course plans.

Thanks for the ideas you discuss through this web site. In addition, numerous young women who become pregnant do not even try and get medical insurance because they are concerned they couldn’t qualify. Although some states at this point require that insurers supply coverage in spite of the pre-existing conditions. Premiums on most of these guaranteed programs are usually higher, but when with the high cost of medical care bills it may be your safer strategy to use to protect a person’s financial future.

Thanks for your fascinating article. Other thing is that mesothelioma cancer is generally attributable to the inhalation of fibres from asbestos fiber, which is a carcinogenic material. It truly is commonly witnessed among workers in the construction industry that have long exposure to asbestos. It’s also caused by moving into asbestos covered buildings for years of time, Genes plays a huge role, and some people are more vulnerable towards the risk compared to others.

The other matter is that every time a problem develops with a personal computer motherboard, folks should not take the risk of repairing that themselves for if it is not done properly it can lead to permanent damage to the complete laptop. It’s usually safe just to approach your dealer of that laptop for your repair of its motherboard. They’ve already technicians that have an knowledge in dealing with notebook computer motherboard difficulties and can get the right analysis and undertake repairs.

One thing I’d really like to discuss is that weightloss program fast is possible by the right diet and exercise. A person’s size not only affects appearance, but also the overall quality of life. Self-esteem, melancholy, health risks, plus physical ability are damaged in extra weight. It is possible to make everything right but still gain. If this happens, a condition may be the offender. While a lot of food and never enough physical exercise are usually guilty, common medical conditions and key prescriptions can certainly greatly help to increase size. Many thanks for your post in this article.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
