Outside hitter Joshua Walker is in town practicing with the Hawaii-led team that will compete in next week’s Asian Pacific Cup in Fukuoka, Japan.

Here’s Walker on playing for a pro team in Abu Dhabi: Walker video.

In case you had any doubts, Dave Shoji said that outside hitter Falyn Fonoimanoa will not play for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team this year.

“Let’s put that to bed now,” Shoji said.

No surprise: John Speraw named UCLA’s head coach.

    Belated birthday wishes to Rich2176!

Happy Tuesday! Oh Happy Day, no troubles, and no skies of gray. Just getting hotter and hotter. Getting my strength and appetite back. Walking four and a half miles six days a week – 20 minute mile pace – with a day break in between. Doing my thing, and hitting the pavement at 6am just before the sun rises, and the temperature around the low 70s.

Love to the Tsaiko ohana! Barbara and I miss you all!

    Go Warriors!

Fonoimanoa had academic problems even in high school and barely made it into college. USC put in a lot of effort and resources into keeping her eligible all for not.I’m not really surprised by this revelation,I was actually expecting it.

  14. BigHiloFan2 June 5, 2012 5:14 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Happy Birthday Mr. Robinson. Hope tings are working out for you on the homefront.

Siaki Cravens. Hope all is getting better for you too!

I am looking forward to seeing Ginger Long on court. Plus Vorster was looking good in the Spring exhihibition against Nebraska. The addition of 6-4 Hagins in the middle will make it interesting. Perhaps Hartong may play outside.

  19. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 7:15 am

So, I’m wandering around campus yesterday afternoon, trying to take non-blurry photos, and I see Shoji. And the first thing he does is cover his face. Then we’re in the elevator together, and I figured, you know, I’m just going to ask the question: What’s up with FF?

And that’s when he said no, no, no. She will not play this year for UH.

And then I took his picture.

    And it was blurry.

  20. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 7:18 am

FF was at every spring football practice. I think I spoke to her only twice, and both times it was about her dog. So from those brief exchanges, she seemed really nice.

Anyway, not my beat. But I figured I might as well ask the question while I had the chance.

  33. Warrior Dave June 5, 2012 11:50 am

gigi — I thought you were looking at a eastern Med. cruise with your friends this year. Why not combine it with the India trip? No sense wasting all that air fare to that part world… 🙄

Hmmm…I also say that that about flying to SEA. SFO, LAX, SDO, MIA, YVR….. 👿

  35. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 12:22 pm

SteveM: the India trip is Nov 1-15. This is the longest foreign trip we have ever taken. In the recent past, we spent 3 nights in Tokyo and 5 nights in Hong Kong. Lol.

Don’t think we want to stay away from home longer than 15 days.

  36. A-House June 5, 2012 12:45 pm

If FF will not be eligible for 2012, when does her “time to play” run out? Did she play 1 or 2 years at USC and sit out 2011.

Is it the same as football? 5 years to play 4.

  37. A-House June 5, 2012 12:47 pm

I ate spam on Sunday, but all this spam today make me want to make spam and bell pepers for dinner tonight -= shoyu style!

  38. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 12:50 pm

I am not concerned, as my house is secured with an alarm and monitored, as well.

  39. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 12:54 pm

    Whoops. Sorry, Jimmy …

I didn’t know you were a real poster.

  40. wafan June 5, 2012 12:57 pm

  41. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 12:57 pm

    A-House:

Not sure when her actual clock expires, but it’s like George Jetson on the treadmill. The most important thing is accumulating credits toward a degree. The longer you’re out of high school, the more credits you need toward a major. If a person falls behind, it’s really difficult to catch up.

  42. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 12:59 pm

ST: I know what you mean. A Thai friend took longer than 10 years to get her BA and found she had to repeat classes because the time period had expired.

  43. jimmy the lock June 5, 2012 1:01 pm

    Rule #1 Never feel secured.

Home alarm lockbox’s can easily be found and opened. Then the phone and alarm power lines be cut or disabled. All done under 30 seconds.

    Rule #2 See rule #1.

  44. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:03 pm

It’s really great to get an athletic scholarship. My youngest sister had a schollie in Track and that helped put her through UH.

  45. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:04 pm

    Jimmy: Thanks for your concern.

Some people go thru great lengths to hide their vacations. One friend post dates her blog entries and only reveals she has been away when she returns.

  46. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 1:08 pm

My bad. Forgot to mention that it’s BG’s birthday.

  47. A-House June 5, 2012 1:22 pm

    Good neighbor!

u funny – George Jetson on the treadmill !!!

    BG – most Happy Birfday 2 U!!!

  48. A-House June 5, 2012 1:24 pm

Back in the day, I was told you had 10 years to get a degree at UH; if you went past, you had to start all over again!

Gigi – your friend lucky – only take a few classes!!

  49. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:30 pm

A-House: I give her credit. Imagine having to study for an exam or write a paper in a foreign language. I couldn’t do it. And English is a very difficult language to learn.

  50. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:32 pm

You have to admire the cops in this state. It’s very hard to be admitted to the police academy. My nephew failed the entrance exam by 13 points.

  51. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 1:34 pm

    A-House:

You’re right. They used to erase the credits that you took 10 or more years earlier.

But, of course, universities are businesses. That’s why few graduate in four years.

  52. wafan June 5, 2012 1:38 pm

    Happy happy birthday to BG!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  53. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:38 pm

ST: Did you know it is harder to get a PhD than it is to get an MD degree? You can get an MD degree in 3-4 years, whereas many PhD candidates take 7 years or so to finish their dissertation.

  54. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:39 pm

Kudos to Michael Tsai for hanging in there. Soon to be called Doctor Tsai.

  55. wafan June 5, 2012 1:40 pm

Thanks for the pix, Mr. Tsai.

  56. wafan June 5, 2012 1:41 pm

    GG . . .

A lot of times the problem is keeping your committee together long enough to get everything done per their specs. Change a member, usually means change the specs. Ugh.

  57. wafan June 5, 2012 1:42 pm

One of my friends struggled with her committee members who agreed to be there for the long term but changed schools for whatever reasons. Decided not to add that kind of stress to my life after watching her get really ill.

  58. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 1:44 pm

    Gigi:

Brother Mike just got promoted to lecturer, too.

  59. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:44 pm

Wafan: so much has to do with academic politics. If a prof doesn’t like you, he can be instrumental in getting you kicked out of the program.

  60. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 1:44 pm

    Oh, wait.

    Boing!

    I just caught on.

    jimmy the lock.

    That’s a great name.

  61. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:46 pm

Hubby was a part-time instructor at KCC (accounting) for more than 10 years. He got canned when the new chairman of the dept criticized him for teaching to the B students instead of to the C students.

  62. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:47 pm

ST: Lol. kinda slow, eh you???

  63. wafan June 5, 2012 1:48 pm

    GG . . .

That is true. The selection of a terminal degree program/school is so important! Sometimes gotta suck it up to get along with the committee members. Once you are granted that oversized piece of paper take it and run!!!

  64. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:51 pm

Anyway, to be a good teacher, you have to enjoy using your voice. Talk talk talk all day long!

Chris Bosh to play. Let’s Go Heat!!!

  66. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 1:57 pm

  67. jm2375 June 5, 2012 2:10 pm

    Happy Birthday BG!!

  68. jimmy the lock June 5, 2012 2:14 pm

Homes with jealousies are inviting. Plants and bushes that block street view are ideal. No dogs, no problem.

  69. HawaiiMongoose June 5, 2012 2:20 pm

    Best form of home alarm:

Dog in yard. Dog in next-door-neighbor’s yard. Dog in other-side-next-door-neighbor’s yard. Dog in across-the-street-neighbor’s yard. Dog in neighbor-next-door-to-across-the-street-neighbor’s yard.

All dogs bark like crazy when a stranger walks into the neighborhood.

It used to bother me but now I find it comforting.

  70. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 2:24 pm

Well, how often do you call the cops when dogs start barking??? Bet you never do.

  71. haka June 5, 2012 2:29 pm

Here’s a link to a live feed from Mauna Loa for the viewing of the transit of Venus if anyone is interested. Cool……I mean HOT!

The website takes a while to connect so you have to be patient, but it’s worth the wait.

    http://www.exploratorium.edu/venus/

  72. HawaiiMongoose June 5, 2012 2:30 pm

No need to call the cops because whoever triggered the barking picks up their pace and vacates the area within 30 seconds. Otherwise the barking doesn’t stop.

  73. jimmy the lock June 5, 2012 2:31 pm

Barking dogs are a deterrent. No reason to call the police.

Homeowners tend to peek out their windows whenever their dog or dogs have a certain bark.

  74. jimmy the lock June 5, 2012 2:33 pm

Celtics have lost their last 6 road games. Will the streak continue?

  75. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 2:35 pm

Depends on the dog. My apt in New York was burglarized despite my dog’s bark. Maybe Lani was just too sweet… Lol.

  76. jimmy the lock June 5, 2012 2:45 pm

Burglars could care less from an apartment dwelling arf arf designer dog. It’s the outdoor drool spraying fangs glaring WOOF! WOOF! snarling dog that one has second thoughts about.

  77. Last Call June 5, 2012 2:47 pm

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BG !!!

  81. BG June 5, 2012 3:23 pm

Cruised lazily onto the blog and was pleasantly surprised…thanks for the BD wishes! Best present of the day was the news from Midnight that things are progressing well! Can’t find two nicer people than Midnight and Barbara.

Betty cooked up a big, juicy 16 oz steak for lunch and followed up with a birthday cake. She tires easily, but was determined to do something special for me. She’s my sunshine…

  82. A-joe June 5, 2012 3:34 pm

I used to have my shirt designs printed with a local Vietnamese company. One day while waiting for my order to be packed I struck up a conversation with the owner outside his warehouse. Out of the blue the owner asks me,

    “How much munay Teacher make?”

I tell him, “I think about $32,000 starting? More if one has a masters?”

He tells me, “Dat good munay, yeah?”

With his arms crossed just below his chest and a burning cigarette between his fingers he flicks the excess ashes as he stares off into the distance. Then he asks, “How much munay Doctor make?”

I tell him, “Hmmm… I’m not sure. $120,000? Maybe more or less?”

He tells me, “WOW! Dat lot of munay!”

He pauses for a moment, takes a long drag from his cigarette, then with a smile tells me,

“I make 3 time dat much. I work only 8 hour. 5 day a week. I pay good all my workers. I go home enjoy my family. No stress. No worry someone die from my t-shirt print. It too hard be teacher or doctor. Not wurt stress.”

Everyone’s pursuits and outlook on life is all relative.

Goofy seniors showed up at the prom drunk. Suspended for 5 days. They have 6 days left. Sucks to be them having to complete all of their final assignments in one school day. I know three of them will be back in my classes next semester.

Definitely not the brightest C7 bulbs.

  101. wafan June 5, 2012 4:44 pm

    Nytal.

  102. Kevin June 5, 2012 4:47 pm

    wafan,

It’s common knowledge that you’re supposed to get drunk a-f-t-e-r the prom.

  103. wafan June 5, 2012 4:54 pm

A lot of them were going to be busy after the prom — might have been trying to get an early start. Seriously, lots of girls were telling the guys to bring protection. At least they were thinking ahead (pun not intended).

    Really sad.

  104. wafan June 5, 2012 4:55 pm

    Okay, nytal. Really.

  106. 3-Prong June 5, 2012 5:05 pm

Too bad about FF. Must be a schholwork issue. The Rainbow Fans can wait another year. Even the coach specifically said “she will not play this year for UH”. To me this implies the possibility in the future.

Birthday wishes to our Retired US Army Sergeant Major *BG* will conclude at Midnite tonight.

But in the infamous words of my friend’s dad who would say to those he caught red handed stealing his mangoes and oranges,

“AAAAaaaaaahhh!… Go go go… take take take take… Bumby you pay the price.”

  110. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2012 6:21 pm

ah, well, nothing matters to me right now except that the Heat LOST today’s game, and the Celtics have a 3-2 lead in the series.

This was not supposed to happen.

I solved my video problems. It was blurry because I messaged myself, then posted. Tomorrow’s videos are going directly from the phone to the laptop.

  127. Garret June 5, 2012 7:56 pm

I didn’t see this posted–the Big East is interested in taking some of the MWC’s bowl games.

The Big East Conference has expressed interest in several western bowl games for 2014 and beyond, including possible bowls in San Diego, Las Vegas and Hawaii, according to a league document obtained by U-T San Diego.

The document says the league’s western football expansion in 2013 “will expand interest in bowl games for the league. “

  128. Garret June 5, 2012 7:58 pm

Ticket prices will get really high if they want a decent Pac-12 school in the Holiday Bowl.

In order to attract some of the better teams from the better conferences, the Holiday Bowl will have to increase ticket prices from $60 to $100, something the game’s board of directors didn’t do in 2009, which forced them to lose the upper echelon of teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12.

Wyoming’s AD says that the MWC needs to get a better TV deal or else.

“First and foremost, we have to improve our television deal,” UW athletics director Tom Burman said Monday as he was leaving San Diego.

“Otherwise, it’s going to slowly starve all of us. You look at the growth of television contracts around the country and where we are today, we have to figure that solution out.”

Burman pointed out that the MW is in the middle of a long-term deal now, and there may – or may not – be chances to renegotiate or to get out of it.

“There’s no news that we can report,” he added. “It’s ongoing and will continue to be ongoing. I expect this to last longer than shorter.”

  130. sports for fun June 5, 2012 8:24 pm

Read this in the Star-Advertiser just now…

“The NFL made a seven-year proposal that offered increases of between 5 percent and 11 percent in wages per year. First-year officials who made an average of $78,000 in 2011 would earn more than $165,000 by the end of the new agreement. A 10-year veteran in 2011 who made $139,000 would get more than $200,000 in 2018.”

Dang! I’m officiating the wrong sport!!

  131. sports for fun June 5, 2012 8:26 pm

Um, Wyoming AD…gotta improve the product on the field first. Then the TV contract will improve.

  132. sports for fun June 5, 2012 8:28 pm

A Big East bowl game…in Hawai’i? Seriously? The Big East should call itself the North America Conference instead.

  133. Slugger June 5, 2012 8:35 pm

    Happy birthday, BG!!!!

  134. Slugger June 5, 2012 8:42 pm

Hi, tommui! Sorry I missed an opportunity for a hug. I wanted to see some of the transit & then hele on back to work. Hope you got to see some of the views through telescopes.

  135. A-joe June 5, 2012 8:50 pm

    129- Great article, Garret.

Burman reminds me of that old joke where the horse manure says to the Cow pie and dog crap, “Man, something stinks in here and it aint me! We need to do something about it!”

    =)

  136. btn225 June 5, 2012 8:51 pm

Always thought the Big East should change their name to the Big Weather Vane

  137. jm2375 June 5, 2012 9:02 pm

Can’t we just rename the conferences A, B, C, D, E, … There aren’t more than 26 conferences are there? Big East goes to the West Coast (supposedly), the Big 10 has 12 teams, the Big 12 has 10 teams, the WAC has teams in Texas, … 🙄

  138. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 9:18 pm

    Sports For Fun:

I think we’re at the point where NFL officials should be full-time employees.

It’s just not right that the guy who is selling insurance on Friday is calling holding penalties on Sunday.

  139. al June 5, 2012 10:14 pm

jm1411…and in reality Texas used to be the wild, wild, west but seriously, the wac has been whacked and shall be no more.

then, we’ll move our olympic sports to the big west which really has no big schools.

  140. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 10:52 pm

If anybody is interested, the Hawaii-led men’s volleyball team will practice from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow. The football players will be working out in two shifts — from 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

  141. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 10:54 pm

I know the natural thing is to have the Big West stick it to Boise. But if I were UH, I would try to make nice-nice to Boise. As a football-only member in the MWC, UH needs ot make as many friends as possible.

  142. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2012 10:55 pm

While people note that San Diego State really shouldn’t be in the Big East, the Aztecs’ campus is actually the relatively same distance to the East Coast as Hawaii is from the West Coast.

  143. jm2375 June 5, 2012 11:07 pm

wait, why should UH make nice-nice to B$U if they’re leaving?
