Debt perception
Think UH’s money woes will go away anytime soon? Think again.
To cover deficits, the athletic department draws money from a fund that, in essence, is like a credit union. Several entities, such as RainBowTique, deposit their excess cash into the fund. The fund has covered the athletic department’s’ accumulated deficit of about $10 million. The department pays about $60,000 a year in interest.
Last month, a report suggested that the school should just forgive the loan that would be extremely difficult to pay back. Indeed, that would surely help the athletic department climb out of a hole that was created by travel costs, salaries and benefits, and the obligation to fund sports that operate at losses.
But it’s not that simple. The money borrowed doesn’t come from UH, it comes from programs that contribute to that fund. If you belong to a credit union, how would you feel if your co-workers’ loans were forgiven while you still had to pay back yours?
There are other possible ways to ease the situation. For instance, because UH is at risk of losing federate funding if it does not comply with gender-equity progression, maybe the school should subsidize some of the women’s sports programs.
Or maybe the athletic department could get a bigger cut of H merchandise?

Offensive tackle Austin Hansen still is appealing his NCAA suspension. If his appeal were denied, he would be eligible to return in the second half of the football season. For now, the Warriors are prepared to enter training camp with Clayton Laurel and Jordan Loeffler at that position. Laurel, who will be a senior, played well during the spring. Loeffler, who will be a second-year freshman, progressed after missing three spring practices because of leg issues. Laurel and Loeffler had entered the UH program as grayshirts.

The WAC has decided to reduce this year’s Football Media Preview, which used to cover at least two days, into a single Media Day.
The event will be held July 28, in Las Vegas’ Orleans Hotel, with each of the eight head football coaches getting a 30-minute turn at the mic. Quarterback Bryant Moniz is expected to represent the Warriors.

The only way that UH can subsidize athletics is by using tuition. Imagine what they students will say if they have to pay an athletic fee and tuition money is used too.
@PapaJoe…there are lots of rentals on Manhattan Avenue. Yes, Hermosa Beach and the beach cities is the ONLY place to live in LA. Fresh air all the time. NO SMOG!!!!! But if you come to town, let Cliff know and he will call me and we can meet at the Mermaid. I would be happy to take you on the City tour of all of the sports athletes homes and the many pro and college football coaches who have flocked to live in Hermosa Beach. For some reason it has become the “IN” place for athletes and Coaches as well as celebs. Heck when Calen is in town, he hangs out with my neighbor…WEE MAN, the star of the Jack Ass movies. He will be coming to see Calen at a game this year. The little boy who lives next door to us, Kai (4 years old) misses Calen as Calen was his big brother in the neighborhood. His Dad is also from Hawaii and little Kai and his Dad are going to a game this year too!!!
I am enjoying my day…being treated like a Goddess, with gifts and phone calls from my own children and all the children we have helped raise and helped them make their lives better. But for us Mothers Day is very special as how many folks can say, they have a Mother in Law who is 100 years young? Every day with her is a blessing. And we cherish her…heck when Calen called, he had to speak to Granny first!!!!
The only way this bill at is going to get paid off at UH is if we win the LOTTERY!!!! So, next time I am feeling lucky, we need folks to give me some numbers…who knows what could happen??????

Going back to Al’s post last night about Kauai HS stealing bases after a big lead…
I dunno, I didnt see the game, but it’s not the worst thing in the world.
As for injuries occuring to opposing teams and the other taking advantage, well quite honestly speaking it’s the game officials’ duty to call for a stoppage in play.
As they say in football, “play to the whistle” right?
Who here can honestly say that if an opposing football player went down with a cramp or even a torn ACL and the refs dont blow the whistle in time and UH just completed a bomb for a TD, you’d be “disappointed” that we kept running into the endzone?
I say keep playing until the officials STOP the game.
But back to Al’s comment. Honestly the pressure to win, even at the high school level is probably at unseen heights. Is Kauai High School’s M.O focused on speed on the bases and keeping the pressure on that way? I dunno. If it is, then they are just playing their game right? Not their fault the other team can’t stop them right?
No one seemed to have a problem with this philosophy that a former UH coach made famous right?

Shaq, good luck in your decision although I am hoping you choose to become a Warrior. I can see you becoming a 4yr. starter for us as well as being the most important piece to starting a Fab 4 for the next 4yrs. with yoursef, Gerry Blakes, Dillon Biggs, and Ronnie Stevens. You could be an instant impact guy and I know with your skills combined with those three guys I just mentioned, you could create something special for our Warrior Basketball team. Talk Story:
The Story Corps program writen about in today’s paper is a cool program. I heard the excerpts on NPR about people’s lives and experiences when I lived in AZ. So, when the Story Corps trailer came to Flagstaff, I signed up. My co-advisor of the Hawaiian club and I “interviewed” each other – we just talked story about growing up in Hawaii and living on the mainland away from home. Our interview is in the Library of Congress and we each got a copy of the interview on CD.
I like to think that I had a hand in getting them to Hawaii, since they had no plans in 2006 of coming here. I sent in a written suggestion and spoke to someone in the program. Because of the diversity and cultures in Hawaii, there are totally different stories here than on the mainland. So, try go… interviews in Pidgin would be cool to have in the Library of Congress and broadcast on NPR.

That has always bothered me, but it is just the way that UH does the accounting. I guess the theory is that all merchandise sales go into the same pot and lots of the sales are for non-sports-themed stuff.
I used to be a lot more upset about it…until I saw the figures released on USA Today which showed that Upper Campus provided more than $10 mil of the UH Athletic Department’s budget. The Athletic Department may lose $100k or $500k on merchandise licensing…but Upper Campus is covering WAY more than that for UH Athletics.
When Upper Campus talks about a deficit, they are talking about giving UH Athletics more than they had already planned. The last year I saw was I think 2008-2009, and they gave UH Athletics a little more than $10 mil and the deficit was counted as $2 mil…so, Upper Campus already expected to lose $8 mil on Athletics.
What happens when the UH budget gets hammered by the Legislature due to the economy? We all know that is coming. If Upper Campus ever asked for that $10 mil to go to $0, UH would have to eliminate sports altogether. The student fee may provide $2 mil, but that does not fix the budget.
Expect a tuition increase coming soon for UH. I don’t see any way around that. I also expect the student fee to go up–or some of that tuition increase will go to the Athletic Department’s subsidy by UH.
Bottom line, we cannot complain about the licensing money when UH Athletics takes so much money out of Upper Campus’ budget.

I said the same thing after the Sugar Bowl. Why would JJ dump UH before the biggest game in UH history? 🙁
I looked up the latest year’s numbers since I last year I had seen was 2008-2009. For 2009-2010, this is what Upper Campus spent on Athletics:
Direct Institutional Support (money given to UHAD): $5,743,229.00
Facilities and Administrative Support: $4,800,118.00
Together, that comes to about $10.5 mil.
Program sales, concessions, parking, and novelty sales: $572,884.00
Add up all of the money that UH got from TV, radio, internet rights, and everything UH gets from the WAC (including NCAA basketball money and bowl money)…it comes out to less than half of what Upper Campus gave to UH Athletics.

@Kekoa, not sure if I can attend the Vegas game, as I was just sent a script for a movie over that period to be shot in Michigan. If the Director lets us leave…many times we are not allowed to leave the state on weekends I would attend the game. It depends on the Director and the UPM. But yes, if not working we will be there. But I have every kind of way to see games, computer, ESPN pay per view. Cost big money over football season as I have all my different teams to follow!
@PapaJoe2, I saw a rental sign on a house that I know is three bedrooms just the other day on the 1400 block of Manhattan Ave. Will keep my eyes open. No, was not me as I have been out of town so much this year working. Tell your daughter to look around on the North end of Hermosa as lots of the seniors are having to rent their homes as they can not go up and down the stairs…you know most of those homes are 4 stories so it is really a community of young athletic folks. But will keep my eyes open and let you know if I see any good priced rentals. Right now I am in Redondo Beach as we are doing a total reno on our home there. Since it is going to be on a major television show, we have to work at their pace…so taking a long time to complete. Can not wait to be right next to the water again. Where does your daughter work?

Garret, I’m going to take the position that of the $360,000,000 we taxpayers gave UH this year to operate we taxpayers meant some of it to go to the Athletic Department. That being the case the amount of the Athletic Department’s deficit is determined by Upper Campus. I’m interested to see you take on this.

The UH wanted more autonomy over the money they received from the legislature and so they got it.
Whether you support additional money “earmarked” for athletics or whether you support more money for UH in general, it will not happen.
The only way athletics gets more money is to ask upper campus. They do not ask the legislature. It does not work that way.
#73 money for Uh from the general fund is a given, if you pay taxes. To sports/arts is optional.
And I don’t know why the legislature, didn’t allow for the posilibility of voters to authorize additional deductions from their (taxpayers) net tax bill, to be allocated to their choice, wether it be education, econ development etc.
Rather than ask us to pay our fair share, ask us if were willing to give more to a dedicated cause.

I was watching the begining of the Laker game and saw the end on ESPN highlights. But what Odom and Bynum did at the end is inexcusable. There is no Sportsmanship in those plays and Its a horrible example for kids.

This blog seems to get a renowned deal of visitors. How do you advertise it? It gives a nice individual twist on things. I guess having something real or substantial to talk about is the most important factor.
I know a lot of us here can vouch for what happens in youth sports in Hawaii, but just a SERIOUS question.
What is the attitude like on the mainland where straight up WINNING is more pushed on youth sports?
With that being said, I bet there are more than enough parents at home pointing to the actions of some LA Lakers after that loss and saying, “See son, they should feel that way because they are losers. That’s what happens when you lose! Don’t LOSE!!!”…

The NCAA softball tournament selection will be next weekend, there are 30 automatic conference champion qualifiers and 34 at large bids. The field will be played at 16 regional sites featuring a four team double elimination format. Winner of each site advances to a super regional site, eight sites of two teams playing best of three format. Eight teams divided two two brackets will be playing a double elimination format.
Initial seeding in the field of 64 really helps a team in terms of travel and home field advantage. Last season Washington played the regional and super regional at home, so did Alabama. Texas would have been another except BYU won the regional.
#94 the 8 teams in two brackets is the women college world series in Oklahoma City.

Over the past three years, I have asked Rep. Mark Takai, a member of the House Higher Education Committee and dedicated Tsai-ko, along with Sen.
