Deboarding

Rick Blangiardi is one of a few who can own a room.

He’s smart, creative, LOUD, and brutally honest. He took a channel whose only sportscasts were day-old replays of sumo matches and turned it into the Home Team. He took a drab concept — a coach’s show — spliced and spiced it with MTV-style editing and turned it into a watchable (and somewhat profitable) program.

And he boosted the Warriors’ booster club.

For years, Na Koa was a boutique club led by Ben Yee, a hard-working and honorable guy. Yee, who wasn’t paid a cent, shoots as straight as his flat-top haircut. But with the football team’s needs swallowed in difficult economic times, Yee and Blangiardi teamed to take the club to the proverbial next level. The result is an organization with two full-time paid workers, a board that is a blend of football alumni and community members, and fund-raisers that pay for summer school, training tables, equipment, and, yes, fertilizer, among other wish-list items.

Blangiardi yesterday said he is confident about the “future of UH football.” Blangiardi said Na Koa is under the UH Foundation and in “complete compliance” with NCAA rules.

His goals accomplished, Blangiardi has resigned from Na Koa’s board, although he will continue to be a member and UH season-ticket buyer.

Erin Andrews left ESPN to serve as host of Fox’s pregame football show. Her first assignment? According to deadspin.com, it will be the Sept. 1 UH-USC pregame.

Happy birthday to Al, who will forever hold a place in The Sting and Point After of our youth.

Blangiardi: What a well known name in Hawaii. Mahalo for all you have done for Warrior football.

One of our readers was watching the Food Channel, decided he could whip up a better meal, then sent me pictures of his creation.

Why, oh, why, do readers torture me like that?

I mean, pictures but not samples?

Every time I see, wowlaulau, I keep singing: “Lucille, you gonna leave me now? Mango season not pau …”

  11. SteveM July 2, 2012 12:26 am

Thank you and good luck to Rick Blangiardi in his retirement.

I still remember selling him a file cabinet in the mid-70’s, when I worked at Winter’s Office Furniture on Nimitz. He had great presence, drive and enthusiasm for UH football even back then.

Good night. Bleary-eyed from watching “24” episodes between periods of real life today. Kinda addicting show. 🙂

  12. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 12:30 am

Rick’s not retiring from Hawaii News Now.

    He’s retiring from Na Koa.

  13. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 12:31 am

    SteveM

I remember an Entertainment Weekly reporter once watched 24 episodes of “24” non-stop.

    Mahalo to Mr Blangiardi!

  15. al July 2, 2012 12:59 am

rick “big guy” blangiardi…mahalo for the efforts.

and he is one good guy. truly he lives hawaii.

  16. al July 2, 2012 1:03 am

iwwthm…got to speaking with garret. his employment also included maguroya, the brother of the yohei proprietor and he further crafted his art at another one of my favorite sushi houses, tokkuri tei in the days when it was on sheridan street.

    we’ll be back.

  17. al July 2, 2012 1:06 am

so rick was the first that i called “big guy” with robert being second.

…and then there’s pride. another big guy, but, i just call him “brother”.

  18. mo808 July 2, 2012 1:06 am

Gigi, glad you enjoyed a wonderful evening! I remembered cause you mentioned champaign (which i like better than beer) and me and hubs will also celebrate 32 next month! Yeah, I never cared for the Turtles back then but I heard this song this the other day on one of oldie channels and the lyrics and toon were catchie…and appropriate! Now, if only I could shoot the dog next door I could get back to sleep! He stopped barking must be a mind reader! Goodnight folks!

  19. al July 2, 2012 1:32 am

    mo808…truly a tsaiko.

she’s awaken from her deep sleep by the neighbor’s dog and what does she do???

    reach for her husband…nope.

reaches for the “warrior beat” connection.

    unreal girl.

  20. PowderPuff July 2, 2012 5:30 am

Whoa! Spamalicious this morning. Good morning, Tsaikos! Thank you for everything, Rick! He also donated prime-time air time for last year’s Warrior Bowl and the recent “Evening with Coach Chow.” Both were successful fundraisers for Na Koa too. Congratulations again to Kyla Ross’ family, the Tanos and the Rosses.

  21. Slugger July 2, 2012 5:44 am

    Good morning, gang!

Mahalos to Rick Blangiardi! Good man.

    Congrats to Kyla Ross!

  22. d1shima July 2, 2012 5:45 am

    Great Morning All!

    Mahalo and Aloha Rick Blangiardi!

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo….

  23. Dan-O July 2, 2012 6:17 am

For old times sake, I wanna “hear” Papa Jim and Rick in the booth calling a UH football game.

I’m not superstitious, but our greatest victories and seasons were called with Leahey in the booth.

  24. Last Call July 2, 2012 6:18 am

What’s with the hoopla about Kyla Ross ? Kyla was born in Honolulu and her daddy played ball at UH, end of story.

When you browse the internet Kyla is a Cali girl with not much mention of Hawai`i beyond born in Honolulu, not even Wikipedia mentions Hawai`i

Sometimes I’m amused when states and cities start claiming ownership of Olympic athletes.

I remember back when Lance Armstrong was the hot news. Places like Reno,Sacramento and Minnesota all claimed ownership.

  25. 3-Prong July 2, 2012 6:35 am

    Hey Last Call,

    It’s Last Call. Hehe.

  26. MANOA July 2, 2012 6:38 am

Last Call, it is a natural thing that all readers do and hence all local media do. If you look at all the news about people– for example, all the candidates for the Olympic gymnastics team, all a blur of names, but your interest will be drawn to someone who has some connection to you. In this case not so much the gymnast, but her parents– one from Hawaii and one who played football and baseball for Hawaii and met in Hawaii. Call it human nature.

  27. LizKauai (iPad) July 2, 2012 6:39 am

    Mahalo, Uncle Rick”

    Have a great day, erryone!

  28. haka July 2, 2012 6:49 am

    #30 lc

what’s with the ownership hoopla? it’s the beginning of the story, not the end. if wishing someone goodwill, with ties or not is something you don’t enjoy then that is your own claim to shame. amused, but the end of your story.

  29. tommui July 2, 2012 6:50 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I remember when I first met Rick Blangardi. He was one of the premiere players for the Rainbows with a then-thicker Bostonian (Irish/Italian) brogue than the clam chowder at Durgin Park! Then a coach under Larry Price and later stints in broadcasting in New York and the West Coast. Still has traces of Bostonian accent. A really lovable guy and Hawaii is fortunate to have him make this his permanent home!

And what would I do with a fake passport from Tajikistan?

And did you see Kyla doing her stuff on Channel 8 last night – great job!

  30. mo808 July 2, 2012 6:51 am

    Good Morning!

Al, I’ve often wondered what encompasses the term ‘Tsaiko’ 🙂

    Have a great Monday folks!

  31. PowderPuff July 2, 2012 6:58 am

Last Call, maybe if you knew the Tanos, your opinion would be different. A 15-year-old girl has made the Olympic team…in one of the Games’ marquee sports. And her mom went to school here with many, many people who remember Kiana, Dustin and the Tanos. Pretty newsworthy, even if it’s on a Sunday in July.

    In other news….Tiger is back!

  32. Last Call July 2, 2012 7:00 am

Even Booby agrees with me . 🙂

If anybody wants to join Little Learners in the Kailua Fourth of July Parade, let me know. We’re sixth in the lineup.

  34. Old School Dave July 2, 2012 7:02 am

I remember hearing a story told by Rick Blangiardi when he was an assistant under Larry Price. Back then, they didn’t have any recruiting budget, but managed to raise enough money for tickets to LA. With no money to rent a car, they went up to Wahiawa the night before they left, and stole some pineapples (a couple boxes) which they used to pay for their car rentals in LA for a couple of days. Adapt, improvise, overcome.

  35. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 7:04 am

    Go Kyla!!!

  36. PowderPuff July 2, 2012 7:04 am

Wow, good for you…do you feel better? I hope you do.

  37. PowderPuff July 2, 2012 7:05 am

    Wait, who’s Booby?

  38. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 7:06 am

Blangiardi and Leahey used to have some epic arguments.

Blangiardi would fire Leahey, and then they would be back working together the next day.

Yesterday, Blangiardi said he wanted to yell at Leahey. Then he said he missed him and wanted to take him to lunch.

  39. Stretch July 2, 2012 7:06 am

    Happy Birthday to Al!

  40. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 7:07 am

  41. Last Call July 2, 2012 7:08 am

    Booby is BC.

  42. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 7:09 am

If I were a prosecutor, I wouldn’t call BC as my first witness in this argument.

  43. mo808 July 2, 2012 7:10 am

ST really? I was planning to go watch from sidelines. Details?

  44. Stretch July 2, 2012 7:10 am

I thought you meant Bobby Boucher….

  45. Old School Dave July 2, 2012 7:10 am

I recall it was when KHNL showed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre one night back in the 80’s. For some reason, Jim Leahy would introduce movies and that night he said something like, “this movie has absolutely no redeeming factors.” To which, Blangiardi fired Leahy on the spot. Too funny.

  46. mo808 July 2, 2012 7:12 am

Larry Ellison should write a big check to the UH sailing team.

  52. INNOCENT OBSERVER July 2, 2012 7:20 am

Is there more to Blangiadi’s resignation, related to the charitable organization issue? the timing makes it suspicious.

  53. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 7:22 am

Sad I won’t be able to watch UH demolish BYU, because I’ll be in India. Good luck to the Warriors!

  54. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 7:22 am

    Ellison should.

I’ve heard the sailing and golf teams do well through donations. Not sure how well, since I never hear anything about either sport from UH. But I once made mention, and a UH person (not affiliated with either sport) went on and on about sailing and golf.

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid July 2, 2012 9:14 am

    d1 –

Regardless of where she’s from, Kyla gots Hawaii roots. And it was cool seein’ that hapa-poly-asian face amongst the other competitors!

  73. d1shima July 2, 2012 9:16 am

    DPK,

    Eh, you really Sumboddy, ah?

    😆

  74. Shoko July 2, 2012 9:26 am

“The cramped room inside H.P. Pavilion turned into a sobbing, mascara-running free-for-all moments after the U.S. women’s gymnastics team was announced Sunday night. World champion Jordyn Wieber wept. So did Olympic trials winner Gabby Douglas. Ditto McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman.

Not Kyla Ross. No, the youngest member of the five-person team the U.S. will send to London in three weeks smiled. She hugged. She shook with excitement. Her cheeks, however, remained tear-free.”

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=oly&id=8123182

I like that (no)reaction. It’s like she always knew and there was no question she would make the team. No emotion and no expression. She would make a good poker player. 😉

Anyway, I’m not one to follow the sport, but when I was watching the trials one day, I noticed this Asian-looking girl and thought to myself: She looks local.

    Little did I know…

  75. turfwar July 2, 2012 9:32 am

Kyla’s parents and family are long time Kailua residents and that’s more than enough reason to consider her a “local” and to identify her as a “Hawaii Connection” to the Olympics. If it means little to others then so be it. But she certainly made watching the gymnastic finals a lot more exciting. And like DPK mentioned her facial features are absolutely local.

  76. hawnstln July 2, 2012 9:34 am

    Connections are open to interpretation.

Like today, in the World Cup of Softball Team USA will play Australia again, this time for the World Title.

Game is at 3pm HST on ESPN2.

Team USA… 0 – UH connections and if I wanna dig deep, and really deep, the only UH related connection plays for Oklahoma.

Aussie Spirit – 4 UH connections w/one current player. Those four represented UH.

    GO AUSTRALIA!!!

  79. Last Call July 2, 2012 9:40 am

If you asked Kyla where she is from would she say Hawai`i ? Of course not.

  80. SteveM July 2, 2012 9:40 am

What timing… hawnstln’s posted as I was writing mine. 🙂

  81. clyde July 2, 2012 9:42 am

Yes, we’ll be cheering for Kyla and the U.S. team in the Olympics. Having a local connection always makes it more interesting. I believe Ken Tano, a former Roosevelt High basketball star and police officer, is Kyla’s grandfather. As for Kyla’s ethnicity, and Stephen can correct me, but wasn’t Jason Ross half-Black and half-Okinawan? I think he was recruited out of Georgia.

  82. Loa July 2, 2012 9:55 am

    Happy birthday Al !

  83. WarriorNY July 2, 2012 10:00 am

    SteveM,

I was just watching 24 again these past few weeks. I finally finished on Sunday and am now jones-ing to fill the void… When that final countdown went off, I was like Dammit, now what!

What season are you on? The first 5 seasons were pretty incredible. Are you watching on Netflix cuz all of the seasons are available for dirt cheap. I’m trying to figure out another show to watch on there on Netflix to get my action fix.

    “Stephen Tsai:

  86. SteveM July 2, 2012 10:09 am

WarriorNY — I am watching season 7 of “24” again, which I thought was one of the best. I had 3 other seasons. Costco (Iwilei) here is selling all the seasons for $9.99 each. So I just filled up my collection… 🙂

  87. Ipu Man July 2, 2012 10:11 am

Happy Birthday to Al. How old are you?

You are such a Tsaiko Pal…because you are you.

Happy Birthday to Al. Hope you eat a delicious pupu.

  88. WarriorNY July 2, 2012 10:18 am

$9.99? wow that’s a great deal! I remember buying those first two seasons for like $50 back in the day!

  89. Shoko July 2, 2012 10:19 am

“If you asked Kyla where she is from would she say Hawai`i ? Of course not.”

I would think it might depend on who is asking. If a white, black or hispanic person asked me where I was from, I would tell him California. If it was a person who looks like he from Hawaii then I would say bread and buttered on the islands, braddah. If he asked me in pidgeon, the answer would be even simpler.

  90. d1shima July 2, 2012 10:21 am

No one in Hawaii asks, “Where are you from?”

“wat skoo you grad?” tells local people all they need to know! 😆

  91. Ipu Man July 2, 2012 10:22 am

I agree with Dan-O: “I wanna “hear” Papa Jim and Rick in the booth calling a UH football game.” Wouldn’t that be awesome?!

  92. SteveM July 2, 2012 10:22 am

I am still searching for someone to give me one correct guess as to the well known Tsai-ko gas griller that came to my mind. HiFlyer was on the right track and Koakane named almost everyone. If I had to name a winner this second, it would be one of these two.

So I will declare a winner by midnight, unless someone can swoop in with (1) correct guess and snatch up the Mongolian BBQ dinner prize at the Kekoa-gigi cattle call on July 12….

    No…it is not me. 🙂

  93. d1shima July 2, 2012 10:23 am

    Evidence: see A-house’s #91

  94. d1shima July 2, 2012 10:25 am

Of course, the response, “Ohhhh…no wondah!” is always, uhhh….provocative! 😈

  95. NotNasti July 2, 2012 10:33 am

Kyla Ross may not be “from Hawaii”, but native Hawaiian blood courses through her veins, so her connection to Hawaii is undeniable, and worth our attention and support.

  96. Shoko July 2, 2012 10:33 am

Aside from basing someone’s facial characteristics and speech, I realized the fool proof method of knowing if a person has Hawaii roots is if you see him wearing da rubbah slippah.

  102. Jeff July 2, 2012 11:01 am

#90 Just have to comment as I really liked 24 too. If you like 24, I would suggest Prison Break, it’s a similar type show and it’s also on Netflix.

Both fast paced, if not always realistic shows. They both also brought back popular characters that were thought to have been killed off. Tony Almeda got killed off, then they brought him back and made him the villain in one season. They do the same in Prison Break they killed off a very popular character in season 3 I think but brought her back the next season. I won’t spoil it any more for you if you are interested.

  103. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 11:13 am

First time hearing that 24 is addictive. Hubby and I have never watched that show, so we don’t know what we are missing.

Hubby likes to watch reality shows like Survivor, Amazing Race, House Hunter as well as sports and 60 Minutes. He watches a lot of movie DVDs from Netflix, also.

I watch only sports and the news. Nothing else. I don’t even know how to record a show on DVR. Lol. What a nincompoop.

  104. PowderPuff July 2, 2012 11:14 am

Okay whatever, Last Call…when it comes down to it, you’ll be cheering for her anyway in some shape of form – in one month. If you consider youself American, that is.

  105. tommui July 2, 2012 11:20 am

#80 SHOKO – Kyla is very endearing!

But she is young and may not have realized the enormity of it all!

  106. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2012 11:22 am

The way I view it is yesterday’s item was written on the perspective of a former Warrior football player and now proud parent. It was current and, obviously, of interest to many readers.

Whether some choose not to participate in the discussion, it is up to them. But for those who do, and I count myself as one of them, then we’re free to discuss it. Same as if we choose to discuss “24,” Mongolian beef or Al’s birthday.

  107. A-joe July 2, 2012 11:23 am

To my former valley brethren; Hau’oli La Hanau, braddah al!

I go cheer for Kyla! No reason needed!

  108. SteveM July 2, 2012 11:30 am

    Thanks, ST!

    Mongolian beef.

Better than Mongolian BBQ (since I don’t eat much veggies)… 🙄

I have noticed two styles– a thick reddish sauce and a light brown one. Where is the best reddish sauce one?

  109. A-House July 2, 2012 11:32 am

    SteveM:

    master gas griller is MP!

  110. RedZone July 2, 2012 11:34 am

Holy choongerooie. What da hell was that all about?

As for Kyla she is on team USA and I will be cheering for all of them.

  111. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 11:34 am

SteveM: well, I have grilled kalbi on my gas grill, but no Tsaikos have ever watched me do it. So, I guess I don’t count. Lol.

Who the heck can it be??? Koakane listed so many Tsaikos already and not one is the one!

    The suspense is killing me.

  112. A-joe July 2, 2012 11:40 am

Mahalo for guessing, A-House. Nobody stay participating. Pua Ting.

Eh, it’s open to lurkers too, you know. Free Dinner on SteveM! Can take home a massive doggie bag and have leftover lunch for 6 days! No can go wrong!!

    =)

  113. SteveM July 2, 2012 11:40 am

A-House — not MP, but since this is your first guess, you may have another…. 🙂

But MP is an interesting guess because I am not positive that he ever met my well-known Tsai-ko… who “hides in plain sight”.

  114. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 11:41 am

Kekoa: I’ll be sorely disappointed if Hale Ikena does not serve champagne. Just 1 glass will do.

Tasted Italian champagne at Sarento’s last night. It was perfect.

  115. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 11:44 am

A-Joe: you coming or what? No shame, even though you guessed wrong.

  116. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 11:45 am

    who is MP?

  117. A-joe July 2, 2012 11:48 am

    Kekoa-

kindly tell your roommate, “mahalo” for letting me borrow her portable Pakini B.

Sooooo easy and good fun when just gotta follow braddah Kaipo. =)

  120. WarriorNY July 2, 2012 11:59 am

    @jeff,

You’re absolutely right. Prison Break was intense. I caught it last year. I really enjoyed how smart they made the main character. The first season is great. I love Netflix; I’ve watched countless seasons of TV shows basically for their subscription fee. 24 & Firefly are my faves…

    @Gigi,

You and your hb is going to love 24. You better set aside a couple weeks or months of your time cuz it is addicting… But as a first timer, Enjoy!

  121. Warrior Dave July 2, 2012 12:00 pm

Happy Birthday Al! So glad for all the scoops you provide. Although most of them are in code 😀

When we were single and dating, hubby took me to the Point After. That was a disaster. A romance-killer because the music was so loud!

For lounge music, I prefer soft jazz. Shari Lynn type of music. Lol. Old fogey, yeah?

Two bottles of champagne and five shots of Crown would have made ‘The Point’, much more romantic.

  127. Old School Dave July 2, 2012 1:08 pm

    that should be:

fingers are too fat for these text keys (and also no can write).

  128. A-joe July 2, 2012 1:14 pm

gigi- I only guessed because nobody was participating. I tried to eliminate all the usual and regular suspects.

Mahalo for the invite but, ‘Sports and I have another engagement.

  135. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 1:54 pm

Al: I used to watch House Hunters, but stopped cuz if you’ve seen one house, you’ve seen em all.

Hubby loves that channel. He watches other shows on it.

    gigi and hubby

    Kekoa (and Diane?)

    SteveM

Looks like an intimate get together, which is fine with me. Haven’t touched base with SteveM and Kekoa in ages.

  141. Shoko July 2, 2012 2:05 pm

Wonder if Boise State would be interested in a nonconference game when they join the BE. As much as I dogged them every chance I got, I must say…Im going to miss them.

  142. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:06 pm

Shoko: didn’t we lose to UNLV last year? embarrassing!!!

  144. al July 2, 2012 2:17 pm

    stevem

    btw…what was the question anyway?

  145. al July 2, 2012 2:19 pm

its not nsf, but, it could be mrs. nsf because she always liked to grill.

it could be nsf’s friend who’s name escapes me.

then again, 808ike made some awesome stuff whenever he surfaced.

  146. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:20 pm

Al: “which well known Tsaiko is famous for gas grilling meats? He has to be seen by other Tsaikos, and he has to use a traditional gas grill with lava rocks, etc.”

  147. al July 2, 2012 2:21 pm

then again, it could be a trick question???

so dpk, might be a guess since he was the commandeer of everyone’s grill within his reach.

then, again it could have been the one who first got everyone to camellia’s.

    what was the question?

  148. al July 2, 2012 2:22 pm

well, gigi, then it could be pele’s hubby.

  149. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:24 pm

actually could be me, because i have such a grill. But no Tsaikos saw me grill on it. So, it’s not me.

  150. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:25 pm

I assume it’s a guy because SteveM did not say it was a Tsaikette. He said it was a Tsaiko.

  151. al July 2, 2012 2:29 pm

now the only tsaiko that used to haul a gas grill to the aloha stadium was stretch.

but, someone relieved him of that grill so he now uses a 12″ charcoal broiler.

i don’t recall anyone lugging a gas grill otherwise.

although, chawan_cut and his wsn gang did utilize several gas grills.

  152. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:30 pm

    SteveM: BG?

  153. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:32 pm

  154. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:33 pm

Well, I guess I better not give any misleading hints. Where’s SteveM when you need him!

  155. SteveM July 2, 2012 2:34 pm

The grill looks something like these… not sure of the exact model since I usually only eat, not cook (and he wouldn’t let me too)… but it has a propane tank…

I did not say it was Aloha Stadium tailgate–that would have been too obvious–but everyone assumed a tailgate. There is more “evidence” than that, but

  159. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:46 pm

whoa! Al won the free dinner? Lol. Amazing!

  160. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:47 pm

Al: after all that, you not redeeming your prize???

  161. SteveM July 2, 2012 2:47 pm

For those who are wondering why Stretch came to mind when I thought of a gas griller. My proof/rationale is in 4 scenarios, each witnessed by fewer and fewer people…

    (1) A few seasons ago, Stretch posted on the blog that his grill was stolen when he was in the stadium watching the UH football game. I had seen his grill at his tailgate on many occasions and thought you would need at least two guys and a truck to swipe that big honkin’ gas grill of his. 🙁

Unfortunately–I think this happened more than one season. Not sure now. But his predilection for big grilling was confirmed, oddly enough, at the last Cruiser Call (4) ) by an impeccable source. 🙂

    (2) Those that tailgate and attend the UH home games almost always stop at Stretch’s tailgate before and/or after the game. Especially since you literally walk past it from Richardson Field. While I do not stop at tailgates just to look at their grill, it is likely most visitors would have noticed over the years. 🙂

Gotta do some real-life chores now. BBL

  162. al July 2, 2012 2:48 pm

so gigi, in the old days the mongolian bbq prices were based upon weight. one would pay by the pound.,

so if hubby loaded up he’ll get what he paid for. i know from past experiences he no shame and can whack a meal. so let him be forwarned this time.

they may have minimum surcharge as well, which would only be proper.

  163. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:51 pm

Al: if we have to pay by the pound, what is the rate? Kekoa said he would ask them today. Where is he?

Last night, hubby’s osso bucco cost $40 at Sarento’s. Now that was over priced.

  164. al July 2, 2012 2:52 pm

    why is that so amazing?

  165. SteveM July 2, 2012 2:54 pm

    Winner?

Well, Koakane guessed Stretch, albeit en masse… so I guess he and Al win. I’ll buy them both the Mongolian BBQ dinner that night. Non transferable, no rainchecks. 🙂

Remember, like on a mainstream cruise ship, alcohol is not included… 👿

  166. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:54 pm

We are not used to paying $40 for a dish.

  167. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:56 pm

Hope both Koakane and Al can make it to the dinner on July 12.

Should be a lot of fun.

  168. al July 2, 2012 2:56 pm

you pay by the ounce for mongolian bbq.

40 bucks for osso bucco (hopefully a nice sized one or two) with the view at the “top of the I”(the original name of the eateryd) and the table service is the going rate these days. in fact, rather reasonable i’d say.

for osso bucco i like to go to paesano’s in manoa. they also make their own pasta.

  169. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 2:58 pm

The ambience at Paesano in Waimalu area is classier than the one in Manoa. I ate at both only once.

Don’t like the odor of garlic inside the restaurant, though. Too strong.

  170. al July 2, 2012 3:10 pm

gigi…hale ikena mongolian bbq is 65 cents per ounce.

  171. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2012 3:13 pm

that’s not too bad when you consider veggies dont weigh that much.

I guess the beef and lamb plus the sauce will weigh the most.

  172. jojo ® July 2, 2012 3:16 pm

    Happy Birthday Al!

  173. Buffoman July 2, 2012 3:41 pm

So with BSU jumping out of the MWC to the BE, did they feel that their petitioning of for entry of their other athletics is assured (as BE said they would help and SDSU is pushing hard on other BW members)?

Or is this just rolling the dice on their part simply because the dollars are just too big to pass up, even with the risks.

Funny, we met a wahine at da Force game last night. She saw da green and came down to meet and talk story. First thing out of my mouth, “Howzit!” Second thing out of my mouth, “Where you grad from?” Honest! No joke! I neva even get her name! hahaha! Hope the other girl got her name. She even stuck around with us in the Bud Light Zone for the rest of the game! Still neva think of asking her name until today… 24 hours later! Had so much fun at da game, I don’t even recall if someone took a pic with her. Oh well, next game, hopefully!

Bruddah, I swear we think alike!

Yesterday, after da Force game was pau and we was all lining up to get onto da field to talk story, I spocked one wahine across da opposite side of da arena, wearing one Philadelphia Eagles #10 jersey. I told everybody, “Eh, look across ova dea… one moa UH fan!” Somebody said, “eh, das not UH. Das one Eagles jersey.” I said, I no care. “Wearing green… so I going claim ’em as one fan!”

First thing she did when she got onto the field? She went straight to the Bryant Moniz crowd, to get one autograph! I said, “See? Told you I was going claim her as one Warrior fan!” Hahaha!

  178. Wes'side Warrior July 2, 2012 4:01 pm

All this nonsense talk about Kyla and where she is “officially” from, according to that online authority… Wikipedia…

All I know is, just ’cause my younger kids were born (and raised so far) on the mainland, that doesn’t make them “non-Hawaiian”. They know their roots, and live it most of the time. Only one of my kids was born in Hawaii… my oldest son. But, we moved to Michigan when he was 1 year old. Does that take away from his Hawaii connection? How about my oldest daughter? She was born in an army hospital in Korea, and only spent her childhood years of 1-4 years of age in Hawaii, before moving to Michigan and graduating from a high school in Michigan. Does that take away from her Hawaiian roots? My kids (and my wife, who is Korean, by the way) all have a connection to Hawaii because of me and my ‘ohana. They will always have that connection, whether or not we move back… whether or not they go to school there.

    Nonsense.

    Go, Kyla!

  179. Wes'side Warrior July 2, 2012 4:02 pm

Wait, the guessing is still ongoing? I guessed SteveM yesterday? Was I wrong? Didn’t see if my guess was responded to or not.
