DC Mason reassigned to non-coaching job

Defensive coordinator Tom Mason has been reassigned to a non-coaching job in the academic center ahead of Saturday’s season finale against Louisiana-Monroe.

Mason said he was informed on Monday. Interim head coach Chris Naeole confirmed the move following this morning’s practice.

Mason is the second assistant reassigned following Norm Chow’s firing on Nov. 1. On Nov. 3, running backs coach Wayne Moses was reassigned to administrative duties.

It also is believed graduate assistant Randall Joyner has been relieved of coaching duties. Joyner helped prepare the scout offense that went against UH’s defense in practices.

Abraham Elimimian, a former UH cornerback who was hired as defensive backs coach in March, will call the defensive plays this week.

Mason also had coached the inside linebackers. Now Kurt Gouveia, who handled the outside ‘backers, will coach all the linebackers.

Abe must be excited at the opportunity. Good luck to the Warrior alum. Be aggressive and go get em.

Hooo boy….. I’ve heard that Abe doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s doing on the field on game day….. now he’s gonna be running the show on defense??

  5. papayalips November 25, 2015 11:26 am

Firing Chow early has been a total disaster! Beyond disappointed with UH.

  6. cocobean November 25, 2015 11:28 am

willieboy – who did you hear this from? Unless it’s from a player or someone on the sidelines who can really say if Abe has a clue or not.

  7. papajoe2 November 25, 2015 11:38 am

#5, papayalips~ Many saw the disaster that keeping Chow would have been like. He should have been let go after the second year or maybe the 3rd year. We just kept giving him another chance until too late. Now the program is in dire straits. Hope the new coach can fix things and get the football program on the right track.

  8. H-Man November 25, 2015 11:38 am

Firing Chow after the Air Force loss was not an error. Issuing the coaching staff “termination” notices by UHAD soon after was a error. It was unnecessary because assistant coaches are on one-year contracts. And, it would have been up to the new incoming head coach to evaluate and inform the assistant coaches whether they would be retained. It would have cost UH nothing to just keep its “trap” and pen silent. That’s just my opinion.

  9. Luki November 25, 2015 11:48 am

Abe was always credited with being a smart, hard nosed player, although one game, intrigued by how we would call a game defensively…

Who is the person that hired Norm? Who is the person that hired Ben? Wrong hires at the wrong time. Neither could fix what was perceived to be broken at the time. They seem to be keep the ball rolling kind of guys rather than repairmen. I don’t blame either for not being able to do their job but I do hold accountable whoever thought they could.

good move head coach Chris Naeole on moving Defensive coordinator Tom Mason could see he is burnt out !! know its Abraham Elimimian, time !! to bad you could not do the same on the offence side !!

If I was given the title Interim HC from the HC who got fired because he did not like me and this was just to piss me off.
    1. If anyone of the former HC (position coaches) boys pissed me off, I would screw them and make them do the work that the former HC had to do (besides coaching) such as admin duties.
    2. This can’t be going on now could it. WHO KNOWS

Result: Poor morale, lack of motivation, worse results.

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  18. Duster November 25, 2015 12:26 pm

After hearing about the reassignment, I wondered about who the DC would be. I suspected that it would be Abe because he was a DC for a year at Simon Fraser. He also worked as a graduate assistant at SMU under Tom Mason, so the defensive schemes should not be foreign to him. It’s a one game audition under the pressure of time constraints. I think he’ll do fine.

  19. papayalips November 25, 2015 12:31 pm

Completely stunned by the non-professionalism of the interim football team leaders. the only thing I’m looking forward to is this nightmare ending right after the game ends. Not good for the seniors!!

To those upset over coaches allegedly not performing their duties in a “professional” manner, you should keep in mind that contemporary athletic departments are run on an incentive basis: the salary is just to get you to show up at the door.

Let’s recall what Ferd Lewis reported: “Ben Jay accumulated an average of more than $13,200 per month in bonuses during his tenure as the University of Hawaii’s athletic director and was due a lump sum $370,000 bonus payment upon his departure under terms of his 2012 contract…Jay was paid more than $1 million for his 28-month tenure.”

Every “feel good” you have or had about the UH athletic department is really a bonus payment to someone above their salary: GPA success, bonus payment; meaningless win against a nobody on the basketball court, bonus payment; improve a facility, bonus payment.

If you think people in the AD are working hard for their salary and love of UH or Hawaii, you are sadly mistaken.

The agents working for these guys will always trump any bureaucratic lawyer UH employs to read a contract.

If you want to be a D1 program, you need to realize that people don’t succeed due to pride, loyalty, or a desire to work hard: they do it for the money.

So, next time you hear of some good news about the athletic department take a peek at your wallet, because some cash just went bye-bye.

OMG – a rookie at this position ? “It also is believed graduate assistant Randall Joyner has been relieved of coaching duties. Joyner helped prepare the scout offense that went against UH’s defense in practices.”

When you lose by 40 and 50 points, means a team is not prepared. Means coaches has not done their homework on opposing team. Now we know why .

  38. bowwar November 25, 2015 1:54 pm

I am surprised that Mason has been deemed a “bad egg”, as he didn’t come across that way in the various radio interviews of him…

  39. oldtimer808 November 25, 2015 1:59 pm

#119 and #120 from previous blog…As I recall, Dino Babers applied and was beat out by Chow. JJ applied and was beat out by Von Appen. I guess what I’m saying is UH can’t spot early talent if it slapped them upside the head.

JJ was not beat out by Von Appen, JJ did not apply. The committee went after JJ after Von Appen was let go. JJ was the head coach for the San Diego Chargers and had expressed interest in the Hawaii head coaching position. Yes Hugh Yoshida did hire Von Appen but he was the AD that hired JJ. Coach Cal Lee was also on the list after Von Appen was fired.

  40. oldtimer808 November 25, 2015 2:01 pm

bowwar JJ is not a flake. He has an imaginative mind for football and for marketing. Does that make him a flake?

  41. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2015 2:21 pm

    Re: Termination notices.
    I guess they’re more like non-renewal notices.
It’s a good move for the next head coach. After McMackin was forced out, none of the assistants was officially let go. Yes, yes, I know they’re one-year contracts. But it’s always assumed the contracts will be rolled over. Anyway, because everyone was let go but the assistant coaches, that meant the new coach (Chow) had to “fire” coaches to make room for his new staff. That was really unfair to make somebody fire people he did not hire.
This time, if the new coach wants to retain an assistant, he just hires him back.
Also, there were questions about why coaches are asked to “stick around” until their contracts expires. It actually is to their benefit. It’s easier to get a job when you have a job, the saying goes, so as long as they’re on staff, they can use letterhead, equipment, etc. to help land a new job.

  42. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2015 2:26 pm

    Balko:
Joe’s Crab Shop on the mainland is trying a new tactic of not allowing tips. Instead, higher priced food supposedly will trickle down to waiters/waitresses to replace the tip money.
I think UH should do away with the bonus system. First, bonuses aren’t going to make a person coach harder. Second, UH never sets aside the money in case the bonus criterium is reached. I remember the football coaches had to wait a year for Hawaii Bowl money because the AD didn’t set aside any money from the bowl for bonuses.

  43. kev-1 November 25, 2015 2:27 pm

I’m all for Naeole sending messages. However, these changes should have happened right when he became interim HC. The fact that they are happening now does nothing but further decrease morale.

Blowing people out of the water and publicly placing blame works in the beginning to let people know that certain behaviors won’t be tolerated. But for it to be an ongoing thing? That has negative impacts on morale too.

  45. Casual Observer November 25, 2015 2:44 pm

It would have been nice to seen Beau Reilly in some of the games that were out of hand. However, if he was a legitimate “answer”, wouldn’t the coaches see his performance in practices, and that he was performaning equal to or better than Woosley or Wittek and therefore deserving of playing time?

  46. Balko November 25, 2015 2:56 pm

Stephen, regarding the elimination of tips; it works great for the business (customers hate tipping, welcome the relief of skipping that part of the transaction, and frequent those businesses more).

However, the employees hate the practice: they make so much money that is largely untaxed, they are willing to do a job that is constantly demeaning (and dangerous to women who routinely experience harrowing levels of sexual harassment).

There are drops in customer service once those employees realize and accept that that their wages at capped and totally taxable. It is a race to the bottom after that. Businesses want to maximize profits, so they inevitably cut back on wages, and, in turn, drive out experienced, high performing wait staff.

As it relates to D1 athletics, with so many well heeled departments out there, it would take a brave and/or foolish AD to be the first school to eliminate bonus payments when the practice is so entrenched in the business.

    I would welcome it though.

    Mahalo for your interesting reply.

  47. H-Man November 25, 2015 3:10 pm

It’s the last game of the season, I’m going to show support for the team and players. Just hoping Coach Naeole makes it fun for everyone. Just want coaches and players to do their best and whatever happens, happens.

  48. Shoko November 25, 2015 3:20 pm

I guess naming Naeole AHC is Chow’s way of getting the last laugh.

    Hilarious.

  49. Shoko November 25, 2015 3:30 pm

Still trying to wrap my head around this recent dismissal. Naeole reassigns the coordinator when there is only one game left?

Mason asking to be reassigned sounds more plausible.

  50. JustAsking November 25, 2015 3:31 pm

Tom Mason was “shocked” that Coach Chow was fired and said that he thought the program was heading in the right direction. Hmmmmmmmm. Then he gives up on the team. At least he has been given some administrative duties so that he has to do something to earn his paycheck.

  51. Come on, man! November 25, 2015 3:40 pm

“Firing Chow after the Air Force loss was not an error.”

    yes.

“Issuing the coaching staff “termination” notices by UHAD soon after was a error. It was unnecessary because assistant coaches are on one-year contracts”

this is standard practice. Assistant coaches aren’t giving up because of the non-renewal notices. They’re giving up because the team is awful and more dysfunctional than the jackson family.

I’ll be HIGHLY surprised if UH can get it together and beat ULM, which is really sad because this will be considered the pillow fight of the week. the norm chow era (possibly the worst in UH football history) needs to be over so that a new coach can take over and start rebuilding off of what’s left of the team.

  52. Former UH Athlete November 25, 2015 4:12 pm

What we’re seeing is the downside of firing a coach mid-season.

Firing a coach typically ends up going two ways:
    1. The team rallies after the “perceived” problem is gone, and plays with renewed energy with a new voice leading them. The team may or not win much the rest of the way, but the effort is better a stretch.

    2. The team totally falls apart, the locker room fractures, and/or infighting occurs with players, coaches, or both.

UH has gone down path #2.

We are also seeing why there aren’t many “My way or the highway” personalities as head coaches at any level of football.

  53. Balko November 25, 2015 4:21 pm

Regarding Naeole; nobody likes a snitch.

Naeole’s “speaking out” shows short term thinking especially when managing a group of people who are supposed to be working toward a common goal.

If the new coaching staff keeps him, look out for more disasters on the horizon.

  54. ZGBOY November 25, 2015 4:30 pm

Did the Warriors actually get worse after Chow got fired? Hard to imagine, but they did. Naole has to remember he was on the same staff as Chow and Yes, he was part of the problem.

  55. z November 25, 2015 4:35 pm

Sometimes you need a whistle blower.

  56. Balko November 25, 2015 4:41 pm

A whistle blower provides evidence of the merit of one’s assertions, not merely spouting off wildly, with profanity, and assailing a person’s character without evidence of misdeeds.

  57. Makai November 25, 2015 4:47 pm

I try to stay positive now that Chow is gone. He needed to begone a few seasons ago. I didn’t think it be this chaotic to finish out the season. We had 4 verbal commits now 3 with Wilson committing to SJSU. Rumors going around Timoteo looking at Wasu. Would leave us with 2. Bad press for the program and it hurts recruiting even though it seems like nothing is going on in that front right now.

  58. C-Pop November 25, 2015 5:04 pm

Veteran coaches like Wayne Moses & Mason being reassigned is bad! Whoever made the decision to elevate an inexperienced assistant coach like Chris Naeole over Moses & Mason had to rub these long time coaches. Reassignments probly reflect old school assistants not being respected for their experience.

I think the termination notices to all staff are standard procedures of the HC is fired.

In any case, all assistant are year by year contracts so getting the notice to terminate shouldn’t change much. If the HC is fired, then all assistants need to start looking for their next job. If you can prove to the new coach that you’re a good recruiter, then there’s a chance you’ll be re-hired by the next guy. However the next guy usually wants his own staff to do it his way.

The truth is now being seen.

Whether or not Chow was a great, mediocre, or poor couldn’t really been seen now that we can see Chow was surrounded by bad coaches.

I’m going to say had Chow been given the opportunity to get coaches he wanted because the budget allowed for it, things very well could have den different.

It’s like saying if you were going to build a house and had a budget. As you spent on some things you saw the budget get tighter. You may very well find that your furniture will not be what you exactly want. Your carpet may not be exactly the type you want, and many other things may not be exactly what you want. yet you will buy it because it’s all you can afford. I’m seeing now that perhaps this is what Chow went through, he didn’t get who he wanted, he got who we could afford.

Hey, keep in mind JJ funded his other coaches salaries to get who he wanted, not what the state could afford. Chow is pake’ he not going pay and instead opted for truing to teach younglings….nah, joke joke, i don’t know but maybe that was his plan.

Nonetheless, looking at it from this perspective, all of this falls squarely on the legislature.

I’m not sure now. It feels just as bad now as it was then. I’ll say one thing though.
The crowds in those days were a lot better. The 2007 unbeaten season spoiled everybody. All JJs fault. OK, JJ, now get us out of this mess and get us to being at least respectable first, then winning seasons, and bowl games. We’re just asking for a minor miracle here!

  84. 808 November 25, 2015 7:10 pm

76, What? Ok. Not sure where you are going there. But, hey ok, yeah alright what you said.

What I was saying was, couldn’t they have fired him with cause? I think if it’s with cause, he doesn’t get paid. You have a good evening, morning or night in your neck of the woods!

  87. Legislature November 25, 2015 7:30 pm

    And yours is nonsense

  88. Legislature November 25, 2015 7:31 pm

    Don’t argue little child

  89. Come on, man! November 25, 2015 7:32 pm

#86. you know, sadly, that’s the first post you made that actually makes sense and isn’t annoying. much respect to you.

  90. Legislature November 25, 2015 7:34 pm

Hawaii’s favorite with rice…. They call it musubi

  91. Legislature November 25, 2015 7:36 pm

You know nothing about respect. Ask your mom and dad?

  93. Nanakuli November 25, 2015 7:52 pm

I hope UH can hire a coach by Nov. 30th. We had a month to look for the next June Jones.

  94. el burro sabio November 25, 2015 7:53 pm

Since a lot of you are backing candidate because of what they MIGHT do or who they MIGHT bring in, I’ll throw out a name (for entertainment purposes only).
Kevin Gilbride. He MIGHT bring in his pal JJ as OC, MIGHT bring his brother-in-law Mike Cavanaugh as O-line coach, and MIGHT bring in son Kevin as the receivers coach (currently an assistant coach for NY Giants), among others. Never mind that he won’t have the money to pull this off, he MIGHT be able to do it, no harm in asking just like there’s no harm in asking Niumatalolo or Babers or even Nick Saban.

  95. Come on, man! November 25, 2015 7:57 pm

Kevin Gilbride? That guy is still coaching?

  96. Legislature November 25, 2015 7:59 pm

    92 & 93 I like that… if can… Den can
    Do it Matlin

  98. Come on, man! November 25, 2015 8:11 pm

#96: he retired from coaching in 2014.

also, i don’t feed trolls, sorry. this is probably the last time i’ll respond to you.

  99. oneseason November 25, 2015 8:16 pm

Firing Chow after the AF game enabled AD Matlin to officially start an open search for a new head coach. That still seems like a really good thing. The AD selected an interim head coach, the interim coach is doing his job, and the AD is supporting his coach. I am happy to defer all second guessing until after the game on Saturday.

  100. Legislature November 25, 2015 8:17 pm

Get yourself some jacks and a ball idiot. That’s the only game you know how to play
    Probably. Lol

  101. Former UH Athlete November 25, 2015 8:17 pm

I’m going to change the topic for a second and talk about the game Saturday…

Interestingly, no line has been posted yet for ULM v UH. Not sure why nothing is up yet other than the oddsmakers are trying to figure out what to make of the UH coaching situation before setting the line.

Based on metrics and being the home team, the oddsmakers probably have UH as the favorite but they are trying to figure if the team is going to show up or not.

Yes, oddsmakers do look into these sorts of things, even if the game has no significance. Back when I used to live in Vegas, oddsmakers have said on radio that UH home games tend to always have above average betting interest because Hawaii people are gamblers and games at Aloha Stadium are usually the last game on the parlay and teaser cards for College FB. The UH games tend to have a lot of reverse action with people hedging their parlay bets with the UH game as the final game of the parlay. Also, the UH game is popular at books because it’s the only live game going late.

In other words, UH home games mean a lot to the books.

  102. Former UH Athlete November 25, 2015 8:22 pm

    98. Firing a HC after the team is guaranteed not to make a bowl means you give up on current year and you want to start the hiring process ASAP.

Firing a HC before bowl eligibility is determined means you are trying to save the season if the HC is perceived as the problem.

I have no clue what the % of teams make the post season when a coach is fired mid-season with a chance to make it. I imagine it’s not great.

  103. mytake November 25, 2015 8:24 pm

Sanchez is the MVP of this team. Doesn’t quit playing. Saves a team scholarship being both kicker n punter. Can reach end zone. He’s going to NFL

  104. mytake November 25, 2015 8:24 pm

And he’s good at both positions

  105. Legislature November 25, 2015 8:28 pm

Currently -1/2 and Their QB & WR is ?

  106. Come on, man! November 25, 2015 8:31 pm

“Based on metrics and being the home team, the oddsmakers probably have UH as the favorite but they are trying to figure if the team is going to show up or not.”

I think the line is set at ULM -1. If I was betting, I would put my money on ULM, but these are two terrible teams playing each other, and UH tends to always screw me when I do bet for or against them.

  107. Legislature November 25, 2015 8:33 pm

Currently -1/2 -10 and Their QB & WR is ?

  108. Former UH Athlete November 25, 2015 8:40 pm

Well, somebody has to win Saturday…

There are two 9 game losing streaks at stake.

  109. Legislature November 25, 2015 8:46 pm

The game ends in a tie–both teams feel…..

  110. cocobean November 25, 2015 9:00 pm

Legislature did you post here under a different name? Your style remind’s me of someone who used to post mulitple times a day, then got all huhu with ST and stopped posting. If you are who I think you are….welcome back.

  111. Willie November 25, 2015 9:05 pm

As I posted 2 weeks ago, on Saturday it is almost certain that one of the interim coaches in the ULM – UH game will win their first football game as an appointed Head Coach. Say almost certain as I am not sure if there can actually be a tie in overtime.

  112. RB November 25, 2015 9:29 pm

Please stop with all this JJ nonsense. He wont get the HC job. Duane Akina needs to apply for the position.

  113. hitmanhart November 25, 2015 9:41 pm

Legislature how do you keep a jack a$$ in suspense ?

  114. oldtimer808 November 25, 2015 11:15 pm

RB not Akina.. JJ is not nonsense. Akina will be another Chow. Akina has been away too long.

#91 & 92-Legislature- You talk about respect but you sure don’t show it! Acting like an elder admonishing a youngster. Shame on you! Treat everyone with civility and respect.

  117. KAR November 26, 2015 3:54 am

No to Akina as the head coach! He’s got a lot of coaching experience but has never been a head coach. He will be 59 in January and making him a head coach now is just as risky as getting Chow his first head coach job at 65. He would be a great choice as a DB coach or the DC job but I don’t this he would leave his current situation because UH could never match the pay he has gotten from the likes of Standford, Texas, or Arizona

  118. cappie the dog November 26, 2015 4:31 am

    114.

    Right.

When they hired Norm Chow, my first thought wasn’t “kama’aina”, local boy- made good-Chow, it was, “Why did we hire somebody from BYU?”

“Don’t we still hate them?” I said aloud.

What if he hired LaVelle Edwards as his offensive coordinator?

Hawaii hired somebody who bleeds blue and white.

George Will opined that Donald Trump was deployed by the Democratic Party as a mole to undermine the Republicans, and it is with tongue-in-cheek, I apply that same theory with Norm Chow, who was sent by the BYU athletic department, still upset with Jeff Sydner striking a Heisman pose on Ty Detmer’s special day.

  119. cappie the dog November 26, 2015 6:06 am

If Navy gets by Houston tomorrow, I think the prospect of Ivin Jasper as a legitimate UH coaching candidate will be off the table. Navy, assuming they beat their arch-rival Army, will have too much to play for.

    A major bowl.

    A top ten ranking.

If the Midshipmen lose tomorrow, however, I think Jasper will apply, or, should be approached to do so.

I’m disappointed that nobody agrees with me.

It’s not as if I’m some troll deadpanning names such as Steve Sarkisian or Brady Hoke.

Look at what happened to Boise State.

Look at how the SEC nearly went 0-2 against the triple option.

I think it’s so striking that Georgia Southern was able to compete at the FBS level with such immediacy.

As a provisionary FBS school, they were 9-3.

    This season, they’re going bowling.

I know Georgia Tech has been inconsistent over Paul Johnson’s tenure, but the Yellow Jackets are not analogous to Hawaii. They’re from a Power Five conference; we’re not.

    Navy is our analogue.

Look what they are poised to do.

But June Jones, yeah, I’m fine with that.

As long as AD Matlin doesn’t tap some crazy outlier, like a Steve Sarkisian.

  120. Maddog50 November 26, 2015 6:25 am

Happy thanksgiving to the Warrior Faithful-have a. Great day and remember it will get a whole lot better real soon. When you give up the points we have in the last several contests you gotta look a couple places but preparation and certainly some calls going all the way back to New Mexico game. It will work out for all and dang it I just want a win-off the subject I saw a Thanksgiving clip featuring athlete and coaches. Does anybody know if Nainoa Frank is related to Larry Frank and if so how. He looks very much like him-anybody? GO WARRIORS!

  121. Hank November 26, 2015 6:30 am

Good. Mason has been cruising and collecting a paycheck. Haven’t seen anything new from him since NC was fired.

  122. papajoe2 November 26, 2015 7:03 am

Does anybody remember the running back that verbally committed to Hawaii, then changed his mind and signed with another school? This was recently. He was under the radar until he had, what I believed was a 300 yard and a couple of 200 yard rushing games. Where did he go (Washington State? Oregon State?) and how is he doing? I think his last name could be Ross.

  123. nanakuli November 26, 2015 7:14 am

June Jones is all you need to know.

  124. NotNasti November 26, 2015 8:10 am

Papajoe: Harris Ross is at Contra Costa Community College. He committed to Oregon State but never enrolled there. He is having a so-so season. http://www.cccaasports.org/sports/fball/2015-16/players/harrisrossy5am?view=gamelog

  125. Shoko November 26, 2015 8:24 am

    Happy Thanksgiving all!

  126. RB November 26, 2015 8:44 am

@114 Give me a break, Akina has been away too long? Then what about all the Dino Babers, Ivan Jasper, etc talk about being HC? Being away from the islands for a long time has nothing to do with winning games.

  127. Come on, man! November 26, 2015 8:48 am

why do you think duane akina would make a better head coach over the current candidates?

  128. Old School Dave November 26, 2015 8:55 am

Have a feeling that there will be an assistant who will move on and end up becoming successful, elsewhere. Much like Mark Banker, current Nebraska DC, who was a one and done assistant for Bob Wagner in 1995.

Change likely coming at Fresno State after this Saturday.

  129. Boolakanaka November 26, 2015 9:04 am

Happy gobble gobble. I’m not sure what type of HC Duane would make, except to say, he is smart, well liked, one of the most respected DB coaches nationally, and has placed more DBs on NFL rosters, than any other coach in the nation, in the last 25 years–that counts for something.

  130. z November 26, 2015 9:11 am

Wonder if Naole already knows who the new head will be?

  131. na alii pride November 26, 2015 9:19 am

Agree with Old Timer, Akina going be another Chow. We have to get away from these old guys that have never been head coaches. That was the last two guys and look where we are.

  132. Shoko November 26, 2015 9:21 am

I think DeRuyter has a pretty hefty contract buyout.

  133. S.peezy55 November 26, 2015 9:23 am

    KLEENEX PLEASE!!

  134. RB November 26, 2015 9:23 am

Duane Akina has experience coaching on both sides of the ball. defensive backs coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator.

  135. Shoko November 26, 2015 9:25 am

Looks like DeRuyter is replacing both his coordinators, Schramm and Toth, after this season. so, its sounds like he’ll be here for at least another season. Might have a couple new Hawaii head coaching candidates?

  136. Come on, man! November 26, 2015 9:26 am

“I think it’s so striking that Georgia Southern was able to compete at the FBS level with such immediacy.

As a provisionary FBS school, they were 9-3.”

fun fact: their coach, willie fritz, is looking to leave for iowa state, and from what people are saying, would actually prefer to run a spread type offense with a lot more passing involved. he seems to be forced to run the power run option because that’s what GSU has always run and has the players for, and the athletic department and the boosters weren’t excited to see that change. they played georgia close but also got smacked around by west virginia.

but yes, GSU is a good and well coached team, even if their conference is extremely terrible and their schedule sucks. Navy is a good and well coached team, but their schedule is also really soft.

if UH converts to the triple option, say goodbye to any talented wide receivers and quarterbacks (current and prospective recruits), especially coming from local high schools. Especially those whose goal it is to play their positions in the NFL. talented left tackle recruits might not come because they won’t learn how to pass block. talented running backs would probably not be featured and get enough touches. etc.

of course, you could probably win with the triple option without any of these, especially at the mid major level where you play at most 1-2 P-5 teams a season an 1-2 D-IAA teams, with the rest of the schedule being filled up soft conference opponents, but personally, i think triple option football is boring to watch. it’s kind of cool because you hardly see it anymore, but after the novelty wears off, it’s very boring to just see dives and pitches going 3-5 yards every play.

and once the big boys play you, and you’re down 21-0 in the second quarter, good luck.

  137. Boolakanaka November 26, 2015 9:28 am

Duane is also known as one of the nations top position coach recruiters…

  138. A-House November 26, 2015 9:50 am

    Happy Thanksgiving Day!

    now, into my usual rant:

#135 – how do you characterize “talented QB and wide receivers”? besides the 2006-07 group has UH ever gotten a a talented QB and WRers? not in my opinion.

very few talented OL or WR from the mainland have matriculated to UH even when UH had JJ and the RNS “system” — playing for a Power5 team is more rewarding than any lower level

anyone notice how “quiet/totally silent” Kirk Herbstreet has been about criticizing the RNS since to many pro and college teams have used the RNS principle to run their offense today?

unless something big happens, UH will never be able to draw the top HS talent; including from Hawaii – yes, there are a few exceptions like Kennedy T.

and, so the beat goes on – mid-level school with mid-level athletes ( at least for football )

  139. S.peezy55 November 26, 2015 9:50 am

Or maybe we need some cheese

  140. A-House November 26, 2015 10:01 am

NotNasti~Mahalo for the info. I was just curious.

  150. papajoe2 November 26, 2015 10:44 am

Comeon, man! I think that a running back can be a featured runner in the triple option. Needs speed and moves though. Not as much touches but with a smart qb, can have a lot of yards. Just need to beat the man assigned to the pitch man. I’m not sure about the triple option here though, although anything would be better than the pro set and trying to change every year, ala Von Appen and Chow.

  151. papajoe2 November 26, 2015 10:48 am

0 NFL prospects from Hawaii in the last 4 years (Iosefa, but didn’t make the team. Still on the Patriots practice squad?). Clarke has a chance, but I think he would end up in Canada or Arena.

Hawaii and ULM are so bad there is no line on the game. As Vince Lombardi said “what the hell is going on down there.”

The Eagles stinking the joint again. Gave up 90 points in the last 2 games. As Vince Lombardi said, well, you know.
