Day after

According to his father, former UH quarterback Colt Brennan remains “heavily sedated while recovering from injuries suffered in a two-car accident Friday, and is “far from being alert. There’s no real conversation with him other than he acknowledges we’re here (with hand gestures). He hasn’t been able to speak. He’ll moan and groan, and maybe point to his neck brace. It’s uncomfortable. They have tubes and  IVs.”

Brennan, who has been treated for a punctured lung, was removed from a ventilator yesterday afternoon. He has fractures to four ribs, a left clavicle, a left cheekbone and a left eye socket.

Terry Brennan said he has not heard of any problems with internal bleeding.

* * * * *

Big game for the Warriors last night. That had to be the quietest 570 passing yards by Bryant Moniz, although we’ve never actually witnessed that many yards before.

* * * * *

In case anybody wonders, Moniz and offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich said they both were unaware of the record when it was set in fourth quarter. Rolovich said it was the plan for the first team to play through the first series of the final quarter.

* * * * *

The defense also made a statement, with the eight sacks and the numerous hurries. Good things indeed happen when a team blitzes well. It goes back to Greg McMackin’s belief at the beginning of the season that the Warriors didn’t need to blitz more, they needed to blitz better.

* * * * *

Safety Jordan Gomes is done for the season after being diagnosed with a torn ACL. He said he hopes to be back for spring practice. It’s too bad. He’s a hard worker with a good attitude. And he’s a heck of an athlete.

Great job bt Moniz last night.

  2. bb November 21, 2010 8:47 am

Too much false and inaccurate information regarding Colt. Where does all the nonsense and speculation come from?

  3. Stephen Tsai November 21, 2010 8:51 am

    bb:

The only person who can say how Colt is feeling is Colt, and he can’t talk now. Main thing is to keep him stabilized, and hope the injuries heal quickly. It’s fortunate he was wearing a seat belt.

  4. Ala Wai November 21, 2010 8:55 am

Praying for Colt, Shakti and the other driver. Wishing them a speedy and complete recovery.

Also praying for the families and attending doctors and nurses to provide the best care possible.

  5. bb November 21, 2010 8:56 am

I saw those pics on tmz. Unbelievable.

The way that Billy V made it seem last night, Colt was watching the game, cheering and calling plays. Sometimes I feel as though Billy V just likes to hear himself talk. Imagine him at a Karaoke party. Good luck getting your hands on the mic.

So many news outlets picked up that he was alert. The latest quote from his father was that he was far from it.

I just hope Colt gets better.

This post on the TCU message board claims that the TCU Board of Directors has scheduled a conference call for Tuesday and that the members haven’t been told the subject.

    http://www.killerfrogs.com/msgboard/index.php?showtopic=126166&st=0

If true, the call may be to discuss and approve a Big East invitation. And if TCU goes to the Big East, that probably seals UH’s football invitation to the Mountain West.

  14. labrat November 21, 2010 9:24 am

    Get well Colt.

  15. Shoko November 21, 2010 9:28 am

Well, it might give UH some bartering in travel subsidies at least. Depends on how bad the MWC wants UH football in the wake of TCU’s departure.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Prayers for Colt, Shakti and the Big Island driver. Hope all are on the road to recovery.

And the next may be offensive to some and all but …

    FOOTBALL “TRUTHS”…

    (1) What does the average Univ. of Georgia player get on his SATs?

    ……..Drool.

    (2) What do you get when you put 32 West Virginiacheerleaders in one room?

    ……..A full set of teeth.

    (3) How do you get a Nebraska cheerleader into your dorm room?

    ……..Grease her hips and push.

    (4) How do you get an Ohio State graduate off your porch?

    ………Pay him for the pizza.

    (5) How do you know if an Alabama football player has a girlfriend?

……There is tobacco spit on both sides of his pickup.

    (6) Why is the Kentucky football team like a possum?

….Because they play dead at home and get killed on the road.

    (7) What are the longest three years of a Texas Longhorn football player’s life?

    ……..His freshman year.

    (8) How many Oklahoma freshmen does it take to change a light bulb?

    ……..None. That’s a sophomore course.

    (9) Where was O. J. Headed in the white Bronco?

……. Durham, North Carolina. He knew that the police would never look at Duke for a Heisman Trophy winner.

    (10) How do you keep a Northwestern football player out of your front yard?

    ………………..Erect a goal post!

    AND FINALLY

    (11) Why did Tennessee choose orange as their team color?

………You can wear it to the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday, and picking up trash along the highways the rest of the week.

This guy looks real interesting.. will be here on 12-4

Ellis Henderson is the first player in GSHL History to earn first-team honors at four different positions (WR/DB/KR/AP). Ran for 84 yards on five carries as a junior and caught 37 passes for 717 and nine TDs. Also had three returns for touchdowns. Henderson benches 235-pounds, squats 385 and claims a 36” vertical jump.

At last night’s post game press conference, McMackin alluded to a big time Nebraska receiver and one other big time recruit who he did not mention. I was wondering who these guys are? Were these guys at the game visiting? If not, maybe I mis-remembered!!!!!

  38. NON-SPORTS ITEM – skip over if you like, but the subject does impact UH. Will have an analysis by the end of the week. I made a major typographical error in yesterday’s posting about earmarks.

    From today’s editorial section:

Earmarks seem to have become the devilish symbol of government waste, even though they account for little more than three-tenths of 1 percent of federal spending.

  56. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 21, 2010 12:53 pm

Awesome 1st half and Game win for us, bad for the house!…

Only 2 issues on the downside:

    1) Boy I miss Dan Kelly. Is Enos being asked to kick it ridiculously short on every single kickoff like this entire season because the Coach knows our Defense can stop them lol? Or does he not really have the leg? Kick off coverage was special…again.

    2) Why did no one tell Salas to stand like 10-15 yards further back on punt returns so he wouldn’t have to back peddle to field every single punt? Figure after the 3rd or 4th time someone would have said something.

    .

    On the upside:

Defense good, Offense good, and Clock Managment was REALLY good. The last 2.5 minutes of the 1st half was THE BEST management of the game clock I have EVER seen from this coaching staff. THUMBS UP! The play calling, the t.o., the receiver knowing he has to go down and not rush for more yards so the clock wouldn’t expire. Very very good.

  57. jm2375 November 21, 2010 1:03 pm

    Howzit Tsai-kos!!

Good game last night. A little sloppy, but as someone pointed out, we’re spoiled by all the previous great games.

On to NaMaSU. Too bad they’ll be spending Thanksgiving away from home. (that includes the media guys too 😀 )

  58. Derek November 21, 2010 1:09 pm

With SMU winning and being bowl eligible there is still a chance they will be chosen to play with Hawaii. If SMU beats East Carolina they will win their division and will play Central Florida for the Conference USA title.

  59. Kekoa November 21, 2010 1:17 pm

D-1 ~ Rajah dat on da jersey.

Prayers for Dr. Wang, and CB’s friend. May they all continue to improve so that they may enjoy Thanksgiving with their loved ones. The gift of life is much to be thankful for during this particular week.

  60. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 21, 2010 1:25 pm

    Derek,

I may have misread this somewhere but I think it was something like SMU desires to go to a different bowl…something about boosters wanting a bowl closer to home.

Also there is talk that the CUSA champion or something would possibly be playing Hawaii Bowl due to some kind of weird situation with SEC bowl tie in.

That’s cool! Glad we could entertain the Aussies on holiday here. I think the other man who caught up with Alex during warmups mentioned reading about Alex in an article in the Australian paper. It’s great that Hawaii is getting some press in Australia. Helps with recruiting and tourism.

Hope Alex’s Mom can join us at the Hawaii Bowl T-Gate.

Hey, duffer. I am still at the office – so sad. Haven’t seen a lick of the NFL action today…and I think I might be here for another few hours. And yes, Slugger…very good awareness of Hawaii in Australia, esp. since their dollar is now even. They are so happy; two of them said they spent close to $2K at Ala Moana each.

They love their sports, I tell you. They knew UH had a basketball game on Wednesday and they want to go!

  71. oxtail soup November 21, 2010 3:02 pm

    # 50: Interesting article…so, the Big West is very interested in Hawaii’s men’s volleyball…?

“The Big West is perfect for Hawaii, with contained travel costs for all sports and synergy with basketball, baseball and volleyball. It is good for the Big West, because Hawaii would lift the RPI in key sports and, most importantly, enable the conference to sponsor men’s volleyball.

Five Big West schools play men’s volleyball, and six are needed to be a conference that can seek an automatic bid for its champion…”

  72. Committed Road Warrior November 21, 2010 3:09 pm

The opening line has UH (-26) over NMSU.

    For entertainment purposes, of course.

  73. Billy V November 21, 2010 3:11 pm

    Aloha Everyone:

Mahalo to bb for the comment. Clarification: My directions for comments last night came directly from Jim Donovan, who spoke to Terry Brennan directly by phone some 7 minutes before halftime. Purpose of the announcement was to express the quick recovery of Colt Brennan and the others involved in the unfortunate accident on the Big Island from the University of Hawaii Athletics Department, plus to keep everyone up to date on CB condition. Terry Brennan asked that Coltʻs picture be put up on the jumbotron when we make the announcement, it was late 2nd quarter so jumbotron couldnʻt get it up there on time so I pulled it up on my ipad to fulfill families wishes.

Never was the word “alert” used at halftime last night.

bb: I look forward to singing karaoke with you sometime soon 🙂 I promise I will give up the mic. In fact my wife often insists on it (ack!)

    Go Warriors!

  74. bb November 21, 2010 3:18 pm

I’ll eat crow. Thanks for the clarification BV.

My intention was just based on what seemed was “overly optimistic” from many different media outlets including this paper.

Much respect BV. I apologize for coming off harsh.

  75. Billy V November 21, 2010 3:54 pm

bb: Absolutely no worries. Understandable…weʻre all in same boat…hoping for a speedy recovery for everyone.

Not harsh at all 🙂 As a matter of fact, I probably wouldnʻt have responded if it hadnʻt been for the fact that it came from directly Jim Donovan and CBʻs family…so wanted to clarify.

My wife still insists I donʻt sing at karaoke 🙁 lol

  76. LizKauai (iPhone) November 21, 2010 4:04 pm

Hi Billy V! Welcome to the blog! Looking forward to the UNLV game!

Mahalo for all you do. You are about the only one I can understand on the mushy PA. 🙂

  77. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 21, 2010 4:05 pm

Big West is a pretty good fit for our sports. Good baseball, good volleyball, basketball kinda sucks but hey can’t win it all. WCC would be great but won’t allow us access unless we decided to make UH a protestant or catholic school or something and go private.

hopefully we can broker a deal fast.

  78. SteveM November 21, 2010 4:10 pm

OK — adding two more people to my Tsai-ko Karaoke Call list… 🙂

…just added bb to the experienced Tsai-ko Cruiser’s list the other day. Billy V your phrase of “…all in the same boat…” in #75 kinda struck home. 😆

  79. madeinhawaii November 21, 2010 4:11 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

If their basketball teams kinda sucks, isn’t that an advantage for Hawaii? Don’t they have an auto qualifying status for the winner come March Madness? Couple years of getting to the dance might just help the Gib to build a dynasty and get us really competitive with teams of repute.

AND having men’s volleyball in two separate conferences on the West Coast.. couldn’t hurt the Warriors.. not if both conference winners get automatic berths for the playoffs.

  80. Kaimuki Kid November 21, 2010 4:18 pm

I just cN’Tshake this feeling that we are pawns in this chess match of conferrence realignment that is happening as we speak. MWC is like going back to the Old WAC. I still consider them the Original Backstabbers…

Do we hope that TCU stays a or go to the Big East. If TCU stays do they actually need us? or does the MWC try to get Houston or SMU to come on over for a 12th team and we can realign into a 2 division east/west league. Are we being dangled this offer to put pressure on TCU to stay and have the rug pulled when TCU stays?

I’ll believe the invite when the contract is sign sealed and delivered…

  81. madeinhawaii November 21, 2010 4:25 pm

    Kaimuki Kid…

The TCU puzzle gets to me, too.

TCU has been invited as a football only. Could that be why UH was ‘asked’ as a football only member, too? Just incase TCU jumps ship?

  82. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 21, 2010 4:26 pm

    madeinhawaii,

i guess thats a good positive spin on it…then again staying in the WAC instead of going to the MWC would probably mean more conference titles. win/lose.

big west is the best fit and the only option unless we want to keep all of the other sports in the WAC except football.

  83. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 21, 2010 4:27 pm

    madeinhawaii/kaimukikid,

its good insurance. but the way i see it they want TCU to stay because then that would make for 11 teams. one short of the 12 needed for the playoff.

Easier to bring in 1 + 1 schools than 1+2 schools.

  84. madeinhawaii November 21, 2010 4:28 pm

    Hawaii… BCS #28

Now that gives the Warriors something to shoot for…. trying to end the season ranked.

  85. madeinhawaii November 21, 2010 4:29 pm

OOps.. my mistake… I jumped the gun.. that was the same ole coaches poll that we are 28 in … darn..

  86. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 21, 2010 4:32 pm

We gotta hope that 3,4 teams in the top 25 bust out to unranked teams for us to get ranked in the top 25. cant see us getting that on our own merit against nmsu and unlv.

  87. madeinhawaii November 21, 2010 4:39 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

I figure that our Warriors need to make the spread in the next two games and a couple of 7 teams with 3 or more losses need to lose one more. That should move us close to 26 before our bowl game… and how our team does there can make all the difference in final rankings.

If we go 11-3, that will be only the 4th time in school history that a Warrior team has garnered 11 or more wins.

Lots to play for! Lots to win for!! GO WARRIORS!

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

I agree. This team and it’s players needs to be challenged so that they can go into the off season knowing their weaknesses and what they have to do to circumvent/overcome them. If the summer turnout is like this past season, we could be in for a one heck of a ride next season… 2007… deja vue?

It seems the loss of Pilares really seemed to stall our Offense against Boise. We need to get two deep on the slots and Wide receivers without any significant drop off for next season.

  94. RainbowCliff November 21, 2010 4:51 pm

MIH: Big West Basketball by all accounts is going to be TOUGH for UH especially playing them at their home courts. Northridge, Riverside and Fullerton have gym arenas and I can assure you that student rowdy fans will be all over the Bows. Thunderdome in Santa Barbara get’s CRAZY as the guacho arena is packed to the rafters. Long Beach State, Irvine and Pacific won’t be easy as knowing Hawaii will be NEW to the conference will add more excitement and interest. This move to the Big West will hopefully INSPIRE UH students to come out and support the bows as opposing students from the above teams come out of their dorms and get FIRED up for their basketball teams as it is the ONLY game in town !

Don’t under estimate this conference as it won’t be EASY playing them down here in Southern and Northern California as you will see when UH play San Luis Obispo in their

    Home arena !

    Good Luck !

    madeinhawaii,

good question…i guess we have to play Rauche (sp) because he is our 2nd string…for all the hype he’s had, he’s been like the leon-jackson of the qb’s kinda disappointing.

but my question is do they have to play him with the guys who are the front-runners for starting roles next season?

Prolly for some garbage time Rausch can get in but I’d like to have seen QB1 working one or two series with some of the younger guys before he went out.

Why not start working on a little timing for next season already?

  106. madeinhawaii November 21, 2010 5:53 pm

    d1…

I suppose they don’t see the value of going beyond Raush and Austin right now. Austin will be back next year and is slated to be Moniz’s primary back-up. The position behind that is currently anybody’s guess and won’t be/can’t really be determined till after spring practice.

Rausch has been patient and very loyal to the team and I am sure his senior colleagues all want for him to get his time at the position before graduation. I hope he gets his degree and finds a future of his choosing upon graduation.

  107. Pomai November 21, 2010 5:53 pm

i couldn’t agree with you any more. i’d like to see the other qb’s get in some time and getting some real time reps in…my guess is that it only adds to preparedness.

I was on youtube and seen his running plays and I must

Was 2006 his final year and what has happen to him since leaving UH ?

Is he Samoan as I am just AMAZE of his quickness and being 4 years

out of UH he has to be playing some where as this polynesian beast

has to have a HUGE fan base when he was playing for the Warriors.

I was actually referring to QB1 getting some PT with the young receivers who will be expected to be leading candidates for starting roles next season.

With all the regularity of early season miscues as QB and receiver work to get in sync I am thinking if it is possible for guys like Billy Ray, Pollard, Avery and Miah to get some game reps with QB1 the offense would be that far ahead.

Went to the game also. Shawna Lei is no where near how good she can be. She’s still shaking off the rust and slowing getting into D1 game shape. Her talent is unmistakeable, she’s the only Wahine that’s triple double capable.

    cocobean,

Last season, in the few games Kuehu played in until her injury, the fact that she was away from D1 ball for a year was evident. Those few games in 09-10 was the ONLY time I ever saw her play and it was short of her documented capabilites and expectations.

This year, the difference is amazing and she is AlWAYS where she needs to be on the court. Just good basketball instincts.

Prayers and thoughts to all the families involved in the motor vehicle collision involving Colt. All of Hawaii is with you as everyone recovers. Seen too many of those type of collisions in my time and would say that it is miraculious that they are still with us.

Lot of aloha to those that stopped to assist at the scene. Those are very critical moments as the it’s very hectic and chaotic but with traffic control and people assuring the injured and of course others calling for first responders made the situation safe.

From Bobby’s radio show, the MWC has not offered membership to UH nor has the Big West yet. Only evaluating UH and what it brings to the “party”.

UH losing leverage by going public too early per Bobby. If they do move to the other leagues, they will probably have to pay too much in travel subsidies now.

  167. Hank November 22, 2010 7:09 am

…if the MWC concludes that UH is not in THEIR best interest…no one should be surprised…we are now in bed with the dark side…

…if we end up with egg on our face (again)…we have only ourselves to hold responsible…

…it’ll be interesting to see how much they will make US pay….

  168. papajoe2 November 22, 2010 7:16 am

I think the key here is for UH to secure the Big West for all other sports as a priority. We still have the WAC to fall back on for football only, if the MWC backs out on the verbal commitment.

  169. papajoe2 November 22, 2010 7:21 am

Of the others that contacted the Big West, I think one of it was San Jose State. The other was either Bakersfield or Santa Barbara, I couldn’t remember which. Atvantage for them? All 3 of the other schools are in the California educational system. Could be that the BW wants UH to commit early, thus announcing other teams interested.

  170. papajoe2 November 22, 2010 7:26 am

While we always cheer on our high school boys that went away, except when they are playing UH, Andrew Manley is not as mobile as we would like a QB to be. I hope that their O-line cannot block our D-line or contain our blitzes to stymie their offense. Therefore……….. POMAI, us 41, them 0.

  171. Pomai November 22, 2010 7:47 am

$165 – BC – he is so full of it.

  172. Michigan Warrior November 22, 2010 8:18 am

I think the right approach would be to move non-football to the Big West immediately, especially since Benson has already presented that as a counter-offer to the MWC’s overtures.

It almost feels as if Thompson is once again playing a game with UH. Kinda like trying to force TCU’s hand. Maybe if TCU stays, he will rescind the offer to UH. I mean, several others have pointed out that Boise, Fresno, and Reno had all received invitations, while all we got was a handshake with a “submit a plan to cover our travel expenses to the islands, and we’ll see if it’s good enough”. Hey, they got the NCAA’s Hawaii/Alaska Exemption to take care of the costs assoicated with flying to Hawaii for that football game once every couple of years. Not our fault if they don’t use it as intended, and instead, opt for a bye week.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

If you are a fan of movies, you will notice that they are much better in the original. Watching a dubbed film will never be as good as watching the original version. Why? Because in the original version, the actor’s voices are real. Everything is just like the director imagined.

  279. Matthew C. Kriner December 10, 2010 8:48 am

There are a number of theories as to why people like to watch scary movies. First off, some people don’t care for them, and the largest audience for frightening film fare tends to be older teens and people in their early twenties. There are still more mature audience members that love the thrills and chills of a scary movie, and it’s led many researchers to question why.

What you need to start of is a good mp3 mixer and a laptop if you want to be a laptop DJ like me. I recommend the Hercules RMX controller to start off with, It is cheep and durable. Next you need speakers. Got to your local DJ store and usually you can get decent speakers for around 300-800$. Lastly a crowd. Allways keep your crowd up and occupied. If they are sitting down and bored you are not very good. Email me an nicolascabralsr@yahoo.com so i can help you pick out a set. You can trust me i am experienced.
