Day after

Yep, the sun rose again.

That’s the thing. The world is on a strict schedule. Whether a football team from Hawaii wins or loses, the sun rises the next day.

* * * * *

• Last night’s effort was more along the lines of UH’s offensive philosophy: Run to set up the pass; run to set up more runs. The Warriors have enough good backs. They also have rugged linemen. Right guard Dave Lefotu just might be the next Vince Manuwai.

• Nose tackle  Moses Samia is set to undergo an MRI on his right knee today. That’s never a good thing.

• Darius Bright is expected to miss at least two games because of a separated AC joint. Bright had a good week of practice, earning the start last night, and showed what a threat he is with post-up moves on slants.  That he will be missed is a good sign because it means he was a contributor. For quite a while, he wasn’t in the conversation. The Warriors have enough depth at X receiver with Trevor Davis, Chris Gant, Justin Clapp and Corey Paclebar. If they’re in a pinch, Charles Clay, who is doing a terrific job at safety/nickelback could play there.

• Chris “Demo” Demarest deserves a game ball for directing UH’s special teams and for recruiting cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips.

• The turnstile total of under 30,000 was disappointing. But put into context, it was not that gloomy. First, few ever heard of Lamar before last week. (Two people actually came up to me to do Redd Foxx impersonations until they realized Demond Wilson’s character on Sanford and Son was named “Lamont.”) Nevada and the return of Nick Rolovich should increase ticket sales this week. UH had a tough starting point. New season ticket sales started the same week as the revelation of the Wonder blunder. Let’s just say, there were a few distractions that week. Walk-ups accounted for about a third of the crowd, including the return of the students.

• Time to start selling mini-packs — ticket packages for two or four games, at discounted prices.

• For some road games, there is a UH tailgate, where food and beverages are sold, and memories are retold. Why not do that for home games? UH doesn’t get a cut of the concessions inside Aloha Stadium, but what about a giant tailgate where plate lunches and refreshments can be sold? There could be bands and giveaways. Local fans should experience the fun that occurs on the road.

Suggestion for even more UH students to attend the game. Have a tailgate at UH. Could be one of those giant tents. If you are a student with ID then free admission. If not then $20. Drinks could be sold along with free or cheap food. Then bus to the stadium about 1-1 1/2 before the game and students with ID are free.

    A couple comments:

    The warrior walk was cool.

I don’t mind changes in the way the team comes out of the tunnel but I hate them walking out. It’s so passive and reminds me of the way the Sugar Bowl started when Georgia came out like a freight train and the Hawaii players walked out almost looking scared holding hands.

The scoreboard guy needs to manage replays and stats better.

I saw the fight and it seemed to be handled well by HPD. I go to all the games and I don’t think this is a chronic issue. Yes it was ugly but it’s not an every game problem in my opinion.

Hopefully the excitement returns to the Warrior football program. Haven’t seen it yet, but hoping.

  9. Bryson September 16, 2012 8:42 am

1 thing me and a friend noticed while watching the game is this team is very disciplined in most aspects of the game…Discipline is one of those intangibles that can win or lose a game for you…Nequan Phillips is gonna be something special he’s definetly been Mr.Johnny On The Spot these past 2 games…can’t wait to see more new players make an impact…it was also good to see UH empty their bench and get a lot of players game time reps…

  10. Derek September 16, 2012 8:43 am

I predicted 56-0. It was 54-2. Close enough. You could tell Chow’s team is very well disciplined. I can’t recall a holding penalty. Things to improve on. Scoring TDs in the red zone. Defense played well, but you wonder if some of that is the opponent. Nice to see Edwards return one to the house. This week will be tough, but Hawaii has one thing in it’s favor. Chris Ault has never won a game in Hawaii. Rolovich will be back at OC. Game could hinge on a couple of key plays. I see a close one. Hawaii by 3.

  11. gigi-hawaii September 16, 2012 8:46 am

I can just imagine how nervous and antsy the Warriors were prior to the game. I know I felt that way, myself. I was so disappointed at the slow start. Hubby and I were complaining about the lack of offense. Then, the points kept increasing and we were overjoyed.

    Great game, guys!

  12. gigi-hawaii September 16, 2012 8:48 am

Kevin: mahalo for posting the link to the Warrior Walk on YouTube. I really enjoyed it. Fun time!

    Go Warriors!

  16. HiFlyer September 16, 2012 9:17 am

    Good Morning All.

  17. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 9:18 am

Nevada wont be making the same and numerous mistakes that Lamar made last night. Also can’t count too much on special team points.

If our offense improves a lot by Saturday, we will all be smiling to the rising sun on Sunday. We had 3 chances in a row in the red zone and came out with 6 points. That was concerning.

If our offense doesn’t improve much, our defense will need to play like they did last night to come out with the W.

  18. LizKauai (iPad) September 16, 2012 9:20 am

Speaking of discipline, i like the way a Warrior used his eyes and not his mouth or fist when he received a left hook to the helmet. The the First guy get the penalty. And he did.

    Go WARRIORS!

  19. RS Awakuni September 16, 2012 9:26 am

Good game last night. Very entertaining.

Thanks to LizKauai for her generosity, Stephen Tsai for his personal delivery, and Michelle and Sean Achong for making me aware I had “won”!

    Go Warriors!!

    Good morning, gang!

  22. Whats up September 16, 2012 9:39 am

Nice win by the Warriors but the Offense still needs some work. I said this before, but the local boys that choose Colorado over Hawaii must REALLY be kicking themselves in the butt. Losing to Colorado State and FCS Sacramento State at home was really bad but the 69-14 drubbing they took from Fresno State was embarrassing. The top local talent really needs to think about it carefully before committing to PAC 12 teams like Colorado, Washington State and Washington.

  23. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2012 9:45 am

Schroeder admitted that the slow starts were not acceptable.

Then again, there is rustiness when there’s a two-week break between the opener and the second game.

True tests start this coming weekend. After that, it’s four road games in five weeks.

  24. jm2375 September 16, 2012 9:46 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Nice win last night. Good discipline, no dumb penalties. Hope the guys with the owies heal up quick. The scoreboard guy needs to wake up.

Need to go in search of a new rajio to listen to the game at the Stadium. At least the stuff coming over the PA system is intelligible now from our new seats. (Although I wish I could turn off Mr. Visperas.)

Great tailgate. Hope to see the MIA Tsaikos next week: Kevin, Ralph, jojo, M/M Lopaka43, uhfan808, hiflyer (meat doesn’t get cut up nice when you’re not there!).

  28. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 9:54 am

  32. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 10:03 am

One suggestion I have is to put a set of speakers in front of the student section.

During those intermissions where they play piped music, having speakers in front will help to give the students more energy.

Whether it be that stupid Gangnam Style or Call Me song, many students seem to want to get into it but the speakers aren’t loud enough.

  33. ewamongoose September 16, 2012 10:03 am

I fully support a UH bento concession for home games. The quantity and quality of concessions in Aloha Stadium has dropped off considerably since last season. Plus, the concessions at the South end-zone, upper level were not ready with cold drinks even as late as 5 pm.

  34. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 10:07 am

I think if they do a concession tent thing, they have to do it outside of the stadium authority grounds. I don’t think they would allow competition with center plate concessions.

The field across the way might be a possible location.

good sabbath everyone, went church yet?

the entrance walk onto the stadium field reminds me of the Father Bray Iolani coached teams. he always made his team walk to the sidelines. anoddah nice nastolgic touch by coach chow.

  45. beatnevada September 16, 2012 12:02 pm

The sound system in the stadium is shot. Also, is there a UH mascot? UH must make the games more lively to increase attendance. Copy what other schools do if you can’t come up with something on your own.

  46. Capitolist/WassupDoc September 16, 2012 12:03 pm

    Stephen – and others:

The Stadium Authority charges rent for any money-faising activities held in any of the parking lots. In addition, liability insurance is required plus hiring a special duty Stadium Authority employee to oversee the activities. I’m chairing a major recycling fundraiser scheduled in the lower Halawa parking lots next March which will include live entertainment and food sales so I have first-hand information.

However, here’s what I suggest: Get a selection of fantastic food trucks to set up just outside the Stadium and the sponsoring organization can provide roving hand-carried delivery service into the parking lot for a set fee per order.

If anyone is interested in exploring this option, catch me at one of the T-Gates at Richardson Field.

  47. RedZone September 16, 2012 12:07 pm

The sound system at the stadium is just loud noise. They should turn it off.

  48. jm2375 September 16, 2012 12:15 pm

Didn’t know you could call a fair catch on a kick-off.

  49. Iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 12:21 pm

I’m all in for giving koakane a foam spear and let him roam Thr stadium field drunk. New mascot.

  50. Iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 12:26 pm

The girl who ran on the field stumbled to our tailgate after and was harassing some of us.

She wasn’t just drunk, she must have been in something much much stronger. She wasn’t all there.

  51. LizKauai (mbp) September 16, 2012 12:34 pm

It was great to get together with Kymry and klan to watch the game yesterday.

Warrior Football has brought a great diversity of humanity into a loving family. For that, I am grateful.

Prayers and healing energy to those who have lost loved ones and are in need of upliftment.

And Good Health and Strength to our Warriors!

  52. RedZone September 16, 2012 12:38 pm

Looks like coach Chow found his sideline manager. Warriors were well organized on the sidelines.

  53. Pohakupu September 16, 2012 12:41 pm

Don’t you love it when Coach Chow had the First Team return to the field at the end of the game to honor them for their effort and first win of the season. And, have Quarterback Sean Schroeder cradle the game ball to celebrate his first win as a Division I quarterback!

  54. koakane ip4 September 16, 2012 12:51 pm

and I am for iwwthm acting stupid oh he did that already by running for a political position. excuse me.

  55. d1shima September 16, 2012 12:53 pm

Lots to love about last night’s event….and I call it that because there was much more to it than just the game.

Who knows? Maybe I may have to make it a point to stick around after the final gun and join in the new post-game traditions. 😉

  56. gobows September 16, 2012 12:54 pm

i wish the stadium would put the 1st down stats and the score by qtr’s back on the scoreboard. i really dislike the color scheme they are using. it’s nice, but the info is not easily identified, the green makes the data blend in.

  57. manoa#1 September 16, 2012 12:54 pm

we need vili da warrior back .the game is boring without him pumping up the fans.

  58. WarriorNY September 16, 2012 12:55 pm

    Pomai,

    UH 35 – 13 WarriorNY

  59. d1shima September 16, 2012 12:58 pm

Really nice to see Edwards house a KOR. Since he began doing that I’ve liked the way he “hits it” from Point A to Point B and that made for some irony last night as he fielded a ball that had rolled dead and went left to the “wedge”, cut right at midfield and finally zigzagged at the end for the score!

Anyway you like do ’em Mike…Hana Hou!

  60. d1shima September 16, 2012 1:00 pm

I have a hard time imagining needing much more than a 52-point W to get pumped up. 🙄

  61. RedZone September 16, 2012 1:03 pm

The defense pumped me up from the first snap. I saw how our lbs filled and said yeah. I knew they were ready.

  62. d1shima September 16, 2012 1:06 pm

Yep. Das why I go football…fo keep track of first downs.

  63. SAWARRIOR September 16, 2012 1:11 pm

“They did a good job after their fiasco at USC, but we didn’t help ourselves very much tonight, either,” Lamar coach Ray Woodard said. “I think we made a pretty good football team look really good, and we’re not going to beat anybody how we played tonight.”

    Lamar’s HC is a jerk.

  64. kev-1 September 16, 2012 1:12 pm

I know people hated the fake Warrior mascot costume, but I prefer that direction in terms of a mascot. Look at Sparty from Michigan St. He gets the crowd pumped and looks neat. I think where UH messed up the last time they went with a costume, was the costume was a body, but the real guys head. Sparty’s head is costume too. Looks better.

Google Sparty and you’ll see him. I think people would be okay with that.

  65. kev-1 September 16, 2012 1:12 pm

And no, I’m not talking about the marshmellow man of old.

  66. kev-1 September 16, 2012 1:15 pm

SAWARRIOR . . . that’s called poor sport. Got his a$$ kicked. Period.

  67. kev-1 September 16, 2012 1:18 pm

love the running game at UH. Passing game needs more crispness. I think Schroeder needs more zip. But he’s accurate, so I’ll take that over a bit more arm strength. He did make a very impressive throw on a roll out that looked like it took a bit of power, though.

  68. Will-I-Am September 16, 2012 1:18 pm

    SAWARRIOR:

I actually agree with the Lamar coach.

UH didnt exactly dominate the 1st quarter.

Lamar kick returner bounces the ball off his chest at the 2 yard line.

Lamar did not do themselves any favors last night.

I am sure i am missing some other key plays also.

I do think we will be much improved next week, and every week after.

  69. Will-I-Am September 16, 2012 1:21 pm

A Hawaiian Sparty would be awesome!

    Whats a good name?

  70. Will-I-Am September 16, 2012 1:25 pm

    Kev-1:

I agree with the head part. Their facial expression is always in character. They also don’t look like a pea head.

  71. A-House September 16, 2012 1:26 pm

3 obsrvations from last nite’s GAME:

    1) loved the student section – hope they bring more of their friends to Nevada’s game.

    2) quick/up tempo by UH – calling plays, sending them in and no letting time off the game clock like the past 13 years – watched Coach Chow – before the players got back to the huddle, he had already signaled the next play to 2 assistants to relay to Schroder.

    3) Hayden (sp) has recovered from whatever ailed him last season.

  72. A-House September 16, 2012 1:28 pm

also, liked the way many younger players got game experience that will help UH in future games this season and years to come – unlike before!!!

don’t know how many games UH will win in 2012, but expect to see improved play on both sides on the ball come 2013 and beyond with Coach Chow at the helm.

  73. Iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 1:35 pm

Oh trying to make a difference and working hard for my community is a stupid decision? Guess I should just screw my liver and drink greenies and maybe I’ll win a Nobel prize one day.

  74. RedZone September 16, 2012 1:43 pm

I really like our corps of runningbacks. I was really impressed with Lister. Our runningbacks were running thru a lot of arm tackles.

  75. Pomai September 16, 2012 2:05 pm

My only suggestion would be that when they enter the stadium they go all the way down to the south end zone and do the Ha’a in front of the the student section. Would have been nice if the music had played. Also if it was me I would put the drum line right in the middle of the student section.

My biggest complaint is that I had already paid for the ticket and had to sit through a constant barge of commercials on the jumbothron, and I really don’t like the commercials when the teams are lining up to snap the ball.

Big Winners last night: Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, La Tech, San Jose State, and Utah State (well almost). Anybody see what I’m getting at here?

Congratulations Coach Chow on a nice win and best of luck against the Wolfpack.

  78. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 16, 2012 2:15 pm

Take a look at Colorado fans at Fresno…They travel well and in big herds.

    http://ow.ly/i/WflF

  79. G-money September 16, 2012 2:16 pm

Can anyone tell me who chooses the songs that are played before the game during player warm ups? IMHO, some of those songs simply do not belong being played at that time, and I can almost guarantee that the players didn’t choose them either…

  80. G-money September 16, 2012 2:23 pm

And although this pains me to say… our band needs to get some new material…

They play the same jingles and pumps they been playing for the past 5+ years! I mean the ones before big defensive plays and after big offensive plays…

I watch a ton of football and I’ve heard other bands across the nation incorporating newer tunes into the fray and frankly I know it’s not rocket science for our extremely talented musicians to do the same at UH!

Last but not least, I don’t know if this is just me, but almost everything they play is about 10bpm too slow!! Tempo, like momentum and emotion, can make a world a difference in how the music is heard and felt. Don’t just play the music, ROCK IT!

I seriously hope someone from our music dept. reads this and takes it into consideration.

  81. mo808 September 16, 2012 2:24 pm

    Good Sunday greetings all!

    Congrats to Alawai!

Great Game and Great New Era underway way with our Warrior Football team! I love the New Traditions and I hope that more can be done to bring more fans back into Aloha Stadium!

Regarding the food choices inside the stadium: I’m thinking that I might sew some hidden pockets into my University of Hawaii Jacket to stash hub’s spicy fried chicken. 😀

  82. Annoddah Dave September 16, 2012 2:25 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Lots of positives from last night’s win and with hopes of more improvements. Is my hearing screwed up or was the new PA system worse than before? There was so much echo and you really couldn’t understand what the announcers were saying. I hope the stadium officials get out of their box seats and check this out by going to different areas of the stadium during a game.

  83. Huh? September 16, 2012 2:26 pm

Enjoyed the game last night. Very disciplined team.

I sat in the south end zone, red section. The PA system was bad. Couldn’t understand one word the announcer said.

  86. HiFlyer September 16, 2012 2:38 pm

Pomai – Don’t you mean the North end zone?

  87. koakane September 16, 2012 2:39 pm

#73 not enough community peeps must have agreed or else would have voted other wise.

for future consideration; players haka by student and band sections. eh the UH warriors can’t do the haka in the middle of other teams field so just asking why can’t at our home field?

liked the WW video, walk to the sidelines by team, upbeat offense tempo, aggressive defense. still need to refine the design but a B overall rating. next sat is the test.

#87, not enough green bottles. please continue where you left off.

  90. tommui September 16, 2012 2:50 pm

I thought the Warriors looked pretty good – in fact, very good considering the opposition.

The true test will come against Nevada, Fresno, BSU to see if we are really good.

Actually if Lamar play their future opponents the way they played last night, they will lose every game.

So I have no quarrel with Coach Woodard’s remarks.

  91. koakane September 16, 2012 3:05 pm

#88 see you stuck in a rut you need to just get off

  92. Pauoa Boy September 16, 2012 3:16 pm

One thing I like that I haven’t seen in a long while is a UH defense that can stop the run. The DLine really gets upfield allowing our linebackers to shoot gaps and nail people. George Daily-Lyles looks much improved in diagnosing plays and getting where he needs to be. Beau Yap is mean and frikkin quick for a DE. Love how he just goes on every snap…

  93. DoubleB September 16, 2012 3:21 pm

I was very impressed with the Defense and ST play. The offense was good too. I especially liked the constant motion on many plays. There were drops and near misses on O but the plays were great. The double stack WRs was a good play that could have resulted in a TD but was dropped and settled for FG. Keep it up Warriors.

  94. RedZone September 16, 2012 3:25 pm

Yep Yap had another one of those Katooosheeesss!!!!! I felt that one.

  95. AlanK September 16, 2012 3:27 pm

#79/#80 G-money I’m not sure which is worse, the UH Band playing the same old vamps, quarter after quarter, year after year or those wimpy slow songs that are more suited for a Girlscouts campfire. WHAT IS THAT PERSON THINKING??? How about coming up with some of those NFL-styled sounds that JJ used to get the crowd into the kickoff or those tunes pumped into the Stan Sheriff during basketball games because they get the blood pumping.

  96. wafan September 16, 2012 3:27 pm

    SUGESTIONS FOR A MASCOT:

How’s about something modeled after the Michigan State Spartan but with a Warrior body like Vili done and the head in a Makaki’i (Hawaiian Warrior Helmet)?

Maybe one of our resident artist like (J)James can make a rendering?

  98. tommui September 16, 2012 3:39 pm

    especially young people.

  102. G-money September 16, 2012 4:05 pm

AlanK/DoubleB: I sure hope someone out there is listening, and tries to do something rather than take my criticism personally.

I mean no disrespect to our musical directors.

Why not be a trend-setter rather than a trend-follower, right?

Right now, honestly, I have no idea what we are… but like AlanK said, “its qtr after qtr, yr after yr… stuff for a girlscouts campfire.”

I know we can do much better than that… in fact, we have to.

For those of you who would like to see changes in the UH Marching Band’s musical selections, you need to contact the Music Department directly rather than just making anonymous complaints here on the blog.

Contact Gwen Nakamura who directs both The Stan Band as well as the much larger marching band at Aloha Stadium. She is very accessible.

Find out if there are financial or practice time constraints and then share the information here on the blog.

Here is the complete listing of the Band Division:

Jeffrey Boeckman – Director of Bands

David Blon – Associate Director of Bands & Director of Marching Bands

Gwen Nakamura – Assistant Director of Bands – Intercollegiate Athletics

Reginald A. Padilla – Jazz Ensemble

    Band Office Phone – 956-7657

With respect to the recorded music played at The Stan, the University is charged a fee, but I understand that it is covered by one of the major intercollegiate athletics sponsors.

Very Boise like performance. Find roles for what you have, build a team. Play with discipline, take care of the ball, excel in all three phases.

If you take a good look at Boise defense and special teams play have been constants. I like the fact that Chow, an offense genius, recognizes these are the true building blocks of great teams.

  122. manoa#1 September 16, 2012 8:23 pm

I really see Chow as a team builder. Not just an X’s and O’s man. There’s a reason for every thing he does. From setting team rules regarding promptness, dress codes to learning the fight song.

There’s a reason early on he went to the dorms to appeal for support and to follow up by showing up at the three organized pep rallies. There’s a reason for the Warrior Walk.

He’s building a team that includes the players, the students and the community.

I find it interesting that most of the people here found yesterday’s game worth watching – in person or on tv. We did not and left at the end of the first half because a blow-out – regardless of who’s on the winning end – is both boring and embarrassing.

Hopefully, the Nevada and BYU games will be more balanced.

  139. Capitolist/WassupDoc September 17, 2012 12:14 am

For those of you who have complaints about the audio system, call the Stadium Authority office at 483-2500. You’ll be asked to provide information about the location of your seat(s).

We didn’t have problems with the announcments but with the radio broadcasts. I don’t know if the problem is the quality of the radio we take to games or if it has to do with the broadcast itself. We never have had problems at The Les or the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium or The Stan, but maybe it’s a different broadcasting environment at the Stadium.

  140. K-Bay September 17, 2012 12:21 am

  141. kev-1 September 17, 2012 12:22 am

    umm . . . Capitolist/WassupDoc,

Would you rather have had UH in a dog fight with LAMAR? I understand your desire to see a competetive game, but UH was supposed to dominate like they did. If they didn’t, there would be major cause for concern.

  142. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 17, 2012 12:33 am

It may not have been an “exciting” game to watch. I may even have caught a few flies between downs lol, but winning is ALWAYS fun.

  143. Capitolist/WassupDoc September 17, 2012 12:39 am

I don’t care who the opponent is – if the game is a blowout, I find it boring & an embarrassment. We left the sports bar at the end of the first half of the USC game for the same reason.

Last season, it was really so frustrating that UH did not play better against so many of its opponents. Those games I watched both live and recorded because I wanted to figure out what went wrong. However, the winners of the first two games in 2012 were never in doubt.

some things I learned from watching the game right over the tunnel, Orange CC row 3 seat 11. right at the tunnel.

after the game, alot of players stopped right in front of me cuz i gave up my seat to 2 kids, ages 5,10. on the small side with H stickers on their faces. cute. they were crowded by about 5 other kids, ages 8-10. and players were hand delivering gloves to all these kids. which caused more kids to come down to da spot. it was a chicken skin moment for the kids, and me.

the players had big Smiles on their faces.

i came away thinking, no matter what da lamenters say, we got a really good good team.

impressive were the efforts of chow and company in getting students out for the game. they held three pep rallies in the past two weeks on the upper campus.

last year, i recall quite often only a handful sitting in that student section. one game i counted ten people. two of whom were not students, that’s for sure. they were two old guys who had fallen asleep.

there must have been at least a thousand this past saturday including those two old guys.

Anyone know what the (free) student limit is for games at the stadium? I could’ve sworn I heard BC say it was 5k on the radio. But then after the game, someone posted that they were turning students away at the gates. Junk, when we all know there were about 20k empty seats!

  179. Norman Rauh September 17, 2012 7:41 am

Provost Dr. Tom Burish stated in the release that “While Notre Dame would have preferred to maintain its independence, the financial realities of the world of college football made the decision a necessity.” He also said that “The longstanding tradition of the schools in the Big 10 conference best fit that of the Irish program”, according to reports.

  180. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 17, 2012 7:47 am
